Preferred Solution: Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 docking station does not charge Thinkpad P51 battery.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 docking station does not charge Thinkpad P51 battery.

Everbody's p51 would be the same. The thunderbolt port won't work as a charging port. The thunderbolt specs specify 100w max. That's not enough. Your thunderbolt port is not for charging. To charge via the dock, you need a workstation dock, not a thunderbolt dock. A thinderbolt dock can charge things like an x1 carbon (5th gen) or x1 yoga (2nd gen)

I'm on dual monitor with Lenovo Docking station where my Thinkpad P51 shows 95% charge and it says "Not Charging" - I thought it always charge when we dock it. Is there any power management setting i need to look into? I checked on Lenovo Setting App and then click on Power where it shows 95% Charged. When i scroll further down i noticed that my threshold hoption is OFF so should i assume that 95% is Lenovo factory setting or it has to do with my WIndow 10? Please advice.

Hey, I have the Thinkpad 13 2nd Gen (20J1), and I wonder which docking station suits it.The official site suggest the usb-c dock, but I fear that it wouldn't charge the laptop, since it doesn't have Thundrbolt.Am I right? I thought about the Onelink+ dock as  an alternative, but I would like to know if there are other docks that can charge the device. Thanks!

Hi there,  I have a Thinkpad A31 - 2652 with Windows XP (SP3) and I would like to get a docking tray with the ability to have dual VGA monitors (both external monitors).  I understand that the "ThinkPad T, A, and X Series Dock" has both a VGA and a DVI  I/O ports.  But, here are my questions, what kind of DVI is included with this dock?  Would it be possible then to get a DVI - VGA adapter and attach a monitor to it so the diplay is extended to the second monitor, not just replicated in the second monitor? Thank you.

Answer:Thinkpad A31 Docking Station

I have a T-30 XP Pro that I used a type 2878 Docking Station for a while.  Yes, I put on a DVI adaptor and it looks like you can do 2 x AGP.

Answer:Thinkpad X4 Docking Station

idea pad and thinkpads should not be compatible.... the drive would only work when its connected through the base and then through the dock connector, your idea shouldn't work.....

I am trying to find some info on a ThinkPad docking station - 02K8660 Type 2631. IBM only lists the 02K8662. I have a T23 and an X22 and am afraid to dock and boot for fear of frying one or both. Any ideas where I might find documentation on it, and what model ThinkPads it's compatable with?

Thanks.

I have a WD My Passport USB3 disk disk that runs fine directly on my T530 USB3 port. But if I connect it to my docking stations USB3 port it connects and disconnects all the time. is the a fix for this?

Answer:USB 3 on Thinkpad docking station

What type of charger are you using with the docking station? Maybe its a question of insufficient power. Also, have you tried a usb2 port? Is the behavior the same?

How do I configure the computer to stay on when plugged into the docking station so the two monitors work even when the computer display is down. I dont need the computer display to work when I have the two monitors working. When I have the plug the computer into the docking station with the display closed the power button on the docking station does seem to work the way I am commonly used to using a docking station. Hey, everyone. My ThinkPad W520 should be arriving here tomorrow, and along with it, I ordered the ThinkPad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 - 170W. Currently, I have two monitors, one running at a resolution of 2048x1152, and the other one running at 1680x1050. I'm just now seeing that the limitation for the DVI ports is 1920x1080, so I'm guessing that won't work to hook these up.  My other route that I can go is by buying a DVI to DisplayPort cable, and then hooking them up that way. Lenovo's site claims that the dock has "Two DisplayPorts supporting 2560 x 1600 resolution," but would that mean I can hook up (these) two displays simultaneously? Inside the W520, is the NVIDIA Quadro 2000M Graphics with 2GB DDR3 Memory.  Thanks in advanced! -Joe

Answer:ThinkPad W520 Docking Station

well the real limitation of the single link dvi port is actually the 2048x1152 @ 60 hz, but this resolution monitor is seldomly used so they just use WUXGA or FHD as the stated maximum, 30 inch or 27 inch high resolution LCD uses dual link dvi (which is not supported by the dock dvi).

You can hock up two displayport monitors up and still run the internal LCD, since the new W520 uses the optimus graphics technology.

Hello

I have a Satellite Click 2 Pro 30WB; at the beginning I had no problem with this product, but since a couple of months the docking station battery doesn't charge. I'm able to charge only the battery of the tablet.

Can someone help me?

Thanks

Answer:Satellite Click 2 Pro P30W-B - Docking station battery doesn't charge

Hmm… if this issue didn’t appear from first day of purchase, then the battery docking issue might be related to battery fault.
In such case you will need to contact the service to fix it.

But just one question: is your BIOS up to date?
Check the update within the service station and in case of available new BIOS version; try to update the BIOS to the latest state.

Hi, I am a new user to this forum, I hope someone can assist. I have two Thinkpads one T61p and One T61, the T61p uses a docking station 2504. I works well, I was doing some CPU testing and noticed the T61p was posting a CPU speed at half the normal speed. I was concerned because the T61 was showing better benchmarks. I removed the T61p from docking station and the CPU performance was at full speed. Hello, I am starting a new job where I will b working from home. Before my orientation, I purchased two monitors for my home office. I am currently at my orientation for this week and was just provided my work laptop (ThinkPad T460). My question is: what docking station or stations are available for me to purchase where I can plug my two monitors into the station and be able to use both the monitors AND laptop at the same time. I am not the most techy person, so you may have to dumb down your responses. I've read several reviews on Lenovo docking stations and some people are saying their monitors will only work with the laptop shut or if the laptop is open then only one of the monitors will work. I want both monitors AND the laptop to be able to be used at the same time. Are you able to point me in the right direction to the right docking station or docking stations that would allow me to accomplish this for my home office? Thank you very much in advance!

Hi, I owe a T410(2516) running Windows 8 with Samsung 830 SSD.Recently, I purchased the mini dock plus series 3 and currently I hooked 3 different monitors up and running. Hello,  I have a T420 laptop which I have been very happy with but lately have had some troubles. At work I have a docking station and dual monitor set up. When I leave for the day I do the normal shut down (start, shut down) however when I come home and try to  turn on my laptop without the docking station it will not power on. The next morning when I put in back in the docking station its fine, up and running. I have tried taking out the battery, doing the 10 push power button restart but still nothing works. Anybody have this problem or is it opperator error?  Thanks!

Answer:ThinkPad T420 & Docking Station Power issue

Hi, kmoses0815

Sorry to hear you're having this issue. I have a few questions so that I can better help in hopefully solving the issue.

1) Are you saying your computer only works if it is in the docking stiation?
2) When it does work, is the display working on the both monitors, or just the external?
3) When you try it from outside of the docking station, does anything work? Are there any lights, sounds, etc.?

Best,
Adam

Hello Lenovo Support Forum! I have a Lenovo Thinkpad T43, type 1875, running Windows XP.  I also own an IBM Thinkpad docking station, type 2878. Recently, while my laptop is docked to the docking station the T43 speakers make occasional brief pulsed static sounds. They do not make this sound when the laptop is used off the docking station. Additional information:  I had not used the docking station for a while and, when I docked my laptop to it yesterday, devices I connected to the usb ports on the docking station could not be recognized. This problem was solved by unplugging the docking station power cord for 30 seconds then plugging it back in. How can I now fix the static sound problem? The static bursts are not very loud, but are irritating and make me not want to use the docking station. Thanks! Casd  Update: It is primarily when USB devices are attatched to the laptop ports OR the docking station ports that the static bursts are heard.

Hello, I have just joined this forum because I need to know some technical details of Docking Station Series 3 model number 4338. My laptop is ThinkPad W520 (i7-2760QM Quad Core + NVIDIA Quadro), equipped with 170 W power adapter. I need to buy the docking station, and because I'm on a budget, I'm looking for the used ones. I have found few, but all of them are marked as 20V, 4.5A DC - it seems like they were designed for 90W power adapter equipped models (they seems to be the 4338-10 apparently, and as far as I know, I need the 4338-30). All the photos from sellers' offers show me that the yellow power socket will not accept my power adapter plug. The adapter plug has two "ears" - small "bars" inside the yellow plastic insulation of the plug, but the docking station power socket does not have the grooves, it is just round. My question is - can I still safely use the docking station after modification of the yellow power socket to be able to handle my power adapter plug? I was thinking about using some small file to make the grooves by myself. But the question is whether the internal components of the docking station will handle the significantly higher current load?Is there a chance that these two versions of 4338 model (10 and 30) have the same internal components and are just equipped with different yellow power socket?

Answer:Will 90 W Series 3 Docking Station handle the 170 W load of ThinkPad W520?

Officially, no.Unofficially, break off the extra plastic bits on the barrel, and it will work fine.

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad P50 with ThinkPad Workstation Dock. It is now paired with a old monitor and I wan't to invest in a good monitor.  I use it for different task at work, including regular office (word, excel ...), web browsing, digital drawing, photo editing, video editing (both HD and  4K 3840 x 2160) and viewing VR models in Sketchfab.  I'm looking at ThinkVision monitors and I wonder if whether HD, UHD or 4K is the right choice, I would be happy to get recommendations? Is it capable of 4K? If I buy two monitors, do they have to be similar regarding definition and aspect ratio? Specifications:Lenovo Thinkpad P50 Windows 10Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E3-1505M v5 @ 2.80GHz32GB RAM64-bitIntel(R) HD Graphics P530 Regards,Ron

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad P50 - recommendation for monitor (docking station with monitors)

There is no right choice for everyone.  I will say that right now, I am using a ThinkVision X1 (4k) and it looks really good to me.  I really like the sharp text.  The speakers aren't great, which is common for thin monitors.  The viewing angles are good.  I removed the stand and am using a VESA-mounted stand, which I like.

I have recently purchased the 433835U Docking Station and have the same issue in which when I have my W520 docked, NONE of the USB ports work at all. In Device Manager, I have an Unknown Device with the Hardware Ids of: USB\VID_17EF&PID_100A&REV_0000 and USB\VID_17EF&PID_100A. Yesterday I had a technician come on-site and replace the motherboard on my W520 and I am having the same results. I am also the owner of a Lenovo T410s and when using the same 433835U Dock, all of the USB ports work as expected, so it can not be a problem with the docking station. I have called Lenovo Technical Support for the past two days and was told that there could be a compatibility issue with the W520 and this dock and I can not find the proper driver for the Unknown Device Hardware Ids listed above. Do the USB port on this 433835U Docking Station work at all for anyone else with a W520? Can anyone provide and insight as to resolve this Unknown Device issue?  I am thinking about purchasing the 433830U Docking Station to see if it might work. Thanks much in advance

Answer:Thinkpad T440s internal battery won't charge beyond 80% and external battery won't charge at all

Hi Nicktr,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

I think the problem you are running into is Power Manager conflicting with the 80% BIOS threshold. So to avoid this, either keeps the Power Manager threshold for both batteries below 80%, or else both batteries above 80%.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,
Hemanth Kumar

I have a new T440S with the Intel HD 4400 graphics card connected to two ThinkVision LT2252P monitors with a new Thinkpad Pro Docking Station.  One monitor is connected via DVI the other is VGA.  I have already replaced the docking station once thinking that is the problem. The monitors will black out a dozen times per day.  I have replaced the docking station and verified that I have the latest drivers per the Lenovo site.  The Intel Video driver installed is 9.18.10.3272.  This is the most current per Lenovo.  There are newer drivers on the Intel site but when I try to load them the message tells me that I have the latest driver. Can anyone tell me why?  This appears to be a problem others are experiencing.

Hello I've got some issues with the network connection when leaving the notebook unattended, while it's still in the docking station. The Thinkpad is a T400s (2815-A32). The docking station is a "Series 3 Mini Dock Plus" with the 90 watt power supply. When the notebook is left unattended while still in the docking station, then after some time (5, maybe 10 minutes) the network connection (lan) gets disabled and thus any ongoing traffic gets interrupted. (Using the lan connector on the docking.)However, if I leave the notebook while it's not in the docking station, the network connection (again lan) doesn't get disabled. In that case everything works fine and all downloads continue as they should. (Using the lan connector directly on the notebook.) I haven't been able to figure out what causes that behaviour. The same energy profiles are set in the energy manager which are basically no energy saving at all (no stopping harddisk, no standby and especially no suspending to disk). And the "Allowing disabling of hardware for energy saving purposes" for the network adapter is disabled in the hardware settings, too. But for some reason the lan port at the docking gets disabled (which I assume is for energy saving purposes). Is there some option I've overlooked in the energy manager to change this? Best Regards,Moskito

Answer:T400s: Interruption of Network Connection while unattended Thinkpad is in Docking Station

hey Moskito, could you uninstall the Power Manager software and see if it happens again ?also, i suggest going to http://support.lenovo.com and check that your bios, network card driver and the rest of your system is updated.

Hi I have a ThinkPad X1 Carbon (Type 20A7, 20A8), the laptop is promoted on a 80% charge in 30 min or less. As you can see the attached picture, this is clearly false. I feel that I am getting ripped off and was lied to when I bought the laptop.  Lenovo- please comment, is your advertising not true or do I need to take my laptop into the shop, wait days or even weeks so that you can fix it? best       I

Answer:Thinkpad x1 carbon Battery taking more then 2 hours to charge!!! Rapid charge is not ture!

sounds like somethings wrong, since my x1 carbon is charing up to 80% in less than 1 hour so no it isnt false advertising. Also it says it charges 80% in less than 1 hour so idk where you read it said 30 mins or less, since it never said such thing it allways said 1 hour or less.

I am running a IBM Thinkpad W540 with a Lenovo Ultra Dock Docking Station 170 (Model 40A20170US). I have 3 Asus 23.6" LED HD Monitors (Model VN247HP). These monitors have a standard VGA connection and 2 HDMI ports, By default you are provided a VGA cable and a HDMI-DVI cable. When I plug these monitors into the Ultra Dock no signal is found(including the VGA).When I plug into the direct VGA port on the laptop, the monitor gets signal. If I use a Mini-DP connection with a Mini-DP-DVI adapter I get signal just fine. If I plug my this monitor into my desktop under HDMI and DVI connections it works just fine.I have gone into the bios and confirmed that under display the "Video Mode on Dock" is set to Advanced(I tried standard and it did not work any better).  I have the latest video drivers for the Intel HD graphics driver (10.18.10.3412) and the NVIDIA Quadro K1100M (9.18.13.4052). I am really sorry you are experiencing such issues. What makes me really mad is the fact, according to your words, that Lenovo support is directing you to this forum for help? This forum works on volunteer basis, so you might have a luck or not. I mean, you are living in the USA which is the most important market for Lenovo so if I would you, I would escallate the support issue.Meanwhile, there are two options you might try out:You could check if the firmware utility driver update helps, http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/pd028011or you might try out your luck with the native nVidia drivers, see http://us.download.nvidia.com/Windows/Quadro_Certified/334.95/334.95-quadro-notebook-win8-win7-64bit... . I have an issue that is plaguing my ThinkPad X230 Tablet. I cannot afford to be without it for a week to send it into the depot and am not sure they will be able to replicate the issue even if I do. Two things are happening. Tablet is placed in the docking station. If I turn it on, it will lock up at the ThinkPad screen and never fully load Windows (Win 7 64-bit). If I take it out of the docking station, hard crash it, and then restart, it will start right up. I then wait for the Windows home screen and place back in the docking station. When I do this, TSM Resident immediately quits. I installed Ubuntu on an mSATA card in my T520, which is on the 4338-35U docking station connecting 2 external monitors via digital video cables. This dual-display works nicely for Windows 10. The only troule is, with this configuration, the power-on ThinkPad logo (where I can press the F12 key to select boot device) doesn't show on neither monitor and doesn't respond to my pressing on the F12 key. The Device Manager shows all drivers are installed. When power-on off the docking station, I can use the F12 key select boot device to go for either Windows 10 or Ubuntu (Linux). I need advice on how to get the boot device selection screen to show up when the laptop sits on the docking staion.

Does the Thinkpad P51s support the Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock? I have the Thinkpad P51s with stock Windows 10 Pro and updated to latest drivers and Windows version and installed the latest Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock drivers. Attaching the Thunderbolt 3 Dock to the P51s as described in documentation, it charges the notebook, however, noting attached to the dock is recognized. I've tested with attaching USB flash drives, headphones, Ethernet, HDMI, and DP, but nothing is recognized nor are any warnings/errors displayed in Windows. While the Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock is listed as being compatible with the P51s and T570, the notebook order page does not list the Thunderbolt 3 Dock in any of the accessories lists. Lenovo Sales also confirmed that the Thunderbolt 3 Dock is fully compatible with the P51s.  However, I needed to purchase the Thunderbolt 3 Dock separately from the notebook order. What's going on? Has anybody successfully used the P51s or the T570 with the Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock? Or is this something I need to wait for full support via a future BIOS/driver update? Or perhaps my Thunderbolt 3 Dock is defective? Thanks,Boris

I'm looking for a dock that will reliably work with my laptop and support at least two 1080p monitors (any combination of VGA/HDMI ports). I have read about many of them working unreliably so I'm asking if anyone has a personal experience of a good one.
My PC is HP Spectre x360 Convertible 13-ac0XX and it seems that currently the best one to suit my needs is the Plugable UD-ULTCDL. If anyone has a success story with it, please share :)
P.S. has anyone used HP Travel Dock for USB-C Laptops ?

I bought a Thinlpad R51 - 1836 BBU used and with no battery. I bought a new battery, installed it and the battery drained completely. I sent it back and got a new one and also bought a new power chord. The battery and new power chord worked fine for two months. Last week the battery drained completely again (while plugged into AC chord).

Again I bought a new battery (extended life this time) and bought a docking station. I am now faced with the new battery drains everytime I use it. The power chord does not charge it. The docking station does not charge it either. I would like some questons answered:

Is it normal for the pc to have to be ON for the battery to be charged?

Does anyone know if there is any indication that the power chord is plugged in while the battery is installed? When on AC only, it shows plug - When battery installed (on battery only or with AC chord) computer shows on battery power.

Do the external battery charger units really work? this may be my only way of recharging my battery if not through the pc.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hopefully someone here can help me before I get an aneurysm. I got the HP Thunderbolt 3 Docking Station (150 watts, model number P5Q54AA). Everything is connected ok but as soon as the dock connects to my laptop it crashes my computer instantly and generates the blue screen of death. It doesn't matter if a monitor is connected or not. There was a couple of scary moments when it sent my fans into overdrive and started beeping loudly as if a bomb was ready to explode. I spent more than eight hours on this yesterday and at this point the dock seems like nothing more than a nice looking brick. I have went through all of the help threads here and tried everything. I updated the bios from 1.14 to 1.15I updated all audio drivers, graphic drivers, firmware drivers, chipset drivers, and thunderbolt related driversI rolled back everything twice and reinstalled everythingI removed the security setting in the bios that relates to thunderbolt devices connectingI've made numerous other changes that didn't work and had to roll backNothing seems to work. I am puzzled as to why HP haven't set this up better. Surely there needs to be a dedicated app for this that handles everything and installs and removes all necessary drivers. By the looks of it this docking station has been a mess from the start. What else can I do at this point?

Answer:Thunderbolt 3 Docking Station Crashes HP ZBook Studio G3 as...

It is possible you have a defective dock. I have exactly the same setup and went through some difficulties when I first got it but turning off Thunderbolt security made mine work. It is still occasionally finicky coming out of sleep mode or if I disconnect the laptop and use it as a laptop then try to reconnect the dock. Takes a restart or 2 sometimes but mine generally works well.  I would suggest your problems point to a bad piece of hardware.

I have several Dell 5510 Precision series with the Thunderbolt USB-C adaptor. Each 5510 is plugged into a Dell K17A docking station powered by a Dell 130W power supply. When I connect the docking station via its USB-C connection to the 5510 laptop, I get a BIOS warning that it only sees 95W of the 130W. But the battery charges and the laptop runs. I can turn off the power warning in the BIOS (which is current) but I worry about powering the 5510's Nvidia video card and other components if the BIOS is not seeing all 130 watts.
Plugging in the 130W psu supplied with the laptop has no such BIOS error.
Why does the Dell docking station K17A not see the Dell power supply? Is it throttling it?

Answer:Thunderbolt docking station and BIOS power warning

The dock uses some of the AC adapter's capacity to power its own internal electronics.  I'm not clear which dock model the K17A moniker refers to and it doesn't help that you're using Thunderbolt and USB-C interchangeably, but if you're using the TB16 Thunderbolt Dock, that model is sold only with 180W and 240W adapters precisely because of the dock's power requirements, and this page shows that a Precision 5000 Series requires a TB16 powered by a 240W adapter to run properly.  If you're using the WD15 Dock, which is just USB-C and not Thunderbolt, that model is sold with 130W and 180W adapters, and again the Precision 5000 Series requires the higher 180W adapter, according to this page.

Hi All, I have a Thinkpad T520. It won't charge the battery (% charged stays at the same level) and it won't run from the battery only. If I turn off/remove AC power the computer dies immediately and it won't start up without the AC power plugged in. The battery is definitely good, it works in another computer. Is this a problem which I can fix myself? Can it be repaired? Will it be expensive? Will it require a new motherboard? It is not under warranty. Thanks, so much SV P.S. Any suggestions will need to be written in fairly simple terms, I'm no expert

Answer:Thinkpad T520 won't charge battery or run from battery power.

The problem is the charging circuit on the motherboard. It might be a fuse, but that is soldered to the motherboard, so unless you have a well-equipped repair place with a rework station (not a dealer) they cannot replace the fuse. If it isn't a fuse, it is probably a power transistor, and you are not likely to find someone to fix it. Probably, you will need a motherboard

Can I use on my ultrabook 90w slim battery charge instead of a 65w one?

Solved!

Answer:Thinkpad x1 2gen i7 - battery charge 90w

you can as long as it is from another ThinkPad with a similar plug type (i.e. first generation Thinkpad X1 Carbon), you can also use 135 watts power adapter from the T540p to charge it too. The power adapter will supply only the power needed by the laptop. 90 watts is the maximum power it can supply, but it isn't always supplying that much.

Hi,

I have recently bought a new Thinkpad AC ADAPTER and a new 12 cell battery to my "Thinkpad T60 1953" notebook.

After i received them I pluged both new devices into the notebook but battery cant get charged!!...

Whenever i plug the new ac adapter to the notebook when is not turned on the lighst start blinking like: 1. orange battery and green litle plug lights appear, after a second shuts and apear green batery and green litle plug and after a second just apears the litle green plug lightened, this cycle continues until i take the plug of adapter from the wall socket.

Does a docking station charge a laptop without the docking system itself being plugged in?

Answer:Does a docking station charge a laptop without the docking s...

Hi, What is your laptop ? Does it have docking port and use a PROPER docking station ?  If YES for both then yes, docking station will changer the battery on laptop, Normal USB port replicators (vendors also call them as docking startions) won't charge battery on laptop. Regards.

Hello, I'm new here. My laptop don't charge battery when the external battery is plug in. I saw many posts about thatIs this my battery or can i resolve it with drivers or software ?

Hello all, Please forgive if this has been posted. I couldn't find an answer: I purchased a replacement for my battery, but on installation it wouldn't charge. I tried disabling AC and battery in device manager. I tried complete shut down and reboot. Couldn't get the new battery to be recognized. The old battery still works a bit, so I'm not in serious trouble. but with the battery going on a few years old, I wanted to replace before it left me stranded. Is there something that must be done to tell the system (Win 8.1 x 64 pro) to recognize that the battery is new, and to reflash the battery firmware and reset the driver? Simply replacing the battery didn't quite get the job done. Thank you for any response.

I recently bought a Lenovo ThinkPad T430s 2356-LRG and was wondering how the charge technology worked. I have searched around and looked in the manual but I couldn't find a good answer. My questions is that I use the notebook alot on AC power. And often for extended periods of mid to heavy load. I run Linux and have setup ChargeThreshold. It stops charge at 95% and begins again at 45%.But when I keep the AC power on, and if the battery has 80% it does not move up or down as expected. Because it must drop lower than 45%.Will the power then go straight to the machine and bypass the battery? Because the Battery-LED on the back is turned off. Or will it go via the battery and produce charge cycles on the battery? So let's say the battery is bypassed will it then be fine to keep it on AC and active for a period of many days with heavy load but monitor the temp of the battery. I know heat kills it.I could also buy an 95W power adapter and remove the battery completely from the machine when I have it at my desk for an extended period of time.

Answer:How does battery charge work ThinkPad T430s

Hey there MikalD and welcome to the forums!

What you are experiencing is as per normal. These charge thresholds are determined in your power manager, there is a nifty Knowledgebase Article about this.

First, open up the ThinkVantage Power Manager. Click on the battery tab, and then Battery Maintenance. This will open a window where you will be able to change and set your charging thresholds to your desired preferences.

Additionally, here are links that can give some insight and advice of how to increase the longevity of battery life. How Can I Increase Battery Life?
How To Maximize Battery Life

I hope this information assists you.

I have a Thinkpad T61p, puchased thru college program July/Aug 2007 - running Vista Home.About month after I had it, the battery had error and had icon of failing to charge.I received replacement battery at that time. Now Dec 2008, the battery again is failing to charge -- Is there a manufacturing problem with the batteries, and of course I am beyond the one-year warrenty on the battery - so now I have to pay for a new one - I guess Am I doing something wrong that is causing the battery to get into this situation or is there a flaw in these bateries ? thxChris

Answer:Thinkpad T61p Battery failing to charge

I work in IT for a company that purchases many thinkpads.  I've seen too many batteries fail from the T61 series but haven't seen Lenovo come out with a statement about it yet.

I bought a Lenovo ThinkPad W510 (4318-CTO) in August of 2010, and about a year and a month later (a month out of warrantee), it decides to go all shades of crazy on me. I first noticed a strange hot-plasticky smell; maybe slightly metallic like something had shorted out. Upon further investigation, I noticed the charger cord, close to the male part that's plugged into the back of the laptop, had frayed and was showing wire (due to being bent in travel, I suppose?! No idea). I assume it sparked, surged, or something awful to that extent, so I unplugged everything until my new charger arrived. Upon plugging in the new charger, I noticed the battery wouldn't accept a charge. I purchased a new battery ($150+ invested into it now), and it still won't charge. I had the charger tested by a local electrician and it was pushing the required amount of power for the unit. Now I'm stuck, I don't know where to go from here. Is there something internal that can be replaced to facilitate it receiving power again? I paid far too much for this laptop for it to be dead only a year in.

I bought an E540 Edge two and a half months ago, and have had batter charge issues continually. The battery starts out fine/operating normally. Then, when the charge gets fairly low (around 20%) the low battery alert goes off, I plug it in, and all of a suddent it's at 6% charged. Over time, the threshold for the sudden drop in charge creeps upward. Now, when it goes below 50%, it drops down to the 6%. I contacted Lenovo about this last month, and they sent me a new battery, which was great, except the same exact negative progression creeped in and escalated again over these past few weeks. Any thoughts/help from Lenovo or others would be extremely appreciated. Is this machine systematically destroying batteries? Or is it simply a problem with the battery gauge? Or something else entirely? It's a great machine otherwise, but this one issue is incredibly burdensome.

I have recently purchased an S1, which is now having an issue that I can't seem to resolve on my own. The laptop works (almost) perfectly on A/C, but doesn't charge the battery. I noticed yesterday the battery was low (which was surprising, because I had only recently unplugged it) - so I plugged it in to charge. At which point, the battery icon in the system tray stated "8% (plugged in, not charging).I've tried the following to fix this: 1) Leaving it plugged in overnight completely off. 2) Running the battery calibration (fails w/ unexpected error). 3) Tried turning off battery optimization (Option is removed in newer version of drivers, so NA to my issue). 4) Tried reinstalling the power management drivers anyway (even though I already had the newer version). 5) Holding down the power button for 30 seconds, both plugged in and not plugged in (suggestion from forum). 6) Holding down the reset button (pin reset on the mobo) for 30 seconds, both plugged in and not plugged in. 7) Charging from BIOS. 8) Letting the battery run down to 0% in BIOS, then rebooting on A/C (another forum suggestion).  Now I'm just at 0% plugged in and not charging. Previously I said the computer almost worked perfectly, the almost is that the CPU is stuck at ~800mhz, even with all power management turned off (including Speedstep in BIOS) and the power profile set to high performance. Can anyone think of anything else I can try before I give up an... Answer:Thinkpad Yoga S1 Runs off AC but won't charge the battery

CPU getting stuck at 800MHz is a shared symptom with not having the battery attached on AC.Might be the relevant circuitry on the motherboard/battery. Could try either testing the battery in a different machine or a different battery in the same machine.

I've got a Thinkpad 600E running WindowsXP, which has performed pretty well, although the original battery (understandably) just refuses to hold a charge very long any more - although it will reliably recharge when the laptop is running on A/C.

I decided to invest in a new (genuine) IBM replacement laptop battery, which upon receipt, just wouldn't seem to go into the recharge cycle. The recharge light (lower left screen hinge) only blinks orange. Assuming "defective battery", I requested and received a return merchandise authorization, and returned the battery and requested a replacement. The replacement arrived, and the same problem.

Although not outside the realm of reasonableness, it seems improbably that two consecutive replacement laptop batteries would be defective. Under power options, the replacement battery appears to be being recognized - although just not charging (graphic shows a "circle and bar" running through the battery image).

So, clearly (at least to me),

There's nothing wrong with my A/C adapter
There's nothing wrong with my existing (old) battery
There's nothing wrong with the battery charging circuitry

Again, this is a genuine IBM laptop battery, with the exact same model as the old one and it seems to defy reason that this battery also has some sort of defect. Any suggestions on a way to "kick-start" the new battery into recharging?

My T450 has an issue with the battery sometimes charges 100% but sometimes only 60% I already recalibrated twice but always got the same result if charge 100% only get 2 hours of charge. The battery has an internal and a extra battery that suppously gives me 8 hours in full charge. Is this an issue with the driver o with the battery? Thanks for the help.

To anyone, I have a new Thinkpad Pro Dock and a T440S. Connected an external Viewsonic monitor with a DVI cable to to dockstation. When I close the lid to the laptop the external monitor would only give me the resolution 640x480, on the forum I found that there was a firmware. I upgraded the firmware. Shutdown the laptop unplug the AC adapter and plugged everything back in. Now when I boot up the external monitor says out of range and black and the laptop screen is black and can't see anything.  If I unplug the laptop from the dock the laptop monitor screen comes back. How do I fix this problem. I only have a DVI cable. I have Windows 7 64bit Pro. The firmware was gid638ww.exe

Answer:Thinkpad Pro Docking station connected to external monitor out of Range on monitor

Hi Ipodtrip,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

Check uninstalling the graphic driver from the system, and use thinkvantage system update utility to update the drivers. Because this utility will search for exact drivers for your system.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,

I have just bought a Dell XPS 15 (9560) and a Dell WD15 docking station with 130W power brick (same wattage as the laptop's AC-adapter). When I only use the docking station to power the laptop the discrete graphics card (GTX 1050) does not seem to work. When I am in a game (eg. Starcraft 2), I get like 15 fps with the NVIDIA recommended settings. Then when I plug in the laptops's own power brick (while still in the game) I get an immediate four-fold increase in framerate. When I unplug the laptop's own power brick the framerate drops down to 15 fps again in a heartbeat. Furthermore, when I only power the laptop through the docking station, I cannot even find the discrete GPU in the list when I'm trying to run the Geekbench 4 compute benchmark (OpenCL). Only the integrated graphics shows up. When I plug in laptop's power brick I find GTX 1050 in the list.
I have run the Dell Command Update application and all my drivers and firmware are up to date.
Does anyone have any idea to what the problem could be?
