Webcam Not Working. Alienware M17X, Intergrated Webcam.

Question: Webcam Not Working. Alienware M17X, Intergrated Webcam.

Recently my webcam has just stopped functioning. This laptop is brand new however and I just got it on the 14th.
I have no clue why it wont' work anymore. I checked under device manager and under Imaging devices its called "facap, FastAccess Video Capture".
I enabled it, for some reason it had become disabled, and it wouldn't work. And it seems no Driver updates are available. Also have tried reinstalling the driver but it didn't work. I then uninstalled the old driver and tried to install the driver and it failed. So I used Windows Restore Point feature thing. Now its just disabled.
Any ideas on how to fix it?

Preferred Solution: Webcam Not Working. Alienware M17X, Intergrated Webcam.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Webcam Not Working. Alienware M17X, Intergrated Webcam.

I found my solution! Though... it kinda is a "Doh!" kinda thing.
Apparently FN+F9 will enable or disable the webcam!
It seems that I had done this inadvertently at some point and turned it off, and while messing around for a solution the other day, II tried the combo it turned back on the webcam!
Quite a powerful key combination I have to say if manually enabling the web cam and reinstalling the web cam driver don't do anything.

I've owned this laptop for quite a while and had been using Webcam Central to control the Integrated Webcam on my Alienware M17x R4.   I never had any issues using Windows 7, 8, 8.1, or even Windows 10 until my system updated on 8/20/2016 with a scheduled Windows 10 update.
After the windows 10 update my system restarted and the next time I went to use my webcam I noticed that I couldn't control the pan / zoom / or tilt or alter any of the settings in webcam central.  If I attempt to change anything it automatically changes back instantly.  For example of I move the slider to zoom, or attempt to change the pan, it auto goes back to where it was and will not allow me to change the settings.
I also notice that my mouse pointer flickers over the webcam central GUI, meaning, there seems to be some issue with the GUI after the windows 10 update, I assume is also whats causing the settings not to be changed.
I have tried uninstalling both the drivers and software and reinstalling to no avail, same problem is present after reinstallation of both drivers and the webcam central software.
Wondering if anyone else has run into this and whether there was some type of resolution.
I was able to get the pan / zoom / tilt working with 3rd party webcam software, however I would prefer to go back to using webcam central.

I used to be on Vista but now on Windows7 and webcam doesn't work without going onto skype or other. No icon like there used to be.
I still have the cd for the software that came with laptop but it's for Vista.
Would this still work or would i have to download software for Windows7?
Or would it be better just to buy a plug and play

Answer:what to do about intergrated webcam

Make and model of laptop may help.
The webcam obviously works but you need to know how to launch it separately.

Hi,
So randomly when I open my laptop up and it's been in sleep mode the audio stops working.  Scrolling the mouse over the speaker icon says "No device driver installed" or something along those lines.  A simple restart of the laptop has always fixed it.  I have only owned the laptop since the end of September and bought it brand new, and it's been doing this randomly since day 1.  Tonight was different though, restarting the computer did not fix the issue.  Tried restarting 4 or 5 times but still did not work.  Also the problem never occurs unless the computer goes into sleep mode.  If the audio is working when I am using the computer it will remain working and does not just turn off while I am using the computer.
Things I tried tonight:
Re installed driver from Dell website, restarted - Didn't work
Ran the BIOS5 which I found as a possible solution in a different thread on this forum, restarted - Didn't work.
Looked in my audio device properties in the control panel while the problem was going on and it just said "No audio device installed".
So finally I shut the computer off for a while, and then it started working when I fired it up just now.  So as of right now it's working but I wonder for how long.  Any ideas on what else I can do or should I be looking into a warranty repair/replacement issue here?

Answer:Alienware M17x Sound stops working.

I don't know if it is hardware or software related. I would have thought the BIOS but  you tried that. Next time it happens check the Audio Service. Go to Start>Run and type "services.msc" (without quotes) then hit the 'Enter' key (or click 'ok'). The Services window will appear. Scroll down until you find "Windows Audio" towards the bottom of the list. Check that it is enabled, set to automatic, and running. If it isn't, double click on it and change the Startup type to Automatic, then click Start, Apply, and OK. If it stops in the future even when set to automatic then I would be suspicious of a problem with Windows itself.
That is all I can think of. Suggest that you post on the Alienware Club discussion board and be sure to tell them that you already have posted on the Laptop Audio board or else they might just send you back here. In the meantime you might get a better answer from someone else on this board.
en.community.dell.com/.../default.aspx
It will be helpful for them if you say the exact model name of your laptop if it is not  the original M17x, for example M17x R2, R3, or R4.

Hey, I have a Dell Inspiron 1546 with 64-bit Windows 7.

The problem with the Dell Intergrated problem seems to be a common one, I have tried many fixes and I have managed to get the software required to use it I am just missing the Webcam driver.

I do not understand as my computer appears to have the driver, and it could not find any updates for it.

I have used the Dell Driver and Utilities CD, but nothing seems to work.

Any help is appriciated.

Thanks.

The problem simply is, the webcam stopped working for some reason, an error messeage says "Webcam driver open fail. Please restart camera or computer".

I noticed that whenever I put the computer in sleep mode I was getting on the icon tray a notification says "USB device unrecognized"... I wasnt aware what it was - thought it becasue of the USB mouse being plugged... but I think its related to the camera...

software is installed but camera is not working and cant enable it .. I did download the latest driver from toshiba site , but still not working ...

Currently my laptop runs Vista HP SP2 32-bit, Windows defender enabled, Windows Firewall Enabled, Windows UAC enabled, Kaspersky Ani-Virus 2009 Enabled. I only use Windows Live Messenger (which up to date I think , version : 14.0.8089.726) which i used camera with, I quite using face recognition long time ago and rarely use the webcam ... I didnt install or update any drivers and used to have the laptop running perfectly..

So what happened now ?!

Answer:Satellite A300-1G5: webcam stopped working - Webcam driver open fail

Hi

I have had a similar error message and could solve this by disabling the webcam software from startup.
In msconfig -> Start Up tab I have unchecked the Chicony webcam software.
This prevents it from automatic loading.
I don?t use MSN but Skype and the Chicony webcam software is always disabled (not executed) if Skype is running.

Maybe you should try this too.

Furthermore you could try this:
Go to device manager, mark the webcam (imaging devices ? USB video device) and deleted it from the device list.
Then reboot the notebook and wait until the webcam has been recognized again.

Then test it.

After looking through this forum, I have tried several 'solutions' but to no avail.

After trying to load the webcam i get the message: "Webcam driver open fail. Please restart camera or computer"

I have tried updating the Driver software for the camera, and updated the BIOS.

This message still keeps coming up. Is it worth uninstalling the camera completely then attemtping to reinstall it?

Sorry if some of this doesnt make much sense, im not entirely "computer savvy"

I hope somebody can help,

Thanks,
Ben

Answer:Satellite A300-1MC: webcam not working - webcam driver open fail

> Is it worth uninstalling the camera completely then attemtping to reinstall it?
Of course!

You should firstly go to device manager and should uninstall the driver.
You should also remove the software from control panel -> Software

After that you should clean the OS and registry using CCleaner. It?s free tool? google?
Then reboot the notebook several times and install the webcam software again.

Cheers

I got a new laptop(Windows 7) a couple of months ago. Everything's been running smoothly. I use the XPS for everything. School, gaming(which is a major portion of the harddrive).

A couple of days before Christmas my webcam started messing up. My webcam went black on the MSN screen, but the light was still on.

I've tried common solutions, disabling the webcam, uninstalling and installing the driver and nothing works!

Any help would be so appreciated! Thank you!

My computer is fairly new...that's why this issue is driving me crazy! I use skype and messenger a lot because I'm currently stationed in Europe. When I first arrived everything worked great. Then, the voice went out on Skype so we started using Yahoo messenger..then the camera went out on messager...I went and bought both an external webcam and microphone and neither would work at the same time but every once in awhile one would work. Currently I can get voice on skype and that's it. Skype doesn't even give me the option of a webcam anymore and when i try with messenger it says no connection found. I'm not a computer smart person and I've tried and tried to get the camera working. I have no idea what to do about it now..I'm almost to the point of just buying another computer. I have been having issues getting the intergrated webcam on my ThinkPad T520 to work with any Flash Player based sites when I am using IE. It works fine from Firefox and Chrome but for some reason IE will not work. I am using IE11 so cannot roll back Flash Player to older version to test this. The webcam drivers are up to date. I tried uninstalling them and reinstalling with same issues. Webcam works with non Flash Player websites with no problem when using IE. When I plug in a USB webcam I can use that Webcam with no issues in IE on these Flash Player sites. I have ensured that I have the Shockwave player Plugin enabled and when I get the pop up from Flash Player  setting to allow it. Nothing I have tried has seemed to work. I have tried this on my Acer computer and it's intergrated webcam works fine with IE11 on these Flash player sites.I tried this from multiple ThinkPad T520's here at work with same results. I thought it might be our network but my personal computer worked without a problem on the same network. Please help.

Honestly I'd suggest just calling up Dell support (Look in the pouch of information Alienware bundles with their machines). Alienware costs for a reason, and one thing that at least they don't try to get out of is supporting their hardware.

If you don't want to do that, can you give us a little more information such as what application it isn't working in? Full wipes are last resorts.

Hi. I've already tried resolving my problem by contacting the official Dell and Alienware support but nobody seems to be able to help me. I recently purchased an Alienware M14X-R2 which came preinstalled with Windows 8. While everything else works fine, the system does not seem to be detecting the in-built webcam at all. Device Manager does not show me any Imaging Device. I have also checked the Dell website and no webcam driver appears to be available for Windows 8. The webcam driver installation tool for Windows 7 doesn't work either. Finally, I have tried updating the BIOS as well. This does not resolve my problem either. Can anyone help me fix this, please?

Question: Alienware M17X R2

So this is my laptop that I got for a good deal awhile back (about $600, good friend sold it to me) and I'm just looking at what my options are for internal upgrades such as the CPU, GPU, and what RAM I should shoot for. I believe it supports 16GB of RAM (which doesn't seem necessary) and either I read the laptop supports two hard drives or two GPUs or perhaps both, not quite sure. Anyways, if you could link me to some good parts (preferably THE best hardware I can attain with this computer) it would be much appreciated.

I have two problems, that I'm not really sure how to fix.  So I thought I might try asking for help here. The first, is that whenever I remove my AC adapter, the laptop locks up in it's entirety and regardless of time passing won't respond.  The second, is that when I wake my computer up from standby/hibernation and occasinally when I open my laptop after closing it, the screen will be black, with only the cursor visible.  To remedy this, if I'm waking up from standby/hibernation, I just have to move my cursor around until it turns into the "I" figure, and type my password.  If I'm opening my laptop, I just have to ctrl+alt+del and hit cancel (or do anything else, for that matter).  Any ideas on how to fix either of these problems?

Answer:Help with Alienware M17x R2

It's a longshot, but download and install the latest chipset drivers for your laptop.  Hopefully, that will resolve the hibernation/general power issues.Alternatively, you could try flashing the BIOS, but that seems pretty risky at this point (especially if your laptop freezes during the flash...you'll have an expensive brick...).  Another thing you might want to look at is whether or not the battery is on the verge of death.  Sometimes a dying battery can do more to a laptop than just turn the thing off if it has no AC power.  I've seen anywhere from BSODs to frozen splash screen boots (yes, I know, "What are you smoking, B?"...but seriously, it can happen).

Hey guys, I am getting ready to pull the plug on a new gaming notebook but cannot decide on which one is best for me or the best bang for the buck.
I am an avid CoD4 player and want a laptop that can play the game on high settings without any hic-ups.
Does anyone have an opinion on newer gaming laptops or maybe a suggestion that points my head in a different direction, maybe something cheaper that can provide me the performance that I am looking for?
Please let me know what you think.
-TIA-

*edit* just realized this could go under the laptop threads -_-

Answer:Alienware M17x Laptop or something else?

Okay... As far as I'm concerned Alienwares are just Dells with a higher price tag. However I may be wrong. I know that my friend had bought a quite expensive gaming laptop that will run everything smoothly(Even Crysis at the time of purchase[Not sure if that is used as a benchmark anymore]). He bought the laptop from Vigor Gaming. He said it costs about $3,000(a bit outrageous if you ask me) but it is a high quality computer and will last you quite a bit. What is your budget, and if I may ask, why a laptop? You can't really upgrade them as easily as a desktop. Incase you didn't catch the hyper-link then here is a direct link to the Vigor site. Vigor Gaming Computer - The Ultimate Gaming Computer for the Extreme PC Gamer

And here is a direct link to their Notebook section. Vigor Gaming Computer: The Gaming PC with Extreme Vigor™

And a little extra note: I have spent countless hours on his computer. The arm rest area/touch pad area gets hot occasionally when the computer is under full load, but the heat is bearable. The exact model he has is the Artorius Pro customized to his likings.

Edit: Keep in mind that I know next to nothing about laptops and how they should preform under certain conditions.

The last option for a processor is a 3.2ghz with 8MB cache. How much more performance am I going to get out of this? I am guessing that you probably won't get that much and its defiantly not worth the cost?

Whats the difference between the first two processors- one is faster, but offers lower MB cache and the other is slower but offers more MB cache. What is the point of this? So whats the point of Cache?

I was thinking about getting the third one with 3.06ghz and 8MB, but the 3.33ghz is faster, but offers only 4MB cache. So I guess this goes to the original question above what does Cache do?

In your point of view if you were an intense gamer and computer user which would you buy?

Hi guys...I have a fair amount of experience troubleshooting system crashes, and I like to think I'm not an idiot...but I just can't seem to pinpoint my issue.

A few months ago I started getting random BSOD. At first very rarely...then it increased to daily, then multiple times a day. I thought it was an old corrupted Win 7 installation that just needed to be reinstalled, so I got a new Samsung 850 Pro SSD and reinstalled a fresh copy of Win 7 Ultimate 64.

Everything works perfectly except I am STILL getting the BSOD. I noticed the black plastic backing piece inside one of the USB ports cracked off and one of the pins was bent over and touching the side metal housing inside. I rebent the pin back into shape and am not using that USB port now. (Still had a crash after that was "fixed."

I've run RAM tests and everything seems to check out.

Alienware(Dell)/Nvidia collude together to not allow driver signature verification for updates to recent drivers even though the drivers work great once you modify the INF files to sign off on the video card hardware IDs (2x GTX 280M running in SLI.) So I have the most recent drivers for this aging beast. BSOD before and after driver update. Meaning I got BSOD with the most up to date "verified" driver (2010...blah) and the newest 2015 update...so I don't think it's a video card driver issue.

In the System Health Report I notice it says it can't find an antivirus but I am running updated Avast.

Hello,

I'm new to this forum, and I'm hoping someone can help me out here.

I recently bought a secondhand Alienware M17x from a buddy of mine, and a month or so after purchasing it, I started having severe problems with it that force me to restart it several times a day. I constantly get error messages saying the graphics drivers failed, and sometimes the screen will just turn off completely, or start flickering between black, red and white. I've reinstalled the drivers several times, and have even reflashed the BIOS (from A05 to A07). Can anyone help me fix this? Thank you!

System Info:
Alienware M17x (Not sure if it's an R1 or R2)
Windows 7 Home 64-bit
Intel Core 2 Quad @ 2.00Ghz
2x Nvidia GeForce GTX 280M in SLI
1x Nividia GeForce 9400 (Not being utilized)
4 GB RAM

Does anyone know if Dell sells a replacement keyboard for an Alienware M17x R3? I am having a repair company looking into how much it will cost to replace the original hard drive since it crashed about 2 years after I had it after having many crashes with it before that. They keyboard keys pretty much popped off several months after I got it and then parts of the keyboard stopped working all together. I'm not sure if that was due to the hard driving failing or not.
I am just wondering if it's worth trying to salvage with a new hard drive but if I can't get the replacement keyboard there's no sense.
Thanks,

I have an Alienware m17x R3 that has a few issues, had some work done, and won't turn on.

History: I got the laptop through college back in December 2011, it worked flawlessly until 2015 when it suddenly died as the final cinematic of Dragon Age: Inquisition ended (pre DLC, but hey, at least I got to finish the main story) and would not turn on again. I was unable to perform any diagnostics (it wouldn't turn on, so, you know, couldn't even get into the BIOS) so I shelved it until I could afford to send it in somewhere. The only clue given was the blue LED ring on the power cord, it would light up when I plugged the cord into the wall, but would then turn off when I plugged the cord into the laptop. Online searches led me to believe the motherboard had died based on the power cord/LED issue. The battery had also died before this and was unable to hold a charge, I was thus unable to power on the laptop without it being plugged in at any rate. There was also that time a mug of black coffee was spilled on the laptop, no sugar or cream, but that is of small comfort. When the mug was spilled the laptop shut itself off instantly, I opened it up, let it dry and air (I picked it up, tipped it, and watched a mug of coffee pour out of the *** thing), waited 48 hours and turned it on, to my delight it worked, and continued to do so for another 8 months or so. There was a fear that the acidic nature of the coffee would corrode connections and stuff, but there were no pe... Read more

Hi there,
Long story short, back in 2013 my almost brand new M17x R4, working under Windows 7, died. And since it was under warranty I got a replacement but the new one came with Windows 8. I called the support and they sent me a DVD with Windows 7 x64 Pro.
I can't find this DVD and I can't find the windows 7 who came with it since the laptop was built with windows 8 key hardcoded on the motherboard, if that is even a thing.
I would update to windows but I need to keep windows 7 for the job. And I need to re install the OS asap.
Is there a way to have the windows 7 CD key ?

Thanks,

Xavier

Hey guys

just got my mate to upgrade me to win 7 64bit.
Now my camera wont work. I had to re-install the drivers (they only had the vista drivers) - Can anyone help?

Cheers

Answer:Portege M800: webcam does not work Win 7 64bit - webcam driver open fail

Hi

Seems you have used wrong or not compatible webcam driver/software?
You should use an Win 7 64bit Chicony webcam software.

> Now my camera wont work. I had to re-install the drivers (they only had the vista drivers) - Can anyone help?
The Portege M800 Win 7 drivers are available on the Toshiba European driver page.
You will find also the Win 7 64bit Webcam driver 1.7.260.0526

Please remove firstly the old driver, then reboot the unit? clean the OS using CCLeaner? reboot the unit again and then install the Chicony webcam software.

I have a Satellite M305d-s4830.
My PC's operating system is Vista 64bit.

Cam and mic were working fine until one day the camera assistant software started showing a messagebox saying that: "Webcam driver open fail. Please restart the camera or computer."

Since then I tried everything that comes to my mind, but I think neither the cam nor the mic appear in the device manager. I also have the recovery disk for Toshiba.

What am I supposed to do?

Thanks in advance

Answer:Satellite M305D-S4830 - Webcam driver open fail - Now webcam & mic does not work

Hi

> Since then I tried everything that comes to my mind, but I think neither the cam nor the mic appear in the device manager
Hmm? you mean the cam is not listed in device manager?
Neither an unknown device nor near a yellow exclamation mark?

Sounds like hardware issue? but try to recover the notebook using recovery disk.
If this will not help then it means that there must be something wrong with the cam?

I read in the net that some people had a similar issue.
The webcam worked when opened the laptop lid only halfway.
But webcam disappeared when the lid has been moved up.
Possibly there was an loose contact between the cable and cam?
In such case the ASP technician should check the notebook?.

Have you installed service pack 1 for Vista and latest windows updates?

If not, please update. One thing you could try is to completely remove the drivers, using some registry cleaning tools like ccleaner and reinstall camera drivers.

There's a problem with my G580 involving the webcam indicator and the webcam in general. I had installed a bigger harddrive and reinstalled Windows 8. Whenever the computer goes into sleep and wakes up (from being idle) the webcam indicator light will stay on forever until I reboot. Letting it sleep and waking it up will recreate this issue. I tried it out on a store model and it did the same thing.  Is there not a fix for this? Also, when uninstalling Lenovo EasyCamera, it reinstalls on boot up. Is there anyway to disable the webcam completely and kill the drivers? Thank you. Fresh windows 8 install. Lenovo drivers that are installed consist of the Audio, Graphic and battery drivers.

Answer:G580 problems with webcam indicator / webcam drivers in general

Hi z888,

Thanks for posting and welcome to the Lenovo Community,

I?d like to confirm to you that having the indicator on is normal and not a problem,

But if you?d like to disable the Camera kindly be sure that you?ve installed Lenovo Power management for windows 8 and check the below link for the software if you don?t have it:

http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS032506

And then please press on Fn and ESC buttons together at the same time to disable the Camera,

Another way to disable the camera drivers as you can open Device manager windows and underneath Imaging Device and you disable it or uninstall it.

Hope the information helps. Let us know.

Regards

Hiya,

firstly I am not sure if this is a warranty issue, but I always seem to be geting in post the closure of the offices at the moment.

The new laptop seems to occasionally play up and suggest the USB device not recognised.
On top of this the webcamera is not listed in the hardware settings.

I have tried re-installing the webcam drivers, but although they install ok the computer cannot actually find the webcam, i.e. its not listed in system devices, and forcing Vista to look for the camera does not result in any luck. (the microphone adjacent to the webcam works fine).
Every time I start the computer it now tells me I need to restart the webcam or the computer.

I am running Vista 32 bit, the 250D being a 1.9Athlon core duo with 2GB ram and definetly comes packaged with a webcam (I do seem to recall the little blue light coming on early during setup but never again since).

Is it worth doing a hard re-install, although Windows is normally pretty good at picking up new hardware surely??
I have had a look at the other webcam issues but the drivers are no good as I cannot actually make the webcam do anything.
I have been onto the Warranty page but trying to enter the Serial no. it says it doesn't exist.

Any ideas?

Thanks, Jason

Hi,

I need some help regarding the integrated webcam of my Satellite A200.

Everytime I start the laptop I keep receiving a message saying that the webcam drives has failed and I have to restart the computer, but the problem persists.

I have downloaded an updated webcam driver, but nothing.

Can anyone give me an idea of what is going on?

Thanks!

Answer:Satellite A200 - WebCam issue - webcam drives has failed

Hi

Are you using the Toshiba preinstalled OS? Is it Vista or Win XP?
As far as I know Vista needs Sp1 and other MS updates in order to handle the 3rd party software and drivers correctly.

I?ve got internal webcam and I?m using in with Vista and Win XP.
I have removed the webcam software from startup in msconfig.
This prevents the webcam from automatic startup while windows booting?
You should do this too?

I downloaded Pinnacle Studio 12 to my new Alienware Laptop, and there is a major problem.

When I try to record in high quality, tons of frames drop, i'm talkin' around 100 frames every 10 seconds. Now this is ridiculous since my 2002 laptop with crappy specs could run Pinnacle Studio 12 like that with little to no problem at all.

I can record in Low Quality, but who wants low quality right?

Does anyone know what could be the problem, I mean I lost 7000 frames in 3 minutes!

Hey guys,

I've come here in the past and had great advice when it came to buying my gaming PC, I'm wondering if any of you kind folk can offer some on my current potential purchase.

I'm on the verge of buying an Alienware M17x.

http://www.dell.com/uk/p/alienware-laptops

And as I bow to your greater knowledge on these subjects, I was wondering if anyone can either persuade or warn me on this...? perhaps there are cheaper alternatives?

Thank you!

Answer:On the verge of buying an Alienware M17x...

There is no perhaps about that, there are cheaper alternatives. Are you buying this to use it as your primary gaming system, or as a portable alternative to an existing gaming desktop? Laptops can't be upgraded to nearly the same extent as desktops, and one of the trade-offs of all that portability is that you lose out in power.

So whether this is a good purchase for you or not depends a lot on what you want out of it, and what you expect from it now, and a year or two from now.

I have been battling BSOD Power_State_Failures on my alienware m17x r3 for almost a year now and they have been occuring since day 2 out of the box with seemingly no pattern of frequency. Sometimes my system goes weeks without crashing and sometimes it'll crash 5 times within 3 minutes of startup on the same day doing easy tasks like watching netflix or editing a word doc without any change in location or physical setup.

There does seem to be a pattern of crashing while playing League of Legends, but i read somewhere that the intel speedstep feature was causing BSODs and upon disabling it I rarely encounter power state failures while playing that specific game. However, my system still blue screens while doing things like watching netflix, browsing the internet, doing homework, etc.

I've called into Dell support several times, but they just have me run diagnostic tests and tell me to call back and wait on hold if it blue screens again... which it always does. I appreciate any help i can get and would love to get this finally figured out

I'm running an i7 2720qm processor with an nvidia gtx 460m graphics card, on windows 7 64bit with 8gb of ram

I have a 2-months-old Alienware M17x. I never shown any signs of problems, until...

Suddenly, after about 5 minutes after I had turned it on, it simply blacked out. It was running on the battery at the moment. I tried to turn it on again but nothing happens.

Then, I tried to plug it in the power adapter and a curious thing happened. The LED on the adapter goes off as soon as I plug the machine to it. Of course, it does not turns on. I removed the battery and the same behavior happens.

The battery lights show that it is fully charged. And there's not the slightest smell of burnt circuits (not that it means anything).

I'm trying to contact Alienware support, but the support by email was deactivated. There are some US and Europe toll-free numbers, but I'm in Brazil and I can't call them. I'm still trying to contact them, but, in the meanwhile, can anybody explain to me what might have happened?

EDIT 1: I posted the very same question on techsupport.com. Alas, nobody answered yet.

Hi,
I have had an M17xR4 since 2013 and it's beautiful. I have been having an issue lately where while playing games the video turns off. There is no video or sound, the FN keys still work but the cd wont eject. The laptop doesn't turn off. But I have to hold down the power key to actually turn it off and back on again. I have run multiple tests and it doesn't show much wrong with it. I upgraded to windows 10 and things didn't work. I reformatted my laptop back to windows 7.

mazedrvr It sounded like the speaker is somehow damage or crack.
Hello. Plug in headphones and listen to them. If you do not hear the crackling through the headphones, but do hear it through the speakers, then probably the speakers need to be replaced. In that case, contact tech support to have the laptop repaired, if it is still under warranty.
If you hear the crackling through the headphones and through the speakers, then the speakers are probably okay.

Firstly, thanks for any help. I'm a noob at this.

When I installed Windows 8 (Pro x64), suddenly my games ran really slowly. I tried going onto the NVidia Control Panel, yet it said something about no compatible software. I downloaded and ran the latest drivers for my 660M card, but it said it couldn't install until an Intel driver was installed - I googled this, and followed a post saying uninstall the NVidia drivers and the Intel drivers and re install - I uninstalled and downloaded the drivers, but they will now not install: the NVidia drivers saying I need to install an Intel driver, and the Intel drivers saying my computer does not reach the minimum requirements - yet I know it does, since it came pre installed with that driver!

My specs are: 16GB RAM, 1080p display (no 3D), Intel HD 4000 integrated graphics with a 2GB GDDR5 NVidia 660M discreet graphics, a 750GB 7200RPM HDD, a 500GB 5400RPM HDD and a 2.3GHz i7-3610QM processor. Thank you for any help, David.

Answer:Think I've screwed up Alienware M17x R3 graphics

Looks similar to my Ivy Bridge laptop. I'll try to help.

The next listed steps all worked on my system.

Intel HD 4000: I've installed it from here:
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Sear...cs%204000/2500

I took the zip (second in line) and went to Device Manager myself because I don't always trust driver installers.

What I recommend is you also update the SATA, USB and system PCI devices (all intel) from the zip chipset utility:
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Deta...22153&lang=eng
Seems that even brand new laptops are a few months (or years, depending on devices!) outdated on drivers, mainly on the system section.

This is what I mean (just an example from older pc):

All those lines with Intel and PCI... can be updated from the Intel chipset utility.

You probably also have something called SATA RAID under storage:

The first one is from Intel and has newer drivers (included in the same chipset package).
Don't forget USB.

This has to be done manually from Device Manager but improves stability and performance.
One of the system devices gave me a BSOD and had to update it from Safe Mode, but it worked!
It's something called 3rd generation ...processor and after update => Xeon or 3rd gen..., seems important for the motherboard.

Then add the latest nVidia:
NVIDIA DRIVERS 306.97WHQL

without issues and now not only graphics but ALL drivers are up to date.

That's all I did, and since we have similar systems (here i7-3630QM , NV 660M, intel 4000 gfx) all should be alri... Read more

am currently looking into buying a new laptop. My whole goal in buying this laptop is to be able to run Starcraft II on Ultra settings. Now, I really want the Alienware, I have wanted an Alienware forever and I just don't feel there is any better looking laptop out there. The Alienware is obviously not as good where the processor is concerned, but I am not sure in the graphics card(s) area. I am okay with taking a small hit on performance if it means the Alienware.

Alienware M17x Specifications:

Intel Core 2 Q9000 Quad Core Processor
8GB DDR3 RAM
Dual 1GB (2GB total) NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M in SLI Configuration

Dell XPS Specifications:

Intel i7-840 Quad Core Processor
NVIDIA GeForce GT 445M (3GB Total, dual 1.5GB cards I believe, NOT in SLI configuration)
8GB DDR3 RAM

Both have plenty of hard drive space, both have the same quality screen (1440x900 900p), both have 1333MHz RAM, both have Windows 7 Premium, everything but the processor and the graphics cards are the same.

Now again, I know that the XPS is better processor wise, but I don't know where the GPU is concerned. I would much rather own the Alienware.

I guess my real question is, Will there be any significant difference between the two or only a slightly noticable one? If it is the latter, I will be buying the Alienware despite the small hit in performance, and will they both be able to run Starcraft II on Ultra?

The two laptops are NEARLY IDENTICAL IN PRICE.

Thanks!

This post is more to see if other people have has similar issues with Dell.
Since 2007 I have been a customer with Dell after buying a laptop on eBay and I have to say when Dell products work they tend to work well but when they fail Dell service and warranty seem to fail even more.
So after three replacement laptops (Alienware laptops) I have found myself once again having issues with the laptop and Dell.
It was January when contact was initiated by myself regarding issues with a wifi card that has been replaced and working successfully. Shortly after that I notices overheating issues on the laptop and again another service engineer was sent out to replace the fans, heat sink and motherboard three times. Unfortunately after repair I notices the screen started flickering and reduced brightness even with the brightness level set to max.
This is where Dell advised another service call was issued, only a few days later they decided no to honor their word or warranty and decide to only offer me the service of sending away the computer to their service depot for testing.
I advised Dell Executive Advanced Resolution Group that I used this service before with a previous laptop and it failed to rectify the issue. They stood firm on this and now I have had my solicitor contact Dell on my behalf. I have retained all the emails from Dell and also have a recorded call with the employee saying they wont honor the next business day warranty even if its paid for!
I was advised that re... Read more

The computer stopped working for the first time in May, no response except a LED on the start switch for 5 seconds.
I contacted Technical Support on 25-05-2015. Email has been used for contact since so I have a full record of this case number.
The Dell engineer has made 5 visits so far, over 9 hours on site. I have had three new motherboards, new batteries, cables and a small USB board. I still have the same issue of the machine failing to restart. I have not had a reliable working computer for over seven weeks. The engineer told me that there is a design issue with this machines motherboard and I am told that I have to wait for an updated motherboard. No available date for the repair can be given!
I am extremely disappointed with this computers reliability and the customer service I have received.
I have asked for a replacement computer or a refund, however this has been declined. Why have I not had the computer replaced with an updated working machine?
I am told I have to wait for the motherboard revision with no available time scale for the repair. I feel that I will then become a Dell test site!!
I will never buy another product from this company.

Hi guys,

Im having a little trouble with recovering my alienware laptop. Here are the details:

I bought it with windows 7 on it and when the free upgrade came out for windows i thought i would give it a try knowing that this model wasnt tested for it. While i like that OS, everytime i get a windows 10 update it upsets either my USB connectivity or my sound drivers. Only way i can get around it is keep reinstalling windows 8.1 drivers.

This has gotten extremely annoying. So i then backed everything up and proceeded to do a factory recovery. However it seems like that windows 10 has taken over and even though i went through all the correct motions, the recovery screen was windows 10 and the laptop was recovered to a bog standard windows 10 install with ALL device drivers installed and working correctly minus the preloaded alienware software like alien command and respawn.

Now from what i have gathered, windows 10 removes all your old windows files from the computer after a month (which it has been), however i did do a complete fresh install (though i left the recovery partition intact incase i didnt like it).

I am by no mean a novice with computers but i have spent the last couple of years in a field that has nothing to do with computers so my knowledge isnt as recent. Im not too sure if this is best in this sub forum or the windows 10, so apologies up front.

Look forward to some fresh knowledge and learning :)

thanks guys,

Steel

Hey!
I've just purchased an Alienware M17X R3, and I'm having bluescreen issues under the error DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE through file ntoskrnl.exe. To add to my frustration I've just purchased this laptop for almost 2,000 dollars and when examining my dump files, I can see that the first dump from this error happened several days before they shipped it to me

When it first happened I naturally assumed there was a problem with my drivers or my bios, so I updated both with the latest updates available from the Dell support site.

Still having errors and they are becoming more frequent. Have tried to contact dell but they give you the runaround like nothing else and are starting to aggrivate me.

I have some technical knowledge but obviously not nearly enough to understand what my problem is here.
System Specs:
BIOS: InsydeH20 Version 1.0 A04
Processor: Intel Core i7-2630QM
6GB ram, running DX11
OS: Windows 7 home premium 64 bit (6.1, build 7600)
Video Card: nVidia GeForce 460M

I'm unable to attach my most recent dump file, they are all almost identical, I'm going to try to post it as the next post.

PLEASE HELP ME

That's why we always recommend against getting Alienware (and Dell to a lesser extent). They're low-quality, overpriced and their support is horrendous.

Hi there! I have this really weird bug, I dont know exactly what is the problem. I'm out of warranty and I seriously want to spend the less money I could on this: this is my 3rd dell laptop since 2009 and they all had some hardware problem (first one was inspiron 1720 bought in 2009; still running good and it's the reason why I bought two more... I had to change the screen within 2 years, but other than this, it's running good; got a XPS L701x and mobo died within 1 year and a half; then, I decided to buy an alienware, expecting to keep it for like 5 years like my inspiron... but got some weird hardware problem within 3 years...). Anyhow... ranting over... :P
So here is the details for my problem:
I have an Alienware m17x r4.Dedicated Graphic card is NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660M. Integrated graphic card is an Intel HD Graphic 4000.
The screen is all fuzzy, with tiny blurried line. This happen not only in windows, but also when booting the computer (I see those line as soon as I power on the computer)Like this:http://i.imgur.com/srV3IH6.jpg
Here is a closeup:http://i.imgur.com/iGlYsl1.jpg
I though my screen was the problem... but if I do plug a HDMI cable from the HDMI out to the HDMI in and press Fn-F8 (HDMI In), I have a perfectly working screen.http://i.imgur.com/50Dqlpf.jpg
Obviously, I dont have any problem using an external monitor.
Some strange behavior: - While using HDMI, my resolution is 1920x1080 (but I can't go higher than 1600x900 if I dont use HDMI in/... Read more

Answer:Display problem on Alienware M17x r4

Some further troubleshooting:I did install a unlocked bios. I tried to change some option, trying to boot using either discrete card or dedicated card. Nothing work.
Anyone having any idea what it could be?
Could it be a screen connection which is "bypassed" when connected via HDMI? Not sure if this makes any sense... but that's the only theory that make sense to me at the moment. :|
Cause clearly, the screen CAN work (it does when using HDMI). Dedicated video card is working correctly via HDMI. Removing discrete videocard doesnt change anything (neither trying to run solely on dedicated videocard)... So as using one or the other videocard doesnt solve the problem, I dont think it has anything to do with this.

I was wondering if anyone knew anything on the issue I am having. It is an alienware m17x r2 with 8gb ram, intel i5 520m processor 2.4ghz, nvidia geforce 260m, and a 512 gb ssd with windows 10. It will not boot into windows and gives me BSOD screens memory related such as kernal security error and page fault in nonpaged area. When I run diagnostics it shuts down and reboots during memory tests. Both memory sticks are brand new off the shelf at best buy. I do not know exactly what is going on. I have also tried 3 processors in it. I have a 920xm i7 extreme that will not POST. Now the two i5 520m processors I have tried do relatively the same thing which is problem stated above. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,

I purchased an Alienware m17x this past June and have loved every minute of using it! Recently, however, I have been experiencing quite the frequent amount of BSODs... Just about every other day. My computer has not slowed down at all and I have run several virus scans to ensure that it is clean. Is this typical of Alienware computers? What is this an indicator of? How do I go about fixing this problem?

Thank you in advance for your help.

P.S. I don't know how to upload zip files with information from BlueScreenView... but here are the BCCodes:

Hey! Website was recommended by a friend, so I'm sorry if there's some protocol I must follow that I didn't; I'm new.

I own an Alienware M17x laptop. Bought it off a pawnshop about 8 months ago. That's all I know about my laptop's internals(sorry).
I've had a couple of problems with this thing, and I was hoping this website's wonderful community could help me out.

1.) This Alienware laptop comes with a small physical "control panel" for volume control, mute, skipping or rewinding/pausing video, ejecting discs, toggling wireless signals, and most importantly, accessing the Alienware Control Panel  shortcut, which opens the Alienware Control panel. These buttons are located on the top right of the keyboard, above the number pad(look at pictures on the internet if still confused). This is where the first problem persists. About two weeks after I got this computer, the Alienware Control Panel shortcut button stopped working. I could still go to the FxEditor, but only by clicking on the icon. I know I didn't break the button, so what could've happened? After it broke, I also couldn't change the backlights on the keyboard without first disabling them entirely. I used to be able to switch them without having to disable the lights, but around the time the button on the computer stopped opening up the program, I had to start shutting off the lights to switch the colors.

2.) After I switched to Windows 10, the speakers stopp... Read more

The underlying problem to all of these issues is very likely a dying hard drive.  To run a drive diagnostic, press F12 at powerup and boot to the Dell diagnostics.  Run the quick tests, and then boot to the full diagnostic at the end and run an extended hard drive scan.
Any errors -- replace the hard drive.

I was mortified when I recieved this message on a laptop that was barely used but was now over one year old. Troubleshooting steps on Lenovo's site ended up referring to repair shop.   I watched a few video's on how to service the LED LCD display and looked over the service manual to find a solution.  Disclaimer Note: I take zero responsibility if you do this and fail or damage something. My unit was out of warranty and I have a lot of experience inside these things. So what works for me, may not work for you. 1. Completely shutdown the computer.  The machine must be totally shutdown and not in a sleep mode.2. Unplug AC/DC power adapter3. Removing the bezel around the LCD display was easy.    -be very gentle prying this off with your finger tips from the inside lip and don't put any pressure on the LCD screen. Any pressure on the LCD screen especially the bottom edge can cause damage.    -start at the top center of the bezel and work down each side and do the corners and bottom last.4. Re-seating the tiny cable connected to the webcam was not so easy; but, I did it with a plastic prybar, bright light, and magnifying glass.    -if not carefull here you could easily do some damage.5. Loosen up the slack on the cable by re-routing it a bit.6. Carefully snap the bezel back on. (It turned out that the cable does not stay connected because of to much tension on the cable. Basically the cable is a bit to... Read more

Hi

When chatting in skype my webcam turn on and off all the time (the indicator light turns off and on in unison with the video). Also the quality is poor. There is a lot of lag when watching myself (and also on the computer receiving the video). Seems like it's a 1 fps or something. I've checked and the driver is up to date, and I've reinstalled the virtual webcam thingy.

My first post to a forum, so here goes. Got 3 BSODs within my first week. Very discouraging after having dropped so much $$ on this machine. Updated to latest BIOS version (A07) which appears to have addressed issues with disconnecting of power cords. Also reset my BIOS to RAID setup when it couldn't find my OS during bootup. This last BSOD came while i was transferring a 30MB file on a homegroup i created between two PCs.

As a side note, while on line with Alienware support I asked for any additional items to do to give my machine proper care and feeding to keep additional BSODs from occuring. As a result, i downloaded the latest ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870 driver (8.692.2.0) and installed that.

To begin with, my laptop will shut down after I unplug it from a power source after 2-10minutes. It will still have sufficient power and it will do a complete shut off(Not a proper shutting off- but instant) I have gone through the power options and nothing there should be causing this. I have also tried updating the drivers. I sadly do not have another battery to test if my battery is the problem.

Secondly, while playing games, I believe my laptop is selecting the wrong graphics processor to run off of. It seems to be based off of whether or not the laptop is running off battery or plugged-in, but it also just seems random sometimes. Sometimes I will be getting 5fps on a game, and after unplugging my laptop from the power source it will jump to 60fps. Sometimes it will do the reverse. In both the intel and nvidia control panel, I have selected it to use "high-performance Nvidia processor" for whatever game it is I want to play, but that seems to make no difference. I've also checked the power options.

Another problem I'm having is about 50% of the time I start up my laptop, the sound will be an awful mess of crackling. Restarting my sound cards and whatever else I've tried doesn't seem to do anything, except restarting my laptop.

Lastly, my internet will drop out every 15-30seconds for a couple seconds. This is a problem only my laptop is having; no other device in my house experiences any problems. It also doesn't matter if I'm usi... Read more

Answer:Having countless problems with a two year old Alienware m17x R3 Laptop

Hmm, thats quite a list. I'd try to eliminate software as a culprit first. If you've had the same OS install for the past two years it might be time to try a fresh install. That might fix the audio and GPU issues.

The GPU issues could be results of overheating and the battery sounds like its not doing all too well either. The power issues could be on onboard circuit issue as well. Have you tried googling the model of the laptop and any of the issues? I'll see what I can find as well.

In a forum someone mentioned a bios hardware diagnostics? Have you seen anything like that? Try hitting F12 at startup.

Hello,
Just bought the Bose Quietcomfort 25 headphones.
Among other things I want to use them for my Alienware M17x R2 laptop.
When I plug them in, the sound is low and cracking up/distorted, especially with explosion-sounds, crowds cheering loudly etc.
I've tried changing most sound settings and reinstalling/updating drivers, but to no effect.
I've also tried using a "splitter" (4 pin-to-3 pin) on the minijack, to separate headphones and microphone, but it doesn't help either.
My old headphones have no issues.

Any suggestions?

Answer:Alienware M17x-R2 BSODs continue - even after BIOS A07 update

One is 0xA error citing Intel Matrix Storage driver related file (iastor.sys), and second cited 0x124 i.e. hardware issue.

As the thing is in warranty I would suggest to take it back and ask them to fix it for you. In the interim, you uninstall Intel drivers from your OS, and see whether that stabilize the system.

the parts i put in are, x9000 2.8ghz CPU, 2x 2g ram, 2x 250g HDs, 2x 512mb NVIDIA Geforce GO 8800M GTX with an SLI ribbon, FX keyboard.

Heres the problem, when i power it up the keyboard lights up the fans all work including the CPU fan, but the screen is black. all the parts are new and used to be a bare bones system. ive tried an external monitor and it didnt work, i tried swapping the ram and still nothing. i also tried taking out the graphics cards, it has an internal graphics card, still nothing. it has all new parts in it and the motherboard and everything is new. ive taken it apart and reassembled it to make sure everything was connected properly and nothing still.

you guys have any ideas?

Hi, I have a Alienware M17X R3 with a Nvidia 580M. I have a problem with the performance. When I play a game the FPS drop suddenly from 35-40 to 3-5. Just for a few seconds. My problem now is whenever I download the latest Nvidia Drivers the laptops graphics become glitchy and especially wherever there is blue color the screen is flickering there.
Any idea what's wrong or how can I fix this?
ps. Laptop has latest BiOS, latest vBios for Nvidia and all Windows Updates Installed. Runs Windows 7 X64 Ultimate.

Hello All

Alienware M17X R4  died suddenly after “passing all diagnostics”

My  M17X R4  does not turn on either with or without A/C adaptor
But attempts to boot with the battery alone. But shuts down after the keyboard light flickers twice

ACTION:

Disconnect all the external peripherals from the computer including the battery and the ac adapter and release the flea power by pressing and holding the power button for about 30 seconds.
Tried  to turn it on with with the cable plugged in without the battery,  which didn't work
Re-install the battery with the cable unplugged
Turn on the computer and check. Nothing happened except the keyboard light flickered twice without response
Just before the 2nd flicker, you would hear a “click or flicker” as if something is trying to kick in which could not.
What I am saying here is that something is failing before it even gets to POST.
What is it?
It is a shame that a gaming lap top as solid and expensive  as M17X R4  should disappoint and fail just like this.
Experts should tell me what going on.
Could the GPU thermal tape or CPU thermal paste help??

Thx
Matt

Hi all,So, as the username hopefully indicates - a newbie to the x200s, which I bought recently, though I've been using thinkpad products for a few years now (a devoted fan!)My x200s did not come with a webcam and, since I am thousands of miles from home, I reckoned I would try and install one manually. Note that I have swaped its HDD for an SD & changed keyboard in the past with no problem, so I was assuming (foolishly, perhaps!) that vaguely knew what I was doing.I followed the instructions and user experiences on this thread, I purchased this camera - and got off to work.Even though everything seemed fine when adding the camera to the system, a strange thing happened after I rebooted (I run Linux Mint 16): neither the webcam, nor the thinklight were now working. After lots of testing, I assumed I must have just destroyed part of the cable during installation, and so I purchased this cable (Lenovo ThinkPad X200 LCD Video Cable 44C9909) and tried again. Same result! The only difference is that the first time round, an "lsusb" command on linux would return a Ricoh product (and I assume that's the webcam), but it would still not be recognised by Mint, while now, there's nothing. In both cases, the Thinklight didn't work.Since both the thinklight and the webcam come out at the same end (see the right end of the cable on this picture) I am assuming, of course, that the two are related.Would anyone know which of the clips on the left end of the cable on the same picture, abov... Answer:X200s tried to add webcam - now neither webcam, nor thinklight will work

Hi,

perhaps HMM and Service Video might help.
Be sure integrated camera is enabled in the BIOS Setup menu.

I hope this is the correct place to ask this question. I haven't wanted to ask because I was worried about where. Please move this if it's wrong.
I also need to repair drivers on my computer. the MMDRIVER.INF file is missing or damaged. It says use the windows disc 1 to system32 directory.
The problem I'm having is that suddenly my webcam doesn't work. My daughter gave me the computer, but never bothered to give me the CDs for it. Is there anything I can do to repair this without them?
Thank you,
Sudsy

Hi,

I have recently tried to upgrade my old graphics card in my Alienware M17x R2. However I cannot figure out the driver errors I am getting.

Currently the card shows as "Video Controller (VGA Compatible)" and it has the following hardware ID's. GPU-Z shows this:

PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0DE9&SUBSYS_043A1028&REV_A1
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0DE9&SUBSYS_043A1028
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0DE9&CC_030000
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0DE9&CC_0300

I have tried modifying the "nvdmi.inf" such that these ID's are included however I have no success with the current driver 375.95 from the NVIDIA website.

I would love some insight into anything I am missing or other things I should consider.
Currently running the latest bios release from the manufacturer.

Cheers for any help.
