Preferred Solution: How do I turn on photo file thumbnails???

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have checked the file associations? and they are all jpeg so therefore I cannot understand why they will not open. Could you please help? Best regards jonni65.

Hi there chaps.

I have this problem with File Explorer. I have checked the box "Always show icons, never thumbnails"

But not all of the thumbnails are showing. I get a mixture of the "mountain" icon as well as some thumbnails.

I have tried to delete the thumbnail cache and nothing seems to work. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I could do? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Matt.

Answer:Not all photo thumbnails showing.

Having always show Icons not Thumbnails is your problem. Default is that box is left unchecked.

Hi all
All my photo thumbnails have suddenly disappeared and been replaced by icons - I have ensured that the folder options 'Always show icons never thumbnails' is unchecked and also looked in the Control Panel display settings which appear ok
Occasionally when changing the icon size the thumbnails appear frustratingly briefly but then change to an icon!
Any ideas?

I have a strange issue that is hindering my work since I am a web developer that works from home and this is occurring on my production machine. The issue just started tonight after I downloaded some pictures from an email a client sent to me. Every time a picture is placed on the desktop explorer crashes in 5-10 second intervals. It doesn't matter what image it is. The same thing occurs inside of safe mode. I had to open up task manager launch command prompt and delete the picture I placed on my desktop in the command line in order to make the computer usable again. It now also crashes when I try to back up my files , of course I probably could do this via command line, but I was hoping for a easy fix.

Here is the log from the event viewer. It seems to be the same for every crash

Hi:
I have Windows XP Pro. About a week ago I received 2 Microsoft automatic updates. It was about Net frame SP1 and I also installed Internet Explorer 8. Yesterday I went to my Photos folder and all the Jpeg image files with the picture preview thumbnails used to identify the photos have all been replaced with the jpeg file type magnifying glass icon. Others have the Bitmap image type icon. I can no longer identify my photos with the thumbnails. Furthermore, when I open any of the current magnifying glass thumbnail, the photo appears in Internet Explorer. I don't like that. Before this, it used to open in Windows (I think). I opened another magnifying glass thumbnail and it looked like a bar code all scribbly. How do I get my Jpeg and Bitmap images back to the preview thumbnails like it used to be before I installed the updates? Or maybe it was something else that changed the settings? I tried to do a System Restore only to be disappointed by System Restore having been turned off with no restore date to choose.

Hi. All thumbnails for pics on windows folders have recently disappeared. I have double checked all folder and performance settings and tried repairing Windows photo gallery, deleting thumbnails cache, restoring pc to previous state, changing file associations etc etc. No joy.

When I open the pictures folder, thumbnails appear briefly and then quickly revert to icons. "Always show icons, never thumbnails" is definitely unchecked.

I have successfully installed another picture browser which works fine when I work through it directly, unfortunately I still need thumbnails on the standard windows folders for selecting & uploading pics online, which is an important part of my business.

Anyone any suggestions? I have already tried all the suggestions for similar problems I have found on the forums but nothing so far has made any difference.

I have encountered this problem just a few days ago and cannot find a single solution anywhere online...

On BOTH my PC hard drive (windows vista) and my external hard drive in which i use to store extra photos...the photo thumbnails will load and then within a few seconds, will disappear and the icons will be the default photo icon (blue landscape, or whatever it is)...

Why on earth does this happen? I cleared up some extra room on my PC hard drive, which solved the problem for about 12 hours, then it started happening again...i also plugged in my external today to store some more pics, and noticed that it is happening on there too!!

My copy of X2 works perfectly well except that, when using Print Layout to set up a page for printing, the thumbnails of photos I import show only as black-filled rectangles. Since this appears to be the only problem, I am loath to spend money on a replacement programme. Does anyone know a way around it, please?

I keep several programs active most of the time. This is indicated by a bar under the icon. Mousing the icon of the currently open program window shows a thumbnail view of the current window(s), which stays visible until moving away. However, mousing the other icons shows a very brief thumbnail -- not enough to tell what's happening. When no windows are active all active icons show and retain thumbnails. Is this by design or is it changeable?

I just did a reinstall of XP Pro and am having trouble with video files being "in use" when trying to move/delete them (only a several second lag, but it is annoying me). It has to do with a preview being generated in the details pane in the bottom left corner of Explorer. I eventually figured out how to turn off the preview option on my last install but have forgotten how I did it. Under folder options I have "do not cache thumbnails" unchecked. Is this the setting I need to change? Or is it somewhere else? It seems to me I need an option to not show a preview in the details pane.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Answer:How to Turn of Thumbnails in Details Pane?

I haven't done an XP install, but I have had problems like yours. Here is how I fix them without reinstalling, in case it may help? (The instructions may be different for XP.)

Thumbnails are used as icons when the folder is in Thumbnail view. This is usually not the problem, since they are usually cached after the first time. I turn them off by getting the Properties window for that folder. (I just go to the parent folder and right-click on the folder there, then choose Properties.) Then in one of the tabs, I find the Enable thumbnail view option and uncheck it. But, again, this is probably not the problem.

The preview thumbnail (actually, the whole details pane) can be turned off by unchecking View as Web Page in the View menu in one folder. Or, you can turn it off for all folders by going to View menu > Folder Options > General tab > choose Custom, then click the Settings button and in the View Web Content in Folders section, choose Only for folders where I select "as Web Page" [View menu]

If I want the details pane, but not the preview, I edit the HTML of the window. I don't know if you want to try this, it can be confusing, but here's what I do, just in case:
I right-click on the detail pane (or you can use the View menu), and click Customize this Folder... then choose create or edit HTML document. This allows me to customize that details pane. To remove only the worst case files from the preview, I see if I can find "var w... Read more

I have my photos stored on an unRAID server. I can browse to these files and open the photos in Windows Photo Viewer. However, if I try to open in Win 8 Photos, the app crashes and I get the error message:

Windows cannot access \\ path to photos
You do not have permission to access \\ path to photos.

I seem to be able to share all file types other than photos. Win 8 Video will open a video file from the same directory that Photo will not. Also, since the photo files will open in Photo Viewer, this doesn't seem to be a permission issue on the server end. Any ideas?

I am running Vista Home ... when in the folder I have my videos in I can see my .avi movies from my old HP dig cam but can not view the thumbnail of the newer .mov videos from my Kodak dig cam. This bugs me. I can play them in quicktime but would love to be able to see the thumbnail preview so sorting them would be a lot faster.

I've googled this and tried several things. Nothing has worked as of yet. Maybe I am not doing something right. I download and installed VLC and 3ivx. I do not want to change any .reg afraid I might mess something up. This machine is only 1 week old.

Someone please help me I don't know what else to do or where else to look.

Answer:Can't view .mov file thumbnails

As you may know, Windows Vista doesn't natively support mov files. VLC can play them, but its decoders are built-in and completely independent of Windows. 3ivx only decodes mov files (and mp4 files and 3gp files) encoded in MPEG-4 (it won't decode mov files in any other codec); not sure about its previewing capabilities.
What you would need is a filter (sometimes called splitter) to enable Windows (and Windows Media Player and Explorer etc.) to sparse mov files. The two most popular ones are Haali's and Gabest's filters. They're not perfect (have a few bugs - notably for mp4 and 3gp files) because they're third-party software, but they work for most files.
I believe Haali's filter is bundled with QuickTime Alternative, which you can get here:
http://www.codecguide.com/download_qt.htm
During installation it will propose to uninstall QuickTime, but that's not necessary. You can have QuickTime and QuickTime Alternative work side by side just fine.
As for Gabest's filter it's built-in Media Player Classic (also installed with QuickTime Alternative). I think you could download the filter alone somewhere in here
http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli/
but I'm not sure how to install it and register it with Windows.

Hello all,
I have what I consider to be a rather unique situation. I have recently been trying to restore an old, uncropped version of a file from about 10 years and about 3 computers ago, naturally impossible under general circumstances. However, the thumbnail for the file still shows the original version, while opening the image in windows media viewer or ms paint reveals that the file in fact contains the new version.

My query was since the thumbnail seems to be saving the original non-cropped version, has it kept a copy of the old file? If so, can the old version be opened so I can view it? I lack information about thumbnails to know whether this is possible or impossible.

Thanks for any assistance.

Answer:Viewing source file for thumbnails.

You would need a copy of the original file. A thumbnail is just a smaller version and does not contain this file. The best you could do is resize the image to whatever size is needed but the quality of the image would suffer.

Hi, I used this tutorial last year, it worked fine and then just a few months ago this happened.

Whenever I save or open a file, this is is what the pop-up menu looks like > link (the folder doesn't work too, but a while ago I restored the icons to default from the tutorial, and now it looks like this)

When I open it using windows explorer and Internet Explorer (ctrl+O) it works fine, but when I use Maxthon 3, Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome it doesn't work. So maybe the problem isn't the browser, maybe it's the computer?
I don't know what happened, it's been months since like this and it's been annoying me (because I can't choose which to upload w/o seeing the thumbnail) so I tried different solutions found in the internet that DIDN'T work:
(I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate x64)uninstalling then re-installing the browser
going to folder and search options > view > unchecking "Always show icons, never thumbnails"
going to control panel > all control panel items > performance information and tools > adjust visual effects > checking "show thumbnails instead of icons"
going to computer > right click hard disk > properties > disk cleanup > checking "thumbnails" > clean up system files (this kind of messed up my thumbnails more)
I tried opening command prompt then type sfc /scannow but it stopped at 20% and said "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation."

First of all I don't understand how you are opening a folder with a browser?
Press the windows logo key + Pause Break to open System Properties and follow the diagram below to "For Cath" and check "Show Thumbnails Instead of Icons".

This may help too: Icon Cache - Rebuild

and

You may need to do a repair install since sfc /scannow won't run.

I can see maybe 2-3 thumbnails preview the rest are icons and i have like 400 items most of them thumbnails/images of some types: png jpg bmp.

My hard disk c: have 93.6 GB free out of 139 GB
And i tried already in the menu: View > Options > Change folder and search options > View and then unchecked Always show icons, never thumbnails. But it didn't help much.

I did new windows 10 clean install today and not yet installed new updates since there was no space on C: so i startec lean up some stuff and so far i have 93.6 GB free space. Maybe the problem is that i need first to install all the updates ?

I tried now to go drive D and same problem most of the images without preview.

Is there a way to make the size of the thumbnails file smaller so these files don't accumulate as much, or even better, is there a way to have Vista purge these files automatically so I don't have to do the disc cleanup method?

Some of the thumbnails aren't showing up windows explorer even though they are the same file type. There will be 12 episodes of a show in .AVI or .MKV, and only 9 will have thumbnails, the other 3 don't. I have the Haali Media Splitter on to show thumbnails and I installed the Windows Service Pack to to it too (not sure which one is actually working, if I had to guess I'd say it's Haali).

To enable the thumbnails on Haali Media Splitter I click it, the went: options → explorer integration → show thumbnails (yes) → thumbnails offset (10000)

Not sure what is wrong...can anyone help?

And this is a problem with pretty much all the file types, some thumbnails showing and some not when they're in the same folder and I got them from the same source (all the files in a folder are either AVI or MKV, but the problem happens with both)

Recently I downloaded a file converter which, after installation, associated all my video files with itself. Previous to downloading this programme my .avi, .mkv files etc were all displayed simply as an icon, yet now they are all displayed as a thumbnail picture. The only solution I have found for reverting my video files back to being displayed simply as an icon is via Folder Options, 'Always show icons, never thumbnails'. However, selecting this option also disables the thumbnail preview for my .jpeg and other image files. Is there any way to disable my video files being displayed with a thumbnail whilst keeping the thumbnail preview for images? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I know that if in Folder Options I choose "Always show icons, never thumbnails' the '.thumbs' file stops being created everytime you view an image file in Explorer. But I do want to see thumbnails, or more specifically I like the idea of viewing the image of the *.jpg, *.dng etc. when in Explorer. However, what I don't like is getting a '.thumbs' file being created.
I'm sure it is possible to have one without the other but can't recall how to do so.
Thank you

Hi,
I know there are some threads about this. but I couldn't solve my problem using those. so I decided to make a new thread instead of bumping the old ones.
Well, Here is my problem:
recently I installed a fresh copy of windows 8 on my PC. it was nothing wrong with it till I installed Kaspersky Endpoint Security 10 (v. 10.1.0.867) & did a reboot.
Now non of my files including picture, audio & video files show thumbnails or even tags (ex mp3 files).
I've tried the solutions stated about turning thumbnails on & off with no luck. in my folder options the option "Always show icons, never thumbnails" is UNCHECKED.

Has anybody faced the problem?? Is the issue from Kaspersky?? Are there any workarounds??

I truly Appreciate any help.

PS. I also have some difficulties pinning folders to windows explorer taskbar icon since then.

Hi, I have a Windows Vista and I'd like all file types from all Media players to display a thumbnail of the video in Windows Explorer as opposed to just showing an icon of the file type. The problem is that in Vista, it only shows thumbnails of Windows Media Player videos and not videos that use VLC Media Player (except .VOB which it does show) or Quicktime. I've done some research online and I've seen that I need to merge a Registry file into the Registry Editor with certain Registry keys in it, so I tried doing it for .MP4 files:
----------------------------------------------------------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mp4\shellex]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mp4\shellex\{3D1975AF-0FC3-463d-8965-4DC6B5A840F4}]
@=""
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mp4\shellex\{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}]
@="{c5a40261-cd64-4ccf-84cb-c394da41d590}"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mp4\shellex\{E357FCCD-A995-4576-B01F-234630154E96}]
@="{9DBD2C50-62AD-11D0-B806-00C04FD706EC}"
----------------------------------------------------------
After I entered the above into the Registry I restarted my PC, and nothing happened, the .MP4 videos still show no thumbnails.

Any suggestions or help is welcome and thanked in advance!

Hi everyone,

I have used a bunch of tutorials from this site over the last few years and never joined up. However, I am infuriated at windows 7 not letting me get my own way with custom icons! Infuriated enough to sign up.

All I wanted was a custom folders icon (for ALL folders) which can be done easy enough, but the catch 22, in order to do this properly, one must turn off thumbnails (organise > folder options > view > always show icons, never thumbnails).

This means you end up with a window with a couple of hundred identical jpeg/png/whatever icons... not very useful when you need a quick overview of contained images within the folder.

So, we turn the thumbnails back on, ah thats better, we can quickly see our images again! Oh wait, those disgusting yellow overlayed thumbnail folders are back!

There needs to be another option in windows 7:

Always show icons (folders only), show file thumbnails

Would be great but I can't find any way to achieve this. Even iconpackager can't do this and I bloody bought it! All that happens is that you end up with your nice custom icon, with a little bit of photo thumbnail sticking out the bottom of it, so you have to 'always show icons, never thumbnails'... well that was a waste of money!

I would install linux instead if it were more useful, changing ALL icons is easy and makes sense in that, and takes about 5mins! I have a lovely custom theme, of course, let down by those yellow folder icons that make me want to puke!

Hi...

I'm an new user to Photoshop CS(Windows) ... I find that in the file browser (I'm looking at RAW images) ... SOME images do not have thumbnails desplayed ... only a generic ICON ... this is maybe 15% of the images...

.... if I select one of these images I can see it in the preview window, and I can open it into Photoshop (via the Camera Raw plug-in) ... but I can't see a thumbnail in the main browsing window ...

... this makes it very difficult to select images for further editing...

... if you know how to correct this problem, or know what the cause might be, please let me know.

Thanks, Peubear

Hi

I'm not talking about PSD files here, just jpgs and other "regular" image formats. I have no problems with seeing thumbnails by default in any other software's File Open dialogs other than Photoshop (CS4 in my case). No matter what I have tried in Folder Options (yadda yadda) PS CS4 refuses to display thumbnails unless I manually choose "Icons" from the view menu once I am in the dialog. (Ideally I'd like it to automatically display Extra Large Icons.) This is driving me nuts as I work on jpg photos all day and every day. Sure I can use Bridge, but it is SO slow, or something else, but someone out there must have a fix? I can't see anything obvious in the Adobe areas of the registry and don't know enough about it to hack it myself. Grateful for any help!

I realize you can use Libraries to get thumbnails, but that's about as many clicks (or more) than File>Open>View>Ex Large thumbnails ... every single time!!

I am using Win7 x64, Photoshop CS4 x86

Hi,

I have unchecked the option to 'show icons instead of thumbnails' (view>options>folder options) and I have checked 'show icons' (performance>advanced) but still I get icons instead of thumbnails. I have closed and restarted file explorer multiple times to no change. I have posted the screenshot below to show the current settings. Any help would be appreciated!

Thank you.

Answer:Thumbnails not displaying: Unchecked 'show icons'/checked 'thumbnails'

When you right click on the folder itself and select properties, there is a tab called customise. In this tab you can select what type of folder you want and choose Pictures. You can have this cascade down to subfolders as well. As for the other settings you mentioned, I usually keep my folder settings as the defaults.

I've been googling around but can't seem to find an answer to this seemingly simple question. The documents and spreadsheets on my desktop show up as a thumbnail preview of the file (which is kinda stupid because all of the documents and spreadsheets look the exact same). So I want these to just show the Word or Excel icon instead. I know you can go to:

Explorer>Tools>Folder Option>View>Files and Folders>"Always show icons, never thumbnails"

But then my picture files just show the Windows Picture Viewer icon instead of the picture thumbnail. I'm just wondering if there's a way to assign icon or thumbnail settings to specific file types or extensions? I'd like my pictures to have thumbnails but all other file types to show only icons. Answer:(Win7) How to show icons for some file types and thumbnails for others?

If you don't explicitly tell Word or Excel to save a thunbmail of the file along with the file, it will use the default Word/Excel document icon (which happens to look like a document from either of those programs). Can't you just change the default icon to something else?

To answer your question, though, no, I don't think it's possible.

I'm running Windows 7 x64, and I can't see any video file thumbnails (ex: .avi, .flv, etc) of the files in my My Videos folder. All video clips work in VLC and WMC.

Addendum: I've tried to solve this problem by downloading the K-Lite Codec for x32 and x64 (as suggested to a user in a different thread), but as seen below, this solution only worked for the .mkv and .wmv files.

Can anyone offer up another solution?

Previously this was just a minor annoyance but now I need a fix. In many of my folders I am missing file names for my files when they're viewed in Thumbnail mode. I have no idea what's causing this to happen, and I've looked everywhere I can think of for a fix.

Can anyone point me to a solution?

I guess I'm not able to delete my thread so I'll edit to post the solution instead. It's a result from holding shift while opening a folder in Thumbnail mode. To correct the missing file names I simply had to hold shift while opening the folder for a second time. Annoying.

Recently a symbol or "mini icon" has started to appearing over lower-left quadrant of file thumbs. It is a blue ~square with 2 horizontal white chevrons, ">>". They cover about 1/4 of each xLg photo icon/ thumbnail. I'd like to get rid of these pesky & unwanted mini-icons. A quick screen print of photo files, as thumbnails, is now useless because so much of each photo is obscured.

Hi there

My Kodal Easyshare digital frame (SV-1011) wont turn on.

This began after i plugged the frame out of the wall while it was turned on.After this it wouldn't turn on when i plugged it back in.

There is a light on the plug/adapter. It stays lighting while i have detached the power cable from the frame itself but when i attach it back into the frame the light starts flickering faintly.

Could this indicate that something is fried in the frame or adapter? Has anyone had any problems like this have any tips or advice?

Id really appreciate it..

Windows XP & IE 8 .
Whenever I add an attachment to my emails, and even here on your website when I uploaded the attached pics, the 'Choose to Upload' pop-up window containing (in this case) my pics ALWAYS (but never used to) opens in the Details mode instead of Thumbnails where I can actually view the pics to be attached prior to attaching them.
I would like the default setting for this occurrence to obviously be in the Thumbnails mode.
In a related issue I would also like to be able to load more than one pic at a time when attaching pics to emails, etc...
Is there such a setting?
Thanks for the assistance.

Answer:Default Settings for 'Choose File To Upload', Displays 'Details' vs 'Thumbnails'

The default is list, not details and no you can't change it that I know of and I'm pretty sure if not absolutely. I wish there was. One of those silly Windows things.
As to your second question, some websites employ technology that allows multiple uploads. The flash uploader here for instance. It's not something in XP that one can change.

I admit, I love Vista and since drivers have become stable, Iíve not had any big issues, but there is one thing that Iíve been trying to figure out for a while now with no success and its really bugging me.

Live preview thumbnails seem to go ďblankĒ after a while. If an app has been running for a while, the live preview gets replaced by a static icon. Seems to be some sort of resource management issue, but Iíve been trying to figure out if there is some sort of configuration that can be adjusted to increase some sort of resource limit or turn it off altogether.

Hey all,

Another minor, non-life-threatening irritation:

Running Windows XP Home Edition on a PC, "5.1.2600 Service Pack 1 Build 2600".

When i browse my folders on Thumbnails view, Windows seems to assign *random* pictures from throughout my hard drive to act as the thumbnail for some folders. Actually it's not totally random; when i assign a picture to act as the thumbnail for one folder, it works fine, but then a week or so later i will find that windows has used that picture as the thumbnail for some other completely unrelated folder, elsewhere on the hard drive.

I can easily fix this by right-clicking on the folder and going to:

Properties -> Customize (tab) -> Choose Picture/Restore Default.

Often, that doesn't work: The properties screen will tell me that the default has been restored, for example, but when i actually look at the folder again, it hasn't actually changed anything.

But then, that problem can be solved by going to

Properties -> Customize (tab) -> Change Icon.

...and re-selecting the icon that was already supposedly being used by that folder. That usually solves the problem.

This is mildly annoying, and if anyone knows a permanent fix, i'd appreciate it. But the main problem I wanted help for was for the "My Documents" folders.

The fix given above will not work for "My Documents", "My Music", "My Pictures", "My Videos", because the properties screens f... Read more

I have just built a new computer, using Windows 7 Pro 64 bit, however, I've noticed when I open Windows explorer, 3 out of 4 times it will continuously search for drives when opening up explorer and not show any drives that are installed. I've tried reformatting, using different hard drives, but the problem persists no matter what I do. I've reinstalled Windows 7 with only a single drive plugged in, tried different SATA ports, but this problem keeps coming back. The only thing I can think of is that the Windows 7 install disk is corrupted and not installing properly.

I've also noticed that once it starts searching like this, the icons wont display in any folder, although the file names will. Likewise, when trying to sort files by date, type, etc, they will not sort.

When this happens, I can easily type in C:\ to get to the drive without problem to access the drive but above problems with icons not showing, sorting, etc still is a problem.

Has anyone had this problem? Know of a way to fix this? I'm not looking forward to having to reformat again as I don't have the time to sit through and reinstall everything again after.

I'm having a bizarre problem on my Windows 10 PC.

For some reason, lots of image thumbnails won't load (particularly PNG files and AVI files), which is extremely frustrating. Sometimes it shows the file type icon, sometimes a generic file icon, and something literally nothing at all.

In addition, if I right click on an image file, and choose "Open with...", explorer freezes and I have to restart it in Task Manager.

Also, Control Panel\Programs\Default Programs\Set Associations perpetually loads for me and I can't set it.

I reset my PC about a week ago, I've tried this solution, I've done check disk and repair disk, and I can't seem to find a solution.

I use thumbnails while I work constantly, so this is a huge detriment to my productivity.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Question: Photo file copying

Hi there, I don't have an ap to copy my photo files onto a disk so how do I do it?

Answer:Photo file copying

By disk do you mean another hard drive or a CD/DVD disc?

IF the latter, get a copy of CDBurnerXP. IF the former, select My Pictures folder, or wherever they are, right click copy and then go to the destination and right click paste.

Later look into a program like SyncToy2 from microsoft or Syncback free version and learn how to set up profiles to copy the photo location to the backup location on a regular schedule, using a dummy test backup folder initially until you get it down pat.

I was using printshop PhotoPro 2.0 to manage photos and accidently overwrote one of my originals with a modified version. I want to restore/recover the original version of the photo (.jpg file). I looked at system restore, but it says it does not change saved files...which is exactly what I want to do. I think I have had techie friends who have done things like this, but I am at a loss. Please let me know if i need to give more info.

Answer:Recovery Of File (photo)

So far as I know, unless the file was either:

a)backed up
b)stored on a Server running Windows Server 2003
c)duplicated earlier for some reason

then you're likely out of luck (I may be wrong - wait for others to reply as they may know a way)

With regard to c), think about where there may be another copy of the image. Did you upload it to a wbsite, or e-mail it to a friend? Also, Photopro may have cached the image when you opened it; run a search in C:\Documents and Settings for all image files. You may get lucky and find it there (be sure to enable searching hidden and system folders first, though)

We live in NC, wife's daughter is in Arizona. Camera is a 10 megapixel. Want to share pics, thinking of file/photo sharing on the net. Anyone have any suggestions, experiences, ideas, horror stories they wish to share. Thanks in advance. David.

From what I understand this is the easiest to use. Picasa itself is a breeze.

Question: Photo file formats

At the moment I use .png for the files that I am saving. As I understand it, this is a lossless compression type. However, I find that a others seem to use .tiff files, which I assume are not compressed.Would I be better advised to use .tiff. or indeed, some other format. My HDD space is not at a premium.

Answer:Photo file formats

Since TIFF and PNG are both lossless it doesn't really matter, which you use. PNG files are often smaller due to better compression. click here for a useful site on the pros and cons of different digital image formats.

Am building a website, when I try to upload scanned photos it only recognises those with jpg or gif file types. I had a 30 day trial of paint shop pro which has now ended as it is expensive to buy.I have Windows XP, is there a programme I am likely to have already which would work so I don't have to buy another? When I scan photos I have the option of saving them in tif format, the only other options are all using paint shop pro.Any ideas please?ThanksChrissie

I have old floppies where 1980's film photos were digitized by Mystic Photo in CT but Mystic disappeared and their predecessor (Kodak?) no longer use ctf and I cannot open my floppies to save to jpg. Roxio Photosuite claims to do this but at a price of more than $70...I searched the net for info but only continuously come up with a definition of ctf being thumbnails, etc...where can I go next to open early files of kids and family....thanks...

Question: Photo File Sizes

I have recently copied a Photo DVD into "My Pictures" on my hard drive in a new folder. The photos are professional but in jpeg format. The total folder size is 1.5GB as there are 200 large files. When I view these direct from the DVD all is O.K. When I view them from the copied folder on my hard drive there is considerable degradation of the picture quality on a number of the individual photos. This suggests to me that the files ahve been compressed. I am running XP with SP2 and have 1Gb ram on my machine. Is the problem that the folder is too larg to load into my RAM ? How can I overcome this problem as I wish to print some of the pictures and do not want a degraded outcome. I have never experienced this problem with any photos previously but then I have never had such a large folder size. Any advice would be helpful

Answer:Photo File Sizes

All jpeg photos have some compression - that is what the format does. The quality of the image may depend on a number of factors, such as how much compression and/or editing and the number of saves made. Also the dimensions of the original picture; hover your mouse pointer over a picture and details should appear - the smaller the dimensions the `grainier` the picture is likely to look.

Question: Photo File Repair

I have a couple of folders of photos where the files appear to be there i.e. they give a filesize and filename but when I try to open them with a photo viewer or paintshop type app, I get an error message along the lines of "Invalid Image" message from Picasa, "Can't Read File Header" from IrfanView or "the file may be unsupported, damaged or corrupted" message from Windows Live Photo Gallery and Windows Photo Gallery."Can't read file header" gives me a clue that the file is somehow damaged. The file listing contains a filesize and filename and I would guess that each file may be repairable.Does anybody know if there is such a program which may attempt to reconstruct or repair a file (or files)? Freeware preferably. I've had a scoot round the web for a couple of nights but I'm a bit suspicious of some of the offerings so a tried and tested suggestion would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

Answer:Photo File Repair

You don?t say where you files are stored but I?ve used this click here with success on several occasions. It?s not free but you can download and try the trial version
