Question: Dell Inspiron 1545

Please help. I've got a Dell Inspiron 1545 with Windows 7 on it. Almost everytime I use it settings and things have been changed even though it stays locked in my office which is in my garage and noone but myself has a key. Also, I'm often redirected when online yet I've run McAfee, Advanced Systems Care 5 as well as Microsofts latest antimalware program and all that is ever found are cookies. I've attached a Hijackthis log in hopes that someone could help me with this. Please advise. Thank you.

Answer:Dell Inspiron 1545

Don't see anything alarming in the HiJackThis log.
I would attempt a test install with a new or borrowed hard drive, then making sure all Dell drivers are installed, and then run Windows update or Microsoft update a few times to be sure all updates are downloaded and installed.

Then if the problem remains the same, you ought to have a certified tech who knows Dell take a look at it. It it works properly with the test drive, you know what to do next.

Okay, I have replaced LCD, Inverter, and motherboard and the screen is still dim. Besides getting a new computer, what shall I do to narrow the problem down? It boots up fine, but can barely see the screen.

Answer:Another Inspiron 1545 Dim Screen

It would either be the graphics card or inverter. I would point the problem to the inverter.
Does the laptop have a graphics card that plugs in (not on the motherboard)?

I've had an Inspiron 1545 for almost 6 years so far. And during all this time I've been upgrading it, installing 8 GB RAM memory, 256 GB SSD, and Core 2 Duo T9600 CPU, I also updated BIOS to latest official version, A14. Last week a friend brought me a Core 2 Extreme QX9300 CPU, listed as compatible with my Inspiron's GM45 chipset and PGA478 socket. I installed it (of course applying thermal paste on it) and when I turned on the laptop, it didn't even get to the BIOS boot screen, just stayed there, on but not doing anything. After trying a couple of times, I thought it could just be not compatible with this machine. But then I tried once more, and it booted. I went to BIOS Setup and it was recognizing its 4 cores and specs. I booted my OS, used it for a while and everything was working fine, temperatures were ok, but then I tried turning the laptop off and on again, and it didn't boot. As I was using the 65W AC, and this laptop also supports a 90W AC, I thought that could help, so I got one of those but the result was the same: it turned on but no booted and randomly, when trying several times, it booted.
I've made a lot of research trying to find a similar case but I didn't find one. I'm confused because the laptop recognized the Quad Core CPU and I could use it without trouble once I got the machine to boot, so I guess that means the QX9300 is actually supported by my Inspiron. But I couldn't find out why I can't get it to boot... Read more

Answer:Inspiron 1545 CPU Upgrade

At the time your system was built, those QX9300 CPUs cost more than entire 1545 system - no one would have thought to test on in a 1545.  That said, since the problem is at startup when the power draw is high, it's most likely your system board's voltage regulators cannot supply the power demand of the Q CPU - it's 10W higher than anything your system was designed to handle.

When I plug the charger in and press the power button, I can hear the switching on noise it does, but there is nothing on the screen.  A few seconds after I turn it on I can hear two beeping sounds.

Please help

Answer:My Inspiron 1545 won't turn on

The system is not recognizing any memory.  Unplug the system, remove the battery and hold the power button for 30 seconds.  Remove and reinstall the memory module(s) and try again.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 notebook that came with a 500 RPM HDD (Toshiba or whatever), so I decided to replace it with a Verbatim 3SSD240 drive. All well and good, swapped the drives, re-installed Win7, humming along great until all of sudden, the SSD is not detected in the BIOS anymore. Tried re-seating the drive, etc, to no avail. Went back to the copy of Windows on the OEM drive. Verbatim shipped replacement drive, and I tried putting the ORIGINAL SSD back in, and it worked for a bit, so I got my data off. I've now put the REPLACEMENT SSD in the machine, reinstalled Win7, and have been using it for a few days, and now the BIOS can't see the other SSD either. I'm at my wit's end, any thoughts ?

I have an Inspiron 1545, running Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit. My machine can run 64 bit systems. I want to install Windows 10 Pro 64 bit. Has anyone done this and is it successful, or can anyone let me know if it will run Windows 10 Pro 64 bit. According to Dell my 1545 has not been tested for Windows 10 and they say they are not supplying drivers, or updates for drivers for my laptop. It is compatible by Dell to run Windows 7 64 bit, so I thought maybe the drivers for Windows 10 are the same as for Windows 7. Any advice much appreciated.

Answer:Inspiron 1545 and Windows 10 64 bit

Unfortunately, the Windows 7 drivers will  not work in Windows 10.

Hi, I have an Inspiron 1545, running vista home premium 32 bit. Can anyone tell me, I want to install windows 10 pro 64 bit. Dell does not support Inspiron 1545, drivers for windows 10, but supports Inspiron 1545 for windows7. Has anyone been successful in installing windows 10, 64 bit on a 1545 laptop?
Much appreciate any advice.

Answer:Inspiron 1545 & windows 10 64 bit

It'll work the 10130 Insider Preview Upgrade Path has Ended so you'll need to pay for a Windows 10 full license which may not be value for money on such an aged laptop.
You can however install Windows 10 without a Product Key to evaluate how well it runs before deciding whether to buy or not.

I have a new Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop, I was install some software when it turned off, when I tried to restart I got a error, that a device was inaccessible, so called dell they said it was a software compatibility problem and sent me windows 7 install disc, before trying the reinstall I turned on the laptop and when it gets to the dell logo it seems like its booting but right at the end of the blue bar filling up it shuts down completely, thought it may be the power cord so tried another, and some thing. I have tried to get to the windows repair but its off before I can do anything. I've tried just about everything I can think of hope you can help.

I am trying to help a friend out, so far to no avail. He told me he was in the middle of a windows upgrade download and turned the computer off. Now, it says "missing or corrupt mpfilter.sys, insert installation
disk." He bought the computer in 2009, and has no disks. I created a bootable usb with the ISO on
it. But cant get it to restore or recover. I am thinking my best bet is to get the computer to recover the backup from the hidden partition. I still cannot get into windows, I can get to the command prompt. Any way to restore to
factory settings from the command prompt? Thanks.

Question: Dell Inspiron 1545

Hi... Ok here's my problem that hopefully someone will know the answer to: I've got a dell Inspiron 1545, running windows 7. I ran the backup and recovery for the laptop and it said it succeeded. When windows goes to start, a blue screen flashes quickly and it just reboots again. When I run a diagnostics it gives me error code 2000-0146 with the hard drive. It wont let me start in safe mode or anything. Does this mean that the hard drive is just done?

Answer:Problem with Inspiron 1545

The 0146 refers to Hard Drive error.
You would need to replace the HDD. If you have any imp data, you could get an external caddy, connect this drive to another working machine and recover any data. Alternatively, use Linux without install environment and recover any possible data.
You could contact our team to get a quote for a HDD here -
I would personally suggest you to install an SSD if possible. Compatible SSD's for your system from Crucial -
Download the OS image if available here -
Also, please click my DELL-username and write me a private conversation with the service tag and your contact details(Name and Email) for case records.

Question: Dell Inspiron 1545

My daughter has a Dell Inspiron that had Wireless Internet at one time. One night she shut it down and went to start it the next day and it can't find a Network. We have 2 other laptops and a desktop that can find it just fine. We have done System Restore, spent hours on the phone with the cable/internet provider and with the router company. It won't even troubleshoot. I saw a similiar question about an HP and you guys fixed it. However, this did not seem to pertain to the Dell.

I asked this question on PCTechByte, or something like that, and the only response was from someone being smart, asking how many times I dropped it out the window, etc... I am hoping you can help before we have a pretty pink Dell paperweight!

Can the Intel  t6400 be  overclocked or is an upgrade to INTEL T9900 better for 2d Autocad in the Inspiron .

Answer:Inspiron 1545 CPU upgrade

No - and even an upgraded CPU likely won't help much, since the problem is more likely the GPU than the CPU.
This is a 7-8 year old system that wouldn't have been a good candidate for running AutoCAD even when it was new - let alone now.

I would start with tunning diagnostics on the hard drive by downloading the diagnostic tool for the hard drive brand and making a bootable disc.

I've had this start-up problem with my dell inspiron 1545 for quite some time now. I've tried every step provided in the dell tech support forums and nothing has worked due to the fact that a) my computer won't show the Advanced Boot Options or b) my laptop won't recognize the re-installation drive in the DVD drive. I've also done a memory diagnostic test just to see if my laptop would restart the system as it promised during the test, but the test freezes its process at 99% complete.

I am trying to determine if the HDD on a coworker's Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop (Service Tag # BV223K1) is failing or if there is some other problem. It came with Windows 7 and was upgraded to Windows 10 last summer with no problems. Last week, my friend said it was taking a long time to boot up and some programs were running slow.

He asked if I could reformat it and reinstall Windows 10. I tried to use DBAN to completely zero out the drive before the installation. It ran OK for a while and then really slowed down, showing it would take 296 hour to complete at one time. It finally reported failure and stopped at about 2% completion.

The HDD is a 500GB WD SATA drive. I was hoping to run WD's diagnostics utilities, but found out that they are no longer available as an ISO file for burning a bootable CD. Only Windows and DOS versions are available.

Is there any other free diagnostic utility someone could recommend that does not require launching Windows or DOS in order to use it?

Yes, we know this is an old model computer. My friend would still like to have it running for his young son to watch DVDs and downloaded videos, without asking to borrow dad's new notebook. He is willing to replace the HDD if we are sure that will fix the problem.

Answer:Testing HDD on Dell Inspiron 1545

If you haven't already checked it, these are the original specs for that Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop:
Intel Pentium T4400 2.20 GHz dual core processor
3 GB(2 GB + 1 GB) DDR2 RAM
Dell WD-ML160 250 GB hard drive

It appears that it was upgraded from Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit to Windows 10 Home 64-bit in September 2016.
It appears that the original hard drive was upgraded to a 500 GB one, but it's unknown if it was during that same period and if it was a new or used one.

Diagnosing a failing hard drive is beyond my knowledge, so I'll let someone else address that issue.
Good luck.

I have had my dell for approx 3 years now and the other day my sound suddenly stopped working (no sound from ear plugs either). I restarted the computer and it made no difference. I can't play any sounds (no sound when the comp turns on, no sound on itunes, "Itunes has detected a problem with your audio configuration,"Youtube etc etc you get the picture.

I found some solutions online but none of the settings seem to have changed when I attempted to change them. So I went into safe mode and the speaker icon on the bottom right hand corner has a cross on it indicating that there is no sound (there was nothing of the sort when i wasn't in safe mode) I looked for solutions online and went into Services > Windows Audio to press START and the following came up "Windows could not start the windows audio service on local computer error 1068: the dependency service or group failed to start."

I have also tried system restore, but am unable to do so and the following appears "No restore systems have been created on your computer's system disk."

Please someone help, thank you in advance

The first thing I would recommend would be go to dell's site and download the audio drivers for your machine

make sure to download the right one for your operating system (vista, 7 or xp)
install them and see if that fixes the issue

I have had this computer for almost 3 years now and have had no problems with the hardware before. I went to start my laptop earlier this week and it keeps loading without coming to my screen where I enter my password to go onto my desktop. It returns to an error message after trying to load with no success. The message says:

Windows failed to start.A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
Insert windows installation disk and restart.

Then it asks me to choose a mode: Safe mode, etc.

What's wrong with it and why am I getting this message?

Any help would be highly appreciated. Thanks!

My laptop screen has gone completely black. I opened my laptop to sign on and nothing. I can hear the computer starting up, but nothing ever comes up on the screen. What can I do to fix this? thanks!

Answer:Dell Laptop Inspiron 1545

I'm guessing what actually happened is the backlight in the display went out. So take a flashlight and kind of point it at the display, then look very closely at it to see if you can see the Windows screen there. It will be very faint, so take a few minutes.

If you that is the case, there's a chance that you can get away with just a new inverter board for the display, which would be great because it's cheap. Otherwise, you're looking at a new display panel.

Hi All,
I tried installing Windows 10 on my Dell Inspiron 1545 Laptop which is now running on Windows 7.  Unfortunately, it does not install.
When i contacted microsoft support, they told me that the drivers in system are causing the issue and you may not be able to upgrade it to windows 10.
Has anyone tried upgrading windows7 to windows 10  ? If so, can you please tell me which all drivers you had to install explicitly and where do i get the drivers from ?
Thanks in Advance.

Answer:Has anyone tried installing Windows 10 on Inspiron 1545 ?

Yes, I had mine on the Insiders program.  It never had a problem with Win 10 but I had replaced the original Wi-Fi/Bluetooth card..
It is back on Windows 7 now but still able to update to the latest.
You might try uninstalling the Bluetooth drivers and disable it in the Bios.  Sometimes Bluetooth drivers cannot be updated through an OS upgrade.

I have a fairly new Dell Inspirson 1545 and until now it was working fine. My wireless internet is now not working. It finds the network fine but then says that it cannot connect. Answer:Reinstall Win 7 on Dell Inspiron 1545

If your system’s hard drive is never formatted before and if your system has a “DELL factory Image”, then you can follow the below mentioned URL which will help you in restoring your system to factory settings without OS discs:

Using Dell Factory Image Restore permanently deletes all data on the hard drive and removes any programs or drivers installed after you received your computer. If possible, back up the data before using this option.

Hope this helps.

My Inspiron 1545 laptop screen no longer works properly. The display is extremely dim (just about impossible to see) so I figured I'd replace the backlight.

But I'm not sure what I should try to replace first - the backlight or the backlight inverter?

Anyone have a suggestion? I know the backlight inverter is much easier to replace, but is there any definitive way to tell which one is causing the problem?

I've had my computer just over a year and this is the second time my internal webcam has just stopped working. I have no idea what the tech guys did to fix it the first time, and I'm not under warranty anymore. When I go to device manager, it says everything is working properly. I've tried installing device updates from Dell's support website. Any other ideas?

Answer:Webcam Not Recognized - Inspiron 1545

Ah, those wonderful tech guys who fix your PC but never tell you how they did it - no surprises there.
Are you sure the webcam is actually listed in Device Manager at all?
If a device isn't listed it could mean it's actually faulty to the point where DM can't detect it.

Whatever, it won't do any harm to try re-installing it's driver, and you can download that from Dell's support website:

HelloI have foolishly spilt a small amount of water on my laptop keyboard. 5 or 6 keys on the integral keyboard do not work. However an external keyboard works fine. I thought that all I would need would be a new integral keyboard. Dell (eventualy after many calls!)claim I will need a very expensive new motherboard as it will be corroded and stop working. I explained that the external keyboard works fine but they were insistent that I buy a new motherboard.I am concerned that they are just trying to get me to buy a hugely expensive part I don't need or is it really true that the whole thing will stop working soon because of rust. I am tempted to just see what happens rather than pay hundreds for a new motherboard. Thanks

All right, so one day, my laptop was on, and I wanted to turn it off. I didn't feel like going to Start > Shut Down and waiting for everything to close, so I just held down the power button until it shut off. Just put that in here in case it's important.

Now, when I turn it on, it goes to the 'Windows has failed to start' screen. It gives me two options - 'Launch Startup Repair' and 'Start Windows Normally'.

If I try to launch Startup Repair, the screen turns black for a second and goes back to the 'Windows has failed to start' screen.
If I start Windows normally, it tries to boot and just ends up getting the 'Windows has failed to start' screen again.
If I try putting in a Windows 7 installation disk, the screen just flashes black and goes back to the 'Windows has failed to start' screen.

And if I press F8 as it starts, I get a screen that says 'Choose an operating system or tool.' I can only pick Windows 7, or Windows Memory Diagnostic. The diagnostic tool does a scan, but nothing comes up after it.

The screen also says 'To specify an advanced option for this choice, press F8.' However, that does nothing.

So, any ideas on how to fix this?

I've managed to get to the screen where I can choose to boot in Safe Mode or the last known good configuration. Problem is, when I try to boot in safe mode, I get a blue screen and then it restarts. Last known good configuration doesn't work, either.

But I can also get into the BIOS now, so maybe I can use that ... Read more

I believe the socket has finally broken.  The computer no longer sees that the power cord is plugged in and the battery is not charging.  The socket feels loose.  I have several other dell laptops in my laptop graveyard and am wondering what DC sockets off what other laptops would be compatible so that I can swap them out.  I have the hexagonal plug and cord and would rather keep that since I have 2 of those power supplies already and don't really want to replace them.

Answer:Inspiron 1545 broken DC socket

The jack on this model is part of a daughterboard that's unique to the 1545:
You can see if they have the hexagonal version, but there weren't many of those shipped relative to the number of systems built - the vast majority take the round barrel connector.

So my laptop's audio is too low for me to enjoy videos. I have my speakers at 100% and I can barely hear what people are saying. What are my options to get louder audio? Is there some software I can use? I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 and I'm running Windows 7. It does have what I think is a pcmcia expresscard slot. so is there hardware I can buy? Hello, just a quick question about laptop in title, I need to change it's faulty hard drive for a friend fortunately she believes in back up so no recovery needed

Is it OK to use any standard SATA 2.5 inch drive or have DELL used some silly proprietary firmware or interface like they have with things in the past?

Answer:Inspiron 1545 hard drive?

As far as im aware you can use any drive. Only thing you have to watch is where ghost partitions are used to restore to factory default instead of CD. If you replace the disk then you may not be able to restore it.

I'd appreciate any help with this please!
I have a dell 1545 laptop. Earlier today hubby turned it on and it said there was a virus and it was shutting down, and now I can't get it to do anything! When I turn it on the dell sign comes up with the F2 and F12 options but then it does nothing. I've tried running the system tests but it keeps getting stuck on the 'confidence test'. Any ideas please?

Answer:Dell inspiron 1545 won't boot, please help!

F2 anf F5 option may mean it is not booting from the proper drive.
maybe try the Bios and see if it is booting from CD drive or floppy drive.
If it says floppy disable it and make it start with CD.
At least I think it should be CD maybe someone can confirm or not.
Even though it does not have a floppy drive working on it sometimes it is marked as enabled in the Bios.

My kids both have Dell Inspiron 1545?s.

One of them started blue screening. I?ve reloaded windows 7 home premium from the recovery discs more times than I can care to mention.

The laptop specs are basically a stock Inspiron 1545, Intel Dual Core 2.3Ghz, 4GB RAM, 250MB hard drive.

I?ve exchanged RAM, tried a new hard drive and swapped in a new motherboard. After the MB swap, the problem got somewhat better but it is still there. I did use some thermal paste when I reset the heat sink in the mb swap.

So here is where I am at:

> New motherboard (all other internals were reused - CPU, heat sink, WAN card, keyboard, DVD drive, Express card, LCD panel)
> 2GB RAM ( this module is verified working in another computer)
> New hard drive
> Fresh Windows 7 Home Premium install

The computer usually will boot up into Windows. Basically the behavior has not changed noticeably since I've installed the MB, RAM, fresh OS, etc. After some arbitrary period of time or some basic activity, it will blue screen to this:

> A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
> The system encountered an uncorrectable hardware error
> If this is the first time you?ve seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
> Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask our hardware or software manufacture... Read more

You might try running the command below in an Admin Command Prompt.  Make note of where the report will be stored and then copy it to the desktop to check.  Close any applications you have open.  The test will run about a minute.
powercfg -energy

I'm really sorry if this is in the wrong section, I only just started on here. I've had my laptop for a few years, it's never really gave me much drama, but the other day it kept freezing after around 20 minutes, so I'd turn it off, start over and all was fine. I can't quite remember what happened, but I remember one time I noticed Chrome had messed up and deleted all my extensions, signed me out and changed my really cool theme which I was NOT happy about. I uninstalled Chrome and reinstalled, and it still didn't give my my extensions back, and was super slow letting me redownload them. I did a system restore thing, and that's when these problems started. Right now my laptop won't let me log in, it starts up fine but just before it gets to the bit where I choose the user, it goes black, and all I can see is the cursor. I've tried safe mode and it does the same, I've changed the battery too and I've tried startup repair. Please help, I will be SO eternally grateful.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 and I've had it since May, last year. Its been sent off back to Dell once for a hardrive replacment.

I've rang dell up and they made me run a test whilst I was on the phone to them. They told me by the results of the test that the problem was a software issue and not a hardware issue. Having found this out they put me through to the software department and they told me they were going to charge me something like 50 for them to fix it for me over the phone. Before I pay this I thought I'd post on here and see if you guys can fix it first.

Basically, when I turn my lap top on it comes to the screen where it says "Start windows normally" "Start in Safe mode" ect ect... When I click any of them, it just restarts my laptop and comes back to that very same screen. I have no recovery discs or anything like that.

Answer:Dell Inspiron 1545 not loading up

Dell computers ship with a hidden recovery partition that will let you return the notebook back to factory default. You access the recovery partition by pressing CTRL-F11 as the BIOS tests start up. In my experience, the timing is a little critical, so you may have to try this several times.

The restore will reformat the hard drive, so you will loose all your data unless it's backed up.

how can i downgrade my OS from vista to XP on inspiron 1545 dell laptop?

Hello and welcome to TSF, asikhan!

The only real way to do this (I think, I could be mistake) is to create a partition - install XP on that partition - and delete you're old partition with Vista AFTER copying and pasting all your important data from the Vista partition the new XP partition.

How do I create a partition?

Hi, I'm working on a Dell Inspiron 1545 for a client, who was having trouble getting past the vista log in screen. I attempted this myself and CANNOT get past the log in screen. So I plugged in my bootable usb and tried a variety of linux apps via Unetbootin. Everything I tried to run would freeze at the startup screen, slitaz also did the same thing when unpacking just suddenly froze. I've removed the memory and tested that. I've also tried to boot from the DELL vista home premium disk and it won't allow me to do that either even after changing boot options in bios. When I boot into safe mode I get stuck at

Loaded: /windows/system32/drivers/avgidseh.sys
please wait...
and it won't go any farther from there.

any help would be severely appreciated.

This isn't a problem of mine, but rather a friend's who asked me for help. She has a Dell Inspiron 1545 and has had nothing but problems with it since day one. Last time, she had to get her keyboard replaced; prior to this I had done a fresh install of 7, thinking it would correct the issue, so when she sent it to get the repair shop, it had nothing on it. When she got it back, a free trial of Norton was installed, along with some other software not relation to the keyboard. I went ahead and uninstalled this crap and replaced it with the software of my choice, and sent my friend happily on her way.

Today, two weeks later, she calls me up reporting of a beeping BIOS - which was one of the symptoms she had before having the keyboard replaced. I believe it's also saying that Windows didn't shut down properly and is having her choose which way to start up every time, in addition to a lot of freezing and scrolling issues. She said she checked for viruses and spyware, but nothing was found.

Besides the computer just being a plain piece of crap (sorry, I have a hatred for Dells), could it be that it just can't handle Windows 7? It's protocol for every new computer to have the newest OS on it, is it not? I know when my boyfriend purchased his current PC, it was WAAAAAAY under the minimum specifications to run Vista, yet still had it installed.

Any other suggestions or ideas would be helpful. Thanks

Briefly, have Inspiron 1545 with a known good battery (less than one year old). It is recognized by the computer, displays as healthy, and charges seemingly properly. The laptop does not utilize the battery though. Unplugging it immediately shuts it down, despite the healthy battery having 80%+ charge.
More detail: Have an old Inspiron 1545 in very good condition. Haven't used it in a little while, it was just put away with a partially charged battery, I was made to believe that was a good way to leave it.
Powered it on just today and just for kicks, I initially tried it without plugging it in to see if it still had a charge, which was silly because it had been weeks. Oddly, only the optical drive LED flickered. I was surprised it had power at all, so I plugged it in and came on just fine. I then noticed from the Battery Bar third party utility that it was showing 80% charge, which I thought was strange because the laptop had been sitting around and also because it had not come on.
Later I unplugged it, intending to move to another location in my house, and it instantly powered off. I thought this was odd, since it should have switched to battery, but I've tested several times now and while the battery is recognized, charging, and healthy according to Battery Bar, the computer does not use it.
It IS a third party battery.
Is this at all possible that this is due to fresh-installing Windows 10? I do believe (99% certain) that the battery functioned fine when this... Read more

Problem : Unit does not charge reliably. Green LED on transformer unit does
not light up each time it connected to mains and laptop.

The green light flashes on and off on the charger when connected to the mains and laptop.

When the cable is plugged onto the ac adapter, the green light should always come on, regardless whether it is plugged onto the laptop or not.

The fact that the green light does not come on without it being plugged onto the laptop, tells me that the charger has gone and needs to be replaced!

I took out the battery and left the ac adapter plugged in, but it still would not power on, so I know that the problem is not with the battery because the laptop would have started to work!

I also took out the battery and left it without the ac adapter plugged in, pressed and held the power button down for 20 seconds, so the RAM gets cleared to perform a hardware reset, but that did not work either and it still did not power up, so I am also assuming that the system board or motherboard needs to be replaced!

ok, so I know it's a long-shot that anyone out there has one, let alone has swapped out the RAM but I have an Inspiron 1545 (hey, it was cheap, wasnt even sure how much I'd use it), came with Win7x64 and 4gb RAM, my manual says 8gb max, nothing else does, everything else (crucial, dell upgrades, etc) says 4gb max.

Now, not sure I even really have a need for it but since I'll probably end up editing video from my camcorder on the laptop, maybe that would use it (plus, I figure GiMP probably likes as much RAM as it can get).

So, anyone know if it will take 8gb? I mean I suppose I could just order it and if it doesnt work, pay the restocking fee and return it. cant even imagine the desktop one could build these days.

(on a side note, we may be switching to Revit at work and if we do, I'm pushing for at least 12gb and quad core)

It does work in safe mode but obviously I can't continue there. I don't know if it has a virus but I do have AVG but when I run a full scan, it never completes in regular or safe mode. Does anyone have any ideas as to why I can't use the regular mode for more than a few minutes. Thanks, Debbie

Answer:Re: Dell Inspiron 1545 freezing

When in safe mode, go to start / run / and type in msconfig. Once that opens, go to your start up tab and uncheck all of it. Now reboot and try normal mode. If it works and you don't freeze up, go back into msconfig and re-enable two items at a time until the issue happens again. Trial and error.

You're gonna haev problems right away if you're trying to use a SP1 disc. Slipstream SP3 on there with nLite, as well as the SATA drivers for the computer, otherwise it won't recognize the HDD and you'll have to disable ACHI in the BIOS.

Technically, none - this model has built-in video, not a video card.  The ATI HD4330 is the better of the two options.

I have a Compaq Laptop and have gotten spoiled by the button just above the Touchpad that allows me to turn the Touchpad off. Now, I have this one and I really need to know how to disable this one. It is so close to the spacebar that my thumb just touches it and it jumps up to wherever the cursor is. Personally, I think that is a stupid design that allows it to move just by tapping the touchpad without hitting the left button. But I have learned the last few years that stupidity is something that Microsoft and Dell seem to be majoring in nowadays. After 3 Dells, this will be my last. And my next one with have XP and not Vista and W7. I have both of them and they are junk!!
WHEW! That felt good!! I just had to get that off my chest!! Thanks for any help on the disabling question. I would think that it should take just a push of a couple of buttons that the ones they have at the top row, where you can connect or disconnect from your wireless or you volume or mute. That would be a good idea to put a button for the touchpad up there as well, but I guess that Dell didn't think that was important!! SORRY!! Just venting. But, I must say and then close, Dell is not the company it was 10 years ago!!!

Answer:Disabling the Touchpad on my Inspiron 1545

Go to Control Panel
Find Mouse (might have to change to View by Small icons)
Click Mouse
In Mouse Properties Select Dell Touchpad
Click Big Arrow
Click Device Select (top left)
On the bottom of page tick: “Disable Touchpad / Pointing Stick when external USB mouse is present”
Hope this helps

Mod Edit:  Split from Hamluis.
I have a similar problem. My Dell Inspiron 1545, with Windows 7, during the boot up process, all I ever get is the option to either start normally or launch repair! Using F8 I can get various options, Start Normally, Safe Mode, Start from last known good configuration etc. Using these options (or the ones I understand) always brings me back to "start normally or launch repair". I have also tried CRTL+F11 at the Dell logo but nothing happens - apart from returning to "start normally etc. Where to now? If I can get a command prompt (and how to I do that), what command line would I type in to obtain the recovery/repair functions?
The computer was bought secondhand from ebay and did not come with any disks.

My Inspiron is running on the ac adaptor.  The battery icon contains the plug symbol which should mean that it is being charged, but the capacity is indicated as 4% - 'Plugged in not charging'. The battery is new, so presumably the last one was not at the end of its life!!
Any ideas? -thanks Bob Bottomley

I was using my laptop fine today until my Powerpoint session froze. It would not allow be to do a Ctrl+Alt+Del to end the task so I pressed the on/off button down for 5 seconds to reset. However, since doing that, the laptop will no longer start up. When I press the on/off button, I can hear the fan go on, and the "on" symbol is illuminated. The Dell logo appears with the word "Inspiron" below and a progress bar. In the bottom right hand corner it says "F2 Setup and F12 Boot Options". If I press neither of these, the screen goes blank after about a second and the fan shuts down. Please could someone help. If I press "F12 Boot Options" I get the options "Internal HDD", "CD/DVD/CD-RW Drive", "Onboard NIC", "BIOS Setup" and "Diagnostics. I don't want to progress any further as I don't want to make it worse. Please could someone help!

Is there a factory restore image download for an Inspiron 1545? Shipped with Windows 7 Home Premium? I know some Dell laptops have that.
The built in restore dell>dell software & utilities >Dell getting started guide DOES NOT WORK. Nothing in any of the Dell folders on the start menu works.
It will not launch or run. Lots of things don't work on it because the laptop's owner is one of those people who installs things to "fix" problems, but they actually horrible screw up Windows.
Windows installer is screwed up so I can't even uninstall the garbage to try and fix it. The laptop's owner has already copied off everything she wants to save so it's time to wipe it and start over. Preferably back to how it came from Dell.

Answer:Restore download for Inspiron 1545?

Windows 7 wasn't made available for download - you'll need to contact Dell to purchase  a set of recovery media.  That said, if it's never been touched, the 7 recovery partition is accessed by pressing F8 at powerup time (you may need to press it several times to get the menu to come up -- then choose the Recover option).

Hi everyone

I have various issues with a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop running Vista HP64Bit.

When you first turn it on, it beeps very fast and very loudly for a few seconds, so fast that you can?t count how many beeps there are.
After that it comes up with Windows Boot Manager and ask ?for an operating system to be selected to start or press F8 for an advanced choice?
Windows Vista is the only option that you can select, so you press return.
Then CHKDSK starts to run, but only for a few seconds and then automatically stops.
It says ?disk checking cannot continue?
After that it continues to boot into windows just fine and the laptop functions normally once you have logged in.
However it prompts you that the c: drive is corrupt and that a CHKDSK scan should be run.

I have tried to run it, but it says the drive cannot be scanned properly while in use.
?Do you wish to schedule a scan the next time windows starts? You say yes, you restart the machine but you get the same cycle. The beeps, the boot manager prompt and the failed chkdsk scan all before windows finally boots up ok.

So I opened a command prompt and typed chkdsk c: and I get all sorts of errors including ?segment ***** is in pardon? and something else like ?drive has damaged sectors," chkdsk cannot run in read only mode.

I have also tried to sfc/scannow command but that just reported more errors.

I have tried system restore, but that fails because it says the drive is corrupted.
I have run ... Read more

Your Hard drive could be failing. Download Drive Fitness and burn the ISO using Imgburn (how to burn and ISO image using Imgburn) burn at the lowest speed possible I recommend 4X. You would need to this with another pc if possible.

With the newly created CD boot with it making sure your CD-ROM drive is in the boot sequence, or press the button during your system name logo splash screen to bring up a boot menu then select your CD drive.

With Drive Fitness perform a short and long test. Let us know what the results are.

This 1545 just ran out of warranty and now it decides to give the "ac adapter unknown" and the battery won't charge.  The bios can't be flashed because it's not at 10%.  A quick search on google makes it clear this issue has happened to many.  Why has there been no recall for this issue?  I will not buy Dell, nor will I recommend Dell laptops to anyone, anymore.
Thank you for your time and attention in this matter.

Answer:Inspiron 1545 AC Adapter Not recognized

Recalls cover safety problems, which this is not.  Try a new Dell adapter first - if that doesn't fix it, the system needs an internal repair.  You may want to consider extending your warranty.
You may also just as well expand  your "I'll never" to include all notebook computers, portable electronics, cell phones, etc. that use external power supplies - because they CAN and DO fail - on everything.

Was gonna help a buddy fix his laptop, but I'm all out of ideas. It's a Dell Inspiron 1545. When it starts up, it shows the Dell Splash page with Boot Options and Setup.Afterwards, it loads up the Windows Error Recovery page, with the Launch Startup Repair and Launch Windows Normally options. When I try to Launch Windows Normally, it brings up the Windows loading screen with the progress bar, than eventually cuts out to a black screen. When I try to launch the repair, it cuts out to a black screen right after.I tried hitting F8 during startup, to get to the advanced boot options. Repair your computer cuts me out to a black screen after the windows loading page. When I try to start it in safe mode, after crcdisk.sys loads it freezes for like 30 seconds than restarts. (Idk if it's supposed to restart, but everything was still messed up after it restarted) Last known good config freezes after windows loads like most of the other stuff..I tried loading the Vista disk that came with the computer. Went into Boot Options and loaded the CD. The CD loading fine at first, but it ended in a command prompt, that I either didn't know what to do with or was useless. But. That's not what I'm used to reinstalling windows looking like. ><.At this point I'm just trying to erase everything and go back to factory settings, which I was gonna do with reinstalling Windows but I can't seem to get that to work. While trying all these options, the keys are e... Answer:My dell 1545 Inspiron won't start up

Were there any bluescreens / system crashes? Does the system overheat?
Disconnect the adapter and battery and press and hold the power button for 30 seconds to release any static power. Then try connecting with the adapter only / battery only.
Press and hold the fn key + power button to turn on the system and it should initiate the diagnostics - check for any possible beep codes.
Run the LCD bist - Turn off the system and press and hold the "D" key + power button to turn on the system and it should run the LCD built in self test - see this link for more info -
Download the service manual - - remove and reseat the memory modules / HDD and check if the system powers on.
Also, please click my DELL-username and write me a private conversation with the service tag and your Name for case records.

Basically I'm 19, I live on my own, and whilst I know the basics about laptops I aren't at all genius' like the lot of you. I've tried to read through some of the posts and find it really difficult so if anyone knows the answer to my problem please try to pretend you're talking to an alien and give it in simple terms.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 that is about a month out of warranty so Dell won't help. It came up with an error about two weeks ago saying Time And Date Clock Stopped or something very similar. I took it to a local technician who changed the clock battery or something like that. It was a tiny circle thing. It worked for a couple hours and then went dead and wouldn't do anything at all. Wouldn't turn on or light up or anything. They then said they had forgot to attach the switch that goes under the keyboard that it needs to turn back on so I went back and he reattached the clip, but still it doesn't work.

My friends baby crawled on top of the laptop when the lid was down and hey presto it worked again! Then a few days later the same happened and it just won't turn on. Could something be loose? Or is it just dead? My local technician says it might be the motherboard? I don't understand why it would work after a baby had sat on it, surely it means something clicked in to place?

I put the charger in and I know it works but the light on the laptop that should come on to say its charging stays off.... Read more

Question: OpenGL Support

Hey there I am having issued with opengl not working when I try to run Quake III or IV. I have a HP Pavilion XE743 which came with 98SE and I have since upgraded to 2000 (everything worked fine on 98). The problem occurs when I run the app. I get....

Working directory: C:\Program Files\Quake III Arena
fs_cdpath is write protected.
----- R_Init -----
Initializing OpenGL subsystem
...initializing QGL
...calling LoadLibrary( 'C:\WINNT\system32\opengl32.dll' ): failed
...shutting down QGL
...assuming '3dfxvgl' is a standalone driver
...initializing QGL
...calling LoadLibrary( 'C:\WINNT\system32\3dfxvgl.dll' ): failed
...shutting down QGL
----- CL_Shutdown -----
RE_Shutdown( 1 )
GLW_StartOpenGL() - could not load OpenGL subsystem

The PC comes with the Intel 810E chipset which I have upgraded the drivers from Intel to Ver. 6.7(latest). Also got the Intel App. accelerator to see if that might help. I have tried everything I can think of, I've uninstalled and reinstalled just about everything twice, I have downloaded OpenGL Renderer 3.1, I've gone to which is ID's support page and got the Quake III source code(under GPL) and tired to get the 1.32 point release (dead link) and even e-mailed support (e-mail was kicked back). Any help on this issue would very very very much be appreciated!

A touchpad is not the same thing as a touch screen. Your touch pad may not support gestures, it may just emulate a mouse.

I have been trying to activate the bluetooth capabilities of my Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop for several days now. No matter what I do I keep coming up with the same problem, which is that I cannot get a bluetooth icon in my system tray in order to turn it on. After much searching I found some info on the web which I thought might help. Basically, I downloaded the wireless bluetooth 365 module with the drivers from the Dell website. When trying to install these drivers, a window pops up telling me to switch on my bluetooth antenna. The Inspiron 1545 does not have an actual "switch", but pressing F2 will turn the wireless antenna on/off. I have switched this antenna on and off to no avail. The info I found said to just click cancel on this screen and go to a folder called Widcomm, which was installed from the file which contained the drivers. This folder has an application called BTTray, which is supposed to give me a bluetooth icon in the system tray. This does not appear however. Here is the site on which I found this info: Note that the info on that site is in regards to an Inspiron 1425, but I made sure to download the correct drivers for my Inspiron 1545 system with Windows 7 64 bit. Apparently I need to have the bluetooth icon appear in the system tray in order to activate it and finish the driver installation, but that does not happen. I have checked Task Manager and BTTray is l... Read more

I am having problems with the battery charging on a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop.
I bought this computer which had a charging issue. It only works on mains power the battery is not charging.
It was thought that the Charging jack board was faulty. This has now been replaced.
I am still having problems.
The mains adapter that came with the laptop was not original Dell.
I have replaced the adapter with an original Dell PA21. The end lead that plugs into the jack has a hexagonal end.
Does anyone know if this is the correct type for this model? Or should I have a round end type? Or does it make no difference?
I can only conclude that the problem lies in the adapter and/or the Dell battery that I think could be dead and may need replacing.
Thanks very much.

Answer:Dell inspiron 1545 charging adapter

Some systems were built with hexagonal connectors - if yours has one at the computer end, the adapter should fit it. If not, you need the round connector.
That said, if the AC adapter isn't recognized and you've already tried a new adapter and a new DC jack board, the problem is with the mainboard, not the battery.

Ive had my laptop for 2 years and never had a problem with the wireless before now but after moving to a new house it initially connected fine but now either wont recognise the network at all, connects but then disconnects after a few minutes, or recognises and still wont connect. It works fine with an ethernet cable so it cant be my router.

I am using a dell WPAN 1397 mini card, i've run the diagnostics on it and it is working fine and is fully updated. However, when the connection diagnostic for the wireless failed on the gateway IP ping test. How can i fix that?

Ive tried to have a look at similar posts other users have posted. Some say about checking the wireless adapter is on by pressing Fn + F2, this doesnt seem to do anything.

Im really stuck here so i'd appreciate any help, thank you.

Answer:Dell Inspiron 1545 won't connect wirelessly

I would really appreciate it if anyone could tell me how to solve this IP gateway problem, it is definitely not my wireless card or my router. (I found it was just F2 to switch it on and off) i can get a connection but the IP failure is stopping any sites loading.
