How to get File Explorer to sort folders and files together?

Question: How to get File Explorer to sort folders and files together?

Currently I can only get all folders sorted and then all files sorted. I'd like to get them to sort together. Specifically this is for my Movies drive, which has thousands of films... most are in folders, but some are just files.

I searched here and elsewhere, but did not find any answers specifically for Win10. I also tried Xplorer2 and tried to sort by 8.3 Name, but that still did not work. My ideal solution would not include 3rd party software.

I'm open to modifying system files if need be, I just do not have the technical skills to do it without a tutorial.

All assistance is appreciated. Thank you!

Preferred Solution: How to get File Explorer to sort folders and files together?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Why is there a huge delay on the sorting of files/folders in windows explorer?

If I enter a folder that has many subfolders and extra files, it seems to load everything at once in alphabetical order, then there's a delay while it sorts the folders and the individual files separately, also in alphabetical order. This delay can be something like 5 seconds with just a few hundred items, and it just grows from there.

What's the deal? Am I the only one experiencing this? How do I change this behavior to be more like XP... snappy and instant.

Answer:Explorer Slow to sort folders/files.

Hi MasterEvilAce.

Explorer is just like XP for me, snappy AND instant.
Is it just Explorer that lags like this for you? Is the OS otherwise snappy?

When I open file explorer and select certain folders, it opens in the alpha sort. When I go to sort on dates, it takes forever in Windows 10, and has pretty much since launch. Don't remember this on Win7. Are there any switches I could throw, or other config changes I can make to address this?

In Windows 2000, in the File Explorer, I can go View->Explorer Bar->Folders and the left side of the screen shows folders whilst the right side of the screen shows what's in those folders.I can also go Tools->Folder Options->View->Like Current Folder. This should record my preference to show the folders on the left always, whenever I open File Explorer.Problem:- that doesn't happen. If I open "My Documents" it uses the default view. Likewise if I set up a shortcut to a folder, it uses the default view. Can I change something in the registry so that the default view always has the folders on the left? Please help.

Answer:File Explorer, how do I get folders always on left and files on right?

I'm using XP so this might be different.  That particular option cannot be remembered by the OS from what I can tell. I just tried it here on XP and it didn't remember that for me.

I have named some sub folders using this:month names using 3 lettersJanFebMarAprMayJunJulAugSepOctNovDecI want Windows Explorer  (file manager) to sow then in order.I found some articles about this kind of thing, but not exactly  what I wanted.https://www.tenforums.com/general-support/17943-how-do-you-arrange-files-month.htmlIs there a way to do this? Any answer is welcome.

Answer:How can Explorer sort folders by month?

If you created them in order you can sort by date. Then the earlier month folders appear first.Otherwise you could prefix them with numbers, then sort alphabetically.Other than that you cannot have it "detect" on it's own that the names of folders are the short names of English Months and sort on that basis anymore than you can have it detect when folders are the names of periodic elements and sort them by atomic weight. The solutions you found apply to Libraries, not folders- but, you could use that. You can create a library, add the parent folder containing those month names, set it to Pictures, then opening that library and right-clicking and arranging by Month, as shown in the link with the normal pictures library. That will arrange based on the actual date of the last modification for each file and arrange then into sets. for each month and year.

Win 10 won't let me move photo files in a folder. Help please

Answer:Sort Files in folders

RobnFran said:

That doesn't say much.

It depends upon how you want to move them. If working in a single Folder you can change the view to Details then click the heading of each column to change the lineup. If wanting to change the lineup by name you probably will have to rename some of the files to fit the scheme you desire.

If I lookup a name of a file or folder, I would like the window to sort them the folders and files equally. Is this possible?

Answer:Sort folders and files together

Do you mean to have the files and folders mixed but in order?
If so, NO it can not be done. Windows has alway separated the files from the folders.

My files and folders are all out of order when I try to access them from MS Word 2007 (using File, Open), and there is no way to sort them! BUT, when I access the SAME tree of files and folders from Windows Explorer, everything is sorted A - Z perfectly. It's just that when I access these same files/folders from MS Word (using File, Open) the files/folders are all randomly listed, in a jumbled up order, and I have looked everywhere for a Sort button, but can't find one. (I can sort from Windows Explorer, but that doesn't change the order of the files and folders accessed through Word, with the File, Open commands.

This is a new problem, they used to be perfectly sorted --- and I haven't downloaded anything or done any Windows updates recently. I'm running Vista Home Premium (64 bit) and Office 2007.

Answer:Can't SORT Files + Folders

Just for chuckles take a look in the Tutorials section and see if there's anything about the Standard File Open Dialog settings. If not there, try tweak sites like Major Geeks and Annoyances.

edit: btw I don't have or use MS Word so I don't know if it uses some other dialog. But one of those tweak sites should have a fix.

Hi there

Is there any way to customize (or use an alternative to) File explorer.

Here's an example from DOLPHIN (a Linux type of File explorer) - breaks the folders down into decent alphabetical order and the files within them etc - makes navigation very easy indeed.

File explorer is a DOG compared to this - especially when you have large folders with loads of files in them -- the serach is better too !!!!.

Cheers
jimbo

There are others as well but some use the native explorer API's for search etc which may not be ideal.

When I sort my folders using "date modified," instead of ordering everything, I instead get all of the subfolders sorted, and then below that everything else, so it looks like this:

FOLDER A: 10th Jan
FOLDER B: 7th Jan
FOLDER C: 5th Jan
Randomfile.png: 12th Jan
Randomfile.mp3: 11th Jan
Randomfile.exe: 8th Jan
Randomfile.zip: 6th Jan

However, I'd like the files and folders to be mixed together and organised chronologically, like so:

Randomfile.png: 12th Jan
Randomfile.mp3: 11th Jan
FOLDER A: 10th Jan
Randomfile.exe: 8th Jan
FOLDER B: 7th Jan
Randomfile.zip: 6th Jan
FOLDER C: 5th Jan

Is there any way to do this?

Is it possible to sort your folders alphabetically while at the same time sorting your files on date?
I want to do this(see picture)

Answer:Sort folders and files differently

I never heard of split criteria. You could investigate the 3rd party file managers like Directory Opus, FreeCommander, Total Commander, Q-Dir etc..

If not mixed in one view a multi-tabbed file manager has the advantage you can set different sort and details for the same root folder and have the views come up together. Some file managers you can save tabs as a set or layout.

Edit: Also you could turn on the Treeview to see the folders on the left. There are Explorer enhancers like QTTabBar that add multiple pane capability to Explorer.

Hi,

i sort files by opening the folder then right click sort by name(descending)

is there a way when i select several folders
to sort the files in each folder by name(descending) in one click?

Answer:Sort files in selected folders

Welcome to the forum.

Windows Explorer sorting only effects how the files are displayed and does not change the contents of the folder in any way. How files are stored in a folder is fixed by the NTFS file system and cannot be changed.

I'm not sure if this is the right forum to put this, so mods, please move if necessary.

In my computer at work (Win 7 x64), my folders have suddenly decided to synchronize their sort options. If I remember this right, previously I had different sort options in my folders. Some were sorted by date, and some were sorted by filename. For some reason now, if I sort one folder by date they are all sorted by date, or if I sort one folder by filename they are all sorted by filename. This is very annoying because I keep having to sort the folders every time I go to one that has to be sorted by one or the other.

It seems to me that each of the individual folders used to remember how they were sorted and stayed that way. This has only been happening in the last couple of weeks. I thought that there was a setting in Windows Explorer that you could set to "Remember" the folder characteristics, but I can't find it.

Any ideas to preserve my sanity would be greatly appreciated.

In my downloads folder if I sort by date, it shows the most recent folders AND files all in the same order, whereas any other folder it separates the folders and files into separate lists. I moved my download folder to a different drive and it went back to the separating practice. I want to know how I can re-enable that behaviour? it's much more useful for certain types of folders.

Edit: I may have been wrong about how it was sorting things.. but I'd still be thrilled to be able to make it put them together as I described.

I have a problem that I just can´t seem fix myself.

This is the case.
I get a lot of reports auto sent from  my clients. They arrive as attached documents in gmail.

I usually download them and sort them by hand into client specific folders in google drive with the rapports date as folder name. This takes forever!!

The last days I have tried to automatically download them by filtering the emails in gmail and using Zapier to download into the correct client folders. So far so good.

But since there is maybe 20-50 files every day per client I need to find a way to automatically save in sub maps triggered by date.

I can make Zapier create a folder BUT since the trigger for creating that new folder is the same trigger that downloads the attachments I can´t figure out how to direct it.

Now is there any smarter way to do this? Can google drive auto sort into date labelled sub folders? Any other suggestion?

Thanx!

If i list folders first now, then the last accessed files comes down at the bottom.

Hi,

Is there an easy way to sort files/folders using multiple criteria--say by size, date and folder for instance? A free utility perhaps?

and/or

An easy way to capture the data in Wins' file explorer (view=detail) that I can bring into EXCEL?

Thanks,
Rusty

Answer:sort files/folders using multiple criteria

A directory lister program from krksoft seems fairly easy to use. Trial and error to get the output CSV file you want or need from the many options available. Otherwise, Windows has its own command prompt, 'dir', and plenty of options as well.

In Win 7 explorer, I note that whatever settings I use for file/folder sorting - it all appears to get over-ridden by an initial sort into a) folders and b) files. Even if a file and a folder have the same name (bar the extension) I cannot get the files and folders to intermingle as I expect.

What I get is a list of folders separately from the list of files. This is the same whether I choose List, Details, Content, etc views. I have attached a pic of a test folder I just put together to illustrate what I mean. The files and folders stubbornly insist on staying within their own groups - even though the "Group By" is set to "none".

Can this behaviour be over-ridden by some means?
Richard

What are the sort of empty folders and files one needs to be careful not to delete? And what are the best programs for empty folder and file deletion?

I am undertaking that systematic deletion for the first time. I ran Glary Utilities and found over 300 folders and removed them. Then I ran a freeware program named Remove Empty Directories and it found over 3000 more empty fiolders and files. (I suspect specialized programs typically do a better job at a task than multi-faceted programs.)

Re: What are the sort of empty folders and files one needs to be careful not to delet

Hey there conceptualclarity:

I've got a question on this subject. Been leery of removing empty folders, because I just haven't ever gotten it straight if programs automatically create a folder if the one the program is supposed to use is deleted. So do programs or does Windows create folder if one is supposed to be present but has been deleted? Any knowledge out there on this subject?

One other question. Are all logs .log files? If not, why not?

folders sort after filesWhen in "details" view I click on "name", "Date Modified" to sort the files, folders get sorted below the files.See the attached video. How do I prevent that ?I want folders to remain at the top at all times.

Answer:Win XP Folders sort files problem (Screencast video below)

If you click on "date modified" or "date created", Windows takes no account of whether it's a file or a folder - it sorts all of them according to the date/time criteria only. You can't have it both ways.If you want all folders together, above the files, date/time criteria must be ignored, so you simply click on the "Name" column. You can't have it in name order and in date order at the same time - impossible.

Help! I'm stuck.
I have a folder from which I need to delete a number of files but for each attempt to delete a file the error message comes up "Can't read from source disc or file". And yet the file can be opened in an application and the contents appear undamaged.
Thye same goes fort attemting to delete a folder, - the same error message appears. - "Can't read from source disc or file".
If I attempt to create a new folder so that I can download some images fromm my camera I get the error message "Unable to create the folder "New Folder"., - File system error (65535)".
Basically, the files / folders all seem to be OK and can be read by applications (Photoshop etc.) but I can't delete old ones or create noew folders. Any clues? Has some sort of overall disc protection been applied?

When I connect my Android phone to my computer via USB to access storage, it treats all the folders as music folders - this means that in Details view I don't get "date modified" but "track number", "artist", "album", etc.. despite this being completely irrelevant to the content of all but a single folder on the phone.

Is there any way of telling Windows that these are NOT music folders?

There doesn't appear to be any way to modify folders on removable media.

Hi there

Is it just me missing something or is the Sort not working properly in File (or what used to be Windows) Explorer. Running Windows 8.1 X-64.

In the screen shot surely all the folders starting Claudio Monteverdi should be shown together.

Doesn't happen and I can't see any strange characters in the folder names either.

In Windows 7 I used the the .dll file Explorer8fixes.dll, https://github.com/ijprest/Explorer7Fixes to return the sort headings in File Explorer for all views (Large Icons, Lists, Details etc).

In Windows 8 I place the .dll in System32, run CMD as adminstrator, type regsvr32 explorer7fixes.dll, and it gives me a message to say it has registered the dll successfully. However there is no change in File Explorer, even after restarting the PC.

I would prefer to get this .dll modification working rather than install a larger customization piece of software which also happens to include this functionality such as ClassicShell, Folder Options X or QTTabBar.

Can anyone help?

Answer:Show sort headings in all views (Win 8, File Explorer)?

Are you talking about the highlighted headers in this screenshot:

They are native both in Windows 7 & 8, no need to use third party tools. Select Group by and how you want to group, it adds headers automatically. Use then Sort by function to sort inside groups.

I have a mild annoyance in Windows Explorer (on XP) that I have been searching all around to try to find a solution for. It has to do with automatic sorting. Basically, new or modified files to a folder are not automatically sorted until the folder is refreshed.

Say I have all my files sorted by "Date Modified," from top to bottom, and then I open and edit, say, the third file. When I save the file, the "Date Modified" will instantly update. The problem, though, is that the file, despite it now being the most recently modified file, will still remain in the #3 spot until I refresh the list or change the sort order.

The same thing happens if, say, I sort files alphabetically, and then copy a file "Aardvark.txt" to the folder. It won't appear in its rightful place until the folder is refreshed.

I noticed that this problem seems to be fixed in both Vista and Windows 7, but I'm hoping there is a way to address it. I would love to be able to trust the folder's sorting without having to refresh it each time to make sure I have the updated sort order.

Anybody encounter this?

Hello there & Happy New Year.

I have encountered this particular inconvenience on the 2nd day of 2012 while i was transfering photos and files into my PC with Win7.

In my Win7 PC, all files/folders created or modified within Dec'2011 and earlier are now all grouped under as "A Long Time Ago". This happens when I changed the folder to be "Group by Date" or "Group by Date Modified" with a combo of "Sort by type". I tried sorting in different ways of view to see if I can get it back to what it should be. Then i realised even folder newly created on 25 Dec 2011 is also grouped as "A Long Time Ago" too. I am not sure if this is an intended feature.

The only helpful part is that i will still see the newer files in chronological order if I sort by date modified on top of group by date modified.

I have been using this setting for folder view even for Win XP. As for Win XP, i will get "Yesterday", "Last Week", "Last Month", "Last Year", "Two Years Ago" and ultimately the whole chunk of much older files under "A Long Time Ago". Such perfect chronological order.

I tried to google for a while and not much of returns to this issue I am having. Perhaps majority of people does not group their files/folders in such way. But for me, I like the way how it was displayed that I know i have edited/created/moved whichever files/folders last year, the previous month or ... Read more

Hello!
I have been trying to get this done for Windows 10 and wow is driving me crazy. It seems that the tweaks I find work for some folders but not for folders there I have photos which is exactly where I want to be able to do this.
I always have to go through the options and add the Date Modified first. Gets very annoying so maybe some expert out there can tell me how to do this?

Thanks!

Hi All...
I will explain what I need in as much detail as possible.
I need a batch file to move specific files into a separate folder, possibly by opening my hex editor, searching for the word "body" ( without the quotes ) and if found ,close hex editor, move file to a folder called "moved" ,then go on to the next one.If the word "body" is not found just close hex editor and ignore the file.
I have approx 900 files in a folder. One is a vehicle and one is a map for a game. They are mixed together and the only way of telling them apart is by opening each one with my hex editor and search for the word "body",which means it is a vehicle. If the "body" word is not found,it is a map.Example wording of the files: mapname.idf carname.idf
Manually this process would take hours, even days.
It would be a lot better if there is a way of doing this without using the hex editor/batch idea.
Here is a link to one map and one vehicle file if needed for an example:
http://vnovak.com/1nsane/2idf-files.zip
Thanks a bunch for your help!

Hi all...Using Win10 Pro x64. I would like to disable windows showing .zip files in explorer as a folder...When you highlight it the contents inside the .zip are shown in the right pane view. I've scoured the net and found ways for Win7(which I did disable .zip folders on my other Win7 machine) and Vista, perhaps 8 too but I don't want to risk trying a method for older versions of windows. Has anyone been able to find a solution/reg hack or whatever to disable .zip folder?

Thanks..........Jet

NoVirusThanks File System Protector is a powerful utility which uses a kernel-mode driver to completely lock a file or a folder and to deny write access to files (allow read-only). You can write rules for any process or only for specific processes, you can lock files or folders and you can also protect files from modifications (write access) so that processes can only read the file content, but not hijack or modify it. With NoVirusThanks File System Protector you can protect sensitive files and folders from unauthorized accesses or modifications, a swiss army knife against nasty ransomware like CryptoLocker family or to just protect important files.

On the ?Settings? tab you can specify a custom logs folder to save blocked events, and on ?Exclusions? tab you can manage trusted applications (using wildcards), so they are excluded from the block-rules. To edit the default rules or to create your custom rules, open the ?Rules? tab and then click the button ?Edit Rules? (it may ask you Admin credentials) to edit the Rules.DB file. The rules are updated in real-time and writing rules is very easy, you can use wildcards characters and aliases, example:

Code:

[%OPER%: DENY_ALL] [%PROC%: *] [%FILE%: C:\locked-file.txt]
[%OPER%: DENY_ALL] [%PROC%: *process.exe] [%FILE%: *\LockedFolder]
[%OPER%: DENY_WRITE] [%PROC%: *] [%FILE%: C:\read-only.txt]

Is it possible to sort a folder's contents with both File names and Sub-Folder names intermixed?
I have projects in sub-folders, and 'support' files like this:

projabc (sub-folder)
projabc.txt (file)
projabc.bat (file)

amongst other projects.
I would like all the 'projabc...' items to appear together.

Thanks.

I don't know of a way to get Windows Explorer to do it. But XPlorer2 is supposed to have that sorting mode.

While installing a program, the process was interrupted and the install created 62000 files using 160gig in my syswow64 folder virtually using all my hd space. However when you go into the syswow64 folder, there is only about 2000 files and 1 gig of space used. I have set the folders to show all hidden files. When I go into the ms dos prompt and do a directory, the files match the 1 gig data. I can't delete these 62000 files and free up the 160 gig space because I don't believe they are actually there on the hard drive but explorer thinks they are there.
Is there any way to rebuild, sync, or otherwise get windows explorer to recognize the correct amount of files that are actually in my syswow64 folder.(2000files 1gig and not 62000files 160gig)
Please advise. I am lost.

I'm at my wits end.

I have a couple of folders on 2 different drives that have .mp4 video files in them.
Whenever I attempt to open the folders, Explorer.exe (or the replacement I tried) crashes.

Here's my specs and what I've tried so far:

Windows 7, 64bit, all current updates for Windows and drivers, etc.
12 Gigs RAM, Nvidia GTX 970.

I can delete the files in a DOS window.
I already instructed Explorer to NOT show Thumbnails.
I have scaned with Malwarebytes, etc and am not infected.
A run of System File Checker reported several issues that it could not fix.
None of them involved Explorer.exe, but some were interesting:

The list is not all that long, so you'll find it directly below:

have 10% left on local drive, but when manually checking all file sizes of folders and files; the total amounts to 50% aprrox of drive capacity. (Can see hidden folders). Perhaps explorer is missing something?ta.

Answer:explorer not showing all files and folders?

Can you also see system files? How are you working out your totals? Are you including the system restore cache (system volume information folder) - its inaccessible to normal users, even administrators by default). If you turn system restore off and on again, it will clear this cache (which will be reflected by increased space left). You can also restrict the amount of space system restore uses.

Good Evening!

About 1 month ago, we had a program virus which made a home in our computer. I have been running Kaspersky Internet Security for years and love it. This is the first time that even Kas couldn't kill this virus.

Anyways, about 1 week ago, it quit popping up and Kas was giving me a clean scan. HOWEVER.....since then, I can't open Windows Explorer or my folders which are on my desktop. Internet Explorer, my e-mail, etc. open up just fine. But not my folders. (photos, documents, etc.)

I also use Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware and Tune-up Utilities 2009.

I run Windows XP.

I don't know what happened. I recently tried to download and install Windows 7 SP 1.
I opened Windows Explorer and every file there is .pdb. The other drivers on the computer are all fine. The computer works fine I just can not see any of the default folders in the tree for C drive. This is the boot drive.
I would be most grateful if someone could tell me how to get the Windows Explorer back to normal. I have tried and tried to reset it. I remains the same.
thank you
TinPenny

PS
I can not even show a screen shot because I can find only these .pdb files. There are no files I recognize

Answer:Windows Explorer, All files and Folders are .pdb now

Well, PDB files are debug files, so maybe this could be something to do with a version of Visual Studio or something? + never say a screen shot wont help, the mods here can do a lot more with a screen shot.

Hi All,I'm an IT tech, and have just faced the most strange problem. I have downloaded some files using firefox into my downloads folder and I cannot see the files through Windows Explorer (I can only see some files). Now the funny thing is, when I go to the download history in firefox, right click on the file name and choose "Open Containing Folder", I can see all the files.1- Files are not hidden2- I'm using an Admin account, I have Full Control over the files/folders and have checked all permissions3- Tried copying files to another folder but the copies cannot be seen through My Computer (unless I use the explorer session that I ran through firefox "open containing folder")4- Copied files onto a USB drive, connected the drive to another PC but still can't see them. Connected the drive back to my PC, the file is there but only through that explorer session that I ran through firefox)5- I have Ubuntu installed (Dual boot) still can't see the files still.OS: Windows 7Security: Avast Antivirus, ZoneAlarm ExtremeI just don't understand why I can only see the files when I browse the computer through Firefox !!!!!!!!

Answer:Can't access files/folders through explorer

it maybe that ff is not saving files to the folder you expect.open ff optionsIn the Downloads section of the Main Preferences window is an option labeled Save files to:. Accompanied by a radio button and activated by default, this option allows you to specify the exact location where you would like your completed downloads to be placed. To modify this location, click on the button labeled Browse. After clicking this button, a Choose Download Folder window will appear prompting you to select the desired location. After making the change, you should see it reflected in the Main Preferences window. The final option in the Downloads section states "Always ask me where to save files". If activated, you will be prompted for a save location each and every time you download a file through your Firefox browser.i hate computers!but cant help myself....

Answer:Why am I getting two of the same folders when I open File Explorer?

If you want to post pics , use the Windows Snipping Tool in Accessories and just paste the pic into the reply window , you don't even need to save it. (Opening stranger's files on One's PC is a security hazard eg from Word Macros)

If you are talking about a USB drive showing twice that is normal Win 10 , but it can be stopped with a Tutorial in the Tutorial Section on how to remove Drives from the Explorer Pane but needs reapplying after Each major Win10 Update , so get the .reg file and just use it each time.

I have just upgraded to win8 pro 64 and having major issues.

I upgraded from win 7 so it kept all my program's and settings. I had my synology ds209 NAS video, music a d download folder mapped to access through file explorer and it all worked perfectly. Since the upgrade I can access music and video fine but not the download folder??

If I try and map it again it does t even see my NAS under network but it appears under computer as a media device!

Anyone got any ideas?

Answer:Can't map certain folders or access NAS in file explorer

After you've mapped the Network drive, have a look at your music folder and look at the permissions, you'll see they're different to the download folder. Set the permissions on your download folder to match those on the music folder, hopefully that works.

I've been thinking, that if the above doesn't work, try to create a new library folder called something like downloads2 on the NAS.

Every disk and/ or folder when I tick sort by name-ascending the damn thing reverts to date modified-descending if I leave said disk or folder and return. I tried "Enable_Auto_Arrange_in_File_Explorer.bat" and "Reset_Folder_View_Settings_of_All_Folders_to_Default.bat" courtesy of Brink to no avail.

Is there a way to get file explorer back to default sort (by name-ascending) for all disks, folders and sub-folders at once?

It was all fine last week and I've no recollection of playing with any settings. Very frustrating.

Hello, I am (as of this writing) using Windows 10 Preview Build 14390. My question has to do with customizing folders in File Explorer.

Is there a way to customize every folder/subfolder on my system (including external hard drives, USB flash drives, and CD/DVD) so that the Bit Rate type I?ve selected in the Sort By context menu is displayed in ?Display? Mode?

As of right now, it seems I have to add this option manually to each and every folder I use, one at a time.

If this is possible, what is the procedure? Also, if it is possible, will it work for new folders, as well? And will it work if I rename a folder?

The Bit Rate option need only appear in folders that contain audio files. Is there a way to restrict this option so that it doesn?t appear in every folder? (It?s not a big deal if it can?t.)

Here?s a screen shot of what I?m referring to:

Is there a way to make files and folders mingle together when using details view in Windows XP?

The way it works now, the folders are always grouped separately from the normal files. I typically sort by filename and I'd like the folders to be mixed in with the files, sorted by name just as if they were regular files themselves.

I know this isn't an error condition, but it is an annoyance. Please post a reply if you know a fix or workaround for this. Thanks!

Answer:mix files and folders in explorer (details view)

View, Arrange Icons By, Show in Groups.
Not perfect though, because of the letter headers, takes longer to scroll.

Hi, I've search around the forum and the net and couldn't find a solution yet so I'd like to post the problem here.

Basically, some (not all) of my folders and files and gone in windows explorer. I'm using xp, and I've try everything to get the folders and files appear: hidden files, changing properties, deleted the regedit entry as mircosoft suggested...nothing helps. The thing is, I can access my folders and files still so I KNOW they're there (programs are usable, full address in address bar can access the folders), it just didn't show up in the explorer. I'm out of ideas here other than try to reinstall xp (I have a xp disk), but I'd like to ask for suggestion here first. Thanks.

When I open a folder with a large amount of files, especially photos with thumbnails, explorer will crash.

It quickly restarts but it closes any windows I had open and cancels all my file transfers which is really annoying.

I saw a couple of people reporting this in the MS forums but no real solutions...

I unfortunately bought a new HP Envy laptop with windows 10 Pro. The size of the folders in File Explorer are nothing like the size they were on my old Windows 10 Home Version laptop. Actually the View Large icons are the same size as the View Extra Large Icons. HP support techs know nothing. I tried personalization, display settings, advanced display settings, device manager, file explorer folder options, Intel graphics settings & system settings. I am aware that you can use the Ease of Access Center & make certain groups of windows or fonts bigger but I do not want a whole group bigger. The only other thing I have a size problem with are pop up windows when I am in a program & a window pops up for further choices. They are so small I cannot read them & it will not allow me to resize it by dragging it. I have read a few suggestions on google but but none work for me. I am at a loss. Can these settings be customized for the things I mentioned? Please help!

First off. Apologies if this is in the wrong forum

So I have had Windows 10 for a couple of months now, and have never had any issues up until now.
Whenever I try to rename a folder/ add new folder file explorer freezes as soon as i touch the keyboard.
I've scoured the internet for solutions but have had no success it's getting extremely frustrating as I can't keep having

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hello,
I've had this problem for a few weeks now with Vista. I bring up file explorer and try and expand a drive letter, but all I get is the spinning magnifying glass for about 3 or 4 minutes before it starts working.
However, if I double click on the right hand side (i.e. directly on the folder name) it opens immediately, but I have to do this for every folder I want until explorer decides to come back to me.
I don't think it is the indexing service as that is enabled for only a few folders and it fails on drives not part of indexing.
Thanks for any help

If you try searching duplicate folders under this PC you will get a lots of hits. Some seem to be pointing to syncing with cloud services, like Onedrive. Another centered around restoring document locations.

Would you mind adding a little detail. Did you move your data to a separate partition or maybe your laptop came configured this way. Are you using any cloud services for syncing and or for back up? Do you know which version of 10 you are using 1511, 1607 ?

I have no idea how this happened but explorer.exe is locking folders that contain some music files - mp3, wav and wma files. The files themselves are not affected and I can find ways around the problem using some utilities but the folders will not move, rename or delete in the normal way if they contain these files. I have tried 'unlocker' and 'who lock me?' but these do not solve the problem. I am not a techie and am very afraid of messing with the registry! The problem started three months ago and I have searched the web for an answer but can find no mention of the problem. Has anyone any idea why this is happening and how to fix it? My PC runs Windows XP.

Here is my process. I scan documents onto my pc and save them to a file on my network drive. Then, I need to email these pdfs to other employees. I used to open Outlook, create a new email then click on "attach file". I would then get a drop down menu of the recent files I've worked with. There were some files on this recent list that I wanted to remove. I couldn't figure out how to remove only the select one or two files, so I cleared the history. Now, the files I view are not being saved to this drop down menu. I have to climb through 4 levels of files to get to the one document I need. How can I get File Explorer (not Windows Explorer) to start saving my recent activity again?

Answer:File Explorer not showing recent folders

You may need to turn Recent Items on.

My C/Docs&Settings/myuseranme/Cookies and My Recent Docs folders wound up as unmovable Windows System folders. My user name has admin rights. I don't recall anything about why or how they got there. They belong with the rest of myusername folders don't they? Running XPSP2 and IE7, though I think it was the same issue using 6 as well. I do remember them being in their proper place in the past. I posted before but don't think I made the issue clear.

Answer:misplaced Windows Explorer file folders, what gives?

If they are in c:\documents and settings\yourusername\cookies and c:\documents and settings\yourusername\my recent documents then they are in the proper place. Unless you need them not to be, they are hidden by default.

Need to expand the list of folders under documents, pictures, etc and can't do it in windows 10. I need to move files to different folders. How to do that?

Answer:How do you expand to all folders in file explorer in windows 10

Not sure why you "can't do" that in Windows 10; file explorer in Windows 10 functions the same way in Windows 8 and 7 in terms of being able to view the files and folders in certain folders by expanding the said folder.
Open File Explorer. Under "View", make sure that the Navigation Pane is enabled. In the Navigation Pane at the left, once you hover your cursor on top of any of the folders listed there, you should see a grey arrow that looks like > - clicking on that arrow would expand the list of folders under whichever folder you clicked that > icon on.

When I sort a folder in reverse date order I want to see the most recent files and folders on top instead of scrolling through all the files to see the folders. Is that possible?

Answer:Win Explorer - can I stop it separating file & folders?

press F10 or ALT to show the Menu bar, click View | Group by, then either Date Modified, or Date Created. That will group the files and folders together by date ranges: today, earlier this week, last week, and older.

Files and folders will still be grouped together in each range though.

I have 2 Windows 10 pc's, Windows 1709 ( OS Build 16299.125,both up to date. One of them has just developed a problem with File Explorer being very slow opening folders after the first one has been opened. If I open Documents, on the first try, it opens immediately, but subsequent openings take at least 45 seconds for it to open again. The same is true with Pictures, Music, Videos, and Control Panel. After opening them once, it again takes the time for them to open again. I have searched this forum, Google, etc and tried oh, so many things with indexing, turning off Windows Search, making sure usb's were all in tightly, and on, and on. No success! The other pc does not have this problem and I have compared the settings and found no significant differences. I am getting at my wit's end, while 45 d

Hi,

This issue has been irritating me for a while, and I just can't seem to find a solution. What I'd like to do is; sort files AND folders within a folder (My documents for example) by 'name'. But currently it is sorting folders and then files alphabetically individually. This is not sorting by name, this is sorting by type, and then name.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated, here is what I mean.

How it is being sorted:

1003.folder
1001.jpg
1002.jpg
1004.jpg

How I'd like it to be sorted:

1001.jpg
1002.jpg
1003.folder
1004.jpg
Thank you.

Answer:How can I arrange files and folders alphabetically (Windows Explorer)

Can't mix folders and files. Folders first, then files.

starting here - please redirect if I need to post elsewhere.

my windows explorer file is in continuous failure. not sure if a corrupted registry or not

there is no blue screen of death, no error message just a failure to open items in the startup menu and occasionally a menu item will be dropped from the menu.

i'll get a blank window and the infamous circle icon attempting to open something like on a very slow computer

all browsers and programs run fine that are already opened

so my temporary work around is to use task manager to end the explorer.exe process

this wipes out all desktop icons and the start menu

again all other open programs continue to function normally

then while in task manager, I'll click on "new task" in the applications tab and restart explorer.exe

then everything functions well - I can open and access folders and programs - for a while

I can also accomplish by restarting my computer but using task manager is faster.

I've not timed how long before explorer fails again or what triggers it.

I've searched the internet and haven't found anything close to this issue.

Can anybody point me in the right direction?

Windows Defender is not as good as it needed to be to protect your system. I recommend Microsoft Security Essentials.

Hi,

In XP, if I opened up a folder, I could start typing and the folders/files list view would jump down according to the letters I typed in.

In Windows 7, this does not happen - the focus remains in the left panel (i.e. Favourites, Libraries, Homegroup etc).

Does anyone know if there is a fix to make the focus switch to folders/files when a folder opens?

TIA,

R.

How do I get rid of them?

Answer:windows explorer shows folders/files that do not exist

Hello Larry,

See if refreshing (F5) the window will remove it if it's just a ghost folder/file.

If not, then restart the computer to see if it's still there afterwards.

If still not, then see if you may be able to use the free program Unlocker to remove it.

Hope this helps,

This is a known problem, to do with registry damage and/or windows explorer, not to do with VLC. I have been dilagent with updating drivers, and am currently using Slimdrivers to identify further improvements to my driver lineup. I've already tried sfc /scannow 3 times already and also chkdsk and turning off DEP.

Is there any way to resolve this issue.

Thanks in advance!!

Answer:Windows explorer crash while opening folders/file

It may be related to some Explorer extension that was installed and crashing on network drives? Try disabling installed programs "shell integration" as much as you can to test.

Also, you probably want to install Windows 7 Service Pack 1, as it might fix something related to this crash, in addition to some other minor bugfixes.

I'm not sure when this happened (prior to my Anniversary update), but something has gone weird in File Explorer. When I view my user folder (from the left navigation of FE), the sub folders for Documents and Pictures shown aren't my local folders at all, but OneDrive folders.
I can still see the local folders by navigating to Local Disk C:>Users> and finally to my user folder, but why do I need to go though all that? Why in the heck are OneDrive folders being shown in the user folder that is supposed to only show local content?

Answer:OneDrive folders appear under my user folder in File Explorer

Hello Mark,

This is normal. The OneDrive folder in your user profile folder is where OneDrive stores/syncs a local copy of folders from your online OneDrive.

Hello,
In the file explorer I have folders with pictures, music and videos. Each type is stores in a separate main folder and under it subfolders. In the main folder properties I customize it what columns I want to see, then I click to set the same to all subfolders, click on 'apply' and OK.
When I open the subfolders - nothing is changed. I even closed the explorer and reopened it, nothing changed, the changes remain only in the main folder.
Am I doing it wrong or something else.
Answers will be appreciated.
Thanks

Hi there.

Is there any way in the file explorer / windows explorer to show files / folders in Groups. I never realized how useful this is until I started using Dolphin more and more (even for Windows files - via network shares). Particularly good when you've got zillions of file / directories on modern large drives e.g 3 TB drives.

Enc screenshot of what I mean (Dolphin file manager in KDE - any Linux distro with KDE or Dolphin as file manager).

Hello form Macedonia, dear friends.
Could someone of you please help me?
I have problem wit limited connectivity on my laptop (Samsung) but also on my iPhone 4 and my wife`s LG optimus 5 duo all at the same time. I changed yesterday my router speedport which performed wireless connectivity problems, with a same one- and the problem is actually the same. For every 30 minutes I have limited access on my laptop, iPhone 4 and LG 5. If i restart the router it is OK for a while, and then again the same story. Someone told me to switch off wireless option on both phones, which made connectivity normal on my Samsung laptop.
I repeated, I changed two routers and the problem persists.
I will be highly appreciated if someone helps me to resolve this issue

Yea, the topic name sounds very in-depth and confusing haha, so let me elaborate.

Sometimes I download wallpaper images, and Properly rename them so they don't have so much useless info in the filename. When I am renaming the files, sometimes I would rename a file that has the same name as a file that already has that name, so File Explorer tells me to rename it with adding "(2)" to the end of the file name. When that happens, I would like File Explorer to automatically rename the first one to have a "(1)" at the end of its filename.

Let's take an example:
There's an image that I renamed to Buildings.jpg. I will eventually run into another picture that I want to name as Buildings.jpg. When I do that, a question pops up asking me if it's ok to rename the file as Buildings (2).jpg. I say sure, why not bro? Then it gets renamed to that: Buildings (2).jpg. That is awesome, yet File Explorer categorizes this file name and places it above Buildings.jpg:

Buildings (2).jpg
Buildings (3).jpg (this is where the third one gets placed)
Buildings (4).jpg (this is where the fourth one gets placed)
Buildings.jpg

Notice how strange that looks? The first one is at the end of the list. I don't prefer that; I'd like consecutive files to be placed numerically under Buildings.jpg, hence:

Buildings.jpg
Buildings (2).jpg
Buildings (3).jpg
Buildings (4).jpg
etc...

But that doesn't happen. So I found an awesome trick which in a way I do prefer over my original idea; h... Read more

In the grand scheme of things Windows uses the file name and if 2 or more identical will start naming using special characters which puts the actual name at the bottom of the list. Best way is to name it yourself if given the opportunity but I do find myself in File Explorer a lot renaming the automatic saves as desired. By identical it is meant every character in the original file name shows as the same for 2 or more files hence the need to make something different as no 2 exactly-named files can exist in a Folder [Directory on Win3.x and MS-DOS 6.22 and earlier]. The Folder names changed with Win95. Yeah, I know, technicalities but I learned with DOS and Win3.x in '92 and had to start relearning with Win95.

I am posting this here under General Discussion since it is so spooky as to almost be a Twilight Zone thing.

We have a 3-computer local/home network with all dynamic data stored on a network drive. We use File Explorer frequently. Six or seven times since upgrading to W10, folders have gone missing. After each event, I have caught/found the missing folders in other locations in the directory tree. The network has not changed since 2008 and the problem never occurred with WXP, Vista, or W7, all using Windows Explorer, of course.

I have been blaming my wife for sloppy mouse-work (ya gotta blame someone) but she obviously hadn't done this kind of thing for 7 years. Last night I looked in a sub-folder for a particular file. Ten minutes later, I looked for it again and the folder was missing. I did a search and it was now located as a sub-folder in another sub-folder. They have never been gone, only moved in the tree.

I sure would like to know if anyone else has experienced this.

(I did a search for File Explorer but there are so many pages of hits I just caved and did this post. The hits for "missing folders", "folders moved", etc., produced nothing similar. Please let me know if there is a relevant thread that I have just missed.)
