Preferred Solution: How do I turn on Thumbnails?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi al4x! Here's step-by-step instructions:

Thumbnail Previews - Enable or Disable

1. Open Windows Explorer

2. Click "Organise" and choose "Folder and Search Options".

3. Click on the "View" Tab

4. Under the "Files and Folders" heading, tick "Always show icons, never thumbnails."

5. Click Ok.

That's it!

Hope I Helped,

I keep several programs active most of the time. This is indicated by a bar under the icon. Mousing the icon of the currently open program window shows a thumbnail view of the current window(s), which stays visible until moving away. However, mousing the other icons shows a very brief thumbnail -- not enough to tell what's happening. When no windows are active all active icons show and retain thumbnails. Is this by design or is it changeable?

I just did a reinstall of XP Pro and am having trouble with video files being "in use" when trying to move/delete them (only a several second lag, but it is annoying me). It has to do with a preview being generated in the details pane in the bottom left corner of Explorer. I eventually figured out how to turn off the preview option on my last install but have forgotten how I did it. Under folder options I have "do not cache thumbnails" unchecked. Is this the setting I need to change? Or is it somewhere else? It seems to me I need an option to not show a preview in the details pane.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Answer:How to Turn of Thumbnails in Details Pane?

I haven't done an XP install, but I have had problems like yours. Here is how I fix them without reinstalling, in case it may help? (The instructions may be different for XP.)

Thumbnails are used as icons when the folder is in Thumbnail view. This is usually not the problem, since they are usually cached after the first time. I turn them off by getting the Properties window for that folder. (I just go to the parent folder and right-click on the folder there, then choose Properties.) Then in one of the tabs, I find the Enable thumbnail view option and uncheck it. But, again, this is probably not the problem.

The preview thumbnail (actually, the whole details pane) can be turned off by unchecking View as Web Page in the View menu in one folder. Or, you can turn it off for all folders by going to View menu > Folder Options > General tab > choose Custom, then click the Settings button and in the View Web Content in Folders section, choose Only for folders where I select "as Web Page" [View menu]

If I want the details pane, but not the preview, I edit the HTML of the window. I don't know if you want to try this, it can be confusing, but here's what I do, just in case:
I right-click on the detail pane (or you can use the View menu), and click Customize this Folder... then choose create or edit HTML document. This allows me to customize that details pane. To remove only the worst case files from the preview, I see if I can find "var w... Read more

Recently I downloaded a file converter which, after installation, associated all my video files with itself. Previous to downloading this programme my .avi, .mkv files etc were all displayed simply as an icon, yet now they are all displayed as a thumbnail picture. The only solution I have found for reverting my video files back to being displayed simply as an icon is via Folder Options, 'Always show icons, never thumbnails'. However, selecting this option also disables the thumbnail preview for my .jpeg and other image files. Is there any way to disable my video files being displayed with a thumbnail whilst keeping the thumbnail preview for images? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Disabling video thumbnails whilst keeping image thumbnails enabled?

Does anybody have any ideas on this please?

Hi,

I have unchecked the option to 'show icons instead of thumbnails' (view>options>folder options) and I have checked 'show icons' (performance>advanced) but still I get icons instead of thumbnails. I have closed and restarted file explorer multiple times to no change. I have posted the screenshot below to show the current settings. Any help would be appreciated!

Thank you.

Answer:Thumbnails not displaying: Unchecked 'show icons'/checked 'thumbnails'

When you right click on the folder itself and select properties, there is a tab called customise. In this tab you can select what type of folder you want and choose Pictures. You can have this cascade down to subfolders as well. As for the other settings you mentioned, I usually keep my folder settings as the defaults.

I'm not talking about thumbnail previews since I've got Aero turned off. I'm talking about the annoying little box that pops up when I hover over an application in the taskbar. It's just a litte box with the icon and title of the window and since I don't group applications on my taskbar, it's unnecessary and annoying. Any ideas on how to turn these off?

Anyone? Does anyone know what the feature is called so maybe I can google it?

I admit, I love Vista and since drivers have become stable, Iíve not had any big issues, but there is one thing that Iíve been trying to figure out for a while now with no success and its really bugging me.

Live preview thumbnails seem to go ďblankĒ after a while. If an app has been running for a while, the live preview gets replaced by a static icon. Seems to be some sort of resource management issue, but Iíve been trying to figure out if there is some sort of configuration that can be adjusted to increase some sort of resource limit or turn it off altogether.

Answer:Vista Live Thumbnails become Dead Thumbnails

i've formatted, but last i checked, i had realtime previews of windows, only if the window was open

if i minimized the window, i would only get static images. Are you having the same problem, that might be the way it's supposed to work, i' m not sure

Hey all,

Another minor, non-life-threatening irritation:

Running Windows XP Home Edition on a PC, "5.1.2600 Service Pack 1 Build 2600".

When i browse my folders on Thumbnails view, Windows seems to assign *random* pictures from throughout my hard drive to act as the thumbnail for some folders. Actually it's not totally random; when i assign a picture to act as the thumbnail for one folder, it works fine, but then a week or so later i will find that windows has used that picture as the thumbnail for some other completely unrelated folder, elsewhere on the hard drive.

I can easily fix this by right-clicking on the folder and going to:

Properties -> Customize (tab) -> Choose Picture/Restore Default.

Often, that doesn't work: The properties screen will tell me that the default has been restored, for example, but when i actually look at the folder again, it hasn't actually changed anything.

But then, that problem can be solved by going to

Properties -> Customize (tab) -> Change Icon.

...and re-selecting the icon that was already supposedly being used by that folder. That usually solves the problem.

This is mildly annoying, and if anyone knows a permanent fix, i'd appreciate it. But the main problem I wanted help for was for the "My Documents" folders.

The fix given above will not work for "My Documents", "My Music", "My Pictures", "My Videos", because the properties screens f... Read more

Question: thumbnails

please explain what they mean by thumbnails thanks [email protected]

Answer:thumbnails

Thumbnails are small version of pictures, many to a page, which are used for reference in a larger collection. You can normally click on a thumb nail and it will load the full sized version.BTW it is perhaps not a wise thing to post your email address here. Nice as we all are, you never know if there are any weirdos lurking about. If anyone wants to get in touch, it is best to click on the little envelope at the side of the person's name.Brain

I have a problem, my folders and individual files used to show thumbnails but suddenly it stopped working. All I see is an icon from the default program.
I have read about it and tried to fix it in folder options, tried uniblue but I just can't figure it out why it's not working anymore.

I will be very happy if anyone has an answer
Thank you, Sardelca

First lets make sure they are still turned on and that you used folder options properly.

If that does not work, you may want to try to clean the thumbnail cache.

I have tried everything and can't seem to resolve an issue regarding Windows Explorer not displaying thumbnails correctly. It happens to system chosen folder previews, user customized folder previews and once in a while even to file previews. It randomly selects some to gray out, (not show in full color but more like it has an overlay). When I open a folder with thumbnail view selected, I seldom, if ever get to see all of my thumbnails correctly.

Something peculiar to note is when I use any other software's file browser, the thumbnails, if available, are seen just fine. I have searched all over the web and have found the registry keys which support size and quality of thumbnails and have even used 'TweakUI' to set them back to something standard, to no avail. I've even deleted all 'Thumbs.db' files and changed the icon cache size and deleted and restored it too. I've played with settings till I was late for work and still haven't fixed it. I have gone through a great deal of work customizing a vast video library which needs the thumbnails for proper browsing. This is something I will HAVE to fix!

One thing that comes to mind is that I installed a tweak a while back which was not very useful to me so I got rid of it. The plugin was supposed to allow me to view .tng and .png files in thumbnail view. It wasn't worth it because the screen would flicker whenever I opened a folder in thumbnail view. I haven't t... Does anyone here happen to know a way to correctly respond to this issue?Click to expand...

As this could well be your problem, I would suggest you
press start,
Run
SFC /SCANNOW,
You will usually need your cd for the operating system in the cd/dvd drive , and windows will correct any protected files, if damaged. You will need to keep clicking on retry as it pops up, and it can take some time.(sometimes up to an hour, sitting ther with your finger hovering ready to click-

Worth a try, I have known it to correct a lot of damage.

Question: thumbnails!

I'm not sure if this topic belongs here, if it doesnt I'm sorry, but...

In my folders, I have it set to view as "thumbnails" and the setting stays that way enless I change it. But if I have a program open like Paint Shop or if I'm trying to upload photos to the internet, the folder option automatically is set to view as a list, and I always have to set to view as thumbnails everytime I click on the "open" button.

Is there any way to make it so that it's always set to view as thumbnails?? (on my sisters account, hers is always set to thumbnails, so i know there's a way...)

I attached a screen cap as an example, if this didnt make any sense...

A friend is passing on his old (not so old) pc to another friend, and has asked me to clear the hdd for him leaving just the os (Vista) and certain programs. This I have done, however, he had folders of family pics that he has put on his new pc. Question is, I have cleared the folders but know that windows creates thumbnails of files. Are these held on the hdd in another folder or are they only held in memory at the time the folder is opened and cleared when opening another folder. The reason being If they are held on the hdd where can I find it to delete the thumbnails.

Answer:Thumbnails

As I understand, the folders contain the individual files in whatever format was used when saved (jpg, bmp, tiff etc.)Your computer will give you the sort of listing you want. Thumbnails are just a way of interpreting the same file, but using this takes longer and more screen space to display a lot at once. When using My Computer the operater can choose (in View), how to see the filed pictures.Look at "View" and choose from "Thumbnails" to "Details" as well as four others.

Question: Thumbnails

In transferring my photo albums to a new HD, I lost Picture Tasks, and whilst I was able to reset this function thru View/Customise this Folder, I find that "Tiles" and "Icons" appear as small thumbnails, whilst the thumbnails themselves appear at one quarter size of normal. By clicking refresh they will spring to normal size. Also the pictures (depending of number in a folder) take much longer to load. My OS is Windows XP Professional. The problem does not relate to the new HD, as it also exists in Documents/My Pictures. I would appreciate your advice how to fix. John.

Answer:Thumbnails

Try looking for a file called THUMBS.DB in every picture folder that's affected. Delete it, close the folder window, then re-open. Windows will create a new THUMBS.DB file when you choose to view as thumbnails again. Hopefully that will cure the problem. The old file may have been corrupted. NOTE: you will have to set Folder Options (Control Panel) to show 'Hidden Files and Folders' in order to see THUMBS.DB

Two questions about thumbnail views in Win XP folders.

Some file types (jpg, ppt) show actual thumbnails of the documents. Others (doc, pfd) just show an enlarged version of the application icon, not a thumbnail of the document.

Question 1) Is it possible/how can I get the system to display thumbnail actual thumbnail views of these other document types that currently manuifest only as appication icons. It would seem that XP should be able to thumbnail MS Word doc files.

Question 2) Is it possible to change the size of the thumbnail that is displayed. As it is, it is just exactly a little to small to be able to be useful in distinguishing between documents.

Thanks

Here is the scenario. I burned some photo files onto a DVD+r to store. When trying to view the thumbnails on the DVD in Windows Explorer and the view is set to either extra large, large or medium the photos are displayed momentarily and then they revert back to icons. There are mixed formats involved but again they are displayed on the hard drive and only momentarily on the DVD before reverting back to icons. This is not a problem that the XP computer has, only the Vista one. What can be done short of using XP or a different OS or program to view thumbnails from a DVD.

Question: More XP Thumbnails

I've noticed that the .db file that windows explorer use to store thumbnail data only seems to hold so many thumbnails.
I have a several folders that have LOTS of media (viedos, pictures, mp3s, etc.) in them, and every time I open the folder it takes al long time for windows to re-build the thumbnails. How do I tell win-du-uhows to KEEP the thumbnails it has built?
Been looking for a registry hack for this, can't seem to find it online.

Answer:More XP Thumbnails

First of all, make sure that the registry key:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\DisableThumbnailCache

is set to 0 (0 - Enable Thumbnail Cache, 1 - Disable Thumbnail Cache; Rebuild Every Time). This key is a DWORD type.

Next, you may be able to increase the amount of cached files by lowering the quality of the thumbnails slightly. This is done at:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ThumbnailSize
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ThumbnailQuality

Size can be set anywhere from 32 to 256 (measured in Pixels). Quality can be set anywhere from 50 to 100 (percentage of full quality). Both keys are DWORD type. Try experimenting with these and see if you can get some improvement. First of all, try setting them to minimum (32 and 50) and see if it will handle all of them and it is of usable quality and step up from there.

Apart from these tips, I can't find anything which actually states that you can tell Windows to do a one-time-only build of a thumbnail database then never rebuild until you tell it to. The only thing I can suggest it to section up your media and put them in subdirectories - might make them easier to find then.

Hope this helps.

Question: Thumbnails

How do i view my photographs as thumbnails in the my pictures folder. I have tried the view menu and thumbnails but all i see is the image preview symbol in the thumbnail boxes where the thumbnail pictures should be.Any help appreciated.

Answer:Thumbnails

click here to read about this excellent freeware program. It can browse thumbnails of more file types than Windows Explorer, and has many more abilities. Not sure about the reason for the problem in Explorer though.

how do i get my pictures viewable in a thumbnail....

please email me at removed email addy or return a post.

THANKS!!!

Answer:Thumbnails...HELP!!!!!

Hello and welcome to TSF

You will notice I removed your email addy. This will prevent spamming.

For your issue, enabling Thumbnail View to a folder will not enable this feature to subfolders. Therefore, you will have to select Thumbnail View to all your subfolders one by one.

Question: Thumbnails

Hi. I'm new to this so forgive me if this has been asked before, but if I want to copy pictures from a web page I click on the thumbnail, get an enlarged image, and save it to disc. If there are say 50 thumbnails on one page all of which I want to save (the enlarged image, not the thumbnail) I have to go through this process 50 times. Is there a piece of software out there that will do this automatically for me?Thanks for any help.

Answer:Thumbnails

Are you copying all those pictures without permission from the publisher/website?  Content on websites falls under copyright law.  Most websites will post a copyright notice at the bottom of their pages.  But, that's not legally required for protection under copyright law in the U.S.

Answer:where'd my thumbnails go?

Welcome to Major Geeks!

It would be best if you would attach the logs that were requested from running the READ & RUN ME FIRST.

What thumbnails are you referring to? Are you taking about viewing Thumbnails in Windows Explorer or are you referring to thumbnails for images?

Question: Thumbnails?

Ok, so if I access a picture on an external hard drive, when I view that image from my pc, I have Leopard (osx) and Vista Ultimate x64, is a copy of that image or even a thumbnail, created on my local hard drive, at all, or is all of this data kept in the thumb.dl file (Hiddne within the specific folder)

e.g If i access photo or movie A kept on an external, Is any record of photo/movie A kept on the computer. Even tempirarily? Or is the computer viewing the file completely fromt he external?

Sorry if this is not clear, any feedback is welcome, its amazing the lack of real information on google for this one

Edit: To make things clear, I am mainly concerned with vista, just would also like to know what my macbook pro does in thsi respect.

Answer:Thumbnails?

If the root of your question is "is there any reference to the external file?" Then, yes, ther will be some info on your PC - esp. if you've played/opened the file.

If you want to know if the thumbnails are stored on your PC or in the folder, I believe they are stored in the folder, and in the RAM. So, once you've restarted/flushed RAM they'll be gone w/o the drive connected.

Why do I get a red x instead of the thumbnails? If I followed a bad link, wouldn't the page not load at all? And sometimes clicking on the x brings up the full size image, but usually redirects to a spam page.

Thanks for the help!

Answer:red x instead of thumbnails

More than likely whoever put the page up has a bad href address to the thumbnail. Yet the link still works makes that an even more likely answer.
If it were happening everywhere that would be a different issue.

Question: Thumbnails

Hmmmm????... I have this problem that when I save a picture to my picture folder, for example: A winter picture, and I already have a winter picture, it does not tell me that that file already exists??..so I have to scroll down to see if that winter picture is there??, it use to tell me if a particular file is already there??.. like winter1, if I try to save winter1,it will overite it??So that I can rename it to winter2..Can someone please help me with this.Thank You.
Riptorn.

Answer:Thumbnails

I believe it will only tell you that if the picture you are trying to put it the folder has the same exact name and file type as one already in there. Like you try to put one in as Winter1 and another one in there is Winter-1 then it wouldn't be the same name. Try right clicking on both pictures and look at the properties and see if they're the same file type, etc.

Question: Thumbnails

I don't even know how to ask the question, so let me start:
I will make thumbnails of a bunch of photographs. The originals will be .jpg, the thumbs of the priginals will also be .jpg.

Can I do that?
Do I have that wrong?
Should the originals be .bmp (or something else), just as long as they are ~not~ .jpg?
When loading thumbs on a web page, does the web page consider the total amount of bytes in the ~opened~ images, or just that in the thumbs?
Is horizontal/vertical spacing critical with thumbs?

Answer:Thumbnails

You can do whatever you like. I would stray away from bmp images on a web site because of size. Most people use gif's for thumbnail images, probably because jpgs lose image quality the higher you compress the image. The time it takes to load a web page is determined by the number of elements in it, the size of the images to be loaded and any othr content. The speed for your thumbnails to load is determined by the thumbnail itself, not the image it is linking to. Spacing makes no difference....unless they are off the page of course...LOL

Question: thumbnails

I am resizing photos for a web page are they a standard size for thumbnails, i am resizing to 130x 98 this looks small. i am just starting this, i need some advice.

Answer:thumbnails

Thumbnails will be a different size for different users depending on what screen resolution they each have. So I would try the thumbnail at several screen resolutions and use something that looks good at 1280x1024 (or whatever you think is the most common resolution of your visitors) but yet still looks passably good at a little bit lower screen resolution and at a higher screen resolution. In other words don't be extreme one way or the other at what you think is the most common screen resolution.

Question: Thumbnails

Hi

My windows vista just stopped showing thumbnails.. When I open a folder that contains pictures, it shows the thumbnails for some sec then it is starting to hide them for some reason :S

(btw. I was changing some things in registry to hide the start menu shutdown button, and I installed "VistaGlazz" to get the custom themes to work.)
I uninstalled everything but nothing happened :S

Any idea how to resolve this issue?

Thanks!

Renato

Answer:Thumbnails

Well, problem fixed. Windows didn't show up the low disk space message at the bottom, BUT I had only 100MB left on the C drive and vista switched off the thumbnail service for itself... I can't believe this is so silly, anyway the problem gone and many thanks for Shawn!

Answer:thumbnails

On your web page Right click the picture that is supposed to be large and select "save as" and save it to your hard drive. Open it with irfanview. If it's still small then you are resizing somwwhere along the line. If it displays large then your html code is resizing it.

Weird one here. A few days ago, without changing any settings whatsoever, thumbnails in IE v6 suddenly became ugly, lo-res, smears of color, almost indecipherable. Larger photos are fine, as are photos in PhotoShop, etc. My flat-panel monitor is set to 1152x864, and as I say, hasn't been changed in many months. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Gary

Delete the Thumb.db file if you can't see it then enable show hidden and system files. Windows will recreate it.

This may not seem like a major deal but to me it is really annoying. Ever since I got my new laptop with Windows 7 I have not been able to see thumbnail previews for mp4 videos. I have checked other forums and tried everything that was suggested, including adding to the registry, checking options and downloading various codec packs and following their instructions, but nothing has so far allowed me to see thumbnail previews for mp4s (along with other file types such as mkv).

It seems like such a small thing that surely there is an easy way to fix it, but I am stumped.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks guys.

I'm not sure what happened.

I have Win98SE on a dell laptop.

I keep lots of digital photo files in folders on my desktop. For as long as I remember when I open one of these folders of photo files I can single click on a file and instantly see a thumbnail to the left side of the screen.

Today there are no thumbnails! I'm guessing there is a setting somewhere that would turn this on or off but I can't figure out how it would have gotten changed. I can open the files fine but I sure do miss the thumbnail for browsing.

Any ideas how this can get fixed.

Thanks in advance
