Win Explorer is displaying the file size incorrectly, KB where is MB

Question: Win Explorer is displaying the file size incorrectly, KB where is MB

New Laptop w/Win 10 displayed the file size correctly until this morning.

This morning, they all are KB.

It USES KB instead MB. I know they are MB size.

Example, right window where the files are listed under the SIZE col, all are 00,000 KB.
I know they are large so I went to PROPERTY lists correctly, 00,000 MB.

ANYONE?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

So, bit of an odd problem... when I booted up yesterday and opened up the My Computer folder, I noticed that all of the file information (drive name, volume, etc.) was missing. I just had unlabeled thumbnails. This was in Thumbnail view; all other modes display everything just fine. I know what all of the icons are because I know their locations, but...

Any ideas?

This problem just started today on my PC and is driving me crazy. Any assistance is appreciated. Today while surfing the web, many (not all) web sites are displayed with larger text than is normally shown. It is not every site I visit, as many still appear normal. Sometimes it also affects emails that I view using MISE.

I am using IE 6.0 and my OS is XP Home SP1. I have checked the accessibility settings and they are normal. I have cleared out my cache and cookies. I have uninstalled IE and tried reinstalling. Nothing has worked. Remember, this only started today -- prior to today everything was fine.

I have viewed the source of the web pages that appear incorrectly, and they all seem to be using CSS (cascading style sheets). Could a file on my PC that processes these CSS instructions have become corrupted thus causing these font errors? I don't know anything about CSS so I am just throwing darts here.

Thanks in advance to all that attempt to assist me with this problem.

Three problems at many but not all websites:

1. Field that need to be filled in not visable.

2. Text in fields overlap.

3. Fields don't highlight as mouse cursor passes over them.

I am guessing these problems are connected...

Help please,

Thanks,

Stan

Whilst doing a computer restart last week after a windows update - my second harddrive has failed and I had to turn the pc off by the front button and remove the failed drive. On the restart - all my desktop, quicklaunch, start menu, multimedia and exe. files had all reverted to the generic windows default icon.

I have managed to get quicklaunch on the taskbar icons back, desktop icons back, and some of my start menu programs back. I still cannot chanfge and sound or video file icons back to say the winamp icon, or WMP icon etc etc.

To try and fix the problem I have done the following: Used system restore, ammended the registry entry for "maxed cached items" to 2000 from 500, I have run several virus checks, defragged, ran pest patrol / adaware / spybot / crap cleaner etc etc. I have uninstalled and reinstalled winamp/quicktim/real/WMP.

I have d/l tweakui - and ran this without success.

I still cannot change from the default windows icon for media files or for my .exe files.

If I install new software - on the start menu the program appears as the windows default icon and will not automatically become the program icon. I have to manually select "properties=>change icon" to get the correct icon to display.

Before I reinstall windows (which I havent done for nearly 2 years) what can I do to fix this problem..??

Answer:icons displaying incorrectly

Try the System File Checker

Go to the Run box on the Start Menu and type in:

sfc /scannow ( sfc if not reconized)

This command will immediately initiate the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files and verify their integrity, replacing any files with which it finds a problem.

I had a 3rd party icon pack installed in my computer. I have uninstalled it now. But I am having problem.
After uninstallling, some icons are displaying correctly and other icons are displayed as before. A screenshot will make it clear.

The "red circled" icon is the proper icon, the others icon are left by that icon pack. Though I have uninstalled the 3rd party icon pack successfully, the problem is still there. As far as I know, the icon pack replaced the following files in System32:

imageres.dll
imagesp1.dll
shell32.dll
zipfldr.dll

Tried the "sfc /scannow" command but didn't work. Please help....

Hi Everyone,I just installed ImgBurn about 2 days ago and it automatically placed a shortcut in my desktop.Last night, I decided to delete the shortcut so my desktop would look a little cleaner (less icons). But when I checked its shortcut in the Start Menu and its shortcut in All Programs, I noticed that ImgBurn's icons are not displaying correctly (I believe it's displaying the "No File/Program Assocation" icon). However, clicking on them still opens the program.I tried reinstalling the program and deleted the desktop shortcut again, but the results are still the same.I will post screenshots when I get back home if needed. I hope someone can advice or help. -- On second thought, I don't think there's an "Attach File" button here.

I have a very odd issue where pictures / links are not all displaying correctly in Certain windows programs like Windows Media Player, Internet Explorer, or Firefox (Installed after the problem began to see if maybe it was just an internet explorer issue). I did however install Google Chrome to see if that would display the pictures correctly, and it did! It worked fine showing pictures so I have no idea what could be causing the pictures to come up wrong now. Attached are a few screenshots of the issue. Windows Media Player showing the problems, Internet Explorer showing the problems, and then Google Chrome working fine!

So I made the switch from Vista to 7 without any hardware changes. Now Windows can display 1024x768 normally, but selecting any higher resolution (say, 1154x864) will make the monitor go into 1280x1024 while still saying it's in the selected resolution, and make things look blurry and squished as a result, and it's locked into 60 Hz, which is something you'd expect from an LCD monitor, but I'm using an EV700 CRT (yeah I'm old).

I didn't have any of these problems in Vista. Perhaps I'll have to mournfully switch back?

Hey, all. I've been having this issue for about a week now, and would really appreciate any help/advice. I think it may be a virus, but I'm not sure.I'm using a Mac OS X 10.5.8, and here's what's happening:While browsing sites, some webpages won't load correctly. Sometimes it'll just load a page of html codes, borked layouts, or mixes of both. Also, there are times when it'll load an image strangely, like there'll be random discolored lines or dots in it, or it'll only load half-way, if at all. It's doing this on Google Chrome, Firefox, and Safari. I've tried temporarily connecting to another wifi network, just in case the problem was somehow coming from my router, but nothing changed. Here are some examples of what I'm seeing:Image: 1Link: http://baddmage.deviantart.com/art/Hawk-in-the-Night-131228172?q=gallery%3ABaddMage&qo=0Image: 2Link: http://www.scriptfrenzy.orgImage: 3Link: http://www.tumblr.com/dashboard (Someone would need to be logged in to see this one, so I don't know who could make a comparison. I have searched and can't see this problem anywhere but apologies if I have missed it.
I have a website which is on Lycos and I use the lycos webbuilder within Mozilla Firefox version 1.0.6 OS XP home.
Since installing and running Ccleaner, Startup inspector and spyware blaster yesterday the webuilder it is not displaying correctly the fonts are not right and the sections of the screen are not in the correct positions it looks fine in IE, see attached files lycos1 is in Firefox and Lycos2 is how it should look (from IE).
I even tried restoring my system back to a point when I had no problems and uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox.
I am not a PC expert and have run out of ideas as to how to sort this.
I do remember that one of the utilities when installed replaced a dll file but I can't remember which one, would this have caused my problem.
Thanks

I am using Outlook 2007 and having some, not all, html emails where font is displaying as "Bleeding Cowboys." A font that is impossible to read at small size and one would never use for an email. I have forwarded one of these to someone else, font displays correctly as Times Roman. I've checked and made sure I have all versions of Times loaded. All of other emails display correctly except these from two different sources.

I recently upgraded to build 7057, and besides running smoothly all around, there is a problem with the way folder icons display. For example, in my music folder, with the view set to 'Large Icons' (or any setting that displays an image on the folder) almost all the folders display multiple images (the exception being when there is a sub directory containing the music within one of the folders. Anyone else experience this or know a work-around?

Answer:7057 Folder Icons displaying incorrectly

I don't think it's a bug, it's because there are multiple tracks with the same album art and that's why you have the image displayed more than once, if you had different tracks in the same folder from different albums then you would see 2 images displayed on the folder, make sense? Try making a folder and just putting 1 track in it and it should display only 1 image on the folder.

N00b here; please correct me if I do something wrong. =D

My dad and I recently just about completely overhauled my computer; installed the OS from scratch and replaced the motherboard (actually, I think everything got replaced except for a hard drive, but I'm not sure).

But I installed Photoshop 7.0 (from the same CD as I installed it on my other machine) and it's doing weird things. I don't get any error messages or anything, but the color display is wrong. Such as the color picker and every color image (amusing as it would be for Legolas to be green, seeing as he is an elf, that picture is simply not supposed to be that way). Note how Blue hills.jpg is PINK. Yeah. I have NOT messed with any of the color settings - it's all at default, and it's doing this.

Also, when I try to install the 7.0.1 update, it will find the folder that Photoshop 7.0 is in, yet when I click "Next" for it to actually install, it says, "The Adobe Photoshop 7.0.1 Update program cannot find Adobe Photoshop 7.0 in C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop 7.0\ -- Please attempt to locate Adobe Photoshop 7.0 again or cancel the update and install Adobe Photoshop 7.0 from the original disks or CD."

But it IS installed. And in that directory, too. I even uninstalled Photoshop and reinstalled it, and it still gives me that error message. The very same update file DID update Photoshop 7.0 on my old computer (unfortunately, I don't know what video card I had in at ... Read more

Good morning! New member, first post.

It seems the recovery partitions on my Dell 3847 desktop (Windows 8.1 x64) have begun to display when I open "This PC". This is new and has not happened before. Furthermore, the two partitions (WINRETOOLS & PBR Image) have been assigned drive letters. These two partitions show normally is disk management.

Is there anyway to prevent these partitions from displaying in "This PC"?

Usually a simple google search would be helpful but I can't seem to find anything on the issue.

Hello, I was wondering about the possibility to increase the images thumbnail size on the details pane in file explorer, and to make the panel maller than allowed by default. Is it possible?
Thank you for your help

Answer:adjust file preview size on file explorer details pane

There seems to be a minimum size which is pre-defined, you cannot make it smaller. The preview and details pane size is set by the DetailsContainerSizer binary value in the Registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Modules\GlobalSettings\Sizer
I do not know of way to make the thumbnail larger in the details pane. It is larger in the preview pane.

I am using Windows 2000, with a "20GB" hd. I had 4 primary partitions on my drive: linux boot, 2 fat-32s, and linux primary (with linux extended partitions inside). I finally ran out of space on my 2nd fat partition, where I keep all my media files, and since I haven't been using linux, I decided to get rid of it and merge the last 2 partitions. I deleted the linux primary, repartitioned it as fat-32, and copied everything from my 2nd fat partition to the new one (the old one was after the new one). Then I deleted the old fat partition and used ranish to resize the new one. It looked something like this:

Before:

| Linux Boot | Windows System | Linux Primary | Media Storage |

After:

| Linux Boot | Windows System | Media Storage |

Thankfully, my files are in good shape, but now windows still thinks this partition is 6.17 GB, when it is actually 12.41 GB, as reported by disk management in system management. How do I get windows to recognize the correct partition size? Partition Magic is out of the question; I'm broke and still looking for a job.... I've ran scandisk and norton disk doctor to no avail.

why is this and how do i get back my 35 gigs?

Answer:windows showing hard drive size incorrectly

Nobody ever gets full use of their hard drives. I have a 250gb that shows as 232gb and a 320gb that shows as 298gb. If you do the math, you lose about 7gb per 100gb to parities, partition tables, file allocation tables, etc. So, don't worry. All is normal.

Recently I upgraded the memory on my DELL 9150 desktop system from 2GB to 4GB (i.e. maximum allowed). Afterwards, when I viewed the "System Properties" in Windows XP, it reported 512MB of RAM installed. Thinking there might be something wrong with the new memory sticks I decided to re-install the original 2GB of memory (i.e. 4 x 512MB sticks), but Windows still reported 512MB of RAM installed. In both cases the BIOS reported the correct memory size installed, i.e. 2GB and 4GB. As a consequence of this problem, the system boots up and runs verrrrrrry sloooooow, and occasionally freezes.

Has any other member experienced this type of problem with their system, following a memory upgrade?

Hello, when you open any File Explorer window (such as going to C:\ ), File Explorer has a specific saved window size that it opens with. So when you resize it, either horizontally and/or vertically, close it and re-open it again, it saves the size of the window. I would like to know the location within the Registry where this information is saved. Also if possible, I would like to know the saved window size location for Notepad is, as well. Anyone know where this is?

Answer:Where's The Registry Location For File Explorer's Size?

On my system, HKCU\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags\AllFolders\Shell\WinPos1280x1024x96(2).position, where position is left, right, top or bottom, gives the position of the window border in pixels.

I assume the name of the key depends on the screen resolution.

When I'm in File Explorer in the Pictures folder I often want to rename the caption on a specific photo. However, Windows 10 has increased the size/height of the info box & when I right click on a photo to open the box the box extends into the taskbar & I have to keep clicking on the 'down' arrow to get to 'Rename' & sometimes this means I accidentally open up something in the taskbar. Is there a way to decrease the height of the info box? I only have a 13.3" ultrabook laptop, so it doesn't have the same height that a 15.4" has.

Answer:Changing size of info box in File Explorer

You can influence the way the right click context menu opens by the position of the File explorer window and the pictures in it. To see what I mean try right clicking a picture that is near the bottom of the window and compare to right clicking a picture that is nearer the top. You may find this helps in selecting the Rename feature which is near the bottom of the context menu choices. Unfortunately pictures seem to have more context menu choices and so the menu size is larger. If you have good eyesight you might be able to select a higher display resolution setting which will make everything a bit smaller.

So when I open up some sort of folder the explorer shows the normal details per file, including file size. The strange thing is that there are no longer and commas separating every 3 digits. For example, a file that used to read a size of 2,453,242 KB in the explorer now reads a size of 2453242 KB. Needless to say this isn't stopping me from using my computer, but its extremely annoying. Note that when I bring up the task manager, the RAM being used by programs also has its commas missing.

I'm using the most currently updated Windows XP and to my knowledge I haven't installed anything before or since this happened a day or two ago. The only non-perfect operation that happened around this time is my ATI Radeon graphics driver gave me a small issue and restarted its drivers after playing Oblivion. But it seems fine and back to normal. Needless to say I've also restarted my computer and the explorer shell itself and nothing seems to turn it back to normal. I don't want to do a system restore yet.

Anyone else ever hear of something like this?

We have a MAC machine running on BootCamp for Windows 8.1 as well as the MAC. It's been runing for almost 1 year. We found that on the Windows side (C:\ - BOOTCAMP) that this machine is only 4GB free space out of 371 GB. So we are starting to troubleshoot to find out what causing this.
We checked on C:\ drive (including Hidden file/folders) and select all the files and right click PROPERTIES to see the size and we found is 306 GB. So we are missing 66 GB !!!
Any ideas what causing this?
BTW ... we are running Windows 8.1 and we backing up via File History to external network device. But we now the fact that if the machine is not connected to the network, it backup to local disk. Now, we did setup to cache offline 5% of the disk BUT could be this is the issue?

I'm appreciated your feedback.

Bootcamp is a Virtual Machine. It will expand or shrink the VM, depending on the needs.

Also the fact that Mac OS-X uses a more efficient way of handling Drive Space use than Windows does.

Easiest way to find out is to click on "About this Mac" and "More Info". Mac OS-X 101.

Disk Inventory X is one of the better programs out there that shows you what is using up drive space for Size of the folders and how many files.

I have Windows XP Pro, SP2.

When I total up the size of all the files in the Thunderbird folder in Windows Explorer it comes to about 285 M. But when I check the amount of usage using Computer Management/My Computer after I transfer the Thuderbird folder to an SD Card I get about 700 M. Can anybody tell me what's going on here?

This problem is very annoying.

In Windows XP when I open a folder, a music folder for example, it would display the total number of files in the folder and the total file size. Windows 7 does not do this, which is fine, I thought, I'll just highlight all the files with Ctrl+A, doesn't work, I have to click on 'Show more details' which is hassle.

And why such a arbitrary number 15?

Is there a registry modification to increase this number? To say, 9999?

*edit* Found the solution in this thread. Mod can delete this junk post, thanks!

Why the heck Windows Explorer status bar does not show the file size, as it used to do in Vista and XP?

Is it possible that Microsoft is that stupid to remove such an important feature?

Answer:Windows Explorer Status Bar: does not show file size

Hi Champi, welcome to the forums.

I can't think why your setup would not be showing file sizes. Mine displays them fine

You might want to check some of your 'view' settings (ALT+V within explorer) and see if any of them help.

I've noticed this problem with many of the internal programs such as file explorer, that will open up in an unusable size and position, and even after I adjust those to my preferred settings, they always revert back.

Is there a fix for this that will allow me to set the size and position of any window in Win10 and it will remain that way?

Hello,

I installed Windows 8.1 on a different hard disk, and am setting my most preferred settings on this new installation. According to the attached picture, I noticed that I was able to add this bottom grey bar that states the total size of the files in this folder only (kinda like how it was with XP), and completely forgot how to add this feature to File Explorer.

Do you remember how I did this?

Answer:Show The Total Files' Size In A Folder In File Explorer

I just read my post and it actually sounds a little confusing. What I meant to say is that I've been using Windows 8.1 and have managed to add that bottom part to File Explorer in Windows 8.1. I installed a fresh version of this same Windows 8.1 on a different computer, and am trying to remember/research how I was able to add that grey bar down there. Have you managed to come across anything like this anyone? Does it ring a bell?

I've been doing a lot of tidying up of my file types and associations, and one of the things that I have done is to ensure that all my most used file types have meaningful and accurate "friendly names". So, instead Explorer referring to .wv files as "WV File" it now says "WavPack Audio File". I've done this for numerous file types and it has all worked well and is correctly displayed in Explorer.

However, I also use Windows Libraries, and for some reason it is still using generic file descriptions, or older ones that I chose myself and subsequently updated.

I have done the usual things of clearing the icon cache and all other cache and temp storage. I've also completely rebuilt the index of the Library in question. I have even removed all folders from that library and deleted the top level library itself (then, after a reboot, recreated it by selecting 'Restore Default Libraries'), but as soon as I add my folder to the Library, the same old file names show up again.

I have done a thorough search of my Registry and some of the terms being displayed by the Library are nowhere to be found in the Registry (because I have updated every possible instance of the file type name) so it must be cached somewhere, unless its buried in some indecipherable format in the Registry that doesn't show up in search results.

If I click an incorrectly named 'file types' group in the Library, and then choose 'Open Folder Location' to look at the same files direct... Read more

Answer:Windows Explorer "Libraries" displaying wrong File Type names

This could have something to do with your user files. Are you the Administrator of this computer & do you only have one user account?.

Click on Computer & then click on your main OS drive which is normally C:\, then click Users, which should show your user name as one of the folders. Click on that & select your Documents files & see if the new names are listed there, if so you can create a New Library by clicking on Include in Library, from the menu at the top, & selecting Create New Library.

If all the Documents are correct as mentioned above you could copy all the Documents into the New library & then after checking everything is correct you can delete the old library.

If you have more that one user account, it's possible that all the changes are being made on one account & you are then trying to access them on another account, so you keep getting the old arrangement.

I have an issue where seemingly random Windows 7 x64 computers will not display Microsoft Office file properties/metadata.  The issue appears to be independent of the Office suite version.  We recently migrated to Office 2016 from Office 2007 and
Office 2000 prior to that.  Oddly, metadata is displayed for a small number of files, but for the majority of files that do have metadata it is not displayed and cannot be edited through Explorer.
The screen captures below were taken from two PC's.  The 'Title' metadata is highlighted yellow and 'Categories' in red.  The same set of files is displayed in each capture.  As you can see only a small subset of the metadata is displayed
in the second capture.

If you try to modify the metadata from the 'Details' pane on a PC that has the issue you get this:

I have searched for hours trying to find a solution for this.  I'm hoping someone knows what is going-on here.

Using Windows XP Pro 2003 with SP3 a small but annoying problem occurred recently.  In Windows Explorer or Windows Internet Explorer (v. 7) I can double-click to open a file when I'm in full or maximum screen size, but not when I'm in the smaller or 'restore' size.  In the restore size, I can open folders or subfolders, but not individual files by double-clicking.  I've tried various ways to correct this but so far have not succeeded.  Does anyone have an answer like my wife announcing "it's right in front of your nose!"?

Answer:Displaying incorrect RAM size in Lenovo Laptop

Yes, it's true, windows XP 32-bit usually can't see more than 3 GB of ram. Moreover, AFAIK, any 32-bit OS has this problem. This problem exists because 2^32 bytes = 4GB is the maximum amount of ram which can be addressed by 32-bit OS. I'm not sure, but I think that 64-bit version of Windows XP exists and you can try it.

I bought a WD Hard drive a few months ago, and it's worked fine. I've been using Linux alot and recently I decided to trudge back to Mircowhore and use Win XP Pro. I installed Win 98 and used my Win XP upgrade disc and choose to use NFTS. Well, as it was formating my drive my power went out for just a second- long enough to shut my computer down. So I restarted it and went through everything and choose FAT 32 and planned to convert to NFTS latter. After it was all done I came to notice that my drive was only being read as a 33gb drive instead of the robust and full 120gb. WTF? So I used Partition Magic 8 to read the drive and it only came up with the 33gb FAT 32 drive with no reference what so ever of the lost 80+ gb's. Also Windows isn't finding it either. I tried a data recovery program and it didn't find anything. I used Data Life Guard to write Zero's to it to erase the Partitions, but even after that was done, it was still only 33gb. Grrr... Any ideas on what to do? I spent 130 dollars on this thing, and now it's not working. Please help!

Hi,
New to Windows 10 and was fooling around with fonts (no ``save button`? - that`s supposed to be a question mark, not a French accent, maybe part of problem) - now all text (in programs and in browser?) looks like a printer running out of ink. Have played with ClearText type, fonts, display ?tc. etc. When I try to change size in display settings, it`s stuck on 100% (does not slide up or down). Perhaps I need a new monitor? Any help greatly appreciated. P.S. Am in Canada, trying to use the US English keyboard - if I change my location to US and use US
keyboard, would that work? I haven`t got Cortana working yet either because of problems with location and language.
Thnx

Greetings!

One of my users asked me how to get the folder size to show up on the outlook status bar. I did some research after diddling around in outlook for awhile and haven't come with anything that I could do. I only have basic user rights and exchange admins aren't likely to make this sort of change at my request.

I read that it's a setting that needs to be set on the exchange server (We use exchange 2010). By default, we are in Cached Mode, but it doesn't seem to make a difference if I switch it off.

Is there anything that can be done on the client side to get this option to show?

Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.
Any ideas what might cause Windows 7 Ultimate to show only the start button and Windows wait cursor on the first RDP connection attempt using both monitors--but only when display is set to Medium (125%)?
My user can connect to his office computer (the one running Ultimate) via RDP using a single monitor(i.e. with "Use all my monitors for the remote session" unchecked) with no problem. However, when he attempts to connect both monitors (that box
checked), only the start button comes up in the remote session. The Windows wait cursor spins for a minute, then stops spinning but stays onscreen.
At the same time, there is no response to mouse clicks, and remote keystroke combintions such as Alt-F4 and Alt-Ctrl-End do nothing. However, if I then disconnect or minimize the RD session and then reconnect with all displays, all is fine: the desktop
appears with all icons, and start button, mouse, and keyboard are all fully functional.
This is all independent of the client computer; that is, behavior is the same from the user's RD client computer and when I do it from my home office. And it does not change if I change the RD environment settings to, for example, not show the desktop background.
But, being hesitant to hide behind the all-too-common "just recreate the profile - it must be corrupted", I dug more deeply. I found that he has his desktop display set at "Medium - 125%". Naturally enough, this cannot be chang... Read more

Excuse the noob question -- I don't even know where to ask this. We haven't owned a PC in ten years, and now we've got to relearn PC because my son's college's tech department doesn't guarantee mac support.

We've been poking around trying to figure things out, decided to change the wallpaper so we dragged a photo onto the desktop and figured out to set it as wallpaper. Now we can't get rid of the icon from the desktop. If we try to drag it to the recycle bin, it says

"the action can't be completed because the file is open in Dell Dock. Close the file and try again."

What =should= we have done to get a photo into wherever it could be used as the wallpaper? And how do we get this photo icon off the desktop?

Thanks so much!

Val

Answer:set wallpaper incorrectly -- how to close a file in dock?

Right click on the desktop, and go to Personalize. Hit desktop background, and you can browse for the file you wish as your background.

If you want to get rid of the picture thats on the desktop, you should just be able to drag it back into its folder. Or, if its a shortcut, you;ll be able to delete it unless its being used somewhere else as well.

The error your getting means the picture is open in Dell Dock, which judging from the site, it looks quite similar to ObjectDock. If you have a shortcut to the picture in your dock, you'll need to delete it I believe.

If you could post a screenshot of your dekstop, and your dell dock if my post doesn't help me, it'll be easier to localize your problem.

I recently created an image using Clonezilla using partitions rather than whole disk. I had to do this to apply the image to a 80GB HDD rather from a 250GB HDD. This way my whole disk image would fit on smaller drives. Well I think my shortcut to making a whole new image on the 80GB broke something.

I did this by shrinking the partition on the 250 to ~24GB and making an image of the System Reserved (100MB) and the C drive (~24GB). I then applied this image to an 80GB drive so I would be able to take a whole disk image to apply to any drive that is 80GB and larger.

After I applied the Clonezilla Part-Image to the 80GB the partition was only ~24GB... This is expected. I figured I would be able to expand the partition to the un-formatted space.

The kicker is, I can't do that. Disk Management says that the C drive is actually ~74GB.

--See attachment--

My brain hurts. Is there a known solution for this?

What I am going to try next is remove this 80GB HDD, plug it into another computer and delete everything off it. Make it RAW no partitions. Then I will apply the part image again and hope that it will have three partitions. 100MB, ~24GB, ~50GB. The 50GB will be un-partitioned space that I can extend the C drive to. This is my theory and I hope it will work.

Answer:Disk Management is not displaying correct HDD size. Partition issues?

I am able to extend the partition if I use a 160GB drive but not the 80GB. This is very strange.

I'm running Windows XP but this seems to happen on every OS running IE8. Previous to the IE8 update it did work fine.

The problem is that we have a custom file format (.RCV) which is an application save file basically a ZIP file with our own extension containing all the dependencies of the project.

Some project files has been exposed for customers to download and open in a viewer application which reads these .RCV files and it has worked just fine.

But after the IE8 update, instead of choosing to save/open the .RCV where opening it would choose our viewer application it now says that it's a .ZIP file so it would save a ZIP or open it as a compressed folder which of course it wrong.

From what I gather, this is caused by mime type and as .RCV doesn't match any existing mime type it now open it based on content rather than just saving it with the extension which is actually has.

I've found a setting in Internet Explorer 8 under security which says "Open files based on content, not file extension" but this settings is set to disabled.

I've also found that if I add the web site to "Trusted sites" it will (!) open/save the files as .RCV and not .ZIP but since this is a client side setting it doens't really help us.

I've tried to use TYPE= in the link to specify different mime type but it still saves the files as .ZIP.

I think this is a very strange feature, why would someone link to files with a different extension than .ZIP if the file w... Read more

Hi
Thank you for taking the time to read my query.
I just restored a bkf file and the restored folder is smaller than the original bkf file. I need to delete the bkf file which is 12 GB but don't want to until I am sure all the files were restored.
I would like to figure out which files were not restored.
Is there any way to figure out which files are missing. After I restored the files, the report says that hardlinks could not be transferred but does not the size of them. The bkf file size is 33,754,314 bytes larger than the restored file, but the bkf file "size on disk"is 19, 099,648 bytes smaller than the restored folder!!!
When I left click on the bkf file and select properties it does not tell me how many files are in the bkf file only the bytes.

Is there any freeware/program that will tell me the number of files in the bkf properties dialogue box? Or even better let me look at the size and number of files in the three main folders I backed up.? I can not access/explore the bkf file only restore it. That would solve my problem. My backup tree is C:sharedhardlinkdata>beth>documents and settings>beth> and then 3 folders underneath
Thank you

What is meant by "size" and "size on disk" in windows?

Answer:In File Properties, What is Size and Size on Disk in Windows

I bit more context might help a bit but I suspect you are referring to file size.A file of a particular size might uses more space than it needs.e.eg A file that is 6kBs might uses 8 kBs of disk spaceSo the size is 6kBs and the size on disk is 8kBsThe difference is down to something called slack space. Slack space comes about due the the blocks that the hard dsik is divided up in known as clusters. With the NTFS file system the cluster size is 4kBs. So a file will always use multiples of 4 kBs on the disk. The bit left over at the end is slack space. The biger the cluster size the more slack space which is essentially wasted space. With the Fat32 file system the cluster size can be as large a 64 kBs.. So a 4kBs file will use 64kbs of disk space. a 65kB file will use 128 kBs of disk space..Stuart

After doing a lot of file management (backups, deletion of unnecessary files, defrag, etc) I was able to recover a substantial amount of space. When opening up Computer, I noticed that the size was only registering about 70GB free (out of 500). Knowing this couldn't be the case (I had found the directory my screen recorder saves to, apparently it records lossless avi at 1gb/minute) I did the usual right click on all the folders in root:\ and the size count was only 162GB, with hidden and system folders viewable. I found TweakNow PowerPack 10, which I had used for its Disk Usage Analyzer. That came up with only 94GB used.

After those installs, the disk size jumped to 94GB free.

Attached is the Systweak file structure (only root:\*, so nothing personally identifiable), the [email protected] Hard Disk diagnostic (can't make much sense of it, I'm a computer guy but not that far into the really specific components), and the main Computer window and properties.

If you can make any sense of it, please let me know. Also, if you might need any other readings, just ask.

Thanks,

I have MS Access 2010 & have a database that has been about 45 MB in size for 2 years. About a month ago I noticed it now is 67 MB. I compact & repair every time I save it which is twice a month. I've gone back & did a compact & repair on the 67 MB file but it does not change.

I must have looked at & changed something without realizing it. The actual number of records appears to be correct. How can examine and/or compare tables or other internals between the two sizes? I've seen a program called AccdbMerge come up on a few Google hits & was wondering if anyone ever used it?

And & all suggestions would be appreciated.

Answer:Access file size increased in size by 50%

The only reason I've seen for a database to get very large is when there is a picture (JPG file) used in a form. Apparently Access does not do a very good job with storing this type of data. Perhaps your database has an image stored as a data item in a table (or some other place.) Other than that...no idea why you should see such a large size.

Alternately, you can create a new empty database and then copy each object from your current database to the new one, one at a time, and check the size of the new database after each copy. That will at least identify which object is causing the problem.

As per instruction on the link below, I have modified registry to increase page file size.

I have put each 5,000 MB so page file size should be around 15 GB according to me. But when I look at "performance" tab, it shows limit only 3765392 so around 3766 MB.

I checked under settings >> Performance Options of Advance computer properties, there it shows Total Paging Size 2046 MB. But when I click change, there it contains custom size of 5,000 MB.

So finally I just want to know if my paging file size have really increased to 15 GB or it's just 2046 MB as it shown there.

- How to overcome the 4,095 MB paging file size limit in Windows

Answer:want to know my page file size after increasing page file size in registry

I sorted this out myself. After I restarted computer, I could see the new page files created but the total was only 9000 MB though I put each (total 3 page files) 5,000 MB in registry.

Hi folks,

I'm having a few problems with Explorer 9 not displaying some webpages, such as the BBC iPlayer page (just a blank black page). Other pages display wrongly, such as Twitter and my own website. They work - but the text/graphics aren't quite where they should be.

I've done an AVG virus search and a Malware Bytes search and both were clean. I'm sure I have some kind of bug though - but don't know how to find it.

Also, the webpages I refer to work fine in Chrome - but I prefer IE9.

Any help would be gratefully received.

Andy

Answer:Explorer 9 not displaying some websites

PS Forgot to say, I reset Explorer 9, uninstalled back to IE8 and reinstalled IE9. No difference.

Today, when viewing webpages (Outlook Express is okay) graphics and icons were replaced by boxes with squares, triangles and circles inside. I'm sure there's a name for these!?! Hopefully this message will go through properly, as I'm not able to read the buttons above the message area. Photograph type images seem to be okay. Help! And, thank you!!!

To try and solve the problem, I uninstalled all older versions of Java and re-installed an up to date Java today but I still cannot see Java in the internet options.
I have checked Java in the control panel for the defaut browsers and Explorer is ticked.
Operating system is Vista
Security is Kaspersky Internet Security
Have you any suggestions please?

A very bizarre problem has just occurred today and I am at a total loss. It's actually pretty hard to describe.

I bought an external hard drive to dump old files onto because I have so little space on my PC that I can't even defrag. I've been backing up everything onto it today. I was backing up my fonts when I got an error message about a Cyclic Redundancy Check. After that, the display went a bit odd; the fonts on my desktop theme were all wrong, for example.

After a couple of seconds, everything went back to normal, so I thought no more of it. Since then, however, IE has not been displaying correctly. Google won't show up at all, and anywhere there's a box to type text is just a big yellow square that I can't type in. Any web page that has buttons is also displaying badly, the buttons are tiny squares with no text on them.

I thought it might be a driver gone haywire since I installed my graphics card myself, but I reinstalled it and it's made no difference.

Also (and this has worried me a bit) I tried to do a System Restore to roll back to yesterday and it wouldn't let me. It just said it was unable to restore.

What on Earth should I try now? I'm really not sure what the problem might be so I don't know what to look for. Thanks!

Answer:IE and Explorer not displaying correctly

Sounds like instead of copying Fonts to your backup, you remove some. See if you can restore all your fonts back.

Hi all...

I noticed a couple of days ago that after I installed MS Office 2007, the My Documents folder (which I created on my data drive) did not list in MS Word when I went to open a file. All of the other folders were accounted for. I dismissed this as a slight glitch in MS Office.

This morning, I went to look for a file contained within the My Documents folder using Explorer and the folder was missing. Of course, I was shocked to see this. Thankfully I set up a weekly backup on an external drive, so my data could be recovered there, and that backup just happened to occur last night. Whew. Now, I opened up the backup to restore my files when the backup asked if I wanted to replace the existing file with the backup.

So, essentially, the folder and files exist on my drive, but Explorer and MS Office, etc. are not displaying this folder. This is obviously something that I cannot have as this is my main data folder.

On the weekend I switched "on" the "display hidden files and folders" which mysteriously got turned 'off'. (I always have these listed/visible as I am the only one using my computer). Not sure if this contributed to the issue I'm having now?

Please let me know if there is a fix.

I'm transferring files, from external hard disk to an another external hard disk...
from a non-external powered to an external powered one...

I'm using cut & paste...

Suddenly, blackout happens...

There'll be data writing failure...

So I checked some of my files(mostly in .iso)... Some of them have very big difference between Files Size & Size on Disk (around 4 GB)...

So, I tried to open it... Nothing happen...

Does this big difference can make anything goes wrong?

Answer:Different in File Size & Size on Disk

Are you talking about this?

When I right click a file to view it's properties there are two different values shown: one for file "size" and the other for "size on disk". The second value is always larger. Could someone please explain what the difference is because I'm in the process of allocating space for backed up user data on a network share and I need to multiply the average file size by the number of users to get an estimate of how much space to allocate to that share. Thanks in advance!

Answer:file size vs size on disk

Disks are laid out at a base level in sectors, and then in clusters which are groups of sectors.
For example, on a 32GB partition (Fat32) the cluster size is 32000 bytes. On a NTFS system, the standard size is 4K.

Files can only be on a cluster boundary. Therefore, in this example, a file that is 16,000 bytes (file size) will be 32,768 bytes (on disk). And a 40,000 byte file (file size) will be 65,536 bytes (on disk).
Or, on a NTFS system, a 5,000 byte file will take 2 clusters, or 8,192 bytes (on disk)

Do Start > Run > Command and at the prompt enter
CHKDSK

After it runs, the "xxxx bytes in each allocation unit" is the cluster size.

I am having a problem with Windows Explorer. I Have been putting my music (Several Thousand Albums) on my computer as an MP3 file ever since Windows XP and have never come across this before. Each Music album is in it's own folder plus in that folder is its Album Art (ie: Front Cover/Back Insert & CD Art.) Recently when in Large/Extra Large Icon view all I am seeing is the default Music Note Icon. All the Cover Album Art is embedded into the file but it is not showing although it is in the IDTag of the properties for every file. In WMP12 all the Album Art is shown when in Album or Album Artist. This all started when I booted up one day and opened Explorer. Nothing else was done. All the Music is on an external Hard Drive and backed up on another External Hard Drive.

Hi,

First time post here so I'm really hoping you can help me out.

I have a DVR for CCTV which places recordings of its video files on my PC over my local network. It puts them in a .HAR filetype which it seems that windows will not acknowledge exists.

From the software on the DVR I can see files in the folder but when I open the same folder directly in windows it tells me that it's empty.

I've no idea what to do so would welcome any help.

Thanks
Andy

Answer:Windows Explorer not displaying.Har files

If you're reading that correctly, that file type is so obscure that even FILExt - The File Extension Source and File extension HAR - How to open .har files -- two pretty comprehensive sources of information -- don't know about it as other than "primarily associated with 'e-Sword' by Rick Meyers. e-Sword is an effective way to study the Bible."

You'll have to ask the manufacturer of the DVR/CCTV system.
