Is there a default for User Permission settings?

Question: Is there a default for User Permission settings?

As a less than knowledgeable computer user I stupidly changed my User "Permission Allow" check marks. I now get a "failed to enumerate objects in the container. Access denied." Of coarse I didn't write down what was originally checked off in the "Allow" box.

Would there be a listing of default settings so I can recheck the 3 categories and boxes within them to original. "System", "My Name With email address", and "Administrators"?

Preferred Solution: Is there a default for User Permission settings?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'm not griping this time!

I've set up a limited account on my computer, and when I was testing it out, I noticed that I was able to manipulate the settings to the anti-virus program that's installed. How do I, using my administrator account, prevent the limited account from messing with it? I've hidden as many folders as possible, but the task bar icon is still visible and I can't hide it. And I can't right-click the task bar icon and mess with the security settings that way.

Answer:User account permission settings

Robwood,

The problem is more with your Internet Security software than with Vista. If you make the files for the Internet Security software inaccessible to a limited user - that software might not work properly for that user. Most Internet Security software (i.e. Norton, McAfee) allows you to install parental controls and give you the ability to control WHAT Windows users can or cannot do (including the manipulation of the software's settings).

What Internet Security Software are you using? Have you installed parental controls? Did you install the software while logged in as "Administrator"?

Let me know and I can probably offer more assistance.

Somehow, the user permission settings have been changed to 'everyone' and I cannot get access to

A) Regedit
B) Run as administrator
C) wmimgmt.msc nor

I have installed and run updated malwarebytes, also, cleaned %temp% and prefetch folders; What steps can I take to regain access to my computer? *I do not have the installation CD nor backup restore point.

Here are links I've used so far to solve these problems:

I have successfully configured my server to allow SSH connections using OpenSSH. I'm able to log in as an administrator and browse files by command line.

When I don't use UNC for my home directories (as I do with my domain under user accounts so I have a home directory) I am able to browse files within Filezilla.

The problem is that I *cannot* log into the SFTP site with an account if it does not have administrative rights. Is there a specific right that I need to grant to that user account using ntrights.exe? I'm baffled. So close, yet still so insecure.

I'm tempted to just use FTPS with Serv-U or something. Can't remember if that will run as a service.

Oh, I'm using Windows 2003, Enterprise Edition (MSDNAA)

Thanks in advance, and if you require any additional information, please let me know!

My next step will to be able to figure out how to apply virtual directories for my users.

--Fox

Edit: Oh, and yes, the users do have permission to access their home directories.

I find one user account name called "default user" in C:/documents and settings.

I wonder what it's all about.

Answer:what is default user in documents and settings

Whenever a new user logs on (the first time), Windows copies the settings from the Default User profile (located at Documents and Settings\Default User) to the newly created user profile. In other words, the Default User profile is as a template which Windows uses in order to initialize new profiles/logins.

Is there an easy way to have a profile for every user than logs on to a machine with the desktop, pinned programs, theme, wallpaper, and favorites already set?

In Windows XP all I did was set up a profile how I wanted it under Administrator, logged on to another administrator account, and copied the NTUSER.DAT file from the Administrator to override the one in Default User. After that I logged back into Administrator to delete all the other user accounts. This doesn't seem to work with Windows 7, and there is both "Default" and "Default User" profiles.

Answer:Default user profile settings

I'd like to figure this out as well. I have this tutorial I haven't been able to try yet.

"I got this to work, but it's no where near as elegant as with XP and Vista via the User Profile "copy to" method above:

Customize a user profile as needed
Go to Control Panel and create a new dummy admininstrator
Reboot, log in as the dummy admin
Browse to C: and go into the Folder settings and Show all hidden/system files
Browse to C:\Users and CTRL-drag the Default folder to make a second (backup) copy of it
Browse to C:\Users and CTRL-drag the customized user profile to make a second copy of it
SHIFT-DEL the original Default folder
Rename the customized folder copy to Default
Create a new dummy admin and reboot/log in to test it

I've not tested this extensively yet but this seemed to work with the exception that the desktop background pic was gone leaving a black background. I fixed this easily by re-selecting the correct background pic.

I really hope that MS restores the previous method as this seems very sketchy to me and I'd hate to have to use this in a production environment"

I deployed a refirb windows xp pro box to a remote site. I needed to push a default setting for the VPN to all future users so I copied a profile to the default profile. This did not work as expected. Now all users who login, when they launch outlook, they are defaulted to attaching to the work Exchange 2003 mailbox.

The manual fix is easy, however I have users there 24/7 and need it so anyone who jumps on it can use it properly... So I need to find a way to make it so it will find the correct mailbox for the current user logging in.

So users are using a Windows XP Pro loaded with Microsoft office 2003.

First off, let me tell you what resources I have and what I'm trying to accomplish. My company has close to 500 PC users and I've designed a Zenworks application to create their local accounts for them when they signon to Novell. Simple. The problem is that we have some older PC's here and instead of going in each user's profile to set Windows' GUI to best performance, I'd like to have a script or default scheme/theme to do this automatically. Basically, I want to apply all the optimal adjustments I could do in GPEDIT to every user. Any help would be appreciated.

Peace on earth, goodwill towards all.

I moved my default user folders (Documents, Music, Pictures, Video) from C to a different partition by using the Location tab. This successfully moved the folders and their contents to the new partition.

I can see the folders and contents in the new partition. The folders no longer exist on C and %USERPROFILE% points to the new partition.

And yet, when I go into Settings > System > Storage I see "New documents will save to This PC (C" and the same for the other folders.

Obviously, I want those folders to be on the new partition. How do I make Settings understand that I already moved these folders with the Location tab?

Answer:Moved Default User Folders With Location Tab, But Settings is Unchange

Take the drop down arrow next to the save location and choose the drive you want them to be on.

I run windows xp and have user accounts for myself, my wife and the 2 children. Both my wife's account and mine are set as administrators.

This morning both my wife and I logged on to our accounts and all was fine. We then logged off and shut down the PC. This afternoon my wife logged on and her entire account has been wiped. None of her settings or documents are there. The language had changed back to US (meaning the keyboard typed like a US one which it did when we first installed windows XP), her outlook was not configured, the IE webpage was not set to the homepage she created, all docs gone from my documents folder. It was as if the account had just been created.

When she first logged in a small grey box came up on the top left of the screen that said something like "trying to connect to..." or "searching for..." and then a larger grey box came in the middle and she cannot remember what this said. She was worried it was some sort of virus so after a few minutes of nothing happening, and trying to log into her email which asked for outlook to be set up, she shut down.

Both my account and the kids accounts have all their settings as they should. All my wife's docs have gone but all shared docs still remain.

I have mixed permissions on Windows 10 from trying to back one windows.old file and windows-bt. I added "Everyone" to the user names and groups list but there's a red icon on the administrator account with an X it has "Special Permissions" I haven't found a single thing I couldn't do on the computer I was even able to update and play games on it.
1.How bad is this and how vulnerable is my computer? Again I haven't found anything I couldn't do or any errors and I'm the only one that uses this laptop. It does have kasperky.
2. What's the safest way to undo these changes? I found a method for it using the cmd but it's seems risky from the mixed results I read from other users and I don't want to make things worst than they already are if they're bad.
3. How do I know what profile I'm using and what permssions it has? I'm aware that I'm using a local account on windows 10, but when I check the users in the task manager I see the original name from before I changed it. Is there a way to switch to the administrator (not the hidden one) account? and is there a way to make my local account an administrator?
4. What is the interactive account? because I'm also seeing that in user names and groups ever since I made the channges.
5. What's the difference between the administrator and the administrators accounts?

I currently have Firefox, IE and Edge installed on my PC. Firefox is set as the default browser. When I go into the default apps setting screen and click to change my default browser, only IE and Firefox are on the list, so I can't select Edge.

However, if I click the "Reset" button to reset all of the default apps, Edge becomes the default browser, but obviously that resets all of my other default apps too, which is a pain. As soon as I choose either IE or Firefox as my default browser, I am unable to select Edge again as it's not on the list, so all I can do is hit "Reset" again.

What's also strange is that if I right-click on a HTML file and choose "open with", Edge doesn't appear anywhere on that list either.

I've tried the system file checker, but it said that everything was fine. With Edge not being something that I can uninstall and reinstall, I don't know how I can go about fixing this.

Anyone got any ideas? Thanks.

Could use some help on how to allow a user to set their default browser permanently even with IE11 being set via Group Policy as the usual default.

For logistical reasons, we are still on IE11 instead of using Edge for our default browser - mostly because our software hasn't been 100% tested with Edge and to avoid overall confusion in having made the jump as a company to Windows 10 recently.

I successfully created a default configuration associations .xml file and it is pushing IE11 as the default.

However, knowing we have some users who would like to use a browser other than IE11 and let it be their default, we're trying to accommodate them while still enforcing the policy in place. Additionally, we don't want to 100% dissuade users from
utilizing Edge, so we haven't tried removing it from public visibility within the OS.  The users in question are local admins on their machines and should, in theory, be allowed that capability.

Any suggestions?

Hello,

The constant need for administrator permission and the need to run everything as administrator is something that frustrates me endlessly in windows. I'm talking about thinks like copy pasting, name change or the need to run cmd as administrator for some commands. I've always managed to turn this off somehow in previous windows versions, but i cant seem to find a solution for windows 10.

To be clear, this is what i'm talking about:

In this case, windows is telling me i need to give extra permission to change the name of a shortcut to a game....

I've already turned of the UAC:

And my account in an admin account:
I saw that you can enable the real admin account in windows 10, but that account doesn't seem to be build for regular use. Some programs wont run, like Office and AVG. So using that account isn't an option.

I don't want to change the options for every new folder or shortcut, or right click run as admin everything, i want everything to be done as admin by default.

I know it isn't safe, but i don't care. I really hate windows asking me if i really want to change the name of a shortcut.

Can someone help me with this? Thanks in advance!

Hi, An observation, not a question. I wanted to set Thunderbird as my default email client again (after having reset defaults whilst looking for a problem).

So I set it as my default email client in 'System', 'Default Apps'.

This proved not to be the same as using Control Panel, Default Programs, and setting it as handling all file types it could.

(In particular, the first still did not mean Pop Peeper would find a client it could launch, whilst the second did).

I'm wondering if this will prove the same for other programs.

Answer:'Settings' Default is not= Control Panel 'Default Programs' - All

Hi,
Yeah, you may think this seems like just a normal message from oc'ing too much, but a problem-I haven't overclocked anything! It booted to that point, then my hard drive went mad clicking and crashed. This was after it being turned on and off to see if my graphics card was booting because I had no video, but it turned out I had just been downright stupid and plugged it into the onboard graphics. Anyone know what could have happened? Thanks

P.S. would the power drawing thing (molex on my case fan) need to have a seperate connector or just draw power from another device? Thanks.

Answer:'Previous overclock settings failed, default settings enabled'

If this happens just once then I wouldn't worry about it too much but the PSU or HDD could have something to do with it.

You can connect a molex connector fan to its own power connector or you can put it on an optical drive's connector for example, but it's ok to do either as they don't use much power.

As of today, in our domain environment consisting of Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 Enterprise machines, we are experiencing the "User Profile service failed the sign-in - User profile cannot be loaded" error message whenever a user tries to login.
This only affects users new to the particular machine. If they have signed on before and already have a cached account the computer logs them in with no issue. This is occurring on both Win8.1 and Win7 machines. We are an academic institution so this is becoming
a huge problem in our labs. Students generally use different computers so this is popping up very frequently. I have a solution for the issue. It appears that on the non-working machines that the "Default" user profile is corrupt. I have discovered
that if I find a machine, Win8.1 or Win7, doesn't matter, that is allowing first time users to logon I can copy the "Default" user profile and replace the corrupt one. I must first permanently delete the corrupt profile before copying over the new
one. I am doing this over the network by navigating the C:\users\ folder. Even this way is becoming cumbersome though as we have over 1000 computer in labs. I have googled and googled and I keep seeing the same answers offering various solutions, none which
are any more practical than my method. I cannot find information on a cause or a reason of why this would just crop up out of nowhere. I suspect maybe a Windows update but I cannot verify that yet. ... Read more

It seems that when a new file is renamed, the phrase "New Folder" is actually being deleted, thereby requiring "Deletion" capability. But a user can also delete anything else with this permission, which is bad news. Is there away around this bug?

While my WD Portable External Hard Drive was connected to my work computer, I changed the permissions on a particular folder so that only I had access to it. (I was lending it to someone else but didn't want then to have access to this particular folder).

2 hours later I was told my services were no longer required, pack up all my things and leave. Unfortunately, I forgot to reset the permissions before I left, and now when I try to access the folder on my home PC, I get 'Access Denied'.

I realise it was stupid to mess about with the permissions (especially when I don't know that much about them), but is there anyway to take ownership of this folder to gain access to the contents?

Both work and home PC are XP. Work is 64 bit. Home is 32 bit. Permissions were set up on work PCs, but not on home.
And no, there's no chance of me gaining access to my work PC again.

Answer:Need to Override Permission Settings

Did you adjust the permissions or did you try taking Take Ownership of the folder

Hi, I am having a problem where my trackpoint settings are not being kept. Every couple of days I need to go back to the control panel and readjust the sensitivity of the trackpoint leading me to believe that this happens when the machine either goes to sleep or is shut down. The driver is up to date and I am using the T400 machine. Any help is greatly appreciated. Cheers

Hi!

I`m looking into creating a custom domain-wide default user for my company, but we have two major types employees depending on their tasks (this means - Software A is used by employee A and not by employee B and the other way around). In the Active Directory they are (of course) separated into OUs and Groups.

So I was wondering is it possible to create two default user profiles and somehow link them to a OU or Group in Active directory?

is there a way to go back to the default settings for access/permissions on a computer? My computers have been changed permissions so many times by my software people that it doesn't work well and I am always denied access or having an issue or kicked off
something? I hate when they change my settings on my computer. So can I reset or change back my computer to the original access/ permissions default setting?
Thanks

I've read it prevents unauthorized access, I have two questions. Is it pointless not setting up a password for it, since I guess anyone can just click on ok or continue to do their thing?

How does this eliminate getting infected by viruses in any way? Thanks.

Before I started in my current position, all users were added as administrators of their local machines.

I am in the process of removing these permissions, but I have one question:

Whenever I add the "Domain Users" to the list using MYDOMAIN\Domain Users, after the next reboot, the "Domain Users" setting is no longer appearing.

Any ideas?

Can you rephrase the question?

Where are you adding this group?

Hey everyone
I was wondering if it is possible to make a specific user (such as Guest) and change it's user permissions. For instance, right now, Guest can do the usual stuff but not access any folders other than its own My Documents. What I want to do is configure it so it is not able to use certain applications, click properties for the desktop, etc.

Anyone know how?

Try using system restore to reset the settings. If not, create a new user account with administrator priveleges and delete the old one.

You won't be able to assign permissions to the specific computer. Instead you will need to add the person's user account to the permission list.

When I try to delete certain files that I downloaded (intentionally or not) that I want off my system, I am told I need to get permisson to do this. I am the only user who has ever been on this system. I should have complete access as I am the sole system administrator. I believe these files that I cannot delete, DivX player, which I did download and an unwanted antivirus program "FileCure," which I did not download and has caused me many problems before, are causing all sorts of problems on my system, including a background task running audio of ads and news (a radio station?) which I cannot get rid of. How do I reassert complete control of my system and delete these files. (76 people have viewed my other post here for help with that audio problem and other problems. No suggestions yet. When I try to do certain things(like adding the new task of explorer.exe or control panel to uninstall things) on my computer, even under the administer user, it gives me the message.... You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the file.

I had problems after logging in on my computer. It only gives me my background + mouse cursor.

I've tried the UPDATED 8-step Viruses/Spyware/Malware Preliminary Removal Instructions. For step 4, when I try running the install file for malawarebytes, it lists it under processes but not applications. It doesn't show the install screen for it.

I just recovered a friend's laptop using the built in hardware recovery console. (hp hidden recovery partition)

Now the all the folders inside his documents and settings forlder are inaccessible. At first his entire user folder was completely inacessible but i went into safe mode and shanged the security settings/permissions to allow for administrator and his user name access. Now I can get into the user folder but I cannot get inside the folders inside the folder.

When I try to change the security settings of the folder it gives me some kind of "you will be unable to change the security settings" message.

Please help, I am at my wit's end.

I recently re-installed Windows 7 and all of a sudden I was having access denied problems which had never occurred before.
I have managed to fix all of these apart from one:-
When I try to change the icon via the properties of a desktop item I get:-
"you will need to provide administrator permission to change these settings"
I am the only user of the PC and my account is an administrator account.

As I said, I never had this problem prior to the re-install.
I have searched and searched but have yet to find any answers or solutions.

Any help or info would be helpful.

Answer:need to provide administrator permission to change these settings

Turn off your user account settings in user accounts.

control panel>user accounts>change user account control settings

I always set mine to never notify.

You will have to reboot to make changes.

Greetings,
I have been working with programs such as Blender 3d recently which conflict with my security settings. I have been getting permission denied for saving files and doing other functions in these programs. I found out how to disable the administrator setting by going in command prompt and typing "net user administrator /active no" and how to keep the computer from constantly bringing up warnings asking me to allow a change to my computer by going in user account settings and sliding the slider to zero. It seemed to be working untill I took the slider back up so that I could have some security enabled while on the internet, and then even when I took the slider back down it was still the way it was before, not letting me save my files on some programs and bringing up messages asking me to allow myself to run a program I had clicked on. I tried bringing up the command prompt and re-disabling the administrator setting and also made sure the slider was down all the way, to no effect. I was trying to do a system restore to restore whatever is screwing this up, but an error comes up everytime telling me it can't access a file possibly because of antivirus being on, even though I already turned all the security features off. Any way I could have missed something that I did right the first time but not the second?
Thanks!

I have my OS settings configured not to check for and install updates unless I prompt Windows to do so. I recently manually installed some updates. A few days later I noticed Windows was installing updates upon start up. I checked my update settings and sure enough they were set for everything to check and install updates automatically. What is going on here? I never noticed this kind of behavior with Vista or Windows 7.

Has anyone else noticed this or have a way to truly stop automatic updates?

I think I've screwed myself up into a corner. I really need help as Google is not bringing up anything that might help.
What happened is I tried to adjust the security setting for my whole external hard disk.
I have the admin rights to my computer and wanted to restrict a user to be able to read and execute only. I right clicked the drive (L:\) and adjusted the EVERYONE group.
What I didn't know was EVERYONE included the admin too. So now I've blocked myself from editing the files and folders in the external. Now I see all accounts have the special permission part unticked.
And if I check the properties of a folder in the hard disk I see an account with the special permission allowed
In a fit of panic I accidentally removed the account with special permission privilege from my hard disk properties so I don't see it when I check the properties of my hard disk but I can see the account when I check the properties for the individual folders.
For awhile I had access denied when I tried to enter the drive but now I can enter but still am restricted (can't delete folders, etc)

How do I rectify this mess I'm in?

Answer:File Permission Settings for External Drive

Through further googling, I've discovered 'taking ownership' so it's all settled now.

Since upgrading to Windows 10 only one of my scheduled tasks seems to work.

I cannot edit a current task or create a new one as I get the following error message:

"Task scheduler cannot apply your changes. The user account is unknown, the password is incorrect, or the user account does not have permission to modify the task."

It does not matter if I start the scheduler from the command line or normally ( I have tried "Run as administrator").

Been at this for days and tried searching using different search terms hoping to find an answer.

I even tried changing my Time Zone (although I do not have the half hour difference that has been causing issues for others).

The latest updates were carried out yesterday and they included a Task Scheduler update

Only changes I have made to the system since the Win 10 upgrade is that Avast AV would not let Win 10 work properly so I uninstalled it and I am now using 360 Total Security. I also had to reinstall my printer drivers.

Anyone able to help?

Cheers,

Henry

It has to be something with user permissions.  o to control panel, then user accounts and see what you can find regarding what permissions regular users are allowed.  Changing the accounts to have administrator privledges this way should fix your problem, (but will give them full control over the computer)

Hi All,

This is my first post here. I am trying hard to solve this permissions problem on my own--with lots of research, but I am truly stumped and I hope you can help.

Here is the overview:

I have FIVE PC's networked to a server, FOUR of them through Homegroup and FIFTH PC outside Homegroup. I want to exclude the FIFTH PC from all folders on the FOUR PC's and FOUR of the FIVE folders on the server. The FOUR PC's will have everything BUT Full Control access to the FIVE other folders on the server, but the FIFTH PC will be totally excluded from FOUR of those folders. with everything BUT Full Control over the FIFTH folder. These FIVE folders are on the "J" drive on the server, under a parent folder called "Network Shared Folders."

I learned that if you, or a group you belong to, have share permissions AND NTFS rights, you can browse into the share. I also learned that if you, or the group you belong to, are ONLY on the NTFS, you cannot browse into the share AND you cannot access any folders beneath the share, even if you have rights to them. The two other applicable rules: 1) when combining NTFS permissions and share permissions, the most restrictive effective permission applies and 2) permissions are combined when a user is not explicitly denied access. Finally, you should avoid using the "Deny" permission if possible.

When I set the share and NTFS permissions according to those rules, I either get all the PC's excluded from the fol... Read more

Permission is just my newest trouble! My computer crashed some weeks ago, & I never received a solution; I have Windows 7 Home Premium on, 32 bit, on a Toshiba Satellite laptop. It replaces one that was stolen from me; no frills is fine, but I have had many troubles!

I am in exams online in grad school, so did not do my Performance Monitor/Error checking or anything, just working on schoolwork. But as I worked with reports, etc., I realized that all files in "My Documents" were also in (at least!) two other places: Public Documents and Pictures --

I went right to trying to move them, they were marked "Read Only", and I wasn't able to gain permission to ,make changes or move my files out of Public Documents, where they were "shared" & I was blocked from hitting "stop sharing" -- "didn't have the authority". When I realized they were also in Pictures, and set up as "Share" items, I was sickened; my very private documents on my computer system, & I didn't have the right to move my own files!

I am the Administrator, and I am the Owner; I live alone and nobody has used my laptop. *When I wrestled to restore my Permissions, I might make the changes, and "SYSTEM" seemed to be "in charge" -- my Full Control permissions were faded out, & when I would restore them, I could not click "Apply". Now unable to change permissions, or properties, I went to search for ... Read more

I have networked an xp pro desktop with a Vista business laptop.
For some of the shared folders of the XP box, I want to set the permission to include a specific user from the networked vista machine.
When I go to the folder Properties / Security / Permission / Select Users or Group and click on Locations, all I see is the XP box, so I cannot select any specific user (i.e. restrict to the administrator) from the Vista laptop.

I created a user with the same name on the Vista and XP machine but any xp machine Doc or Excel file I open from Vista appears as Read Only in Word and Excel, even if I transfer ownership to the XP user that bears the same name as the Vista user. Strangely, the property of the file does not show read only when checked from xp or vista explorer. But I can't save from my laptop onto the xp machine shared folders. So, something is wrong in my config but I have no idea what...

Note:
The 2 machines are communicating fine and I am able to exchange files between them.

Hello Thumb Welcome to the Ten Forums!

You may have to consider enabling the remote access feature in 10 on the Netbook as well as the main in order to gain access to the mobile unit or suffice by using a 3rd party program called Team Viewer used here on VMs as well as two desktops and laptops. First to look at the guide for how to set up the RDC(Remote Desktop Protocol). RDC - Connect Remotely to your Windows 10 PC - Windows 10 Forums

With the Team View program free for home use I have 10 Home and Pro VMs connecting to the two 10 Pro/7 Ultimate and 10 Pro/7 Pro dual booted desktops as well as several VMs including Server 2016 DataCenter evaluation build on VM. You can transfer files and folders by remote web access. The RDP however is what you will need to be looking at for a closed home network(hard wired by ethernet cables) while the Main to Netbook of course could use a little help?

What I am trying to do is map all the user permissions on a shared drive.
This includes who has access to what subfolder and etc.
Now, I could go through this manually, but that would take weeks being that its a 60GB share.
Also, I have to add group permission now and then to certain folders etc.

Does anyone know of a program that will map user permissions (group) of each folder on the drive?

Answer:Mapping User Permission on a Shared Drive

Is the file structure heirarchical? If so you can just set sub folders to inherit permissions from the parent. I usually base share permissions on group membership. I create groups in the form of [servername]_[sharename]_[rwx]. I then provide those groups with access to the share. The only thing needed from that point is to add the required individuals to the group. It's much easier to keep track of this way and you don't have to wait forever on huge shares that propogate security settings to a million child folders everytime membership changes.

I installed XP on a friend's computer onto a fresh hard drive, leaving his old one on the same IDE channel (it's an old computer), but I just made one master and one slave.

When we went to try and move over his user folder from the old hard drive, it gave us the ol' 'Permission Denied'. I'm being told by a few of my other tech friends that you need to set the security permission for the folder, but I don't really know if that's the solution. I activated the Security tab on all folders, but I haven't tried to mess with it because I don't rightly know what to do.

If anyone has a solution so my friend can get his files off his old user folder, I would be very grateful.

Thanks, guys.

Answer:[SOLVED] User Folder - Permission Denied

Welcome back to TSF

You need to take ownership of the files.

BOOT INTO SAFE MODE FIRST IF USING XP HOME

You can find out how to take ownership of a file/folder here:

Well, I am totally baffled (and it takes a lot to baffle me!). I want to share the My Documents folder from an XP machine with ONLY one user (the administrator) on a networked Win 7 machine. I have turned off simple sharing on the XP machine. I hate XP!! So complicated to do anything. Anyway, under security, I have tried share this folder, and not to share folder. I have gone into Advanced and messed around with permissions, taking out Everyone, using Admin only, using Network. At one point I ended up not being able to access My Documents on the local computer and had to jump through many hoops to change ownership and disable read only so that the user could use her own files!

The problem is, under Advanced in the permissions area, I cannot see the users on the remote pc to choose which one should be allowed access. I have read countless help suggestions, but none of them tell me how to actually find a particular user on the Win 7 pc and give ONLY that user permission to read (not to change) the files in My Documents on the XP pc. Can anyone give me a step by step process to do this? I work on computers all the time (I am a computer consultant) so it is embarrassing that I cannot set up this seemingly simple situation. Ugh!

Answer:Set permission for just one remote user to share a folder

1. Find out the name of the account on the remote machine (you may have to ask the owner of it).
2. Add a new account on the XP with the same name as on the Windows 7.
3. Give the desired permissions to that newly created account.

EDIT: It's simplest if you use the same password on both machines. Else you'll need to tell the Windows 7 account owner the XP's password.

Hello forum. I am an administrator with 3 limited users on a windows 8 machine. I have installed a game on my account that I want to let one of my users play. I have tried everything I have read about giving permissions, admin right etc, but it still asks for my password everytime he opens the game? I'm at a loss...thank you for your time

Answer:How to give admin permission to limited user

Hello Scott,

You might see if creating an elevated shortcut of the game that standard users can use to run the game elevated without getting an UAC prompt for your password may help.

Since this is for a game and not a normal program, there's no guarantee that this will work though.

I have got two PCs win2003 and XP,,,,,PCA and PCB (both PCs on my LAN through my linksys router WAG54G V2).

I created a folder on PCA (win2003), called "My Stuff",,,I created many users on PCA (employees, jsmith, test1, test2), I enabled sharing for the folder "My Stuff", and I gave permission (read only) to the username "employees" only, I deleted the username "Everyone" which is by default there.

1- From PCB (XP) , I opened run, then I typed in : \\192.168.1.64-----for win2003
2- Screen poped up (first time), I typed in the username:jsmith (not employees), the password:newsletter.
3- I was able to see "My Stuff", since it is shared folder, but I could not access, since jsmith has not been given permission to access it (only username "employees" has been given permission to access it ).
4- After that (second time, third time,,,etc), when I try to type in: \\192.168.1.64, I will be forwarded to a window with "My Stuff" folder (PCB still remember the previous session for username "jsmith"), I was not able to type in the username: test1, password: forum (because I have not greeted with a pop up screen!!!!),,,,,,,,,,What should I configure to let the (PCB) provides me with the pop screen for the new username (employees) ?

Hello all- I have researched this problem I have and cannot find a definitive solution. I have some external hard drives I use to store pictures movies, etc. Many of the folders and files that have been put on the drives are just wasting space and I would like to delete them. Problem is when I try to delete the laptop tells me I need permission to perform the delete. When I go to that folder and pull up the properties to get the security tab to edit the user permissions... I highlight any of the accounts (including the administrator account) and it does not allow me to add, remove, click on full control to allow full control, etc. Those functions are grayed out and will not allow me to change them so that I can have full permission rights and delete the folders on the hard drive. It is very annoying and in time the hard drive will be near full and I will have all those unwanted folders and files taking up space.

I have noticed that all the external drives I plug into my laptop show them to be in the shared state and it shows a tiny icon on top of the drive letter of two people's upper torso and head standing next to each other.

Does anyone know how to fix this or get access permission rights for these external drives.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

object name is rejected with an error message. I assumed the dialogue simply wanted the
name of the file but it doesn`t seem to matter how I phrase it, the dialogue says it can`t find the object.

Can anyone help ? I have looked everywhere for an answer but the subject is never discussed.

Exactly where does it gives an error? And what error message it shows? What "object" are you trying to enter the name of?

I'm trying to set-up a PC for a friend with multiple user accounts. This isn't something I've done before. I've set up a series of Limited User accounts for her children, but have come across a couple of problemsI wanted to set up a custom Default User account and followed the instructions given in Microsoft Knowledgebase article 319974 click here;en-us;319974This presented a problem since new user accounts, which adopt the new Default User profile, inherit the location of the copied account?s My Documents and Outlook profile, but don?t have permission to access them. This means that new users can?t use Outlook. The second problem was with Norton AntiSpam, which adds a plug-in to Outlook. However, when a user opens Outlook for the first time, after a different user has been logged in previously, they are given the following error message:Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime LibraryRuntime Error!Program: ...\OUTLOOK.EXEabnormal program terminationThe only Solution I have found has been to disable the plug-in and switch off AntiSpam. Symantec haven?t been able to suggest anything else and this seems like it a common problem. Can anyone suggest any solutions to either of these?

We have gone to SBS2008 and are now running in a domain (was peer to peer).

Naturally to do this I logged in as normal joined a DOMAIN, rebooted, and logged in with the proper domain user account and password.

Is there any way to copy the settings from that local account to the new DOMAIN log in user account?

I normally use a little program called outback plus which backups all this stuff and the ie settings/cache/etc - same for the firefox stuff and then I can restore that wherever I want -- however that only seems to be working on a few of the comps. 3 of them in fact the files will not restore -- no idea why and no google search has uncovered the answer so I am looking for an alternative.

I am stuck big time and need to finish this asap as everyone comes back to work tomorrow at 8:30am

Thanks in advance if you can help.

what OS?
roaming profiles or standard local-only profiles?

either way if XP,
System Properties -> Advanced -> User Profiles Settings -> select local account, "Copy To" select new domain account profile folder as destination.

or use something like User Profile Wizard by ForensIT.
I've used it several times before and it worked flawlessly for me.

Hi

Client of mine has got windows 2008 server as a standalone PC (no domain) with username: server and password : fake

And he has 5 other PCs (XP Profe SP3) on the same LAN

PC1, username : forum1,password : work1

PC2, with username: forum2, password:work2

PC3, with username: forum3, password:work3

PC4, with username: forum4, password:work4

PC5, with username : forum5, password:work5

Windows 2008 has got a folder to be shared with PC1, PC2, PC3,,,,not PC4 nor PC5

I know how to share the folder if I use option “Everyone” Under Properties > Sharing > Advanced Sharing > Permissions > Add > Everyone ,,,,,,and I know how to use the option “Public Folder” which is located %SystemDrive%\User\Public

With “Everyone” option PC4 and PC5 would be able to get access to the shared folder
Now my question if I do not want to use "Everyone" option , I have to create additional three local accounts on the server which are ( username : forum1,password : work1 ) and ( username: forum2, password:work2 ) and ( username: forum3, password:work3 )

Those username then will be able to login to the server which I do not want that to happen. Is this what suppose to be in such scenario ?

Thanks

I have been going nuts with this. For the past 3 days I have been getting messages saying I do not have permission to write in directories where I am listed as the owner. I have ensured that the users MyuserID, Administrators, and SYSTEM all have Full control over the directory. I have also made sure that the parent directories also give these users full control. I could live with this and just escalate my privileges each time I create a file. However I run some apps that need to write into some of these directories and they cant. I have checked that the application process is run under my userID and has the need permission, however it still can not write to these directories.

Is this a known bug that has recently been created? Is there some new Group or User that needs to be given permission to modify the directory. This seems to be a problem on some machines, but not others. Any help would be much appreciated. Since this just started without any changes by me, I am assuming that some Windows update is the cause.

Answer:File and Dir security permission settings not taking effect

Welcome to the Ten forums.

Have you check your Update history. Are any updates failing?

While I can't comment on known bug, others may have more info, do you have restore points enabled? If so would you consider invoking system restore as you seem to have a handle on when it started.

Obviously updates will simply re-initiate. You may consider changing what updates you receive. Make it just windows and do not included other products (ie., drivers). This will rule out drivers or "Other" patches.

Do you use any software to Image your OS / Data? If not, a number of individuals on this forum recommend Macrium Reflect. You may also want to review the tutorial section. Macrium is free to home users. It is easy to use and can quickly get you back to a known working system.

As title.

I've begun to use TeraCopy, which is much better than the stupid Win7 copy handler. There's just one problem:

When TeraCopy moves a file from a user-owned folder to a public folder, it retains folder's user-level permissions. I can manually give access to Everyone for this folder, but it is very annoying.

So, I'm looking for a way to easily remove a folder's own permission settings and make it use only inherited permissions.

TIA

I'd like a brief tutorial, or a link to a page where I might be able to accomplish a little more restrictive environment. I understand the basic logic for what I want to accomplish, yet I can't get it to work. Here's my scenario:

Through Active Directory, I want to set a global group of users with restricted access to certain settings and programs, namely Remote Desktop Connection (I had a separate thread that dealt with comp. sci. students using the RDC to bypass the web filter). I can go around each computer and disable the RDC remotely, but I'd like to set it up to where every account name takes on the security/permission settings.

As a note: At my college, the accounts are set up to where even the desktop background is reset after logout. We have a tiny problem with kids changing the mouse cursors and backgrounds here. Any suggestions on how to accomplish this?

Thanks in advance.

The network environment is a Workgroup consisting of Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows 7 Pro, and Windows XP Pro.

My example:
I have enabled Guest account in the Windows Server 2008 R2 computer.
I have created a new folder "guestshare" in c: and use Share with menu to add Guest with Read/Write Permission Level.

When I try to map it in the Windows XP Pro machine thru Map Network Drive function under Tools menu, I won't see that share using the Browse button. However, I can type the UNC path and map it.

If I turned off the Password Protected Sharing in the Windows Server 2008 R2 computer, I will see that share using the Browse button and able to map it. What is the reason for this behavior?

I wonder whether the following settings in Advanced sharing settings of Windows Server 2008 R2 can affect mapping:

File and printer sharing
Public folder sharing

Since mapping a drive requires authentication, is there any settings in User Right Assignments and Security Options of Local Policy that can affect mapping? For example, I wonder about the following settings:

User Right Assignments
Access the computer from the network
Allow log on locally
Deny access to this computer from the network
Deny log on locally

Security Options
Accounts: Limit local account use of blank passwords to console logon only
Network access: Shares that can be accessed anonymously
Network access: Sharing and security model for local accounts

Dear Forum,

I am currently trying to move files and folders to my 1TB External Hard Drive (Seagate) - for reasons known to some members of this forum.

I am gaining the message 'File Access Denied' when I move mostly Adobe files to my external hard drive.

I am going to try and go through and see if I have taken the steps on taking Ownership - incorrectly and I do not know how to fix it.

The recycle bin has an error on it as I took the permission on the folder on the external hard drive 'It says that is corrupt'.

I am a total mess and unsure about the settings.

I know that this is mainly a Windows 7 Forum - but I wish just to see if someone would be able to assist me

Upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 some months ago. Original profile did not require password to log in, and was not associated with a Google email or Microsoft account that I know of.

I added a user a couple of days ago (added a personal account of mine with my own password from my laptop) because software problem said try another user, and this laptop computer didn't have any other users. So I added one.

That was a mistake. After I "added a user" I could ONLY log on the computer with the NEW user. The old one, the profile, all the settings, the playlists, everything was gone. Like it never existed. There was and is no option to log on as the original. The computer became an extension of my laptop, with zero other option.

I had to add a third user and give it admin capabilities just to remove my laptop profile (which I didn't really want on this computer, I was just adding a user to "try another user" with a software problem). But all my original settings seem gone.

I can see additional users in Windows Media Player for instance, but it says I need permission to access those. Since it is impossible to log on as any other user except this latest (and third) user. I can't give myself permission to access those old playlists.

Adding a user should come with a warning.

If anyone has any ideas where I can recover the old settings, I'd be grateful. The threads I've seen around the web and here have directed to Windows 7 workarounds which do not work... Read more

Hello and welcome to the TenForums

It might be worth finding out all the users that are associated with your PC. To do this open a command prompt (right click on the Start button) and then type in the following command wmic useraccount list full

This will display all users on your system (including hidden ones) and if you paste the results here we can determine which accounts are still present. If you want to see more details of this process look in the tutorial: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/3...dows-10-a.html
