KTS 2017 is there any benifit of using AppGuard?

Question: KTS 2017 is there any benifit of using AppGuard?

Hi all,

having Kasperky in place and application control configured so that just special applications are allowed to access my private files (docs, pictures, ...) I am asking my self if there will be a benifit of playing with AppGuard.
I know that there are people here on MT that are big fans of AppGuard, so here is my question:

What can I do with AppGuard that I can't archive using Application Control from KTS?

Thanks and cheers

Preferred Solution: KTS 2017 is there any benifit of using AppGuard?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi everyone, i have quite a few questions so i'll post separate threads rather than pollute one thread. I'm wanting to get something a lot better than windows defender. Comcast is my ISP so i can get NIS for free. As most of you are aware of Norton hasn't been doing a great job these days. There has been multiple vulnerabilities in its products that actually decreases the security of windows. Still NIS still does a pretty good job of scoring pretty well in the various test in terms of protection. I was thinking on going with either bitdefender or KIS but of course i would have to pay for those. If you were me would opt for NIS because its still pretty dang good and worlds better than bit defender or would you opt for one of the better products like KIS or bitdefender?

Have old laptop
Computer currently has 3gb ram and 32bit W7 pro
Thinking about about putting 64bit and 4gb ram
Is it worth it? How do I know if my computer can handle 64bit?
Specs:Product Specifications Compaq Presario CQ50-139NR Notebook PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English)
It says max memory is 3gb, but crucial ram says 4gb is the max? Which is right?

Answer:Would I benifit in going from 3gb to 4gb ram?

If Compaq says that the max is 3Gb, I'd go with what they say since it's their product.
Unless you're using programs that will benefit from a 64 bit OS, you might as well stay with 32 bit.

Hello,
I am wanting to set up a web and ftp server on my network.
I guess I should have done my research a little better but I went ahead and got a static ip from my ISP for my router. Everything I read now suggests that I need to set up static ip's on the servers and computers and then port forward from the router. So I guess my question: is there any advanrage to having a external static ip. If there is some benifit that can be derived from it I will keep it, otherwise I cannot see paying the extra monthly charge.

I have ADSL modem which is also router router that is connected to WAN of a router.

what is better of the two options:

1-Use the modem in router mode:

modem WAN: from ISP (enter ADSL usernamer and password)
modem LAN 192.168.1.1

router WAN (static IP): 192.168.1.2
router LAN: 192.168.2.1

2- Use the modem in bridge mode

router WAN (PPoE client): from ISP (enter ADSL username and password)
router LAN: 192.168.2.1

which of the two method is better and make internet faster?

Note:
I am now using the first method because if the router is damaged. I can connect to the modem directly and use the internet until I buy a new router but in the second method, I need to change the modem back to router mode and then back to bridge mode when I buy the new router.

Answer:what is the benifit of adsl bridge mode?

Bridge mode is used to connect 2 different networks
on different subnets together.
If you are not trying to bridge 2 networks together,
just use router mode.

My supervisor has asked me to pull together the numbers that would be involved in upgrading the machines on one of our subnets from 2 to 4 gigabytes of RAM. I have determined a cost estimate and time frame, but he also asked me to provide some kind of metric for the increase in performance we might expect from the RAM. Something simple that will make sense to management, like "computer responsiveness will increase by 45%"

Have any of you ever been asked to provide information like this? Can you offer any advice for coming up with a general, meaningful metric?

Thanks!

Answer:Solved: How to Quantify Benifit of Added RAM

I have been asked to do this before by some upper management in my corporation and I had to present it to the CFO and a few other financial employees to justify the costs. I specifically had to explain the benefits of upgrading our basic Optiplex 790 and Latitude E6420 to 8 gigs of RAM instead of 4 for a total of about 100 machines that were being used in one of our departments that runs more intensive software.

Overall in all honesty the speed of the computer and performance will not greatly increase. I found that with RAM upgrades the longevity of the computers use increases due to the demand of future software upgrades memory usage. I would explain to them that a 2 gig to 4 gig increase in RAM would help the speed approximately 15-20% but up to 30% or 40% depending on the age of the machine and the amount of old software they have on the machine. From the sound of it these are older machines and with my experience RAM upgrades tend to have more of an impact.

Overall I would explain that due to the age of the machines a RAM upgrade would increase the remaining life of the machines and also increase performance depending on the specific machine and what software it has installed on it.

Is anyone else tired of the OS grouping all similar programs together on the bottom panel when they are minimized? I really miss how it was in XP when I could decide where all my icons were on the bottom panel regardless of whether they were seperate instances of the same program or not. This made it really fast and easy to switch between windows. Like for instance if I have several pdfs open and I want to quickly interchange between them it was super fast to just remember where they were on the bottom panel and click on the one I want to look at. Now with Windows 7 I have to click on or move my mouse over one pdf icon and then it brings up a fancy "mini-window" that shows all the pdfs I have open. Then I have to figure out where they are all the time (I rarely remember). Its frustrating to me enough that I felt the need to complain about it lol, so I was wondering if anyone else shares any of the same sentiments or knows of a solution aside from just dealing with it .

Am I really the only one who is having problems adjusting to this?? Is there a way to disable this feature, and simplify it back to the way it was in XP?

Answer:A feature I think is more nuisance than benifit. Anyone agree?

I can't find it right now, but it's definitely an option and I have it set the way you desire. I have about thirty windows open as we speak, many for the same software as well as for PDFs, and I'm seeing separate icons at the bottom of the screen.

Good evening everyone. Thanks for your access to this thread. I hope you to read and answer for this question.

I want to ask everyone that which software should I use for keeping security of my PC.

Now I am using Bitdefender Total Security 2017 as main anti-malware soft on my main desktop PC.
And also I was using F-secure SAFE as anti-malware soft on my PC until last week.

Yesterday, I heard that new Avast Antivirus 2017 was released, and new Avast Free is including behaviour scanning system.

I am having trouble deciding which software should I use as anti-malware soft.
Please tell me about your recommend.

I think that...

?Protection features
Better : Bitdefender 2017 > F-secure SAFE > Avast Free 2017

?Performance and speed
Lighter : Avast Free 2017 > F-secure SAFE > Bitdefender 2017

?the risk of false positive trouble
Bigger risk : F-secure SAFE > Avast Free 2017 > Bitdefender 2017

?SSL (HTTPS) Scanning is enable without fake SSL certificate to browser
Unnecessary fake certificate : Avast Free, F-secure
Need fake certificate : Bitdefender Total

F-secure SAFE is the very nice solution as protection from malwares and keeping speedy PC. But it is having big risk of false positive ratings; especially the website blocking is not good with many many false positive ratings. And, sometimes slow down my PC.

Bitdefender Total Security 2017 is the best solution as protection from malwares. This software is providing users very nice anti-malware solu... Read more

Answer:Avast Free 2017 vs F-secure SAFE vs Bitdefender Total Security 2017

Quick question, why Bitdefender Total Protection? Do you need ALL those additional features, or looking for an Antivirus only, because there are Bitdefender Antivirus Plus and Free versions.

What about other protection software like Emsisoft Anti-Malware/Internet Security or ESET Nod32 Antivirus/Internet Security?

A couple of years ago I moved myself and some of the fam from Apple Everything to Windows 10. Yesterday however, I bought an new 2017 iPad. I really love the Surface devices, so why?
LEAVING THE PLATFORM BECAUSE OF WINDOWS MOBILE
First, because Microsoft are no longer supporting the phones that are in our house, we are being forced from that platform. So rather than living and breathing completely and happily inside the Microsoft ecosystem, I am now forced to diversify and go elsewhere. This really is a big deal, and changes my thinking from the unthinkable (leaving the MS ecosystem) to the possible (shifting back towards Apple). That being the case, why should I then buy a Microsoft Surface tablet (I was planning to buying a new Surface Pro M3) when I an now FORCED to be open to Apple and Android?
EASE OF MOVING PLATFORMS
Second, Microsoft have made my leap back to Apple so easy, because they have done what Apple and Google have refused to do, which is to make their software available on the others' platforms. Thus the transition to iPad is easy. For example, Word and PowerPoint are effectively free (via my 365 account that I will not be renewing at full cost next time; I will use the academic version which costs me almost nothing). Outlook on iPad is a great app (better than on PC platform). Lots of other apps that Microsoft that I use are also really nice on iPad (e.g. Wunderlist) and made the transition really simple and clean.

Answer:I did the unthinkable and chose a 2017 iPad over a 2017 Surface Pro M3

Can't make sense of that. Presumably you have really old windows phones that no longer get updates?
And what does that have to do with what tablet you use? Windows has timeline, cloud clipboard and a whole host of platform agnostic features coming this fall, so Windows will play nice with android or ios (better than those OSes play with any other).
You don't even need your tablet, desktop and phone to be the same platform. You just need the same services, which for MSFT, exist on every platform.

Question: AppGuard + ERP

@Umbra says that AppGuard + ERP is the best combo. I have also seen others who promote that combo. Why is that?
I have AppGuard. But I've been thinking on installing ERP. As I have noticed, ERP seems redundant. So, what are the benefits of ERP over AppGuard? What is lacking in AppGuard that ERP complements? When is ERP needed?

Answer:AppGuard + ERP

Appguard only "weakness" is when you shift to install mode, a malware residing in your system could take advantage of it. So we use ERP to backup AG in that specific situation.

AG + ERP combo is mostly used when you don't want install classic realtime AVs.

It provides great lock-down security in Lock-Down Mode - with a little less at Protected Mode.

There are quite a few of us trying to get BRN to make some needed changes... but that remains to be seen.

Once you configure everything to get it all to work together - you won't mess with AppGuard very often.

Question: Appguard Review

Blue Ridge Networks AppGuard Review

Anti-Virus products have been a staple in computer security for a while. While they still have their place on todays PC?s it?s been proven time and time again that their reactive nature and the fact they rely heavily on signature database updates can leave computer users exposed to newer threats until the vendors catch up. With thousands of new variations of malware being released daily, it is virtually impossible for them to keep us protected from the newest ones all the time. HIPs (Host Intrusion Prevention) have become commonplace alongside Anti-Virus software and even combined with firewalls but in order to get the maximum protection from these the user must be relied upon to answer prompts. Just like Windows UAC, many users will eventually not even bother reading these prompts and will simply start allowing everything nullifying any potential benefits. To top it all off, every layer that gets added for protection results in a slightly heavier, more resource hungry suite. As such it can be difficult to find security software that is both effective and light. This is where a program created by Blue Ridge Networks comes in. This piece of software is called AppGuard and in an online world where many programs ?claim? to be innovative, this one earns it place as the most innovative that I have seen in a long while. How it works can take some time to understand and it?s easy to get confused or mixed up when first trying. I?ll try... Read more

Answer:Appguard Review

Tried it out alongside ReHIPS and it was very light. After about ten or so minutes to figure out which programs to set as guarded, I had no problems whatsoever.

Insignificant mistake I made was downloading 4.4.1.6 which had a 30 day evaluation period. Still, pretty solid. Plan on using it till it runs out to tinker further. Thanks to @Umbra & @Lockdown for help with proper configuration.

Anyone care to comment on the likelihood of AppGuard/BlueRidgeNetworks having too close of a relationship with Big Brother? They are located in Chantilly, VA after all, and received multiple awards from Homeland Security. Look at their Directors and Senior Advisors. Kinda gives me the creeps thinking about giving them kernel level access to all my data...

Answer:AppGuard and Big Brother?

If you use the internet, you're willingly giving away your data. If you don't want to give away your data, don't use the internet. You can speculate all day about whether or not a security product is, or isn't tied to some intelligence agency. The point is that the product does precisely what it's marketed to do -- prevent unwanted malware, ransomware, etc, from infiltrating your PC. Take your pick -- a chance that intel has backdoored a security product (in which case, nothing changes), or not use the product, and have your life stolen by blackhats.

Yes, version 4.4.6.1 is safe to use.

Different vendors offer different types of lifetime licenses. BRN, like the vast majority of other vendors, offered version lifetime licenses which was and still is standard industry practice. There is nothing fake nor disingenuous about version lifetime licenses.

Well, I purchased appguard on 03/31/2017, and because I am a windows insider, I wiped and reinstalled Win 10 windows insider edition. Now I can't get appguard to install and activate.

So I am warning anyone to not purchase it if they need to reinstall OS, or change machines, I have attempted to contact support with no avail. I have had to contact my bank and issue a chargeback for "an unknown charge" to recover the money on the licence.

For software that is supposed to be one of the best, they have the worst licensing procedures.

In the meantime does anyone have a good alternative for a computer "Lock" I have Kapersky TS in super lockdown mode, but I don't want to run my system online without proper protection due to all the govt malware, ransomware etc.

The best thing to do with AppGuard is not to get too obsessive-compulsive about it blocking something and then logging it.

If nothing gets broken then simply ignore it. If something does get broken then you can create an exception by adding the blocked app to the Guarded Applications or creating an exception folder or adding the app to the Power Applications list. Which one you will need varies based upon what is being blocked.

It will be all right. If Chrome is still updating and working without issue, then just go about your computing activities.

AppGuard Technology is client security software that blocks malware attacks, preventing harm when end
users:
? Browse Hacked/Malicious Websites
? Open Malicious Email Attachments
? Insert Infected USB Drives
? Open Tainted Documents (pdf, xls, doc, etc.)
? Played Spiked Multimedia Files (jpg, avi, wmv, etc.)
? Run UnPatched Software

AppGuard Technology employs a different approach from that of legacy defenses, which rely on signatures to identify incoming malware. In principle, this signaturebased approach does not trust the practically infinite variety of files and communications of a computer. AppGuard Technology, on the other hand, does not trust the applications that process these files and communications. It blocks write operations by these applications to system and application resources as wells as prevents unknown applications from launching from user-space or USB drives. Further, AppGuard Technology differs from other technologies that counter zero-day malware attacks, which rely on heuristics, protocol filtering, and extensive rule-sets. Instead, users merely need to identify any applications by name that are not already guarded by default. Careful attention has been devoted to striking a balance between usability and securityClick to expand...

I would be really interested in your experience with AppGuard in an enterprise environment (AD, 100+ minimum workstations, 100+ minimum users). If any of them involves disclosing sensitive information, please tag the question as confidential.
How busy the IT department is when AppGuard is involved (maintenance)?
What is your incident response plan/procedure for AppGuard?
How did the implementation/deployments go? (including hardware/software prerequisites)
How many points of failure your AppGuard implementation has?
How efficient the update/upgrade process is?
How often did you need to restart your endpoints because of AppGuard (if at all)?
How is the support (if you had any opened tickets at all)?
Are the reporting features of AppGuard good enough for your needs?
What compromises (if any) you had to make while using AppGuard?

Please respond only if you have constant contact with the product in the enterprise environment described above.

Many thanks for your feedback!

Hi

I'm trying to move away from using installed applications and replacing them with portable ones wherever available. This is to avoid installation/uninstallation and the need to clean the system of remnants like registry keys, files, folders etc which I find a hassle to do so. I can accept them to perform a bit slower than installed applications.

With portable software all I need is to unzip to a folder and ran the exe file inside will do. I just need to delete the whole folder if I don't need the software without touching the system.

The question is if I place the entire folder of such applications into C:\Users\myname will they still get protected by AppGuard? If no, then what must I do to get them protected?

Thanks

Don't put them on C: , choose another partition (if you have). Imagine if on C and you need format C...bye bye portable apps...

They will be considered as "User Space" and blocked from execution unless added to Guarded Apps or added in User-Space with "NO"

Note that current version of AG has a bug with apps located in a non-system partition, some apps can't be added to Guarded Apps.

Hi guys,

New to AppGuard, still learning the ropes.
When i restart my PC, just wondering why AppGuard keeps reverting back to "Allow Installs", even though I keep it on "Protected"(green) before I shutdown/restart, so far the only workaround for this is to set "Suspension Timeout" to 1 minute and it'll revert back to normal, seems a bit insecure since malware would load before AG has a chance to change back to "Protected"

Also the "slider" mechanism seems buggy too, i slide to "Allow Installs" then uncheck "Automatically resume protected level after xx", it goes to "Protected" for about 2 seconds, then bugs out back to "Allow Installs" 2 seconds after that.
using verion 5.2.9.1, Windows 10

Answer:Appguard keeps reverting to Allow Install

It might be a bug for v. 5.2.9.1. What you are describing appears to me to be a bug.

I can't help you buddy... I am a BRN beta tester - so I have what is now a closed beta version of AppGuard.

I would submit a ticket directly to BRN support.

ESET Smart Security or NOD32 ?

If ESS on 2 different systems or combined with EIS on 1 system ?

Anyhow...

AppGuard protects the physical system should anything "break-out" of the Sandboxie sandbox or - more likely - you make a mistake.

AppGuard in Lock-Down mode is probably as good as can be had from a software restriction policy security soft - unless you use Excubits Bouncer or NoVirusThanks Smart Object Blocker and write all the rules. Writing all the rules is a horrendous task if you don't know what rules you need.

AppGuard is the most user-friendly of the SRP softs, Lock-Down mode SRP is very tight, and at only about 5 MB RAM usage it is difficult to do any better.

Yes. By adding AppGuard your security would be "maxed-out."

Hello,

This is a short review of Blue Ridge Software's AppGuard.

Pros:

Simple installation.
Uses very little system resources (approximately 4 MB RAM).
Unobtrusive.
Effective (extremely).
Block events are recorded in Windows Events Viewer.
Comprehensive help file.
Learning to use and configure can be achieved with moderate effort.
Once completely configured it is essentially "set-it-and-forget-it"; occasional maintenance may be required - dependent upon how extensively new softs are added.
Extremely robust self-protection.
User can create a Trusted Publisher list to allow for softs updates in Medium Mode.
Can run all Windows Command Line utilities... even in "Lock-Down" mode without any settings changes (important only to advanced users).
Cons:

User-interface is out-dated and cumbersome.
Configuration is a manual affair that can make for a "busy" user experience.
Getting some applications to work properly\as-intended while in "Lock-Down" Mode requires advanced configuration.
Cannot add dll that functions as an executable to the "Guard List."
User manual is out-dated in some areas and infos are not always clear.
AppGuard terminology is not intuitive.
Novice will have difficulty making required "Lock-Down" Mode configurations.
Cannot export configuration\settings.
Block notifications consist of flashing tray icon; easily missed.
Configuration changes must be made "as-you-go."
Not really suitable for ... Read more

I have read elsewhere that version 4.4.6.1 was the last version that Blue Ridge would sell with a lifetime license, and starting with v5, would be using a yearly license subscription.

Any chance of releasing 4.4.6.1 as a freeware, like NVT Exe Radar Pro Beta is, with the understanding that there would be no updates, upgrades, or technical support? I would appreciate it, and I am sure others would.

Thanks

Answer:AppGuard v4.4.6.1 - Last Lifetime License Version

That makes no sense from a business point of view because except from the licensing change the 2 versions are identical. So giving away the 4 version for free means they would never get a sale for 5.

Recently I am studying how to simulate the features of AppGuard with some other hips softwares.

Why AppGuard? Because some features of other anti-exe programs, such as command-line whitelist, is too hard for me to simulate.

The fact is that I like AG very much, but I am unable to purchase it owing to some boring cross-border payment issues.

Some features of AG, such as blocking executable files in user space, prevent guarded applications from writing to protected folders and prevent "private" guarded applications from reading the private folders, are not hard to simulate.

The problem is the registry.

We know AG prevents guarded applications from writing to protected registry items/keys/values.

But I do not know the exact registry items/keys/values that are protected by AG.

Only after knowing the items exactly can I write some hips rules to protect them.

So I hope experienced users could explain this to me.

Thank you.

Blue Ridge Networks doesn't provide a list of protected registry keys, but if you submit a request to Barb at BRN she will most likely be of some assistance.

NOTE: Don't submit a request via technical support as you will get no help there; if you do request contact directly with Barb or goto Wilders Security and see if someone has a direct contact method.

Correct. I emailed the sales team and was told the same thing. He said he would let me know when it gets sorted out.Click to expand...

All attempts to purchase AppGuard via methods specified online and in AppGuard installer (e.g., AppGuard | Personal , AppGuard Store ) seem currently futile.

In my so-far-futile attempt to purchase an AppGuard license, I recently:
- filled out all available 'Contact Us' and 'Request Demo' forms on Home
- sent emails to both the COO and President

I had not yet received any response to any of my attempts at communication with AppGuard, so I then called Blue Ridge Sales (800-704-5234; Support | Blue Ridge Networks ), who told me to send an email to [email protected] asking to be added to the email list of people they will notify once the AppGuard Personal purchase issue is resolved.

I emailed [email protected] . They then promptly responded to me, apologized for the inconvenience, and noted that they added me to the notification list.

@Lockdown , do you have any other suggestions?

Answer:How to purchase an AppGuard Personal license?

At the moment there is no way to purchase. I reached out to them last night and received a response. I followed up and received another email earlier today.

Hang tight until it gets sorted. As soon as I hear back I will follow up. Unless of course @Lockdown knows before us. But I am sure he has other priorities so maybe not.

An AppGuard update has been published. You should get see an announcement soon (if AppGuard is configured to check for updates).

The version is 4.3.14.5. This basically fixes the update issues that we had when we rolled out 4.3.13.1.

There are a couple policy changes:
[LocalAppData]\apps\2.0 is excluded from user-space. These are where click-to-run applications are stored.
[LocalAppData]\apps\2.0 has been added as a protected resource.
Schtasks blocking messages are now ignored.

*.cmd files can be added as user-space exceptions.
As many of you reported, when we published AppGuard 4.3.1.13, the auto-update was too silent. It basically resulted in AppGuard being turned off and there was no indication that the installation was successful or complete. The reason was that the install was considered a major upgrade by the OS which turned off our service. Our update logic didn't handle it properly. Though the update was successful, there was no indication it was and AppGuard was turned off. We recalled the update (from the perspective of automatically updating, the release is still good and can be installed - just not through our auto-update feature). Anyway, we think this version will properly alert you that the update occurred and will prompt you to reboot.
A few minor bug fixes:
The GUI was crashing adding c:\windows\assembly as user-space folder (why you would do that, I don't know).
AppGuard was blocking but not reporting a user-space folder that had a wild card i... Read more

I'm wondering if anyone could briefly explain the difference to me between two softwares users on the forums here have recommended me to defend against Ransomware.

One is WinAntiRansom and the other is an an anti-exe type program. I don't really want to use both, but I assume they operate a bit differently? I can't really figure out how WinAntiRansom is different from an anti-exe program though.

I was about to go with NVT ERP (I think its a good balance of usability/security and I like the GUI). But then I remembered I hadn't finished reading about WinAntiRansom... and so now I'm a bit confused again.

User @hjlbx posted this 'classification' schema below on a different post but I'm not 100% solid on the details here if this is correct. Further, I already use HitmanPro.Alert so if W.A.R. is the same mechanism (and indeed they do a comparison against HPA on their site) then maybe they conflict.

Anti-Cryptor (HitmanPro.Alert, CryptoPrevent, WinAntiRansom)
Anti-executable (NoVirusThanks Exe Radar Pro, SecureAPlus, VooDooShield)
Software Restriction Policy (AppGuard)
Virtualization (Shadow Defender, Sandboxie)

Answer:WinAntiRansom vs Anti-Exe Programs (AppGuard, NVT, etc)

I don't pretend to be an expert, so take what I have to say with a grain of salt. There's actually no harm in using an anti-executable AND anti-cryptor at the same time. The problem is when people have like 5, 6, even 7 real-time prots at the same time. If you pick the right software, you can reduce the amount of real-time protections down to like 3 or 4. You really don't even need an AV or Firewall, just a few select on-demand scanners. For instance, WinAntiRansom specifically targets ransomware -- that's its prime objective, and it's very good at it. But the buck really stops there. As such, it may be necessary to have an anti-executable, such as NVT, Voodooshield, Appguard, to prevent the execution of other processes that WinAntiRansom doesn't cover. Those two forms of protection will prevent most RANSOMWARE and MALWARE infections if you PAY ATTENTION AND READ BEFORE CLICKING.

Furthermore, you could logically also add HMPA, which covers most of your other bases: keyloggers, exploits, browser protection, solid real-time malware prot, some forms of ransomware, and more. Theoretically, that's all the protection you would ever need. It's really just a game of experimentation, and finding the right amount of protection that works for your personal needs. Virtualization (Shadow Defender, Sandboxie), IMO, are only necessary if you experiment with malware, visit questionable websites that have a history of infecting your PC with malware, o... Read more

Traditional anti-virus/spyware attempts to identify viruses and other malware based on its digital signature. This approach is rapidly losing its effectiveness. It is getting worse each year because it hopelessly attempts to characterize the things we let into our computers as either good or bad. AppGuard is far more practical. Instead, it blocks harmful actions when these things turn out to be bad.

For example, when Adobe Reader opens a tainted PDF, AppGuard prevents Adobe Reader from being used to work for the cyber criminals. Also, AppGuard either prevents any malicious executables that Adobe Reader downloads from either launching at all or by letting it launch but blocking harmful actions. For other attack vectors, AppGuard restricts what applications, software installations, and scripts may execute, and if they do launch, what they can and cannot do.

Other security products have sought to do the same as AppGuard. However, they lack our patented technology that makes this approach simple and practical for all computer users.

Exceptional Protection - Made to be Simple

Most advanced anti-malware security software for zero-day, re-crafted, and targeted malicious code attacks require their users to become security experts. AppGuard was designed to minimize such dependencies. For example, if something potentially bad should happen, AppGuard does not present a prompt box asking the user if it should be allowed. Only security experts should make such decisions.

CHANTILLY, Va., March 7, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The U.S. Army Network Enterprise Technology Command (NETCOM) has accredited the AppGuard endpoint breach prevention system from Blue Ridge Networks with a Certificate of Networthiness (CoN). The CoN accreditation verifies that AppGuard meets strict Army and Department of Defense (DoD) standards for security, compatibility and sustainability enabling Army IT Professionals to deploy it in their IT infrastructures.

AppGuard offers the marketplace the most effective protection to prevent breaches from undetectable cybersecurity attacks. The escalation of fileless malware, phishing, targeted, and other forms of cyber attacks that can defeat conventional protection methods exposes even the most diligent enterprises to the risk of costly breaches. John Higginbotham, Blue Ridge CEO, commented, "It is costing most organizations a fortune to try to detect the undetectable with little chance of success. AppGuard effectively eliminates persistent endpoint vulnerabilities to deliver reliable, field proven breach prevention at lower costs".Click to expand...

In usually, f-secure is not making something to bad situation for me, I am feeling it.
But the Browsing protection feature of F-secure SAFE blocks websites too many times.
The most of sites, which were blocked by F-secure are obviously safe. Of cause, they are judged safe sites by other major antimalware soft (e.g. Avast, Bitdefender Total Security).

So I want to compare them; Avast Free Antivirus 2017 and F-secure SAFE 2017(or Internet Security 2017).
I want to ask you that which is the more strong software under the below situation...

1.
OS is Windows10 Home and updated with latest security patch.
2.
Main browser is the latest of Mozilla Firefox with ublock origin.
3.
If I use Avast Free 2017, I will configure some setting (e.g. File Shield, Mail Shield, Web Shield, and Behavior Shield) to aggressive security level. For example, I will configure by referring to this page avast! Optimal Protection settings by RejZoR
I heard that the latest edition of Avast Free A... Read more

Hey man. Of the two I would choose Avast, much more reliable and customizable.
My personal choice is Bitdefender though. I believe you could do some research on Youtube so that you form your own opinion. Here are some interesting channels:

CHANTILLY, Va. (April, 2017) ? An investor Group led by ANA Holdings [TYO:9202], Dentsu [TYO:4324] and six other Japanese companies have capitalized Blue Planet-works (formerly KeepTree Japan) to form a new global leader in cyber security. Blue Ridge Networks contributed its AppGuard line of business for cash and significant equity ownership in the company to commence immediate global distribution of breakthrough AppGuard software and services for endpoint protection. Blue Ridge Networks will continue to distribute AppGuard in the US and serve as the Managed Security Services Provider (MSSP) for customer operations through an agreement with Blue Planet-works.

John Higginbotham, Chairman and CEO of Blue Ridge Networks noted ?the experienced leadership and extensive institutional presence in the new company will enable it to quickly build a leading global brand leveraging AppGuard?s breakthrough performance for preventing breaches without a compromise occurring?. Hiroshi Nakata, Chairman and CEO of Blue Planet-works added, ?after careful consideration and comprehensive examination of endpoint security solutions, we have found AppGuard as the most effective scalable security solution to prevent breaches. AppGuard reliably stops malware that is able to evade other security solutions in the marketplace.?

Just threw this article together, I want all the brain's in this forum to chip in and if there is anything missing from this article (at all!) let me know ASAP, in this thread.

Previously we wrote a long post about Best Laptops for Hackers, which included a run-down on the best laptops for programming and penetration testing (pen-testing). This article turned out to be very popular even though it wasn't exactly intended to be that, now we are proud to finally publish the long-requested article of 'Best Laptops for Video Game System Emulation'.

The idea of this post is to give an accurate summary of which laptops are suited for, or adept at emulating various consoles and their games, and which ones also can easily perform these duties, at the lowest possible cost.

Now obviously, the better hardware you have the better your system will be at emulating other hardware/software. That doesn't necessarily mean a more expensive laptop. Where the demands of hacking and pen-testing demand vital and significant internal storage, the prerequisites for game emulation are generally just a good graphics processor, and good RAM/CPU.

Your laptop should also be in good working order and not muddled with high-risk pirated downloads and large bits of video. To emulate efficiently, you should also have as little processes and programs running in order for the emulator to run smoothly.

These are all common sense tips but...

@Lockdown and @Umbra , the Mega link in thread Basic Hardened AppGuard Policy XML no longer works. I.e., each time I've attempted to execute it over the last week, I receive error:

This could be due to the following reasons:

It was removed because it created more issues than benefits, some Appguard's users used it without understanding what it does then complain about AG blocking everything.
There is no chance it will be shared anymore.

Users will have to do it themselves by learning how to use AG.

Microsoft is aiming to better protect users and organizations from the threats that they face with a new feature called Windows Defender Application Guard. It's designed to isolate Microsoft Edge from the rest of the files and processes running on a user's computer and prevent computer exploits from taking hold.

Hopefully good zero-day behavioural protection features, such as virtualisation utilisation (via usage of hardware technology like VT-x/AMD-V SVM).

Not sure if this is the result of the ?Creator Update or coincidental hardware fail.
Yesterday my HP6735S laptop running W10 Home since last year was offered an update from v1607 (I think) to the latest. I allowed this to go ahead and waited .. and waited for about 4.5 hours all told.
Eventually it finished and after logging in again it appeared to be working.
After being left for a while it turned itself off - as normal.
I then tried to turn it on with the following result:-
Blue power light ON
WiFi LED Orange (Off)
HDD activity LED flashing Orange (Normally Blue)
DVD drive seeming to try accessing (Empty at the time)
Display Blank
Caps Lock LED flashing occasionally
Pressing and holding the power button turns Off as normal.
Tried removing battery and starting with adapter - same.
Tried putting in W10 *.iso DVD - same.
I can read the HDD in a caddy on another PC and it seems to be OK
(Except the small (100M) system partition reports empty)
I have 3 normal partitions:
Windows 7 (~100G)
Windows 10 (~100G)
Data (~500G)
I usually had to select W7 or W10 at start up.
Unfortunately I cannot run your SysInfo utility for obvious reasons.
Procesor is dual core AMD Turion X2 64bit with 4G RAM (2 x 2G)
Laptop came with (250G HDD)/Vista originally which I replaced with XP.
The HDD was later replaced with 1T HGST and installed W7.
W10 was installed using the code from W8 (bought) as a dual boot.
Any ideas?

I Just bought a 2017 XPS 13 ; Touchscreen Model ; i7 Processor with 16 GB of RAM
and this *** machine is a toaster!
Its just out of the box with windows 10 Pre Installed and its heating with or without the power plugged in.
It  is getting hot to the point where I cannot use it anymore ( At the Table or in my lap )
Also on a full charge the battery capacity is reflecting as 3 hours and 30 minutes only.
Is it normal? How do I fix this? I have done the BIOS update , System Firmware Upgrade etc. and everything is up to date. Tried reinstalling windows and also tried with the power saver mode but issue still persists.
What to do?

Answer:XPS 13 , 2017 OVERHEATING!

You don't mention which XPS 13 you have but my 9365 gets warm when something is working.  Anti-virus scans, system maintenance and others will heat the system even when you are not using it.
My system will get to 112 °F near the back and mostly on the left side.

The new Box V2 includes all of these features, plus an enhanced assessment tool that scans for weak or default passwords and other vulnerabilities hackers could exploit.

New Features
Leverages heuristic data gathered by Bitdefender about what safe and normal network traffic looks like, should it detect anything untoward?exploits, brute-force attacks, port scanning?the Box blocks access.

Monitor where you enter personal information?such as address, Social Security number, etc.?and prevent you from accidentally submitting that data on fraudulent or insecure websites.

Improved Hardware
Dual-core ARM Cortex A9 processor
1GB of DDR3 memory
4GB of eMMC/NAND storage

802.11n MIMO 2x2 + 802.11ac MIMO 33 AC1300

The beefier hardware is designed to run more activities locally, from the Box V.2 itself.

Price and Licensing
The Box Version 2 is expected to retail in the sub-$200 range, and will go on sale later this year with pre-orders beginning in summer 2017. Bitdefender says it will likely keep both devices on the market to provide different price points. Either device comes with a free year of security coverage from Bitdefender, which will cost consumers $99 a year afterwards.

Both BOX devices are now part of Bitdefender Total Security £34.94 at BitDefender UK and provide consumers with unlimited lic... Read more

Question: 2017 4K V nitro?

Sorry if this is the wrong thread, couldnt find anything in regards to the v nitro series.  Ive been looking at a new laptop to replace my V3-771g from 5 years ago and im looking at the V nitro series. The 2017 models are finally for sale but none have a 4K screen. I was wondering if this feature will be released on later models or not at all. Thanks

Answer:2017 4K V nitro?

Hi,  It is likely that 4K models will be released, however, acer hasn't confirmed this and it is only public speculation. The top tier models seem to have a GTX 1060, which isn't good enough for 4k gaming. I'd still recommend the 1080p version

Question: End of Vista 2017

I understand that Vista finishes in 2017. Can you expand on this for me?

I have Home Premium 32 bit at present and Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor seems to recognise only minor adjustments to be made. Would you suggest I upgrade now or wait until Vista ends?

Answer:End of Vista 2017

It will be just like XP. What it basically means is that there will be no updates from Microsoft for it. Vista will still work just like xp does still work.

If your happy with Vista then you can continue to use it for the rest of your life if you want.

What I recommend though is that do not use internet explorer use another browser. if you use it after the finish date as it will be vunerable and make sure you have a firewall and AV software protecting your system, but you should have that now anyway.

Hi, I just bought an XPS 8910 with 256 GB M2.SSD + 2GB HDD with 16GB DDR4 RAM.(Win10Pro) I installed whole necessary Sotwares, updates, etc. When I finish, I pluged in USB 3.0 Extern HDD (1TB)Then rebooted and started with Acronis TI 2017 CD.Till here everything works fine.TI does not recognised C:\ [M2.SSD] as normal but Extern HDD C:\ itself. So, I cant make any image copy with Acronis Live CDANY IDEA

Answer:M2.SSD Does not appear on Acronis TI 2017

The Chipset 8910 M2 drivers are not native to windows. You need to talk with Acronis about mass storage drivers.  There is support from Dell for Windows PE and DISM but it is not free.
Imaging using anything other than windows PE 10 and Microsoft Tools
is not supported by Dell or Microsoft. When you deploy a duplicated or imaged Windows installation, it is required that the System Preparation (Sysprep) tool is used before the capture of the image.
Dependencies
You must run Windows Setup before you use Sysprep.
You need a tool to capture an image of the installation, such as Microsoft DISM
