X1 Carbon 5th Gen: Keyboard backlight not persistent after screen off, or system sleep.

Question: X1 Carbon 5th Gen: Keyboard backlight not persistent after screen off, or system sleep.

When the system resumes from sleep or from the screen being turned off, the keyboard backlight doesn't resume to its previous setting. VERY annoying when you're trying to work. In this thread they talk about a potential BIOS limitation causing the backlight to not resume after a restart, but what about after sleep?https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-P-and-W-Series-Mobile/W540-Backlit-keyboard-always-on/td-p/151... By contrast, the X1 Yoga Gen 2, does resume the backlight state after screen off, sleep and even restart! Surely the Carbon should have the same feature set as its brother.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Just got my 5th Gen X1 Carbon few days and wondering if there is a way to keep the keyboard backlight always on? Everytime I Shutdown or Reboot, the backlight turns off and has to be turned on manually.  My 5 year old HP laptop much smarter than this in regards to keyboard backlight.

So it's bad enough that my X1C doesn't even have an ambient light sensor for the screen or keyboard, but the keyboard backlight doesn't stay on after a reboot or putting the computer to sleep/hibernate. I suppose the compromise to this is keeping the keyboard backlight always on. How can I do this? Why doesn't Lenovo have a software management utility for the keyboard backlight? Very disappointed.

I have a new Thinkpad X1 Carbon 5th Gen.   Every time I turn on or wake up the computer, the keyboard backlight is off, even if it had been on when I had previously shut it down or put it to sleep.  I don't understand why this one feature seems to have no memory and resets to a default of "off" every time.  I can't imagine anyone would want the default to be off, rather than the last setting.   I looked in the Lenovo Settings and the User Guide but found nothing.   Does anyone know how to fix this?   Thanks.

As the title says, I need a programmatical/software method to control the keyboard's backlight, in windows. In linux, I am able to turn OFF the keyboard backlight with...echo 0 > /sys/class/leds/tpacpi\:\:thinklight/brightness However, You CANNOT turn it ON.  This does nothing.echo 255 > /sys/class/leds/tpacpi\:\:thinklight/brightness In windows, the hotkey utility shows an overlay whenever the backlight is changed.  So messaging IS handled somehow. Lenovo, we need this functionality.  It is crucial that we have absolute control over our own devices.FN+Space to turn on a light is NOT enough. I'm looking for ACPI / WMI / Python / C++  Answers if possible.  Thank you.

Answer:X1 Carbon 3rd Gen / 20BS : Need SOFTWARE to control keyboard backlight.

maybe helps....you can ask for the  source code i think is  free.....clevo etc.use the same keyboard controller like lenovo etc.. http://forum.techinferno.com/clevo/3844-%5Bsoftware-mod%5D-backlight-controller-lightfx.html Best regards...

I see that the adaptive keyboard auto-dims after inactivity. I'd like to manually dim/sleep the adaptive keyboard so that the backlight doesn't distract in a dark room. Is there a way to do this? If not, I'd like to put in a feature request for it. Thanks!

I'm looking for help on a problem with my X60 tablet. When the computer comes back from sleep, and sometimes simply after a screen 'time-out' after a period of inactivity, the screen backlight fails to come back on. A re-boot corrects the problem. I'm hoping that the problem lies in an arcane Windows setting, and not hardware. Hi Issue: Thinkpad X1 Carbon 5th Gen black screen / 'screen off' on resume from sleep I know this issue has been posted about several times regarding the X1 series but .... none of those threads seem to have any kind of answer to this problem. This seems like quite a horrendous issue for a +1500 to have !! Constantly 'hard rebooting' and losing all my open work is seriously seriously annoying. Please note: My drivers are 100% up to date based on Lenovo's own update software. I have all official Windows 10 updates issued to date (21 aug 17). These are the patterns I've noticed: - It doesn't always replicate the same behaviour: after resume from sleep sometimes it's 'black' and other times it's fine. I'd say 66% of the 'lid openings' it's OK but 33% of cases it's not.- I've found that if I shut the lid again and reopen (often 3 or more times and waiting 30+ seconds on each open then 30+ seconds on each close) then I can eventually 'force' it to turn the screen on.- If I 'manually' set the unit to sleep from the start menu rather than just closing the lid, I'm pretty certain that it *does not* exhibit this problem. I'll be 100% certain once I've tried this a few more times.-  I've removed all USB devices from the laptop one-by-one and waited for the problem to reoccur thus ruling out any single or combination of USB devices.- I have the 'lock screen' shown when it does successfully resume from sleep. - The screen 'blackness' looks t... Hello everyone, I had two concerns about the Yoga 2 Pro and I just want to make sure if these things are the same across all the devices or just mine. 1. Do you find your "N" key is illuminated much more prominently that all the other keys when the backlight is on.  Feel free to add a picture of your keyboard w/ the backlight on. 2. When the the display is turned off from inactivity and you touch the mousepad/screen, do you find the screen flickes for a few seconds before adjusting to the correct brightness? Thanks ya'll.

When 4th gen tries to go to sleep, the power light stays green, along with other lights like mic and mute. Issue Date-------------------- ------------------- --------------- ---- -----------2.67 (G4UJ31UC) 2.67 (G4ETA7WW) 1.13 (G4HT39WW) 01 2016/09/09 For almost 2 months, many times per day, Ubuntu attempts to install the mandatory kernel update 1404_HWE_EOL. If this update is installed then the keyboard backlight comes on every time the screen saver is turned off (after it has been on). If this update is removed the proper keyboard backlight operation returns. No other Ubuntu updates can be installed until this 1404_HWE_EOL update has been installed. Hence, it prevents any security updates from being installed if one cannot live with this HUGELY annoying backlight problem. I have reported this here http://askubuntu.com/questions/817383/ubuntu-1404-hwe-eol-kernel-breaks-thinkpad-t530-keyboard-backl... Unfortuantely there has been no responces at all. Please, can someone at Lenovo who supports the Ubuntu Lenovo drivers figure out what in the 1404_HWE_EOL update breaks the keyboard backlight operation AND FIX IT and tell us it is fixed? Until then I have to dismiss the updater a dozen times per day and cannot get any other updates. Thanksoldunixguy

Comp goes to sleep, when I try wake it up, X1 works but diplay is totaly gone. I can hear the sounds, see the fingerprint sensor etc is alive but can not wake up the display..  Model is 208A and Win 8.1 Any ideas ?  Thanks

I just got my new carbon touch thinkpad today, and I couldn't be happier, until I closed the lid and reopened it a couple of minutes later. The screen froze for a while and then I got a BSOD with the notice CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED. I hoped it would be just some coincidence, and updating my drivers and installing windows updates would solve it. So I did, and closed the lid again. After reopening it, I got the same error. So I figured I could just as well restore to my factory settings. Without luck. After updating everything for a second time, still no luck. I check the disk and did a memory check, but everything seems fine. The lenovo Solution center isn't reporting any issues either.  I'm out of ideas. I looked into the minidump created by the blue screen, and it seemed the process failing is called csrss.exe. I've been trying to fix this issue all day now. Any suggestions?

Answer:brand new x1 carbon touch blue screen after sleep

I have some more information. Last two times I woke the machine up from sleep I had different errors. First time still the blue screen, but now with the error message KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR. Here's an excerpt from the dump file KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR (7a)
The requested page of kernel data could not be read in. Typically caused by

When I leave my computer for say, 20 minutes or so, it doesn't go to sleep (as it normally should with inactivity) but it is still running (I can hear the fan hard at work) but I can't seem to "wake" it back up. The screen is black and the laptop is unresponsive to clicks on the touchpad or closing and opening the laptop. I have to hold the power button down for ~20 seconds before it shuts down and then I have to turn it back on and re-open all my applications and windows to keep working. This has been happening since I first got the laptop (August 2014). I've talked to Tech Support many many times. Nothing seems to work. They replaced my motherboard -- but that doesn't seem to solve the problem. Is it just my laptop or has this happened to anyone else's?? Help!!

I'm hoping someone can provide some feedback on how well the X1 Carbon keyboard and screen have been for using it for software development. I use Visual Studio and Remote Desktop quite a bit and have some concerns regarding the screen and keyboard.   I don't want to get a Hi DPI screen and have to workaround the limitations of the OS.   Are there issues with the RDP client and the Hi DPI screen? How has the keyboard been for someone who uses the function keys 10% of the time?  I usually rely on memory to know where to press the F3, F5 keys.  I'm concerned it will be hard to find the right location without physical keys. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:X1 Carbon, Adaptive Keyboard, and Hi DPI screen

Just got mine shipped. I will install Visual Studio this weekend and let you know. IE 11 scales well (looks great and is super fast) in High DPI screen but Chrome isn't ready yet (works okay with some workarounds). Overall, the experience isn't as good as it would be on a machine with lower 1920x1080 resolution. With the font scaling enabled, things are okay but not as crisp in many programs. Still adjusting to the weird keyboard (home/end keys are at the worst location). Backspace and Delete side by side did bother me today a few times. If the lack of physical F5, F8 and F10 keys bothers me, I might put some kind of stickers over function key area to guide my fingers. I have turned off the dynamic adaptive keys (function key mode is set for all applications). I think it is a very nice device but they did mess up the keyboard experience quite a bit! High DPI support should eventually come to older/other windows applications (apps from windows store don't have an issue with high DPI)

Hi, I've had this laptop for a year and it has worked great. A couple of weeks ago the screen suddenly turned off. I plugged it into an external monitor and that did work, however the keyboard did not work. I could still use it with an external keyboard. I have Ubunutu installed, and there is a file that contains the current state of the lid (open/closed). When I open this file, it always says the lid is closed, no matter wither it is open or closed in reality. Can anyone suggest how I can continue to diagnose this problem? It would be nice to fix it, but even if there was a way of forcing the laptop to think the lid is always open, I would be happy. Thank you!

Just wanted to get people's opinions/experiences with regards to backlight bleeding on Lenovo laptops.

2. Does Lenovo have a good track record with fixing backlight bleed issues under warranty? (I've had some horrible experiences with Dell...)

Our company recently purchased a few new X1 Carbon's with the adaptive keypboard function strip. These machines were shipped running Windows 7 Pro. Unfortunately, on one of the machines, the function keyboard only toggles between its four modes when the domain Admin user (which also happens to be user account the machine was setup and initially used under) is logged in. When other users, even those made members of the local Admins group, login, the keyboard defaults to the F-Key display and does not respond to mode changes (although the F-keys themselves work fine). Prior to logging in, any user can toggle between the F-key mode and one of the function modes from the Windows login screen, but as soon as anyone other then the Admin user logs in, the system defaults back to only showing the F-Keys. When I pull up the Adaptive keyboard control panel while logged in as the working Admin, is shows everything as being enabled as expected. But when I log in as another user, everything is disabled. Attempting to enable any of the adaptive keyboard settings has no effect, and the settings are not even saved when the settings menu is closed and reopened. Any thoughts on why the adaptive keyboard only works correctly from a single user account or the login-screen? Hi All, The screen backlight of my 2013 X1 Carbon (type 34xx) has a noticeable flicker when not at full brightness. I can see the flicker by waving a pencil in front of the screen, and it gives me headaches. There are a couple of utilities for modifying the PWM (flicker) frequency for the backlight. One for Windows called IntelPWMControl is shown in this YouTube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ycKzTDnTYTQ Another is to use intel-gpu-tools on Linux as discussed here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Backlight#Backlight_PWM_modulation_frequency_.28Intel_i915_only... Both of these utilities use an API provided by the intel graphics driver to adjust the frequency.  Currently I'm running the brightness at 100% to avoid being affected by the flicker, but this halves my effective battery life - so I would much prefer to be able to dim the screen.  Does anyone have any insight into what is a *safe* maximum PWM frequency for the backlight? The default seems to be around 220hz but I find I have to increase to around 2khz before the flicker is undetectable to me. I'm concerned about whether running the frequency this high might somehow damage or shorten the life of my screen - otherwise, why would the frequency not be set this high by the manufacturer?

Answer:Safety of increasing backlight PWM frequency on X1 Carbon?

Have you checked the refresh rate is set to 60 Hz ? I know it is different parameter but Lenovo uses 50 Hz by default. The X1 Carbon display is TN panel so do not expect any level of quality.

My sister dropped her T410 and cracked the LCD screen, which clearly was not covered under the basic warranty.  The $950 quote for repair was a little steep (basically the cost of the laptop) so we decided to try a repair ourselves.  I replaced the LCD screen with a model suggested by the Lenovo rep.  With the new screen in place, the backlight doesn't function at all (can see information on the screen with a flashlight but otherwise nothing).  I also put the old screen back in (which previously was backlit despite being cracked) and observed the same problem.  I made sure the LCD cable was seated firmly at both ends. Considering things as they stand now, my question is about the best route to take from here.  As I understand it, since the LED backlight is powered by the system board, we either buy a new system board or use this laptop as a "desktop" attached to a standalone monitor.  Replacing the LED sub card seems questionable for this particular problem (saw another post here with that conclusion).  We could replace the LCD cable, but it seems to me more likely that the fuse on the motherboard is blown.  If it comes down to motherboard vs. desktop use, we'll probably avoid the motherboard replacement since it is somewhat expensive. Am I missing any obvious ideas?  Should I consider replacing the LCD cable more seriously?  Is the LED sub card more relevant to the LCD/backlight than I think?  I'm hoping t... Hi,
I have 3 issues with my Dell 3147 laptop.
The first one has to do with the keyboard and touchpad. For no apparent reason, the touchpad will disable and re-enable itself and in the process the physical keyboard will completely disable and won't enable again unless I restart the laptop
Second issue has to do with the sleep mode. Whenever I put the laptop on sleep mode I cannot go back to my session and have to press the power button for several seconds until the laptop resets/restarts completely.
Third issue has to do with the screen. It will flip upside-down without me doing anything, which means that I need to manually revert it using the keyboard shortcut everytime.
Appreciate any help.
My laptop is still under warranty, only bought it 10 months ago.
Thanks,
Ioannis

Hi, Been looking for a solution for a while to no avail...here's the issue My backlight is always ON even when on sleep or shutdown at varying brightness depending on the power state. -When on AC (in sleep or shutdown, or 'display off' through PowerManager) the backlight is visible even in a lit room - Display is off, no images, just backlight.(brightest) -When off AC (in sleep or shutdown) backlight is visible (when in dark room) -Everytime display changes from on to off, I will see that backlight goes completely off for a moment but when it settles in its new power state the backlight always returns. -Finally, the backlight only completely goes off when i disconnect the battery. I've only ever done required updates through lenovo and windows update. My display works and looks perfect otherwise, laptop performs as it should. Recently installed a new(original lenovo) battery because it needed replacement..  Any ideas? Hi,
I have a Dell Optiplex GX240 with Windows XP on it.
At first I had a BSOD after installing a CD/Drive. I changed the RAM to a different slot and the computer booted up normally.
I had it working for about 40 minutes and PC worked fine, apart from an incident when PC shut down by itself, with a flash of a blue screen.
This morning I booted the computer again and the OS loads fine but the screen goes to sleep shortly after.
That won't happen when in safe mode.
Do not seem to have any system Restore point previous to this morning and I have rebooted the PC enough times to use Last good known configuration.

Any ideas??
Thanks

Try going into safe mode and remove/reinstall the graphic drivers.

Answer:Monitor goes to sleep, backlight fails to turn back on when woken up

I do believe there was a BIOS update and a presentation director update that corrects those problems.  Have u updated yet?

Question: Keyboard Backlight

Hi,
I have a Dell Inspiron 1500 5000 Series laptop, Windows 10.
I would like to toggle my backlight keyboard. I see it on my keyboard, and in the Windows Mobility Center, but I would like to increase the duration. Currently, my keyboard stays lit for 60 seconds. I would like it to not turn off at all.
Can I turn off the backlight timer? Can I chose to keep it on for more than 60 seconds?
Thank you so much.

Answer:Keyboard Backlight

Hi talynnkpayne,
The duration of the backlight on your keyboard cannot be increased. As it is designed in such a way that when you leave it idle after few seconds the backlit will turn off. However, when you press any keys, the backlight will be turned on again until and unless you manually turn it off.

Question: Keyboard backlight

Hello,
I've just bought a new dell inspiron 7559. When I was buying it, the consultant said that it is a little different from other 7559, because it has swedish keyboard. But the only difference is that it has two extra keys. I came home with my new laptop, and tried turning on the led on the keyboard but it didn't happen. I found out that f10 key should have an icon that shows that it should turn on the backlight. Mine does not have one. as of right now I'm using linux ubuntu.
Any Ideas? What should I do? Is it possible that my laptop does not have a led keyboard because it's swedish?

While nosing around my laptop for completely unrelated purposes, I noticed that right next to the wiring hookups to the keyboard and one of the usb ports, is a little hookup that is not used for anything. On the circuit board, it said "light." Which leads me to believe that this would be the hookup for the backlight on a keyboard. I was thinking about using the hookup to power some extra LEDs in the case. Does anybody know the voltage/ amplitude of that little hookup?

Since upgrading to Windows 10 , my X1 is having awful power management issues. It randomly powers off when the lid is closed and often times won't wake up from sleep. It does this power on , blinking green light power button , power off mode:  see video of issue here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0jd7fjxmJg The only way to get it out of this mode is plug in the power cord and press and hold the power button to force off then turn on. Even though the battery is at 90% + it won't power on without being plugged in.  I have type: 20BSCTO1WW , Bios N14ET32W , Windows 10 ProAll latest ThinkVantage and Lenovo Power Management updates installed  Any thoughts? Does it need to go back to Lenovo ?

The start screen is a much different Lenovo splash page. I also had to roll back the wireless drivers as I could not connect to certain networks which previously had no issues.

Answer:T440P Backlight Keyboard...

Hello and welcome,

The keyboard is listed as an optional service part so you should be able to replace it if you're handy.  The Hardware Maintenance Manual includes instructions.

The keyboard FRU numbers are included in the FRU list.  I beleive the one you're looking for is the 04X0115 but please double-check that.

It looks like it can be ordered here https://www-304.ibm.com/shop/europe/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/default/CategoryDisplay?catalogId=-376... .  The Google may have other sources.

All that said, I've never done an unlit to lit keyboard swap.  I believe that it is only necessary to do the swap without other mods, but haven't actually tried it.

Hi all, I'm happy to be one of this community ! My problem began when my labtop's fan didn't work any more, so I went to the HP represinter in my local area for warranty service. After few days I recived my labtop, and I noticed the keyboard backlight is not work. For now, is there any quick fix for this issue? I know I can go back to HP represinter again but it will take time , I'll make it the last solution.  Thanks in advance .

Hello friends at the Dell Forum,
I have an Inspiron 13-7359 and I'd like to disable the keyboard backlight so it's off all the time.  When I turn it off in Mobiliy Center, it turns itself on after reboot or sleep.  Any help would be appreciated.

Hey! I got a Lenovo y50 about a month ago, no touch screen or UHD screen, and all of a sudden the keyboard backlight went out. I restarted my computer and it does not fix the problem. Please help!!

Answer:Lenovo y50 keyboard backlight

Hi otts2222,

Welcome to Lenovo forums

As I understood that you are facing the issue with backlit keypad not working on your Lenovo Y50 laptop.

Try to increase the brightness of backlit by press function key (fn) and spacebar.

Also try to update the power management tool.

Click here to download the power management tool.

Hope this helps! Do post us back for further queries.

Best regards,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

You are doing the Correct trigger for the Keyboard Backlight,
This system seems to have 2 Configuration of the keyboard some non Backlit and some does have backlit.

i suggest calling Technical Team first and verify the keyboard type on this model.
Or Call  Sales Team and Verify your order.
