Replacing the Optical drive on Ideapad 510151SK with HDD caddy, need drive size -12mm or 9.5mm?

Question: Replacing the Optical drive on Ideapad 510151SK with HDD caddy, need drive size -12mm or 9.5mm?

Hello, I'm going to be replacing my primary HDD (1tb) with a SSD and will place the HDD in a drive caddy, replacing the existing DVD drive. 3rd party vendors list both 12mm and 9.5mm drive caddys for this - I imagine a newer laptop would have the smaller form factor, unfortunately this spec info is not available from the manual or Lenovo tech support - does anyone happen to know? Might be best if I yank the drive and measure it or take it with me to buy a caddy in person, rather than order online. Thanks for reading,Paul

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Per page 63 of the Lenovo ideapad 510-15ISK/ ideapad 510-15IKB Hardware Maintenance Manual item #4, your laptop uses one of 3 9.0mm optical drives (see below) so a 9.5mm caddy may not work. There are some 9.0mm universal versions like this one available, but I have not used them, so be sure to check with the seller for capatability before ordering. Hello everyone! I am planning to add a SSD to my HP Pavilion 15-p263nl Notebook PC. I found on some sites that I can remove the optical drive and put a second drive using a caddy adapter into the optical drive bay. I found that some people on the forum have done it successfully, but nothing about my PC model. I want to know if it could work with my product. In other words, there is my plan:1-Remove the actual HDD from the hard drive bay and replace it with the new SSD.2-Remove the optical drive and replace it with the caddy adapter containing my old HDD.3-Do a clean install of Windows 10 on the SSD, using a USB recovery flash drive made with my actual Windows 10 system (which was updated from Windows 8.1 by July 2016). I already have a 120 GB SSD drive from OCZ (OCZ Vertex 3). I have some questions before buying the adapter:1- Will the two drives (my old HDD and the new SSD) be recognized by the motherboard / BIOS and the operating system (Windows 10)? Is there a limit of one unique HDD/SSD drive on the computer?2- which dimensions does the adapter have to be? I found offers for both 9.5mm and 12.7mm that are said to be suitable for HP Pavilion generally speaking3- Do these parts work together and with my computer (size, compatibility)? Do you expect any problem with this upgrade?4- Will the clean install of Windows 10 work, since I plan to install it on a different drive than the one I used to create the USB recovery flash drive? I have never done a clean... Read more

Answer:2nd HDD caddy replacing optical drive for HP Pavilion 15-ab5...

From the Manual: Optical drive Fixed, serial ATA, 9.5-mm tray load You seem to know what you want to do but let me just toss out a couple things you may not have considered. The optical drive port is a lower speed SATA than the hard drive port. So if you put an SSD in there it will be running slower than it can. Also it is not bootable so you would be using an SSD just for storage. You may want to consider just putting a bigger and less expensive mechanical hard drive in there for storage.  The laptop has ports for 2.5 inch SATA hard drives and a SATA-type M.2 disk so you can add a solid state drive that will work way better, just not in the optical bay.  Service Manual Post back if you need any more help.  If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

I want to replace optical drive with SSD, now I am not sure if its better to replace Optical drive with SSD ot to replace HDD with SSD and Optical drive with HDD. Dont know the difference. Then I want to do clean install of WIn10 on SSD. I bought 128 gb SunDisk SSD. I wanted to buy caddy with these specs:2.5" SATA III HDD/SDD caddy 9.5mm   Size: 125mm*125mm*9.5mm Both SSD and HDD if I checked correctly are 2.5' and SATA. What I dont know is Optical drive SATA aswell. What I am asking if someone can confirm that it will fit and witch option is better (above). And is there any other parameter that I should check out before ordering caddy? Thanks in andvance.

Answer:SSD caddy replacing optical drive for HP Pavilion 15-au003nm

Here are some things to consider about an optical drive caddy. 1. A drive placed in there will run slower than a drive placed in the main SATA bay. 2. A drive in an optical bay adapter/caddy will not be bootable so will not be able to hold the OS.  So, what you want to do is take that SSD and place it where the hard drive currently is located and then place the old hard drive in the optical caddy. You can still access data on the optical bay drive and transfer is fast enough for video streaming and music but will not be optimal for things like video editing. Just pure raw storage, really. Here is the Service Manual: Manual Hard drive access is on page 32 and optical drive removal is on page 27. The optical drive is 9mm, not 9.5mm and we have had some people report trying to use a 9.5mm bay adapter will not work as it is just a hair too thick to fit inside the laptop. You might find that a 9.5 mm drive adapter will fit, but I cannot guarantee it. It only uses 7mm hard drives but if you happen to have a 9.5 mm form factor hard drive you can (carefully) see if it will fit in the optical bay slot.  Your laptop does have an M.2 mSSD ("gumstick") hard drive slot which would have been a better choice for upgrade. If you can return the 128 gig SSD might not be a bad idea. It only uses the SATA type 2280 M.2 disks with the B + M keys.  If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

Hi Everyone, My issue is the following: I replaced my optical drive, and insert an additional HDD to my ThinkPad T440p computer using and ODD caddy ICY-BOX AC640. However, the replaced unit seems to blink the activity led for a short time (~1 sec) only when powering on and powering off the machine, and is not detected neither in the BIOS or by the OS.Additionally, the most recent BIOS version (GLET81WW (2.35 )) has only limited settings available compared to the previous versions, so that options regarding the handling of disks is unavailable.I run LinuxMint 17.2. Any hints/helps regarding the topic is welcome.Regards,Marton

Answer:T440p Replacing optical drive with ODD caddy 9.5mm - not working

Hi,I'm having the same problem with the B50-80. I replaced the original HD with an SSD and it worked fine. But when I insert the second HD in the optical bay with the proper caddy neighter the BIOS nor Windows recognize the hd. The only application that reads the hd is Device Manager that detects an unknown device with the right name of the hd (toshiba). I am running Windows 10 and the 3.0 bios version. Does anyone have an idea? Thanks

I'm trying to replace my DVD drive with an SSHD and can't get it to work. Are there any known limitations on what is supported? I already tried two different adapter cages to put an additional hard drive in the dvd slot. At first I tried a Seagate FireCuda 2TB which is not recognized most of the times. I got it to work one or twice but don't know how. It always was after I suspended and then resumed the laptop, never after a reboot. If I replace the stock SSD with the FireCuda the drive is recognized. But the SSD is not recognized when I connect it to the optical drive connector. I also tried to use an old WD Scorpio Blue 500GB HDD and it works when connected to the optical drive connector. Why is this so complicated? I have an Edge 14. Intel i3 M370 model.  I ordered a OBHC and installed a 160 Gb SATA drive, loaded with WIN 7.  In the main drive bay I have an Ubuntu OS setup.Trying to set up a dual boot configuration.  But, when I boot the drive and enter the BIOS set up, the drive in the caddy doesn't show.  If I let it boot from the main drive, Ubuntu starts up. If I put the Ubuntu drive in the caddy and nothing in the main bay, "NO OPERATING SYSTEM." When I look at the computer in Ubuntu, the OS7 drive is there.  All three partitions (Lenovo, OS and startup).  I can mount them, etc.  When I use Disk Utility in Ubuntu, the drive shows up listed under the SATA controller and is located at position 2 of the SATA bus.   I updated the BIOS and it is now 1.26. Still no sign of the HDD in the caddy.  Very odd.  When I power up the computer, the LED in the caddy does light up. When I run sudo update-grub in Ubuntu, the WIN 7 loader shows up in the list.  So a bootable OS is seen.  But if I select WIN 7 loader in the GRUB list at boot, I get a "no such drive" message, and am lead back the the GRUB list. In the BIOS, the config menu, the startup list only includes HDD0.   Is there some secret BIOS trick I need to play?  Correct me if I'm wrong, but there aren't any jumper settings, etc. on a SATA drive, right?  Nothing there to change. Any suggestions would be very much appreci... Hi,
I am trying to replace my optical drive with a HDD Caddy with a Seagate 2TB HDD. When I start my laptop with the drive installed both my bios and os don't recognized it. If I start my laptop and then slide the caddy into the optical bay my os picks it up immediately. If I restart the computer the drive is gone. I have discussed with the caddy manufacturer and they aren't sure what the issue is. I have updated all my drivers and my bios via Dell's website.
Can anyone provide some insight?
Thank you.

Greetings, I ordered a 9.5mm "Universal" drive caddy from Amazon which stated compatibility with the V5-571, but it's terribly tight trying to get it to fit and even though I push it until it feels like it's seated in the SATA port, the screw holes under the keyboard don't line up and I can't get Windows 7 to recognize the 1TB 7200rpm NTFS-formatted drive, even though I've verified that the drive can be recognized on another Win7 system. I'm concerned about the mis-fit and wondered if anyone here has had success in installing a caddy in the optical bay? If so, I would love to know if there is a measurement or other specification I need to look for, or better yet, a link to where I might find one. Many thanks.

I just bought I used Portege M750 because my M700 was broken. Unfortunately, the select bays between both models are not compatible. Although the availability of a 2nd hdd caddy is mentioned in the users manual, I couldn't find the part no of the HDD caddy for the M750. I tried a standard SATA-SATA HDD caddy, but I get an "select bay error" message on startup, although the caddy works in windows as long as you don't hibernate.

Does anyone know the part no of the genuine 2nd hdd caddy for Portege M750 / M780? Or is there another 2nd hdd caddy which does work with the M750 without any restrictions?

I assume you will need an Hard drive caddy part number: P000452980
Then you could place this into the Toshiba's Ultra Slim HDD Adaptor PA3408U-1ETC and PA3408U-2ETC

But you can also contact the Toshiba ASP in your country to get an confirmation...

Take it out of the caddy and it works fine.

Hello there,

First off thanks in advance for reading this! I would really appreciate some advice

I have a 17inch Macbook pro i7 laptop.

I was looking at the possibility of replacing the optical drive with a SSD drive (i never really use the optical drive anyways)

I found a place online where one can purchase the SSD drive and case so it fits into where the optical drive is also.

My question is has anybody else done this? and if so is it a good /bad idea?

And also once I replace the optical drive with SSD can I have it so my OS is working off of the new SSD drive and my original 5400rpm HDD will appear up as a separate drive for storage.
Im not sure if its relevant or not but here are the specs of my laptop

Mac osx 10.6.8
2.66 GHZ i7
8gb 1067 MHz DDR3

Thanks!

I've gone through several of these caddys.

My laptop (a Lenovo G500) continually has the same problem; it refuses to recognize the HD I connect to it using an Optical Bay Caddy I purchased on eBay (I've tried several, it does this with all of them). The first time I connected it it saw the Hard Drive and worked perfectly. I rebooted and it hasn't shown up in the BIOS's Boot Screen or anywhere else since.

Here are some pictures of the caddy itself: https://imgur.com/a/qEXbq#0

Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 4000, 1366 x 768

What could be causing this?

hi bigboy61,

Thanks for Posting!

This will not void your warranty, Given that the replacement procedure did not induce any physical damage on the system.

Part replacement or Part upgrade will affect the warranty of other hardware parts warranty of the computer.

Hope this helps

Hello,

I appear to have a corrupt C Drive, the Lenovo test came back with storage device test failure. This makes sense to me, as I have had nothing but problems with this PC from day one, I had to re-install Windows 10 about 5 times...
It came with Windows 8 originally.
So I guess I need to get a new hard-drive. I remember doing something like this about 15 years ago, where it was just taking something out of a slot and putting something else in instead, but I guess times have changed! What do I need to do, and will this affect being able to install the operating system etc?
Many thanks for any help....

Answer:Lenovo H50: Options for replacing a failed hard drive (HDD, SSD, caddy, SSHD)

This maybe be an opportunity (as they say, to turn lemons into lemonade.)  Probably the one best thing you can do to add performance to your system (providing your storage requirements aren't extreme), is to replace your HDD with a SSD.

Cable connections are the same as your failed, existing HDD (SATA3 6.0Gb/s data and SATA power), and depending on the physical size of the HDD (probably 3.5" from the specs), you will need a 2.5" to 3.5" caddy.

Best SSDs: Q1 2017

Or, as a direct physical replacement, a 3.5" SSHD would be a good upgrade over a standard HDD (I'd avoid any 5400 rpm drives.)

I love hp products and my laptop, but... The optical drive has performed poorly since purchase. When I load a DVD, it searches and grinds. Data is retrievable, but video does not play. I can retrieve data from CD-R's, but the drive also makes awful noises and is prohibitively slow. The computer is less than one month old. The drive has never worked acceptably. Before the negative experience I rarely used optical media which leads me to my question: Can I replace the DVDRW DU8A5SH SATA with a Solid State Drive or a combo HDD/SSD? Kind thanks for your thoughts and time.

Look at yours.  It has a bend in the middle and it's molded to fit with the lines of the laptop.   Those don't.

Lenovo did make a higher version of the Y570 with a blu-ray drive in it.  My suggestion would be to call service and see if it is available from them.  At least have them give you the part number for it.

My guess is it's going to be too new of a product for it to show up in any parts supply houses yet.

Will be buying Pavilion 510-P079 or P089.  Optical drive is called "Ultraslim-tray SuperMulti DVD Burner". ODD bay on outside is 9.5MM wide (.374" or 3/8"). Can I remove the ODD that comes with the computer, and replace it with an optical drive that is "Lightscribe" enabled that I can purchase on the 'Net (I believe HP makes some, as well as other companies) ? If so, does anyone know the name(s) and model(s)?  --- GREG HUTCHINSON-Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada

Hi all I have a Lenovo Ideapad 310-15ABR and would like to replace the factory HDD with an SSD I already have, but use the HDD as a second drive put in caddy where a optical drive would be. This laptop doesn't come with an optical drive, all it has is a dummy bay / bracket. Can someone point me in the direction of a caddy that I can put the HDD into, I will also need a drive bezel too. Thanks in advance

I want to install a second hard drive into my Lenovo Ideapad Z580 laptop's optical drive bay. I understand that this will require an adaptor caddy, as well as the additional HDD.
But I'm not sure whether just any optical drive bay caddy and any 2.5in HDD will do. The optical drive is a Matshita DVD-RAM UJ8D1.
Can anyone please advise me on how to ensure that I get a caddy which will fit the bay (and an HDD that will fit the caddy)?
Many thanks for any advice.

Answer:Replacing my laptop's optical drive with a second HDD

Best to specify your model. I'm not sure how many adapter variants there are.
Decide on any 2.5" HDD you fancy but check the thickness (Google the model no. if advert doesn't specify)
A thin 7mm drive may need a spacer or a thick one may foul something.
Just in case. Thickness is usually a problem in the main body of laptops. Optical adapters may take the 3 main sizes without problem.

Answer:R61i - Replacing optical drive

for most of the R61i laptop it is removable Ultrabay Enhanced device, there is a little latch with a tiny green led light next to it, you push that then a pull tab pops out, which you pull to release the drive. While some cheaper R61 machine use a non-removable drive, which you have to take apart the laptop to remove.  SO what is the model number of your laptop it should be in this format xxxx-xxx DON'T post YOUR Serial Number. Using that we can determine the actual mechanism that holds your drive.

OK... Here's the situation.

Today, I went onto ebay to find a replacement for my broken slot loading optical drive, and found several with the same model number as mine. One was priced quite low, but the connecting cable differed from mine (most pictured had no cable at all), and I inquired as to whether the cable was removable and could be swapped with my cable. Instead of answering my question, the response was, "This drive WILL NOT work with your laptop."

I do not wish to take my laptop apart needlessly and risk damage (since it is very difficult to get to the drive in my computer), so I'm hoping to get input as to what to look for when replacing the drive. I have a Dell Vostro 2510 laptop with an IDE Sony Optiarc slot-loading optical drive, model number AD-7640A. I didn't look closely to the back of my drive when I removed it, but there is a ribbon cable attached that slides into a connector that latches and holds it in place. Does anyone know if this ribbon cable is likely just plugged into the back of the optical drive, and if all such cables would be? Or do manufacturers ever permanently affix them? So, if I buy a "bare drive" or one with other cable, I could simply remove my cable and attach it to a replacement?

Answer:Satellite L650-10H - replacing the optical drive for a second HDD/SSD?

Hi

First of all I don't know why you want to abstain from ODD... I use ODD always and would not miss it...

Well, some notebooks like Tecra did support such feature.
For that you needed an special enclosure where the HDD would be placed.
This enclosure was placed into the ODD bay.

But I?m not quite sure if the L650 model would support this? Personally I doubt this would function due to the controller on the motherboard.

However, if you want to be sure, I would recommend asking an ASP in your country if a compatible enclosure be available for the Sat L650.

So I have an Alienware Sentia m3200. My brother broke the CD part of the laser assembly. I guess I must replace this.

I was looking around the almighty net and although DVDRW drives are listed as different for different laptops they are very often the exact same size and use the exact same IDE connection.

Can I buy any DVDRW drive that is left-mounted, IDE 50, slim and replace the drive cover with my Sentia's?

If i am remember well your unit has select bay and you can remove the DVD drive very easy. At the bottom side you will find SlimSelectBay release latch. Move it to undocking position and remove gently the drive.

The drive is fixed to SlimSelectBay. I don?t remember exactly how many screws are there but the disassembling procedure is not complicated. Check it!

Has anybody found any free ways of cloning the 1TB SATA drive to a SATA SSD (256gb)? I want to replace the 1TB drive in my system with a smaller SSD, but all the cloning programs I've found either have issues with the hybrid drive setup. Or I can't use them because I have to boot from a CD. I have no optical drive, because my Y500 came with the extra video card in the ultra bay. I figured out how to boot from a USB drive finally, but it gives me an error and says that the EFI security doesn't allow it. I know it's possible, but I can't figure this thing out. Would anybody be able to give me some programs or tips? I'm seriously about to send this back and get a different laptop that has an optical drive. I'd just load up Win7 on it then.

To those in the forum I recently damaged my thinkpad edge laptop 15" after not long ago having to reload every program and everything onto it, it takes me sometimes a week to get things back to normal. It's damaged irrepairably but the hard drive is Ok. I've now bought a thinkpad G570. Can I simply replace the hard drive int he G570, with the pre-loaded harddrive from the THinkpad, and will it just load up and work? The solution that has been offered to me so far ist to buy the sata -usb cable, and attach the old hard drive to the new g570 and go through the one key recovery and transfer the whole system that way. Any ideas would be great. I'd prefer just to swap the new hard drive for the old.

Answer:Replacing Ideapad Hard Drive with Pre-loaded Thinkpad Edge hard drive

Hi, RichardBarclay

Provided the hard drives are the same size and use the same connection, there is no reason that the new computer shouldn't recognize it. And provided the new hard drive is simply removed and not touched until you're sure the old hard drive works, then there shouldn't be any danger in trying. If, for some reason, the old hard drive doesn't work in the new computer, then I would recommend getting a SATA-USB cable to simply transfer the files. And you may want to do that anyway as it is, in my opinion, a useful device to have in case you ever want to transfer data between drives again.

Best of luck,
Adam

Good evening, apologies if this has been covered elsewhere, I have looked but didn't find a similar query. I have owned this laptop for 10 months and recently discovered that the optical drive doesn't work.  The device doesn't appear in the BIOS or on Device Manager, but is powered and if I insert a disc it does whir away but is inaccessible.  I've tried using the hardware detection wizard, but that doesn't appear to find anything and I've tried solutions to do with registry editing which also haven't resolved the issue.  Any suggestions would be gratefully received, thanks for taking the time to read!

Answer:Ideapad 510 15ISK Optical Drive Disappeared

Hi ChrisJR,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Having the optical drive not detected in the BIOS even if the power LED is not would indicate that at the machine level, it does not recognize that there is any optical drive in the system. Initially, the BIOS checks all devices I/O (input/output) as part of POST (power on self test).

Turn off the machine and remove the drive following the steps indicated from the hardware manual here (page 38).
Make sure the contact area is free as you reseat it back to the machine.
Then use the Novo button (item 3 page 58) to power on the machine for launching the BIOS / FN =F2 on restart.
Load BIOS default FN +F9 or choose it from the exit tab then save and exit.
Restart and check if the drive is working.

Else you can try the drive on another machine or to replace it with another known good drive if even cleaning it out (air canned blower / optical drive cleaner).

Hope this help answer your query.
Update us how it goes.

Regards

Bought the Y500 with the i7 3632qm chip, dual hd and the blu ray and 16gb ram but the blu ray drive never worked - Lenovo first sent the wrong replacement drive - finally the drive that arrived today looks correrct but cannot remove the original drive according to instructions - there must be another step so if anyone can help me would much appreciate it. Also, am so disappointed with Lenovo service or should I say non-service that I told the last rep they make Dell look good - the reps don't even give the correct phone numbers and nobody respects the buyer - always check for themselves and then make mistakes - I've lost about 20+ hours and Lenovo won't compensate  me for that and then puts a charge on my card for the replacements - where is the justice? So just am praying that this is not a total mistake after reading the forum - and if anyone can help me, thank you.

Hi,I have ideapad z500 (no touch), I noticed there is a grinding noise for 4-5 seconds during startup. This grinding noise is coming before lenovo boot logo, after this it runs normal without any noise. If I eject the drive and boot the device the noise is not coming, so I am sure its coming from the optical drive only.Is there any solution to this problem?

Answer:Ideapad z500 Optical Drive noise on startup

The noise could very well be an indication that there is a problem with the drive.  During the initial boot up the system will poll all the hardware devices.  The noise could be from the spindle motor momentarily being powered up or with the read / write head thrashing.  I would try leaving a blank CD or DVD in the drive and see what happens on the next boot up and if the noise is more or less.

In the event the drive needs to be replaced, you can contact Lenovo Support and see if they will send you out a replacement.

Evening,
Have had this Lenovo ideapad Z570 for a few months now and have had no issues up till now. Have been going through importing my music via the blu ray cd drive. Every so often a CD would get stuck and iTunes would not progress that song any further and the disc would not eject, the only option that worked was to restart the laptop and then it would eject.
Now the strange thing is on some CD's we have imported the playback is not clear, sounds like a vinyl record, either played from the hard drive or direct off the disc. However, if I play this disc on my xbox, no problems, sounds as clear as it should.
The even stranger thing is, this only seems to effect some discs. I can put the same disc that has the distorted playback on and each time it will sound wrong for that disc, even though this disc plays fine on other systems. And then some discs will import and play and sound as they should on the laptop. It's like my laptop is deciding which music it likes!!
The drive spinning until you restart continues to be a problem too for discs it doesn't like.
Drivers are up to date. The drive is named 'Slimtype BD E DS6E2SH' in device manager.
Any questions please ask!
Cheers,
Dave.

Hello all, I've had the IdeaPad y510p for a while now. It is the model with dual graphics, 16 GB of RAM, and the 1TB HDD + 24GB SSD combo. (If you need me to be more specific, just let me know). The 5400 rpm hard drive has been slowing this machine down and I recently purchased a 512GB SSD. Is this compatible with the laptop? From my little knowledge of hard drives, I assumed it was and picked it up. Also, how would I go about cloning my PC so that everything can be copied to the SSD, including recovery partitions and boot files and all that stuff. And one last thing. Is the 24GB SSD separate or part of the 1TB HDD...in other words, can I keep the secondary, smaller SSD in as well?  Thanks in advance!

Hi Imjustaguy,

This is one Y510p HDD and SSD Combination

ST1000LM024 BP 9.5MM 5.4K 1T HDD

LITEON LSS-24L6G NGFF 24G SSD

The HDD and SSD are separate.

And the Drive you posted will work as an HDD replacement the size fits and the SATA version SATAIII will work as well. You can also check the SSD Manufacturer's compatibility chart for the Y510p

About cloning your drive up to the Recovery Partition, You can use Aomei

the thing is not Im not sure if your current HDD will fits in the 512 SSD, This depends on the USED space on the Current HDD. I strongly recommend to perform a Recovery on the OLD HDD before coloning it.

I'm going to be replacing a 500 GB hard drive with a 1 TB hard drive in a ThinkPad laptop. I created an image of the 500 GB drive using Macrium. It contains C:/, D:/ and a recovery partition. I will be extending the size of the C:/ and D:/ partitions and have read that the size of the recovery partition should not be changed or it will become inoperable. Just checking here to make sure that information is correct. Thanks.

Answer:Recovery partition size when replacing a hard drive using an image

Scuttlebutt has told me that one can restore a partition onto an equal-size or greater-size partition; one can restore an entire hard-drive X-size onto a target hard-drive x-size or larger. Quick example: I have restored an OS image from a 465GB partition onto or into a 467GB partition. I found it best to "parallel" the target HD to match the source HD -- quick example: OS/465GB-C, Data/467GB-D source was successfully restored onto OS/467.8GB-C and data/467.7GB-D. Just before restoring, I split the whole 931GB/1 giant C into 467 C and 467 D. What brought all of that on -- I was in a hurry, and totally toasted my hard-drive logically [not hardware-wise]; I fixed it all with the abovementioned steps.

How to obtain the four screws that secure the caddy to the laptop body?
(Not the screws that keep the HDD inside the caddy.)
Does anyone know the specification for these screws, and where I can buy them?
Thanks in advance.

Hi guys, i wonder if you can offer any ideas here. I have a brand new T420s which came with an optical slot place holder piece of plastic. I removed this and popped in a 'Lenovo DVD Multi IV DVD Multi Recorder CD-RW' P/N 45N7453. It clicked into place fine, but the power light on it does not come on and the eject button does not work. This same drive works fine in 2 other T420s laptops my colleagues have, so the drive is ok. I tried disabling the optical drive in the bios, rebooting, re-enabling, rebooting but nothing. Is there anything else i can try or would you say its a board issue and i'm stuck with it ?

I'm thinking about replacing the factory CD/DVD drive that came with my W530 and lives in the stock 12.7mm Ultrabay caddy, with a 12.7mm slim BluRay burner (say something like this Panasonic UJ-265).  Since the thickness matches, I believe this is possible.

So, can the factory Ultrabay caddy be removed and completely replaced with a fixed SATA BD drive like this?

If so, is there a SATA cable problem?  In other words, do I need a SATA-to-SlimlineSATA adapter, both for data and power, such as this item (which is shown on the same Amazon page as the UJ-265)?

Has anybody done this?  Do you have any suggestions and/or recommendations I haven't thought of?

thanks for any help or guidance you can provide.

Answer:W530: Can I replace the factory 12.7mm Ultrabay caddy and CD/DVD drive with 12.7mm BluRay drive?

The connector looks right.  If I were GUESSING, I would say that it will probably work, but it won't fit into the mechanism that locks the drive in place.

I'm planning on upgrading to a larger SSD in my T400. It originally shipped with a 1.8" 64GB Samsung SSD and I'm probably going to upgrade it to a 2.5" 7mm Samsung 840 (non-pro) SSD.

I'm not sure if the current caddy in the T400 is going to fit the new SSD, or if I'll need to purchase the 2.5" caddy. If so, does anyone know the FRU # of the caddy I'll need?

Answer:T400 SSD Upgrade Question Do I need a new drive caddy? My machine shipped with a 1.8" drive.

you would need a normal 2.5 inch hdd caddy. The one that goes into the T60 and T61 will do, and cost like 4 dollars on ebay.

I have a hotswap caddy in my Vista Dell PC and need a new hard drive to use in it.
So far I have only used 1 TB drives with it.
Is the physical size of a 3Tb drive the same as 1Tb or Tb drives, and will it go into the caddy?
Will a Dell XPS 435MT (i7 920)with Bios 1.1.2 running 64bit Vista SP2 OS be OK with a 3TB drive?
sorry, I can't find how old the PC is : maybe 3 years?
Thank you!.

My primary HDD was failing so I backed it up and replaced it with a larger 1TB drive.  After reinstalling everything the new drive is displaying the same size as my old drive and the extra space available is unallocated.  I can allocate it as
a separate drive but I find that annoying and would prefer to just have my primary C: drive show up with all of the available space.  I formatted the extra space and made it available separately as drive G hoping that I could EXPAND drive C but that option
is not highlighted as selectable on drive C for some reason.  Should I just live with this extra space or is there a way to easily combine C and the new G space?

Hi all,I've just bought a icy box caddy and a hard drive to setup for a mate an external back up device. However, my brother has just bought a Lacie external hard-drive and suggests it's better/safer to use/handle than a do-it-yourself caddy & drive as the "proper" external drives better protect and against knocks and stuff.(We don't want to take his kit apart and check as it'll void the warrenty.)What's the score? Is there any truth in this?

Answer:External Hard-drive Vs Caddy & drive???

No, an external drive is just as at risk as a drive in a caddy.I myself prefer the icy box rather than an external drive for the simple reason that you can change the disk in side and internal disks are cheaper than external. Also, is good for when when friends need to retrieve their from dead computers that they haven't backed-up!

Ok so basically i see dvd drives that replace the optical drive and allow you to put a 2nd hard drive on things like laptops.

The issue is i want one for a desktop as the ones i am finding are too small to fit in one of my desktops. Normally there is more than 1 expansion slot for an additional hard drive on MOST desktops but this isn't the case for mine as i am using a sff model and well the only way to add another hard drive is to take off my optical drive and swap it with some sort of expasion.

Anyone know where to buy one of these for a desktop optical drive as the ones for laptops are smaller

Very confused about what the recommended HDD Caddy for T430 is. (to swap DVD drive with a 2nd HDD)Also, is there a non Lenovo HDD that works with this? 1 TB drive preferred.Thanks.

Answer:Hard Drive Bay (Caddy) and drive for T430

Ultrabay caddies come in two thicknesses, 12.7mm for T430 and T530 (0A65623), and 9.5mm for T430s (43N3412.)

You can buy these from Lenovo or you can get "clone" caddies quite inexpensively on eBay, e.g. 9.5mm Bezel SATA 2nd HDD Hard Drive caddy bay for T400s T500 T410s X200 is $10 for a 9.5mm unit. This is what I have in my T430s. A 9.5mm caddie will fit into your T430 but will leave a small gap at the top. You can search to see what 12.7mm caddies are available.

I haven't tested the clone caddies with HDDs larger than 500GB. There's no reason they won't work. Note that the HDD must be no thicker than the caddy in order to fit physically. Since you have a T430 with 12.7 Ultrabay opening this shouldn't be an issue for you either.

I purchased a W530 and immediatly swapped out the included hard drive for an SSD. I also purchased the drive bay adapter and planned on moving that original drive to it, but it did not come with a drive caddy. If the drive bay does not come with an extra one, and hard drives do not come with them.... why was it not included? Where do I purchase one? Does it need those rubber sides that are now around the SSD?

Answer:W530 Drive Bay Adapter and Drive Caddy

Hey Chuntley,

If you search around the forums you will find a lot of post on this or close to this subject about installing a second drive to W530.

Here is a link to one such post.

I am confused about the customization page of W510. Optical device: Multi Recorder Optical Drive. Can it write/record blu-ray disc? There is no explanation or no other device to select. If it can write/record blu-ray disc then it is ok. If not then how can I add a blu-ray recorder/writer in my customization? There is no option to select such device there.

Answer:About W510 Optical device: Multi Recorder Optical Drive

The blu-ray drives have disappeared from the option screens. When I bought my T400 it was available for an extra $400 or something. No idea if it will be back.

I installed a second hard drive in place of the DVD drive and now when my computer is plugged in it won't charge (it says plugged in, not charging).  I can't imagine that the power adapter isn't able to handle a second hard drive because I've seen plenty of people that said they put two hard drives in their w530.  Is there some kind of driver or setting that I need to reset to make this work again?  I'm on windows 8.1 by the way so a lot of the solutions I've found by googling do not apply to my system.

I have a sony vaio VGN-NR330E that I have just bought a new hard drive for (doing a fresh install of vista) and the internal optical drive spins up but won't boot off the cd, and after a blinking cursor says O/S not found, so i tried it on an external usb drive, and it didnt boot, same black screen followed by O/S not found. I tried booting from a knoppix live cd that worked on another computer and it wouldnt boot either. I have no idea of any what to do, since it wont boot off of an external HDD internal optical drive, external optical drive, and any help is greatly appreciated.

Answer:sony vaio vgn-nr330E won't boot to any external drive, or internal optical drive

What are the current boot options...as set in your BIOS?

http://www.ehow.com/how_8022156_change-bios-settings-sony-vaio.html

If not listed as the first boot option...it's unlikely that the system would boot from either drive.

I have an Alienware Aurora R6 and am frustratingly trying to upgrade the optical drive to one that can read Blu-rays. Does anyone know what drive size specs I should be looking for? It's a low profile drive that is even smaller than a standard laptop optical drive. I tried posting this to an existing Aurora R6 article (https://www.windowscentral.com/how-upgrade-alienware-aurora-r5-and-r6), but my reputation here isn't high enough to post to older articles. Thanks any help.
Background in case anyone's interested: When purchasing this computer the only spec*they showed was that it was a 5.25" drive. Assuming it would be a full sized 5.25", I ordered the system with the least expensive DVD option, meaning to switch it out with the Blu-ray drive in my old system. This, of course, didn't work, so eventually I ordered a low profile Blu-ray drive meant for laptops. The slot in the case is too small even for this drive. What grinds my gears about this is that it's obvious that the internal bay (silver*metal part) is big enough for the laptop drive. It's the outer case (black metal part) and front bezel that are the obstructions.

H Guys,Need help with this one. Got three Dell Latitude C810 Laptops and all three are coming up with the same message. Primary Hard Drive: NoneFixed Optical Drive: Not installed.I am very comfortable around computers / laptops  and thought I knew my way around them until now.The hard drives are all brand new 40GB IDE hard drives that work fine on other laptops (tested them). The laptops have the HD adapters fitted before I installed them in the laptops. Even bought three replacement adapters - just in case. Did not make any difference. When the units power up, they go through POST, spend ages on the splash screen and the error messages come up.The HD and Optical Drive is not registering in BIOS.I read somewhere to take out the battery, unplug laptop from mains and hold power botton for 30 seconds or so. Tried that no luck. Also read somewhere to have the Caps, Num and Scroll keys all on in or before going into BIOS and do the Alt+E, Alt+F and Alt+B. The Alt+B combination was supposed to be held until the laptop reboots itself. Held them down for almost a minute and nothing happened. Laptop did not reboot. The Alt+F did reset the Laptops Bios to default setting and dates, and nothing more. They still did not register the HD or Optical Drive.I have swapped out HDs, DVD ROMs, with or without battery, Swapped out RAMs - ram memtest on another laptop. They all came back okay. This is really thrown me and I'd realy appreciate some assitance.Cheers guys.KS

Hi all,
New to the forum.
I have an Dell Inspiron 15-5558 and am wanting to swap the optical DVD drive for a Sandisk Ultra II 240GB ssd for the operating system.
I'm quite newbie with modding hardware so just wondering what I would need apart from the hard drive itself.
I know I'll need some sort of bay to hold it in but does anyone know where I would source one to the same specs as the drive so the case is all flush

Answer:Swap Laptop Optical Drive for Solid State Drive

You will probably need some sort of Tray and it's likely to be smaller than the Standard Hard Drive

I was given a pc (asus K8N-E) the problem is that although it powers up, mobo light works cpu fan spins and system fan spins front panel lights work, the hard drive and optical drive wont power up unless i disconnect the IDE cables, when disconnected the hard drive spins and the light on and drawer on the optical drive work. its as if the IDE is somehow disabled, i have tried different cables but to no avail any help appreciated.

Answer:Hard drive and optical drive only work when IDE cables are disconnected

hi

check that the cables are plugged in the right way round, the red stripe on the cable goes next to the power socket on the device and the board is usually marked pin 1 or has a dot on it.

does it happen when you plug in a single device or only when you plug in both.

are you using seperate cables or are you putting both devices on the same cable.

Hi,

I disabled the optical drive from Windows System folder because it was faulty and slowing down my computer.

However, now, a virus has stopped from starting Windows.

Since this configuration of Windows on the Hard Drive, can I replace the Hard Drive with a new one so it can:

A. Reset my configuration to allow a Windows Installation disk to boot up from the "newly installed" optical drive,

B. Erase any prior infected files I may have had on the previous Hard Drive.

Thank you,

P.S.

The computer is a Dell Inspirion 2200 Notebook.

Fresh install of Windows 10 on Dell Inspiron M5030 from my KLite USB drive where I have only added the correct, workable AMD-4200 video driver to the normal Windows 10 ISO. Windows 10 is functioning properly EXCEPT my TSST DVD+/-RW TS-L633C shows in Device Manager as DISK DRIVE 01 (which of course is not initialized) instead of showing as TS-L633C in DVD/CD-ROM drives.

I have tried the following:

1: Online updating drivers.

2: Hardware and devices troubleshooter. My problem is not recognized.

3: Uninstall CD/DVD drive driver. Restarted the computer, checked the functionality and the same problem exists.

Per device Manager, I have the standard SATA ACHI controller installed but no ATA channels 1, 2, 3, or 4 and no Standard ACHI 1.0 Serial ATA driver. Since Dell has not "approved" the M5030 for Windows 10, there are no drivers on the Dell M5030 Support website for Windows 10.

Can someone please give me some help please so that I can solve my problem?

Thank you very much.

A moot point now. Tried to update BIOS -- MB died and the unit now has the very common 7-Beep error code when trying to boot.

Hi all, I've recently bought a second hand Lenovo Z580 and the optical drive needs replacing. I've looked up the hardware maintenance guide and it lists the following: ODD, 12.7MM Rambo, PLDS DS-8A8SH
ODD, 12.7MM Rambo, PSN UJ8C1
ODD, 12.7MM Rambo, Optiarc AD-7740H
ODD, 12.7MM Rambo, TSST SN-208ABI'm not interested in Blu-ray combo replacement so I haven't listed those. My question is, do I have to get one of the drives listed above or can I get another brand as brand new is cheaper (see below)? https://www.businessdirect.bt.com/products/liteon-8x-internal-slim-dvd-rw-black-oem-ds-8acsh-BY5D.ht... I understand I would need to swap the bezel around :-) Thanks

Thanks for any help in advance, Pete

Answer:Z580 Optical drive (DVD drive) replacement advice?

Hi pete_agreatguy  ,

Greetings.

As Optical Drives are mostly universal , your choice most likely would work as SATA interface. 12.7mm height .
Challenges would only be the fitting with the mounts so do check for return option just in case.

For other resellers, it would be better if there a mention of workable model for match for chassis fittings  .
12.8 cm x 12.6 cm x 1.27 cm (LiteOn 8x Internal Slim) 128 mm x 12.7 mm x 126.1 mm (Sony)BD-5750H as one from the manual .

Hope this helps.

Regards

I have two identical hard drives connected as master and slave on primary ide channel, and two optical drives on secondary ide. The problem is that the slave hard drive will only run in pio mode, and not udma mode 5 (as the primary does). The upshot of this is that any file transfer to or from my slave drive results in 100% cpu usage, and it's very annoying. As I have an uptodate motherboard do you think that putting a hdd on each ide channel with optical as slave would speed things up?
