Drive Sizing Specs for Upgrading Optical Drive in an Alienware Aurora R6

Question: Drive Sizing Specs for Upgrading Optical Drive in an Alienware Aurora R6

I have an Alienware Aurora R6 and am frustratingly trying to upgrade the optical drive to one that can read Blu-rays. Does anyone know what drive size specs I should be looking for? It's a low profile drive that is even smaller than a standard laptop optical drive. I tried posting this to an existing Aurora R6 article (, but my reputation here isn't high enough to post to older articles. Thanks any help.
Background in case anyone's interested: When purchasing this computer the only spec*they showed was that it was a 5.25" drive. Assuming it would be a full sized 5.25", I ordered the system with the least expensive DVD option, meaning to switch it out with the Blu-ray drive in my old system. This, of course, didn't work, so eventually I ordered a low profile Blu-ray drive meant for laptops. The slot in the case is too small even for this drive. What grinds my gears about this is that it's obvious that the internal bay (silver*metal part) is big enough for the laptop drive. It's the outer case (black metal part) and front bezel that are the obstructions.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I just purchased an Alienware Aurora R5, and I am new to computers. I realized that there is an Idle fan on the right panel of the Aurora, is that supposed to be working? Also if someone could tell me what my thermals should look like too, that'd be awesome. I noticed my ambient sensors get up to 65 C when i'm gaming on a not so stressful game, and the fans will speed up, then slow down somewhat constantly (during my gaming experience).

Also My Alienware Aurora did not come with a Cd drive, although every single picture indicated one on, and I couldn't see an option as to where to add on in a customization.

Hi guys,
This may be a noob question (because I am one lol) but ive got an old model alienware Aurora shipping date was 23/03/2010. Service tag: BKPJP4J.
I upgraded my rig to a GTX970 and 16GB of ram. Now I want to install an SSD. Now for the noob part, when I opened up my Aurora I saw ive got 3 slots left for SSD/HDD but on all 3 remaining cables it says "HDDSATA2, up until 4.
Does this mean I have to get a new SATA cable for the SSD? Also, do you guys think this is a nice SSD or do you have other suggestions?: Samsung SSD 850 EVO 2.5 SATA III
Last thing, I never opted for a wifi adapter or internal card. Do you guys have any suggestions? It should be fast because of multiplayer gaming.
Help is really appriciated. Thank you and cheers.

I've recently been given a fresh in-box geforce gtx 650 ti boost graphics card.
I've already attempted to upgrade my card before and it didn't work, the computer refused to run with it no matter what I tried, so I'd just like to ask if anyone knows if it will work to put this card into my system?
and if not, why? and what can I try?

Hi, I wanted to upgrade the optical drive in my HP S5545UK to a BluRay writable one. Having read various reviews and checked the 'Replacing a CD or DVD Drive' article at: ...I decided on the LG BH10LS38 and ordered it from Amazon. Following the instructions in the link above, the part about connecting the new drive states that there may be three cables required - one of which is the "Eject or control cable (not needed for some drives)". As this drive just has the power and SATA connection - I presumed this was one of the "some drives" that do not need the eject/control cable. However, it seems that it's not about whether the *drive* needs this cable - it's about the design of the Pavilion case! It's designed so the optical drive sits vertically. Fine, no problem - this drive is designed for that (has extra support in the tray). BUT, the drive's eject button is not only hidden by the front bezel, but also by the front facia of the PC (so even removing the bezel doesn't allow access to the eject button). HP have put their own 'eject' button just below the drive on the front panel, but this is what the third cable is. It connects this switch directly to the original optical drive. Without this connection, there is no way of hardware-ejecting the replacement drive. Sure, I know it can be software-ejected, but that's quite annoying - and there's always those times when you remember just aft... Answer:Upgrading optical drive in Pavilion Slimline S5545UK

I know this has been a while, 4+ years old, but most drives have a pin hole to hardware eject after shutdown. Additionally, the control cable only makes connection to the external case eject/close button. There is still a hardware button on the drive. All you must do is open the cover flap (or remove it) to access it. I have replaced stock DVD drive with a BD drive that does not have the control cable port and operate it just fine with the cover removed. The front of the case doesn't look as nice, but it?s still more than functional.-Kurt

I have an Edge 14. Intel i3 M370 model.  I ordered a OBHC and installed a 160 Gb SATA drive, loaded with WIN 7.  In the main drive bay I have an Ubuntu OS setup.Trying to set up a dual boot configuration.  But, when I boot the drive and enter the BIOS set up, the drive in the caddy doesn't show.  If I let it boot from the main drive, Ubuntu starts up. If I put the Ubuntu drive in the caddy and nothing in the main bay, "NO OPERATING SYSTEM." When I look at the computer in Ubuntu, the OS7 drive is there.  All three partitions (Lenovo, OS and startup).  I can mount them, etc.  When I use Disk Utility in Ubuntu, the drive shows up listed under the SATA controller and is located at position 2 of the SATA bus.   I updated the BIOS and it is now 1.26. Still no sign of the HDD in the caddy.  Very odd.  When I power up the computer, the LED in the caddy does light up. When I run sudo update-grub in Ubuntu, the WIN 7 loader shows up in the list.  So a bootable OS is seen.  But if I select WIN 7 loader in the GRUB list at boot, I get a "no such drive" message, and am lead back the the GRUB list. In the BIOS, the config menu, the startup list only includes HDD0.   Is there some secret BIOS trick I need to play?  Correct me if I'm wrong, but there aren't any jumper settings, etc. on a SATA drive, right?  Nothing there to change. Any suggestions would be very much appreci... Hi guys, i wonder if you can offer any ideas here. I have a brand new T420s which came with an optical slot place holder piece of plastic. I removed this and popped in a 'Lenovo DVD Multi IV DVD Multi Recorder CD-RW' P/N 45N7453. It clicked into place fine, but the power light on it does not come on and the eject button does not work. This same drive works fine in 2 other T420s laptops my colleagues have, so the drive is ok. I tried disabling the optical drive in the bios, rebooting, re-enabling, rebooting but nothing. Is there anything else i can try or would you say its a board issue and i'm stuck with it ?

I have a ThinkPad R51 which I love. I run Linux Mint Maya edition. It has been a faithful laptop for me for several years. My Harddrive apparently is failing - as it makes loud squeels when I try to run the system. I have not been successful in getting my data off the drive - since I can barely load the OS right now. (Right now I can't load it at all) My old HD is a 30GB Toshiba MK3021GAS. What is the DRIVE HEIGHT that I need to search for in getting a new HD? I could live with even a 10 GB drive to get going again - can anyone point me to anything REALLY inexpensive? (I have only $10 today - and maybe $20 on Friday.) I have a CD of Linux WattOS R6, which I could boot from. However, it doesn't show me the HD when I boot from the CD. Is there any way I can save my data from my HD? I could surive with extracting just a few hundred MB of files. It failed when I was tryihng to copy to a USB Stick this morning. Thank you in advance.(I'm writing from my antique iBook G4, which is limping along on a failing HD itself.)

I am confused about the customization page of W510. Optical device: Multi Recorder Optical Drive. Can it write/record blu-ray disc? There is no explanation or no other device to select. If it can write/record blu-ray disc then it is ok. If not then how can I add a blu-ray recorder/writer in my customization? There is no option to select such device there.

I have a sony vaio VGN-NR330E that I have just bought a new hard drive for (doing a fresh install of vista) and the internal optical drive spins up but won't boot off the cd, and after a blinking cursor says O/S not found, so i tried it on an external usb drive, and it didnt boot, same black screen followed by O/S not found. I tried booting from a knoppix live cd that worked on another computer and it wouldnt boot either. I have no idea of any what to do, since it wont boot off of an external HDD internal optical drive, external optical drive, and any help is greatly appreciated.

What are the current boot set in your BIOS?

If not listed as the first boot's unlikely that the system would boot from either drive.

Hello, I'm going to be replacing my primary HDD (1tb) with a SSD and will place the HDD in a drive caddy, replacing the existing DVD drive. 3rd party vendors list both 12mm and 9.5mm drive caddys for this - I imagine a newer laptop would have the smaller form factor, unfortunately this spec info is not available from the manual or Lenovo tech support - does anyone happen to know? Might be best if I yank the drive and measure it or take it with me to buy a caddy in person, rather than order online. Thanks for reading,Paul

I installed a second hard drive in place of the DVD drive and now when my computer is plugged in it won't charge (it says plugged in, not charging).  I can't imagine that the power adapter isn't able to handle a second hard drive because I've seen plenty of people that said they put two hard drives in their w530.  Is there some kind of driver or setting that I need to reset to make this work again?  I'm on windows 8.1 by the way so a lot of the solutions I've found by googling do not apply to my system.

H Guys,Need help with this one. Got three Dell Latitude C810 Laptops and all three are coming up with the same message. Primary Hard Drive: NoneFixed Optical Drive: Not installed.I am very comfortable around computers / laptops  and thought I knew my way around them until now.The hard drives are all brand new 40GB IDE hard drives that work fine on other laptops (tested them). The laptops have the HD adapters fitted before I installed them in the laptops. Even bought three replacement adapters - just in case. Did not make any difference. When the units power up, they go through POST, spend ages on the splash screen and the error messages come up.The HD and Optical Drive is not registering in BIOS.I read somewhere to take out the battery, unplug laptop from mains and hold power botton for 30 seconds or so. Tried that no luck. Also read somewhere to have the Caps, Num and Scroll keys all on in or before going into BIOS and do the Alt+E, Alt+F and Alt+B. The Alt+B combination was supposed to be held until the laptop reboots itself. Held them down for almost a minute and nothing happened. Laptop did not reboot. The Alt+F did reset the Laptops Bios to default setting and dates, and nothing more. They still did not register the HD or Optical Drive.I have swapped out HDs, DVD ROMs, with or without battery, Swapped out RAMs - ram memtest on another laptop. They all came back okay. This is really thrown me and I'd realy appreciate some assitance.Cheers guys.KS

I am trying to replace my optical drive with a HDD Caddy with a Seagate 2TB HDD. When I start my laptop with the drive installed both my bios and os don't recognized it. If I start my laptop and then slide the caddy into the optical bay my os picks it up immediately. If I restart the computer the drive is gone. I have discussed with the caddy manufacturer and they aren't sure what the issue is. I have updated all my drivers and my bios via Dell's website.
Can anyone provide some insight?

I have an Dell Inspiron 15-5558 and am wanting to swap the optical DVD drive for a Sandisk Ultra II 240GB ssd for the operating system.
I'm quite newbie with modding hardware so just wondering what I would need apart from the hard drive itself.
I know I'll need some sort of bay to hold it in but does anyone know where I would source one to the same specs as the drive so the case is all flush

I disabled the optical drive from Windows System folder because it was faulty and slowing down my computer.

However, now, a virus has stopped from starting Windows.

Since this configuration of Windows on the Hard Drive, can I replace the Hard Drive with a new one so it can:

A. Reset my configuration to allow a Windows Installation disk to boot up from the "newly installed" optical drive,

B. Erase any prior infected files I may have had on the previous Hard Drive.

Thank you,

The computer is a Dell Inspirion 2200 Notebook.

I was given a pc (asus K8N-E) the problem is that although it powers up, mobo light works cpu fan spins and system fan spins front panel lights work, the hard drive and optical drive wont power up unless i disconnect the IDE cables, when disconnected the hard drive spins and the light on and drawer on the optical drive work. its as if the IDE is somehow disabled, i have tried different cables but to no avail any help appreciated.

Answer:Hard drive and optical drive only work when IDE cables are disconnected

check that the cables are plugged in the right way round, the red stripe on the cable goes next to the power socket on the device and the board is usually marked pin 1 or has a dot on it.

does it happen when you plug in a single device or only when you plug in both.

are you using seperate cables or are you putting both devices on the same cable.

Answer:Help, cannot see my D drive after re-sizing

You have most likely set the partition sizes incorrectly; a 30GB partition should have an input something like 32000000MB. These figures aren't exact so you will have experiment with the numbers, I've got four partitions on my second Hard Drive and it took a few attempts to get them right.

Question: Alienware Aurora

Hello and good Evening!
I do have sadly a Problem with my Alienware-Computer, which really makes me sad.
When I press the Power-Button from my Computer, my Vans goes up to 100%. When the Start-Screen from Windows comes up and I lock into my System and the Alienware Command-Center loads, than I have the Control to bring my Vans back to 5%. The good think is, when I have to reboot my System, the Settings from 5 % are still running and I dont have to to it every Day.
This Problem starts when I did updated my System to Windows 10. After I had many System-Crashes ( Blue-Screens ) I luckly could go back with my USB-Drive to my Factory-Image, with my OS Windows 7

DId some of you Guys have an Idea how to fix this?

Answer:Alienware Aurora

You'll probably get a better response if you re-post this in the Alienware Club forum. Be sure to mention which version of Win 10 you're running, Home or Pro and which update: Anniversary, Creators Update or the new Fall Creators Update.

ODD, 12.7MM Rambo, TSST SN-208ABI'm not interested in Blu-ray combo replacement so I haven't listed those. My question is, do I have to get one of the drives listed above or can I get another brand as brand new is cheaper (see below)? I understand I would need to swap the bezel around :-) Thanks

Thanks for any help in advance, Pete

Answer:Z580 Optical drive (DVD drive) replacement advice?

Hi pete_agreatguy  ,
As Optical Drives are mostly universal , your choice most likely would work as SATA interface. 12.7mm height .
Challenges would only be the fitting with the mounts so do check for return option just in case.
For other resellers, it would be better if there a mention of workable model for match for chassis fittings  .
12.8 cm x 12.6 cm x 1.27 cm (LiteOn 8x Internal Slim) 128 mm x 12.7 mm x 126.1 mm (Sony)BD-5750H as one from the manual .
Hope this helps.

Hi all

I have installed an optical drive in my computer today and my drive letters were changed. I have changed them back to what they were and after restarting my computer I was unable to log to Windows 8.1 due to the OS being unable to find user profile (my user profile is moved outside of the system drive).

I restored my system to the point from before the new drive installation, but I still would like to change the drive letters around, as some of my software relies on specific directory paths with drive letters.

1. The state from before the installation of the new optical drive.

System (C:)
Virtual Box (D:)
Program Files (E:)
Passport (F:)
Storage (G:)
Program Files 2 (I:)
2. The state after installation of the new optical drive:

System (C:)
Virtual Box (D:)
Program Files (E:)
Optical Drive (F:)
Passport (G:)
Storage (H:)
Program Files 2 (I:)
3. What I'd like to have:

System (C:)
Virtual Box (D:)
Program Files (E:)
Passport (F:)
Storage (G:)
Program Files 2 (I:)
Optical Drive (any letter, preferably X:)

My user profile WAS located in G:\Users

It is now located in H:\Users and I can log in to Windows. After changing the drive letters around to 3. above I can no longer log in, as Windows is unable to find the user profile on H:\Users anymore.

I use EaseUS Partition Master 10.0 to change the drive letters.

Is there any way I can change the drive letters and make Windows aware of user profile path change?

I recently replaced my hard drive with a SSD and put a fresh install of Windows 7 Home Premium edition on my laptop. I've had a lot of trouble getting all the drivers to work but fixing the optical drive seems to be giving me the most trouble. I've looked around on this website and on several forums. I've gone into the device manager where the DVD/CD-ROM DRIVE entry only appears when I select to see hidden devices, and even then it is not the optical drive that is installed but something to do with my android phone so scanning for hardware changes makes no difference. I have seen tips on going into the registry to delete two files named upperfilters and lowerfilters, neither of which exist in my registry.  The drive can be seen from my BIOS but appears nowhere else. When I insert a disc I can hear and feel it moving so the hardware is still functioning.  When I installed the new hard drive, I did not unplug anything else so I am certain that the drive is just as connected as it was before when it was working properly. Any other suggestions?

Fresh install of Windows 10 on Dell Inspiron M5030 from my KLite USB drive where I have only added the correct, workable AMD-4200 video driver to the normal Windows 10 ISO. Windows 10 is functioning properly EXCEPT my TSST DVD+/-RW TS-L633C shows in Device Manager as DISK DRIVE 01 (which of course is not initialized) instead of showing as TS-L633C in DVD/CD-ROM drives.

I have tried the following:

1: Online updating drivers.

2: Hardware and devices troubleshooter. My problem is not recognized.

3: Uninstall CD/DVD drive driver. Restarted the computer, checked the functionality and the same problem exists.

Per device Manager, I have the standard SATA ACHI controller installed but no ATA channels 1, 2, 3, or 4 and no Standard ACHI 1.0 Serial ATA driver. Since Dell has not "approved" the M5030 for Windows 10, there are no drivers on the Dell M5030 Support website for Windows 10.

Can someone please give me some help please so that I can solve my problem?

Thank you very much.

I have two identical hard drives connected as master and slave on primary ide channel, and two optical drives on secondary ide. The problem is that the slave hard drive will only run in pio mode, and not udma mode 5 (as the primary does). The upshot of this is that any file transfer to or from my slave drive results in 100% cpu usage, and it's very annoying. Hello gurus, I replaced the HD with Samsung 500GB SSD, and have been loving it.  However, ever since I did that, I do not see the 2nd pre-installed 15GB SANDISK SSD Drive anymore in the explorer.    Anyone know what I can do to make the second drive be recognizable by the computer?   This is potentially a related problem but I also have trouble installing Windows 10, because it says it can't find a partition.  Can I use the second SSD drive as the partition for the install?

Answer:T450S: After upgrading main drive to SSD drive, do not see the second pre-installed SSD drive

This smaller SSD is designed to use software and be a cache drive. It wouldn't show in File Explorer. You can check Device Manager.

My boot hard drive (winXP) is currently 8gb. I'm running out of space and need to make it bigger - like 9gb. I have partition magic to help me do these partition tasks. I'm going to re-distribute free space or take some from another partition.

when I attempt to drag the slider on the C: drive to make it bigger it says "this partition may not be bootable because it crosses the 1024 cylinder boundary". Then what do I do? How do I enlarge my c: drive?

Can you damage your system, especially the motherboard and electric capacitors if you leave this computer on for too long ? Dell told me so, but I have much doubts? Supposedly, I damaged my motherboard doing so.
Thank you very much for your input. So basically what Dell told me (I supposedly damaged my motherboard and some capacitors by leaving it on for too long for my specific hardware) is just wrong ?

Hello.  I have 4 x 2 gig of ram but one of them is not working.  Win 7 shows 8 gig installed but only 4 available.
How do I figure out which ones are good, and make sure its not the MB?
I would like to upgrade to 16gig but not sure which to get.
I'm guessing this should work.  Any thoughts?

Answer:Alienware Aurora Midi

You'll need an external USB drive (and since Windows 10 doesn't have a native DVD Blue Ray decoder, be sure whatever you buy comes with the software you'll need if you plan to play Blue Ray discs on the system).

Hey guys, I've been having some trouble for a while now with my desktop first of whenever i turned the computer on it would load up untilthe windows logo then just go blank after that.I tried safe mode and it wouldn't work either, then i was stupid enough to play around in the bios and all i got was blue screen, after that ihanded it in to get looked at and he fixed it but only for a little bit until it did the same thing again, i bought a new hdd with a new copy of windows 7 and i could log in finally. But now whenever i play any game for more then a few minutes the computer just turns off and i have to unplug it from the power point and wait a whileotherwise it just starts beeping at me. I don't really have enough money to get it looked at again, any suggestions would be appreciated thanks.

Answer:Problems with Alienware Aurora r3

Could be thermal events, power supply or game related problem. Do you see the problem by any programs other than games running? Did you try removing the side casing and also checking if the processor's thermal paste is intact or atleast replacing it? Just make sure the heatsink and fan are well in placed.

Looking around the Alienware website I found this very strange:

The Area 51 base model starts at 800Euros more than the Aurora but seems to have a far poorer selection of processors, all i7, but no 2600. Of course you can get the 980 or 990x but that is an additional 800E! Otherwise the 960 (3.4 Ghz turbo) is the best option.
Whereas the Aurora desktop has the option of 2600 overclocked to 3.9 Ghz which is FAR cheaper than the above processors in the Area 51.

Of course the Area 51 has the infinitely better Core 2 Quads vs the Aurora Phenoms.
So which is ultimately better for gaming performance?? And why don't they have 2600 in the Area 51???

Hi there. I'm here on behalf of one of my good friends who purchased an Alienware desktop from Dell. He's owned it for almost four months now and he's been having trouble with it for the last month or so. I can't determine what's causing it myself and I don't want to take any drastic measures (like reformatting). Because of this, I don't really know where I should make this post, so sorry if it's in the wrong section.Basically, when he plays games like World of Warcraft, the visuals are rendered all messed up. Flickering, stretched, or missing geometry; the whole nine yards. Alt-tabbing also tends to make the game crash (and worse, which I'll explain below). Basically, the game performs perfectly, but it's all messed up looking and alt-tabbing is unstable.I've tried uninstalling the display drivers that came with the computer and installing the latest version (and yes I made sure I chose the correct model on Nvidia's website). I also made sure his operating system was up to date. None of that fixed it, and according to him it got somewhat worse after I updated his display drivers. But anyway, the worst part of all of this is that he's been forced to do a system restore twice within a couple of days. According to him, on both occasions, he alt-tabbed out of World of Warcraft and when he tried to alt-tab back in, the screen would go black and his monitor would say "Entering Power Save Mode" and basically it doesn'... I recently downloaded a game from steam (Fallen Earth) on my aurora r1 and I was able to play for about 6-12 hours with no issue then for no reason my computer froze keyboard and mouse was unresponsive, the sound looped, the game was froze on the monitor and i was unable to soft boot, i had to hold the power button down to shut it down.
I turned it back on after a bit, thinking it over heated i turned down the graphics on the game, and same freeze with 30 min to and hour of play time. shut it down again and started it back up this time it didnt pass its POST (power on self test) causing it to beep 4 times for the possible problem of a Ram read/write failure. after about 5 minutes it started like normal. yet it froze again.
Now its starting to freeze at the desktop level, and i dont know what to do. (I haven't changed a single thing with this computer and i treat it like my baby regular virus scans every other week and disk cleans)

right now im running it through a pre-boot system assessment. Ill post back with that info once its complete.

Hi there,

I have recently bought a new PC and it has recently started to encounter a BSOD on almost a daily basis.

I have Windows 8, 64 bit.

I have attached a copy of the dump files that are produced. They seem to indicate a problem with storport.sys, hal.dll and ntoskrnl.exe.

I have tried to find solutions for this myself online but haven't succeeded.

If I you need any further information please let me know.

Thanks in advance

I don't know about you guys, but I build computers pretty frequently, and it really irritates me that consumers do not get what they pay for with regards to HDDs and their capacity.
I remember working for years to build my first PC - and the HDD was 320gb, and I was super excited. Although, on completing construction of this monster of the day, I realised the capacity of my HDD was in fact closer to 299gb, and I wondered... Why?
I made some calls and did some reading and I did not like what I found.
We all know (or should know) that computers are built on binary data (1s and 0s) that are organised into bits (single data) and bytes (8 data), and that octal's equivalent grouping of the decimal 1000 is 1024. Thats why a kilobyte is 1024 bytes, a megabyte is 1024 kilobytes etc.
So a 2TB HDD, in theory, should be 2048GB, right? Well... no.
Manufacturers produce HDDs on a decimal scale. KB, MB, GB and TB are made and advertised, by manufacturers, as units of 1000.
Computers continue to (And will always) group bytes in units of 1024, which means the end consumer pays for what they're not getting.
As HDDs get bigger, the difference becomes more noticable.
My 2TB HDD is, in fact, showing up in windows as 1.81TB.

So my question is, why do manufacturers get to advertise for what they're not giving you? Why is a 1.81TB HDD not advertised as such, and why is nobody doing anything about it?

Aurora R3 is running WIndows 7.x
What MS OS can the Aurora R1 support (2560x1440 display, updated GPU)
What MS OS can the Aurora R3 support (2560x1440 display)
Can either move to Windows 8.1.x? Or both?
Can either or both move to Windows 10.x?

Answer:DELL ALIENWARE AURORA R1, R3, X51, and XPS 8700

First there is a free upgrade from Windows 7 OEM to Windows 10 Retail so there is absolutely zero point in purchasing a Windows 8.1 Retail license...
Windows 10 TH2 is essentially a fixed version of Windows 8.1 where Metro Apps work correctly as "Windows".
Almost any system shipped with Windows 7 can run Windows 10. As they are 2009 and 2011 models respectively Dell did not provide updated drivers for Windows 8.x or Windows 10 because they are all out of warranty. All the drivers should be inbuilt into Windows 10 TH2 or automatically obtained via Windows Update. Its advised to update your BIOS to the latest revision before proceeding.
A Clean Installation also in general performs better. See here for details:
Both systems likely have a legacy (non-UEFI) BIOS so take that into account when making the Bootable USB. Although you may want to look at the BIOS settings for the 2011 model to see if there is UEFI support.

Last night when it was working it said Alienware needed to do a bios update. I just shut off my monitor and let it do its thing over night. This morning I went to turn it on and I got the blinking lights.  For the price I paid for it I didn't expect problems to occur the day after I got it. I wonder if I should of just got a different computer in the first place.

Recently I purchased an Alienware Aurora and it has been making this annoying buzzing noise. It just buzzes when I'm doing anything from light surfing to gaming and I can't seem to pinpoint where it is coming from. Sometimes when I start up my PC I won't hear any buzzing, but other times it will buzz a lot with short intervals where it stops. I have a several year old Aurora R1.  I recently pulled it out of storage and am trying to get it back up and running.  When it was last shut down and stored it was working fine.  Now that it's out of storage and running again I can't get the OS to boot.  I got it booted once, and logged into windows fine.  Tried doing some Windows Updates but they failed as well.  Went to reboot and now all I get is a black screen after the Alienware splash and post beep.  I have never run the machine on OC, have upgraded the Ram, HDD, and graphics card.  Ram was upgraded to 24GB Corsair Dominator, HDD is a Sandisk Extreme 240gb, and Graphics is a GTX 770 classified.  The other odd thing I noticed is that the RAM as it displays in the bios somehow lost 8gb.  I swapped the sticks around and now it is seeing all 24 again.  I'm trying to decide if it's the RAM or the MB at this point.  I've tried dropping the ram down to a single stick on bank 1 (4gb), with different sticks to ensure I'm not using a bad stick, but still no luck.  Running Bios version A11.
Also, i've tried swapping the HDD around on different channels and changing the boot sequence to match.  It won't even boot from a thumb drive that is visible in the boot options list.  I must admit that my trouble shooting skills on hardware have gone downhill lately, so i'm turning to you guys for any thoughts.  Oh, the O... I think I have done everything that I can to solve the issue but still not working. Below is description of the problem and what I have done. Thanks in advance for your advise.
- I was using a Logitech webcam as microphone (USB plugged) and it works fine;
- I recently bough 2 new microphones (jack plugged), they are the same, the one my wife uses works fine, but mine has very low volume; we got exactly same PC, same drivers etc.
- the low volume thing is, when I run 'configure', and read the text as requested, the bar goes only a little more than the yellow zone;
- volume setting is 100%, no boost option (realtek options not loaded and I don't know why);
- I tested it on Team Speak (I will test on other communication software tonight);
- I tried re-install different drivers;
- I tried my wife's MIC on my PC;
- I will try my MIC on her PC tonight;
- I cannot find Realtek manager in Control panel;
- If I install Realtek latest driver, alienware audio is not working, and the volume is still very low;
- I will buy another USB microphone and it will be delivered early next month;

That is pretty much everything. Please let me know if you gents have any idea / suggestion. Having no clue of the problem is frustrating to me!

Answer:MIC very low volume (alienware aurora R5 win10 64)

Thank you for your message. Please try connecting the other mic on your system & check if that works, this way you can find out if this is an issue with the system or the mic.If the issue persists, open device manager – expand sound & video – right click on the audio driver & click on uninstall (do not check the box that says deleted driver) & restart the computer. This will refresh the driver.Try to record something with the default recording app & check if the issue persists. For my reference, please click on my Dell username & send a private message with the service tag, registered name & email address.

-64GB (4X16GB) DDR4 2133MHz SDRAM Memory
-1TB PCIe SSD (Boot) + 2TB 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s (Storage)
-Tray-Loading Dual Layer Blu-Ray Reader
-Dell Wireless 1820 Card (802.11AC Dual-Band Wi-Fi + Bluetooth 4.1)
-Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6700K Processor (4-Cores, 8MB Cache, Turbo Boost 2.0, Overclocked up to 4.2GHz on all four cores).
-Dell 24" S2417DG Gaming Monitor
-Acer 23" H236HL LCD Monitor
-1 USB port hub
I was thinking in getting CP1500PFCLCD 1500VA/900W but Im not really sure if this is good enough for my gaming rig?
Your help and advice regarding which UPS do I need will be highly appreciated.

Running into an issue upgrading my system from 4x2Gb uDIMMS (2GB 1Rx8 PC2-12800U) that came with my system to a 4x8Gb kit. I purchased the Patriot Viper kit off of Amazon, and installed it today. The system will not boot when only the Patriot memory is installed (no beeps, just turns on with a blank screen), but it will boot with an old dimm installed in slot 1, and slots 2-4 populated with the patriot dimms.
Here's the info on the DIMMs that I purchased:
Patriot Viper III Extreme Performance 32 GB 1600MHz (PC3 12800) DDR3 Memory Kit PV332G160C9QKBL

PC3-12800 (1600MHz)
Intel 6, 7 and 8 series
XMP 1.3 Certified

I've done a few searches, but most people I've seen with issues were installing memory with a higher clockrate. The motherboard model is 07jnh0 rev a00, and BIOS version is A11. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Dear All - my desktop freezes quite frequently either at the time of system boot or after the system has successfully booted and I have logged into the system (nothing works and Ctrl+Alt+Delete does not do anything) . In both cases I then have to force reboot the system and end up losing my work - extremely annoying.
In some case the system restarts automatically while I am working.
I have run Dell diagnostic available on the support page and it does not throw any errors. I have also run the assessment from BIOS by pressing the F12 key while rebooting. Most of the time that diagnostic also does not throw any error. However on couple of occasions the screen also froze while running the tests.

The ones are chose are the CORSAIR Vengeance LPX 8GB (2 x 4GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 2133 (PC4 17000) Desktop Memory Model CMK8GX4M2A2133C13R.

DDR4 2133 (PC4 17000)
Timing 13-15-15-28
Cas Latency 13
Voltage 1.2V

My system specs  ( that I know)
Intel Core I7 6700k @4.00ghz
GeForce GTX 1070
Ram Sticks say 4GB 1Rx8 PC4-2133P-UA1-11  - Samsung Brand

As a secondary question. When I get my new RAM in. Inside my PC there are two slots that are white and two that are black. The two samsung sticks that came with it are in the white slots. Should the new two go in the black? Or does that matter?

If there's any other info I can try and get it. But I am not exactly the most computer saavy. Hence why I purchased an alienware instead of buying my own haha.

When you click on the Bios file to download, it is instantaneous.  I get the feeling this is a bad/empty file?
If not, then there is a problem with this Desktop.
Dell apps are installed to find and install the updates.  I even tried to manually install the Bios update.
Any help will be appreciated.  The reason I am trying to update the Bios is because I installed an NVMe  (512gb) drive and it does not show up under disk management, nor does it show up under diskpart (cmd).
Thanks in advance,

TLDR * Has my new PSU caused coil whine in my GPU?

My 8 month old computer developed a strange clicking noise coming from the PSU, dell insured me that my PSU was faulty and so they replaced it with a new one.
With the replacement PSU, the initial noise disappeared. However, I am now getting a loud high pitched screech when playing games, it sounds to me like "coil whine".
I have been trying to determine whether the coil whine is coming from the PSU or GPU, as they are positioned very close together. I never had this coil whine BEFORE my PSU was replaced. Only afterwards.
Could it be that the new PSU is effecting and potentially damaging my GPU with this coil whine, or is the new PSU the culprit.
I specifically experience this noise only when playing overwatch, i have tested with BF1 and it runs silently, which to me seems more graphically demanding. I have not tested with other games.
I will post my spec below for further clarification. Thanks for reading, any help or response is greatly appreciated.

Dell Dimension, win XP.
PC has original DVD drive, added DVD burner and added floppy.

Power at least is connected to DVD (light comes on). Burner and Floppy don't have lights. Compputer does not show the drives as available.

I was selling the PC, so I deleted some apps(MS Office, Photoshop), games, etc., then ran a HDD cleaner to wipe empty space.

Tried re-seating cables, looked at BIOS, but I really don't know what I'm looking for.

Hi Guys  So I decided to replace my internal Optical Drive with the orginal Hard Drive that came with the laptop, I used a caddy which I bought from eBay and all went well and works well. I have noticed one issue though, with the original Optical Drive there is a little screw which goes through the end of the optical drive and into the main section of the laptop under the keyboard (I hope people know what I mean). Anyway with the replacement caddy it does not have this hole for the screw so I am unable to secure the caddy in place.  What this all means is that I can literally pull the caddy out of laptop while using it as it's not secured, has anyone else performed this replacement and had this issue and know what can be done to secure it (other than blue tack or something). Thanks in advance

So I'm currently trying to install a game, for some reason at the exact same point every time i am getting an error that says: Cyclic Redundancy Check Error. Ive been all over the internet looking for solutions to this problem but none of them are working for my situation. Most people say it is either a problem with the disk or the hard drive itself, but i have gone back to the store where i bought the game and got a new disk so the disk cannot be the problem as it stops at the same place regardless. Also my hard drive cannot be the problem because i have tried installing it to both my computers hard-drive as well as an external drive which leaves me no option but to believe it is a problem with the optical drive. Since i have a laptop i cant dismantle anything to clean / make sure the drive is connected properly. I dont know if there is a solution to this problem short of having to send my computer to a proffessional / back to the manufacturer but if anything i have done is wrong then i would love a suggestion of what i could possibly do to fix this problem. I am also not against revisiting my hard drive being at issue if anyone still thinks it is the problem.

Please Assist,

Hey all! Just posting to see if anyone has experience with upgrading their Lenovo laptops/notebooks with 2nd hard drives through the use of hard drive caddys? I have been looking through this website which includes many 'how-to's and video guides on the process. There are also plenty on youtube. However I am reluctant to go out on a limb. They have entire production lines dedicated to certain brands of laptops and notebooks and this includes Lenovo. However, I couldn't find one for my specific model, G570, but I am able to find them for the G430/G530G560. Link: Are the dimensions of these laptops the same as the G570? Other Links I thought might fit the G570 if its possible

I just built a nice little powerhouse for my girlfriend. It's all up and running great, but I ran into a strange snag along the way.

First of all I'm using the new 915 Intel board (not sure the exact number ATM, but it is Intel brand) with a PCI Express, LGA775 chipset.

I currently have one 36.7 GB WD Raptor on a SATA connection. The only optical drive is a CD/DVD +/- RW combo on it's own (and only) IDE channel. I opened up the BIOS on first boot, and noticed that even though the correct model number showed up in the Drive Options, it was displayed as being a Floppy Drive!

Confused, I switched the jumper setting.... still no change. Switched to the last jumper setting.. tried removing the jumper completely, nope ! OK, so I decide I'll set the jumper back to the Master position and let Windows try to sort it out.

I install windows off my USB DVD-drive. Flawless install, but even in Windows it displays a Floppy Drive! There is no Floppy drive connected. I then proceed to close the case and barf all over the damn thing out of pure frustration. puke:

I'm freakin out here! I've built several computers and worked on countless others and have NEVER EVER seen anything like this. Granted, the RAID thing is new to me, and I'm guessing it probably has something to do with that.

Answer:Optical Drive being recognized as a Floppy Drive !

Welcome to Techspot !

I know you are experienced ,but sometimes the simple stuff.
Given the newness of this architecture I would lean towards the necessity of a bios file update.
Since the bios sees it as a floppy but has the correct Model and I take you loaded Windows from it, it obviously works.
Does your Bios settings allow you to manually chose the drive type and DMA etc.If yes
Disable all IDE channels not in use. and turn off 'auto configure '
Check the web site and tech support there could be a bug fix in the works.
Let us know how far you get.

P.S. Sorry missed you loaded from USB,However if the drive can read media etc. my point is the same.

Hello there,

First off thanks in advance for reading this! I would really appreciate some advice

I have a 17inch Macbook pro i7 laptop.

I was looking at the possibility of replacing the optical drive with a SSD drive (i never really use the optical drive anyways)

I found a place online where one can purchase the SSD drive and case so it fits into where the optical drive is also.

My question is has anybody else done this? and if so is it a good /bad idea?

And also once I replace the optical drive with SSD can I have it so my OS is working off of the new SSD drive and my original 5400rpm HDD will appear up as a separate drive for storage.
Im not sure if its relevant or not but here are the specs of my laptop

Mac osx 10.6.8
2.66 GHZ i7
8gb 1067 MHz DDR3

I'm on the verge of buying a T430, and I was wondering whether having an SSD as my primary hard drive (on which I would have the operating system only) and then using a 500GB hard drive in place of the optical drive. My reasoning is I want a fast boot time, and also the storage on the SSDs aren't that big, and I do need a lot of space. Are there any performance issues (eg slower) when using the added hard drive?  I was thinking of installing all my programs on there.  I read on a YouTube comment that having the second hard drive creates 'bottlenecking' and slows things down.

Go to Solution.

Answer:T430 and hard drive instead of optical drive

Be sure the SSD height profile is compatible with the 430. I believe they're using a thinner drive not the 9.5mm is standard. Verify before you order a drive if thats the system you're wanting.Momentus drives are 9.5mm from the data sheet of their website. As for slowing down I say not. You can put the swap file etc on the 2nd drive and that would reduce write access to the SSD for temp data. You will need the storage and or target for a backup image so IMO its a must.

My computer has 2 hard drives, a CD Writer & a DVD Rom. I have used the same cable to connect the 2 hard drives to the IDE port 0, one hard drive is set as master & other slave, I have done the same with the CD Writer & DVD Rom to IDE 1. Is this an ideal way to connect the devices.

I've got an Alienware Aurora R4 with Windows Home Premuim 64bit. A few days ago my computer started having BSOD issues, crashing and sometimes taking multiple tries to restart. I've not noticed anything consistant in what programmes were running when it happened. I tried a system restore to a few days before I noticed the issue, but it didn't have an effect. I could potentially go back further. Alienware Autopsy scans and self scans find nothing. The signature is always:

Problem Event Name: BlueScreen
OS Version: 6.1.7601.
Locale ID: 2057

I have attached a dmp. file

Attachment 325181

I am a fairly proficient, but not an expert by any means. If anyone has any advice or similar experiences I would greatly appreciate it. Let me know if I have to provide anything further too.

Many thanks for reading.

Hey everyone, I've got a 7-year old Alienware Aurora desktop that I would love to upgrade if possible (it needs it!). The goal is to update it and give to my Son as a great gaming system. The current specs are:

Intel Core i7 920 2.66GHz
8GB 1333Mhz DDR3
ATI Radeon HD 5970
1 TB SATA-II 7,200 RPM
850W PSU
MOBO is an mATX Alienware 04VWF2 Intel X58 Chipset

I would like to switch out the MOBO to a Z270 LGA1151 board (looking at the ASUS ROG STRIX Z270G) so that I can upgrade the processor, RAM, and GPU. Just wanted to check if anyone has heard of any issues as this is a proprietary Alienware MOBO I want to replace. Appreciate any advice - thanks!        -matt c.

Answer:7-year old Alienware Aurora Motherboard Upgrade?

If you're really going to replace the mainboard/RAM/GPU/etc., you may as well just build a new system.  It's not worth living with the limitations of the OEM case for the sake of saving $50-100 out of several hundred dollars in new hardware.
You will need a new copy of Windows -- if you change the mainboard, the OEM copy won't work (activate) as it's tied to the Alienware BIOS.

From what I can understand I get the BSoD randomly and not because of a spesific program or game.
The computer is new so it shouldn't be hardware related, unless something came defect somehow.
The first weeks I didn't get any blue screens that I can rememeber so things should be working okey?
But the last weeks I've gotten the BSoD often, sometimes several times a day.

multiple_irp_complete_requests is the message that appears on the bluescreen and from my attempt at checking out a minidump file it points me to ntoskrnl.exe as the cause.
From searching around none of them gives me an answer to what I can do to solve my problem.

I tried to follow the instructions for posting here and I followed step 1, and then step 2..
Now this window that popped up just says Waiting for SystemInfo over and over and over..
Can't really do step 3 and 4 then?

I can add step 5 still.
5. Please provide answers for -
? OS - Vista/ Windows 7 ?
Windows 7 Professional.
? x86 (32-bit) or x64 ?
? What was original installed OS on system?
Windows 7 Professional
? Is the OS an OEM version (came pre-installed on system) or full retail version (YOU purchased it from retailer)?
If the question is if it's pre-installed or purchased seperate and then installed, the answer is pre-installed.
? Age of system (hardware)
I got the computer in the end of november, 2011.
? Age of OS installation - have you re-installed the OS?
Same as above. Never re-installed, yet..

Answer:[SOLVED] 2 months old Alienware Aurora R3 getting the BSoD

Computers are not like cars. Getting a brand new manufactured PC has potential of croaking on day one of use as opposed to the same with a car, which is extremely unlikely. Most likely when dealing with instability in a new system, it's manufacturing defects in the hardware and installation that cause woes. Keep that in mind.

When I see multiple IRP requests, however, that's typically a driver bug. Turn on Driver Verifier, then any crashes you have provide us the minidumps (they are located in /Windows/Minidump). That should give us the information we need.

i have a old Alienware Aurora (2008) desktop laying around, I am soon building a custom computer with new technology (i5|ddr3|GTX etc.. but the new case im getting dosent have any led lights on it. I really love the sleek look of the new case although theirs no lights, now i know alienware (especially back in he day before dell owned them) uses a lot of proprietary parts that being the odd led system chip on the bottom of the case. but i know its a long shot but i was wondering if i could take the entire system out of there and re wire it in my new pc case?

Answer:Think i can move the Alienware Aurora (2008) led/lights to another...

Might be easier to just order online an led lighting solution.
Do a search for "led lighting for computer cases" for less than $20 US.

I have an Alienware lappy and am amazed at the servicing ability.

Unlike a Surface or other laptops, virtually every component can be replaced,
including the camera, keyboard, system board, speakers, display hinges,
memory (I upgraded from 8GB to 32 GB - the swap took about 30 seconds),
video card fans, touch pad, wireless card and cpu heat sink etc...

I'm trying to install a Sound Blaster Z on my R5, as I don't particularly care for the integrated sound card. What is the correct procedure for doing this (i.e. what do I need to disable, etc.)? I went into the BIOS, but I don't see anything about any integrated devices. My apologies if this has been asked before, but I've searched Google up and down, and I can't seem to get a straight answer anywhere. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'm in the process of overclocking this Alienware Aurora I bought a few months ago. I just got the i7 920 stable at 3.6 ghz on liquid cooling. I know I might be able to go higher, but I am happy with the clock speed right now.

I have a Radeon HD 5970 installed on this rig, and what I want to know is, can my PC take the OC of this card?

I have a 875 watt PSU so I know that I can squeeze the overvolting, but what I don't know is if this alienware motherboard can handle the load. Perhaps you guys could point me in the right direction.

I started OCing the card, but after two crashes after a few hrs (each crash), I'm starting to get paranoid about whether or not the Mobo can take the overvoltage. I know I should have researched this earlier before getting started, but here we are... Can you guys help me figure this out?

I was using MSI afterburner and my settings were:

1162 mV on the cores
850 mhz core OC
1200 mhz mem OC

I have since backed off and lowered to stock voltage, and taken the OC back to about 825 mhz on the cores to avoid any potential catastrophe until I can know for sure if this PC can handle the overvolting on this card.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Overclocking the Radeon HD 5970 on an Alienware Aurora (Can it be done?)

You should have no problem overclocking to 850. I have done so for about two months now without any problems. I've heard the mobo is pretty high end (i think version of the Intel X58 mobo) for alienware, though alienware does not disclose its vendors.

I have Alienware Aurora, i7 [email protected]
5970 at 1162mv 850mhz 1200mhz.

I've seen many people overclocking the 5970 beyond my stats. But my stats seem to be the most accepted "standard" overclock.

P.S. 10.5a drivers with June 23rd CAP is the best so far. Currently testing the 11.1a. May go back to 10.5a.
