X1 Carbon 5th Gen thunderbolt 3.0 dock not recognizing the external monitor

Question: X1 Carbon 5th Gen thunderbolt 3.0 dock not recognizing the external monitor

Hello Everyone, I am new here so please go easy on me.I just bought and X1 Carbon 5th Gen laptop c/w Thunderbolt 3.0 docking station. The problem that I have is that the docking station won't recognise any of the external screens that are connected.I am using two Acer screens (one is connected using HDMI port on the dock and the other one uisng Display port).I have tried by connecting just one screen but nothing.I can see that Thunderbolt software is installed and its connected to my laptop. The laptop will charge through the docking station and also the wireless mouse and keyboard will work fine through the dock.Lenovo recommended that i should update my drivers. So I installed Lenovo Companion from Windows store. But it won't update my system. After clicking on System Update, I will get an error message saying "There is a problem in reteriving new updates for your system. Please try again later".Hence I downloaded all the drivers from support website and installed them manually but my docking station is still not working with the external monitors. The monitors works fine when connected directly to the laptop using the HDMI cable. Thanks in advance for your help.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I use the Displaylink dock to connect to an external monitor, but it has suddenly stopped working.  The error message said "check connections".  I have done so - replaced the digital video cable between dock and monitor with a new one, cycled both dock and monitor on and off several times, but windows can not find an external display. The Lenovo settings app has been giving me an "updating... " message for 3 days (I have raised a query on that elsewhere) so I can't use that to check out the display problem.  I should say the display problem started today, and the "updating.." problem has been going on for three daysthank you

Just got purchased the x1 carbon 5th gen along with the Thunderbolt 3 dock.  However, the dock will not charge the laptop.  Every time I get the error message "The dock is not supplying enough power to your computer.  Please use the ac power adapter that came with the dock".  I am, in fact, using the ac adapter that came with the docking station.  I have updated the bios as well as all of the other recommended updates and still get the same error message.  Does anyone have a solution?

I have a bug that is fairly repeatable where when my laptop goes to sleep, the USB ports on the Thunderbolt 3 dock are not active when I wake the computer up. I can unplug the TB3 cable and plug it back in to regain access to the ports. Where can I report this issue?

Following installation of a series of optional updates, including a BIOS update, my external display (connected to the USB 3.0 dock/port replicator, ref 0A33972) is no longer detected.  I get an error message "Displaylink USB graphics software is not compatible with this graphics card or operating system.  Please visit www.displaylink.com/software and check if a new software version is available".  However, a newly downloaded driver won't install, giving an error message saying I need to use the OEM driver update system. The Update History showing what I installed yesterday does not include any reference to a Displaylink driver.

Very odd situation. USB 2.0 external drive recognized & mounts fine via 3.0 port, but not the USB 3.0 external drive. And get this, 3.0 drive mounts fine via the USB 2.0 Port on the other side. I've checked the 3.0 drive w/ other computers and it connects fine. Could this be a driver issue? Or is the 3.0 USB port itself mechanically faulty? Connects to 2.0 drive though, so what could be missing that prevents 3.0 being recognized, but has no issue w/ 2.0 drive.......I'm not new to these things, built my first PC in '92, still think Win2K was the best......but nonetheless am totally mystified. Considering restoring a backup, to see if the failure is hardware or software. Help, anyone?

I have the same problem. This is my second problem with this laptop for which one other person on the boards seems to have asked a question and received no answer, so I seem to have a profusion of nearly unique but insoluble issues. In this case, my USB 3.0 port used to work and now doesn't.

Hello,     I have a carbon x1 feb 2014 20A7 with the pro dock.  I'm attempting to drive two monitors throug the dock. A 30" dell res 2560x1600 abd a 24" HP res 1920x1200.  The dell is connected through the display port and works well, however windows 8.1 (64-bit factory default) will not see the second (HP monitor). When I attempt to extend the display it says windows cannot apply this configuration.      If i plug the second display directly into the laptop it connects through the mini display port with no problems.  When I spoke with the customer support representative purchasing the laptop he confirmed the pro dock should be able to drive both displays.  Any advice is appreciated.

Hello, I purchased two external monitors to connect with my X1 Carbon, 1 through the Onelink Dock and the second directly to the laptop's HDMI port. My problem is when I connect the two external monitors only one of them gets detected. For example, the monitor that is connected through the OneLink dock gets detected by the laptop and functions properly; however the second monitor that is connected directly to the laptop does not get detected so I am unable to use it. If I disconnect the OneLink dock (which one of the monitors is connected to) then that monitor obviously disconnects and the other monitor that is connected directly to the HDMI port on the laptop gets detected and connects. Both external screens are connected via VGA to HDMI.  If anyone has encountered this problem before or has a solution so I can run both external monitors simultaneously that would be much appreciated.  Thanks!

Hi,I just got a X1 Carbon 20HR, and the ThinkPad USB-C Dock with it. The issue is, that when I use the dock and have it connected to my external monitor [Samsung LU28E85] then the mouse is lagging a bit - but enough to annoy me and make it harder to reach the right buttons.... This is both when I use a cabled mouse, as well as via Bluetooth or the Logitech connector. I would say thoug, that the cabled mouse seems to perform a little better than the wireless connections. When not in the dock and working on the screen of the laptop, there are no issues with any of the mice at all. There also seem to be a bit of lack with the keyboard entries...... Any advice?I was wondering if it can be the dock which is "underpowered" and should have been the Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock instead? I have you can help Kind regardsLasse

Answer:X1 Carbon 5th Gen 20HR - mouse lag when using External display via DOCK

I have the same issue.I'm using laptop screen + 2x 4k screens, meaning I can only use 30hz on my 4k screens.30hz causes noticebly mouse lag. With only one external screen, you can probably increase your screen refresh rate, which should resolve your issue.

I have a 3 week old X1 Carbon with an external Samsung display (connected via the docking station) that seems to be losing the video signal for a second then come back (no particular action seems to be related to it doing that). The laptop?s built-in display does not switch off and continues showing the extended Windows desktop as it should. Windows is up to date, the power and DV cables are securely attached on both ends and I did a Lenovo update this weekend (including a Bios update), and the monitor's power indicator does not go out. It?s not a ?blocking? bug but it is annoying and, new to Lenovo, I?m worried that it could be a bad sign. Any thoughts?

Answer:X1 Carbon - external display switches off then back on when connected through dock

Hi Mszach,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per your query we understood that you are facing the issue with Screen flickering Switching on & off on ThinkPad.
Please check the power supply you are connected to the dock, is it 135w power supply or 170W power supply.

This kind of issue will arise if the system is not able to provide enough power output to the external device.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,
Hemanth Kumar

Hey Forumers, I searched for my answer but unfortunately found nothing or very little outdated info. Apologies if this is redundant.  I have a W540 from my workplace that I sometimes bring home on evenings/weekends to work from home. I do graphic design work and connect my w540 to an external monitor at work, and I would like to purchase an iMac to use at home and connect my thinkpad externally to its monitor.  I went to the apple store with my w540 and a "genius" connected the thinkpad to a thunderbolt cinema display without an issue, but he couldn't get it to work with the iMac. He said it may be because the imacs in apple stores are all in demo mode and are limited to what they can do. We tried the command f2 and all that and no dice.  Does anyone else run this setup or know if it can be done via thunderbolt?  thanks!

I bought a Dell XPS 13 9350 in December and I wanted to connect it to an external monitor via the thunderbolt port. I bought an type c to hdmi adapter off amazon and it connects. (Actually bought 2 and the problem persists). But occasionally both my screen and laptop will turn black then back on again. This causes my video that i'm playing to either freeze/crash (netflix/youtube) which is SUPER annoying. It goes from occasional to quite often. It's really random.

My drivers are up to date, cable is new and the monitor is new from boxing day.

Any help is appreciated :)

I recently purchased an XPS 15 9550 with i7, 16 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD, and GTX 960m dGPU that I have connected to a 27-inch QNIX qx2710 2560x1440p external monitor. I have this connected through a Cable Matters USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 to DVI-D adapter and cable.
The monitor and everything seem to work fine at 60hz, except for every time I unplug, turn on, or restart the monitor/computer the first five or ten minutes of use is plagued with constant screen flickering and flashing. After ~five minutes the monitor seems to stabilize and will only rarely have a single screen flicker.
I have read other forum threads describing similar issues with different monitors/cable setups and that there is likely an issue between the wifi card and thunderbolt port. The common recommendation is to turn down the wifi output percent to 75%, however the Killer wifi card on this computer does not have an option under advanced settings to turn down the power output. Has anyone had any luck doing this on a recently purchased XPS 15 with the Killer wifi card?
The cables and adapters are new and the BIOS and all drivers are up to date. Other than the wifi issue, does anyone have suggestions or solutions to this screen flickering problem?

I recently got a Dell XPS with Thunderbolt 3 technology for work, but also have a 2011 iMac with Thunderbolt.  I am wanting to use the iMac as an external monitor for the Dell, so I found a Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt adapter to utilize TDM.  However, I have not had any luck making it work when pressing command-F2.  Through my research, I've found that using a pre-2011 iMac with a mini display port and a PC with a mini display port has worked no problem.  I've also found that using a post-2011 iMac as an external monitor with a PC should also work no problem if both computers have Thunderbolt technology.  In addition, I contacted Apple Support and they told me my connections should work since I have stepped the Dell's Thunderbolt 3 down to Thunderbolt, and connected the two machines via a Thunderbolt cable.  I am able to tell that my Dell recognizes the iMac, but have no way of knowing if the iMac recognizes the Dell.  Is there something that I'm missing?  Is there software that would make this work?  Has anyone had success getting this to work?  Any input would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

I can't get the external monitor (aka dual screen) to work on my T60 via the VGA port. My model is currently running Windows XP and has a ATI Radeon X1300 video card. I'm 6 months out of warantee (although this problem started while in warantee but I can't convince Lenovo of that). I've tried the following:- ensuring "extend my monitor onto this desktop" in windows display properties- disabling/enabling Presentation Director and trying all the schemes- setting all different combinations of modes for resolution/colour on both (LCD + VGA) monitor- trying two different monitors and cables (which did work with other computers)- Updating the video drivers (from the Lenovo website) and Presentation Director to the latest versions I then figured it might be a hardware fault, so I tried to see if the external monitor was activated on bootup. I made sure the "LCD + VGA" option on boot was selected in BIOS. Still no joy. Finally, I figured the actual VGA connector was broken so I bought a compatible mini docking station (port replicator) and attached the VGA cable to that and even that didn't work. What on earth could be wrong if it's not the software and not the VGA connector? The video card is working as its powering the LCD display? Is my only option to give it in to repair (I can't afford that)? --MichaelMessage Edited by mstrom on 07-03-2008 04:03 AM

Answer:external monitor simply not working - including with external dock (dual screen)

Hi,Does the external connections and cables work with another system. I'd do that first. If all of it works with another system then it could be drivers or internal things but try that first. There are some driver updates on the Lenovo site. Make sure your BIOS are updated and such.Good Luck,

I am trying to use a 3rd party external GPU enclosure that attaches via thunderbolt, and when attached, I got the message pop-up that external GPU support was not enabled by the vendor, and as such the device will likely not work? Has Dell locked the Latitude 7480 down to no external GPU support?

Answer:Latitude 7480 - Thunderbolt 3 - Thunderbolt software say external GPU support not enabled?

Probably.  I read somewhere that since Dell is pushing their Alienware external GPU stuff that uses a proprietary connection, they never enabled external GPU support via Thunderbolt.

I'm using a T430s and a mini dock plus series 3. This is the dock with the dual DVI, dual DisplayPort, 1x VGA. I do not use the laptop's built-in screen; just the 2 external monitors. Intel HD4000 graphic chip and Nvidia Optimus/ I previously had 2 20" monitors with a 1680x1050 resolution using DVI-to-DVI. They both worked fine. I upgraded to 2 24" monitors with a 1920x1200 resolution. The laptop is not recognizing the second monitor. I have tried:dual display port (dock side) to mini display port (monitor side): only 1 monitor recognizeddual dvi (dock side) to HDMI (monitor side): only 1 monitor recognizedI ruled out monitor and cable problems by swapping...each by itself works fine. Looking up specs, I believe this resolution should be supported by DP or DVI. Can anybody confirm that this is a supported config? Any ideas what is wrong? UPDATE - I did try 1 DP/mDP and 1 DVI/HDMI: this does work. However, its not an ideal solution because it would interfere with the monitors ports which I want to use for a second PC. UPDATE 2 - OK, now I am beyond aggrivated. I also have a support ticket w/ Lenovo where they suggested switching to Integrated Graphics only in the BIOS. I tried that, no luck. After changing that setting back, i tried to get my 1 DP / 1 DVI working, but now it would not recognize dual monitors. ??? After some testing, I'm finding that the -only- setup that works is the following: Dock DVI port 1 to Moni... Answer:Second monitor not detected: T430s with Mini Dock Plus Series 3 dual external monitor

Fixed; was a driver issue. Problem seems exclusive to a Dell u2415 on DP port 1 only of the dock or to the laptop's DP port (at least for the couple monitors I tried). It's possible it could affect other monitors. My starting point: 9.18.13.4535 / 9.17.10.2843 (Nvidia /  Intel) The latest driver from Lenovo is 9.18.13.4535 / 8.15.10.2725. I'm not sure how i have a slightly newer Intel, but that's what it was. I couldn't install the Lenovo driver. I also couldn't install a newer driver from Intel (10.18.10.4276). In both cases Windows or the Intel installer stopped me saying the mfr provided the drivers and that the installed version was up to date. I worked around by first rolling back the Intel driver. The manual (.zip) install of the latest intel driver worked. This immediately fixed the Dell u2415 on DP port 1 and laptop's built-in DP port.

I just switched companies. I've had two other, older versions of Thinkpads. When I plugged them into my home monitor (actually the KVM) via the external VGA port, the thinkpads would automatically recognize it as a monitor and extend the display. It would also keep it there when I was switched away on the KVM and returned. My L430 isn't doing that. It won't recognize the monitor as a monitor. Rather, it forces me to connect to a projector. Worse, it will not remember context. If I switch away via the KVM, put the computer to sleep or hibernate it, the next time the computer is awake and the KVM is switched to it I have to reconnect to the monitor all over again, including moving my windows back to it again. What did Lenovo mess up in that, is there a switch I can change to get the same recognition of an external monitor I've had from two previous thinkpads?

the easiest solution would be to install presentation director, set up a few profiles, and use Fn+F7 to control your display.   in your power plan, set it to power off the display upon lid close but not to sleep.   then use Fn+F4 to put the system to sleep when necessary.

Hi, I think it has DisplayLink sticker or DisplayLink Certified that means you can connect 2 monitors at the same time. It has DP port (6) and HDMI port (5) and you can use both             Side note: From your image, the dock price is US$149.00 + tax (says 7.5%) = around AU$210 but HP in Australia sells for AU$329              Amazing ! AU$100 more for HP Australia for a same product. May be HP has to ship the product from China to the US first then send first class air to Australia. Regards.

I often need to connect my computer to external projectors and monitors.  Normally it works fine - the display automatically switches to extended desktop between the laptop's built-in display the external monitor or projector, but sometimes (about once a week at the moment), when I connect the projector or monitor to the HDMI port nothing happens, and the monitor doesn't show up in any of the display management software - Windows 10 Display Settings, or the Intel HD Graphics Properties or Graphics Options.  Restarting the computer doesn't help.   On four occasions I managed to fix the problem by reinstalling the Display Driver.  Part way through the installation process, the external display would simply start working again.  However, yesterday when it failed to recognize a projector, reinstalling the display driver didn't help. The problem has now happened with three different external displays:- A VGA digital projector connecting via a UGreen HDMI-VGA adaptor- A VGA display connecting via a (different) UGreen HDMI-VGA adaptor- An HDMI monitor connected via an HDMI cable (which subsequently worked) My display adaptor is an Intel(R) HD Graphics 520, and the driver I kept reinstalling was 1131206.inf - sp 74635 Any ideas?  I'm starting to suspect a hardware fault with the display adaptor.  Is there any way to run a diagnostic test on it?

Hello fellow users / Lenovo, In our office we have several X1 Carbons and several ThinkPad USB 3.0 Docks (0A33970) located all over the office. We typically bring our X1 Carbons around and use each other's Dock during the course of work. However, we recently face a problem with the Ethernet interface not working with other Docks, other than the Dock that the driver was installed with. Using other Docks, the Ethernet interface comes up as a generic Ethernet device with a yellow warning triangle inside Control Panel. Using the Dock that the driver was installed with, the Ethernet device works as normal. It should be pretty easy to replicate this behaviour, just get an X1 Carbon (fresh, Windows 8.1) and connect a USB 3.0 Dock to it, and install appropriate drivers.Verify that the Ethernet port works correctly. Next, disconnect the Dock and connect another Dock to the X1 Carbon. Observe that the Ethernet interface does not work, and see the yellow warning triangle icon under Control Panel. Uninstalling and Reinstalling the drivers with the new Dock doesn't work either. Only the Dock that the driver was originally installed with will work.

I know this is a common problem, but so far I did not find a solution to it.  The external monitors connected to my prodock via VGA and DVI blacks out every few seconds, especially during heavy usage. At first, I thought it was a power supply issue so I bought a 90W supply. Now the monitors stays on most of the time, but still blacks out every 10 minutes or so, even during standby with minimal power usage. Then I tried editing the integrated graphics settings, updating/rolling back graphics driver, flashing the docking station firmware with every version I can find, and switching to ubuntu on the other drive, but there wasn't a single combination of settings which would keep the external monitor on for more than an hour without blacking out/disconnecting.  So what should I do now?  System info:i7 5600u, 12G RAM, 16G + 128G ssd, 500G hdd, NO 940M, FHD IPS nontouch screen, Windows 10/Ubuntu 16.04Thinkpad Prodock 04A1, 45W/90W power supply. All USB and audio ports works perfectly. Both monitors are 1440x900 at 60Hz, works flawlessly when attached to laptop VGA port.

I thought there would be a selection for this somewhere but I've searched and can't find it, so sorry if a solution is obvious! Got a T470 and Ultra dock (not the USB one) with an external monitor connected via DVI and left in standby. I want to boot on the laptop only, and then I can extend to the external screen as needed.  Is this possible?  I was using a T61 in a dock before (with Windows10) and that defaulted to the laptop screen.

Answer:Can I boot in dock without external monitor turning on?

If I use my R61 with the Advanced Dock and a PCI-e graphics card, will it show up on my laptop's monitor or is a external monitor necessary? Cna I just use the PCI-e graphics card with my laptop monitor? I"m just trying find a semi-portable better solution then the very weak Intel integrated graphics in my R61?

Answer:R61 with Advanced Dock and PCI-e graphics, is a external monitor necessary?

Well, there has been some success with eGPU solutions. Whether or not the same techniques work with an advanced dock, i don' t know.Theoretically, and this is just an educated guess on my part, the UltraMon mirroring solution should be possible. But someone with more knowledge in this area could confirm or deny this.I'm picking up a R61 today so I'd like to know this too.

Hi Community, I've searched the forums but have not found the exact match to my question. Wich is:I have a T400 with dual gfx, and i can switch between these with PowerManager (using the intel to save power, and the ATI to.. use power... )Today it's setup to use two external monitors connected to my docking station, and what i want to accomplish is athree monitor setup using both external monitors + my laptop monitor. From my experiments it only seems like one gfx can be active at one time, and each gfx can only produce two monitors. What are my options?  Thanks!!

Answer:T400 - Laptop monitor + two external with dock

you only can use one GFX at any time. You can only run 2 monitors at any one time. If you need an additional external monitor whilst running the internal LCD, you would need to get a Lenovo usb2dvi converter.

Symptom - No video on external monitor after docking system while lid is open. When connecting dock connector to laptop while laptop lid is open, the laptop monitor flickers, like its trying to adjust the resolution set in the display properties and i don't get any video to external monitor. This behavior will continue until I disconnect the dock connector cable. My Windows display settings is set to extend montior. My work around. Close the laptop lid (while laptop is powered on), connect the Dock connector and open the laptop lid. Video to external montior and laptop function as design using this sequence but I can't get video on laptop or external monitor while connecting the dock connector when the laptop lid is open.  This behavior started yesterday aftering returing from meeting.  Hardware  - IBM X1 Carbon with Onelink DockOS - WIndows 8

We have a X1 Carbon which works fine using the computer screen, but if you try to attach to an external monitor using the ThinkPad USB 3.0 dock, or the USB to DVI cable, or HDMI only a small square about 3"x3" in the middle of the monitor is active.  If you boot the computer with the monitor attached it will show the correct screen for a moment, and then only the center square becomes active.  We've tried with several different monitors of several vendors including Lenovo.  The monitors are 24" class LED flat screens. It had originally worked fine with these monitors.  Any ideas?

Answer:X1 Carbon issue with external monitor

Hi Dave,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

I request you to install Lenovo power manager application and check with Fn+F7 key, this will enable the function key feature. You can also switch between the monitors by pressing Windows+P keys, but you should have installed the graphic driver to work with this option.

Below is the link to enter the downloads page and install Power Manager application and check accordingly, please click on "Select Product" then in "QUICK PATH" enter the MTM no. select the exact model.

I've done a lot of googling on this but there never seems to be a definitive answer. Currently I have a W530 with a standard dock, and two external screens (I keep the laptop shut): 1: 2560 x 1440 (DisplayPort)2: 1920 x 1080 (DVI) I want to switch to an X1 Carbon Gen 4. The OneLink dock specs say that if two monitors are connected the maximum resolution supported is 1920x1080, so I can't have both of them connected to that. Can I have one connected to the dock and one connected to the internal DisplayPort and still have the main one running at 2560x1440? Or has anyone had two monitors of2560x1440 running at the same time on this laptop (wishful thinking of an upgrade)? I can do it with an X220 I have on loan which is a lot older but has a standard desktop docking port.

I have a carbon x1 and using it with an external monitor has been a huge headache for me. The colors look so extremely washed out on an external monitor that it's essentially unusable. I've tested this with multiple monitors and dongles which all work perfectly with other laptops so I can say with a high level of confidence that the issue is with the carbon x1. I've spent a lot of time modifying the gamma and brightness settings but can't get anywhere close to what it should look like. I also have the same issue in both Linux and Windows. Is this a known problem with the X1's graphic card? Are others having the same issue? As a sidenote: I have to say that this issue combined with the broken Windows updates and the wireless card that won't connect to ad-hoc networks or stream audio over bluetooth has left me extremely disappointed with this laptop. I've bought exclusively thinkpad laptops since the ibm days but will be switching brands for my next purchase.

Brand new Thinkpad X1 Carbon, with the 1920x1080 display. I have an external 2560x1440 monitor, but when I plug it in I can only get 1920x1080 resolution. The problem exists in both Windows and Linux. Before I waste any more time on this, can someone tell me if this hardware is even capable of driving a 2560x1440 display? Thanks in advance.

HP ZBook Dock with Thunderbolt 3 usb device issues. USB Keyboard randomly sends a stream of a repeated character.  I will be typing and mid worrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr d will get results like in the word above.  The inverse happens alot too, were it just drops a few characters i have typed. USB Mouse lag is horrible. Both devices will stop functioning, need to reboot the dock to recover them. Any one have any suggestions or which drivers are the most stable?

Answer:thunderbolt dock

Hey there, I'm simply trying to extend my desktop to an external monitor via the Surface Pro 3 dock mini DisplayPort. Here is what i've tried, and the result thus far:
mini DisplayPort-to-HDMI cable: works perfect when plugged directly into the surface pro 3. Does not show any image at all when plugged into the surface pro 3 docking station.
mini DisplayPort-to-HDMI active adapter to HDMI cable: works when plugged into the surface pro 3 mDP directly, and also works when plugged into the mDP on the back of the dock, but the external monitor goes black every couple of seconds.
Are there any specific specs that I need to purchase when buying an HDMI cable to make this work? Same for the active adapter to go from mDP to HDMI? My monitor is an Acer K272HUL, it has HDMI, DisplayPort, and DVI-D as my options for hookup. I'm willing to buy whatever, just so long as it works.

Answer:What is the correct way to hook up external monitor through surface pro 3 dock?

In theory your connections look good but maybe your mDP to HDMI cable is the issue? Do you have the ability to try a different one? I don't know of any setting related to the docking station which would make the DP output function differently so i'd guess it may be the cable.

Ever since I upgraded to Vista SP1 on my ThinkPad T61 (with an Intel integrated 965 series graphics card), I've been having problems when I try to use an external monitor via the DVI port in my Advanced Mini-dock.  I'm curious if other people have experienced this problem. The problems surfaces when I first boot up, or sometimes after my ThinkPad has been running for awhile (particularly when I do something graphics related, such as right-clicking to open display properties).  The picture starts to flicker (or disappear and reappear, like the screen does when changing graphics resolutions).  I also hear the "ba-bum" sound that you hear when disconnecting a piece of hardware, followed by the "bum-ba" reconnection sound - these two sounds happen repeatedly (sometimes as fast as once per second).  If I don't do anything, sometimes I'll get a bluescreen. Not long ago, I found a fix of sorts: to stop the flickering/reconnecting, I just open Task Manager and stop the process called "igfxpers" (an Intel driver problem).  The problem always disappears after I do this, although I have to remember to do it every time I reboot or else the problem comes back.  So it's not an ideal fix. This problem doesn't happen when I connect an external monitor using the analog VGA port, or when I'm just using the notebook LCD.  It's limited to just the DVI connection.  I've tried two different digital monitors (one LG, the other BenQ) as well as ... This is not the screen blanking issue - I have two 1920x1200 displays that I'd like to use on the dock.  Problem 1 - when I connect them both via digital (one DP and one DVI), the DP screen works fine & the DVI screen turns off.  No matter what I do, I could not get both screens running on DP + DVI. So, I switched to DP + VGA, which worked for a while - I was getting full resolution on both screens.  However, I undocked & re-docked recently, and this led to Problem 2: the VGA screen has reverted to "PnP Monitor" at 1024x768 resolution, and I can't find a way to get Windows to see it as the Dell monitor it is. I'm running Win7 Pro, fully patched.  Intel video card is on the latest BIOS, and the dock is on the latest BIOS.  The laptop itself is on the latest BIOS. Any suggestions to solve one or both of these issues? Thanks!

Hi,
I just received the TB16 dock, using with a Precision 5520 with Ubuntu and an P2415Q external monitor, and am happy with them, except for one regression.
In the past I've adjusted the brightness of the monitor with a command-line program that talks DDC over I2C and it works great changing brightness between morning, afternoon, and night modes.
I purchased the TB16 for the main purpose of providing a single cable connection to everything. But, when I connect the external monitor to the dock the DDC command signals are blocked (or not relayed). In short, I need a second cable to control the monitor.
This defeats the main purpose of the dock, and it is quite expensive for the other features, I certainly could spend less than $300 on a second power supply and usb hub. :-(
The question is then, is anyone aware of this problem, is it possible to be solved, and will it at some point in the future?
Thanks.

Hello, I recently bought the Ultra Dock 90 for my T450s.  I have one external monitor currently connected through the dock.  When I push the power button on the docking station (laptop lid closed) to turn on the computer, the computer turns on, but the external monitor does not engage.  When I lift the laptop lid, there is no image on the laptop screen either.  The laptop is on, but does not respond to any key stokes on the actual laptop.  I then have to do a hard reboot using the power button on the laptop. If I initially power the laptop by lifting the lid and hitting the laptop power button, the compter boots and my external screen works.  I can then close the laptop lid and everything is fine. I know the power button on the dock should power the computer and external monitor on.  I am guessing there is a simple solution to resolve this, but I am not a computer person and need help. One thing to note - when I lift the lid after trying to power the laptop through the dock, I see that the Function Green Light is illuminated.  Not sure if this information is helpful in determining the problem. Please help! Peterrabbit33

Hello,
I have an inspiron 5755 with an AMD A8-7410 APU with AMD Radeon R5 Graphics. I am trying to connect my laptop to my external Dell U2211H monitor.
I was a support technician for moer than 8 years, so here's what I've done so far, along with general issue information.
I was able to get the external monitor to work with the laptop for all of a day with a DVI to HDMI adapter. However it took some wiggling to get it to work and when it stopped working I purchased a Display Port to HDMI adapter in case the DVI port was the issue, which still isn't working.
I have tested both adapters, and they both work fine. and I have tested the external monitor, which works fine.
The monitor recognizes that it is plugged into something, but it says it is not receiving a signal from the laptop.
I know the monitor is good, both adapters are good and the HDMI cable is good.
I've updated every driver I could find for the laptops current configuration (only thing Ive changed is more memory and an SSD Hard Drive, but it was working with both those in) and specifically for the R5 and this specific external monitor. I've also updated the BIOS to the latest "A15" version.
Id really like this up and running again, so I'm open to ideas!

Its not something as simple as 'detect display' as no display is detected and the display settings show only one monitor.

Hi! I just got an X1 Carbon 2014 and I love it! However every time when I connect or reconnect it to an external monitor (I mostly use ?Second Screen only?) the screen seam to adjust to the new resolution but the icons, mouse etc. gets either too big or too small. The problem is solved by rebooting or signing out and in to the computer but it is annoying to do that every time I connect or reconnect to an external monitor (like 4 times a day) Does anyone know how this can be done easier? Stefan

Hi,

I am running Windows 10 on my Lenovo X1 Carbon and I am having an issue with scrolling on an external monitor.

The monitor connects and I can point and click on the screen using a USB mouse; however, when I use use the scroll wheel on the mouse nothing will scroll. If I use the track pad, I can scroll on the external monitor like normal.

I have tried two different monitors and several different USB mouse, and no change has been seen.
I do not know if this is a Windows 10 issue or if it is an issue with X1's in general.
Could anyone assist me if troubleshoothing this issue?

Thank you

Answer:No mouse scrolling on external monitor - X1 Carbon

I should have mentioned that I am using build 9841.

After a little more messing around, it seems as though it will sometimes scroll on the external monitor, but only when a page is loading on say chrome. I opened IE and it will scroll all the time. I tried MS Word and Excel and they will only scroll periodically.

Thanks

Hi,I have a Thinkpad P50 and today my Dell Thunderbolt Dock arrived.Unfortunately, it doesn't work  (= it is not recognized in any way), although Dell specifically says that the dock also works with non-Dell Thunderbolt 3 machines. I have installed the Thunderbolt software from the P50's driver site and updated to BIOS 1.17.Lenovo released an "Intel Alpine Ridge Thunderbolt Firmware" for the P70. But there's no such firmware update on the P50's site, just the Intel Thunderbolt Software from November. The 1.17 UEFI/BIOS Update says it fixed a Thunderbolt issue, but apparently not mine Has anyone ever gotten some Thunderbolt 3 device working on the P50? I just hope this will be fixed soon, because the Thunderbolt dock seems to be the only convenient way to drive three 4K displays with the P50 (2 via Thunderbolt 3, 1 via miniDP).

As the only docking solution available and moving from a more traditional dock, its less than suitable.  HP needs to make a longer cable and the end that connects to the laptop should be at a right angle.  The cable is so stiff and thick it takes nearly 4" to make the turn.  HP makes it impossible to find this out how long the cable is with out purchasing and at that point your stuck with it.  Hardly a customer satisfaction issue they should want to propigate!

Love the concept of the thunderbolt 3 dock, can't fathom how it was designed though.  On my zBook 15 G3, the power and thunderbolt ports are on the right side of the laptop.  The dock has the cable port on the left rear side, completely crossing over all the ports when you put the dock on a desk with the back facing away from  you.  Then they ship a cable that is barely long enough to put the dock directly behind the laptop and connect it.   Where do I buy a longer cable HP, please!

I recently purchased a Dell Thunderbolt dock for my Precision 3520. I hooked up my Logitech universal receiver to the Thunderbolt dock. The mouse and keyboard have significant lags (the keyboard repeats itself periodically). As soon as I move the receiver back to the laptop, the lags disappear. The problem is so bad that the mouse and keyboard are basically unusable when plugged into the Thunderbolt dock.

Has anyone else experienced this issue with either a Dell or other brand Thunderbolt dock? Have you been able to resolve it?

Answer:Dell Thunderbolt Dock

The Thunderbolt is for displays and such, not for the keyboard or mouse. Having the USB-C ports there are for faster speeds to SSD's, etc.. You do not need it if you are not going to use 4K/UHD displays, which is what the technology ws created for.

Sometime soon USB may go away if Apple keeps pushing the Beige Box manufacturers to go that route, which will never happen, because the Beige Box manufacturers thought that Firewire was a joke and now we do not see it used much anymore.

As for lags, check the drivers and try to keep the Keyboard and mouse attached to the physical computer, not a dock that is used for 4k tv's.

I just received my HP ZBook Studio and Thunderbolt Dock. I updated all drivers and BIOS. However, there is no internet connection through ethernet when I connect RJ45 to the dock. Am I missing something? Is it possible to have hardware related problem? Thanks,

Answer:Re: Ethernet on thunderbolt dock won't work

I am posting this through a Zbook G3 connected to a Thunderbolt dock with ethernet connected to the dock ethernet. Did you specifically install the package of dock drivers? Are you seeing crippled devices in device manager?

hello, we have a brand new spectre. first the device is amazing, i love it. but we have the following problem with the  HP Elite Thunderbold 3 65W Dock, if the Spectre is connected over Thunderbold Cable and on the Dock with Thunderbolt/Power combination cable connector, One 4.5mm power input every Device is working, Network is working, USB, both Display Ports are working, but the Spectre does not charge. i have installed the newest FIrmware Update  for the Thunderbold Dock Driver and i have updated BIOS, Intel Thunderbold Drivers on the Spectre. We have changed also the Thunderbolt 3 Dock with an new one, same problem.  one thing, on the front the light is off and i cannot turn on the spectre with the button.  any ideas, hints??? and yes i have connected the spectre over one of the 2 thunderbold ports, because the spectre has only 3 usb-c ports but 2 of them have thunderbold technology. i see also that the tb3 dock is recognized in windows at the thunderbold software.  kind regards, sebastian

Issue 1I purchased the ZBook Studio G3 + 2 months wait on the Thunderbolt 3 Dock to primarily connect 2 4K Samsung monitors.  When connected via the display port one will display at 4k while the other will only display @ 2560X1440.  I had bought a a couple of CableMatters thunderbolt 3 X display port adapters while waiting on the dock.  If I plug one of the monitors in using the adapter and the other into the display port both will display 4K.Anybody else having this issue? Issue 2After the computer goes to sleep only one monitor will wake up.  The NVDIA control panel still shows both connected.  Only way to get the second monitor awake is to shutdown and reboot. Issue 3I have the displays configured to go blank after 1 hour.  Once this occurs and I enter my password all of my open programs are displayed on one screen rather than on both.  This would be normal if you have undocked and re-docked a laptop. Issue 4If the laptop is opened while docked. One display goes blank and one is duplicated with the laptop screen.  This is not typical docked behavior.  I moved from an  Elitebook 8540W with dock.  I'm really questioning my whether this was an upgrade.

With the issues of USB port enumeration apparently resolved, I've started rolling out zBook 15 G3s to our users.  I've discovered in doing so that the dock does not appear to support Wake-on-LAN.  Is there an option to enable this functionality or perhaps is this functionality on the roadmap to be added in a future firmare release? Thanks, Stan

I've set up my Thunderbolt 3 dock. I notice in the status, it shows "94% available (plugged in, not charging)". It has been like this for the past two days. Does the battery have to reach a certain threshold, before charging? Or is this normal? My last dock, with the 8570W would always charge to 100%.

If I put my computer in "Sleep" mode and turn it back on, I can never get the dock to work again. I have tried to upgrade BIOS and drivers as described in several posts, but it doesn't work. The only working solution is to restart the computer. Has anyone got the same problem?

I have a HP Zbook Thunderbolt 3 Dock, 150W (part number p5q58aa#aba).  It is connected to an HP Zbook Studio G3 running an intel core i7-6700HQ CPU. I have two HP EliteDisplay E231i displays connected to the display port ports on the dock, and am also using the Zbook's own display.   Intermittently, the displays will go black for a few minutes then turn back on.  Also, intermittently the dock will seem to disconnect and I loose my displays as well as the ethernet on the dock.  When this occurs I must restart to restore dock functionality. I have the latest driver (ASMedia eXtensible Host Controller (xHCI) Driver 1.16.38.1 Rev.A) and firmware (ASMedia ASM1042A Firmware Update for HP Thunderbolt 3 Dock 131025.10.11.23 Rev.A). Any tips as to how I can get more consistent performance out of this dock?  It is kind ruining the experience of an otherwise fantastic notebook.

The thunderbolt dock was working.  I was gone for a week.  Came back and plugged laptop into dock.  No longer works.   The dock will charge the laptop, but none of the devices are recognized. Drivers are up to date.

I just installed the latest set of drivers. The dock still does not connect to my XPS 15- 9550.
This process has gone on for two months.

Answer:Thunderbolt TB15 Dock still not working

Return it. No amount of software/firmware updates is going to make this device good. It has several hardware issues.

Hey There We have bought 15 Studio G3s and docks to go with them We have ran into issues with about 40% of the docks. Not sure if its the docks or laptops causing the issues. One laptop tries 3 diffrent docks, USB and Ethernet wont work. Another laptop will randomly BSOD, if the dock is even touched it will BSOD as well. I've gone though all the posts about these issues from last summer but nothing really seems to help. Is there a newer fix that I am missing somewhere? Thanks Josh

I can't update my dock since it gives an error every time I try to update. I tried manual updates but BIOS files never show up, I think the problem lies with my service code not being in the system.
I tried entering the service tag and express service tag but it says it's not a valid product. If I provide the service tag and express service tag on this forum, would it be entered in the system so to speak? I also get critical updates and when I click update, an error occurs so my dock is not in sync with my XPS in terms of drivers. When I try to do manual updates, I'm only given 3 files and can't find bios files anywhere.

My configuration: T400 (2767-14U)Windows 7 64bit256MB ATI Radeon 3470HD (switchable graphics running in "High Performance")Advanced Dock (2503)Lenovo D221 Monitor (using VGA cable) I used the above configuration without issues for a year. My problem:  I just replaced my hard drive, clean installed the OS and all applications, and updated all drivers and the BIOS using System Update. Since doing that, my external monitor no longer comes on when I boot my computer  in the dock (lid closed). The only way I can get the external monitor to work is to boot my computer first, and then "hot dock" it. As far as I know, all of my BIOS/Power/Graphics settings are the same as always. Thanks in advance for any help!

This week the display on my carbon x1 touch suddenly died.  It was working in the morning and in the evening it was dead.  An external monitor works and the touch function of the screen still works.  When looking at the display at an angle and with a flashlight I do not see an image so I don't think it is the backlight that is dead. Is there any idea what could be the problem? Unfortunately, it is two months out of warranty.

Answer:Carbon X1 display dead but touch and external monitor work

Hi Ke_murphy,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per the query we understood that you are facing the issue with Display on your ThinkPad X1 Carbon.

This could be issue with Display cable; you can check it with re-seating the display cable for that.

Please click here to view the Hardware Maintenances Manual for re-seating the display cable.

Hope this helps!

Best regards,
Hemanth Kumar

After a long series op updates and firware upgrades we still encounter much trouble with the HP Thunderbolt Dock's Recently (7-2-2017) we installed a new HP ZBook G3. We always reinstall our ZBook G3's with a 'clean installation' of Windows 10 and the required HP Drivers. After adding de required software on this laptop our nightmare begins... Unable to attach usb keyboard or mouse on the Thunderbolt Dock and after rebooting a few times even windows crashes.Once you detach the dock, the coputer will eventually start again and will work as it should.Any attempt to unload update drivers and reinstall have no effect. After contacting HP support we received a link Troubleshoot Thunderbolt 3 Dock.In this document they descrbe a specific order in which to install you drivers. Since we already tried this in all our previous problems with the dock, i was getting somewhat despirate...Untill yesterday where i stumbled upon a message on the HP forum including the use of Citrix Client Software which happens to be so in our case. After a clean installtion of Windows 10 and installing the drivers in the required order like described in the Thoubleshooting documentation the Zbook and thunderbolt dock both work fine. Then i installed the citrix receiver 4.6 software and al my troubles were back after a reboot. I removed the Citrix Client and now everything works perfectly. The next challence is to get Citrix working again........... I have an HP Zbook Thunderbolt 3 dock on my HPZbook G3.  I recently updated the BIOS and firmware to the latest version to fix other "dock" issues.  Am now at the latest for both.  The dual monitors and ethernet over the Thunderbolt 3 work, but none of the USB ports are active. I'm certain the USB ports work, becuase they used to work prior to the BIOS and firmware update.  Neither keyboard, mouse, or USB memory work in the dock. I've tried going to HP support and installing any of the updates with USB in it, but it hasn't worked.  I have a workaround--just plugging in to the notebook directly, but would like to get my dock fully functional. The Device manager doesn't show any devices with issues.  I'll try to update, but I don't know which one to look at.

I seem to be having a problem with my Yoga 720 15" and the Lenovo Thunderbolt 3 Dock.    Every once in a while the screens blank out and then return.   Sometimes I get a Topology Has Changed message when this happens and all my windows scramble.   Sometimes they all go to the laptop and sometimes they dispurse amongst my two monitors. Anyone else experience problems with this configuration? All of my drivers are updated except BIOS because apparently it does not like the fact that I installed my own version of Windows 10 instead of leaving the one that came with it.....but that is another issue. I could not find anything regarding updating the Thunderbolt 3 Dock firmware.    Here is what I have on my Thunderbolt driver:

Hi All Could really do with some help on this. We are gonig to be using the HP Elite Thunderbolt 3 Docking Station with our laptops. The issue I am finding at present is that you have to authorise for use on each laptop. This requires Admin Rights, something that we are no going to give our End Users. According to the manual located at: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c05141189, on page 5, "Note: You must be logged on as an administrator on the computer connected to the dock. To enable a non-administrator user to select OK, enter the non-administrator registry key. Contact your HP Technical Consultant for this key." Does anybody have any idea what the key is? Kind Regards

HiI just would like a description and confirmation on what the following options do under the Thunderbolt 3 dock in the Bios for this series laptop I tested the option "No security" and this seems to bypass the authentication pop up when logged into Windows when plugging in the Thunderbolt 3 dock. So essentially it enables network ethernet connection to work straight away Can someone tell me what the other options do?

So I have got the 65W Thunderbolt 3 dock. And it works great. The one issue I have is when I plug in devices in the USB ports which requires a bit of power, like charing the wireless mouse, or connect a phone etc. The dock makes a very annoying high pitched noise. Not loud but due to the frequency its certainly audible.  The frequuency varies as well, so its not stable, making it even more noticable. The noise varies a bit depending on the ports used. Slightly less noise with the phone using the USB behind with the lightning/charging symbol next to it. Is it a known / common fault? or should I maybe send it back and another unit? (will take me at least two weeks ) Kenneth
