Question: Keyboard Malware?

Hello. I just recently reformatted my laptop due to this weird issue that occurred. I was unable to type anything other then "[" key and whenever I tried to open easy of access (for on screen keyboard) the computer would crash. I'm unable to navigate through the DOS screen to reinstall Bios for my computer (as I was recommended that). I did nothing about this until about a month later I decided to turn on my laptop and try to solve the problem. Now I'm able to type but the keyboard would randomly hold the "ctrl" key and whenever it's not holding the ctrl key, I'm unable to use the copy and paste shortcuts (Ctrl+V and Ctrl+C). To make things worst, I'm only able to type whenever I have the on-screen keyboard active (but windowed out only) and even then, sometimes I'll have to close and reopen the on-screen keyboard just to get this thing to type again. I tried reinstalling and updating the drives of the PS2 Keypad drivers and had no effect. I've also ran McAfee full system scan and Malwarebytes to see if there was any viruses or malware but they both came back as clean. I also tried plugging in a other keyboard and there were no changes.

I'm using a 64 bit Windows 7. I'm not sure what other system specs one would need but I'll gladly inform you if it's a must.

Here is the HiJack this log.

Answer:Keyboard Malware?

Hiya and welcome to Tech Support Guy

Are you still having this problem? If so, can you run the following:

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
* IMPORTANT !!! As you download it rename it to username123.exe and save it to your Desktop

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
Remember to re-enable the protection again afterwards before connecting to the Internet.

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix... Read more

Some keys/ key combinations that were previously working are no longer working. It has affected the backspace key and the Right Shift Key (RSK). Occasionally when typing, text might start being erased from nowhere. Key combination like the RSK and up arrow do not work, but the RSK with the down arrow works. Other independent RSK function work.
I thought it was a 'normal' malware attack so I fully scanned my system using a windows defender but the problem still persisted. I then formatted drive C (containing the OS) and performed full re-installation of all apps. This changed nothing.

Make sure you have the right keyboard installed and the language pack for your country.

this is a follow up on my supposedly resolved thread:

[SOLVED] delete button shuts down PC and other key modifications

I really do apologize for hastily closing the thread.

I'm going to enumerate every step i've taken.

DAY 1:

im on win xp sp3, system scanners are cccleaner,nod32 and superanti spyware.

this is what happened.

im browsing though my yahoo mail inbox, saw this spam (subject: unknown)
decided to add the email address to blocked emails. i have to open the email so that i can see the address.
the problem began.

these are my troubleshooting procedures:
1. ran scanners - nothing detected
2. cleaned cookies, history
3. ccleaner registry scan - nothing
4. system restore - still
5. imported a backup reg file

I believe that upon opening the email it modified some of registry keys for the keyboard since i dont see any unrecognized processes in my task manager, at least from the visible list.

it is quite annoying since i use keyboard shortcuts alot like ctrl+arrow keys to navigate on some texts.

also some keys that have been modified is:

insert key = stand bys the PC
pressing - = -0
pressing 1 = `1

any help will be very much appreciated

I have had an issue on my computer with a rootkit in the past, and it was a pretty serious infection.  Lately I have six keys on my keyboard that have suddenly stopped working: m, n, j, h, u, and y.  These are all around the middle of the keyboard, (sort of) together, so I thought one of my kids had spilled something on the keyboard, though they promise they haven't.  The keys don't stick, they aren't any harder to press down, they feel fine when I type -- they just don't work.  I've tried to blow air in to clear out dust, and they still don't work.  Is it possible that this problem can be caused by malware?

Answer:Can malware affect keyboard?

No, this sounds like a hardware issue. Do you have another keyboard you can use to see if it works properly?

I am running Win XP. I opened my computer this afternoon and the screen was full of malware saying my computer was infected and buy thier removal tool. I could not open any programs or even use the keyboard. I restarted in safe mode and did a system restore for 2 days ago and everything looks OK except the keyboard wont work. The lights come on but none of the keys will work. Some of the hot buttons work. The board will work in CMOS but not when windows loads. I have uninstalled through the device manager and keyboard in control panel and restarted. There is a screen that says that computer has detected new hardware and so I want to install, I click yes reboot and it is still x'ed out in device manager and won't work. I did troubleshoot and get this."Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware because a previous instance of the device driver is still in memory. Thanks for the help, I'm going crazy!

My IBM Thinkpad x60s I think is infected. I can't type anything, one or two keystrokes turns into a string of gibberish and the computer is constantly right-clicking. The mouse also sometimes turns into a little dinosaur when it's processing stuff and I know it wasn't there before. I've run my anti-virus software but nothing turns up.

I tried booting up in safe more, but my keyboard was still acting weird. The only way I was even able to log in was because the computer has a finger scanner.

any thoughts? I'm on a second computer now.
Thanks!!

I'm using a Dell desktop with Windows XP Pro, and I got hit by a bunch of malware while cruising the interwebs. It completely locked up my computer, so I restarted it, but for some reason it wouldn't recognize my USB keyboard, even though everything else (my USB mouse, ipod, etc.) still worked fine.
After fiddling around, I discovered that it worked fine during the initial startup (when you can press F2 to get to the boot menu and such), but not after XP started and I needed to input my password to log into Windows. After even more messing about, I found that it works fine when I boot up in safe mode, so I did, downloaded malwarebytes and thought I got rid of the infection. Unfortunately, my computer still only recognizes the keyboard when in safe mode (which is where I'm typing this from). Anyone have any idea as to what's wrong / how to fix it?

Answer:Infected with malware, now keyboard won't work?

Is it OK if I bump this? I could really use some help with this.

My friend's PC had an extremely malicious virus. I found the file sysguard.exe in the task manager and stopped the process.

I then downloaded the confiker fix and malwarebytes to my mac and moved them to her PC with a USB drive. I was able to scan the system and run malwarebytes.

Since then, her display has become EXTREMELY distorted (it was a bit distorted before) but now it's unreadable. Extremely fuzzy and I can't see what I am looking at.

The keyboard has been changed. I can't download avira for her because I can't register it. The L has become a 3, the G something else and the A a 5.

She has a very old computer - Windows XP from 2002 I think??

Laptop: Sony Vaio VPCEB2C5E running Windows 7

While visiting websites for a project (investment websites - didn't think there was anything dodgy) my laptop started performing strangely. Several of the keys stopped working - p, shift, odd numbers (1,3,5,7,9), and backspace. If I pressed them, nothing happened. The remaining keys were completely fine.

I did a virus scan with AVG, it found a virus (I did not note the name unfortunately), and cleared it. My laptop went back to normal. I also scanned with Malwarebytes (nothing) and SuperAntiSpyware (found some tracking cookies, but it usually does).

A week later, when I was writing my report and checking my sources (same websites) the keyboard issue occurred again. This time AVG didn't find anything. I changed to Avira which found two files infected with Pidief.ME.3 and 4, but after clearing them I still had the keyboard issue. After lots of attempts to fix it including reinstalling the keyboard drivers and restoring to an earlier restore point, it went mostly back to normal. The issue still occurred sometimes but only for a few seconds before recovering back to normal. The virus scanners continued to be clear. It was like this for about a week.

Yesterday, the issue returned to the point where the keyboard was unusable. The processing is also very slow when the keyboard issue is occurring. I hadn't visited any of the websites I had previously so now I am confused about whether it is a virus, some damage caused b... Read more

Last month, when typing, the cursor would suddenly disappear (and the window would become 'unselected') after typing a few characters in any application, MSWord, email, etc., -- and, I must click the screen to get the cursor to return. Also, I was getting an iexplorer.exe error when I initially booted up the system and tried to open up My Documents or My Computer (I'm still running Windows 2000) and the Recover the Active Desktop screen would pop up. I also got the iexplorer.exe dll initialization failed message and it would take several attempts to shut down the computer.

At first, I thought it was a keyboard problem -- and I planned to just reformat. But, some buddies suggested that it may be a malware problem. I did run some scans (found 63 + 26 problems, yikes!).

The initial iexplorer.exe error and the Recover the Active Desktop problem in the beginning have been fixed. The iexplorer.exe dll initialization failed message stayed on for awhile and I had to try to "shutdown" about 3 or so times before the message disappears and the computer shuts down -- but now, it's much better too.

The cursor problem persists, however. It's much better, however, and I can type more characters before the cursor disappears. I've also tried reinstalling the mouse driver.

Does anyone see anything in the Hijack log? Any suggestions?

Would it fix things if I reformat?

I'd appreciate your kind help! Thanks!

Hi y'all,

Gosh, I know that you're super busy -- but I'd appreciate your kind advice.

About 2.5 weeks ago, when typing, the cursor would suddenly disappear after typing a few characters in any application, MSWord, etc., (and this forum, too!) -- and, I must click the screen to get the cursor to return. I was also getting a iexplorer.exe error when I initially booted up the system and tried to open up My Documents or My Computer (I'm still running Windows 2000) and the Recover the Active Desktop screen would pop up. About a week or so ago, I got the iexplorer.exe dll initialization failed message and then, after a few days, it would take several attempts to shut down the computer.

At first, I thought it was a keyboard problem -- and I planned to just reformat. Some friends rec a virus or worm scan so I did (found 63 + 26 problems, yikes!).

The cursor problem is better, but it's still there (I can type more characters before it disappears). The initial iexplorer.exe error and the Recover the Active Desktop problem in the beginning is fixed. But, I still have the iexplorer.exe dll initialization failed message when I try to shutdown and I must shutdown about 3 or so times before the message disappears and the computer shuts down.

Can you see anything interesting? Any suggestions? Would it fix things if I reformat?

Hm, I noticed the wierd last line of liyunfei - should I delete it via hijack?

I'd appreciate your kind help! Thanks!

Hi guys, i've got an issue where my mouse and keyboard are not working at all. They are both ps/2 versions.

I have restarted many times, and i am also unable to carry out a system restore for some reason.

Under device manager there is a yellow exclamation mark under mouse and keyboard devices. They both give the following message:

A driver (service) for this device has been disabled. An alternate driver may be providing this functionality. (Code 32)

I have tried uninstalling, and then installing drivers again, but no luck.

I scanned for several malware spyware issues, and i did remove a lot using various tools mentioned on some threads.

I have used the following tools:

Spybot search and destroy

Malwarebytes Anti Malware

Combofix

ESET Nod32 Antivirus

Online Kaspersky scanner
A few threads mentioned enabling the option through regedit, particularly the kbclass to be set to 1. I have made these changes, but did not work.

Haven't used hijackthis before, so i guess i'll need to use that ...

At the moment i am remotely connected to the computer facing the problem, and the mouse/keyboard works fine using the remote pc.

Please could you advise on what i should do....

After malware attack, Windows boots but mouse and keyboard do not work.

Is there any way to repair Windows, rather than re-installing?

Thank you.

Answer:after malware attack, mouse and keyboard don't work

Have you tried going to Device manager, looking for the keyboard and mouse.......right click and uninstall both of them....then reboot ?

hi, first of all apologies for the lack of capital letters - it is connected to my problem.

a few days ago my pc started to act as if my 0 key was jammed in, adding a constant stream of zeros into any text input field i clicked on. i immediately assumed this was infact a stuck key so checked that out with no joy. i then tried unplugging the keyboard and rebooting using the virtual keyboard, but this gave me the same issue. i have found however that a reboot seems to clear the issue for about 10 minutes, but then it returns. therefore i have assumed this points to a software issue and as it kicks in after a successful period i wondered if there was some kind of malware doing strange things to my pc

when i press the numberlock key the zero's stop, so this is related only to the number pad. now i would be happy not to use the number pad, but as pressing shift and the zero on the number pad causes the system to paste anythin i have in my clipboard, i also have to stop using shift - hence no capitals - this is not feasible so i looked around for help.

first suggestions were running virus scans, which picked up a few unrelated issues but nothing else - i tried avg free, prevx csi and kaspersky 8.

any ideas if this is some form of infection ?

Hi,

2 months ago, my home laptop got infected with a nasty little piece of malware. I could not login to windows (neither regular nor safe mode), since both the keyboard and the trackpad were disabled. Keyboard worked fine on Bios menu, but was somehow disabled when Windows booted.

An IT guy helped me bypass the windows login screen with some weird software. But once inside we were unable to re-activate the keyboard and trackpad (we could use an external mousse though). Avast Antivirus was also not working. We noticed a couple of unfamiliar folders in the C:\ drive that we could not remove, even with Admin privileges. We were only able to rename them, they are now the following: C:\found.001k and C:\found.002j.

I booted the computer with an Avast Rescue USB, and it detected 1547 infected files, but the log did not mention any specifics. Avast could not clean the files, so all of them had to be deleted.

Next time I booted Windows I could fix the keyboard and trackpad drivers, and successfully re-installed Avast. I ran Avast boot-time Scan and it found the following:

File: C:\Program Files (x86)\Free Empty Folder Delete\unins000.dat is infected by Win32:Bundlore-E [PUP]

The file could not be fixed, so it had to be moved to the chest.

It is worth mentioning that I have no recollection of downloading this "Free Empty Folder Delete" program. Moreover, I am not sure how the infection occurred in the first place, since I do not recall visiting any risk... Read more

Good afternoon, I have an issue that I have ran into that I can't seem to resolve. The pc is a Compaq Presario 2100 laptop with Win XP SP2 installed, and I will list events to the best of my memory. First this is my niece's pc and was originally asked to repair the dc power jack on it. Once done with that I booted the pc and instantly knew it had a (several) virus on it. I tried doing a Trend Micro online scan but was unsuccessful, but did download the scanner and removed several viruses. I also used Bit Defender, Avast, and Moonav. I have removed all of the viruses, and the system checked clean. Then I ran Malwarebyte and it came up with a few more issues which was successfully resolved. I also am running Spybot Search and Destroy and there appears to be nothing causing problems.

Now I have a new issue. About every other time that the pc boots the keyboard will only function till windows is finished loading and the touchpad won't function. The other time the system boots and both keyboard and touchpad work normally. I deleted all of the touchpad drivers and tried re-installing the latest Synaptics drivers and it didn't make a difference. In the control panel hardware device manager it shows the touchpad as a ps/2 mouse with a yellow exclamation mark instead of the Synaptics pad. It gives an error code of Code 10 Device failed to start. Thinking it was a hard drive issue, i renamed all of the driver files to .bak, thus leaving them in place, and reinst... Read more

No access the the windows install disk, looking in my computer all my drives still have gigs used up but when clicked on they all appear empty, same with my start button list, and desktop. All blank.

I can't uninstall limewire because I can't access it.

Running only Avast! to the best of my knowledge.

Windows defender says I have "Trojan:Win32/Hiloti.gen!D" but I don't want to touch it because malware masking as windows defender is what got me into this mess.

Could not zip Attach, option was not available.

I suspect its one or the other. I've noticed its activity when I try to play a game after some time it would stop me from using any of my keys and just make me unable to type. I restart my computer and suddenly it would work once more.

note I have formatted my SSD and HDD and it still comes up, I tried using killdisk and it still pops up.

Answer:Supected virus or malware effecting keyboard usage

Hello PhrostElk and welcome to Seven Forums.

When did this problem first appear? Have you run full scans with your anti-virus of choice? Any malware detected?

Have you tried using a different keyboard? Same results?

When did you format your SSD and HDD? I noticed from your attach.txt log that you have a restore point dated 9/22/14. If you formatted after that date then this restore point would have been wiped from the disk. Have you tried restoring your computer to a date/time prior to when the keyboard problem first appeared?

I posted this on the External Hardware forum but did not receive any responses in two days so I'm hoping someone here can help. I am running Vista Home Premium.

After 2 days I believe I've finally removed the infections off of my computer but am still facing a problem where the external keyboard no longer works (I'm using the on screen keyboard for now). Ths has been the case both in normalmode and safe mode. Doing some initial research, similar threads suggested looking into the registry editor for the Upper Filter for key 4D36E96B-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318- for reference I'm looking at this thread: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic278884.html. The only value data I see there is 'kbdclass'. I'm not sure what one would expect to see here, so any further help/suggestions are greatly appreciated. If there is other diagnostic info I can provide please let me know.

Answer:Keyboard not working after virus/malware - registry info included

For anyone experiencing this same issue, I actually got it back in working order by uninstalling the driver in Device Manager, scanning for new hardware (so that it recognized the keyboard) and then restarting. I was hesistant about trying this but figured I didn't have much to lose since the keyboard wasn't working anyway. Here are the steps I took:

1. Accessed Control Panel -> Device Manager.
2. Found the Keyboard entry in the list and expanded it.
3. Right-clicked the actual keyboard and selected Properties.
4. Clicked the Driver tab.
5. On the Driver tab, clicked Uninstall. Once the Uninstall completed (it took mine about 5-10 seconds) the Driver list on the Device Manager screen refreshed and I no longer saw a Keyboard entry.
6. On the Device Manager screen, selected Action -> Scan for New Hardware. After a few seconds I saw the Keyboard entry re-appear.
7. Restart computer. At that point everything was back to normal.

Guess I have got some Virus or Malware as today a number of different problems started with my PC.Firstly the keyboard stopped working, the message in Device Drivers was "Windows cannot load device driver and there is a previous instance of it still in memory (code 38)" - I managed to fix this by uninstalling then reinstalling the keyboard driver but it stopped working again about an hour later. Obviously I fixed it again to be able to type this. Then new browser windows started opening up automatically (firefox) - one directed me to a site called theclickcheck.com via various other forwarding sites. Another tried to open a PDF file: the_compelling_case_for_conferencing.pdf don't know what the hell that is but shut it down straight away.I ran Superantispyware and Antivir which found nothing. I also tried to run Kaspersky online but this would not run nor would Trend Micro Housecall (they both failed at the final stage of definition download).I opened IE to search for what these problems might be and when I clicked on any of the google results i was redirected off to weird pages that had URLs totally unconnected to what I selected.really hope someone can help, thanks in advance.MCEDIT: 6th June - While using the PC this afternoon Antivir alerted me about RKIT/Bezopi.G in C:\WINDOWS\temp\rdl117.tmp I quarantined this. Here is the problem I have experienced for the on-screen keyboard (with or without tablet mode),
- When the on-screen keyboard comes up, the windows will not automatically resize to make way. The Keyboard will end up covering the window. (In Windows 8.1, all windows will resize.) (In Windows 10, only Store App and Microsoft Edge knows how to resize.)
Any thoughts?

Ok so I'm working with Windows 7.
My key board has compleatly stopped working. Even pressing esc. On the start up menu a work.
My usb keyboard is not working either, but the numbs lock light still comes on indicating it's getting power.
My on-screen keyboard will only bring up shortcuts in my chrome browser. The Ctrl and number lock keys are highlighted and won't let me turn them off.
I have removed my keys off the laptop and none of them seem to be stuck. I have also uninstalled and reinstalled the keyboard drivers. Held power button for 15 seconds to reset the laptop. And in my settings turned off the sticky keys.
I'm at a loss now, any new ideas would be great, thanks in advance

Hi all. I have already posted this once here. The topic had quite a few views and not a single reply. I'm giving this another try, as the problem persists and is not getting any better.

The keyboard on my Aurora m9700 is having some strange issues. I cannot figure if it is software or hardware related, either. At random intervals, the keyboard will cease function. But when I go into standby, then come out of standby the problem seems to be magically fixed! In fact, the problem just happened right after I finished typing the last sentence. I checked event manager, nothing changed. I had to go into standby and come out of it...

So please, is there anyone on here that can help me out? I have reformatted the computer since this started happening and nothing has changed, so I do not know what could possibly be causing this!

Answer:Weird keyboard laptop issue. Keyboard randomly stops functioning until I standby.

Just going to keep bumping this until I get a reply, or bet banned. Every thread has some form of reply...maybe I smell or something?

Hi, I bought a Lenovo Essential G580 on 15th May 2013. Everything was working perfectly until yesterday when my keyboard started to type random characters. I had just put my laptop to sleep on the night of 20th July 2013 and when I switched on the laptop on the evening of 21st July 2013 the keyboard started typing random stuff. There has been no spillage on the laptop as its safely covered on my table and I am the only one living in my room. Also to make sure its not because of a software glitch, I tried the following: 1. Restarted the system multiple times2. Went to an earlier System restore point. (Tried 5 different one's)3. Refreshed the system4. Took a backup and Formatted the whole hard disk and reinstalled Windows.5. Switched off the laptop for the night and tried switching it on today morning. None of the above helped. So obviously it is not a software problem. Hello

I have bought a brand new Toshiba NB100.
Because of th size of the keybord (and the strange choice of grey colored letters on the keyboard) I bought an external keyboard as well.
My language settings is norwegian, but the extern keyboard is US.
So I made it into Norwegian.

The problem is that now, whenever I am not using the external keyboard the embedded keyboard is a stranger to any language and has 'invented' it's own which means that I have to press the Fn-key to be able to access normal letters and the number zero.

I have tried to delete the keyboard drivers and retart in a hope to get back to the original settings but to no avail.

Hope somebody can help me.

Answer:NB100: internal keyboard issue after changing language on external keyboard

I am not sure but have you tried turning off / on FN+ F11 ?

Or maybe checking control panel > regional and language options > regional options tab or languages tab ?

Try various settings.

Dear all, first a bigh thank you for reading this, i am sorry that my first post in the forum is a cry for help.Had a ThinkPad Edge with windows 7 for a couple of months, and up until a week ago everthing was perfectly dandy. From then on, i experience very randomly (sometimes every 2 minutes, when i watch a movie not at all) occuring interludes of varying lenght during which my touchpad slows down a bit (while the external mouse is fined) and the computer stops registering key board strokes while pressing the mute, volume controll, mike controll and camera controll buttons above the number keys randomly. To round things up, direct links arent followed in mozilla anymore but the html is saved to my desktop and my system recovery points have disapeared (no idea if that is conencted thou). All very odd, and i have no idea where to start troubleshooting. Since i am currently working in cambodia, sending the thing in isnt really an option, antivir doesnt find anything and tomorrow i will reinstall windows and spray insectspray on the keyboard in case i have an ant infestation. sadly, during the writing of this article my keyboard has ceased all communication with me and i'm writing from a friends mac. If any of you have brilliant ideas or need more information about my sustem and such, please reply. Thanks a lot, will now watch house, at least that still worksJake

I recently (w/in last 2 weeks) purchased and received an E545 and after less than 8 hours of use the keyboard is extremely loose on the right hand side, primarily where the number pad sits but also extend into the right side of the alpha keyboard.  By losse, I mean that it doesn't sit well and when you press down on a key in that area of the keyboard, the entire right side of keyboard depresses.  ti's very disconcerting when typing and also extremely loud, which is an issue since I use the machine in meetings to take notes.

I've not seen much in searching, except for threads that are several years old.  I wanted to get some user input before contacting Lenovo, as I'm sure it will be better advice and less of a hassle.

Many thanks in advance for any help.

Answer:E545 keyboard problem - many keys not working - loose keyboard cable

Hi,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m sorry to hear that the entire keyboard of your Lenovo ThinkPad E545 depresses on key presses.

From what you have posted, it sounds like a keyboard flex. Keyboard flexing occurs if the board supporting the keys is not rigid or if the design of the keyboard is faulty. For good keyboards, the effect shouldn't be noticeable.

If you feel excessive flexing in your keyboard, try to reseat the keyboard. Since your system is under warranty, I would strongly suggest you to take assistance from Lenovo technical support.

Click here to open a link where you can select the country and get the exact contact support number. I?m sure they will be a great help.

Best Regards,
Mithun.

Windows 10
Start - Settings - Ease of Access - Keyboard

Everything here is off. If i turn on the On-Screen Keyboard no keys are Highlighted (indicating they are depressed/stuck )
When I use the hard keyboard and sometimes even the onscreen keyboard its as if either Ctrl, Alt Win or something are pressed down as it just types shortcuts.
EG:

-H- typed into chrome browser address bar via onscreen keyboard types as normal
-H- typed into chrome browser address bar via hard keyboard brings up -Chrome://history- But now also on the onscreen keyboard Ctrl is Highlighted.
I click on the onscreen keyboard to deactivate the now highlighted Ctrl button and try again. Now things are different, as now both the onscreen keyboard and the hard keyboard both bring up ?Chrome://history- when -H- is typed ( Shift is not depressed )

This seems to randomly cycle one min onscreen keyboard works fine, next the keyboard works fine or they either work or none of the work rendering the computer useless.

I cant help feel it?s a software issue but im no pro and I don?t have an additional external keyboard to try but as the onscreen and hard keyboard work ok for a while sometimes I assume something is up and that?s what brought me here.

Hopefully this is clear enough to be understood and to help others who may have the same issue.

Thank you so much for your time.

Hello,I would like to purchase a UK keyboard for a W700ds. I am looking for one from an older generation laptop which does not suffer from the loud/hollow sounding keys, a 'feature' of the current keyboard. Can anybody give me the part number for a UK layout keyboard which will fit a W700ds without modification and does not suffer from the 'loud' keys? It would appear that using a keyboard from an older generation laptop is suitable solution to the loud/hollow sounding keys which many W700ds (and others) suffer from. Recommend checking this thread:
http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=58628

Usually the upgrade from a normal keyboard to backlit keyboard should not be a big problem if there is an additional connector on mainboard for such a backlit keyboard.
If such additional connector is not available, then you will NOT be able to use the backlight keyboard.

Dear Dell community,
the E7440/E7420 (and I think many others) has keyboards with (e.g. 04W6PV 08PP00) or without trackpoint (e.g. . RXKD2 0RXKD2)
Subsequently the upper mousebuttons (A12AN5) can/should be removed (which is possible).
However, then I would need another keyboard trim covering the space where the upper mousebuttons have been.
I haven't found any different keyboard trim than 29FWC 029FWC (the one with a recess for the upper mouse buttons). I also didn't find a "filler" for the upper mouse buttons.
A trackpoint-less keyboard can be installed in a laptop with the upper mouse buttons still in place, but it's rather tight and the mouse buttons cannot be pushed properly any more, so should be disconnected.
How do I properly convert a trackpoint-enabled laptop to a trackpoint-less one?
kind regards

Hey everyone! I just installed Star Wars Battlefront 2 on an Asus Vivotab 8 tablet running Windows 10 32 bit. It has a weird bug where the game will crash unless I have a keyboard plugged in through an otg cable or over bluetooth. Is there any way I could install a driver so it thinks I have a physical keyboard plugged in 24/7?

Also, if this is possible, is there anything similar I could install so it believes I have a mouse plugged in as well? Thanks!

Answer:Looking for virtual keyboard/mouse driver (Game won't open if keyboard not detected)

Tablets are not designed to play games.
That being said, you can get a Bluetooth Keyboard or you can get a M icro USB to Standard USB adapter and plug in a USB keyboard.

Hi! I've got Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13 Silver (https://www.alza.cz/EN/lenovo-ideapad-yoga-13-silver-d375124.htm), and while I am quite content with the device, my keyboard stopped working. I was wondering whether any of you might know and suggest an online reseller (official or otherwise), where I could get hold of a replacement keyboard. Now, I suppose backlit keyboard versions of newer Yoga laptops will not work I guess, will they? From what I have read Yoga 13 Silver does not have the slot required for backlit, but aside that, will the keyboard function and will it fit (dimension-wise)? If so, what is the voltage and current required? Would soldering a small battery to the backlit cable be a good idea (I accept the fact that I wouldn't be able to regulate it)? Thank you in advance!ck

I currently have an X60 and have never had a single issue.  However I was recently infected with a Trojan, and after removing it with a reputable program, the keyboard and trackpoint mouse have stopped working. When I get the windows login screen, the trackpoint works fine, but the second I press any key, both keyboard and mouse become totally frozen. I can still use a USB keyboard and mouse with no issue at, but that is the only way. Any ideas as to how I can get them back up and working? Clearly, they (at least the mouse) are not totally fried b/c it works fine before I touch the keyboard. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, JT

I recently got rid of a cabled keyboard in favor of a smaller bluetooth keyboard (MS Mobile 6000). Everything is great except that now, I have a hard time putting my PC to sleep. In fact, it tends to wake up after 30 seconds or so. I'm pretty sure this is due to the BT keyboard.

Would anyone please share the solution to this?

Answer:Replaced wired keyboard with Bluetooth keyboard. PC no longer sleeps..

Well, you can load Device Manager (search for device to see link) and then right-click the keyboard and select Properties. Click the Power Management tab and uncheck the box "Allow this device to wake the computer". This should fix the problem.

Hey all, I've recently (3 weeks ago orsomething) bought a new laptop, a Toshiba Satellite l670-143.
Windows 7 64bit
Intel? Core? i5-430M Processor
: 2.26 / 2.53 Turbo GHz
2nd level cache : 3 MB
4,096 (2,048 + 2,048) MB ram
ATI Mobility Radeon? HD 5650

But this last week ive been experiencing keyboard problems. The problem is not always present, but when its present it doesnt matter wether im gaming, browsing the internet or writing a document.
Im not 100% sure what the problem is, I've spent hours trying to figure it out and to fix it, but nothing seems to help. But when I press a P, I sometimes get ppp. Or when I press a P, it doesnt show up. This is with all keys. And especially when I'm typing fast. Also, when I hold the backspace button, it ''lags(for a split second)'' every 2 seconds orso. When the problem is not present, holding the backspace button is smooth.

I did loads of virusscans, and did all the registercleanups etc. I made sure that sticky keys and filterkeys are disabled. I checked all the drivers for updates. When i tried the http://keyliner.blogspot.com/2009/11/windows-7-slow-keyboard-response.html nr.1 fix, it did go away when I rebooted. but the next day the problem came back and when I redid it, (did what he said + delete the file and create it again) it didnt fix the problem. Perhaps it was just random luck, I dont know. I disabled the laptop battery to see if it went better, it didnt.
I'm not sure what else ive tried too..

Answer:Satellite L670-143 - Keyboard lags but external keyboard work

Hello

To be honest if an external keyboard works properly I think it?s a hardware malfunction and related to internal keyboard. I doubt it?s a virus or something else because the same error would happen on external keyboard as well.

Furthermore for keyboard there is no special driver, it?s a part of Windows so you can?t update the keyboard driver.

Now in your case I would contact nearest authorized service provider. Your notebook is only 3 weeks old so it?s under warranty. If you contact the ASP, they can check the notebook and if you need a new keyboard, the repair is for free. :)

As I wrote in the title, my Shift and Alt keys stopped working for keyboard shortcuts. However, the Shift key still works when capitalizing letters.

I've been dealing with this problem off/on for the past two weeks and haven't been able to figure it out. I've gone into Ease of Access features and turned on/off all of the available options (Mouse Keys, Sticky Keys, Toggle Keys, Filter Keys). I've pressed Shift for 8 seconds, and pressed it 5 times, and still haven't been able to correct it.

Thank you in advance for any help offered.

Possibly helpful additional information:
I've got a Spanish/Latin American keyboard layout installed in addition to the US English keyboard layout. I toggle back and forth with Left Alt + Shift (which is how I noticed my Shift key stopped working).
I play a game whose controls rely on a lot of Shift key pressing and holding.

When was the last time you used a can of air cleaner on the keyboard? If it isn't from contact wear often keyboards tend to get loaded up with dust and debris!

One example of that is having any snacks onhand around a pc where little bits get passed along from your fingers onto and under the keys themselves. Keyboards are known to get loaded up fast with any foods present!

Hi,

I have a user with a Tecra M2 whose keyboard is no longer functioning properly, 2 or 3 keys work (Enter, space, caps lock), the rest of them when pressed cause a very quiet "beep" noise to come from the laptop.

I assumed this keyboard was faulty - I attached a usb keyboard to the laptop, but this has exactly the same symptoms, they keys dont work and when pressed the beep noise comes from the laptop, no characters appear on screen.

The laptop boots to the Windows XP login screen fine.

Any ideas what has caused this, and what the solution would be?

Thanks

Answer:M2 Keyboard problem - attaching external keyboard doesn't work either

Hello,

Sounds to me like the keyboard controller on the motherboard has gone bad. Since it causes the defect on an external keyboard then your motherboard is bad. If it was only the keyboard then an external one would work fine. But all keyboard types connected to a portable are routed first through the Keyboard controller integrated on the motherboard, then the characters are displayed. When this goes bad no keyboard will work, not even an external one. And the only fix to this is replacing the motherboard. Hope this helps.

I have a Tecra A3 and are using it with a Microsoft Comfort keyboard. The problem is that ever since the keyboard drivers have been installed the function keys (i.e. Fn + F2 to change power mode) now carry out additional funcitons i.e Fn + F2 also brings up the My Pictures folder. The strangest on is turning the wirelss network card on or off with the switch on the front of the notebook. This has the additional effect of loading an extra copy of MS Outlook each time it is swithed.
I have the latest version of Microsoft IntelliType Pro (version 5.20.412.0)

Any idea on how to solve this?

Answer:Tecra A3 Keyboard Function keys and Microsoft Comfort Keyboard

Hi

Sorry but you have not explained do you have this problem now using notebook keyboard or external one.

If the problem persists using an external one I think that you can not use Toshiba FN+FX key combinations. Every external keyboard is specific one and in my opinion you should check user?s manuals and check also all additional functions. I am also pretty sure that you are able to configure some special keys on your own.

The issue with WLAN switcher is very strange. Try to remove Microsoft specific software and check if the functionality is like before.

This is completely bewildering. Booted my work notebook, entered without any issue my Truecrypt bootloader password. After that, made myself a coffee, came back 10 minutes later and suddenly, most keys fail. Some, if I press 2 or 3 times, they come on screen. Others, not even that. Was not able to login to Windows, it is that bad. After that, removed the battery, rebooted. Same issue, now I'm not even able to pass the disk encryption software authentication. Weird thing is that all letter keys work if you press shift. No biggie, I have a USB wireless keyboard, I'll take the notebook for repairs at the office tomorrow. SAME ISSUE. Never saw anything like this, how can the USB wireless keyboard also fail? I'm not still under the OS, were a configuration might cause this issue things up.Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have a meeting soon that I need to prepare for. And can't go to the office now, won't make it.

I upgraded from Windows 8.1 (and I never had this problem), to Windows 10 and I noticing that my keyboard would stop responding in windows explorer, calculator, search, etc. The keyboard had no issues working in a browser like Chrome, but it wouldn't respond in something like Adobe Premiere Pro.

To clarify - the keyboard works fine initially when I restart my computer. And then randomly, it decides not to work in explorer. That's when I start testing various applications to see if it works. What I found was that Adobe CC programs, windows explorer and anything native to Windows (programs such as calculator, search, etc.) doesn't respond to keyboard inputs.

But it gets more confusing - my keyboard still works fine. For example, if I hold down, ctrl+shift+esc, Task Manager does show up. If I hit the calculator shortcut on my keyboard, calculator does come. If I toggle Caps Lock, the little notification appears on my screen telling me that Caps Lock is on or off.

Within Chrome, the biggest issue I found was if I use the period in the numeric keypad side, it acts as "delete" instead of a period, whereas the numbers all work perfectly (hitting '1' gives me '1', not 'end').

Hi everyone,

I accidentally messed up my keyboard settings in Excel 2010--I didn't notice the book sitting on the keyboard while working on something else on my desk--and can't figure out how to restore all of them to defaults in a blanket action. I fixed them one-by-one, but I can't figure out how to fix one last problem: I keep having the keytips pop up when the '/' key (no ALT or CTRL) is pressed. Can someone help me figure out how to return the normal function?

Hi there, I just took delivery of a new ThinkPad T420s which was shipped to me express directly from the Lenovo factory in Kunshan, China.  One group of keys makes a very distinct, loud noise versus the rest of the keys: the DELETE, HOME, END, PGUP, PGDN group.  I'm very familiar with ThinkPad keyboards (I am writing this on a T410s).   When I press one the keys in the group, there is a very noticeable clunking sound coming from underneath them.  The keys do work, but it is a horrible sound compared to the rest of the keys on the keyboard.  My T410s does nothing like this, and I just configured three other T420s systems for other people a few weeks ago and I don't recall them exhibiting this kind of sound. Has anyone else noticed this on the T420s?  Should I be returning this system or arranging on on-site service call to have it looked at?

While in laptop mode, and typing on the built-in physical keyboard or a keyboard attached via USB, the on-screen keyboard will randomly pop up, taking away focus (particularly noticeable when using extended desktop on an external display) and eating up half of the screen real estate.  As soon as I press the next key on the physical board, the on-screen keyboard minimizes itself.  Sometimes it will pop up when I'm not even touching the laptop! Anyone else experience this and/or know how to stop it?  It's the only thing about this machine that drives me absolutely nuts.  It seems to be random.  I can't pin it down and haven't found any similar reports via Google search. Thanks in advance.

Mine is doing the same thing and your post is the only thing I can find on the interwebs. Hmmm. I feel like I'm overlooking some feature that the cameral is involved with. I can't quite figure the trigger. It's almost like when I take my hands away from the keyboard or something.

Hello,

I realized yesterday that my keyboard/touchpad stopped working. Windows is also not detecting the battery in the, lets call all of it, "Click"(Keyboard and so on).
So basically the whole Click(including USB and Cardreader) is not working. The Notebook is only 4 Weeks old, so basically unused, hasn't been in extreme conditions, or took damage.
My first suggestion was that it was related to a recent Windows 10 update. I removed the Update, but it is still not working. Until now Windows 10 was working properly.

Any suggestions, is it Software or Hardware related?
I would go with Hardware(because detecting the Second Battery should not be based on Software), so a case for the Warranty, right?

Thanks in advance and greetings

Hi, I inadvertently pressed something on my ThinkPad keyboard and it's now not typing what I expect to see. The language is set in the control panel to English UK and this hasn't been affected. However most of the letter keys are now acting as keyboard shortcuts. In Word 2010 this is what happens: 4 = ?e = ?r = registered symbolt = trademark symboly = puts cursor to beginning of linei = opens File menuo = puts document in outline viewa = s = triggers split screend = enters a bookmarkf = enters a footnotel = starts a numbered listc = copyright symbolv = opens paste special dialog box I've obviously trigger some keyboard shortcut to change the settings but have no idea how. Need to reset this asap as it's my work laptop - IT team not able to help as I'm not on the company network and can't log on as my password can't be typed in accurately... Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Hello, I am running LenovoX260 with Windows 7, I additional installed the lenovo updatecenter. All drivers are updated according to lenovo7 update center. Symptom: Basically, when the machine boots on battery all keyboard strokes are delayed for roughly 5 seconds or an easy touch of touchpad or trackpoint -- whatever comes first. The machine has not a high load at this time and no keystroke is lost. It is just delayed strongly. To make it more complicate, this symptom disappears until next reboot when I lock the screen with win+l and reunlock the screen with my password. It also disappears when I plugin the powerplug, but it also reappears when I unplug it again on the login screen. Once I relogged/unlocked this effect does not reappear. Booting with power plugged in is fine. Any ideas?

I bought this awesome, lovely and exquisite piece of technology innovation in August 2014.I have come to India and everyone loves it.Everything was fine until the last Saturday morning when I was typing an email. I got on a phone call for a while and it went in sleep mode. Pretty normal. I concluded the call and touched the space bar expecting the normal, quick wake up and the login screen. The login screen came up alright, but the password box was already filled. I tried to use backspace to clear the box and I missed a heartbeat! Nothing seemed to happen. So I force shut it holding the power button and after a minute bring it up again. Same scene! This has continued. I am going to be in India for a few months. So I checked with Lenovo service centers calling them. And I learn this model is not supported in India. My warrantee is valid, but of no use!I go to a local dealer, to no avail. I have lost my primary way of communication. Difficult to live this way. Right? SO I buy a toolset (expensive!), open the back cover and disconnect the keyboard cable. I put the cover back and start using it as a tablet only.It is serving me for now, but cant do this for long. What may be wrong? My friend is travelling to the US (San Jose) in a couple of weeks. Should I send it with him? Will Lenovo give me a replacement keyboard or whatever part? I have been a computer professional for 30+ years and used more than 6 laptops so far. Had bought this from my heart. Hate to see i... Read more

Answer:Yoga 2 Pro Keyboard continuously floods characters in the keyboard buffer

I have this same problem but with my Y510p. It floods the 'Q' character.

The only solution which seems possible is a keyboard replacement (unless the connecting port is damaged, which is highly unlikely). I have ordered a keyboard and it is on the way.

As for your scenario, I would say that if you friend is going to be in US for more than 2 months then it is fine to send it with him for repairs. You could also order a keyboard online and replace it yourself (I ordered on ebay).
Check your manual on lenovo website for supported keyboard part number.

Tip -
To disable a malfunctioning keyboard like yours, you can either disconnect it physically (like you did)
OR
You can go into Control Panel > Device Manager > Keyboards
Select the laptop keyboard and manually install a wrong keyboard driver.
This way the keyboard wont be recognized and wont work.

Dear Community, I am proud owner of a T420 laptop. Unfortunately the keyboard has stopped working properly. When I type:g it writes g5h it types h6 Probably that happens because I spilled water over my keyboard once, though I didnt experience any issues directly after that. Now I connected an external keyboard and everything works fine. Still for me the questions remain:-should I exchange the keyboardor-the motherboardand-how do I do that, is it possible as an amateur? Thank you so much guys! Kevin

Hi guys, Something really strange started happening two days ago. Out of the blue the following keys stopped working: GHBackspaceWindows Key@' The laptop is a couple of years old and a bit dusty, so I took it to the local shop to get the keyboard replaced and cleaned. Seemed to be working fine when I left the shop. Then, a little while ago the space key and P stopped. Five minutes later they started working again but ctrl stopped and N is temperamental. I haven't spilt anything on it or knocked it. Any ideas what's going on?

Hi, I do a lot of typing at night time and the click of my keyoard's keys can be quite noticeable when there is pure silence. I have a Logitech K520 which isn't so loud but I would really love a keyboard that has the same type of keys as my Samsung laptop which are practically silent. Most laptops I've tried have similar keyboards in that the key doesn't travel far at all and there is no 'clicky' sounds either.

I have no idea what I would search for as I don't know what the style of keyboard is called. There are various names on the market, 'soft touch', 'quiet touch', 'low profile' etc etc but nothing that specifically identifies a laptop style.

I would just like a wireless laptop keyboard basically, even if it's the same size as a laptop keyboard but preferrably full sized.

Thanks very much for any advice

I want to remove the monitor, basically gut it, and turn the keyboard and trackpad of my laptop into a keyboard with built-in mouse for my desktop. It's an old laptop that I was thinking about throwing away anyway, so I might as well turn it into something useful.

look at attachment.

I want be able to connect that to my desktop with USB and be able to use it as both keyboard and mouse (have both the keyboard and trackpad work)

My desktop is right next to my bed, so I sometimes swing the monitor around and put the keyboard and mouse on the bed. But it's damn hard to use a mouse when you have bedsheets and blankets and other stuff that's soft as a surface.

Also, I can't have any compatibility problems, it needs to work with all 3 systems in my house that I may want to connect it to. Mac OS, Windows XP/Vista, and Linux (Ubuntu and Fedora)

would anyone happen to know, and can give me a step-by-step?

I have a Dell M1330 Laptop that has served me quite well for several years. I just replaced the keyboard the other day and everything is working fine, except that the new keyboard has a slightly different layout than the old keyboard did. For example, with the new keyboard all the F1, F2, F3, etc.. keys have function secondaries on them like multimedia, brightness, antennae toggle, and so on. My old keyboard didnt have most of these and so when I attempt to use them on the new keyboard they simply do not work. In fact when I use function keys as if I still had my old keyboard installed the functions work, which means it is the software interpretation of the keys that I need to change. Does anybody know how I can fix this so that the keys of the new keyboard and functions match what the keys actually say?

Another thing to add is that some of the new function keys on the new laptop such as antennae toggle were not on my last keyboard at all because they are softkeys on the case of my computer, and I am not sure a function like that would be able to be added to the keyboard mapping at all, but I'm not sure.

Also, I would prefer to not install third party software to accomplish this, even if it means I need to delve into the registry manually. Can anybody help??

My husbands ASUS touch screen laptop-keyboards are not working. I know it has windows 8. Core i3 intel inside. Like I said it is a touchscreen and neither the hardware keyboard or touch screen keyboard will do any thing (well it is like the computer understands i am doing something with the keyboard, but not typing. Ex. i will type and the curser line will do nothing but suddenly go like an italicized line. The mouse works and the touch screen works but I cannot type anything. I have wiggled the keys thinking maybe something is stuck but no help. also I have restored it to its factory settings thinking maybe he accidentally set some keyboard sleep command or something. We are both not smart at this, and again it is not my computer, he has it for work, so who knows what he did to it. But yeah, after restore it still wouldn't work and now I am stuck at the registration "getting started" windows and I cannot bypass them....or don't know how to without being about to type. The last it worked he said he cleaned it with pressurized air, so I don't know if that was too much for the keys...if he actually blew dirt into it, or what strange thing could have happened...but the fact that both touch screen and actual keyboard aren't working I am left stumped. I hope I gave enough information on the computer. It has that surface windows...he normally just uses the desk top mode. Ok thank you for any advice.

Current model specs do not offer a backlit keyboard. However, the keyboard is same size/dimensions as other models that have the backlit keyboard. Does the Yoga have power feed for the backlit cable?  Is it a single cable (power and data) or the usual two cable type (one for power, one for data)? I can find replacement backlit boards, but don't want to spend the money if I can't get it to work. Compatible models with backlit KB:Ideapad Y series models Y400 & Y480Ideapad Z series models Z400 & Z500

So I have a Y570, replaced the thermal paste. After replacing it , the screw for the keyboard dosen't thighten up and is stuck spinning. Tried almost forever to spin that screw but it won't tighten up. I tried removing it but it won't come out too... Gave up then booted on my laptop. After booting it on, I noticed that my keyboard won't work. I checked the device manager if it can detect my keyboard and it says it does. Anyone have any idea how to fix this? Right before I replaced the thermal paste it was working just fine. Tried taking out that screw also but it won't just come off. Hardware problem or software?

I recently purchased a great W530, and love it a lot.  It did not come with a backlit keyboard so I purchased one off ebay.  I know the keyboard works as I tried with on my x230.  Anway when on my W530 the fn space bar did not turn on the keyboard.  I went into the bios to the keyboard/mouse section and noticed there was no option to chose the fn toggle form light to keyboard or both.  I updated the bios to the newest version for the W530 and there still is no option to toggle the backlight on in the bios.  Does my version just not support this, is there a way to unlock this function in the bios?

Hi. I just downloaded software for a keyboard and mouse from Kensington on my new Dell XPS 210 computer. I got a message to reboot the computer, so turned it off and back on. When it came on the USB keyboard and mouse no longer worked. I unplugged them and plugged in the USB connector and new mouse and key board. They don't work either. I couldn't shut down normally, so pushed the start button, waited and turned it on again. The keyboard and mouse still dont work. I get a message saying that the devices are not functioning. My question: How do I fix this problem WITHOUT a keyboard or mouse>Everything I've seen says to point to this, click this, or type in this..how do I do this without a keyboard? Or Mouse?I've retried the USB keyboard and mouse and neither work.I'm getting worried as my logic tells me there is a big problem now!I went on the kensington website (on my old computer) and it says, DO NOT DOWNLOAD Software on VISTA - the keyboard and mouse work without it. There is no further information - I wish I'd known this before I downloaded the software.Any advice would be most appreciated. I'm not an expert - just a person who tries to find solutions and learn. Thanks so much.

Answer:HELP! Downloaded software for wireless keyboard and now NO KEYBOARD or MOUSE!

wait, so you're saying you're running vista?also, what do you mean by "software" for your keyboard and mouse? do you mean a driver?if so, i'm not sure about vista, but you can try rolling back the drivers by going to device manager, and selecting the device you want.do this by :right click on my computer>hardware>device manager

Is it possible to replace the keyboard on a W520 with an equivalent, backlit W530 keyboard?

Solved!

Answer:replace W520 keyboard with backlit W530 keyboard?

It is not possible to do a direct hardware replacement. The bezel is different and the scan codes for the keyboard (which are supported by the BIOS) are different on the keyboards.
