Touchpad gestures/scrolling/pointer not working after windows 8.1 update on Dell Inspiron 11 3137

Question: Touchpad gestures/scrolling/pointer not working after windows 8.1 update on Dell Inspiron 11 3137

Just got a brand new laptop, Dell Inspiron 11 3137, and updated to windows 8.1. The touchpad does not work properly now; gestures/scrolling/pointer not working. I've spent over 16 hours getting windows 8.1 installed and then troubleshooting this issue. I've contacted Dell; updated the driver from Dell, even tried installing the latest driver from Synaptic. I even tried setting the Synaptic app to run under the windows 8 version.
Touchpads have been around a long time. It's the last thing I expect not to work properly.
At this point I am ready to send the laptop back and call it quits on windows.
Can anybody help with this?

Answer: Touchpad gestures/scrolling/pointer not working after windows 8.1 update on Dell Inspiron 11 3137

SO, You're having problems with 8.1 and the Synaptics Dell Touchpad!? I wish I could say I've never seen this before. I won't open up with "Have you tried this?" Instead, I'm confident this will "fix what ails ya" There have been a wealth of problems with touchpads (Alps included) and not just on Dell systems, during the transition from windows 8 to 8.1 (I still can't figure out why they didn't just call it SP1) IN ANY EVENT> give this a go and please get back to me after you've done it so I can share with others who are experiencing the same problem. I'll explain WHY these steps at the end...Go ahead peek ...I won't tell anyone!
Locate the current driver for your touchpad from Dell Support by entering your service tag number here:
SAVE the download to somewhere convenient like your desktop (you can put it somewhere else later)
1) From the control panel under Programs / Uninstall a Program locate the Synaptics Pointing Device Driver and completely uninstall the software. but DO NOT RESTART if prompted. Instead select the restart later option.
2) From the control panel under Hardware and Sound locate the Device Manager in the Devices and Printers category and click on it (device manager may require admin permission.)
3) Locate Mice and other Pointing Devices and click to expand. You may see the Synaptics PS/2 port touch pad still there. If so right click and select Uninstall. okay the warnings. when prompted to restart use the TAB key on your keyboard to highlight the restart option and then press the Enter Key on keyboard.
**After you have restarted, the touchpad will operate with limited functionality, without gestures and preference settings. THATS PERFECT for now.
4) Repeat steps 1,2 &3 BUT THIS TIME, Select the mouse that's listed there...probably HID compliant mouse. Restart computer as in step 3
5) Windows will automatically "discover" new hardware and install it for HID Compliant Mouse on PS/2 port so the touchpad is back to it's limited state. THATS what we want!
6) Double click on your downloaded Synaptics Dell Touchpad driver and install.
IMPORTANT NOTE: if your driver does not launch immediately after expanding locate the "setup.exe" This will be located in C:\Dell\Drivers\(5 digit alpha numeric identifier of your software)\ setup.exe. Restart normally if prompted. That's it!
Whenever a SP or major upgrade to Windows is conducted the original operating system is fundamentally changed. One would hope driver support for the upgrade or SP would be automatic and in most cases it IS either automatic or available as an update. You should always use your My Dell program utility as your FIRST resource for updates to Dell products. Microsoft Windows Update only offers security and system-critical driver updates and usually only when the original manufacturer has stopped supporting a product.
The device driver (Dell device driver in this case) Installs to it's operating system and system configuration...which is why one driver works on multiple configurations. This procedure allows the driver install package a "fresh look" at the OS and system so in most cases resolves driver problems when the drivers aren't rendered completely obsolete by an update. If this solution resolves your touchpad issue please drop a quick note. I'd really appreciate it. Thanks and Good Luck!

Hello, I have a brand new Dell Inspiron 5558 with Windows 8.1 64b installed. I can't use touchpad gestures, no scroll, no pinch to zoom, etc. I have installed the latest drivers from here but after install (which says it is succesfull) nothing is showing up in my taskbar or control panel or program files.

Answer:Dell Touchpad gestures not working on Dell Inspiron 5558

I found the fix here. Install Synaptics 19.15.2 Windows 10 64 Bit  even tough you have Windows 8.1.
Install like this:
1) Extract the files to another folder
2) Open the folder with extracted files copy the path of the x64 drivers
3) Go to Control Panel>Device Manager>Mice and other pointing devices
4) Right click mice and other pointing devices, select Update Driver>From Hard-Disk
5) Add the x64 drivers path
6) Select Dell Touchpad
7)  Install drivers
8) Restart

I have a Lenovo Z510 laptop. I had the Alps touchpad driver installed from the Lenovo's driver page (Drivers and software - IdeaPad Z510 Notebook), however, I noticed multiple times that the driver would stop working and the touchpad would not be useable. I took me a while to notice because I always use a USB mouse instead of the touchpad mouse. To fix the install, instead of reinstalling the driver from leonvo's website, I first Uninstalled the driver from the Device Manager, and I also selected the option "Delete the driver software for this device"...After restart, Windows didn't reinstall the generic driver, nor was I seeing any error in the Device Manger. My touchpad driver is not showing up at all... I reinstalled the driver from Lenovo's page. It says "installed successfully" however after reboot, the driver is still not present... The touchpad driver is not showing in the device manager at all!! What do I do?

Answer:IdeaPad P580 - Touchpad is not responding - gestures and scrolling are not working

I would just contact Lenovo support. Seems like it could be a bad physical connection or faulty touchpad -Matthew

I restarted my computer to do a Windows update, and suddenly two-finger scrolling and pinch to zoom aren't working. I've already been to Windows mobility center and into the touchpad settings, where it says both are turned on.
Any ideas how to fix it?

Answer:Inspiron 15R 5520 touchpad two-finger gestures not working

Since this was asked almost 3 years ago and I see no answer I have to assume this is not a function I can expect on the Inspiron 5520.  I suppose it is too old to expect a driver change to enable that functionality.

I got my Dell Inspiron 15 5000 series a week ago, and despite things working perfectly in the beggining, my touchpad stopped scrolling (2-finger gesture).
The only think it does is move the cursor.
According to the sticker on my laptop I have a precision touchpad, but I see no "You have a precision touchpad" statement in the settings as I believe I should.
Can anyone help? Is there a specific driver that maybe got corrupted? (I ran the update driver test and it says that my driver is up to date) Or is there a separate driver for the gestures?
Thanks for the help

inspiron 5447 Win10 - Touchpad, Multi Finger Gestures Not Working.
I have this problem over a year,
i heard about many costumers facing the same issue.
I tried unsuccessfully some fixing suggestions from the technical support over the year.
I still have the same touchpad problem and I very disappoint and its very hard for me using a new pc without multi touch over a year without any solution.
I have a feeling that DELL ignore the problem and ignore the costumers.
I am sorry that i wait for solution over the year, it was better if i was return it in time and get my money back.
for me it was a very bad costumers experience and ill avoid of buying DELL products in the near future again.

Answer:Gestures not working in dell inspiron 1545

A touchpad is not the same thing as a touch screen. Your touch pad may not support gestures, it may just emulate a mouse.

I have a Dell Inspiron 11 3137 that has served me well up to this point.  Upgrade to Windows 10 went well, no prior issues.
Recently and possibly after some driver updates I noticed the laptop was having problems waking from sleep mode.  I usually leave it plugged in overnight with sleep mode.  In the morning it would not wake opening the lid and/or pressing the power button.  The only option was holding the power button for about 10 seconds and then pressing it again and it would normally restart.
That was when I noticed something I have never seen before on any laptop I have ever had.  I decided not to use sleep mode and turned the computer off completely.  To my surprise, the computer stayed warm on the bottom, but not by the battery.  It was up higher by the processor.  I removed the AC adapter power and waited for it to cool, but it did not.  An hour later, the computer was still hot on the bottom, near the processor.  I removed the bottom cover and sure enough, the copper heat sink from the fan to the processor was very hot with the computer turned off for over an hour and the AC adapter removed.  I disconnected the battery, and of course the copper heat sink clipped to the top of the processor then cooled almost immediately.
I did some research and doing a battery pull is one of the suggested reset guides for a number of problems with this laptop, so I gave it another try.  Things worked okay for about ... Read more

I the driver setting screen the touchpad and all its options are greyed out, too (see screenshot).

Answer:Thinkpad Yoga 13 Touchpad is disabled - Scrolling & Gestures work

Has anyone ever made headway on this issue? I'm having the same problem. Scrolling and gestures are recognized, but moving the cursor and tap-to-click are nonfunctional. It's essentially stuck permanently in trackpoint-only mode, and the option to switch back has literally dissapeared. It started intermittently (would sometimes "fix itself" on restarting) but now the problem appears permanent and updating drivers does not solve the issue.

I just recently bought a Lenovo B570e. I've installed Windows 8 Pro 64bit on it. I want to get the windows 8 gestures on my touchpad. I've tried many things... installed two or three versions of Synaptics. The one on my laptop's drivers CD, from the synaptics website, from the lenovo's drivers page, and a couple others. With synaptics I can't get any gestures, even the scroll feature isn't working. I tried ELan on my drivers CD... and that enabled pinch to zoom and scrolling but how can I get all the Windows 8 gestures on my touch pad. Please tell me a step by step procedure, cause I'm not that good on these things yet.

Answer:Windows 8 gestures on touchpad not working

If the latest Lenovo drivers from the laptop's website don't do it, it is probable that your system does not support it. Remember that the gestures for Windows 8 were designed for touch screens, not touch-pads. I have a Samsung Series 7; it also doesn't support all of the gestures.

However, to overcome this, I purchased a Logitech Touchpad (the T650, I think). It does support the gestures. It is wireless and rechargeable.

Laptop: Toshiba Satellite C655D-S5518
OS: Windows 8 Pro (clean install)

I recently purchased and updated to Windows 8 Pro. The touchpad works just fine but noticed gestures are not working. I did a Windows update, gestures still do not work. Weird how it's providing an older driver but I still tried it.

I then went to Synaptics website and downloaded and installed the lastest Windows 8 driver. I'm still not getting any gestures.

Under mouse settings in the control panel, my only options to configure buttons are left/right. No gesture settings. Other screenshots of this window I have seen have all kinds of gesture options.

Anyone have any suggestions to get gestures working for my laptop? Simple scrolling gesture would be nice!

If any other info is needed that I didn't already explain, please ask. Thanks!

Enter the control panel and look for the touchpad control panel. In my HP Omen 15 product loan it was a Synaptics application. I found that upgrading to Windows 10 appeared to have removed the tick mark to the right of the scrolling feature. It was working before I upgraded. I put the tick back in and scrolling started working again.

Satellite ls7008. I have a laggy mouse when moving it with the touch-pad only. Every 4-6 seconds it stops then goes again. This is also happening when using the arrow keys on the keyboard when scrolling in a long web page. Now I am noticing input lag while typing. It does not do this when using a USB mouse(the mouse lag only). I have tried to restore, uninstall drivers, install new drivers(synoptics and Toshiba ones) and it still does it. I tried with and without a battery. I Turned off virus protection. Nothing has changed the input lag yet. Wondering if I need to reinstall windows 7 64bit as this really annoys me.

Hi . Have, or do you do any maintainence to Windows? With a problem like this, I would do some work on the registry, I use the Freeware program called 'Winmend registry defrag 1.3.4'. You can download it from It is a 'light' program, and unlikely to do harm (as some can). Do a backup of your current registry as a safety precaution, before the scan. Also try 'CCleaner', as a general scan of your system to clear up any further 'problems'. I use these programs often, along with 'Auslogics Disc defrag 3.1.'

Hi everyone,
So on August 2nd I updated my Dell XPS 13 (9333) to Windows 10 Pro, and despite a few glitches from the OS, everything worked as expected, especifically the 3-finger swipe up to show Task View and down to show the Desktop, as well as (finally) being able to scroll windows out of focus just by hovering over by enabling the option in Settings.
However, yesterday I realized that is no longer the case. The 3-finger swipe brings up Cortana/Search and down opens up the Settings app. Moreover, scrolling w/o focus stopped working too!
I'm running the latest Dell Touchpad driver (v. and I have Multi-Finger gestures enabled in the options. Checking the Windows Update history, besides the Windows Defender updates, I see the following: KB3074678, KB3074686, and a Failed Synaptics Update for Dell Touchpad (around the day it stopped working as it should).
Anyone experiencing a similar problem? Suggestions?
Thanks in advance,
-- Pol

OK so I have tried deleting the touchpad in device manager and removing the driver, and reinstalling the device from scratch. When this didn't work I thought there must be a problem with the touchpad itself and so bought a new one and installed it. Problem is it still doesn't work.
If I go into device manager and look for it I have to show hidden devices and then it comes up with the yellow triangle next to it.
I show properties on it and it says its the Dell Touchpad, Manufacturer is Alps Electronics, and its plugged into the PS/2 mouse port.
In the Device Status box it says:
This device is not present, is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed. (Code 24)
The Driver date is 02/05/2010 and the version is 7.1107.115.102
I have also noticed that on the details tab under power data the current power state is D3, which I believe is off.
Something else I have noticed which may or may not be related is that the laptop doesn't enter sleep mode when the lid is closed, altho it is set to and will enter sleep if I select it in the shutdown options.
I am at a complete loss as to why the touchpad isn't working so any help would be appreciated.
If you need any more info please let me know.

It worked fine on Windows 7, but simply stopped working when i formatted my hard drive and installed Windows 8.1 32-bit edition.
The touchpad didn't even work during Windows 8.1 installation (I used bootable USB to install Windows 8.1) After the install, I downloaded and installed every single driver that there is on Dell Support website They all installed and worked perfectly without errors. Even the Synaptics Touchpad driver was installed without any error but the touchpad simply doesn't work.
In the device manager, under input devices, there is only USB mouse listed. That too disappears if  I unplug the mouse from USB. Under "Other Devices" there are 4 unknown devices. I tried installing them by right clicking>update driver>search online but it fails. I even tried that hardware troubleshoot option which tries to find drivers online and install but that too failed.
So i ran the startup Dell Diagnostics, and the touchpad worked fine in the diagnostic screen. But soon as windows boots, it stops respoding like it doesn't even exist.
I also tried 'clean boot' (Disabling all non-microsoft services and startup programs, i even tried disabling microsoft services too!) but i didn't work.
So at last, i formatted the hard drive and again and installed same windows again, this time as a clean install. But then again, the touchpad didn't work.

After I updated the BIOS (from Toshiba's website), the scrolling function stop working. I can still click, move the mouse pointer, but can no longer scroll through touch pad. Reinstalling Synaptics driver doesn't resolve the problem. The strange thing is that the computer only detects my touchpad as standard pointing device (port: PS/2) device. 'Pressure graph' and 'Moodpad' function also stop working and complain 'this program requires a Synaptics TouchPad and the Synaptics Pointing device driver'.
My computer is Satellite A200 PSAE0C-TR605C.

Does anyone know the reason?

Answer:Satellite A200 - Touchpad scrolling function stop working after update BIOS

Which operating system is installled and which is more interesting: which BIOS version did you installed?? Why I am asking? Because there are 2 different BIOS versions, one for Vista (1.80) and one for XP (5.20) which means when you flash a XP BIOS on a machine with Vista installed then some functions are not working properly like the FN keys or the touchpad.

Please check this out and make sure you have the proper BIOS installed.

I cannot uninstall/reinstall because apparently I am no longer admin on my own laptop and do not have the authority to do so.

So disappointed. any advice?

Answer:Asus after installing Windows 10 - touchpad smart gestures not working, no longer admin, very slow. How can I fix this?

Interesting, did you come from Windows 7 or Windows 8? I can see where things would go wrong with Windows 7 but from Windows 8 you should've been using your Microsoft Account and that should, theoretically, protect your Administrative rights.
Would you consider rolling back and jumping onto Windows 10 again? There's always a few bad upgrades. I'm sorry it had to happen to you but...I mean, it had to happen to someone, right?
If you're not willing we can try and update your drivers for your touchpad just to see if we can fix something. Open up Run by tapping [Win] + [R] and typing devmgmt.msc and pressing <enter>. Search for your touchpad and search for drivers. I've not had any issues with my drivers so I've not had to do anything with them, but maybe it'll help.

Recently recovered from a hard drive crash.  I've got the new OS working but didn't have the Dell Touchpad driver installed.
I downloaded the driver suggests for the computer.  The first time I ran it from Control Panel it worked fine.  I dislike using the touchpad and disabled it.
Every subsequent time I click "Dell Touchpad" from Control Panel, the computer pauses for a few seconds and gives me this message:
"Dell Touchpad has stopped working correctly.  Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."
I have reinstalled the driver several times.  I can enable/disable the touchpad using Fn + F3 and the notification icon is present in the system tray but whenever I run from Control Panel the program stops working correctly.
Any ideas what this is about?

I have been dealing with a loss of my touchpad\curser for awhile now, so have had to plug in a mouse. Yesterday I ran epsc pre boot assessment which took a good 1\2 hour I guess. After the program was completed, I was able to use my touchpad/mouse on the epsc program interface until I rebooted, than lost the touchpad\mouse. Thanks Keith
PS: In order to get out of the epsc program I had to reboot.

Answer:Dell Inspiron 15 3000 Laptop Touchpad Not Working

Well, that's good news in a way - as it means that the touchpad does work!

I've got a few questions to see what we can do to fix it:

Which OS are you using? Is it Windows 10 like before?
Are there any items showing in device manager that are missing drivers? They'll be marked as "unknown" or have an error icon next to them.
Assuming it's Windows 10, can you download and install the "Synaptics" touchpad drivers from here please:

If that doesn't fix it. Can you type "touchpad" on the start menu search and then see if the "on/off" toggle is enabled. It also may be worth looking at "Additional Mouse Options" on that same page to see if anything looks problematic there.

Hi. I'm a first-time user and happy to have found your website!

My operating system is Windows 7. I am using a wireless Logitech Mouse (uses USB hardware). I have had this laptop for 5+ years.

1. The touchpad will not ?turn off.? Under "Mouse" on the Control Panel, functions for the Dell Touchpad should allow me to simply turn the touchpad on and off. Regardless whether it is in the on or off position, it is still on.
2. Even when I don?t touch the touchpad, the cursor skips around the screen, highlights text and deletes text. Typed text re-locates within earlier typed text.
3. There is an on/off light at the top of the touchpad that indicates the touchpad is on/off. This is not working.
4. Also this panel item allows me to manage sensitivity, buttons, gestures & edge scroll & zoom. I can work these, but the Edge Scroll & Zoom buttons do not see to change the settings.

1. I have checked the drivers for both the touchpad and mouse and I get messages that they are each up to date
2. Because the touchpad will not turn off, I have tried to manage the buttons to turn down the sensitivity, to minimize movement of text. This does not help.
3. Turning on ?Disable Touchpad & Point Stick when USB Mouse present? does not disable the touchpad.

I have bought the Dell Inspiron 1545 in 2009 which it had Windows 7, then it stopped working for a long time after it has been fixed due to HDD problems and connectivity.
But now I have upgraded to Windows 8.1 yesterday and for some reason that my Touchpad/Mousepad has stopped working, so I am just wondering if it something to do with the drivers or the connections inside the laptop which it might be loose.
Does this laptop has an enabled/disable feature on the keyboard to lock the mousepad, which I might've accidently pressed which I can't find where it is on the keyboard.
Yours Sincerely,

SUBJECT: Touchpad not working. Pointer frozen.
Hello Dell,
This morning I woke up and to my surprise my touchpad has not been working at all. I am currently using a USB mouse, but would still like to know why this has occurred. Up until yesterday, it worked fine. I have had the laptop for almost 1.5 years now, with no problems at all.
Initially when I started the laptop, there was no pointer at all. I had to force shutdown the computer and start again.
When the laptop started up the 2nd time, the pointer was present, but was frozen. So I restarted the computer.
When the laptop started up the 3rd time, the touchpad worked for less than 2 minutes...then froze.
I have gone online looking for a solution, and it seems like nobody has a sure reason as to why this is occurring. The driver is fine and updated...I have checked touchpad settings as well, and everything is on (as in normal settings).
Can someone please help me in figuring out what the problem is?

Thank You

For about two months now, the touchpad on my Dell Inspiron 1420 has not worked properly. The touchpad does not respond to touch (at all) nor do the buttons work. Additionally, the touchpad driver does not show up in ?Device Manager? at all. The files do still exist under ?Dell Drivers? though and the application can be found under ?programs?.

So far, I have:

-uninstalled and re-installed the touchpad driver (many times). If I remove all files and re-install the drivers, and reboot as instructed by the prompts; the touchpad will usually work until I put the computer to sleep or restart it. Then, once again, no response at all. The icon in the bottom right of the desktop also disappears, as does the driver in ?device manager?. The files still exist though in ?dell drivers? and under ?programs?.

-started the computer in safe mode. The touchpad works fine anytime I am in safe mode.

-disabled all programs (programs that had that option) that run on start up. I did this thinking that a start up program was controlling the touchpad since it starts fine in safe mode. The Alps driver (for the touchpad) that should appear under start up programs does not and I have never disabled it when it did show up. Stopping all programs that run at start up did nothing to fix the touchpad.

-I run AVG anti-virus software every day and have run Ad-Aware antispyware multiple times but this seems to have no effect on the touchpad problem.

Two error messages appear during OS bootup:

Hi. I have a Dell Inspiron 14. 2Gb Memory Core2Duo.

I can;t scroll Sideways but I can going up and down.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Dell Touchpad not scrolling Sideways. But scrolling Up & Down

On both my Acer aspire one netbook (synaptics) and my Lenovo notebook (alps) I need to tab twice on the lower edge of the touchpad (to gain its attention?!?) and then it will scroll. Beyond that I believe you need to take a walk on the Dell support web site. There are number of 14xx models so you need to follow the steps there to find the freshest driver for your particular model. On both of mine the newest drivers have given scrolling as well as "pinching" to re-size pages, photos etc.

Dear all:

New to the forum.  Thanks in advance to anyone able to help.  I have two issues that seem to be related.  Today at some point I could not longer use my right or left click buttons on my laptop.  The touchpad still works in the sense that I can move my cursor and if I tap once on the touchpad (not the left/right buttons) then it will select a link.  There is no right-clicking capabilities on the touchpad itself.
I "attempted" to reinstall the driver.  Not sure if I was successful doing that, but seeing as how half of the touchpad functionality works, I'm not positive it's a driver issue.
After restarting my laptop I tried again to click on the left/right buttons and became frustrated and wanted to see if they were stuck, so I pressed down hard.  My laptop proceeded to shut off immediately.  Frustrated, I disassembled my laptop and checked out the touchpad sensor to see if I could spot something wrong.  Everything appeared to be in tact.  I reassembled and the laptop powered on, yeahh!!
I once again tried to press the buttons and nothing happening.  Again I pressed harder than normal and the laptop shut down.  I was going to disassemble it again however I got halfway before trying to power it on and the laptop powered on again.
My first issue is:  Why is my laptop suddenly shutting off when pressing hard on those buttons?
My second issue is:  How can I fix those button... Read more

I was playing a video game on my laptop around 4:30, when the keyboard suddenly stopped working. The mouse still functioned, so I tried clicking around to see if it was just a problem with the game. Then at 4:32, the mouse stopped working, too. I decided to try turning it off, but neither holding nor pressing the power button worked, so I unplugged the laptop from the charger and left it to run out of power on it's own. At 4:35, the display froze. I know this, because up until then the clock was still working. Currently, the vent fan is still running, and the screen is frozen. No keyboard buttons work, and neither the built-in trackpad nor an HDMI mouse is working.  Is there anything I can do to fix this, or do I need to send it in?The laptop was a brand new Dell Inspiron 15 7000 Series, with Nvidia GeForce GTX and an Intel Core i7.

So, my Y50 had right click problems. It was very unresponsive and progressively got worse. I sent it in for repair, the motherboard and touchpad was replaced. On receiving it, the new touchpad feels great. Right and left click works. But no gestures work. Synaptics also does not detect any actual touch from the touchpad, that is, the area in the tray icon that lights up when you touch the touchpad no longer moves. Is there a specific cable that detects touch and another that connects the touchpad itself ?

Hi, I've just bought my laptop, the gestures on the touchpad were working fine for a few days but have now stopped. Looking around the web it seems this could be to do with either the Windows 10 Creators Update, or the fact that I plugged in a USB wireless mouse. I've tried installing the Synaptics Touchpad drivers, and the correct drivers for this laptop from the HP website but it's still not working. Any help or suggestions would be gratefully received! Many thanks

Double check using the tutorial below to make sure that they are still turned on. Your settings will look different but similar since it's a different brand.

In addition, double check to make to see if you have the latest touchpad driver 1.0.36 version for your PC installed.

The previous driver allowed for edge scrolling but latest version does not have the capability.I understand for those upgrading to Windows 8 with touch screen capability this is not an issue but what about us who do not have touch screen. In my opinion this is a major flaw. Please let me hear form you if you too are unhappy about the new Windows 8 Touch pad driver. By the way, I tried rolling the driver back but the previous driver causes serious erratic behavior. Below is a screen shot of the version for the newest Windows 8 Touch Pad driver.

This problem appears on Windows 8.1

Try this:
1) Go into c:\program files\DellTPad\
2) In this dir I have
  a)  DellTouchpad.exe: this is the app called from control panel whose picture you posted.
  b)  DellTPad.exe alternate utility to set touchpad setting. When launching this I have this option (translating into english) "one finger actions/multi-finger actions", and then it allows you to set single finger vertical/horizontal scrolling.

Hi, I'm new to the forum, so I hope I posted in the correct place. My product: HP Pavilion Notebook - 15-ab045sa (ENERGY STAR) I have all the usual touchpad gestures working (three finger swipe etc).  However, the recent AU introduced a new gesture to switch virtual desktops. I was really looking forward for this update but this gesture doesn't work! I tried reinstalling the AU update with erasing everything and it still doesn't work! I don't get why it doesn't work as I have a precision touchpad and all the other gestures work except for this new one! Also even though the some gestures work (eg three finger flick), I dont think Win 10 recognises the precision touchpad as under Mouse & Trackpad settings it doesn't say that I have a precision touchpad and so doesn't give me options to alter what the gestures do, like it should. I have the  Synaptics SMBus TouchPad driver (21/07/2016). Would really appreciate your help as I was really looking forward for the new gesture to switch virtual desktops. Thanks.

So I hope that someone who is working at Acer reads this. Or someone who is technically advanced. So I first noticed the issue with sensitivity. The mouse was really sensitive. I then noticed that the gestures don't work either. I cannot scroll using the mouse. So I went into great depths and tried to figure out the problem (but no solution). So I performed these steps:Changed the pointer speed to the fastest (I didn't like the slow pointer speed). The pointer was still pretty slow.Decided to change the TouchPad specific drivers. I go to the ELAN tab under mouse settings. I look and see that the "Options" button is greyed out. I also noticed that it said "Standard PS/2 Mouse"I decide to find the software to change the settings and located it in C:\Program Files\Elantech. I open ETDAniConf.exe and decide to do a test. I uncheck the right click and left click, and some other scroll settings. No avail. Then I decide to uninstall and install the drivers. Did that. Nothing changed. Changing the tapping, button, scrolling options does nothing. The mouse settings still shows it as "Standard PS/2 Mouse" even though the tab says ELAN.I decide to take a big step and just reinstall Windows 8 altogether using Acer Recovery. Reinstalled it, still facing the same issue. Still recognized as "Standard PS/2" mouse.I try another way to attempt to fix the issue. I try to find the most up to date similar driver. I located on that was much newer (2013 version rather than 08.2012). Instal... Read more

I don't have a G580 here for testing but can you consider uninstalling your current ELAN touchpad driver (reboot if necessary) then install this version:

Version ELAN / Synaptics19.0.13.0 (2nd)
82 MB
When finished, press the  Windows key? +X, choose Control Panel then open Mouse (mouse properties) > ELAN tab and check if horizontal/vertical scrolling is enabled.

I'm new to this forum so I don't know if this is the right place to post this.

Anyways, recently I installed Windows 7 32bit on my Toshiba Laptop, everything went well and I installed all the drivers that I needed in order to make webcam and function keys to work etc.

However I do have one problem, my touchpad scrolling doesn't seem to be working after the install, now I am unable to scroll up and down, left and right with my touchpad. I have tried looking for any drivers which can help solve this problem but I havn't been able to find any regarding the touchpad.

Could anyone be able to help me with my problem? Would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Hi SA90,

Normally you have to install the touchpad driver for using the virtual scrolling function. I have checked the Toshiba website and I could find a touchpad driver for Windows Vista 32bit. Normally the Vista drivers are also work on Windows 7. > Support & Downloads > Download Drivers

Check this!!!

I run my x240 with windows 7 professional 64 bit.I recently updated a lot of software both compulsory and suggested by lenovo through Lenovo System Update.Since then I encountered one specific problem with the touchpad.I always used the three finger swipe gesture to move back and forth in webbrowsers and pictures.A left swipe would go back and right swipe forward. This is also what the video shows when you open the touchpad settings to exemplify the three finger swipe gesture. This also abides the same principles of the arrows, present on any webbrowser. Left back right forward.Since i updated the drivers it now operates the opposite way: a three finger swipe to the left goes forward and to the right backwards. It is counterintuitive and I would like to change the settings, but that option is not present anywhere. I only have the alternative between enabling or disabling the three finger swipe. This makes no sense and actually it worked just fine before then.

I have had problems recently with my touchpad.  It works but just basic point and click, no scrolls, swipes or any other gestures.  I have a Aspire V5-122P.  I have tried to install both the Synaptics and Elan drivers from the website and the Elan from my Acer Recovery.  Niether driver has any advanced function of the touchpad.  Elan drivers always leave the tray icon with an exclamation point on it the touchpad.  When I go to the mouse properties and the Elan tab, everything is greyed out, no device shows up in the box and all the icon options are greyed out.  The Synaptics driver only shows clicking options like reversing the right and left button function.  This used to work several months ago and then I started to see this exclamation point and lost all scrolling ability.  What can I do to repair this problem? Thanks

Answer:Aspire V5 122P Touchpad Gestures not working

What operating system are you running?
Have you tried reinstalling the driver from Acer eRecovery management?
If reinstalling the driver does not resolve the issue, my best suggestion would be to run eRecovery to return the system to factory settings and check the touchpad to see if gestures work. If they still don't work, I recommend you contact technical support in your region to inquire about service.

This will be easier if you have a usb mouse and/or keyboard to use while correcting your laptop.
Go into settings, devices, device manager. In device manager expand mice and other pointing devices.
Right click your touch screen device (Elan Input Device), and left click uninstall to uninstall the driver.
Windows will want to restart to complete the action. Allow Windows to restart, it will reinstall the driver, and you should now have functionality returned.

after the update to Windows 10, I have less touchpad gestures available. Before, I could use 4 finger swipe to the sides to change the tabs in the browser. When I go now to the DELL touchpad software, there aren't any options anymore for 4 finger gestures. And instead going back/forward with a 3 finger swipe to side, it changes the apps now (which is unnnecessary for me because a swipe up opens task view). Is it possible to change the actions of the touchpad and get back the 4 finger gestures?
For me it's incomprehenisble why DELL reduces the functions of the touchpad with the upgrade to a newer OS...

Hi guysI downgraded my G505s OS from Windows 8.1 to 7 professional and now touchpad is acting strange. I can't get multi-touch gestures to work.I have tried to install both, Synaptics' generic driver and driver downloadable from Lenovos support pages.  Strange thing is that after I've logged in to the Windows, lower-right corner shows brief picture which indicates touchpad being disabled by pressing F6. Touchpad still works though, but in a very generic way. Also I can't open ELAN/Synaptics-settings from Mouse Properties, since touchpad is "Disabled" after logon. Any ideas?

Answer:G505s - Touchpad multi-touch gestures not working

You will need to uninstall the current drivers for your hardware.   Once uninstalled, download and install Windows 7 drivers for the right touchpad (Elan or Synaptics) based on your notebook specifications. If you do not know which touchpad you have, you can use Device Manger to determine the Touchpad's Hardware ID, search for the Hardware ID information on Google then install the right one. Good luck.

I bought my Acer Aspire E1-472P-6860 about a month ago, and while the laptop is great, Im suffering from the same issue. My touchpad and gestures were working fine up until about 4 days ago, rougly around when I got another series of updates from microsoft for windows. My touchpad still works, but my gestures are long gone and I have no idea on how to get them back. I've tried downloading the ELAN drivers from the drivers page acer provides, but that didn't help at all, and now my tray icon just looks like this: In addition to this, whenever I try to go and look at my mouse settings in control panel, the options pane for my ELAN options comes up blank, like this:I'm at a loss for what to do I'm literally fuming to try and get my gestures back after I JUST figured out how awesome they are, and I could realy use some help on this matter as I don't want to factory reset just yet.

If your laptop came with 8.1 and you didn't update from 8.0, try reinstalling the driver from Recovery:

Last week I accepted a Microsoft Windows update. Sine that update I can not get the Satellite to recognise its touchpad and the only driver updates that work are for a standard PS2 mouse. I can no longer use the bottom and side scroll features of the Toshiba touchpad. What drive am I looking for to rstore the touchpad please?

Answer:Satellite A210 touchpad scrolling disabled after Windows Vista update

You can find the Touchpad driver here:

Firstly remove the driver from Control Panel -> Programs and Features
Then download and install the latest version.

If you have Logitech mouse drivers or other 3rdparty mouse/keybiard drivers installed, remove those as well.

I'm running a Dell XPS 15 Laptop with Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.  My Synaptic Touchpad stopped working after I updated an academic research program called Papers.  I don't know if that program caused these problems or not, but I'm afraid of uninstalling it because I may lose a lot of data.  (Long story, it's an expired trial version, and to export the data I would have to pay a fair bit of money, which I'm trying to avoid.  Right now all I want is to be able to scroll again.)
Anyway, the pointer would just remain in the default place on the screen, and when I use the keyboard to navigate to the Mouse section of Control Panel it says it "Cannot Connect with Synaptics Pointing Device", etc.
So I uninstalled the Synaptics software, and restarted.  Now the touchpad works fine, but without any of the vertical or horizontal scrolling capabilities that the Synaptics software had.
So, here's the current situation: if I install the latest Synaptics touchpad driver from the Dell site, the touchpad doesn't work at all.  If I uninstall it, and reboot with just the PS/2 Mouse generic Windows driver, the touchpad works but without any scrolling options.
I updated the BIOS to A12 from A06, but it didn't fix the problem.
Thank you so much for any help and suggestions!  Let me know if you need any more info.

Answer:Synaptic Touchpad stopped working, but will run with the generic windows driver. No scrolling.

Anybody here want to take a stab at it?  Or direct me elsewhere?  Much appreciated.

Just purchased a new Inspiron 15 3000 series laptop and booted it up for the first time today.  I am having difficulty figuring out the touchpad, specifically the scrolling.  It worked initially during set up, but then once I had that done, I can no longer get it to scroll - at all.  I have looked through all settings, and it seems like everything is right.  The drivers are up to date as well.
What can I do?

My touchpad cuts out occasionally for no apparent reason. The scrolling, zooming and other features will no longer work. I can move the cursor around but it will lag. I have to restart or sleep/wake up the laptop to restore the touchpad functions.
Can anyone help with this issue?

Answer:Inspiron 3137 ram compatibility

Hi SYSTEM2020,
The Inspiron 3137 supports a max of 4GB memory.
Find the compatible memory modules from Crucial here -
Having said this, the corsair memory should be compatible as well.
Let us know if you have any other queries.

I'm having many issues with my touchpad/trackpad.
- Touchpad loses its function (scrolling, gestures) after using for a while or after sleep/standby mode.
- Touchpad keeps freezing, the pointer constantly stops moving for a short period, like 5 seconds (but I can still do right click) only when I use touchpad. I can still use external mouse normally.
Hope someone can help.

I am using Dell Inspiron 3137 touchscreen laptop. The  laptop came with Windows 8 pre-loaded, which I upgraded later to Windows 8.1. Later again Windows was upgraded to Windows 10. Also, I upgraded my RAM  from 2 GB to 8GB Crucial DDR3L RAM.
The laptop was working fine after all this for about 3 to 4 months, when about 3 days back I thought of trying to use Windows7 on this laptop. The problem was, laptop was not booting through pen drive.
So, I went into BIOS and turned secure boot off. Also I changed boot mode from UEFI to Legacy. After that I saved the settings and did exit  from BIOS. I restarted my laptop with pen drive inserted, but the laptop stuck at Dell logo during restart..
Now, since then, the laptop is stuck on Dell logo, with half of blue bar filled, and message displaying : f2 for BIOS, f12 for boot.
No button pressing, either f2 or f12 or any other button pressing is working. Only the laptop restarts upon pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del.
I have tried draining the static by removing battery, removing CMOS battery, and using only AC Power......but to no avail. The laptop won't complete POST.
Please help !!

Answer:Inspiron 3137 POST incomplete

Are you still trying to install 7 or simply trying to return the 8.1 boot?
If you're trying to get back to 8.1, did you ever start the 7 install?
If not, reset the system to UEFI mode and secure boot and Windows 8 should once again load.

Hi, I purchased a 3137 with Windows 8.1. Earlier this year I succumbed to windows marketing and upgraded to windows 10 after confirming with the Dell website that my laptop was compatible. Immediately I started having issues with drivers and hardware causing BSOD. I used the built in windows software to roll back to Windows 8.1. During one of the reboots in the rollback the laptop stopped at the Dell logo, it was like that for approx 4 hours before I turned it off. The laptop will no longer boot. I am unable to get BIOS or boot options.
I turn the laptop on with the power key and the Dell logo comes up. If I press Ctrl-Alt-Del it will restart so I know the keyboard is recognised. I have pressed (and held) the Fn key for no result, I have also pressed F12, F2 and Del during start and again no result. I have removed the CMOS battery and the RAM and main battery, the motherboard is giving beeps when I do that so I know it is doing the POST test.
Is there anything else I can try before I declare it dead and vow never to buy a Dell product ever again?Thank you

I have purchase multiple xps 13 and inspiron 13 laptops and observe the same issues.  I tend to use the touch pad with my right hand's index finger, and click the touchpad button with my left hand's index finger.  It's a quick way to get things done.  Many in my organization do this, too and have been running into problems.
However, quite frequently (but not all the time) when I click the button with my left hand the cursor jumps to another location on the screen.  Frequently this is the lower-left corner of the screen, but sometimes it is the upper right, too. This causes different windows to come into focus, or it activates the start menu.  Really , really annoying, and it happens on both laptop models.  Our previous Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro and Acer laptops did not have this issue.
I think this has to do with the touch pad thinking that the user has two fingers on the touch pad and moves the cursor thinking the finger jumped around the pad.  Otherwise the gestures and movement of the touchpad is fine.
Is this a known issue to Dell?  It's really aggravating and other users in my organization are complaining as well.  I may need to return the lot (3 XPS 13, 5 Inspiron 13 machines ) and look at different hardware.

I have a Dell XPS 13 (early 2013), and after upgrading to Windows 10, my trackpad doesn't scroll in any window, despite my trackpad settings being all set up for this.
I have the latest cypress trackpad driver that worked on windows 8.1.

When my Dell Inspiron 11 is plugged in, the power/battery indicator light is solid amber. When it's unplugged, it's somewhere between amber and white--almost like a pinkish white. It's charging and working fine both plugged in and on battery power.
Another symptom that has started at about the same time is that the USB ports don't seem to be recognizing hardware and when I ran a diagnostic, I got an error W11US-362 error (haven't figured out where I'm supposed to look it up!).
Any advice about what to do next? Thanks in advance.

Just bought an Inspiron 5759 from Dell Canada.
Touchpad is very squirrelly - move around and it randomly perceives a click hence starts moving or invoking stuff.  Try to click left or right button (bottom left or right of touchpad) and the cursor moves so I can click on wrong thing easily.  Looked for Touchpad settings under Control Panel Mouse.  Nothing there specific to touchpad - just generic mouse settings.  Looked in Device Manager - Mouse and Pointing Devices - see HIID compliant mouse and PS2 compatible mouse.   Driver for either is from Microsoft dated 2006.
Ok - load newest driver from  Claims it installs ok - wrong.  The Dev Mgr shows same Microsoft drivers.  Manually force driver to Synaptics - Dell TouchPad.  Looks like it succeeds.  Now, Dev Mgr shows two mouse devices: Dell Touchpad and PS2 Compatible mouse.  Try control panel - Mouse.  Now I see a Dell Touchpad tab but the only field - Change Dell Touchpad settings - does nothing.
Spent 6 hours trying to get help from Dell Support - worst experience with any support organisation (other than HP who managed to toast a notebook via remote control while trying to install a printer driver - never did work.)  Absolutely no improvement in situation.  Four times put on hold and line drops.  Considering strongly returning the notebook.
Went to BestBuy and looked at 8 Inspiron  and XPS computers on demo.  Not a sin... Read more

Answer:Inspiron and XPS laptops running Windows 10 cannot install Dell/Synaptics Touchpad driver

With Win 10, touchpad drivers are found in the Win 10 Settings, selected in the Start Menu. In addition, many newer laptops are using a Precision touchpad, a Microsoft inspired pad. The driver is incorporated in Windows itself, and a regular driver will not work. This is why you don't see anything in the "old" Windows Control Panel app or in the Device Manager.

So I've just picked up my brand new Dell XPS 13 (9343) laptop today and everything is working perfectly. The only issue that I have with it at the moment is the touchpad scroll speed as I feel it is too slow for my liking. I can't seem the find the touchpad settings in the control panel, nor can I find any relevant drivers for the model that I have.
Is there a way to increase the scroll speed?

Answer:Dell XPS 13 (9343) touchpad scrolling speed.

i'm facing similar issues here. the touchpad reacts way to slow when i'm moving the curser or if i scroll up/down. it takes around half a second to move the cursor.
is there any way to fix this?

Answer:Dell Inspiron 3537 Auto Scrolling

Could you confirm there are no stuck keys on the keyboard? Especially the Page down and Down arrow keys.
Try connecting an external keyboard and mouse to check if that makes any difference.
Thank you
