PROPER was of installing an SSD?

Question: PROPER was of installing an SSD?

Can someone advise me of the 'proper' way of installing an SSD.
I've done many times now - but I'm sure I'm not doing it right!

First off.. what do I do to format and what file system do I use?
I can't remember, but Win 10 uses some new file system (I forget the name) and you ONLY have one chance to choose!
Otherwise you have to go to GREAT lengths to set back.

Once that's done, what do I do next?
I think what I've done next is through Windows disk manage assigned drives and formatted.
Then... I think I simple restore my Acronis backup.

I am missing something though - like the emergency partition with which I can go back to the original state.

I would love the 'proper instruction' set

Preferred Solution: PROPER was of installing an SSD?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: PROPER was of installing an SSD?

I am not really understanding your question. There is no difference between a ssd and a conventional mech drive [from win7 onward] If you are using an out of date windows operating system ie xp or whatever, then you have to partition manually and set the correct partition offset.
As long as you use win7 or later, just install; that is it.

I Just did a clean install of Windows 7 on my laptop. Once I turned it on I noticed that somethings weren't the same as they were before (not data obviously) like my screen resolution. The max screen resolution available was 1600x900, now it's 1024x768. I also noticed that the computer couldn't find any networks. That made me think that it might be a driver problem. I opened up my devices and drivers and saw several warning symbols next to them. I think they need to be updated, but I'm not really sure. Here's a screenshot of what it looks like. Please help, I can give you more information, you just need to let me know what info you need and maybe how I can get it.

Answer:Help installing proper drivers.

Hi ROBO731, Download the drivers from here Drivers and Downloads | Dell [United States] ,though I could not find your model # in the list ,You can also input the service tag # (found on the bottom of your laptop) into Dells website and have them find the correct drivers for you

At the moment when you install Windows 7 it uses rather generic Microsoft drivers for chipset and other items on the motherboard. Im thinking of installing the proper Intel ones from Download Search Results but since they dont have Windows 7 drivers yet, Ill just use the Vista ones.

Im just wondering which of those drivers on that page Ill need to download for everything thats on my motherboard (DX48BT2) and any of its on board items like nic etc (I have a separate Creative sound card).

Answer:Installing proper Intel drivers

I've only ever seen fit to download the graphics drivers as all motherboard drivers work 100% (chipset/network etc.). I have noticed that i get 110% more control over my GFX if i install the Vista driver so hopefully Intel will update (although for the first time ever the pre-release WDDM 1.0 update has actually worked ).

Hi, I tried to install windows as i experienced frequent freeze. I thought it as mouse freeze. I formatted c drive leaving other drives. i formatted, i installed the windows after just erasing first. It was a kind of failure. I tried another time to reinstall after formatting. I could see some more drives allocated 1 mb other than the usual c: and E only. I reinstalled the windows, it was installing and on reboot, the computer hangs at mobo logo.I tried to power off and power on. but it would not pass it.
after replacing the cmos battery and disconnecting the hard drive, and reconnecting, the logo pass and then failed. i tried to use seagate dos tool, but it would not boot.
Now i am getting the proper error and when i entered it repeates itself continuously .
The fix by the sevenfourm could be performed only if it finds the hard drive. My hard drive is not having any problem whatsoever. i also looked at bios and i could not find hdd in sata 0 port, as usual.
would somebody guide me..

Answer:reboot and select proper while installing windows after formattking

Always disconnect all other drives when installing windows. (just disconnect its power cable)

If the bios does not see the hard drive, then you do not have it connected properly, try again.

There is no reason to remove the battery.

Greetings Everyone,

I am new to this forum, and also new to using a server. I received a Dell PowerEdge 1400SC server from one of my clients (I do web sites). The OS is Windows 2000 server.

I have the following hard drives sitting on my desk:

2 - Quantum Atlas V 18 WLS SCSI Disk Drives
3 - Seagate ST373405LC SCSI Disk Drives
1 - Seagate ST373405LW Disk Drive

My question is: How do I install them the right way?

This is, I'm sure, a tall order to answer. If anyone is interested in responding, I can post the rest of my internal parts if needed. Appreciate any help offered. Thanks in advance.

Answer:Proper Installation

The "right depends" on what SCSI controllers your server has, what you think is important and what sort of work the server will be doing really.

Do you already have some drives installed in the server and Windows is running there and you only want to add your own disks?

The drives you have are an odd set.. The LW Seagate is a hotswap drive. What use is a single SCSI hotswap drive? That server doesn't even have hotswap trays. So you would need an enclosure for that single drive or get a 68-pin to SCA adapter..

Hey guys,

Iv recently been having loads of problems with my PC which resulted in a full format of my computer... even then i was having problems as i found out that one of my sticks of ram had burned...

However, upon removing the stick of ram, i found that a lot of issues were resolved besides a few.

I managed to install windows onto my system and have started to install drivers for various things. However, i am currently struggling to install my sound and Lan drivers... (at the moment i can live without the sound drivers, but i really need to install the Lan drivers to recover my internet connection)

I have the driver disk that came with the motherboard but when i try to install the drivers from it, i get the message "can not find proper NIC, click ok to exit program." and that is as far as i can get with it. I have looked on various driver websites for updated drivers etc.. however, i seem to have the same problem with these...

The motherboard is an XFX KT400-ALH

Does anybody know what the problem with this could be? anybody got any suggestions that i could try? thanks for any help in advance...

Answer:Cannot find proper NIC

go to your Device Manager and locate the nic.
make sure it is enabled and if possible, attempt to update the DRIVER.

you'll need the CD and to show the utility where to search, eg: d:\

I use a backup system (Retrospect) that includes an Emergency Recovery CD based on Win 7 PE. And it does work. One usage is to replace a completely failed hard drive. In my case, I want to replace a hard drive with an SSD in the same system.

Can I use the Win 7 PE to initialize and format the SSD and respect the 4K alignment requirement for SSD? Or should I be using a different tool?

Answer:Does a Win 7 PE do proper alignment for SSD?

An initial format should work fine. You'll need other tools if you ever copy a partition from HDD to SSD.

How to properly set up a LAN & Required hardware?
First Question. So my friends and I are going to college this year. (Woo!! Yeah!!) We are all big Gamers. We all have PC's and Consoles which we would like to use when playing online. We're wondering what the proper way to set up a LAN would be. All of us have tried, All of us have failed. So here are the questions and what we hope to achieve.

Hardware Questions.
We have a decent server so far. The question is will it be enough? And what else do we need to purchase to properly set up the LAN?

Current Hardware:
Processor Here
Memory Here
Motherboard Here
OS Here

Ethernet card(s) or Routers. What should we purchase? What kind and how many.

Will a 600W PSU Be enough to power everything?

The server will be set up to Monitor Traffic between Our 3 PC's and the Rest of the world. It will also be used to store our projects we work on, and possibly hosting a test site. (We're all going into Computer Networking & Technology programs and 1 of us into Web Design)

Software Questions!
If we manage to connect THROUGH the server to the outside world, Is it possible to set up the server to reject certain sites/connections? We want this to be our primary protection against unwanted things.

Other Questions!
Will file sharing be fast? We work on videos/pictures a lot, and sometimes they can get real big, 1-2+ GB and we don't have all night to send it to each other. What speeds Could I achie... Read more

Answer:Proper Lan Setup Q's.

Sounds like you all are a bit green to servers and networks. So my suggestion is to NOT setup a server as your proxy/router to the internet/outside world. You're just asking for trouble if you don't have the expertise to properly lock down the server. Placing data which is sensitive on a server with direct access to the internet is also asking for trouble.

The simplest way to provide internet connectivity and to keep your systems secure is to throw your run of the mill router in front of your devices.

Question: a proper desktop

What is a proper desktop?
Does Windows 8 have a proper desktop?
Is Windows 8 better than any of the following?
Is Windows 8 a design by "marketing" or an improvement on the past?

Windows 8

Answer:a proper desktop

The term "proper" here makes no sense. "proper" infers there is some standard or qualitative measurement of what a desktop is, and there is no such thing.

As such, the rest of your questions are moot.

OK. So basically, I 'had' a program before where you could change the format of a vid file to a different format. friend is sending me some vids that are save into some kind of Apple software format. I want to make it a .WMV format. I had a program that changed this for me. But I can't remember the proper term for it. So now I can't google it and find a download lol. See my problem? So, I posted a message last week or so, about my laptop being broken and blue screening.
I sent it back to Acer once again, only this time they've sent it back and done NOTHING to it! Said they can't find any faults, now, I know this is complete bull because it's still broken.
Now, I'm dead confused because I don't know what to do. If Acer can't fix my laptop, what do I do? I've been without it for ages now, and it's starting to become a real pest. I'm quite sure that it hasn't just managed to fix itself, that's impossible right? Do I just keep sending it back to Acer?

i was using and ide harddrive on a machine at work. it is currently win98. i got access to a scsi controller card and and larger scsi drive. would i boot to a floppy and fdisk it just like an ide drive?

Answer:proper way to set up a scsi hd

Yes, you can fdisk and format a SCSI hard drive the same way as an IDE providing that you have installed it correctly with proper termination and ID settings. You also need to have it identified by your BIOS setup as "not installed". SCSI controllers usually come with a set of disk utilities for proper identification and low level formatting though low level formatting is usually not necessary since SCSI hard drives are pre-formatted at the factory.

I have a pixelview playTV pro (bt878 rev.8e) card and tried installing WDM drivers (jnstead if VxD), but found out they r for XP only. So i uninstalled the device driver via systems->device manager -> selected the TV card device and hit remove.
now i thought 'lemme put back ma original TV card driver' so whn i re-start windows (after uninstalling the device), windows automatically is picking up 'new hardware found' and installing it as WDM media device which isnt right for it!

Q) how can i stop this happenin as i'm able to install the old driver no longer, even with the original CD. ?

many thanks

Answer:TV driver not proper !!!!

Nobody else seems to be answering, so I guess I'll have a stab at it.

Go into the control panel after the machine installs the wdm drivers, highlight the devices in the device manager and choose properties, then navigate to driver details. Note the files used, then remove the devices, and delete the driver files so they won't be found again when you reboot. Also, check in the C:\windows\inf directory for any .inf files that have 878 or 848 in them and delete those files as well before you reboot.

Lastly, reboot and load the vfw drivers.

Guys, i would really appreciate your help

Im a newbie with windows and i have recently purchased a windows 10 connect tablet. When i got into the display settings all my resolution options are greyed out and i can't change anything.

I connected the tablet to my hdtv which has an output resolution of 1920x1080 according to the net. The options then become available in the display settings where i can change the resolution but the max i can get is 1280x800 therefore i get black borders around the image.

Sorry for my ignorance but I have read all the above and i still can't understand it. i had an intel device driver there but changed it to basic display in device manager. now when i go to switch back to intel its no longer in the list in device manager. Will other drivers work on this tablet?

In a nutshell i just want to get 1920x1080 resolution on my windows 10 connect tablet so that when i plug into my tv there are no borders. If the display resolutions match then it fits right? Tried the nvidia app but can't find devices.

Sorry again but I am at a loss and all the technical jargon above overwhelms me !

Thanks in advance

Answer:Can't set proper resolution

To start, you'll have to reinstall the Intel driver for the graphics. The basic version is just that, only good enough for basic usage of the machine. Other drivers probably won't work, have to be for the specific adapter. If can't find on the machine maker's site will usually have to do a Factory Restore.

Hello all,

I've always had this problem with my internet and now its gotten to a point where I have to solve it. The problem is, whenever I'm recieving a file off of mIRC and the speeds are in the 200 hundreds kbs Im fine. However, when the speeds increase to an abnormal constant rate of 450 kbs (which I have no problem with obviously, its awsome) and I get all excited.... the connection gets cut and I get the error:

Closing Connection: Unable to transfer data (Connection reset by peer)

I have an ASUS SLI DELUXE motherboard and am using the onboard NIC. Are there any reasons for this? I have this feeling that somehow I'm capping my download speeds?

Any support is greatly appreciated.

Answer:What is the proper name for a CD Burner

If you want a drive that burns and reads CDs, you want a CD-RW drive. They're not common nowadays though, they have been replaced by DVD drives.Any DVD burner will also burn CDs, and most DVD reader drives will also burn CDs.Check in the specification of any drive to see what it will record or write to, and what it will read from.Hope this helps.

Is the hard drive from this machine previously, or from another one with a XP install?

We really need to know more information about whether it worked before, what you did to it, and how this all happened if possible please.

Hi there,

Till now, my method of backing up files on my computer or external hard drive was to make copies of each file and save it to a DVD or another external hard drive destination. I know this is a primitive way of doing it and, as I am new to any "proper" methods there may be out there, I really want to learn. What programs are used to do this? What is the best, most efficient and successful software for this? I don't mind paying the cash - I'm a music producer and want to secure my data! Can anyone offer some programs and/or useful tips?

I'd appreciate it much.

Answer:How To Do A Proper Back-Up

The best way is with a portable enclosure and software such as Acronis or Norton Ghost I like this one you set up an image of your PC you can also schedule it to do incremental backups of just the changes that you have madeThere are also free alternatives, that don't do quite as much but nevertheless prove to be handyCobian is one of them ver. 9 don't try the BETA

My brother's computer had an apparently catastrophic failure last night. He turned it on after our geriatric technoamish father forced a hard shut down (Dad didn't know that it wasn't interchangeable with a proper shut down procedure, apparently) and...well, this exact pattern of errors occurred:

Remove Smart Defragmenter (Uninstall Guide)

My brother was panicking pretty hard over the fact that all of his data seemed to have vanished into thin air, so we ended up taking his hard drive out of the tower and plugging it into another computer via USB docking station to check that all the files were still on there. (They were.)

Here's where the real problem starts: now that we've put his hard drive back in his tower, it won't boot at all. We power it on, but the monitor goes immediately to sleep and nothing happens.

We didn't discover that the original error was a virus-related problem until I was Googling what he could remember of the error messages he'd gotten and found the page linked above.

The computer in question is an eMachines ET1331G-03W with an ECS MCP61PM-GM motherboard, AMD Athlon II X2 235e Dual-Core processor, running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

Any help would be appreciated.

Proper backup protocol of a domain controller with DNS/DHCP/file server and active directory.

Thought of posting in Data Storage Systems, but this is more of a NetAdmin question.

mainly I want my windows install and active directory backed up. I'd hate to have to recreate it all if it went south.

I have a 136GB raid-1 for OS, and a 1.4tb raid-6 for files. OS is physically only around 40GBs of data, and the Files are only 1000GBs with user shares, and such.

10 disks total. 7 stripped in file, and 2 mirrored in os. 1 hot spare.

What's a proper way to backup the Windows Server 2003 enviroment?

Right now I come onsite early and drop the server at 3AM monday morning and image the system with Acronis. Is there a way to schedule this?

And I have windows backup, with BackupAssit backing up the files... BUT! it's a lot of files, and the backup runs about 36 hours. :/ so It's almost always running a backup on the domain controller.

What do I need to do?

I just have Lacie Quadra drives that I swap out for backups.

How Can I A: properly backup a windows server 2003 enviroment with AD roles.
and B: speed up my file backup

Answer:Proper backup of a DC with AD

I used this guide a few weeks ago to back up my domain controller:

Hi all,
I put this in here because I'm going to be installing XP today.

I want to do do a full wipe of my hard drive but I forget how to do it?

I'm going from win98 to XP, so the install will be a full one. As for drivers. The XP advisor said that my Display adapters for my Hercules 3D Prophet 3 Ti 200, but of course it would it only has the 98 drivers. SO I'll do the install of XP then add the XP drivers to it once I got it up.

Thanks for the advice.

The fan in my T30 suddenly started to make noise.  I removed it and found that the stator assembly, which is pressed into the aluminum case, had become loose.  I bonded it back in uisng Loctite 603 (available from McMaster Carr) and it held properly.  I applied 5VDC to the red and black wires, and the fan worked fine on the bench.  It drew about 300mA, which agrees with the label on the fan.I reinstalled the fan with appropriate thermal grease on the CPU.  Upon startup the fan runs for a very short while and then shuts off.   I seem to remember the fan running all the time at a low level, and sometimes going into "high gear" when the computer got hot.  Is my recollection wrong ?  Does the fan only come on at elevated CPU temperatures?  I do not get any "fan error" message.  I have not run the laptop for an extended period to see if the fan come on for fear of causing damage.  Words of wisdom?TIA,Dan

I created a new HJT folder that way but I do want to be sure I do it properly. I am running XP. Do you have any suggestions? Please excuse my ignorance.

Answer:proper hjt installation?

Welcome to Major Geeks!

Thus instructions should have said right click Start and select Explore.

You don't need them now anyway. We have put a new form of HijackThis on our download link. If you download it from us, it is named hijackthis_sfx.exe which you can just run. It will automatically extract and defaults to creating and installing it like the below

C:\Program Files\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe

You will just need to rename HijackThis.exe to analyse.exe

I am running Windows XP Prof.
I have a few items such as realsched and trueplay, adobe updt check, etc
that I wish to remove from the startup services. I started msconfig,
and unchecked these items from the startup services. Then clicked
on "OK" and rebooted the PC.

When the PC comes up, I get this message:
"The System Configuration Utility is currently in
Diagnostic or Selective Startup mode,
causing this message to be displayed and the
utility to run every time Windows starts.

Choose the Normal Startup mode on the General tab
to start Windows normally and undo the hcanges you
made using the System Configuration Utility."If I choose "Normal startup" it loads everything. I thought
choosing "Selective startup" should not pop up this message
nor start the unchecked items, because under "Selective
Startup" there is a check box for "Load startup Items".

I have read through a couple of tutorials for MSCONFIG but
they don't talk about this aspect. They just mention that it
is a diagnostic tool and how to uncheck services.

How do I get rid of this message from popping up everytime I restart the PC?
Any guidance will be apprecaited.

Answer:Need help with proper use of MSCONFIG

Hi and Welcome to TSF

Place a checkmark in the box in the left bottom corner so the Selective startup will not show at every boot

Question: proper driver for

I got a notice today :  Routine Customer Advisory - Mar 27 2017 HP ProBook 645, 655 G1 and 725, 745 and 755 G2 Notebook PCs - Stop Errors Are Displayed on a Blue Sc...  Remedy = SP78044 Oddly just yesterday I inadvertentely deleted my network driver.  I have an EliteBook 745 G2  model # L6M62UP #ABAB.I went to HP Software and drivers and downloaded the recommended driver for Windows 10 64 bit = SP78044. But it refused to work.  I downloaded the driver executed it, saved and restarted (no driver). Tried again, and usied the testing and auto resetting of the driver.  Failed to install. So I remembered the original driver was 32 bit and downloaded he Windows 7 32 bit driver sp76906. It too needed to be installed and then tested and the adjustments to the driver were accepted and installed. On reboot this worked whereas SP78044 did not. The operating system: is Windows 10 Enterprise Version 1607. Perhaps this result is due to the processer which is an AMD A8 Pro-7140B R5.

Question: Proper.exe Deleted

I think I just did something really stupid. Our Director was having problems with viruses on her computer and every time upon reboot, they would get the pop up message:Cannot find C:\Windows\system32\proper.exeI would close out this popup and everything started to run fine. I looked up this application and it described it as something that will show fake security alerts: ran adware and spybot clean and sweeps, but the pop up would still upon reboot or logins. So I did a search in the registry and found it at:C:\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\WinloginFor "Shell" the Value DAta was:Explorer.exe C:\Windows\system32\proper.exeso, I deleted this value!!!!Now, only a blank screen comes up with no icons. It is just the Windows Desktop background. Can anyone show me how to unf*$! myself?

Answer:Proper.exe Deleted

Press Ctrl-Alt-Del to get the Windows Task Manager to open.
Click on File, then on New Task (Run)
In the box that pops up, type "explorer.exe" (without the quotes) and press Enter.

This should restore your Desktop
If that works, backup your registry immediately!!!
Then go to Start, then to Run, then type in "regedit" (without the quotes) and press Enter
Navigate to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Once there, right click on an empty area of the right hand pane and select New, then select "String Value"
Type "Shell" (without the quotes) into the key that is created
Then double click on it, and enter "explorer.exe" (without the quotes) in the Data Value field - and click OK to save the changes.
Reboot and your desktop should open up normally.

Let us know if the error message comes back - there's another way to remove it.

Morning all, I have a little annoyance and was wondering if anyone on here could provide a good solution.I have got a 2100 XP with 512 DDR which has got a 60GB hard drive and soon to be installed 120GB hard drive both running at 7,200RPM. The problem I have got is how do I successfully set these 2 drives up to suit my way of working. I am finding that I have to reboot and reinstall my OS all the time because I just get it so cluttered up I don't know where anything is!I have got windows 2000 pro which I am sticking with as it is the best for my means. I just don't like XP but I wouldn't mind playing with it I suppose. Once solution I had was to partition the 60GB drive into 3 x 20GB partitions and have win2k on one, xp on the other and the third one for backups via Norton Ghost and then I have 120GB for storage. What do you lot suggest? Anyone in a similar position?

Answer:The best way to go about proper storage

I have a 60Gb main drive and a 20 Gb Secondary. The main drive has my Windows XP installation on it.The secondary is partitioned into two other drives.1 x 2Gb for the Swap File1 x 18Gb for BackupsThe 18Gb Drive has folder like Utilities - which contains copies for programs i use and have downloaded of the net (legally), Drivers - which contains all my drivers for my hardware, Backup - where a program called EZBack-it-up 1.2 click here has been set up to copy My Documents and various other settings to, Patches - which contains software patches i have used, Windows XP CD - copy of my Windows XP CD etc etcBut then again i'm really fussy on how i store stuff on my PC. If i need a program then i know exactly where its going to be....

I have Belkin N1 vision and connected to it by ethernet a W7 (64bit) PC, and also connected by ethernet an XP (SP3) machine. I also have wireless connections for a W7 (64bit) laptop and an XP (SP3) laptop.
Problem has been from day 1:
W7 desktop (ethernet) only sees all other devices on network as media devices.
I have ensured the following:
All machines belong to same named workgroup.
W7 machine is set to work network (as opposed to homegroup)
File sharing is enabled on all machines.
No firewall software running on any of the machines.
Have tried disabling AV software - no help.

The W7 desktop is not visible at all on the network to any other machines. However, all 3 other machines DO see each other.

What is strange is that if I reboot the router then everything is fine - the W7 desktop sees the other devices as computers. However, when the W7 desktop has rebooted - back to square one, and it only sees media devices. Pinging works fine - machines see each other ok.

I'm now officially stumped. Anyone else had this?

Answer:No proper visibility on network

Have you tried to update the firmware on your Belkin router yet?

There is also a good chance that your anti virus or firewall is causing the problem, sometimes uninstalling them is the only way to fix it. Try uninstalling the A/V software on the Win 7 machine and see if it helps.

I was an ENORMOUS idiot and rashly decided to download and run Combofix before knowing what I was getting myself into. I read a random post on Reddit about how great the program was for removing malware, and without much thought I ran the program. While it was working, I decided to do some research using my phone (since it temporarily disables internet), and soon realized I made a terrible mistake. But, my instincts told me it would be a horrible idea to close the program while it was already mid-operation, so I sat there in suspense, hoping my computer wouldn't explode and eradicate the entire human race. Anyway, I haven't noticed any immediate problems with my computer since running the program, although I have noticed a slight increase in speed.

Answer:What motherboard would be a proper swap?

What makes you sure that it's the motherboard?  That power supply is a dreadful, low quality unit so I wouldn't be surprised of that was causing problems.  Even if it isn't the issue I'd strongly recommend replacing it anyway before it does cause issues!

I got a new PC a few weeks ago and I am wondering about installation of software and drivers. The idea is to install each component at its time so that each one will interfere as little as possible with each other.

I have read that software should be installed in safe mode. I have found that my PC runs faster by doing so but there is a few things that bugs me. For example, when I try to uninstall software (either in safe or standard mode), the list populated includes only 50% of software installed on my machine, just like a whole bunch were not installed (but available through the start menu). Some programs installed in safe mode are not available in standard mode.

My questions :

- Is it true that you should install anti-virus and firewall only at the very end of your installation sequence?
- Should I install all drivers on the machine before installing any software?
- Some programs installed in safe mode are not available in standard mode. Why is that?
- Would you run Hijack this in safe mode also?
- Would you install all possible software in safe mode and install what remains in normal mode (or the other way around)?

Does anyone know what is the best order to lessen conflicts and error reporting. It would be great to have a faster and more stable machine.

Answer:??What is the proper installation sequence??

So i have a 4 post rack and im not in the IT field so im lack in my proper ways to do things.

I just got a new house and i have converted my rack to an av rack on one side but i want to put the patch panel on the other side. I ran the runs through the side and into the patch panel but it just hangs upside down when im punching in. Am i supposed to get to it from the back? Is there a way to swing them out? I just ordered a accually punch down tool and im going to get everything ready for when its in.

last house i punched in cables to each of the pcs in there then just had to get 1ft patch cables to the switch. It was pretty slick, is that ok?

Answer:proper way to run a patch panel

I just zip tie the cables to the loops on the patch panel and let it hang. My rack is a wall mounted swing out style but I still prefer to let it hang when I work on it.

I hope the title is not too deceiving, but I had trouble thinking of a better one that was not a mile long. I have two desktop speakers, no sub-woofer. Is the general rule o that it is best to have the audio source coming from the computer turned all the way up, i.e. system volume, YouTube slider, iTunes slider. Is it general rule that it is best to then use the physical knob on the speakers for the overall volume as long as the source is up as far as it can go?

Answer:What are proper audio practices?

One thing you don't want either at full as that can (and usually does) introduce distortion and other sound anomalies to crop up. What works for me (and probably most) is to find that happy medium with the volume on the speakers (for me it is around half way on the volume knob), and then control the volume from within Windows and/or the application being used (in my case I use the volume control on my keyboard).

Would be able to Cool efficently, but i am still unsure if I am correct.

Please let me know If those parts can cool efficently, and if not, what I need to add to my computer to do so.

Answer:Proper cooling equipment

Your cooling option is suitable to your gaming rig. I might offer you better cooling solution. Watercooling is best cooling invention around if you have lot of money in your wallet.

ATI 100-435805 Radeon X1900XTX 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 VIVO PCI Express x16 Video Card
ATI 100-435721 Radeon X1900 CrossFire Edition 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card (Does it compatible? Look closely at CrossFire Edition. You might better splurge out X1900 CrossFire instead.)

What is the proper way to apply cpu paste? I got some arctic silver 5 for my new 3200+ coming, and my brother told me to put a little spot on the middle of the heat sink, and when it is tightened down on the cpu, it spreads out over the cpu.

Answer:Proper cpu paste application

Your information is correct. Apply a small amount on the middle of your CPU's heatspreader, around the size of an uncooked grain of rice. When the HSF is securely fastened upon the processor, the pressure of the heatsink will spread the paste evenly across the entire contacting surface.

Looking to upgrade my Motherboard/RAM to unlock the potential for 16GB RAM. Currently my aged AM2+ motherboard is running at Max RAM of 4GB 800Mhz DDR2 running Athlon II x4 620 2.6Ghz AM3 95W CPU. Looked into an AM3+ motherboard shown here that supports my CPU as well as can be upgraded later on to an FX CPU: My CPU is linked here: know if 1600Mhz RAM would be too fast running at native clock of 2.6Ghz CPU?Here is RAM I am thinking of getting. Never had an issue with corsair:

Answer:Proper RAM for new motherboard and old CPU for best performance

It should run fine both with the old and new CPU provided you're running a 64bit OS...The one reservation i have is the MBoard itself...never had very good luck with them.Is there another such as ASUS or Gigabyte that would fit your budget ? ?Let us know.

it's not much help in posting a thread which readsHelp!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, or can someone Help me, when we get threads like that they are likely to be ignored. State what part of the computer is causing Problems such as "Win XP won't boot, or Hard Disk Failure" that way the more knowledgeablecan get to the problem quicker.

Answer:Please Post a Proper Thread

It has been said lots of times before, but there are people out there who don't know much about computers, so they don't know how to categorise their problem. I agree that something like: "I can't get my ........ to work" etc. is better than "Help". I always read threads that say help anyway because they do tend to come from people with little knowledge of computers. That is the way they learn.

I have a BT Business 500 broadband connection and i wan to share it between 2 laptops, so that one can be occasionally used for email/web browsing during the day and the other can be left downloading from kazzaa/irc/bittorrent/normal http. I also want to access the one that is downloading all day from home with gotomypc.

I was going to buy this:modem/router becuase bt supplies a usb modem (and it is CRAP! i have to reinstall it evrytime i boot up!)

but then when i was setting up the connection manually because the crap CD from bt dosent work properly it struck me: this isnt proper adsl! i cant set it up from either of the normal broadband options, instead i have to select a normal connection, select the broadband modem , leave the phone number blank and then enter my log on details. it still runs at 576 or so kbps.

so then i thought that maybe i dont need a proper broadband router if it isnt a proper broadband connection! aha! maybe i can get away by getting a cheapy router and using that will it work i wonder?

can anyone help me in my dilemma?

also i will need it to work with bittorrent, kazaa, irc, gotomypc, normal http downloads

also i am in the UK! plz note most things will be the same but possibly not! lol

does anyone know of any cheap uk broadband isp's? i got 512k but im thinking of getting 1/2mbps

Hi, can anyone tell me what should be the proper way to format my C drive and reinstall XP?
If I try to install window FROM my current window, it wouldn't let me format my c drive, it keep asking if i wanna partition my drive which I don't. There is no format option for me to do that and if I continue without format, i will have 2 windows on top of each other causing system errors.

What should I do to format the drive? and then reinstall?

As soon as you get home with your computer:

Dont install the antivirus software that pops up with instuctions to install.
Should be done at the end and this software, although probably free for a while,
will cost money down the road and is probably not the best.

Windows updates should be done immediately as you are vulnerable to problems
until updated; be sure to include office updates.

Adobe reader should be updated, the most recent version is a sandbox version which
reduces virus vulnerablity to your PDF files.

This is also the opportunity to download Adobe Flash Player

Download an alertative browser; ie FF or Chrome etc. In the event of problems with IE.

Remove any unwanted program bloat. They will slow up your computer and probably
cost money in the future.

Download your antivirus; Microsoft Security Essentials is suggested.

Make your recovery disc.

Now enjoy the internet.

Steps that I did not notice on the guide include:

Running a scan disc before doing a defrag

Using Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes.

Making System Restore points, at least once a week

Makaing a system Image once a month (varies by user)

Your additions are very good.

I noticed in the article you linked that they mention using a vacuum inside the computer case. This is a very bad idea, unless the vacuum is an ESD (static free) one.

I personally never clean my registry with Windows 7. It seems to do well enough on its own. I messed up a Vista install badly that way, and I've never forgotten that.

I'm on a iPhone please bare the spelling mistakes.

Current Situation - I have reset my bios after a crash and tried to reinstall my xp oem, but I can't get past the validation key code, because I couldn't find it, I phoned ms customer support and the lady told me to phone hp or Dell about it, but my pc was custom built 3-4 years ago, so I can't get a product key.

So I've been talking with my friend and he says that he can send me a program or link to torrent file to download program to remove the verification, so I bought a flash drive and I'm going to talk with him later about

So What Should I Do? (i have a 4gb flash drive that isn't formatted btw)

- I'm considering just downloading a cracked xp off a bit torrent site, so I don't have to deal with useless piracy prevention activation garbage. I don't care that I will lose my files do to them being redownloadable & transferable from steam & my iPod classic

- I know hard forum doesn't condone piracy but I was considering pirating 7, is it a better running os, I just don't want to experience more crap

- Should I just go with my friend and try the verification remover, has anyone tried this before

Also - I've never used a flash drive before would it be okay to put a os and driverson the same drive, do they need to be partitioned or in seperate folders

Thanks for reading till the end

Answer:What should I do? (to detailed for Proper title)

Hello there! I was recently referred to these forums by a friend. He mentioned that someone may be able to help me.
I'm running Windows XP on a Compaq Presario SR1303WM.

A few nights ago (Saturday, actually), my computer started acting a bit odd. I use MSN Messenger and was surfing the web when all of a sudden MSN signed off. I received an error message (80072efd), saying that it couldn't connect. When I went to look it up, I found (much to my dismay) that I could not connect to Google, Wikipedia, Walmart, Ebay, and several other sites. Some of my favorite sites were loading (but I think that may have been because they were cached. Oddly enough, it was a forum, and the posts were reloading).

Well, I finally went through AOL search on my homepage (I'm on CableOne broadband, but it directed me to that from the homepage), and read something about the 80072efd thing being a virus. With the little intermittent breaks inbetween the loss of connection (and bear in mind, all of the lights on my modem were showing proper connectivity, and showing a sent/received connection, like usual), my friends referred me to several anti-virus programs (AVG, Spybot, Ad-Aware, Trojan Remover, to name a few). After deleting a few entries, I had assumed my computer was cleaned (and last night, I did a full scan with AVG, spanning over 195,000 files, finding ZERO infected).

Even so, my connection (which works like a CHARM when MSN and those websites connect) has gone out three time... Read more

Please help me understand the proper configuration. I don't just want to get it right, I want to understand why one is the proper model and why the others aren't.

I can't help but think a lot of people may write it really won't make a difference but I'm sure one is standard, there's got to be a logic to this and that's what I'm aiming for.

In case my quick write-up isn't clear, the switches are distanced apart by walls that can be drilled through but that will take several days of crawlspace work and sheet metal drilling.

Thank you, all.

Answer:Please advise me on the proper LAN config herein

I'm going to start with ABC. In my opinion, A is correct. It seems closest to the Cisco Hierarchical Model. Your managed switch is acting as the distribution layer, and your dumb switch and POE switch are the access layer. Your Router pretty much acts as the Core layer. If you really want to go by the book, your distribution and core layers should have redundant devices if it's within budget.

Now D: If you want LACP, I would do model A with however many 1Gb connections between each device.

Can someone tell me what is the proper setup for 2 NIC cards in 1 PC? My office is going to DSL and all PCs will use NICs connected to a router. However, 2 of the PCs are linked together via NIC cards and a 5 port hub. They need to stay together but also need to be able to access the internet. Currently, they connect together via the NIC and hub, and access the internet via 56k modem.

Can I just install the new NIC cards and configure them as I would any other NIC card? Or is there some protocol I need to insert to keep them distinct.

I should mention not all the PCs are the same. All are Pentiums but some are Dells and others are no-name brands running PIIs.

Thanks to anyone who can help with this.

Answer:Proper setup of 2 NICs in one PC

Is there an uplink port on the hub. If so you can leave them connected just use the DSL line in the uplink port.

Hello all, just purchased two new LCD panels and it's getting time to clean them. With my old CRTs I always just used a paper towel with some rubbing alcohol on it, is that safe for the LCD screen? I know when I bought the monitors the sales guy tried to sell me some monitor wipes for $9 but I figured I'd ask here first since a bottle of rubbing alcohol is like .99 cents and will last a LONG time

Answer:Proper way to clean an LCD panels?

Don't use alcohol full strength, dilute it 50/50 with water. Don't use paper towels, use a lint-free cloth.

The wipes are pricey, but they work. $9 is crazy though. I bought mine for $2-3.

Hello,First of all, terribly sorry if this is the wrong topic to post it in, I've look over the options and figured this would suit to my question.I've been a regular user of my PC (and consoles) for over the last decade. However, I have never looked into the hardware of it, reasoning that i don't need to know it to play computer games. While this is true, the time has come for me to buy a new computer, instead of letting someone else do it for me.I watched a couple videos on you-tube, looked things up on the internet, but in the end I'm still not satisfied with my knowledge, and the people i know that have knowledge of it, simply give me options but are reluctant to give information why and how i would make the given decisions. To sum it up (TL;DR):I want to buy a new PC, yet I'm unfamiliar with the hardware. Here is a description of the products i wish to buy:Monitor,Case,Everything inside the case,Windows + Office (can buy it apart from the rest of the product)For this, i have <1000 euros to spend. It doesn't need to push as close to 1000 as possible, around 800-900 will be fine for me. however, if you feel that the last upgrade will definitely be worth it, go for it. <1000 definitelyPeople have advised me that Windows 7 is the way to go, if that's not true, please correct me.The game that i play, and will continue to play for (at least) the next year will be:Heroes of Newerthwhenever it comes out: Guild Wars 2, Diablo 3... and i have ... You are bound to get a great deal of suggestions based on the preferences of each person. That may ultimately not advance the lessening of your confusion. If i may suggest you 1st need to sit down and try to define what your "total" computer needs are. Both present and future to the extent that you can look ahead. You have done a good job of defining the "gaming" requirements and they on their own do eliminate what might have been recommendations. Now if you can provide us,after you contemplate on it, the same kind of criteria for the rest of your needs the suggestion will become much more defined to those needs. I think your attitude of taking more control of the ultimate decision and choice is an excellent one. Come back with more of your need definitions and we shall offer our suggestions.truenorth

I was told this; boy have we all heard that before. Question, is it true if you load a program from a CD that it should be removed with that CD. It remove it more completely that using add/remove off of the control panel? Is this is true and if so; why?

Answer:The proper way to remove a program

The only programs that I know of where the CD is required for removal...are versions of MS Office.

Even those3 will start the removal from Add/Remove Programs and users will then be prompted to insert the necessary CD.

When a program is properly installed, those files generally includes the installation of the necessary utility for uninstallation of that program.

I cannot really tell you why MS Office is different .

Upgrading Wi-fi cards in Lenovo is bit tricky as Lenovo uses a whitelist stored in BIOS for certain hardware like Wi-fi, WWAN etc.

Had Infinity installed yesterday which means we're up from our awful 3mb speeds to around 35ish. A partner in my household is using a laptop downstairs and it's getting the full speeds, no problems.

However, upon plugging in a wireless adapter upstairs in a PC, it's not getting the full speeds, not even close. A mixture between 1mb and on one occasion about 8mb. The speedtest is showing something like 400ms too. I stick a wire into the PC and it's fine, around 30 or so ms and hitting the full speeds available. The wireless adapter is a Phillips, never really had any problems with it before, not that I know of anyway.

Any ideas of solutions or reasons for this?

If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and install the program.
You will now need to take a screen shot and copy that back to the working PC and attach the screen shot in a reply on the forum here.
Direct link to the program is here

{If the above link does not work heres another link,77196-order,4/download.html}

Then run and install the program - on a wireless enabled PC/Laptop
if you get an error - You need will need to have NET Framework installed for the WiFi Inspector to function.
On windows 8 - (i do not have windows 8) but, it would appear that, When you first try to run, you may get a message that .net framework is needed, and included in that message is a link to download/install.

This system is new and I can vouche that this is not anything to do with the OS since it's been present for both OS installs (XP + Win2003) since the birth of the server. The server randomly won't restart, then after a few retries it loads without a problem. Usually the problem exists only upon reboot, but last night we noticed that the system was unpingable and had crashed, when we called our datacenter for help they informed us of the current state the system was in with the above error. After reading up on this error I noticed a few people got around it by a normal cntrl-alt-del from the error screen, which works and reboots the server normallly, but we can't do this remotely unfortunately. When I went down to the datacenter to take a look at the machine I noticed the bios lost some of it's settings for raid and couldn't reboot. This was only when a cntrl-alt-del didn't work.

You took out the 7600GT and used the on-board video? Video cards can fail any time for many reasons. Somtimes you can see damage, most times you can't

OK, I just went to Fry's earlier to replace my rather crappy original "Hynix-brand" PC2-5300U 1Rx8 512MB x 2 RAM memory (not sure about the Mhz speed) that came the Dell Dimension E521 PC with the AMD 64 (x2). I upgraded it to a "Patriot-brand" PC2-5300LL 677mhz 2GB x 2 4-4-4- 12 1.8. So I could use it for Photoshop CS4 and so I could play Flight Simulator without the terrible lag.

It's the cheapest RAM they have and the "tech-guys" there have no idea what those numbers and letters mean at all. They actually got me a notebook memory at first. : (

Anyway, how would I know if the one I got is compatible with my motherboard's clock speed and such stuff like that? Also, why does Windows Vista Premium always show 25-30% less memory than the actual memory size? I haven't assembled a computer so I have no idea on the proper upgrades. I need info ASAP.

Thanks! : )
