SP2309W not working with laptop: recognised, but screen still black

Question: SP2309W not working with laptop: recognised, but screen still black

I know this monitor works as I have been using it with my desktop. However when I plug it into my laptop the laptop recognises it, but the monitor stays black with 'No HDMI Cable' (have set it to Auto Select and tried manually changing cable type, doesn't help.) Worst of all, I set the monitor as my main display so now I can't even access the display settings when I plug it in! Have tried downloading the only driver I could find for it (webcam one) on Dell site, no help.

Help please!

Hi,

I really need some help with this issue as I need this monitor to do my work. My Asus VK192 monitor turns on fine and even displays the desktop fine, but only for a couple of seconds. This has been going on about a week, I have previously fixed the issue by turning the monitor on and off several times until it stayed but now it just wont keep the image. Strangely, the actual monitor never loses it's connection and the IO light stays on.

Because it is clearly capable of working I can only assume this is a driver issue. The options to update the monitors drivers are all greyed out and Asus only have multiframe and lifeframe downloads which seem to be extra software for managing your monitors, not dedicated drivers.

I have looked and looked but the only solutions I have found are "buy a new monitor" or "buy a new graphics card". I need this sorted asap and can't really afford to buy anything. As it does work for a couple of seconds, there has surely got to be a fix?

My graphics card is an nvidia geforce 9800 gt if that is of any help.

TIA

Answer:Black screen ACI VK192 monitor recognised and working

Hi welcome to the forum

from what you describe its most likely a faulty monitor. monitors do not have drivers they are plug and play. you would need to have testing equipment to figure out whats actually faulty in the monitor. which probably cost more than what the monitor is worth. and bring it to a repair shop probably not going to be worth it neither. probably cheaper to replace monitor. unless you still have warranty on the monitor.

I went to CNET to find the best monitor for its price and the Dell SP2309W seemed promising. It has a 2048x1152 resolution and ranked high in best of monitors division. I have ordered parts for my new i7 computer build that arrives tomorrow. Luckily the monitor arrived today and I was very excited as I unpacked it and then finally plugged it in to my laptop via my laptop VGA output. To my disatisfaction, it looks like absolute crap. The screen is too bright, too colorful and too much noise / dithering. There are things that you can tolerate, this one is just untolerable.

I used the NVIDIA control panel to set everything to the right resolution. Did the monitor auto adjust thing. Currently my laptop LCD screen is only 1920x1200 by default so duplicating the image shows a bad result. What I did was "Project Only" using my Windows 7 Professional and the screen looks like absolute crap. I have 50" Panasonic Viera G15 and my laptop can output it via HDMI perfectly. I can watch HD 1080p movies without a hitch and can even browse the web on my TV. This monitor is absolute crap though as the color, sharpness, contrast and all that jazz is crappy.

My theory I wish is that my monitor / laptop sucks at VGA cable? I am gonna have to wait until my computer components come so that i can use the DVI-D on my Radeon 4850 crossfire. Let me know what you guys think. Is this normal to have for a new monitor?

p.s. yes i did adjust the color, contrast on the monitor settings / ... Read more

Answer:SP2309W Looks Horrible on Laptop?

My best ever display that I've ever used was an old Sony Trinitron CRT monitor. Color, sharpness, everything was great, that was until it blew a power supply and died a few years ago....

But getting to your issue. I would reserve judgement until you can run that display off a digitial connection whether that be a DVI or HDMI. VGA is an analogue signal and will really struggle to run a screen at such as high resolution (this is part of the reason why digital was invented).

If its still giving you grief running from a digital input, then it might be worth giving the manufacturer a call to see if something is actually wrong with the screen.

Answer:my laptop not working only black screen

Hello! Does it show the ASUS logo when turned on or it stays blank the whole time? Have you tried removing the RAM memory and placing it back? Does your laptop have a dedicated video card (not onboard) ? First of all, what is the model name? When you connect it to the plasma do you press the Fn + F5 (i think it is F5) or the key that has the symbol of a monitor on it?

Hi

I upgraded to Windows 10 on Sunday and all was well. When I went to log in on Monday the laptop screen was completely black. It sounded like it was working ok but I couldn't see anything (not even the cursor).
I plugged an external monitor in and that was ok. I tried going onto the display and extending it (as I do when I have 2 screens working) but that did no good. Have tried a few things but the laptop screen is still black.
Any help would be gratefully received

Thanks

So I've just recently bought a Windows 8 touch screen computer. A strange problem has occurred after a week's use - as soon as I plug in my adaptor to charge the battery, the screen goes black, yet the computer keeps working. When I unplug the adaptor, make the computer go to sleep and open the lid again, the screen is lit up (when it runs on battery mode). Could I have changed the sleep/hibernate mode settings by accident or something?

Answer:Computer keeps working, laptop screen goes black

Guess, it's a HP machine?
Plug in the charger, power up, then boot up.
See if it works then.

Laptop: Vostro 1520 Dell.

On bootup screen remains black but Hard drive make snoises and clear normal sounds are heard. I presume all else is working but the laptop screen does nothing.

I tried hooking up to an external monitor but it acknowledged an input and said "Monitor going to sleep" then remained blank.

I have also taken the panels off and cleaned the inside as well as removing the battery and using just a plug. No luck.
Any help would be neato!

Hi there,

After a hard drive failed on me, I replaced it with a maxtor.

After installing Windows 7 on the new hard disk everything went to plan. However, the second hard drive can not be found. Not even in device manager (therefore I can not assign a new drive letter/path?!)

Another thing, would be if i leave the 2nd hard drive in on boot up windows 7 will not boot up fully, however hang on the "loading" screen of win 7?

If I unplug it, reboot the computer it logs onto win7 perfectly fine without a problem?

Any pointers lads?

Cheers,
Sam

Hi all,

Upon upgrading to w10 I encountered the black screen issue. When plugging in another screen to the HDMI adapter on my laptop the display appears working perfectly. The laptop screen only shows anything during boot, as soon as the system starts it sits with a black screen.

If i disable the onboard gfx and reboot the screen will display on the laptop, however it is using "microsoft basic display" and not the onboard gt 555m

I have up to date drivers from g force, I have up to date drivers from intel. I am at a loss as to how to solve this.

When another monitor is connected it works absolutely perfectly. The issue is it just wont pick up the laptop screen at all.

Edit - The issue seems to be the GT 555 graphics card. The onboard is the one that's actually detected and working however this is only as an external monitor not with the laptop display. GT 555 is updated via the Nvidia app and says it's W10 ready, yet it's not functioning in any capacity it seems.

Answer:Display adapter not being recognised, black screen issue.

press WIN+P and use the "copy displays" option (second from the left)

I have a Dell Inspiron N5110 from 2011. Windows 10 is installed and working, Using it right now but with an external monitor. Found several posts about booting into a black screen but they seem to only be the case when there is a cursor floating round as well.

My problem is that when I boot up the laptop I get the windows 10 loading screen. Then it goes black and stays black. The screen is definitely on but not showing anything. And I've left it for an hour and nothing happens. But when I plug in a second monitor it works on there and seems to detect this second monitor as the only one. Once this monitor is attached, the laptop screen turns itself off and cannot be turned back on, not even to the state it was in before of just being black.

Checked and all drivers are up to date. If I change the settings, by hitting windows key and p, to extend the screen then i can drag the mouse from the second monitor into apparently nothing so I really can't tell if the computer knows about its own screen or not. Also sound is working through the laptop, don't know if this helps.

Any help is greatly appreciated, kind of need this laptop for work but would like it to be running win 10.

Answer:Laptop screen doesn't seem to be recognised

Try going to setting's > system display > scroll down to, Advanced display setting's >

Multiple display's > click on the drop down arrow > choose Duplicate these displays > Apply.

This will have both screen's active.

I just tried this on my laptop and external monitor and it work's perfect.

I have a Lenovo Yoga 13 that is out of warranty. I bought it in 2013.  With that out o' the way, my Lenovo Yoga 13's screen stays black even when the power is on...I see no Lenovo logo or anything AND the laptop keeps restarting on its own, so it is stuck in restart mode, with the screen staying black the whole time.  This laptop has been doing this (black screen even though power is on and shuts off and restarts on its own) for about 6 months now....(Jan 2017-June 3, 2017 as of this writing). This laptop works WHEN IT WANTS TO EVERY ONCE IN AWHILE, BUT NOT OFTEN.  I turned the laptop on now, and I'm typing on it now, **BUT when it doesn't work, which is most of the time**, it shows a black screen (I see nothing on the screen) even with the power on and constantly restarts on its own. Is this hardware issue a motherboard problem or a screen issue specifically? Specifically, is it the motherboard that needs to be fixed on this Yoga 13 or is it a screen issue? If it's a motherboard issue that needs to be fixed, how much would it cost? Or If it's a screen issue, how much would that cost to fix? Any help on this is much needed!

Hello Complex1Thanks for using the Lenovo forums.

Sounds like this will be an issue with the HDD or MOBO instead of the Display I believe.
Try running an LSC scan, it may be able to detect a hardware issue on the unit.
1. Please click on the following link2. Under the section ?Download? select the relevant Hyperlink dependant on whether your Lenovo is running Windows 7/8/8.1 32 bit or 64 bit. 3. When prompted, select save and browse to a drive and directory in which to save the downloaded files. 4. Navigate to the folder where you saved the installation file, lscsetup_x86_26001.exe. 5. Double-click the installation file icon to start the installation. 6. Follow the onscreen instructions via the installation wizard that will install Lenovo Solution Centre on your system. 7. Once installed you will have a ?Lenovo Solution Centre? icon on your desktop please click to open this. 8. Once solution center is opened please select ?Checkup? then ?Hardware Scan? and ?Full Scan? 9. This will take up to 20 minutes, see if this can find any errors.

Hey all, My wife's laptop, e420, has been having issues for the last 3-4 months. It started where she would shut the laptop and it would not go to sleep, the screen would just be black. You would have to hit the power button to wake up. A new issue is that we get the dreaded blue screen. The error shows that there is a problem power management when shutting the laptop. I have tried to debug the dump file with little help and I have updated all the drivers. I have a feeling the power management drivers became corrupt on an update but not sure. Any thoughts? I have updated the bios as well. Thanks!

Hi,
I have a Lenovo Thinkpad Edge with an Intel I5 processor, 64 bit with no hardware upgrades (stock). I had accidentally stepped on the screen (fell off my lap and then crunch) which was mangled beyond repair, so I have been using it similar to a tower, with a VGA and/or HDMI connected monitor (my HDMI cable went bad, I picked up a new cable but hadn't hooked it up to the second monitor.
I started my free upgrade from Windows 7 Home Premium to 10 last night. I woke up to the black screen/mouse pointer issue which is what brought me to this thread. I tried the recommended fix:
1. Hit ctrl, type in password and enter
2. Win Key + P + Down Arrow. (Win Key + P only seems to do the same thing)
This brought up options to
1. Disconnect projector (Tried this and lost connection to the VGA even after reboot)
2. Duplicate (Screen is still black with mouse cursor, but I saw a little bit of red and blue pixels at the bottom where the task bar should be until I disconnected and re-connected the VGA, then it was back to black screen and cursor)
3. Extend (still black screen and cursor)
4. Connect Projector (still black screen and cursor)
I'm not sure what to do. I must have some OS installed, because I am able to also perform these operations from my USB Keyboard/Mouse. I'm just not sure how to get Windows back on my VGA connection (I haven't tried HDMI because I did not have it connected when I ran the update.) I thought Duplicate displays would do the trick, but apparently not. For a... Read more

Hello and thanks for reading,

I have a 2 year old HP pavilion dv6 series laptop running windows 7. Yesterday I turned it on and it started normally but when I tried to browse on Firefox it gave me the blue screen (for the first time ever) and it shut down. Fearing I had a virus I ran it in safe mode and started a scan and began transporting my pictures via Dropbox just in case it died on me. Sure enough a weird error message (couldnt figure out what program made the message pop up) popped up saying I had a bunch of urgent viruses.. I didn't click on it at all and before I couldn't think of what to do the blue screen popped up and it shut down. When I tried to restart it the HP splash sign popped up and the screen flickered black and a blinking cursor started in the upper left corner. So this is where I stand now... Black screen with blinking cursor. Set default setting in BIOS (didn't work) and F8 (safe mode) or F11 (system restore) does nothing... The black screen just stays there. Any ideas? Is it a gonner? I'm hoping to get back on and get my pictures if possible. Help please!

Boot the computer and press F8 in the Advanced Boot menu choose Last Known Good Configuration.
What is the make and model# of the computer? Go to the manufactures support/download drivers site and download the Chipset and the Video driver for the computer.
Go to Start/Search and type powercfg.cpl. Right click the powercfg results and Run As Administrator. Click Change Plan Settings/change Advanced power settings. Reset your power settings to your liking.

It sounds like either the LCD cable or Backlight are needing to be checked, and possibly replaced.  This is not somthing most users can easily accomplish and would require the unit be sent to a service center for diagnosis and repair.

This is then due to inverter from screen that has stopped working, it controls the backlight part of LCD/LED screen when it breaks it cause the backlight to turn off and wont go on so you would need to have inverter re-placed with a new one. Here is a example of how it looks like: it may look diffirent on each model but this is just an example from a T41 from lenovo.

Hi,

A disclaimer before I proceed. Im not the best with computers or computer terms.
I have a Samsung laptop (not sure of the model), and the screen broke months ago. Since then I've been using an external monitor without any issues until today. When I start up my laptop I can never see anything displayed on the external monitor until the log in screen. The monitor will always go into hibernation mode until the log in screen.

However, today it's taking longer to start up and I cant see what's going on. At first I thought windows was performing a disk scan but i waited over an hour! So that must not be the issue. I want to find a way to display what is happening on the external monitor if possible. I have been endlessly searching all day online for help. I would really appreciate any help/advice.

Thank you!

I recently did a factory restore on my laptop since it was giving me really bad problems before(BSOD on boot, unable to start in safe mode, etc). I assumed that it was caused by a bad video driver installation. Once I did my factory restore, this problem was solved, but it seems like a new one arose.

In the first few days the laptop was working fine, but I recently realised that if I unplug my AC Adapter, my laptop would work for awhile but will eventually die. The screen would just go black, then I would see weird colors and then it would go black again and I would be forced to hold the power button and restart. The funny thing is, this never happens when I have it plugged in.

I then realised that it happened when I plugged it out and moved it around, so I assumed it had something to do with the wiring inside my laptop. But it seems that isn't the case since even if I move it around while it's plugged in, it doesn't happen. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with my power supply at this point, but I'm not really sure.

If anyone can help, I would really appreciate it!

EDIT: It just happened to me as I tried to access my task manager. I did CTLR+ALT+DEL and my screen went black, and my laptop simply restarted itself.

Answer:Laptop screen failure; random colors followed by black screen

EDIT: It seems it has gotten way worse. It happened while it was plugged in, and not only that, but when I tried to turn on my laptop again, the screen remained black and I heard these beeping noises. (6 beeps in succession, over and over) Sometimes I turned it on and it didn't even beep. I managed to actually get my laptop to boot, but I'm afraid it will happen again.

Hello,
I have a Sony Vaio T-series laptop (model SVT13126CXS) running windows 7. As of yesterday the screen is black...it doesn't display anything.
Laptop powers on (lights are on, fan makes noise, etc.).
I was able to plug an HDMI cable from my laptop to my TV and I am able to use the laptop using my TV screen (laptop screen is still black, but displays on TV works).
And the odd twist... this is a touch screen laptop, so I am able to touch my laptop screen and it makes clicks and moves cursor on my TV. (for some reason, the track pad doesn't work while its on TV display though).
Any help would be greatly appreciated. If you can give me steps into diagnosing the problem, that'd be great!
I live in a small college town and there is only one computer repair shop and since it's a monopoly he rips people off. Charges $95 for a diagnostic (if you get it fixed, it goes towards the repair; if not, it's $95). Charged my friend $120 for macbook charger and it wasn't even an genuine Apple product!

Ever since about a month ago I have been having a problem to where my laptop, right after the the loading bar( minus the windows logo). I am able to boot into safe mode, and it works fine in it. I have reinstalled the graphics driver, and done a system restore, but none the less, it still doesn't work. I have searched for what seems like forever, but I still cant find it. Any ideas?

Answer:Laptop giving black screen after Windows loading screen (Vis

If the graphics driver is "buggy" or "glitchy", re-installing the same one isn't going to fix it. You need to try either the previous driver (if you've recently updated it) or check for a newer driver if you haven't recently updated it.If you want to try "rolling back" to the previous driver, right-click graphics adapter model in Device Manager and choose "Properties". Under the "Driver" tab, click "Roll back driver". (option won't be available if driver has not been updated).Alternatively, you can download the latest driver from Lenovo support. Choose the most appropriate site:UK: http://support.lenovo.com/en_GB/USA: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/You should also check Device Manager to see if any errors or conflicts are shown for any other drivers, as it could be some other third-party driver that's to blame.

I have a U530 that is out of warranty, but probably has been used around 7 months total. The screen was perfectly fine and after I closed the lid and reopened the led's no longer function on the screen. The screen is still active as I can see the display shadow with a flashlight. I also drive two external monitors through the USB ports with no problem. I have updated drivers with no conflicts. Does this just mean it was a defective screen and needs to be replaced or is it possibly a setting or driver issue.

Answer:U530 Screen not working / black screen

Hi anthonyziton ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

If you can turn off the pc and use the Novo key to start , BIOS setup screen that would have the same faint display would not be needing specific drivers since its using its firmware (working outside Windows) .

Same faint image as what you describe that would not flicker back to any good display indicate probable backlit issue rather than inverter cables. Graphics card would also be doing ok since external displays are fine.

Still you can have it checked with any local tech for a reseat (unplug and replug) or if you can follow the hardware guide and safety precautions.  Doing a power drain (removing the battery and unplugging the charger , then pressing power button for 15 seconds. ) can help refresh related power distribution issue.

You can get the part number using your serial number from the parts look up page and call in Lenovo parts sales for availability and costing. Likewise to match it with reputable resellers.

Update us how it goes.

Regards

I have two HP ZV6000 laptops. One of them works great, the other will not boot up to Windows XP. The one I am having trouble with gets the splash screen up and goes directly to a blank screen with a flashing cursor in upper left corner. (Looks almost like a DOS prompt screen but it is not). I swapped hard drives. Problem stays with the computer. Both hard drives are good and will boot up to windows in the laptop that works. I have changed DIMM sticks and problem stays with the computer. The computer I am having the trouble with will allow me to access BIOS Setup and both computer BIOS setups are the same. Soon as I exit the bios setup screen, the laptop I'm having trouble with goes to the black screen with cursor. I have read this may be a problem with the motherboard but I can't even boot it up with my WIndows recovery disk. Any ideas out there?

I have read this may be a problem with the motherboard but I can't even boot it up with my WIndows recovery disk. Any ideas out there?Click to expand...

Can you press a key like F11 to access the boot order and make sure the computer is attempting to boot from the HDD?

I'm having a weird problem. My laptop will show a black screen when booting. It seems no matter how long I wait, nothing happens. When I attach an external LCD to the laptop, it shows the Windows load or Windows resume graphics on the external monitor, but not on my laptop screen. As soon as the Desktop Screen with the Windows Login appears, it then appears on my laptop as well.

I also can't seem to get to safe mode. I push f8 and it never comes up I haven't installed any new software or hardware to cause this.
Any thoughts?

I have a gateway laptop (SOLO 5350) and the screen was horribly ripped off(during car accident). Well when I connect my desktop 17" monitor to the port on the back of the laptop and when the windows xp home edition boot screen is finished I get a black screen although the cpu is still workig properly and the monitor is still on. I reboot and press f8 and try to go into safe mode but it just hangs on the screen with all the driver names on it. Can someone guide me in a good direction before I take it to a repair shop?

Answer:Laptop screen damaged.....black screen at boot

Normally there's a Altfunction+key that switches the desktop from the LCD to a external monitor.. Look around on the top row of keys for a monitor symbol, then use the alternate function key with that key to switch to the monitor.

How do I fix an HP Compaq Laptop that has a black screen and will not boot? I can not put it in safe mode, and I get a message that the file is corrupt/missing. I am running Windows XP. I do not have the recovery cd or the original Windows XP cd. What can I do to fix this? It is helpful to note that when I try to place my laptop in safe mode, it will not let me, and it has on screen messages that has "multi disk partition\WINDOWS\system\32\ntoskrnl.exe, multi disk partition\WINDOWS\systom\32\hal.dll, and the same messages but ending with KDCOM.DLL, and BOOTVID.dll. Does anyone know what the problem is,and how to fix it? I do all of my college work on my laptop and I have lost all of my work and I am having to start over on my PC. HELP!!!

First post, but I have tried to uninstall video drivers, system restore, random registry fixes, and so forth. I also did a virus scan, showing 17 Trojans (I know, very bad). I am guessing that is how this happened, not sure though. Uninstalling the video drivers helps, until I need to restart it due to new software. Then I can sometimes get to the log in screen, but even after that, It just goes black after a few seconds. I have searched and searched all over, and have not found a fix. Any help?

Answer:Laptop with Vista has black screen after loading screen

Hi Hackrtanman,

firstly welcome to the forums

Can you post detailed specs of your system.

And can you try to boot into safemode and disable the video card drivers on the system from Device Manager and then restart the system and check.

I bought Pavilion Notebook October 2015.  Sometimes, the screen becomes black during my work. I'm worried about that, because the only way to go on my work, is to turn off the notebook and turn on again...Should I go to the assistance?is it a problem Win 10 maybe?thanks

It happens aproximately every 20 minutes

Supposedly everything on my computer turns off and my monitor says "no video input detected" turns black then goes into sleep mode(sound eventually also turns off and I wouldn't know of anything else is still working behind the black screen)

But the PC its self is still running with the small red light on and I can't do anything except click off the power button on my back, unplug or at the very least press the restart button. The general on/off button doesn't do anything

Before it started doing this I haven't used my pc for almost a week but as I came back today I opened the box to install in a new RAM card I bought which I put in my last available slot out of 4.

Afternoon all. Going bugg eyed looking for a relevant post that would help me out, so after an hours searching I'm posting my own dilemma.

Today my PC has been 'crashing' for want of a better phrase and showing a black screen. I thought the power was out, but it wasn't that. The PC seems to stop working, but it is running, but the screen goes into stand by mode. There's no noise, no warnings, just that the screen goes blank.

Basic diagnosis doesn't show anything. I've recently had my graphics card updated, so hope it's not that.

A couple of days ago on start up, the start up stopped on what I will refer to as the 'info' page, and amongst other things, said CMOS Check Sum Bad. Is this related?

System error reporting gives lots of ideas, including failure of winword.exe, DHCP issue and lost IP lease...

Any ideas gratefully received.

Emma.

I would suspect your graphics card upgrade, it the most logical conclusion.

Try updating the drivers.

Other than that suspect Malware.

I have a Satelite M30, I was watching a movie through another monitor when the battery died.

Now when I restart the screen is blank. If I attach it to the other monitor it is working fine but pressing "Fn+F5" will not bring my screen back to life.

Any ideas will be gratefully received.

Answer:Screen is black but Satelite M30 is working

Hi

The Fn+F5 key combination is one of two display change possibilities.

I think you will find a option for changing the display in the graphic properties.
You have to mark the monitor 1 and enable the option ?Use this device as the primary monitor?

I think this should enable the screen on the notebook.

Hello all,

I just moved to a new apartment. I packed the Computer in a padded box and transported it in my car.

I finally set my desktop up and I now have the dreaded black screen. No beeps, all fans, lights, hd lights are running.

I swapped my ram first and still persistent. I reinstalled my video card same thing.

Also, when I push the power on button, I'm not able to restart, or power down. Keyboard lights not on (ps2 port) and no usb port is working.

I'm at a loss now.

Please advise the next steps.

I appreciate your help.

Thanks

A friend of mine was using my laptop and installed a photo program called Gimpshop.  He restarted the comp and then right after the Welcome screen it goes black and only shows the mouse pointer.  I could move the pointer but nothing else worked.

I was able to boot into safe mode with networking.  That's how I'm on here posting.  Safe mode seems to work fine.

- I then ran a scan of Malwarebytes and it found a few things.  Deleted them all.  Ran another scan and it found nothing.

- I then ran a scan with AdwCleaner and it found 2 or 3 things.  Deleted them all.  Ran another scan and it found nothing.

Then for the hell of it I ran another scan of the three and nothing was found.

- Ran scannow from a command prompt.  It found nothing.

- Ran Start Up Repair from Windows Recovery disc.  No problems.  Also, I come to find out that System Restore was turned off.  I thought it had alwys been on, so I have no system restore images to revert to.

While I was playing guitar hero (and almost done with Through the Fire and Flames on medium ) my computer froze. I couldnt access task manager and it wasnt responding at all so I hit the reset button. Instead of booting properly, it didnt boot at all. The startup sounds still played and I could hear update sounds, and all that. Just the monitor remained inactive.

I have a viewsonic VG2230WM 22'' LCD. I checked all the cables, unplugged/replugged monitor's DVI cable, tried using D-SUB connection w/ adapter. Tried hooking LCD up to my laptop, but it wouldnt work.

I would greatly appreciate any advice you guys give.

Hi,

since yesterday I have a problem with my notebook. During working screen went whole black and notebook stop working. I cannot normally run notebook now because every time it stop working after few seconds and I can only it turn off.

I tried to find anything in BIOS but it stop working too so I don't have too much time. Once I saw comunicate 'Media test failure', I tried to reboot with a recovery disk but it stop reading DVD drive after few seconds as well.

I have Windows Vista, I don't think it's a virus. The moment from starting to shutting down computer is about 3-15seconds. And if I try to run it right after shut down it's stopping work faster.
Warranty service is 200km from me so I would be glad to get any help here:)

[edit]
I tried to take our and put in battery, doesn't change anything. Sometimes without battery I can't turn on notebook at all (it won't happen with battery inside).

Answer:Equium L40 - Screen went whole black during working

Hi

For me it sounds like a hardware malfunction because the DVD drive stops reading the recovery disk.

It?s really hard to say what is the reason for this, maybe it?s a problem of the mainboard or RAM.
The RAM you can test with Memtest86 ([www.memtest86.com]). There you can download an image for a bootable disk. Download it, burn it on a disk and boot from it. The test will start automatically and if the RAM is faulty the program should find it.

If Memtest86 can?t find an error I think you must sent the notebook to an authorized service provider. The technicians can check the notebook and exchange the faulty parts. I think they will help you as fast as possible.

Bye

Hello guys, I have a bit of a long story to tell you which i'm finding is very weird.
I bought a new PC around 8 months ago. Before 1 month or less, I started getting this issue where my PC (while playing games) would suddenly turn black and be unresponsive, ALTHOUGH I can still hear everything in the background (such as people talking on mics and videos..etc).
So I decided to rollback the graphics driver hoping it would be the issue, it stayed for a couple of days perfectly then started getting the issue again.
I downloaded a program called OCCT and ran a test which gave me an error 6 seconds in saying "CPU #3 (sometimes changes number) over maximum value". Searching online again says it means I need a better cooler ((which is still weird)).
So I decided to clean the laptop using air cans (the fans) and opening it from behind to brush off dust. I barely found any dust / or dust coming out of fans. I turned the laptop on after and still got black screen.
For the last test, I hooked an HDMI to my TV using the laptop and didn't encounter a black screen (for around 2-3 hours), so I decided to unhook the HDMI cable and as soon as I do that, my laptop get's a black screen!! (keep in mind I was duplicating the laptop screen to TV so both TV and laptop had picture).
I find this problem very weird and have booked it for a repair (unfortunately lost the warranty too). So I decided to post this to see if anyone might have a clue on what the actual problem could be. I'm clueless. ... Read more

The cable for the screen runs through one of the hinges. It can get worn and develop a short or crack in a wire that can break contact at times and then recontact. It could also be one of the connections at the screen or motherboard are not securelu plugged in. If you are still in warranty, you should book it in for warranty repair,http://customercare.acer.com/customercare/Default.aspx#_ga=1.247907972.2022145094.1423086767Take it to a repair shop, or fix it yourself, if you have the ability.

The webcam in my Dell SP2309W monitor worked just fine with the Aug 2015 version of WIN 10, but after installing the Anniversary upgrade (1607) it crashes the computer to a BSOD. I can only stop this by unplugging the USB connection to the monitor -  and thus losing both webcam and USB hub. I know Dell says (deplorably) that "they don't support WIN 10 with this monitor"  but there was no problem with the original version of WIN10. Does anyone know of updated drivers or other workaround that will restore use of the webcam?

TL;DR: Black screen with caps lock LED doing the two-flash (BIOS code) but hard restart and Win+B+power won't turn screen on, fan can be heard.I recently factory reset my laptop because the WLAN service wasn't turning on no matter what I did and SFC /scannow + registry edits couldn't fix it. The reset fixed connectivity issues but while I was reinstalling programs I got a blue screen, something along the lines of bad pool caller, and it never restarted after "finishing."I've tried the hard reset (take out battery and everything), as well as the Win+B+power BIOS fix because the caps lock LED is flashing but nothing will get the display to load. Fan is going so I know the laptop is on. Thank you in advance for your help!

Answer:Black screen (BIOS code) fix not working

Some of the instructions for Win key + B say to immediately release keys after releasing power button- while others say to continue to hold the keys for a bit. If you are using one technique I would try the other to see if any difference.http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c02693833

I've looked at other threads regarding the black-screen issue but my problem seems a little different.

Since I installed Windows 10 on my HP Pavilion laptop it boots up OK and I can get as far as my desktop. The taskbar settles in nicely and all seems fine.
But if I open any application and work on it for a few minutes the taskbar and everything else suddenly disappears. I generally can't close whatever programme I'm in but if I do manage to then instead of a desktop I have a blank black screen. Moving the cursor around is possible but there is literally nothing to open.
My only option is to ctrl/alt/delete for Task Manager and then shut down or restart. On restart, the same thing happens. It starts, I get to the desktop, everything looks normal, I open something then black-screen-death.

I am not using two screens.
Anyone know a fix?
Thanks
QG

Answer:Black screen death a few minutes after working normally

I'm just taking a guess here but I doubt its the cause . It sound like you have a setting that is set to turn off. Do things again but this time count the minutes that goes by before the black screen come on and afterwards restart the computer and do it again , notice whether the same minutes that goes by is the same from the first time . This way it would really sound like a setting is set at the possible cause . I will search further with your problem and see if anyone else might have the same issues and fix. Hi I am working on a PC 33 days ago I replaced the motherboard RAM and CPU in a PC the CPU is a AMD Athlon II X2 245 Regor 2.5GHz Socket AM# CPU I put in 1 G-Skil 2GB DDR2 800 RAM and a gigabyte GA-68M- S2P Micro ATX Motherboard It has a Antec SP-500 Smart Power 2.0 with a 20+4 Main connector. The power supply is 5 years old but I tested it with one those thermal take testers with the lights and it tested fine Here is the problem the person was playing solitaire and the sound quit she kept playing and then all of sudden the screen went black and it wouldn't shut down and she had to turn it off at the surge protector. Well I had her turn it on again and it wouldnt boot up. But when your turn it off in the back hard a weird sound comes out the speakers not the POST beeps I know those. When you start it there are no POST neeps either.I did not overclock the CPU either thats not my thing My thing is I know this stuff is all under warranty other then the PSU where should I look CPU or mainboard and how do I know for sure this is the first time ive seen a PC die like this. Im trying to be sure the lady is in a wheelchair and since there is alot of down time in going to the manufactor I wanna get it right cause winter is coming and she cant get out and this PC is her only escape any ideas to do a good test

Answer:Sound died while working, screen went black

Pull out the memory and see if the motherboard emits continuous beeps. If not, the motherboard is bad. While you are at it, try another power supply just to be sure. Does your power supply tester have leds for all voltages?

I am not sure what happened. Someone was using my computer and I don't know what they did. When I turned it on and did some document work it said no printer was found when I tried to print. So I thought I would go to "control panel" and see what was wrong. The control panel wouldn't come up and then I looked for other programs and they didn't show. I tried "RESTORE"
Now when I turn on my computer, it turns on and goes to the welcome screen and then goes the screen goes black. I have a pointer for my mouse on the screen but that is all.
I restarted my computer and went to startup repair, now I can hit ctrl/alt/delete and bring up task manager. I then hit new task and type a program (i.e. restore) and it will come up. I right click for properties and it shows read-only. It says access denied and you will need to provide administrator permission to change these attributes. click continue to complete this operation. When I click continue applying attributes to C:\windows\system32\restore\machineguid.txt keeps working but noting happens so I cancel and have to go back to task manager and end program. I am not sure if this has always been the case but I have a folder called program files and program files(x86). When I brought up restore all of my folders were displayed in a side panel.. I can I can bring up document and work with them, but it says no printer. Again I hit control panel and it just keeps working and brings up no folders and says no... Read more

Hi guys.
Recently I leave my WIN10 laptop working and gone for walk.
When I come back I find it with screen off in sleep mode.
When switched it on, the monitor remain black.
The operation led's in front were enabled. I plug it to TV with hdmi and after 5-6 hard reboots worked for some seconds with very bad image (stripes and green pattern).
After many attempts managed to get it work with WIN7 pro N and external monitor plugged to VGA port.
GPU is working with standard vga driver with typical resolution.
When installing the display driver (ATI Radeon 5650) the ext. monitor becoming black and only the mouse cursor is showed moving.
I 've tried to install linux (ubuntu, mint)... the same.
I decided to avoid spending money to fix an 8 years laptop and keep it plugged to TV as media center but nor Kodi neither Bluestacks working with Standard VGA Driver. GPU-z show GPU to working with high temperature (80 C)
So, does anyone have an idea what is the fault or how to enable some GPU features in order to run Kodi?
I suspect GPU but can't exclude build in monitor also.

Thank you for your patience to read my post.

Any ideas - thoughts are welcome

So, a few months ago, I got a new video card (9800gt GeForce) and I had to do the regular stuff, uninstall onboard card, set bios to boot PCI-E... But today I turned my computer on and the screen was black. So I plugged the monitor cable into the onboard slot, and it worked...? So I checked bios, and it still said PCI-E, and I downloaded drivers for the 9800, but it still doesn't work. I don't get what happened, so please help!
PS: I have Vista.

Answer:Black screen. Video card not working?

The integrated unit shouldn't even work with the dedicated adapter installed, so there is likely something wrong with the card itself. It's not a driver conflict, because the graphics card should operate without drivers. Try reseating the card in the PCIe slot and connecting the monitor back to the card, or the other port. If it still doesn't work, make sure you have the power dongle connected properly and that your power supply is working normally (you can check in BIOS to read the voltage ratings).

Hey, so my Toshiba Satellite is less then three months old and tonight it started acting up. In the last 3-5 hours the screen has gone black for just a second then comes back to normal, this has happened 4 times. I keep it on my bed or in the lap but make sure it's aired out well and the bottom doesn't feel too hot. I'm also not playing intense games or anything.Any ideas to what the problem could be?Thanks a bunch!

Answer:Laptop screen goes black for just a second

Try it on a hard surface, just because the bottom does not feel hot, the internal components may be getting hot. You absolutely need to allow air to flow IN from the bottom air vents which cannot happen easily with the laptop on a soft surface. If it works fine on desk, get yourself a laptop cooler so you can use it other places. If it still acts up on a desk, return it under warranty while you have a chance (back up our files first). You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Hey everyone. I'm hoping you can help me with this problem.

I have an Asus K55V laptop with Win7 installed. I normally use an external monitor plugged in while i play games. Apparently there's 2 graphic cards in the laptop, an Intel HD4000 and a Nvidia GT630M. I don't know if this is possible, but I tried disabling the Inten HD4000 in device manager so the laptop would use the Nvidia card only. This gave me a problem, and now my laptop screen is totally dead, even after restarting the system several times. This happens with and without the external monitor.

Anyone who can help me?

Answer:Black screen on laptop

Hi, and welcome to TSF.

Try taking out the battery and replacing it, then reboot.

I would try rebooting and during the POST, hit F8 repeatedly to bring up the boot menu. Choose "Last known good configuration" from the boot menu and see what happens. Report back with the results.Oh, it might also be helpful to know what you were doing immediately before the BSOD. I was away from my computer for a couple of hours and when I came back, instead of my screen saver running, my screen was black. I started moving the mouse and nothing happened. I moved it for about ten minutes off and on and finally decided to shut down. When I pushed on the button to manually shut down, a screen came up asking if I wanted to switch users and it said "Linda locked" but when I clicked on my user icon, everything opened for me and is fine. Is this being caused by something in my settings?

I have a laptop that has power, but screen remains black. External display also remains black. I can't see if it's actually starting. Is there a way to attach it (or just it's HD) to a desktop to try to diagnose it?

Answer:Laptop has black screen

Hi, sdmur,
IMO, this will not be a problem with the hard drive, if there is no image on an external monitor i'm afraid it sounds more like the graphics card has died on the motherboard, have you tried shining a torch on the screen to see if there is any sign of post as your booting, asking as it might be backlight issue, but very doubtful though especially if nothing is showing on external monitor, as for hard drive if it is just a case of wanting to retrieve files then it is possible to to attach drive to another machine as slave,or you could buy an external HDD caddy that is compatible with your drive. As for the laptop it's either put into repair shop for a newboard or graphics card installed. Depending on age of machine it may be better to start looking at a replacement.

My vista laptop has been acting unusual for the past week.
Normally after it has goes to sleep, I touch any key and it wakes up.
But now when I touch a key, it wakes up, but the screen stays black. :-(

I can shine a flashlight and see that the icons are vaguely present.
There is a function key to switch the display from external to internal
or both. When I select that key, I will get a regular display for about 3 seconds.
Then I select that key again and same response.
After about 5 or so of these, the screen is normal (until next sleep).
I tried restoring to Jan 13, before the updates and it still has
the problem. I also ran chkdsk and no help.

And when I connect an external monitor, the external monitor only shows my
wallpaper, it has no icons.

Any ideas what this is?

Hey computer wizards, my Gateway laptop (Windows Vista) which isn't even a year old yet seems to have died. I was on it last night and it was running very slow and freezing so I had no choice but to force shut it by pressing the power button. BAD mistake but it was the only way. When I turned it back on the power button is lit, it first said something about a "fatal error" (sounds scary already) on a black screen and then I click repair and it says something about "crash dump" and contact technical support with a blue screen. Therefore, I pressed the power button again to see if that will make it return back to normal. Nope..now the monitor is completely black...as if it isn't on..but it is! cause the power button is lit. I am a complete computer idiot, so any hints on what I should do? did i blow the monitor fuse? do i have to get it to the geek squad? thanks.

is it bye bye computer time already? =(

it went black with a small white flashing line in the corner i did a return to factory settings and the black screen still there?

Answer:my laptop screen went black

If returning it to factory condition (factory restore) did not help, it probably is hardware related. If under warranty, return it for repair or replacement under that warranty. On a warrantied machine the MOST you want to do is a factory restore from the recovery partition or disk. If not under warranty, you may need to check internal connectors, your monitor, and other things, on a laptop you may want to let a pro do this. You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

I have a Compaq M2000 laptop using Windows XP Home, updated with all the updates, about 4 years old. I have a newer one, but I use this one quite a bit so I don't have to lug the bigger one around the house. I bought new memory, put it in and got a black screen. I took it out, put the old memory in and it worked for a few days. I was using it last night and got a black screen. I could faintly see the page I was on, I shut it off and could power up and only saw the black screen.

I hooked it up to a monitor, it starts to work, I get the Windows XP logo, then the monitor goes black.

Any ideas what to do? I would think the old memory is in okay, because it worked for a few days.

Thanks!

Nancy

Answer:Laptop with black screen

I just hit Function and F4 and was able to get the monitor to work. It works with the monitor plugged in. When I went to graphics properties, it shows the monitor as the primary, I changed it to the laptop and the laptop is still black. Evidently I have a problem with whatever controls the laptop screen. Not sure I want to invest much money in this, might just look for an everyday laptop to leave upstairs so I don't have to carry my work laptop up and down the steps.

Which drivers have you updated lately? Have you done a BIOS upgrade? What software have you installed lately? Has your hard drive failed? Have you run a Memtest to insure your RAM is not loose or failing. These are few of the things that can cause this problem. Have you plugged in to a external monitor What happens if you do?

Answer:Help: Black screen on my laptop!

Don't have a reliable answer for a quick solution. A great many Toshiba laptops have been having video output failures. Best choice, I would think would be to pay a good tech the $35 (average) cost to see if there is a tech reason.
Alternate solution to to connect an external monitor to the video graphics socket on the back of that Toshiba. If that works, you have a temporary solution. Then have an experienced tech take a look.
It could be something as simple as restoring the video graphics driver from a Toshiba download... Fairly easy to do that if you can use an external monitor to see what you are doi9ng as you download from the Toshiba site, then attempt to install it.
Then you have to figger out what it was you did that caused this failure. You need to know that for whatever fix you attempt.

When I turn on my computer, it boots up normally, (as in I see the XP Pro boot screen) but, when I get to the welcome screen, the screen goes black, but the my laptop is still on because I can still hear the sounds that are associated with the XP boot up. Right now, the only way I can solve this is by attaching my monitor that is hooked up to my desktop and attach that to my laptop and then pressing the "Fn" key and F8 at the same time. (I think that this changes where the screen is displayed).
How can I fix this anoying problem?

My Toshiba Satellite laptop screen goes black after loading windows. During the bootup process my screen works fine, but once it is loaded it goes completely black. Anyone have a solution for this? Thanks for any assistance you can give me.

Answer:Laptop Screen goes black

There are several possibilities for this but a little more info and a quick test first..
First it would be useful to know the model number of the Toshiba and the make of the graphics card.
Second, have you tried it in SAFE mode and does it work (I think it will).
Next, do you have a spare monitor that you can plug into the back? If so, does that work under normal Windows?
Have you updated any of the drivers recently - and that includes Video drivers both separately and as an updated driver with Microsoft updates??
