Dell 8700 USB 3.0 ports show "high speed"

Question: Dell 8700 USB 3.0 ports show "high speed"

Hello to the forum. This topic has been discussed in the past, but having read them all, I have not found a solution. All six of my USB 3.0 ports operate at "high speed" instead of "superspeed". My machine is Dell 8700-3312/ i7 4790/ Win 7 Pro 64b/ Board OKWVT8 AO3/ Intel PCH Z87 Chipset/ BIOS Version AO9. Per some of the "solutions" that I have read on this topic, I downloaded and installed latest Intel usb driver which is; Intel USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Control which did not correct the issue. In transferring data to and from various USB devices, my read/write speeds have averaged 50 MBps. Various USB3.0 flash drives averaged 40MBps. Three WD My Passports, all USB 3.0 devices, have gotten as high as 75-80 MBps. These speeds agree with the Device Manager information on the ports, and they all seem to be working at USB2.0 speeds. It makes me wonder if there is not an OS issue. On the aside, I have an HP Pavilion laptop with Win 7 home 64 with two USB3.0 which are also operating at "high speed". Could Win 7 (possibly with Microsoft's diddling updates) be a common denominator here. Hope someone has some insight on this issue.

EDIT: Rewritten for clarity
On Realtek ALC3861 Audio Driver (ver., A00) for Windows 10, there is no longer a button labeled "Show Meters" under Speakers/Headphones > Maxx Audio Pro in the bottom right corner (please see attached screenshot). This button in previous versions of the driver for Windows 7 opened a new window with sliders to balance front and back speakers in a surround sound setup.
What I did:
Updated my OS from 7 to 10 and updated the Realtek audio drivers accordingly - to the above mentioned version.
What I expected:
The "Show Meters" button would be present in the newest Realtek driver.
What really happened:
Upon upgrade to the newest driver, the "Show Meters" button disappeared.

I have reinstalled the newest driver multiple times with no avail and tried the driver from Windows 8.1 and the default driver from Realtek with worse affects (Dell Audio window is missing most elements/drop down options, etc)

If anyone would know how to address the issue, if this is intentional, or who to escalate this to, I would appreciate it.

Answer:Latest Version of Dell Audio is missing "Show Meters" button. (Windows 10, Dell XPS 8700)

I feel that I should be more observant. In Control Panel > Sound > Playback > Select the Realtek device > Properties > Levels there are the exact changes I need. I don't know why I didn't notice until now. Could explain why there was no "Show Meters" button in this release but I thought Windows 7 also had the same leveling and there was the leveling in Dell Audio as well.
I'm still going with a new sound card from Creative however, seen a super nice $70 one that looks awesome and seems to have features to match.

Back before I re-installed Windows 7, I would get this message whenever I plugged my Ipod in: "hi speed USB device attached to a non hi speed hub" and synching would take an absolute age. The funny thing though is that my PC is high speed USB capable. I ignored it for ages until I recently re-installed Windows. Voila! my problem was solved and when I plugged in my Ipod, all was good. I got no message and synching was as fast as it should be.

Until now.

I just plugged my Android phone in, and Windows said it couldn't find drivers for it, so I set it to automatically find them, which it did. As soon as it registered my phone, I got the dreaded "hi speed USB device attached to a non hi speed hub". Now when I plug my Ipod in, I'm getting that message again and synching has gone back to a snails pace. I went back and changed the "Automatically find drivers" back to the default setting it was on, but that has changed nothing.

What's up here, and how do I fix it? I'm using the same USB port the whole time and my PC is clearly capable of utilizing high speed, it just seems that plugging in my phone has done something to screw it all up. Any help would be MUCH appreciated as it will save me running off to work in the morning without my new podcasts cause synching is too slow.

Operating system is Windows 7 32bit. It doesn't seem to be a hardware problem, so I'll hold off on listing all of my specs unless something thinks i... Read more

Is this a custom build or a store bought PC? Have you tried updating the Chipset / USB drivers?

If that doesn't work try going to Device Manager and Uninstalling the USB drivers (Windows will automatically Re install)

Any way to speed up my extremely slow machine? Task Manager always has, for example, "System" at a high % of RAM, always in red zone, but I read online that that's okay, that it just means that what the system isn't working on is referred to as the RAM that isn't being used, but everything is so slow during every step of work, every little step is slow, resulting in too much frustration. If Task Manager has all the answers when it comes to where the RAM is going, is this high % of "System" process really okay? Any way to alleviate any issues? I already googled how to make the system faster which mainly resulted in my uninstalling a lot of unneeded programs but I still don't remember the computer being this slow before Windows 10, for example, even if that may be unrelated.

I had the post earlier of the laptop I found, a Dell XPS M1210, that would require a new OS installation. I had a disk for Windows XP Home Edition 2002 Service Pack 1, with the key number. I tried to boot it up and it said it couldn't because the version of XP on the laptop was newer. It said I could but would lose all data and programs, I figured that was OK. So I went and installed it, but "wireless" doesn't show up when you right click on Network connections. And to make things worse, I'm no longer able to connect to the internet through the Ethernet cable I had hooked up and was using previously. I figured maybe I did need a newer version of XP, so since I don't have an internet connection anymore, I burned the program Autopatcher 2007 to a disk and ran it on the laptop. But it still shows the same thing under Network Connections. And even though it was suppose to include service pack 2 or 3, on the laptop under system info it still says service pack 1. How do I get the wireless option on Windows XP? And I have a feeling the wireless reader I think Dell had on their computers, Intel wireless, I may have deleted with the new OS installation? Also, to boot the first version of XP, I had to change the boot order to go to disk first. It is still asking me this in a black screen but can't remember how t oswitch it to not go there first, if that will make a difference. I hope this makes sense and isn't too confusing. Hi all,

I'm puzzling this one. In the folder options when I choose 'view' the radio button to show the hidden files is missing. I've already checked the registry at the HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Explorer/Advanced/Hidden

and everything seems ok (value for 'Type' is 'group' etc.). Using the XP tweak (Kelly's corner #155) shows the hidden files, but the button still missing.

Another thing that I encountered with was that from the start menu the "Help and Support" not working. Again, the registry seems fine, and the process is activated (started). This came up when I tried to use system restore option - with no success.

Virus scan didn't find alerts of any kind

Answer:missing "show hidden files" button + "Help and Support" not working from start menu

Ok I found the answer (after quite a lot searching), as follows:

1. for the 'Hidden files' radio button - I used methods 1 and 2 from here-

2. for the helpcenter I just reinstalled it as described here -
note that the file 'dataspec.xml' is needed to be available for this, and it can't be done directly from the XP CD. The thing that worked for me was to insert the XP CD, and use the file that in my computer (C:\) and afterwards another file on the CD.

Again, all this happened with no virus detection, so I believe that there is no infection. However, if someone has remarks on the HiJackThis log I've put, feel free to add them.

Have a nice day,

The hard drive is a Western Digital 320 GB that I've had plugged into this computer before (and worked). Then i got a virus and had to do a recovery of windows.

Ever since then I can't get windows to recognize/show it in my computer. I just "disabled" and "enabled" it in device manager to no effect. I have a C, D, and E drive which are: two partitions on the hard drive, and then the CD drive (respectively).

So i'm stuck, not sure where to proceed since it's obviously not the hard drive itself, I use it on my xbox all the time. What next?

Answer:External Hard Drive doesn't show up in "my computer" but does in "device manager"

Does it show in Disk Management ? ?
Right clik My Manage...then Disk Management.
Find the drive...right clik it and select Properties.

Hi all

Ill cut to the chase.

What I am asking is someway of turning the Entire Windows Desktop/Screen "Black and White" not simply High Contrast.

I am one of those unfortunate ones, like many, that suffer from quite severe migraines from time to time. Couple this with frequent headaches, sometimes daily. This obviously isnt helped by the fact that my hobby and career are both in IT. I have tried every possible solution to alleviate the headaches. Lay off certain foods, make sure to have a balanced diet. Turn off any strong lighting around my computer screen, remove any strong colours from the desktop etc......

Windows XP / Vista have tried to address this issue with the accessibility wizard, where you can select the High Contrast Options to take any strong colours off the screen. Unfortunately this still doesnt get rid of everything.

When you make any major changes or "logoff" in XP/Vista, the screen fades to "black and white" for a short period. If you know what I am on about, thats the effect I am after.

More than likely a black and white layer is laid over the desktop to create this effect, unfortunately you would not be able to access anything underneath.

I need a fully functional XP machine in complete black and white.

On old CRT monitors you were able to remove the colour, making the screen B&W, but with alot of LCD screens this function is not available.

If anyone has any ideas, you would be helping so many people.

Recently, one of my service host processes in the task manager showed about 13% CPU usage on my i7. I manually restarted each service in its list and found my problems: Application Information refused to stop on its own, but User Profile Service, which takes Application Information down with it, solved my CPU drain. Yesterday, the windows services locked me out. When I tried to stop the problem services, I got "Error 1061: The service cannot accept control messages at this time." Fearing a virus, I tried to run Malwarebytes, but it gave me the same error message. I managed to run it in safe mode, but this did not solve the problem. I have an XPS 8700 with AX210 Speakers. The speakers are set up correctly as I can play music thru them fine. The problem I am having is an intermittent 1 or 2 second weird noise as if someone is drumming rapidly on a piece of wood. Then it stops, and may not occur again for quite some time. It is
low in volume compared to the music or the Windows sounds, but it is annoying as the dickens. It seems to occur more frequently when I am using the laser mouse, and I don't recall it ever occurring when the machine is sitting idle. Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this or what I can do to troubleshoot this? Thanks.

Hello all,

So, today I tried to install my brother's 3T seagate expansion hardrive..with no luck. I read to remove fast startup, so I restarted my computer and got a black screen telling me no bootable drive is found. I tried hitting F1 several times, to no avail, then tried the options given in F2 resetting boot setting does nothing..I have also tried F12 diagnostic and it finds nothing wrong. When I purchased this computer I wasn't given a boot CD and I really regret never making one now. Is there anything that can help me get my files back? as most of you will be aware with the show desktop feature in the windows, which in the system tray on bottom right of your screen.

I need a tweak or registry edit to make it do "Win + M" Minimize all Windows, instead of "Win + D" show desktop.

Reason is it hides my gadgets and docks, while Win + M keep those on the desktop and just minimizes the windows.

any help would be really appreciated.

Thanks, and sorry mods if i posted my first post in the wrong section. please move it to right section.

We used to have "stereo mix" option that enabled streaming audio recording without having to have the audio playing through the speakers. How do I do that now? What replaces that capability? Who makes my sound card? Why is that not readily available somewhere in Dell land? I can't believe forum searching found pretty much nothing on this.

Answer:Latitude E6530 Windows 10 no "stereo mix" option for sound input device, only "high definition audio device" with Microsoft driver and unknown manufacturer.

aj_chicagoWho makes my sound card?
Hello. The audio chip manufacturer was IDT.
aj_chicagoWhat replaces that capability?
IDT doesn't have "stereo mix", so I'm not sure how you used to have it on the E6530. IDT has an equivalent capability that it calls Rec.Playback. That can be found in the list of recording devices, after the IDT driver is installed.
aj_chicagoHow do I do that now?
Dell doesn't support audio on an E6530 that has had Win10 installed. The IDT company went out of the consumer audio business long before there was a Win10 OS, so there is no Win10 IDT driver for that model. Your computer is currently using the Windows native audio driver, which, as you say, does not support a stereo mix kind of feature.
You should be able to install the IDT driver for Win7 by installing with compatibility mode.
1. Download and save the audio driver to your desktop or any convenient location on the hard drive.  [There are two "formats" on the driver's page. Scroll down to the 2nd one, named "Hard Drive" format, and download that one, not the 1st one named "Windows Update Package".]2. Double click on the new folder to extract (unzip) the driver files.3. The extractor wizard will create a new folder for the driver files. It will be at "c:\dell\drivers\xxxxxx". Write down the exact location that the wizard creates. 4. If the driver begins to install automatically, halt (cancel) the installation.5. Browse to the dri... Read more

This week I'm at my in-laws -- and doing routing maintenance on their computers and wireless network -- which includes thorough bumper to bumper scanning of their computers for a variety of things. While doing so with their relatively new Dell laptop I encountered the infamous and incredibly annoying Browser Helper [??] that Dell, in a deal with Google, is installing on new computers.

This "feature" is incredibly annoying when ultimately encountered during the loading of a legit web page. It takes what is presumed to be a mis-typed URL or one that doesn't resolve in the DNS (domain name server) -- including from embedded ad banners -- and instead of returning a standard DNS error, it redirects the browser to a Dell web page with Google search box and a host of click-through adverts. My ISP's home page (which I was using to get to my web mail) was triggering this before the web page could completely load -- as were some web pages on Newegg before that.

Took me a while to sort out what it was as Spybot S&D, Adaware and Hijack This didn't find it (at the least I didn't recognize it in the Hijack This log). Turns out it's not that difficult to get rid of -- but Dell/Google don't make it plainly obvious.

Here's the fix:

Close Internet Explorer (important!)
Fire up the Control Panel
Go to "Add or Remove Programs"
Look for one of these programs (they've used several different program names):

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

Answer:XPS 8700 "Pop" Noise

POPS are usually failed components. You would need to determine what failed, and this is not easy. It could be anything, but a failure in the power supply would be the first thing to look at. If under warranty, contact Dell. If not, contact Dell Out of Warranty Service or take it to a local repair shop.

My office just upgraded, and I can no longer use Windows XP. On this system, I was able to add a separate taskbar to facilitate quick access to commonly-browsed folder locations on our vast network, and another one expedited the launching of useful programs and lists. Each task on each taskbar was represented with a big custom icon to save eye strain. I had them installed in opposite vertical margins, and they were set on auto-hide to keep them out of the way when not being used. Just move your mouse pointer to the left or right margin, and BAM! Sorry for the cliche, but I really got used to the convenience of what I had set up, and I just don't think I can be as efficient without anything comparable.

Now there appears to be nothing comparable in the Windows 7 GUI, and it's making me sick with rage! I see only the option to put a "toolbar" on an existing "taskbar", and no option to create any additional taskbars! This cramps up your one-and-only taskbar, plus the tiny toolbar access buttons require way too much precision for anything that's supposed to be quick. When you've figured out how to bring up that ridiculous button, the list that it yields is small enough to cause painful eyestrain - nothing efficient, much less cool about this at all! When our website users click on an html attachment embedded on a web-page in IE9, the download manager will not display the "Open" option. It will only display "Save" and "Cancel" which our users don't like, having to save the
html document in a folder to open it. Whereas, when downloading attachments like pdf, word etc. all three options are displayed.

Is there any setting to tweak , which will display all the 3 options for HTML attachments as well?

Answer:IE9 download manager will not display "Open" option (only "Save" and "Cancel" is displayed) for downloading HTML documents.

As you know, the Open-Save-Cancel dialog box helps you prevent your computer from affecting by virus while downloading.
So I suggest you test to reset all zones to a lower level temporarily and then please attempt to download this html attachment again.

However, since you can normally download the other documents, I suspect there is some restriction in the website which you are trying to view. I recommend you to contact the administrator of that website if possible.
could you please send me the link of the website from where you are trying to download the html attachment?

Have you had problems trying to disable your sound when printing on a Dell printer?

I recently installed Windows 7 and have a Dell printer (not sure if this happens with other printers) and every time I go to print it says "Now Printing" and at the end it says "Done Printing". I found this quite aggravating.

I did find a page on this website that had corrections for Vista, but not Windows 7, and the steps are a little different.

After trying to go into CONTROL PANEL and SOUNDS, I found that readjusting these settings did absolutely NOTHING to get rid of these announcements.

After some more of my own trouble-shooting, I figured out how to get rid of these announcements for a DELL printer:

1. Click on the Windows icon on the bottom left of your screen and scroll up to DEVICES AND PRINTERS and click on it.
2. Left click on your selected printer (will have green check mark) and scroll to PRINTING PREFERENCES and click on it.
3. A box will pop up. In the upper right hand corner, click on OPTIONS and scroll down to PRINTER STATUS OPTIONS and click on it.
4. Another box will pop up. Click on the circle to the left of 'Never Display the Printing Status' so that the circle becomes blue. Note: selecting this option will disable your printing announcements, but it will ALSO disable the box that pops up during printing that shows your ink levels and percentage of printing completed. If you want to continue to see this printing status box, you will have ... Read more

Answer:Windows 7: Disabling printer sound "Now Printing" and "Done Printing" for Dell

I only use HP printers and have never used Dell printers, so I'm not familiar with those "now printing/done printing" announcements.

I keep my printer set to notify me of the ink levels ONLY when something is printing.

That saves me from having to go into the printer toolbox to manually check the ink levels.

I just got a new top-of-the-line HP laptop and I think I made a big boo-boo by saying "Sure" when the sales rep asked if I wanted to pay a bit more for the "enhanced" screen. (He may have said "higher res" but I didn't notice at the time.)

It has a 15.4" screen with native resolution of 1920x1200.

The text is so darn small it's really not practical for a business application.

I can, of course, set it to lower res, but then I get the fuzzy text you get with any LCD that's not at native res.

The screen is wider than on most laptops; like a wide-screen LCD "TV" screen.

It seems to me this is made for watching videos, etc, NOT for business use!

The tech support guy at HP agrees. He says this laptop, by default, comes with a 1280x1024 screen, which is what I'd expect at the 15" diagonal range.

I realize that in reality it's about personal preference. I find it to be not cool.

Am I missing something, or am I right about this? Should get the 1280x1024, right?

Answer:Is 1920x1200 too high for 15" LCD for "business" use?

Hi All,

I have an Adaptec USB 2 Connect 4000 B in my PC and just realized that two of the ports are not recognized as high speed. I was running off of the windows default driver so I went and updated the driver and after all ports were "optimized" I thought the problem was solved. However, now the computer does not recognize anything that is plugged into the card. I can roll back to the windows default but was curious if anyone has any thoughts as to why only 2 ports would come up as high-speed.

Any help is appreciated.

Answer:Hi-Speed USB ports not registering as high speed

Some hardware have USB 2.0 and 1.1 backward compability un seperate USB ports. It can also come from the device you connect and also the USB card's speed compared to your PC.

Try rolling back to the Windows default settings. If nothing can be detected still, that can be a presence of hardware defect. Return and exchange.

Just roll back to a restore point before this happened. This usually happens when a user changes Services or installs software for managing Wireless connections, which stops Windows Wireless Zero Config.

Hello everyone. after my last "dell update" ive had some SERIOUS issues with the battery.. i can charge it to 100% shut down the screen lid, and its discharged next morning when i wake up.

i live in Denmark, and the warratny rules are propably different here in other countries, but here we can call the sales place, and open up a warranty case, here at dell it seems that we are FORCED to go through a lot of different steps before being able to open up a warranty case. isnt there any way to avoid all those "trouble shotting" with AI bots they have hired to filter out the customer's wanting to open up a warranty case

i have paid for premium support, but when i called the last night they wanted me to call back, but for whatever reason it was, i dont know
I now have a spacebar that is squeaky, a battery that is discharging, and a monitor that randomly starts blinking. oh yeah and if you have the dell sound software turned on and you try to dim the light on the monitor by using FN+ F11 or 12 you get a lot of statis noise in the speakers.

Pls can someone help me, and the regular warranty is about to run out in 17 days, and i want this resolved asap. I am afraid that dell might postpone this to make the warranty run out :(
im new to using Dell services and dell forum's but it seem like a very big job to open up a simple warranty case

I have a new Dell XPS9530 which has a software application that was installed by default called "True Color" which is normally in the task bar near the clock.
I ordered the official Dell OEM Windows 8.1 disk (red in color) and the XPS 9530 Driver CD (Gray in Color) and did a fresh install on my computer.  Neither disk contains the previously installed True Color application and I also don't see it on the downloads section on the Dell website.
Technical support was not familiar with this application so I didn't get very far - was just told to reinstall everything which I've already done.
Where is the True Color Application and why isn't it on the recovery disks since it was installed by default from the factory?

If I am logging in without setting password, and I am logging in network with "Public" profile, then will any other user, who can see my computer, be able to enter my computer and check the contents on my computer ?

Windows 7 Home Premium

I would provide a screenshot (or three) however that is at the crux of my problem - I should perhaps say my current, with "7" (I am beginning to tire RAPIDLY of 7, much more quickly than I did with either XP, or Vista).

PROBLEM: When I attempt to "Save As" a document (Notepad, for instance), or even a Paint image, I get a window/page/screen/whatever, that has no "Buttons" ... no button to "Save", no button to "Cancel". Simply NO BUTTONS???

I had this problem the other night, and we "faked" or cheated our way through it, by using the Enter (Return?) Key to advance the cursor (cursor??) to where we wanted to be (well, we "hoped" we were "there", anyway, since we could not "see" what button or drop-down dialog box was selected or highlighted).

It's almost as if I had a "Resolution" problem, whereby the resolution is set too low (say, 800 x 600), things are too big to be seen/won't FIT on the page. However, my resolution is set to the "Recommended" 1366 x 768.

Please help...this Netbook would be a WHOLE LOT easier to throw against a wall than my desktops ever were . . .

Thanks in advance,

Type dpi into the Search box and choose "Make text smaller or larger" at the top of the search result list. In the window that opens see what it is set to. You want it at 100% rather than 125% or 150%. So if higher than 100% change it back to 100%. Hit Apply. You will need to reboot. See if that helps.

Ok so I'm using a custom visual style made by another user however I don't really like the buttons used that I mentioned above. The creator states it is acceptable to change the theme to however you like as long as you don't redistribute it anywhere.

Ok so I opened up the .msstyles file (using Restorator) located in the theme folder of this VS. I went into the images directory and located what seems to be the images used for the buttons. Intuitively, it seems like it would make sense to replace those images with different ones (perhaps from another visual style) and it should change them. However, would this actually work? Could the theme get messed up in some other way (like proportions or something if the new button images are smaller)? I don't know of any other way to change them that would be easy.

But I did run into another problem. For some visual styles I can't even locate those buttons in the images directory. Where else would they be?

Answer:Changing the "minimize" "maximize" and "close" buttons of a theme

Use Windows Style Builder to do that...

Hi everyone!

Yesterday my HP laptop (Windows 7) started getting BSOD with various types of errors (mostly "STOP: 0x00000F4", "STOP: 0x0000007A", "c00021a" and one "missing %hs, c0000135"). Most of the time it restarts without any issues and works fine right after the BSOD and then an hour or two later I get a BSOD again.

I have tried restoring to Last Known Good Configuration, startup repair, hard disk check, virus scans and I also uninstalled any recently added programs I could think of and cleared up more than 50% of my hard disk space. None of these seem to have helped and I still get BSOD regularly.

I have attached the folder from the SF Diagnostic Tool and would appreciate any advice!

Hi all,

So I'm kind of stuck.. I currently have the problem where I am in an endless cycle of "loading files" -> "Windows Boot Manager" (see: How To Boot Into Safe Mode On Windows 8 (The Easy Way)).
I have tried to load all of the options -- and none successfully load.
I also end up at a OneKey Recovery as well.. unfortunately, the laptop does not have initial backup or user backup images.
I have a Windows 8 CD for repairing purposes.. however, I cannot load the BIOS/UEFI to change the boot order to load the optical drives first. I have also tried to remove the CMOS battery to fix it.. did not work. .
Also - Windows Boot Manager:
Windows Setup [EMS Enabled] -- does not load properly (leads to OneKey Recovery) Safe Mode (does not load properly) Safe Mode with Networking (does not load properly) Safe Mode with Command Prompt (doesn't load - tries to boot and load all files onto partition that is too small.. can't change partition?)

Hey there...I found a folder that I've never seen in my D partition before...I partition my hdd into 3 parts...C=OS installation...D=Programs and Games...E=Misc downloads and music and pr0n ...

Well I've never had a virus or anything in my D partition before...I just found this folder named "winnt" and it had some bat files and some kind of Airline JScript and something that looks like an airplane tracker...

Then in a folder named sdata (still in the winnt folder) there's files like 911, police, air, fire, etc...OMFG!!! This is like some terrorist thing or something...FBI is gonna find me and I'll never see the light of day again!!! I'll miss the [H] and I haven't even watched LOTR Extended Platinum Collectors DVD thing (the big ass package with those book holder things)...I haven't even completed Doom 3 or started playing HL2 or even had a chance to buy an X-Box and play Halo 2!!!

Hello guys, the last week I've been strugling with these nasty BSODs. At first I thought it was my HDDs as ntoskrn.exe somewhat hinted towards that from googling it. My HDDs have been causing a lot of trouble earlier as well due to their somewhat long years of service. However, I've recently reformated my computer and installed W7 on a brand new Corsair Force GT 120GB SSD hoping the BSODs would go away, they didn't.

I googled BSOD and I stumbled upon this forum and I thought I'd give it a try. I'm somewhat desperate, as I need my computer working for both work, school and amusement.

I've been trying to run Memtest in order to test my memory but without any results. I'm also currently running on only on 4GB chip instead of two, to see if the problem still exists. Also, without any results.

This is the second time I'm writing this thread btw, I was just about to post it and my PC crashed.

Here is my two logs + dxdiag (last crash didn't generate a log oddly enough).

Here is additional hardware/gear that I use:

Razer Megalodon 7.1 Headset
Razer Naga
Logitech G19
Logitech C920 (Webcam)
Corsair 750W PSU

My temperatures are also good. Both CPU and MB idles at around ~25. GPU's all good too. I'm also using a Corsair 650D chassi with dustfilters at both air-income so dust is minimal. On top off this, I use airpressure to clean away dust somewhat regularly and I also did exactly this 2 days ago when I reinstalled the pc.

My keyboard, wireless mouse that runs through the keyboard's USB ports and the external HDD remains functional UNTIL I pull the plug on them, after that plugging them back in does nothing.

I put randomly in quotations because it seems to fail more often when I download something at speeds over 3Mb/s, for an example downloading Hearthstone through the Battle.Net client will more often than not make the issue happen after a little bit. BUT it still happens randomly during NO network load what-so-ever.

All of my USB Ports just stopped working. When I go to the device manager and check them I get the code 19 error:

Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged.

I wasn't even in the registry and I have no idea how to restore the old settings that are apparently damaged.

I check microsoft and they said this:

A registry problem was detected.

This can occur when more than one service is defined for a device, if there is a failure opening the service subkey, or if the driver name cannot be obtained from the service subkey. Try these options:

On the General Properties tab of the device, click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooting wizard.

Click Uninstall, and then click Scan for hardware changes to load a usable driver.

Restart the computer in Safe Mode, and then select Last Known Good Configuration, which rolls back to the most recent successful registry configuration.
I did all those things and they still do not work. I think it is likely that I'll have to manual restore the registry valves for each USB port - but I have no idea how.

Any help would be very much appreciated. I am having a horrible night. Please someone show me how to fix this in the registry. I do not have system restore running so I can't use that. I hope no one ever has luck like this...

Here's one for you. Running Win7Pro x64. I have a cheap USB sound card (7.1 channel sound), which works fine.

It works with any other computer, and works with my laptop *UNLESS* it's plugged into particular USB ports on my hub. These two particular USB ports once upon a time fed a different audio device (a Numark C3USB mixer with two integrated sound playback devices). These integrated devices appeared as stereo only sound devices (and they were). They worked fine.

Now, if you plug the cheap USB sound card into any other port, Windows can play its test tone in stereo fine, or in 7.1 fine.

If you plug the cheap USB sound card into one of these "poisoned" ports, Windows can STILL play its test tone in stereo fine, but trying to play the 7.1 test tone results in the Windows popup "Failed to Play Test Tone".

I've tried uninstalling the driver repeatedly, but somehow Windows just won't accept the 7.1 device on those two ports.

Well, zonealarm has completely crapped out on me. If I try to load a backup of all my settings, my computer reboots. Not shuts down and restarts but, one moment I'm watching the status window, the next I'm watching the memory test. Even if I try to do it all the hard way (and believe me, I had a LOT of settings) it just doesn't work right. Later on I'll try to figure out just what the heck is going on, but, for now, I've turned off the static nat on my modem and enabled the windows firewall (yeah, lack of trust thing.) Well, on the modem I have no trouble routing multiple ports with one "service" but, the xp firewall expects you to manually enter each and every one one at a time. I notice, however, that, of the built in stuff, there is one or two that calls itself a "service." One of these being File and Print Sharing. These services have multiple ports defined, saving one quite a bit of work potentially. However, I note that there is an add program and add port button, but, NOTHING to allow you to add a "service." In fact, the add port option does not allow you specify multiple ports, much less a range.

I know I can use the add program option. However, there are multiple issues with this. One of which being that if it has some kind of check (CRC or whatever) then the fact that I update relatively often and switch what I use for particular stuff often as well would make this a huge pain. If it doesn... Read more

Answer:XP SP2 Firewall - any way to add a "service" (multiple ports in one thing)?

Try this .
To open ports 1900 and 2869

Open Control Panel, and then click SecurityCenter.

Click Windows Firewall.
The Windows Firewall dialog box appears.

Click the General tab, and ensure that the On (recommended) option is selected. If the Don’t allow exceptions check box is selected, clear it.

If both the On (recommended) option and the Don’t allow exceptions check box are selected, the UPnP ports will remain closed even if you complete the rest of the steps in this procedure.

Click the Exceptions tab.

Select the UPnP check box. By default, this sets up both ports to accept messages from your local subnet only.

To change the defaults (for example, to receive messages from all IP addresses), select the UPnP item you want to change, and then click Edit.

When you complete the firewall configuration, click OK,and the new settings will take effect.

Is there a way to force Task Manager to open with the "Show processes from all users" option enabled?

I created a shortcut and added "/1" (without quotes) in the property target line but it did not work. (I know, one click will accomplish this but I just like to tweak!)

Found Brink's post of 05-18-2009 on same subject. Followed his directions and worked like a charm.

Thanks Brink !

Answer:Force Task Manager "Show processes from all users" always enabled.

Hello Manuel,

In addition, you could use the shortcut below to have this. The "Show processes from all users" option just runs Task Manager as elevated (Run as administrator).

I upgraded to the CP a few days ago and just noticed a huge problem. The "Show Desktop" tile that is normally on the start screen be default has gone missing. I can't figure out how I got rid of it in the first place, but is there some way to add it back?

EDIT: I have changed the title to more accurately reflect the problem. A bunch of the features that come with Windows 8 CP (the tablet friendly Settings page, Remote Desktop, the show desktop tile, The Windows Store, etc) all vanished shortly after I installed Windows 8. I tried reinstalling and the same thing happened again. If anyone else is having this issue, let me know.

Answer:Can't find "show desktop" tile on Metro start screen

Go to the start screen and just type Desktop. The first screen shown below should appear with the Desktop listed. Right click on the desktop icon and re-pin it to your start screen using the option at the bottom of the screen. Below it shows only 'unpin' as I have not deleted the desktop icon from my own Start page.

I just brought a Satellite P50-B PSPNUA-02N00R about 2 weeks (late Aug 2015) ago from DS in Sydney online. It is not booting at all now- it shows:

"Reboot and select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and Press a Key"

What should I do? I press "0" and then power on, it does not take me to the recovery either. I am offsite in the country and won't be back to Sydney until end of the month and also need this laptop for work! Please help!

This was after the screen kept flicker and won't let me clicked on icons. It appeared like the Norton software is fighting with Windows security. After that I can boot any more! P;ease help!

Screenshots are a very handy way to show someone what you can see on your display, but on their own, they only tell part of the story. When you share that screenshot, the chances are you'll still have to explain its relevance - but Microsoft is aiming to streamline this whole process with a new tool from its Office team.

Microsoft Snip is available now as a beta release - and given that this is preview software, you should expect to encounter bugs and issues with it along the way.

Source: Microsoft Snip via The Verge

Answer:Microsoft launches Snip for Windows, turning screenshots into "show-and-tell"

Snip (Preview) is inspired by the theme of current Windows 10. I am running on Windows 8.1, the default actions are to run on start, and replace the PrintScreen function. It does not affect Alt+PrtScr.

The toolbar sits at the top center of the screen, and drops down with a mouse hover. You can Take a Snip, Open Whiteboard, or Camera, with a smaller icon to access the Library.

There is also an icon in the system tray, with similar options and an Exit. As shown below, I used the Print Screen button which allows for an snip of the screen, with window-detection. A zoomed bubble appears for better accuracy, as such:

Right-click from system tray

Settings for Microsoft Snip (Preview).
New Whiteboard

Toggle the title commands on/off using [...].

Capture of Firefox using window-detection.
New Photo

Select an attached webcam to take a screen capture.

This appeared after closing the New Photo, as my webcam is disabled.

No noticeable drag on performance.

Microsoft Snip is still Preview/BETA.

Okay, so I recently moved to try and get a more simple look on one of my laptops. I have found that I like using the Soft7 2.0 theme with Token icons. But what I have noticed is that my clock no long matches. I'm wanting to know how do I change my clock color to something that matches and is a little more easy to read. Like black.

Also, I would like to get rid of that awful "Show Desktop" button in the bottom right. I have tried the tool from Kishan but it doesn't stay. When I click on anything involving the notification tray, it just pops back up. Does anyone have a fix for this?

I presume you are on WP 8.1 now right? If you are then you should know that a lot of users have had issues with this. It works for some and it doesn't for others. Kind of hit and miss. MS is working on it.. Some have said that by manually adding the necessary tags via windows media player the xbox music app on the phone will recognize it and this will help with getting the artist on lockscreen.. Or you could buy your songs via the xbox music store, since those are definitely "legal" the album art etc should show up on screen

Hi all,

First off, I'm a sys-admin for a DoD testing lab. Our computers are hardened/locked down pretty well, and some things just don't work like they used to.

We are in a closed netowrk environment, and there is a WSUS server off-site that provides our updates.

Some of our computers, the later ones I've had to harden recently, don't show the "WSUS Shield" All they show is the "Install updates and shut down" option. Just to be clear though, my windows updates DO work, just don't get the update shield on the taskbar.

I'm 99% certian it's my fault. The only computers that do this are ones I've hardened lately, which means there's a change to my procedures (registry, group policy or security policy) that makes this happen. The problem is, I can't find WHAT I'm doing wrong.

Can anyone shed some light onto my issue? Thanks!

Answer:WSUS shield doesn't show, but "install updates and shut down" does

I believe there's a GPO option to "not install updates for users logged in"

That may be set to active.

When I do that another box opens and shows me a list (2) of USB ports, the second being USB root hub with 10 ports. How do I configure to use the high speed root hub? Thanks in advance, Regards, James.

Answer:High Speed Usb Ports

Whether a USB port is version 1 or 2 depends on the hardware--in other words it's one or the other.
If right click on My Computer, click Manage, select Device Manager from the left pane and select USB Controllers from the right pane and look for something that says "enhanced". That will indicate that you have a USB2.0 controller. Then it's just a matter of actually plugging your devices into the ports connected to that controller.
