Computer not detecting updates

Question: Computer not detecting updates

Hey, I'm new here. I have a CyberPowerPC desktop, running Windows 10 Pro (build 1607), and it didn't and still doesn't detect the update for build 1703. Don't know why, or how. Can anyone on here give me an explanation for why it wouldn't detect the update(s)?

Preferred Solution: Computer not detecting updates

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Computer not detecting updates

Welcome to TenForums @FanaticGuide

The Creators Update is being rolled out in phases, not everyone will see the 'Features update to Windows 10, version 1703' straight away. Also, there are some known issues with particular hardware - PCs that have such issues are blocked from receiving the Creators Update until Microsoft have developed fixes for these issues. There's more on the phased rollout here...

Windows 10 Creators Update rollout: First phase update
Windows 10 Creators Update roll out on track and expanding the mean time you should still be getting the regular cumulative updates so you shouldn't worry about missing out on security fixes.

How do I get Windows 8.1 to detect updates for Office 2007?

In the update settings, I only have two checkbox options.

I look at another Windows install and they have four checkboxes, one of which says something like "include updates for other Microsoft products".

Is there a KB I can install/registry tweak to get Windows update to show all four options?

Answer:W8.1 Not Detecting Office Updates

in windows 8.1 there are only two checkboxes.

How do I get Windows 7SP1 to detect updates for Office 2007?

In the update settings, I only have two checkbox options.

I look at another Windows install and they have four checkboxes, one of which says something like "include updates for other Microsoft products".

I have tried the following:

1. Downloaded the latest windows update agent.
2. Change some registry setting for Office from 1 to 0 to get it to show "Microsoft Update" opt-in screen when you start an Office program.

None of that worked.

(Btw, this is happening inside a virtual machine. Could this be the problem, windows doesn't update Office inside a VM?!?!?)

Answer:Windows 7 not detecting Office updates

The VM shouldn't have anything to do with your problem.

Probably the thing to do is to reset Windows Update to default, and work from there.

I encountered an issue that the windows update is detecting old updates (2014, 2016). It could not get the latest one (January) though the servers are being patched monthly (last patch is Dec 2017).

Before I encounter the issue, I performed a C drive clean-up and deleted large files under C:\windows\installer\$PatchCache$\Managed. Though last month, I also performed this but did not encounter any issue. The difference is, I did not remove all the large
files (100 MB) and on this month, I removed the remaining files.
I also removed old virus definitions on the server.
Can you please help me with this issue? How can the servers detect the latest windows update?
Your response is highly appreciated! Thanks!

Every time there is a windows update, my computer turns itself on and installs the update on its own. It's really annoying when I leave my home for a few days and come back to find the computer on at the log-in screen. How can I make it so the computer doesn't automatically turn itself on and install the updates?

Answer:Windows updates - Computer boots up on it's own and installs updates, how can I stop it doing updates on it's own?

In your PC settings, try setting Windows update to anything except "Automatic". However, with this setting change, you would need to regularly check for updates to ensure that your PC is up-to-date with regards to security.

The Story of this probably isn't that important, the main thing is, my Drive isn't detecting the DVD i put in it, and the funny thing is when i put another one in, it detects that one, so i was just this a Problem with the DVD or the Drive...Cause the DVD is real important...(the story is related to alot of photos that weren't burned onto a CD because i was lazy)...also the DVD was just fine 1 month what the hell is wrong with it...

Also i don't know if this is in the right section of the forum, so you people may move it at will...

Answer:Computer Not Detecting DVD...

More than likely a problem with the DVD, especially if another one works in the drive. You can try the disk in someone elses drive and see if you can access the data.

Hello. I've recently replaced some parts: mobo, processor, ram, and power supply. I've also formatted and freshly installed 64 bit Vista in place of the 32 bit XP I was using previously. My 2 hard drives that i have plugged in are both older ide Seagate hdd's. My new mobo only has sata plugs, so I got an ide > sata converter. Anyway, my computer has no problems with my main hdd, ipod, or external hdd, but it doesn't detect my 2nd(slave) hdd. I tried checking in bios, and it doesn't detect my slave hdd either. I have the jumper thing plugged into the main hdd as the master, and non set up on the slave hdd. Also, if this helps at all, there's a red light that I'm guessing lets you know that the ide > sata converter is working. The main hdd's converter is lit up, while the slave's isn't lit up. The slave hdd's converter lights up when only the converter's plugged into the hdd, but once i plug the power into the hdd, the light turns off. I don't know what the problem could be; the hard drive was working perfectly just hours earlier(on my old set up). Any ideas on what could be wrong and how to fix it?

Answer:Computer Not Detecting HDD

Need a little help visualizing. Did you get a IDE to SATA adapter for each drive or double lead single unit?

If they're independent try swapping them to make sure the adapter is working, try jumpering both as master as there is no Primary/Secondary relationship established by jumpers with SATA. Also check the BIOS to make sure you have the 3/4 SATA controller enabled if you're trying to use one of them.

I just recently bought a gig of ram to upgrade my computer (I also got a new gpu with it), but I had both sticks of ram in (I have two gigs) and it detected both sticks, but I reinstalled my OS.. and then my pc stopped detecting both, I know that neither are fried because they work individually just fine, yet together they don't work right. If it helps one is DDR and the other is DDR2. If you need to know the companies, I can post them too.

Answer:Computer isn't detecting all of my RAM

There is your problem. DDR and DDR2 can't work together. The number indicates a channel the ram operates at. Looks like it can see it there but not use it because you MB is not designed to work with DDR2. I'm surprised it fit in the slow. I would go buy a stick of DDR considering its awfully cheap now with DDR3 out, and see what happens when you put it in with the other DDR stick.

I uninstalled all my nvidia drivers and then tried to install the new up to date ones but after i uninstalled all of the nvidia drivers i cant install any drivers at all. I went to device manager and it is not detecting my video card at all but i look inside case and looks to my like its running. Is there any way for me to make it so my computer will detect my video card? ( i have a nvidia fx 5700 LE w/ gigabyte k8-triton series nforce 3 MOBO)

Answer:computer not detecting

The only things I can suggest is. Uninstall anything to do with your Nvidia graphics drivers from add remove programmes in your control panel.

Download the driver cleaner programme from HERE. Follow the instructions.

Then reinstall your drivers. Hopefully that will solve your problem. If it doesn`t I have no other ideas, I`m afraid.

Hey I just got a new computer. I built it myself so its all from scratch.I guess the only important things you might need to know is that I have: Windows XP Pro,, the story I'll try to make it as clear as possible.I put together the computer, turned it on, inserted XP. It installs XP but when it went to launch XP, my computer shut off due to the processor overheating. It was no big deal just my room is to hot for this computer I have, so I moved downstairs. Well I turn it on, the overheating problem is gone, and I find out that now it doesn't do anything. It goes to a black screen.Being more detailed about whats happens when I turn on the pc. It loads and gives me the DEL for setup and TAB for bios message. Then it lists any Errors that happened. The error is: (a sentence picking out my cd/dvd drive) detect device done, no any drive foundthen the screen is black and nothing happens. So I went into the bios to double check, and sure enough my cd/dvd is there but its not being detected. Nothing is working I am totally lost as to going about finding my drive. I cannot do anything but enter the bios.Any solutions would be welcomed ^_^. Thanks

I advice you to reintall your operating system. also make sure that your processor, fan and heat sink are install properly. And to check if cd or dvd rom is ok, remove it and boot your computer and if it persist, then do same with other hardwares. If possible start afresh eg partitioning, farmating and xp installation. Hey guys,
I have spent a while trying to fix my mums computer, and spent even longer trying to find a solution but to no avail, so could you guys help?
So the problem is her mouse, the pointer is just sitting there on the screen unmoving. Even though the laser on the mouse is on.
The pc is running windows vista.
I looked at the mouse settings through control panel but no device appears in the hardware tab. It also doesn't appear in device manager.
I have tried turning the computer on and off again. I have tried different mouses (is that the plurral) both USB and ps/2, and it's defiantly in the right slots. I have put USB speakers into the same USB slot and they work. I have tried the original mouse in a spare laptop and that works. I have also looked in bios and nothing seems wrong there.
The only thing showing there is a mouse is dxdiag.
I can't run a virus scan as I can't tab to the scan now option, but it runs one regulary.
Any ideas?

Hi my dads computer is not detecting its mouse. It is a wireless microsoft mouse. the wireless keyboard works. I tried using a different mouse that was wired and it wasn't even detected! Again I tried ANOTHER mouse and that didn't work either.. the lase on the bottom dosen't even turn on.. Its windows XP with all of the updates and it is maintained very welll. If anyone has any suggestions please post.

Oh yeah, the mouse was working yesterday and my dad says it just froze and since then it hasn't worked.

Answer:Computer not detecting mouse

Working yesterday? The system is XP?

Start > run: msconfig > Launch System Restore and choose a date prior to the problem.

If it doesn't correct it, it's probably a hardware problem.

If it's a USB mouse, try a different port. Or try a PS/2 mouse if you have one.

I have a Diamond ATI HD 5670 graphics card installed, and when ever I try to connect my Toshiba LCD HDTV 40E220U to the computer it comes back saying "No Video Signal", I tried what the manual said for the HDTV. But it still wont recognize my HDTV, what should I do?

Answer:Computer not detecting HDTV

Hello Razor,

Double check to make sure that in the HDTV on screen settings you are selecting the correct input you connected the PC to. Usually this would be a HDMI or DVI connection.

In addition, in the PC's "Screen Resolution" settings, you may need to select to display to the HDTV.

Hope this helps for now,

Can you tell if a computer has been dismantled and put back together by checking data on the computer? I have a Toshiba Satellite C665 and took it to a shop for virus removal and when I got it home noticed a screw missing from its place on the back panel. The shop has not informed me of any dismantling and when I check the event log (which I don't really understand) there appears to be over 24hrs of shut down period. I hope im just paranoid but I would just like to be sure

Answer:Detecting computer tampering

Virus removal does not need the PC to be opened but if the shop was just being conscientious they may have opened it to see if it was full of dust and done a cleaning job.

One other point i will make is that some unscrupulous techs have been know to switch parts for lesser quality but unless you know the specs of your PC before sending it to the shop it would be hard to prove.

I only state this because i build PCs and always record all parts i fit to a customers rig,so when a client came to me saying he had put his PC is a repair shop when he was out of town and the video quality had deteriorated i found they had switched the graphics card.
I contacted the shop with the serial number of the card they said they had tried a different graphics card and forgot to replace the original

When I turn my PC on, the screen usually comes on automatically.
But it's stopped working.
I can hear the power supply on the tower, but it doesn't seem to be making the "loading up" sounds from the hdd etc.
Also, the screen doesn't detect that it's gone on and just stays on standby.
All the leads to the monitor are connected etc.
What could be wrong?

Answer:My PC screen isn't detecting the computer is on...

I can hear the power supply on the tower, but it doesn't seem to be making the "loading up" sounds from the hdd etc
PSU failure
HDD failure although I would expect screen and a error message

Make sure no disks in drives (mine does similar if a blank CD or DVD is left in) unplug all USB devices retry.
Unplug the tower press and hold the power key for 30 secs plug in and retry.

Yo I've got a pentium 2 computer(I know its already outdated) ,running on windows 98. Answer:Computer not detecting my pen drive

Are you sure you have the correct driver for the right operating system?I don't think the mouse and keyboard drivers would affect other drivers. If it is a fairly new pen drive, 98 might not support it.What brand pen drive do you have?

My older computer is refusing to detect any of my PCI cards. Specs:
Epox HPHAL+ Motherboard
AMD 1600+

Radeon 9800
Windows XP Home

My Soundblaster live, ATI TV Tuner, and network card refuse to be detected.

In BIOS, I enabled PNP OS. Not sure if this should be enabled or disabled.

Any suggestions?

Answer:Computer isn't detecting PCI cards

it should be enabled for pnp to work correctly. Go into the device manager and see if they might just be unrecognized, click the scan for hardware changes while your in device manager(but I doubt it will do anything) Make sure all the motherboard drivers are installed, and updated as well.

PnP should detect sb live, and the ati card. Xp home should have a set of drivers for both.

I'm running a P4 2.4 on a Gigabyte 8iexp. The mobo supports 2gb of memory, ddr 2700/2100. I was running 1gb of ddr 2700 (two 512mb sticks; these to be exact), although I think effectively they're only running at 2100/266 due to my mobo.

I was replacing a heatsink and figured I'd max out the memory while I was at it so I bought and installed a stick of 1gb (this one) to give me 2gb total. However, the computer will not recognize more than 1.5gbs.

Each stick works on its own. Each of the 3 slots in the mobo works too. I've moved each stick around to make sure that each stick and each slot works. However, when all 3 are in it will only recognize 2 of them (i.e. either 1gb or 1.5gb, depending on which 2 sticks I have in).

Is the third stick putting me over the mobo's max somehow. Any ideas?

Time for a re-install, and look at your BIOS setups closely... you likely have some problems that can be corrected with changes as you boot to <F2> or <F10>
Start with Default, then go through each setting on the list. There are specific settings for IDE/EIDE... and they are not always obvious changes by the way they are worded...

I just got a brand new out of the box computer today at work. The computer is an HP (don't have the model number, but it's probably one of the $400 jobs at Walmart) operating on Windows 7. My old keyboard, the one I NEED to use, is an older ergonomic keyboard. By older I mean it's at least 8-10 years old. It has the round plug at the end of the cord, but I have an adapter with the USB plug that I can use. The adapter came with a brand new keyboard I purchased for my house about 2 months ago.

To summarize the events of today... My PC got set up this morning, but I didn't know until it was to late that the ergo keyboard had the wrong plug so I had to use the cheap keyboard that came with the PC until I got back from lunch with the adapter. When I got back to work I shut the PC down and plugged the ergo keyboard in, but the computer did not recognize it. It didn't even show it listed in the keyboard area of the Control Panel. I shut the PC down, switched USB ports, and tried again. Nothing! The lights on the keyboard won't even turn on. It appears that there's no communication at all!

The place where I work HATES spending money on supplies. The computer I just got switched over from was operating on Windows 2000 if that gives you any clue so they don't want to buy me an ergo keyboard. I'll most likely have to shell out the cash myself if I want one unless I can get this old one to work.

Any ideas on what's happening? Is... Read more

Hey guys,

So I wanted to set up RAID0 on my computer, as I had a 500GB and a 320GB HDD in my computer and a 500GB external. So I wiped my 320GB HDD and then transferred all of my files from the external onto it. The OS still detected the drive fine.

Then I removed my 320GB and put it into the external enclosure and now it's not being detected at all. I've been around hardware enough to know that I didn't do anything to damage it while transferring it, and I know that it's interfacing with the enclosure because it's powering up and getting hot when I leave it idling.

But it doesn't even show in BIOS, meanwhile my 8GB Sony USB stick shows up.

I am now taking it apart again and reconnecting it to the interface, but I know that that won't fix it, so do you guys have any suggestions?

Some oddities between Edge and Firefox on Windows 10, just curious why...

Edge and Firefox 39 on Windows 10, with physical locations disabled in OS and browsers. In both browser, DDG is my default search engine.

After typing in "weather" at, Edge shows this result:

The link circled on top right in red is displayed on the bottom left with "close enough" actual GPS location of my computer, when the mouse pointer is placed over it. The weather images, such as "Right now", "Today", etc., are hyperlinked to the same site, but the links does not show on the bottom left.

The "close enough" is pretty close, within 3-4 miles to the actual location of the computer. This is a desktop PC with Ethernet connection only, no wireless.

Doing the same search in Firefox, results in this:

There's no link to the site in the search results. Copy/pasting the Forecast link into Firefox pups up a windows, asking if I'd want to share the location of my computer with site. After declining the offer, the site displays the forecast in a different state about 60 miles away from my computer.

The WWW consortium has a Geolocation API - here's the specification: Geolocation API Specification
Here's an excerpt:

"The Geolocation API defines a high-level interface to location information associated only with the device hosting the implementation, such as latitude and longitude. The API itself is agnostic of the underlying location information sources. Common sources of location information include Global Positioning System (GPS) and location inferred from network signals such as IP address, RFID, WiFi and Bluetooth MAC addresses, and GSM/CDMA cell IDs, as well as user input. No guarantee is given that the API returns the device's actual location."

Drivers are all up to date, it's all plugged in fine and in the correct places. I have speakers plugged into the back and headphones plugged into the front, yet my computer still says no speakers or headphones are plugged in. I have even gone to the effort of reinstalling windows completely but to no avail. I am using on-board audio by the way and it is enabled in the BIOS, please help I've literally tried everything I can think of, looked online on all the forums but still nothing has helped and I am officially lost.

Answer:My computer isn't detecting any audio device help please

According to the ASRock site, this has RealTek HD Audio. Do you have the correct RealTek driver or do you have the generic Windows installed "High Definition Audio Codec"? If you only have the Windows installed High Definition Audio Codec, the first step is to get the correct RealTek Driver. ASRock only has Vista drivers but they are applicable to Windows 7. However, the most current RealTek driver can be downloaded direct from RealTek.

Your system has the RealTek ALC888 hardware. The RealTek High Definition Codecs are the correct drivers.

Also, please post a screen shot of the Device Manager, Sounds section.

Hi guys,

First off I should say that I am at a beginner level and even though I would say I know more than the average Joe, compared to you guys I am but a blip on the radar. Ok, so here's my problem;

About 2-3 months ago I left my computer with my brother in Kansas City and before I get to ahead of myself this is a hand built computer. No one component is from any direct maker such as Dell. They are all different hand picked parts from a guy that built it as I just forwarded the money. Ok, so as I was saying is that I left the computer in his care and I know when I left it that everything worked fine. However, I noticed that when I got the computer back 3 months later after it being shipped to Arizona that the Wireless N card was not being picked up by the computer at all. Pushing past all the magnitude of dust left behind from the computer being in his closet, I noticed that nothing was disconnected. I find this a little weird as I said before it was all working. Can someone or anyone tell me what I would have to do in order for my computer to once again recognize that I have a wireless n card already built into the machine.
Thanks again and I hope I can be of any assistance.

A few days ago, our HP Deskjet 6122 suddenly stopped communicating with our computer and refused to print from any program. After re-booting and trying a few other quick fixes with no success, I assumed something must have been corrupted, uninstalled the printer (including all traces of HP software) and used the CD that came with it to try a clean reinstall. Unfortunately, now I can't reinstall the drivers because the computer isn't detecting the printer, which is both plugged in and turned ON at the time. Tried again with new drivers downloaded from HP, but this was also a no go. Have rebooted/plugged and unplugged the printer cable hook-up multiple times. Also did an uninstall/reinstall of LPT1. Unfortunately, I can't test the printer with a different computer since we only have one and I can't try a different printer cable unless we go buy a new one (which I'm hesitant to do except as a last resort). Am at a loss for how to proceed--about to tear my hair out. Can anyone *please* help??

Computer is a 3-week old Dimension 4700 running XP Pro, SP2. Printer is on a parallel connection and worked just fine w/ the new computer before suddenly becoming non-responsive 2 days ago.

My Windows 7 computer does not detect my new iPod Touch at all. When I plug it in it does make a little "blip" noise like t's connected but my computer does not do anything. I do not get an AutoRun box asking what I want to do. If I manually go into my Control Panel and choose the option to "Find new devices" the iPod does not even appear as one of the devices to add. My iOS is the most up-to-date version and it does charge through the computer.

Do you have another computer or cable to try to see if its the computer or the cable? My brother had one of these and it had some issues. He fixed it by using a powered usb hub to power the device. For some reason his computer was able to connect and charge it, but communications wouldnt work until powered by an alternate device, so his power supply was probably enough to charge it, but when it was having to be powered and communicate, that drawed a few too many milli-amps and th connection wouldnt be made.

I've got a pentium (R) 4 3.00 Gh with gigabyte motherboard (circa 2003)
Everytime I startup, it very slowly goes through bootup but stalls at:
"detecting IDE drives".

Answer:Computer stalls at detecting IDE drives

Turn off the PC and unplug it. Open the case and unplug the cables from all of your hard drives AND optical drives.[1] Turn the PC back on and you should get an error that no disks are present, or something like that. Turn it back off and connect up only your boot drive. Power on and go into the BIOS and see if your drive is seen by the BIOS in the general bios section. If so, then reload BIOS defaults, save and exit, allow reboot and it should boot to your OS.

If it's not there, then try swapping the cables, again using only one drive.

If it still does not find it, slave the drive into another computer to verify that it mounts at all. This message can happen if you have a bad HD controller on one of your drives...

Otherwise, if you can boot, then keep shutting down and adding one drive back at a time until you find the one device that causes the failure. If you're lucky, it's the optical drive...

Post back and let me know what you find. I'll not bother you with worst-case scenarios right off the bat :)

[1] Alternatively, you can make the first troubleshooting step be attempting to boot a bootable cd/dvd from your optical drive to make sure it works. If it fails, then it's probably a bad optical drive, and removing it should get you back to booting.

Answer:Computer Only Detecting 1 Hard Drive

If you can't see it in windows disk manager you will have to use a 3rd party tool to detect and format the drive.

New drives come in 'raw' format - a format windows doesn't recognize.

I had to reinstall Windows 7. All went well except that computer will now only recognize 1 hard drive. The bios shows a second hard drive, but I cannot find it by going into computer managment. Further, my crappy bios has no features to allow me to manipulate anything.

A bit of background. I might be responsible for this as I was using a program called "Killdisk" to wipe my hard drive clean. I ended up canceling the job a couple of hours into it as it was taking too long. Since then, I have not been able to view it.

Yeah... I'm a dumbass.

Need some ideas and options please.

The hard drive is 500g. System is Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit.

Do you have access to a Live Linux CD (like Ubuntu)?

If so:
Disconnect your good HDD
Reboot your PC with the Live CD in the drive
Use the "Try" option (not the "Install" option)
Once its booted up, start "GParted"
Try to reformat your bad HDD (choose NTFS)
If you use Ubuntu with Unity you will have to type "Gparted" in the Search box (no quotes). If you are using an older version you should be able to find it in:System menu > Administration > Gparted

I purchased this laptop earlier today and have not been able to detect and connect to my personal wifi. I have another (non HP) laptop which currently does not, and has not had wifi connectivity issues. My phone is also able to connect to my wifi without issue. I've gone through every option in the "common fixes for wireless connectivity issues" thread and was not able to detect my network but have been able to detect every single one of my neighbors' networks. I've also tried alternating channels on my router, changing the wireless band frequency from 5Hz to 2.4Hz, uninstalling and reinstalling the network drivers. On two occassions I was able to detect my network but after I typed in my password it said I was unable to connect to this network and then my network would no longer show up.   I'm at a loss here, I'm very tempted to just return this laptop and buy a different brand. Help would be appreciated. Thanks

My mothers computer has stopped detecting the hard drive on boot up. Nothing has been changed (except for installing some new software for a digital camera).

On start up, it goes through the bios screens but then fails to find any boot up files - It finds the floppy and cd rom drive but not the hard disk.

It has an AMD K7 series motherboard with AMI dual Bios. Part number is GA-K7ZX. The processor is a duron 800MHz. I can't remember the size of the hard drive but i think it is about 20mb.

Looking in the BIOS settings it seems to have 'lost' the primary master hard drive.

Trying autodetect simply comes back with "not found".

Any ideas?

Thanks for any help.

I recently installed Windows 7 Ultimate x64 onto a laptop which once has had working internet.
Since the installation has been completed, I no longer have access to internet. Wireless or wired.

In the bottom right of the screen it has the network icon with a red X through it. When I try to troubleshoot it says:
Windows did not detect a properly installed network adapter. Seeing as the network adapter has worked previously I am stumped. I have tried installing drivers but none of them have seemed to work.
It seems like the computer is not registering there is hardware for the internet.

Also, when I go into my device manager, there isn't an option for network adapters there.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as this has been stumping me all day long.

Before I start, I have a Gateway DX-4860 UB-20P. OK, here's my situation. Earlier this week (on Tuesday) I bought an RX 480 card. I installed it in my PC and it worked just fine. Yesterday I bought another a memory stick (2 GB of RAM) and when I installed it on my PC and booted it up, my PC no longer detected the RX 480! It switched to onboard video. So, doing what anyone else would do, I took out the new memory stick and turned the computer back on. My computer was still not detecting the RX 480! So after that I put back in my prior video card (a GTX 650 Ti) and my computer wasn't detecting that either! My computer is stuck in onboard video.I know it isn't my monitor because I tried using a different monitor and that didn't work either. I even updated my BIOS and reset the CMOS and I'm still stuck in the same situation. Oh, and there's no way to manually disable my onboard video. There's no option in BIOS at all. And formatting my hard drive and reinstalling Windows wouldn't do anything because I get no signal from the video card during startup before it even loads Windows. Is my motherboard ruined? This is a relatively new motherboard (it's an Acer Aspire M3970). I got it in 2014.I have a Corsair CX750M power supply. Please help. Thanks.

Okay, this is kind of a funny story here, but I will cut it short. I have a Linksys Gateway Adapter (WMP54G V2). I have 2 computers: 1 is wireless and the other is hardwired through the router/modem. I want to basically switch this setup (meaning my wireless computer become hardwired and my once hardwired computer become wireless). Everything went fine... I took out my network adapter in my wireless comp. and I hooked up the modem and router to my once wireless computer. I could get on the internet fine with it. (by the way, my router is a WRT54GS v7)

The trouble starts when I try to install the network adapter in my ONCE wired computer. I slide it into a PCI slot, successfully finish the Found New Hardware Wizard and everything... BUT the Wireless Internet Connection icon is not in the taskbar! When I go to my network connections, there is nothing there!
Also, device manager shows that it should be fully working....
Any ideas?

I've had my computer for about a year now, a week ago I was playing Saints Row IV and my computer froze and made a buzzing noise from the speaker.

I immediately turned off the PC and turned it back on.

When I got back on I saw no problems, so I continued playing, 'till it happened again.

I opened up my computer and sure if all the fans worked, and they were, I also went ahead an replaced my thermal paste.

I also did a disk clean up, and a registry clean.

The computer doesn't crash often now, only when I play games for a long period of of time, I also noticed that dxdiag couldnt detect my computers specs and my computer isn't running as fast as it used to.

Any ideas?

I am trying to fix my gf's familys PC. She messed it up when she tried to install new ram. Long story short they needed a new mobo and it came in today and I'm trying to get things up and running around.

The computer has one HD and one cd-rom. The harddrive is set to master and is at the end of one ide cable with nothign else on it. The cd-rom is also set to master and at the end of the second ide cable with nothing else on it.

When I go into BIOS, under the "Advanced" tab, I go into "IDE Configuration" it lists the Harddrive has "Primary IDE Master", nothing installed under Primary IDE Slave, it lists the cd-rom drive under "Secondary IDE Master", and again nothing under secondary ide slave.

When I go into the Boot Device Priority section, there is only ONE option there, and it is set to the cd-rom

but when I let the computer boot from the windows xp disk, it does its thing but then shortly after I get this message saying "Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer. Make sure any hard disk drives are powered blah blah blah"

so whats going on? its there but its not there

there must be a setting or something in this bios im missing?

I cannot understand why its doing this, as I have tried them BOTH in a different computer and both work happily alongside eachother, which indicates they both work, and theres a fault with my IDE controller, but the same happens on the secondary IDE port, although if on different connectors they work! I just bought a new LG 22MP58VQ monitor and it was working fine, however sometimes when the screen turns black due to being idle, moving the mouse will not turn the monitor back on, my pc signal light will turn orange when not used for long periods and when this problem occurs pressing keys on the keyboard also does not turn the monitor back on, after I press keys the light will turn blue to indicate it coming off sleep mode but the monitor still will not turn back on. The only way to get the monitor to detect the signal is by pressing the button on the monitor itself in which it will detect the signal and the screen will light up again. This problem only occurs sometimes and I do not know the cause of it. I am also using a hdmi cable to connect pc to monitor, i haven't tried vga or dvi. Note: when the monitor doesnt turn on the power light for the monitor is flashing it just wont detect the signal coming from the pc. Any ideas?

You have to change the jumper situeted at the rear of the hdd from master to slave or vice versa that mean's one must be a master drive while the other should be a slave cause changing the cable as you said has nothing to do in this process

Answer:Computer not detecting Harddrive, CD or DVD drives

have you look into the jumper setting?

Some of these pre-build system will only allow you to have 1 HD at 1 channel during boot up, so the boot HD must be it's own channel and set as master.

Did you install the software BEFORE you plugged it in the first time?Did you use the included software to do the install by their steps?Have you tried a different USB cable?Have you checked the power cable/power light?Did you unlock the bed?Have you tested the USB port with another device?IF your scanner uses power from the USB port, does your MB support the powered device? if not, then you may need a powered hub.I just checked you model#. This is an All-in-one Printer which includes scanning. This is not what you stated above, plus this is a few years old model. Are you sure you have Windows 7 drivers for it? Did you download the Printing and scanning drivers and all other scanning software available for it from HP? Specifically for Windows 7?You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

I have a wired lan connection directly from my ASUS router to my desktop computer. The connection has been fine for months. Last night I shut my desktop and turned it on normally this morning. It is no longer detecting the wired connection. No one in the house touched the router, wire, or computer at any point. The only way I can get internet is if I enable wireless. But being that the router is upstairs, the speed is slow.

I plugged the same wire into my laptop, and my laptop is detecting it fine. So now I know it's not a router or wire issue, it's my desktop. I don't understand why it would stop working out of no where. Any idea what to do?

I'm really not sure what happened, but when I turn my computer on it goes to a black screen and in white letters it says "Operating system not detected." If I press f8 it growls at me (sounds like it's trying to read something from the floppy drive) and just repeats the line. When I try to run the system with the recovery discs in the CD-drive it takes me to a black screen but shows no text, and the little orange light just stays on. I think I may need to boot from a floppy but I'm unsure how I would go about doing this. Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:My computer is not detecting the OS, recovery discs not working

what os do you have?
win 95 and win me cds are not bootable, you need a bootable floppy to boot with those cds.

to boot with a floppy you first need a 3.5" floppy disc and make it bootable.
if you have not done that then you need to find a friend that is running the same OS as you.
if you are running win95 then its going to be difficult to make a boot disc
win98 and ME it is simple.
start menu>control panel
open add remove programs then click the tab 'startup disc'
insert your floppy and click 'create disc'
viola one boot disc

win95 requires knowledge of creating config.sys and autoexec.bat files.
you will also need mscdex on your floppy and load it with the config.sys file
you configure it with the autoexec.bat file
it's been so long since i created a boot floppy for win95 that i have forgotten the particulars

I tried to install a cd burner and didn't turn out to fit but to open the side of the computer there is a fan and when you open up the cpu the fan disconnects and I can't connect it right I've unhooked the original cd drive and tried everthying with power and can't figure out because there is small 4 pin cords too that go with it. Is there anyone willing to help me over the phone? If you are please email me.

Answer:computer starts up but auto detecting not work

get documentation for your motherboard...that will tell you where that 4 pin connector goes...if it's small and black or brown it goes on the motherboard if it's white and big it goes to the power supply. other than that...never heard of a cd drive not fitting in a pc...what's your pc specs?

I am a newbie on using external / SATA harddrive. My new external drive worked perfectly at the beginning for weeks,
All of a sudden, I plugged the USB cord in again and the computer made that same "ding dong" sound to indicate some device has been plugged in but this time it is not showing the new drive letter.
I tried plugging it in my other computer that also runs Windows XP and the external harddrive also failed to show up as a drive letter under My Computer.

I right-clicked My Computer and selected Manage/Disk Management. The drive letter does not show up there neither.

The green light on the external hard drive is on. What is wrong with my hard drive?
There is a DC Power plug in outlet on the side. I'm not sure if I need to buy an AC Adaptor to plug it in to make it work since it didn't need an adaptor to work at the beginning.

Please help.
Thank you.

I have a Gateway computer. After having a new DSL box and their software installed, the computer does not detect the printer or camera memory card. I have talked online with 4 techs, they have all had me do the same thing (delete all USB and reinstall the printer software) and it has not corrected the problem. Any suggestions on what is the problem?

Answer:Computer not detecting printer or memory card

When there are USB issues such as yours, one of our local heroes, John Will provides this solution:

"First step, Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore. Create a restore point and name it something like "Before USB Fix". This is to bail you out if something goes wrong during the following process and makes things worse.

Create a file with NOTEPAD containing the following lines and save it as FIX.REG
-------------------------- Use text after this line --------------------------------

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment]

-------------------------- Use text before this line --------------------------------

Double click on FIX.REG and say yes to the Merge Into Registry question.

Unplug ALL USB devices.
Open Device Manager.
View, Show Hidden Devices.
Uninstall all devices under USB Controllers.
Uninstall all devices under Disk Drives that you know are not present.
Uninstall all devices under Storage Volumes. Say no to any reboot prompts until you are finished. Also, if a Storage Volume doesn't uninstall, ignore it and move to the next one.
If you have a yellow ? with unknown devices, uninstall all of the entries there as well.

When this is done, reboot TWICE.

Reconnect the USB devices and see if they're recognized properly.

NOTE: If you have a USB keyboard and/or mouse, you'll have to modify the instructions and l... Read more

Hello everyone. I bought a refurb computer for my girlfriend (See here) and set everything up but can't seem to get the audio to work. I tried plugging in a pair of speakers I had (Durabrand UC-280 2 Channel USB Computer Speakers) but no detection at all. The audio driver is AMD High Definition Audio Device and is up to date, working properly, but says it's an HDMI Device, I have no HDMI cables running from this computer at all, so I'm wondering if there's any way I can install a sound driver that will actually utilize the audio jack ports on this PC?

I'm not sure what brand of motherboard I have on it but it has:

Intel Core 2 Quad CPU
Onboard Audio
XFX One Radeon HD 5450 (bought separately and installed)
Windows 7 Professional 64-Bit

Sound doesn't work with my headphones either (I have tried all audio jack ports).

So any suggestions might help.

EDIT: The motherboard is not AMD and there are no default HDMI Ports, so I'm presuming that the Graphics Card Driver overwrote the default sound driver since it's the only device with any HDMI Output at all... how do I find out which driver I need to get for my sound card and then uninstall the one the graphics card added?

Answer:New Computer: Sound card not detecting speakers.

Here is the drivers, from the HP site. - Audio

The Audio is ADI High Definition. Reinstall that and see if it helps. The "Speakers" must be set as the default audio playback device for the headphones to work. Not sure about USB speakers, I don't use USB speakers, I use "standard" analog speakers.

I have a Sony VAIO that was new with Windows 8, updated to 8.1 and now to Windows 10.
It has never recognized the presence of my 2GB SD card in it's native slot on the side of the computer in any of the iterations of Windows I've installed.
However, the little amber idiot light next to the SD card slot does blink twice whenever I physically insert the card.
This same SD card (which I use in my Canon camera) works just fine in another VAIO I own.
I would appreciate any help in solving this problem. I've pulled my hair out in frustration looking for a solution online.
Thanks, Jim.

Answer:Windows computer not detecting or recognizing SD card

See if any of this helps:
Ensure that you are not using a SDHC card in an SD card reader.
Open Disk Management. You should see the Card drive on the right hand side. Assign a drive letter to it. Now check if it is detected in File Explorer. Uninstall and Reinstall the driver for 2.0 Card Reader
Run the Windows Hardware troubleshooter and Windows USB Troubleshooter.

The computer is not detecting the video adapter on the motherboard. It detects the ATI Radeon card. I ran Belarc Advisor and it shows the same thing. The system is a PowerSpec 6002. I will give more details if necessary.
Thanks for any ideas.

Answer:Computer is not detecting motherboard video adapter

I'll take a guess that the ATI Radeon is installed in a PCI or AGP slot on the main board? Are you trying to run both video adapters at the same time?

On all main boards that I am aware of, the installation of an addon video adapter will automatically disable the onboard adapter.

Hi all,Unfortunately my custom gaming computer does not seem to POST successfully. It does detect the CPU and RAM, however it takes longer than usual to actually find the IDE drives (I have 1 IDE drive [booting drive], and 1 SATA drive):I have a 86 GB IDE drive and a Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1TB SATA HDD.It doesn't seem to get past that stage and I've tried getting into the BIOS, however the computer says "Prepare to enter Setup" and stays like that. The XPressRecovery2 and Boot Menu do not seem to be accessible either. The motherboard used is the Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3LR.The CPU is an Intel Pentium D 805.The Ram is GeiL 2GB DDR2 667/800.I don't know what to do, other than check the connections of the drives to the motherboard. Before this occurred yesterday, I had made the mistake of using "Stand By" on my computer, then awakening it some hours later to find some of my data on the SATA drive was lost and the 3.3v,1.8v and 12.5v being 4.0v (thereby overvolted?).[Using Windows XP SP1]I quickly shut it down and tried to check if any connections were loose, then I switched it on again. Then these problems occurred.Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Answer:Computer stays as detecting IDE drives in POST.

Whatever drive you have your OS on leave that connected >dis connect the others and re boot. This is a check only for starters.

Answer:Computer suddenly stopped detecting lan connection

Hi -
Please open Internet Explorer > Click Tools along the top (if you do not see it, press the ALT key) > Go Internet Options > Connections > LAN settings > Make sure the only box ticked is Automatically Detect Settings > Click OK > OK
See if there is a connection now -

Hello everyone, new here and I have a problem. I'm trying to install a 320 gig Western Digital Hard Drive WD3200AAJB into my wife's new Dell 7100 XPS. It has all of her photography photos (a few years worth) on this hard drive, so it is extremely important to her and me as well.

Hope my terminology is somewhat accurate haha. I ordered this product to help me convert the old EIDE hard drive to a SATA connection: - Rosewill RC-204 IDE to SATA Mini Vertical Bridge (for IDE device)

And I also ordered this cable: - Vinpower Digital 26" SATA Cable With 1 Right Angle Connector And Metal Clip Model CAB90-180-L26(S)

I have the hd physically installed in the computer at the moment. Windows 7 is recognizing the hard drive in device manager as drive letter Q. However if I double click on it, it says that my access is denied. I also checked in the BIOS start up to detect it, and SATA port I and II are shown, but port III where the new drive is plugged in, is not detected.

We looked around but cannot find the install disk that came with the hd but I'm under the impression that I shouldn't necessarily need it? I tried the EIDE to SATA adapter on both jumper settings, with the hd set on slave jumpers. Go easy on me, my computer skills are lagging behind a bit haha.

I'm at a loss as to what to do next so any help or advice will be greatly appreciated. Heading to bed now, I will check this post tomorrow. Thanks for any help

Alright guys, so. I boot up my computer and things are running smoothly, everything is where it should be, and my day starts out fine. However, after a little bit, the hard drive disappears. I'm guessing the computer stops detecting it, though I don't know why. Note: This is a recent problem.. starting in the last month or so, though I've had my computer for about 7 months.

I'm far from technically savvy, so I kindly ask any advice isn't riddled with technical jargon.

Also, I don't know what y'all need to see in such a case like this, just wondering if any of you could possibly give me a hand here.

I woke my computer up a couple days ago, and nothing was being displayed on my screen. So I hard-restarted the computer, only for it to be he same. I then unplugged my HDMI cable from my graphics card port, and [plugged it into the motherboard's HDMI port, and the screen came on. The computer had booted to the desktop graphics card and was no longer detecting my AMD graphics card. I shut down my computer, removed my graphics card blew everything out and cleaned it all really good, then plugged it back in and rebooted the computer, but nothing had changed. No matter how many times I scan for changes in hardware in the device manager, it never detects my AMD XFX R7700 graphics card, and I've looked under every section, not just the display drivers section. I am aware that sometimes it can show up with a different name, but I have not seen any devices that it could be. I did a clean install of windows, and it's still the same. I uninstalled all my AMD drivers and tried to reinstall them, but they wont install because it wont detect any AMD hardware. What can I do to make my computer detect my graphics card? I have windows 10 64bit, and everything is up to date. My graphics card, and everything else has been working fine with windows 10 for several months, until now. I took an old geforce 430 out of my old computer and put it in, and the computer detected it just fine. So it's not the graphics card port or anything. My computer still will not detect ... Read more

Answer:My computer stopped detecting my graphics card.

Its quite possible that the chip that identifies the card in the PCI bus is blown on the card and so power and data/address lines are connected but no answer at the door and the system just walks on by after no answer to the next device as if its not there. If the video card is still under warranty i'd get it replaced for free, otherwise your looking at getting a new videocard or running the Geforce 430.*There is a very slim chance its related to power supply weakening.... but I feel its the card. If you have a known good power supply you can swap it out and see. I assume the 12V molex is connected, however the 12v could be too weak and cause this meanwhile the 430 is likely only powered through the PCI Express slot with molex not needed and thats why it runs. If the 12v is weak it should be also affecting hard drive etc unless your running SSD thats powered only from 5V etc.

Hey guys, I followed the link from my first thread *( and I have the appropriate logs etc.

Basically, my AVG detected a Trojan on my PC, I moved it to the Virus Vault, however it keeps popping up. I cannot find the file in my computer at all.

The 'symptoms' are that my PC is running slowly, and after a while it will just freeze completely making me have to manually turn it off.

Not sure if this is relevant or not, but as I finished the last scan (the GMER one) and saved the log, I got a 'blue screen' error that shut down my computer.

I have a Hewlett Packard Pavillion 500-424 desktop with Windows 10.
I bought an Epson Work Force WF=3620 wireless, multifunction printer.
I do not have a network with a router. The computer is connected to the
internet by cable and is not part of any network. The fire wall is off.

Epson support help me setup the printer's direct wifi signal. However, for some
reason it is not listed in the available wifi networks. When I click on the little
picture of a monitor in the lower right hand corner of my screen,
the window that opens

does not show my printer's wifi. Other networks in my area
sometimes show, sometimes not. In this screenshot, JESSIE-PC
NETWORK is showing. Sometimes 2-3 networks show, sometimes
nothing shows. It's just blank.

If I click on Network settings, it opens this:
As you can see, Jessies network is listed in Wifi2. If I click on manage wifi settings, I get:

Scrolling down, I see:

DIRECT-264EEE51 is my printer's wifi.

I've been on 9 phone calls with tech support this week, 5 with Epson, 3 with
Microsoft, & 1 with HP. They keep passing me around. The guy I talked to on
the second call with Epson got DIRECT-264EEE51 to appear in the wifi list on my
computer and we successfully printed a test page.

Three days later, when I tried to print something, it again was not listed & I could not

Answer:Computer Not Detecting Wireless Printer's Wifi Signal

Not being familiar with Epson devices nor with using the direct Wi-Fi of multi-function printers I have to ask: is the direct wireless signal broadcast continuously or does the Epson go idle after a time and turn off the wireless? If the latter, are you sure the signal is being broadcast all the times you try to detect it on your PC?

Please attach a screen shot of the Networks page (don't collapse the Radar, Connection or Signal History) of the Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector. If you need help with a screen shot see TSG Posting a Screenshot. FWIW to take screen shots with Windows Vista or latter I prefer to use the built-in Snipping Tool.

My computer has randomely been turning off suddenly, starting today. When I turn it back on and send the error report it says that it had trouble finding my harddrive. Not to mention, my other harddrive disapeared some time ago, could that be the harddrive being referred to? How could I help this? It suggest that I do the check disk thing but when I do that at the end it says that it can't go any longer in read-only mode. Could someone please help and possibly tell me howt o find my other harddrive again!

Answer:Computer SUddenly TUrning off + Trouble Detecting Harddrive

There could be several reasons for this. Please list the components in your computer (cpu, motherboard, all drives, power supply watts and brand name, get the picture) so we can get a better idea of what you have.

Has the drive that is lost worked before?

How long ago did the drive disappear?

Has the drive you are using ever displayed any other problems before now?

Are you using 80 connector cables for the hard drives?

Have you changed anything in the way of hardware recently?

Have you tried to swap the ribbon cable for the drive that works with the one that does not work?

Do you have another extra 80 connector cable to try a new one on this drive?

Oh, since it is just cutting out as you mentioned, try running this program so we can see the temps and voltages. It is free to download:

Speedfan will tell you the temperatures and a whole lot more. It's free

Post back with details and then we might be able to spot something that could cause your difficulty.

My computer goes to a black screen for about 2-3 minutes after Windows loads, instead of going straight to the windows logon screen. This just started happening all of sudden. I didn't install anything software or hardware wise, and did no big changes to my computer. About a couple weeks after it started doing this, my computer would get to the "Detecting IDE devices" part of the BIOS at bootup and freeze. It would be stuck at the screen. I have to turn off power completely to my computer and turn it back on in order to get it to finally detect. However, i do have to restart it like 4 or 5 times before this works. I don't believe the harddrives are the problem because they sound normal, and havent been touched. I dont think its the pins on my mobo either because it hasnt been touched so they should be fine. Thank you for anyone who helps with information on what the problem is and/or how i can fix it.
