Video Files Not Showing Thumbnails in File Explorer

Question: Video Files Not Showing Thumbnails in File Explorer

I've ran Disk Cleaner to delete the thumbnails.

I've deleted the thumbnail caches via command prompt (Admin).

I've gone through View/Options/View and made sure "Always show icons, never thumbnails" was not checked.

And still, I cannot get thumbnails for my .mp4 files. All I get is that movie clicker symbol blue icon.

Anything I haven't tried yet?

TIA

Hi,
I know there are some threads about this. but I couldn't solve my problem using those. so I decided to make a new thread instead of bumping the old ones.
Well, Here is my problem:
recently I installed a fresh copy of windows 8 on my PC. it was nothing wrong with it till I installed Kaspersky Endpoint Security 10 (v. 10.1.0.867) & did a reboot.
Now non of my files including picture, audio & video files show thumbnails or even tags (ex mp3 files).
I've tried the solutions stated about turning thumbnails on & off with no luck. in my folder options the option "Always show icons, never thumbnails" is UNCHECKED.

Has anybody faced the problem?? Is the issue from Kaspersky?? Are there any workarounds??

I truly Appreciate any help.

PS. I also have some difficulties pinning folders to windows explorer taskbar icon since then.

I have just built a new computer, using Windows 7 Pro 64 bit, however, I've noticed when I open Windows explorer, 3 out of 4 times it will continuously search for drives when opening up explorer and not show any drives that are installed. I've tried reformatting, using different hard drives, but the problem persists no matter what I do. I've reinstalled Windows 7 with only a single drive plugged in, tried different SATA ports, but this problem keeps coming back. The only thing I can think of is that the Windows 7 install disk is corrupted and not installing properly.

I've also noticed that once it starts searching like this, the icons wont display in any folder, although the file names will. Likewise, when trying to sort files by date, type, etc, they will not sort.

When this happens, I can easily type in C:\ to get to the drive without problem to access the drive but above problems with icons not showing, sorting, etc still is a problem.

Has anyone had this problem? Know of a way to fix this? I'm not looking forward to having to reformat again as I don't have the time to sit through and reinstall everything again after.

After upgrading to Windows 10 Pro, all my image thumbnails in Explorer show perfectly fine with the exception of PNG type.
It's strange, if I open a PNG with the Phgoto app then refresh the explorer window, the thumbnail will appear for the image I open, but none other. So If I open them one at a time and refresh Explorer, the thumbs will show.
I have tried all the common 'fixes' I've seen here and from results of google searches - but none have solved my particular unusual problem.
There's one other problem which I feel might be related.
Windows App icons don't show on the task bar or the Default programs dialog. The DO show in the start menu.
What happens, is they show as a blank square on the taskbar and as a white document in default program dialog.
Anyone come across this weirdness?
Yes I have the latest Radeon Drivers.

I use Windows 10, but ever since upgrade from XP to windows 7, PSD thumbnails are not showing in windows explorer, as jpg and gif does.
Tried this solution but nothing changed:
How to enable Thumbnail view for Photoshop PSD files in Windows 7
any solution?

Answer:.PSD thumbnails not showing in explorer?

Thumbnails for formats that Windows does not natively support are supplied by a handler, either this handler is not installed on your system or its associations have been damaged. I believe the handler also needs to be 64-bit if your system is 64-bit, as with other explorer shell extensions.

If you're using Photoshop, check you have the 64-bit version installed if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows. If you have upgraded Windows, the associations may have been damaged and so you may need to re-install Photoshop. Another solution is to install an alternative thumbnail hander, Media Preview may possibly support PSD files now I remember it being mentioned as an upcoming feature a while ago.

As the title says. It happened all of a sudden.

I've tried going into folder options and unticking and ticking.
I've ran disk clean up
I've ran sfc /scannow
I've installed some codecs

I did find something about editing the registry but when I was following the instructions I couldn't find the specified area mentioned in the article. So I haven't actually change anything in my registry yet.

Thanks,

When I open Windows Explorer I and go to my Picture File, the Thumbnails don't always show correctly. I can open Windows Explore and see no Thumbnails displayed but if I open another copy, it's better but not all come up. I have multiple folders, some display no thumbnails (a blank white sheet), others show a few and others show more. I also get a green bar at the top that never finishes. Sometimes, I open Explorer, and if I try to expand the Folder Tree on the left panel it won't expand, The Files are on an External Flash Drive. I've tried many troubleshooting searches for the problem so yes, I have the Folder Option, "View" set to "Display thumbnails." This is a recent problem. One last thing, the computer seems as it's freezing and not updating the thumbnails, but currently the CPU usage is only 4% under Task Manager.

Did you make any changes to your Windows Operating System recently? Sounds like the aftermath of a "tune up" that went wrong.

That being said, the data that has no thumbnails.... can you open them and view the data, I'm curious to know if it's corrupted.

I have checked in the only two places I was aware of that would cause this:

Folder Options - View ....however, there is no option there to check show Thumbnails. I believe this option should be there at the top, but it isnt.

I also went to Properties of My Computer, Advanced, Performance. It is checked there to show Thumbnails.

But for whatever reason, I only see icons when I should see thumbnails. And yes, I have changed the view to Medium, large, extra large.

Answer:Explorer showing Icons instead of thumbnails....

Hallo guys!

First of all i must say that my english it's not my native language, so sory for any mistakes.

Now to my problem, i have a Toshiba Qosmio Q55-Q802 with vista premium 64b and from the first day i cannot see Thumbnails in explorer. The problem is only with the movies or series that they are in AVI format, when for example a movie is in WMV format or MPG format then i have thumbnails(the capture picture from the film), and also i have thumbnails for my photos or pictures. So the problem is only with files that they are in AVI format. I thing that the problem is the 64b O.S because with my old laptop i had vista ultimate and i had thumbnails without any problems

Until now i clean the cache but nothing, one frind of my he tried something with my registry but still nothing and i also i went to folder options - view - and i have unchecked Alway shows icon , never thumbnails but still nothing.I dont remember something else that i did for the moment.

As i said i have this problem from the firs day that i got my laptop and i have my new laptop for 5-6 month so any help it will be highly appreciated.

Hi guys

Again this is a pain...I changed to Vista Ultimate 64bits a week ago, and again the damn thumbnail problem on windows explorer...

I managed to solve this on 32bits Vista and i have a post here but the same solutions doesnt' work on 64bits

What i did to solve on 32bits Vista is

1) install fresh vista
2) open the avi file with crystal player
3) crystal player told me "do you want to load the codec for this files?"
4) so that was all, he downloaded some avi basic pack and everything worked fine

Same thing i tried on vista 64 but no luck

1) i tried that solution
2) i tried the registry fixes
3) i installed klite codeck pack
4) i installed combined comunity codeck pack
5) i installed vista codec package

Well no luck...Also if i open ANY avi file i whatever player i choose i can see it perfect, but no thumbnails...BUT the only player that does not work is Windows Media Center says..."no codec to display the movie" and "cannot show thumbnail"

Well hope someone can figured out this and can help me

Cheers to all
Sergio

At first, my Windows Explorer kept closing itself. I browsed around the web for a solution, and I found one at this thread:

As suggested by the last poster, marcher, I typed in regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll and regsvr32 /u shimgvw.dll.

Definatly NO, as IE8 is still beta, while the final version is likely to be good, this current version is still buggy and its never wise to use a beta to try and fix a problem as you may end up with many more issues that you barganed for. Try IE7 with YouTube and see if the thumbnails show.

Ok... i have some computer knowledge, and i can google with the best of them but I haven't found a complete fix to my problem... here we go... got video from this last waterfowl season... on my old Toshiba satellite which was running windows 7 home ed, i was able to take that video (.MOD) format and put it straight onto my computer into a folder, and i would have a thumbnail of maybe the beginning of that video... That computer's Hard drive crashed... so i bought a smaller Toshiba like T135 or something without a disc drive, which also has windows 7 home, and I am able to get the thumbnails on that coomputer also... however i bought this Dell Optiplex GX280 which has Windows XP on it... I bought it because it would be a better video editing computer than some small laptop... This computer has good stats, but alas i went to put my video on and i opened my flash drive and I have 0 photoed thumbnails... now when i first started this, i had the factory Windows Media Player... no thumbnails with it... then upgraded to media player 11, still no thumbnails... all it has is the WMP icon and MPEG... if i need i can take a screen photo and show you... so i've spent the last couple hours googling and found what seemed to be a solution by downloading this codec which a few people said fixed their problem... Stinkys' MPEG-2 Codec Installer... I download and ran this... now it wasn't a complete failure because one of the sub-folders inside the main folder finally c... Read more

Answer:File Explorer isn't showing recent files

Hi, there may be other consequences if your disk has been affected, or you may be very lucky and a small part of your registry has been corrupted.

A possible solution to your immediate problem is here:
File Explorer Recent Files and Frequent Folders groups are missing - Microsoft Community
- basically, create another user, and copy the relevant part of the registry back to your original user's registry.

I would also recommend you run
chkdsk C: /F
from an elevated command prompt
and also
SFC /scannow

just to check all is (probably) well.

===================================
Here's a very useful method which will help you avoid a great deal of difficulty- strongly recommended and used by most here:

Start using disk imaging. Regularly. Before any major change, and after a big change or a series of smaller changes. System Restore isn't enough.. it can help sometimes, but only if you turn it on (it's off by default.. absurd).

With disk images you
a. Can restore your disk/partition in a defined time (e.g 20 to 40 mins).
b. Have a full backup - can extract files.
c. Can use them to rebuild your system on a new HDD (e.g.)
d. Have peace of mind (most important!)

Get a copy of Macrium Reflect or Aomei Backupper (both have free options). The first is more geeky and a cut down version of a commercial product - no incremental backup. The 2nd is more straightforward, offering both differential and incremental backups. (You can read about those yourself if unsure).

Everything seems to be running fine but I've noticed that in file explorer I keep having random files mysteriously appearing in This PC (current example: in the Documents folder I now have a subfolder named "Adates191" and another named "Bstorage59"). They both contain a bunch of Word, Excel, txt and other weird files that cannot be opened. I also have a file named "astores60" and "xsettingssettings11" in my Windows (C list, again contain crappy files like my previous example. Finally, in my Data (D drive I have two new files "Cversion36" and "Whelper148" with the same gibberish as above. If I delete all of them some different ones mysteryiously replace them. Hallo guys

Some of the thumbnails aren't showing up windows explorer even though they are the same file type. There will be 12 episodes of a show in .AVI or .MKV, and only 9 will have thumbnails, the other 3 don't. I have the Haali Media Splitter on to show thumbnails and I installed the Windows Service Pack to to it too (not sure which one is actually working, if I had to guess I'd say it's Haali).

To enable the thumbnails on Haali Media Splitter I click it, the went: options → explorer integration → show thumbnails (yes) → thumbnails offset (10000)

Not sure what is wrong...can anyone help?

And this is a problem with pretty much all the file types, some thumbnails showing and some not when they're in the same folder and I got them from the same source (all the files in a folder are either AVI or MKV, but the problem happens with both)

Hello, I don't know if I should post this problem on Firefox forum (because I use FF as my main browser) or adobe forum but I'd like to post it here first to get some suggestions.

Basically starting from few days ago, thumbnails won't show for some videos on Japanese video steaming site called Nico Nico Douga. Here are some of the examples on Firefox (highlighted in red rectangles):
http://i.imgur.com/DH7lbOp.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/CTwKEXT.jpg
Also, it won't show on IE as well as you can see from the screenshots below:
http://i.imgur.com/SuFDpmj.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/990wrGj.jpg

However, the problem is not permanent as when I refresh the page it shows the thumbnails. Though when I refresh the page again other videos will not show the thumbnails and so on. So, it's very random and it only happens to few random videos as there are no specific pattern for certain videos.

I know it might be hard to pinpoint the cause of this problem as it's not a well known site like youtube however I suspect the way it works (i.e video thumbnails, using same flash player etc) is similar to each other.

Answer:Video thumbnails not showing (NicoNicoDouga: Japanese site)

It displays fine on my FF, so if it is indeed a FF problem, it may come down to one of your addons. Try running FF ins it's safe mode and see if it displays correctly.

First, It's my honor to be with you in this forum. This is my first thread !

I'm really tired and angry with a very annoying error of windows explorer.
windows explorer is getting crashed while opening any folders accidentally, especially folders with large number of files and images. first it appears as windows explorer is unable to load files thumbnails (any kind of files) and appears as white or blank icons regardless the type of file. then when opening my computer in another window , it couldn't load even contents of drivers and hangs as "searching for items".
all this happens suddenly after weeks of normal windows usage. I resolve it by backing up system using Acronis image. but the problem persists. I tried virus scan with no success using AVG. I made thorough scan for C with no result too.
Note that this problem I found with Windows 7 and it forced me to upgrade to Windows 8 then I'm experiencing the same problem now. I don't Understand why.

Note: I think there's no hardware (HDD) error cause I'm running Ubuntu 13.04 alongside Windows and it's browsing files perfectly.

Please help quickly
Thanks

Answer:Windows Explorer stops showing files or no file thumbnail

Try doing a CHKDSK on the drive that has Windows on it, also when was the last time you optimised the drive? Scan it and see if it finds any problems. It's best to do it from an install disk and go into Command Prompt and run CHKDSK from there, that way you can see the results as it works on the drive.

I have read similar problems on this forum, but, unfortunately, did not solve mine.

After installing a software (I'm not sure which, it could be VLC or ffdshow codecs or videopad), video thumbnails in Windows Explorer would not show a frame from the video, just the icons. I then downloaded a .reg file which restored the video thumbnails, but now it only shows the first frame of the video, which is usually blank. So now all my videos show a blank black picture, which was not so earlier. Before the problem started, it would pick up a random frame from the video...

Could anyone help out, please?

Hello,

I noticed yesterday that after using File Explorer for a short while, it stops showing any thumbnails, and only shows a plain white icon, not even the default icon for a file type. I tried all the usual methods for showing thumbnails, but to no avail.

Then, after a short while, it just stops working altogether. If I try to change folder, I get the message "Working on it..." and a green (lack of) progress bar in the address bar, but nothing happens. It just sits there and refuses to show me the contents of any folder, even "This PC".

The only way I have found to solve this is to restart the machine. As you can imagine, this isn't very practical!

Anyone any ideas? It's making it really hard to do any work. Thanks.

Answer:Thumbnails disappear in File Explorer, then Explorer freezes

Hi,
1. Do you have any system restore points or disk images you can use to restore your PC to how it was on a date prior to this problem developing?
(We strongly and repeatedly recommend people use disk imaging.. it means you can often recover your PC to a working state without assistance, quickly and efficiently without stress).

2. As an interim measure, try using a different file manager.

Ok I know many people have this problem and disabling thumbnails does fix it. However I don't want to disable thumbnails. At least not for images.

I have searched for this problem for a long time and noone has a solution. The problem may be either adobe programs making thumbnails (unlikely for me) or more likely, video codec problems.

So how do I stop Windows crashing whenever I open a folder with certain video files in it?

If this cannot be fixed, is there anyway I can enable thumbnail previews for images but not videos?

Previously vista explorer used to show a thumbnail of a still image from my video files (avi; divx; etc).

I installed Nero and I think the install went a bit wrong. As I kept getting DCOM errors whenever I viewed a folder in thumbnail view that contained videos. Reinstalling nero solved this problem. However it resulted in explorer now only showing the generic AVI thumbnails.

I have resinstalled FFshow and this has not helped. Has anyone else come across this problem, or something similar whereby thumbnail view shows default generic items instead of the actual image? And more importantly, has anyone else resolved it.

Thanks.

Answer:Missing Video (avi; divx; etc) thumbnails in explorer

Just as I thought. Turns out it was something to do with the registry and explorer losing associations.

Thankfully, someone had already solved the problem with a registry file. I can confirm that I have downloaded this file and tested and it has solved my problem.

Provided is the link to his page
http://www.hanselman.com/blog/FIXMissingThumbnailsForVideosWMVAVIMPGInWindowsExplorer.aspx

Further to this page is another link that provides various registry files that fix various other file association problems.

http://www.winhelponline.com/articles/105/1/

This was easy to solve in XP but changing default actions and program/file associations in Vista is completely broken in my opinion.

The thumbnails have disappeared on my video files with just the icons remaining, how can I get the thumbnails back?.

Answer:My thumbnails have gone video files.

Open a folder with photos in it. At the top select view. To the right click Options then 'Change folder and search options' in the dropdown menu or just click the icon. In the folder options popup select view and tick the box for 'display the file icon on thumbnails' and untick the box for 'always show icons , never thumbnails'. Click apply.

Attached is a screen shot of a folder that has 3 AVI files in it. It's really not a bog deal, but why are 2 of 'em shown as thumbnails, and one is shown with the VLC Media Player icon. They all have the same extension (.avi) and when I pause the mouse pointer on 'em, they all say "VLC Media File (.avi)". The 'View' setting is set to 'Thumbnails'. So why are they displayed differently when I open a folder? Like I said, it's not really important, and I'm just curious more than anything else....

(the red boxes are where I censored some information I didn't think was needed to get my point across; the black boxes are the thumbnails displayed by Windows)

Answer:Video files - thumbnails or ????

Oh... I forgot to mention that I do have VLC installed, and I use it, so the mystery isn't why I see the VLC icon or why it says VLC in the file descriptions, but why it shows two files as thumbnails, and one with the icon. Why aren't they all thumbnails? or all icons?

Hi
Ages ago my computer lost the ability to show thumbnail images on the folder for video files. Some existing ones remain but anything new just shows the quicktime logo or similar. I hadn't bothered about this but it is now really annoying me as a preview is good to see when there are several files to choose from. I have done a bit of reading about K-lite and codec tweaks etc but find all this a bit daunting. So -

Can anybody assist and point me in the right direction with some SIMPLE and easy to apply remedy for this issue. I am still using XP.
Thank you

Hello, a while back my video files stop displaying video previews as the thumbnails. Thumbnails are now the generic blue wmv/avi icon. The files play still, just the thumbnail issue. Please help. I have a HP laptop with Vista OS.

btw, i have tried disk defrag, cleaned disk space including "delete thumbnails" option, made sure "show thumbnails instead of icons" was checked in performance settings, all to no avail.

I am able to edit Properties of a .jpeg file while in File Explorer. I right click on a .jpeg file and am able to type information into some of the fields in the Details tab.
When I try to do the same thing to a .mts video file, I can't get a cursor in any of the fields that would be editable if it was a .jpeg file.
I use my computer a lot. But I'm not a coder. I know nothing about command line or editing the registry.
I Googled a lot looking for an answer.
I apologize if this is the wrong place to ask this question. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!...Loki the Dog

I have window 10 home.

I'm in the directory on my hard disk c:\
I can see maybe 2-3 thumbnails preview the rest are icons and i have like 400 items most of them thumbnails/images of some types: png jpg bmp.

My hard disk c: have 93.6 GB free out of 139 GB
And i tried already in the menu: View > Options > Change folder and search options > View and then unchecked Always show icons, never thumbnails. But it didn't help much.

I did new windows 10 clean install today and not yet installed new updates since there was no space on C: so i startec lean up some stuff and so far i have 93.6 GB free space. Maybe the problem is that i need first to install all the updates ?

I tried now to go drive D and same problem most of the images without preview.

Hi,

Video files in File explorer are shown with the icon of their default program, not with thumbnails; picture files, however, are shown with thumbnails. This is so for several file formats and default programs for both; all cases that I could try. I run Wndows 8.1 64 bit.

The preferences are set for thumbnails in both locations:
File explorer: View/Options/Change folder and search options/View/Always show icons, never folders - unchecked
Control Panel/System/View advanced system settings/Advanced/Performance, Visual effects..../Show thumbnails instead of icons - checked
Of course, otherwise thumbnails wouldn't show for picture files either.

sfc/scannow - did not find any integrity violation

Dism.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /Restorehealth - failed, error: 0x80240021

How to fix it?
Thanks.

Things I've tried:

1. I have Haali Media Splitter installed (from CoreAVC) options>>explorer integration (yes)>>Thumbnails offset (10000)
2. WMP Playback Pack
3. DivX Preview

None of those worked. I'm running Windows 7 Professional. The KMPlayer is the default to play my MKV files (works great), but I can change that to Windows Media Player if needed to show the details and thumbnails. Any suggestions?

And I can't install DivX Plus Codec Pack like other people have recommend because my laptop isn't connected to the internet (no wireless). To install the other things I've just put the installer on a USB and then installed them from the USB onto my laptop.

Hi there. At the beginning I have to say I know option "always show icons, never thumbnails" in folder options but it's not what I want to use because it doesn't solve my problem.

When I was using Windows 7 there was a tool which helps to disable preview of video files. Is it possible to do same in Windows 8? It's very annoying when icons view is set to average and preview is on. I'd like to disable preview of video files permanently. Is it possbile? In every size of icon I want default icon for this extension. In Windows 7 there was no problem to handle with this.

Hi, I have a Windows Vista and I'd like all file types from all Media players to display a thumbnail of the video in Windows Explorer as opposed to just showing an icon of the file type. The problem is that in Vista, it only shows thumbnails of Windows Media Player videos and not videos that use VLC Media Player (except .VOB which it does show) or Quicktime. I've done some research online and I've seen that I need to merge a Registry file into the Registry Editor with certain Registry keys in it, so I tried doing it for .MP4 files:
----------------------------------------------------------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mp4\shellex]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mp4\shellex\{3D1975AF-0FC3-463d-8965-4DC6B5A840F4}]
@=""
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mp4\shellex\{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}]
@="{c5a40261-cd64-4ccf-84cb-c394da41d590}"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mp4\shellex\{E357FCCD-A995-4576-B01F-234630154E96}]
@="{9DBD2C50-62AD-11D0-B806-00C04FD706EC}"
----------------------------------------------------------
After I entered the above into the Registry I restarted my PC, and nothing happened, the .MP4 videos still show no thumbnails.

Any suggestions or help is welcome and thanked in advance!

Hello All,

After uninstalling software which allows the user to view 3D files (as well as most image/movie files), I could not get thumbnails to show in Windows Explorer for PNG and MP4 file types. I figured that since I was going to upgrade to Windows 10, I would allow said upgrade to "fix" the issue for me.

After upgrading to Windows 10, I could see thumbnails of MP4 files, but not PNG.

Things I have done to get back the PNG thumbnail generation:

Rebuilt Icon CacheCleared Thumbnail cacheSFC /scannowScheduling a check disk to run on boot (both options for fixing stuff were checked)Enabled Thumbnail Previews in Folder OptionsEnabled Thumbnail Previews in Visual EffectsTried every option from here: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/5...dows-10-a.htmlReinstalled Windows 10 upgrade.

Nothing has helped. Still icons, no thumbnails for PNG files.

Anyone have any insight as to how I might get back PNG thumbnails in Windows Explorer?

Thank you,
edsager

I'm running Windows 7 x64, and I can't see any video file thumbnails (ex: .avi, .flv, etc) of the files in my My Videos folder. All video clips work in VLC and WMC.

Addendum: I've tried to solve this problem by downloading the K-Lite Codec for x32 and x64 (as suggested to a user in a different thread), but as seen below, this solution only worked for the .mkv and .wmv files.

Can anyone offer up another solution?

When I click open a folder, with "Large" or "Extra Large" icons selected as the viewing mode, thumbnails are generated for any JPEG files, but not for the RAF (Fuji RAW) files. For those, there is only the icon for the default program I have set. But, I have two IDENTICAL PCs, both with everything the same. I update Windows7 on both at the same time, and install the same software, etc. The strange thing is that ONE of my computers DOES display thumbnails for BOTH jpeg and RAF files! But the other system only displays thumbnails for the jpegs. I have no idea why the difference. I've checked settings for all the folder and viewing options I can think of, in control panel as well, but no solution. Any ideas are welcome.

Hello there. I really enjoy Windows 7, but recently I ran into a problem that keeps making me swear like a sailor and elicit tremendous amounts of HATE when I try to solve it (and can't).

The thing is, all of a sudden more than half of the folder thumbnails in my Music library disappeared. But that's not the case... explorer.exe started to hang up (as in, raises the CPU usage to 100% and stops operating until killed and relaunched) whenever I tried to open any folder without a thumbnail. So I deleted the thumbnail cache and the missing thumbnails still wouldn't generate. F5 had no use. I thought my HDD failed and the folders were damaged, but then I went into the Music folder instead of library (while in "Table" view) and everything worked normally. However, if I ought to choose any view that has thumbnails, Explorer hung up when I would try to do anything with a folder that has no thumbnail. Heck, it even hung up when I changed the view or just selected a folder.

So it all came down to:
If thumbnails are off ("always show icons" thing), everything seems to work fine.

This is clearly not a hard drive issue, as I managed to copy the folders to another disk (via command prompt, because Explorer hung up everytime I tried) and it was still the same.
Neither this is a library issue - with thumbnails turned off, the library works.
The music files themselves are OK too.

Hi, I have no idea what might have caused it but all the thumbnails for all my video files are now replaced with the players' icons. My PC is Windows 8 Pro x64 by the way and I have tried the following already:
Clearing & rebuilding icons' cache with windows disk cleanup tool and CCleaner;
Updating & reinstalling players;
Double-checking Windows performance/visual setting 5 times;
Installing different codec packs that gave me random, irrelevant, unfamiliar, non-comprehensive thumbnails that failed to show up in folders view (thus it did not fix anything to the way things used to be);
Checking the folder options back-and-forth;
Merging a pre-written .reg code file to set the thumbnails to show;
Scanning for viruses/spyware/registry errors, etc;
...that's probably all I can list from the top of my head right now but please - I'd like to hear your ideas or suggestions to can get to the bottom of this unfortunate and indeed mysterious case - you have my ears, folks. Thank you all in advance...

Whenever I view a folder which contains .MP4 (H264) video files in large icon view (shows thumbnails), Windows 7's Explorer crashes. Explorer loads for a few seconds, the green progress bar shows up, and then boom!, Explorer crashes. The thumbnails are not shown before crashing. Does anyone know how to fix this?

I tried setting Folder options to 'Always show icons, never thumbnails' (disables thumbnails) on the same folder with MP4 (H264) video files and Explorer doesn't crash if the MP4 thumbnails aren't shown. I tried testing in other folders containing other video formats (with 'Always show icons, never thumbnails' set to off) like .AVI/Xvid, without an MP4/H264 file, and Windows Explorer shows the thumbnails fine without crashing.

I have not currently experienced problems with other formats, only MP4/H264. The only media players that I have installed are KMPlayer and VLC Media Player which both do not install external codecs, AFAIK. The only external codec I have installed is CoreAVC, but I have been using CoreAVC for months (KMPlayer+CoreAVC is one of the first things I installed in Windows 7) without any problems (this issue just arose a few days ago).

I am using Windows 7 Ultimate, 32 bit.

Note: I prefer a solution that will not end up disabling video thumbnails for MP4 files. I still would like to see MP4 video thumbnails, if possible. If the video files themselves are problematic, I reckon Explorer should not crash and just not show the thumbnails.

This was a probably I noticed out of the box as soon as I installed Vista Business on my new work machine. I have a hard drive from my DVR with media files that I watch with Media Player Classic or VLC. I've found that when I delete a file from the drive and refresh the directory listing, it will immediately return. But, the file is actually gone, as it cannot be opened.

When checking through Process Explorer, I found that explorer.exe has hundreds of my media files open, even ones that I've never opened. It seems that when Vista performs thumbnail creations on video files, it is locking the file and not releasing the handle. Screenshot of procexp below:

The problem now is that to really delete a file, I have to delete it from the directory and then use Process Explorer to close the handle that explorer.exe has on the file. As soon as I do that, the file disappears from the directory listing like it should.

I thought this was just a problem on one drive, but now it's occurring across all of my hard drives.

FYI, videos are recorded through SageTV as:
Audio: MPEG Audio 48000Hz stereo 384Kbps [Mpeg-1]
Video: MPEG2 Video 720x480 (4:3) 29.97fps 4000Kbps [Video]
I've tried searching, but I haven't found any other instances of this. Has anyone seen similar occurrences? The only way to fix it is to either close the handles (which is in the thousands, and they have to be done one at a time), reboot, or kill and restart explorer.exe.

Recently I downloaded a file converter which, after installation, associated all my video files with itself. Previous to downloading this programme my .avi, .mkv files etc were all displayed simply as an icon, yet now they are all displayed as a thumbnail picture. The only solution I have found for reverting my video files back to being displayed simply as an icon is via Folder Options, 'Always show icons, never thumbnails'. However, selecting this option also disables the thumbnail preview for my .jpeg and other image files. Is there any way to disable my video files being displayed with a thumbnail whilst keeping the thumbnail preview for images? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

"Could not save because the file is locked. Use the Properties command in the Windows Explorer to unlock the file"

That would be great if I could see the damn file to get its properties!!! Plus, something else is going on here because I dont lock any of my files.

Hi All,

My wife has an Acer laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium.  Yours truly was trying unsuccessfully to set up a bunch of Excel spreadsheets that link to other spreadsheets on a SkyDrive account I had set up.  Realized while doing this that linking to the remote drive was giving Excel fits.  The machine started to become unstable due(I think) to all the unsuccessful attempts to link across my home network and internet.  I abandoned the effort.  I believe the machine was rebooted and the next day my wife was working on the machine again and things started going wonky.  Seemed like there may have been some residual effects of my networking efforts and things started to go downhill and run very slow.  Files could not find each other; something was hogging up 95% of memory but not visible in Task Manager; programs would not start; blue screen of death; all the usual fun stuff. Things seem to have stabilized for better or worse and I am using the machine now.  The lingering effect of this all is missing files from Explorer that I have verified are there.  For example, I created a file using Publisher.  Close the file and try to find it using Explorer and it cant be found.  Re-open Publisher - go to recent files - click the file -  and bingo it opens.  Save, close, try to find it in Explorer again and it is not there.  Not sure what... Has the system done any Freezes or Bluescreens? If so, you may wanna scan your hard drive for problems, Don't use SCANDISK- Download Hiren's Boot CD from my link below, burn it and boot to it.

Is your hard drive mechanical or is it SSD? Assuming it is mechanical, in the Hiren's Boot Screen, choose Dos Programs, and Hard Drive Tools. You can use either GWscan or the Manufacturer's Drive Scanning tool, run a quick check and see if it detects "Read Element Failure" - If it does, then let the program fix it, should take about an hour to run through the whole drive.

After that, boot up again, and run a CHKDSK from within Windows and let that run fully if it needs to, then see if it is still doing what you described. If it does, we'll look for other causes.

I'm having a bizarre problem on my Windows 10 PC.

For some reason, lots of image thumbnails won't load (particularly PNG files and AVI files), which is extremely frustrating. Sometimes it shows the file type icon, sometimes a generic file icon, and something literally nothing at all.

In addition, if I right click on an image file, and choose "Open with...", explorer freezes and I have to restart it in Task Manager.

Also, Control Panel\Programs\Default Programs\Set Associations perpetually loads for me and I can't set it.

I reset my PC about a week ago, I've tried this solution, I've done check disk and repair disk, and I can't seem to find a solution.

I use thumbnails while I work constantly, so this is a huge detriment to my productivity.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

have 10% left on local drive, but when manually checking all file sizes of folders and files; the total amounts to 50% aprrox of drive capacity. (Can see hidden folders). Perhaps explorer is missing something?ta.

Answer:explorer not showing all files and folders?

Can you also see system files? How are you working out your totals? Are you including the system restore cache (system volume information folder) - its inaccessible to normal users, even administrators by default). If you turn system restore off and on again, it will clear this cache (which will be reflected by increased space left). You can also restrict the amount of space system restore uses.

This just started happening a week or two ago and it's a real pain!

If I put a DVD or CD into the corresponding drive on my computer and use Windows Explorer to display the contents, it does so just fine, as it's supposed to.

BUT, if I take that disc out and put another one in to look at its contents, the contents of the PREVIOUS disc will still be displayed! I've bailed out of Explorer, re-opened it, and tried again, but no luck-it will still show the contents of the previous disc.

What's the deal here? Is there a simple fix or is it time to find a tall building and a good time at which to push the machine off the top?

Thanks!

Answer:Windows Explorer Keeps Showing Same Files for Different Discs

If autorun is turned off for the optical drive, this will happen. Also, make sure you are running the latest updates from MS (including the latest service pack, etc.). Download the autoplay repair wizard from MS and run it to fix autorun problems.

Hi. For a few days, my portable Avidemux had stopped working for no apparent reason - a 'crash' message occurred with whatever type of video I tried to load. I thought it might be codec related so I installed the Shark007 codec pack (even though I don't believe in using codec packs). Avidemux started working again! Did Shark007 cure it? I can't be sure because, as a test, I then uninstalled it and Avidemux was still working. I now have a minor problem (see attachment). I have 'Windows 7 FLAC Property Handler' installed and despite using it's 'repair' feature, FLAC tag info just refuses to show. Can anyone suggest how I get the correct icons and file information back? Thanks in advance. (Also, how do I make a paragraph break on this forum...?)

Answer:Tags of FLAC files not showing in Explorer

Problem solved - FLAC tag info has suddenly appeared. I didn't do a reboot so can only assume that the 'repair' I did needed time to kick in. I'd still be interested to know how I could have shown this sentence as a new paragraph...

I connected my digital camera to the computer. Windows installed device software to use the camera.

Initially, I saw small image previews. Once all the pictures were loaded, I no longer saw the image previews. Now all I see is a Windows logo and a harddrive icon.

How can I see the image previews?

Answer:File explorer not showing image previews

click on the harddrive icon to open it

My external hard drive is no longer appearing in file explorer when plugged in. I do hear a tone when it is plugged in and the external hard drive has a light showing power. I looked at my hardware and ran troubleshooting and it didn't find any problem. I then went to my devices and uninstalled the USB components and then restarted the laptop (twice). The ext. hard drive still did not appear in file explorer.

I did look at my devices and printers and see "Ext HDD 1021." When I right click under the hardware tap it shows "WD Ext HDD 1021 USB Device" type of "Disk drives" and it states i is working properly. If I click on Properties, Events, I see the last activity:

One of our users has reported that their mapped drives were missing. Our user's mapped drives are all being pushed out by group policy so at first this was not an unusual report.

Upon investigation I seen the drives were in fact missing so I did a gpupdate to refresh the group policies which normally fixes the problem. This time it didn't, my backup plan is normally to manually map the drives needed until we figure why the group policy is not working.

Here is where things get weird:

When I go to map the drives, they are all already mapped. Then I find out from the user that they are all showing up correctly through their applications such as MS Office and Adobe Acrobat Pro. They can also access all of their files normally through each app. But they are not showing up in file explorer when we go to 'this PC'. A reboot normally fixes the problem though the user is starting to get a little annoyed of having to reboot each time.

Anyone have any ideas of what could be causing this?

Thanks,
~Brandon

I am in the process of scanning in numerous old photographs and I thought it would be an idea to change the file creation date to the date on which (approx) the photograph was taken. I am using ninotech dateedit for this. It works fine. If I right-click a file and look at its properties it gives the new creation date. However, on adding the date created column to details view in explorer it seems that any date prior to about 1980 is simply shown as blank. Can this be altered or is it a feature of explorer?

I have tried a few replacements for windows explorer and so far they all appear to have the same behaviour which suggests it is linked into the OS.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Answer:File creation date not showing in explorer

If I remember correctly, the earliest date that a PC can deal with is Jan 4th 1980 - as there was no need to have date capacity before this point

I don't think you'll be able to get around this, so it might be better to watermark the images with the date you need

I am hoping that somewhere out there may be able to assist with my problem as I have exhausted countless hours on the various Forums and in tweaking my system with no result to date.
The problem is that on my Home Network (Private) my main PC cannot ?see? the other devices on the network. I have two laptops, printer and Samba drive (on my D-Link Router) and the only item that shows up is my own PC.
The other PC running Win 10 pro can see ALL devices on the network.
I can reach the other devices by entering \\computername and then access the various drives and documents on the device but my PC will not display them using File Explorer.
Also, I have HomeGroup setup and working OK on both PC?s.
My PC is running Win 10 Home Version 1511 Build 10586.36 64bit along with the MS Office Suite 2013.
The solutions tried without success so far include:
Netsh winsock reset
Netsh int ip reset
Ipconfig/release
Ipconfig/renew
Ipconfig/flushdns
Uninstalled Client for Microsoft Networks then reinstalled
Uninstalled the Adaptor drivers the reinstalled
Checked the registry settings to ensure that the Network Category is correctly set to 1 (Private)
Checked and confirmed that all the required Services are running ? these include:

DHCP ClientDiagnostic Policy ServiceDiagnostic Service HostDiagnostic System HostDNS ClientPeer NetworkingServer
plus a few others that I can?t recall.
Deleted all programs from Programs and Features that are not recognized or not required.

Answer:Network Devices not Showing with File Explorer

The fall update broke the SMB (Server Message Block) component of the OS. Below is a work around that will fix your issue until such time as Microsoft patches this issue.
1. Open an administrator cmd prompt.
2. type the following: (press Enter after each line)

sc.exe config lanmanworkstation depend= bowser/mrxsmb10/nsi
sc.exe config mrxsmb20 start= disabled

then Restart the computer

To reverse this change and re-enable SMBv3 run the following commands at at the elevated command prompt

sc.exe config lanmanworkstation depend= bowser/mrxsmb10/mrxsmb20/nsi
sc.exe config mrxsmb20 start= auto

then Restart the computer

I have recently upgraded from Windows 8.1 Pro to Windows 10 Pro and everything was fine then. But recently I am experiencing an issue which is "Pinned items and Jump List are not displayed in File Explorer in both Taskbar and Start Menu". Pinned items and Jump Lists are displayed for other programs in Taskbar as usual but the issue is only with File Explorer. I have restarted the PC but still the problem persists and I have also disabled Cortana.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Ms

this fault I find really annoying and there's actually no excuse for this particular defect : When copying / moving files with File explorer - progress indicator doesn't show - which makes the whole thing unuseable if you are copying / moving a whole load of files.

(Latest build W10 Pro x-64).

Cheers

Hi all,

Built my new computer yesterday and installed Windows 7 64 bit, Enterprise.

I have noticed that the file type icons aren't showing in explorer, while little it is extremely annoying as when searching for an excel document for example I just look for the icon.
It seems to work for some icons and not others- as shown in the image below.

Is there any fix for this?

Thanks

I just put the 1511 upgrade on (for the third time, but that's another story). I've noticed that when I open File Explorer I have a WHOLE BUNCH of USB ports that have nothing plugged into them... I have no idea what the upgrade did, but these weren't visible previously. How do I turn them off?

And yes, I've gone into the File explorer options in the control panel and UNCHECKED "Hide empty drives". Didn't appear to make any difference...

Answer:Empty USB ports showing in file explorer

If you have a card reader, that's what those ports are for.
