PROPER was of installing an SSD?

Question: PROPER was of installing an SSD?

Can someone advise me of the 'proper' way of installing an SSD.
I've done many times now - but I'm sure I'm not doing it right!

First off.. what do I do to format and what file system do I use?
I can't remember, but Win 10 uses some new file system (I forget the name) and you ONLY have one chance to choose!
Otherwise you have to go to GREAT lengths to set back.

Once that's done, what do I do next?
I think what I've done next is through Windows disk manage assigned drives and formatted.
Then... I think I simple restore my Acronis backup.

I am missing something though - like the emergency partition with which I can go back to the original state.

I would love the 'proper instruction' set

Preferred Solution: PROPER was of installing an SSD?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: PROPER was of installing an SSD?

I am not really understanding your question. There is no difference between a ssd and a conventional mech drive [from win7 onward] If you are using an out of date windows operating system ie xp or whatever, then you have to partition manually and set the correct partition offset.
As long as you use win7 or later, just install; that is it.

I Just did a clean install of Windows 7 on my laptop. Once I turned it on I noticed that somethings weren't the same as they were before (not data obviously) like my screen resolution. The max screen resolution available was 1600x900, now it's 1024x768. I also noticed that the computer couldn't find any networks. That made me think that it might be a driver problem. I opened up my devices and drivers and saw several warning symbols next to them. I think they need to be updated, but I'm not really sure. Here's a screenshot of what it looks like. Please help, I can give you more information, you just need to let me know what info you need and maybe how I can get it.

Answer:Help installing proper drivers.

Hi ROBO731, Download the drivers from here Drivers and Downloads | Dell [United States] ,though I could not find your model # in the list ,You can also input the service tag # (found on the bottom of your laptop) into Dells website and have them find the correct drivers for you

At the moment when you install Windows 7 it uses rather generic Microsoft drivers for chipset and other items on the motherboard. Im thinking of installing the proper Intel ones from Download Search Results but since they dont have Windows 7 drivers yet, Ill just use the Vista ones.

Im just wondering which of those drivers on that page Ill need to download for everything thats on my motherboard (DX48BT2) and any of its on board items like nic etc (I have a separate Creative sound card).

Answer:Installing proper Intel drivers

I've only ever seen fit to download the graphics drivers as all motherboard drivers work 100% (chipset/network etc.). I have noticed that i get 110% more control over my GFX if i install the Vista driver so hopefully Intel will update (although for the first time ever the pre-release WDDM 1.0 update has actually worked ).

Hi, I tried to install windows as i experienced frequent freeze. I thought it as mouse freeze. I formatted c drive leaving other drives. i formatted, i installed the windows after just erasing first. It was a kind of failure. I tried another time to reinstall after formatting. I could see some more drives allocated 1 mb other than the usual c: and E only. I reinstalled the windows, it was installing and on reboot, the computer hangs at mobo logo.I tried to power off and power on. but it would not pass it.
after replacing the cmos battery and disconnecting the hard drive, and reconnecting, the logo pass and then failed. i tried to use seagate dos tool, but it would not boot.
Now i am getting the proper error and when i entered it repeates itself continuously .
The fix by the sevenfourm could be performed only if it finds the hard drive. My hard drive is not having any problem whatsoever. i also looked at bios and i could not find hdd in sata 0 port, as usual.
would somebody guide me..

Answer:reboot and select proper while installing windows after formattking

Always disconnect all other drives when installing windows. (just disconnect its power cable)

If the bios does not see the hard drive, then you do not have it connected properly, try again.

There is no reason to remove the battery.

I have set my DVD drive as 1st in the boot order. I have checked that it is IDE. It is plugged into a SATA 3 cable into my motherboard.

I have a pixelview playTV pro (bt878 rev.8e) card and tried installing WDM drivers (jnstead if VxD), but found out they r for XP only. So i uninstalled the device driver via systems->device manager -> selected the TV card device and hit remove.
now i thought 'lemme put back ma original TV card driver' so whn i re-start windows (after uninstalling the device), windows automatically is picking up 'new hardware found' and installing it as WDM media device which isnt right for it!

Q) how can i stop this happenin as i'm able to install the old driver no longer, even with the original CD. ?

many thanks

Answer:TV driver not proper !!!!

Nobody else seems to be answering, so I guess I'll have a stab at it.

Go into the control panel after the machine installs the wdm drivers, highlight the devices in the device manager and choose properties, then navigate to driver details. Note the files used, then remove the devices, and delete the driver files so they won't be found again when you reboot. Also, check in the C:\windows\inf directory for any .inf files that have 878 or 848 in them and delete those files as well before you reboot.

Lastly, reboot and load the vfw drivers.

When I click my start menu I don't have an explore option to get to the C:\Program Files Folder. I can get to the C:\Program Files Folder via the search function. I created a new HJT folder that way but I do want to be sure I do it properly. I am running XP. Do you have any suggestions? Please excuse my ignorance.

Answer:proper hjt installation?

Welcome to Major Geeks!

Thus instructions should have said right click Start and select Explore.

You don't need them now anyway. We have put a new form of HijackThis on our download link. If you download it from us, it is named hijackthis_sfx.exe which you can just run. It will automatically extract and defaults to creating and installing it like the below

C:\Program Files\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe

You will just need to rename HijackThis.exe to analyse.exe

Greetings Everyone,

I am new to this forum, and also new to using a server. I received a Dell PowerEdge 1400SC server from one of my clients (I do web sites). The OS is Windows 2000 server.

I have the following hard drives sitting on my desk:

2 - Quantum Atlas V 18 WLS SCSI Disk Drives
3 - Seagate ST373405LC SCSI Disk Drives
1 - Seagate ST373405LW Disk Drive

My question is: How do I install them the right way?

This is, I'm sure, a tall order to answer. If anyone is interested in responding, I can post the rest of my internal parts if needed. Appreciate any help offered. Thanks in advance.

Answer:Proper Installation

The "right depends" on what SCSI controllers your server has, what you think is important and what sort of work the server will be doing really.

Do you already have some drives installed in the server and Windows is running there and you only want to add your own disks?

The drives you have are an odd set.. The LW Seagate is a hotswap drive. What use is a single SCSI hotswap drive? That server doesn't even have hotswap trays. So you would need an enclosure for that single drive or get a 68-pin to SCA adapter..

I thought I had done my homework, when I ordered a new drive to burn CD's. Guess not, what I got is a ROM Reader-IDE. I want a new drive that plays CD-R, CD-RW, and burns. So, what do I look for? I have a separate DVD drive. Thanks so much.

Answer:What is the proper name for a CD Burner

If you want a drive that burns and reads CDs, you want a CD-RW drive. They're not common nowadays though, they have been replaced by DVD drives.Any DVD burner will also burn CDs, and most DVD reader drives will also burn CDs.Check in the specification of any drive to see what it will record or write to, and what it will read from.Hope this helps.

Hi there,

Till now, my method of backing up files on my computer or external hard drive was to make copies of each file and save it to a DVD or another external hard drive destination. I know this is a primitive way of doing it and, as I am new to any "proper" methods there may be out there, I really want to learn. What programs are used to do this? What is the best, most efficient and successful software for this? I don't mind paying the cash - I'm a music producer and want to secure my data! Can anyone offer some programs and/or useful tips?

I'd appreciate it much.

OK. So basically, I 'had' a program before where you could change the format of a vid file to a different format. friend is sending me some vids that are save into some kind of Apple software format. I want to make it a .WMV format. I had a program that changed this for me. But I can't remember the proper term for it. So now I can't google it and find a download lol. See my problem? It's at the tip of my tongue...but I just can't seem to remember the proper term for this for the life of me. Does anyone here know what I'm talking about? LOL

I am running Windows XP Prof.
I have a few items such as realsched and trueplay, adobe updt check, etc
that I wish to remove from the startup services. I started msconfig,
and unchecked these items from the startup services. Then clicked
on "OK" and rebooted the PC.

When the PC comes up, I get this message:
"The System Configuration Utility is currently in
Diagnostic or Selective Startup mode,
causing this message to be displayed and the
utility to run every time Windows starts.

Choose the Normal Startup mode on the General tab
to start Windows normally and undo the hcanges you
made using the System Configuration Utility."If I choose "Normal startup" it loads everything. I thought
choosing "Selective startup" should not pop up this message
nor start the unchecked items, because under "Selective
Startup" there is a check box for "Load startup Items".

I have read through a couple of tutorials for MSCONFIG but
they don't talk about this aspect. They just mention that it
is a diagnostic tool and how to uncheck services.

How do I get rid of this message from popping up everytime I restart the PC?
Any guidance will be apprecaited.

Answer:Need help with proper use of MSCONFIG

Hi and Welcome to TSF

Place a checkmark in the box in the left bottom corner so the Selective startup will not show at every boot

Proper backup protocol of a domain controller with DNS/DHCP/file server and active directory.

Thought of posting in Data Storage Systems, but this is more of a NetAdmin question.

mainly I want my windows install and active directory backed up. I'd hate to have to recreate it all if it went south.

I have a 136GB raid-1 for OS, and a 1.4tb raid-6 for files. OS is physically only around 40GBs of data, and the Files are only 1000GBs with user shares, and such.

10 disks total. 7 stripped in file, and 2 mirrored in os. 1 hot spare.

What's a proper way to backup the Windows Server 2003 enviroment?

Right now I come onsite early and drop the server at 3AM monday morning and image the system with Acronis. Is there a way to schedule this?

And I have windows backup, with BackupAssit backing up the files... BUT! it's a lot of files, and the backup runs about 36 hours. :/ so It's almost always running a backup on the domain controller.

What do I need to do?

I just have Lacie Quadra drives that I swap out for backups.

How Can I A: properly backup a windows server 2003 enviroment with AD roles.
and B: speed up my file backup

Answer:Proper backup of a DC with AD

I used this guide a few weeks ago to back up my domain controller:

Question: Proper.exe Deleted

I think I just did something really stupid. Our Director was having problems with viruses on her computer and every time upon reboot, they would get the pop up message:Cannot find C:\Windows\system32\proper.exeI would close out this popup and everything started to run fine. I looked up this application and it described it as something that will show fake security alerts: ran adware and spybot clean and sweeps, but the pop up would still upon reboot or logins. So I did a search in the registry and found it at:C:\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\WinloginFor "Shell" the Value DAta was:Explorer.exe C:\Windows\system32\proper.exeso, I deleted this value!!!!Now, only a blank screen comes up with no icons. It is just the Windows Desktop background. Can anyone show me how to unf*$! myself?

Answer:Proper.exe Deleted

Press Ctrl-Alt-Del to get the Windows Task Manager to open.
Click on File, then on New Task (Run)
In the box that pops up, type "explorer.exe" (without the quotes) and press Enter.

This should restore your Desktop
If that works, backup your registry immediately!!!
Then go to Start, then to Run, then type in "regedit" (without the quotes) and press Enter
Navigate to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Once there, right click on an empty area of the right hand pane and select New, then select "String Value"
Type "Shell" (without the quotes) into the key that is created
Then double click on it, and enter "explorer.exe" (without the quotes) in the Data Value field - and click OK to save the changes.
Reboot and your desktop should open up normally.

Let us know if the error message comes back - there's another way to remove it.

Hey guys,

Iv recently been having loads of problems with my PC which resulted in a full format of my computer... even then i was having problems as i found out that one of my sticks of ram had burned...

However, upon removing the stick of ram, i found that a lot of issues were resolved besides a few.

I managed to install windows onto my system and have started to install drivers for various things. However, i am currently struggling to install my sound and Lan drivers... (at the moment i can live without the sound drivers, but i really need to install the Lan drivers to recover my internet connection)

I have the driver disk that came with the motherboard but when i try to install the drivers from it, i get the message "can not find proper NIC, click ok to exit program." and that is as far as i can get with it. I have looked on various driver websites for updated drivers etc.. however, i seem to have the same problem with these...

The motherboard is an XFX KT400-ALH

Does anybody know what the problem with this could be? anybody got any suggestions that i could try? thanks for any help in advance...

Answer:Cannot find proper NIC

make sure it is enabled and if possible, attempt to update the DRIVER.

Hello all,

I've always had this problem with my internet and now its gotten to a point where I have to solve it. The problem is, whenever I'm recieving a file off of mIRC and the speeds are in the 200 hundreds kbs Im fine. However, when the speeds increase to an abnormal constant rate of 450 kbs (which I have no problem with obviously, its awsome) and I get all excited.... the connection gets cut and I get the error:

Closing Connection: Unable to transfer data (Connection reset by peer)

I have an ASUS SLI DELUXE motherboard and am using the onboard NIC. Are there any reasons for this? I have this feeling that somehow I'm capping my download speeds?

Any support is greatly appreciated.

My brother's computer had an apparently catastrophic failure last night. He turned it on after our geriatric technoamish father forced a hard shut down (Dad didn't know that it wasn't interchangeable with a proper shut down procedure, apparently) and...well, this exact pattern of errors occurred:

Remove Smart Defragmenter (Uninstall Guide)

My brother was panicking pretty hard over the fact that all of his data seemed to have vanished into thin air, so we ended up taking his hard drive out of the tower and plugging it into another computer via USB docking station to check that all the files were still on there. (They were.)

Here's where the real problem starts: now that we've put his hard drive back in his tower, it won't boot at all. We power it on, but the monitor goes immediately to sleep and nothing happens.

We didn't discover that the original error was a virus-related problem until I was Googling what he could remember of the error messages he'd gotten and found the page linked above.

The computer in question is an eMachines ET1331G-03W with an ECS MCP61PM-GM motherboard, AMD Athlon II X2 235e Dual-Core processor, running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

Any help would be appreciated.

The fan in my T30 suddenly started to make noise.  I removed it and found that the stator assembly, which is pressed into the aluminum case, had become loose.  I bonded it back in uisng Loctite 603 (available from McMaster Carr) and it held properly.  I applied 5VDC to the red and black wires, and the fan worked fine on the bench.  It drew about 300mA, which agrees with the label on the fan.I reinstalled the fan with appropriate thermal grease on the CPU.  Upon startup the fan runs for a very short while and then shuts off.   I seem to remember the fan running all the time at a low level, and sometimes going into "high gear" when the computer got hot.  Is my recollection wrong ?  Does the fan only come on at elevated CPU temperatures?  I do not get any "fan error" message.  I have not run the laptop for an extended period to see if the fan come on for fear of causing damage.  Words of wisdom?TIA,Dan

I use a backup system (Retrospect) that includes an Emergency Recovery CD based on Win 7 PE. And it does work. One usage is to replace a completely failed hard drive. In my case, I want to replace a hard drive with an SSD in the same system.

Can I use the Win 7 PE to initialize and format the SSD and respect the 4K alignment requirement for SSD? Or should I be using a different tool?

Answer:Does a Win 7 PE do proper alignment for SSD?

An initial format should work fine. You'll need other tools if you ever copy a partition from HDD to SSD.

I just replaced my old CD drive with a new Sony CD-RW/DVD-ROM. To my naive surprise I can't copy anything to my old CD-R's. What Kind of CD's or DVD's or whatever should I buy so I can store data to them. Will these new media be compatible with other computers or what?

I have gotten kind of lost in all the alphabet soup, and need a bit of help. Thanks.

I'm running W2K sp 4

Answer:proper media for CD-RW/DVD-ROM

You need to buy CD-RW or Cd Re-write disks if you want to write to a CD more than once and delete data on them too. Verbatim is a brand I recommend.

So, I posted a message last week or so, about my laptop being broken and blue screening.
I sent it back to Acer once again, only this time they've sent it back and done NOTHING to it! Said they can't find any faults, now, I know this is complete bull because it's still broken.
Now, I'm dead confused because I don't know what to do. If Acer can't fix my laptop, what do I do? I've been without it for ages now, and it's starting to become a real pest. I'm quite sure that it hasn't just managed to fix itself, that's impossible right? Do I just keep sending it back to Acer?

Answer:Right, proper confused

I am having a bad run of failing to boot HDs.

After trying to repair the spare Sata W.Digital HD it will again NOT Boot on its own, but boots with a boot floppy program called "fixntldr.exe" I found here:-

Simple "ntldr is missing" fix with boot floppy, CD-R, or USB flash

Somehow I blew it & ended up with 2 Wins XP, as shown below in HD Manager, one in E primary & another in J logical shown in image below.

Can I delete the J logical partition?.

Can anybody see a way of getting this HD to boot on its own.

If I go in Safe Mode is there anything I can do to change things.

Answer:Another HD not booting proper

Is BIOS correctly identifying the hard drive?

Is the hard drive from this machine previously, or from another one with a XP install?

We really need to know more information about whether it worked before, what you did to it, and how this all happened if possible please.

Question: proper driver for

I got a notice today :  Routine Customer Advisory - Mar 27 2017 HP ProBook 645, 655 G1 and 725, 745 and 755 G2 Notebook PCs - Stop Errors Are Displayed on a Blue Sc...  Remedy = SP78044 Oddly just yesterday I inadvertentely deleted my network driver.  I have an EliteBook 745 G2  model # L6M62UP #ABAB.I went to HP Software and drivers and downloaded the recommended driver for Windows 10 64 bit = SP78044. But it refused to work.  I downloaded the driver executed it, saved and restarted (no driver). Tried again, and usied the testing and auto resetting of the driver.  Failed to install. So I remembered the original driver was 32 bit and downloaded he Windows 7 32 bit driver sp76906. It too needed to be installed and then tested and the adjustments to the driver were accepted and installed. On reboot this worked whereas SP78044 did not. The operating system: is Windows 10 Enterprise Version 1607. Perhaps this result is due to the processer which is an AMD A8 Pro-7140B R5.

Does Windows 8 have a proper desktop?
Is Windows 8 better than any of the following?
Is Windows 8 a design by "marketing" or an improvement on the past?

Windows 8

The term "proper" here makes no sense. "proper" infers there is some standard or qualitative measurement of what a desktop is, and there is no such thing.

As such, the rest of your questions are moot.

Answer:proper way to set up a scsi hd

Yes, you can fdisk and format a SCSI hard drive the same way as an IDE providing that you have installed it correctly with proper termination and ID settings. You also need to have it identified by your BIOS setup as "not installed". SCSI controllers usually come with a set of disk utilities for proper identification and low level formatting though low level formatting is usually not necessary since SCSI hard drives are pre-formatted at the factory.

Morning all, I have a little annoyance and was wondering if anyone on here could provide a good solution.I have got a 2100 XP with 512 DDR which has got a 60GB hard drive and soon to be installed 120GB hard drive both running at 7,200RPM. The problem I have got is how do I successfully set these 2 drives up to suit my way of working. I am finding that I have to reboot and reinstall my OS all the time because I just get it so cluttered up I don't know where anything is!I have got windows 2000 pro which I am sticking with as it is the best for my means. I just don't like XP but I wouldn't mind playing with it I suppose. Once solution I had was to partition the 60GB drive into 3 x 20GB partitions and have win2k on one, xp on the other and the third one for backups via Norton Ghost and then I have 120GB for storage. What do you lot suggest? Anyone in a similar position?

Answer:The best way to go about proper storage

I have a 60Gb main drive and a 20 Gb Secondary. The main drive has my Windows XP installation on it.The secondary is partitioned into two other drives.1 x 2Gb for the Swap File1 x 18Gb for BackupsThe 18Gb Drive has folder like Utilities - which contains copies for programs i use and have downloaded of the net (legally), Drivers - which contains all my drivers for my hardware, Backup - where a program called EZBack-it-up 1.2 click here has been set up to copy My Documents and various other settings to, Patches - which contains software patches i have used, Windows XP CD - copy of my Windows XP CD etc etcBut then again i'm really fussy on how i store stuff on my PC. If i need a program then i know exactly where its going to be....

How to properly set up a LAN & Required hardware?
First Question. So my friends and I are going to college this year. (Woo!! Yeah!!) We are all big Gamers. We all have PC's and Consoles which we would like to use when playing online. We're wondering what the proper way to set up a LAN would be. All of us have tried, All of us have failed. So here are the questions and what we hope to achieve.

Hardware Questions.
We have a decent server so far. The question is will it be enough? And what else do we need to purchase to properly set up the LAN?

Current Hardware:
Processor Here
Memory Here
Motherboard Here
OS Here

Ethernet card(s) or Routers. What should we purchase? What kind and how many.

Will a 600W PSU Be enough to power everything?

The server will be set up to Monitor Traffic between Our 3 PC's and the Rest of the world. It will also be used to store our projects we work on, and possibly hosting a test site. (We're all going into Computer Networking & Technology programs and 1 of us into Web Design)

Software Questions!
If we manage to connect THROUGH the server to the outside world, Is it possible to set up the server to reject certain sites/connections? We want this to be our primary protection against unwanted things.

Other Questions!
Will file sharing be fast? We work on videos/pictures a lot, and sometimes they can get real big, 1-2+ GB and we don't have all night to send it to each other. What speeds Could I achie... Read more

Answer:Proper Lan Setup Q's.

Sounds like you all are a bit green to servers and networks. So my suggestion is to NOT setup a server as your proxy/router to the internet/outside world. You're just asking for trouble if you don't have the expertise to properly lock down the server. Placing data which is sensitive on a server with direct access to the internet is also asking for trouble.

The simplest way to provide internet connectivity and to keep your systems secure is to throw your run of the mill router in front of your devices.

Guys, i would really appreciate your help

Im a newbie with windows and i have recently purchased a windows 10 connect tablet. When i got into the display settings all my resolution options are greyed out and i can't change anything.

I connected the tablet to my hdtv which has an output resolution of 1920x1080 according to the net. The options then become available in the display settings where i can change the resolution but the max i can get is 1280x800 therefore i get black borders around the image.

Sorry for my ignorance but I have read all the above and i still can't understand it. i had an intel device driver there but changed it to basic display in device manager. now when i go to switch back to intel its no longer in the list in device manager. Will other drivers work on this tablet?

In a nutshell i just want to get 1920x1080 resolution on my windows 10 connect tablet so that when i plug into my tv there are no borders. If the display resolutions match then it fits right? Tried the nvidia app but can't find devices.

Sorry again but I am at a loss and all the technical jargon above overwhelms me !

Thanks in advance

Answer:Can't set proper resolution

i had an intel device driver there but changed it to basic display in device manager. now when i go to switch back to intel its no longer in the list in device manager. Will other drivers work on this tablet?

To start, you'll have to reinstall the Intel driver for the graphics. The basic version is just that, only good enough for basic usage of the machine. Other drivers probably won't work, have to be for the specific adapter. If can't find on the machine maker's site will usually have to do a Factory Restore.

I have called and called and moaned and groaned but Lenovo will NOT give me the proper manuals for my new (when I got it). The incorrect ones are online and the same incorrect ones were shipped with the unit. The easiest way to see if it is the correct manual is to look at the number of memory slots, the K230 is shipped with 6 gig of memory and has 4 memory slots. It also has additional audio connectors including S/PDIF optical. The manuals shipped with the machine show only 2 memory slots and bassic audio connectors.  Lenovo support says the manuals are not available to the general public. Their documentation in sales brochures says 6 gig of memory, 3  2 gig modules and that is what i have.  Now, how can I get the correct manuals for my Ideacentre K230?  Why will Lenovo not give the correct manuals with their computers? Heck I can go to Joe Blow computer works and purchase a $29 system board and it will come with proper documentataion. I am PO'ed with Lenovo. I worked for almost 40 years for IBM corp in service and we always had available for the customer the proper documentation. What if the motherboard goes out in this computer, how will we ever get the proper one?

Answer:G50-80 - Proper way of using laptop battery

Hi Jimmy283,
Welcome to the Forums
As per the query we understood that you are looking for the battery backup in your Lenovo G50-80 laptop.
I would suggest you to connect the battery and charge it till 100% and disconnect the adapter and discharge the battery till 20% and again charge the battery.
You can also put the battery into conservation mode, conservation mode charges upto 60% and stops.
Let us know the result.

I've looked, and looked, and looked for the answer not only here but EVERYWHERE and I still can't figure it out. I'm not a computer guru, to give you an idea on my skill, I can basically take a PC apart and put it back together pretty easily.

I have a network problem.

See, I have a router (D-Link, DI-524) with 2 computers and an XBOX 360 connected to it. Now, the D-Link is connected to the modem (2WIRE 2701HG-G, which is kind of like a router itself) with 3 more PC's hooked up to it.

How do I make it so that we can all communicate and share files? I am also trying to forward the ports for an online MMO. The ports are never seen from my computer (one of the ones connected to the D-Link, which is then connected to the 2WIRE) which I use canyouseeme. I followed all the required guides for that on

Any help would be extremely appreciated.

(Note: All the PC's are running Vista, except for 1 (XP) which connects straight to the 2WIRE.

What is the proper way to apply cpu paste? I got some arctic silver 5 for my new 3200+ coming, and my brother told me to put a little spot on the middle of the heat sink, and when it is tightened down on the cpu, it spreads out over the cpu.

Answer:Proper cpu paste application

Your information is correct. Apply a small amount on the middle of your CPU's heatspreader, around the size of an uncooked grain of rice. When the HSF is securely fastened upon the processor, the pressure of the heatsink will spread the paste evenly across the entire contacting surface.

Why does a different desktop appear when I'm disconnected from the cable management system, and how do I configure things so that \Public\Desktop appears no matter what?
Similarly, when the PC is disconnected from the cable management system, emails are not automatically appearing in the (Outlook) Inbox after they get downloaded from the server. I have just discovered hibernation mode on my laptop, and it speeds up the "boot-up" so fast, that I tend to want to shut it down in hibernation mode all the time.

I have a feeling that this isn't the proper use of hibernation mode. I can start up and shutdown my laptop several times a day, and hibernation makes it so much quicker, I figure that it can't be all good with no drawbacks.
Am I giving up security in any way by using it? Are their any down sides to using hibernation mode?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Proper use of hibernation mode?

It sounds so good and has the propensity to be so bad that I never use it. I actually used it when I first got a system that made it available and for a while it was great. Then one day I couldn't wake the system up. Fortunately I was still in warranty so I called MS. The very first thing they suggested was that I not use the Hidernate mode since it was risky.

Now, granted this might have been some dummy that wasn't stating true company policy but I took his advice and my system has not had that problem since. Your money - your data - you decide if shorter boot times is worth any risk to data.

Please help me understand the proper configuration. I don't just want to get it right, I want to understand why one is the proper model and why the others aren't.

I can't help but think a lot of people may write it really won't make a difference but I'm sure one is standard, there's got to be a logic to this and that's what I'm aiming for.

In case my quick write-up isn't clear, the switches are distanced apart by walls that can be drilled through but that will take several days of crawlspace work and sheet metal drilling.

Thank you, all.

Answer:Please advise me on the proper LAN config herein

I'm going to start with ABC. In my opinion, A is correct. It seems closest to the Cisco Hierarchical Model. Your managed switch is acting as the distribution layer, and your dumb switch and POE switch are the access layer. Your Router pretty much acts as the Core layer. If you really want to go by the book, your distribution and core layers should have redundant devices if it's within budget.

Now D: If you want LACP, I would do model A with however many 1Gb connections between each device.

As soon as you get home with your computer:

Dont install the antivirus software that pops up with instuctions to install.
Should be done at the end and this software, although probably free for a while,
will cost money down the road and is probably not the best.

Windows updates should be done immediately as you are vulnerable to problems
until updated; be sure to include office updates.

Adobe reader should be updated, the most recent version is a sandbox version which
reduces virus vulnerablity to your PDF files.

This is also the opportunity to download Adobe Flash Player

Download an alertative browser; ie FF or Chrome etc. In the event of problems with IE.

Remove any unwanted program bloat. They will slow up your computer and probably
cost money in the future.

Download your antivirus; Microsoft Security Essentials is suggested.

Make your recovery disc.

Steps that I did not notice on the guide include:

Running a scan disc before doing a defrag

Using Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes.

Making System Restore points, at least once a week

Makaing a system Image once a month (varies by user)

Not relying on your A/V common sense, should prevail. You know of many sites can cause a problem.

Do not use any reg cleaning or optimizing software.

Download and use Ccleaner about once every two months. Untick any reg... Read more

Your additions are very good.

I noticed in the article you linked that they mention using a vacuum inside the computer case. This is a very bad idea, unless the vacuum is an ESD (static free) one.

I personally never clean my registry with Windows 7. It seems to do well enough on its own. I messed up a Vista install badly that way, and I've never forgotten that.

hi, let me introduce myself. My name is Solotekk and I am a computer consultant. I was wondering if anyone might be willing to help me out. Before I go any further...... I need to personally thank Broni for pointing me in the right direction.... kudos to you.....Here is the issue. My client had a crapload of viruses and trojans, name was there. I removed everything but am now getting a windows error msg window that pops up when rebooting. this is the msg:c:\windows\system32\proper.exethe msg states that windows is unable to locate the file proper.exe and instructs to do a search for the file. If you would be so kind as to assist me in this matter, I would greatly appreciate it. let me know, thankssolotekk

You may not have gotten rid of all of the remnants of the malware as proper.exe is malicious.Check the processes in Task Manager to see if proper.exe is running and end the process if so.Then go to to C:\WINDOWS\System32\proper.exe and delete the file/folder proper.exe

I was told this; boy have we all heard that before. Question, is it true if you load a program from a CD that it should be removed with that CD. It remove it more completely that using add/remove off of the control panel? Is this is true and if so; why?

Answer:The proper way to remove a program

The only programs that I know of where the CD is required for removal...are versions of MS Office.

Even those3 will start the removal from Add/Remove Programs and users will then be prompted to insert the necessary CD.

When a program is properly installed, those files generally includes the installation of the necessary utility for uninstallation of that program.

I cannot really tell you why MS Office is different .

Answer:Proper WiFi Card for T-410

Hi Bob,
Welcome to Lenovo Community! And happy to have you here.
As I understand that you are looking to upgrade Wi-Fi Card for your T410.
Upgrading Wi-fi cards in Lenovo is bit tricky as Lenovo uses a whitelist stored in BIOS for certain hardware like Wi-fi, WWAN etc.

The above error message you are getting it because the card which you have purchased doesn't contain the Lenovo FRU and here's the infamous whitelist comes into play blocking the newly added card to work in your system.

Windows 2003 Standard Server

Here's the problem:
The server has been experiencing very inconsistant problems upon reboot. We're receiving the all so popular "REBOOT AND SELECT PROPER BOOT DEVICE, OR INSERT BOOT MEDIA IN SLECTED BOOT DEVICE AND PRESS ANY KEY" error, but it's not happening every time the system loads up. This system is new and I can vouche that this is not anything to do with the OS since it's been present for both OS installs (XP + Win2003) since the birth of the server. The server randomly won't restart, then after a few retries it loads without a problem. Usually the problem exists only upon reboot, but last night we noticed that the system was unpingable and had crashed, when we called our datacenter for help they informed us of the current state the system was in with the above error. After reading up on this error I noticed a few people got around it by a normal cntrl-alt-del from the error screen, which works and reboots the server normallly, but we can't do this remotely unfortunately. When I went down to the datacenter to take a look at the machine I noticed the bios lost some of it's settings for raid and couldn't reboot. This was only when a cntrl-alt-del didn't work.

What we've tried so far:
I've tried disabling the PXE in the bios and rearranging the boot device order. Swapping drives only mak... Read more

I do that:
1. Uninstall driver
2. remove what left with driver sweeper
3. Reboot and try to install new driver BUT win7 automatically find their stock driver for 7600GT and installs it, damn it.
Maybe I don't need to do that anymore?
So, my question is:
What are the proper way to update video card drivers in windows 7?

Answer:proper driver update

hi rookalius and welcome to sevenforums,

i don't quite understand your problem.

what happens if you try installing the new driver after the stock drivers get installed?

Hi, can anyone tell me what should be the proper way to format my C drive and reinstall XP?
If I try to install window FROM my current window, it wouldn't let me format my c drive, it keep asking if i wanna partition my drive which I don't. There is no format option for me to do that and if I continue without format, i will have 2 windows on top of each other causing system errors.

What should I do to format the drive? and then reinstall?

I would like to thank in advance any responses I receive to this thread.

I am currently running an ATI video card. My problem, however, is that I am unaware of the specific model and make. I made the mistake of inadvertently uninstalling my driver, and I do not know how to locate the specific driver I need.

My current symptoms include an inability to run games and very choppy scrolling in browsers and text documents.

If anyone could help me at all, then I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you.

Answer:How To Specify Proper Video Driver?

Download and run Everest Home (it is free):

Once you download it, click on it and let it install and then run it from the icon on your desktop and then click on 'Display' then on 'GPU', then go to the VERY top of the screen and click on 'report', then 'quick report-gpu' and then 'plain text' and save it then go to C:/programs/lavalys and open that folder then open Everest Home folder and then reports and click on the report which will open it in a text editor and then use your mouse to highlight ALL the 'registers' stuff at the bottom of the report and delete it and then save that file again and then copy and paste it to here.

Hi All, I would like to download Firefox but I am not sure which build to download for my Vista home preminm 64 bit. Could you kindly direct me in the right direction. Also is there directions on what steps I take to download firefox as I want to make sure I download it right and don't end up with problems. Thank you so much.

Answer:searching for proper browser

Pretty much all you need,

Firefox web browser | Faster, more secure, & customizable

Download, install, and use it; no fuss, no muss, no bother. There is a 64 bit version that is still in beta that works very well, but if Flash is a concern (Youtube, etc), just stick to the 32 bit version for now.

Also once installed don't forget to check out the extension,

with one of the big one's being Adblock Plus,

Hi Everyone,

I would like to get some help from the TSF Security Team.

I work for a company who assists in supporting home users with various issues. Due to a great influx with the new virus and scareware, I am working on making a process list to follow for various problems.

The only part I am not 100% certain on is the best course of action if the malware takes over your computer in safe mode and does not allow you to kill the process.

What would be the best course of action in this?
All help is greatly appreciated

Answer:Proper Malware Removal

Sorry, but we do not give out general help, especially for a for-profit entity. The Virus/Trojan/Spyware Help forum is dedicated to helping the home end-user with specific malware issues. You might want to pose a question in our General Security Forum

Acer, we really REALLY need a proper BIOS on all of your lovely notebooks: Basically all one can change in the BIOS is the time and boot order. Aside from that, the BIOS has nothing to offer and every useful option is locked away in the depth of the ROM, waiting for a keen modder to unlock that. I am not talking about Overclocking, voltage tweaks or timings (though it would still be nice, hehe), I am talking about usefull, non-HW breaking options such as:Enable/Disable Hyperthreating (I really really need this to be OFF)Enable/Disable VTxEnable/Disable HPETWake on Keyboard/Mouse/etcDisable/Enable OptimusSelect SATA Mode (SATA1/2/3)None of these options can break a laptop, they can only improve upon it. Acer, could you kindly provide such a BIOS in the near forseeable future (like tomorrow) for all your current laptops and especially for the V5-573G? :-)

I'm using a Finnish version of Windows 7 Home Premium x64 SP1.
Windows Update has been dead since September, so I finally decided to do a repair install.
I do not have a Windows installation disc, so I'm forced to use an ISO file.
I tried to do a repair install with an English version of Windows 7 Home Premium x64 SP1 U, which I found here, but apparently I need to use a Finnish one, since I got this message when I tried to do the install:

You can’t do a typical upgrade using an installation disc that’s different from the language installed on your computer.

So where do I find a Finnish Windows 7 Home Premium x64 SP1 ISO file?
Or are there some other ways to do this?

Edit: Yep, it worked. Thanks.

Answer:Can't find a proper ISO file

You can try using the ei.cfg Removal Utility to create a Universal installer with all versions.

Download the Windows 7 Professional x64 SP1 U Finnish ISO from Windows 7 Direct Download Links, Official Disk Images from Digital River

Download the ei.cfg Removal Utility from winisoutils - Windows ISO Disc Image Utilities
(download link is at the bottom of the page)

Here are instructions for using the ei.cfg Removal Utility
Ei.cfg Removal Utility Lets You Use Any Product Key With Your Windows 7 Disc

I don't know if this will work for what you need, but it's free to try.

well i guess i should start off with what i THINK happend, well i was clearing out some files and i had first accidently uninstalled something that i think i shouldnt have, i was trying to select something below it but hit it and there was no cancel option, now i dont know what it was but i know it had a computer as the image icon and was somthing "video", now nothing happend at first it was running fine i just brushed it off, i then went and downloaded fire fox because i was tired of IE, after i gt fire fox i went and tried to uninstall ie, which i dont know why i didd that i just did, not sure if it worked or not but it ran through the uninstall, my laptop was fine for the rest of the night without a problem. when i went the next morning (the 16th) and turned my laptop on, it looked really funny, the file windows would move very slowly and choppy when i moved them around and any games or application graphics seemed well pixeled if that makes sense it just wasnt clear or normal looking, so my boyfriend told me to just do a system restore and of course i did it setting it back a few weeks. now, the screen looked normal again andworked fine BUT, now i have a new issue, FireFox was taken off, IE is still on but its horrible looking, first at the bottom of the tabs of what is open where it would normally have the e icon and say internet explorer, it only has the e icon and blank, i can only open ie with ad ons off and even if theyre off or on nothing shows up as far as... My Yoga 13 original memory is Sharetronic 4GB DDR3 1600. I'm considering a memory upgrade as RAM is pretty cheap now. To confirm what RAM I should be purchasing, the Yoga 13 HMM (page 27) says it supports "DDR3L-1333, 8GB, SODIMM x 1". Obviously, DDR3L is different than the DDR3 I found as the original part in my computer (although from my understanding DDR3L should work with either 1.35V or 1.5V) and the 1600 is a higher speed than 1333 in the HMM. I guess it makes sense that the more RAM you have the system board may not be able to handle it at higher speeds. Normally I wouldn't be asking this question and trust what the HMM says. But after taking my Yoga apart a few times for repair work, I can tell the HMM is wrong in several places. It's certainly not the quality of the old Thinkpad HMMs. Any knowledge to share? Recommendations on RAM? Looks like I can get 8GB DDR3L/1333 for around $35. Thanks in advance.

Answer:What is proper RAM upgrade for Yoga 13?

Hi sidjoyner ,
Welcome to the Community Forums,
I would be great if we have your machine number to verify  available parts . Keep the serial number confidential . Better yet have a detail view of the specs that we have inside,  so we can compare notes .
Nonetheless, checking further on HMM  , (example) processor : Ivy bridge core Dual Core ULV, Intel I7-3517U , 1.9G L1 4M 2cBGA (page 61).
It would show that the memory controller it can handle would be Memory Types DDR3/L/-RS 1333/1600 wherein it would accomodate both ddr3 and ddr3L . Same reason why Sharetronic 4GB DDR3 1600 and offered MEMORY 11200504 SS M471B1G73BH0-YK0 DDR3L 1600 8GB  upgrade would work.
Check back with us at anytime so we can decide on the upgrade.

I'm on a iPhone please bare the spelling mistakes.

Current Situation - I have reset my bios after a crash and tried to reinstall my xp oem, but I can't get past the validation key code, because I couldn't find it, I phoned ms customer support and the lady told me to phone hp or Dell about it, but my pc was custom built 3-4 years ago, so I can't get a product key.

So I've been talking with my friend and he says that he can send me a program or link to torrent file to download program to remove the verification, so I bought a flash drive and I'm going to talk with him later about

So What Should I Do? (i have a 4gb flash drive that isn't formatted btw)

- I'm considering just downloading a cracked xp off a bit torrent site, so I don't have to deal with useless piracy prevention activation garbage. I don't care that I will lose my files do to them being redownloadable & transferable from steam & my iPod classic

- I know hard forum doesn't condone piracy but I was considering pirating 7, is it a better running os, I just don't want to experience more crap

- Should I just go with my friend and try the verification remover, has anyone tried this before

Also - I've never used a flash drive before would it be okay to put a os and driverson the same drive, do they need to be partitioned or in seperate folders

Thanks for reading till the end

Answer:What should I do? (to detailed for Proper title)

uhh... yeah... might want to remove the xp crack part and the part about pirating Win7.

Can someone tell me what is the proper setup for 2 NIC cards in 1 PC? My office is going to DSL and all PCs will use NICs connected to a router. However, 2 of the PCs are linked together via NIC cards and a 5 port hub. They need to stay together but also need to be able to access the internet. Currently, they connect together via the NIC and hub, and access the internet via 56k modem.

Can I just install the new NIC cards and configure them as I would any other NIC card? Or is there some protocol I need to insert to keep them distinct.

I should mention not all the PCs are the same. All are Pentiums but some are Dells and others are no-name brands running PIIs.

Thanks to anyone who can help with this.

Is there an uplink port on the hub. If so you can leave them connected just use the DSL line in the uplink port.
