No Sound

Question: No Sound

I can not get any sound from watching a video. I have run several tests to check my computer and it's components and all are up to date. I have the volume set to 100 %. I have done various things different places tell me to do and still no sound. From one test I did get some information that my speakers are not plugged in, but they are. One cord is plugged into the computer in the round, green hole. The other is plugged in to the back of the computer where things get plugged in at. I'm getting information that everything is working correctly but still no sound. What's wrong? Could the external speakers just need replacing? I have esperion 660 with Windows 10.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: No Sound

Have you tried different sources? Such as playing a video online and playing a DVD video or one that is on your hard drive?
Have you tried playing audio files and checked if the audio works? Have you tried a different set of speakers or headsets? Just to be sure, you are using the green port to connect the speakers i.e., if the speakers have the 3.5mm jack. Or are you using USB speakers? In which case, have you tried a different USB port?
Have you updated the drivers? Latest drivers are at Update the latest BIOS from Installation instructions are at

Cheers all,

Problem is as stated in the thread; I downloaded, untar'd and set the theme up today. I know it's specifically the "Close Window" sound since it's unique from the others. I'm referring to the following actions in particular (there may be more things I could do to proc it, but I haven't checked yet)...
Opening a Program
Opening a Folder in Windows Explorer
Starting a new Windows Explorer Session
Closing a Window (expected function)
Closing a Windows Explorer Session (expected function)
Those not followed by (expected function) have a different sound assigned to them, although the Close Window sound plays anyways. Not always immediately after the action is performed, either - there can be anywhere from a 1 to 15 second delay before the .wav plays.

The sounds are located in C:\Windows\Media\AltimitOS\ with AltimitOS being a custom folder I copied in. I originally untar'd everything to the desktop, then created and moved everything into the folder and tried running the theme from there. I've made sure all file paths are leading to the \Media\AltimitOS folder.

Any help is appreciated. Cheers,

Answer:Custom Sound Scheme: Close Window Sound Plays Instead of Chosen Sound

As this is a 3rd party app, it sounds like it is buggy. Does the Windows schemes work OK? If so, that puts it back to the buggy app.

I would go back to the app developer for assistance.

Hi, I just bought a new L430. My laptop won't play any sound before I open the sound settings in control panel & test a sound there. I have tried to update the driver but still no success. Any idea? Thanks. Regards. Haris

What if you uninstall the driver and use the generic Windows driver?

I have read a bunch of threads on multiple sites and have found some similar problems but nothing exactly like this.  Here is what doesn't work:-The windows sound on my computer does not work.  -I can go into the sound setup where you pick which sounds for different tasks (like windows startup), and the play button to preview that sound is "grayed" out.-Sound scheme is blank.  If I set the sound scheme to the "Windows Default", click apply and then click ok to close that menu, then go back into the sound scheme menu it is blank again.-There is no volume icon in my tray even though in the sound menu, it is clicked to be there.-No sound at all in IE.Here is what does work:-All other sound works fine such as playing the sound files for windows like  "Ding.wav" using windows media player.  Playing mp3's - no problem.  - Even if I go to the "Speech" icon in the control panel and listen to "Microsoft Sam" say "You have selected Microsoft Sam as the computer's default voice."  That works fine.I have downloaded new drivers for my sound device.  I have also ran the "DXDIAG" and all the sound test on there worked fine.Hope someone can help.Tired and rambling,Karl

I have good sound with other speakers on this desktop, but I wanted to save some workspace on my desk, so I recently got a new AX510 sound bar and attached it onto a Dell 2208WFP monitor, one of the monitors listed for that soundbar.  It powers up via the AC port built in to the monitor, just like it should, and I've correctly connected the audio cable on the soundbar audio output on my desktop.  But there's no sound at all.  I did get a static "pop" once... but no other sound.
So I am trying to figure out whether the sound bar is defective, or if this is possibly a Windows 10 issue, as I've read a few odd posts on the internet about people suddenly finding that previously working sound bars don't work in Windows 10.... or some other incompatibility (my desktop is a Studio XPS 8100, Windows 10).  I realize all of my equipment is not the latest, but it's all been in great working condition and the one new addition is the sound bar... I did plug my old speakers back in again, and they still work just fine.
I was thinking I can test the sound bar by connecting it to another computer at work (tomorrow) that's running Windows 7.  to determine if it's a Windows 10 issue -- or if it just doesn't work at all -- but would that be a definitive test it's not a Dell computer?  Any other ways to diagnose the problem and pin it down?  I can conceivably still return the sound bar if I determine it's defect... Answer:Getting no sound from sound bar AX510 with Studio XPS 8100 (Is this a Windows 10 issue or is it the sound bar?)

DELL C730C SoundBar Speakers AX510  is an analog sound bar that needs a AS510PA power supply if it cant get power from the monitor.

Windows 7 drivers are often required to be reinstalled and needed to get sound working again after update to 8 or 10.
It also has a volume knob with a switch that must be turned on. When you do that there is a white lite in the center of the sound bar that indicates power is on.

The analog out goes to the GREEN outlet.

I thought migration from Vista to 8.1 had gone too smoothly. Sound works after restoring defaults in Creative Diagnostics but on close down error message " VolPanlu.exe - Application Error The instruction at 0x6fdcf2ae referenced memory at 0x02439aa4. The memory could not be read. OK." I re-installed Creative SB X-Fi Extreme Music software and updated to the 8.1 driver. How can I get the pc to remember to save the sound settings please?

Answer:Sound then no sound, vista to 8.1, VolPanlu (Sound Blaster) problem

The solution via Creative:
Delete all Creative software (I used Revo uninstaller)
Run a registry cleaner (I used CCleaner)
Install the Windows 8.1 driver.
Sound was still being lost on shutdown but the answer was to put the pc into sleep mode, wake up, then sound remains stable in Entertainment Mode. I have no idea why that prevents default to Game Mode which caused loss of sound.

Hello - I have a Wave PC Model 600-a014. It had been used briefly as a demo machine at a convention. I am about to use it for field demo work and do i hit f9 and had it do a factory reset. I had personally not used this specific pc at this point. After a long factory reset, it reboot with normal setup screens and it said there were updates available and did i want to do that. I selected yes and it went and updated the pc. After the update was done, i was looking at the settings and i noticed there was no sound coming from the Wave speakers. I checked the usual control panels and Bang & Olufsen software and I could not make sound happen. I plugged in some headphones to the from port of the Wave PC and no sound at all either. I have the PC hooked up via HDMI to the HP monitor and that is the only peripheral that is connected. I have uninstalled the realtek driver and reinstalled it and no difference. Any other sugggestions out there would be much appreciated ! Tony

I am having sound trouble. The sound is cutting out. Sometime it works fine. Recently, it will just cut out, stay really low are only be static. IT happens with music and also when I am video chatting. Someone may be talking and the sound will just go really low or cut out completely.  I have had technicians reinstall all drivers and it will work sometimes but not all the time. Sound seems to work fine with headphones.

Still not working, any suggestions would be very very appreciated!

Doubleclick on the speaker icon in the system tray. Click Options then Properties, check all the boxs to show all the volume options. Then click ok. On the main speaker screen, make sure nothing is muted and everything is turned up (Microphone and CD Player shouldn't matter).

Hi guys...
I just plugged my Onkyo 6.1 Channel (S-680) to my computer. I connected the receiver to the Digital Out port of my motherboard (Intel 915GV Chipset-Asus PTGD1 - LA). It uses the Realtek ALC880 drivers. Whenever I open Sound Effect Manager and do the Speaker Test, sound comes only from my front speakers. The rears/centre/sub all light up but no sound is played. However, while running games/music/films I get sound from all my speakers (though not very satisfactory and not real surround sound). Can anyone please help me with this?

Also, I can't open Realtek HD Audio Manager (RTHDCPL.exe). Only RTLCPL.exe (Sound Effect Manager) works. When I click on RTHDCPL.exe nothing happens. Please do help out.

Answer:No Sound From Surround/Centre/Subwoofer In Realtek Sound Effect Manager Test

try this:

1) try to go to the settings of your sound effect manager & there are selections there for 2.0, or what ever you may find that corresponds to your speaker channel.

2) if nothing corresponds to the given selections, try to download the latest audio driver from your motherboard's manufacturer website.

3) otherwise, you need to plug-in a sound card that has the feature to play with 6.1 channel audio.

It's a new Dell and it has been making crackling sound since I got it.
I spent an hour on the phone with a technician who restored the laptop with Windows 8.1 to an earlier point in time and it stopped crackling for the rest of the day, but the next day, the noise was back.
The worst are "ding" sounds, they have more crackle than ding. Video playback is bad but at least we can understand what is said. Youtube is bad. mp3 audio is bad. Crackle is there with earphones too.

Hello. If it made the noise right out of the box you probably should have returned it as defective during the brief return period.
Does it make the noise only when running on battery power or also when plugged into house current?

Brand new Windows 7 Home Premium (6 bit) computer. When I click on the Sound control panel item, sometimes it takes 1-2 minutes to open. But that's kind of minor (although I'd like to know how to fix it), because sometimes the HDMI sound to my HDTV works fine, and sometimes it doesn't work at all. The only sure fix is to reboot the computer, which isn't really what I want to do every time I want sound coming from the HDTV speakers.

More details: if I reboot the computer, and then switch from the monitor to the HDTV for my video output, I can open the Sound control panel (opens at normal speed) and then I select the HDTV to be the default sound device; and everything is good. At some point, I stop watching the HDMI output to the HDTV, switch the video to my main monitor, and the sound now comes out of the computer speakers. Great. That's what I want. I can even turn off the HDTV, come back 20 minutes later, switch the video back to the HDTV and the sound goes through the HDTV speakers. Switch back and forth a couple of times and everything works as expected. Great. That's what I want.

But at some later point in time, it stops working, and I don't know what triggers this. At this later point in time, I switch the video from the monitor to the HDTV, but now the sound remains with the computer speakers, if I try to open the sound control panel, it takes 1-2 minutes, and when it finally opens the sound control panel no longer lets me select the HDTV to be the default soun... Answer:Sound Control panel takes 2 minutes to open; HDMI sound inconsistent

I had the slow opening sound panel/playback section for a while. I tried several things and all of a sudden the problem went away. Not sure what fixed it but I have updated the AMD video card drivers several times, no audio driver updates. The only common point is that I too have an AMD video card (HD7770).

In most cases, if the PC "speakers" (sound card) is set as the default audio playback device and then an HDMI cable is plugged into the PC it will automatically switch to the HDMI sound (and make it the default playback device), and if the cable is disconnected it automatically switches back to the speakers. If you are having problems accessing the sound panel, this is another option (for most) until you get the slow opening panel issue resolved.

Sound in windows has been giving me a hard time lately. I had to restore my registry manually via the Windows Recovery Console recently because Windows kept thinking it was in safe mode, thus preventing a repair installation from continuing. So, after restoring the registry from an earlier part of the day when the issue wasn't a problem, Windows started up fine, and everything was working as it once did. Except for sound.

The volume controls icon does not show in the taskbar. I've gone into Control Panel -> Sounds and Devices and checked the box that is supposed to place the controls in the taskbar, but to no avail. Still doesn't show up. I know that this is usually caused by incorrectly installed sound drivers, but they are installed fine and do not appear in an errored state in the device manager. I've also reinstalled the sound drivers from my motherboard's drivers disc multiple times with no change.

Oddly enough, any sounds that are supposed to be played by Windows do not play. If I open a file in Windows Media Player or in a game, the sound plays perfectly fine.

On top of that, I'm also getting trouble with recording sounds. Not just with a microphone, but even from they stereo mix channel. In Sounds and Audio Devices Properties, looking at the Voice tab, the default device for Voice Playback is blank. I set it to Realtek HD Audio Output, but when I press apply, it resets to blank. When I set it to the Realtek Output and go to the 'test hardware' button, I ca... Read more

After closing a tab heavy google chrome window my pc had a crash during this crash the 1 second of the song that was playing repeated til the pc rebooted. After this tho I no longer have any sound at all from my computer. I'm running windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 2 installed. The strange part that confuses me tho is that the sound mixer window shows audio levels when i do play music or youtube but even with volume at full blast there is no audio as a work around for the time being i've set my pc to broadcast my pc's audio and then just use my lap top to tune into my station to listen to my music but this is getting old really quick when i check my sound card (realtek high definition audio?) in device manager it says 'this device is working properly' is it possible my soundcard broke/fried and it still showing it fine with audio levels moving?

Good morning everyone,
I am having issues with sound on the M82 or 3306G1U as stated on the subject. The sound works perfectly fine for everything with the exception of Istation, I did notice that this is only affecting 2 out of the 20 plus computers we have, so its a bit hard to say its just the model. I have tried updating the drivers to the latest version, and as well verified that it was not just the input device for front and back jacks being wonky. Oddly enough the support agent I worked with, used TeamViewer and was able to hear the application just fine, however when I used speakers it was very, very faint but I could also hear it.
Is there any general help anyone can provide me to pinpoint the problem further?

Answer:Sound Issues Ideapad P500 - Sound stops working after 5 minutes

hi D,
Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.
From your observation, it's possible that the root cause is the sound driver.
To verify, can you try the following:
1. Uninstall the Realtek HD Audio Driver from the Control Panel (large icon view) > Programs and Features and reboot
2. After the reboot, Windows will now install a generic sound driver (High Definition Audio). Try to re-create the issue that you're having and observe.
3. If using the generic sound driver fixes it, try re-installing the audio driver from the D:\Drivers\Audio folder or from this link:
Realtek Audio Driver for 64-bit Windows

My Satellite laptop seems to have decided it has SPDIF audio and with this I have lost all sound.

I have tried installing the latest driver and searching device manager for errors but the only solution that has worked was to restore the computer to an earlier point and disable all automatic updates.

With updates disabled I have turned on my laptop to find again it shows the sound as SPDIF and subsequently no sound.

There is a slight crackle from the speakers which occurs at random and inoften intervals.

Please help as I'm at the end of my tether

May I ask you what notebook do you have and what OS you are using?
This would be helpful!

Regarding the sound issue;
In your case I would recommend checking the settings in control panel -> audio ?playback.

There you should see the playback devices (speakers, spdif, etc?)
The speakers should be set as default device.
The S/PDIF should be used only if you connect the notebook to an external device like TV, hifi, etc?

I have hyperlinked to a .wav file in an MS Word 2007 document, and the sound file plays without opening a media player.

Problem is the sound file is 10mins long, and I have no way of controlling the .wav file once I have activated the hyperlink.

Pressing escape stops the sound, but I cannot pause or rewind.

The hyperlink seems to be opening the sound file as an 'embedded' object that I have no control over.

During a presentation, I need to be able to pause the sound or even rewind it.

Why doesn't MS Word allow me to open the hyperlinked sound file in a media player?

Can you help?

My AC511 SoundBar is powered by one of the USB-ports on my P2315Q monitor.
I have connected the audio-OUT of the monitor to the audio-IN of the SoundBar (and there is no PC or other USB-sound-device available).
I have a Google Chromecast connected to the monitor's HDMI.
The audio-part of the video-stream is *not* coming out of the SoundBar.
Then I tried a normal external speaker, and there was *also* *no* sound.
Ultimately, I found out that the AC511 needs to be connected to a USB-sound-device, even just to amplify the audio-IN signal. Why would that be? How to fix that?
I also found out that the sound from the Chromecast (that enters the monitor via the HDMI), isn't relayed to the audio-OUT of the monitor. Bummer.

Altogether, what a waste of opportunities!

Greetings, Ruud

On my Lumia 1320 I simply can't use WIFI and BLUETOOTH the same time, because of sound interruptions. When I stream video from WIFI and connect AudioSystem via cable, it works. When I stream video from GSM mobile connection and connect AudioSystem via BLUETOOTH, it works. But in case of streaming via WIFI and have connected AudioSystem via BLUETOOTH, after about 10 minutes the sound started to interrupt. Maybe system turn on some power saving regime or started do some tasks on background, but I can't use my phone this way.

Answer:Lumia 1320 - WIFI on and sound via bluetooth leads to sound interruptions

There are two reasons for this issue that spring to mind. Firstly, it could be that your devices have some issue with communicating to each other due to driver squabbles, as the Bluetooth and WiFi systems work hand in hand (unlike the GSM system). Of course, the only way to address this on a phone is to make sure the OS and firmware are up to date (as always, a hard reset might help, but is a pain of course) and to update the firmware of the client device if possible. You can test for this type of issue by trying other BT audio devices. The other thought is that your device should have two WiFi aerials (N300) and these are also used for Bluetooth provision. If one of these internal aerials has come adrift, devices tend to resort to punting both Bluetooth and WiFi down the same aerial. This can and does cause just the issues you mention, and will impact WiFi speed badly as well. Best of luck, I hope you find a solution.

Hi all,Since about a moth,i've got lenovo thinkpad R500, there's a problem with sound, sometimes, couple of times per week, for example after waking up from hibernation there's no sound from speakers! and there's only from headphones but usually this sound from headphones is like in slow motion, really bad quality, like sb would scratch vinyl record :-) I've checked everything, nothing is mute, the audio devices, codecs etcI hope this is not hardware issue, but I suppose it is... br,Jacek

Ever since I got my second Video Card and went SLI I have had crippling sound problems. After playing for a while all sounds get replace with a high pitched squeal. This is only with games, not music (using WMP), DVDs (using WinDVD), and only with my sound card, not the (crappy) onboard sound (which has no problem). Some games may play for three minutes, others for close to fifty before this consistently happens. It seems to be simply subsistuting all sounds with this annoying noise. I quit the game it goes quiet, but music is now affected and DVDs have NO sound. Single GPU works fine (either card, either PCI-E slot), sound card in either PCI slot still causes the problem. I recently got a newer, better sound card but it does the exact same thing. I think it may be either a video card issue, or the motherboard. Is it something to due with the way the video card handles sound? Or the motherboard? HELP!! I really like the improved graphics (on a relative budget) that SLI brings, and don't like being hobbled like this.

Tried Turning down Sound Card Acceleration with the old card, didn't help.

Just bought an xfi fatal1ty sound card and I bought "Medusa 5.1 surround headphones" to go with it

The problem is that the rear speakers sound quieter or muffled from the front and center speakers in my headphones

I tried everything I could think of to make the rear sound like the front but nothing has worked

I know that my rear speakers are not defective because if I switch the front wire and rear wire around the rear speakers sound like they should

I donít know whatís making the rear sound so off

Someone Help

Overall the headphones sound great but the 2 rear speakerís just throw away the whole 5.1 surround headphone feeling

I tried contacting

But they have poor service

Answer:Just bought a new sound card but the rear speakers sound muffled or quieter Help

I'm not the audio guru here... but from what i've seen about the medusa 5.1 headset is that it is a USB headset. Is yours?

I've got the X-fi fatal1ty FPS and a pair of Zalman Theater 6 headphones. Here is how I hook it up.

See the 3 plugs White is Front - Gray is rear - Black is sub

The Black goes in the far right, Gray goes next to it, white next to that, and my mic goes on the far left.

These headphones are fantastic and have a perfect surround sound field.

I have a toshiba a30 and all off a sudden my sound disappeared, drivers are intact and it says my sound card is working fine, the start up tune can be hear very faintly if the room is in total silence and you hold up your ear to it.

I recently restored my computer hoping this would fix the problem but unfortunately not....
can someone help me please?!

Answer:Satellite A30: sound disappeared - drivers & sound card is working fine

Hm, maybe you should try to turn the volume louder. Try this with the volumecontrol of Windows in the systemtray, with the control in the Mediaplayer or with the volumecontrol on your machine.
Try to connect a Hifi or at least headphones to your headphones connector, just to prove if your soundcard or your speakers are not faulty.
If the sound of your speaker is not the same like with your headphones than you have probably a hardware-failure which has to fixed by a technician or a servicepartner of Toshiba.

I recently purchased the Creative Sound Blaster Audigy FX and am having problems getting it to actually play any audio or record any sound.

I've browsed other threads with similar issues on this board and as such have disabled my motherboards onboard audio in my BIOS settings, have reinstalled the drivers from disc and from the Creative website, and even attempted to use Driverpack Online to download any missing drivers. However my problem still persists.

I can see that the Sound Blaster Audigy FX is present on the sound option on the control panel, but it never actually plays any sound. Additionally, whenever I try to play a test sound in the speakers advanced properties I am returned with the error "Failed to play test tone".

I've included a few screenshots that might help make things a bit more clear, and I'd be very appreciative of any help I can get with this issue.

Answer:Creative Sound Blaster Audigy FX Sound Card, no playback/recording

First thing, I assume you have correctly attached your speakers to the new SoundBlaster.

As you have a separate sound card, did you disable any on-board (on the motherboard) audio in the BIOS? If not, that is the first step. The on-board, is still enabled, can conflict with the SoundBlaster.

Also, temporarily disable the AMD HD audio in the Device Manager for testing (the AMD is for HDMI audio). Reboot after doing this.

Finally, although this has may not have any affect on playback, the default recording device should be the SoundBlaster "What You Hear". In the Recording sound panel, RIGHT click in an empty area and then check to show Disconnected and Disabled devices. If the SoundBlaster was installed correctly What You Hear should now show up and you can enable it and make it the default recording device.

changed integrated sound card for Sound Blasster Live but it is not working right. It shows up in the device mnager, but when I go to Start>>Settings>>Control Panel>>Sounds & Audio Devices, it shows that there is NO AUDIO DEVICES.....why. I am running Windows XP Pro, on a P4-1.8, which has an Asus motherboard model P4S333.

Answer:changed integrated sound card for Sound Blasster Live but it is not working right

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

First. Go into your bios, and disable your onboard sound, and save and exit bios.

Once your computer has booted up, go into contol panel, and double click the sounds and audio devices icon.

Click on the audio tab, and set the sound playback device to your new soundcard.

Do the same for the sound recording device. Click on the voice tab and do the same. Click apply/ok.

Make sure you have the correct drivers installed for your new soundcard, and that your speakers are plugged into the new soundcard.

Its bit complicated.
I have 5 year old Compaq Pressario V3611AU notebook with AMD Atholon X2 TK-55 processor. Was using Windows XP and everything working fine. Recently I upgraded RAM to 2GB & processor was changed to AMD Turion(tm) X2 TL-60 2.00Ghz. I installed windows 7 and everything worked fine for a week with no issues.
Recently when switched on it showed red cross on volume device. When I checked in device manager the sound video & Game controller has disappeared.

I checked most of the site but unable to install the exact driver.

Even I tried to add with Legacy Drivers in Device Manager but failed to install the correct driver.Even I re installed my Windows 7 but same issue. When I click on Volume device to fix the issue end up with Hardware Changes has been effected.

Please help me whether it is an issue with Sound Card or with driver.

Ok guys i just finished a new triple monitor build which you can check out here:,132781.msg857477.html#msg857477Everything is working on my new build except that my ASUS Xonar Essence STX sound card produces no sound. I doubled checked my power connections and the card in fact powers on. I have also got the latest Win7 drivers for my card of the ASUS website. And my PC recognizes the card and everything. But when I plug my speakers in I get no sound. My speakers works perfectly on laptop so those aren't defective. I connect the speakers to the sound card via a gold line in adapter.  I doubt the adapter has any problem as its not electronic. I worried that the sound card's jack itself is defective and that I may just have to return the card. The only way I get sound is through my front panel audio input which is connected directly to my ASUS Sabertooth Z77 motherboard. The card just doesn't recognize that my speakers are plugged in as illustrated by the pic below:I would appreciate any help and suggestions greatly!

Answer:ASUS Xonar Essence STX sound card produces no sound in new build

I have a same issue with my RealTek audio. My problem started when upgrading from Windows XP to Windows 7. I got the latest drivers as well and still a problem. I ended up installing one of those startech USB audio adapters as my solution as for when switching back to my Windows XP drive I was able to prove it was an issue with my Realtek chipset/driver and Windows 7.But on a NEW build I dont think you want a $10 solution and you want it to work properly. Is this audio adapter a new adapter which originally came with Windows 7 support, or did ASUS add support by making a modern driver for it. My Realtek was exactly the same working in the front only, BUT I also had NO microphone support as well and for gaming and needing Ventrillo voice communications I went for the $10 fix and stuck with Windows 7 and not buy a new sound card to install internally. One thing you could check is if your motherboard has integrated audio and your front port is tapped into the integrated audio. IOpening the side panel and tracking the audio cable back you might find it plugged into the motherboard vs sound card. You might not be getting your audio from the card, but instead integrated. I know that with my USB sound adapter fix I had to go into preferences in audio properties and specifically select this USB audio device as the priomary device than the integrated that had insufficient Windows 7 support. I then was up and running with no audio problems thru this $10 fix. Is your sound card set up as... Read more

Hi all,

after having downloaded and installed the latest sound driver upgrade a few days ago I discovered that I could no longer use my sound card as recording device. Now I can only choose between the notebook's integrated microphone and the line-in jack.

Does anyone know how re-enable sound card recording, please?

Answer:Satellite P200 (PSPB3E) - Sound driver upgrade disables sound card recording

I'm not sure if i was clear or not.
Actually i can no longer record sound coming directly from my sound card.

I used to do it before installing that new sound driver.
I don't have a restore point for a date preceeding the install and i also remember that the installer warned me that it would uninstall the current sound driver before installing the new one.

So i guess that uninstalling the latest driver will leave me with no sound at all.

So what should i do?
How do i recover the ability to record sound from my sound card ?

Ok, yeah that topic title isn't entirely clear. Here's my situation: I have just bought a Toshiba Satellite L300 with Vista; Realtek HD Audio Manager is installed. I would like to record the sound from a video file using Goldwave (a sound editing program); but I don't want to have to listen to the sound while it's recording.

On Windows XP you used to be able to record sound from the stereo mix, but mute the speakers and it would still record. Now I find I'm forced to unmute my speakers in order to record anything on my computer. (Yes, I've fiddled with all the mute buttons, ensured all playback and recording devices are working and volumes turned up. My current solution is to plug in my headphones to my laptop and unmute the speakers in order to record... and not put the headphones in my ears)

I've now spent the last 4 hours looking for a solution, and I have to say this is particularly ridiculous. I've used Vista before and I've heard the rumours of how much people dislike it, but honestly, why is it that now the audio capabilities seem to be so reduced?

Does anyone have a solution of how to record sound with the speakers muted?

Answer:Satellite L300: How to record sound from a video without listening sound

I have also recorded the audio stream from a video file using other software called No32. and Win XP
I used also the stereo-mix but to be honest I never muted the speakers while recording.
To be honest I don?t know if this is possible but if you want to test it you could try access the Realtek HD audio manager in Control Panel and to set the speakers to mute in the first tab called ?Speaker?.
But as I said, I never tested it and therefore I?m not quite sure if this will work.

Hello there,I have downloaded the tryout version of Adobe Audition (formerly Cool Edit Pro) onto my computer:OS Me, 128 RAM, Yamaha AC-XG WDM sound card (I think). My minidisc deck output is connected to the input socket of the PC via a high quality dual pin to single jack cable. When I first went from W8.1 to W10, everything worked except the sound. Now after several updates, the icon speaker in task bar has an x by it, and when I hover mouse over icon the message states that "no audio output device is installed." When I go to device manager, there is no longer a listing for sound.
My thinking is that perhaps the sound had been switched off in bios. When I attempted to go into bios at startup, there is no longer a screen that allows me to get into bios.
So, I have at least two issues that I need direction.

Answer:W10 caused sound to not work, now sound card no longer recognized

I had the sound problem initially, this was resolved for me, by installing the latest GPU drivers as mine is hooked up by HDMI. And Windows 10 seems to have a passion for installing old video drivers.

Please help me with this problem, it would be much appreciated.

Philips MMS 460 speaker system
WinXP with Service Pack 2

I tried both, with my onboard c-media soundcard and a SB Live 24 Bit (should play up to 7.1 sound).

I only get stereo sound in winamp and games.
Speakers are wired correctly cause when I test them with the soundcard-software all 5 speakers and the subwoofer produce sound.
Creative Diagnose also shows everything as OK.
I have SB Live set as my standard output unit. It's activated in the hardware manager and no conflicts are shown. I use the drivers that went with the installation-CD with the soundcard. I'm totally at a dead end with my latin.

Thanks in advance and have a nice day,

Answer:5.1 Sound only working in sound-test not in action (winamp, games, etc.)

I think that in order to get true surround sound, you need to access an audio stream that is carrying a signal for all teh channels. Winamp only outputs in stereo, and so do
most games. If you try DooM 3, you should get audio coming from all speakers.

Hey everyone!

I'm having some serious problems with my sound card over here. I have an Asus P4SDX motherboard that SUPPOSEDLY has an integrated sound card, but it doesn't seem to be working. We're talking no headphones, no speakers, NOTHING. I downloaded and installed the AC97 sound drivers and it's STILL not working. Windows Media Player gives me an error that says "Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There may not be a sound device installed on your computer, it may be in use by another program, or it may not be functioning properly."

I've tried Microsoft's troubleshooter, too, and it didn't tell me anything that I hadn't already tried.

I'm new to this whole taking care of my own computer thing b/c I'm off at college now and it's really starting to frustrate me. I know more a/b computers than most girls do but apparently it's not enough! Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

I have a PC-Chips M848 ALU V2.1 motherboard with an onboard soundcard, C-media CMI9739A 6 channel audio.
I have downloaded the latest driver from the PC chips website, as the one that came on the CD didn't work at all. I also have the AC97 Realtek drivers installed.

My problem is that if I try & play an MP3 or a DVD the sound gets really jumpy or if it's missing part of the track out. It sounds like when there is a thumbprint on a CD & it skips over it.

Now I'm new to this so it might be something simple like it is set up to play through 6 speakers or something & as I only have 2 that is the problem, if it is great but can someone tell me how to do this. If not can someone suggest some other solutions??

I'm running XP Pro.

Answer:on board sound problems - sound keeps jumping / dropping music.

Onboard audio can use alot of system resources and you will get audio artifacts when there are programs running in the background, system memory is low or you have an under powered processor. Win XP Pro has alot of crap running in the background. What are your other system specs? You may want to think about getting a sound card. Good ones run $20-30.

Any other suggestions? I emailed gateway about the problem a couple of weeks ago and they sent a link to reinstall the driver and it worked for a few weeks. Then a couple days it started getting crackly again so I reinstalled the driver and it was fine...but now this past week it's been doing it like crazy and now it seems like it's not even taking to fixing it for more then like 10 minutes.

Is there anything else I can do before I have to send it into Gateway AGAIN!

Answer:Re-installing sound driver no longer helping crackly sound

You could always buy a sound card. I'm assuming you're using an onboard one right now, so if you buy a sound card you'll have better quality sound, if you buy a good one, and it could speed up your games a bit, if your CPU is the bottleneck, since the card does the soundwork instead of the CPU. But if you don't want to do that you could try reinstalling windows. If that doesn't work you'll probably have to send it back to gateway.

The sound isn't played smoothly there are pauses and there is a big cracking

This is not because of the speakers, I have also tright it through the headphone tube.
Could this possilybe because of a damaged soundcard.

It's sound really rubbish and the laptop isn't even 2 years old yet.

What could it be?

Answer:Satellite L665D - sound isn't played smoothly - crackling sound

I think this is not related to faulty sound card but due to old iRST (Intel Rapid Storage Technology) driver.

I found an thread about very similar issue.

Update of the iRST (Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver) to version V10.1.0.1008 or higher should solve this problem.

I recommend trying this out!

Anyway, i don't have a sound card. I Recently got a headset/mic (Altec Lansing AHS515) and when i put the headphone/mic jack into the back of my computer (in the mobo connection) the line out or headphones work fine. I have no applications running at all in Windows. I have the system sound muted, but I still have some sound coming out of the speakers. It sounds like some talk radio. I also have all networking disabled. I have no idea where this is coming from.

How can I tell if any process on my computer is accessing the sound drivers?

Answer:Solved: computer sound muted but sound is still coming from speakers

In some cases, if the speakers are cheaply made and not sheilded, they can acutally pickup radio waves (especially if you live near a radio tower). Does the "Talk radio" continue if the speakers are on, while the computer is off?

Do I need to turn something else on or adjust more audio settings somewhere?

As another note, before I was able to install the drivers from the cd itself, Windows had automatically installed something after recognizing the new hardware, then I ran the driver CD. I also had a previous external sound blaster audio card/driver that I was using before.

Thank you for the help. Have a great day!

I am getting a laptop. Right now I am deciding between regular "High Definition Audio 2.0" and a "ExpressCard Sound Blaster X-Fi Laptop Sound Card with Wireless Receiver Bundle". The latter is 134 dollars more. Would the latter make the output of sound better on external speakers. Say if you're a DJ, and you use the laptop, would the sound coming out of the speakers at those high volumes be much better if you have the better soundcard? Or does it not have any effect on the output sounds? Thanks!

Answer:Do Sound Cards Effect The Output of Sound To External Speakers?

It affects the external output even more than the one from the integrated speakers.

It's the most suspicious sound I've ever heard. It sounds exactly like fat, felt tip marker making a quick check on paper. It can also be compared to a rat sniff or a piece of paper being turned. I wear headphones and can hear this noise occasionally for up to 15 minutes. It likes to happen at night, when 'they' are active ( humor me ). Because of the sneaky, low volume, discreet, low down, creepy, stalky, shifty sound I am disposed to imagine that someone is looking through my files for credit information and they are unaware of these sounds from my sound card, or they don't care about the sound because they are safe from being caught.

Sound like I'm crazy? Just paranoid. I did say it makes me imagine. The kind of person I am is the same kind that will run system restore at a moment's notice for anything that looks suspicious or a NoScript violation. Because that sound is clearly designed to resemble a sniffing rat doing something sneaky on my computer. I tried to record the output with Audacity 1.3, but it had stopped before I had recorded anything.

My setup:

Windows XP Pro 64 bit Service Pack 2
Verizon High Speed Internet
Marvell Yukon 88E8056 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller
LinkSys Router routing to a Windows 7 laptop, WPK-PSK, TKIP
Soundblaster Live!
Mozilla FireFox

Answer:Solved: Suspicious sound coming from sound card output.

It was that Windows XP search dog. When you ctrl + f to open the search side bar in a window there is an animated dog that seems innocuous. Every 15 minutes or so it will scratch itself and make that noise twice. As long as that search side bar is open, minimized or not, that noise will persist.

I know many people here have the same problem but till now I have not found any solution.
My soundcard is a Realtek. After reinstalling Windows 7 I have no sound out from my headphones while I have some from my speakers.

As soon as I connect the headphones, the Realtek manager appears and I choose headphone but if I press the "Test" button there is no sound and no sound if I play music.
Any des/re-installation of the drivers does not fix.

I have to mention that my headphones work perfectly with Ubuntu. So the jack entry is good.
In "Playback devices" from the sound control icon, the "Speakers" entry has "Set default" in grey.

Thanks a lot for any help.

Answer:Satellite C660 - No sound from headphones but sound from speakers - Win7

> As soon as I connect the headphones, the Realtek manager appears and I choose headphone but if I press the "Test" button there is no sound and no sound if I play music.

Go to Control Panel -> Realtek HD audio manager

Here you should see the tab ?speakers?. Click on the yellow folder sign in the right upper corner.
Ensure that the option ?disable front panel jack detection? is NOT checked.
Furthermore check the option at the bottom called ?Enable auto popup dialog???
[Realtek HD audio manager screenshot|]

By the way: in control panel -> sound -> playback tab click right and mark the two options ?show disabled devices?, ?show hidden devices??
Now you should also see the headphones jack. In case it was disabled, you could make it active.

my computer has no sound. I cannot figure out why. I reinstalled my Avance AC'97 sound driver and no luck. the speakers work fine. does anyone know what i can do? I didn't change anything before the sound went out. It just isn't there.

Answer:No sound from computer, speakers work fine... Avance AC'97 sound

physically check your cables, as usually this problem is caused by human error. next, check all of your volumes. what OS, service pack, and version are you running?

Hello, first post, first Lenovo.I am a teacher.  A Lenovo A57 9702 was donated to our school and I got it.  It has a Vista basic sticker on it, but has been upgraded to Vista Business.  I think it?s a brand new machine.  My problem is that the only sound I get is from the onboard speaker.  The front and back sound jacks are not outputting sound.  Plugging in speakers or headphones won?t even cut out the onboard speaker sound; it?s like they are not even connected. If you have a clue, thank you!

Answer:A57 sound from onboard speaker only; integrated sound jacks do not work.

I installed the A57 audio drivers.  Afterward it said that they may not have installed correctly.  It still does not work. Thank you.

Hey guys,

I have a Compaq Presario SRN5250nx that came equipped with windows Vista Home premium 32 bit operating system and came with the Realtek HDaudio which I have my speakers running on...

Now I have installed a Delta 66 soundcard for recording and mixing... that went fine, however the realtek audio has disappeared from my device manager, and will reappear once the soundcard is removed?? I'm not able to even access the realtek icon with the soundcard in as it is unresponsive??

I've updated the D66 sound card with the newest drivers for the system and it seems the only way to get sound would be to run in through the sound card, which I'd rather not do cause that would mean I'd have to go and buy new speakers which I'd like to avoid....

Optimally the soundcard would be enabled for recording then disable for any playback.... any thoughts or help would be much appreciated....

Answer:Sound issues with realtek hd audio and delta 66 sound card

In your device manager try trouble shooting the sound card, i had the same problem with my old laptop, but if you troubleshoot it, it should come up with "search for updates" or sumthing around that area, if so click on that and it will come up with "apply the fix?" click on that and it should start working again.

Hey, according to your description, you don't have a problem in your sound hardware or drivers.
What do you mean by "but all just screwed everythig up"?
For now, try the following:
Go to "Control Panel", double click "Sound and Audio Devices", then from the "Sounds" tab, ensure that there are wave files associated with the "Exit Windows" and "Start Windows" events.
or try selecting "Windows Default" from the "Sound scheme" drop-down list.

My Lenovo ideapad with Windows 8.1 has been having problem with too small sound, and I went to search the methods to improve it and found that I could activate the Sound Equilizer from sound setting. However, each time I try to do so, any software that plays music stops playing any sound. Their "play" button do not react anymore, or they send me error message as I double click on sound file to play with them. How can I fix this error? The action I took was as follows:right side of tool bar --> Right click on the sound icon --> Sounds --> playback (left most tab) --> double click on speaker "Conexant Smartaudio HD" --> Expansion (third tab) --> check "Sound equilizer", the fourth option in the gray box of Expansion, and click OK to complete the setting. After this action, no sounds can be played using any programm - I tried Windows Media Player, iTunes, Quicktime Player, VLC Media Player, the Windows 8 Music Player. None of them worked. Some sends me message that the format of the sound file is not readable, even though they are very normal mp3 or wav files. To fix this I had to bring all changed settings of Sound to original. Then the files can be played again. What can I do to fix the small sound problem?

Hi! I just installed a new mother board and cpu. Its an ECS 755-A2 mother board with a 3200+ AMD Sempron/64-bit CPU. It's not the best, but i was trying to save money.

Before, I had a soyo and a 2800+ AMD Athlon XP and i had the Sound Blaster Live 5.1. Now with this ECS mb, the sound card doesn't get detected anymore, even in device manager. I downloaded the new driver for the Sound Blaster Live 5.1 from their official website and when I came to install it... it said that there were no Sound Blaster cards detected on my computer even though it was securely pushed in IN a pci slot!!

Then I decided that I don't need sound blaster so i installed the driver for the integrated sound card on my mb (realtek AC-97) and everything LOOKS fine according to their program and the control panel (sound and audio options) but i dont receive any sound from anything at all. I was planning on buying a NEW sound card but then i decided to test this Sound Blaster Live 5.1 on my bro's computer. Ironically, it was detected on his 1.2 ghz AMD Athlon Thunderbird and now i'm puzzled as why it wasn't detected on mine.

What solutions have I tried?

I installed numerous drivers for both the sound blaster and the integrated sound card repeatedly and there wasn't any hope.

I re-installed the OS twice (I'm willing to do a third though)

I don't know what else I can try.. can anyone help and please don't say the mother board :[?

I have an onboard realtec 97 sound device, and it has multiple plugs on the back of my cpu, Green, for speakers, pink for mic, then theres a blue, black and orange plugs also.

I dont know what the blue black and orange ones are for, but my question is this.

I have a headset with a mic, which had a seperate jack for the earpiece and the mic, i use both ventrillo and teamspeak but not both at the same time, and i was wondering if it was possible to plug the earpiece into something to just use the ventrillo or teamspeak audio streams, while having the regular desktop speakers broadcast the sound from a game and my sirius satellite radio. currently all sound comes from the speakers, green plug, what exactly are the blue, orange and black plug for? and is the above scenario possible? thanks.

Answer:Sound stream splitting? multiple plugs for sound devices

Im not sure whether you can split the stream or either turning it on and off as you wish. But what i know is the function of those colour plugs.
It all means that your sound card is compatible with 7.1 theater speaker configuration. As i remember, green is for front channels, blue is for rear channels, red is for subwoofer and centre speaker, and orange is for middle (7.1) channels. Don;t worry about all these colours, it shows that your soundcard is good. However i've even came across with an integrated sound card which has 6 plugs (2green, red, blue, orange, red, and black).

Edit, also it's not my speakers I don't think. It works on my other comp

Can anyone tell me how I would do this? I've tried for days to locate my driver with no success.

Answer:Reinstalling a sound driver for onboard sound from a pre-packaged Windows XP

normally you can go to the manufacturer's website and download the orignal OEM drivers for your computers model and series.
usually under Customer service and support or downloads on the companies' website.

If not an OEM install from a major manufacturer such as Dell or Compaq etc, then you should still be able to find out the manufacturer of the motherboard itself and go to their website and do the same

I'm working on husband's pc, it is an HP Media Ctr. set up. Pavilion 4100e. We had to do a System Restore when pc was over run with virus/trojan infections. SR resulted in some lost Driver/Controller files, including ethernet and sound card. I have recovered all Driver/Controller files-- and everything is working except for sound.

I have uninstalled Creative Audigy Audio Processor (through Device Manager) and reinstalled (through Found New Hardware). I have run dxdiag, only to find "device cannot start" under problem devices/sound card.

Any suggestions on how to get this to work again? I cannot use System Restore to go back to when it was working, because that would take me back to all the virus/trojan infections and nothing was working.

Any help would be appreciated~

Did my searching and couldn't find this one...

When I modify the speaker volume using the "Volume Mixer" icon, it generates a sound. When I adjust using the "Speakers/Headphones" icon, it does not make a sound.
I would like to mute the Windows 7 sound that happens when I adjust the sound, preferably without effecting the other system sounds? I can't find out which system 'event' it is that causes a sound to be generated when I modify the speaker volume. I'd like to mute it, i.e. no sound when I change the volume.

Answer:System Event - Changing sound makes a sound, how to mute it?

Maybe the solution is in this tutorial

I have a problem with audio on system speakers Inspiron 13 5368 2-in-1. I have exhausted all my ideas.
The audio is fine through plugged in headset but through system speakers it starts loud and fades away to very faint audio coming from two speakers.Could this be some type of Auto volume control? This problem exists with ITunes with local media, DIRECTV, Slacker, YouTube.
This has existed through several W10 upgrades. I am on the latest W10. No updates available. I have used Dell Auto Update and verified through the website no other drivers are missing or outdated
With the deal Audio I restored to default, disabled equalizer, audio and microphone enhancement. No luck
I have removed audio devices from device manager rebooted to same results. Any other ideas?

Answer:Fading sound on system speakers but sound is fine on headphones

djjmj wrote: " I have used Dell Auto Update "

Dell Auto Update you're referring to is Dell Support Assist? If no, I suggest you diagnose Audio with Dell Support Assist. Most Dell systems have Support Assist pre-installed. You can check by typing Support Assist onto [Cortana] search box or right click windows logo and then click on 'Programs & Features'. If Support Assist isn't installed on system then I suggest you click on the link below and stroll down to 'Download Now'.

I have this problem. I just bought a new computer. Dell XPS8300. Sometimes it'll lag really bad for 2 - 4 seconds and during that period, the sound will sound really bad and "pixelated".

(add this to the back of the url of youtube.)

You can hear what it sounds like on the youtube video. It's about 2 to 3 times worse normally. Does anybody knows what's going on? Thanks!

Answer:Sound and video problems -- weird sound and lag at random moments

I'm having this same exact problem. Does anyone have any clue what it could atleast be related to? Dell wanted me to restore my hard drive to factory settings but 1. I don't feel that would help and 2. I have nothing to back up all my stuff. I'm using an XPS 435T/9000 with an ATI HD Radeon 5880 video card and whatever the generic sound card is that comes with it. If there's any solution that doesn't involve me having to go out and spent more money on an external or something it'd be greatly appreciated.

please help me.

Answer:dell xps l501x sub woofer sound shuttering / fluttering sound

Hello. Are you talking about the laptop's internal speakers? Or about this that you put in the "tag" field:
"100W 5.1 Surround Speaker System with 5.8 GHz Wireless Rear Channels and Subwoofer"?
It most probably is a hardware issue. If you still have the original hard drive and if it has never been wiped, you can run the audio tests in Dell 32-bit Diagnostics. Other than that the only good test is to replace the bad speakers and see if that fixes it, or do a system recovery. If the recovery does not fix it then it is because of bad hardware.

Hello there,
As in the title: I have lost sound after latest Windows 10 update, which happened yesterday (23rd June 2017) - I am using Creative Sound Blaster Z sound card. I have tried reinstalling the drivers, then reinstalling the device, then reinstalling the device and the drivers - nothing helped. When I am testing the device I can hear something really silent - but all of my audio settings are maxed. I do not know what to do next to fix this issue.

Thanks in advance for any tips and advices.

P.S. Also the system and the Sound Blaster Z-Series control panel does not see my microphone plugged, but it is plugged to the same place as before the update. I also checked the settings in the Sound Blaster Z-Series control panel, and everything is set as before the update.

P.S. no.2 : The system does see the Sound Card working, as for example when I play a youtube video that sound indicator next to the Sound Blaster Z device in sound settings is going green and moving.
