I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a new T540p running Windows 10 with a factory installed Sierra Wireless EM7355, Qualcomm Gobi 4G LTE/HSPA+/EVDO/GSM/GPRS/EDGE, GPS, M.2 Card and I cannot get any GPS functionality with this. On my previous T510 /Win7  and a Qualcom Gobi 2000  I could use  the Thinkpad GPS program to manage the GPS, and then my mapping and navigation programs would see the GPS as a Comm port and connect with no problems at all. Reading posts here, it seemed that a program called GPS Complete from turboirc.com would do the job; I downloaded and installed it, and it seemed like it worked once, but now it doesn't. What's the solution here? (I have a USB GPS, but I bought a top of the line laptop because I wanted built-in GPS capabilities.) Edit: The wireless WAN/Mobile Broadband is activated through Verizon Wireless and is functional. Wifi, Bluetooth, and other communication features all work properlyp Thanks!

Answer:GPS T540p w/Sierra Wireless EM7355

HiFirstly, I don't have win10 installed neither em7355 card, So, my words below are ... just the words, they might not help.1. What virtual device is your location app (apps?) using? Com port or sensor? 2. Do you see location sensor em7355 related in the Device Manager?3. I hope you are using GPSComplete app properly. Whether the second device (com port?) had appeared in the Device Manager?4. Is location feature, based on the em7355 card, enabled in the win10 settings menu?5. em7355 location features might depend on the drivers installation options, similar previous Gobi gererations. Navigate to the folder where the drivers package is extracted, with .msi installer inside. There should be .ini file with options for installer. Post its content here.6. I hope you know the 1st fix after wwan modem based on GPS sensor cold start needs a long time, 10...20 minuts and more, especially indoor

Hi, There are two antenna wires in T440P, but three connectors on the card:1. MAIN2. GPS3. AUX It is clear that one wire goes to MAIN, but where goes the secondwire? As per installation diagramme you can do both???But what is the difference?thnaks for support !

Answer:Gobi 5000 EM7355 installation

HiPlug the red antenna cable into the jack labeled MAIN on the card, and the blue cable into the jack labeled AUX. Jack labeled GPS is for the active (!) GPS antenna, laptop hasn't it. That jack might have a voltage (depending on the internal settings), so If you'll connect any regular antenna cable, modem will be broken because of short circuit.Let me ask you: is you location Georgia in the reality? Where are you planing to use em7355 and what types of networks?

I have the Lenovo X1 Carbon 20A7003JUS with Sierra Wireless EM7355.  Using the Latest drivers from Lenovo.  I signed up with AT&T and trying to get a Static IP address to work (AT&T Rep set it up with i2gold).  I believe my issue is with assigning the proper APN when I connect to AT&T.  Just to be clear if I just use the Sierra connection on AT&T and not worry about the static IP.  I get blazing fast connections. I know I can setup the APN with the connection using the AT&T Allaccess software but when I install the software (tried multiple versions) it never sees my Sierra connection.  It either says Modem unplugged or no broadband card detected. Has anyone setup a static IP using AT&T on a X1 Carbon?

Hello, I am having issues with the EM7355 network card for Verizon Wireless. I have a sim card installed in my computer linked to an active service plan. Unfortunately I am having troubles getting this to work. My windows 10 pro connection manager says Cellular: No Service. I havent setup any API yet under the windows tool. Also, I noticed that the Lenovo activation software doesnt work as it cannot find a card. Windows does see the card and when I look at the details, it seems to be able to read the sim card as it popuates the phone number from the line.  Any help would be appreciated. Regards Richard

Has anyone got this card successfully working with Verizon?? SIM is in place and ready for activation with Verizon. When I try to use the Lenovo Mobile Broadband Activation tool the only options listed are ATT and Other. The other option just says to call your provider. This tool worked for us previously with the x230 and there was always a Verizon activation option. Any help much appreciated!

Answer:Verizon Activation x240 Gobi 5000 EM7355

Lenovo is aware of this issue but they don't have a solution yet. We have been dealing with this problem FOR MONTHS with both Verizon and Lenovo pointing fingers at each other. Until Lenovo fixes the problem, I would advise anyone who intends to use the Gobi 5000 card with Verizon to stay away. There are obviously problems that were not caught in QA that have lingered where our support requests were swept under the rug not acknowledging any problems. For the price you pay for these laptops, you would expect them to be working out of the gate. The X240, T440s/T440 and any laptops that use the Gobi 5000 are not ready for businesses who use Verizon and have a mobile workforce. You're better off slamming your head against the wall rather than wait for Lenovo to fix the problem.

Okay, so i was planning to upgrade my laptop once more. and this is the specs

My Laptop Spec: HP Pavillion ze5700 (UPGRADED)

OS: Windows XP SP3 32-bit.
Processor: Intel Celeron 2.8ghz (Which in DXDIAG states: Equivalent to M-PIV 1.4ghz)
RAM: 705mb
Video Card: ATi RADEON IGP 354m

Is there any Video Card, Processor, and RAM Slot that is Available? and that is CHEAP but has the power to play games in 2004-2008 range, or maybe. Record gameplays with DXtory?

Answer:Cheap Video Card replace/Processor replace/RAM replace

You can't upgrade the video card. Any upgrades to the CPU are slight.

I can not find any information on it, on what the RAM speed and limit is. It should say in the manual, which I can't find as well.

I got my x1carbon 5th gen couple weeks ago, and play it around for sometime i realize that a 4g module could be installed. After searching, i ordered a em7455 lte module and installed it. But i can get the gps works.I do installed the latest drivers&firmware from sierra site, and"Sierra Wireless Location Sensor"do appear in device manager. But i couldn`t get a fix in maps,or in sierra`s skylight. So what`s wrong?

Answer:A question about em7455,antenna and more

Welcome to the CommunityLocation applications might need NMEA port if they (usually, legacy applications) can't work with sensor. Default modem' configuration doesn't provide such port. Check out the applictions settings.

I have a Carbon X1 with a cellular card - it says:Manufacturer:       Sierra Wireless
Model:                    Sierra Wireless EM7455 Qualcomm
Network Type:      GSM
Data Class:            UMTS, HSDPA, HSUPA, LTE
I put in a Three (UK) prepaid data SIM, and.... nothing.
It asks for APN settings.  I've put in what the Three site suggests; nothing.  Network settings persists in telling me that Cellular is "switched off", without any obvious way to switch it on.

Hello, I just unboxed a 470p and created a reference image in SCCM/MDT using the SCCM package from the download page. Everything worked fine until the point when I tried to use the built-in WWAN device. It worked exactly once and I was able to dial in to the intertubez. Hanging up, recreating the reference image with a few changes and testing again never brought the device back to life. Over a timespan of a few hours it has gotten worse and worse and now it's not working anymore at all. It's not even visible in Windows' device manager anymore. (Hidden devices displayed). It's just gone. Running any linux and doing an "lspci" or "lsusb" doesn't show the device either. I'm under the impression that the card just died and that's it. Over the last few hours I was able to make the device visible again by just resetting the BIOS to its defaults and boot. So it was accepting a PIN again, but couldn't find a network nor was it accepting any APN configuration at all. Before we start speculating:After the first time the device worked it never worked again. This is what I did: - Flashed BIOS to latest version (1.14/1.02)- I tested multiple SIM cards from different german providers, none worked.- I removed the driver from the reference image that comes with the SCCM package and installed the driver manually- I tested multiple versions: R0GWS10W (latest available), NZ1WN03W and N1HWL05W.- I always reimaged with a clean image before testing a driver I also not... I would like to purchase a carrier unlocked Sierra Wireless EM7455. Is it possible to update/modify the firmware on the Lenovo CRU part, allowing alterantive to At&t and Verizon carrier options? Does anyone have a trusted source to buy unlocked versions that work with Lenovo MoBo's?I'd like to use T-Mobile (via google fi) in the States, and Three mobile in Europe. Also if the Lenovo part is able to be unlocked, which of these two is the one to be ordered? Has anybody else seen this or can you recreate the problem? The Sierra Wireless EM7455 LTE card keeps crashing the PC.  But exactly as follows..... You are connected to the internet using the EM7455.  You sleep the PC while connected.  You wake the PC.  EM7455 cannot connect again.  EM7455 is also lost from Device Manager.  A scan for new hardware just hangs and freezes the Device Manager window.  The only option is to restart the PC.  BUT...if you sleep or hibernate at this point (instead of restart) the PC crashes with BSOD (ntoskrnl.exe error).  This happens every time, without exception.  All the drivers are the latest, currently 7.44.4709.0102.  Firmware is 2.24.03.  I tried to upgrade to 2.24.05 from Sierra Wireless but it keeps reverting to 2.24.03 (must be a Lenovo OEM things that prevents the update).  Any ideas?  (apart from disconnecting before sleep!) Thanks

Hello everybody, I have problems setting up the wwan module EM7455 under Ubuntu 16.10 (kernel: 4.10.0-13-generic). I have extensively googled, tried most of the approaches, but nothing seems to work for me.  The module is recognized, but I can't connect to any network. The area is all greyed out (see picture). The LTE-frequency-bands of my provider (Salt, Switzerland) are covered by the module (3, 7, 20) usb-devices

I am installing an EM7455 WWAN card in my P70. The User Guide states that the SIM used by the system is a Micro-card. When I called Verizon Wireless to obtain a 4G-LTE card, they could not find the P70 in their database. However, they said they knew the size and shipped me a SIM card. Unfortunately, it was the incorrect SIM-card size (apparently there are multiple) so I have to obtain the correct card from a Verizon store when the WWAN arrives from China. The model number of the card needs to end in 3FF-A. It would have been really convenient if the Verizon SIM card was orderable on the Lenovo website at the same time as I ordered the EM7455 from the Accessories storefront.

Hello.I just received my X1 Carbon gen. 4 laptop with a factory installed Sierra Wireless EM7455 WWAN card and provisioned with Windows 7.  Unfortunately, I have a very persistent and annoying problem. Almost every time it resumes from hibernate mode the WWAN card device fails to restart---the Sierra Wireless EM7455 Qualcomm Snapdragon X7 LTE-A QDLoader Port has an error: "This device cannot start. (code 10)" as reported by the Device Manager. I have updated the drivers to the latest version  on the support site (version 7.26.4539.0105 of the Sierra Wireless Lenovo Mobile Broadband Driver Package/Device driver version 16.3.1005.41) Any thoughts?

I recently installed an EM7455 LTE modem (FRU 00JT542) and antenna kit (FRU 01AW958) in my X1 Yoga running Windows 10 Pro.Drivers installed fine and I have nothing unidentified in Device Manager, and "Cellular" exists in the networking panel (when you click on the network icon in the taskbar). However, none of my SIM cards are being detected by the system. I've tried T-Mobile and Verizon SIM cards (both verified working in other devices) to no avail -- Windows keeps telling me to insert a SIM.I spent all afternoon on the phone with half a dozen Lenovo support reps (and have a ticket open with them) but we haven't made any headway yet. Here are some things we tried:Different Windows 10 installations (the original image on the supplied SSD vs. the one I created and have been using on my 950 Pro): no effectThe Windows 7 Mobile Broadband Activation tool: errorVarious Gobi 5000 Drivers: no effectUpdating UEFI: no effectWindows Troubleshooting: uselessI'm beginning to think it may be a hardware issue with the SIM slot but the reps haven't been willing to admit as much. In addition, I only have the depot warranty which I've heard atrocious things about, so I'd like to avoid that. I was also informed that they don't allow self-replacement of system boards so worst case I'll have to shell out for an onsite warranty.I'll take any suggestions -- even if they're shots in the dark!

I have an X1 Yoga 20FQ with Windows 10 Enterprise 64-bit and a Sierra Wireless EM7455 WAN card that came with the unit from Lenovo and an AT&T micro SIM card (also in the unit when it came from Lenovo). I also have the latest Lenovo software for the Sierra Wireless card (v. 7.47.4743.0105) from the Lenovo web site. The WAN card will connect to HPSA on AT&T (using the "default APN" and "broadband" in the Win 10 settings) but it will not connect to AT&T LTE. The AT&T web site at https://www.att.com/esupport/article.html#!/wireless/KM1218316 says to use NXTGENPHONE as the APN, but when I input that as the APN the card does not see it at all. I know that NXTGENPHONE is the LTE APN because that is the APN that my cell phone uses for its LTE data connection. AT&T tech support told me I the Windows 10 and NXTGENPHONE APN settings are correct and the AT&T diagnostics show I an LTE connection is available to me.I realize that there can be sources for this problem (Win 10 or AT&T) but I thought I would ask here to see whether anyone has experienced the problem or has a solution.Thanks.

Hey there! I hope you can help me with a problem. One of our L470's stopped reading simcards all of a sudden (Sierra EM7455 LTE modem). The performance of the SierraWireless EM7455 WWAN LTE modem in my X1c Gen 5 leaves much to be desired.  Among its flaws: It takes about 10 seconds to wake up when I resume the laptop from sleepIts sensitivity is really, really, weak.  I know it's bad because I used to use my old X1c3 in the exact same spots and it used to work much better.  My 3-years old iPhone 6+ also has much better/stable data connectivity.Sub-par WWAN performance with SierraWireless products fitted by Lenovo is nothing new.  My old X1c3 came with an EM7345 WWAN modem, which suffered from well documented issues in its days. Thankfully Lenovo realized the performance wasn't adequate for the premium products it was sitting in and slowly but surely improved the performance (see previous link for history).  So in the last 6 months or so (out of 2+ years!) of using my X1c3 its performance was finally adequate.  Sadly "upgrading" to the EM7455 is a massive step back! Please post your experience with the EM7455.  Maybe I have a faulty unit?  If not and they're all as bas as mine, we need to make some noise so Lenovo picks up the issue.

Dear Thinkpad X Forum, here it is Michi, an old user of all kind of Thinkpad. In the last 5 years I have had the X1 Carbon (1st and 2nd Generation) and X1 Yoga (1st generation). After a very unfortunately repair in my X1 yoga (only 18 months old but suffered 4 onsite repairs with the only result that two LCD screen were broken, hinges not working and battery not able to work on a reliable manner), I decided to move to a X1 Carbon 5th Generation. Info regarding the new laptop:- 20HRCTO1WW- Received on january 4th 2018 (should have been produced in the last week of 12/2017), directly shipped from PRC-WWAN: Sierra 7455 ISSUE:1) tried to insert the MICRO-SIM I had on my the X1 Yoga. [OS: Windows 10] Is there an application to use for sending/receiving SMS messages with the Sierra EM7455 Wireless WAN card? What I am looking for isn't one of those bulk sending applications that connects to some server ove Internet. What I want is to send and receive SMS messages just like the way I can do so on my phone. I am really hoping someone knows of such an app, because all googling efforts turned out to be useless.

Lenovo why you lock the com ports on the Sierra Wireless EM7455 ????? USB composition for the EM7455 is set to 9, which is MBIM only. I need to have MBIM and also COM ports for the AT commands and NMEA GPS data. So I need the USB composition 8My question how to enable the com ports again ???thank you in Advance...

Answer:Sierra Wireless EM7455 COM ports are Locked... Lenovo Why do you do something like that?

Hello and welcomeThat's not a Lenovo deal to lock the ports, more clearly, to choose appropriate default USB composition. MS and Sierra do that. To change default USB composition change Sierra wwan card drivers installation configuration and reinstall them. Edit the configuration.ini file within the drivers package:- [Default Values] section- USBCOMP=x parameter (choose 8 as you want).

Not sure if this is a problem, more just a question... I installed a brand new Sierra EM7455 WWAN module a few days ago in my X260--got it direct from Lenovo. Getting it working was a little convoluted (had to reset BIOS) but it connects just fine to AT&T. The question or concern I have is when ever I restart the computer, I get a pop-up in the lower right that says "Configuring mobile broadband device...Do not shut down or restart Windows." It takes about 1-2 minutes, says "success" then everything is fine. The "problem" is that this happening every time I reboot. Has anyone seen this or know what's wrong? I've attached a screenshot of the message. I installed the official Lenovo drivers for the EM7455. I tried uninstalling the Sierra package and the message goes away--but so does the WWAN module... I re-installed the driver package and now the message is back. I had an X250 with the previous gen Sierra WWAN module and it was generally trouble free, no strange issues like this. Thanks

Current Lenovo firmware for the EM7455 is 02.20.03.22, however Sierra Wireless has a newer version, 2.24.05.06 listed here: https://source.sierrawireless.com/resources/airprime/minicard/74xx/airprime-em_mc74xx-approved-fw-pa... After flashing with the newer version and rebooting, the card reverts back to 2.20.03.22. Has anyone else experience this? Is this something the carrier would dictate and enforce? Any help would be appreciated. Reason for upgrading is, when traveling internationally the unit has spotty connectivity and not very reliable. Hoping firmware upgrade would be a step in the right direction to resolving it.

I bought two brand new X270's WWAN upgradable and bought EM7455 cards separately. I installed the cards as directed. When I booted the laptop the first time after installation, a warning message saying something to the effect of "unknown network hardware EM7455." Windows didn't detect the newly installed card. So I did a CMOS reset (removed the extra battery, disabled the built-in battery on the BIOS and pressed the CMOS reset button to the left of the battery bay). After the CMOS reset, Windows recoginized a new hardware by the name of "Sierra Wireless EM7455 Qualcomm" but couldn't install the driver (see the attached screenshot). I did install Lenovo's EM7455 driver (total file size 191MB) and didn't work. I turned to Sierra and found a generic USB Build 4581 driver and it didn't work. When I restarted Windows, the newly found hardware was gone. I did a CMOS reset again and it came back up on the device manager list.  So I turned to Windows update. It found a driver update by the name of Sierra Incorporated - Ports dated 10/20/2016. It tried to install it but it failed. However, the device's name was changed to Qualcomm COM Port (3) and it was still not installed properly. I went to the device's properties and changed the port to 8. It recognized the full name of the card but GPRS connecitons on Windows didn't show up. Hi I resently got a Thinkpad x1 yoga gen 2Type 20JE-S1C600S/N R9-0NGFRQ 17/05 As far as I know there should be a Sierra Wireless EM7455 modem in the machine, but i can't get windows to detect it. I doesn't show up in device manager, or in the network setting of windows. It is running Windows 10 Home. 64bit. In bios I can enable or disable WWAN (under security > IO ..), not sure if that means there is a modem, or just a setting thats always there in the bios. There is a slot in the back of the machine for a SIM card, but not sure if that means there is a moden in the machine, or the slot is always there.  I Tried reinstalling the machine, but didn't help.I've made sure there is no pending updates for the machine.   1. Can you guys help confirm if there is a modem in the machine. (If not, then the seller lied to me)2. If there is, how do I get it working ? I did put a SIM card in the SIM slot in the back of the macine. I'm pretty sure it is currectly inserted. There is only one direction where I hear a small click, and the card stays in place.  Thanks Simon

I've been trying to fix a problem with my Lenovo T460S for months now, with hours spent on it and no success. The thing pops up with "Configuring mobile broadband device" every time from a fresh start, which takes about 30 seconds to complete. I've read this is to do with the SierraEM7455 onboard, but there is only one driver available for this on the website, and this does not fix the problem.  Does anyone know how to fix this? I'm getting very frustrated with it.

Answer:T460S "Configuring Mobile Broadband Device" every time on power up (Sierra EM7455)

HiThere is a solution in another thread where you've posted short question about issue with em7455 - disable Selective Suspend Mode drivers.Navigate to the folder where em7455 drivers package from Lenovo site is extracted (usually c:\drivers...). There should be Lenovo7455DriverSetup installer and Configuration.ini file. Open the latter in the text editor like Notepad. Add the following string in the 1st section [Default Values]:SS=0It'll disable SS mode drivers installation. Save the file, reinstall the drivers. I'd advice to remove existing modem drivers firstly.

Will I see any noticeable benefit?

to trust or not to trust?
btw when i record a TV show the sound is not in sync with the video
i've tried seperating them both and then putting them together yet it doesnt work
when im doing the recording its has a memory use of around 800mb
its either my sound card that is too slow with the via chipset or the use of paging file slows down the recordingto trust or not to trust?

Answer:New RAM benefit PC?

I don't see why this would be a RAM issue (on another notice, Patriot is a trustworthy brand), though the page file might have something to do with it, but it's highly doubtful.
My money is on a software or a tuner-related problem. Make sure you have the latest drivers installed for your TV tuner, video card, and sound card. Try using another recording software, see if it helps.

Here's an article on the subject

Bear in mind that it might be a playback problem. Have you tried playing the recordings on another computer or video player?

Friends,

Can my system benefit from running two graphics cards in SLI?
My main limitation , I guess, is my monitor. it is a 19" Dell LCD ( FP1908).
It has max resolution of 1280x1024 and a 5ms response time.

My CPU is fine. It is a Core2Duo OC'd to 2.8 GHZ. I get decent frame rates in most games.

So would I see much benefit of 2 GPU's with this monitor ?

Thanks.

I'm running a Dell Dimension 2400 with 256MB of ram, windows xp pro sp2, and all the other stuff shown in my profile below. Between me and my wife, about the only software we use is Microsoft Office 2003, MSIE for normal web browsing (but never for sound or games), hotmail (I use outlook express; my wife goes directly to hotmail via MSIE), MS Streets and Trips, Quicken, mIRC occasionally, Adobe, Taxcut, Fund Manager (a marvelous mutual fund tracking program!), and the usual set of protective software shown below.

In practical terms, would I REALLY benefit from doubling the amount of RAM? Or would that be overkill in my case?

Hi there, after heaps of tries I have managed to get the Sierra Wireless working in Linux Mint 18.2, the only problem, it automatically goes back to unavailable after suspending or disabling and then re-enabling it. The only way to get it to work again is to restart the lap in Win10 and then again into Linux again. Any workaround? This is being a massive pain!

Sabertooth: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131801&Tpk=sabertooth%20x79

The only question is, would I benefit from a soundcard, or is my on-board audio good enough to handle 7.1 surround? I play Battlefield 3 and watch a lot of movies and would like to take full advantage of the 7.1.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Would I benefit from a soundcard?

The onboard sound should be good enough for 7.1 speaker systems, I haven't tried the Circumaural head phones yet but I would think the onboard sound should handle that well also.

I "upgraded" to 7 about a month ago after using XP for several years, and am still wondering what's better about windows 7? It's slightly faster to boot, but most of the other changes are annoying at best, and it seems like this is just another excuse for Microsoft to extract more money from the public.

Answer:What's the benefit to Windows 7?

Been using it for a year almost. I would say it's just awesome . A little patience with a new OS will get you used to it & make you aware of the lovely UI+features. If you remain annoyed, guess you have the option Clean install of back to XP.

Thanks for any input.

I have both a Netgear FVS318 and a Buffalo WHR-G54S.

Right now I'm just using my Buffalo router (flashed with dd-wrt) for everything, so the Netgear is collecting dust. We have renters in the basement who use the wireless. The problem is if I download torrents it slows down everybody's internet. I've tried tweaking the settings for the Buffalo router but no matter what I do torrents still bog down the network.

Would I be able to gain any performance by using some combination of the routers that would prevent the network slowdown for everyone else when I'm downloading? Would I be able to benefit in other ways by making use of both routers?

Answer:Benefit of a second router?

if your refering to internet browsing being slow, then a 2nd router is not going to resolve the issue.

To resolve the issue with the slowdowns, you will need to limit the bandwidth of your torrent application. There should be some sort of option for this in the program. The torrents are eating up all the bandwidth supplied to you by your isp, thus causing all others to be slow when trying to browse or do anything on the net

Hi
Friend's laptop - Samsung R519,
Win 7 Pro / 32-bit,
Processor Intel Celeron Dual-Core 1.9GHz
1Gb RAM installed, 2 slots
(apparently can take up to 4Gb, of which 3+Gb would be available - my understanding)
I accept that this laptop won't be superfast but I'm wondering if an increase of RAM would likely make much impact on it being a bit faster, so would value your opinions/advice, please
Here are some screen dumps of Performance, in Task Manager. RAM is consistently at approc 50% before doing anything but, when just browsing or emailing from webmail site, the memory seems to go up to about 85%.
Here is a shot of what is using memory when no programs open, ie idle
http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/4025/allprocessesmemoryusage.jpg
Performance -
Screen dump when Idle - CPU 0% / Memory Usage 506Mb
http://img541.imageshack.us/img541/2421/idlekh.jpg
Screen dump when attaching this image to email in web mail (Firefox)
http://img849.imageshack.us/img849/668/71486084.jpg
I do hope that helps to see what is happening ;)
If increase would be considered beneficial, should I go for 2 or 4Gb - obviously cost/benefit would be a consideration. Also, if to increase just to 2Gb, would it be worth risking just adding 1Gb from ebay??? ;)
Again, I do thank you for all your help and advice
Cheers

Answer:? Increase in RAM will benefit, please

2Gb would not make a great difference, 4Gb would at least show some increase in speed compared to the 1Gb.

What are the benefits of XP Pro over XP Home. I have a new or never opened OEM version of XP Pro that I had purchased for another computer and never installed it. The computer I have now has XP Home. Should I upgrade?

If I upgrade I need to back up what I currently have on this system correct? To do a ghost back up on a backup hard drive do I need to create a partition on that drive?

Thanks for your Help.

Cheers,
Jeb

Answer:Benefit of XP Pro over XP Home?

XP pro has remote desktop and other networking tools that XP home does not have. However there are very few day to day differences.

A ghost backup will allow you to restore the entire OS and all files, not just backup your files. And yes, you need a partition on the drive.

Ok, so I'm thinking of upgrading my workstations to vista, but my question is, what's the benefit? I've worked in IT for awhile now and seen some great improvements in operating systems over the years. Upgrading from 2000 to XP, there was a clear benefit, but I can't see one from XP to vista. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy with vista, but I don't want to have to go through the hassle of imaging about 2,500 workstations if i don't have to. Eventually, I will, but can i wait?

Any tips or suggestions would be great.
Thanks.

Answer:XP to Vista = Benefit???

I thought long and hard about upgrading all my workstations to Vista, I eventually came to the conclusion that it just wasn't worth it, most of my users have just about got the hang of XP so Vista would lead to more support calls, some of the workstations would need upgrade, also there is the effort involved in imaging the systems.

If XP works fine for your users.....leave it alone, and spend the time you would be using to do the upgrade drinking coffee and surfing the net.

I ordered a P50 with 64G non-ECC RAM. Simply because I was out of enough budget for ECC RAM. Time to time I ask myself why ECC RAM is so expensive and how it can change my Thinkpad P50 experience and why there is such option for P50I might not have a need for ECC RAM now Or maybe I am not aware of such need. I appreciate if someone explain what is actual need of ECC RAM and when I need that.I plan to use P50 for web development using several VMs that may fill whole 64G memory. Do you think my system could be more stable with ECC RAM? Can none-ECC RAM cause blue screen or losing my VM data because of not correcting the memory? I never had any corrupted VM or file due to not having ECC RAM but I also never had a system with such huge memory. How I should know  corruption is happened and it is because of having none ECC RAM? It appear ECC ram is useful for servers if that is true what is benefit of having ECC ram at a desktop computer? Can you show me a real usage of ECC ram that I can not do it with none-ECC RAM? Do you know any software that dont work with none-ECC RAM?Happy ThinkPading!

Answer:What is real benefit of ECC RAM over non-ECC RAM?

There is nothing I can think of or can imagine that will not work with non-ECC RAM.  If you had a server or computer that needed 7-24 availability or where you would suffer serious losses if there were a system crash, then ECC might make sense.  I have used a lot of computers and I have had very few memory chips go bad, and on the rare occasions where it happened, I diagnose and repair just as I would diagnose any other error.  I would not consider the benefits to be worth the cost, for my use.  I also do not use something like RAID-6 to handle 2 drives failing at the same time on my desktop.  I simply keep good backups and deal with any errors when they occur.  For me, using redundant drives would just mean I would have more too-small drives to throw away when data growth renders them obsolete.

Wikipedia has a decent description of ECC.

Are your programs 16-bit ones? And is your OS 64-bit? 64-bit Windows won't run 16-bit programs. But you can always run a 16- or 32-bit OS in a virtual machine and run your programs on that.

I have a A64 3200+ in my file server, and am wondering, do I need a x64 OS in order to notice a difference in file transfer speed? Or is a x86 good enough?

Answer:x64 OS needed to see benefit?

32-bit is probably good enough for your needs.

You would want a 64-bit OS if you needed to access more memory (under Windows, over 2GB per process or more than 3.something GB flat address space), or if you had software that ran faster under 64-bit mode.

Your file transfer speed probably depends mostly on your NIC speed and efficiency. Gigabit NICs in your systems and a gigabit switch will help your file transfer speed more than the OS will, as long as it's configured properly.

Before I installed the ssd, I had a 500GB Seagate running my OS and was using a Samsung 320GB hd to store a system backup image / paging file and temp files on. I have an external usb drive which I keep my backup images on now. Would it be of benefit to hook the Samsung drive back up and use it for paging and temp files again? If so, do I need to format the Samsung drive first? Thanks!

Answer:Any benefit in using my standard hd along with my ssd?

Hello p5200,

Since SSDs are faster than a HDD, it would actually hurt your performance to move the page and temp file to a HDD instead of leaving them on the SSD.

A HDD good be good for backups and extra storage to save space on the SSD though.

Hope this helps,

right now i have my cable modem hooked up to a router/nat device that serves as a dhcp server/default gateway for the other devices on my home network. the same setup a lot of people have. I was just wondering if there was an benefit to me leasing a block of static ip's from my ISP and just using a layer 2 basic switch (or layer 3 switch), with no NAT, or dhcp server. Before home routers became the normal, thats how i used to have my network, and things just seemed a lot simpler. is there any performance benefit to this? i know since the ip addresses are exposed to the internet, theres a little bit less security. other than that, though? thanks guys. any help is appreciated.

Answer:benefit of static ips?

no.

Not at all, you loose security, you lose being able to NAT anything really

Question is, do you need public IP's for your devices?

not likely, your jsut exposing yourself, sure you can install some software firewalls and such, but why put all your devices out in the open if you dont need to?

1) I dislike the fact that the registry server is even installed at all, nevermind running by default in Windows 2000. Even after 4 service packs, this service is STILL enabled by default. Allowing people from the internet to view your PC's most sensitive settings is akin to sharing your entire /etc folder in the Unix world. I don't know any Unix users who would do this....

2) Speaking of the registry... why would you create additional central points of failure, by placing all of your settings into the registry. Say for example, that your registry is corrupt. You aren't able to startup your PC at all, in most cases, which doesn't help you troubleshoot, or even recover your data without using additional tools.

3) NTFS is certainly a huge improvement over FAT8/12/16/32, but nonetheless it is still prone to fragmentation. Ext2/3 and most other Unix FS' are (I'm told), much less prone to fragmentation. There is no need to defragment under Linux.

I have a technet subscription and I'm considering putting Windows 8 on a Dell Optiplex GX280 I have.

Specs:
2 GB DDR2
Intel Pentium 4 3.2 GHz (with HT)
80 GB HDD
nVidia Quadro FX 1400 128 MB graphics card

Would this machine be any faster on Windows 7 than it is on XP? I've heard that Win7 is faster.

Answer:Would this PC benefit from Win7?

It's about the minimum spec, I say anything with 2gb ram is good for 7. although in this case the HDD space would be a factor since win7 uses around 20gb or more, where as XP can vary from 500mb - 4gb it's still significantly smaller even with all features installed.

I've searched and searched and for the life of me i cant find any benefit of a 64bit os over a 32bit.

Ive checked up on all of my hardware, it all has 64 driver support, ive checked the software i most commonly use, it also supports 64 bit but even so i cant find any reason to get 64 bit. I mean, in theory it should preform significantly better but it seems that in reality it actually does worse of not identical.

So can anyone justify to me the purpose of 64 bit os?

im buying a new OS regardless im just trying to understand why 64-bit sucks and what are (if any) the benefits to using it over tried-and-true 32.

I do a lot of video editing
I do a lot of photoshop
I do a lot of Gaming

And from what i've read there's simply no performance increase in any of these (or anything else for that matter) with going the 64bit road. Im in the process of building a new computer and im trying to go state-of-the-art but it sure is hard when the latest and greatest isnt all that great.

Answer:Absolutelly no benefit of 64-bit???

64 Bit are usually for users who are into a lot of programming and coding stuff. Going 64 bit doesnt increase performance at all. It will increase the "handling" power of instructions to the core.

I have Emisisoft Internet Security, ESET, Sandboxie and HitmanPro Alert...so what would the benefit of adding AppGuard and would it actually work or make any difference in the security?

I play lot of online games (Star Wars Online, Battlefield 4, Guild wars 2 etc) so I don't want this to interefere with it.

Answer:So what is the benefit of AppGuard if using Sandboxie?

ESET Smart Security or NOD32 ?

If ESS on 2 different systems or combined with EIS on 1 system ?

Anyhow...

AppGuard protects the physical system should anything "break-out" of the Sandboxie sandbox or - more likely - you make a mistake.

AppGuard in Lock-Down mode is probably as good as can be had from a software restriction policy security soft - unless you use Excubits Bouncer or NoVirusThanks Smart Object Blocker and write all the rules. Writing all the rules is a horrendous task if you don't know what rules you need.

AppGuard is the most user-friendly of the SRP softs, Lock-Down mode SRP is very tight, and at only about 5 MB RAM usage it is difficult to do any better.

Yes. By adding AppGuard your security would be "maxed-out."

Im not clear on what duel channel active ram really does. Could someone clear it up for me? And does it work alot better on the amd 939 pin? About the amd 939 pin, how does this make a processor run better than the 747?( i think its 747)

thanks

Answer:What does duel channel benefit

Doubling the theoretical bandwidth of any single-channel chipset, these new logics offer significant performance and architectural gains. Therefore, the need for fast memory that can run in dual channel mode is more important than it has ever been.

I don't see any.

It does not seem faster.

Vista never uses more than 2 GB on my System, for all the 4 GB+ talk.
The virtual memory/page file is as big as ever.

Drivers take for ever to come out, and are usually last.

You'd need an electron microscope to notice the additional features in 64 bit editions of games versus their 32 bit counter parts.

Am I completely missing the point of 64-bit Vista?

What percentage of Vista installed today is the 64-bit edition? Is it increasing?

Hmmm....

Answer:Is there any Realistic Benefit Using Vista 64 vs 32?

For me,the 64-bit version just Felt that little faster than the 32-bit Version.

If you are using 4GB RAM then u have to use X64 to make sure Vista uses all 4GB (Even if its not using it currently, with newer apps taking lots and lots of RAM,4GB will become a standard sooner rather than later).

Driver problems are more Vista Related (i.e both 32 and 64 bit) ,than only X64.
Yes the percentage of people using Vista X64 is increasing,In fact most people jumping onto Vista are getting the X64 version.

we know many of programs or softwares , like Messenger , Explorer , Yahoo , Whatsup , Photoshop , Realplayer , antiviruses ... etc the list goes on .

as users we download them freely and use .. leave aside the paid softwares , there the matter is clear that the money you pay to get the software goes to the company .. but what about the very much number of free softwares ? what is the benefit ?

another question , who owns the internet over the world and who takes my monthly cost of connection ?

Answer:what do software developers benefit ?

No one really owns the world wide Internet. This is much like the telephone system. There are international standards that govern it's use. Your monthly fee goes to your ISP and they use it to cover operating costs and the bandwidth used by subscribers.

Is there any benefit in having a sata drive fitted instead of a IDE drive? What are the differences between the SATA drives? Thanks

Answer:Benefit of SATA drive?

The main difference is speed of operation.ATA133 can transfer data at approx 133Mbs/s whereas SATA is approx 150Mbs/s.There are also differences in the data cable attaching them to mobo,SATA uses a thinner cable,ATA/IDE has the familiar ribbon cables.

My system has 48mb ram. I don't use it for games, I use it to browse, newsgroups - jpg and mpeg, I may start mpeg editing. Will extra ram benefit me (max ram 256mb) and how. Glow

Answer:Will extra ram benefit me. Newby

Ghloria, how much ram you can usefully add depends on your operating system and motherboard. Can you tell us what they are? I find that between 128M and 256M is ideal for Windows 98se. Up to 128M you will find that your computer responds much more quickly, over 128M the improvement will not be as dramatic. If you are going to edit mpeg files you will certainly need more memory than you have now. To handle these large files without extra memory, your computer will be constantly having access the hard drive to store and retrieve data. With extra ram this will not have to happen as often.

Hi guys, I've got a Toshiba laptop (check my specs) and it has 4gb of ram with a quad core processor. My Toshiba manual tells me that I can upgrade my ram to 8 gigabytes. Would adding 4gb more to my system (4x2 memory modules) help my system? Thanks!

Answer:Would laptop benefit with an 8gb ram upgrade?

It really depends on what you do with the computer.

RAM is so cheap right now that I did mine exactly like you are contemplating. (Went from 4GB to 8GB.) The trouble is that I also upgraded to an SSD at the same time, which I knew would really pep things up. This made it harder to see how much effect the RAM alone may have had.

I've heard rumors that the price for memory is heading back up. If you're on the fence and have the dough I'd be tempted to go for it. (I'm also assuming that RAM is as cheap where you are as it is here.)

Answer:PS and LR video cards SLI benefit?

For Ps...basically the GPU is only used for OpenGL drawing acceleration, nothing more. I don't believe there's any benefit to a GPU in Ps for anything other than the view, 2D or 3D.

By comparison - in AE and Premiere you can do a lot of stuff on a GPU that ends up being a lot faster than using the CPU for those tasks (such as rendering and encoding).

If your sole use here for the GPU would be Ps and LR (and assuming LR uses a GPU the same way Ps does).....you could get away with using a throwaway card or even onboard video and still get by just fine. Even though I'm in and out of CS5.5 all day at work, I've had no problems relying on my onboard video (880G chipset....Radeon 4250 graphics). Even my home system which has a much more substantial GPU (a 6950)....I still really don't see much benefit there, at least not for Ps.

If I was a heavy AE or Premiere user, I'd probably put my spare GTX 260 back in and use it for those apps...but I'm not really using either of those apps. If you're not either, you could get by with almost anything because Ps doesn't really use a GPU for much.

I am wondering if a HDD upgrade for my laptop be worth it? I currently have a

Acer Aspire 5920G
Core2Duo T9300
4GB DDR2
GeForce 8600M GT
320GB HDD (5400rpm)
will a upgrade to 7200rpm HDD benefit/be worth it? I need more storage so i am considering a 500GB 7200rpm. Or will I be better off with a 5400rpm 1?

Answer:Will a HDD Upgrade for Laptop benefit

I do know that if you upgrade to a SSD, you will definitely notice an improvement. I have one in my Toshiba laptop and the improvement is remarkable.

Accidentally I came across prices for graphic cards today. Turns out, for relatively small money, I can significantly upgrade my graphic card. At the moment, I am running ATI HD 2600 XT. The question is, what happens if I replace it by, say ATI Radeon HD 4650? Not top of the line (hence small money), but clearly newer than mine. Will I actually benefit from such upgrade? For background, I don't play games and I watch my videos on my TV, so if I watch anything on the PC, it's only to make sure I understand what is actually in the file.

Answer:Will I benefit from a new graphic card?

chances are you would not benefit much from this upgrade.

New Desktop (HP Pavilion 500-075). Is there any significant benefit to keeping HPDetect on the system? When it runs it seems to require an unusual amount of CPU resources and it seems to run every several days and I can't find a way to set a schedule for it to run. Would there be any adverse effects if uninstalled?

Just Wondering

Thanks

Answer:What's The Benefit To Having HPDetect On Desktop PC

It is usually used for the automatic detection of installed HP products for support purposes.
If you don't plan on using HP support, you can uninstall it, or disable it from the Task Manager/Startup.
