I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hey.

I recently tried to install Windows 7 on my computer. I already had it and it's a custom built computer, however I wanted to try to move Windows 7 over to my SSD however I got issues and I couldn't wipe the disks. In my BIOS I set the WDC (not sure if t's the SSD or the HDD) to the first boot priority, then ASUS CD/DVD. I ran the installation, or well to the point where you could choose what disk to install it on. Couldn't install it on any as they weren't wiped. Tried to turn off the computer and start it up again in order to access the computer, log onto W7 and format the disks. But what came up was "Reboot and Select proper Boot device or insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key". My Windows 7 disc is still in, however nothing happens. I can't press any key as my KEYBOARD IS NOT BEING DETECTED. Which is an abnormal issue, been searching around for hours now. How do I fix this? I've checked the wires, doesn't seem to be anything there. It's weird as I haven't touched any of the components, just restarted the computer and this is what came up.

Hi,

Pls help me. I didn't shut down properly a few days ago and my pc refused to boot since.when I switch it on it will go to a screen that tells me to press TAB to continue to POST or DEL to go to BIOS. After POST, it gets stuck on a screen that says:

"The last attempt to boot the system from its previous location failed. Attempt to restart again?

Delete restoration data and proceed to system boot menu

Continue with system restart"

Unfortunately when it gets to this stage, my keyboard stops working and I cannot select any of the options above. I can access bios, f11, shift f10 but I cannot access f8 no matter how many times I press it. It always goes back to the "last attempt to boot ..." screen.
I tried using a boot disk and it goes on to say press any key to continue booting from cd. But when I press a key, it goes back to the "The last attempt to boot..." screen again. I don't know what else to do.

Thanks in advance

Roni

Hi!

Okay, so I know so little about tech that I'm not even sure this is a hardware question, but it seems most likely. Basically, I know there's a button on the keyboard of most PCs that stops the keys (or maybe just the mouse?) from working. I only know this because I did it by accident once and freaked out because I thought I broke my new laptop. I want to do it now because I work a lot on small tables, and its useful to be able to highlight over my keys without pressing them all.

I thought it was that button that resembles a rectangle with two small rectangles, like a diagram of a computer mouse, except it has a line over it like a stop sign. On my keyboard, it's over F6. Only when I press it, and when I hold it down, nothing at all happens.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks guys!!!

Ihave a Satellite L50-B-2FN, bought only five months ago (2 Feb 2016),and aside from an ongoing problem with the lid not closing properly Inow have a hardware issue: the keyboard has stopped functioningfully, with most of the number keys unresponsive as well as theletters R and Y.

Ihave checked the keyboard and drivers setup through Device Manager, and the machine tells me everything is working properly and updated, but this is clearly not the case. I tried Toshiba's own onlinerecommendations: uninstalling the keyboard(http://support.toshiba.com/support/t...=COMPUTERS)and a system restore to the last automatic(http://forums.toshiba.com/t5/System-...-p/657989),but neither have resolved the problem.

Fromwhat I understand from online forums, keyboard issues like thi are a_very_ common problem on Toshiba Satellites, especially those running(or updating to) Windows 10 (mine came with Windows 10 alreadyinstalled). There does not, however, seem to be a clear or consistentsolution. Can anyone help? Apparently the warranty on this device(serial number, part number) expired on 1 Dec 2015, so even though Ionly bought it from the store on 2 Feb 2016, it isn'tcovered--otherwise I would be requesting a replacement, especiallygiven the problem with the lid not closing properly too....

Hello, I am hoping someone could help me with this issue. I am not sure if I am posting in the right section of the forum so forgive me if i am not. I am using a compaq laptop with windows 7 for an OS. The G, H, 8, and backspace keys decided to stop working. For some reason the only way to get any of those buttons to work is if you put on CAPS lock and hold shift. Then you can use those keys. Im not sure if any other keys have been affected as of yet. Ive tried to google for a solution, which normally helps me fix any computer issues I come accross. So far I can only find the reccomendation to hold the function button and press numlock, and its supposed to remove the, "sticky keys." I am not quite sure what exactly the sticky keys are but I didnt think it was the problem here, and the laptop doesnt seem to have a function button anyways. I have seen the option to turn on sticky keys when holding shift on other computers or tapping shift 8 times, I dont know if it was turned on or if sticky keys cause certain keys to not work unless you hold shift while CAPS lock is on, but if this sounds like something you can help with please advise me of any suggestions. I appreciate any time you take to help or even if youve read this far. Thank you

Answer:Certain keyboard keys not working unless you press caps lock and hold shift?

First thing you do is get a canned air and clean out the keyboard... slowly, carefully, then do it again with the laptop upside down. That rules out the most common cause... dirt, dust, and debris.

I upgraded from Windows 8.1 (and I never had this problem), to Windows 10 and I noticing that my keyboard would stop responding in windows explorer, calculator, search, etc. The keyboard had no issues working in a browser like Chrome, but it wouldn't respond in something like Adobe Premiere Pro.

To clarify - the keyboard works fine initially when I restart my computer. And then randomly, it decides not to work in explorer. That's when I start testing various applications to see if it works. What I found was that Adobe CC programs, windows explorer and anything native to Windows (programs such as calculator, search, etc.) doesn't respond to keyboard inputs.

But it gets more confusing - my keyboard still works fine. For example, if I hold down, ctrl+shift+esc, Task Manager does show up. If I hit the calculator shortcut on my keyboard, calculator does come. If I toggle Caps Lock, the little notification appears on my screen telling me that Caps Lock is on or off.

Within Chrome, the biggest issue I found was if I use the period in the numeric keypad side, it acts as "delete" instead of a period, whereas the numbers all work perfectly (hitting '1' gives me '1', not 'end').

I'm at wits end because I even clean installed Windows 10, in case of an bug during the upgrade, and I'm experiencing the exact same thing. Drivers were the latest from Logitech's site, but the still am using the old unifying receiver (if that makes a difference).

Hi
For some reason I can not choose between the different user profiles that I have in my windows XP when I start my computer.
My keyboard (ps2) does not respond when I press the up or down key. (I've already tried with Num lock and the 8-key)

It works though fine before (Bios) and after that (windows)

Any idea why? :confused

(What I am doing: I am trying to get a little more power from my computer for gaming.
I've been following Blackvipers guide for making different profiles at startup.
Everything went all rigth and I got an extra profile for gaming where many services for windows xp are disabled. The problem is that my keyboard does not let me choose between them)

Hard Drive 320.0 GB - Serial ATA-150 - 5400.0 rpm
Operating System Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit Edition

When turning on the laptop, the only thing that boots up is either the Insyde H20 setup utility, or a black screen that tells me if I want to boot windows 7 by pressing enter. Thing is, pressing enter or anything doesn't work, nor does the keyboard work on the set up utility.

I even tried connecting a usb keyboard to it, but still nothing.

I took out the battery for a half an hour, didn't help either.

Anyone have a clue on what's wrong with it?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

I have just recently built a new PC which seemed to be running fine but after installing a few games and drivers for a wireless keyboard and mouse I found that on the next boot up the keyboard and mouse would not respond.

I then tried to use my old wired keyboard and mouse to see if that would work but this wasn't getting recognized either, after a few re-boots the wired keyboard and mouse worked but has left me wondering what has caused this to happen.

Is there a common cause for the mouse and keyboard to just not respond?

Finally, for no reason what so ever Windows XP is now asking me to enter a password every time I boot up the PC.

Is there away to remove it?

and

Why would it just start coming up?

Thanks

I have a machine that I'm trying to install windows 7 on to. However, it won't let me boot from CD due to what appears to be a keyboard problem.

I can enter boot menu and BIOS fine and navigate BIOS. I can't however, navigate the boot menu - the keyboard doesn't respond. Meaning that when the 'Press any key to boot from CD' prompt displays, I'm unable to enter windows setup and it continues on booting from the OS.

The same problem occurs with another USB keyboard on the same machine.
The machine only has 1 SATA hdd plugged in presently ( windows ).
I've tried resetting BIOS to defaults without success.

What's odd is that the keyboard works for everything other than the boot menu and the 'press any key to boot from cd' prompt.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:New Win7 Compaq USB keyboard not working

I'm not sure exactly what you are asking or doing as there appears to be mixed terms, but here are a few pointers that might help if what I think I am reading is correct. Otherwise post back clearer details.Your USB Keyboard and USB mouse should be plugged into rear USB ports directly on your motherboard. They should not be plugged into a USB hub or through any other USB device that has additional USB accessory ports if you want them to work reliably. They also should be plugged in before starting your computer and left plugged in whenever your computer in turned on - they should NOT be considered hot pluggable. If this does not help, Please state: Is the computer or the keyboard 1 month old? Did the keyboard come with the computer? Did the computer come with windows 7? Have you made any changes to hardware or software? Are you up-to-date on your virus scanning software and do you scan regularly/automatically? ETC.

First time poster at the end of my rope with this issue. I recently upgraded my laptop CPU. I used a processor that Dell had tested on my specific model of laptop (N5050) and everything was fine for about 2 weeks. I used ESD protection and didn't do much actual touching of the motherboard. About a week ago the laptop did a hard shut down for no apparent reason. There was no BSOD and when my system booted it didn't prompt me to go into safe mode. However once I got to the Windows profile screen the keyboard was not responding. The HD is new, the system is about 5 and a half years old.

The keyboard works fine through POST, Windows sees it and is not displaying any errors in device manager. I got the keyboard working again by rolling back Windows to just after I installed the new CPU. However, when I let Windows update run tonight the keyboard stopped working again. I rolled Windows back and it is still not working. I have un/reinstalled the driver as well as trying several restore points. The ribbon is firmly in the port. The keyboard is still working through POST and in BIOS but as soon as the OS begins to load it is no longer active even though device manager shows it is active. My anti-virus is not finding anything and I don't use the laptop for anything that is risky for malware (no porn, torrents, opening strange e-mail attachments, etc.).

Any ideas what to try next? I really don't want to reinstall the OS.

Thanks

The typical -go to control panel and keyboard language setting- instructions dont work on Home Premium 7 for some unknown reason.

Im at a loss.

The OS seems to be in English, but the keyboard doesnt want to change to Spanish.

Recent reinstall from partition. Legit copy, came with the laptop. Was working before the reinstall OK. Iirc the default interface might have been showing spanish, which might explain why i didnt have this problem before in the keyboard.

I think I was given the option to choose language at reinstall, and that I chose English. But everyone else who-s had problems with interface language never complained about keyboard issues.

How do I tell PC to load CD at boot?

Answer:Boot from CD when Win7 can't see keyboard 'til after bootup?

It's very possible the BIOS is not seeing the keyboard but Windows can load drivers for it and work. Usually a setting in the BIOS for Legacy USB has to be Enabled but may need a PS/2 keyboard plugged in to do it.

Hi,

At my work, a new computer running windows 7 regularly freezes at the logon screen. You can't move the keyboard mouse at all. Often a reboot fixes the issue.

You can't remote desktop/VNC to it but you can ping it.

I've checked with the networking department and it is in the same place in Active Directory as the old computer.
I've checked device manager and found no uninstalled hardware.
Log Viewer shows hardly any errors just some GPO warning, nothing obvious.

Any ideas?

Have you tried a new keyboard on the PC?  It sounds like the hardware is giving you an issue, please try a known working keyboard on the PC and see if this resolved the issue.  You can also try different USB ports on the PC as well and see if this helps.

I'm trying to boot from my windows CD but my keyboard doesn't respond during the "boot from cd" screen. Is there a way around this or a fix?

Answer:"Press any key" To boot from CD, but Keyboard doesn't start untill Windows does.

im guessing you have a USB keyboard. I sudjest you go to a computer shop and get yourself a USB to Keyboard jack converter. The little purple plug in the back of the computer. You can plug your USB straight into that, and then the plug will then be converted.

Not sure how much the things cost, wouldnt be expensive though. You usually get one free when you buy a USB keyboard or mouse.

Hello all,

I have a Toshiba A300-18A laptop, bought in Portugal in 2008. It came pre-installed with Vista and I always left it in place because I couldn't find a proper time to backup everything properly. These holidays, I finally had the time to do that and 2 or 3 weeks ago I installed Win7. I didn't do an upgrade and did the custom install over the previous Vista version. Right after installation, during the first uses, my keyboard froze during an internet session. Simply, no key would work, but I had full control of the computer otherwise. Over the next days I found it happened quite frequently, and it didn't even need to be on internet. The most often place to freeze is in text editors (ConText, TexnicCenter), Excel (I'm using Office 2007), an online MMO and even the login screen, before I can actually access my computer. A restart usually solves the problem temporarily, sometimes I need two restarts in a row.

Due to this, I did a reinstall of Win7, this time formatting the C: partition where I was making the installation. So this was a real clean install and I still had the same problems. I thought it would be drivers, so I installed some drivers I downloaded from Toshiba support center and THEN I found out about Toshiba's Win7 installation helper and installed it over the drivers.

Still the same problems. There are more curious things about the keyboard: it usually seems to think ctrl is pressed. I have opened the on-screen keyboard and noticed th... Read more

My setup: Intel i5 with 4Gb Ram with Nvidia GeForce GT 610 video card, 64Gb SSD (Win7), 330 Gb hdd (Win Vista), and 1Tb hdd.
I've been running Win7/Vista for several years now, and decided to upgrade to 10 as some of the new software I want won't run on those older OS's. Windows 7 on the SSD is for gaming only, with nothing else loaded onto it that is not gaming related, not even Acrobat. Everything else uses the 2 hard drives with the older 330 Gb hdd as bootable.

So I upgraded Vista to 7 SP1, and installed Win10. Everything went beautifully once I got SP1 on it. Worked for a few days then went to play a game, booted into 7 and no mouse or keyboard control. After I selected Win7 to boot into from the boot control screen, I had no control of anything. Had to hold the power key to shutdown.

I unplugged the power to the Win10 drive and re-booted. It gave me an error about a missing device and let me press F9 to boot into Win7, after which I had control of my mouse and keyboard. So now when I want to do some gaming I have to unplug my small Hdd and go about it that way, which seems totally insane and just plain wrong to do, but I can't think of anyway to fix this as it only shows up when the small drive is connected. If I do that and boot into 10 it doesn't see anything wrong with the drivers for the other OS, and when I boot into 7 I have no control to do anything at all to fix it <sigh>.

Whats a gamer to do?

Any help will be greatly appreciated by both myself and my... Read more

Answer:Dual Boot -- lost mouse/keyboard in win7 after 10 installation

If your keyboard and mouse are USB, you can try to unplug them and plug them again. Maybe Windows haven't yet loaded any drivers for them. Also check BIOS for entries such as "Enable USB mouse" or "Enable USB Keyboard" and try them to NO or YES. See if that makes any difference in Windows. This is to make USB input devices work before booting in Windows (such as to select a boot entry in a boot loader) but I have seen sometimes that they don't work in Windows, change the setting and check.

Hello,

I am having the most peculiar issue.
My computer responds just fine to my PS2 keyboard durring the Post as well as BIOS. But as soon as I try to install windows and the "press any key to boot from CD" dialog comes up my computer refuses to respond to keyboard commands (the 3 periods appear and it states that it can not boot).

I tried multiple Keyboards all the same issue.

You help is so much appreciated,

Answer:"Press any key to boot from CD" does not respond to Keyboard

Create boot disks, floppies. Thats how I get around issues like that, with
xp, and 2000. Takes six floppy discs.

I have an XPS 8500 that will not boot normally. It was running fine and all of a sudden came up with the message "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press any key". I have figured out if I go into BIOS first the PC will boot up but is very slow in doing so. I googled the issue and found something telling me to default the BIOS. I did this and it booted once. Trying to decide if the HD is out. I ran diagnostics and it does not see a HD. But if that's the case why does it even boot after going into BIOS. I am running Windows 10 Pro. I updated Windows 7 Pro. I am a strong believer in Dell and find it hard to believe that a HD would go out after only 4 years. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi There!
I am having a problem starting my PC! I have to start it in the boot menu under the RAID option. If I do not do this a message saying "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key.." comes up, and just keeps popping up regardless of what I press! I would try using my boot disk but for the life of me I can't find it, and as windows 7 was already installed on this computer when we got it 3 year ago, I can't accurately recall if it came with one!
I am no expert on BIOS, but I have read other problems similar to this one, and know that if I don't have the boot disk or the OS disk, I will need to know that at least. So my boot sequence is as follows:
Boot 1: (Hard drive)
Boot 2: CD/DVD: PM-ATAPI DV
Boot 3: USB: Generic-Compa
Boot 4: Lan

I am curious if the (Hard drive) is the issue. The BIOS tells me that anything in parentheses is disabled from corresponding type menu. But I truly have no idea how to change that. Which brings me here.
If anyone can offer any help to this, I would greatly appreciate it.

HiYou will have to give a little more information. What is the make and model of the computer? If it isn't a brand name what make and model of the motherboard.Or you can post a Speccy that will give that information.[ Go to Piriform's website, and click the big button.

Next, click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version.

You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.
After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.
Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course):
Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot

You will see the following prompt:
Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard

Now, once you are back in the forum topic you are posting in, click the button. Right-click in the empty space of the Reply box and click Paste. Then, click Add Reply below the Reply box.

Congrats! You have just posted your specs!... Read more

I recently (w/in last 2 weeks) purchased and received an E545 and after less than 8 hours of use the keyboard is extremely loose on the right hand side, primarily where the number pad sits but also extend into the right side of the alpha keyboard.  By losse, I mean that it doesn't sit well and when you press down on a key in that area of the keyboard, the entire right side of keyboard depresses.  ti's very disconcerting when typing and also extremely loud, which is an issue since I use the machine in meetings to take notes.

I've not seen much in searching, except for threads that are several years old.  I wanted to get some user input before contacting Lenovo, as I'm sure it will be better advice and less of a hassle.

Many thanks in advance for any help.

Answer:E545 keyboard problem - many keys not working - loose keyboard cable

Hi,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m sorry to hear that the entire keyboard of your Lenovo ThinkPad E545 depresses on key presses.

From what you have posted, it sounds like a keyboard flex. Keyboard flexing occurs if the board supporting the keys is not rigid or if the design of the keyboard is faulty. For good keyboards, the effect shouldn't be noticeable.

If you feel excessive flexing in your keyboard, try to reseat the keyboard. Since your system is under warranty, I would strongly suggest you to take assistance from Lenovo technical support.

Click here to open a link where you can select the country and get the exact contact support number. I?m sure they will be a great help.

Best Regards,
Mithun.

I currently have an X60 and have never had a single issue.  However I was recently infected with a Trojan, and after removing it with a reputable program, the keyboard and trackpoint mouse have stopped working. When I get the windows login screen, the trackpoint works fine, but the second I press any key, both keyboard and mouse become totally frozen. I can still use a USB keyboard and mouse with no issue at, but that is the only way. Any ideas as to how I can get them back up and working? Clearly, they (at least the mouse) are not totally fried b/c it works fine before I touch the keyboard. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, JT

Answer:X60 keyboard and trackpoint stopped working; only usb keyboard/mouse work

SOLVED!  I simply had to update the drivers in the device manager.  For some reason they were corrupt and it could not load them.  Simple fix, just took too much thought and digging to find solution.

As I wrote in the title, my Shift and Alt keys stopped working for keyboard shortcuts. However, the Shift key still works when capitalizing letters.

I've been dealing with this problem off/on for the past two weeks and haven't been able to figure it out. I've gone into Ease of Access features and turned on/off all of the available options (Mouse Keys, Sticky Keys, Toggle Keys, Filter Keys). I've pressed Shift for 8 seconds, and pressed it 5 times, and still haven't been able to correct it.

Thank you in advance for any help offered.

Possibly helpful additional information:
I've got a Spanish/Latin American keyboard layout installed in addition to the US English keyboard layout. I toggle back and forth with Left Alt + Shift (which is how I noticed my Shift key stopped working).
I play a game whose controls rely on a lot of Shift key pressing and holding.

When was the last time you used a can of air cleaner on the keyboard? If it isn't from contact wear often keyboards tend to get loaded up with dust and debris!

One example of that is having any snacks onhand around a pc where little bits get passed along from your fingers onto and under the keys themselves. Keyboards are known to get loaded up fast with any foods present!

Can i get update file for BIOS(traditional updating from boot CD, not OS!)

Sorry for my bad English.

Answer:Satellite L20 keyboard & touchpad not working but keyboard work in BIOS

If the traditional BIOS update is not available on the download page the only way to get it is to contact nearest authorized service provider. They have all versions.

But this keyboard and mouse issue is really strange. can you use it if you start operating system in ?safe mode??

I had a problem with my laptop which is certain key on my keyboard is not functioning. The weird is, it happened without a reason. because after I shutdown doing my work when I turn it on again, I discovered my "s", "d", "g", "h", "\", "m", " left shift", "caps lock" and "~" key did not work at all. I try taking the key off, cleaning underneath, but nothing seems to be working. After that I try to use usb keyboard and it seems the key can be entered. So I thought my hardware is the problem. than I replace into the new one, but still having the same problem. I already waste my money buying new keyboard. Does any one happen to know what sort of problem this is and how I would go about fixing it? Is it related to the registry. My laptop is Acer aspire 4740G, ram 4GB, processor i3 2.4GHz. I hope someone can help me to solve this problem.

My husbands ASUS touch screen laptop-keyboards are not working. I know it has windows 8. Core i3 intel inside. Like I said it is a touchscreen and neither the hardware keyboard or touch screen keyboard will do any thing (well it is like the computer understands i am doing something with the keyboard, but not typing. Ex. i will type and the curser line will do nothing but suddenly go like an italicized line. The mouse works and the touch screen works but I cannot type anything. I have wiggled the keys thinking maybe something is stuck but no help. also I have restored it to its factory settings thinking maybe he accidentally set some keyboard sleep command or something. We are both not smart at this, and again it is not my computer, he has it for work, so who knows what he did to it. But yeah, after restore it still wouldn't work and now I am stuck at the registration "getting started" windows and I cannot bypass them....or don't know how to without being about to type. The last it worked he said he cleaned it with pressurized air, so I don't know if that was too much for the keys...if he actually blew dirt into it, or what strange thing could have happened...but the fact that both touch screen and actual keyboard aren't working I am left stumped. I hope I gave enough information on the computer. It has that surface windows...he normally just uses the desk top mode. Ok thank you for any advice.

Hi All,

My laptop had a blue screen and keyboard stops working as well, I plugged the external keyboard and re-install the windows, now half of the keys are working and half dosent.

I am wondering has the kyboard damaged, I am also not sure if the I replace the keyboard will it work?

is there any settings in bios or any utility can fix the problem, could some one please advise?

Thanks
Nysoh

Answer:Keyboard stops working - USB external keyboard is fine

Hello Nysoh

On this virtual way nobody can say for sure what the problem is but if the internal keyboard is not working properly first step is keyboard replacement. If the problem still persists then troublemaker can be keyboard port or keyboard controller.

As far as I know BIOS has nothing to do with this issue.

I've had my desktop for a few years and never had a problem.  Just recently, it has started showing a Keyboard Error message on a black screen when I boot it up.  The wireless keyboard and mouse do not work, although it appears to boot up correctly.  Since I have a password on my computer, I cannot log in or do anything.  When this happens, I've rebooted 2-3 times, and it the keyboard and mouse will finally start working.  I have moved the toggle to different USB ports and this does not appear to make a difference.  How do I prevent this from happening?

I've run into an old problem when trying to reinstall windows 7, when I put the CD in and alter the BIOS to boot from CD, I get to the screen saying "Press any key to boot from CD" or something like that.
I've got a logitech G15 keyboard and a Microsoft media keyboard, both are USB, when I press them there is no response and it boots from the harddisk. I've had this problem ever since I installed Windows XP, first I thought it was a keyboard issue, but then I got the G15 and the problem persisted. Since then I've replaced the motherboard, PSU, infact I think I've changed every single component, but the problem persist. Anyone have an idea of what is causing this? I'm forced to dig into the old storage at work for old PS/2 keyboards every time I'm installing a new OS

PS: The keyboards both work perfectly in BIOS, after booting an OS and when the installation disk has booted. Just in that place in between where you need to press buttons to either boot from various media or skip disk checks etc.

Answer:USB keyboard not working at boot.

Hello Flashist,

In your BIOS, doublecheck to make sure that you have a "USB Keyboard Support" type option enabled.

Hope this helps,

Hey I have a problem with my PC not picking up my keyboard (Razer Lycosa USB) or any other USB keyboard until windows starts.

PC Specs are:

i5 750
GA-P55A-UD5
16GB RAM G.Skill Ripjaws 1600
8800GT SLi

The only thing that I have done recently is install a Noctua NH-U9B cpu cooler.

I have tried every usb port on the back of my motherboard (there is about 10! haha) with no luck and even tried the ones on the front of the case although I doubted they would work.

I have gotten into the BIOS using an old PS/2 keyboard and all the legacy USB options are enabled, I did try disabling them all and starting the PC and then re-enabling them but that had no success either.

I disconnected everything from HDD, RAM, GPU's, DVD, Wireless card etc to see if they were causing it but that wasn't it either.

CMOS reset hasn't worked and I have taken the battery out for 24 hours that didn't make a difference either.

I am running out of things to try, so I thought I would see if any of you guys had any ideas.

Hello guys,

today my keyboard (hama wireless keyboard 2,4 G) stopped working after i changed my PSU. I hope i didn't fry anything but i doubt it because:

* the keyboard is working during boot (e.g. i can access the bios (and yes, everything is enabled there) and i can select the os in bootloader)
* when booting into ubuntu (on the same machine) the keyboard is working fine
* all other usb devices (usb mouse, external harddrive, usb sticks) are working.

During boot (black screen with win logo) the NUMPAD led is glowing (and responding) up to about one second before the login screen. Then the led goes off and the keyboard is dead.

I also tried another usb keyboard and different usb ports without success (unfortunately i don't have a ps2 keyboard around anymore so i couldn't try one of these).
I tried booting in safe mode, keyboard aren't working there either.

System specs:
OS: Windows 7 64bit / Ubuntu 9.10 64bit (dualboot via Wubi)
Mainboard: Asus M2N-SLI Deluxe SocketAM2
CPU: AMD Athlon64 X2 5000+

HDD: 2x Seagate HD SATAII 300GB (RAID0)
PSU: Be Quiet BQT S6-SYS-UA-450W (before: Fortron ATX 350W)

I have had a weird problem of the keyboard not working during boot up -- except it WILL let me get into BIOS. And this is the ONLY time it will not work....

A little background is in order, however. Previously, the keyboard stopped working, first during boot up, then totally. Then the mouse stopped working as well. Couldn't do anything at all.... The keyboard is a Micro Innovations, and I'd had it plugged into the PS/2, but I eventually found out that if I plugged it into the USB port instead (it goes either way), the keyboard would work. So, I went out & got a USB mouse, and it worked too. So I was thinking that the card was fried.

Last night, I decided to boot it into Safe mode to run some scans. And it wouldn't boot into safe mode, just kept ignoring my F8 command, and going straight to Windows. I did find out that it WILL take my DEL command and go into BIOS, where the keyboard works just fine.

So tonite I thought I'd try a repair, thinking maybe some files were corrupt. And it will not take any keystroke to boot from the CD. Again, I can still get into BIOS, though. And, as you can see, it is working fine now. This is how it started in the PS/2 port, when it eventually quit working altogether.....

Honestly, I don't know if this is a software or a hardware issue.....

I have Windows XP Home SP1
AMD-K6 3D processor

I until recently owned a logitech G15 gaming keyboard, until i spilt some water on it then it died. I then bought a Razer Lycosa keyboard, but when i plugged it into my computer it did not work. The lights on the keyboard were switched on, but none of the buttons on the keyboard registered anything (nor would the caps/scroll/num lock lights switch on at afater their respective keys were pressed). However, the keyboard works fine in my windows 7 Partition, and on the other computers in my house, so that rules out any hardware errors. When i managed to finally boot into XP (Using an old ps/2 keyboard), XP kept asking me to install the drivers for the keyboard, along with my mouse , 2 unknown devices and, bizarrely, my DVD drive, yet when the wizard had run through it would always give the same message: 'Windows cannot install the software because the correct software cannot be found'. Thinking this erratic behaviour was caused by a virus i did a full scan with kaspersky VRT and removed 3 trojans and a keylogger from my system. However after rebooting from the scan and removal of the viruses, the install driver popups kept appearing, and the keyboard still did not work. Leading me to believe that possibly the malware has corrupted my system files or registry. I have tried several fixes and tricks from the internet to apparently solve this problem, none of which have worked. What ive already tried:Various 'code 39' fixes including editing the upper and lower filters in the registr... When I boot my computer my USB keyboard doesent work. It lights up but none of the keys work. Its not until I actually remove it from the usb port and then put it back in that it starts working again.

How can I make it so that it works normally after rebooting?

Answer:USB Keyboard not working after boot

G'day Skudge, I have seen this kind of problem especially in AMD machines and most especially after WXP-SP-2 has been loaded over a previous version.
I don't know how others fixed it but there were a series of ideas to try, the problem is most likely nothing to do with your keyboard but involve the on-board USB initialisation, and is some kind of problem within windows and drivers controlled by MS.
Firstly of course reverting to a PS/2 keyboard may be neccessary before you wear your usb sockets out.
Removing SP-2 worked in some cases.
Fitting and using a commercial PCI-USB card with commercial drivers (nothing MS) also works. (very reliable fix)
The most successful idea to date has been clean loading a slipstreamed WXP-SP-2 version, this was especially applicable to AMD processor type boards.
I do feel the best workaround was fitting the add in card. (Cheap, easy and reliable)
Leave the onboard sockets for flash-drives and ad-hoc gadgets.
Cheers, qldit.

I have a Dell 7737 laptop and from time to time it develops a firmware glitch where random keys stop working for both BIOS Setup and Operating Systems. After such thing happens neither shutdown (Full shutdown / Fast Boot disabled) nor restart get the keyboard back to a normal state. At this point the only workarround is to disconnect the AC power cord and then either drain the battery or physically remove it.
This laptop's battery cover is not designed for daily removal and it is starting to get loose because of this BIOS bug.
I am running BIOS version A14 but this bug was present since I purchased the laptop with BIOS version A07. Sometimes I cannot even type my password because the random keys that stop working match those it uses.
Please Dell could you provide a BIOS hotfix for this annoying issue?

Motherboard: MSI Z77-G45
RAM G.Skill Ripjaw Series 16GB DDR3 1600
Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 670 SC
OS: Windows 7 HP

I also have 3 hard drives and an optical drive (of course).

OK, so it looks like I have the latest BIOS. I'm not surprised because I didn't even get this from Newegg until last week. Any help would be appreciated!

When I start up my computer, my USB keyboard works fine. However, when it gets to the WinXP load screen, the LED on my keyboard goes off and I find that when I get to the log-in screen, my keyboard doesn't work. My mouse has no problems. This has happened before, but I think it was just by pure luck it started working again then (it started working when I unplugged my ethernet last time, but I think that was just a fluke as it doesn't work when I try it now). There is NOTHING wrong with my keyboard and moving it to different ports doesn't help. It works in safe mode and when I go into setup/boot menu at start-up. I'm trying to figure out what the real cause of this problem is, so any help would be greatly appreciated! I can't think of any similarities between what I was doing on my computer the last time this happened and this time, so I'm baffled. It's like it just decides to randomly stop working.

Answer:Keyboard stops working during boot and can't log in

Is your ethernet connection usb? How about the mouse? May be
a hitch somewhere in your usb, hitch/conflict. Get a ps2 converter
for your keyboard and see if it works, do the same for your mouse.
This will free up the usb resource. If your ethernet is usb I would
change that to a standard nic card or use the onboard cat5 ethernet
connection. Imho...

plugging an ide video card in, then plug the monitor to it
changing the cmos battery
doing the reset cmos jumper trick
cleaning the entire computer including the contacts of both sticks of memory.

I can not get to the bios and I cannot use a recovery disk, because the monitor will not come on. The computer has an on board video

Did you try use another monitor and keyboard on the problem machine? Let us know if anything works. If not maybe you have blown ports on that machine.

I performed an upgrade to windows 10 and had some difficulty with usb ports and my blu-ray drive not working. I then decided to restore back to previous OS. The restore brought me back to Windows 10 again(possibly the upgrade version) and my blu-ray drive seemed to be working. I still had trouble with the usb ports so I decided to switch back to Windows 7. In doing this, my wireless keyboard and mouse stopped working. I tried a usb mouse and keyboard but this didn't work either. Are there any solutions?

Answer:keyboard and mouse not working at boot up

Do you have a restore point that is prior to your attempt to upgrade to Windows 10?

If so, I would suggest that you attempt to restore to that. I can do no better than that. I too attempted to "upgrade" to Windows 10 but have had to return to my previous OS.

Hey whats up guys?

Hey when I have Windows Explorer opened up, and I press lets say the ' H ' Key , you would expect it to jump down and highlight a folder with that starts with the letter H right? Mine Jumps to the top right corner & searches my computer for files that start with H, or whatever else I choose to add into there afterward

How can I make it go back to the way it used to be & have it highlight folders.
Thanks in advance!

Answer:When I press buttons on my keyboard..

Hello Spinsta Welcome to the Seven Forums!

It mainly depends on where you have WE opened to when going to press the H key. If you simply click on your main drive here and press H the highlight immediately goes to HomeGroup. If you click on let's say the first folder on C with an A it may go direct to the hiberfil.sys file at the root which begins with H.

If you clicked in the search box and press H Windows assumes that is the first letter of the item you are running a search on there. If you happen to have Programs Files or Program Files(x86) open and click on anything in one of those directories it will go to the first H item found. WE is acting normally searching for the nearest H item being the explorer tool.

I have recently reinstalled Windows XP and now my keyboard symbols are weird. I have to press them twice for them to work, then it gives me two. My number " 6 " works fine, first tap and it's there... but with the " ^ " I have to press it twice. I can't find any drivers for this keyboard and everyone seems to just say; unplug, restart and change the USB slot. But none of this solves my problem. It is especially annoying when typing reports when my quotations have to be so difficult.

My keyboard is a Santek Eclipse, Model: KU-0603

Only these symbols are this way: ' " ^ ` ~

Everything else works just fine. I thought that perhaps I accidentally executed some program or option, but I can't find anything.

Answer:Keyboard:Need to press symbols twice then get two

I plugged in another keyboard and the symbols still act the same... Now I'm uberly stomped >.<

Answer:if i press some keys in keyboard (key such as G,T and ESC ),...

Hi! @pramith, Thanks for stopping by the HP Support Forums!

I understand that you have keyboard issues with your laptop.

Please try the steps recommended below.

Shut down the notebook, unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold  down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Re-insert the battery and plug in the AC Adapter.

Turn on your keep tapping f10 key to enter BIOS. Select restore defaults by tapping the f9 key once. Press f10 to save changes and exit.
If the issue still persists, please try the steps recommended below.

Turn off the computer and then restart it.
Press the Esc key repeatedly to see if a startup menu opens.
If a setup menu does not open, the integrated keyboard hardware is not working. The integrated keyboard in the notebook should be serviced or replaced. To continue using the notebook, connect a USB-wired keyboard to a USB port and restart the computer.
If a setup menu opens, use the arrow keys to navigate the menus. If these keys are working in the startup menu, but then fail when Windows loads, the problems might be related to the keyboard software.
Restart the computer.
In Device Manager, uninstall and reinstall the keyboard software:
In Windows, search for and open Device Manager.
Click View and select Show Hidden Devices.
Click the arrow next to Keyboards, right-click the keyboard device name, then select Uninstall to remove the device from Windows.
Continue removing device names in the Keybo... Read more

Hi all;
We just turned on our other laptop and the keys are all changed. Most of the keys we press have totally different characters, below so far is what come up instead:
- p = ;0p
- e = d3e
- q = a1q
- f = f4r
- o = l9o

We have been trying for an hour to change this but cannot find an answer. Can anyone please help?

Answer:Issues with keyboard - eg i press P and get :0P, e gets d3e.....

This is what's known as Ghosting, and I am not seeing any articles on the internet explaining how to fix it.

To anyone who thinks Ghosting is where you can't press more than a few keys at the same time, that's called "key rollover". What we are seeing here is true Ghosting in action, and this is not not what keyboard manufacturers are referring to when they say they have "Anti-Ghosting".

While probably dusting the keyboard off, I noticed it just stopped working. I am typing this using an external Dell USB keyboard attached to the laptop.I tried every thing by the websites , manuals, commensense, pcdoctors and non of the keys on the primary keyboard will work.Even the Ctrl+Alt+Del won't work. No NumLock, No sceenlock, No caps lock - nothing. Is there any hidden key combination which renders a keyboard totally inactive?I doubt that dusting with a feather could do it. Thanking in anticipation.KS

Answer:KEYBOARD STOPPED WORKING, AN EXTERNAL USB KEYBOARD DOES

Doubt it's a key combination.Case is about disconnected wire of it - happens to be under the keyboard. It's a pity you didn't mention the model of laptop. But, however, you can find a manual on how to disassembly it on lenovoservicetraining.com

ok...so, i'm forced to use this onscreen keyboard, because my keyboard suddenly stopped working . tried switching it with another one i know works, and had the same problem with it, so, that rules out the keyboard it's self as having the issue. tried a sys restore...same prob. tried reinstalling windows, still have the problem. i have a driver for my texas instruments usb ports that is reading not successfully installed but i can't seem to find the driver 4 it anywhere, because they claim win 7 installs it automatically...but it obviously didn't. i have tried switching usb ports, tried pulling out the usb to the keyboard restarting, then plugging back in, and still have this issue. can anyone please help? ps: not getting error messages, and the keyboard claims "this device is working properly"

I have had this problem on and off with this laptop for some time. Sometimes I could fix it with just flipping the laptop all the way over and back a few times and the laptop keyboard would come out of tablet mode and work. You can see for a very few short seconds the keyboard will operate during initial boot process however during the boot process it disables. Now all of the time. Is there a Bios setting anyone knows to turn on permanently? I really hate the tablet mode as it is and certainly can live without it.

Last year, one of our PC have this rare bug that it cannot use keyboard in boot menu (though it works in BIOS and Windows 7). Even I've change keyboard, still not working. During that time it doesn't have Ubuntu or other OS installed there.

And now that keyboard doesn't work anymore when resuming Windows (it cannot use arrows to choose options in boot menu). I know it's not on hibernate's fault because this works in other PC. I tried run Ubuntu in demo mode to reformat the whole hard drive (including Windows 7). But when attempting to reinstall Windows, I'm stuck in "Pressy any key to continue" 'cause the keyboard isn't working thus it cannot install Windows anymore.

I believe that this failure is in motherboard (am I right?) Please help us so that we can continue our business. Thanks for reading everyone.

I have a new Dell Inspiron 2350
windows 8.1
for the last week or so the usb wireless keyboard and mouse do not work when the system is booted or after coming out of deep sleep mode. I have to unplug the usb dongle and plug it in again for them to work.

I have already checked the powering saving settings for these devices, and it is disabled.
There is no setting in the bios that I can see which would cause this.
I have re-installed the drivers.
I have tried different USB port.
Dell have even replaced the keyboard and mouse and batteries, same problem.

Anyone got any other ideas?

Answer:usb keyboard and mouse not working after boot or sleep

Check your Bios settings to make sure that Legacy USB is on. Also there are issues still to this day with Dell computers and Windows Sleep mode. Did you install any manufacturer software for the keyboard? Make any changes to USB device management in Devices or in the Power Profile?

It does help to know the manufacturer & model of the USB keyboard and mouse. That way if someone else is having issues and sees this thread. They can hopefully see a solution if we find one.

Hi

I recently tried installing VM Player on my Toshiba M200. When I rebooted my machine I found my network connections did not work. I tried to uninstall the VM Player but it failed half way. As the program had created a number of virtual network connections which I could not delete I went into the registry and delete 20 or so entries I thought where related.

I rebooted and found my HID Keyboard and Wireless devices not functioning. So I began using the softward ketyboard to try and fix the problem. I was able to reboot and login using the software keyboard until I did a restore to last normal boot setting. At which point, instead of getting my login window I get a message box asking me to press Ctrl-Alt-Del. When I do so using the software keyboard I get another window saying because of security I should press the Windows Security Key instead of the Ctrl-Alt-Del. When I press the Windows Security Key Button on the bottom right side of the screen nothing happens.

What can I do. I have also tried attaching a USB CD drive (Philips) but cannot get the notebook to boot from it. I get an error message (so I have got it looking for CD boot drives) saying the notebook cannot find the drive. The CD lights up during bootup but only for a sec.

I am desperate so please let me know what options I have or what I can do about this. The physical keyboard works during the bootup until the Windows first booting screen appears. No Caps lock or such working by the time I get to the ... Read more

Answer:Portege M200 - Keyboard is not working and I can't boot from CD/DVD

Hi

A long story about your issue... I think the reason of this is why you have deleted some registry keys. If you delete something in the Windows registry you should really know what you do. You can damage the complete Windows system!
So I think this is the reason why the keyboard doesn?t anymore.

In the user manual I have founded that the CD-ROM booting option is only available with optional optical disk drive.
So for me it sounds like that your USB CD drive is not compatible to the notebook?

Hi, I have just purchased this keyboard modification for my flight Sims, but I am a unsure how this will work because some keys are modified to be pressed at the same time. I would like to know what happens when you press some keys together on a keyboard before I start to mess about doing this. Please look at the link below and you will see the modifications they use on the keyboards. I realise you can press some key combinations using shift, Ctrl etc, but these ones look different so take a look before commenting. Thanks!!http://www.rogerdodger.net/diyflightsims/keyboard_home.html

Answer:What happens when you press two keys on the keyboard at the same time?

You can press key combinations of any keys, especially when playing games. In some cases, you might be limited to how many keys you press at the same time (2, 3, or 4 keys) but they can still be pressed together. How a program reacts to these presses is entirely up to the program. For typing, if you press and hold a combination of keys, it will show all keys in the order they were pressed, but only repeat the last key to make contact (it's humanly impossible to make them all contact at the exact same time). For example, if I attempt to press ASDF all at the same time, I get something like this: adfssssss, with 's' being the last key to make contact. In games, key combinations are a normal thing. For example, if playing a first person shooter, you might have your movement keys mapped to WASD, space for jump, F to open/use things, and R to reload. If I am holding W to move forward, then press space to jump over something, R to reload, without releasing any of the keys, all actions should happen simultaneously. You should be only limited to the number of keys you can have pressed at one time.

I have seen the above in various posts, here and else where and have thought this must be some obtuse joke , which I did not get the handle on. Then to-day P.O.S.T halted at an early stage, and there it was 'Unlock keyboard press F1 to continue'and of course pressing F1 did nothing because........ A Re boot did the same. We went to do the weekly shop Came home had a refreshing cuppa booted up and all was normal So what was that all about?

Answer:unlock keyboard press F1 to continue

Either the lead for the Keyboard wasn't fitted properly, or there just wasn't any/enough power to "see" the keyboard correctly.I agree, it IS stupid... My old system's keyboard was broken and it said press "F1" to continue... What good would that do if the keyboard has died?Anyway, I hope I have answered your question
