Preferred Solution: change my boot mode from UEFI to legacy

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi all, I've been a long-time reader of this forum, but this is my first message. I bought last year a T420 from eBay and promptly installed Ubuntu on the HDD. Last week I bought a Samsung mSATA SSD to reinstall Ubuntu on it and use the HDD as data disk. I took the opportunity to test UEFI and enabled UEFI in the BIOS. The installation was successful but when I plugged it to the dock station I lost the USB connectivity (no USB keyboard or wireless mouse), so I decided to revert UEFI to "legacy" and reinstall it. To my surprise, once I reverted to "legacy" boot I lost the ability to boot from any of the possibilities: the original HDD or even the Ubuntu DVD install media. I've played with all the BIOS options, going back to UEFI boot, and it doesn't even detect now my installation on the SSD  I went yesterday to an official Lenovo shop and they told me it was a software issue and that reverting back to BIOS should be enough, so I downloaded the "BIOS Update Bootable CD" from: http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/migr-77076 but it doesn't boot either, so I'm really stuck and any help would be greatly appreciated!  Thanks in advance.Pablo

Is it "normal" that the M.2 slot on these is only bootable in UEFI mode? I wasted my last day installing Mint 18.1 about 20 times with different bios settings, 2.5" SSDs, M.2 SSDs, etc. The M.2 slot functions fine regardless of whether the notebook using Legacy or UEFI mode, and I can install whatever OS to the drive without issue, however the system won't boot to the M.2 SSD when set to Legacy mode... and this isn't an NVMe SSD, it's M.2 SATA.  Legacy works with the 2.5" SSD fine. Thanks

When i try and boot my Windows 7 x64 DVD in UEFI mode my computer completely skips it and boots my hard drive. However when I boot in legacy mode i can boot the CD but i get the error 'Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk is of the GPT partition style'. I'm assuming i get this error because i'm not booting via UEFI mode.

Tried various search terms, but nothing came up.

Upgraded to windows (from factory default windows 8) 10 while it was still free. Wiped the drive and tried to reinstall windows 10 (home) and all I got was an error saying that can't install on non gpt partition. Turns out the only way can figure out how to boot usb is via legacy mode. Plugged hard drive into desktop machine and says all the partitions are in fact gpt. Used rufus to burn image to usb, made sure that is gpt as well. For fun, tried the system restore function, but fails right away. I just deleted the windows partition (not the entire drive).

Was playing around with settings in the bios:

Insydeh20 setup utility. gpt option (usb) - select option
Get his popup -> input file path?

Answer:how to boot usb in uefi mode (not legacy) for inspiron 3531

When you reinstall there are some critical partitions.  You cannot leave any of those of the drive and reinstall Windows 10.  Data partitions should be OK.
To boot a USB drive as UEFI, assuming your system has that capability, you have to format the USB drive as FAT 32.  It must use an x64 bit version of Win 10.
When you boot you should be able to see a Boot Device Menu.  Look for something that shows as UEFI and boot to that.  If you don't see a UEFI option, the Bios may be set incorrectly or the USB drive is not configured correctly.

At any point in the future, is a new BIOS/UEFI firmware going to be released that unlocks the selection for "UEFI" on the boot mode? I have an operating system/bootloader that would be better served with the ability to switch to a legacy BIOS style mode as opposed to being locked into UEFI only. Consider this a formal request as well, to include a legacy boot mode in a future release. I know there's quite a few of us who would consider this a very useful change.

We are pushing a new image this summer but we need to make boot and file system changes, my boss wants me to automate this process. the goals are to desable legacy in bios, enable UEFI, select PXE,  change UeFI boot order (usb,cd, NIC, Hd) using the Bios configuration tool at command line. I have the config.ini file from the bios. can I make all those changes at once or do I have to reboot in between enable UEFI and changeing the boot order The why: we are moving from MBR to GPT with the new image Win10, and we save time on the boot by disabling legacy. The boss says so. (the short answer) any tips or suggestions welcome.

Due to the issue with Windows 7 being too dark on the Ideapad S400 (backlight issue), I decided to roll back to windows 8. To install Windows 7 from our deployment server I changed the BIOS to Legacy Support., but then to install Windows 8 I changed the BIOS back to UEFI but now under FI (Boot) only the network card is listed and not the hard-drive. If I roll back to BIOS to legacy then the hard-drive is listed as a boot device. Sound like a bug. I really got the feeling that the BIOS of the Ideapad S400 is a beta. Will Lenovo issue a BIOS update in the near future? This is the worse laptop I've even seen so far!

Answer:hard-drive not listed in BIOS after changing boot mode from Legacy to UEFI.

hi bthjf1,

AFAIK, to see the HDD under UEFI boot on the BIOS, you must install Windows 8 in UEFI (HDD being formatted as GPT).

Try to:
1. Install Windows 8 in UEFI as stated in this guide.
2. Boot into the BIOS, press F9 to reset BIOS to default then check if HDD is now listed under EFI boot

Hope this helps

Hi,

I just bought a toshiba satellite L10W-B and I'm very disappointed with the fact that the option to change the boot mode from UEFI to CSM/legacy isn't available, why is that ?
Can somebody tell me how to do this ?
The bios isn't even accessible, only the "Toshiba utility setup" instead which doesn't give many options, how can I access the BIOS, the real one ?
I've been around internet for hours, didn't find the answer.

Hi all,

Currently having a wake on lan issue with a certain computer.

The machine is setup correctly but the windows boot information is stored in a 100mb UEFI partition, and when the computer wakes on lan, it will not boot windows, just sit at a blank screen.

When it wakes on lan it is trying to boot from the legacy device (same blank screen happens if you choose to boot from it from bios)

ive tried updating the bios but no luck, all settings seem to be as they should be.

Is there some trick to get it to load the UEFI MBR, or is there a safe way other then reformatting the machine to move the MBR over to the legacy device itself?

Thanks for any help.

Answer:Boot UEFI from wake on lan, or convert UEFI MBR to legacy.

Back up your files, unplug all other HD's and peripherals,

Boot into BIOS setup to enable Legacy BIOS. Next check BIOS Boot order for an EFI Boot Disk: remove it, set DVD drive first to boot, HD second. Then set SATA controller to AHCI. Save changes and Exit.

Then boot into installer DVD or flash stick burned or written using tool and latest ISO for your licensed here.

At first installer screen Press Shift + F10 to open a Command Box, type:

DISKPART
LIST DISK
SEL DIS 0 (after confirming Windows 7 target HD #)
CLEAN
CONVERT MBR
CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY SIZE=102400 (for 100gb partition, adjust as desired)
FORMAT FS=NTFS LABEL="WINDOWS 7"
ACTIVE
EXIT
EXIT

Next click Install Now to Clean Install Windows 7 to the partition you created. If it fails then report back at which step and the verbatim error message.

In addition read over these steps to understand the tools and methods which work best to get and maintain a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7. The steps are the same for retail.

While trying to fix a boot error (0xc0000034) on my laptop I accidentally changed my computer's BIOS from UEFI to Legacy, is there a way to change it back?
The computer is clean so it doesn't matter if it's a method that causes loss of data. I have a bootable USB with windows 10 (maybe 8) on it. At some point I got into the menu for this, but must of the times I just get straight to the BIOS. And when I got to the menu for installing windows, I got the error message "windows cannot be installed on this disk. The selected disk is of the GPT partition style." so I couldn't get past from there anyway
The computer is an MSI GE70 2QE
I can't find a way here to post photos from my iphone (and can't use the computer), but here is what it says on the startup screen of the BIOS. The only options I have from here is either "Delete RAID volume" or "Reset Disks to Non-RAID" (none of which I know what it means)
Physical devices:
ID. Device model. TYPE/STATUS(Vol Id)
0. PLEXTOR PX-256M6. Member Disk (0)
1. PLEXTOR PX-256M6. Error Occurred (0)
4. HGST HTS721010A9. Non-RAID Disk
I know I fucked up and should have done more research before tweaking with this, but the damage is done so I greatly appreciate any help

Hi, If your HDD has a guid partition table, the current OS will have to be installed in 'uefi' mode - the only way around this would be to reformat the drive with MBR and reinstall the OS using a boot option ( cdrom or flash drive ) that does not have a (uefi) suffix. Regards, DP-K

Hi,
I recently bought a hp pavilion 15 au038ca model. It came with a lot of bloatware so I decided to clean install Windows10. I used Windows Key Finder software to find my key since it's embedded in the bios, wrote it down and went ahead to install the same version as my previous windows: Windows 10 home x64.
Before I even started with the installation, I could not see my device in the boot options( I was using a bootable usb drive). So I went to the bios and enabled legacy support and when I switched my laptop back on into boot device options, there it was: a usb drive option. So i selected it and went on ahead to do a clean install of windows. Now the problem is, whenever I load up system defaults in bios and save it, my laptop does not boot into windows. It gives me this error:

Boot device not found.

Please install an operating system on your hard disk.

Hard Disk - (3F0)

...But as soon as I enable Legacy mode, it boots up into windows. My question is, how do I install windows into uefi mode and not legacy mode? Because I read many articles saying that uefi equals faster boot times and has more advantages than the older legacy mode. And whenever i try making a bootable uefi disk, there is still no device options when only the uefi mode is on. But when the legacy mode is on, then I can see my disk under the boot device options.
Second question, how do I change my hard disk partition to gpt from mbr?
Thank you

I want to wipe a Windows 8.1 laptop and clean install Windows 7 from a CD. Laptop is an ASUS X551M.
I understand that with Windows 8 you have this UEFI, which needs to be changed such that you can change the boot order.
Following online instruction says to hold Shift whilst pressing restart then going into troubleshoot, advanced options, UEFI Firmware settings then restart (on the blue screen).
Then in the UEFI Bios Disabling the Secure Boot Control in the Security tab. Ive doe this but it also says in the Launch CSM option to change to enable. Problem is this option is not showing. So how to I change to Legacy mode so that I can change the Boot device order and boot from the CD?

Q2: if clean install is done with an English US version instead of Spanish will I loose the activation?

Q3: I tried changing the display & speech language option to English in my current Spanish OS, rebooted several times and get the persistent Windows Search "these results may be incomplete" error after Indexing is completed as reported in other threads while it works fine when reverting back to Spanish display mode. I have lenovo g580. in bios setup under boot tab, it says UEFI boot 'Enabled'. but when i go to cmd and type 'msinfo32', it says my system has LEGACY bios mode. what actually is it? if i have UEFI mode enabled, why it shows legacy in msinfo32? please help........

Answer:BIOS mode-UEFI or Legacy in Lenovo G580?

hi firozmkhatri,

According to this FAQ, the UEFI BIOS has to emulate legacy BIOS so that existing applications aren't broken (this means 32bit programs since UEFI only works with 64bit versions of Windows). If you have UEFI enabled under BIOS and see it's saying Legacy under msinfo32, you probably have a Windows 7 system installed on legacy mode as the Lenovo G580 supports UEFI with an emulated Legacy.support.

To check if you have Windows installed on UEFI (GPT) or Legacy mode (MBR), check your drive volume:
1. Click Start, right-click Computer and then click Manage
2. On the Computer Management window, choose Disk Managemment
3. Right click on any of the Disk (i.e. Disk 1), choose Properties and on the Volumes tab, see Partition Style

Windows with MBR Partition:Spoiler (Highlight to read)
Windows with GPT PartitionSpoiler (Highlight to read)

I have an Inspiron 660. Last fall I upgraded Win 7 to Win 10/64.  I was looking at the System Information recently and I noticed that the BIOS mode was set to Legacy.
I see that UEFI is a step up from BIOS.
Is it safe to switch to UEFI after upgrading in Legacy BIOS mode?

Hi, I bought a Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E320 with 128GB SSD but without OS. I installed Windows 7 and ubuntu and had issues with dual booting because of the UEFI. So I decided to change from UEFI to legacy mode in bios. After that I cann't enter BIOS any longer. If I press F1 on start I get "Entering BIOS Setup" but the BIOS doesn't open instead immediatly Windows starts. The same with F12 to select the boot drive selection the message appears but the menu doesn't open instead Windows starts. How can I enter again the BIOS or reset the options? I tried BIOS Update with BOOT Cd from Lenovo support site but it didn't help. Thank you for advice Best regards bubbas

Answer:Edge E320, can't enter bios after changing from uefi to legacy mode

Hi bubbas and welcome to the Community,

This is a long shot, but take out the hard drive, the battery and unplug the ac adapter and hold the power button down for about 15 seconds.

Then plug in just the ac adapter without the battery or hard drive and start the machine and see if you can get into the bios.

If you can, reload the defaults and reboot.  See if you can get in again and you might want to check the F12 to see if that works.

All options are blanked out except for "exit". How can I get it to let me edit the settings again?

Answer:Cannot change UEFI settings / UEFI stuck in read only mode

You may have to disable the "Secure Boot" option first.

Hi everyone, I'm trying to set up a dual boot on my X220, but can't seem to get it working.I tried to follow the tutorials available on ThinkWiki about SSD partitions and optimization, but it didn't work. Also, I'm a bit confused between MBR and GPT, and UEFI and LEGACY, and Syslinux and Grub. From what I read, it seems we're supposed to use GPT partitions with UEFI boot, which is what I'm trying to set up. Have any of you successfully set up a dual boot Linux (Arch) + Windows (7 home) on SSD and HDD?If so, could you give me the options you chose for partitioning and boot? I'm thinking about a UEFI boot with GPT partitions. For Linux, / (root) and /home on the SSD, and var on the HDD.For Windows, I don't know. Should I install the whole OS on the SSD, and give it access to a DATA partition on the HDD? I'm aware my post doesn't provide much information about my issues, but what I'm looking right now is a configuration that is known to be working on the X220, and on which I can focus my work. Also, the configuration should minimize the number of read and write on the SSD. Thank you

Answer:Dual Boot on SSD + HDD: MBR/GPT? UEFI/LEGACY?

I'm not too used with uefi machines, but what I'm doing usually is to install grub at the start of the linux partition, not on the mbr (say  on /dev/sda3 not on /dev/sda) then I use easybcd (from windows) to add the linux partiton (and any other OS) to the standard win7/win vista bootloader.

Hi, My comany is purchasing HP EliteDesk 800 G2, some comes with HDD and some with SSD.We deploy Windows 7 x64 using SCCM using legacy boot. On a machine with HDD installed I can configure the boot options to use legacy boot, but when I replace the disk to a SSD drive the only boot option for this drive is UEFI.That causes the deployment to fail because the drive need to be partitioned as GPT.On the other hand, if I disable legacy boot, PXE boot to UEFI and partition the disk as GPT, after the image deployment the disk is unable to boot with 0xc000000d error (I imagine the cause is Windows 7 support becuase it does work on Windows 8.1). Bottom line, I can install Windows 7 on a HP EliteDesk 800 G2 only if legacy boot is enabled and I partition the disk as UEFI.Is there any way of forcing the SSD to boot as legacy and not UEFI?Is this issue caused by the workstation or is it enforced by the SSD? thanks.

I have disabled the secure boot option and enabled the Legacy boot option which allows me to boot from USB stick. However, UEFI takes precendence over Legacy boot and I don't want that. For a little school project that we are running we want to run the educational OS Sugar on Stick(on a USB stick) to run straight from the stick instead of kids pressing 3-4 different buttons to get to that.  In short, I want to change boot priority from UEFI first to Legacy. Let me know how to do it? Whether its possible or not? If not, then I don't need these 4 laptops that I ordered and I will return the laptops. Thanks a lot in advance. -Ritesh

If your PC or laptop supports UEFI and legacy mode then the following tips may help you. Legacy enabled:If the bios setting is legacy enabled then hard drives and USB devices will normally boot.  If you are using two independent hard drives that are not connected by boot manager then the UEFI boot hard drive will always boot first before the legacy hard drive unless the bios allows you to change the boot priority. Legacy disabled (UEFI mode):If the bios setting is legacy disabled then only UEFI devices will boot.  You may run into no hard drive selection menu, no boot option menu or Boot Device not Found followed by a message Hard Disk (3f0). USB flash drives boot considerations:If you wish to boot up a USB flash device using Windows 7 repair, Windows 8 repair, Windows 7 or Windows 8 installation media then be sure to create the flash drive formatted as FAT32.  You may notice a bootable flash drive showing twice in the boot menu, one marked UEFI and one not marked UEFI.  Both will boot up. The popular MS Windows 7 USB WIndows installation media creation tool will create a NTFS flash drive using a Windows 7/8 iso file in NTFS format which is not bootable in UEFI mode. It works fine in legacy mode.  To get around the NTFS issue, create the flash drive in NTFS then copy the contents to your hard drive, quick format the flash drive to FAT32 and then copy back the contents back to the hard dr... Is there currently any way to configure a custom boot logo for UEFI booting? I can only find methods for Legacy users, but no luck with UEFI.

Answer:Custom Boot Logo Windows 10 UEFI Boot Method? (Non-Legacy)

You can change the boot logo in UEFI mode by modifying the relevant ACPI table (BGRT) with an EFI application before booting. AFAIK, the only application for this is currently my own, HackBGRT. (Open-source and all, so I certainly hope this doesn't count as advertising.) Be sure to tell if you find any other choices.

I have a Thinkpad T430u and I am unable to get a bootable USB flash drive to boot. I have made the bootable drive in PowerISO, I have used Window's tool, and I have also tried the following (suggested on these forums): "Create another flash drive with a single FAT32 partition using DISKPART in a command windows:  list disk, select disk, clean, create partition primary, format fs=fat32 quick, assign. " But that didn't work either. Nothing I have done has allowed me to boot to the USB flash drive. The flash drive isn't the problem, because I can boot to it on my other computers. I have turned UEFI/legacy boot to both, as well as to Legacy only, and that doesn't help. I have turned off secure boot, and that didn't help either. I have searched a lot and tried everything out there.. but nothing works. I even bought a USB DVD drive to test and see if I could boot to a burned DVD and that didn't work either. I am able to reach the BIOS settings as well as the boot device menu, but the only options available are ATA HDD and PIC Lan boot.. the flash drive never shows up as an option. I have moved USB HDD and USB FDD to the top of the boot order in bios but that doesn't help either. Any suggestions? BTW I have tried Windows 7 and 8 ISOs, as well as a Linux distrubtion and various bootable partition utilities.. I even tried Lenovo's own UEFI diagnostic created with Lenovo's bootable USB generator.. nothing will boot.

After running MBR2GPT on my system with a successful completion, I realized that I don't know how to change the BIOS from legacy to UEFI, resulting in the inability to boot the GPT'ed system. I was running Windows 10 Creator on an MBR system using an MSI H61M-E23 (version 2) motherboard. I made the mistake of thinking that setting the boot mode to UEFI would be easy - I tried setting the first boot device to UEFI, but that did not work. Hello, first post here...

First, some context: I have a Dell Inspiron 15R SE that came with Windows 8.

I've managed to get a working dual-boot system with Ubuntu 12.10. I can't remember exactly how I done that, but I remember that I had to disable secure boot. I think that the boot configuration those days was:
Secure boot: DisabledLoad legacy option rom: EnabledBoot list option: Legacy

This "configuration" worked perfectly for 6-7 months.

Then, one day (last week, can't remember the exact day), when I was using Windows 8 the computer crashed. I hard-rebooted and got this screen:

I've searched a lot, looking for solutions and after executed boot-repair from a Ubuntu LiveCD dozens of times I've decided to eliminate Ubuntu temporarily and focus to get a system with Windows 8 working nice.

Then I used my recovery DVDs to recover the system. Yup, Windows has booted. But when I restarted first time I got the same error. Then I, digging a solution, pressed F12 after a reboot and got here:

The highlighted option allows me to boot into Windows 8. So I went to boot options (F2) and changed the following configuration:
Load legacy option rom: DisabledBoot list option: UEFI

Now I can boot directly to Windows without need to press F12.

But my objective isn't complete. I want to erase all Ubuntu entries from the seconds image and restore the legacy boot from the first imagem (because they worked before).

I did two things:
I erased all partitions related to Ub... Read more

hi MattQE,

Welcome to the Forums.

Just to verify, is the unit originally Windows 8 and this problem occured after you upgraded to Windows 8.1? Any changes that you made to the machine before the problem occured?

From the looks of it, this seems like a hardware failure but can you try the following:
1. Boot into the BIOS and set the following options (if applicable):

Security Tab:
Secure Boot = Disabled

Exit Tab:
OS Optimized Defaults = Other OS / Disabled

2. When done, press Fn+F10 to save and exti and observe.

Let me know how it goes.

Hi all,
I currently own two latitudes; a dell Latitude E6540 and a recently picked up Latitude D630. Am I able to use UEFI on the D630, first of all, and for the E6540, how to switch boot modes? (I'm running Windows 10, though he came to me running 7). I tried simply toggling the setting in BIOS but after doing so, I'm greeted with the nice message of no boot device found (even when my technician friend messes with it, he gets the same thing). Suggestions would be excellent. Thanks.

Answer:How to successfully toggle a latitude's boot from Legacy to UEFI?

The D630 does not have UEFI - it's BIOS only.
To change from UEFI to legacy or vice versa, the hard drive needs to be repartitioned and Windows needs to be reinstalled.

My sister-in-law was installing a printer software and after it downloaded and rebooted it froze on blue screen with please wait. She left it that way for hours then finally powered down and restarted only to come to the same screen. I received it from there. I started by loading setup and doing a HDD scan everything looks good, but still please wait. Restored factory defaults and now it loads to boot device not found. Just bought a Dell Optiplex 7010 Mini-Tower with Win 8 Pro 64-bit, 8 GB RAM, 500 GB hard drive and an Intel i5 3470 processor. Right now, it has Dell BIOS version A16.

It is normally in UEFI ON and Secure Boot ON, so that F12 on bootup (one-time boot options) does NOT normally show the CD-DVD as a boot option. OK - no problem.

However, if I reboot with F12 and select both UEFI OFF (meaning Legacy ON) and Secure Boot OFF and reboot, then F12 DOES show me the CD-DVD as a boot option, but if I actually try to boot up from a bootable CD, I get an error message.

I have practiced with two bootable CDs - a Knoppix and an Aomei Backupper, both made on earlier machines. Both these CDs work as boot-up CDs in my old XP machine, and the Aomei Backupper CD also worked in someone else's Win 7 Pro 64-bit machine.

What's wrong?

Again, please let me repeat that I am trying to boot from the CD-DVD AFTER I have turned OFF UEFI, turned ON Legacy and turned OFF Secure Boot.

Thanks.

Answer:No Legacy boot from CD-DVD - UEFI and Secure Boot are OFF

I had to buy a new (SSD) HD and had trouble booting from a disc until I enabled Legacy Mode and disabled Secure Boot in BIOS. Boot orders in both UEFI and Legacy are the same, with DVD Rom set to boot first. Also, the settings for IPV4 and IPV6 are set to IPV4 (Legacy) when they were once set to BOTH IPV4 AND 6 and are unable to be changed, if that's important. Now whenever I boot up I always get a "No Boot Device Found" message until I hit "Enter" at which point i'm allowed entry into my precious Win10 laptop.  I disabled Legacy in BIOS, but then i get a different "No Boot Device Found" error, and hitting "Enter" doesn't help. Could some kind person tell me how to correct this, and possibly why it happened and the differences in each option? I'll settle for how to correct this, though, with much gratitude.  MUCH gratitude. GN

UEFI is needed on your actual windows 10 installation. most of Linux distribution can boot on UEFI settings too, you just need to "burn" the .iso file using Rufus, setting EFI/UEFI only as partition scheme and format FAT32.

The problem is that I don't have Boot mode option under advanced- system configuration; the only thing I can do is enabling or disabling secure boot mode in the security tab, which is not enough

I also added a supervisor password; it does add a clear secure boot keys option, but still nothing under advanced tab to switch to Csm.
Clearing keys does not work too.

I tried to boot multiples linux distro and win7 on bootable usb (theses work on others computers), but no luck. Boot order set to usb first of course).
What can I do?

Edit : will put some picture of uefi

Hi, I have a bios version 7 on me pc and I dont have a update for a bios 8.I really need to disable secure boot and enable legacy mode but I dont have that option. Is there a way or a trick that I can do this?

Answer:Disable Secure Boot and enable legacy mode

@Siemen,Did you system originally have WIN 7, as listed here?   If so, the BIOS is correct at rev 7.  You can not  use the newer UEFI graphic cards because there is NO update BIOS available.  Your correct, you do not have a way to disable secure boot and enable legacy. In another post you asked, and got no answer.Yes, the GTX 660 will work, with an adequate new PSU.  Recommend EVGA GTX 600 and Corsair CX600 PSU.  On the GTX 750Ti inquiry, only chance would be the Hybrid vBIOS cards.  PSW<> The GTX 670's are a tad touchy.

Hello, I recently bought Aspire VN7-593G-7212 so I spent all day today trying to install Windows 7 instead of pre-installed W10 because of compatibility and force of habit reasons. With no luck unfortunately. Is is not much of a help that there is no "boot mode" option in bios (v1.00). Is there any workaround or bios update which allows me to successfully install Windows 7? Any help would be very appreciated, it's crucial to me and it would be shame to return such a beauty.  Thanks.

All,I updated my bois to v2.30 last night and found the machine doesn't boot anymore. It kept complaining it can't find a boot loader. After extensive research I found changing the boot mode to "legacy" will revive the OS.I just wonder, do I stuck with legacy mode for the rest of the laptop's life? what's wrong? thanks,

I just got this brand new computer and switched out the hard drive with my current SSD and 16gb of pc-12800 1.35v. Since i wasn't using a UEFI compatible bios before, I switched this one into legacy mode. When I rebooted, the computer just hung at the first screen. It will not go into bios or boot menu or anything. It will accept keypresses for the first few seconds of boot, but then just hangs saying "Entering Setup" or other appropriate messages. Switching the hardware back to the factory parts had no effect on this state. After that I started messing around and found that some older ddr3 ram allowed me to get into the bios and change it back to UEFI. In that mode, even with secure boot disabled, I cannot boot to DVD, USB, SSD, or the original hard drive. It is almost like they aren't recognized. Is there an issue with the 1.11 bios here? Thanks,Bob

Answer:Brand New T540p will not boot in legacy bios mode

I have the same problem.I replaced my ssd with original hard driver ,swith to legacy mode and installed centos, after installation, it could not boot succefully, then I switched back to UEFI, and installed win8 with UEFI, after installation, it also could not boot. After that, I switch back to lagacy and computer hangs at the screen same as you, which shows 'to interrupt normal post?press enter', and nothing could be done to pass it.  after replace old ddr3 ram,  it also made me succesful to enter bios. I switch back to UEFI. the system dit not hang but nothing could be done. If with T540p's original ram, when I press F12, both harddisk and cdrom could not be detected. If with old ddr3, the hardisk and usb showed sucessfully, but when pressed, noghing happend. can anybody help to fix it? Thanks very much.

I have a desktop with a SSD of 250 GB running windows 10, I tried putting it into legacy mode in BIOS for dual booting with Linux Mint. But when I restart to check it, I get error 1962, no operating system found.

I made a partition in C drive and installed Mint on it, but during boot up, I go straight to windows with no mint option.

I tried Windows 10 fast boot stopper from the tutorial here, maybe too late, it made no difference.

EasyBDC is blocked from Linux options in editing boot menu.

I don't want to lose windows 10, but would like Mint as well. Any experience or advice, is there a tutorial?

Hi all!
I have Alienware Aurora R4 machine with three hard drives:

(Local Disk)C: - (Windows 7) the “original” one that I bought with the computer.
(OS)D: - (Windows 10 with all updates) the one I’ve added after the “original” started to show signs of degradation.
(STORE)F: - (no OS) the one I use just to store stuff.
I’ve had dual boot and everything was hunky-dory until last week the C drive have finally kicked the bucket.
First the computer refused to shut down until I forced it. And next morning it took more than TWO hours to boot. When I finally got to the window explorer the C drive was still there but I couldn’t access or do anything to it.
In the old times I could just remove it and set boot priorities in BIOS to boot from drive D. But if I actually remove the dead drive now, the computer says that it has nothing to boot from.
It appears that with UEFI mode enabled

I don’t see the actual drives in the BIOS (It only shows general source types, like Hard Drive, CD/DVD, etc.) and therefore cannot boot from a particular internal drive.
I cannot assign Active Partition
I cannot remove the dead C drive

So, what am I supposed to do? Please, HELP!

Answer:Aurora-R4, How to assign a particular boot drive with UEFI boot mode enabled?

I received a new P51 Laptop and I'd like to install linux on it (dual boot with Windows). CD/USB boots perfectly fine in legacy BIOS mode. But when I switch to UEFI only (even with Secure Boot disabled!), I can't boot from CD/USB anymore. In the boot menu (F12) the options are shown, but after selecting to boot from CD/USB, the screen goes black and quickly returns to the boot menu. The installation media contains an EFI loader, so this can't be the issue. Further secure boot is disabled. So - to my understanding - it should theoretically work. And I don't want to fall back to legacy BIOS boot. Anyone else experienced this problem? Does anyone have a suggestion on how to solve this issue?

Hello , I have a laptop HP pavillion g6-2310er. My hdd was cleared accidently - all partitions are gone. But i have had retail win 8 key that I didnt use before. So I made an usb stick with bootable windows installiation but I couldnt install windows in uefi mode because bios doesnt see my usb stick in uefi mode , bios can only see it in legacy mode , so i installed windows in legacy mode without uefi support. And my question is why do u guys not allow user to install software in uefi mode or do u just force us to buy recovery disks for that? So have i choice to install os in uefi mode without your recovery disk because i bought windows retail version and i dont want  waste my money on your recovery disks?
