How did this passive display adapter do the job that should have needed an active adapter?

Question: How did this passive display adapter do the job that should have needed an active adapter?

Hi,Our 7040 minitower has two standard (not ++) DisplayPorts. Our monitor is dvi-D (dual-link). Dell supplied the tower with a DisplayPort to dvi adapter. The advice received was that this adapter wouldn't work because it was passive. However, hooked it up and the dvi-D (dual-link) monitor displayed perfectly.Would anyone know why this adapter succeeded (when apparently it shouldn't have)?

Preferred Solution: How did this passive display adapter do the job that should have needed an active adapter?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: How did this passive display adapter do the job that should have needed an active adapter?

Its not a passive adapter.
HDMI is bi directional and passive.
Display port is not.

I just purchased an EVGA GTX 1060 and I have 2 monitors that have a DVI port and a VGA port. If I use a DVI to display port adapter or cable, does the adapter or cable need to be passive or active?

I am awaiting delivery of my T620 Thin Client with Windows 10 IoT Enterprise and integrated AMD Radeon HD 8330E graphics. There are two Displayports which I want to connect to two monitors with DVI inputs, so I will need 2 Displayport to DVI adapters. I am confused about whether or not I need to buy more expensive "active" adapters or whether two "passive" adapters will be sufficient. Any helpful advice regarding which adapters I need will be appreciated.

I have an old Acerview 54el which was upgraded to Win 98 but now will only display 16 colours, Acers website do not support this model any more, and the driver is not on driverzone or any other sites I can find. Hoping someone will have a 95,98 or ME driver which will solve the problem. Thanks in Advance

Answer:Acerview 54el display adapter needed

You don't require drivers for monitors - all they use is an inf file (list of supported parameters). You can safely use the Acer15p inf file, which is in Windows as standard. I use it for any monitor that windows doesn't have a particular inf file for.Just don't try and set the refresh/resolution higher than the mintor can support.

I know there are several threads but they are with different cards and they didn't solve my issue...

I bought a new MEDION AKOYA P5334E and the system arrived installed normally with win7 home edition.

I've installed on the computer the win7 enterprise edition (x64) and many drivers could not be find. I've installed nost of them, except the display adapter.
It's stuck on "standard vga graphic adapter".
I have the AMD Radeon HD7570 card but no matter what I try is not working!!!
tried to uninstall the current driver, tried to download the driver from the AMD website (when executing it - it's running but does nothing).
when executed the auto detect from AMD website, I got the message "we were unable to find your product or OS"

Will be greatful for any help!!!
Thanks a lot!!!

Answer:display adapter is stuck on standard vga adapter

Welcome to the Sevem Forums, Oraz.

If you still have the DVD of Windows 7 home edition and if it is also 64-bit then you might find the graphics adapter driver there which might get installed. Otherwise try installing Graphics Card AMD Radeon HD7570 in Windows XP SP3 mode.

Another option is to try installing the Graphics Card AMD Radeon HD7570 that you have downloaded in the safe mode. In case the this driver gets loaded in the safe mode then it shall install too.

I guess that I don't know what you mean by "restore." System restore in XP? Restore CDs or partition?

Have you tried simply deleting the listed device...then rebooting and reinstalling the drivers for the system NIC?

I am running XP Home and had a trojan get in from a download. I saw it come in and removed it, but it had already messed with my display drivers. The last time I saw anything on the screen, the adapter driver was 'unknown' and the monitor driver was 'unknown'. I have restarted in safe mode and also loaded the boot options menu and started xp with 'last known good configuration'. Still nothing. When bios is loading, I can see the screen just fine. When xp starts loading, the screen goes blank, no matter if in safe mode or not, and thats it. How do I make the saveVGA enabled or reinstall my adapter driver without being able to see the screen?

I have read in many article about passive and avtice,,,some of these article:

1- Passive and Active FTP.

2- Passive and Active mode for VLAN Trunk between switches.

3- Passive and Active Cisco router Interface.

4- Passive and Active Hub.

What do word paasive and active mean in general ?

Answer:Passive and Active Terminology

Well in each example they are a little different if I had more time I would include more links -

Here's FTP -

Active And Passive Hubs - about half way down
Usually the Passive means finds its own way OR does not alter the signal. While active is something that is more a direct router or is regenerating a signal or does somthing actively to the connection. The best thing to do is take this meaning on a device by device or an application by application basis.

Howdy, I'm seeing a lot of posts saying I can connect a T520 to a WQXGA monitor using an Active DisplayPort->DL-DVI adapter. I've got a BizLink brand one which has been confirmed working. But when I use this with my T520 the maximum resolution it offers me is 2048x1536 (this is 4:3) resolution. Is there something I need to do to get access the WQXGA resolution? I tried creating a 2560x1600 resolution but it just comes up with an error message saying it is not supported.

Answer:T520 and WQXGA (2650x1600) resolution with Active DisplayPort->DL-DVI adapter

if that is the maximum resolution it is offering then it is not running in dual link mode. What is the model no. of your Bizlink active DP to DL DVI adapter.

I had a question regarding a problem I am having at one of my offices:

End users are connecting to cloud FTP sites via filezilla from our office. WiFi users connecting to the FTP site have to enable active mode, while wired users have to enable passive mode in order to access FTP sites outside of our office. They are on the same vlan with same policies.

We have a Sonicwall TZ105, ,a few managed switches, and an aruba WiFi network.

Why would that kind of change be necessary for ftp to work?

Answer:FTP Passive and Active modes Question

FTP clients should almost always be using passive mode, it is just easier that way. Active mode gets blocked by NATs, Firewalls, etc unless you add configuration. So the question is why do wifi users have to use active mode.

Hello All. I am looking to connect my PC with a Asus H-97 Pro motherboard, which has a HDMI out, DVI out to a Dell monitor with VGA input. VGA out on the CPU is already connected to the first monitor. Now I read that since HDMI, DVI are digital signals and VGA is analog, there is no way a passive 'converter' can be used to connect. But then I always read such mixed reviews of such passive cables where one says it doesn't work, while the other says its perfect! Couple of videos where passive cables worked to connect HDMI out to VGA input. So I wonder how is it working for them? Where is the conversion happening for them? When and what exactly is this passive HDMI to VGA cable used for? Do they work for gaming stations and not CPUs?What is the trick to figuring out active or passive when connecting digital out to analog in? Is it safe to assume that it definitely requires an active circuitry? Coming back to my situation, what type of adapter should I buy? I have a HDMI out, DVI-D dual link out on my CPU and a VGA input Dell Monitor.Thank you!

This is my first post so apologies as I'm sure this is probably "an old chesnut" but I can't find my way round enough to find the answer.

My system is XP sp2 with ie7 as my browser (?). When running a "Diagnose Connection Problems" the FTP error 12029 is reported in active and passive modes. I'm sure I've encountered this before but don't know how it was resolved, although a destructive (ouch) restore springs to mind - my computer won't do a non-destructive for reasons only it knows.

I don't know if the above is a result of the following or the other way around but I have the following problems as well. If they need separate posts then please advise where.

I believe my computer has been compromised!! I cannot access the Microsoft Update Site (error 0x80072EE7) and Google searches are being redirected (some automatically) to "dodgy" sites. This is more worrying for me as last time this happened I lost everything.

Not very brief I'm sorry. Thanks to anyone who takes the time to reply.

Answer:Active or Passive? HDMI/DVI to VGA conversion

Let me do a quick response.Don't bu anything. Not yet. Consider all your options carefully, HDMI to VGA conversion and the other way can be a disaster.....After giving this some thought here's what I'm thinking. I am thinking you could buy yourself another graphics card that will provide you the output you need. Here's my reasoning. Doing the conversion of HDMI to VGA requires the use of an active adapter that only works in one direction. Here's the problem. Some of the adapters people want to sell you are wrong way adapters you ask for HDMI to the VGA  and they'll try to sell you the opposite. They might try to sell you a VGA to HDMI active adapter. And there's no such thing as any passive adapter that converts digital to analog or analog-to-digital. Not really. The cost of a good active adapter may be about the same price as what you would pay for a good used dual VGA monitor.Just about a week ago had to go through some of this stuff myself. At the present time you can pick up a very good television set with an HDMI input for a very reasonable price. You might consider the value of your current VGA monitor. What is it worth? If you want to keep using the VGA monitors I strongly recommend you go get a dual graphics card that has two VGA outputs. The card does not have to be expensive . In most cases any kind of PCI graphics card will outperform the built-in graphics on the motherboard. Actually, I really don't know what graphics you... Read more

Guys I have a bit of a problem here.... I'm not sure how familar any of you are with call recording when it comes to IP phones.

Currently we have a customer who has a "passive" solution. What happens in a passive solution is that we setup span ports to get the RTP traffic, which contains the audio over to the recorder. It filters by IP address and is able to peice together calls.

We are currently installing an ACTIVE solution. What happens in this scenario is within the Cisco CUCM we configure the phones to create a duplicate copy of the audio via Built in Bridge, and ACTIVELY send us the RTP stream.

The problem is that the customer needs the passive and active solution to work at the same time.

Heres the dillema....

Since their current recorder is spanning all traffic from the phone; not only is it getting the "normal" call traffic, but at the same time all the Built in Bridge traffic is getting spanned as well.

Their recorder is gettin confused and dropping the employee side of the call. It maintains the customer side of the call because in a passive environment that audio doesnt come from the phone.

Soooo..... Current recorder is getting confused because its seeing TWO copied streams from the same IP address and dropping it.

How to fix? Is it possible to configure Windows firewall to block traffic from only specific portions of this span? How we keep the "Built in Bridge" traffic from reaching their c... Read more

Answer:IP Phone Recording Active/Passive

Depends on how it's physically setup.

I'd configure an ACL so your active stream is dropped. Just block traffic destined for the IP of the active recorder.

Hi, I joined Lenovo Community specifically to ask this question. I am in the UK and have purchased a Lenovo Ideacentre B540-41  23? Touchscreen 3D All-in-one PC from Currys PC World. I am asking if the Active 3D feature is actually Passive 3D, based on my experience. Currys PC World says ?With active 3D technology you can step up your entertainment and view content in a whole new light", and states that the PC has a ?LED Active 3D" as well as (Nvidia) 3D Vision graphics. But the two pairs of 3D glasses supplied with the B540 are passive, non-powered, polarised glasses instead of the battery operated, active shutter glasses that work with an Active 3D screen. As far as I know, Active 3D and Passive 3D systems are incompatible. That is, you cannot use passive glasses to view 3D images on an active 3D screen and vice versa. Yet these passive 3D glasses actually work in letting you view 3D images on the Lenovo B540 screen! So is the B540 equipped for Passive 3D? Or, have Lenovo found a way to let you view a passive 3D image on an active 3D screen?  Why does it matter? Firstly I bought the machine based on the advertised specifications. If the 3D specification is actually passive 3D instead of active 3D then that is a breach of trade descriptions and the law. Secondly, as a user, I obviously need to know what my PC's 3D capabilities are in ord... Read more

Having a Dell 30" 2560x1600 as my primary monitor, I was keen to get the W520 hooked up. I was very disappointed that the rather expensive Lenovo docking options do not have dual link DVI. I opted for the BizLink device from ebay costing a £29 + £9 postage to Spain. I bought it from artintel77 It took me a while to realise that in windows 7, you have to say "connect to a projector" to get it to use the device.  Less logical than XP. The results, however, are perfect.  The image is rock solid, and as far as I can see is as good as my desktop with a £400 graphics card with dual dual-link DVI ports.  Im running the monitor at its native resolution and colour depth (32bit).   Even without profile or calibration, the colours are far better than on the laptops native IPS 1080p panel - which has reds which are so oversaturated, the firefox logo looks like a crimson square. It is a solidly built unit with high quality cables. It gets warm but not hot.You will have to sacrifice a USB port to power it. The external panel is driven by the Thinkpads quadro dedicated card - Not sure if the Intel HD 3000 will support this resolution (although it should). Overall, I am very pleased with the device, and can recommend it. Update: the device died after 3 weeks with no issues.  Not able to get any help from the Ebay seller.  Avoid.

The FHD screen is TN.Wide gamut monitors will definitely oversaturate images built for normal displays (such as the Firefox logo).

I have a DELL laptop running windows 7 and I am completely confused by the power setting for cooling:under power options advanced settings there is a setting for active or passive cooling either plugged in or battery:It says for an "active" cooling policy to SLOW the processor before INCREASING fan speed. For "passive" it says INCREASE the fan speed BEFORE slowing the processor. This makes no sense. Shouldn't it be the opposite? It seems like my fan runs too much even when the computer is just idling and I"m trying to stop it. Any other ideas?

Answer:Active vs Passive Cooling in power settings?

set too active, the processor will slow, but your not likely to notice, thus it will stay cooler, and the fan will not have to work so hard...close all extra process's like indexing and search, which may set to run when the system is not in use, check the settings for anti virus, when it runs etc etc..if your fan is running a lot, and its an older computer you should try a can of compressed air and blow out the dust, or vacuum all the vents, it may be that you need to reseat the cooler and put on fresh thermal paste..if its new take it back to the shop and ask them to this for you.i hate computers!but cant help myself....

Hi there,Is there a general consensus as to the 'best' settings for the Processor Power Management System Cooling Policy on a Windows 7 netbook? I gather that passive slows the processor before increasing the fan whilst active increases fan speed before slowing processor. I'm guessing that on battery passive is the way to go to preserve battery whilst on mains power active is the natural way to go.

The eBay adapters from China are very inexpensive, arrive fairly quickly, and work great, in our experience... We have paid as low as $12.50 US with shipping included, with luck as good as any packaged unit from England, Germany or the US of A.

The tricky part is the size of the plug then goes into the Screen socket, so shop carefully.

I am looking into buying a flat panel monitor and am not sure what type to get. I see ones that are active matrix and some passive matrix. What is the difference? If someone would be able to explain to me the different types and opinions on which is the best and/or re-direct me to a website which explains it I would be very thankful. TIA

Answer:Flat Panel Monitors: Active vs passive matrix.

Hello Hajile,
Active Matrix screens cost a little more, but look much better, and register picture changes faster. These differences are hard to explain if you do not see them, but they are VERY noticable. So much so that the average Passive Matrix screen will bug you even if you never see an active matrix one in operation. They are still a good option for lower cost though, and provide a usable, but sometimes annoying, picture.

Another difference is that an Active Matrix screen can be read from any angle but a Passive Matrix screen is hard to read from anywhere except center.

You could reasonably expect to pay about 50% more for an Active Matrix than a Passive Matrix.
Hope this helps.

Hello, I would love to ask for some help!
I've recently purchased the newer Dell XPS 13 9360 Non-touch (not the 2 in 1) and am having some trouble with using an external monitor. The screen (on the external monitor) keeps on flickering and has a very unstable connection.
I've searched and found that apparently lowering the power output of the WIFI network adapter can fix this problem.
The problem is that the current XPS's wifi adapter doesn't allow the power output to be changed. The previous fixes were geared towards intel wifi adapters.
The general power settings for the computers doesn't show wifi card power controls.

I have updated all the drivers for the computer including the wireless adapter. Still the options doesn't change.

Has anyone found a way to get a stable external monitor to work with the Killer Wireless Adapter cards?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Answer:XPS 13 9360 External Monitor Flicker with USB C - HDMI Adapter [Killer Wireless Adapter]

For what it's worth: For me (XPS 13 9360, QHD, i7, 16 GB, Killer WiFi), external screens are perfectly stable, even with wireless being on relatively high throughput load, albeit not high power (energy) load.
I am connecting both HDMI and DisplayPort displays, each with cheap native USB-C adapters (i.e. through Thunderbolt). I also have full success with a Dell DA200, through its built-in HDMI graphics adapter.

There are some of devices that were mission from device manager.
At first, there was a problem with wireless adapter, I couldn't enable it.
I tried to reinstall drivers serveral times, but it didn't fix the problem.
So i reformat my system, 2 times. the problem is still existing.
It's getting worst, now i can't find wireless network adapter, lan network adapter and card reader in device manager.
It is weird that sometime the  wireless adapter appears in device manger, those 2 devices come back too.
I am quite sure that my wireless adapter hardware is ok because i did replace new wireless adapter but the problem still exist.
I ran some antivirus tools, antimalware tools, non of them return infected.
The weirdest issue is that my wireless adapter comes with bluetooth adapter.
but only bluetooth adapter can be used, it works perfectly fine.
Could you please take a look at this problem, im at the deadend. this is the weirdest problem i ever had with  my laptop and pc.

I have two problems so i will explain the scenario then number out the issue. I had a new hard drive installed, when i booted the laptop, it worked well. The wifi in my area is very low so I was told I can use a wireless adpter to "boost" the signal strength received. I was given a Encore ENUWI-N3 Wireless Adapter to use. I installed the utility program from the official website and the computer still did not recognise the device, so I deleted the program. I then lost connection to the internet, and at the time i thought the wifi can dropped (i later realised that was not the case since my phone's wifi was still connected). I then reinstalled the software ( the executible file was saved on the harddrive), and it give me the same message that there are no drivers for the adapter.

I shifted my attention to my failed internet connection, after troubleshooting it give me a error 28 message stating that there were no drivers installed for the Broadcom wireless adapter that is internally installed. I tried a system restore to before i tried installing the Encore adapter, and still nothing, the system continued to give me the same message and it registered in the "device manager" as unknown device named "ethernet controller" with a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark. I have been able to borrow a laptop and download the LAN adapter fron the ACER support website, and although it had no "set up.exe" file visible i was able to get... Read more

So, just before I upgraded to the latest build, I had bridged my network connection, for the purpose of running my Xbox 360 through my laptop, as a passthrough/ Wifi device, as I have before. However, I had forgotten to disable ICS on the adapter properties and needed to go back in to the properties, however, having upgraded to the latest build, I can no longer right-click on the adapter to get the context menu, or double-click on it to automatically get into properties. Consequently, this means I also cannot unbridge a connection should I wish to. What happens when I try to perform either, is the screen goes blank for a little and the entire control panel window closes. Any ideas?

Answer:Why can't I access network adapter properties, nor right-click on the adapter after the latest build?

Some answer about this issue? I have the same problem. After upgrading to build 10240 from 10130, I cannot open the properties of any network connections. Inmediatly I right clic WiFi or Lan connection or what ever to view or change configuration, just the network connections window is closed. This happened the same when I upgraded to build 10162 from 10130 and I had to do a rollback. Build 10130 works fine. Pls help me.

Hey guys,

Recently, i bought an ASUS PCE-N13 802.11b/g/n Wireless PCI-E Adapter and am experiencing a major problem.

It is connected through the PCI-E x1 bus on my ASUS P4X58D Premium mobo. I have installed the driver from the CD, but my problem is the adapter not enabling. What happens is, i click enable, the window pops up and says enabling...enabled, but on the network connections screen, it still stays disabled. i have tried various solutions such as un-installing the driver and re-installing one from the official asus website (both drivers ended up being the same). My router is a Netgear DGN2000, but surely, that can't have anything to do with this. Device manager says the device is working properly, but when i run the diagnostic scan from the network connections window, i get the following report

Windows couldn't automatically bind the IP protocol stack to the network adapter.

Reason why i chose this one was because both my pci buses were blocked by my GTS250's and trust me, i cant move them to the third pci-e slot because in my case, the psu is on the BOTTOM and my gpu is too fat.

the utilities that also came with the CD were the ASUS WLAN Control Centre and WPS Wizard. When i launch the WPS Wizard, it says that there is no ASUS wireless adapter connected. The back led on the card is... Read more

I have my AWUS036H for a few months now and it worked perfect until now.
My landlord has a router in his appartment and I need to connect to that router to get access to the internet.
I bought this adapter for a better signal but this week I got a very weird problem.
My adapter can find all the networks surrounding it except my landlord his network. But my inbuilt adapter can find my landlord's network and all the others. To clarify, here an example:

AUS036H finds:
Neighbour1 (strong signal)
Neighbour2 (strong signal)

Inbuilt adapter finds:
Neighbour1 (weak signal)
Neighbour2 (weak signal)
Landlord's network (weak signal)

What is going on? It drives me nuts!

Thanks in advance

Answer:AWUS036H adapter can't find specific network but inbuilt adapter can

Here is the problem, the AWUS036H can only see b or g signals, it's not 802.11n capable so it can't see N only signals. The Landlord has a router which is set to broadcast the faster setting which is 802.11n only, not mixed with b or g because that would limit the connection speed to 54Mbps.

This means that you can't see his N only signal because the AWUS036H isn't N capable. No doubt the inbuilt adaptor is N capable.

You really need to get one that can pick up b, g and more importantly n which is much faster and usually has more range.

I registered to forums to get help to solve wireless adapter issue I am having.

I have been looking for help in Lenovo forums and AV provider: problem is still on.

I changed AV software from Symantec to F-Secure. I uninstalled Symantec software and installed F-Secure software. Laptop is Lenovo T520.

What happened

First I recognized that ping commands caused Windows to crash. Then I uninstalled some VPN softwares and ping started to work. Operation did something to wireless and LAN connections, they did not work anymore.

LAN started to work by removing LAN drivers from device manager and reboot. After reboot Windows reinstalled LAN drivers and LAN was ok.

Wireless is a pain in there. I have tried almost everything. All Lenovo provided network softwares and power management tools are uninstalled and reinstalled together with wireless drivers. Wireless driver is not recognized by Windows.

None of automatic repairs or wifi uninstallation operations have corrected problem.

I collected some logs which might help, but now I do not know how to proceed. Windows reinstallation is something which I do not want to do.

I have an Inspiron 6000 (home) running XP and a Latitude D610 (XP) that I used to be able to use interchangably with a Comcast modem and a Netgear WGR614 router. A couple of weeks ago, my internet connections slowed and now have ended.

After several phone calls to Comcast, the last tech told me the problem was "the network address showing in the device manager is different than the network address that shows in the TCIP/IP settings." I am getting an error message of "network cable unplugged" on the Inspiron and the red X on the second of the two adapters (1st is 1394; 2nd is Broadcam 440x 10/100). I can get internet from the Latitude when directly connected to the cable modem, but not when routed through the router for wireless.

We have tried multiple reconfig of the IP, shutting everything down (computers, router, modem) all with no success. Any help anyone can provide would be great--I still need to order Christmas presents.

After upgrading to Windows 8.1, things were working fine until about 100+ updates came through... and now these TAP-Windows Adapter V9 and TAP-Win32 Adapter OAS drivers are installing over and over again. I uninstall the drivers and they come back, I
disable them, and they re-enable themselves. I have looked up answers to this issue, and I do not use a none of that applies to me.

The unfortunate part is that I get constant interruptions with my internet and don't even want to touch my laptop hardly anymore because of this...but I need to because I am trying to start a business and get back into school. The only way I can get the
internet to work again is to disable the drivers, and troubleshoot my wireless adapter. It renews the wireless adapter, the internet works for anywhere between one minute to an hour before I have to troubleshoot again.

HELP?? How to I block those drivers? There needs to be a Microsoft Removal Tool and a major update...
I tried to add a screenshot, but it took so long to verify me that I had already deleted it after 4 days.

I had to reinstall windows 7 on my acer aspire 5560g laptop, I installed the drivers on the Acer site. I found the legacy updates for my cards and installed them. And I am still having problems.

The monitor is not showing the native resolution of 1366 x 768, it's topping out at 1024 x 768, it's refusing to let me use the built in screen savers. It's supposed to be a duel graphics system and the device manager lists two under the display drivers. Both are listed as standard vga display. One with the little yellow exclamation mark. It's driving me nutty. Can someone help me?

thanks for looking in and trying to help. I have a laptop with Windows 7 on it, and as usual today the laptop's screen frame also accomodates the internal Wireless Internet antenna. I am able to use the existing networks when they are close enough to me.

But I wanted to have a better reception, so I bought one of those USB-based Wireless Internet Adapters (WIA) which have mounted a little 5 dBi antenna (dBi = Decibel) on its side. I bought recently a much larger 22 dBi antenna, which I can use to replace the smaller antenna on that WIA. Windows also recognized the USB device correctly (please see the screenshot link:, but the connection tool at the lower right side of Windows (system tray area) displays only those networks which the internal screen frame antenna captures.

I tried already to disable the internal antenna, but then I don't get any network. Why can't the Network Connection icon not show networks the USB WIA might capture? What is it I am doing wrong?

Please don't mind to ask me for additional details here, I will provide them as additional details.

Hey, I wanted to put some new games on my Laptop, and I got the Direct X 9.0c Compatible Graphics Adapter message. So I went online, and was instructed to go onto Device Manager and I found I had Standard VGA Graphics Adapter, so then I got some kind of update checker and it looked through my hardware and found that my Graphic Adapter needed updating...

Hello, this problem has really confuzzled me. I have just bought a new wireless USB adapter, ran it through the setup entered the password etc. Fine. Nicely connects to the router everytime (well ok most the time). But it cant seem to find the internet, which i know is there because my house mate has no problems with it. I've read quite a few complaints about this adapter. Is it worth just returning it and trying a different one? Or does anyone have any ideas?

It finds the submask, ip address, sets a channel automatically. One thing i noticed though is it doesnt create a gateway. (i asume cos i cant find the net). I did have internet before but they were wired. I've since then disabled the normal ethernet adapter and disabled the old connections. So i dont think theres anything conflicting.

Please help?!!
Thank you in advance i really appreciate it.

Answer:Belkin Wireless adapter - can connect to the adapter, but not the internet!!!

I'm going to guess that the IP address that it finds is 169.254.x.x and the subnet mask is, right? It's really NOT connecting to the router, which is why you don't have a Default Gateway or DNS servers.

You don't have to disable the wired interface to connect wirelessly, there's no conflict.

I'd suggest you first disable the encryption and see if it connects. If it does, then you need to make sure you enter matching passwords for the encryption on each end. Note that for WEP you should ONLY use the HEX password, do not use the passcode option.
Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.

The name of your ISP and country of residence.
Make/model of the broadband modem. If dial-up, please specify.
Make/model of the router (if any).
Connection type, wired, wireless.
If wireless, encryption used, (WEP, WPA, WPA2, etc.)
Make/model of network card or wireless adapter.
Make/model of your computer (motherboard if home-built).
Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP-Home (or XP-Pro), SP2.

It looks promising until the end where is says it cannot install it as there was an error and somthing about code 10?? what am i doing wrong? i have followed the instructions word for word and I still keep getting this message.Any help would be much appreciated =)Tom

Answer:Help needed for belkin wireless adapter

Hi Tomdude,Try uninstalling the drivers. Clear all remnants manually. When you reinstall be sure to close all other windows and any programs that don't need to be running. Follow the directions and plug in the USB when asked. If this fails, groan inwardly and maybe clench your fist. When you've done this look on the back of your adaptor for the model number (mine's a F5D7050).Google 'Belkin driver adaptor 'model number'. This will take you to Belkin's drivers page. Download the driver from the site and try again. Good luck!

Assuming D-link hasn't really screwed me over with this 1.21A firmware on the DGL4500 and I can keep that router and count on it...this is a big if...I'm currently using their DWA160 USB adapter for the computer that's two floors away from the router and I simply have never been very confident or satisfied with its performance. It's awfully fickle. Now I realize being two floors away from the router and all that I shouldn't expect miracles but shy of moving the computer closer to the router, which I wish I could do but simply can't...can I do any better than what I've got?

Would a change in adapters to one with antennas, like the DWA 552 or 556, be any better?

I'm not married to any one brand, either. I have no brand loyalty or preference whatsoever.
Maybe MOCA is an option for me? I'll do what it takes. I wish I could move that computer closer to the router but it just isn't viable at present.

Cliff notes? Seriously though without spending the rest of my life reading all those posts what exactly is the issue? You realize of course that WAPs with omnidirectional antennas send out signal in a toroidal plane, i.e. a donut, of around 12° on the Z-axis. If you are two floors away from the WAP you probably are on the edge of the cell which would account for the shoddy connectivity.

Buy a yagi antenna and point it at your host using a decent WAP. Then get rid of the USB adapter and get a PCI card with an external antenna as well.

I'm not against USB. Given the "in a corner" position of the computer, I was thinking an external antenna may be preferred.

Please include products links to an online seller with the recommendation(s). Thanks!

Hello, currently I run a wired connection at my house, but when I go to my buddies we all end up using wireless. There is usually 4 of us there every week and i am getting sick of having to drag my old Microsoft branded Xbox wireless adapter. I hate moving it around all the time, and i want to find something easier.

My friends either have built in wireless (Asus mobo, dell laptop card) or use a linksys usb adapter. I would like an internal card that works well, has an attached antenna (no screw ons that have a cord to a antenna that is physically separated from the computer). I use a fragbox 2 case which has a lip above the pci brackets, so the antenna has to have some clearance. I can find pictures if you don't know what I'm talking about.

Both of us use WRT54G ( I have v5 not sure on his version). I want to be able to have a reliable connection, and something i can disable when I'm at home. Can anyone recommend me a product. Thanks for doing this in advance . If you could link me to the product page or a site where i can purchase it, that would be nice to

The challenge is simple enough ..... I need to fit a new SATA DVD-RW drive to an older PC with only IDE connections.
PC World have sold me a "Bi-Directional IDE to SATA Adapter" and I've given it my best shot without success !
I have connected the adapter to the motherboard at the socket that previously carried the IDE cable to the dead IDE drive so that old IDE cable is now disconnected. I have connected the power cable (supplied with the kit) to the adapter at one end and a spare MOLEX power supply at the other. I then connected the SATA data cable to the adapter at one end and the DVD-RW drive at the other ...... and that's it.
I'm a bit bothered that the ONLY connection at the DVD-RW end is the data cable and the SATA Power socket on the back of the DVD-RW drive has nothing connected to it. I returned to PC World as I figured that can't be right and, after talking to three different techies, I was told that the power to the DVD-RW drive is carried via the data cable (I'm really suspicious about that explanation but who am I to argue with the experts !).
I have booted up the PC and no sign of the DVD-RW or any power to it.
At the start of boot-up, I get a stalled black screen which includes the message .....
DRIVE 2 not found: Parallel ATA, PATA-0 (PRI IDE Master)
DRIVE 3 not found: Parallel ATA, PATA-1 (PRI IDE Master)
I'm obviously doing something very wrong here so can somebody put me out of my misery ?
Any help appreciated !

Answer:Help needed with fitting an IDE to SATA adapter !

but who am I to argue with the experts
You are having a laugh surely.
You do need to connect a power supply to the Sata DVD drive.
Can you post a link to the thing you bought?

Greetings All,  I purchased a T43 2668-Q1U from an e-tailer. My question is with so many IBM part numbers for their accessories, I saw on the support page for this type and model a 92P1017,19, and 21 are the correct adapters . Also too, a 02K6699 on the Accessories page fits also. I need a 72 watt, 16 volt, 4.5 amp type of an original IBM branded (logo on the one side).   Any assistance greatly appreciated to head me in the right direction. The current battery is of 10.8v 4.4AH. A 9 cell of greater AH is also a thought for the future.Thank you,Donald

Question: No Display Adapter

So I was givin this Vaio VGC-RB30 from a coworker. It had Windows XP Home Edition on it, and it was running horribly so I decided to use a Windows XP Pro disk on the computer. I reformatted to NSFS and loaded up pro.

Everything runs normally but I play this game (Maple Story) and when I try starting it I get an error message. From talking with their support team I came to find that I don't have the option Display Adapter in the Device Manager. Thu further research and help from them it seems I don't have a driver for my display card or monitor. I have tried to download both of these with no success. Says I don't meet the requirements or some other error. Also I haven't been able to download Itunes or a few other little things. With a bit of research on the tower I learned this model never came with XP Pro. Only HE and ME.

So I'm not to sure what to do about my situation apart from putting a new OS on here. I was leaning towards HE because that's what the computer came with stock.

Also an extra piece of info that may be helpful is that my graphics card is a Intel GMA 900. And my monitor is an HP vs17e

Thanks for taking the time to read this and I hope someone can help, I've been dealing with this all day and all my research hasn't seemed to solve this problem.

Question: Display Adapter

I have a problem with my display adapter (NVIDIA Vanta LT) It says it is not configured properly when I try to start my computer.
Then when I try to restart my computer I get an error message-
File Name: NVCORE(01) + 0000BC71 Error: OE : 0028 : C15520A1

I reinstalled all the drivers for it and still doesn't work.

Do you think I need to get a new display adapter?

Answer:Display Adapter

restart the machine, just after the memory count and before windows loading message start tapping the F8 key, from the startup menu choose safemode.
Once in windows Click the Start button and select Find, and then Files and Folders...
Make sure the Find applet is set to search your C:\ drive and do a search for "nv*.*" - without
the quotes
Look for any files found in the C:\Windows\System and C:\Windows\Inf and C:\Windows\Help
Select these files and delete them (do NOT empty them from the Recycle Bin until you know
your upgrade has been a success)
Exit the Find applet .

Now reinstall your video card drivers and reboot. I would suggest downloading updated drivers as your drivers could be corrupt. You can get the newest at

I just recently installed them again. I went to my device manager and under the display adapter tab there is an error when I click on the display adapter (Intel (R) 82945G Express Chipset Family) it says:This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. (Code 12)If you want to use this device, you will need to disable one of the other devices on this system.I think this is why my games are not working. I have reinstalled the driver, checked for updates, but it still doesnt work. Hopefuly someone can help me!THANKS

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

You will need to install the drivers for your graphics card.

If you do a google search for your model of graphics card you shouldn`t have any trouble finding them. Just make sure you download the correct drivers for your os.

Question: Display adapter

I just built a computer and when I boot up win ME I get an error - 'Display adapter is not configured properly....'. Then it
goes through the add Softwared Wizard, but finds none.
My Display settings are as follows:

Unknown Monitor on Unknown Device

and only lets me choose 16 colors

Is this because my video card is not good or
my monitor drivers are not installed or something

Answer:Display adapter

This is because the AGP slot (assuming you have an AGP video card) is not recognized by Windows. Try installing from the drivers of your video card: search in the drivers CD of it, the folder Win98 or WinME, and run the program Setup. In this way it should work. Good luck.

hey guys,
I checked device manager on my g50-80 device and I noticed there are 2 dipslay adapters
AMD Radeon R5 M330
intel(r) HD graphics 5500
now I wonder which one is working on my system?
Mod's Edit: System model added to front of Subject line to improve visibility / clarity.

Go to Solution.

Answer:G50-80 - display adapter?

 Hi NSR ,
By default the pc would complete POST (power on self test) on intel(r) HD graphics 5500 then boot into Windows.
It would work as an automatic switch similar to what is set on the BIOS configuration even on basic windows usage.
In any event that an application or any demand would require better display performance, AMD Radeon R5 M330 would take over the presentation as needed,
AMD can also be switched to any particular application manually.
Hope this answered your query.

well this all started along time ago when i got an invalid page error that wouldn't let me access much of anything on my computer. nothing worked. but i found a way to get on the internet through my version of rpg toolkit and i found out how to delete everything on my hard drive and start over. i did that. and installed windows 98. but now the color is stuck at 16 colors and the resolution is stuck at the lowest one. and i can't change the adapter from Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA). everytime i try to change it. i get a message saying to restart my computer which i do then when i comes back it says that the one i chose wont work and that i should set it back to the VGA one. but before i did the hard drive wipe and installing of windows the resoluion and color were fine and i could select true color and get the reolution up to the 1000 one. what should i do?

I am running Windows XP Home on a Dell Dimension 2400 series. Recently re-installed operating system through Dell. We had trouble configuring Internet and were barely able to do online assist. I contacted service provider and he helped to configure internet manually. It worked fine until recently. I can access some websites, but others fail. When I run network diagnostics it tries to automatically configure, but with no complete success. It does, however, improve some functions/configurations. Also, I am constantly uploading and removing software applications due to the fact that I will (rarely) pay for things that I believe I can get for free. Perhaps I have removed something vital. I am attaching latest diagnostics report.

Hi Everybody,
I hope this is posted in the correct forum (?) having just joined after getting a Powerbook G4 I need some help.
I have a 35mm film scanner which I used to use with XP via a SCSI card connection to the PC tower (that is the only output from the scanner). Obviously my Powerbook hasn't either the room or compatibilty to connect the scanner to it as designed and so as I no longer have a PC the film scanner is now effectively useless to me. That is until surfing away on ebay I saw some scsi to usb adapter cables. On the face of it these seem the answer to my problems but the ones I can find have the long flat SCSI type connections to them but my SCSI output is to a DB25 type cable and I can only find straight DB25 to USB cables online without any conversion electronics in them (as the other 50 pin ones do). So my 2 questions are:
1/. Would anybody know if there exists a SCSI DB25 to USB cable adapter??
2/. If they do exist do these things work??
I intend to use Vuescan software to talk to the scanner if it helps the answers given (if any!!).
Thanks in advance for any help/advice,

I just bought a new computer and had to go with Windows Vista 64 bit version as it has 8 gigs of RAM.

I tried to switch over my Linksys WMP54G Version 4.1 from my old computer but it is not 64 bit compatible.

I need a new Network adapter that will work on my system. I am currently set up using a Linksys Wireless Router model: WRT54GS.

I would like two options, if you may, for ...

1) A compatible Wireless Network Adapter w/ a compatible driver
2) A compatible Ethernet Card to connect via hardwire

Thanks for taking the time to help me!

Answer:Please HELP: Network Adapter needed, 64 bit Vista Compatible

Most current adapters will support Vista x64 computers
I am assuming that this is a desktop computer so the computer should already have ethernet capability. It's on the back on the computer as is the port that looks like a big phone jack...
For wireless though, I recommend....
Any new DLink or Linksys PCI or USB adapter should work with x64 Vista

In the Advanced tab of the properties window of my Linksys WPC54GS(v2) Wireless-G Notebook Adapter, these are the default settings:

Antenna Diversity - Auto

Bluetooth Collaboration - Disabled

BSS PLCP Header - Auto(Short/Long)

Fragmentation Threshold - 2346

IBSS 54g(tm) Mode - 54g-Auto

IBSS 54g(tm) Protection Mode - Auto

IBSS Channel Number - 11

Locally Administered MAC Address - None Present

Location - Default (I changed this one to "United States")

Power Output - 100%

Power Save Mode - Disabled

Radio Enable/Disable - Enabled

Rate - Use Best Rate

Roaming Decision - Default (There are choices for "Optimize Bandwidth" and "Optimize Distance", but I have left it on "Default")

RTS Threshold - 2347

SpeedBooster - Enabled

WME - Disabled

XPress (TM) Technology - Enabled

Should any of them be changed?

Is there a site somewhere that explains what these settings are and what recommended settings to use?

Answer:Wireless Adapter Default Settings - Any Changes Needed?

If you have difficulty connecting to a network that is not using the same SpeedBooster, you may have to disable that option.

If you want to save battery power during Standby, enable the Power Save Mode.

I think that it is unlikely that you will ever need to change any others. Does the User Guide explain any of them?
