Scope of Avast Hardened Mode

Question: Scope of Avast Hardened Mode

Got Avast on a couple of PCs and I have a question about hardened mode. Anyone know what exactly changes with hardened mode on aggressive compared to moderate or off? Also, will alerts generated by hardened mode say hardened mode on the alert? Seem to remember seeing that once at some point a while back. I also have CyberCapture enabled btw.

I have this one PC rigged to the gills with Avast. Only thing not maxed is "Scan files with default extensions". I had backed off of "Scan all files" after reading some of you guys' comments in various threads.

After going through the settings, I have realized I have basically turned on everything else at the highest settings. It's kind of an old system w/ 4GB and a core2quad processor, so I wouldn't mind backing off on some things. Comodo Firewall is also on the PC (@cruelsister but HIPs on Safe), so I don't know how much of it I need. On the main PC, I've grown accostomed to using NVT ERP as a fallback for Comodo (CFW still only a moderate<->high trust rating for me so far reliability-wise), but it's not installed on the avast PCs. Because of this, I tend to go a little bit hard with protection when supplementing CFW.

Answer: Scope of Avast Hardened Mode

Found this Hardened Mode Avast thread from 2013 explaining hardened mode.

@RejZoR explained the 2 modes quite well.

Hardened Mode: Moderate
Under normal conditions, if avast! decides that some file is too suspicious by various characteristics, it then throws it into the DeepScren for further scanning. But if Moderate Hardened Mode is enabled, avast! automatically blocks files that are detected as suspicious by preliminary analysis.
In most cases DeepScreen checks the file and if it doesn't find obvious malicious problems with it, those files are started automatically after analysis. But Hardened Mode (Moderate) blocks it right there.

Hardened Mode: Aggressive
This mode behaves a bit differently. It actually relies on analysis on a very small scale and mostly relies on a huge whitelist database located in avast! Cloud. If file is located within the cloud and flagged as safe, it will allow to run it. If it's not found or marked as bad, it will block it. So, at least based on my experience, Aggressive Mode is actually much more secure and also a lot less intrusive. Only time that it will cause problems is with some very rare old software or very very new software that isn't used by thousands of users. Usually some very specialized programs used by only few users.
Moderate mode often feels a bit too paranoid (despite its name) because it often blocks safe programs just because they exhibit local suspicious file characteristics that are basically ignored by the Aggressive mode.Click to expand...

Hope this helps you out a bit.

Hey Friends,

Please mention your Avast Hardened Mode Experience -

1. Hardened Mode - Aggressive or Moderate?
2. Ever blocked Windows Updates files or System files?
3. Mention blocked Programs/Upgrades/Updates (Mention Programs name)
4. Malware bypassed Hardened Mode on your system?

Thank You

Answer:Your Avast Hardened Mode Experience

Would chose aggresive. it use a cloud whitelist. moderate just blocks all unknown if im not wrong.
Never had blocked windows updates etc and used it 3 month. almost all well known progams are whitelisted but programs that are not well known get always blocked- not for novice users and abit annoying sometimes. had no exe bypass but some jr fiels and scripts could easy bypass hardern mode. but u have still the realtimeshield thats realy, realy good theses days.

Just now I test the harden mode with an EXE that can trigger the harden mode (aggressive) in the online case.
The following tests are conducted on my virtual machine running win 7 (32-bit).
I will reboot my virtual machine after each test.

Test 1: Online -> Offline

I first double click my EXE in the online case.
It is immediately blocked by the harden mode.
Then I cut off the network connection of the virtual machine and double click my EXE several times.
It is always blocked as long as I do not reboot the virtual machine.

Test 2: Offline -> Online

I first double click my EXE in the offline case.
It is NOT blocked by avast in such case.
Then I connect my virtual machine to the network and double click my EXE several times.
It is always allowed to run as long as I do not reboot the virtual machine.

Test 3: Online -> Offline -> Reboot -> Offline

I first double click my EXE in the online case.
It is immediately blocked by the harden mode.
Then I cut off the network connection of the virtual machine and double click my EXE several times.
It is always blocked as long as I do not reboot the virtual machine.
Then I reboot my virtual machine and keep my virtual machine offline.
This time my EXE is allowed to run when I double click it.

Test 4: Offline -> Online -> Reboot -> Online

I first double click my EXE in the offline case.
It is NOT blocked by avast in such case.

Users those use Avast Hardened Mode... plzz share your experience---

Which hardened mode you use & why?
Did you experience it blocking Windows Updates or system/critical files, etc...?
Do you experience it blocking much & so could be prob for average users?

I would like to know the general & hardened mode experience especially on Win 10 32/64.

Answer:Avast Hardened Mode Users Experience

I tested avast for about 3 months under normal computer usage and downloading some software triggered hardened mode blocking but mostly it was fine.

It has never blocked Win Updates.

As for #3 an average user should know enough to use hardened mode effectively. Although you are perfectly fine off with "softened" mode

How to Run Programs Blocked by Avast Hardened Mode (for All Users)
By @Huracan

Includes:

How to Configure avast Hardened mode
How to Protect avast with Protection control
How to Run Programs Blocked by Avast
Recommendations for inexperienced and experienced users
What is Hardened Mode? - Source
"Hardened Mode is a means of ?parental control? for executable files.

When enabled, it is always running in the background and checking every process launched on the machine. The evaluation of files is based on their reputation coming from the cloud (controlled by the VLab).

In the Aggressive Hardened Mode, only chosen executable files with known high ratings are allowed; the rest gets prevented from running.
On the other hand, the Moderate Hardened Mode blocks only files which have bad ratings (and those which have no ratings at all, due to being new).
This is useful for inexperienced users who do not always know what exactly they are launching."

How to Configure Avast Hardened Mode?
Users of Avast Free Antivirus (including Pro Antivirus, Internet Security and Premier) can all access this setting from the General Settings from the Avast UI. Once enabled, there are 2 settings available to choose from; Moderate or Aggressive - differences are explained above.

Click OK to save changes.

I just tried installing the new Avast R4 Beta, and as usual I tried installing over the top of the existing version,as suggested on the forums and in the Avast forum!
"Hardened mode" was on in the previous version, set to moderate
This is what I get:

In other words "Avast Hardened mode" in my eyes at least, cannot discern correctly when a program is safe or not with a default block policy!
I know I can setup an exclusion but I don't think this is an acceptable option!
Any opinions from other members appreciated!

Answer:Why Avast "Hardened mode" is faulty!

Yeah, it's a love/hate relationship with Avast.

What would be better against zero day malware? Cyber Capture or Hardened Mode set to Aggressive? I've read that Hardened Mode is very similar if not the same as a HIPS program so if i were to enable this would i not need an additional HIPS program?

Answer:What is better: CyberCapture or Hardened Mode?

CyberCapture isn't working properly yet (as expected of Avast ).

I would say that Hardened Mode is better protection.
As for what kind of Hardened Mode, I think Moderate is better. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, if I remember correctly, Moderate immediately blocks unknown files, while Aggressive only blocks suspicious files, that is, files that trigger sandbox analysis.

But, really, there should be no comparison against each other, since CyberCapture complements Avast's overall protection through improved detection.

Hello,

OS : WIndows XP SP3

My computer (actually on loan from my mother in law!) is taking ages to start and when it does, it is very slow to respond and even freezes. Eventually an Avast alert pops up and tells me it detected a rootkit called "Catchme". I didn't try to delete it, I don't know if I should have or even if Avast was right.
The PC was already slow when I first got it. I ran Malwarebytes before and it found a trojan.agent that was apparently deleted. I also ran JRT that found bad things too (tell me if you need the log).
When I run in Safe mode, the PC seems OK, more responsive.

Anyone to help me?

Thank you.

Answer:PC slow in normal mode, OK in safe mode, Catchme rootkit detected by Avast?

Hi,

I turned PC on this morning, it was still very slow to start, but the Avast message about the rootkit didn't come up this time! PC was still slow to respond though.
I decided to run AdwCleaner (saved on to USB key from my laptop and copied then on to the PC) just to see and it found 9 "bad" registry keys. I cleaned them and restarted the PC as prompted. PC seems a bit faster to repond now. I also ran Malwarebytes (quick scan) which didn't find anything.
Still think something is not right, can somebody help me check for rootkit or anything else please? Thank you

What are your thoughts about AVAST SafeZone and Pay Mode in AVAST Free Antivirus (latest version)?

To consider:

SafeZone is now free
SafeZone is based on Chromium builds
SafeZone includes AVAST built-in extensions

AVAST extensions can be enabled or disabled
Pay Mode protects your sensitive ID data from loggers

Answer:Avast SafeZone and Pay Mode? (Update: Bank Mode)

I am glad it is free now, but many complained because it installed by itself.
Chromium is secure as long as AVAST SafeZone uses an up-to date version.
The AVAST web-blocking has always been good, and with its anti-tracking that is also useful.
Some people may not like extensions so its good the user can choose whether to have them enabled or disabled.
Pay Mode again should be good as-long as it uses a secure version of Chromium and has its well-known sandbox/app-container.

It has supplemental protections against certain types of attacks.
Is a hardened AppGuard policy absolutely required ?

It is not an essential requirement. AppGuard even with the default policy when used properly in combination with default-deny user behaviors will protect the system.

We enabled hardened UNC paths in our environment and have ran into a weird issue.  We are no longer able to copy and paste within the same share.  There is no error, when you click "paste" nothing happens.  We have a department
that uses a custom application and that application makes a copy of a template before editing the newly created copy.  This process is now completely broken.  We only see it when copying/pasting from the same share.  If you copy/paste locally
or another share, it is fine.  I've been searching and cannot find any info on this issue.  As soon as we disable the unc path hardening, it works again.  Anybody have any ideas?

Self-explanatory title; Why was Passive Mode added to Avast? Was it highly requested or internally implement to improve compatibility with Windows Defender on Windows 10?

What are your thoughts and opinions on Passive Mode for Avast?

Answer:Why did Avast add Passive Mode? And is it needed?

I believe Passive Mode is simply a bypass for the whole "Uninstall other AV products" page that you get when you try to install a new protection suite over an existing one. For example, if you have EIS installed, and you try to install Avast, it used to inform you that EIS must be removed first. Passive Mode will bypass that and install Avast anyway with Passive Mode auto-enabled.

Not a whole lot of user posts about Passive Mode so far, but this seems to be the gist of it.

I was recently infected with zeroaccess, although not very seriously. The initial infection seems to have come from a dummy adobe update window that I clicked yes to. It was very convincing, this was the first time i have ever been taken in by a virus. The reason no huge warning bells went off in my head was that the 'update window' only appeared after i had finished browsing and had opened a pdf.

Anyway, the main symptoms were that McAfee security center would not turn on real time scanning, occasionally the firewall would also go down. I tried scanning with McAfee, but obviously that did not work. At this point system restore was not working. I downloaded and scanned using malwarebytes and that quarantined and deleted a trojan (trojan.phex.THAGen6 according to the log). I then ran malwarebytes in safe mode and deleted a whole more viruses, for some reason I have no log of that so I can not say which ones. After this system restore was an option, so I restored back to a point over a month before the assumed date of infection and after a reinstall of McAfee I was symptom free.

I thought I might have a rootkit hanging around in there somewhere, so I found some antirootkit tools (kaspersky, McAfee, Sophos, Avast, unhackme) and ran them. Although everything comes up clean in regular mode, when I ran avast antirootkit in safe mode it showed 7 rootkits but gave errors when trying to delete them. Sophos in regular mode found 2 of these (identified as parts of ze... Read more

Good evening. Download TDSSKiller.zip from Kaspersky from here and save it to your Desktop. You will then need to extract the file(s) from the zipped folder.
To do this: Right-click on the zipped folder and from the menu that appears, click on Extract All...
In the Extraction Wizard window that opens, click on Next> and in the next window that appears, click on Next> again.
In the final window, click on Finish
Please close all open programs as this may result in a reboot being necessary.
Double click TDSSKiller.exe to begin. Click Start scan and allow the tool to do just that. One the scan has completed, if the tool has identified anything allow it to carry out it's default action(s) - you'll need to click Continue where appropriate. Finally, if it prompts you to reboot your machine, please click Reboot Now and ensure that your machine does so.
If the scan finds nothing, please click the Report button and let me have a copy of the text file that opens. If you reboot your machine, the log, which i'd like to see, will be located at the root of you hard drive as C:\TDSSKiller.Version_Date_Time_log.txt.
Please check that you get the one with the right date and time.

Hey, it's me again.

Here's the story. I got the blue Avast! notification telling me to update my version, so I did. It downloaded, and asked me to restart my computer to finish the update. I clicked yes, and everything closed and shut down as normal. Though the trouble started as Windows was booting up again. I saw a black screen telling me Windows couldn't boot up, and gave me the list of boot modes to try. I was reading, so it just tried to start normally again, leading to a blue screen. It went away quite fast, so I couldn't catch what it said. I let Windows try again, and it led me back to the black screen. I hit enter to go into normal mode, but it led to a blue screen again. This time, I caught "DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL", or if not that, something very close. Next, I tried booting into safe mode with networking, which is where I am now. I don't know what to do, as I want to get into normal mode, but I don't want to just waste my time booting around.

(by the way, the update seems to have worked, as I see Avast! WebRep in my Firefox header)

I would appreciate any help with this.

Answer:XP will not boot into normal mode after Avast! update

If an update to your AV triggered the problem...my guess would be that your AV is providing the problem drivers.

If possible, I would uninstall it...reinstall it and then update/scan.

Just installed Avast and tried my first scan. But the scan froze several times and always at the start of C:\System Volume Information. I have removed the Tracking Log file from System Volume Information whilst in Safe Mode as that used to cause AVG to freeze also. I also seem unable to run Avast in safe mode. So questions are:How to work around freezing problem? How to operate Avast scanner in Safe Mode?PC details are: Dell 5100, Win XP SP2, Avast v. 4.8.1169, VPS v. 0805 18-0, Pentium 4 800 MHz, 512 RAM, ADSL connection, no messages appear at the freeze point.Any ideas?

Answer:Avast - Freezing and not running in Safe Mode

1) Have you fully removed any prior anti virus software ?2) Have you tried a boot scan ? To do this open avast then go Menu / Schedule boot time scan, select the drives you need to scan then schedule & reboot.

I am unable to use XP Mode with either AVG or Avast installed.

It was working fine for years with AVG installed, then all of a sudden whenever XP Mode was used, I'd get a blue screen and the machine would reboot. I uninstalled AVG, XP Mode and Virtual Machine. Reinstalled XP Mode and Virtual Machine and it works fine.
As soon as I reinstalled AVG it did it again.

I've tried the same with Avast and the same thing happens.

No, you'll need to install separate security programs in XP Mode. From click here:"Even though it is a virtual environment, it is still susceptible to the same types of malicious software as a real system, and having anti-virus software on the host system will not protect the virtual system."AFAIK, the two systems work independently of each other, so the their security programs won't clash. Question: IP Scope

I currently have SBS 2003 and i get an error message saying that:
"Scope 192.168.254.0, is 92 percent full with only 6 IP addresses remaining."

Can I add more IP to the scope?
Or have I encountered the end with the 75 max users/devices with the SBS 2003.

Can I just change the IP range by going to DHCP and right clicking on Scope then Properties and increasing the number as to where it ends?

Thank you.

Answer:IP Scope

I'm pretty sure that the device limit is only for concurrent connections not dhcp.
You should be able to just make the scope larger and you should be fine.

Users of Avast Free Antivirus. In the Settings under Popups, you do not get to uncheck this option.

Show popup offers for other Avast products: sends notifications about others ways you can improve your protection. You can disable this option only if you use a paid version of Avast Antivirus.
However under Perfomance with Game Mode, you get to Disable Visual Interruptions which states:
Pauses all Avast pop-ups, notifications and scheduled scans while you're playing.

Now my question is, if you add your most commonly used software, for example, your web browser, does Game Mode override any Avast Offers pop-ups making them remain hidden?

"Avast ENHANCED PROTECTION MODE" is a fake system security software that is considered as a Rogue. Question: Solved: C++ scope

I have an XML parser that creates Objects. A pointer to this is then added to a binary tree, but when the parser goes onto create the next object obvesly the first object goes out of scope and is deleted. How can I get around this? The objects HAVE to be stored as pointers.
Code:

Vehicle *vehiclePointer = new Vehicle();
vehiclePointer = &newVehicle;
theTree->insertNode(vehiclePointer);
//fine here, still in tree
}
//in tree but null here

Thank you so much

Answer:Solved: C++ scope

I guess you could try to just create the pointer, allocate memory for it, and then assign the value to the pointer as opposed to creating an object...

Greetings. I've been living with intensive cpu usage (and slow computer) for some time now but now I'm tired of it. Even as I type this, there is a latency between keypress and display. I'm not a tech newbie but must admit, I spent a lot of time trying to figure out what is happening and can't.

I look now to someone here to provide some advice. I've had this machine for a long time and don't want to wipe and reload please. I have a HiJxxthis log I can post and yes, you may roll your eyes when you see a few of the things running but maybe you will give me a pass on those.

Anyone have a couple of minutes to take a look for potential issues? I have tried MalWare, Spybot and AVG which all come back ok but something is not right. I am wondering if this could be a pretty high end logger that's really good at hiding? Or maybe a cheap one I'm just not bright enough to track down.
Platform: Windows XP SP3 (WinNT 5.01.2600)
MSIE: Internet Explorer v8.00 (8.00.6001.18702)
Boot mode: Normal

I'm up for feedback.

I created a new scope on my widows 2000 Server. Everything is working great for all win98 machines. However my Windows 2000 machines can no longer log onto the network. I get the message "The system cannot log you on this domain because the systems computer account in its primary domain is missing or the password on that account is incorrect." This message appears no matter what account I try to log in under. Please help with any suggestions.

A few months back I was running out of IP addresses so I created a new scope 192.168.30.1 to 192.168.31.255; I am running a parent domain with a child domain under it for a school; now when a pc receives an ip address from 192.168.31.x the network drives for the parent domain will not map and if it is not part of the parent domain it will not allow you to add it. However it the pc is part of the child domain and is assigned an 192.168.31.x ip the mapping works fine and you can join the child domain. When the pc received an ip from 192.168.30.x it works fine. Any idea on what I did to cause this? Is there a setting I forgot to check, etc?

Thanks in advance for any ideas of what I can check.

I just been dabbling recently with how networks work and setting up a Windows based Domain controller.
on my Server2k3 box I setup a DHCP sever static 192.168.2.1 and my Linksys Router 192.168.2.2.
Then I have it setup to distribute ip's starting @ 192.168.2.3. Added a Reservation for my fileserver @ 192.168.2.3. Now I assumed that any new computers that retrive a IP from the DHCP would start @192.168 .2.4...but they dont. they start at 192.168 .2.100.
Now this isn't causing any problems really or anything the network works, but I'm curious as to why this is.

===EDIT===
Yes I turned off the DHCP on the Linksys

The server is a AD W2k server running dhcp.
There are 4 client pc and 1 jetdirect printer. scope is set 192.168.254.100-151 w/ a reservation for the printer.

I noticed a DHCP error in event viewer stating that the scope was full. I looked at the leases and it only showed 5.

192.168.254.100 pc1
192.168.254.101 pc2
192.168.254.102 pc3
192.168.254.103 pc4
192.168.254.150 printer
I reconciled the scope and all the leases showed up. sure enough it showed all ip's in use, but all the ips that were not the orgional 5 show up as:

192.168.254.104 192.168.254.104. <ip> <ip> with no hostname or mac address.
If you delete them it just happens again over about a month. I already treid rc reating the scope. Any ideas?

Answer:W2K DHCP scope problem

Remove the reservation and set the jet direct printer to static. Check to see if there are any other devices on the network that could be pulling for DHCP addresses. Check the Eventlogs of the client computers to see if there is anything out of the ordinary with regards to obtaining an IP. Also, what is the lease time for that scope?

Hi Everyone,

I have a strange networking situation. Let me start by saying this situation is on a Domain, and that I am using Windows 2011 SBS and Windows 7 clients.

My server has a DHCP range of 192.x.x.150 to 192.x.x.199 - and all other I.P. addresses are static.

On a workstation located at I.P. 192.x.x.13 I am seeing an address conflict.

When I perform an "nbtstat -a 192.x.x.13" command from the server I am given the logical computer name of a staff members personal laptop.

Investigation of the laptop reveals that it is set to DHCP, and clearly the address of 192.x.x.13 is outside of my servers DHCP scope, so this I.P. should never be assigned, let alone in duplicate.

I Googled this topic before posting, and it was suggested that IPv6 could be having an adverse affect. I determined this because I performed a ping on the laptop and only got a MAC address back rather than an I.P. address.

However after unticking IPv6, and rebooting, the laptop is still causing havoc.

I can set a static I.P. address on the laptop, however this is not ideal.

If anybody knows of any way that I can stop this from happening it will be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards,

Davo

Answer:DHCP assigning address outside of Scope

Hi Everyone,

Further to my earlier post here is a screen shot of both ipconfig & Control Panel settings on the Laptop:

I have actually managed to fix this by -

1). Changing the IPv4 settings to static - and assigning the address in question (e.g.192.x.x.13)
2). Subsequently changing the IPv4 settings back to "Obtain an IP address automatically"

The laptop now reports an I.P. address of 192.x.x.174 (Preferred), which is actually within the DHCP scope of my Server!

Last week my Server decided to reset the DHCP scope to 192.x.x.1 to 192.x.x.255 (with a few "address excludes" added for good measure), I believe the reset resulted from Windows updates, so I am going to assume that this issue was a left over from last weeks "undiscussed" change!

Answer:DOS attack and IP address given by router outside scope

I think you may be connecting to the Guest Network, your router has that feature. Maybe the Guest Network uses a different IP address range.

An ACK scan and FIN scan are both scans: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_scanner#ACK_scanning . Technically they are not DOS attacks, although they will affect your network use if the hacker is not trying hide his attempts to connect by scanning slowly.

Hi

The Start Button does not do much, or so it seems to me.

There is no Start/Programs, no Start/Control Panel, etc.

For example, to get to Windows Update I have to revert to the Metro desktop
then type Windows Update in the search box etc.

Is there a configuration option I have missed?

Cheers

Daniel

Answer:Can the scope of the Start Button be increased.

Hello Daniel,

You could right click on the Start button for the Power User Tasks menu for more options.
Power User Tasks Menu - Open in Windows 8
You could also customize the Power User Tasks menu.
Power User Tasks Menu (Win + X) - Edit in Windows 8

If you like, here's a shortcut that opens directly to Windows Update.
Windows Update Metro Shortcut - Create in Windows 8

OR

Windows Update Shortcut - Create in Windows 8
Hope this helps,

OK - I have a problem. My home lan which is behind an IPCop firewall dishes out the following range to my green interface clients:

192.168.1.100 - .110

The problem is I am now working from home for the next two weeks (Linux Engineer) & I found that I am unable to VPN into my Intranet due to the fact that when I do connect via VPN, I am assigned 192.168.1.150 - .200 and because my home LAN and work LAN have the same scheme, it conflicts.

Should I change my home LAN to dish out a different internal IP range or do you guys have any suggestions?

I don't think this matters but this is a Cisco VPN and I am using "vpnc" to connect from my Linux machine and I also had a friend bring over a Windows XP Pro laptop and it still fails.

Thanks for any info!

Hello guys,

I use MS Excel 2010. In this app, I know that using Formulas > Define names > define name it is possible to name a cell (or range). At that dialog box there is a scope rectangle which if I choose the entire sheets scope (workbook) so it's said that this name is valid for the entire workbook. First what does this valid mean please? Then, OK, I think I understand it but why when I name cell A1 (in the worksheet1 for example) to "first" its name on that worksheet is valid, that is its name, here "first", is shown in Name Box, but although I've used workbook scope, when I change the worksheet (to worksheet2) and active cell A1, just A1 is shown there not the put name, "first"!?

Answer:Define names in workbook scope

If you name A1 "First" in worksheet1, the name is a valid name that defines the cell reference worksheet1!A1.

The name is not allocated to any other range of cells.

So, A1 in worksheet2 is still A1. Setting the scope of the name to global does define the same name for the same cell(s) in any other worksheets.

However, in worksheet2 you can reference the name "First" and it will use the contents of the named cell(s) from worksheet1.

An Example;

In Worksheet1 A!:A3 I enter the contents..

A1: Apples
A2: Oranges
A3: Lemons.

Then I define the name "Fruit" that covers that range of cells. I also set the scope of the name to be workbook (Which is the default)

Now I go to worksheet2 and I create a data validation list object and I tell it to use the "Fruits" named range. I create this list in Worksheet2 at B2 (any cell would be fine, just using B2 as an example).

When I click on the list drop down in worksheet2!B2 it will show me apples, oranges and lemons.

Had I not used the workbook scope I could not have used the name in any but the named scope sheets. Eg. If I had selected Sheet1 as the scope, then that name can only be referenced from within sheet1

Hi, I am new to this forum.

In our company we have 200 users. we have a Domain Server which is also an AD and DNS which has IP Address 192.168.0.1.

All the other users are assigned from 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.205
But now we are recruiting 200 people more in our head office.
How do we go and assign IPs for the users, provided they should be in the same network.

Please help me on this issue. Even if i have to change IP its ok.

Good Day to all. I hope you are fine and doing well.

I need your help about the Establishing the CERT/CSIRT

I am in phase of planning the CERT Process and Team. I will appreciate if you can help me for the following questions:

1. What Scope the CERT should have ideally it should address the incidents related to the information security i.e. Confidentiality/Integrity/Availability, but what will be the role of CERT in case of Physical Security Breach or Theft of Critical Hardware?

2. Should CSIRT also come in action in case of any IT Security Policy violation for example Pornography although it does not hit the three pillars of the IT Security CIA but it is against the company policy so who is going to take care of such policy violation?

3. How can I define the categorize incidents levels should I do it at high level for example DoS Attack, Hacking, Virus and Malicious Program and Unauthorized Access to Information or I should be more specific and define each incident in detail.

Answer:Establishing Scope of CERT/CSIRT

2. Considering that porn sites are known to install malware, I think CSIRT should come and do a scan. If nothing malicious is found, the team could at least wag a finger at the user. But, porn surfing can also be taken care of with a content filter at the gate.

3. Are you trying to assign priority to incident response? What do you want to use the levels for?

First off let me say that any help I find here will be greatly appreciated considering I have never seen a virus problem this bad before!

Imagine if you will a simple family pc (gateway, xp, p4... this is all I know) allowed to roam the net without one antivirus program or one user with the knowledge to stay away from certain things when surfing the net. This is what has been happening to my good friends family computer. They were having a problem with their pc and asked if I could take a look at it. I have been able to research several problems of my own in the past and figured that maybe I could get somewhere on their pc.

As I sat down at the computer with my friends sister sitting next me. (She was the prime user (and abuser) of the pc.) I waited for the pc to boot up and she tells me that the last time this happened her father brought the pc to a "computer guy" who fixed it but had told them he had never seen so many viruses, worms, trojans, and other assorted malware. She also said that he would not bring it back to him because of the amount of money he paid to have it fixed the first time!

Now the problem with the computer!

It boots up windows only to have explorer crash immediately and a window keeps popping up directing me to use system restore to fix whatever is happening. I hit ctrl+alt+del and a ridiculous unending stream of processes are controlling the computer. It was impressive! I go back to the window about the system restore and after s... Read more

My question is without being able to scan or view anything or execute any kind of program on this pc, is it possible to obtain, create, or conjure a disk that upon start up would start the process of cleaning this disaster or put the computer in state so I can start to disassemble the tangled virus web inside this thing.

Today's infections are much too intertwined with the OS, and often interfere or target tools. So, while I can appreciate your desire to help this friend, for any of us to provide you with any instruction whatsoever, without seeing proper diagnostic scans beforehand, would be nothing but reckless and irresponsible on our part.

Don't they have Windows Installl disc? Generally speaking, given their past and current surfing habits, I've no doubt the security of the system has been severely compromised and can't be trusted. One is better off reformatting and reinstalling the OS.

If they do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, they need to get to a known clean computer and change all passwords to accounts, from that clean machine. It would also be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of the situation.

However after unticking IPv6, and rebooting, the laptop is still causing havoc.

I can set a static I.P. address on the laptop, however this is not ideal.

If anybody knows of any way that I can stop this from happening it will be greatly appreciated.

I'm trying to do some regression testing on this plugin, and apparently once it is broken, it stays broken. Even trying to do a reinstall of the plugin doesn't help. It's a sneaky lil' piece of software though--it installs a system level Windows service under the name Copy Safe Helper Service (C:\WINDOWS\System32\CSHelper.exe), and creates a folder called "plugins" in C:\Program Files, under the folder name of the web browser (i.e. Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, etc.). It adds a bunch of registry keys which a lot of them do not get deleted (nor the Windows service) after uninstalling the CopySafe plugin.

The thing is that, whenever end-users have issues with installing the plugin, and they try to re-install the same plugin, they can't. However, this happens rarely. Out of 50 end-users, 1 or 2 get this problem.

Kind of shady. Either way, I'm trying to break down this plugin so I can better understand it (it's part of my job to support it, and the vendor is not being helpful with shelling out information).

I'm using the current applications to work on this testing:

Registry Workshop
Process Monitor
ResHack

That's about it for now.

Thanks for any assistance.

Hey guys, I was just wondering if anyone knew how to fix a problem that I've been having with the sniper rifle scopes on Hitman: Contracts. The scopes work fine on the training level and the first level, but after that whenever I try to use the scope, it shows up as either completely black or extremely blurry. Please, someone help me!

I noticed that Nvidia is blocking this ip address:239.255.255.250 from doing something using UDP port 1900. I did a who is on that IP and it came back as being owned by IANA. When I looked at the RFC 3171 it pointed me to RFC2365 for info about that block. It says something about being used for Administratively Scoped IP Multicast. Exactly what is this and what is it for?

There have to be some net techno geeks that have the answer.

Answer:Can someone explain this IPv4 multicast scope stuff?

In the world of IP networking, you have two major types of packets: unicast (one sender, one reciever) and broadcast (one sender to anybody on the same subnet). However, there is a not-real-common type of third packet: multicast.

in multicast, everyone who wants to recieve the packets gets a special IP on a special network. The sender sends the packet once to their router, and their router duplicates the packets to each of the people who want to get it. This way, the sender only has to send one copy total (as opposed to unicast, where they'd have to send one packet per reciever).

Running Windows 7, periodically I get an events log message: "The DHCP allocator has disabled itself on IP address 192.168.2.1, since the IP address is outside the 192.168.137.0/255.255.255.0 scope from which addresses are being allocated to DHCP clients. To enable the DHCP allocator on this IP address, change the scope to include the IP address, or change the IP address to fall within the scope."
I want to continue using the 192.168.2.x /255.255.255.0 range so how and where do I change the DHCP allocator scope.

Answer:Setting DHCP Allocator IP address scope

I do see a discrepancy in the IP address:

192.168.137.0
255.255.255.0

192.168.2.x
255.255.255.0

The 255's mark which portion of the IP address is reserved for network routing and which portion is for computers/devices.

Basically, your DHCP server is handing out IP addresses for the 192.168.137.x network, but the Network card of the server is configured to be on the 192.168.2.x network.

I recommend changing the DHCP server scope to remove 192.168.137.0/255.255.255.0 and to hand out IP addresses for 192.168.2.0/255.255.255.0

Hopefully this makes sense.

When I name a range on an excel spreadsheet I know that the name can be local the the one sheet I apply it to, or it can be a name that is global to all sheets. For instance I have sheet1, 2 and 3. If I name a cell on sheet1 with the name "SampleName" this name and the reference on sheet1 can be used on the other 2 sheets. I know there is a way where I can apply the same name "SampleName" on each sheet, where it refers only to the cell on the individual sheet. I can not remember how the assignment of a name and the scope of the name (global to all sheets or to one individual sheet) works. Help and Knowledge base don't lead me anywhere.

Anyone remember?

Answer:Excel named ranges, scope of definition

From excel help:

3-D references If you want to analyze data in the same cell or range of cells on multiple worksheets within the workbook, use a 3-D reference. A 3-D reference includes the cell or range reference, preceded by a range of worksheet names. Excel uses any worksheets stored between the starting and ending names of the reference. For example, =SUM(Sheet2:Sheet13!B5) adds all the values contained in cell B5 on all the worksheets between and including Sheet 2 and Sheet 13

A few hours ago, I was browsing the internet, when Firefox suddenly closed on me. Then a notification popped up with the little Windows Action flag saying that the Security Service was turned off, and immediately after that, my desktop went black, icons started disappearing, and a whole pile of "Delayed Write Failed" error messages popped up.

I immediately shut off the computer, booted in safe mode, and ran Malwarebytes, which picked up 5 infected files and trashed them. I restarted the computer and ran Avast's scanner to see if anything was still there, but within 5 minutes, the error messages were back again. I also realized that the virus was deleting and/or hiding my files (I hope it's the latter). I shut off the computer again, luckily before anything too important disappeared, and rebooted in safe mode. Ran Malwarebytes again and picked up two files, a Trojan file (FakeAlert), and an accompanying registry entry.

I was also going to try to set up Avast to run a boot scan, but it doesn't seem to want to work. The shields are all off in safe mode and it gives me an error message saying that the shields are unreachable every time I try to start them. The scanner still works though, for whatever reason. Even stranger, it ran just fine when I ran the computer in normal mode between the two safe mode boots. I don't know if this is just an effect of safe mode, or if the Trojan is doing something.

I've completed the preparation check... Read more

I am attempting to run a (legitimate) ADCH++ hub from my computer. I am trying to restrict access to few certain IP blocks. The problem that I encounter is that the auto-created firewall rules Windows creates are not able to be changed.

In Windows Firewall with Advanced Security, when I attempt to change the scope to allow only the IP blocks I want, Windows Firewall states,

"Error: The parameter is incorrect

Status: 'Defer to user' setting can only be used in a firewall rule where program path and TCP/UDP protocol are specified with no additional scopes."

This problem also happens when I attempt to allow only a certain TCP or UDP port. These rules are in place for TCP and UDP traffic, for only Private and Public Networks.

I naturally tried to create my own rules for those programs, replacing the auto-created ones, but Windows Firewall blocked traffic trying to get to my hub, even though the settings in the rules were the same.

Is there something I am missing? What would be a good alternative so that only those IP blocks can connect?

Answer:Firewall Rule: Unable to change scope for TCP and UDP rules

Perhaps Comodo Free Firewall shall be a good alternative to the Windows Firewall. Please try it out.

This one problem kept my win 7 PC from being able to be pinged and share files from incoming ubuntu PC on another LAN with a different subnet.

I have 2 lans, 2 routers, each using a different range of IP.
One is on 192.168.1.x
Other is on 192.168.200.x

I have a static route to direct packets from forward LAN to the other LAN. Only thing was Windows 7 kept blocking that route UNLESS the firewall for the private network was turned off. Even if you turn on sharing, etc... Windows 7 firewall only allows for the subnet LAN it exists on.

So you have to put in a rule and change the scope
The exception is to add your local lan ip range.
For me it scope exception is 192.168.200.0/24

screenshot and also shows the pings from ubuntu PC on different LAN works.

Click Action, new rule, then custom, keep clicking next till you get to scope. Under Local IP, enter your LAN as I did.
Apply it and it works.

Answer:Windows 7 firewall exception incoming scope rule for different subnet

That's good to know sdowney717, I wasn't sure if Windows could manage sharing between two different subnets but adding the subnet range to the firewall rules looks like it works pretty well for this.

You can also connect to both subnets with a single NIC by adding the secondary subnet to the advanced TCP/IP settings in IPv4 properties.

Hi guys
I already posted my question on Microsoft answers (http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/ie/forum/ie11-windows_7/choose-your-homepage-and-search-settings/2966bcb3-3ddb-4a26-8c51-07b5aa40e4ef), it was suggested there that I post it here as well:

http://www.sevenforums.com/browsers-mail/394764-anybody-else-get-notification-ie.html

Of course, this is disturbing for many of my users, and, what's worse, since we use dynamic local profiles in our company (i.e. the user profile is created from the DEFAULT profile on each and every login), this message shows up after each and every login
which normally happens once a day.

My colleagues (and my boss!) have asked me to get rid of this message.

Specifically, I'm talking about what's written in

Hi, I'm trying to figure out why Access doesn't think my variable is in the current scope. Take a look, and let me know if you have any suggestions. The variable that it says is out of the current scope is strSQLSELECT in the first nested If statement's conditional statement.
Code:

Private Sub cmdFilter_Click()

strSQLFROM = strSQLFROM & "tblProjects, "
End If
strSQLWHERE = strSQLWHERE & "([fkStatusID] = Me.cboStatus) AND "
End If

'the code goes on for a while, but this is where the error is occuring

So if someone entered an expiration date (if the expiration date combo box is not left blank), I want to check to see if the strSQLSELECT string contains the fkStatusID field yet, and if it doesn't, I want to add it. Hello computer saviors,

I need help. I have a Motion Computing LE1600 tablet PC running XP service pack 3. I was surfing the web and Avast said a threat was detected, and I thought it was stopped. Sadly, it wasn't and when I turned my computer back on the desktop was without a start bar or desktop icons. Through cont/alt/del I was able to access task manager, and run some things through there. I tried to run a system restor, but the only point I could access didn't change the situation. I restarted the computer in safe mode, and scanned with Malwarebytes, which found nothing, and Avast, which found 4 infected files. The flies are C:\Windows\Explorer.EXE (Threat Win32:Patched-UE [Tr]), c:\windows\system32\winlogon.exe (threat win32:winpatch), c:\windows\explorer.exe (threat win32:winpatch), c:\windows\system32\winlogon.exe (threat win32:winpatch) When I try to "move to chest" the error says the files are read only. Interestingly, when I went in the windows folder, there are 3 files explorer.exe, explorer(2).exe and explorer(3).exe I don't know why that is. I tried changing the file access to allow changes, but that didn't help.

I am currently running the system in safe mode, because I can see and use the desktop that way and I am logging this on another PC. I am attaching the dds logs, and I am waiting on gmer to stop scanning. I made the logs in safe mode. If I need to reboot and go ... Read more

I had Avast Internet Security for about 3 years. Recently, I had a computer problem and took my computer to Best Buy's Geek Squad. They installed Webroot, and uninstalled Avast. I am glad they did. Avast had automatically renewed my subscription last year and the year before, and altlhough I e-mailed them several times, I couldn't reach them to tell them that I did not want the installation. I don't want Avast anymore, but am afraid that, in the fall of this year when my present subscription expires (although the program is no longer on my computer), they will reinstall avast and automatically charge my credit card again. I need to be able to talk to someone who will assure me that this will not happen. Does anyone know how I can accomplish this and be done with Avast?

Many, many thanks for your help!

Answer:Solved: Must contact Avast antivirus people, make sure they don't reinstall Avast.

I got a pop up that said my virus protection found a bad toolbar and wanted to remove it.  After that my computer kept rebooting.  Finally I was able to debug the boot up and was able to finally use my computer.  My firefox was disabled, so was Maleware Bytes, Avast, and other programs.  I was able to reinstall Maleware Bytes which found one virus (pup.optional.sweetIM.a).  I wasn't able to reinstall Avast! so I installed AVG which didn't find any viruses.  My kids have been using my computer lately and I've had to remove other viruses they accidentally installed.  At this point, I'm pretty sure I still have a problem.

Yesterday I used the Avast uninstaller - avastclear or such name -  to uninstall Avast trial software.  I then installed BitDefender Total Security trial yesterday.

This morning in my BitDefender Event Log, I see this entry:

The application C:\program files\common files\av\avast! antivirus\backup.exe attempted to connect to the Internet using TCP protocol on port 49etc.  Bitdefender Firewall has granted access for this application.

The next entry, about 24 minutes later was:

Firewall module status changed
Firewall has been enabled

I did nothing to disable the Firewall and have a question for BitDefender, but I am miffed that Avast is still slinking around on my computer after I uninstalled it.

Is that legal for them to do that?  How can I get ALL Avast off my computer?

Thanks for help in understanding this.

Answer:Uninstalled Avast but "avast! antivirus\backup.exe" accessed network

Backup.exe is distributed by emergency update to all avast versions...read the explanation by petr_matrix, Avast team in this avast topic. Did you use Windows Explorer to physically search for and confirm that backup.exe is still in that location?Yesterday I used the Avast uninstaller - avastclear or such name - to uninstall Avast trial software.Did you run avastclear in safe mode...per these instructions? If not, that may explain why it was not removed.BitDefender Total Security includes a Firewall. Anti-virus vendors which offer suites with a Firewall allow their programs to manage Windows Security Center & Firewall by default so it has complete control in order to prevent conflicts and duplicate warnings. This management action is normally taken during installation and many users are unaware of this fact. Windows 8/10 Defender and Microsoft Security Essentials are also typically disabled when installing third-party anti-virus software.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Hello,
I am having a few problems with my system (currently using Windows 7 Home Premium). Here followes a not-so short description of my problem:
A few days ago, I encountered a somewhat strange problem. While browsing (using Firefox), the computer suddenly froze. I assumed it was caused by an unresponsive script in Firefox , which happen all the time owing to the large number of tabs I run simultaneously, which usually stop in a matter of seconds (sometimes minutes). I did, however, get impatient, and shut down the computer by pressing the on/off button. When I restarted, it updated the registry (nothing strange there, I presume it was the Windows updates that it was installing). However, when I logged on, the Avast! antivirus software I was using was disabled (which caused me to shut down the internet connection immediately so that further (possible) infection could be avoided), and when I tried to restart the Avast! service, it gave me the following message: "Unable to start the File System Shield! Shield unreachable." I tried scanning as well, which resulted in this message: "File System Shield provider not found." Messing around with avast! did, however, slow down the computer tremendously, and the CPU usage was subsequently stuck at a 100%, and I was hardly able to use the computer. Therefore, I shut it off again. When I started it this time, I could not log on: logging on simply resulted in a black screen. I found this highly distur... Read more

Hi

A friend gives me an Avast Premium license for 8 months. I am using a free combo with Comodo Firewall (Cruelsister settings) and Avast (Jack settings) and I have doubts about which option protects me better.

I dont know the quality of the Avast firewall, I also dont know the level of its sandbox and on the other hand, Comodo Firewall is not comfortable to maintain, since it blocks legitimate programs, browser extensions, and even Windows updates.

I know I can have Sandboxie installed on my computer to act on demand, but what I'm most interested in knowing is what configuration do you advise me regarding protection.

Thank you in advance

Answer:Avast Premier vs Comodo Firewall + Avast free

Avast is sux better totaly change it to other software... go use fully Comodo and instal free zemana and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for o/d scan. if you dont like comodo sandbox you can use free version of sandboxie at last.

AIS has SecureDNS.

A user in Avast forum mentioned "It is programmed so that it is used, and not your isp or other dns services".

I think during install this should be mentioned that SecureDNS enabled will use Avast DNS instead of ISP DNS or system DNS.

SecureDNS enabled gives randomly "check if the site name entered is correct".

SecureDNS disabled gives no probs.

And this is confirmed. I am checking for past few days.

Anyone with the prob?
And does SecureDNS has malware/phishing protection?

Answer:Avast SecureDNS in avast Internet Security?

SecureDNS is design to provide protection against hijacking webpage which translates the web address to IP to determine if its in blacklist + in my view the malware/phishing protection may already incorporate in Web shield so there's no problem if both turn on.

I haven't used avast for a while so I thought of downloading it and trying.

The other day I was looking to avast 6 features and I came across this feature called as "SafeZone". I clicked it and it switched me to an avast OS. They only include a browser, no my computer or documents. I thought it will be nice to test malware links in it.

Is avast SafeZone good or should I continue with my VMware Win-7 OS to test malwares. I felt no slow down while using SafeZone.

Thanks.

Answer:avast! Internet Security 6 - avast! SafeZone

SafeZone isn't meant for testing malware links, nor is it an OS.

The avast! SafeZone is special web browser in avast! Pro Antivirus 6.x and avast! Internet Security 6.x, which allows you to browse the web in a private, secure environment, invisible to the rest of your system.Click to expand...

Question... does anybody have any examples of "contracts" or "scope of work" documents they have clients sign when they do a new networking job? Just curious to see some examples... might be looking to get these implimented into our jobs so that if a customer says "hey we were promised xyz" i can turn back to the document and go "no sir you were not, this is what you and your sales person agreed upon"

we run into it a lot where i go on site and a customer has one idea in mind when i was sent there under a completely different intention...

we do CCTV/networking things (structured cabling basically, mostly commercial sometimes residential).

just looking for examples of contracts/scope of work documents i can use to create our own

Answer:Business Question: Scope of Work/Contract Question

In my experience there really isn't a template for a scope of work (I'm usually the one paying vendors & consultants), basically what it boils down to is a line item list of what it is you're going to do with some detail about each part. So perhaps in your example it would read:

Install 1 SuperAwesome-o CCT camera on NW exterior of building, setup scan to cover 100 deg of coverage on parking lot, cable to back-end monitoring system, verify functionality
Install 1 SemiAwesome-o interior CCTV camera above recoptionist desk to cover front entrance. No scan, cable to back-end system and verify

etc, etc, etc...

I have a file, "07-Vendesi saggezza.mp3" which can be found in quite a few directories across the drives on my system.
If I restrict the search to E: then I get a list of occurrences found on drive E: (Search_E.jpg)
If I search "Computer", then the search finds matches, but after finding one match on E: it seems to hang, and eventually displays an incomplete list (Search_Computer.jpg)

Is there something I can do to find all of the occurrences across my system?

Answer:Windows search inconsistent, dependant on scope of search

I would try Everything search. Much faster and more relevant than Windows search.

Everything Search Engine

Hi,
I like to be able to search for a file quickly and efficiently, preferrably without involving third-party apps.

So when I press the Win key, I like that I can type into the search box directly, but it's annoying that the search scope is pre-set to "everywhere", as for some reason that's beyond me, I get file search results only on the first 2 lines. To get a longer file list, I have to manually change the scope to "files".

Is there a way to set the search scope by default to "files"?

Thanks
Steve
