Microsoft Announces Update ActiveSense

Question: Microsoft Announces Update ActiveSense

Looking to alleviate one of the biggest bugbears of Windows users, Microsoft has announced a new technology for the Microsoft Update system - called ActiveSense. The Redmond giant says that it recognises that many of its users find the lengthy and often unwelcome updates, that seem to happen at the most inconvenient times, very unpleasant and has looked to develop the new ActiveSense feature to fix the problem once and for all.Click to expand...

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Microsoft Announces New Monthly Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Creators Update

Microsoft rolls out new cumulative updates every month on Patch Tuesday, including here not only security fixes targeting vulnerabilities in Windows 10 and installed Microsoft software, but also OS improvements and other tweaks refining the overall experience.

Today, the company announced that it would publish a second cumulative update for businesses running Windows 10 Creators Update, this time including non-security fixes.

Microsoft says that although it wants to release one such cumulative update every month (in addition to the security release on Patch Tuesday), there might be cases when more than a single extra cumulative update is shipped, depending on the bugs that it needs to fix.

These updates will be listed as ?Updates? in WSUS and Configuration Manager, with certain exceptions when critical issues affecting organizations are targeted, so the updates will be flagged as ?Critical Updates.?

Customers who use Windows Update for Business won?t have these updates installed automatically if options to defer quality updates are in place.

You can simply ignore these updates
The software giant explains that Windows 10 users getting these updates will be allowed to deploy them just like the updates that are shipped on Patch Tuesday, but at the same time, be provided with options to deploy each of them only to a subset of devices.

?This enables the organization to ensure that... Read more

Microsoft Announces Patch for Critical Windows 10 Anniversary Update Bug

Soon after Microsoft rolled out the Windows 10 Anniversary Update on August 2, the firm started getting reports of a potential bug that might impact partitions on computers that upgrade to the new version.

Specifically, users were complaining that after installing the Anniversary Update, some of their partitions were no longer visible in Windows 10, making it impossible to access data that was stored here.

Without a doubt, many thought their data was gone, but Microsoft rushed to acknowledge the bug shortly after that, explaining that it was working on a fix, and no files were lost despite the fact that partitions were no longer visible.

And recently, Microsoft announced that a patch was ready, and it would release it to users as part of the next Windows update patch, without actually providing specifics on when exactly this is scheduled to take place.

?Thanks for everyone?s input and patience. Microsoft is planning to release a fix to address the majority of the misidentified partitions in an upcoming Windows Update,? a company engineer said.

Possibly releasing to insiders first
Furthermore, this message doesn?t state whether Windows insiders would get it first or not, but the chances are that they will given the fact the original post also highlights the steps necessary to get updates as part of the Windows Insider program.

In an effort to boost sagging revenue growth, Microsoft today announced it will begin selling advertising space on the company's world famous Blue Screen of Death (BSOD)©.

The screen, displayed whenever Windows cannot recover from an error in the operating system's core, until now has historically served as a display of unintelligible diagnostic data that has not made any sense to anyone, ever, according to a survey conducted by the Gartner Group. In addition, the BSOD has scared most users because it was composed mainly of hexadecimal digits that, which in extreme cases, can lead to hallucinations, epileptic seizures and homosexuality in primates and rats.Click to expand...

Well, here's a merry friggin xmas from our dear f(r)iend, Micro$oft :

After the close of business on 12 December 2002, Microsoft announced a raft of Windows-related security flaws with severity ratings ranging from "low" to "critical." The flaws are present in many parts of Windows and its bundled software, including Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine, its proprietary NetBIOS-based networking, and the Windows kernel itself.

Some of these flaws have been known, at least to some extent, to hackers for several months. At one time, Microsoft acknowledged the discoverers of such flaws in its security bulletins, but has apparently ceased to do so, as no credits appear in this latest salvo of warnings.

For the average user, the most serious flaws are the ones in the JVM, which allow the user's system to be taken over completely if he or she views a hostile Web page -- or reads or previews a hostile e-mail message with a client that uses Microsoft's Internet Explorer to render messages. (Such clients include most versions of Outlook and Outlook Express, and Eudora with the "Use Microsoft's viewer" option enabled.)

For windows 10, Microsoft has announced a pretty neat feature: Hololens.

Basically, Hololens are glasses that display holographs onto any surface (that you can only see). It can do anything from modifying 3d printable models to playing minecraft - on your kitchen table

What do you think? Will you buy Hololens? Or do you think it's just another business "experiment" by Microsoft? Answer in the poll or the comments. I personally think it's pretty amazing.

Announcing the Windows 8 Editions

Answer:Microsoft Announces the Windows 8 editions

I'm glad they are going simple on this one. I'm seeing a lot of people complaining about the Windows 8 RT edition, though. I don't get the hate, though. It sounds like they are complaining just to complain.
There are so many things out there with full names that are never used. I'm going to buy a Windows 8 tablet. Unless I'm a techie, I'll never know that it's technically a "Windows 8 RT OS powered by an ARM CPU touchscreen tablet device".
So far, it looks like Windows 8 may be getting more trolls than Vista ever did. They are complaining about anything and everything - the SKU name of a tablet edition that isn't even available to purchase as an end user. I can't wait to see/hear the complaining when they release the box art for the retail boxes. I know there will be a lot of complaining on that one, too!

We know that power users have unique needs to run efficiently and we take the feedback we hear seriously. Much of that valuable feedback comes through the Windows Insider Program. Today we are very excited to announce a new edition of Windows 10 Pro designed to meet the needs of our advanced users deploying their Workstation PCs in demanding and mission-critical scenarios. Windows 10 Pro for Workstations will be delivered as part of our Fall Creators Update, available this fall.

Windows 10 Pro for Workstations, created with feedback from Windows Insiders, introduces new features to leverage the power of high-end PC hardware
The value of Windows 10 Pro for Workstations is directly aligned to increase the performance and reliability of high-end PCs, with the following features:
ReFS (Resilient file system): ReFS provides cloud-grade resiliency for data on fault-tolerant storage spaces and manages very large volumes with ease. ReFS is designed to be resilient to data corruption, optimized for handling large data volumes, auto-correcting and more. It protects your data with integrity streams on your mirrored storage spaces. Using its integrity streams, ReFS detects when data becomes corrupt on one of the mirrored drives and uses a healthy copy of your data on the other drive to correct and protect your precious data.
Persistent memory: Windows 10 Pro for Workstations provides the most demanding apps and data with the performance they require with non-volatile memory module... Read more

Microsoft announces a third ring for Windows 10 Insiders -- 'Release Preview'If you?re a Windows 10 Insider you currently have the choice of being in either the Fast or Slow rings. The Fast ring is used for cutting edge -- and potentially more buggy -- builds, while Slow ring releases tend to be pushed out less frequently, but are proven to be more stable.
Which ring you choose depends on how desperately you want to try out new builds -- it?s safe to say Fast ring releases aren?t really suited for use on your main PC. However, from today there?s now a third choice available to Insiders, and that?s the Release Preview ring.

This new ring, for both PC and mobile, focuses on Insiders who want to take hardly any risks at all, but still gain access to important OS, application, and driver updates before they are pushed out to non-insiders.
Builds on the Release Preview ring are based on the Current Branch, that is (for now) Build 10586.
Microsoft?s Gabe Aul explains the three rings like this:

Fast -- Best for Insiders who enjoy being the first to get access to builds and feature updates, with some risk to their devices in order to identify issues, and provide suggestions and ideas to make Windows software and devices great.Slow -- Best for Insiders who enjoy getting early access to builds and feature updates, with less ... Microsoft has revealed its next version of Windows due in late 2015, Windows 10...yes, 10! Not nine, like the number that sequentially follows the last couple of iterations, Windows 7 and 8, but 10...perhaps it's trying to distance itself from Windows 8 as much as it can, given the operating system's less than stellar reception

While Windows 8 tried to use a tablet-like tile-heavy interface on a PC, much to many people's chagrin, Windows 10 will tailor its UI depending on the sort of device it's running on...Windows VP Joe Belfiore demonstrated Windows 10's Start Menu in the following video...it's back to the good old-fashioned toolbar like the day of yore, though we get one of those fancy schmancy tile layouts once you actually click on the Start Menu...

Microsoft will soon release a new mobile OS for embedded and enterprise devices based on Windows Mobile 6.5, to be followed by an enterprise-focused version of Windows Phone 7 in 2011, Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer said by video at the launch of a new Motorola enterprise smartphone on Thursday.
"In the next six months we will release a new embedded OS called Windows Embedded Handheld, based on Windows Mobile 6.5 technologies ... [and] in the second half of 2011, we will release a version of Windows Embedded Handheld based on Windows Phone 7 technology," Ballmer said on the video.
Microsoft will spend the intervening time "working on a clear path for enterprises to migrate their line-of-business applications to our new application platform" for Windows Phone 7, Ballmer said.
Ballmer's announcement was made at the launch of the Motorola ES400, a Windows Mobile 6.5.3-based handheld designed for businesses which will be sold through Sprint's enterprise channels. Knowing Microsoft's future plans is important for corporate IT managers to do their planning and continue to work with Microsoft, said Motorola's president of enterprise mobility solutions, Gene Delaney.
"That's one of the key differentials from a consumer type environment," Delaney said.
The ES400 is part of Motorola's successful "enterprise digital assistant" line, which addresses the specific needs of larger businesses. Motorola's EDA devices are produced... Read more

http://news.softpedia.com/news/micr...ndows-10-edge-browser-extensions-508642.shtml

One of the most important improvements brought to Windows 10 users by the Anniversary Update released on August 2 is the addition of support for browser extensions, with Edge now becoming a fully-grown app that should be able to compete against Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox.

And while opinions on this are still mixed, Microsoft is working hard to bring more extensions on Windows 10, and recently the company confirmed that several new add-ons are already on their way.

The essential extension package can already be downloaded and installed by Windows 10 users, but it?s no secret that Edge is lagging behind rivals when it comes to the number of extensions available in their store, as both Chrome and Firefox offer a huge list of options at the moment.

uBlock Origin, Ghostery, & Turn Off the Lights on their way
The software firm, however, is working to address this, and the company has confirmed that several new extensions will be posted in the store very soon for all users. Insiders will get them first to try them out and provide feedback, just like it happens with Windows 10 features, but once the go-ahead is given, everyone should be able to download them from the store.

Microsoft is holding an event on its campus January 21st to talk about the next chapter of Windows 10 and it is expected the company will talk about the consumer release of Windows 10. The event is said to be an all day affair as well and Neowin will be there.

For those who are curious, the event will be live streamed this time around and will include presentations from Satya Nadella, Terry Myerson and Joe Belfiore, and Phil Spencer. That crew represents the top of the org chart for nearly all things Microsoft which means that there will be much to talk about at the event.

The name of the release may not be called the consumer preview but may be called January Technical Preview and could be part of a new release cycle where the company pushes out a new release each month. No word on all of the topics that will be covered but seeing that it is an all-day event, but we hope to hear about Windows Phone and Windows RT. Seeing that Phil Spencer will be there as well, there should be some Xbox content too.

While we wait to see if any of the announcements surface before the announcement, it looks like January 21st will be a very busy day.

New anti-malware solution will broaden PC protection and help improve Windows experience.

REDMOND, Wash. ? Nov. 18, 2008 ? To address the growing need for a PC security solution tailored to the demands of emerging markets, smaller PC form factors and rapid increases in the incidence of malware, Microsoft Corp. plans to offer a new consumer security offering focused on core anti-malware protection.
Code-named ?Morro,? this streamlined solution will be available in the second half of 2009 and will provide comprehensive protection from malware including viruses, spyware, rootkits and trojans. This new solution, to be offered at no charge to consumers, will be architected for a smaller footprint that will use fewer computing resources, making it ideal for low-bandwidth scenarios or less powerful PCs. As part of Microsoft?s move to focus on this simplified offering, the company also announced today that it will discontinue retail sales of its Windows Live OneCare subscription service effective June 30, 2009.
?Customers around the world have told us that they need comprehensive, ongoing protection from new and existing threats, and we take that concern seriously,? said Amy Barzdukas, senior director of product management for the Online Services and Windows Division at Microsoft. ?This new, no-cost offering will give us the ability to protect an even greater number of consumers, especially in markets where the growth of new PC purchases is outpaced only by the growth of malware.?... Microsoft today released Windows 10 build 14372 to the Fast ring for both PC and Mobile. The news comes just a day after releasing build 14371 for PCs.

As we get closer to the release of the Anniversary Update next month, we can expect builds to become more stable while omitting new features. Combined with the fact that we got a new build so recently, it's no surprise that there's not much new in today's build.

Mainly, the new build offers a new extension for Microsoft Edge:

Evernote Web Clipper for Microsoft Edge: Clip the web pages you want to keep. Save them in Evernote and easily find them on any device. Visit our extensions page at the Microsoft Edge Dev website to learn more and try it out for yourself.

Dona Sarkar also wants to thank everyone for participating in the Bug Bash. Insiders completed ~71,000 Quests and filed 81,217 pieces of feedback.

If you're on the Fast ring, you can get build 14372 by checking for updates. If not, you can sign up for the Fast ring on PCs by going to Windows Update -> Advanced options, turning on Insider builds, and when the PC reboots, setting it to the Fast ring. For Mobile, you'll need the Windows Insider app.

* MICROSOFT STANDARDIZES SUPPORT LIFECYCLE
In a bid to give customers a clearer understanding of product support, Microsoft announced yesterday that it's giving all its products a consistent and predictable support roadmap. Originally, the company published a set of support guidelines for Windows products only but developed the more comprehensive set of support policies after receiving customer feedback. Under the new plan, business and development software and most consumer, multimedia, and hardware products will receive support for at least 5 years from the date of the product's general availability. Consumer products that release a new version each year--such as Microsoft Money or Microsoft Encarta--now include at least 3 years of support. And most Microsoft products now include at least 8 years of online self-support.

"In responding to what we heard from customers, Microsoft worked closely with customers, business and industry partners, leading analysts, and research firms to determine what a clear and consistent support lifecycle policy would look like," said Lori Moore, corporate vice president for Microsoft Product Support Services. "The policy takes effect [October 15] and applies to most products currently available via retail purchase or volume licensing and future release products."

In addition to so-called mainstream support--all the support options and programs that customers receive today, including no-charge incident support, paid ... Read more

I have a new laptop with Windows XP SP2 on it, IE6 (though I use Firefox, not IE), and MS Office 2003 Student Edition. The latest update that popped up as "high priority" from Windows Update is this GDI+ Detection Tool (KB873374).

It sounds like you have to install it then run it and then visit MS Office website to check for updates...? Is this worth doing? Can it cause more problems than it will help? (I thought I've read about issues when updating MS Office with security patches...? And that you have to download yet something else to even check for Office security updates...?)

Or do Office security updates come through Windows Update, and I don't need to worry about this? (But if that's the case, then why even have this GDI+ thing available?)

I'm always worried about ending up with a bunch of conflicts with other programs like AVG, ZA, AutoGK, DVDShrink, etc. And I'm always hesitant to install something that has to run on my system.

I've got AVG and ZA, keep both up to date, and I have Automatic Updates turned on just to let me know when there's a critical update (so I don't have to visit the Windows Update site to get updates).

I was thinking I would only do the updates to Office that come through Automatic Updates and not worry about any others...

Also, what's the difference between Microsoft Update and Windows Update? Is it better to have Microsoft Update, or does that have its own set of problems associated with it? (A... Read more

Answer:Questions About Microsoft Gdi+ Detection Tool & Microsoft Update Vs. Windows Update

Well to start off the difference between windows update and microsoft update is as follows. Windows update is what originally comes with the computer and only updates the windows platform. If you choose to upgrade to the microsoft update it will check all of your microsoft programs for updates.
As far as going to the office website for updates... unless you want to install non-critical updates to your office suite then you shouldn't have to at all. Finally - that GDI+ detection tool is the little program microsoft uses to scan your computer for any of their products - that is if you use microsoft update and not the original windows update.
So if you like your computer to maintain critical updates by itself for the microsoft programs than yes use microsoft update and yes install the GDI+ decection tools.

Hope this helps you out!

Answer:Virus/spyware not letting me open microsoft /microsoft update website

Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here or here.
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool. When done, DDS will open two (2) logs
1. DDS.txt
2. Attach.txt
Save both reports to your desktop.
Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here. Extract the contents of the zipped file to your desktop.
Double click GMER.exe. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please agree to do so.
If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO.
In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...Sections
IAT/EAT
Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
Show All (don't miss this one)

Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
Once the scan completes, click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "ark.txt".
Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries without proper guidance from an expert user.

...when finished, please post those logs back here. Thanks!

On my desktop (windows xp) I have Microsoft Works Suite 2005. Recently Windows update gave me an update for Microsoft Works Suite 2003. My computer accepted it ok........but, my laptop (windows vista) rejected the update? Is there an update for the 2005 version or do they just bunch them together?

I've just inherited an Acer computer and LCD monitor; I'm running it on XP. On start-up, pre-Windows, I get a screenful of ACER on a light -coloured background. I realise it's an Acer monitor and don't really want to be told several times a day. I have Xteq but it doesn't seem to deal with this. I'd be grateful for any advice on this.

ASUS today announced PCE-AC88, a dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi PCI Express® (PCIe®) adapter that instantly upgrades a desktop PC to the latest ultra-fast wireless standard. PCE-AC88 is the first PCIe adapter to feature a 4x4 (4 transmit, 4 receive) MIMO design that delivers AC3100-class speeds of up to 2100Mbps on the 5GHz band and 1000Mbps on the 2.4GHz band. For the best signal reception, PCE-AC88 includes a magnetic antenna base that allows flexible placement of the four detachable external antennas on any suitable surface. PCE-AC88 allows PC users to take advantage of the latest high-speed 802.11ac routers, which offer wireless speeds that match or exceed wired Gigabit Ethernet networking speeds. When paired with a 4x4 802.11ac router, PCE-AC88 unleashes the full performance and coverage potential of the 4x4 MIMO technology, but it is also backward-compatible with all existing Wi-Fi standards.

Answer:ASUS Announces PCE-AC88

Woohoo! I've been waiting for an adapter like this before I made the jump to an 802.11ac router and ditched the ethernet cabling strung out on the floor of my apartment.

Albatron announces 6800GS for AGP

The GeForce 6800GS for PCI Express is a respin of well-known NV41 chip with native PCI Express interface (NV41a) and 6800GS AGP is actually the original NV41, first 110nano chip for nVIDIA. The NV41 chip was also known as "6800 with working PureVideo acceleration", altough you loose one Quad (4 Pixel Processors) and a Vertex Shader. The board pretty much looks the same as any 6800 and 6800GT board with single-slot cooling, and is sharing the clock-speed with 6800GT. So, the 6800GS AGP works at 350 MHz for the 12 pipe GPU, and 1000 MHz for 256MB of GDDR-3 memory.

Altough the PCIe version of the board works at 425 MHz, the AGP version is clocked less by whole 75 MHz. If you ask yourselves why, we can't think about anything else but politics. Our guess is that nVIDIA tries to make PCI Express look better by higher clocking the PCIe products - remember 6600GT in AGP version? It had 100 MHz slower memory (same GPU clock though), and when clocked to same speeds as its PCIe board, it beated the schyte out of the PCIe product. Mostly because PCIe was Intel-only domain, and we all know how Intel gets demolished by AMD in games.

P.S. 6600GT AGP at 500/900 MHz beated 500/1000 in almost every game, so even that move didn't helped the PCI Express version.

Nikon today announced that it is "working on" a new budget priced digital SLR, the D70 and a new complementary DX lens. From the hints given in the 'development press releases' it's fairly easy to come to the conclusion that this camera will be fully announced at PMA 2004 and should hit the stores shortly afterwards. Considering its "budget price" and considering the current competition I will make a wild guess that the D70 will be based around the D100 engine with the same six megapixel sensor. Styling hints however do appear to be taken from the D2H. Body only price of the D70 is expected to be $999 (in the US) or € 1,100 (in Europe). http://www.dpreview.com/news/0312/03120301nikond70.asp

Apple announces Windows browser

Answer:Apple Announces Windows Browser

It can be downloaded h e r e.From the site:Security Apple engineers designed Safari to be secure from day one.Thank goodness! Finally a browser that won't be needing security updates! Seriously, setting aside the fact that no program is ever perfect, it does seem like a good product. It's main competitor, in my opinion, is Firefox though, and not Internet Explorer as most seem to imply (TV and newspaper articles I've read.) Most people get IE for free with their PC, so the battle is mainly convincing folks to use an alternative. Also, it does say it is a "Public beta", so we shouldn't be too hard on it until it goes final. It will run on an iPhone - now that's got me all tingly inside.

Google has announced that they plan to release a Chrome based OS.

Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks. Google plans to open-source its code later this year and offer Google powered netbooks in 2010. Company officials confirmed that Google Chrome OS will run on both x86 as well as ARM chips. Google is currently working with multiple OEMs to bring a number of netbooks to market next year bundled with the new Chrome OS.

Google Chrome OS is a new project, separate from Android. Chrome OS is being created for people "who spend most of their time on the web" according to Sundar Pichai, VP Product Management at Google.

The move is ambitious and has wide spread implications not just to consumers but to dominant market leaders Microsoft and Apple. Google has managed to dominate the search market and internet advertising space and having an operating system it controls will certainly help keep them at number one in those markets.

It's not going to be an easy future for the Google OS, Microsoft officials claim that 96% of netbooks run Windows so penetrating that market share will be tough. Google is in an advantageous position to market its Google Apps to compete with Microsoft's Office products. Could this be the equivalent of Apple's AppStore for iPhone where Google provides a controlled and secure development environment for web developers?

Visa has announced new global best practices for data field encryption, also known as end-to-end encryption - a much-discussed solution in the wake of the Heartland Payment Systems breach. Announced by the global credit card company on Monday, these best practices are designed to further the payment industry's efforts to develop a common, open standard while providing guidance to encryption vendors and early adopters. Data field encryption protects card information from the swipe to the acquirer processor with no need for the merchant to process or transmit card data in the "clear."

The Radeon HD 5450 offers entry level performance and ultra-low power consumption and also supports AMD?s multi-monitor technology called ATI Eyefinity and their ATI Stream technology. Radeon HD 5450 review

Quote:
We stated it several times in this review, the Radeon HD 5450 is obviously not intended for gaming. For everything else you can think about, it is working pretty well though. We like the fact that the 5450 can be completely passively cooled, we like that it can support three monitor simultaneously and we simple like what it does and offers for the money.
For just 50 USD you receive a really funky HTPC card with wide connectivity, Blu-ray decoding and acceleration. And then the 80 shader cores can really help you out with software like Mediaplayer Classis Home Theatre edition as you are not only accelerating DXVA 1080P content, you can enhance it as well. So in that respect is really is good value for money.

Hey guys. We have an issue on our hands here with a computer. It has similar symptoms to another infected computer, but the fix that I used on that computer did not fix the issues on this computer. Here are the issues reported:

1) The microsoft update website does not work. It instantly goes to "page not found." Every other website works just fine.
2) Random url redirects to advertisement websites.
3) The avast antivirus cannot update, loses connection with server (likely an infection is blocking this update)

The following fixes have been attempted:

1) Numerous runs of malware bytes.
2) Numerous scans with avast and spybot search and destroy.
3) Logging into the recovery console and typing fixmbr.

Tell me what you see in the logs, and as always, thank you so much for your time and help. Posted here is the DDS log, the other logs are attached:

MS.NetFramework 1.1 Service Pack 1 Security Update for windows 2000, XP, Vista, 2008, Windows7 and Windows Server 2008R2 (KB953297).' The error code was 0X64C.

I checked back in my logs and found that my computer has been attempting this update since October 2009!

When I tried manually at the Microsoft site, it said I needed to upload ActiveXControl, which I did. It still couldn't successfully update that security.

I have the log. Would you like for me to attach? I just did it a few days ago.

Thanks,
Sue Ellen

Hallo,

excuse me for my mistakes bu I am not a native English speaker.

I run a Windows 7 Pro sp1 x64 and I use NTBackup.exe to perform my weekly full backup (I know that NTBackup is not meant to be run on Windows 7, but it perfectly fits my needs and it perfectly run until last windows update).

Since last windows update of 10/02/2015, NTbackup fails and in the NTBackup log I find this message: "Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:Catastrophic failure".
Looking into Windows Event Log/Applications I find 3x error messages related to in VSS, where the only really significant one is "Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error calling routine CoCreateInstance.  hr = 0x80004002. 42554543584D4C43333533320000000042554543584D4C433334393400000000".

I spent the last three hours reading about potential NTBackup issues and I think I can exclude those related to VSS itself because:
- the "Volume Shadow Copy" and the "Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider" services perfecly start, stop and restart
- I can browse previous versions of files being saved (e.g. because of system restore points)
- the "vssadmin list writers" reports all writers being stable and with no errors
I therefore wanted to try and uninstall the KB3032622 but was unable to, since it is not listed in those than can be uninstalled.
Here my questions:
1- Is anybody experiencing my issue?
2- Has anybody been able to solve it? ... Read more

Answer:Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 Update 4 Redistributable Package (KB3032622) breaking NTBackup

the only other thoughts I have;
- it could be broken, because it was never intended to function, and it has only worked ok until now as a happy accident
- it's extremely unlikely that MSFT would have ever tested for the use of WinXp NTBackup on Win7, so unlikely to get formal support for the scenario
- there may be others with related experience, you may find in the dedicated storage/backup forums like

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/home?forum=winserverfiles or

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/home?forum=windowsbackup or perhaps on other discussion forums (non-MSFT forums) ?Don

Hello! For about the past two years I've been having troubles with Windows Update, and it's pretty much stopped checking for updates and updating in general. I didn't think much of it, but now I feel like it's affecting MSE.

Recently I had an issue with updating it, so I had to uninstall it via the Microsoft Support website because I couldn't uninstall it normally. But when I triy to reinstall it, it gets to about the point where it seems like it's installing, and then it stops and says there was an error with the installation. I've tried just about every suggestion and troubleshooting that the Microsoft website offers me, but nothing seems to be working.

I've ran Malware Bytes, Windows Defender, TDSSKiller, and even Microsoft Security Scanner; nothing detects any malware or spyware, so I'm getting the feeling that something might be corrupted! I made another post more in depth about it here, but I feel like I might not get any good help.

If anyone has any suggestions or solutions, I'd really appreciate it!!

Hello,

Recently Microsoft has been trying to update my software with a security update

{Security Update for Microsoft Office XP (KB921596)}

Unfortunately something is going wrong and I am told that Microsoft was unable to update the security update.

At the moment when I switch off my PC, the turn off button is showing the multicoloured shield next to it (meaning it will update before switching off)

I think it is trying to update the same security update as above.

The situation has been like this for maybe a fortnight now.

Please could you help me to sort the situation out.

Many thanks

PS, My security software (Kaspersky Internet Security 2009) has been flashing up a message about Key logging… (what ever that is) whenever I click on & open up my media playing program InterVideo WinDVD 5….. Could this have anything to do with the aforementioned Microsoft Security update ?

Sorry if my post title is a little longwinded - but these three problems seem to be related. After installing and running MSE I have been unable to update definitions either manually or automatically. At the same time I noticed that microsoft automatic updates are getting to around 28 percent and then stopping - not fully downloading or installing. I cannot get through to any microsoft websites now - but all other sites are fine. wuauserv and bits are missing from services also. Have I been sneakily virused by something which MSE hasnt picked up. I tried to run malicious software removal tool - it downloads alright but wont install - says its not a valid win32 application. I correctly downloaded the 32bit app. Can anyone shed some light on any of this. I dont want to rebuild again - again. Thanks.

HP Envy 17 3D (M0del: LV045UA#ABA) with Radeon 6850M and Mobile Intel HD Graphics.

On 9/3/11 the Microsoft update site provided a 150+ MB update for the video system. After the update downloaded and began to install, the video system crashed (the screen went blank) and did not recover after more than an hour.

I then performed a system image restore from a backup external hard drive. I tried again to install the update and again the video system crashed.

Anyone else experience similar problems with this update?

Answer:Update From Microsoft Update Site Crashes Video System

LMC, welcome to the Seven Forums.

What happened is your laptop has switchable graphics and will only work properly with the driver from the laptop manufacturer, in your case HP (or any other laptop with switchable graphics). Problem is that WU is essential stupid in that it doesn't know that and only sees one or the other of the video cards in the laptop, and as a result offers and installs one that won't work with it.

In this case stop trying to install it as it will never work. Just hide the update in WU so you don't see it and only ever install a video card driver update from HP.

Trend Micro HijackThis has been a free utility that generates an in-depth report of registry and file settings from your computer. HijackThis makes no separation between safe and unsafe settings in its scan results ? this offers you the ability to selectively remove items from your machine. In addition to this scan-and-remove capability, HijackThis comes with several tools that are useful for manually removing malware from a computer.

At this time, Trend Micro has decided to move the source code for HijackThis to an open source location. Open source developers can now take the source code and make their own modifications and additions they feel are needed. Answer:Trend Micro Announces HijackThis to Go Open Source

Good decision from Trend Micro. HijackThis wasn't one of the products on the high-list. It wasn't getting updated that much, and it really needed the open-source community to go ahead and improve on it, and update it properly.

However, this will likely mean Trend Micro's 100% abandoned this project, so don't expect any more updates.

Hi,

I'm using "3" Broadband, which doesn't have it's own email, so I am using my Hotmail addresses and download these through the Outlook Connector programme, which is not very satisfactory at the best of times.

This morning when I opened Office Outlook, I got a message saying I had to update Outlook Connector, which I duly did but now it seems to be in a loop and I still get a message to download the update, even though I have done so, so the update has obviously not updated properly.

Without this updatge I cannot read any new emails through Microsoft Office Outlook and I have to go to my Hotmail account.

Does anybody know how to fix this? I have Windows Vista and my firewall is Comodo and my antivirus is Avira.

Hello, I previously has Norton on my computer with an expired subscription. A Norton pop up kept appearing, the scan wouldnt run and my laptop kept turning itself off. I uninstalled Norton and the problem with turning off has resolved. I then downloaded Microsoft Security Essentials to use as my virus scanner. It installed OK but would not update. I posted this problem on another forum here: http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/msestart/thread/84452f5d-bde2-46d9-afbe-4c2a582a4e3b and after following the instructions it started working. However when following those steps I noticed my Windows Update will not update, and hasnt done since May! If I click on update the green bar moves but never gets anywhere, ive left it for 15min+ and it just keeps saying its checking for update. Now Security Essentials is doing the same as before, getting halfway through updating and stopping, and when I go to close it its says its not responsing, as does windows updater.

On the last forum it was suggested there may be underlying issues and after googling my problem I came across this forum which I am now going to use from now on. I dont know anything about computers and have no idea how to go about investigating this myself so any help at all is greatly appreciated. Thanks very much for taking the time to read this.

Hello,

I am very new to your forum and was introduced to it by members of another computer/security-related forum, the name of which escapes me at the moment. This post concerns the owner of a British company that produces a "PAL Spyware Remover" called Privacy Tools 2004 - http://www2.*palsol.com/spyrem_offer/index.html?hop=ash1ey* BE_CAREFUL. Eldar, a member of another forum site which I am a member of, Spyware Warrior, downloaded, installed, updated, and tested Privacy Tools 2004 on his system. He did not like PT 2004 and posted the following Negative review (opinion) at Download.com (Eldar also posted his review on Page 1 of the SW thread - ):

Why are the third party start menu replacements revving up again, when Windows 10 supposedly has a start menu? I think its obvious - Windows 10's "start menu" isn't the authentic start menu many customers want, and while things started out somewhat promising in the earlier Win10 TP builds, Microsoft seems to be drifting further and further into bad territory in the more recent builds, to the point the "mini start screen" and search mess as it exists in the current TP is turning people off.

So, Microsoft is at a crossroads - re-introduce options for people to run the authentic Start Menu they know and love, or prop up third party start menu replacements for yet another Windows cycle. Personally I'm going to wait for StartIsBack to update for Windows 10 RTM - that developer always had the most authentic start menu for Windows 8.

http://www.neowin.net/news/stardock-announces-start10-a-windows-10-start-menu-replacement

Answer:Stardock announces Start10 start menu replacement for Win10

Probably has to do with people still not liking the tiles part bloating up the traditional Start Menu. I think people are happiER that Microsoft has re-integrated the traditional Start Menu, but slightly unhappy about the extra crap on the right.

I think we're at a bargaining point right now. Metro and the Start Screen is still there, alas miniaturized, while the Start Menu is good, but not great. Compromises always leave both parties wanting more and I think it's good enough that it'll be a successful operating system. All Microsoft has to do to become successful with any UI changes is to just give people the damn option to go back to what they're accustomed to. This isn't new territory to do that either, they've done it for decades. They talked about how statics showed people hardly used certain features and that's why Windows 8 was built the way it was, well the same statistics should show what people like if they care to listen (and Microsoft historically is stubborn).

Source: New Version 10 additions boltser encryption and security

Speaking at a press event in Bratislava yesterday ESET?s chief technology officer Palo Luka announced some of the new encryption features that have been added as part of the company?s Version 10 release of its consumer security software, which launched last month.

?Version 10 was probably the smoothest and best release so far,? Luka claimed. ?The features are pretty remarkable,? and are detailed below:

Script-based Attack Protection
Detects attacks by malicious scripts that try to exploit Windows Power Shell. Also detects malicious JavaScripts that can attack via your browser, with Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Microsoft Internet Explorer and Microsoft Edge browsers all supported.

Luka explained that this new protection is especially useful in defending against ?the worst kind of malware that you can get these days when you are a home user or a consumer?, which is ransomware.

Protection Against Ransomware
This adds another layer of protection against especially nasty types of malware. This layer is tracking processes and activity, thus alerting the user if a suspicious behavior is taking place.

Home Network Protection
This addition allows users to prepare for IoT threats in the home, enabling them to test their home router for vulnerabilities. What?s more, it also provides an easy-to-access list of connected devices.

?Often we don?t even know what?s connected to our networks,? ... Read more

If you used an early version of Windows 8, you will know that it did not ship with a Start menu and because of this, many companies built products to fill this gap. Stardock, who built Start8, is back with a new version of their popular application for Windows 10 called Start10.

This time around, Stardock is making it easy to once again use a Windows 7 style Start menu with Windows 10. There are also modern interpretations of the Windows 7 menu too; we have attached a gallery at the bottom of this post so you can see what some of the options look like.

The app allows you to take full control of your desktop and will also allow you to remove the Start button on the desktop too. You can also select the icon size inside the menu, show or hide user pictures and a bunch of other options to customize the menu to your liking.

Answer:Stardock announces Start10, a Windows 10 Start menu replacement

Stardock is a good company. I was impressed by their interaction with customers in the development of Start8 (they even included in it one of my suggestions). Start8 has been just about the best $5 investment I've ever made in software. When I migrate to Windows 10 (probably toward the end of the free upgrade period) I'll definitely purchase Start10.
