Preferred Solution: Free Vs. Paid Anti-virus Software.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

my anti virus is due to run out in a week,am with kas 7 at the mo,do i buy another year of kaspersky or go for a free one like avg,do u have to have a seperate firewall prog with AVG? also ,do i have to use a removal tool for kaspersky or just delete from add/remove programmes ?

Answer:paid anti virus or free one?

There is absolutely no reason to pay for any AV program with the likes of Avast and AVG being available for free.Yes, you do need a separate firewall with both Avast and AVG.

I like using paid antivirus.I've used the free trial but I always uninstall them before its runs out so I dont have to pay.I've used one in particular. How much time should you leave it before you install it again ?

Answer:Paid anti virus:how often can you use them for a free trial?

Once a trial version has expired it cannot be used again. Reinstalling it will not work.
Purchase the software or use one of the many free products.

There's a really decent assortment of free anti-virus software available on the Internet these days. Why are they free? It's a form of advertising, a way to "get in the door". Do something well, get positive reviews for it, then entice people to pay for additional features. Some free anti-virus is more obnoxious than others. Some will give you pop-up reports of the last scan results, tacking on offers to upgrade to a paid version. Others will just pop up offers at random, not in connection to any scanning activities.

OK, so if you're on a budget you've got free anti-virus installed. But if you don't need the added features offered in the paid versions, are you just as well protected for the installed functionality? The effectiveness of these programs relies on the breadth and frequency of comprehensive virus definitions, plus periodic updates to the engines for how they perform their scans. The software must know what to look for. If the free and paid versions get the same subscription updates, then they should be equally effective, right? Or... has anyone learned something to the contrary? If you can afford it, is it really best to buy your anti-virus software?

Answer:Does functionality of free anti-virus work just as well as paid versions?

The primary difference between the paid and the free is features. All have basic Anti Virus and automatic updates. The paid versions have other features such as firewalls, email protection, spam protection etc. If you scan with the free Malwarebytes and use a quality free anti virus, you have all the protection that you need. Bottom line, I do not think that any intelligent computer owner really needs the paid version if he or she uses common sense.
In some ways the paid versions are better, since they are not overloaded with features they may be faster

My ISP is offering free access to a McAfee. "$120 value".

Is this going to be as good as if I actually went to the store and bought it? Is it really the same thing?

Answer:Free virus software as good as "paid"?

It should be the very same as if you paid for it. But your ISP is who paid for it and if you change ISP's then the software will not update. Otherwise it's as good as if you paid for it.

I have tried a few of them but have settled on Bitdefender Free due to it's high ratings, very small footprint/system resource useage, and simple install and forget it. Currently my laptop is protected by McAfee antivirus software including firewall and anti spyware that came with it when purchased just under a year ago. As it is due to expire shortly can anybody recommend what is the best/most effective free antivirus software and is it a viable alternative to paying for this protection?
On my old XP desk top I used AVG free version but seem to recall that it would take forever on booting up to update. Was that just because it was running on XP? My laptop operates on Windows 8.1.
How do I go about installing free antivirus - uninstall all McAfee software then download? Is it that straight forward?

Answer:free anti-virus software available

I have never paid for Anti virus and never had any problems using one of the freebies, that said I'm not into trawling the seamier side of the internet or mass P2P downloading.
There are currently loads of free AV progs, many of them submitted to VirusBulletin and other independent testers with good results.
Usual suggestions are :- avast!, AVG, Avira, 360, Bitdeffender & Roboscan
As to sequence of events download the installation file first, disconnect from the internet, install the new package reconnect and update. My current favourite is avast! but they're all pretty good.

Now I don't really use any virus protection myself (other than visiting trenmicro's housecall once every few months), so what is a good free one. It needs to be able to actively scan incoming emails (which are coming through earthlink's totalaccess software), basically that's all I'm worried about as she doesn't download stuff. I had hooked my mom up with a good one once, forget the name but it stopped updateing and seemed to go out of business. Thanks!

Answer:Best free anti virus software?

Honest answer...there never has been...never will be...a "best" AV since there will never be one which provides 100% protection.  There are many that are reliable unless not properly used/updated by the system owner...or otherwise left useless by the lack of computer security by users.

Hey everyone, just wanting to know what anti-virus protection would work best with Earthlink/WIN XP and with MS Security System? What I have used before was: Norton (Symantec)...worked way too slow. Now using Earthlink's own Protection Control Center program. Not sure if I like that one either. Updated it once and then had all these different windows pop up asking if I should let them come 'in' or 'out' of my Internet connection. ALSO, note that for the first time I had a blue screen come up and tell me that I had a serious 'ERROR' and it gave instructions on what to do if that wasn't the first time that happened, or it just said to turn off my computer. Nothing was lost that I could tell, but it sure did scare me. What was that? It has happened twice now in like a few days time.

Ok, I am looking for something that any dummy can use that doesn't slow down my already not so fast computer. Also, don't forget to give me advice about what works best with MS Security. I have looked on MajorGeeks and found what was popular....but, need some input before I make another change on my system.

Thanks bunches,
mamma

One of my PC's is still running Win98se which also means I can't even use the lastest version of Norton anyway. So just to recap I'm after Free (preferably) Anti-Virus and Firewall software that has a good track record, is not resource hungry and will work on both a Window 98se and Windows Home XP. BTW these two machine are networked together and the Win98 machine provides an internet connect for the XP machine in case this makes a difference? Thanks very much in advance for your suggestions. :)

I used to use AVG but apparently the free version is being discontinued. What's another good anti-virus software that is free and is not a memory hog?

Answer:Best anti-virus software that's free and not a memory hog?

If you're happy with AVG, are you sure it's being discontinued? I can't find any news about that, but support for version 7.5 is being discontinued, it seems - version 8.0 is current. There was a spate of concern about AVG being discontinued in 2006 too, when support for an old version ended. Seems that they should make their alerts clearer.

I have just received my January 2014 mag and read the article about anti virus programs. Can it actually be true that Microsoft Security Essentials is the worst performing of the 26 tested with score 9.5? Seems incredible to me. I put this onto my wife's laptop recently. My own PC has (paid for) Bullguard (score 15). Seems we would both be better off with QIHOO (score 15.5) Never heard of Qihoo before but PC Advisor recommends it. Any comments please.

Yes, I have one, and that is why not use something like the free version of Avast. I have been using it for years without having problems, and I suspect many others use Avast as well!.

I don't know how many times I have downloaded anti virus, anti spyware, anti maleware software that said "DOWNLOAD FREE" Yeah, the download is free but if you want to use it you have to pay for it!

Where and what can I download that is both free to download and to use?

Comodo Internet Security has a free suite as well as a paid one. It is third down on the list. HiDoes anyone know if there's good reliable free anti virus software out there for MS Windows Server 2003? We currently use free AVG but obviously its gonna run out on 15th Jan and wont update as theyve stopped letting servers use it :(On our network of 4 computers we are using free Norton anti virus via BT Yahoo Broadband protection, I was unsure if this could also be used on the server? or if Norton will also refuse to be put on a server (havent tried as id have to remove AVG first, if it didnt work wed have no anti virus at all on server!).

Ive been advised not to renew my subcription by a friend and instead use Avast free anti virus software, as he said its just as good.

Im a bit wary as I feel that a free service cant be as good as one you pay for. Is this the case?

I found a new FREE anti-virus software for 90 days with full functions when surfing on net. It is AVL MINI. To my surprise, it is so small, and it uses very little system memory as scanning. Therefore, I can do my other work at the same time. In the beginning, I was very doubt if it could protect my computer well. So I downloaded a virus package to test, AVL detected and killed almost all viruses. But other anti-virus softwares can only killed half of the viruses at most. I was so content with it. And I had introduced it to some of my friends; they said AVL actually protected their computer well. The most important thing is that AVL can be compatible with other anti-virus softwares, so you need not remove them to install and use AVL. I think this function is very useful; you need not worry that AVL will conflict with other anti-virus softwares in your PC and damage your computer. It is very convenient and safe for me. Believe me, it is a wise choice to use AVL Antivirus software.

Good evening! I am not sure I have an issue or not but I have never had an anti virus scan return such a thing and the list has grown over the past week. I am currently running Microsoft XP Home Media Center and I am not exactly sure which files have added themselves as locked over the specified time.

I recently downloaded HijackThis but as that forum seems to be jammed I didn't want to add to the workload there. What should I do to look into this matter? I have done the following already:

1. Scanned with Kapersky - Trojan found in Outlook Express deleted items - cleared those and now clean
2. Attempted TrendMicro's Housecall without success - wouldn't run on my machine although it HAS in the past
3. Ran Malwarebyes and Windows Defender with no infections showing

Am I paranoid? What other information can I provide to make that determination?

Thank you guys very much in advance for any help. You all do an amazing thing here!

Answer:Possible Anti-Virus Software Issue / AVG Free 8.5.285

Hello. these are normal findings in scans. They are skipped files. When the scanner runs it comes across these Operating System files and they are not allowed "locked" by the system to be scanned. It is a way of the system protecting important files from being accessed by what may be a dangerous device.
If you still feel a little paranoia feel free to post that section of the AVG scan that showed them.

I am building a new server for our office that is running windows 2008 server and I am looking for some good free anti-virus software that will run on it if anybody has any suggestions. I am a huge fan of Avast but the free version will not work on windows 2008 server and my office is tight on money and will not purchase the server version So any suggestions on free or really cheap anti-virus software that will run on server will help a lot.

Ones I have tried are: Avast, Antivir, and Panda Cloud with no luck.

Answer:Free anti-virus software that will run on windows 2008?

There will be no free AV software that will run on a server-level OS. You will need to purchase something, most vendors have SMB bundles that will secure a server and 5 clients for a few hundred bucks (ESET comes to mind here).

Can anyone recommend good, reliable alternatives? I have been told about free AV software from AVG and would like to know if this is a good program. Also, is the Windows Firewall program sufficient or is it best to install another?

Answer:Advice on free Anti-Virus and Firewall Software

The windows firewall only operates in one direction. It does not monitor outgoing traffic. You need (free) Zone Alarm. Don't forget to turn the windows firewall off AVG is good as a virus checker but some find difficulty in obtaining updates from the free version web server. I suggest you try (free) Avast first. It works like a dream
