Dell OptiPlex 7020 on\off power pin assignments

Question: Dell OptiPlex 7020 on\off power pin assignments

So, my boss wants a remote power switch added to his Dell OptiPlex 7020 so he can pack it away in a cabinet but still be able to turn it on remotely, comfortably. I have no idea what the pin assignments are, pins look like this (box on side, front facing you, plug is in lower right corner of box):
Left to right top row first:
Yellow, Red, OrangeBlack, Blue, open * * * * *Any ideas that will not short me out? Thanks.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,
I have an Optiplex 7020 that is not powering ON.
When I press and release the power button, I don't see any light in the power button as well as the diagnostic indicators.
When I press and hold the power button, amber light flashes continuously in the power button with a faint sound (I am not able to decide whether it is a clicking sound or beeps). There is no pattern in the light as well as the sound. They just go on flashing continuously (two counts per second). The light and sound stop when I release the power button.
On pressing the BIST test button behind the PSU, all fans spin at their max and stops on release.
I have tried swapping/ moving RAM to different slots but that didn't make any difference.
I couldn't spot any blown capacitors on the motherboard.
I have tried replacing CMOS battery but that didn't make any difference.
I am having a tough time with this and not able to isolate the problem to one part. Please let me know if I am missing something and if you know what could actually be wrong with this PC. Your inputs are highly appreciated.
Thanks in advance

I've reviewed the Dell client statement (Dell Client Statement on Intel AMT Advisory (INTEL-SA-00075) showing the summary of systems affected by AMT vulnerabilities and proposed BIOS/Mebx firmware updates, but the Optiplex 7020 is missing from that list - we have a large number of these systems deployed, and every other modern Optiplex system is present on the list.  Was this omission in error?

Hello! I bought OptiPlex 7020 for gaming (since this is what i could afford) but the graphics card doesn't seem well suited for the purpose of gaming; so i was wondering if there are any Dell graphic cards available which can be compatible for games like World of Warcraft, and at the same time compatible for my device.
And if such cards are available, where in Egypt can i find your branches? Preferably in Cairo.
Thanks for reading!

I work at a technical college and we did test pilot rollout of Windows 10 Enterprise 64 bit on 30 machines.  The installations worked except for one Dell Optiplex 7020.  We have one user that has to push the power button at least 4-5 times before the pc will stay powered on.  The POST usually gets past the bios splash screen and starts loading Windows 10 but then the machine shuts off.  After the 4th or 5th time the machine will stay powered on?  This machine did have Windows 7 on and it was working fine.

We deployed Windows 10 using Microsoft SCCM 2016.

We use a master image at work to set up all our Dell computers. Worked on my first Optiplex 7020 today and after cloning the drive and running the initial Windows set up, both the USB keyboard and mouse ceased to work on the first boot into Windows. I could boot into safe mode and they worked fine, but rebooting into normal mode wouldn't change. I tried all the USB ports available, also tried a PS/2 mouse and keyboard.
I eventually downgraded the BIOS from A07 to A06, no difference. Then I downgraded from A06 to A05; voilà, keyboard and mouse are now working fine.
It could be a driver issue in our master image and something specific in the BIOS. Just posting this in case anyone else runs into a similar issue; downgrade the BIOS.

Answer:Optiplex 7020 BIOS A07/A06 causing USB issues

I am seeing the same issue on our PCs. I downloaded and installed the A08 bios version available Feb 2016... still seeing the USB issue.

I have an Optiplex 7020 that is a couple of months old.  I started with 4G of RAM but have installed another 8 for a total of 12.  During operation, the motherboard speaker beeps at random times.  (This was true both before and after I installed the extra RAM.) There seems to be no correlation with what I am doing, and sometimes the beeps occur when I am doing nothing at all.  They do seem to occur more often when I am running a CPU-intensive tasks.  They are generally single beeps but occasionally occur in pairs or threes.  I've run diagnostics several times on both RAM and my hard drive, both the BIOS diagnostics run by hitting F12 on boot-up and the diagnostics available at Dell.com.  Always they turn out fine.  I've also upgraded the BIOS to the most recent version.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

As per title really.  I have been able to log in using a PS2 keyboard and mouse, and the USB Root Hub driver is exclamation marked.I feel I need to provide some background information.  How I go about creating an image for a PC is basically building any new model fresh from the ground up.  Install Windows, install drivers, updates, and any relevent software that would go in a 'gold' image.  The PC is sysprepped, and that sysprepped hard disk is then imaged as a deployment image.  With the occasional workaround here and there pertaining to different models, this has worked just fine for us so far.  The sysprepped hard disk is imaged using clonezilla, then the image is distributed to our technicians for their portable hard drives.  This is a solution we have been using for years without too much headache until now.
We use this method of imaging because the images can be portable.  We have 85 sites over some fair distances, all of which means that bringing a PC back to HQ to be reimaged when required isn't particularly feasible.
On our 7020s, once we've cloned the image back onto the disk, when we get to the screen where it asks for our computer name (which woud be the asset tag of the PC in our case), I cannot move the mouse or type anything.  There is no indication of life from either peripheral or any life from my usb hard drive).I've tried creating a distribution share on the local drive and have the unattend.x... Dell Optiplex 780, Ultra Slim Desktop case. Refurb purchased from NewEgg last November. Son added a graphics card this spring. Worked a while, then he had power up problems. I pulled the hard drive and scanned it while connected to another computer as an external drive, expecting to find a virus. WebRoot had expired, did not bother to let me know. No virus found. Reinstalled the drive. No success at first. Later, he had it working. He cannot tell me exactly what he did. I had him pulling and reinstalling memory, drive cables, etc. to check for bad connections. Now, after working for a day, it will not power up. Got a copy of the Dell service manual. The pc has passed the power supply tests. We found a helpful video.

Power light: solid amber
Diagnostic lights: 2, 3, 4 are on

This is listed in the Dell service manual as a possible USB failure. No peripherals are connected (not even the keyboard). If a USB port craps out, will is stop the pc from booting?

I have a Dell Optiplex GX620 minitower that was working just fine until a couple of weeks ago, no problems at all. One day, however, it wouldn't power up; instead of the green power light, I got a blinking amber light. I tried unplugging everything from it and letting it sit for a bit, but it still won't power up, and it still gives me the blinking amber light.

I have checked the chassis intrusion switch, and I have replaced the motherboard. I've also verified that the power supply is functional. We did try unplugging the memory and video cards, and it still won't work. We also checked that all of the USB ports seem to be fine. We also tried a different power cord. None of the diagnostic lights come on at all.

Any more ideas?

Answer:Dell Optiplex GX620 won't power up

A blinking amber light on a Dell is almost always fixed by replacing the power supply. You said you verified yours was working but didn't say if you tried another. I would try another power supply.

A blinking amber power LED usually indicates a failed power supply, replace the power supply with a 'known' working unit, to see if this makes a difference.
Which version of the Optiplex 390 do you have, the Mini Tower, Desktop, or the Small form Factor?

My pc won't power on, this problem has been happening lately. If the power goes out in my house, I am unable to turn my pc back on. I have a solid orange light on my power button. Could it be a power supply problem? Can anyone help?

When the pc is on, it runs fine.

Answer:Dell Optiplex GX60 won't power on

The power outages in your house stresses the PC's power supply to the point of failure. Have the power supply in the PC replaced and invest in a good surge protection scheme, to protect the PC better next time

Connect to power and it does the power cycle repeatedly. Normally you have to wait a couple of seconds while the lights flash then you can press the on button. This just loops that cycle.
I've tried a different power supply, no change.Three times out of many after I pulled the CMOS battery, disconnected cables and pushed power button it booted and I reset the BIOS and made sure it wasn't set to power on with a reconnect to AC. I ran the full diagnostics tests including memory without a single fail. Yet on reboot. Fail.
Any help? I'm in the DR Congo so don't suggest taking it to my nearest service agent as I'm the go to person for a thousand kilometers in any direction.

Answer:Dell Optiplex 780 can't get past power up cycle

Hi Stillblue,
Check the power LED and diagnostic LEDs on the front of the chassis next to the power button . What is the colour of the power LED? Is it steady or blinking? Also, check which of the diagnostic LEDs are lit. These diagnostic LEDs are only active and visible during the POST process. Once the operating system starts to load, they turn off and are no longer visible.
You can also check the troubleshooting steps mentioned in the link below.

Answer:power supply over heated on a dell optiplex 740

Do you mean "heat sink" rather than "power supply"?
You didn't say which form factor 740 you have, mini-tower, desktop or small form, but go here and look at the motherboard diagram for whichever model you have to find the location of the fan connector on the board.
Make sure the PC is powered off, unplugged and you press/hold the power button for ~15 sec before you do anything inside the case.

Hey,Dear i have problem with my desktop dell optiplex 9020 the problem is when i tried to power on it is not powering on but i can see that the power button is still orange but it is not powering on.

Answer:Power issue with dell optiplex 9020

Hi ,
Thank you for writing to Dell Community Forum!
Here when the power button is  orange it indicates that the system is receiving power but not sufficient power to transmit it to the system's components.
However I would suggest you to try these steps and advise the result ,
*Disconnect the system from wall socket and press ,hold the power button where in we are releasing the static charge from the system ,then connect the system back to the wall socket and turn on the system .
*To confirm if the power supply unit is working fine would ask you to perform the power supply unit Built in self test where in behind the system where the power cord connects to the system you will be able to see a tiny black button with a green radial bulb next to it .When that button is pressed if the green light glows then power supply unit is working fine.
*Confirm the power button has a steady orange  light or blinking orange and also if you hear any beeps from the system .
Can you also provide your computer model ,service tag of the system (via private message) to perform model specific troubleshooting. Hope to hear from you soon.
Have a great day ahead !
Kindest Regards,

Hello, I recently purchased a Dell Optiplex GX620 Desktop pc in hopes of doing some upgrades on it. I am in need of a 400w Power Supply for this desktop, and I need some info on which ones are compatible. I have 4 gigs of RAM now, and a Nvidia Geforce 7200GS graphics card which requires a 400w power supply. If anyone could help me find a durable power supply, I would greatly appreciate it.

Power Supply -Typically, power supplies are a direct replacement for the original part. Please use the Service Tag Lookup feature in the Parts For Your Dell tool. This will allow us to identify your PC?s power limits and chassis requirements and make recommendations.Click to expand...

Unfortunately doesn't simply tell you the form factor of your power supply. You may ned to measure the size of the current power supply and post the dimensions here so someone can tall you what type to get.

Hi all, new here and not very technological so be gentle.
I have bought an old Optiplex 380 SFF to use for a homemade arcade cabinet project and need some wiring advice / help. Basically I want to add and illuminated arcade button to act as the power switch when the cabinet is built as the computer will be inside and not accessible.  As these computers do not have traditional headers / pins for the power switch I am stuck as how to achieve this. Looking at it I believe that the ribbon connector that connects the power audio USB front panel to the motherboard would be a good place to look, dell part number UM941. Ideally I would like to isolate the + and - for both the power switch and the power led within this ribbon. Does anyone have a wiring diagram for this part number? Or a pinout for the motherboard and the front panel? Motherboard part number is R64DJ and front panel is XW055
Thanks

When pressing the on button to turn on the computer, the numbers 3 4 appear above the power button along with a binging sound, or ringing sound and the computer does not boot up.
After waiting a while, I retired to boot the computer, the numbers then were 1 2 3 4 and the computer booted up just fine. I turned the computer off through the normal commands on the monitor and then attempted to turn the computer back on again. At this point the numbers 3 4 appeared and the computer would not turn on.
Any clue, suggestion would be appreciated.

Alright so normally I can fix any pc issue I come across but I have very little knowledge of AIO's
Client called me with a Optiplex 9010 All in one.
When plugged in the light next to power is green.
When you hit the power the power light goes blue and the  light above the power is white for 4 seconds.
Fan starts up for 1 second and nothing else happens. nothing on the screen at all  (normally)
sometimes when you push the power the fan starts for a second then dies then for the next few minutes it trys to start with fan going from 1 second then dead, fan for 2 seconds then dead, fan goes 10 seconds and then dead,  almost like a car engine not getting gas but trying to start up.
Whole time it does this the power light stays blue and the light next to the plug is green.

My guess is a bad capacitor on the mother board or a bad PSU.  This being a AIO I would have to order direct from dell or off ebay.  So would like some more info being putting another $100 into a brick

I need a better power supply so I can add a better video card. The power supply that comes with my SDT is really small and long and only 210W. They don't make official power supplies with more watts.

I've heard that the 1u server power supplies are the same size and should work with my SDT if it is ATX12V compliant. My question is will the power supply from a Dell PowerEdge 850 work in my Optiplex SDT? The part number for the PowerEdge's power supply is T3504.

Is there anything I need to take into account (connectors etc.)?

I'm new at this and would greatly appreciate any help.

Thanks,

Answer:Dell Optiplex 755 Desktop power supply replacement.

The tower on the left is easy to do,  the Desktop you need to shoehorn an aux power supply inside by removing the Optical drive.  For the SFF and USFF this is completely Impossible.  The other issue is that Full size video cards will not fit into that case so the point is moot.

Hallo!

As a total DELL-Lover I only have such Machines around.
I just wanted to build up a OP 760 for my little son.

When I plug the power cort, the diagnostic LEDs 2 3 4 keep flashing while the power LED is amber.
System has only orgiginal DELL components, no add-on cards.

I checked out two CPU types:
intel E8600 and E7300

Also, I tried without any CPU - then, the diagnostic lights for a missing CPU light up.

I would be so perfect if there would be any solution for this.

Anyone knows how to fix that?

My refurbished dell optiplex GX280 worked fine until a month or so ago when I moved it to another room in my home. When I powered up, the power light was blinking amber. I tried all of the options that did not require buying new parts du to financial reasons, so it's sat since then.

I just decided to look at it again and powered it on. Everything seemed to start OK but no dispay. The diagnostic lights indicated faulty memory. I then located and removed the faulty DIMMM, and it started right up.

About ten minutes later the computer shut off by itself back to the blinking amber power light.

Any info would be appreciated Thank you. :grinthumb

Thanks for this forum!  I am having trouble out of a number of Dell OptiPlex 9010 AIO machines that are deployed on my network.  They are all running either Windows 10 Enterprise version 1507 (original release of Windows 10) or Windows 10 Enterprise version 1607 (Anniversary edition).  All 64-bit OS.
The issue is that even though I have configured the systems not to ever go into a sleep state, they are still doing it and when they do, the only way to wake them back up is to hold the power button and recycle.
These are older systems, so I am considering replacing them but I'd like to know if anyone has encountered this issue under this config.  I have tried different BIOS revisions including the latest and have tried different combinations of drivers as well.
Thanks for any advice and If there is additional information that I can provide that would be helpful, please let me know and I will respond.

Answer:Dell OptiPlex 9010 AIO - Power Save/Sleep Issues

Reboot and immediately press F2 to open BIOS setup.
Enable USB Wake which is disabled by default. Be sure to save the change before exiting setup. That should allow mouse or keyboard to wake the PC from sleep.
And if you need even more control, go to the Power options screen in Windows, select the active power plan and change the settings for sleep and hibernation to Never, but set monitor and hard drive to turn off after a set time. And on the Advanced settings screen in the Power plan, turn Hybrid Sleep off and disable USB Selective Suspend.
And you may also have to go into Device Manager and expand the list under USB. Select each root hub and click its Power Management tab. On that screen uncheck the box "Allow PC to turn off....". Do that for all root hubs. Then expand list under Human Interface Devices and uncheck that same box for any entry that has a power management tab.

I turn off the power strip.3. switch on the power strip.4. the pc Auto start for 2 seconds, then turns off. (No video on the monitor)5. I turn on my pc by the key "power on" as usual, and everything is working normally.
I do not understand why when I give the current through the power strip, the computer will automatically start for only two seconds.
So I tried to reset the bios (CMOS), but has not changed anything.
I tried to format the computer and install Ubuntu = problem solved!I tried to format the computer and install "Another operating system" = problem solvedReformat and install windows 7 Professional = the problem is back!

Hi,
I have an old Optiplex GX240 that had its power supply break, I recently got another power supply from a different computer. The Power supply is working however there is an orange light on the motherboard and power button that doesn't flash. The ABCD lights on the back of the computer are also not lit.

Answer:Orange Light On Power Button and Motherboard - Dell Optiplex GX240

GX240 requires specific NON PFC power supply.  This unit is 16 years old now and has 512 meg ram of the PC133 variety.   A newer model like an optiplex GX620 or better is still viable.  This system is TOO OLD and TOO Slow to be of any use.

Hi,

I am new to this excellent forum and wondered if anyone out there could possibly help......

I have a Dell Optiplex GX620 Desktop PC. Several weeks ago I had a slow flashing amber power light, indicating a PSU or switch fault. Firstly I replaced the switch - made no difference. Then I replaced the PSU - The slow flsahing amber light has now changed to a blinking (very fast) GREEN light on the power button.

All of my research so far has suggested that this suggests the PC is in standby mode! But the PC isn't even switched on - no fans running etc. In desperation I have even plugged a USB mouse in to see if I can "wake" it up! I have a amber AUX_PWR light on the Motherboard which is on.

Nothing happens when I press the power button - no matter for how long I press it in!

Has anyone got any ideas?

Many Thanks in advance

Hello guys i hope someone can help me. My desktop stoped working and it showed me the amber power light.
First i cleaned the inside of the desktop from dust. I checked the battery it was fine ( 3V as indicated) then i checked rams. Also fine. Checked the video card also fine. Then i figured maybe it's the power supply. I jumped it and it worked the fan works and most of the outputs are fine. Then i tried to plug only the 24pin conector on the the mobo , it worked fine the fan kept spinning the HDD worked the cd-rom workd ..there was no stopping. But once i pluged the 4 pin atx mobo ps, every thing stoped again. I repeated the same thing 3 times. Once the 4 pin atx is pluged everything stops. What should i do. Is it the mobo ? Please help

I have a Dell OptiPlex GX280 mini-tower (smallest one thereis), and the original 160W power supply died a few months ago without warning. I ordered a new power supply, but accidentally ordered the wrong size (210W for one of the larger towers). I used it in the meantime until I could get the proper size (although the 210W supply wouldn’t fit in the mini case – I left it out of the case and ran the wires through the power plug hole). The computer booted up just fine with this 210W power supply. I finally got around to ordering the 160W smaller correct size, but that power supply would not boot up the computer (just got an amber flashing light). Thinking it was just faulty, I sent it back and requested a replacement. The replacement did not work either. I ordered a third replacement, and the third did not work either! So now I am back to using the 210W power supply (No. HP-U2106F3) which does not fit in the computer housing. I know these Dell OptiPlex machines are notorious for having power supply and capacitor issues. But the question is, why will the computer power on using the 210W power supply? I contacted Dell and they were of no help whatsoever. The guy told me that 160W wasn’t enough to power my machine and to order a 210W power supply correctly sized for my chassis. Gee, thanks! First of all, they don’t make 210W that fit in the mini towers, and second of all, why did it used to work just fine??? Oh, and no I have not upgraded anything (i.e., video card, etc.) which... Good evening!

I have countered recently the following problem.
I have an optiplex 960 Dt with E8500 chip, a Dell S2309W monitor and a Ati Radeon HD 3470 graphics card.
I plug the monitor to DVI-D and as the computer starts, before Windows open, the monitor goes on Power saving mode, although Windows still runs. All drivers are already installed.
With Onboard Card works fine and I have changes the saving Power setting.
However nothings happens.

Any help? Is there anything I should also adjust or set to?

Thanks in advance.

I have a Dell 7020 which we upgraded to Windows 10 that boots up and operates just fine but when you remote into the machine, it will display the error message "igfxEM Module Has Stopped Working" with the usual offers to find a solution on the Internet or stop the process. If I choose to find a solution on the Internet, nothing come back. If I choose to stop the process, it stops and the computer has no further problems. I have searched where I know to find a solution and ended up here. What information do you need further to help with this?

Machine : Dell 7020
OS : Win 7 Pro 64 Bit
I am having a bit of a challenge, I am trying to install  D-Link WIRELESS N 300 PCI Express DESKTOP ADAPTER in the above machines.
When I insert the card and try to install the drivers, I get a fuzzy screen after a windows start up.

I also get this as well

And this is just not happening to a single machine, I have tried different PCs same make, different cards but the same effect. I have followed the installation procedure to the letter but I still have the same problem.
But when I tried the card on another PC but it worked there. Has anyone ever experienced this before or can someone point me in the right direction in order to solve this problem
Any advice is highly appreciated

Answer:Wireless Adapter Failing to Work on Dell 7020

Greetings Islug!

Thanks for your question. I will assist.

First, I have a few question.

1. I assume you’re running the minitower version of the 7020. Correct?

2. If you’re running the minitower, have you tried popping the D-Link card into the x4 slot instead of the x1 slot? You may have the same problem there. I just want to know if this has been tried or not yet. The x4 is show below, outlined in white. The D-Link site says  " You can connect the Wireless N 300 PCI Express Desktop Adapter to any PCIe slot in your computer, whether it is an x1, x4, x8, or x16 slot."

Dell OptiPlex 9020 SFF
system won't show screen, power led is white, cpu fan revs, but not loudly.
Dell Support were friendly & helpful but didn't get me anywhere, so it's DIY :-).
Power supply test (button on PSU) runs OK when turned off and PSU led is green, so not a power supply problem.
Shutdown and remove power for 1min - no change.
Disconnect HDD, AMD graphics card & DVD & one (of 2) memory module- no change.
Remove both DIMM, pwr on - system beeps - good motherboard is alive :-)
Disconnect power, remove last Memory DIMM & swap for the other one & system boots into BIOS Menu (as there's no disks to boot from)
Pwr down, connect HDD - Pwr up -no screen, no boot. (After this you're back to a dead PC agian)
Long story short - ONLY if you change the DIMM & leave ONE DIMM by itself THEN will system start, but not if any disks are connected. (if you only have one DIMM use Slot2 which works)

I bought this a couple of years ago from a local computer store. It's been very reliable and I run Ubuntu 16.04 Linux on it. This afternoon I had a power drop of a second or so and since then when trying to boot the issue in the subject happens. I can get to boot as usual by pressing the power supply test button which gives me a green light on the power supply and then pressing the power button will let it boot normally. I don't have any version of Windows installed so it's not possible to run any diagnostic unless there are some Linux based ones.
Thanks for any help

Answer:Dell Optiplex 780 MiniTower, power light flashes amber diagnostic lights 1 & 3 flash

Blinking Amber power: Initial state of light at power up. Indicates system has power, but the POWER_GOOD signal is not yet active. If the Hard Drive light is off, it is probable that the power supply needs to be replaced. If the Hard Drive light on, it is probable that an onboard regulator or VRM has failed. Look at the diagnostic lights for further information.
1+3:  Memory modules are detected, but a memory configuration or compatibility error has occurred.
You could try resetting BIOS to see if you can clear the error.

Reboot and press F2 to open BIOS setup
Copy down all current BIOS settings
Power off, unplug
Press/hold power button for ~15 sec
Open case and remove motherboard battery
Press/hold power button for ~30 sec
Reseat RAM modules in their slots
Reinstall battery- good time for new CR2032 coin cell, if this one is old
Close case and reboot

If that helps, go back into BIOS setup, and confirm that all settings match what you wrote down. Be sure to save any changes before exiting setup.

My computer was working fine until the other day when the computer power button flashes and then the number 1 and 3 lights flash thereafter simultaneously. Although I've researched the diagnostic code error message on the Dell support documentation, I cannot determine what may be wrong. Does anyone have any ideas as to what may the problem be and how to correct it?
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I was planning on buying either a Dell Optiplex 780 SFF or an Dell Optiplex 980 SFF but I would like to know which one will work with Windows XP 64 Bit.

Answer:Will Windows XP 64 Bit work on a Dell Optiplex 780 SFF or Optiplex 980 SFF?

For Windows XP 64 Bit its best to use the somewhat hidden (old ftp website):
http://ftp.dell.com/Browse_For_Drivers/Desktops/Optiplex/OptiPlex%20780/
http://ftp.dell.com/Browse_For_Drivers/Desktops/Optiplex/OptiPlex%20790/
http://ftp.dell.com/Browse_For_Drivers/Desktops/Optiplex/OptiPlex%20980/
This has the old drivers listed of multiple versions including the XP x64 drivers not mentioned on Drivers and Downloads. The new ftp website is slightly broken at present.

The culprit seems to be the hardware acceleration enabled in the Intel HD driver. But, I have yet to find a way to disable it universally across the Windows 10 operating system.
For Office software =* Start any Office program* On the File tab, click Options* In the Options dialog box, click Advanced* In the list of available options, add a check to, "Disable hardware graphics acceleration"* Click OK
For all other software, you will need to check into their specific settings.

When the PC starts up, the dell loading screen begins. Normally this takes around a few seconds but this time it didn't end. We've tried all the diagnostic tests and they all came back fine. Also tried disconnecting all external cables (ie headphones, ethernet etc). Powered on and off multiple times and no change.
By the way, I don't know if this is related or not, but last night before the issue occurred, I was randomly logged out. Once it logged me back in, everything was closed and there was a small square of like TV static towards the bottom right corner. I restarted and it fixed the issue there but I don't know.
Thanks in advance, Sean

Hello, I own a Dell Optiplex 745, running Windows XP Professional 32-bit. The Dell System Direct isn't launching, even though it will download, it says .APPLICATION, which cannot be opened. Does anyone have a fix?

Answer:Dell Optiplex 745 - Windows XP Pro 32-bit Dell System direct issue.

The older versions of Dell System Detect are security risks - if you're running an antivirus program, it may be flagging and intercepting the program.  At any rate, you should NOT be using Windows XP online at this point, as it has seen no security updates in almost two years - you really need to upgrade to a supported version of Windows (at this point, that's a minimum of Windows 7).

My computer was down when I came back from lunch and could not get it to come back on.  If I hold the power button down for about 7 seconds it blinks orange but there is not noise from the fan coming on or post beep.  Also the green light on the back is not on either. All of the other equipment sharing the same power strip come on but not the desktop so it is not the power strip.  I also tried to set it up in another office on a completely different circuit and still does the same thing. What should I try next?

Answer:OptiPlex 790 Wont power on power light blinks amber

Which form factor, desktop, mini-tower, small form, ultra-small form?
From the (desktop) manual: Blinking amber light indicates a problem with the system board.
Are any of the 4 diagnostic LEDs on when it won't boot? ,They're on the front of the PC next to the power button. Look up error codes in the manual.
Possible power supply failure if the green light is off on the back. Can you try a different power cord? What happens if you push the power supply diagnostic button on back of PC next to that (green) power light?

I have an Optiplex 390 (actually 3 with similar behavior...).
PC would not power on. I did the power test and determine the Mobo was the issue.
I replaced the Mobo with a new one. Still can't power from front power button, but if I go at the back to the power supply 'power test button' and press on it the full PC comes on with all fans everything, but front power button is amber. And I get nothing on display, fans stay full speed. I can turn off, by pressing the from power button for a few seconds.
I tried using the CPU from another of the 3 PCs that had similar power issues and pointed to Mobo.
I reconnected all cables, tried different RAM modules, different video card, nothing makes a difference.
Not sure where to look now.

Answer:Optiplex 390 Amber power light, but all power looks good

Assuming that you replaced the motherboard then it likely is the power supply has had it you'll need to buy a new one.

Sounds like a faulty hard drive is the cause - F12 at powerup.  Boot to the Dell diagnostics and run an extended test (not just the quick test) on the hard drive -- you'll likely find it fails, in which case - replace the drive and reload.

Hello, is it just me or does anyone else find it extremely annoying that drive letter assignments can't be locked in disk management?

I have 4 ext. usb 3.0 drives in dual docks that are part of my backup box setup. Occasionally during boot up it appears that one or more drives get connected at different times and Winders just helps itself to reassigning letters, sometimes injecting them before internal "hanging off the bus" drives. This really screws up the works since I have a number of things pointing to these specific drives for various reason and they expect them to be there or things get ugly.

Is there any way to nail down drive assignments no matter what order they connect in so S: drive is always the same Disk x?

As far as I know if you assign the USB hard drives letters far outside the normal range of drive letters they will always get those letters when connected. For example, start at Z: for the external drives and work your way backwards.

Hello,I purchased an Optiplex 380 a couple of years ago which came with 2x2GB RAM @ 1066Mhz and now I think time has come to upgrade to at least 8GB. So, I tried a kingston value ram of 4gb @ 1333Mhz and unfortunately it beeped with 1 and 3 diagnostic LEDs lit. I know that the Dell manual says a maximum of 4GB ram but I have seen people here on dell forums running 2x4GB without any problems, so according to my thinking, maybe the bus frequency is the problem? shall I try 1066Mhz? Crucial's site also suggests up to 1600Mhz so whats the confusion here?P.S. I have latest BIOS A07 flashed.

Answer:Dell Optiplex 380 max RAM

Hi,
Thank you for reaching out.
Did you try 8GB(4+4) or Does it beeps even with a 4GB stick in one slot?
Try each stick on both the slots, If that fails, you may try 1066 mhz.
P.S:  We haven't tested 8GB configuration on this motherboard from the factory, If none of the steps works, You may have to revert back to 4GB.
Thanks.

Question: Dell Optiplex 780

I like my ten year old computer.  I've tossed the original 250G HD (and Windows too) in favor of a 1000G HD with Linux Mint 18.1.  It behaves perfectly and is quite fast.
I greatly appreciate the quality of the case.  Nice metal which is easy to open without a screwdriver.  But I have some questions.  I understand the maximum RAM is 8G.  Does anyone know if this is true because I want the maximum whatever it turns out to be.
I rescued this computer from recycling and bought a new monitor for it.  Why anyone would throw away such a nice computer is a mystery to me.  Sure the display output is analog but there are two unused PCI slots.  I can add a digital card with HDMI plug I think without using an external converter which requires it's own power source. This way I can use my smart TV as a monitor.  Do I need a wireless card?  If it were a laptop I'd say "yes" but since it will never be moved around why bother?   I will add a graphics card though to get a visual boost.  I have no need for a high end gaming machine.  I'm in my 70s and low end games are all I can manage.  Besides I do not care for the violence that most of them seem to thrive on.
If anyone can verify the max RAM I will be grateful.

Hi all,
I've got a Dell Optiplex desktop (DT) 755 at home which I'm in the process of converting into a PFSense router and firewall. I've got gigabit fibre coming in, and I'm noticing throttling at around 700mbit speeds, which I believe is down to the PCI bus.
Question is - can I use the PCI-E x16 in PCI-E x4 mode for a network adapter instead of a video card? Would an Intel EXPI9402PTG2L20 Intel Dual Port Gigabit PCI-e Network Card SFF fit the bill and what can I expect in terms of speed? Even PCI-E x1 would suit my purpose.
Any experience doing this would be helpful, I'm on latest bios version A21

Answer:Dell Optiplex 755 PCI-e

No you can only use the X16 slot with video cards.
if you put a NIC in you will be greeted with this.

HI all I came across a dell optiplex 780 mini tower last week for $50 with the q45 express chipset and the LGA 775 I'm am wanting to mod/upgrade it in anyway to make it perform better and look better.
also I need ideas for case mods for the same computer and any other mods that I can do to it.
I allready own a really nice gaming pc but would be nice if I could do a little gaming
Any input is helpful

Answer:Dell optiplex 780 mt

There's not much you can do with these as far as gaming goes - the power supplies are not going to handle demanding video card, and the chassis and mainboard are both proprietary.
It'll perform just about the way you expect a nearly decade-old system to perform -- if you want the best you can do within the limits of a decade-old processor, replace the hard drive with a solid state drive.

Question: Dell Optiplex 745

Which graphics card could i use in a Dell Optiplex 745 maybe a EVGA GTX 750 Ti? Or is there somethings different i could use?

Answer:Dell Optiplex 745

It depends on your case, the specific card and the power supply you have.  That card is overkill for a system that old and a CPU like the Core 2 in it.
You'll need the minitower case at minimum (forget about the smaller ones) and may need a new power supply if yours isn't up to powering the card -- or if the card requires a separate power tap, which your power supply will not have.

Question: Dell Optiplex 260

I have a dell that does not read the cd-rom. In bios it reads "cd-not installed. Does that mean adding text to a file? Look at photos

Answer:Dell Optiplex 260

It displays "cd-rom device NOT installed". So the drive is faulty or not connected properly.

Trying to fix this thing up for my grandaughter. It has a 200 mh. processor 128MB ram and a 40GB hard drive. Now it seems that the mb. drive controller is inop. At least that is what it says when I try to boot. I was told that it wouldn't support the 40 GB drive anyway so I bought a PCI ATA card. By the way I installed a 6GB. drive to see if the MB.would boot it,and it said the same thing. How can I get it to boot? It seems impossible because I need the PCI card to get to the drive and the system needs the driver for the PCI card to run the drive. Is there any chance???

Hi!. I got a not so new Dell optiplex 745 with a old Intel Pentium 4 530 @3.00Ghz with 1gb of sYstem RAM, a 80gb seagate hard drive, a 305w power supply And integrated intel gma 3000 graphics, my question is, Can i replace the old Pentium 4 that is 90nm with a Pentium e5500 or a Core 2 Duo e6750 that are 45nm? also, i will buy a geforce gt430 and a 2gb dual channel ddr2 memory. does the power supply support these three components? also is this a good computer or should i buy a motherboard and install everything from the start?

Answer:Help With Dell Optiplex 745

Minitower Optiplex 745:
Supported microprocessor types: Intel® Pentium® 4, Pentium® D, Celeron®, or Core™ processor
DDR2 RAM should be installed in matched pairs so you'd need to install 2 of them. But there's no point installing 4 GB of RAM with a 32-bit version of Windows which can only use ~3.0 - 3.5 GB of RAM. Note, this system supports 2 GB RAM modules but only those running at 533, 667 MHz. It doesn't support 2 GB modules running at 800 MHz, but apparently will support smallar modules running at 800 MHz.

Posted about this in the linux forum and software forum. My questions related to linux, operating systems and hardware... thus my multiple posts. Hopefully the mods don't get fussy with me. Just hoping to get answers.

I recently acquired 9 Dell Optiplex Gs+ computers. Anyone out there have experience with these things? Apparently they were being used as servers before being decomissioned. I've now acquired them and i'd like to hear from people who have used these before.

I'm posting about these in a number of areas because i've got a number of questions about them. I've already done the google thing and did research on them to see their specs, so i'm looking now to hear from those who have used these before or who may still be using them.

128mb ram max, simm edo
133 to 200 mhz intel processor (socket 7)
Hd space on these things are very small
They have built in 3com nics
Video type SVGA
Video chip set S3 Trio64V+ 86C765
Video memory 1 MB standard, upgradable to 2 MB

1) What are these units commonly used for? These particular units were in use by a local library, although i didn't learn what they were using them for.

2) What windows OS would run adequately on these boxes? I THINK they were running win NT but i'm not sure. How would win98 sport on these things? How would win NT server do?

3) Suggestions on what i could use these for in a network? I'm just looking for ideas... and no... giant paperweights or foot rests are not among the answers i'm loo... Read more

Question: Dell optiplex 780

I was looking at turning a older dell intel computer into a NAS and was wondering if it will support a 3 or 4tb hard drive. Emailed dell about  this, and they sent me this reply:
good day to you. The 780 would be having the same limitation in size that come with the storage format of NTFS. I checked on this unit and it appears that it does not support GPT.
So NTFS limits + amount of drives + amount of size for each drive.
Just need a bit of hepl classifying what  this computer can handle for storage?
