Preferred Solution: unable to turn wireless on

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a Dell Inspiron laptop. My hard drive crashed and I purchased I new hard drive from Best Buy. I have succesfully installed XP on my laptop and everything is working fine, except I can not press SHIFT and F2 to turn on my wireless. Nothing happens when I press these buttons. I have read all over the internet and some people are able to press FN + F2 (or other combinations of keys) and this resolves the issue. I have tried all of them with no luck. When I go to device manager there are ??? marks under "other devices". If someone could please help me with turning on the wireless, Thank you

Answer:Unable to turn on wireless after Reinstall of XP

You need to reinstall the Dell drivers for your key system functions (video, audio, networking) if you haven't already done so.

If you have done so, I'm at a loss.

Do you have a Dell drivers CD?

Hi , I am unable to turn off or on wifi/bluetooth with the f7 key(alternatiely the wireless key). wifi and bluetooth are enabled always whch i feel is power consuming when not required. the key seems to be unusable.netbook config is :i3, 2gb ram, atheos ar9285 wireless lan adapter, atheos ar3011 bluetooth adapter i have installed both the wireless drivers from lenovo support. what should i do to correct this.

Answer:S400 unable to turn off wireless

hi Pravinrajpaul,

Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.

If you're running Windows 8, pressing the Airplane Mode (F7) turns OFF both the Wireless and Bluetooth radio. If you want to turn off just the Blueooth though, you will need to do it manually by:

1. Opening Device Manager (press Win Key+X > choose Device Manager)
2. Expand Bluetooth Radios then right click > disable the blueooth adapter.
3. For the wireless, choose Network Adapters under Device Manager and right click > disable the wireless module or boot into the BIOS by pressing the One Key Recovery button and under the Configuration Tab, set Wireless LAN Support to Disabled.

Hope this helps.

Ok, I am using a Gateway P-7807u laptop. Wireless network card worked perfectly fine when I first got it, but the video card was borderline dead on arrival so I had to send it back.

So I get my machine back today and I turn it on... only to find no wireless networks! So, after doing the diagnosis it happily tells me my wireless is turned off and must be turned on via physical switch or function key. So I switch the switch on the front to off and then back to on again. Nothing. No change. I press the FN + F2. No change.

I go to Windows Mobility Center and find wireless. "Turn Wireless On" is all greyed out. >_> I reinstalled the wireless card driver- no change. I checked under network manager and the wireless card is listed as enabled but not connected. (but again- when I try to find ANY networks I cannot, and when I do "diagnose" I come up with it telling me to turn the card on.)

So here I am. Any suggestions? If it turns out that the physical switch on the machine was broken by the wonderful tech people at gateway- is there any way to bypass that?

I just installed Windows 10 on a Toshiba Satellite laptop, model L755-5170. Prior to installation I performed a DoD type file shredder and NTFS format. The install worked perfectly. When I attempted to go on line to get updates and discovered that the "fn-F8" keyboard function to turn on Wi-Fi would not work. The function worked fine with Windows 7 installed.

All attempts to get Toshiba drivers for windows 10 has been in vane. The Windows install loaded Windows PS 2 drivers. Does anyone have any ideas on this problem? When I go online with this laptop (Gateway with Windows Vista) most sites want to offer driver for this box. I've looked at hundreds of Utube solutions but none address the problem of turning the Wi-Fi on.

Thanks for any help that might by out there.

Answer:Unable to turn on wireless Wi-Fi with "function F8" after Windows 10

That's pretty much why I avoided upgrading my Windows 7 notebook to Windows 10. Lack of manufacturer's drivers that supported hotkeys. You would need to find another way to turn on Wi-Fi.

I don't have a Toshiba machine but try looking here:

C:/Program Files/Toshiba/TBS

If you have that folder look for the TBSWireless.exe file and if present try clicking on it.

I have windows vista Home Premium 32BIT SP1
I had AVG free antivirus and was happy with it since I do not access any dodgy website whatsoever
My computer ran smoothly until lately I was notified that Resident Shield in AVG was disabled and I wasn't able to turn it on. I assumed that it was just an software error and it will fix itself when I updated it. But it didn't. Now AVG does not run at all. I cannot re-install it. I cannot install any anti-virus software. It will say something about a side-by-side configuration.
Also windows defender is off and i can't turn it on.
What should i do? ( Please help

Hi All,

I am using Windows 8.1 and had to refresh my computer as I was experiencing some problems. Everything seemed to be normal so I started slowly installing the programs I had before. Now a few days after, I find that my wireless device is Off and Flight Mode is On. I have been in settings but the relevant switches are disabled.
Can anybody tell me how to fix this please ? I really don't know how it happened. Can it be that my laptop is still infected ?

Thanks,
Robert

Yes, i have the same issue. Though it suffices if you deactivate and activate your WLAN adapter @ networkcenter, you don't need to reboot. This happened to me a couple of times as well.

I disabled Multi-Core in BIOS so i don't have regular lags.I always keep energy saving settings to "Maximum Performance" so i don't have regular contrast issues.I deinstalled ThinkAdvantage Access Connections so i don't have random WLAN Adapter "power offs".

Yesterday I used the Fn-F5 key to turn off the wireless radio. Today when I attempted to use the same key to turn the antenna back on, it fails to display on screen and will not turn the antenna back on. Other Function keys are working properly. I have disabled and re-enabled the card, reinstalled the drivers No change.

Fixed by reinstalling Energy Management. I had uninstalled as there seemed to be more than one energy/battery management program.

Nowadays, wireless router is a basic device at home because wireless access point (AP) is required. Sometime, a wireless repeater is also needed in a big house especially that with a big yard. Actually, without wireless router, only a Windows 7 laptop can be turned into a WiFi hotpot or a wireless repeater. Many discussions can be found online regarding how to turn Windows 7 laptop into a WiFi AP or virtual WIFI hotpot, however, the internet surfing is based on a local area connection. If wanna extend a WIFI signal to an enhanced new wireless AP, generally two wireless adapters are considered.

Here, differently, with only one wireless adapter but without 3rd-party software, we can setup a wireless repeater in a Windows 7 Home Basic or Home Premium laptop with only one wireless adapter. This can boost the wireless signal to smartphones, tablet computers, or other wireless devices. Also, the mobility and flexibility allow extending the signal to a yard or a garage conveniently as you want.

It is known that a virtual wireless adapter can be created with a third party software or only Windows 7 built-in commands. But in Windows 7 Home Basic or Home Premium, usually the virtual wireless adapter cannot be created or a hosted network cannot be started. I found a specific approach to clear the issues.

We can follow the steps (successful setup in my two Windows 7 Home laptops),

1. Click Start, point to All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and th... Read more

Answer:Turn Windows 7 Laptop into Wireless Repeater with One Wireless Adapter

Hi everyone... After reinstalling windows, I kept getting the "Turn on your wireless capabilty" message. I was pressing the Fn + F9 combination, yet nothing happened. I am sad to say, that lenovo has very poor driver download selection:for my model, i could download 4 different wireless adapter drivers (everything from intel to realtek). So how was i supposed to know which driver to get.... So the first thing I checked was the BIOS settings, if i had the wireless radio ON.... After downloading the correct driver... I still kept getting the same message... Checking the wireless card was not disabled in the Network diagnostics... AGAIN IT DID NOT WORK ANYWAY... The problem was not in the driver, or the BIOS, or the WINDOWS 7 SETTING. The problem was with the motherboard???bios???powermanagement??? setting I had to install the Hotkey Features Integration for Windows 7.... After that it was still not working... Then I installed Power Manager for Windows 7 (32-bit, 64-bit), Vista (32-bit, 64-bit) - ThinkPad Key combination still not working... no wireless internet THEN I INSTALLED ThinkPad Power Management driver for Windows 7 After EVERYTHING installed, the menu came back and i could enable the WIRELESS adapter. FML...Thank you lenovo, for making this a horrible experience...  Lenovo, I am dissapoint....

First time poster here, please let me know if you need additional info!

I just bought a second GTX 970. Both cards are detected in the Nvidia control panel, but the SLI option is greyed out.

Things I've tried so far:
-Reinstalled Nvidia drivers
-Swapped the card slots
-Flipped the SLI bridge
-Tried a different SLI bridge

Both cards continue to show up, but the SLI option does not become check-able in the Nvidia control panel. Hardware:
-EVGA GTX 970 ACX 2.0 Superclocked
-Gigabyte GTX 970 Windforce
-Mobo: Gigabyte GA-Z97X-Gaming 7 (should be SLI compatable)
-800Watt PSU

I am currently running on Win 7 Ultimate and have updated nvidia drivers. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Please let me know if I need to provide more info.

Hello,

I have a laptop dell xps M1210 with Intel(R) PROSet 3495 ABG. It has been working well for several years.

Yesterday morning I got an error: "Problem applying profile", then it couldn't been connected.

I did a lot of things.
1) Update the driver from 10.5 to version 12.1
2) Make sure "Wireless Zero Configuration" service started.
3) Uninstall the wireless adapter and reinstall it.
4) reboot the machine.
....

It is not working today. The error becomes "Intel(R) PROSet/Wireless Software was unable to detect a supported wireless adapter.".
By checking the device manager for connectivity, everything looks good.

One thing I must mention is sometimes I got an error that is "Microsoft Help and Support Center has encountered a problem and needs to close...."

The detail is Error signature

I have a x61 with built-in wireless Intel WiFi Link 4965AGN network adpater (driver updated to latest version 12.0.0.82). Just converted my wireless 802.11g router (Linksys) to a 802.11n router (D-Link DIR-655).  Wired connection works great, but wireless is not able to connect in 802.11n mode (only connect in 802.11g mode at the slower 54Mbps). ThinkVantage Access Connections (updated to version 5.02) can identify the new router as 802.11n at 100% signal strength but is not able to connect in 802.11n mode.  Tried to edit the wireless mode of the location profile in Access Connections but there is no selection for 802.11n.  I cannot find any more setup I can edit.  Any known issue with ThinkVantage for 802.11n connection or compatibility issue with Intel WiFi Link 4965 AGN network adaptor?

Hello!

I will start this off by freely admitting I'm not great with computers and usually don't know what I'm talking about.

I have an Acer Aspire 4720Z laptop.
I recently wiped it clean and installed Windows XP, and have not been able to connect to wireless internet ever since.
I used the Acer website to download the drivers, extracted all the files, etc.

When I open Intel PROSet/Wireless, I get an error message that it is "unable to detect a supported wireless adapter. Please install a supported adapter."

Also, Intel PROSet/Wireless does not appear on my Device Manager. (The only things that are listed under "Network adapters" is 1394 Net Adapter and Broadcom Netlink Gigabit Ethernet.) I feel like that's probably part of the problem, even if I'm not sure why, haha.

What can I do to get my wireless access back?

Thank you.

Hello,I have replaced our old router with a new one and can't seem to get it to work.I have a Sierra Wiress 306 3g Modem, connected with Bigpond. It is working when plugged directly into the computer via USB.I had it plugged into a Netcomm router, which was ethernet cable connected to the destop and also our TIVO device. I was able to link o the internet wirelessly from my laptop - though not if someone was using the desktop at the same time. I suspect an IP address conflict was at fault here, though had no clue how to fix that.My actual problem is my Netcom router no longer works and I've had to purchase another. When I plug my router into the computer I get an error message saying there is another computer on this network with the IP address.... but I tried to change the IP address of the router, to no avail....I returned that router and got another and ended up with the same problem. Something tells me there's nothing wrong with the router or my computer, but perhaps it's my incompetence. That's where you come in...Thanks,Jennifer.

Hello All,I built my own pc about 2 years ago, and am now having trouble turning it on.The PC consists of an AMD ATHLON 64 processor, and Asus A8n-SLi Premium mothrboard, and bvidia 660gt graphics card, and geil ram. Before the PC "broke" I was getting blue screens very often - which occured at various times after I had turned the PC off. However, on opening the case I found out that the fan controller knob that controlled the CPU fan was faulty - that is to say, that if the fan controller was not set to the maximum level, it would not be on! Note, before I had opened the case, I had turned the fan controller on to the full setting a few times - so the CPU fan was at its maximum - and the blue screens still occured. Im not sure, but I do not think the fan could have been off for the whole period of time that the blue screens ocurred, but it is fair to say that it is possible that the cpu fan may have been off for some time (days or weeks) when the pc was on, before i noticed it. But I had been checking the temperature whilst the blue scfreens were ocurring and I did not see anythiin suspcous - usually the cpu temp was about 40 degrees celsius. The Heatsink I have is maden of copper and is rather large, and the rear case fan behind it is very close, which could possible explain the reason why the pc may have been able to run without the cpu fan working. On opening the case, and removing the heat sink, I also noticed that on the base of the heatsink, where it is contact with the ... Read more

Answer:Unable to Turn On Self-Built PC

I think that the thing to do is to remove everything bar the RAM and graphics card, thats HDD, sound card etc, and try and turn it on. If the mobo is ok it should still go through the POST checks and tell you that it can't find a system disc. This will tell you that the mobo is ok so the problem is elsewhere. Then add components one at a time booting up each time until it fails, this will tell you which bit of hardware is knackered. If it won't boot in the first place and you have 2 sticks of RAM, try it with just one, then swap to the other stick if that doesn't work. The green light on the mobo suggests that the power supply is ok.Regards Giant68

I read through the sticked posts, and used the search option to see if I could find a solution first before making a topic but to no avail. Although I came across the opposite of my situation where their is no POST, or the PC does not turn on.

I returned to find a blank monitor and the HDD light on the front of my PC blinking sporadically. Also no period of pressing or holding the power button would turn off or restart the system. I ended up having to unplug the power supply to shut it down. Whenever I plug the power supply in again I am met with the same issue. No screen a continuously blinking HDD light and the inability to turn off or restart using the power button. Case, Video Card, and Heat sink fans are still being powered/operating.

New components I have added in the past 3 months are:

-Kingston 512mb ram
-Gecube ATI Radeon 9250 PCI
-Western Digital 160gb HDD
So far I have tried this and started system up again:

-Removing new ram installed. (Same results)
-Disconnecting IDE cables to optical devices and FDD (Same results)
-Disconnecting power and IDE cables to Hard Drives (Same results)
Additional information that may be useful is that for the past month at least once every week to two weeks my computer would make a single beep. I took this as nothing since this was not during start up and felt it did not signify anything. Also for the past month about once a week my monitor would go blank for a second then return back to the desktop.

Before I start, forgive me because I am on my phone.
So my laptop notified me it was repairing a driver and in the middle of the process it changed screens and tried to restart. Now my computer will not turn fully on and goes to a blue screen. Says it cannot repair itself. I've tried system repair and using the command prompt for multiple things I read online. Nothing has worked and I am getting frustrated. I have not had this computer but a few months, but it does have my hard drive in it from a previous computer which is about 2 years old. I'm using the old hard drive because I wanted to save all my files and since this laptop does not have a CD drive I cannot backup my files unless on a flash drive.

So I am stuck. System repair does not work with or without the command prompt. With command prompt the error 0x80070003.

Says that CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED.

Any help is gladly appreciated.

Hello, my computer was running great until a lightning storm recently. I was on the computer during the storm then I had a surge and I believe it went through my cat5 wire and into my computer. It will not turn on now and I was wondering if anyone could give me some suggestions on what it could be. Also does anyone know how I could run a diagnostics test on the computer to see what is wrong. Thank you.

I am unable to turn my computer off. I click on start, then turn off computer, then turn off computer again and then a message comes up saying mcafee virus scan is updating in the background,do not try to turn off or restart your computer until this is finished. This has been going on for 3 days now,can anyone help.

I assume you don't mean it is taking 3 days to switch your computer off.I think I would dump mcafee and get AVG free and also Adaware, Spybot and Spywareblaster.

Yesterday I had the laptop on, then it abruptly shut off.  It was not plugged into the charger at that time.  I then plugged it in (the charger is working, showing green), but nothing.  When I plugged the charged into the laptop the light on the laptop flashed one time.  I left it charged for about an hour, tried again and still no luck.
I just unplugged the battery and drained the power by holding down the power button for about one minute.  Then assembled it back together, plugged in the charged and tried turning the laptop on again.  Still no luck.
Laptop: Dell Inpspiron 15 5000 Series

Answer:Unable to turn laptop on

Test with the battery removed from the laptop =* Disconnect the AC adapter from the laptop* Remove the battery* Press and hold down the laptop power button for 10 seconds* Reconnect only the AC adapter* Power the laptop on. If the laptop powers on and goes into Windows, the AC adapter and power port are functioning

Thanks to you guys I was able to remove the trojan from my pc...and then I got to checking on some settings. For some reason my firewall is turned off and I can't turn it back on. The following message is in my security center:

The Security Center is currently unavailable because the "Security Center" service has not started or was stopped. Please close this window, restart the computer (or start the "Security Center" service), and then open the Security Center again.

If I click on the Firewall icon anyway the message at the top says: For your security, some settings are controlled by Group Policy.

I have no idea where to set those or why or how they got changed. From what I could find on Microsoft site (trying to read that is ridiculous) it says the following:

You install Windows XP SP2 on a client computer that is located in a Microsoft Windows Small Business Server (SBS) 2003-based network.
• You have joined a client computer that is running Windows XP SP2 to a Windows SBS 2003-based network

What does all this mean and how can I turn my firewall back on?

Hello, I am having the same issue discussed in this thread:(My tablet is not able to turn on at all - and there is no indication that it is charging when it's connected to a charger or computer.)https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Android-Yoga-Series-Tablets/Lenovo-Yoga-Tablet-2-not-switching-on/td-p/... But NONE of the solutions posted in this thread has worked for me, so now I don't know what to do.All I can get out of the "soft-recovery" solution by holding down the power button for 64 seconds is a little flash around the power button that fades away instantly and nothing happens.  Thank you for reading and please help me ASAP.

Hey guys. I hope this thread is going in the correct section of the forums. I am experiencing problems with getting my hard disk drives to turn off when not in use. I have changed the settings in power options under the ''balanced'' preferred power plan and have set it to turn off after 90 minutes if the drives are idle. This doesn't seem to do anything, i have tried setting a different time limit, still no joy with that either. Anyone know what could be causing this? It did used to work perfectly before when my PC was new but now it has stopped working. No idea why. I am running Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 64bit. Any help with this issue is welcome. Thank you.

Do you mean autorun when you insert a CD or DVD into the drive?
If so go here
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/967715
and click the enable button. Or read further and do the manual changes yourself.

If you instead mean the program Auto Runs, go here http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902
download it and simply click the exe to run it.

My father's laptop crashed two weeks ago, I tried to troubleshoot it but nothing is working. The laptop is exactly two years old and runs on windows 10. The laptop will not turn on, but, on the rare occasion it does, it reports an error almost like a hard drive or motherboard error. The laptop has been only been used a handful of times within the last year and never operated serious programmes that would challenge the computers operating systems. I have a basic knowledge in laptops and to me, it appears to be a hard drive/ motherboard error which is preventing the laptop from operating. Unfortunately, my father never renewed the warranty so I'm enquiring if there are any services available within HP to repair the latop.

I own a Gateway C-140 Tablet PC. It originally came with a Integrated Intel® 3945 802.11a/b/g wireless Mini PCI-E card. I did not have great luck dual booting into Linux with it so I purchased a replacement, the Gigabyte GN-WI01GT. The GN-WI01GT has a AR5005 GS Atheros 5th generation chipset.

This new wireless card works great in Linux now however I can not get it to work in Vista Home Premium (i know i know, but its the best OS for a tablet). Seems like I swapped my problems

I have talked with a Gigabyte tech and a Gateway tech.

The gigabyte rep suspected that the device needed to be enabled via a button on the side of the computer. On my tablet the button is using the function key and F2. I tried this and my wireless card was still unable to detect any wireless networks. He checked the driver version (7.3.1.42) which was the latest. The device is showing up in the device manager as enabled. Vista says the device is working properly. He also informed me I should not need any separate programs to connect to a wireless network like some manufactures do.

The gateway tech was of no use and basically asked me to check the FN + F2 to enable the device told me it was a 3rd party product and gave me a gateway pay by minute tech line.

Since the new card is functioning in Linux perfectly fine I find it hard to believe that it is something as simple as enabling the wireless using FN + F2 since you would think I would be require to do it in Linux as well before it worked.

Answer:New Wireless Card, Unable to view Wireless Networks

I came up with a semi solution and a semi diagnosis for this problem. I put BOTH cards in at once putting an antenna on each. I noticed that when I booted into windows that the wireless light showed it was still disabled and in fact it was disabled. I used the FN+F2 key to enable wireless and *POOF* both cards work in vista now.

So my guess is there was sort of hardware check that was disabling power to my wireless or something.

and it SHOULD NOT be read only anymore, correct?

Well, I go to properties again, and it is read only still.

Answer:Unable to turn off read only in WINXP

Windows XP is very protective of its files. What are some of the file names are you trying to change.

BTW: Changing the folder properties changes the default only. Any new file will have the new properties. So you need to select all the file you want to change, right click select Properties, and change the properties.

Hi all,

I'm using a Dell E7240, did a fresh install of Windows 10.
I can pick up all sorts of WIFI connections and connect to them successfully.

However when I wanted to use my internal 3G modem it tells me that the "radio is off" and I can't enable this in settings?
Its greyed out, if I enable flight mode is greys out the WIFI and Bluetooth switches.
When I disable flight mode it allows me to turn WIFI and Bluetooth off/on but "radio" remains greyed out.

Checked BIOS settings, checked driver for the Mobile Broadband Card, disabled and enable the adapter.
Still does not want to allow me to enable the radio. I can manage the SIM PIN so I can change it or turn on or off.

It even shows me the network provider if I disable the SIM PIN, but the radio remains off!

Any ideas?

Thanks
Carl

Hello,
Windows 8.1 64 bit operating system. I don't have a Microsoft account.
I have two different external drives. I am unable to get file history to turn on with either drive. I have done a web search and have seen that others have this same issue. Is this an issue with file history? I am able to view files/folders on my external drives. I have tried different USB ports and I get the same results. I have tried to turn on file history through the control panel and through pc settings.  I turned on file history in services under admistrator tools and it does turn on but when I close that window file history turns off.  My externals are formated to NTFS.
Also tried to use file history with a flash drive but was unable to get it to work.
If this is an issue that can't be resolved should I use software such as FBackup or Genine Time line?
I use free aomei backupper for system backups.  They do have a file/folder save option.  What would be the difference in useing any of the above software or using copy/paste to put folders/files on external?
Any help and suggestions are appreciated.
The first two screen shots are from the control panel. I didn't capture the whole control panel window.

So for the past two days I've had a weird problem with my laptop after it ran out of power.  It didn't want to connect online but that was fixed with command prompts and now the firewall is turned off. I've done a malwarebytes scan in safe mode with nothing found, tried doing some troubleshooting in the services and so on and so forth.

Basically when I try to turn on the firewall it says that it needs to be done manually and then when you try to turn it on manually it comes up with error code 0x8007042c.  I've tried turning on the service but I get "Error 1608: The dependency service or group failed to start."

Windows Defender unable to turn On.

I recently had Avast antivirus installed, just for an additional scan. But removed it properly using Revo Uninstaller.

I ran Services.msc and found that Windows Defender is set to manual (but is unable to be set to automatic, location is greyed).

When I run Action Center, in order to Turn ON Windows Defender it simply opens Windows/System32.

Found the following while researching online,

Performing miscellaneous checks:
 * Windows Defender Disabled
   [HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Defender]
   "DisableAntiSpyware" = dword:00000001

Unable to set to '0', displays an error message..
  "Cannot edit DisableAntiSpyware"

Please help.

Hi.
I am having some problems with my computer. I had a trojan, that I now have got rid off, but the thing is that I can't turn on the secutiry center. I get this message:

Can you help me?

Answer:unable to turn on security center

What makes you sure you got rid of it?

I would d/l , install, update and scan with MBam , free from here:

Malwarebytes.org

And also SuperAntispyware, free from here

SUPERAntiSpyware.com - Downloads

M$ MSRT is also available - thorough, but it takes a while also free from here :

The Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool helps remove specific, prevalent malicious software from computers that are running Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008, Windows XP, or Windows 2000

If you are prompted to download or scan with some other "spyware cleaner tool" - don't.

Hope it helps

HomeGroup Listener  The HomeGroup Listener service terminated with service-specific error %%-2147023143.

My Windows firewall kept freezing my PC every time I downloaded a file and after a lot of trouble I managed to turn it off permanently because it kept turning on by itself. However, I'm no longer able to turn it back on.

Answer:Unable to turn on windows firewall

CreativeSelf,

Welcome to TenForums!

Try restoring the firewall settings by right-clicking the white Windows icon on the left of the TaskBar, and selecting: Command Prompt (Admin)
At the elevated command prompt, type the following and press Enter:

Code:
netsh advfirewall reset

The command restores the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security policy to the default policy, returns all Group Policy settings to Not Configured, and deletes all connection security and firewall rules.

Hi friends,

I?m unable to turn on my firewall, I get message Widows cannot start firewall/internet connection, sharing ics service. I have Satellite P10-504 with WXP SP3.

Any ideas welcome

Thanks
Colin

Answer:Satellite P10-504 - unable to turn firewall on

There are some Microsoft knowledge articles about this issue:

[Certain Administrative Templates from the Windows XP Security Guide may prevent you from starting the Windows Firewall service in Windows XP Service Pack 2|http://support.microsoft.com/kb/892199]

[You cannot start the Windows Firewall service in Windows XP SP2|http://support.microsoft.com/kb/920074]

Check both? maybe you could solve it using the workaround described in these articles

Good luck

Any ideas?

Thanks
Carl

Answer:Windows 10 - unable turn on radio?

Hi there and Welcome to Ten Forums,

Have you checked any latest driver for your 3G modem? I'd also find out if there's any incompatibility issue.

Whenever I click on "Turn on media streaming" the button goes grey and the cursor show the system is busy but then nothing happens.  When I was first setting up the Windows 7 RC I tried this and I was able to access a list of devices which included my xbox360 but I have never been able to get to that menu again.  I have tried going through WMP12 and turning streaming on but that does not work either.  The only other odd thing that happens is about 50% of the time that I try to start WMP12 it will not load at all and I have to restart my system and try to open it again.

Answer:Unable to turn on media streaming

Ok I did up until a few seconds ago have the exact same problem as everyone else.
Here is what I did to successfully fix the problem.

Click Start and then run.
In the run box type or past "%userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Media Player
" without the quotation marks.
Now it is really this simple, delete all files that end in .wmdb (note  that you may have to untick "hide known file extensions for known file types" in order to see the file extensions).
All you are doing is deleting the information about where media player can find the files you play.

Now simply open up media play and manage your library again.
Thats it your all done and can now turn streaming on.

I have a Samsung R-580 Laptop running Windows 7/Home/64-bit. Still in the first week of ownership. I have not been able to get it to hibernate. Did search on this and other forums looking for hints. Here's what I tried:

(1) Control Panel > Power Options. Opened details on the current active plan. There were four options under two states (On Battery and Plugged In): Dim display, Turn off display, Put computer to sleep, Adjust brightness. I assume that "Put the computer to sleep" is the old Windows XP "standby" mode ... thus, no hibernation option.

(2) Opened Start > Shutdown and it gives me six options, the last of which is Hibernate. Alas, when clicking this, all it does is shut down using the sleep/standby mode.

(3) Examined Drive C using windows explorer. Made sure "Show hidden files/folders" was enabled. Alas, no hiberfil.sys on the system drive.

(4) Opened the Command Prompt in Administrator mode, and executed powercfg -h on ... no results.

(5) While still in Command Prompt (sysadm mode) executed svc /scannow to see if there were any system problems. "Windows Resource Protection did not find anyh integrity violations."

(6) Disconnected "nano" receiver for Logitech wireless mouse to see if a USB driver was interfering ... no help!

Any ideas?

Answer:Unable to turn Hibernation on in new Laptop

Try this:
Windows Does Not Start After Sleep

That is not your problem, but it shows how to disable Hybrid sleep. With that disabled, you can either sleep or hibernate instead of just sleep.

I've been trying to Turn off my display using the power settings in Vista 64 which didn't work for me.
Tried using different programs like Mon0 1.1 etc, i downloaded from Cnet just to turn off my
display but all failed. Display keep turning back on, even when there's no programs running.
I think there are programs running at the background which i don't know what is it,
keeping my display or my computer from going to sleep mode. But seems too complicated for a novice
like me to understand how PC and OS works.

Is there anyway to put the display to sleep mode?
Can anyone help me? Thanks

I am running bootcamp vista 64 on my imac.

Answer:Unable to turn off Display in Vista

Didnt really solve my problem. Found out it's the problem with iMac bootcamp which Apple will likely fix. Something to do with the headphone in-put on iMac, windows can't sleep when it's plugged in.

Thanks all for help and viewing.

Hi, I am having a problem turning my Windows Firewall on. When I try through the Security Center it gives the error message 'Security Center can't turn on Windows Firewall'. If click the link to turn it on manually I get 'Windows cannot start the Windows Firewall service'. I'm not sure what the virus/malware is called that causes this. I have done a couple of scans using Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, and after removing a couple of suspect items it seems to be clear. Just leaves the Firewall issue.
I am using Windows Vista 32 bit, and below is my FRST log, wasn't sure exactly what log would help.

Try holding down the function key and hitting the numlock or scroll lock key, this is usually how you engage or disengage the laptops function keys on the keyboard. I've been running Windows 10 at home for about a year now. From the beginning I've set it to go into sleep mode if left unattended for more than 20 minutes. When I come back I just click the mouse or hit the space bar and it wakes up and the sign-in window appears. Since the last Microsoft update on 14th Jan the sign-in window no longer appears. I have to press ctrl-alt-del to get the sign-in window.

On this forum a tutorial says that I need to disable the Secure Sign-in feature. I entered netplwiz in the run (win-R) window. The user accounts window came up but the "Require users to press ctrl-alt-del" checkbox is already unchecked.

What am I doing wrong? Is there some other setting that I need to change so that I don't have to keep pressing the ctrl-al-del buttons?

Answer:Unable to turn off Secure Sign-in

Hello Andy, and welcome to Ten Forums.

You might check using the other options in the tutorial below to see if you may have secure sign-in enabled in one of them instead.

I recently was assisted in removing malware/spyware from my computer. When I was instructed to turn off system restore and reset a new start point I found that System Restore was all ready Off and not monitoring and of my drives. I was unable to untick the box, receiving the following message:

"System Restore encountered an error trying to enable/disable one or more drives. Please restart your machine and try again."

I restarted 3 times and still could not change the setting.

I launched Super Anti Spyware and tried to fix the issue through that program but it was unsuccessful.

I then checked services.msc to see if it was set to automatic, and it was. When I clicked start I received the following message:

"The System Restore Service service on local computer started and then stopped. Some services top automatically if they have no waork to do, for example, the Perfomance Logs and Alerts service"

I only have my original Win XP CD with no service packs. I have updated to SP3 via Windows Update.

I have 2 hard drives: 1st is 160gig with over 80% free (Drive C) 2nd is 40gig partitioned into 2 20gig sectors (D & E) D has 20% free and E has 50% free.

Any assitance with this issue would be appreciated. I hope I have included enough info to get started.
