T440 m.2 upgrade questions, possible to add internal battery?

Question: T440 m.2 upgrade questions, possible to add internal battery?

I have what appears to be a msata and a m.2 slot. The msata has a Intel dual band wireless card in it. The slot to the left looks like a m.2 slot with nothing in it. Will any 2242 ssd fit in it or does it have to be single sided. Also the laptop has no internal battery just a spacer. Is it possible to add a battery to this model? There is no 3rd m.2 slot under the internal battery spacer, can this be added to the t440? Laptop is the standard t440 (not the s or p)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

After buying a T440 (not throuh lenovo), I realized that it has capability to hold an internal battery. But the item I bought didn't have one. Instead it came with a 6 cell external battery which protrudes in the back. Is there any way I can have internal battery added now? I see that some sites like Amazon are selling replacement internal batteries; can I buy it and install in my laptop? Thanks in advance for your replies!

I have a T440 laptop that suddenly decided it's having an error with the internal battery that shipped with the system (which is a genuine battery, has not been touched/removed and was working fine until this morning).  The error displaying is: "The battery installed is not supported by this system and will not charge. Please replace the battery with the correct Lenovo battery for this system." I updated to the atest BIOS a few weeks ago, have the latest Power Manager and Power Manager driver as of a few days ago. External/removable battery is fine. Any thoughts on how to resolve this, or anyone else having this issue?

Hello, I've just bought a second hand T440, and windows 7 tells me that battery #1 is "missing" (battery #2 is ok).If i take out the external battery while in BIOS or Windows, the computer shuts down, so I believe it's not a driver issue. My BIOS is up to date (2.29), set to default configuration.Do you think it's a hardware issue? Thanks for your helpPierre

Answer:T440 - Internal battery not detected

I think whoever you purchased this second hand laptop off of removed your internal battery. that would just be too **bleep** funny if that were the case. (Yep. Should have done more research before I tried this method).

I just installed a clean (non-upgrade) version of Windows 7 on my home machine. I had two drives that were 80-90% full, so I borrowed a drive from work and cloned my primary drive C)to that drive K). I was thinking I'd have a empty drive with a fresh install of Windows 7, and then the old drive to transfer files and programs off of.

Seemed like a slick idea. I figured the fresh install would completely wipe my old primary drive. It did not. The clean install even kept my old windows file, mounted under /old. Seems like all I did was further junk up my hard drive and make the process of migrating to 7 more confusing.
Windows has "Windows Easy Transfer", requires an external drive. This seems clunky as shit. Why do they care if I'm transferring from an external or internal drive? Is there any work-around to pull the data off the cloned K) drive?
I actually wanted to completely wipe my C) drive. Start with a fresh slate, and sift the wheat from the chaff while transferring files and programs back over. But all my old data is still showing up on C). Note: All of this data was cloned to K). Should I just wipe C) and reinstall on a fresh drive?
Are programs transferable? Or will I need to reinstall?
Steam.exe updated itself and seems to work fine. I noticed some tearing while playing TF2. Maybe driver related?

I'm heading off to work and won't be able to play with this for a few hou... Read more

Answer:Windows 7 upgrade questions: Migrating files from a cloned internal drive?

What OS were you upgrading from? You can't actually do an upgrade from XP anyway; but the "Fresh install" does save all the old files.

sounds like you didn't delete the existing partition or at least format the drive prior to the Win7 install.

why not just copy/paste from the cloned drive?
You cannot simply copy/paste/migrate applications; they require additional registry entries, possibly registered dll driver files, etc. You would need to reinstall the apps.

To use the Windows Easy Transfer, you still need the old OS operational. You would run Easy Transfer on the existing install of the old OS, it would copy the files, you would then upgrade, run the Easy Transfer again, and it would pull the data.

Since you've already upgraded, it would be easiest to simply copy/paste the files from the old OS.

Hi community, let me first explain how I assume the switch between headphones and speakers should work:I turn on music or anything esle and if no headphones are plugged in, every sound comes from the internal speakers. Now if I plug in headphones then the sound comes exclusively from the headphones. If I pull then out again the sound comes from the speakers and so on. In my case the situation is the following:If I have no headphones plugged in and turn on music, then I hear if via speakers. If I decide to continue listening to that music via headphones and plug them in, then the music continues to come from the speakers, but for example the notification sound from outlook comes from the headphones. This works vice versa. If I open, say youtube to watch a video, while having the headphones plugged in, I will hear the sound via them. If I now unplugg them, the speakers will stay silent. What can I do that if there are no external speakers plugged in (headphones etc.) every sound will be played by the internal speakers, if I plug in some sort of external speaker it comes from them and if I unplugg it it switches back to the internal speakers?Thank you very much for your help!Best regards

Hello forum, The HDD on my T440 failed within 3 months of light use, and unfortunately Lenovo only sent me a refurbished HDD. Since, this refurbished HDD has only a 3-month warranty, I decided to upgrade to an SSD and I just bought a Samsung 850 Evo 500 GB SSD. One big mistake I made was that I did not have any backup and lost all my data. Lenovo is kind enough to send me 3 recovery discs and I am planning to perform a fresh install on the SSD.  Since I never performed an HDD replacement, I have some questions and hope I will get some answers: 1. What size screwdriver should I buy to open the base cover of my T440? Do I need a different sized screwdriver to remove the HDD? 2. My T440 also came with a 16 GB caching SSD. Can I just remove it without worrying about any issues? 3. SInce I will be using the recovery discs sent by Lenovo, I will be connecting to an external DVD burner and use the recovery discs in order suggested by Lenovo. Accordingly, the first 2 discs would be "Applications and Drovers Recovery and the final disc would be the OS, which is Windows 7 professional. Before I start using recovery media, I will restart laptop-----> Enter BIOS-----> Enable AHCI----->Change system to "Boot from DVD Drive" 1st------>Save new BIOS settings and Exit. Is this the right way of doing this? 4. Finally, I heard that I have to make some changes like disabling defragmentation, etc after installing the SSD. Can I just u... Read more

Answer:T440 - Fresh install on SSD Questions

Regarding your queries:JIS cross #1 and #0 are usually all you need with a Thinkpad. You should only need to remove this if it is no longer desired. I don't know about the T440, but other Thinkpad recovery disks did not have separate Windows media.  You do not need to change the save the Boot from DVD in the BIOS.  You should only need to temoporarily change the boot device on startup.Windows 7 should detect the SSD and operate accordingly.  It doesn't hurt to check, though.  I have no idea bout the Samsung Magician.  Just check it manually.  ---m_a_s

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad T440 and the batteries are showing battery error in the Power Manager. I am unable to update my BIOS to see if that will solve it and my batteries don't seem to be eligible for a Firmware update. My Warranty is also expired. Anyone have any suggestions? error is showing up on both batteries  (Front internal and rear removable). Laptop works fine when plugged in but will not power on if it does not have a charger connected. Batteries don't charge at all (With or without it being powered on) All suggestions welcome. Would prefer not to have to get a new battery set as these ones are relatively new and shouldn't be throwing this error. I do not have a spare Thinkpad I can test the batteries in or that I can test a known good battery from.

Answer:T440 external battery not charging

Hi Valdemar_d,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per the query we understood that you are facing the issue with External battery not charging on your ThinkPad T440.

The problem you are running into is Power Manager conflicting with the 80% BIOS threshold.  So to avoid this, either keeps the Power Manager threshold for both batteries below 80%, or else both batteries above 80%.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,
Hemanth Kumar

Hi all, recently I bought Lenovo t440. How long should last battery (s) in this laptop in normal or power saving use with screen at 65-80 %? I know this laptop have two batteries , and both of them are 3 cell right ? Extended battery have 6 cell, which I don't have, but might I would  buy it . I noticed my both batteries last max 3,5 hours max 4. This is from I what know - slightly short.  Before I buy some of this batteries I would like to know which one is maybe fault, or worst of them. Maybe is faulty inside battery, maybe plug in one.  My battery indicator in win 8.1 shows both bAtteries ... It seems windows recognize capacity or remaining storage from both of batteries in same time,or, should I say, it seems my laptop is running on power from both of them in real time... Maybe laptop should drain batteries one by one ? Ok, if this is normal, let's skip it     main question is still, how to check each batterie health / or one by one in mY T440  to see which one is maybe faulty or less good, for potential replacement ?   thank you all

Hi, recently i bought from ebay an thinkpad t440 20B7-S0FV11 i5 4300u with 8Gb of RAM and 500Gb hdd. This laptop came without front battery (internal), it just came with the external one so i bought one internal battery on the internet and put it myself on my laptop.I press the reset button on the button of the laptop and turn it on.The issue is that windows (and also ubuntu) didn't recognize the battery. Windows say: "battery not detected"!I already update BIOS and everything and the battery still not detected.Initially, i thought that the battery was damaged but i charged it directly from the external battery, plug it inside of my laptop and turn it on. The laptop still not recognized the battery (and did not charge it neither), and windows says: Battery not detected! But the laptop work without external battery and charger, just with internal battery! (despite that not charging or detected) So i thought that the lithium cells are probably ok.I want to know if it's a battery problem, some lenovo firmware on battery (since battery came from china) or some problem with laptop!Thank you all.(sorry for my english)

Hello The subject of this message says it all. When I want to start my T440 without AC power, it happens quite often that the machine will not start at all - no lights, nothing. In such a case I am forced to plug in AC power just for 1 second, hit the power button and then my T440 will start. Sometimes it starts without AC power, but then again sometimes it does not. it seems random. Note: I am not talking about resuming from hibernation or etc, I am talking about a new, fresh start.I searched the internet in detail for a solution, but no result to my problem. Of course I read from other users having problems starting up their T440, but never exactly the same problem. My battery lasts for a couple of hours.  What to do? I am in Myanmar, far away from support. I tried many things already, including taking batteries out, start, turn off, start again.... Many thanks for your help.

Hi there,  I have recently acquired an T440 [Type 20b6] and everything was working fine until I upgraded to Windows 10 Pro (Three days ago). I initially had some issues which I resolved, however I am unable to resolve the issue with "Battery 1" not charging. It is staying at "0% and not charging". I have tried the following; - Upgrading the Lenovo Power Management  driver to 1.67.13.12 - Removal of the "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery" driver- Removing the battery and charging it in a Windows 7 machine (works fine) - BIOS/UEFI upgrade to GJET92WW 2.42- Removing the external battery and charging "Battery 1" on its own using Windows 10- I know the hardware is fine because it was charging under Windows 7 I'll appreciate any tips on how I can resolve this issue,  Thanks, XX00A1

Hello forum, I bought a like-new T440 last week (500 GB+16 GB, 8 GB RAM, i5) & my experience so far has not been good at all. I am a student on budget & I got it to replace my failing 5-yr old atom powered netbook. I don't really care about other widely reported problems with this model like the button-less keypad. But the 1600x900 TN screen is so bad when compared to my old netbook's screen that I can't believe how Lenovo got away by putting this screen in an ultrabook.  There are other issues that have been bugging me and I need some help: 1. Hi allI've got my first request to upgrade the RAM in a ThinkPad T440. I haven't got my hands on it yet, so cant do this for myself physically but can anyone comment on the upgrade path? The reason I ask is because I've looked up the model on the Kingston memory selector and it only offers an SDXC card and says this is the only available slot.  Surely not? http://www.kingston.com/en/memory/search?DeviceType=3&Mfr=LEN&Line=ThinkPad&Model=87133 Can anyone confirm there is a free SODIMM slot? Thanks

Question: T440 upgrade RAM

Hello there!Let me start saying that I am quite ignorant when it's about computers, so please try to be as clear as possible   I have a T440 i5-4300, 4GB RAM. I'd like to upgrade my RAM because sometimes when I work on my music, the machine is quite slow. Therefore my questions are:- How much RAM can my computer have maximum?- How many slots does it have? And therefore shall I install my new RAM next to my old one or completely replace my old one?- Could you please tell me EXACTLY what RAM models are compatible with my machine? So..what should I buy? I really really REALLY appreciate your help. Thanks,Tiz

Answer:T440 upgrade RAM

Your PC takes this spec for RAM: PC3-12800 DDR3L DRAM 1600MHz SODIMM The "L" means "low voltage", 1.35volts.  The device has 4GB soldered on the board.  You can add 8 GB more in a single module.  Read your User Guide or Hardware Maintenance Manual for how to do it.  Search support for those docs.  That spec is an industry standard, so any of the major players will have it.  You might check out the Crucial Memory Finder to confirm that for yourself.

There have been a few posts on Monitor issues - But I think I can shed some light... Hardware:Updated Ultra Dock Severial T440 and T440s (win 8.1)3 External Monitors (VGA, DVI, DisplayPort)1 USB monitor If I leave the unit for a bit, it goes to sleep / screen saver (even tho disabled in windows) - When I wake it, ONLY my USB monitor comes up.  If I don't have the USB monitor on, the issues looks like my machine has hung. Since I have USB I can load the monitor settings (Windows)  - and for each Monitor on the dock, in the pull down beside 'Multiple Displays:' I get 'disabled'.   If I flick each one back to extend, the monitors all come back on.  Now after being in the dock - when I go to power up standalone, the internal monitor turns off,  I need to Hard reset to get it back on (Hold Power button). I will test taking it out of dock and plugging in the USB monitor to see if that makes a difference.

I pulled my unit out of the dock - powered up and the display goes blank (if you look carefully you can see the bios boot screen, then black, then you can see the backlight turn off. I plugged in the USB monitor and boom - I could log in. Once Logged in I could see that windows still thinks it has some of the monitors from the dock, and the internal display is set to disable. So the issue is the detection / setup of monitors in/out of the dock. I've done about all I can do for dubugging, I hope lenovo can pick up from here. if not I'll have to call lenovo support.

Hello all, So a little while ago I upgraded the RAM in this T440 with a 8GB stick. Everything was working fine. I had all 12GB working perfectly. At some point in the last three weeks I noticed that the laptop was running slow with Chrome and Photoshop open. Couldn't figure out what was going on. A couple days later I needed to check the Computer properties and noticed it said 4GB of RAM installed. Popped out the stick, booted it up with the on-board 4GB and it started up. Popped it back in and it still boots but still only sees the on-board memory. Check the BIOS and it only sees the on-board memory. I would think that it would not POST properly if it couldn't use the RAM that was installed. Is there something wrong here? I literally just went to Best Buy and picked up a stick. I'm guessing I need a particular RAM stick?

My T440 after an upgrade to W10 and the demolition of the old W7 install and removal of the "Lenovo" Q-partition has had some random errors and a non-functional "TrackPad and associated functions. The W10 it seems has a very convenient recovery/restore to new/clean with removal of all data etc. It seems it's possibly one of the better features of W10. Once restored/recovered and connected to the Internet activation is "automatic". The recovery/restore though of course removes all of the associated Lenovo features and software that were part of the purchase. Can a W8/8.1 Recovery Media disc be used to access maybe the "SWTOOLS" to recover the associated software and Lenovo features? Can one pick and choose from that disc only the software desired if it was associated with the particular "TYPE"? I believe the Restore Media is maybe 3 supplemental discs as well as the 2 operating system discs. This particular machine is a 20B7-S1KJ00 I've absolutely no experience with anything newer than the T400 and the X201. My trusty ole T60P is still rolling along but now with a LinuxMint build.

Answer:T440 -W10 "restore" after upgrade

I'm not in the habit of "bumping posts" but it seems to me that maybe recovering significant useful software from the "RESTORE MEDIA" might be quite valuable to anyone who's done a W10 upgrade. If possible it seems that once a person was happy with a W10 upgrade they could then use the W10 restore/rebuild function which seems to create a "very clean" install recovering substantial HDD/SSD space that's taken up customarily with the Lenovo partition and the windows old aspect of the upgrade. Maybe I'm just missing something here. Anyone care to explain?

Hoping this problem will be noticed by more people, the original post on this issue came from:https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Linux-Discussion/T470-Linux-Power-Bridge-wrong-discharge-order/td-p/365...https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/63odjr/t470_battery_order_question_internal_discharges/ Brief description: same problem with OS including Win 10, Ubuntu 16.04, Gentoo etc. The internal battery always gets discharged first regardless its remaining power, which is generally harmless but seems not so good for the internal battery life. With my own T470 machine, updated with the latest 1.29 BIOS, this problem remains. According to searching results online, this little bug came with early versions of X's and T' including T460. PS: this issue had been successfully fixed with T460 via BIOS update 1.26, hoping it would be fixed with T470 sooner or later. Best regards.

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per the query we understood that you are willing to upgrade system memory and M.2.NGFF SSD for your ThinkPad T440.

You can upgrade the RAM and M.2.NGFF SSD for your system, but you have to be cautious while replacing the hardware, because if you create any physical damage to the system then it won?t cover the warranty.

You can use this link to know about how to replace FRU parts for ThinkPad T440.

After a round of Windows updates, I went to turn on my laptop and recieved the "Primary internal battery (601)" error.  After this screen, however, Windows would not load.  I have tried taking the battery out and 'draining the charge',  and starting up the computer plugged directly to AC with no battery.  Windows still does not load.  The start-up test in the diagnostics menu said the battery needed calibration, however when I go to run the battery test, it gets to "waiting for battery to charge" and exits out of the test without giving me any results at all.  Currently when turning on the computer I no longer get the "primary internal battery" error, it just goes directly to a black screen with blinking cursor.  Any help is appreciated, I'm completely at a loss here!

Similar to why some people don't like to charge laptop batteries to 100% and in line with preserving battery life, I also rarely let my laptop batteries hit a rock bottom 0%. By default the laptop was set to hibernate if the battery reached 5 or 6% but I raised this lower limit to 10%. (i.e. auto-hibernate at 10%) I heard the reasons why it is bad to let batteries completely drain to 0. Main one being something to do with the battery cells falling into a "deep slumber" and simply not waking up unless you send the laptop in for a "shock treatment". Like the "gate" at the entrance to the battery cells don't even have enough energy themselves to even open the "gate" to allow energy to go into the cell itself. Anyway, is there a way to stop the slice battery from reaching 0%? So that once the slice battery goes down to 10%, for example, the laptop will switch over to use the main internal battery?

Solved!

Answer:laptop allows 39+ slice battery to reach 0% before switching to use internal battery.

There is not currently any way to do what you request.  But draining the battery to 0% isn't really 0% capacity of the battery. The 100% charge of the battery is normally 4.2 volts. The 0% charge state is really 3.0 volts. So when the battery reports 0% it is not really zero volts because the cell must be kept at higher state of charge for the health of the battery. The battery firmware is intelligent enough not to let the battery discharge to a point where the battery health is impacted.

I recently received my 39+ slice battery and, after attaching it to the x1, set the charge thresholds for both internal and slice batteries to stop at 90%. (I used this threshold on the internal battery and hoped to set up the slice battery to 90% also.) i.e. start charging when below 86% and stop at 90%. Unfortunately I have been unable to maintain both batteries at 90% charge. After extensive testing, updating drivers, software, firmware, bios, resetting battery meter and various charge threshold combinations, etc., it seems that the slice battery won't charge past 80% unless the internal battery is allowed to charge to 100%. If I set both batteries to charge until full (100%), this happens:1. internal battery charges to 80%, then stops.2. laptop switches to slice battery. charges slice battery to 80%, then stops.3. laptop switches back to internal battery and continues charging it to the 100% threshold.4. finally laptop switches back to slice battery and finishes charging it to 100% also. However, if I set both batteries charge threshold to stop at 90%, this happens:1. internal battery charges to 80%, stops.2. slice battery charges to 80%, stops.3. internal battery starts charging again until it reaches the 90% that i set, stops again.4. and then, that's it....lol.. The slice battery does not continue to charge until 90%. it just gets stuck at 80%. My X1 is about a month and a half old: 1. Battery life on a charge appears to be a little under 3 hours without changing the settings it came with. I know there are setting to maximize the time on one charge but for normal factory settings is this time normal? 2. When I check battery Power and Performance it states that the battery is at 85% of its original capacity. To lose so much capacity in just a month and a half seems odd. Is this normal or can this measure vary? All in all I am having a very positive experience with this computer however I am a little concerned with these power readings I am getting. Thanks in advance.

Answer:X1 Battery Life on a charge and Battery Health Questions

hey bbfolgart,1 - since you did not change any setting, the hours of usage in my opinion is about right; though this also depends on the battery you are using as well as other factors such as screen brightness; application that you're using, if the wireless is on, etc. all of this plays a role on the how much power is left for the battery.2. battery going down to 85% capacity is weird. for this try doing a battery gauge reset from the Power Manager. At the same time, do fully charge the battery and then use your unit without the AC adapter until the battery fully discharges.Recharge the battery and do not use it at this time. Once fully charge, use it again without adapter and see how long the battery last and check the capacity as well.while you do all of this, do check on http://support.lenovo.com if there is any updates for the Power Manager software that you are using and update if applicable.

Once I tried to hoo up the front USB ports on my case by connecting to the internal USB connections on the mother board. All I got was lock ups and errors when I tried to use USB divices. I gave up and got a hub that connects to one of the USB port on the back. No problems.
Now. I'm looking for an internal Compact Flash card reader and they use the internal USB connections to function. They also require Win 98 second edition.
So I'm thinkin'. Do I need second edition to take advantage of my internal USB connections in the first place?
Just wondering.

Answer:Internal USB questions

Hi- Possibly, best answer I could give....a lot depends on the system itself. If USB hardware is present, the USB function depends on what operating system you use....and win98se is a bit better at most things. There are downloads that may help if you are using win98First Ed., from Microsoft or the computer manufacturer or the chipset manufacturer....like Intel, Opti, Ali, SiS, VIA----would have to know which chipset you have, or better yet, the motherboard make and model, computer make and model....there are ways to get the motherboard ID if you dont know it.
USB function could be turned off in the BIOS, too- but we can help you find out. Do you know how to find the Device Manager? If so, check for USB Controllers- down at bottom of the list, click the +sign next to USB....note what it says, any yellow ! marks there? Or are you missing the USB entry?
If you download the Belarc Advisor, a small free tool we use to help you find info on your system, you can see a good listing of the hardware and software on your computer. It would ID the chipset, many other things, of most all systems. Just download it to your desktop, run the downloaded file, it puts an icon on desktop, to use the program, double click the Belarc Icon....

Answer:Which Internal HD Questions, Please ?

You are WAY over-analyzing the decision. If you have an SATA cable already, the bare drive is fine. If not, you can still get the bare drive and just add to your shopping cart an SATA cable. Those are always good to have sitting around.

A bare drive typically means it is just the drive and nothing else. That's what most of us buy. You don't need any tools or discs to go with it. Since your computer already had an SATA drive, it should have the cable and proper power connector. For only $30, you could double your space. I'd go that route, but check the warranties on both drives.

As for the sectors, just let Windows use it's default. There's no need to worry about this on a desktop computer.

I need to replace the WD Caviar 60GB EIDE HD from my COMPAQ Presario desktop PC, Model 5003 US. The failed drive is dated 13FEb2001. This is a 5400 RPM drive, with 2MB buffer and a max data rate of 100MB although some versions of the same model are lower data rates per the WD spec sheet.

Do i need to replace this with an exact duplicate or can I install the drives advertised as 7200RPM and/or 8MB buffer?

Also, I may decide to install two internal HD drives to separate the OS from data. The COMPAQ manual says the existing data cable must be replaced when installing a slave drive, although it includes a second plug for a spare drive. Is the COMPAQ statement valid and what type of replacement cable would be required? Where are they available?

Any advice and suggestions greatly appreciated.

Hi. So, I'm thinking about formatting my HD since I've had my PC for 1 year know, and have never done anything like that before, although my computer has been acting all strange after I got viruses. It goes like this, I got the viruses, Trojans and malwares, but I managed to remove them all (at least I think so). But even after removing them, my PC has become slower and a bit weird. A sign of that weirdness is, among others, the fact that I cannot enter a new user I have created after the infection. Other thing is, after I removed the viruses with AVG, Malwarebytes and Windows Security, I had to restart the pc, standard stuff so far, but after I restarted it, the desktop appeared to be the default one, It also reset all my game setting and preferences, and even deleted some programs, which led me to believe that the viruses have messed up my root files or something. So I'm thinking about formatting my HD, as I expect it will make things be as they were before. Will it really solve my problem, or will it just be a waste of time? Thanks in advance.

Ps: Sorry for my english, I'm actually brazilian :P

Dear all, I have been using 3 external monitors on DISPLAY PORTs since I purchased the W540.Recently, I tried to install a game but it seems like the Nvida adapter is not getting used. I guess all 3 monitors are usning the Intel HD 4600 adapter. Hence the game won't play properly. Is there a way to switch to the Nvidia? My second question is my W540 has 1080 screen on it currently. If I get a 3K screen, is it plug and play if I just swap with the current screen? thank you,Jack

Answer:W540 Video Adapter questions and screen upgrade questions

1) Right-click the game shortcut > Run with graphics processor > High performance NVIDIA. If this works, set a rule for it in NVIDIA Control Panel > Manage 3D Settings > Program Settings.2) Guessing, but it should work if you get exactly the right 3K panel. Some eBay sellers will sell "compatible" panels which may not work 100% (no brightness control, upside down video, etc.).You'll also void your warranty replacing the LCD yourself.

Hi

My computer needs relieving of several months build up of internal dust.

I have 2 questions:-

1] I've bought an air-duster can from a computer supplies shop. However I notice that as well as 'clean' blasts of air, the can also occasionally expels an icy cold substance which leaves an initial white residue wherever it settles [which slowly fades]. This usually happens when the can is tilted so I try to keep it straight, but it is very difficult to avoid tilting just a bit while working.

What is this substance - can it be harmful to my computer parts, such as the exposed circuit boards [which are dusty and need attention]?

I'm assuming it's something to do with the gas that powers the air-duster, and I have noticed this with every can I have used over the years so this is not just a faulty one - but is this substance safe to land on my computer components?

2] Rather than using an air-duster to 'blow around' the dust, I would much rather 'suck it out' completely - i.e. using a vaccuum cleaner. However I was warned a while ago that this might be dangerous to my computer [for reasons to do with electricity or static, I can't really remember].

This is the setup: my computer is fully disconnected and open on a table, I plug in and switch on my vaccuum cleaner and carefully point the plastic sucking nozzle towards the various computer innards. I do not touch any innards, carefully staying a few inches away ... Read more

I do not touch a... Read more

I am pretty new to computer hardware and im trying to build a computer lol but I wanted to know for best possible performance on a gaming rig..should I be looking at a single big hard drive or multiple smaller hard drives?

Answer:Internal Hard Drive Questions

Get a pair of Western Digital Raptors and set them up for RAID0. Do a goole search on it! Basically what raptors are are super fast harddrives. Most hard drives spin at 7200 Rpms. Raptors spin at 10000 rpms. Now, RAID0 is a configuration that allows for half of the information on your harddrives to be stored on one harddrive, and half on the other. This way your computer can retrieve data twice as fast. Mixed in with an already faster spinning harddrive, youve got yourself the fastest data retrieval system you can buy!!!

Hello ? I have a question about External and Internal HardDrives.
I want to buy Hard Drive because I want my computer Run Fast.
Currently I have a hard drive : "wdcwd800jb-00jjc0"
I am using "19.25GB" I think it is slow.

The question is, Can I replace the hard drive that I already have and use external harddrive as "Main Drive" ?

My concern is which hard drive run fast.
And tell me what is different (or Ideal) between External and Internal Hard drive.
Should I buy Internal or External hard drive ?

Answer:Questions about External and Internal HardDrives.

Re:

Hey Neowing,

Harddrive size isn't the only factor in determining how fast/slow your computer runs. Atleast 90% depends on your CPU type/Speed and the Ammount of RAM you are running.

Ideally, it is recommened that on the hardrive that your OS is stored on (Windows XP or wateva you are running) you have atleast 10% space free.

Yes, if you have a 19.25GB hard drive where your OS is installed, and you have alot of files etc on there, it would be running slow.. Especially if you have an older, slower hard drive such as an ATA or IDE disk.

The main difference between internal and external hard drives is the conveniance. An internal hard drive is obviously not as easy to take out and move around as an external. External Hard Drives are much more expensive (Sometimes up to 4 or 5X the price of an internal of the equivalant size!)
Most external Hard Drives connect via USB 2.0, so before you even think of buying one, you should make sure your computer supports USB.

Now, on the topic of using an external as a primary HDD, I have never heard of anyone doing that. I could be wrong, but I don't think it is possible. However, even IF it was possible, I would STRONGLY not-recommend it.
External hard drives connect via USB 2.0, so your data access/bootup etc would be EXTREMELY slow! You think your computer is running slow now? If you had everything (including your entire operating system!) loading from a USB external hardisk, you would truly understand slow!

I have an older Compaq desktop - model #6016US. It has five bays that are currently filled as followsDVD/RWCD/RW3.5" floppy drive60GB HDD20GB HDDMy question is can I take the floppy drive out and put another HDD in it? Would I use the same cable that the floppy is currently connected to?Thanks!

Answer:Internal hard drive questions

A floppy cable only works on a floppy drive.Although you may have an open bay you are out of IDE connections on that machine with 4 devices. You can either add a PCI controller card that will add 2 more IDE slots and/or check to see if your MBoard has any SATA connections...if it does you can add a SATA HDD.

This is a Linksys WRT54G
Someone I know got a new router. This is the new model of it. The Linksys WRT54G2

The new model doesn't have antennas. I guess it has an internal antenna. My question is how can it work like that. And shouldn't the new model work not as good without the external antennas?

Answer:Internal antenna questions. Linksys router.

Nope. It will probably have the same coverage as the old router (actually, probably better).

You didn't actually think that long plastic stick coming out of the old router was actually all antenna, did you?

I have a Thinkpad t440s running windows 7. The internal battery won't charge beyond 80% and the removable battery won't charge at all.  I've read other threads here and have tried uninstalling the Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery using device manager but this has not fixed the issue. Any other ideas?

Answer:Thinkpad T440s internal battery won't charge beyond 80% and external battery won't charge at all

Hi Nicktr,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

I think the problem you are running into is Power Manager conflicting with the 80% BIOS threshold. So to avoid this, either keeps the Power Manager threshold for both batteries below 80%, or else both batteries above 80%.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,
Hemanth Kumar

Question: internal battery

I am trying to replace the internal battery in an old P486. The only info I have on the motherboard is, MB-65-P486-BI0t. I can not find the battery to replace it. The motherboard appears to be manufactured in 1996. Can any one help. The closest thing I have found to a battery is a 2 in oblong plug in that has "green pc function" written on the top.

Answer:internal battery

Hi Becky, welcome to TSG.

Have a look here to see if we can't ID your motherboard...I can't find anything with that number.

Answer:internal battery 601

Hi, Just to clarify, the 601 error relates to your notebooks main battery ( not the rtc cell on the system board ). If you're happy with running the machine on mains power full time, there's no issue with that and you can simply remove the battery. If you do want to replace the battery at some time, you can order a new one through HP Parts Store or ( and often less expensive ), just google the full Model No. of your dv7 series notebook including the term battery. Regards, DP-K

Question: Internal battery

I have an old (1996?) Amstrad with windows `95
I now have a new computer and would like to give the old one to my daughter,but....
Does anybody please know where the internal battery is situated? My screen was telling me to change it. I have it in pieces on the floor and I still can`t see it! Help.

Answer:Internal battery

It will be somewhere on the motherboard. It's a flat round battery like those in a watch only larger. On some older PCs, the battery is soldered to the motherboard so you may need to take it to a shop to have it replaced if that's the case.

Okay, so I've been having a few programs with my computer...this including slowness, poor wifi connections, and odd performance of wacom tablets.

The problems with a tablet are described in more detail here--> http://www.sevenforums.com/drivers/1...ml#post1658350

Recently, before I signed into windows, a message on a black screen popped up stating something about my internal battery needing to be replaced. I'm on an HP pavilion laptop // HP pavilion entertainment PC.

Could the problems I mentioned above be related to the battery? I desperately need to be able to use my tablets for my major in college, and are majorly concerned with how they've been acting poorly with my laptop...could just replacing the battery work?

Also, would the 'internal battery' still be the battery that is capable of being removed from the laptop? Or does a laptop of two batteries?

Answer:"Internal battery" notices..what problems could a low battery cause?

This is the CMOS battery it is talking about. It should be replaced asap. But this is not a do it yourself job in a laptop. Better have some expert deal with it.

I have received the dreaded 601 error before my start-up process.  I ran the battery check through the operating systems' diagnostics (F2) and it said it would need replaced due to use over time.  I also ran the battery charge check through HP Support Assistant and it said that it was very weak and possibly needed replaced.   How do I replace my internal battery?  The website that HP Support Assistant took me to only had the external batteries available.

Answer:Internal Battery Error (601)

Can we have your full model number? I think the error you are seeing refers to the "main", large battery and not the little clock or CMOS battery. Is your system closed so that the battery is not easily removeable? The full model number will point us to the right service manual which will show the part you need and the replacement process. Also need to know what country you live in.  http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=emr_na-c00033108

Hi all, I have a question regarding internal battery care. I have seen other people pointing to posts on battery care but unfortunately they pertain to removable batteries. Question is, what is the best way to take care of an internal battery? I mainly work at my desk with the computer plugged in, Before, I would remove the battery. Now that the battery is internal, I can not. Do I leave it plug the entire time? Or should I unplug it once the battery is fully charged? Thanks!

Answer:Internal Battery Care

Callisto,

Batteries have come quite a ways over the years. There shouldn't be any problems leaving the battery plugged in all the time, there are certain features included with systems now that help keep the battery working to it's maximum potential.

I am a IT tech at my company, we are a Lenovo shop. We recently purchased several x240's and when I get them I have to add memory to them. I noticed when I opened this last one up it had an additional battery inside. After I put it back together I tried to power it by that battery but it wouldnt start. However I plugged in the traditional battery and it started. Can you tell me the reason for the additional battery and how that works? Also as a side note, there is an issue with the internal cache card. I found that upon trying to image the laptop with our company image, it will not see the current hard drive if the cache card is added to the laptop as an option. It will only see the 14.9gb cache card as the main hard drive. The cache card has to be disabled and is on the side of the motherboard that you cannot see by removing the bottom for the image to install properly, which by the way will void your warranty if you do it yourself. Also the cache card is not HIPAA complient which is something we have to observe at my company.

Answer:X240 Internal Battery

Internal built-in battery starts when external one is disabled or absent as well as the AC adapter. One of the reason built-in battery allows replacement the external battery when that's fully discharged or for the management purpose while laptop is working w/o AC adapter. Also the laptop has a less weight with built-in battery only.Note you have to disable built-in battery before you perform any servicing laptop built-in parts - RAM sticks, disk drives, wlan/wwan adapters etc... Do it in the BIOS Setup menu. For more details read laptop User Guide.
