I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

We have found recently that our Windows 8.1 clients are unable to connect to Server 2012 R2 shares (SMB 3.02). When trying to browse to them in Explorer we get "Windows can't find <UNC path>". Windows 7 clients can still connect to these
shares, only our 8.1 clients are affected. Attempting to access using the IP address instead of the host name makes no difference.
The 8.1 clients can still connect to shares on 2008 R2 servers. Server 2012 R2 to Server 2012 R2 also works.
No changes have been made to the clients or to the group policies which control them that could readily explain this issue.
Any advice on where to start troubleshooting this would be appreciated.

I have a Windows Server 2012 R2 domain in the dmz. I have a Windows Server 2012 R2 domain in the network. I can access the one in the network to the dmz without a problem, but I cannot access the one in the dmz to the network. The ip addresses in the network are different than the ip address in the dmz. I fowarded the ports but the dmz box still gets blocked. I tried to do it by VPN after setting the router to accept VPN. The connection still gets blocked. I set all the firewall settings.

I'm not sure where to go from here, any help would be appreciated.

Thank you

This was originally posted in the Server 2012 forum, but perhaps it's more applicable to Windows 7.

I've joined the Windows 7 Pro workstations to the Domain using the SERVER2012/Connect app and that seemed to work fine.  I made the Users all Standard, not Admin, and access to the Shared folders is working fine too.  Users appear to be in the
Administrators group on the local machine, which is what I need.
However, a number of our applications aren't working correctly ... one writes changes to HKey Current User and those changes will not stick.  Some IE sites that require changes have to be made each time; those changes don't save.  Some
of the ODBC connections to SQL databases are behaving strangly as well.  I tried checking permissions on the Windows Registry keys, and they looked OK.  Turning off User Access Control did not help either.
If I log on to the workstation not using the Domain Account I don't have this problem.  And, one of the workstations which had performed the Windows 10 Upgrade while connected to the previous Domain Controllder works fine.
Any direction would be greatly appreciated!   Thx DMiller

I've been surfing for an answer a few days now on "How to connect windows 7 to windows 2000 server Domain.> I already added the Computer Name and User on the Server.> I already changed the "Network security: LAN Manager authenticaion level" and "Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including secure RPC) Clients  and Servers."> I disabled the Firewall on Windows 7.*** I'm just a Beginner on Networking ******The weird thing is, I can see the Computers on the Network and I can Open the Shared Folders on the 2000 server, but when I open the Sub-Folder it hangs (Using Quad-Core, Windows 7 Pro and not part of the Domain). But I have another computer running in Windows 7 Pro with Core 2 Duo processor and can easily open the Folders on the Server with no problem at all. I don't know why is that happening.***I hope you can help me.Thank you.

Answer:Can't connect Windows 7 Pro to Windows 2000 server Domain.

I know you have add the computer name and user name on the server, but you did not join the computer to the domain. Therefore if you try to access the share on the server, actually it accesses with an account of the server system. If you log on with Administrator in Windows 7, you need to set the password the same as the Administrator's password of the Windows 2000 system.
Also you need to change the NTLM authentication level in Windows 7.
Network security: LAN Manager authentication level
Please change the NTLM authentication level to ?Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated?. Please refer the following article.Arthur Xie - MSFT

Hi
I have a strange problem I cant workout. It started with a new customer RDP 2012 server which we could not connect to an app once logged in.
If on an external PC it works OK.
If I create a fresh PC on our LAN it works.
If I this PC to the domain, it works.
If I move the PC to a UK Specific OU it stops working
If I move back out of the OU it still does not work
If I remove from the domain and do "GPUPDATE /FORCE /BOOT" and reboot and log backon as local admin account it still does not work!!
So there seems to be something in particular on the GPO in the UK OU in AD which causes the problem but even after moving the computer out it seems to store this mysterious setting and fails to work unless reimaged.
Any suggestions besides adding each option one by one in test GPO/OU????

Hello,
I created the following performance counter using logman.exe.

logman.exe create counter US_Triton_Perf_Log -b 9/23/2015 09:30:00 -e 9/30/2099 18:30:00 -r -s $server -si $frequence -cf $folder\$server.txt -f $logtype  -o C:\local\logs\Perfout_$Server --a -v mmddhhmm  -rf  $max_duration

When I do this across multiple servers specifically for Windows Servers 2008/2012, the counter is created to repeat and run everyday at 930PM and stops running everyday at 430PM. This works perfectly fine as intended. However, When I do this for a Windows
2003 server, my created counter is very different.
For example, in this case, I have set to the counters to start at 930AM and end at 1830PM, because I have set a maximum duration of 9 hours, the job terminates and begins on the next day, since I have the repeat option on. However, this does not apply to
our 2003 server; logman creates the job to run once a week in this case it would be on a Wednesday. In addiiton, I noticed that the job doesn't not even start at it's indented time. It actually does not start at all. I also notice that the jobs on all windows
2003 servers are created in a pending status, which then prevents me from removing the counter remotely.

I would like to know if windows 2003 is capable of working like my win 2008/2012 servers using logman, and if historically, the job has to be kicked off through scheduled task.

Both Jobs are using the same criteria, but a... Read more

Download Windows 10 Client Connector Update for Windows Server Essentials 2012 R2 as it now available at Microsoft.

Windows Server Essentials Connector is software that helps you connect your PC or Mac client to Windows Server 2012 R2 with the Windows Server Essentials Experience server role enabled. It also enables and manages key client-side functionality of Windows Server Essentials Experience. On a PC, it provides client backup, a tray icon and the Launchpad, the Dashboard for management of remote servers, and a VPN profile with the capability of auto-dialing and monitoring client health from the server side. On a Mac, it provides health monitoring and the Launchpad.

Get it from Microsoft here.

Hi there

Believe it or not if you can "Legally" get hold of a copy of Windows 2012 server (current release candidate freely downloadable and valid till Jan 15 2013) you could be a LOT better off using this on a Desktop rather than the W8 itself.

Before people point out complexities of using a Server as a desktop OS it's actually EASIER with Windows 2012 server than with previous servers such as Windows 2003 or Windows 2008 servers to "convert" to a desktop OS.

You basically have to do the following to make a server as user friendly as say W7 or W8 as a desktop OS:

1) dismantle all the domain security stuff
2) remove prompts like event log for server re-boots
3) remove the CTRL-ALT-DEL key for logon
4) remove the security restriction / nag you get every time you want to access a non Microsoft web page with IE 10.
5) remove the "Complex password" requirement.

That's got rid of the main nags and inconveniences of using it as a Desktop (or laptop) OS.

Now add Desktop / Laptop experience (Multi-media, "thematic" backgrounds, customisation).

1) enable SOUND -- yes W2012 server unlike W2008 server has fully blown SOUND capabilities (strange in a server --maybe now I can use Hyper-V with vM's and pass SOUND to them !!).

2) enable DESKTOP EXPERIENCE -- this allows W7 themes to be installed and greatly "De-Uglifies" the bog standard bland grey desktop.

3) enable incoming RDP connections if you want to access your "Server... Read more

Does anyone know if there is a place to download the newest version of these templates for Windows Server 2012 (NOT R2) - if they even exist?

Dear all, Is there anyone here knowing how to solve my problem? I have Lenovo M70z with 4 GB RAM, and Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. A few days ago I tried to increase the memory to 8 GB, but after the memory is installed, this machine couldn't boot. After several trials with memory and other computers, I got the conclusion that its display adapter / vga card does not support 8 GB RAM. If I use default vga driver, it can boot. I have downloaded the newest driver from Lenovo's site, 64 Bit driver, still got the same problem, it couldn't boot. Any suggestion for this problem?Thank you.

On a brand new ASRock A75 Extreme6 with an AMD A4-3300 Llano APU, 4GB DDR3-1600 Corsair, 4x Seagate 2TB drives, and 3x Samsung 2TB drives, I am able to install Windows Home Server v1, WHS 2011, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Windows 7 without a hitch. Despite being an A4-3000, it's actually a pretty snappy processor, probably thanks to the Radeon HD6410 integrated GPU.

But when it comes to Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012, the installation freezes at the first blue Windows logo screen. I use a thumb drive to install Windows - the very same thumb drive I used to install two other Windows 8 machines. I tried every USB ports in that computer with the same results, but I don't think it's the USB port because I install all of the other Windows operating system using USB as well (I didn't install a DVD drive in that media server).

I tried waiting for awhile in case it's just slow. When Windows 7 first came out, my game rig also took ages to install until a BIOS update fixed it, but still, that "ages" was just 60-70 minutes. The blue Windows 8/2012 logo sits there all night long and the light on the USB flash drive isn't blinking anymore, which indicates it's not being read.

Anyone have any idea what I might need to do to get the installation working? Tonight I'm going to check on the BIOS version and see if there's any new updates for it.

There has never been an upgrade path from a client to a server version of Windows. You must do a clean install of the server OS.

Sais here, Install more than one operating system (multiboot) - Windows Help

I should install the older operating system first, windows 7, to run a duel boot with windows 2012 server.

But I am already running 2012 server and would like to just install windows 7 to it. Surely it will work.

I was going to shrink my c volume to create a new partition within my c hard drive and install windows 7 to that.

Or I could just install it to another drive, which I'd prefer not to do. Any advice regarding possibility of doing this?

I presume this is similar to installing windows 8 first and then wanting to install windows 7 afterwards as a duel boot.

Please advise further, cheers

It used to be that way with XP, but you`re fine to install 7 after Server 2012.

Personally, I would get another drive, hard drives are cheap and 7 deserves its own.

Hi everybody.
I have a problem accessing the shared resources of a Windows Server 2003 domain controller from laptops with Windows Vista (different versions, same problem).
I can easily and rapidly access all the shared resources of all computers on the network, while accessing to shared resources on the server takes long, long, long time, no matter if I use a cable or wireless connection, no matter if my computer is part of the domain or not.
My laptop is a dual boot system with Windows XP Professional SP2 also installed, and there is no such problem accessing the same resources from Windows XP.
Thank you for any suggestion.

Hello, all!

I am preparing to get a Windows Server set up in the near future here at a mission school I just started working at.

Here's what I am planning on running:
Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V, under which I will run 3x virtual machines (Server 2012 Standard, pfSense, and Untangle).

Since I am needing to get this implemented as soon as possible, I am trying to decide what to do, considering Windows Server 2012 R2's release is just around the corner.

I'm wondering... Is 2012 R2 going to be a completely different OS, in that you need to purchase a separate license key to run it if you already have 2012? Or will it be more like a service pack?

Also, can the preview version be upgraded to release once it is released?

The reason I am asking is that I am needing to get this set up as soon as possible, and need to know how to proceed. Should I use Hyper-V preview and Standard preview (if there is one... Only seen datacenter so far) then upgrade to release and purchase licenses, or is there something else that would be preferable?

Thanks!

Answer:Windows Server 2012 to 2012 R2 Questions

2008 R2 and 2012 R2 are new operating systems that require you to purchase them. I believe 2012R2 has gone RTM recently, which means in a few months you should be able to get it.

There are a lot of VM improvements in 2012, and even more in 2012R2. If you're just running a basic setup it's not needed to hold out for, unless you're not under any time constraints, then why not. Here is a list of the major R2 features.

I'm not sure how well pfSense and Untange will run in a Hyper-V VM. The Gen 2 VM and improved Linux support of R2 may be needed for better operation.

Is there any iSCSI (or similar technology) software that allows mounting of a hard drive or a folder as an iSCSI share? Windows Server 2012 appears to only allow creation of a virtual drive rather than utilizing a physical drive or filesystem folder. I've read that such can by done with Linux.

I'd like to mount my networked drives to appear as physical drives instead of network drives on my Windows 8 systems.

You should be able to use iSCSI or NFS on the 2012 server and then mount the drives in windows 8, both should show as "local" drives rather then as a CIFS share. You need to add the iSCSI and/or NFS roles under add roles and features wizard in 2012.

Hi there,

I am testing some of our computers on our school system and got to the stage of joining it to our domain. They joined fine but the domain had never been connected to vista or windows 7 so it tried to upgrade itself. This crashed the server because it only had permission to change the sub domain. Is there any way to join without this effect happening or could someone at least tell me in more detail what happened?

Answer:Connecting Windows 7 to Windows Server 2003 Domain.

Which server version(s) are you running over there? Server 2003 or Server 2003 R2?

I work in IT at my uni, and we have an eclectic mix - but I have joined countless machines here that are running Vista to the AD (previously it was Server 2003, but we recently (2 months ago?) upgraded our DCs to 2003 R2 - and have never had this happen before....

however, I could talk to our network admin tomorrow to see if he had already previously performed some sort of patch to allow for Vista based machines to join the domain....

Hello all,
I am currently having an issue with one Windows 7 PRO pc(fully up to date windows and drivers) accessing one windows server 2008 share. This particular server 2008 share is accessed by about 20 users that have no issues accessing this share. I can see the file if I browse to the network share via \\192.168.x.x\share.
When I browse to \\servername\share it displays one folder out of 100. I can resolve the server name by I.P. and FQDN. I can see other network shares just fine on this server also. Firewall is off and AV is uninstalled on both servers. This is the case for all users on this pc including domain admins. I have un joined and renamed this pc from the domain as well. I'm at a loss and any help is appreciated.

Windows 7 shows a message when starting, telling that it couldn't connect to a service. This is related to Groups.
I followed directions from MS support, didn't seem to work. (My Windows is a Spanish version)

Answer:Windows couldn't connect to a service

It would be good to attach a picture so we can see what the message says. May I ask, have you installed any software recently? Did this message come up before or it just starting coming on recently?

I have windows 10 now and my computer takes forever to go on my homepage. It says 'windows couldn't connect to group policy client services. prevents standard users from signing in'. It also takes a long time to sign out and google chrome takes forever to come up. Windows edge sometimes works a little faster. I wish I never accepted windows 10. My daughter moved away to university and I'll never be able to figure out how to fix this. I tried to use the windows 10 app 'contact support' but it didn't work.

Is it just me or are some company's forcing people to update. We are still using a Windows server 2003 R2 which is the companys Domain/DNS/DHCP/File Server and Exchange. I upgraded all workstations from Windows XP to 7 earlier this year. What should I do. I'm already pushing to move Exchange to Exchange 365 in the cloud. SRV1 - IP 10.0.0.5 - FQDN SRV1.DOM.LOCAL - File Share 'FLDR1' / USR1<ReadOnly>

Hey there,

As often said...long time lurker. Recently installed a copy of WS2012 Datacenter I received to play with and learn more about. I have pretty much zero Windows Server background knowledge (I don't count WHS...which I have running as well).

So, my question...I created a Storage Pool, and then a couple Volumes, and then Shares.

My embarrassing noob question...how do I access these Shares?

I can locate the server on my network, and know the IP address of it.

I created a User account so that I don't need to use the Admin account for general use.

My goal:
Access the Share I created from my MacBook Air so that I can read/write files from it.

Thanks in advance for tolerating my WS "noobness."

Answer:Accessing Windows Server 2012 Server Pool Shares

Not sure how to access it from a mac, but on a windows box you can just run \\%servername%\%sharename% and it'll launch it in an explorer window. Should be some sort of network browser on the mac to allow you to type in the unc.

Hello everyone. I really hope that you can help me. You are my last hope.

I maintain about 30 domain computers. Recently when users try to log in on most of them the following error appears frequently:

"Windows cannot connect to the domain, either because the domain controller is down or otherwise unavailable, or because your computer account was not found. Please try again later. if the message continues to appear, contact your system administrator for assistance."

I have seen that this error appears only in the computers with Windows XP and not in the computers with Windows Vista or 7. We have 2 domain controllers.

Please let me tell you about the ways I tried to resolve this problem and their results:

- on some computers, after several restarts the users are able to log in, but if they restart or shutdown after that the error appears again; this worked for some computers, but I do not know if the error will appear again in the future.
- on some computers, when i disabled the windows firewall or allowed all kind of ICMPs it was resolved, but this did not work for all the computers and I do not know if the error will appear again in the future.
- I unjoined and then rejoined some computers from the domain and it was resolved but after restarting the error appears again.
- If I unplug the network cable the users can log in but after restart the error appears again.
- I have tried to reset the user password and computer on the Active Directory for some users and... Read more

Hi all,

If anybody can please help me with the following problem it would greatly appreciated. I have an ASUS laptop with Vista Ultimate as the operating system.

The administration configuration is correct. No change has occurred. Recently when the laptop goes into sleepmode the domain authentication fails, ie the following message appears: “The trust relationship between this workstation and the primary domain failed”.

I have tried changing the power options to prevent sleep mode from happening but it still happens.

Is there any solution to this as this problem is very frustrating and annoying.

thanks

In July, I upgraded my Toshiba laptop from Windows 8.2 to Windows 10. All went well until this past week.
I had been working from my non privileged account. When I logged off, it seemed to take an inordinately long time to accomplish the task.
When I logged back on, after an even longer period of time, I got a message that read,
"Windows couldn't connect to the Group Policy Client service. Please consult your system administrator."
I was unable to log onto my non privileged account.
I was finally able to log on to my administrative account and, by restoring Windows to a week earlier, regain use of my non privileged account. However, a subsequent lengthy log off left me, again, with the same problem and message.
Does anyone know a solution to my problem?
I have seen some solutions offered the same problem for Windows 7 and Windows 8.2. I suspect that those solutions may work for Windows 10 in some form but wonder that Windows 10 may take special consideration?
I am hesitant to screw around with the registry without some assurance that it will work and am somewhat cautious about making registry changes but have done so by carefully following proven instructions.

Hello,

I am trying to use the new Windows 10 Connect App.

I have a Window 10 PC and tablet, both on the latest AU build. I also have a phone with Window 10 Mobile.

On the PC, I connect to my Wifi network, ensure settings are setup (Settings-System-Projecting to this PC) and run the Connect App. I then try to connect using either the phone or tablet. Both see the PC as 'video' device. However, when I connect to them... after a few seconds, both give a generic "Couldn't Connect" message. No way to see any error or reasons.

Both the tablet and phone can connect to a Roku device on the same home WiFi network. The PC is new and the WiFi supports Miracast. I has previously setup AirServer (trial) on the PC and it worked (although connecting was spotty, maybe 1 in 3 times). It has been uninstalled.

Any ideas on how to get the connect app to work or at least see what the error is?

Thanks,
Brett

I've heard it's possible to do some tweaking to essentially turn Server 2012 into Windows 8. I've searched but didn't find anything. Anyone know how to do this or where to look for the info?

Probably very similar to the instructions for Server 2008 to a Workstation.

Doable, but why? You don't gain a whole lot, if anything.

Hello 8forums,

Really great forum here and I'm glad to join. If I posted this in the wrong section I apologize.

Okay now here's my problem. I'm currently trying to setup Windows Server 2012 for my dad. The main thing it will be used for is storage of movies, photos and backing up Excel documents for work. This is a copy a friend burned him onto a disk and is currently NOT activated. He wanted to check it out before purchasing the license. I have installed it onto an old HP Pavilion a1640n and everything went fine with installation but, now that it is installed I cannot connect his Win8 computer to it. I have Googled this and found a method but, it doesn't work. I'm told to open a browser and enter in the address bar " HTTP://Server-name/connect " (Server-name replaced with then name of his server) and I should get a connector software download page. I do not get this software download page I just get a server not found page. I have tried entering other possibilities into the address bar, too (192.168.0.xxx/connect, adding .com etc.) nothing works. If I can get any help with this it would be appreciated.

I have tried:

Completely reinstalled Windows Server 2012
Reinstalled Ethernet drivers on the WS2012 box

Things they may be causing the problem:

As I said the Windows Server 2012 is not activated.
The WS2012 box is stuck on public network type and the W8 box is stuck on private network type.
The WS2012 box does not show up on my network on the W8 box but,... Read more

What version of server 2012 do you have? Also what client operating systems do you have? Windows 7 Home premium, professional, ultimate?

This can affect what services you can offer to clients.

I just installed Server 2012 Standard on my machine and of course forgot that MSE doesn't work on Server.

Anybody know of a good, hopefully free, AV that works on Server 2012?

Answer:AV for Windows Server 2012?

Most of the free av doesn't run on server. As far as paid av for the most part you generally need to use the business version of the software which also generally starts in 5 packs.

To my knowledge ms fixed it so you can't run mse on 2012 as it would install on 08.

Recently we have started to experience some trouble with our server, we will all still be working perfectly fine (via Remote Desktop) then all of a sudden we lose our connection to the server and when i go to see what the problem is, I see the blue screen

If you'd like to know more, you can search online later for this error: SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (TSFairShare.sys)"
If anyone can please assist me in what this means and how to resolve it i would appreciate it seeing as i don't have

I'm finally getting around to doing this.
I'm making a home server running the full version of Windows Server 2012 r2 (free as a student).
The server has been built for a while with a clean install of windows server on it, I'm just now getting to configuring it.

The first thing I want this server to do is to do real time backups of all my pc's and probably sync those with a crash plan account.
Basically I'm just going for data security and redundancy here.
My PC's all use RAID mirrors (except my laptop).
My home/file server will be another local copy.
And CrashPlan will be my offsite copy.

If I can set this server up as a NAS, crash plan has a feature that it will back up files to a folder or another pc, so I could use that to back up to my server, and then the sever backs up to my crash plan account.
Or I have read about WHS having features where it keeps so many daily weekly and monthly backups and images.

Problem is, is that I have never used Windows Server until now and I'm having a lot of trouble with it.
I added a SMB share on the server.
On my desktop I used the command "net use" and added my nas and I can now view it by typing \\NAS in windows explorer but all shared files are inaccessible I can only see root level files.

Other than what I've mentioned I've made very little progress. There also seems to be little information in the way of doing something like this with windows server on google... Read more

Answer:Help Setting Up Windows Server 2012 as a NAS

When you say: On my desktop I used the command "net use" and added my nas and I can now view it by typing \\NAS in windows explorer but all shared files are inaccessible I can only see root level files.

"net use" is used to map a UNC path "\\NAS" to a drive letter...so if you type: net use n: \\NAS\Share

It should map the share to the n: drive...

Are you using a Domain or are you doing everything through local user accounts? You probably don't have permissions setup correctly...if you're not on a domain you have to create and use accounts on the NAS when connecting and you have to setup the correct file and folder permissions for that account...

Answer:T61 - Windows Server 2012 Datacenter

Hello,

From looking at the system requirements here on Microsoft's web site, it looks like the T61 meets the requirements for running Windows Server 2012, but that's largely because Microsoft doesn't seem differentiate between requirements for the Foundation, Essentials, Standard and Datacenter editions.

Personally, I'd suggest going with the biggest, fastest 2012-vintage (or newer) laptop that I could find, such as a W520 or W530.

I have it installed, and it boots to the dashboard, and starts the"Set Up Windows Server 2012 Essentials" dialog, it leads to "Error occurred during Installation" and says to reboot, or save logs, I have a copy of the logs files, if anyone would like them.

Answer:Windows Server 2012 Essentials

re-download and re-install.

I have recently installed windows server onto a spare Hp laptop. I am currently having issues with the graphics with only 640*480 being available. Is there any way I can update the drivers? (I am running server via hdmi to Tv)

Answer:Windows Server 2012 on HP Laptop

Hi: Try the windows 8 graphics driver from the notebook's support page. That would be the only suggestion I can offer.

I can guess the answer, no, but you never know. Is it possible to upgrade Windows 10 Pro 64-bit to Windows Server 2012 R2? What happens if you run the setup from Windows 10 Pro? You will be given the choice to upgrade, or be prompted to restart and do a clean installation? As far as I know, Windows Server 2012 R2 is the server counterpart of Windows 10. They even share most of the drivers. Assuming you have a computer running Windows 10 Pro and want to convert that to a small server, running say Windows Server 2012 R2 Foundation Edition. Is that possible, or you have to format and clean install? Hopefully the drivers will be the same as in Windows 10.

Alternatively, is there any upgrade/addon to add server aspects in Windows 10 Pro (eg mail server, file server or HTTP server)? Is there an equivalent of Windows Home Server for Windows 10?

Thank you for your time.

Answer:Is it possible to upgrade Windows 10 to Server 2012 R2?

No. Windows Server 2012 R2 is the server version of Windows 8.1

The server version of Windows 10 has not yet been released, but it will be called Windows Server 2016.

And no, you cannot upgrade a desktop OS to a Server OS.

Hi everyone,

I've been using a VPN to connect to my home network from elsewhere for a few months. It's set up as follows:

PPTP
Maximum Strength Encryption
EAP-MSCHAP-v2 Authentication
Now I find out that MSCHAPv2 authentication has been broken and is no longer considered secure (even by Microsoft), so I want to change the protocol I'm using to make it secure.

However, I've spent 3 hours now researching this and I cannot for the life of me figure out how to use a better protocol on my Windows Server 2012 home server. I've tried setting up PEAP authentication (still PPTP) a la Microsoft's recommendation document, but it requires a certificate. I've created a self-signed certificate but it seems I can't issue certificates (via this method) without being a member of a domain, so I'm stuck. I can't even get started with L2TP since I can't find the option for it.

My question is this: Is there a way to set up a secure VPN server using Windows Server 2012 without a domain? If so, how do I do this?

Thanks.

tons of threads on win 8, but i want to hear form the Server users their thoughts on Server 2012?

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/server-cloud/windows-server/2012-default.aspx

I have used the 8 beta myself at home for a few weeks now and i am finding it very clumbsy.

it seem that simple tasks before are now burried deep in menu options.

i really want to give it a try and experience it, but i am finding it somewhat difficult..

Some of the new storage features look nice... but how well will they work?

Answer:Windows Server 2012 RC is out... thoughts?

I'm definitely interested in it for the storage features
may choose it over OI/ZFS
haven't gotten around to building my server yet though so no testing

Recently, Microsoft included the Windows Server 2012 R2 RTM on their Dreamspark basic site. Currently, I'm running the R1 version on a virtual machine using VMware Player. How can I upgrade the R1 to R2 while keeping all of my files and settings using VMware?

Do I just boot from the ISO (I haven't downloaded it yet) (CD/DVD settings inside R1 VM) and then it will detect and upgrade R1 or I have no choice but to create another VM and then manually replicate my files and settings from R1 VM? I really don't want to do the latter since it's very time consuming. I hope someone has thoughts on how to do this.

Answer:Windows Server 2012 R2 upgrade over R1?

Wow, I just redirected VMware to the R2 iso and just followed the simple steps and I'm now currently upgrading on VMware. I didn't know it was possible to do that. I'll mark this thread as solved if there are no issues with the in place upgrade. Hopefully, everything works fine.

Update: everything went smoothly and now enjoying Server 2012 R2. Sadly, no colorful backgrounds in R2 unlike 8.1. All of my "3D" Metro App games like Pinball FX2, Jetpack Joyride, etc. work perfectly after the in place upgrade .

My Windows 8 Desktop and Tablet are always getting optional updates for errors regarding Windows Server 2012 R2. I have no idea what that is, and if I should install them. I'm not running a server, so I'm guessing that I can just hide them. Am I right?

Hi Folks,

So we have a couple of 2012 servers here at work. I want to bring them up to date with the R2 build. Our backup software is finally compatible. I know with the 8 to 8.1 update, you just got it thru the windows store. How do I upgrade to R2 without downloading the ISO?

Thanks.

It is an entire new OS.

Pop in disc, format, and go.

You need to purchase licenses for 2012R2 unlike 8 to 8.1.

I have a Synology NAS that I am planning on using as storage for our Windows Server 2012 backups and have a couple questions:

1) I thought I remembered reading that if you are going to use the built in Server 2012 backup that connecting the NAS as an iscsi lun was the way to go, correct?

2) If I create a iscsi target on my NAS, it has to be created separate from the main volume on the NAS? Meaning that I cannot just use all the space and allocate it to the main volume because that would leave no storage space for the iscsi target.

I think that is what I could use some clarification on for now, thanks.

I am going to be doing a much needed upgrade at a office taking them from SBS 2003 to Windows Server 2012 Std. This should be more simple than most as they use it is a domain controller, and file/print server. No Exchange, sharepoint, etc.

They do have one program that uses SQL on the server but I already have a plan for migrating that over.

So, do you guys have any recommended document on how to do this migration? Seems like I can mainly treat it as Server 2003 to Server 2012 and just leave the SBS components out but wanted to check with you guys.

Thanks!

Answer:SBS 2003 to Windows Server 2012 Std

I believe you have to cleanup Exchange from the domain, I used the package from sbsmigration.com when I did my migration (SBS2003 to 2008R2)

My office computer runs Windows XP Professional SP3 (see below), and I'm connected to our new server running Server 2012 Essentials. For the last month or so, at 4:00 every afternoon my computer loses its connection to the server. I have two programs that access the server, and both give me error messages and freeze, and I need to restart to get back to normal. I don't pay much attention to my clock, so I'm typically on the phone with a customer trying to accomplish something when my system has a meltdown.

The same error messages come up each time:

The Security System detected an attempted downgrade attack for server cifs/DELLSERVER. The failure code from authentication protocol Kerberos was "There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request.
(0xc000005e)".

The Security System could not establish a secured connection with the server cifs/DELLSERVER. No authentication protocol was available.
According to the error logs, this happens in the evenings and early mornings too, although not every day. When it does happen during non-work hours, it looks like it's consistently an hour apart (1:10AM, 2:10AM; 4:10AM, etc. or 5:35PM, 6:35PM, 7:35PM). The error will show up 3 or 4 times in a row, then everything will work fine for several hours.

I do not have any idea where to start to fix this. To my knowledge, I'm the only one with this issue, so I'm pretty sure it's a problem specific to my machine

Looking into upgrading my organization from a Windows 2k3 network to Windows 2012 but I'm a bit confused about the licensing requirement...which doesn't seem uncommon, lol. Basically, we have 5 sites, each one with a domain controller and a user account of about 200. Do I need to get 200 CALs or 1000? Im pretty sure 200 is the correct answer but....I just want to make sure, lol.

I highly recommend a call to Microsoft or a reseller to get the correct answer.

Making an assumption that you have 200 devices across all sites, 200 sounds right if per device CALs in use. If per user CALs, 1000.

Again ..contact the source and get the true answer!

I am testing windows 10 pro. I have tried to connect to my corporate office using RWA. the server 2012 returns a message that my browser is not supported (edge) and to download I.E. . how do you get either edge to work with Microsoft server 2012 or install a Internet explorer version that will work with windows 10?

Answer:windows edge and server 2012 RWA

If you open EDGE and select the three dots in the upper right of the window. a drop down menu is displayed. Select open with internet explorer and the internet explorer browser will open. You will have to accept the active x and then set the RWA web page to compatibility mode and now you can connect to the corporate office RWA APP and to your assigned desktop.

Hi there
Will the W2012 Server get the 8.1 type of update --anybody know. There seems to be a deafening silence on W2012 server which IMO is strange as it is STREETS ahead of the really horrible W2008 server.

W2012 server has options though already to avoid the whole metro stuff but it would be nice to add some of the proposed customisation features to it.

I'm also not hearing anything about whether W8 ENTERPRISE will also be upgraded -- IMO this is MORE important even than the HOME versions if Ms wants businesses to adopt W8. Boot to the standard desktop is really a MUST for businesses - by also pinning standard programs to the quick launch task bar and / or the desktop a lot of problems of User training can be avoided.

Cheers

Answer:Windows 2012 server to get update or not - anybody

I am wondering this myself. Also, how will future support work for users who do not upgrade to 8.1? Nothing in 8.1 looks to have much of an effect on someone who uses a SMR and the desktop exclusively. Should I bother upgrading and risk having some type of issue with my work PC?
I recently rolled out a 6 PC trial with Windows 8 and Start8 (Start8 with GPO), and am really concerned 8.1 could break something with GPO or Start 8. Ugg, MS.

Hey guys,

This is the first time using the forum so I apologize if this has been put in the incorrect place. My brother recently installed Hyper V Server 2012 r2, which boots up everytime I start my laptop. I just want help in how to completely remove the software and help get back my Windows 8. Neither me or him know how to get back to windows 8.

Thanks in advance guys.

Answer:Help with Windows Hyper V Server 2012 R2

Well, you must have a bootable Windows 8 DVD or USB. Go to the BIOS settings, select to have the DVD or USB device as first device. Then it should say "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD..." if you have a DVD or it will show the OEM or Windows logo directly (USB). When you are prompted for the installation type, choose Custom. Make sure you have backed up your files. Delete every partition of Disk 0 and then choose the Unallocated Space to install.

I hope this helps you.
