SSD in caddy - what can I do?

Question: SSD in caddy - what can I do?

I've got one lying around somewhere... the CD drive caddy... in which you add an SSD and replace your CD drive.

Dumb question: what can I do with this?
Can I have another copy of the Windows?
Can I have Linux and multiple boots?

Thanks

Answer: SSD in caddy - what can I do?

Sure.
Just wondering why not install the ssd as an internal drive without the caddy?

How to obtain the four screws that secure the caddy to the laptop body?
(Not the screws that keep the HDD inside the caddy.)
Does anyone know the specification for these screws, and where I can buy them?
Thanks in advance.

Hello to everybody!I have a HP Pavilion g6-1212sqand I would like to replace the optical drive with a HDD installed inside a caddy/or something similar. My difficulty is to find the right part on the market. I'm confusing because I saw that there is 12,7 mm size and 9,5 mm size. Is there someone that can help me indicating which of this two is good? Will be appreciated any suggestion also where I can buy it, I live in Romania. Thanks in advance to who will answer! Adrian S.

Hello,
I'm having problems with my WD blue 1TB HDD (which came originally with the laptop) being recognized using it in CD-ROM caddy.
I bought Dell Inspiron 17 5767 like a month ago, and of course I want to upgrade it with SSD (Samsung 850 EVO 256 GB), and then use original HDD instead of CD-ROM.
I already read the post: en.community.dell.com/.../19536697
I have Salcar caddy, which is proven good, already in previous 2 laptops, one HP and one Dell. Also the current one with this HDD was tested in older Dell and the disk is recognized and works superb. So from this I can conclude, the caddy and the disk are completely fine, something must be wrong on my new Dell side.
I upgraded BIOS (to 1.09), SATA and other drivers yesterday ... nothing changes.
The OS (on the SSD) is original as got from Dell, as the data was migrated with the Samsung utility from original HDD to SSD. Then HDD was formatted, currently has only one partition.
In BIOS I disabled Virtual machine and LAN boot settings, as they are not needed. Also, LPM is disabled, as suggested in other post. But still no change.
The HDD in caddy is not recognized in BIOS, nor Windows, nor Disk Management, nor CMD (diskpart).
I also tried to create smaller partition, about 850 GB, still not recognized. I didn't try with smaller than 750 GB, maybe should do this, but I don't believe this is a problem.
I bet there are other users out there with the same problems - did anyone got this worki... Read more

Or is there any news? Also I see recommondations for the 'Chinese' caddies but it seems despite the fact that they are 12.7mm they might still be lose. Question: Caddy

I need to transfer contents of an IDE hard-drive to a Sata machine. I have been told I need a caddy!. I confess I have no idea what this is.Would someone be kind enough to explain what I need and how to get it to work?.Many thanks

Answer:Caddy

This is a IDE caddy that you put your Hard Drive into. click hereThe Jumper on your Drive as to be set to Master for it to work, you then just plug it into a USB port for it to load. Do not just pull it out when you have done as this can damage the drive. In lower Task Bard near clock you will see a Icon with a Green arrow right click on this to safely remove. If you have problems shutting it down, power your PC down then remove the plug before restarting PC

Hi everyone, I recently purchased the Z50-70 laptop and so far I love it! I feel it could be a little bit faster with a solid state drive, however.  I have a 250GB 840 Evo I can throw in (with a caddy for the 1TB HDD that's already installed), but from what I've researched I can't have a 1TB HDD in the CD drive slot, but I'd rather not put the SSD there, because it wouldn't perform at full speed and would completely defeat the purpose of that drive.  I guess what I'm asking for is the maximum capacity the CD drive slot will allow for a HDD caddy? Thanks!Gage Henry

Question: 8.1 from hd caddy

Hello all,

So I find myself in an odd situation. I upgraded form xp to windows 8.1 on an old laptop I had. Since then, this laptops video card has started to go. So what I am looking to do is to take the hd from that pc, put it in a hardrive caddy, and boot from that on a different computer. For certain reasons I need to retain both OS's.

My question is this. How will Microsoft deal with the licensing in this situation. I attempted this and got a notification that I will need to reactivate windows, but does this count as a second pc in their eyes? Or can I make the call and just say that the hardware has changed.

another note, Ideally I would like to move between both computers without re licensing, but I'm assuming this might not be possible.

Question: M58 HDD Caddy

Hi, I want to fit a second HDD to an M58p small form factor (or whatever these small ones are called!) in place of the optical drive. I assume that Lenovo do a bracket kit for this, but I can't seem to find any part numbers etc... Anyone out there shed any light on this? Many Thanks, Mike

Answer:M58 HDD Caddy

Fitting a HDD into an optical drive bay can be accomplished with an inexpensive 3.5"--> 5.25" conversion kit available anywhere (Like the one HERE). I think Lenovo has a bracket for that but it would be really expensive. The hole for the optical drive can only be covered up by a blank bezel, that's going to be the tough part to find, if it is an issue for you at all.

Hello,I would like to ask for support with following issue. I bought new SSD HDD and wanted to use it as drive with system. So I removed the original HDD (with installed Windows 10 and more partitions) and installed the SSD. After that I installed OS Windows 10. This system works fine on the SSD. I placed my original HDD to a caddy and connected it instead of optical drive. I disabled booting from CD/DVD and USB in BIOS.  After restart, the drive was recognized in BIOS (displayed in boot order), but the laptop won't boot. It got stuck with HP logo and did not boot. I realized that when I disconnect the caddy, Windows boots from SSD. When I connect the caddy again, after a while hdd is visible in My Computer (all partitions, but without correct labels), but none of the partitions is accessible. I thought it can be because there is still instaled OS on the caddy drive. So I booted GParted from USB, removed all partitions and created one with NTFS. After that the drive is not visible in BIOS boot order, but if I connect it after Windows starts, I can see it in Disk Management.Because I'm lost with this issue, I tried some procedures with GParted and TestDisk which caused the drive was in RAW data format. Finally I removed the one partition in GParted and after boot, the drive is marked as Uninitialized and it asks me for initialize where  I can select MBR or GPT format. I tried GPT, but it failed because IO errors. My questions:1. is it even possible to ... Read more

I've just fitted a hard drive caddy and put 2nd hd in it.It has a sliding lock at the front which prevents the caddy from being removedand it also incoporates a power switch. The instuctions say the drive can be hot-swapped because releasing the lockcuts off the power supply to the disk in the caddy. If I do this with W98 runningis there likely to be a problem when I put the other disk in?My instinct is to switch the computer off before swapping drives. Any views / experiences on this please?CD

It is hot swappable,if you use software, but is it necessary?safer to swap when machine is off.Why risk losing your files.

Yes, I'm afraid you are missing something.
The games would need to be installed from the original disk onto her PC in order to run. She wouldn't be able to run MS Word from the disk-in-a-caddy either. If there are documents on that drive, they'd be openable, but would use the software installed on the host machine.

Hello, I received my P70, and I was surprise to see that the dvd isn't hotswapable like it was with my T510.  I can unscrew a screw, and change my dvd my a ssd caddy but there is one available ? When I bought the laptop, I asked for one.  They accepted my request and send one for me, but I received a Dummy caddy, it's even marked on it, DUMMY    (it's used probably to put a blank when we remove the DVD). I think that the right part is 00NY314, but I'm not sure.  Still 50$ US for that, is't a lot, it will be around 75$ CAN.  I need to be sure before I order that part. Can someone confirm that ?  With a picture will be nice, not that I don't trust Lenovo, but I received a dummy part, so...

Answer:P70 I it possible to hotswap dvd with a SSD caddy ?

While I can't speak directly to your question, It is clear that hot-swappability of this 4th drive is not a design feature of the P70.  It is a shame that the nod to manufacturing simplification (read: cost & maintenance requirements reduction) had eliminated a very useful feature. With my W700, I can and do swap-out the optical drive for an HDD often to make speedy backups or access archived data.  It is very convenient and helpful. Alas, some would argue that USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt attachment provides adequate support for these things -- I'd still prefer a unit with the easy swap option--a workstation is supposed to be all about power and flexibility.   By way of example, Samsung realized its design error in eliminating some features and re-introduced user-removable storage to its latest line of phones.

Hi, I bought a Z51 (as a christmas present for my mother).I have replaced the DVD RW with a caddy (I don't know if I can post the link here). I have set up a new SSD instead of the HDD, and installed the HDD into the caddy. I have been consistently able to boot from the original HDD (in the caddy), but only after a restart. (each time: first try, does not boot, does not appear in the boot menu. Then restart, and it works fine.) Windows 10 is now installed on the SSD and can perfectly boot (without the need of restarting), but the HDD appears neither in Windows nor in the BIOS. In fact, I have been able to mount it only once, after I launched the BIOS from the windows recovery options. Then it was recognized both in the bios and in the disk partition manager of windows 10. But I am not able to reproduce this. As this behaviour is quite strange, I was wondering if: it is a BIOS issue, a driver issue, or a caddy issue... Could you please provide me some advice ?

I have been considering a HD caddy for use on the SATA interface of my Z70 and saw some for sale. But all don't have an OEM fit and require using the Optical drive face. I don't see a release for the DVD drive when I flipped the notebook over either like my ThinkPad has w/Ultrabay. I am not sure if its even supported properly by the bios and do want to be able to used the DVD drive as well. So its not a permanent solution I am looking for. Despite have ONE USB 3.0 port I still fine it quite slow moving data to 3.0 flash drives I have bought. SATA is sata and works without a fuss as fast as the drives can cache it and write. I miss ESATA port not on this notebook. It was a must have when I was looking for a notebook before and the T520 has it all but very poor screen and sound is horrible even for voice via Skype as a business system its bad and not solution for  it.

Then I might be able to figure out how the Sata Optical drive is configured. SATA III or not.

Have you tried connecting it directly to your machine via SATA cable? Using another machine? It could also be a defective drive, I have experienced this in the past and it ended up being a defective HDD.

Hello guys,I've got a problem with my caddy (second) HDD in my g6.Before few days i did fresh new installation on brand new ssd (kingston v300 if it does it matter) with windows 10 on it (while installing my second HDD it wasn't in laptop). All seems perfectly fine, works well and so on....after that i decided to put my caddy hdd back in place (instead CDROM of course) and after boot it wasn't there, was unrecognizable from BIOS and from Windows.I tried with few methods to detect it :Computer Manage > Disk Managementfrom disk part in windows promptfrom Device Manager and still the same,it still unseeable.I decide a problem comes from my caddy and change with a new one (this time was with switch ,first one wasn't with it) and still the same - invisible caddy hdd. After that put hdd back in a main socket, and formatted it,try again and...nothing,try and swtich theirs places and still same.Use last version for BIOS and all drivers looks uptodate.Thanks.Best Regards

I am waiting for my new HDD drive to arrive for my laptop. The old drive is still working but not too reliable, but good enough for using as a temp storage device. If I put this old HDD into a USB caddy is it possible to copy all the data from this drive to the new drive including the Vista OS, enabling me to run Vista on the new HDD instead of the old drive. I have the recovery discs for the old drive but have been told these will not operate on the new HDD because I didn't purchase from the manufacturer. Any help appreciated.

Answer:USB Caddy to HDD copy

I never heard that a new drive would by design stop the old cd/dvd's from recovering the system. It may be that the disks simply use data on the drive that is hidden in a partition..Most new drives come with clone software. You put the new disk in the caddy and then clone it over. Then swap it. What is the best way to shut down a USB hard drive caddy? I have a 120gig hardrive in my caddy and am wondering if after I do the safely remove hardware should I then be shutting down the power on my caddy or should I leave it on until I shut down my computer. Also sometimes it will not shut down that way because it says the system is busy and the only way I can shut it down is to turn off the power switch. Could somebody please tell me the safest way to turn on and off this caddy so I don't do harm to my harddrive. Thank you so much.

I've a couple of 3.5" HDD (SATA and IDE) taken from an old Desktop and a Samsung PVR. I also have suitable external USB enclosures. The question is which Jumper settings to use (or leave unused) when in a USB enclosure. One HDD (WD) has the Boot flag set (SATA) and the other Seagate (IDE) hasn't. Both are 200-300 GB sized. Any advice appreciated.

I bought this HDD Caddy from NewModeUS to put an additional drive in the UltraBay adapter. There is a clear plastic layer with a tab on the end over the side of the caddy that has the perforated holes in it. Usually I've seen this tab to help pull the hard drive out of it's slot in a computer but I haven't seen it completely cover the perforated holes of the caddy before.  Anyone know if I should leave the plastic layer on the caddy or not? Will it effect the temp of the drive? Thanks,

I've taken an IDE HD from my now-defunct old Windows ME computer, placed it in an appropriate caddy and connected it to my newish WinXP machine. The intention was to wipe it and use it as an image and data file back-up. At this point it occurred to me that it would be sensible to look at its contents just in case there was anything left on it worth keeping. However, I'm not sure how to do this, or even if it's possible at this stage. It is recognised in the Disk Management window as Disk03 (but no drive letter), with the right capacity and manufacturer's details, but is marked as not initialized and unallocated. Right-clicking brings up a sub-menu with an 'initialize' option, but I thought this was equivalent to re-formatting it so I'm reluctant to try it.It's not vital, as all the important stuff was backed up and transferred to the new computer. But any comments or advice would, as always, be gratefully received.

Answer:Reading old HD in caddy

Have you changed the jumper on the HD from Master to Slave? Also your ME HD may be FAT32 instead of NTFS. Don't know if this might make it unrecognised.

Seriously, I think it is brilliant the way some non English people can communicate in English - this isn't sarcasm - I really mean it.
When a person whose first language isn't English and they write an instruction manual in English about, let's say how to put together a flat pack table or cupboard. At worst it's annoying, at best it's a laugh. Especially when you're watching someone else struggling with it.
But I feel - in view of Health and Safety - there should be a limit as to what kind of instruction manual can be translated in this way. Putting a dowel in a hole where a screw should go, is one thing. Connecting a machine to the mains, then to a PC, when you're not sure if it's the right voltage or you've slid the switch in the correct direction; is a whole different thing altogether!
I think I can speak for most people when I say that seeing or hearing about someone blowing up their PC and being electrocuted in the process; would be just about as far away as anyone can get to being either funny or annoying.
So, before anything even close to this happens to me I'd just like to ask...Does anyone use an all in 1 HDD Docking Caddy? I have just bought one and for what good the 'English' manual is to me, they could have saved their time and money and written it in Chinese? However, the good thing is the manual isn't actually giving general instructions on how to use the caddy. It is in fact telling you how to 'Clone'. Which, luckily for me is not why I got the caddy. Why luc... Read more

Question: W510 HDD Caddy

Ok, so I have a W510, and ordered a HDD Caddy.  The box that the unit came in has 43N3412 written on it, but the actual Caddy has art number 43N3429.  It's not that big of a deal if they are the same part, but here's my issue... 1.  There is a HUGE gap at the top and bottom of the caddy which makes it look like it was never meant to be installed on this model. 2.  Whenever I carry my laptop sideways with the Bay facing down (going between meeting rooms, etc) the drive disconnects.  In order to see the drive again, I have to put pressure on it as if I am inserting the caddy into my laptop again. So, either this is not the correct caddy that was sent to me, or I have an issue with the case on my laptop in which the "catches" are not doing their job. (This does not happen with the DVD RW that came with the unit). Does anyone have one of these caddies working, and staying connected when you laptop is on its side?  If so, can you verify my part number against yours?  Cheers,Josh

Answer:W510 HDD Caddy

Hi same2you, The 43N3412 is the Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter III (Ultrabay Slim 9.5mm) and it's listed under accessories for the W510, but the W510 actually got a bay with the height of 12.7mm. So this would fit perfectly for the W500 that got a bay with the height of 9.5mm, but for the W510 there will be a gap like you describe. I believe the 43N3429 is the sparepart number of the same product. I cannot find a 12.7mm drive bay adapter from Lenovo and i don't think Lenovo ever offered a full-height 12.7mm bay adapter. If they will offer a 12.7mm drive bay adapter because of the new thinkpad models in the close future i don't know. I have seen 12.7mm drive bay adapters from ebay and other places for the T510/W510, but never seen any from Lenovo. If you google for something like "T510 drive bay adapter 12.7mm" you should find it. Whether or not the disconnect issue you describe is correct or not i don't know, but i find it hard to believe that's the way it should work. Since it's listed under accessories for the W510 i would except that it at least work fine with the gap, but i also find it strange that Lenovo doesn't offer a drive bay adapter that fit with the new Thinkpads. Maybe someone else can provide some more info about your disconnect problem, but i don't think Lenovo currently got a 12.7mm drive bay adapter. -gan

Answer:B50-80 hdd upgrade and caddy

Hi Vendra,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

This caddy should do fine
http://hddcaddy.com/en/lenovo-ibm-hdd-caddy/1040-lenovo-b50-hdd-caddy.html

A 9mm caddy should work as your system supports that type of ODD drive

This manual list the ODD support at page 27

Al long as you don't induce any damage while you do the upgrade, your warranty is still valid.

Hope this helps
Cheers!

Answer:can't see hdd in caddy on win7

I don't know what caused the disc to be seen as dynamic and or invalid but there seems to be a fix of changing it back to a Basic disk.

Now, you can't use disk management to do it because that method formats the disc destroying all data.

I see two methods for keeping data safe.

1) Using TestDisk http://mypkb.wordpress.com/2007/03/28/how-to-non-destructively-convert-dynamic-disks-to-basic-disks/

2) Using a Hex Editor http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=191006

If you use the hex editor method the trick will be finding the correct disk connected to your computer. It should show as a removable disk which should make it straight froward.

As far as I can tell either method will work. I've navigated both programs so if you have any questions--ask away.

A thread that might be informative by reading through comments. http://windows7forums.com/windows-7-support/3906-dynamic-disk-invalid.html

... would it work (USB 2.0 interface)? I know that for extra storage, a 300Gb disc seems good value - but I get the backup storage (on DVD RW discs) and a DVD copier too - alll in one portable package - but wd this setup of an external caddy containing an internal DVD RW actually work?

Answer:CAddy & Internal DVD RW ...

CDROM caddies are not very common, but in principle I don't see why it shouldn't work. A USB2 enclosure is just a box with an IDE to USB2 adaptor. For a DVD burner, the caddy must be USB2 and your computer must support it as well (firewire would probably be slightly better). USB1 would be too slow to cope with the data transfer required for burning DVD.

I recently replaced the CD/DVD optical drive in my Inspiron i14-3437-a40 with a new 240GB Kingston UV400 ssd drive in a caddy, but it's not being recognized at all by the computer. It does not appear neither in the BIOS nor in Device Manager/Disk Manager tools in Windows. The CD/DVD drive worked fine though, so I doubt it's an issue with the connector.  I have updated the SATA drivers and the BIOS using Dell's tool in the website, but apparently it was not a driver issue. What could be the reasons for this problem?

Answer:Computer not recognizing SSD in caddy

These devices are hit and miss -- you will need to check with the manufacturer of the caddy to see what they have to say.
In many cases, even if you can see the drive, you won't be able to use it as a boot device when it's mounted in the caddy.

Hello,i have problems with my Lenovo B50-80, running Windows 10.Before this Laptop, i had a HP with a SSD. I replaced the 1000 GB HDD from the Lenovo against the SSD.Next step was to replace the ODD against a HDD Caddy with the 1000 GB HDD.The Problem is, that the HDD is not running. The HDD is visible in Disk Management, but i cant initialize it. It also shows up as "unknown".If i try to initialize it as GPT, a warning shows up, that say that the size of the Disk is to small for GPT. Initializing with MBR there comes warning that System cant find data. Dont know what that means.I thought maybe the HDD is destroyed ore something like that. So i tried it with my tower PC directly connectet via SATA and it worked fine. I also formated the disk with the Tower. Then i tried again with the HDD Caddy and the Laptop but it did not work.In Device Manager it shows up and says, the disk is running without Problems. In Disk Part, the HDD sometimes shows up (with 0 Mb) and sometimes not (which is strange...)In Testdisk, i cant see the HDD. Does anybody know where this problem comes from?Maybe it has something to do with energy savings? Like switching of the ODD when not used? I tried the whole day, but did not find a solution or wokaround. (sorry for bad english)

Hey guys, I recently bought a Lenovo Y500 from CeX (a UK based second hand gaming store) and I'm wanting to swap out the 1tb HDD for a SSD. This seems pretty straight foward enough however, in order to keep the nice amount of disk space I wanted to put the original 1tb HDD out of my laptop into the ultrabay. This is where I seem to have hit a brick wall. After a bit of research I found that I needed a Hard Drive Caddy Adapter and finding the right one for the Y500 seems to be quite complicated. I have found these that appear to come close to what I need:http://www.ecrater.co.uk/help.php?faq_gid=2http://www.partoflaptop.com/product_info.php?language=en¤cy=GBP&products_id=2019http://www.justop.com/catalog/2nd-hard-disk-drive-caddy-ide-to-sata-12-7mm-0-5-inch-for-laptops.html I was wondering which one fits (or do they all fit)? The front plastic bit on any of them doesn't appear to be the same as the one on my ultrabay optical drive that came as standard with the laptop, so I'm a bit skeptical. I have come across other forum posts disscussing the issue but all the links provided are from US based companies that won't ship to the UK. These forums also mention that the front plastic part doesn't exactly fit the Y500 casing so is bound to look a bit out of place. Also any suggestions on what SSD to go for would be very welcome

Answer:Finding a HDD Caddy for the Y500

Your hdd probably is 9.5mm thick so you select a ssd that is 9.5mm or less. As to the caddy yes you will have a hard time removing the original front plate to be installed to the caddy. You might break the plate.

Hello. Seeing it doesn't seem like Lenovo will dish out a GT755M ultrabay anytime soon ( ... ), and I don't really feel like getting a M.2 SSD even though I have the connector soldered onto my mainboard ( availability of those in Europe is barely zilch, and I'm not fond of ordering across the pond ), I've decided to grab a normal SSD and grab a HDD caddy with which I'll replace DVD/RW ( I use optical drive once per 2 months ), keep Windows on SSD and connected to mainboard at all times, while keeping files on HDD, allowing me to swap it out with a DVD/RW ( or a GT755M to play a graphically intensive game, if they ever get around of making those available for purchase, yet alone in Europe, hilarious.. ). Anyhow. I'm probably purchasing following SSD : http://www.links.hr/?naziv=ssd-120-0-kingston-v-200-sata3-2-5-svp200s37a120g-maks-do-535-460-mb-s&op... And I'm probably purchasing following HDD caddy : http://www.links.hr/artikl-016.024.006 - I'm wondering whether y510p meets the industry standard so this caddy is applicable on it, and whether I can or can not mount the Lenovo outer casing on it ( same one which is mounted on the DVDRW drive ). - How will I get around installing Win8 ? I heard that all Lenovos that come shipped with Win8 have a Windows CD key built inside BIOS, meaning I just need to grab a .ISO from Microsoft's site and go ahead and install it. Also, I'm running Windows 7 currently, will there be any things I'll nee... Read more

Answer:SSD, HDD caddy, reinstalling Windows 8.

hi Knbai,

With the upgrade you have in mind, this is definitely doable. You may also want to take a look at the product below as it looks promising in using the stock HDD in the ODD bay.

Lenovo IdeaPad Y510p HDD Caddy

In transferring the stock OS to another drive , the ideal way is to clone/migrate it (i.e. via Paragon Backup & Recovery 12 Home free trial). If the destination drive is not big enough, you can also try to clean install using a Windows 8 ISO (activate windows by phone if necessary).

In addition, If you have installed Windows 7 in legacy mode, you don't need to change anything in the BIOS if you intend to install Windows 8 in legacy mode.

Regards

Because my very slow 5400rpm hdd was annoying me, I bought a samsung 850 evo (500gb) ssd. I copied everything from my hdd to my ssd and deleted the partitions on the hdd. Then I bought a caddy from hdd caddy.com and installed my hdd in the caddy. The ssd works fine but my hdd doesn't show up in the bios, device manager or disk management. Things I tried:- reset bios- startup in high performance mode- set bios to legacy mode- downgrade to standard drivers for IDE ATA/ATAPI  AHCI controller instead of intel ones- installed intel rapid storage technology After all of this the caddy company sent me a new one but this one doesn't work also.Any idea guys?

Answer:Y510P hdd in caddy not found

I appears you have problem with your caddy or you've omitted something Caddy doesn't tell us a lot. Very little in fact. All we can guess with some certainty is its external but nothing else about its functionality. The supplier may be able to help you where you bought it.

I recently cloned my hdd to ssd using Samsung Data Migration Software. Everything was working well. But he the old hdd which I have now installed using a HDD caddy in the optical drive slot is not being recognized in the device manager or disk management tool. The BIOS is detecting the second drive though.

PS: The drive is working perfect over a SATA to USB adapter.

Hello guys!I'm buying a new ThinkPad tomorrow -  the E540 and I'm wondering if I can transfer the old t61 hdd caddy to the new machine?here's the official e540 caddyhttp://www.ebay.com/itm/SATA-2nd-Hard-Drive-HDD-SSD-Caddy-bay-for-Lenovo-ThinkPad-E540-E440-/1712058...and here's the t61 onehttp://www.ebay.com/itm/SATA-2nd-HDD-Caddy-for-IBM-Lenovo-Thinkpad-T60-T61-R60-/180983391163?pt=US_D...they both look identical, they are both 9.5mm thick. So my questions are two - is it going to fit physically and is it going to have any interface-connection issues?

Answer:Can I transfer T61 hdd caddy to E540?

T61 uses pata connection and it is 9.5 mm, while the E540 has data connection for the caddy to the laptop and is 12.7 mm. They are physically incompatible.

Question: x220 drive caddy

Does anyone know where I can purchase the aluminum drive caddy, screws and rubber rails to install a 7mm drive in an x220 primary drive bay?  What are the part numbers? Thanks

Answer:x220 drive caddy

Unfortunately Lenovo only sells the caddy with a drive. The rubber rails can be purchased separately. You can however purchase from an Ebay vendor.http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Lenovo-Thinkpad-X220-Hard-Drive-Caddy-Rail-Screw-Kit-7-0mm-/180875777211...
