Inspiron 5421 will not power on

Question: Inspiron 5421 will not power on

I have a Dell Inspiron 5421 that will not power on. The indicator lights do not come on. I have discharged the "Static Flea Power" and that did not fix it. The power indicator light on the A/C power supply is on, however, when I plug it into the laptop the light goes out. I have tried powering it on with and without the battery installed. Nothing works. Any ideas?

Answer: Inspiron 5421 will not power on

First thing to try is replacing the DC power jack in the system:
www.parts-people.com/index.php
If that doesn't solve the problem, there's a fault on the mainboard - replace the mainboard.

Hi Team,
I bought my Inspiron 14R 5421 in about 2013. It has two memory slots. Currently I installed 2 * 4 GB memory chips in the slots. I wonder if I can put 2 * 8 GB memory chips?
I googled for a while, and some people say you can, but others say can't...
Do we have a official reference about this?

Thanks,
Abhishek Verma

Hi,
I purchased a Dell Laptop Inspiron 14R 5421 (Windows 8) in 2013. I used it for 4  years without any issue only until last month i had a problem of the laptop not starting (only DELL logo appearing). I ran the F12 diagnostics & it found a problem in Hard ware. I took it to a local service center (not authorised) in India & they formatted the hard drive. Post which, they installed a temporary windows 8 software & asked me NOT TO UPDATE. Now my laptop does not have the normal factory configuration & i have lost all dell diagnostics support & windows apps which were factory installed. I need to install a clean version of Windows 7 or 8. Can anyone guide me how to do this? I understand that the product key is encrypted by Dell in BIOS for all machines after 2012 or something.

If 2 sets of disks aren't working, I'd have to wonder if there's a problem with your system (either the CD/DVD drive - or with your hard drive). Please try these free tests:

recently bought a Dell Inspiron 14 5459 on June 12, 2016 and first thing I noticed is that to turn on the laptop I need to press and hold down the power button at least for 3 seconds in order for the laptop to boot up, this seems strange, I brought up this issue at the Dell Store where I bought the laptop and the sales people there told me that they noticed this in most Inspiron models.  Is this normal?

Answer:Dell Inspiron 14 5459 power button needs 3 seconds long press to power up?

Does anyone know what model or type of adaptor I can purchase for my Dell Inspiron 13-7368 laptop for the power inlet so that I connect onto my external portable power unit (The connection to the power unit is USB)?
I do not have knowledge of how those the Dell power inlet are being classified and I cannot locate the specification for it. The AC Adaptor that I have for the Dell laptop is model HA45NM140. The information maybe on the AC-Adaptor but I do not know what I am looking for in regarding the plug in type for the inlet of the laptop.

My Dell Inspiron 1545 has been sitting for a while, and when I went to plug it it and try to use it, it would not turn on. All I got is a pulsing power light like when it's in sleep.
I recently replaced the battery as well as the charger, because the original battery was shot and the charger was in horrible shape. I also replaced the power jack a while back because the pins inside were bent and the laptop got no power.
I had successfully used the laptop for a while after replacing these parts, but now it won't turn on. Whether I'm on battery, AC power, or both, it only flashes/pulses when I press the power button. If I hold the power button, it will shut off.
What's wrong here? I have checked and re-seated both memory modules, also testing both slots and nothing changed.

Answer:Inspiron 1545 Won't Power On, Pulsing Power Light Like When In Sleep Mode

Hi CARCRAZY98,
Thank you for the update.
Well, when you power on the system, if you hear the fan spinning and the HDD turning on, connect an external monitor and check if there is any display.
Reseat the cmos battery and check when possible. Since the system draws power from the adapter, at this point, I would not suspect the adapter. Also, remove the memory modules and disconnect the HDD and check if the system comes on and beeps - indicating a missing HDD / memory.
As advised in my previous post, if nothing works and the indications do not change, I would suspect the motherboard.
Let us know if you have any other queries.

My Inspiron 15R N5110 won't come on. I've tried both battery and 2 different ac adapters. I've removed the battery, unplugged it, and held the power button for 30 seconds to discharge the system, but it still won't come on.
I took the laptop apart and everything looks alright, but the DC jack was slightly brown on top so I replaced the DC jack board. It still won't work.
I made sure the connections are tight (the DC jack and other USB board) by screwing them down. The only thing that happens that shows any life is when the battery is in. The power button, power indicator light in front, and the little "gears" light blink white for just a moment, then off, about every 5 seconds.

Any ideas? If I have to replace the motherboard, what is the difference between 0G8RW1 and 0VVN1W? I'm not worried about the product key not validating - may even put Windows 8 on it.
Thanks!

Hi brockalee,
Both the Motherboards 0G8RW1 and 0VVN1W are compatible with this model and there is no difference. 07GC4R is also compatible with this model.

Inspiron 17R won't start.  Only the first light turns on and of when I power up without the battery and Plugged power.
The power light goes on for a second and the first light on the top right blinks for a second with the power light and that's it.  If I hold the power button for longer, it keeps repeating the same.
Please help.

Answer:Inspiron 17R won't start. Only the first light turns on and of when I power up without the battery and Plugged power.

Unplug the system, remove or disconnect the battery, and hold the power button for 30 sec.  Remove the base cover and memory modules;  reinstall both.
Try powering up on AC only - if it will but won't with the battery, the battery is faulty.
If it still won't power up  after the foregoing, the mainboard is bad.

So Dell made a really terrible decision.  They have a transparent strip in the power button for an LED light to indicate if the power is on.  A power indicator is a given in any laptop, no matter how cheap it is.  However, Dell in all of it's genius decided to not include an LED bulb on laptops up to the Inspiron 7000 Series, despite leaving a transparent slot for it.  Seriously, what happened to this brand?!?  Do children make these laptops now?
I want to fix this, as my laptop is no longer returnable and a power indicator is absolutely necessary.  So the only thing I can think of is replacing it with one from the 7000 Series somehow (with some help probably).
This is a Dell Inspiron 5559.  I also have an Inspiron 5547.  Not sure which exact 7000 model I should get the part for...
Are they compatible?
Is there an easier way? Like how Fn+H turns on the hard drive indicator?
Thanks.

Answer:Can I replace a Dell Inspiron 15 5000 Series power board with a Dell Inspiron 15 7000 Series power board?

The systems use different case and mainboard designs -- and may even be made by different companies.  The answer in all likelihood is no.
I don't think Apple has produced a Macbook with a power indicator -- the PC vendors are playing follow Apple.

My Inspiron 530 froze. I unplugged it for 20 seconds and now the power buton will not power on the desktop.  When I push the power buttin it turns amber for a split second but then just makes a faint ckick and goes off. If i hold it down, it repeatedly glows amber for a split second and then goes off.  Any thoughts?

Answer:Inspiron 530 will not power on

Unplug the system and hold the power button for 30 sec until the LED on the mainboard goes off.  Then try again - if nothing, replace the power supply.

Hi All,

I am having issue with my Inspiron 1564 which won't power ON.
When I connect the AC adaptor the charging LED comes up for couple of seconds and goes off. When I press the power button the power LED won't come up, nothing on screen and not even any sound of fan, but it seems the DVD drive is operational as I can open and close the try and I can see the light blinking on DVD drive panel.
Please suggest how to fix this and many thanks in advance.
Thank you

Answer:Inspiron 1564 won't power ON

Unplug the system, remove the battery and hold the power button for 30 sec.  Remove and reinstall both memory modules.  Unplug all external devices.
Verify that the LED on the AC adapter or DC cord is ON before you plug in the system end.  If it's not, the adapter is bad.
Once the adapter is verified, plug in the system end and try powering up.  If it will without the battery but not with it, the battery is bad and will need to be replaced.
If the system still won't power up on AC only with a good adapter and nothing else connected, the mainboard is bad;  given the age of the system, it's probably not worth the $300+ to replace the mainboard.  Start shopping for a new system.

Recently my Dell Inspiron 5100 stopped charging the battery when it was plugged in. After the battery power was drained completely, I couldn't use it anymore because I wouldn't get power at all. When I plug in the AC adapter into the rear DC jack, on the front I have two lights (power and battery) that flash really quickly and short at the same time as long as the power is plugged in. Sometimes when I wiggle around the plug at the back, these flashing lights can speed up or slow down. Yet, I still get no power when I press the power button. BUT, when I have an external monitor plugged in and after I plug in the AC power, the power and battery lights light up solid and then go out within a quarter to half a second. Basically, I'm getting no power what so ever to boot up the comoputer and the battery is also not charging. I've tried multiple batteries, and a second AC adapter but I still have the same problem. I know that there is a common related problem like this on these laptops. I know I can get it to work again via an external battery charger, but are there any alternatives I can try to get it to work again via the AC/DC power?

Answer:Inspiron 5100 power

If the 5100 is like the Inspiron 5200/Latitude C840 it has a separate charging circuit on a daughter board that tends to fail.

Hadn't used my laptop in about a week and when I turned it on, the keyboard lit up, Dell splash screen came on and the windows (10) icon showed up...then it just went dark.  Pushing the power button again, the keyboard lit up and immediately shut down.  I thought perhaps the battery was discharged, so plugged in the AC adaptor.....and although the adapter's blue light was glowing, the laptop's front-edge power-indicator light did NOT come on.  The same problem reoccurred when attempting to start up.  I have tried the various test methods mentioned on this site (including those done with the battery removed), to no avail.  Again, Pushing the power-button causes it to light up and the keyboard to flash momentarily....and nothing else.
Any suggestions?

I have an Inspirion XPS that wont power on. I think it may be stuck in sleep mode but nothing i try seems to wake it up. Any ideas?

Answer:Inspiron XPS wont power on

Okay, do you have any lights on at all? If it is in "sleep mode", there should be lights.

The first thing you should try is: Unplug the power cable, remove the battery pack. Push and hold the power button for approx. 10 seconds.

Plug the AC Adapter back into the laptop and try to power it on (without the battery installed).

If that works, power back off the system and unplug it. Reinstall the battery, plug it back in and try again.

Let me know about the lights.

Could not find the original. Plugged it in. Pushed in the power button. Nothing not a sound.

Could this be a bad power cord or am I going to have to crack this puppy?

Since 1 month, if  i press the power button, the laptop goes ON,  (with the lights in the right corner)  BUT the Laptop goes immediatly again to OFF without any reason!
If i press again the power button, the laptop goes ON and stays ON.!
I must always press twice so that the laptop stays on!
Can someone tell me, what's going on ?

thanks.

Answer:inspiron se7720 power ON ?

Could be something as simple as memory not fully seated, or as severe as a mainboard going bad.
Unplug the system, remove the battery and hold the power button for 30 sec.  Remove and reinstall both memory modules and the hard drive.
Try powering up on AC only - if it will consistently do that but won't with the battery installed, replace the battery with a new one.
If the problem continues after that process, run a full system diagnostic.  If a bad memory module or drive is found, replace it.
If that doesn't pinpoint the problem, replace the mainboard.

My dad has a Dell Inspiron that as of last night won't power on at all. When we push the power button, there is a quick 1 or 2 second whirr type sound as if it's trying to do something and the lights flash for a second as well. And then it just dies right then and there, without any attempt to reach any level of booting that I can see. I tried turning it on with the laptop plugged in as well, so I know it's not a battery problem. What are the other possibilities, and is there anything that can even be done about it or to diagnose it?
I'm almost positive it's past warranty as I know he's had it for at least a couple years.

Just installed Windows 10 Home with the anniversary release and upgraded BIOS to A10.  Now,  the really weird part is if I power it off completely it is still running somehow because the case is warm back around the CPU vent slots.  It isn't plugged in charging, Windows goes through its shutdown normally, screen goes completely black, all lights are off, but it stays warm and eventually drains the battery.  I've also had the difficulties resuming from sleep like others have had.
Has anyone else had the "staying on after power off" issue?
Is reverting to A07 BIOS the only solution?  Is A11 coming out soon with the fix?
Thanks!

Recently my all-in-one computer has stopped working and will not turn on. The power supply test button LED lights up and all of the fans turn on, so I know power is getting to the motherboard. Because it is an all-in-one I feel like my hands are tied when trying to diagnose the issue. I am familiar with using ATX but not this form factor, I would have tried to short the power headers to see if it was possibly just the power switch. I've switched power cords, unplugged non essential components, and switched the RAM to a different slot. I suspect it's the power switch, PSU, or motherboard. I'm clueless as to where to go from here and any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

This problem happened occasionally and got progressively worse until now the laptop will not turn on at all.
The computer does not seem to be receiving any power.  The light in the power adapter stays on and works with other computers so I assume that it is OK. Today, when I tried to start the computer I did get a battery charging light.  That was the only light.  When I removed the battery, of course, that did not light either.  After reading some of the posts on this forum I also tried removing the ram cards.  I tried inserting them one at a time in each of the slots and then reinserting them in both slots.  In all cases there were no lights at all no beeps.  I was preparing to remove the power button card and replace it, but then  noticed the battery light was on (temporally) so I am guessing that may not be the issue.  The battery is old and does not hold a charge, but the issue is the same with the battery in or with the battery removed.  Any ideas would be appreciated.

Answer:Inspiron N7110 does not power up

You've pretty much isolated the problem to a bad mainboard -- given the age of the system, it may make more sense to replace the system than to sink a few hundred dollars into a replacement board for this one.

My daughter dropped the laptop and no I cannot get it to power up.
I tried to turn on with the battery out and just the adapter plugged in to no avail. There are no lights on the laptop coming on at all, even while charging with the adapter. I have tried to remove the ram and reinsert, still nothing.
I took the hard drive out to see if it was damaged, nothing to the eye.
I am hoping it's nothing serious, the laptop is kinda old but has been working perfect till the drop. Just wondering if there is anything else I can try?

It landed on the top left corner on the bottom where the fan is and there is a little crack in the plastic, but other than that I see nothing physically broken.

Any help will be appreciated.

My all-in-one computer will not power on. The cord has the green light on but nothing on the computer itself when you push the power button. Does the green light stay on even when the charger is plugged in?
Please disconnect the cord and all the peripherals connected to the desktop, try flea power by holding down the switch on button for 5-10 seconds. Check if that helps.
If you're comfortable dismantling the PC, you may try reseating some components like memory and hard drive though I understand it is somewhat complicated than the normal desktop PC's.

Does the monitor go into "Power Saving" mode?
Did you check the cable from the rear of the PC to the monitor? Make sure it's properly connected at both ends (power the PC off before playing with the cable).
Can you test this monitor on a different PC or another monitor on this PC?
Power off and unplug. Press/hold power button on tower for ~15 sec.
See if it will boot now with only mouse, monitor and keyboard attached.

If not sounds like a power supply problem

Hello,
My laptop is experiencing problems in that it will not turn on.  I have attempted (all unsuccessful)
1)  Removing the battery, holding the power button for 60 seconds, and applying AC power (still without battery).
2)  Re-seating the battery.
3)  Holding the power button for 60 seconds (battery installed).  AC power applied for 30 minutes.

Nothing works.  Now, I'm sure there is a diagnostic message hidden here.  When I press the power button, the Caps Lock flashes once.  The battery light will then flash twice amber, then four times white.  I can find no information anywhere on this site exactly what that means (other than I'm screwed).

The laptop isn't even a year old and I'm on business travel to Malaysia.  So kind of not happy right now.

Anyone know what the flashing lights mean?  Any suggestions on how to fix it?

Thanks,
Ron

Hi
I have an all in one inspiron 2350 i5 that is 16 months ol. This morning after no previous problems it won't power up.
I've tried changing the fuse, tried unplugging and holding power button down, but to no avail.
The power supply led does not come on when plugged in but the kettle lead appears to be powered as there is the click of electrical contacts when plugging it into the supply.
Our alarm clock had reset this morning so there may have been a power outage last night? Coincidence or likely to be a cause?
Any suggestions? Replacement power supplies are 50 so I want to be sure its that before buying one. Thanks

Hi,
I just ordered an Inspiron 15 5555 and noticed that it doesn't have any LED for power! and almost no LED at all, comparing to my old laptop, which has 5 LEDs, for HDD, WiFi, Power, Charging, AC connection.
The only thing that it has is one LED, which turns on while charging, and after charging it turns off.
so for example if it's fully charged, or it's connected to AC directly , and your screen is off, you cannot tell whether your system is ON or OFF.

Note: also you can change charging LED with HDD activity, which either way to lose one of them

Answer:dell inspiron 600, no power

By 'power pack', do you mean the battery or the AC adapter?

am having problems My Dell Inspiron 510m, when i press the power button it will only show the power light and the ethernet port light for like 2-3 secs then it goes off. it wont  boot pls help?

Answer:My Inspiron 510m cant power up

Unplug system, remove battery.  Verify that the LED on the adapter is ON -- if it's not, replace the adapter with a new one.
Hold the power button for 30 sec.  Remove and reinstall the memory modules and hard drive.
Power up, AC only (no battery) - if it will, but won't with the battery installed, the battery is bad.
If it still won't power up thereafter, the mainboard is bad.

I have replaced the power switch in a Dell inspiron 545 and it still won't power up. The fan turns in the power supply but it just wont kick on. Could it be the mother board connection?

Answer:power on a Dell inspiron 545

Dells usually have diagnostic LEDs on the inside. Are there any lit on the main board. Also have you reseated the memory. What lead to the failure btw? Was replacing this power switch because it was flakey before replacement, and now its completely dead?

My desktop started making a scraping sound when powered up.  Usually goes away in a couple of seconds, by sometimes requires a slight tap to stop it.
Using a stethoscope, I finally was able to pinpoint it to the power supply fan (vs the CPU or case fan).
Before I go in for surgery, I'd like to know what I'm going to find.  Is the power supply screwed together, or riveted?  Will the fan be easy to replace?  Should I just buy a new power supply?

Hello I have owned my Inspiron 7537 for a while now and I have just recently began having problems with my AC adapter, and then it proceeds to throttle my performance. When I use my adapter on my own laptop I get the error message "plugged in, not charging" and performance isn't choked off. However when I use this adapter on another dell laptop i do not get this error message. This just started today by the way.
I have tried multiple times to fix this, from updating my bios, to taking out the battery and putting it back in, etc. I'm starting to worry that this might be a problem with my motherboard and the power regulation on that.
I would appreciate a rapid response as this is both my school and work machine, and I can't complete my work without it

I spilled water on my Dell Inspiron 6000 a while ago. Since then it will not completely power on. I have tried taking it apart and letting it dry for ~5 days then reassembling, but I continue to have the same problem. When I press the power button (or try Fn Power option) you can hear the fan kick in and all of the LED lights (Numlock, CAPLock, etc) flash on then off, then the NUMlock flashes 4 times brightly, then 6 times dimly, then you can hear the fan shut down and the system powers off. Does anyone know what this error code is? I know the hard drive is fine as I have tried it in another inspiron. I would be grateful for any suggestions or ideas. Thanks.

Answer:Dell Inspiron 600 Power On Problem

If the Dell was "On" when the water vwas spilled, then you likely have irrepairable motherboard damage. Try Dell for the codes?

I was having trouble with my charger it had a short it in it. well with it being right before christmas i was trying to make it last until afterwards because god for bid I have to be without my laptop for a week. Well I kept moving the cord to fix the short and keep it working, when finally it quit charging all together so I bought a new charger and nothing no battery light not so much as a noise you hit the power button and it is Dead! So I took it apart and re soldered the charger plug thinking I had busted a solder on the plug because i kept miving the cord around to keep it charging. Used ohms meter and there is power to the plug and all the solders but still nothing. Any Idea what the problem could be i am desperate here too much of a computer geek to have my laptop down.

I am looking for some guidance on this issue on how to proceed. Here is my issue. I have a Dell Inspiron 20- 3048 All-in-one.

Upon pressing the power button, the hard drive lights up white for about 2 seconds and then the power button light turns orange and then flashes 3 times, then nothing for a few more seconds, then flashes twice, then nothing, then back to the 3 times, so on and so forth. The fan continues to run and there are no beeps. Here is what I have tried so far:

I went online and it appears it could be a power related issue. I have replaced the motherboard and I have replaced the power adapter that goes to the motherboard. I have tried 2 different power supplies but still have the same issue. I have unplugged the SATA hard drive and DVD drive from the board but still have the same flashing orange power light. I have taken the memory out and switched slots on it but still the same result. I am not sure what else the issue may be. I do not want to spend a ton more money on this unit but am not sure what to try next. Any ideas/direction are appreciated.

Hi, I have been thinking of upgrading my inspiron 580s desktop for a while now. I checked the unit and it currently has a integrated HD (R) 4000 Graphics unit and a 250W power supply. I know I need to upgrade the power supply for a new card but what semi powerful cards are able to operate with the unit and that can fit in the unit since the max height is 3 inches (checked the case and the outlets).
So to sum it up is there any power supplies that are able to fit inside the unit and that are compatable with the unit.
Also what GPU's can work with the unit due to the space restrictions and the age restrictions of the unit since it was produced in late 2009-2010

Answer:Inspiron 580s Power supply and GPU

There are no upgrades.  The case is too small to accommodate a better power supply.

I have a 2-year-old Inspiron 17 7000 Series laptop, gently used. A couple weeks ago my laptop, while plugged in and charging, shut off suddenly... no lights... no sound... nothing. I unplug the cord from the laptop and then from the outlet. I plug the cord back into the wall, check to see that the green light comes on the converter, and then plug the cord into the charge port. Nothing. The green light goes out almost immediately and the laptop will not power on. I find another dell charge cord with the same voltage as mine and exact same thing happens... green light goes out as soon as I plug it into the laptop.
I am out of warranty and at a loss. I'm frustrated and disappointed. I've only ever owned Dell computers and this purchase was a coveted upgrade. I'm hoping there's a simple and inexpensive solution but fear the worst. If this issue cannot be resolved without paying for an expensive repair, this will be my last Dell.
Please help... anyone?
Thank you!

Answer:Inspiron 17 7000 Series Won't Power On

Hello,
Disconnect the adapter, remove the battery and hold the power button for 30 sec.
Try powering the laptop with adapter only. Try powering the system up with both memory and hard drive removed. If you see a difference, start putting back one component at a time till you isolate the faulty component. If the issue remains even with the components removed and you have tried the first step, you need a replacement motherboard.
If the system powers on with adapter and fails with battery connected, you will need a replacement battery.

Hello all,

First time posting here. This looks like a strong community and I hope somebody can help me.

I've got an Inspiron 6000 that is several years old and has never given me any major trouble until last night. It's a Pentium M 1.6 with 1.25 Gigs ram on two modules - 256 MB that came with it and a 1 Gig module that I added a couple of years ago. It runs Ubuntu Linux.

I was watching a movie and using firefox when it simply shut down. And I don't mean went dead - it actually shut down quickly but gracefully. X clearly died first and then the rest of the OS went down, much faster than normal but not just a total power failure. When I turned it over it was very hot on the bottom, so I figure it overheated. It's never done it before but I haven't blown the dust out of it in a while.

Now it won't turn on, at all. The test button on the battery shows a full charge and the AC adapter light functions normally, but pressing the power button does nothing. It's had about 8 hours to cool now so I know it's not still hot. Any ideas? What should I check and how do I check it?

Thanks for your help,
-Mark

I'm hoping I put this in the right thread.
Here is my issue:
I have a Dell N5030 laptop. I recently did some maintenance on it by replacing the power jack thinking that it was not recognizing the adapter for some reason. However I am still not getting any power from the adapter.

When the battery is in the Laptop the machine will start to power on, but before anything can show up on the screen it powers back down. I'm unsure of how to proceed.

Does anyone have any advice on how to troubleshoot this issue?

Answer:Dell Inspiron N5030 Won't power on

Sounds like the battery is discharged and can't hold power up because of that.

If you unplug the AC cord and battery, press the power button for 30 seconds to reset, then plug back in the AC cord, what happens?

Now repeat that but hold the power button while plugging back in the AC cord. Any change?

You'll need to get power into the PC to see if it will hold power up.

My AC adapter and battery are both good. also replaced the cmos battery. However when i plug in the AC adapter to my N5110 the green light on the charger goes out and still nothing. The mainboard needs to be replaced.  They run between $100-150 -- not $300 (unless you need to have a shop replace the board, where you can add another $100 to the parts cost for labor).

I have a Dell Inspiron E1405. My daughter was using it and got called away. When she returned, she assumed it had gone in to standby or hibernation mode but it appeared to have shut off "or something". Now, when you push the power button, the device status lights all come on, as do the numeric keypad, uppercase letter function, and scroll lock function lights. After about 5 seconds, the uppercase function light and scroll lock function light start blinking. After about 20 second of that, the computer shuts off. Nothing else happens, no other lights come on, the display does not light up.....nothing. I have tried while battery powered and while plugged in to a power outlet with no success. ANY idea what is happening??

When you double click on he AC power symbol in the task bar it doesn't recognize that a battery is in place. Dell doesn't seem to have a clue or atleast that's how they are acting.

I hope I am posting in the right section of the forum.

I have a Dell Inspiron e1505 notebook (laptop). it now won't power on!

I checked if my power adapter has a problem, but my power adapter works fine when connected to my friend's laptop.

When I switch on the power, the LED lamp on adapter is glowing green. As soon as I insert the adapter pin into my laptop, the LED turns off! And no LED on laptop would ever blink.

Can somebody please guide me? Thank you!

Answer:Dell Inspiron e1505 won't power on

Lots of folks are having trouble with the power socket for the adapter cable breaking loose from the board. Does your jack wiggle at all or otherwise feel loose?

Also, that Dell model has a lot of trouble with the inverter to the screen burning out. Everything will light up except the screen. A new inverter costs $5 to $9, but takes some work to install.

I've just done a clean install of W10 on my Dell Inspiron 7537 laptop. I turned off the laptop last night when the battery was about half discharged.

I tried turning on the laptop today after it had been off 18 hours and it was completely dead - there was no response to the power on button and no charging light despite the charger outputting the correct voltage.

I read online about removing the battery so I did this. I removed the battery, pressed the power button for 60s then plugged in the power lead and hey presto the laptop started! I then put the battery back in and started W10 fine. The battery showed 56% charge so the battery wasn't flat.

I'm mystified why this happened - does anyone have an explanation? I can only think there was a poor battery connection which prevented the laptop starting and removing and replacing the battery cured this.

Answer:Dell Inspiron 7537 Won't Power On?

Does anyone know why my laptop would refuse to power on in post 1? Could it be caused by a software problem connected with the sleep state or simply a case of a poor battery connection?

Hello. I have an Inspiron 5000e that shut down one day on its own and won't restart. I press the power button and the light blinks but that's all. I've read a previous closed thread on another model suffering the same problem. The suggested answer to that problem laid within the touchpad assembly. It seems like it's in hibernation but won't come back to life. A respondent wrote where there was a magnet that exherted its force near a long thin sensor labelled V1 (or U1) on the circuit board (i don't which circuit board he refers to). He proceeded to disconnect this sensor with a sharp knife and the machine came back and has been running well. The only downside he states is no automatic hibernation (which i personally don't care about, i only had hibernation enabled because it was my boy's laptop and he would leave it running). I removed everything and disconnected the touchpad from the motherboard but i can't find this sensor he refers to. I would think they should be similar albeit different models but if anyone could help identify it, that would really help. Then i would know if it's shot or not. Another writes that he performed as above and he thinks he sees the bar that detects the magnet (located in the lid) looks to be labelled U1 or V1. He also got his machine working by removing. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all.

I bought this 17" Dell Inspiron 1720 just over a year ago.
A week ago I was using it and everything was running just fine. I turned around to do something, for less than five minutes and when I returned the computer was turned off.

I pressed the power button, no power, no lights to indicate any power is going to the unit.
I checked my power supply, tried different power outlets to no avail. When I would plug the power supply in the green light would come on indicating the unit was working, but as soon as I plugged it into the back of the laptop, (when I put my ear to the power supply) there would be a little zap and the green light would go out.

Thinking it was the power supply, I had some friends bring over their Dell power supplies. The P-10, two prong power supply.
It did the same with theirs.

The next thing I checked was to see whether or not the battery had any power left.
It did. When I pressed the button on the back it had 5 lights indicating it was full.

So, before I go and have to more than likely shell out lots of money to someone to fix it, I would like to know if any one else has come across this same thing and what it may be.

Thanks.

Answer:No power on Dell Inspiron 1720

Remove the battery.
Plug in the power supply. Ensure the system is powered off.
Remove all external peripherals.
Press and hold the <Fn> key on the keyboard.
Continue to hold the <Fn> key while pressing the power button.
Release both buttons.

See if that works. If not, go here and run this diagnostic.

I got a laptop in my shop that has fallen victim to yet another spillage incident, this time it happens to be red wine (insert facepalm smiley here). The owner claimed to have spilled the beverage into the keyboard area. The computer supposedly worked after sitting for a day or so, which isn't really enough time imho, and now it won't power up at all--battery or aux power.

I took the laptop apart, right down to the motherboard and tested a few components. The RAM, HDD, optical drive and battery are all fine, but there was some sticky wine residue on some of the internals. I couldn't see and physical damage to the circuits but my guess is that it must have shorted out somewhere. I checked all of the connections for the power button and screen but i couldn't find any problems. None of the LEDs seem to work at all even when the computer is plugged in. The fan does not spin, and I hear no beeps or the usual boot sounds. It appears as if the machine is dead, but I was looking for some quick advice before I return it as such. Any ideas?

Answer:No power on Dell Inspiron 1520

Wash it upside down with distilled water only... and use a lot of it, then dry it upside down for seven days without the use of fans as they generate static electricity which is the real evil.

The drying wine sugar can act as a conductor.

Hi all,

I've read so many things on this, i dont even know where to look
anymore. It's the same problem that many of us had experienced. I have a inspiron 8200 for reasons that i still dont know, it recognizes my 90 watt ac adaptor as a 70 watt adaptor. It runs on batter just fine. However, with the computer thinks that it only gets 70 watt power supply, the battery wont charge. i've heard that it can be fixed by replacing the motherboard, but $600 is just not in my budget right now. I've also read something about replacing the power source.

Here's something else i've found a while ago

"If the laptop works on battery, my guess is that the inline ceramic DC fuse is open. This is a small oblong block be 1/4 inch long, 1/8 inch high and wide, surface mounted very near the AC adapter jack. This can be bypassed with a suitable Picofuse, be 8 amps, soldered across the conductive ends of the existing fuse case. I would only look into this if the warranty is expired. It is an easy fix, be $2 for the replacement fuse, be $10 for silver epoxy if it risky to solder in the area. I've done this on three laptops which are still functioning - only one with the epoxy. I wish I knew the mechanism for the DC overload, one of the laptops had a water spill, the other two are mysteries to me."

1. I would attempt this if there was some sort of more "cookbook" instruction from anyone who has ever attemped the repair.
2. If someone can point... Read more

Shut down my computer last night. It was nearing low battery power, but wasn't dead 5% or so.

Woke up this morning. Plugged it into the charger, and it won't turn on. The white LED at the front of the computer is on fine though.

Tried with just the battery, no light no power.

With just the cord, also no light, no power.

Light only comes on when both are in, but still no power or any signs of life other than that little light.

Is the issue with the battery or the cord and how do I find out which?

Answer:Inspiron 15 5000 series won't power up

Hi MCWERP,
What is the exact system model?
Does the system overheat? Is there any damage / liquid spillage on the system?
When you press the power button, does the power led come on and stay on or does it go off after a few seconds?
When you plug in the adapter to the system, does the adapter stay firm or does it fall off easily? Is the adapter frayed?
Please check if there is any damage on the machine. Check if all the ports on the machine are fine or misaligned. Sometimes if the pins in the USB ports are touching each other, they are known to cause many issues on the machine.
Disconnect the adapter and battery and press and hold the power button for 30 seconds to release any static power. Then test the system with the adapter only / battery only.
Press and hold the fn key + power button to turn on the system and it should initiate the diagnostics - check for any possible beep codes.
Run the LCD bist - Turn off the system and press and hold the "D" key + power button to turn on the system and it should run the LCD built in self test - see this link for more info - http://dell.to/1SkXNrG
Enter the service tag and download the service manual and open the chassis - remove the HDD / memory modules and check if the system powers on and detects the absence of memory indicated by beeps.
If nothing works, I would suspect a motherboard fault and it needs to be replaced.

Briefly, have Inspiron 1545 with a known good battery (less than one year old). It is recognized by the computer, displays as healthy, and charges seemingly properly. The laptop does not utilize the battery though. Unplugging it immediately shuts it down, despite the healthy battery having 80%+ charge.
More detail: Have an old Inspiron 1545 in very good condition. Haven't used it in a little while, it was just put away with a partially charged battery, I was made to believe that was a good way to leave it.
Powered it on just today and just for kicks, I initially tried it without plugging it in to see if it still had a charge, which was silly because it had been weeks. Oddly, only the optical drive LED flickered. I was surprised it had power at all, so I plugged it in and came on just fine. I then noticed from the Battery Bar third party utility that it was showing 80% charge, which I thought was strange because the laptop had been sitting around and also because it had not come on.
Later I unplugged it, intending to move to another location in my house, and it instantly powered off. I thought this was odd, since it should have switched to battery, but I've tested several times now and while the battery is recognized, charging, and healthy according to Battery Bar, the computer does not use it.
It IS a third party battery.
Is this at all possible that this is due to fresh-installing Windows 10? I do believe (99% certain) that the battery functioned fine when this... Read more

Hi all, I have a Inspiron 3647 and it recently shut off on my wife and she went to print a pay stub. I watched the Dell power supply trouble shooting video and followed the process disconnecting everything from power supply to mother board and can't find the fault. The only time the fan spins is when I hold down the black diagnosis button. I have unplugged everything that has a harness and even moved removed the RAM and replugged everything back in and still no solutions. What am I doing wrong? If you're going to ask me about a warranty, than no, the warranty was up last year. If someone from Dell could assist that would be great as I've been a long time Dell customer and have purchased many PC's, Laptops, software over over the past 9 years.

Answer:Inspiron 3647 not working won't power on.

This is mainly a user-to-user forum and very few responses posted here are from Dell employees...
If you use a surge protector or power strip, did you remove them and connect PC directly to the wall outlet?
What color is the power button and is it steady or blinking?
Did you try just disconnecting the power cord from rear of PC and pressing/holding the power button for ~30 sec?
Sounds -to me- like maybe the power supply will have to be replaced...

I left my Dell Inspiron 1420 on overnight and when I checked it the next morning it was completely dead. It was operating on AC power, without the battery in.
The AC adapter light was out when it was attached to the laptop. When I disconnected the adapter from the laptop and switched on the mains, the light came on, and it like it could function normally. However, once I connect it to the laptop, the adapter light goes out.
The laptop cannot power on on battery alone, or with battery and AC power connected either. The battery does not charge either.
The laptop gives no response (no lights no sound) when the power button is pushed. Even without any peripherals attached, the laptop cannot power on at all.
I had not installed any new hardware devices or software, except for the fact that I do leave my laptop on overnight quite often. I do not think it could be due to overheating as the laptop temperature has never gone above 'uncomfortable to touch' levels of heat, and I always use a notebook cooler.
What could have caused this problem?

Answer:Dell Inspiron 1420 cannot power on at all

Unless it's the power adaptor that's actually faulty?

Try removing the power adaptor and battery
Hold the power ON button on for 30 secs (dispersing all internal voltage)
Plug the power adaptor back in, and then try turning it on.

Did it work?

Hello,
I have been using Dell Inspiron 535S desktop since last 6 years and it has barely given me any issue until this morning.
Few days back the power on button at the front was giving problems while trying to switch the CPU on. I had to press almost 20-30 times to get it powered on.
This morning it just gave out and didnt power on even if I tried 100 times.
As per some suggestion from Dell forum I tried to jump the power from that 24 pin plug by using a paper pin and I could see the fan running in the SMPS unit and the hard disk moving which means the power unit is working fine. The green light is also working on the back panel everytime I plug in the power.
I also tried removing/inserting RAM into the motherboard, however that didn't work either.
Now I'm out of ideas.
Please help me troubleshoot this issue.

Thanks,
Ravi Srivastava

Hi, here is my problem :

I have a Dell Inspiron 2200 with power issues. The laptop boots fine to bios but it seems like the motherboard doesn't send any power to the Hdd or Cd-rom so the bios send and error of no HDD present.

I though it would be the CMOS battery but the computer doesn't loose the date/time in the bios. I've also tried booting off a usb and it works. I've tried the HDD in my desktop and it works so the drive itself is not an issue.

Does this mean that my motherboard is gone? I am also out of warranty on it.

Thx

Answer:Dell Inspiron 2200 No power to ide

You might have a bad connection between your motherboard and your drives.

Assuming that you have a Inspiron 530 Mini Tower and not the 530s slimline version.
A Dell OEM Inspiron 530 MT 350w power supply, can be purchased from Here:

I am looking for a 400 Watt or more power supply under $60 Which will be compatible with my Dell Inspiron 531. The reason I am needing this is because I recently purchased a Nvidia 9600 GSO video card and my computer [I guess to save them some money] does not have the connector required to connect the video cards power adaptor to the power supply. I am looking for a power supply that will let me connect this video card to it AND have connectors for my hard drive dvd driver etc which are sata I believe.

Answer:Power Supply For Dell Inspiron 531

20 $ after mail in rebate: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341012
Or if you want a power supply that you can use afterwards, (next time build your computer rather than buying a Dell, we will advice ) get the 600 W version: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341010
OCZ power supplies are good quality, and cheap.
But there is a slight possibility that you will need a special-made power supply for your Dell. Though, I googled a bit, and saw a power supply that was said to be "made" for your Dell, it was actually physically the size of a normal ATX power supply, and had all the same connections (at least if it doesn't have a custom 24-pin mobo connector) as a normal ATX PSU.

I work as a repair tech out of my home, I recieved a Dell Inspiron E1505 with the complaint that it will not run or charge off the power supply. He also handed me a shell (lower case and motherboard) of a E1505 Computer B and said he was useing it to charge his battery and then puts it into the working e1505 computer A until it dies then does the same over and over. He uses the same power supply for both computers.
I took Computer A apart thinking it was the power port, I tested the power port with my meter and all checks out, No broken contacts or soldering. I double checked my readings with the non working shell Computer B and had the same readings on all power port tabs. Computer B has power to the battery contacts as well. Computer A has none. I even used a different power supply and got the same thing. SO what would make computer A that will run off a battery not work or charge the battery when pluged in when all power port contacts work? I have not run into a problem like this and its really bothering me. I also cleaned out the power port to make sure nothing was in it.
Any help would be great.
Thank you.

I have a Dell Inspiron 5160. This morning it suddenly can't recognize the power adaptor. It boots from the battery, but acts as if the ac adaptor isn't there. I can get a new ac adaptor, but i was wondnering if there should be something deeper that I need to look into.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Inspiron 5160 power up issue

It is very wise to try another AC adapter before the internal main battery dies

I am having an issue with the power cord and battery on my dell inspiron 5100. My puppy chewed through my original cord. I purchased a new universal cord which appeared to be working. Yesterday I noticed the machine running on battery even though the power cord was plugged in. Then the machine shut down and I have not been able to get it to turn on.
I have checked the fan, removed the battery and hd.

When I plug in the power cord (no battery) the power indicator light and the battery indicator both have green lights when I plug in the battery all the indicator lights go out. Is it possible that mobo is toast?

No, you likely need the correct power adapter... easily available on eBay

I just got in a cousin's computer today to look at. It's a Dell Inspiron 1100 that wasn't powering up.

Here's what I've observed:

1) The AC to DC converter light comes on, meaning that I'm getting power as far as the transformer.

2) Removing the battery doesn't help

3) Absolutely no LEDs on the laptop come on, and no fans, etc. start.

Here's what I've tried:

1) We had a similar problem at work the other day, a lady brought in her Dell Inspiron that wasn't getting power from the DC port...the battery was powered however, and we had a few mintues of battery left to confirm that the laptop was working. We opened up the case to find that a copper connector that connects the port to the mobo was detached, we soldered it back on and it worked fine.
Thinking this could be similar, I opened up the case (and with almost 30 screws, that took a while) and saw that everything looked fine.

2) I've tried checking to make sure all the buttons work, and they do. There was nothing blocking the buttons when I opened up the case to look.

Does anyone know what's wrong and how to fix it? Or should I just tell him to buy a new laptop?

Thanks.

Answer:Dell Inspiron 1100 gets no power

So you have reated all the things, like Ram; keyboard so forth (it sounds as though you know generally about all this)

You could also try reseating the CPU, but once this is done, you will then need to apply new thermal paste to fix the HeatSink again.

If you're really deetermined, you could remove the motherboard from the case fully, and benchtest it.

The power button seems too hard to press?

Answer:Inspiron 15-5559, Power button

This is a two year old laptop. When was it purchased by you? From whom? Does the bezel around the power button appear to be fully snapped down into place? Are all side of the button free of the bezel?

Hey guys.

My Inspiron E1705 is approaching its 2nd birthday and has suddenly died on me. Since January, when i had to send it in to dell to get the LCD replaced (bad wiring) it has intermittently been giving me the blue screen of death. Mostly when moved. recently it has been doing it more often.

Yesterday, following a BSoD, i rebooted it and it worked fine for a while, but began freezing. Each time i rebooted it would work for shorter and shorter periods before freezing again. Eventually it was freezing at startup, and then not even turning on at all.

After about 30 min it finally decided to power on. It then warned me that it had automatically shut off to prevent overheating, however it was barely warm and the CPU crit temp is about 250 F. Ive heard stories about E1705s fuctioning at temperatures so hot that the keyboard could burn your hands. So that cant be the real problem. Shortly after returning to life it froze and died on me again.

At this point its been a day and when i press the power button the light will go on for a few seconds and shut off. Every once in a while the hard drive will begin to start for about 2 seconds and then power off. Ive checked the battery, and removed and reseated the hard drive. neither of those have made any difference. Im a student so i really dont want to dish out the money to Dell to fix it. any ideas? Thanks, that computer is my life,
