What password manager to you use as of 2017 ?

Question: What password manager to you use as of 2017 ?

So it's already July and why not take the time and talk about what password manager do we use as of 2017.

Are you using the native password manager of your browser ? And if you're using a third party one, is it open source such as KeePass or proprietary, stored locally or cloud based, used on your PC only or on all your devices ? And if happen to don't use any password manager at all, what's your trick to ensure your online safety ?

This is not a comparison or about what's THE best password manager, but about what's your favorite one and why you use it. And of course all related talks such as 2 step authentification, password strength, etc...

Preferred Solution: What password manager to you use as of 2017 ?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Is HP Setup Manager obsolete in 2016 and beyond?  After upgrading to Windows 10 the HP Setup Manager will not run.  "This app has been blocked for your protection."  The only way to run it is to log in to the hidden Administrator account. Is it worth going to the effort to resurrect it, or is it outdated and therefore should be removed?

Answer:HP Setup Manager -- still useful in 2017, on Windows 10?

Guess I just never used it on my Windows 7 laptop-never even saw it. I am a jump in and explore on my own type. I looked and it isn't even on this Windows 10 laptop I am using so it probably isn't even used anymore by HP on their machines. Most of the features it lists is stuff you can do on your own. For example, if you are setting up a printer run the software/driver disc that comes with it- it walks you through it. Stuff like "protect your computer" probably was details about the trial Anti-virus app that comes on most laptops. As far as backup- you can find that in Control Panel. If the program is listed in Programs and Features in Control Panel you should be able to Uninstall it there.Or another possible way here:http://www.laptopmag.com/articles/uninstall-programs-windows-10

Hi everyone, i have quite a few questions so i'll post separate threads rather than pollute one thread. I'm wanting to get something a lot better than windows defender. Comcast is my ISP so i can get NIS for free. As most of you are aware of Norton hasn't been doing a great job these days. There has been multiple vulnerabilities in its products that actually decreases the security of windows. Still NIS still does a pretty good job of scoring pretty well in the various test in terms of protection. I was thinking on going with either bitdefender or KIS but of course i would have to pay for those. If you were me would opt for NIS because its still pretty dang good and worlds better than bit defender or would you opt for one of the better products like KIS or bitdefender?

A friend asked my advice with a problem I've never encountered. He's a computer novice running Office 2010 on an Acer laptop with Windows 10 Home. He is recently unable to open Outlook 2010. The program is suddenly asking for a Data File Password which he did not install. We're guessing that the need for password started after a family member visited and used his laptop.

I have searched the web and found a few options including a free recovery tool at www.nirsoft.net/utils/pst_password.html

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to recover an unknown Data File password, or any experience with the recovery tool at Nirsoft? The Nirsoft site warns that the tool sets off a false positive with anti-virus thinking it delivers a trojan, when really it's because of the nature of what it does...crack Data File passwords.

Any thoughts from the TenForums family is appreciated.

Answer:Help to Recover Data File Password in Outlook 2010, Apr 2017

I've not tried this utility but NirSoft are well respected site and I use some of their (his?) other utilities for checking context menu items and so on. They work well.

I honestly think they are safe site.

Discussing recovering passwords is against forum rules though so you'll probably not get a answer on that front.

I am really frustrated with my lenovo purchase - I find it crazy that you can not submit an EMAIL to lenovo to report a bug or two or ten in most of their bug infested software. In order of priority - here is my problems. If this is not figured out by someone you will lose a customer first and a telecom executive 2nd. 1. ALSO BY THE WAY - THE WIRELESS DEVICE NEVER CONNECTS IN WIRELESS "N" MODE. This may be a Vista issue since the same intel controller works fine in both a dell and an HP in "N" mode, So whats up with "N" Support.    3. Diskkeeper is a lousy piece of software and all it is is a gimmick to buy something else you don't need. I keep on removing it and update keeps on putting it back. Good evening everyone. Thanks for your access to this thread. I hope you to read and answer for this question.

I want to ask everyone that which software should I use for keeping security of my PC.

Now I am using Bitdefender Total Security 2017 as main anti-malware soft on my main desktop PC.
And also I was using F-secure SAFE as anti-malware soft on my PC until last week.

Yesterday, I heard that new Avast Antivirus 2017 was released, and new Avast Free is including behaviour scanning system.

I am having trouble deciding which software should I use as anti-malware soft.
Please tell me about your recommend.

I think that...

?Protection features
Better : Bitdefender 2017 > F-secure SAFE > Avast Free 2017

?Performance and speed
Lighter : Avast Free 2017 > F-secure SAFE > Bitdefender 2017

?the risk of false positive trouble
Bigger risk : F-secure SAFE > Avast Free 2017 > Bitdefender 2017

?SSL (HTTPS) Scanning is enable without fake SSL certificate to browser
Unnecessary fake certificate : Avast Free, F-secure
Need fake certificate : Bitdefender Total

F-secure SAFE is the very nice solution as protection from malwares and keeping speedy PC. But it is having big risk of false positive ratings; especially the website blocking is not good with many many false positive ratings. And, sometimes slow down my PC.

Bitdefender Total Security 2017 is the best solution as protection from malwares. This software is providing users very nice anti-malware solu... Read more

Answer:Avast Free 2017 vs F-secure SAFE vs Bitdefender Total Security 2017

Quick question, why Bitdefender Total Protection? Do you need ALL those additional features, or looking for an Antivirus only, because there are Bitdefender Antivirus Plus and Free versions.

What about other protection software like Emsisoft Anti-Malware/Internet Security or ESET Nod32 Antivirus/Internet Security?

Hello, Guys!
I'm new on this forum but I Really Really like this good Forum
So I had Emsisoft for couple of months now
But Recently I've switched over to Avast Premier Beacuse I've never used Avast before So I wanted to try It out
But now I'm without any AV As I do not know what to Install Avast or Emsisoft!
I have licences for both So thats not the problem
Thanks In Advance And btw This forum really nice.

Answer:Avast Premier 2017 Vs Emsisoft Internet Security 2017

Both have excellent protection functions, but certainly they are two different security solutions.
I think the choice of one or the other one is really subjective, I've used Emsisoft for many years and it is my first choice

The title says it all! Currently using Norton Identity Safe's standalone password manager, but would like to start using Lenovo's instead. Attempted to import .DAT and/or .CSV files from Norton, but no option for these file types appeared in Lenovo's Password Manager. If not an option to import directly, is it possible to add one of the files to the location Lenovo stores the password manger entries?

Answer:W520 - Lenovo Password Manager - Can .CSV or .DAT files be imported from other Password Managers?

Hello,  No you can't import .CSV or .DAT files into Password Manager. It uses a .PWM file format, and uses a 256-bit key AdvancedEncryption Standard (AES) with Microsoft CryptoAPI. You can export your info to be used in another machine with the Thinkvantage Password Manager installed, but not from another password manager. More info here:Password Manager 4 Deployment Guide Cheers!

Which free offline password manager would you prefer (without cloud)?

I already use sticky password premium. Sticky password has improved its windows extensions with new graphical identifier for input fields. This has made it very easy to use and autofill works for all sites now.

But i want to know if KeePass is better, being a open-source & free. Does it's autofill works with every site?

Please share & help me decide.

Answer:BEST Offline Password Manager: KeePass Vs Sticky Password Free?

It looks like you want to use them for online form-filling. I would use neither of them, KeePass does not have good browser integration it relies on external add-ons and opens one port just for form filling. It is good for offline secure storage.Sticky Password free is good but does not offer anything extra other than the passwords(for my use).If you are using Sticky password it is good for onlline auto-logins.

A couple of years ago I moved myself and some of the fam from Apple Everything to Windows 10. Yesterday however, I bought an new 2017 iPad. I really love the Surface devices, so why?
LEAVING THE PLATFORM BECAUSE OF WINDOWS MOBILE
First, because Microsoft are no longer supporting the phones that are in our house, we are being forced from that platform. So rather than living and breathing completely and happily inside the Microsoft ecosystem, I am now forced to diversify and go elsewhere. This really is a big deal, and changes my thinking from the unthinkable (leaving the MS ecosystem) to the possible (shifting back towards Apple). That being the case, why should I then buy a Microsoft Surface tablet (I was planning to buying a new Surface Pro M3) when I an now FORCED to be open to Apple and Android?
EASE OF MOVING PLATFORMS
Second, Microsoft have made my leap back to Apple so easy, because they have done what Apple and Google have refused to do, which is to make their software available on the others' platforms. Thus the transition to iPad is easy. For example, Word and PowerPoint are effectively free (via my 365 account that I will not be renewing at full cost next time; I will use the academic version which costs me almost nothing). Outlook on iPad is a great app (better than on PC platform). Lots of other apps that Microsoft that I use are also really nice on iPad (e.g. Wunderlist) and made the transition really simple and clean.

Third, the Facebook app on iPad is ... Read more

Answer:I did the unthinkable and chose a 2017 iPad over a 2017 Surface Pro M3

Microsoft are no longer supporting the phones that are in our house, we are being forced from that platform
Can't make sense of that. Presumably you have really old windows phones that no longer get updates?
And what does that have to do with what tablet you use? Windows has timeline, cloud clipboard and a whole host of platform agnostic features coming this fall, so Windows will play nice with android or ios (better than those OSes play with any other).
You don't even need your tablet, desktop and phone to be the same platform. You just need the same services, which for MSFT, exist on every platform.

Hello, I received a new laptop for Christmas and, while testing out the keys, clicked on what I now know is the 'lock' button above the numpad. It locked the operating system, as expected. I swiped my fingerprint, but when I do so, it goes to Lenovo Fingerprint Manager Pro and informs me that it must validate my password. I cannot change the username or location, but it has two fields: New password and a second one to confirm the previous. I tried my Lenovo password, my Windows 8 password, writing nothing in the boxes, and creating a new password with all the usual limitations - numbers, 8 characters, etc., etc.. They all return with the same 'Credential Error' that it cannot validate my password. Windows 8 will not log me in unless I complete the Fingerprint login. Restarting does not seem to work. What can I do to fix it? I'd rather not format my PC a couple weeks after I got it, you know?

I have a ThinkPad SL400 with Windows Vista.  I have installed and am using Lenovo Password Manager.  During the install it sets the master password to match your windows login password.  The tools work good but now when I change my Windows Login Password the Password Manager will not work.  If I bring it up and try to login with the new password it appears to accept and closes the login window, but it does not activate.  If I use the old password it give a login failed message. I had to go and change my windows password back to the old value to get it working again.  Now that my passwords are stored inside the software I need it to work, but I also need to change my Windows Password. What is the method to change the master password for Lenovo Password Manager or sync it automatically with my windows password? Thom

Cyber criminals have started targeting the password managers that protect an individual's most sensitive credentials by using a keylogger to steal the master password in certain cases, according to research from data-protection company IBM Trusteer.
The research found that a configuration file, which attackers use to tailor the Citadel trojan for specific campaigns, had been modified to start up a keylogger when the user opened either Password Safe or KeePass, two open-source password managers. While malware has previously targeted the credentials stored in the password managers included in popular Web browsers, third-party password managers have typically not been targeted.
While the current impact of the attack is low, the implications of the attacker’s focus is that password managers will soon come under more widespread assault, Dana Tamir, director of enterprise security for IBM Trusteer, told Ars Technica.
“Once the malware captures this master key, then they can use that master key to exercise complete control over the machine and any of the user’s online accounts,” she said.

Question: Password Manager

OK- This is really driving me BONKERS! Something happened to my Password Manager. The passwords which used to come in automatically does not anymore! I have to put it in manually which my Password Manager used to control.

I'm using WINDOWS XP and my browser is Netscape 7.0(I also used Internet Explorer 6.0 to make sure it wasn't a browser problem and I got the same results).
In tools it shows that password manager is logged out. In the managed passwords section it shows all my passwords are still there. Out of 15 passwords 2 comes in automatically.

Someone has indicated to me that Password Manager is corrupted and has to be reloaded. Is that what I have to do? If so how do I do that? Also why is Password Manager shows I'm logged out? How can I log back in? I have tried every way possible to log back in but it doesn't give me that option. In preferences Managed Stored Passwords is checked so I know that is correct.

Any help would be appreciated!

Question: Password Manager

I have a password that is apparently still being 'managed' by Windows and I need to delete or change it!
Where do I find it and How do I delete or change????

Answer:Password Manager

There are a few places where PW are stored. Since I'm not sure which one you are referring to, I will list them

1) For Windows Stored Application Passwords - Go To Your Control Panel, then Go into "Users". Choose a Username, then after you have selected a user, on the left side is a menu. Select "Manage My Network Passwords"

2) For Internet Explorer Passwords, Go to your Control Panel, then Select Internet Options. Then Select the Content Tab, then click on AutoComplete.

3) Or If it is a PW that is saved by a Cookie, delete your cookies. Go to your Control Panel, then Select Internet Options. General Tab, then click Delete Cookies.

Were one of those options what you needed?

I've searched password managers on line but I can't tell if they cover both passwords online and desktop. I'm running Windows 8. I'd appreciate some recommendations if possible. Thanks in advance for your help.

Question: password manager

Hi Guys, My had to re image my hard drive yesterday and ofcourse I lost all my files etc. which I knew that I would. Now my problem is that my password manager does not seem to be working properly. Before the re image, I could go to any one of my yahoo or hotmail accounts and a password manager window would pop up and I could just click on the account that I wanted to go to and it would fill in the user name and password for that particular account. Now the little password manager window does not pop up even though I have saved all accounts information in the password manager. How do I correct the problem? What am I doing or not doing to cause the password manager window to not come up? Thanks for the help in advance.

My password manager seems to have disappeared. I am no longer asked to input my password a second time after logging on, and various websites where I had saved my login/password information are now asking me to input the information. My laptop is new (as of August 2007) and to my knowledge I have not done anything out of the ordinary--this morning, PM simply did not appear. Any suggestions? Thanks,M

Question: Password Manager

Hello folks I have so many passwords thinking of using a password manager was looking at keepass & others. What are your views on password managers & are they really safe? anybody got any suggestions.

Answer:Password Manager

I personally do not use any that integrate with my browser or store my passwords online as I think this is asking for trouble.
I use Password Manager XP and choose to not integrate into the browser. It is not free but I like it's user interface and it works well.
If you go with this one please note that even if you do not integrate it with IE, you still need to go in and disable an ad-on after installation that is used to ask you if want to store any new passwords in the password manager when using a password for the first time.

So what I want to do is have a Password Manager program:

It is a downloadable program (preferably free) that you register an account to and whenever you login with your account and Password it will give you your Username and Password to whatever you fill in.

I currently have Keeper to do this on my iPhone but it is not backed up and I do not want to save them to a text file in Notepad due to Security and if I have to restore my iPhone I will forget a lot of important Passwords.

Can someone please suggest a Password Manager for me to secure my Passwords.

Thank you, Joe.

I finally got the later version of Think Vantage Manger 2.0 installed and working months ago, but finally am getting around to asking this question. I've never had and don't want to set up a password to log into Windows, but soon discovered that if I disabled that option in Windows then the add-on in Firefox doesn't function properly.  I continually have to close the ThinkVantage Password Manager window to even get into a website where the Firefox Password function has already stored the info. I like using both because ThinkVantage  will save passwords on some sites that Firefox won't. So---How to I get the browser Think Vantage Password Manager to work properly without having to set a password for Windows log on? This morning I finally disabled ThinkVantage in FF just to eliminate those pop-ups requesting a password.  If I've confused anyone, I'm sorry but I'm certainly confused. Thanks

Hello,

Have been having lots of problems with the eternal-september newsreader via Thunderbird.

It was suggested that I delete all my username and password in "Password Manager" and try setting up a new Account for eternal-september news.

Where do I find this "Password Manager" where Thunderbird likely stored them ?

I looked, but just cannot find any reference to it via Search.

Thanks,
Bob

Answer:Password Manager: Where ?

Try this:

Tools> Options> Security Tab> Passwords sub tab> Saved Passwords> Select an entry and click on remove (or there is a remove all button).

Make sure you click on Show Passwords (and yes to confirm) and make note of any passwords you might not remember. And make sure your eternal-september is even listed there. Click close, and OK your way out. A Guy

Answer:Password manager

I (personally) would never use a password manager that is incorporated with a front line defense program such as Firewall or A-V as this would be the first point of attack for a hacker (cracker). If they can break through your main defense system they can easily scan it for passwords and stuff.Be careful. This one comes highly recommended although I haven't tried it myself click here

Question: Password Manager

I am thinking of using a password manager.

Two products seem to be recommended: Keepass or LastPass.

LastPass seems to be far easier to use, but I have difficulty in understanding why people trust a cloud based system with their sensitive information.

My question is Can I trust their cloud?

Thanks

Ps. I use websites that use passwords, I might use it for banking - only if absolutely convinced.

Answer:Password Manager

Hi,

Cloud-based services are usually more secure than your personal PC. So yes, storing information on a server somewhere is going to be more secure than storing that same information on your personal computer.

On that note, I personally would NOT store a banking password, either on my personal computer OR a cloud-based system. Just remember, though, that most browsers now even use cloud-based backup for passwords, etc. as well. So, if you save passwords in your browser, and have the cloud service enabled on that browser, you're already storing those passwords in a cloud environment.

Hi
A bit of advice
I am looking for a Windows Password Manager. I would like it to have the facility to keep the encrypted data file in the My Documents\XXXX folder ie have a user selected location so that it will be transferable with all my other documents across several computers. I would also like it to act as the automatic source for passwords when logging in from a browser just as the current browser saved passwords do. Have looked at vseveralo options but these facilities don't seem to be specifically mentioned.

Good evening everyone! Thank you for your access to here and reading my post.
Tonight, I want to ask you that how much the Avast Free Antivirus reaches some solid anti-malware software, which are the paid version.

Now I am using F-secure SAFE as Trial license on desktop PC, which is one of the mine.
It seems to nice for protect PC and F-secure SAFE is light despite it is one of the very strong scanning system as consumers.

But now, I am worrying about false blocking by browsing protection of F-secure SAFE.
In usually, f-secure is not making something to bad situation for me, I am feeling it.
But the Browsing protection feature of F-secure SAFE blocks websites too many times.
The most of sites, which were blocked by F-secure are obviously safe. Of cause, they are judged safe sites by other major antimalware soft (e.g. Avast, Bitdefender Total Security).

So I want to compare them; Avast Free Antivirus 2017 and F-secure SAFE 2017(or Internet Security 2017).
I want to ask you that which is the more strong software under the below situation...

1.
OS is Windows10 Home and updated with latest security patch.
2.
Main browser is the latest of Mozilla Firefox with ublock origin.
3.
If I use Avast Free 2017, I will configure some setting (e.g. File Shield, Mail Shield, Web Shield, and Behavior Shield) to aggressive security level. For example, I will configure by referring to this page avast! Optimal Protection settings by RejZoR

I've noticed that my password manager no longer stay running.  Other than the ability to login with my fingerprint, it no longer auto-fill entries, nor does it ask for new ones.  I've checked all the preferences, and everything seems to be on and running.  However, I note that when I first turn on the PC and login, I get an About password_manager screen showing the version number.  I click OK, and then I notice that the password manager icon in the system tray disappears.  So, I go to CSS and click the button to Manage my passwords, which opens up the Password Manager screen.  All my entries show without issue.  If I close the window, that About password_manager comes back up again.  Now, as long as I leave that About password_manager on the screen, it seems to work.  I get asked to enter new passwords, and it filles in existing ones.  However, as soon as I click OK, I'm back to no functionality.  So, what happened?  I can't believe that I need to leave that annoying screen on all the time just to get it to work.

Answer:Using KeePass as a password manager

I've always been scared of things like bitlocker and the above mentioned because, one day, you will not remember the master password. I've steered well clear of these types of programs and would never have, or save, any encrypted passwords on my PC. Find another way around it and as far away from the PC as possible is my advice.

I have had Norton Password Manager on my last two computers. I have reinstalled it twice on my newest computer due to problems with Systemworks 2006. Here's where it gets weird. I have reinstalled it both those times from my 2006 CD. No problem. I had to reformat due to a virus (yeah, thanks Norton for all the protection!). Upon trying to install Password Manager, I am being asked for a Product Key. I just tried to install the one from Sys. 2006 but it isn't accepted. They are now telling me that Password Manager is not on 2006(!) or shouldn't be the CD and I must repurchase 2004 for $60!

Any way around this? Is there another program like this out there? I am not planning on using Norton's virus protection anymore and refuse to give them anymore business.

I have been thinking about security more recently and have decided that for all my banking websites, shopping, and even e-mail addresses, I should use secure passwords with a combination of letters, numbers, symbols, uppercase, lowercase, etc, whereas currently for a number of my e-mails I use fairly simple passwords. The reason for this is that if anyone gains access to an account which I previously considered not very significant, there is probably some identifiable information about me, or they can figure out other accounts that I have and try to hack into those and eventually gain enough information that could cause damage.

The other thing I have done is use variations of the same password (eg, http://www.groovypost.com/howto/how-to/memorable-secure-passwords/). However, I don't like the idea of using something similar for several different sites, wouldn't it make more sense to use completely unrelated passcodes for each website?

So taking all this into account, is there a password manager or software that I can use to keep different passwords on every site and use the manager to enter in my usernames and passwords on each site so I save time in typing, and the main question, is it safe and secure to use a program like this on my local computer? I might also not even plan on memorizing any passwords and just let the manager store everything?

Answer:Password program/manager

I don't personally like to have passwords stored anywhere but in my head, but both LastPass and KeyPass come highly recommended. I like the idea from the site you posted, but I use the method Mozilla foundation came up with. I just wrote a more detailed post about this on my blog a few days ago: http://compuclinic.us/compuclinic-r...-passwords-a-toilet-paper-have-in-common.html
