The wattage and type of the AC adapter cannot be determined

Question: The wattage and type of the AC adapter cannot be determined

I am getting this error message. My battery is not charging. And it is clocking my cpu speed to 0.5 GHz. I heard that there is a pin in the DC jack that tells a chip on the computer to tell the computer that the AC adapter is not suitable (whether damage or low wattage). I'm wondering if there is a way to disable the chip and just use it at full speed, I don't really need a battery because I'm mainly on AC use anyways.

Preferred Solution: The wattage and type of the AC adapter cannot be determined

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: The wattage and type of the AC adapter cannot be determined

Mine will do that if the plug is not all the way in. It has happened to me twice now and I would have thought it would take more than 1/16th of an inch to cause the situation.
Sorry I don't know of a way to bypass this check.

Ok, I have read through these forums, and others, and have been unable to resolve this issue after trying like a million things. Here's my issue:
This is on a Dell Inspiron N4030 running Windows 8 Pro with Bios Revision A07.
On boot-up I get this message:
"The AC power adapter wattage and type cannot be determined.
The battery may not charge.
The system will adjust the performance to match the power available.
Please connect a Dell 65W AC adapter or greater for the best system performance.
Strike the F3 key (before F1 or F2 key) if you do not want to see this power warning message again.
Strike the F1 key to continue, F2 to run the setup utility."

If I strike F2 and go into the bios it says "AC adapter type    unknown"
If I strike F1 to continue boot-up it boots into windows and then the battery indicator shows "Plugged in, Not charging"

In attempting to fix this issue I have:

1. Replaced the battery.
2. Replaced the motherboard
3. Replaced the Power Board
4. Swapped out the adapter with several other Dell adapters we have in the house (we have 6 Dell laptops). Adapter revisions used are A00, A01, and A02.
5. Did the whole rigamarole here:
6. Tried various combinations of plugging/unplugging at different intervals and at different speeds that I have read on multiple sites.
7. Reset the Bios by disconnecting the battery and AC adapter and the hold... Read more

This is a common problem (I see lots of posts)
The problem source is the [Dell] AC adapter.  PA-21 Family, 65W, P/N: NX061.  It is made in China.
I have an XPS M1330.  Using Dell after warranty service, replaced the Mother Board twice, replaced the battery twice, replaced the AC adapter twice - not fixing it.
Turns out the power warning message is very informative.  It states "Please connect a Dell 65W AC adapter or greater for best system performance".  So, I plugged in my Dell 95W adapter - WOW Problem Solved.
A lab test of my new Dell 65W AC adapter shows it to be 64.6 watts.  If this unit gets hot (like after several hours of use), it may not put out the full 65 watts - the system may not recognize the adapter, it may power the system ok, but won't charge the battery.
These units burn out after only a few months of use. Their cables are too fragile. If Dell's or their supplier's Quality Control can't produce a reliable 65W product - I found seveal "Made In USA" universal adapters.

Answer:AC Adapter - Alert - "AC power adapter wattage and type cannot be determined"

Well my solution was simple.
I just removed the battery pack and powered up my notebook. Then I turned off the notebook replaced the battery pack and VOILA. The error message was gone.

Have the following 2 symptoms:

When turning it on, I get an error from BIOS which says AC type and wattage can't be determined and thus battery won't charge.
I have a spare battery which when inserted shows that is is 62% charged. But even with that, if I pull the power cord, the laptop doesn't stay on.

I have seen few posts regarding updating BIOS which I did. Doesn't seem to make a difference. Any suggestions.
This symptom started happening on this laptop at least 2 months ago when the laptop was in warranty. Unfortunately, I was a little late in calling Dell and the awesome Dell support says it is 25 days out of warranty so won't fix anything :-( So much for my 6th Dell laptop.

The AC adapter and wattage cannot be determined.
The system performance is unpredictable.
Please connect a Dell 180 Watt adapter and restart.
Or press F1 and continue.
It has the AC Addapter in use that came with the PC and has worked OK until now and still seems to be working OK.
I have been to the UK Dell site and I was going to email them unfortunately I cant as the first thing they want to know is the TAG Number and its not recognized. The PC is three weeks old and is registered.
I googled this and it seems to be common with laptops this is a desktop any advice would be appreciated.

Dell Battery Charging Problem Complicated
Could be one of those “Mother Board” Fixes but how can we get to the bottom of this?
The question is what allows the computer to determine the adapter wattage and type?
What part can I buy and rework on the board? Honestly the computer works fine minus this part.

I had to replace the power cord (from the outlet to the box) on my AC adapter. It worked fine for awhile; but now I'm getting this message on boot up. "Warning. The AC adapter type cannot be determined. This will prevent optimal system performance. Please check AC adapter is connected properly. Remove AC adapter and plug it in again." I tried plugging it in again several times to no avail. Then my virus program (Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security 14) popped up a window to start in Safe Mode to fix the problem. I know how to start in Safe Mode but don't know what to do once I'm in there. Any help will be appreciated.

So.. I see this problem has been posted about before, so I just wanna know what my options are.
This problem actually popped up on me a few months ago, but I was able to remove and insert the power cord a few times and the message would go away and I would be able to charge my battery. But as a month or two passed, it became more finicky, and I had to jiggle with it a little more, but still, I was able to charge my battery and use my laptop wire-free.
Now today, I've been trying all day, and cannot for the life of me get the battery to charge. I get the following message when I plug the wire in.
"The AC power adapter type cannot be determined. Your system will operate slower and the battery will not charge. Please connect a Dell 65W AC adapter or higher for best system operation."
Also, I think its worth nothing that a lot of people mention that this error message comes up while they are booting their Laptops, mine only comes up once Vista is loaded and I attempt to reinsert the cord.
So, I have tried another Dell charger, a 90W one, and the same problem does occur (My original is a 65W). I am planning on getting a different battery tomorrow to see if it is the battery, as this ones usable life was getting quite low, down to barely a half hour per full charge. My warranty, although I'm not sure of the specifics, was not expired when this problem first came up, but is now expired by I would say 2 months at the most.

Awhile ago, I started getting this error message when I started up my computer (after the initial Dell screen). It stated:

The AC adapter type cannot be determined. This will prevent optimal system performance.

Strike the F3 key (before the F1 or F2 key) if you do not want to see power warning messages again.

Strike the F1 key to continue, F2 to run the set up utility.

I ignored this problem for awhile by just hitting F1. However, within the last month, it has gotten worse. Instead of this error message coming up when I started my computer - after the initial Dell screen, nothing would come up except a little flashing line in the top left hand corner of the screen, and the computer would not start up passed that. I proceeded to fiddle with the plug that I plug into my laptop from adapter. I would push it harder into the laptop and/or twist it in after I hit the start up button, waiting to see if, after the initial Dell screen, I could get the error message to come up again so I could hit F1 so my computer would actually start up. I really don't know if any of that helped, but I figure if it was the adapter, then I should try something like that. I even blew it the plug and into the socket in the laptop tonight. However, tonight, I almost could not get the computer to start up all the way - I kept getting the screen with the little blinking line after the initial Dell screen and no error message. Eventually, after trying several times, I did get the error ... Read more

Dell Inspiron 5755 with a 17" display, running windows 10 and the latest BIOS version from Dell(as of 3/2/2017). AC adapter power supply is a 45W, 19.5V, 2.31A, Dell power supply. When running on battery for a while and the battery low window pops up, I plug in the power supply and immediately get a message "The AC adapter power type cannot be determined. As I unplug and plug in the power supply while the Dell Power Manager is up, I can see the word "charging" displayed in the management window for a bit, but then it disappears. The battery Icon itself shows that the power supply is plugged in as it displays a male electrical plug. If I remove the battery the laptop powers up fine. The BIOS in this machine does not display the charging device information, just that the battery is 100% normal. While in BIOS I hit the F9 key to reset basic bios functions to no avail. My Dell Inspiron 6400 HDD damaged without any warning last week and cannot be repaired, so i had to replace it with another HDD. Everything works fine after that except that when i plugged in my AC adapter, the power warning message “The AC power adapter type cannot be determined. Your system will operate slower and the battery will not charge. Please connect a Dell 65W AC adapter or higher for best system operation" will appear, and my battery will not charge.

Previously this power warning message will occur only when i didn't plug in properly and it worked fine after i replug the adapter. Since i changed my HDD, this warning message appears everytime i turn on my laptop. I tried updating the BIOS but it doesn't help, the problem is still there. I suspect that my AC adapter is damaged but when i tried it with another Inspiron 6400, it worked fine without the warning message appearing, that shows that there isn't any problem with my AC adapter..

Any solutions for this? I hope i don't have to change the motherboard or whatsoever, because my laptop is out of warranty. Is it something to do with the configuration? - since i formatted my computer and reinstalled everything..

thanks heaps for any comments!

Answer:Power adapter type cannot be determined after replacing new HDD

You may have a damaged DC jack in the laptop if the adapter works on another laptop, which would go with you replugging the power adapter to clear the error in the past. Its not uncommon for the jacks to break from the motherboard and require re-soldering, in some cases the jacks crack or break and need to replaced. To get at the jack you will need to have the laptop completely disassembled.

P.S. 'spoiled' isn't not the correct term to use with failed electronics.

I'm using an XPS 13 9350, and 'm currently having an issue whereby when I start up my laptop I'm receiving the error message.
"AC power adapter and type cannot be determined, the battery may mot charge, the system will adjust the performance to match the power available"
The laptop sticks at 1% and wont charge. Although the light is still on the adapter, the light does not appear at the front of the laptop where it would usually indicate charging, apart from occasionally brief moments before the laptop boots following pressing the on button.
I have forced the latest BIOS update past the 10% battery block, however this has not helped.
I've had the laptop and adapter roughly a year.
Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Answer:Dell XPS 13 9350 - AC power adapter and type could not be determined

If "roughly" is less than a year, call Dell for warranty repair.
If it's over a year, first thing to try is a new OEM Dell AC adapter -- most computer shops should have one you can try.  If that fixes it, replace the AC adapter.  If not, replace the DC power jack:
And if that doesn't solve it, it's the charge circuit itself that's bad -- replace the mainboard.

Hi! I don't know what's the cause of my problem and will be appreciated for any info.
Suddenly, I started getting this message, when I turn my laptop on. It won't recognize my AC adapter, and won't charge the battery.
I have Dell Inspiron 6400/1505, windows XP.
I tried to flash BIOS, took out and put back in the battery. Check the plug, it looks ok. Battery's LED lights show it works fine.
I saw that so many people have this problem, but did not find any ways to solve it. Or any reasons why it happened. If anybody knows what to do, please share with us regular PC users.

Hello, from few days a have problem with my AC power adapter. My system says: "The AC power adapter type cannot be determined... lalalala" when my Windows says Plugged in, not charging. CPU performance does not exceed 0,78GHz.I tried to uninstall the drivers - nothing.
I tried update my BIOS - nothing.
Replace AC - nothing
Exclude malfunctioning AC adapter.
Sometimes after a few connections begins to charge my battery, and it is a day where you do not try to charge.
But I found a solution, which is always charge my battery.
when i turn off the system, and then pulled out the battery. I push the button 'power on' for 10 seconds. And then I put back the battery and plug the charger. I turn on the system and everything works.
But once again, disconnect and plug the charger that stops charging

Where is the problem?

Answer:The AC power adapter type cannot be determined. Inspiron 15 3542

Are you using an original Dell OEM Adapter? When you plug in the adapter to the system, does the adapter stay firm or does it fall off easily? Is the adapter frayed? Is there any damage on the system?
Restart the system and press f2 key to enter BIOS - check the adapter status in BIOS with and without the adapter plugged in. Also, wiggle the adapter cable at the end and see if the status changes in BIOS at any point. Check the battery health in BIOS (if applicable).
Restart the system and press f12 key on startup - choose diagnostics. Let it run the diags and if you encounter any errors - make a note of the complete error and report the same to us.These are onboard diagnostics and they might possible pick some error if the hardware is not functional.
Since you have replaced the adapter, if the battery has good health, then then next part to be replaced would be the dc port - you would need this part -
If nothing works, the motherboard might be at fault.

For the last two weeks, every time I start my Dell INSPIRON E1705 while using the power supply I am greeted with the following message. "The AC power adapter type cannot be determined. Your system will operate slower and the battery will not charge. Please connect a Dell 90W AC adapter or higher for best system operation". I press the F1 Key and everything works fine. I've read about this on other websites and most say it's a design flaw in the power supply after the cord has been properly wound around the supply as designed. Apparently a few of the cords internal wire strands become broken and cause this message. My computer is from June 2006 and shouldn't be having this issue so early...or ever. This seems like a flaw that should have created some type of manufacturers recall since so many people are having this issue. I'm of course out of warranty, will Dell replace this free of charge?

Answer:Power Supply - "The AC power adapter type cannot be determined....."

You are correct, the failure is due toloss of the power supply ID signal. Sometimes this happens because of strain on the plug, which breaks the signal wire. Some even are so severe that the insulation breaks away from the plug; this is due to rough handling. The other cause is one or more of the power socket solder connections to the system board become broken. This also is related to severe handling. I have seen one case where all three power connections and three of four mechanical connections were disconnected. If the power supply is bad, a replacement will cure the problem. If not, then the socket is bad, and this will require a system board replacement. If you are experienced, you can try to resolder the connections. I am experienced and was not able to get my daughter's E6000 to work by resoldered. More recent Dells are using a replacable power connection board which is a much cheaper repair.

I have an Inspiron 5758 (Win 10, original Dell AC adapter, 45W, no appearance of damage on male or female end, though truth be told, those are very small/hard to see well).  In the past when I've unplugged my laptop, if I don't plug it in almost immediately again, but run the battery a for a little while, when I plug the AC adapter back in, I get the old "plugged in, not charging" indicator in my taskbar. In the past when this has occurred I've followed various temporary solutions to get it return to "plugged in, charging," esp. the ubiquitous 12 step method of turning off/unplugging/removing battery/uninstall in Device manager/etc...  Sometime just unplugging and plugging back in repetitively works.
But now, none of that works.  After draining a battery to about 25%, I plugged it back in, and got  a "plugged in, charging" indicator for about 20 seconds and then a reversion to "plugged in, not charging."
In addition, I get the following message upon start up, "Alert!  The AC power adapter cannot be determined,. The battery may not charge. I recently got a T440p. The laptop came with a 135W adapter. I would like to order an additional adapter. When I search for compatible adapters on Lenovo's site by entering my model number, it lists 65W, 90W, 135W, and 170W adapters. What would be the consequence of using an adapter lower than 135W (which the laptop came with)? Slower charges? Reduced CPU speed? I imagine the lower wattage adapters would work since Lenovo lists them in the store when I searched for my machine. The machine has a quad core CPU and a discreet graphics card. Thanks.

Go to Solution.

Answer:T440p Using Lower Wattage AC Adapter

Hello. You can run your machine on lighter to normal operations on a 90W adapter, and the CPU should operate normally in a majority of situations. However, if the discrete graphics are being used as well, it will reduce the functionality / slow down the charging of your machine, and that is certainly not an optimal situation for a powerful laptop such as you've got. You need a 135W adapter to run it at full capacity. Period. I got a spruced up T440p myself as well as a 170W W520, and I would never cut corners when choosing an adapter for them.

Quick Question. I have a y560 with a quad i7 Q740.  Looking for an extra power adapter.  I know you can run into problems if you don't match up the Voltage properly, but will you have problems if the Wattage is low? The stock adapter runs at 120 W 19.5V 6.15A I've seen some decently priced replacements at 19.5V & 90W. Don't want to damage my machine. Thanks!

I recently picked up a Lenovo Yoga 13 as so far I am loving it.  The power brick that comes with the computer is rated for 65W.  I have a Kensingtom universal power brick that I beleive I can get an adapter to fit the Yoga.  My Kensington power brick is rated at 120W. Here are my questions.  Would it be ok to use the larger wattage power brick? Would it cause any problems with the system in the long run or affect the life span of the battery?  Would using an aftermarket power brick have any affect on the warranty? The Lenovo power brick is the one that I will almost always use.  It stays plugged in at my desk.  The Kensington power brick lives in my computer bag and is only used when traveling.

Answer:Power Adapter wattage question

Hi Fargo,
regarding wattage of AC adapter/ power supply/ charger/ power brick... the more, the better... no problem at all.
But the voltage used is most important, in case of the IdeaPad Yoga 13 it must be 20V DC (+/- 5%)
and the adapter must have the appropriate type/ size plug with correct polarity,
proper voltage and polarity information can be found printed on the OEM AC adapter.
Hope this info helps... Zehn

Hi. Recently the cable on my power adapter broke and I replaced. I got a 90w one, and then I turned on my computer it said something like "Your system will run slower, and the battery will charge slower, unless you start using a 130w power adapter".

The problem is, everythings fine, except that I cant connect to the internet, or to my home network at all. I looked in device manager and theres a bunch of exclamation points next to most of the network adaptors.

Would i be right in assuming if I just bought a 130 w power adapter this problem would be solved? Or have I doen some sortve damage just by plugging in the 90 w one.

Or is there some way I can get the 90 w one working?

Answer:Wrong wattage power adapter. Now internets not working.

This Lenovo W530 Workstation, Windows 7 64-bit OS (W530) is less than five months old, and I'm now getting this error message when my W530 boots up :  The connected AC adapter has a lower wattage than the recommended model which was shipped with the system. To boot with the AC adapter, please connect the AC adapter which was shipped with the system. Furthemore, the battery levels drops at a constant rate. I have read another Lenovo thread regarding this same issue with the Lenovo W520 Workstation. The temporary, non-techie fix is to unplug the AC Adapter (170W 20V) for about half a minute and replug it. The Lenovo Batter stops being drained (AC power directly from the wall electrical outlet). I'm not sure where to start  - is it a faulty AC adapter, battery, power managment drive issue, and/or worse a bios issue? Thanks for the help,Darren

I am planning on making this project myself but first I have one question. Here is the project I will be making:

It says I need a 12V DC supply for powering the breadboard. When searching up for 12V DC supplies, I only get power supply's that plug into the wrong wall socket (I live in Australia).
Do I need to get something like the article suggests:

Or can I get something such as this:
If the first option is the only possibility, how do I get the plug to go into my wall socket?
Also, how do I get the other end plugged into the breadboard when the product just has a single plug on the end?

Answer:What type of power adapter do I need?

You can use the Ebay adaptor, the easiest way to get 2 wires is to get a socket that fits the plug, like this one :- and solder 2 wires to that socket.

The circuit at your link uses a 2 wire plug into the breadboard, you would have to get a similar plug OR you could push bare wires into the breadboard.

OR you could cut the plug off to reveal the 2 wires but they will probably be quite thin and may not connect well if pushed into the breadboard holes.

I have a Yoga Pro 3 I purchased here in the US a couple of months ago.  This summer I'll be moving to Moldova (eastern Europe) with the Peace Corps and plan to take my Yoga with me. Moldova has 220-240V Type C power outlets.  Ideally, I'd like to purchase a power adapter for my Yoga that is already configured with a Type C plug.  The US Lenovo customer service staff can't seem to tell me if I can buy one. I know Germany also uses Type C but I don't see the option to buy the 40W power adapter on their site. The below adapter is available on the UK site but I'm not sure UK adapters are compatible with Type C outlets: Does anyone out there who travels to Europe or owns a Yoga Pro 3 in Europe have any tips on buying a native adapter?  If I need to use a convertor I will... I'm just trying to cut down on the accessories I have to carry with me.

Hello! I've been around here for a sometimes but never registered as a users because I find all the solution I needed, but I have one follow problems that I can't solve and I need sevenforum's help!

I recently bought Sapphire Radeon HD 6770 and comparing game performance with my old graphic card Nvidia 9800 GT, I don't see much of a difference. According to my friend who builds computer, he said it's suppose to be superior differences between those 2 graphic cards. I also tried to sign up for BETA profile for Blizzard game series and apparently it kept detecting the Radeon HD 4200, which is my integrated card. Anyways, my question is, how can I change my Adapter Type? I posted a picture of it so you guys can see what's my problem is. I have the latest Catalyst Control Panel from the sites sticky thread .

I don't know how to check my computer stuff, so here's my computer on website: HP - Pavilion Desktop / AMD Athlon™ II Processor / 4GB Memory / 750GB Hard Drive - p6654y

My english is my second language so if you can't understand what I said I'll be glad to explain again lol. Rough draft xD.

I've already tried Driver Sweeper, failed on me .

I don't know what BIOS means either lol.

If my integrated graphic card is disabled for good, I think I might get to see my 6770's full performance. Also tried overclocking, didn't helped at all :[. I still think it's my integrated card's problem, but hey I could be wrong. I'm terrible at computers .

Answer:Changing a video card adapter type help.

Assuming HP didn't hide the option in the bios (and I wouldn't put it past them), have a good look around likely in the Advanced section under Chipset. If it is don't disable it quite yet, first boot back to Windows and uninstall the AMD driver through Programs and Features using the Catalyst Install Manager. Then restart and go into the bios and disable, and re-install the AMD driver using the latest,

Latest AMD Catalyst Video Driver for Windows 7

unless that is the one you already have.

P.S. What you're seeing shouldn't happen, but with the way HP likes to hide/disable/monkey around in general with bios settings I'm not really surprised that it did. When it works properly (the AMD onboard video with an AMD video card) you can actually use both at the same time for running up to 4 (or 5 depending on video card) monitors at a time.

I have fully upgraded windows 10 and all the latest drivers from Acer support pages installed to my Aspire S5-371.When I'm trying to connect a display into type-c USB-port using a type-c/HDMI adapter, windows shows an error message "Display connection is limited" and by clicking it, it opens following web site: I tried 2 different type-c/HDMI adapters with same results. Answer:S5-371 dual display issue with type-c adapter

The end of the M$ note says "The hardware and software on the system, the device or adapter, or cable does not support the DisplayPort /DockPort or MHL alternate modes." Now since a regular USB port works (2.0 even) for DisplayPort that leaves MHL. Maybe you need one of these.

Is there a way for a Windows 10 firewall rule to determine what network adapter is in use? Can it differentiate between Wi-Fi, TAP, Ethernet, etc.?
Poking around Windows Firewall for the first time, I don't see any settings related to network adapter, but I wonder if the "local IP address" settings could be useful. Would the different adapters show up as different local IP addresses, in some way that is consistent enough to make a rule out of it?

The Spectre x2 12 detachable is capable of charging through the two Type-C USB ports. The HP Type-C USB adapter charges using these two ports. However, no third party Type-C USB chargers (even with Power Delivery specifications) will charge this device. Meaning, there is no benefit to charging via Type-C since this device can only use the HP adapter charger. Another HP device that charges via Type-C USB, the Spectre 13.3 (HP Spectre 13-v151nr), received a BIOS update (F.26 Rev.A; sp77130.exe) in August that allows charging through third party Type C-USB chargers like Google and Apple chargers (see below in yellow;"- Expands support for the USB Type-C adaptor."). I am requesting a similar Type-C charging adapter BIOS update for the HP Spectre x2 - 12-a008nr, to remove the limitation described above. Not allowing to be charged through Type C chargers manufactured by Google and Apple is absurd. If you would please,  use the Power Delivery specifications that these reputable vendors use, and that you also used for the 13.3, and allow this device to truly be fantastic. My Dell XPS 13 has recently been unable to recognize my AC adapter. I've tried several outlets and chargers, but to no avail. Once I plug the charger into the laptop, the charging light on my Dell lights up for a second but turns off immediately after.
I am unable to get past the Dell SupportAssist and it seems to be an endless loop that won't allow me into my desktop.

ThinkPad AC chargers are designed to work with input voltages from 110VAC to 240VAC so the charger that's shipped with your E570 will be just fine. If your new E570 was bought in the UK then yes, you'll need a G to F adapter to fit local power outlets.

Normally when you insert a pccard into the slot you should feel a slight resistance at the end. After that the ejection pin pops out. also a card should fit in there completely. Now if i test a working pccard (32 bits gold connector) in this r500, it can not fit it in there completely. Also there is no resistance or connection. It will slide in loosely and does not connect. The last centimeter of the card will not fit in the adapter. No new device is found. I tested this in linux as well in windows7. I conclude the physical connection  between the card and the adapter is not there. So perhaps this is a hardware flaw ? Or perhaps i am missing something obvious.if i look closely into the slot, i can see there is a metal pin at the left side deep inside the slot, wich blocks access to the connection pins. It prevents my cards from beeing inserted completely. * I wonder if anyone has found this same problem.* also has anyone found a normal userguide for his laptop ? (r500 2714) i can only find the Hardware maintenance and safetey manuals. Thanks for your responses.

Answer:r500 2714 pcmcia/cardbus type i/ii adapter does not work.

Aha, the metal pin blocking access is released when the grey releasebutton is in the 'ejected' state. Now i can fit the pccard type in there. (32 bit pcmcia) These have a gold plated connector on the card and has the word pccard on it.the old style 16 bit cards dont seem to fit. Maybe this info will help other users. Still i would like to see a r500 usermanual in wich i cold have read this * Does anyone know where to find the usermanual ? regards

I have an XPS 12 9250 with an external Dell Adapter USB Type C to HDMI/VGA/Ethernet/USB 470-ABQN.  This adapter is working for Ethernet and VGA, but the USB port is not working.  I suspect that I need the correct drivers installed.  When I plug in my windows phone or my android phone, both devices show that they are charging, but windows 10 does not indicate that it sees the devices.  If I plug in an external keyboard to the adapter's USB port, windows 10 does not react, and the keyboard lights do not come on (keyboard works fine on 2 other computers).
So, I'm pretty sure I've installed all the latest drivers that are listed on for the xps 12 9250, but it's hard to tell as there seem to be scores of them.
Is anyone else having this problem?  Can anyone tell me which specific drivers I need to get USB working?  Thank you

Just a question on, i suppose you would call it "networking theory"

How is throughput determined? For example, my connection to my router is 100meg up and down, but my router's connection to the internet is only 1.5/.5 meg. How does the router control the rate of transmission from my machine to match (or at least approximate), that of it's speed? Even simpler, how does a connection know that it has reached a saturation point somewhere along the link between sender and reciever? Is it a hardware level (along the level of MACs) or something higher, such as TCP that handles this?

I recently moved to NYC and have subscribed to Time Warner for the internet service.
Today using a new laptop to login my Facebook account, I got a email from Facebook saying
Operating System: Windows 7
Browser: Firefox
Location: Herndon, VA, US (IP=xxxx:xxxx:xxxx:xxx:xxx:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx)
OS and Brower are correct. Even the IP is correct (Google's find_your_IP_address shows the same address). But why is it "located" in VA?
And if I use another site to find out my IP (e.g., it shows a "different" IP (all numbers, whereas Facebook and Google detect an alphanumeric IP). The IP shown by whatismyipaddress is located in NYC.
Hopefully I am just being paranoid, but why would Faceook/Google detect an IP that is in VA ?? Am I being hacked? And why would another IP detection website locate my IP to be in NY ??
Any insight will be appreciated. Thank you.

Answer:How is IP address determined ?

How is entropy and bits determined?

if my password has 10 characters, then:
95 ^ 10 - 59,873,693,923,837,894,000 [with symbols]
62 ^ 10 - 839,299,365,868,340,200 [lower&upper case+numbers]
26 ^ 10 - 141,167,095,653,376 [lower/upper case only]
10 ^ 10 - 10,000,000,000 [numbers]

Thus, even a 5 character pw is secure as the size of the pool of characters is very large.

How does 2^128(bits) relate to this? 2 of what? 2 bits, 1 or 0?

AMT pin has 4 digits. That is only 10^4 = 10000

<t3 Q%f#8S
Entropy: 48.3 bits
close to
Entropy: 45.7 bits

Entropy: 41 bits

better and less to type than

Length: 20
Entropy: 36.8 bits

but finally:
y~g1 bTehQ xPr4j1>)p9Z%u}
Length: 25
Strength: Very Strong
Entropy: 130.4 bits
Charset Size: 93 characters
pw length: 8
Speed: 10m/sec
# comps: 10
up to 28 months [2.3years].

Cool. Thus proving an 8 character pw is more than secure against anyone not hooking up 1000 PCs.

First of all, thanks to everyone who helps out on this forum. I'll forwarn you that these logs will not be pretty.

Rootkit has been persistent for 2 weeks. Infected my old laptop to the point where I finally agreed to have my boyfriend buy me a new one as an early bday present. My router transmitted the rootkit to my new laptop. : ( (there's no other explanation - no flash drives/externals/etc).

I am a freelance writer and this is now seriously impacting my job. Sounds dumb, but. I wiped using Kill Disk. Reformatted. Took to a repair shop where the guy didn't believe me apparently, he wiped the disk and reformatted and assured me it was gone. It wasn't.

It adapts. Gmer/Combofix/Runhooker all catch it. Everything else - Malwarebytes & all the big AV's - don't. Bit Defender caught one trojan in an online scan.

I've investigated this stupid thing for long enough to learn a few things. A, it actually boots from "\device\multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\windows". Guessing that's a virtual drive which is why nothing detects it.

Another interesting fact - the cmd.exe prompt, located in the windows\system32 folder, actually routes to a WinNT (that's part of the trojan, the hidden WinNt logins) command line. When I type in "bootcfg /?" it specifically lists commands, one of which references whistler. Heh. (It has the WinNt command strings vs the XP command strings I get in recovery console.... Read more

I've got one on the bench now that was loaded with crap that I pretty much have taken care of EXCEPT... Altnet.exe. Spybot finds it but cannot remove it because it's in memory. I allow it to run on the next boot, it finds it again but still can't get rid of it. SO,... then I try booting up in safe mode hoping it won't find it's way into memory but, of course, it does. I also ran SuperAntiSpyware and it still remains. When I do reboot, I get this cryptic message that a registry key or something had to be recovered and the recovery was successful. I'm sure that means "you tried to get rid of me but here I am...". Anyone out there have any sure-fire methods of getting rid of this pest? Thanks!

I have tried this many times and I am missing something so need help, scenario is: A 80486 comp, can't get to the specs of the mobo, comps runs good, installed Win95 on it, runs fine on my LAN with its ISA NIC, have plenty of older ISA modem, Zooltrix FM9628, Cardinal 3250 56k for exemple, no jumpers. I usually find their drivers, install them, then will get the message there is no modem detected. I use Modem from Control Panel to install the modem, direct Windows to the driver files, it will install the modem, then when I try to do the diag test, the modem is not responding, the modem usually installs on Com2, I am not sure how to tell it to go on an other com port if that would solve something.

I am usually told to forget about that has ISA modem, Win95, 80486 are a horrific combinaison. It might be true, but I somehow don't beleive it can't be done. I am not genned in on the ins and out what is preventing me from getting that handled.

Any help would be really cool.

Answer:Stubbornly determined to install this ISA modem

I had the same problem with a lucent winmodem in a laptop. Is the modem itself okay? Have you checked to see if there are conflicts? You can go into Bios and see whtehr it tells you which port the modem SHOULD be on but that might not be the right one. Check what the IRQ is and see if that tallys with what you're getting in device manager for the modem after you install it.

I never did solve the lucent--I just bought a pcmcia card modem and done--it did the job.

I understand some of the power options pretty well when I'm logged in and at my own desktop: Screen, disk activity times, sleep mode, etc. I know how to change them. But what determines which of these options are in use when logged out and at the login screen?
Is it the set of options that were in place for the last person who logged out? Or...???
Thank you.

Answer:When logged OUT, how are power options determined?

The last set of options selected when a user was logged in are used when no one is logged in (remember, power settings are per machine, not per user - if a user sets power options, those are the options per machine until changed).

Answer:RegScrub XP....'User Determined Problems'

As far as I know they are unused registry keys. I have never had any problem with RegScrub XP, and always select all keys and let the program delete them. A restore point is automatically created in any case.

I was looking at some graphic cards and I came across these.

My card:

Chipset:GeForce 6600 GT
Memory: 128MB
DX Version:9.0c
Core Speed:500MHz
Memory Speed:1000MHz
Bus Width: 128bit
Pixel Pipelines/TMU:8x1

And here's the other:

Chipset:GeForce 6800GT
Memory: 256MB
DX Version:9.0c
Core Speed:350MHz
Memory Speed:1000MHz
Bus Width:256bit
Pixel Pipelines/TMU:16x1

Now just by looking at the 6800GT with its memory, bus width, and pipelines, it's obviously a better card. But I noticed that the 6600GT has a faster Core speed. Is that better than the 6800GTs? And could you help explain a little to me? Thanks.

Answer:How GREAT graphic cards are determined..

The 6600's core is a simpler chip so can run at a higher clock speed, the 6800 is still faster, the 6600 would have to run at 700MHz to equal it.

Hi there,

My site has been attacked constantly in my shared server 1and1 and despite me cleaning the scripts from some files in the server, strong passwording all my accounts (including email ones) and spending all day yesterday hunting the cause (online antivirus scanners, running full scans from Malwarebytes, Microsoft Security Essentials and System Protect from Advanced System Optimizer), I keep getting the following message from Malwarebytes: Successfully blocked access to a potentially malicious website: (it?s a russian IP and it varies a bit, of course) type: outgoing, port:49690 (this also varies) and process: iexplore.exe or firefox.exe (depending on what browser I use). I run Windows 7 Ultimate x64, so GMER log came blank.

Please, DO help me find the problem inside my computer, PLEASE!!!!!

Does anyone know how MS determines the status of an update? I have a patch deployment appliance which uses Lumension to analyze patches, but there is a disconnect between what they see and what MS sees. Windows updates has patches such as KB2533552 or KB2868116 that show up as Important updates, but Lumension says they are just recommended. I assume that it is because there are no bulletins posted for those patches (search for them here Microsoft Security Bulletins ? Updates & News), but I don't know if that is true. Does anyone know about this?

Answer:How is criticality of Windows updates determined?

Note that there is a difference between Security ratings and non-security ratings.

Note the following articles apply to the two patches above..
Updates are available that improve the content in warning messages that you receive when you run local executable files in Windows
An update that prevents a "0xC0000034" error message when you try to install Windows 7 SP1, Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, or Windows Embedded Standard 7 SP1 is available

Neither are Security patches

I suspect that Lumension may be applying their own system, and perhaps downgrading based on their own evaluation.
The KB2533552 patch is one which really only applies to RTM - any machine produced since SP1 released would have had that installed already. It's really only application in limited circumstances, but MS pushed it out to everyone to reduce further support problems.
The KB286116 is really only a cosmetic thing - but it can make troubleshooting a lot easier.

There seems to be almost no correlation to performance - 5 bars could be a 100+ Mbps connection, or it could be < 5 Mbps... On the other hand, 4, 3, 2, and 1 bars all mean that the connection is going to be flaky and unstable

Answer:How are the wifi connectivity bars determined?

I may be wrong but I think the bars are for the signal strength and not the speed of the connection.

I recently installed win 8 on new clean 1Tb hdd but forgot to firstly disconnect the second 250Gb hdd disk #0, so the OS ended up on disk #1. I then disconnected the 250Gb drive and reinstalled Win 8 on the 1Tb drive. I then checked Disk Management and found, as I thought, that the 1Tb drive was now disk #0.
However, when I reconnected the 250Gb drive and then checked Disk Management again I found that the 1Tb drive had reverted to disk #1 and the 250Gb to disk #0. I would prefer that my 1Tb C:\ drive be disk #0. Could I achieve this by swapping the SATA connections on the HDDs or on the motherboard?
Help appreciated.

Answer:Is HDD disk# determined by mobo sata socket?

Hello Pedro,

Yes, that would be correct. Whatever the SATA port number the disk is connected to will be the disk #.

So I have been using iTunes for years (hate it with a passion though). Few weeks back this laptop had a bad case of malware/viruses. Eventually got rid of all that, now the laptop refuses to allow any method of fixing my iPod problem. Which goes a little like this...

The iPod won't show in My Computer...until I disconnect it and then the iPod symbol appears as a drive for about a second. I have tried every method on the Apple website, but it always leads to a dead end because when I get a screen with a progress bar updating driver etc, the progress bar just goes on forever, until I unplug the ipod! Then obviously the device disappears from Device Manager so I can't change the bloody driver!

The iPod appears as a USB mass storage device, and also sometimes as a Portable Device.

It's not an issue with iTunes, it's definitely a Vista driver/file issue somewhere.

Any ideas? I'll happily supply an extra info.

What is infuruiating is how the iPod appears in device manager but won't let me change the Microsoft driver to an Apple one (as this would certainly fix the issue).

I think the problem is changing the iPod from a USB Mass Storage Device to what it actually is, an Apple Ipod.

Answer:Argh! Laptop is determined to not work with my ipod!

This part of your comments says a lot.

If the infection was that bad, it's probably damaged the operating system.

You might want to consider a repair or reinstall of Vista.

Hi. Running Win 7 Professional 32bit machine. I have up-to-date versions of IE10, Firefox and Chrome.

If I go to HTML5 Demo: geolocation using Firefox and Chrome and confirm that I want to share my location, both browsers successfully show the map.

IE10, however, fails. The failure is immediate. This also occurs on my colleague's machine too running a Win 7 Professional 64bit machine. It's not only on this site either. I only noticed it wasn't working because I'm coding a Javascript geolocation service and, while checking cross-browser compatibility, it failed on that too. The error is "current position could not be determined'.

I've checked the IE options, taken it in and out of protected mode, and ensured that "Never allow websites to request your physical location" is unchecked, but it still won't work. There don't appear to be any issues raised anywhere else on the internet, so I'm assuming this is an isolated incident, which makes it more of a problem I suppose. Is there something I'm missing?

cheers, and TIA.

Seems the most straight forward thing to try is reset or possibly use No add-ons mode,
No Add-ons mode/ Click the Start button and type in the search box,
Internet explorer
Click on the suggestion or it’s located at,
Start/ All programs/ Accessories folder/ System tools folder/ No add-ons.
Check the box to Delete personal settings.
Post what Security suite you have installed and also the other computer.
