Dell XPS 8700 BIOS can't see hard disk

Question: Dell XPS 8700 BIOS can't see hard disk

Hi,
I'm struggling to get my head around a recent problem. I have a Dell XPS8700 with a SAMSUNG SSD PM851 mSATA 256GB (C:), and a Seagate ST3000DM001-1ER166 (D:), and a HL-DT-ST DVDRWBD CH30N DVD drive, running Windows 10 home.
One day it boots and doesn't see the D:. No prior SMART errors, no warnings, just no D:
Windows tools don't see the disk.I uninstall recent windows updates.I update drivers recommended from Dell site to no avail
I boot into BIOS and can't see the disk.I try swapping the data cable for the DVDI try swapping powercable
No dice - but when the PC boots I can feel the disk vibrating as if its powering up.I boot into the Dell Diagnostic tool, run all diagnostics and it does see the disk.
I reboot and everything is fine. My D: is back. I'm baffled and relieved. For a week. Someone reboots and then D: is gone. I run diagnostics again and now it doesn't see the disk.

What does this mean?
Should I buy replacement SATA cables?
A replacement disk?

Preferred Solution: Dell XPS 8700 BIOS can't see hard disk

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My son was planning to upgrade the GTX745 in his Dell XPS8700 to a new card. After checking online, we found that before installing the card we needed to upgrade the BIOS in the system from the current BIOS (A08) to a new BIOS (A11 for Win 10 systems). We ran the BIOS on the system from within Windows (removed all external connections except Keyboard and Mouse). The BIOS processed through the first few steps and then during the verify process the entire computer shuts down. Now, the computer will not POST at all. I will turn on and stay on for approximately 20 seconds before shutting down before starting the entire process over again. This computer has had zero issues for 2 years and now after installing Dell's BIOS upgrade the entire system is apparently fragged.
I pull the RAM out of the system and I do get an alert so at least there is some function going on. I have pulled the Nvidia card out of the system and am trying to get a signal off the onboard HDMI port. When I turn on the system I do get an acknowledgment that the monitor knows there is a source there. The monitor wakes from sleep briefly before going back into standby when it does not receive an actual signal in a timely manner
I know the chances of there being any fixes are slim but I thought I would check with the community and see if anyone has suggestions. I called Dell for kicks and after dealing with someone halfway around the world who obviously had no clue on how to help me, Dell told me t... Read more

So I recently decided to upgrade my gt 635 to a Gtx 960 but when plugging my vga into the vga to dvi  and turn on the computer I get no signal. The gpu's fan works and all the components are working. I found out I had to download bios a10 so I changed my gpu back to the gt 635 and it worked. So I updated my bios and it still doesn't work, I could definitely use some help. (Just saying I'm not super tech-savvy).

I want to test a USB stick with rescue media on my 8700.  I have the USB drive plugged in, but when I boot, I see the Dell logo, but nowhere on the screen do I see the "Press F2/F12" message.  I've tried various combinations of pressing each one once, multiple times, but it always carries on ignoring me and boots windows.
I'm running Windows 10, three monitors.  I'm starting to wonder if the BIOS doesn't recognise the keyboard (USB) and it only works later when appropriate drivers are loaded.  I will try to find another keyboard, but in the meantime, I would appreciate any suggestions.
Many thanks,

I have an Inspirion 530 running Windows Vista with a 320 GB Serial ATA 2 Hard Drive (Western Digital WD3200AAKS) which I would like to retire.  A couple of years ago I bought an 8700 which is now upgraded to Windows 10 with a Hard Drive described as KPF74 Hard Drive 1T, S3, 7.2K.  Not sure of the make as I didn't remove it.
I would like to use the Inspirion Hard Disk as a second Hard Disk in the 8700, hopefully without formatting it.  As I don't know much about the interchangeability in this scenario I am wondering what my options are?   I am assuming that I can use the SATA cable that came with the Inspirion Hard Disk and plug it into SATA 2 on the motherboard as I have a DVD in SATA 1.
Any enlightenment would be appreciated.

I have a Dell 8700 (Intel Z87 chipset) I recently purchased an Intel 600p SSD (M2) along w/ a PCI to M2 adapter.
While the SSD drive was recognized by Windows (10), it was not recognized by the BIOS.  My system is configured for legacy boot, and from what I've read a boot to a PCI SSD would only be supported by UFEI.  I'd be willing to reinstall Windows and change my boot mode, but, from all that I've read the current BIOS A11 on the Z87 w/ UFEI still would not support a boot to a PCI SSD.
Any chance there will be a BIOS update in the future, or would I need to go to a SATA SSD?
Thanks,
- martin

If you get the error Windows Repair Disk has stopped working when trying to make a repair disk in backup and recovery here's why it happens and how to fix it.
(thanks to auggy for this solution on the MS forums.)
the issue is with the DBROverlayIcon.dll which is a component of Dell Backup and Recovery (Dell Backup And Recovery Shell Extension).
To workaround the issue go to the following folder:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Dell Backup and Recovery\Components\Shell
In that folder right-click the DBROverlayIcon.dll and rename it to DBROverlayIcon.old
If successful creating a repair disk you can rename the DBROverlayIcon.old back to DBROverlayIcon.dll

I hope someone from Dell reads these forums because this is an error that should have got past a functional quality test case package.

I have an XPS 8700 desktop all stock bought a little over a year ago. Last night I turned it off when I went to bed. Today I turned it on and it will not go past the first dell loading screen. It freezes and I'm unable to press any buttons (F2, F12 etc) I put it a different hard drive to see if that was the problem but it still continued. HELP PLEASE??

Answer:Dell XPS 8700 Desktop, Freezes at dell loading screen unable to boot up.

Hi Mattmazz
Thanks for writing to us.
Please disconnect all the connectors and then hold down the power button for 15 secs, now remove the memory modules and put them back one by one and observe for any changes.
If possible please try another set of memory modules. If there is a separate graphics card, remove that as well and try the onboard.

Hi

My Dell N5050 laptop died and I tried moving the Harddisk into a old HP Deskpro. The disk boots fine but Windows 7 DELL OEM reboots as the windows picture comes up. It then allows me to do a repair but that doesn't help. The repair report doesn't give any clue to the problem.

I am guessing it is some fundamental driver that is Dell specific. Any idea how to sort it ?

The repair will allow me to get to a dos prompt.

Answer:Move Dell Windows 7 Hard disk into non-dell hardware

Welcome to our forum auror1968.

Their is a excellent chance that the OEM/SLP key, drivers and a lot more are tied to the Laptop and will not work on the Desktop.
Does you Desktop or Laptop have a Windows 7 sticker on it that looks something like this?

I have a samsung SV0411N ATA IDE hard disk, just enough to meet my memory needs.the problem is it doesn't get detected, there is no mention of the device in MY Computer. I tried to install XP on it, but set up displayed a message saying it could not read the drive.I used Vista disk management, from another HDD and in disk management, the disk finally showed up. but as soon as i start disk management, it asks me to innitialize the disk, i click OK, it returns data error (CRC). and then in the disk management window the disk shows up as a 37 GB unallocated space.when i try to create a new simple volume, it says "operation cannot be completed because the disk is not innitialized"Chkdsk dosen't read the drives, the samsung doesn't even have a drive name yet.

Answer:Hard disk not working but detected in BIOS/disk Management

EDIT: Rewritten for clarity
On Realtek ALC3861 Audio Driver (ver. 6.0.1.7525, A00) for Windows 10, there is no longer a button labeled "Show Meters" under Speakers/Headphones > Maxx Audio Pro in the bottom right corner (please see attached screenshot). This button in previous versions of the driver for Windows 7 opened a new window with sliders to balance front and back speakers in a surround sound setup.
What I did:
Updated my OS from 7 to 10 and updated the Realtek audio drivers accordingly - to the above mentioned version.
What I expected:
The "Show Meters" button would be present in the newest Realtek driver.
What really happened:
Upon upgrade to the newest driver, the "Show Meters" button disappeared.

I have reinstalled the newest driver multiple times with no avail and tried the driver from Windows 8.1 and the default driver from Realtek with worse affects (Dell Audio window is missing most elements/drop down options, etc)

If anyone would know how to address the issue, if this is intentional, or who to escalate this to, I would appreciate it.

Answer:Latest Version of Dell Audio is missing "Show Meters" button. (Windows 10, Dell XPS 8700)

I feel that I should be more observant. In Control Panel > Sound > Playback > Select the Realtek device > Properties > Levels there are the exact changes I need. I don't know why I didn't notice until now. Could explain why there was no "Show Meters" button in this release but I thought Windows 7 also had the same leveling and there was the leveling in Dell Audio as well.
I'm still going with a new sound card from Creative however, seen a super nice $70 one that looks awesome and seems to have features to match.

Machine worked well for 3 years.   It is running windows 7.
However it now won't boot.   The Dell logo appears and if you hit the return key f2 settings f12 boot options menu occurs but then disappears.   I have tried repeatedly  hitting the f12 key or the f2 key or the f8 key but nothing happens.   Previously this problem appeared in a thread  (on another Dell model)  and was fixed by removing and replacing the connectors on the primary drive.   I tried this but it didn't effect my problem,    I've lost the restore drive but have a copy of windows 10 on a flash drive.  but I can't configure to boot from usb because f12 is'nt recognized.   HELP

I am upgrading the spinning hdds with two ssds.
Rather than removing both old drives, I was wondering if I replaced one drive at a time letting the Raid 1 rebuild itself on the new ssd then removing the 2nd hdd and replacing it with the new ssd.
Will this work, or is it too clever by half, and thereby doomed to failure?

Answer:Raid 1 on Dell XPS 8700

I think it is doomed to failure :) Ok, just kidding.
Here's what I would do.
1) backup all data
2) revert the raid mirror.
- shutdown reboot, remove ( aka Disconnect) one HDD make sure the system is good on a single non-RAID HDD
3) clone the HDD to an SSD
- reboot disconnect both HDDs and verify the system works with just the SSD
4) re-enable RAID mirror
That said, I've stopped using RAID1.
I don't need the fault tolerance and instead make a clone of my boot SSD and keep that clone offline. this defends both a hardware failure to the SSD as well as a Borked windoze build which IMO is more likely than a hardware failure.
I clone the SSD to the HDD every month or two and then just power down the HDD and leave it in the case disconnected.
Note that this is just one piece of my backup strategy. I started to do this for all of my Win7 systems because of the time it takes to reinstall the OS including all the nagging updates is insanely long.
good luck !

We bought this pc for our developers because of the power. I configured it and gave it to our developer and he gave it back saying it freezes. I wiped the hard drive and reinstalled Win 7 pro. Everytime it boots up and gets to the desktop screen it freezes and stops. I have to power it down. That's as far as i get EVERYTIME I power it back on. I can't even get to dell support to download the bios. I went and bought a replacement Hard drive Same thing. I get booted up and tahhhhdahhhhh FREEZE! How in the world am I going to download the bios from another source say a jump drive if i can't get past the FREEZE screen?

Answer:Dell XPS 8700 freezes

Did you buy this PC new, from Dell or from a big box? If it's under warranty, contact Dell tech support ASAP.
What color is power button when it freezes and is it steady or blinking?
Are you using onboard video or an add-in video card?
Reboot and immediately press F12. Look for option to run the diagnostics and run all of them, including RAM and extended hard drive tests. Post error messages here, if any...
If no error messages, reboot and press F8. Look for option to boot in Safe Mode and see if it freezes or not...
Try resetting BIOS to the defaults. Power off, unplug. Press/hold power button for ~15 sec. Open case and remove motherboard battery. Press/hold power button for ~30 sec. While you're there, carefully reseat RAM modules, PCI cards and all cable connections. Then reinstall the battery and see if it boots/runs correctly now.
And I would NOT try to update BIOS if the system is freezing, even if you boot from a bootable USB stick. If it freezes during the update, the motherboard will likely be toast...

Have a Dell XPS 8700 that I purchased in October of 2013.  The other day while my daughter was doing her homework the tower just shut down.  Will not power up at this time.  The green light on the back of the power supply is not illuminated.  The yellow "Aux Power" light inside of the case is on.
When I press the reset button, next to green light, on the back of the power supply the light comes on the fans in the case operate an the optical drive powers on.  So, is it the power supply or is the motherboard kaput?  Or is there some waay to reset things?  Tried the "hold power button down for 25 sec" thing to no avail and also left it unplugged overnight.

Answer:Dell XPS 8700 No Power

Remove the CMOS battery located on the motherboard. Leave it out for a few seconds then put it back in. Try booting up the computer after. The green light on the power supply shuts off while the computer is not powered on. Since the light does turn on and things spin up when you press the test button your power supply should be fine. It could be your motherboard, before we know try resetting the CMOS battery like I mentioned above. Hope this helps!

Hi everyone, I am newbie here. Recently I need to upgrade my ram on XPS8700. And I went to Best Buy and bought a "PNY - 2-Pack 8GB PC3-12800 DDR3 DIMM Unbuffered Non-ECC Desktop Memory Kit". It does not work, computer can not power on with flashing orange lights.
So I went to Crucial website, it recommends me to use a DDR3L RAM. I saw all the DDR3Ls are for laptops. Could it be used in my desktop? And my current RAM is Hyundai. Could it be mixed with other brand like Crucial or Kingston?
My pc specs:
i7 4770
GTX 645
8GB RAM
Dell Inc. 0KWVT8 mobo
1TB HHD

Answer:Dell XPS 8700 RAM upgrade

Laptops first started using DDR3L which is why the market is flooded with it, however you just need to look for the desktop version for your computer.  If you go to crucial they should have an auto test that will detect the correct ram for your machine and give you the list of options you can pick from.

What are the possible cpu coolers that you can install on the mobo dell xps 8700 motherboard without any fancy ghetto mounting. Just as if it was a normal motherboard?

Answer:CPU COOLER DELL XPS 8700

The XPS 8500, the precursor to the XPS 8700, has standard Socket 1155 spacing. Socket 1150 shares the spacing of the 1155, and thus I believe an aftermarket cooler should work.
A Cooler Master Vortex was a perfect fit on my XPS 8500 motherboard, and I assume the same would hold true for an XPS 8700. You will use optical drive-type screws to fasten the cooler to the board rather than the flimsy plastic push-pins.
Looking at an XPS 8700 mainboard on eBay, I can see a standard four-pin CPU fan header, just like that of the XPS 8500.

Good day everyone!
This is my first post to the forums, as I am a recent Dell convert - Dell monitors, a tower and speakers all make up my new workstation! One thing I wanted to do to improve performance from the get go was to use a solid state drive as a boot drive as well as some storage for some intensive games (like Flight Simulator) and for work. This is the drive I chose:
https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-850-EVO-2-5-Inch-MZ-75E500B/dp/B00OBRE5UE/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1473820312&sr=1-1&keywords=samsung+850+evo+500gb

I did not, however, do as the installation had recommended by connecting it to the USB port with a SATA to USB converter because I had forgotten to buy one, and decided to forego that step and just install it straight in the case, using one of the spare hookups for power for the HDDs and plugging in the SATA cable to the motherboard. The SATA cable I had no issue with, but the cord for the power supply may not be fully plugged in (I heard a click, but the cord is a little short).
I went to go clone the drive with the included Samsung Magician/Data Migration tool and all went well, it only took about 4 minutes to clone the OS (nothing else is installed yet basically). I was hoping that the changes would have turned the SSD into a hard drive/boot drive, but when I turned it back on, the OS was still booting from the old C: drive.
I went inside device manager and the SSD shows, but it's not being recogniz... Read more

Answer:Dell XPS 8700 not recognizing SSD

My suggestion. shutdown, unplug both power and SATA from your old HDD reboot and see if it works.
Assuming it does, we can sort out next steps to get your HDD setup as a data disk.
What version of Windoze? What BIOS version. It don't think either matter but it might help to answer the questions.

I have a Dell XPS 8700 currently with a Nvidia GeForce GTX 745 and I want to upgrade it to a MSI GeForce GTX 1060 DirectX 12 GTX 1060 GAMING X 6G 6GB 192-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready ATX Video Card. Is it compatible in terms of size, slots on the motherboard (Dell 0kwvt8), enough power? If it will require more power, what do you recommend for the minimum wattage needed and pls help m select a PSU for me that fits. Thanks a lot.

Answer:MSI GTX 1060 6GB for Dell XPS 8700 fit?

1) That card will physically fit
The size is identical to the MSI GTX 970 Gaming 4G which we have in one of our 8700s. The card takes two slots so remove the GT 745 and the PCI slot blank below it.
2) OEM PSU is sufficient, but if/when you want to upgrade there are several good choices.
3) you MUST upgrade BIOS A10 (windoze 7/81) or A11 (Win10) or the display will black screen on boot. Do this before installing the new card.
4) you  need a dual six pin to single 8 pin PCIe adapter. These can be found on eBay. I'll post a link in a separate response as it might get flagged for moderation because of the eBay link.
5) you will likely need a longer SATA cable. a 16 inch straight-straight or straight-90 will work.
If you have a single HDD, I suggest moving it to position HD2 and completely removing the drive cage. It makes it much easier to get the card in as it is a snug fit. On this system I moved the SSD to the lower optical bay and have the HDD in HD2 position.
here is a picture of how snug things are. note that this 8700 has an aftermarket CPU cooler, updated case fan and an upgraded PSU along with the GTX 970
You can probably sell the GT 745 on eBay and net about $30 after selling fees and shipping.
after you install the new card, I suggest using DDU to remove all traces of the prior graphics card driver and then re-install the driver directly from nVidia. checkout www DOT wagnardsoft.com (replace the DOT) with a .

I plan to sort of rebuild my Dell XPS 8700 desktop... I would like a new case, new psu, and a new GPU and possibly a new cooler! I plan on getting these items

GPU: GTX 970 superclocked 4gb
Case: Sentey® Bx1-4284 Plus Gaming Computer Case
PSU: Corsair CX750 750w PSU

The main thing that I am confused about is the case... I heard the motherboard may or may not fit the case properly, and I am in need of a better case, I need better cooling also due to my house being 80 degrees in the summertime... *** to *** huh? I don't feel like buying a new AC unit just to make sure my computer doesn't melt...

So any help would be awesome, I am set on buying that PSU and GPU, but the Case is a different ball game for me... I know Dell doesn't recommend replacing cases... but I bought the computer so I want to do it! Thanks!

Answer:DELL XPS 8700 rebuild?

Bumping this. I believe others have moved the guts of the XPS 8700 into a new case. I would like to hear success stories. I'm thinking abou getting a Thermaltake V31.

I'm considering installing an SSD on my desktop computer, and have read several places I need to set my BIOS to AHCI mode. I have no such mode listed in my BIOS. The only 2 options listed are LEGACY and UEFI. Is Legacy just Dell's description for AHCI? Can I just install using LEGACY? I can't seem to get any answers from the Dell forums. I'm using Windows 7 64 bit OS. I think the bios version is 8. If I use the LEGACY mode, will Trim still work? This will be a clone, not a fresh Windows install.
Thanks.

While trying to troubleshoot a problem with my Win 7 Home desktop (the boot seemed normal, but then no response to mouse), I mistakenly reset the BIOS option "Secure Boot OFF" to ON.
Now when I power up, I get a post beep and after a few seconds, five error code beeps, and no screen.  I cannot seem to enter the BIOS page with F2 or any other way I've tried.  No screen at any time.  The only thing that gets any response on the keyboard is Ctrl-Alt-Del, which repeats the same sequence as power on.  How do I reset the ON to OFF so I can boot up?  Thanks.
Hal

Answer:Bios problem in XPS 8700

5 beeps is usually a bad CMOS battery or a bad realtime clock -- I doubt the problem is related to the change you made.
Replace the CMOS battery(it's a CR-2032 lithium button cell on the mainboard).   They're well under $2 each on Amazon.
If that doesn't solve the problem, it's the realtime clock that has failed - the mainboard will need to be replaced.

I want to update the BIOS from its present A04 edition to the latest A11 edition in order to use a GTX 960 graphics card without bricking the mobo or otherwise running into problems. Hello Dell community!
I was messing around with things and I ran GPU-Z and noticed that my GTX 1060 was Running at PCI-e x4 speeds instead of x16!

As you can see, the thing supports x16, but the card is only running at x4
Can someone help me fix this issue or at least tell me why this is happening?

Answer:Dell XPS 8700 GPU running at x4 Speeds

try running a load on the graphics card, and checking again.
spin up a quick run of Furmark or one of the Unigine tools like Valley or Heaven while GPU-Z is running and see what happens..
I can't remember, but GPU-Z might even have a stress button behind that question mark.pu

According to device manager I have a Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260 card, Driver version 17.15.0.5 dated 2/22/15.

For some reason I have intermittent wifi signal drops, and I have to go into settings, network and settings, and do the trouble shooter to get it to work again.  This happens on a daily basis.

My laptop and other computers in our home are NOT having this issue.  I thought at first it might be the router, etc.

According the scans on the computer via the dell software everything is up to date.  So, I'm guessing my driver is up to date.

Does this sound like I need to replace the wireless card?  Or is there something else I could try?

Thank you!

Helen

Answer:Dell 8700 Wifi Card

Maybe. It could be a driver. Also, is it windoze 10? Even higher chance of a driver issue.
Try deleting the device in device manager. Also, if you are not using BlueTooth, disable that.
For me, I gave up on wifi cards in 8700s.
I went with a powerline ethernet adapter with one and another I use a Router setup in wireless bridge mode for another. The rest run switched ethernet.
Other options are the USB type wireless adapters. I haven't used them on 8700s but have on other systems and they work in most cases better than the card in the laptop.

Hello,
so I want to upgrade my current CPU to a i7 7700K inside my XPS 8700, but I was wondering is it still possible and will work just fine? I haven't seen anyone do a 8700 upgrade with a i7 7700k, and was wondering if the mobo is even compatible with the 7700k. Haha I am a PCNewbie, and don't want to make any mistake. If not possible, shall I upgrade the motherboard? But however if it does work, will I need to upgrade my Dell 460w PSU? If so, can you link me any good models I should go for?
Also, I look to do some video editing/rendering, and is 12gb fine for that? 16 is what people say is good, however is it really a big difference?

Anyone wondering what model my XPS 8700 is, can't find the exact link or anything, but I know it had:

Recently upgraded my Dell 8700 with a GTX 980, getting some crashes and noticed the CPU was running a bit hot at high 70s C. So I got a Be Quiet fan with push pin. Obviously when I tried to install the fan it would not fit because of the non standard backplate of the XPS 8700.
My question is can I just get a standard backplate off another motherboard and use that to secure the retention clamp then install the Be Quiet fan into the Motherboard?

Hey guys, I'm looking to update my Dell XPS CPU to a i7 7700k, which is paired with my GTX 970 and 12gbs of RAM. However, will the update work? I haven't seen much info or forums relating to upgrading a 7700k on a XPS 8700, so I was wondering, will it work with the motherboard the XPS 8700 has? Will I need to upgrade the mobo? And what about the CPU fan? Shall the standard stock CPU fan work? Is 460w of power an issue? Thanks for any info.
XPS 8700 (If your looking for my model, i can't find any link, but I know it came with this)
- GT 635
- i7 4770
- 12gb Ram

Answer:Will a i7 7700k Work In A Dell XPS 8700?

No, you cannot upgrade the XPS 8700 to a 7700K. The CPU physically will not fit as it is a different socket from what is in the 8700.
You can upgrade the CPU to a 4790K, but the benefits may not be worth the cost.
You don't say why you are wanting the upgrade.

What MS OS can the Aurora R1 support (2560x1440 display, updated GPU)
What MS OS can the Aurora R3 support (2560x1440 display)
Can either move to Windows 8.1.x? Or both?
Can either or both move to Windows 10.x?
What is significantly different between Win 8.1.x Pro and Win 10 Pro?

Srosxi

Answer:DELL ALIENWARE AURORA R1, R3, X51, and XPS 8700

First there is a free upgrade from Windows 7 OEM to Windows 10 Retail so there is absolutely zero point in purchasing a Windows 8.1 Retail license...
Windows 10 TH2 is essentially a fixed version of Windows 8.1 where Metro Apps work correctly as "Windows".
Almost any system shipped with Windows 7 can run Windows 10. As they are 2009 and 2011 models respectively Dell did not provide updated drivers for Windows 8.x or Windows 10 because they are all out of warranty. All the drivers should be inbuilt into Windows 10 TH2 or automatically obtained via Windows Update. Its advised to update your BIOS to the latest revision before proceeding.
A Clean Installation also in general performs better. See here for details:
http://dellwindowsreinstallationguide.com/download-windows-10-oem-and-retail-iso/
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1RkaknDn7v-Ucth4gt0U3BHVSY7oNkWr
Both systems likely have a legacy (non-UEFI) BIOS so take that into account when making the Bootable USB. Although you may want to look at the BIOS settings for the 2011 model to see if there is UEFI support.

I want to know if there are parts in the computer that I won't be able to remove. I have heard that some pre-built PCs have parts in them that you can't remove.

Answer:Does the Dell XPS 8700 have any parts that are not removable?

The CPU, RAM and hard drives are all removeable.
There are plenty of non-standard parts inside the system - it's not clear what you're planning to do, so it's difficult to answer - but the front and rear panel connectors are nonstandard, as is the heatsink assembly and mounting bracket.

So I want to take everything out of my Dell XPS 8700 and move it into a new tower except the motherboard and the CPU because I plan on buying new ones. This is the tower I want to get  And the motherboard that I want to get  I'm not very big on building PC's so I want to know if everything will work out fine.

Answer:Switching towers from Dell XPS 8700

It's not worth building a brand-new system using a power supply that's about four years old, so plan on replacing the power supply as well.  You can't use the RAM from an 8700 system on the new board (it's DDR-3, where the new board requires DDR-4), so that needs to be replaced as well.  Also -- make sure your new CPU comes with a heatsink assembly, as the existing one will not fit the new board.
Also bear in mind you'll need a new Windows license -- the existing one is tied to the Dell system, and cannot be used to activate a Windows install on a new board.
You can carry over your keyboard, mouse, monitor, video card and drives -- not much else will transfer because of the platform change.

Goal: Add a Samsung EVO 500GB 2.5-Inch SATA III Internal SSD and make it the boot disk for a new Dell 8700 running pre-installed Windows 10.
Questions:
Do I have to change the BIOS from IRST to AHCI?
Can I transfer the OS from the original C: drive to the SSD via EasyUS Todo Backup?
Do I need the Windows installation disks?
Background:
Using a StarTEC USB 3.0 to 2.5 SATA III Hard Drive adapter cable, I connected the new SSD to the new Dell 8700 via USB. The Dell transfer tools, and Dell Navigator, did not recognize the SSD. I later read a post that said that these Dell tools did not yet work with Windows 10. As suggested in another post, I did get the transfer to work using EasyUS Todo. I copied Windows 10 to the SSD. I then installed it internally in one of the empty drive bays. Windows 10 file manager recognized the drive and I was able to see that Windows was indeed copied on it.
But, before I change the Boot Sequence to start with the SSD, I would like to know if the OS transfer will indeed work and\or whether the BIOs needs to be changed from IRST to AHCI (if yes, how).
Finally, Windows disks, usually orderable from PC manufacturers, are not yet available from Dell. Alternatively, the “create USB recovery disk” goes in an endless loop even though I am trying to create one using a new 32GB San Disk USB drive.
Any other things I need to do in order to make this SSD boot configuration to work?
Thanks!

Answer:How to add SSD as boot disk on new XPS 8700 with Windows 10?

Sandisks don't seem to work great for Windows Reinstallation Media, there seems to be a lot of issues with them for this purpose. I recommend getting an 8 GB USB and downloading the .iso. See here, start at part 4:

I am having an issue with my XPS 8700. This is my second of this model, as the first failed and was replaced under warranty, but as I recall had the same issue. I am running Windows 10, but the system came with 8.1 installed. This version of the model has a 32GB SSD, as well as a 2.0 TB hard disk.
In the Intel Rapid Storage application the 32 GB SSD shows status as Available, but under the Performance tab I only see Link Power Management settings.
I've dug through the help available from Intel and it appears that the SATA settings in the system's BIOS need to be set for RAID, which my system is not. I've tried changing the setting, but then Windows refuses to boot at all. I had to toggle the SATA setting back for Windows to boot again.
So my question is, was my system never set up to take advantage of the SSD for caching? The BIOS setting are as they were from the factory, so it appears that the SSD feature was never implemented at all. If I read correctly I can switch SATA back to RAID but then I need to reinstall Windows to get the system to boot, which I would like to avoid, as I did it several dozen times with my first, failed system, and twice with this one, which takes forever as the Dell Backup and Recovery app takes me back to Windows 8.1.
So, can I get this working without a reinstall of Windows? I would like to finally take advantage of the hardware I paid for.(I found a 3 year old post with the same question, but the responses were not parti... Read more

Answer:Brand New Dell XPS 8700 - Multiple BSODs

I have debugged the dumps and all seem to have the same error, I have done some research about your crashes and have found some possible causes:

1.) Incorrect BIOS Configuration
2.) Faulty RAM Module

The Fixes for these are as follows:
1.) Restore the BIOS Configuration
-OR-
2.) Remove the faulty RAM.

Modifying BIOS/CMOS settings incorrectly can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly. I cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the configuring of BIOS/CMOS settings can be solved. Modifications of the settings are at your own risk. But it may be the only way to fix the BSOD's you are encountering.

If I was in your position I would try restoring the BIOS first, before trying to remove RAM. If you are ensure on how to restore the BIOS please look at this before trying: How can I reset CMOS or BIOS settings?

I wouldn't try the hard reset unless the normal defaults do not work. If neither work then try removing the RAM.

My dell 0KWVT8 motherboard seems to be underclocking my RAM by over 1000 MHz, and I want to fix it, but I'm worried about messing with bios. Any suggestions? I use PNY Anarchy RAM (Link Here):
When I looked up my RAM in speccy, it says it's only running at 800 MHz, along with the other 8 gb of ram I got with the desktop, that also runs at 800 MHz.

I am thinking about purchasing the STRIX 1080 to upgrade from my STRIX 970. Does the card work with the motherboard that comes with the 8700? Will the card fit (it is 11.73 in)? Will I need a better power supply (I have a 600w PSU installed)? Has anyone tried installing this card into an 8700 before?

This is going to sound stupid/crazy/dumb/etc...but tonight, for the first time, I noticed a flashing white light on the front panel of my Dell XPS 8700...the light is next to the "Mini/MMC SD/RS/SDXC' slot...doesn't appear to have anything to do with putting an SD in. The light is sporadic, sometimes quickly flashing and then nothing..other times multiple flashes. My computer appears to be working fine.
I have searched all over the Dell site and can't find anything...I know on my laptop I have a flashing light next to the battery light..I have always assumed that is the processing light.
I feel like this something I should know; I just want to make sure that it is a normal thing.

Answer:What do the flashing lights mean on the front of the Dell XPS 8700?

Hi Troyj1972
Thanks for writing to us.
Do you see a cylindrical icon beside the light, it indicates the hard drive.
Which means there is a continuous access of data on the system which is indicated by the hard drive activity light. Even if you haven open any programs the HD activity will still blink as the windows is using few backend programs , drivers etc.
The system is working normal, nothing to worry about.
Regards

Easy strait forward upgrade, NO PSU upgrade required, size of the card makes it easy to install, scores better than GTX 980 with less power consumption. Just make sure you clean uninstall the previous card download the driver form Evga for the new one and your done. 10-15 min upgrade.
I don't game so I cant day how well it does but I will be using this for video editing so i will post updates if needed. Here is a bench-test I've done: www.passmark.com/.../display.php

So I just got the Dell XPS 8700 with windows 8.1 64 bit and got it updated and all the latest drivers and was hoping to enjoy some gaming. When I started playing World of Warcraft I noticed I was only getting around 33 FPS when my old xps 9000 with AMD Radeon HD 5770 got 50 - 60 FPS even in well populated areas. I tried everything from turning down the graphic settings in game, adjusting settings on the NVidia control panel as suggested by things found on google and many other things like using vertical sync and 32 bit mode. Nothing has increased my FPS. I know my graphics card isn't that good compared to the others out there since it was built for dell but wow such bad performance. Is there any suggestions to improving this or do I need to replace this graphics card already?

I have two identical Dell XPS 8700 for my kids. They use them mainly for steam games and Office 2016.

Both running the Windows 10 AU.

Today on one of them, by son said a message popped up and asked to stop a service and he clicked yes. Then all there was, was a gray screen and mouse pointer. He came and got me. The pointer would move but nothing else responded. So I did a power shut down. On reboot, the machine took around 40 seconds from seeing the dell logo to the sign on screen. This seemed very long. So I rebooted the other machine to see how long it takes, and it was only 3 seconds from the dell logo to the sign on screen.

I do not know if the long boot time has been going on or just started with this issue.

I ran sfc /scannow and it said no issues.

I remember in September 2015 ( a year ago) I had an issue with this machine where on power on, all I would get is the spinning dots at the Dell logo and it would not boot into windows. I even let it sit there for 24 hours and just spinning dots. I even tried new install of windows where the machine would let me install new windows, but after updates, the same thing happened with the spinning dots.

After a tons of troubleshooting, a dell tech recommended pulling the cmos battery. I did that and from then on it booted fine.

So since the long boot time did not seem right, I pulled the cmos battery again. waited 30 seconds, put it back in and booted into bios, change the clock (not sure if I had to but did), ... Read more

Answer:Dell XPS 8700 Long Boot Time

You might make sure you son takes note of the message if it happens to pop up again.. Knowing what was asking to shut something down and what it wanted to shut down may be helpful. Hopefully it isn't some type of virus.

There could be some type of malfunction with one of the machines, are they both running the same Bios version?

Any other differences with the systems as far as software or hardware?

You might try running a Boot log which you can set from MSconfig.exe. Make one when the system is booting normally so you can compare if the problem occurs again. Save it somewhere else since it will be overwritten by another log. Of course you could use the other system to compare.

I just made a new Complete Factory Restore of my XPS 8700. I used an external WD My Passport drive. I cleaned and reformatted the drive before I started and the creation seems to have been successful.   I wasn't sure how much space it would take so I had this 500GB Passport available. The restore took about 10 GB. MY QUESTION IS : Can I store other folders/files on this drive and it won't mess up the restore function?RegardsJH

Answer:Dell XPS 8700 BACKUP-RESTORE MEDIA

As far as I know yes, just keep your backup files/folders in a single folder in the root directory.  The restore program should ignore it since I believe its just a generic script that it runs.

Will there be a BIOS upgrade to allow the DELL XPS-8700 to work with the soon to be released nVidia GTX1070 and 1080 cards?

Answer:DELL XPS-8700 + nVidia GTX10x0 GPUs

If you have the current bios A10 or later yes.  Older systems will require a bios update.
The A10 bios is here and on the XPS 8700 page here.* Download/Save the file to the windows desktop* Before running A10, I would install the prior Bios in order* Disconnect any external hard drives, keys, printer, scanner, etc. You only want the USB mouse, USB keyboard, LAN, monitor connected* Run the executable from Windows* Allow the system to complete the installation and restart automatically. Do not force a restart or power off===============================

We and Nvidia are looking into the issue, but understand, we only "test/validate" those video cards in my list. Our warranty does not cover non-OEM video cards NOT on our list. I have the Dell XPS 8700 Desktop with a 2TB drive.  If I will be doing some video editing with Adobe Premiere CC, should I store all my video files on the OS C: drive? Or, should I purchase an additional internal hard drive (i'm thinking a WD Black 7200 4TB drive) to work off of?
thanks!

Answer:DELL XPS 8700 Desktop Video Editing

The extra hard drive will help, as it will eliminate contention between the OS and video editing.

After getting a Router with Gigabit Ethernet I attempted to connect my 8700 running Win 10 to the faster speed. My device manager says I have a USB Gigabit adapter which is operating properly.  Network connections says Ethernet 2 has a network cable unplugged. It is the USB gigabit Ethernet adapter. There is only one Ethernet port on the chassis of the 8700. Its operating at 100BaseT. How do I access the 100baseT?

Answer:Dell 8700 USB gigabit Ethernet Adapter

A USB Ethernet adapter isn't the same thing as the onboard NIC.
If you have a USB network adapter, unplug it from USB and connect your Ethernet cable directly into the onboard Ethernet port on rear of PC. Then configure your network settings in Windows.

I have a Dell XPS 8700 system that I need to upgrade the video to drive two 4K Dell monitors.  This is not a gaming system so I would like to keep the cost and power consumption down.  In addition, the ability to drive a third 4K monitor may become important in the future.
The cheapest solution to my problem seems to be the AMD FirePro W4100 2Gb Cards. Unfortunately, these cards are not specifically listed as compatible with the XPS 8700.
Questions:1. Is there any reason why these cards would not work in an XPS 8700?
2. There seems to be multiple versions of the same card being sold by Dell.  In some cases the difference seems to be the bracket height, but otherwise there seems to be no explanation for the price difference.
Any clue why these parts have such different prices, and why the kit versions are cheaper?  Which one would be best for me?

Am seeing a problem I haven't seen before. When I put the ATI HD 5770 card in the Dell XPS 8700 and reboot the computer to install the driver, I see a black, blank screen, no video. I know that the system is booting from the sounds, but no video. I've tried using both DVI ports on the back of the card, booting in safe mode, but just not seeing any video.

The only thing that I can think of to try is uninstalling the previous card that's being replaced, Nvidia GT 720, and booting with the new card installed. But I'm not sure that'll help, I just don't understand why I'm not getting basic, legacy video when I reboot the computer with the HD 5770 installed.

Any ideas?

My PC went into a restore mode on its own after locking up.  It had been updated to Win10, but after the restore it was back to Win7.  Most of my files are there along with MS Ofiice and the related data files.  Missing are my email program (Mozilla) and files and my Quicken and files.  There are a number of locked files that return "access denied" when I try to open the file or directory.  I'm guessing everythign is there, just hidden.  i have not reinstalled Mozilla or Qbooks yet, just in case that buries the files deeper.
Someone suggested i reinstall Win10....MS said they would give me another install for free after the 7/29 deadline, but again, I want to see if I can recover my files.  There is no restore point to go back to since the Dell utility ran.  Any direction will be appreciated.

What follows is the text of the initial message that I posted at the Dell Desktop Forum regarding this problem:
Running Windows 7 Professional 64 bit, Service Pack 1 on a Dell XPS 8700 Special Edition PC.  I am experiencing audio distortion/breakup & dropouts/skips when playing music from the computer through headphones or external speakers.  The problem occurs whether the source is iTunes, Windows Media or the optical drives.  The longer the listening time, the more frequent & severe the errors become.  When listening to ripped copies of the same music through an iPod connected directly to the audio system or headphones, no errors occur.  I have installed an ASUS Xonar U7 external sound card.  This seems to have improved the overall sound but it has not solved the distortion issue.  The relevant drivers appear to be up to date.  Any suggestions?  Thanks.
After a series of exchanges with Chris M, and performing actions suggested by him that included establishing that the Onboard Audio Controller was disabled & removal of the program REALTEK HIGH DEFINITION AUDIO DRIVER, Chris M's latest reply was:
I do not think that this is a computer hardware issue. The fact that both the Realtek and the 3rd party Xonar both have the issue points to the operating system resource allocation has the problem. You need to repost the issue on the Microsoft Operating System board to get their thoughts and opinions.

Before you go getting a new hard drive, I also had this issue. There are two versions of Win 7, one includes drivers and one doesn´t. Try this: go into your device manager and scan down to find your Audio then look to see if there are any big yellow questions marks. These will be missing or out of date drivers. Update or install these drivers then see how you go. Control panel> sound> test. Good luck.

I currently own a Dell 8700 XPS.  I am running Windows 7 Home premium.  It has an i7-4790 and it won't turbo boost.  I have checked the settings to make sure it is enabled.  When I run AIDA64 Extreme, it ramps up to 3.59 but won't push past that.  The temperatures are all good, I believe the highest it gets is 72 degrees C on one core with and average of 68 degrees C for the the processor.  I only run the test for 10 minutes.  I recently updated the bios from the Dell Support page and it is running version A11.
I also downloaded and ran Intel's processor diagnostic and it passed.  Dell's CPU scan didn't detect any errors either.
Any suggestions?

Answer:Need some help with Dell 8700 XPS i7-4790 - won't turbo boost

Can we double check your cpu clock measurements?
What are you using to measure core processor speeds?
I suggest HWiNFO64 as it shows per-core clock and current/min/max
Another good tool is Intel XTU.

Because of the software I use, I definitely have to use Windows 7.   I'm open to any upgrades and I am more concerned about things running smoothly and problem free rather than price.

I already have 16GB of RAM, and a 2TB SSD.
What would you suggest as far as power supply, graphics card, or whatever, to be able to run smoothly a 5K monitor?

Thanks in advance!

For the record, my service tag is JZG98Y1, and im running Windows 10 Pro 64-Bit by way of the free upgrade period long ago; I received a BD-R disc I ordered on amazon just days after I ordered a blu-ray disc drive that I could use with it (and yes, its from amazon, from my understanding, not part of the warranty connected to my computer, so if the drive breaks, no help from dell), and I just now used the Dell Datasafe Local Backup utility to create a recovery disc
From my understanding, this software (outdated as it is) takes the recovery partition on my computer (which has been completely left alone, not modified or tampered with) and burns it to a BD-R disc of mine, therefore copying it in its entirety; I MUST have confirmation on this next part of my question (from official dell support and the community here)
IF, for WHATEVER reason there can be, the recovery partition and the Hard Drive with the installed OS on my computer gets corrupted/F.U.B.A.R's somehow, and I have to order a replacement hard drive, could I essentially used the recovery disc to reinstall the OS (Windows 7 Pro 640bit) included onto the replacement hard drive(along with whatever software came with it at the time), or must the recovery partition stay intact for the "Dell Datasafe Local Backup Recovery Disc" to work

Answer:Dell XPS 8700 Recovery Disc question

DBAR and Dell Data Safe are both End of Life and End of Support.  Windows 7 is in extended support mode to be end of life in 2020.  Upgrading windows BREAKS the recovery partition.  Windows 7 cannot be recovery installed over the top of windows 10.
Upgrading breaks the DBAR so you might as well get rid of it entirely.   DBAR is now also END OF LIFE END OF SUPPORT.
I recommend
