X1 - erratic trackpoint - Synaptics 19.3.4.99

Question: X1 - erratic trackpoint - Synaptics 19.3.4.99

Hi - I buy Lenovos because of their trackpoint. My most recent Lenovo is an X1 Carbon. I was much surprised to note that the X1 appears to be the first ThinkPad that will no longer allow me to turn off the touchpad from the Mouse Settings. Never mind - I disabled it for good in the BIOS. (I would like to have the Mouse Settings back because I occasionally allow touchpad users on my laptop and they simply cannot cope.) Anyway, from day #1 of ownership of this laptop, I noticed some very odd behaviour of the trackpoint: It simply "wanders off". It likes the left margin a lot, and the top left corner still more. It is possible to force the cursor out of this position (by pushing hard against the trackpoint) but as soon as I let go of the trackpoint again, it wanders back. Thing is, the problem will go away after a while. "a while" may be anything between 10 and 60 secs. I thought it might be a h/w bug - the trackpoint perhaps being "stuck" and needing to relax - but it occurs so often that I am more inclined to thing it is a driver bug. I believe to be on the latest driver 19.3.4.99 so consider this post as a heads-up - something is still not quite right here. PS: I am not a geat fan of reboots. So I have disabled Updates on my Win10Pro. I was most recently forced into a reboot (first time in 3 months or so) because whenever I clicked the middle mouse button, my screen would turn off. After a 2hr update extravaganza (MS and Lenovo), many system components have now changed, inter alia the Synaptics driver which I rather suspect of being responsible for the clicky fiasco. I cannot figure out whether the sudden confusion over what the mouse buttons should do was addressed in 19.3.4.99. If not, you may wonna reflect on this problem as well.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Forgive me for cross-posting, but quite a while ago I asked this on the ThinkVantage Technologies board here and have only gotten "Me Too" adds to the thread. I'm hoping ths board and its moderators may be more responsive. I have the latest Synaptics driver V.16.2.5.0 dated 7/5/2012, installed via System Update on a T520 running Win 7 Pro 64 bit. I prefer to disable the TouchPad and only use the TrackPoint. No matter where I disble the TouchPad, either in the context menu of the notification icon or in the Control Panel Applet, the TouchPad  is always re-enabled on a clean start or re-start. I have manually uninstalled the driver and re-installed the driver to no avail. Since others are having this problem, I was wondering if a fix is in the works.

Answer:Synaptics TrackPoint Driver Does not remember settings.

Yeah I'm having that too with the same driver but on T420s with Win7 64bit Pro also.Fully update etc.

I found a software bug for synaptics driver.  I am using the latest: 18.0.7.40, 5/26/2014, windows 8.1. The bug is related to unreliable middle clicking (not to be confused with TpScroll ), when the user middle clicks on the trackpoint, the OS doesn't register it.  It is possible this is a settings issue, maybe it's a "feature".  If so, can someone provide instructions on how to change it. It seems the synaptics firmware will only pass a middle click to OS if the pointer moves at the same time.  I have not tried this on Linux. To reproduce errant behavior I (this will NOT register a middle click)1. make sure middle clicks are enabled in the mouse properties and TpScroll is off2. make sure you have an application that works with middle click or displays L/M/R click state received by the OS (I am using X-Mouse button control)3. with finger clear of trackpoint, middle click with thumb4. Enabled reverse scrolling for the touchpad in the Synaptics setting, but it only works on some apps. Seems mainly to work on 3rd party applications (ex. Chrome), whereas most system windows and similar still scroll unreversed. Highly annoying when your scroll constantly goes different directions Can't find any other setting to adjust this. Seems like the Synaptics driver took over the more detailed settings you usually see in Windows 10. But didn't fully take over.

For the longest time I thought the erratic clicking on my W530 was because of my peeled trackpad sticker, but I only figured out today that it was occurring because I had enabled Press to Click on my trackpoint. It causes unwarranted, extremely rapid clicking, almost competing with autoclicking scripts, and renders the trackpoint immobile while the clicking occurs. This is on a keyboard given to me very recently (~2 months ago) as a replacement on request by IBM ESC.I use the trackpoint extremely frequently; almost all of the mouse movement I require is performed on it in comparison to the trackpad, so perhaps there had been some wear on it after all that time.

Hello, I updated my OS to Windows 10. Everything works perfectly except of trackpoint/touchpad. The first issue is really a critical one - trackpoint buttons are practically useless. Single button click causes the mouse click event multiple times - for example opens 6 new cards in a web browser instead of one. I've found another post here describing in detail exactly the same problem but the author didn't get any response, neither from HP nor the community: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/HP-Elitebook-8570w-built-in-mou... The driver delivered with Windows (which is also listed as compatible with Windows 10 on HP's 8570w support site http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?sp4ts.oid=5257503&swItemId=ob_152050_1&swEnvOid=419... version 19.0.12.0, causes the problems I mentioned earlier. The updated one from Synaptics website (19.0.19.1) additionaly prevents the OS from detecting the middle button... Additionally, the only gestures I can use are the basic ones - no advanced 3- or 4-finger ones (please don't tell me that the hardware is incompatible because similar gestures worked on Windows 8.1 I used earlier). I have a dual boot with Win10 and Linux and on Linux everything works flawlessly, so it's definitely not a hardware problem What should I do to make my touchpad and trackpoint fully functional?

Okay so i've been struggling to find a fix to this and Lenovo support hasn't really been too useful either. Basically the trackpoint is having issues working even with the newest bios, etc. and synaptics driver. It also is having problems with the old driver too?? Could it be in conflict with the new bios update? Lenovo Support gave me the advice to reformatte as it is a "software" issue and to repeat the same above process. Yet the problem still persists.  What steps should I try next?  Lenovo support seems reluctant to give me a hardware exchange Thanks in advance, any advice is open to testing! I'm just fed up with new drivers having bugs like this.

Last night (4/6/2017) an automatic Windows update just now decided to install the most recent Synaptics driver (titled Synaptics - Mouse - 1/11/2017 12:00:00 AM - 19.3.4.66), which apparently is nearly 3 months old at this point.  One thing this update seems to have fixed is an issue I?ve been having with my ThinkPads for upwards of 7 years ? randomly it resets my mouse wheel 'number of lines scrolled per notch' option back to 1 (I prefer 3) pretty much daily, which is a HUGE annoyance, so I?m very grateful for this update and I?d like to keep it. However, it also completely disabled middle click scrolling with my TrackPoint (yes, I have ?Use for scrolling? checked under the TrackPoint settings).  The middle button does nothing now, unless I check ?Use as middle click?.  Rolling back the Synaptics driver to the previous one fixes this issue. Confoundingly, the TrackPoint scrolling with my ThinkPad Bluetooth keyboard still works fine. Has anyone else experienced this problem?  Any ideas how to re-enable TrackPoint scrolling on this newest driver? System details:ThinkPad P50 ? I just rebuilt a R40 for a friend using an XP Professional SP3 CD.Once I had XP installed and the security updates loaded I installed the Lenovo System Update and got the drivers installed through that method.  It installed the current version of the UltraNav driver V14.0.18.0, but something screwy is going on. Sometimes during boot up the cursor will start hopping horizontally to the right edge of the screen.Trying to "force" it back doesn't work well as it keeps trying to "hop" off the right side of the screen. Also the UltraNav icon does not always show up on the taskbar even though I have it turned on. It does this (but not all of the time) either with or without a USB mouse installed. Just now it was behaving properly and I was using the USB mouse to change settings within the UltraNav control panel. I changed one of the settings and the cursor went into "stupid" mode right away and hopped off the right side of the screen. I now have it set so that the touchpad IS enabled and the trackpoint is DISabled. If I check the box to enable the trackpont the cursor immediately starts to hop off the right side of the screen and can not be controlled. I have to use the keyboard to turn off the trackpoint function and regain cursor control. Have I got bad hardware here or .... driver issues....Again the cursor "hops" off the screen in about 1/2" increments and is not drifting "smoothly" off-screen.... Thanks for any help!Jim

Answer:cursor / mouse hops horizontally across screen to the right - erratic w/ trackpoint enabled

Hi Jim,I suggest downloading and booting from a Live CD of any linux distro, if the curser also hops in linux then it definitely would be hardware issue.I also recommend running lenovo PC Doctor's diagnostic test on the keyboard.Hope it helps.

Today I used ThinkVantage Update to download system updates from Lenovo.Optional updates included "Synaptics UltraNav Driver for WinXP and Win7- WW-" version 15.2.14.0which was downloaded and installed. Now the trackpoint icon in the notification area is gone.Clicking on the Mouse section in the Control Panel brings up an error window:"Synaptics Pointing DeviceUnable to connect to Synaptics Pointing Device Driver. If you have installed another PS/2 Pointing Device Driver pleaseuninstall the Synaptics driver by clicking on the Yes button. You thenneed to reinstall your pointing device driver for your external device again.Do you want to uninstall the Synaptics driver now?Yes / No"Clicking on No takes me to the usual looking Mouse Properties window, with 5 tabs including "Pointer Options".Clicking on that produces the normal Motion, Snap-to and Visibility subwindows. But the Trackpoint tab is now gone. The trackpoint still works fine and the trackpad is now on and also works.(Before all this happened, I had the trackpad turned off.)Why has this happened? How can I get the trackpoint icon back in the Notification Area? How can I get control back over the trackpoint motion, whether or not the trackpad is operational, middle button scrolling etc?Anyone got any ideas?

For a while now, I have wondered why the virtual buttons shown in the utility http://imgur.com/Lljj1Z7 don?t function as advertised. According to the utility, I should get a left click if I depress the left are of the touchpad, a middle click if I push on the bumps, and a right click if I depress the right half of the touchpad. In my experience, I get a left click regardless of where I depress the touchpad. The only exception is when I depress the bumps in the top middle of the touchpad?when I do that, the mouse enters some weird scrolly mode where I scan scroll stuff with the trackpoint. It definitely does not emit a middle click. But, more importantly, I cannot figure out how to get trackpoint mode to emit a right click. How do I get trackpoint classic mode to work? Is there a way to downgrade the drive or use a non-lenovo branded driver to get it to behave properly? Right now, I?m relying on an external mouse just to middle click and right click. I?m using Windows 10 b10240 and, as in the post?s title, my trackpoint driver is the latest listed on Lenovo?s support site (which I think WU actually installed for me)?19.0.12.61. Why don?t the virtual buttons work and are there any other workarounds that don?t involve using a mode other than Trackpoint Classic?

Answer:T540p unable to right-click with virtual buttons in trackpoint or trackpoint classic mode 19.0.12.61

Seems to have partially fixed iteslf since Windows Update (WU) installed 19.0.16. Now the right half of my touchpad performs a right click when in TrackPad Classic mode. However, the supposed ?middle click? zone still does a weird scrolly mode instead of sending a middle click. Guess I still have to use an external mouse to accomplish a middle click when using Classic TrackPoint mode, but at least the situtaion is better than when I couldn?t right click with this mode.

Hi, I got an S230u Twist last autumn and have been really happy with it. At the time, I ordered a set of replacement rubber TrackPoint caps. When I replaced the original cap the other day, I realised that the replacement ones are about 0.5mm shorter than the original one, with the result that the H and G keys get caught on the edge of the cap; you have to hit them quite hard to get them to work. I compared all the new caps from the packet against the original one, and sure enough; they're all a little too short. They fit, but it's annoying to have to go back and make sure all my ""G"s and "H"s typed correctly.  Has anyone else had the same problem? Lenovo, could this just have been a bad batch, and if so can I return the unused ones for a replacement set that is the correct height?

Answer:S230u - replacement trackpoint TrackPoint caps are too short

If you bought them from Lenovo I'd just try and return them. If not dispute on eBay/PayPal/Credit Card. But never use poor quality TrackPoint Caps. Remember if a computer is running efficiently so is the person behind it generally.

I am running Windows 10 on an Acer and recently downloaded and installed the update for the Synaptic touchpad (January 17, 2017).  After rebooting my laptop, I can use the touch pad to move the cursor when logging in, but once the system as loaded,
I cannot move the cursor using the touch pad.  I can left-click and right-click, and shrink and expand on the touch pad, but have no control over the cursor.  I currently have a mouse attached to the computer in order to move the cursor.
When I click on the link for more information about the update, there currently is no information.  Quite frustrating.
Please advise as how to resolve this issue.
Thank you.

Hi, I wonder whether there is a way to enable press-to-click for the trackpoint on the new x1? In the respective settings there is no such options and I searched everywhere, somebody found it? Next question: In order to avoid the annoying noise of the clickpad everytime you press it, I would like to use the tap function of the touchpad while using the trackpoint to move the cursor. Unfortunately, tapping on the pad seems to be disabled during use of trackpoint - any smart hack to get this workig? Thanks to all,J

Question: Trackpoint cap

I'm not sure if this is the place I'm supposed to post this. I absolutely hate the trackpoint when I type.  I type quite fast and I hit the trackpoint every once in a while -- but this is enough to really get on my nerves.  It's absolutely distracting.  Imagine typing out your thoughts then all of a sudden you hit the thing, get distracted, then irritated, and your thoughts gone.  ThinkPads are supposed to help you think.  The trackpoint unfortunately doesnt...  Are there a replacement tips that's depressed enough (and maybe colored black...) so that I dont hit it accidentally when I type?  Removing the tip works fine -- but it looks so ugly without it (makes it look like i'm using a broken equipment). Oh and I dont mind if the replacement cap will render the trackpoint unusable.  I just need it low enough so I dont accidentally hit it.

these are the three different types of trackpoint caps. You might get lucky with the first type and there is no black trackpoint caps produced by Lenovo.

You can disable the trackpoint by pressing Fn + F8 in windows and then select trackpad only. You can also disable trackpoint from BIOS menu.

Question: Trackpoint gone...

I did the usual "Windows update" this morning. After the installation had completed I noticed that my Trackpoint has "disappeared"! There is no reaction whatsoever when pressing the red dot and I can't control the mouse with it any more. I then checked in the control panel (no trace) and then had to learn, that it doesn't even exist in the device manager, either. I then rebooted, no change. I then even powered off and reboot from power off again, still no trackpoint! And after I downloaded the trackpoint driver from the Lenovo drivers download site and wanted to (re-)install the driver, I got an error message "this driver can not be installed on non-trackpoint systems". ?!? What? What the %@[email protected]#*%?  Where has my trackpoint gone??? How come, that it has completely disappeared? How do I get this thing working again? Edited: I later noticed, that a part of that Windows Update apparently was a new "Wacom Two Finger Touch" driver. Might that have to do with my disappeared Trackpoint? Michael PS.: Boy - is this annoying to have to work without Trackpoint!

Answer:Trackpoint gone...

I just had to learn that there is a Fn-key (F8) that allows to enable/disable Trackpoint and Touchpad. I must have accidentally operated that button without noticing (in fact, I hadn't even known before that there IS such an option...).Its setting was on "Touchpad only". After re-enabling the trackpoint there everything came back to normal. Wheew. What a relieve! :-) And it (most probably) had nothing to do with the Windows Update - just an unlucky conincidence! Michael

Is there any way to use the trackpoint on Lenovo computers as a joystick?  I.e. a device that would be useful for a flight simulator?  Essentially, it wouldn't be moving the mouse along a line based on the direction you're pushing it in with a speed based on your finger pressure,  but rather moving the mouse to a stationary position on the screen based on the direction and pressure you're pushing on it with.

Answer:Using the trackpoint as a joystick?

After just a few months of usage, my W510's TrackPoint cap came loose. I ordered a three-part TrackPoint cap collection on eBay. Alas, the caps don't fit.

No surprise if you look at this photo of a non-W-series keyboard with the cap removed. The TrackPoint post in my W-series ThinkPad is yellow rather than black and significantly smaller:

Link to picture

Also, the W-series is prominently absent from the list of supported models in Lenovo's specs of the replacement caps.

Anyone know if replacement caps for the W-series are available?

Also, how would I attach the cap? Just pushing it back didn't really do it for my original cap, it kept coming loose.

Question: Choppy Trackpoint

Hello, Got x120e the other day and I have one question: This is my first Thinkpad (and first time witha trackpoint) - the trackpoint moves kind of choppy. It's not smooth movements like with the trackpad, as if it's missing frames or something. It's still perfectly useable but seems odd. Is this normal?

Answer:Choppy Trackpoint

No, it's not normal.  Mine moves as smooth as the touchpad (if not smoother) and responds to how much I move the stick.  Have you looked into the UltraNav Properties field of the trackpoint?  I'll leave this up to the experts to help you here.  This is my first Lenovo product too. But I'll like to comment that I wish the trackpoint would be at positions where your fingers will be while holding the machine.  The middle position works fine for a bigger laptop, but this is an ultraportable. Remember the IBM PalmTopPC110?  http://www.komotch2.com/tps/pt110.htm And the Toshiba Libretto:  http://www.silverace.com/libretto/libretto100j.jpg Some models' trackpoints are even located at behind the screen (i.e. on the lid).PalmTopPC110

If I take out the red cap, there is a black thing as shown in second image located on key "G."  I try to jam it into the fixture, but did not work out.Should this black thing need to always stay in the fixture? Is it just be glued to the fixture?Should I ask Lenovo for a service? Thanks for your help.

Answer:Is my trackpoint broken?

The images don't work, however, I think I understand.  The Trackpoint is a red rubber cap that just fits on a black plastic post between the G, H, and B keys.  It lifts right off of the black plastic post.  The post is a permanent part of the keyboard.  The "eraser" head is user replaceable when necessary. The underside of the Trackpoint "eraser" is hollowed out to fit over the black post.  It is snug, but does not require "jamming."  When in place, does it work?

Answer:Trackpoint Drifting after let go

yeah i have that problem, and i have a friend with the same problem. its just because the rubber doesnt stay seated right on the piece is sitting on, if you push on it too hard. thats my guess, but i could be wrong. i notice if i dont push on the rubber part very hard it keeps that from happening. for some reason i always push straight down on the rubber piece and thats when it does it the most.

I have a T60 laptop (purchased Jun 2006) which works great except for the trackpoint.  For the last few months, the trackpoint has not been working.  The touchpad works. Here are the steps I took to troubleshoot - 1.  Updated Ultra NAV driver and Utility software (the latest from lenovo website).  Actually un-installed old version and      re-installed new version2.  Updated the BIOS to the newer version and ensured that Trackpoint/NAV is set to enabled in BIOS3.  Replaced the keyboard (assumed it was a hardware problem).  During replacement, I made sure it was properly      seated to rule out a loose connection.4.  The motherboard was replaced last year (due to a another problem) so I assume it may not be the source of problem I have searched this and other websites but am out of luck.  Appreciate if any one can provide more leads/ideas to fix this.  I am not sure if this is software related. Thanks

Answer:Please help - Trackpoint not operational

how about the mouse properties is it enabled there

Question: Trackpoint Issues

Hi, Just recently my trackpoint in my T61 stopped responding after having a little water in my keyboard near the left function and shift keys.  Attempting to fix the problem, I went to the mouse settings to make sure it was enabled, however the Trackpoint section was grayed out and the enabled box was unchecked. I also checked the BIOS settings and both the Trackpoint and touch pad are set to automatic. I have also uninstalled and reinstalled the Ultranav driver and utility. Is there anything else I should do to fix the problem? The amount of water that got into the keyboard did not look like it was much and evaporated pretty quickly, so I am not sure if this is just a coincidence or it is related to the water being in the keyboard.  I also tried tried the Trackpoint with a Ubuntu Live CD, but it did not work in Ubuntu either. Thanks

OK, T60 Notebook and suddenly the TrackPoint and TouchPad stopped working.  I checked under the ThinkVantage tools and they are enabled.  I checked in the BIOS and the device(s) are enabled there as well.  I've had a TouchPad go bad before but the TrackPoint still worked.  Kinda strange both would go down at the same time.  So, in short: 1.  Has anyone out there experienced this and if so, how did you fix it?2.  Does anyone have the part number for a replacement TouchPad (I've searched the site and could find dang near everything else, but the TouchPad) TIA!

Answer:TouchPad and TrackPoint

They're integrated parts of the palm rest. A cable connects all integrated parts of the palm rest to the machine. So I guess the cable isn't plugged in firmly enough. Remove the palm rest according to the hardware manual and check. If the cable has no problem, contact Lenovo to ask for a replacement palm rest.

For the past week or two it seems that the mouse clicks on its own on my T420. This is in TrackPoint only mode (TouchPad disabled) with press to select disabled. This issue is reproducible as it generally happens right after a normal click or unclick. For example, if I highlight text in a word processor by clicking and dragging my cursor over the text when I release the button the system registers a phantom click within the next second or so. I also have noticed these phantom clicks after middle clickling. Does this sound like a possible driver issue or should I go ahead and call to have a tech come out and replace parts?

Answer:TrackPoint clicks on its own

@nibs,Try uninstalling UltraNav, reboot the laptop then install it back and see if it helps. If problem persist then I guess its time to contact the techs.

I'm using a Lenovo T61-8890 A24. It's a pretty old model but has been upgraded to be able to support Win 7 Ultimate 32bit.

I currently am facing a similar issue. In the BIOS, both my trackpoint and touchpad is detected and set to Automatic.
If I remove the entire palm rest and touchpad panel, I'm able to get the trackpoint to work, however once the touchpad is connected, the trackpoint just stops working.

I tried to enable it on the Ultranav program but it just doesn't work.

I tried the mouse properties and the trackpoint function is greyed out as shown below.

Link to image 1

When I went into the device manager, the trackpoint is not detected.

Link to image 2

I tried installing all versions of Ultranav, tried BIOS updates, tried cleaning the connectors, and still can't get the trackpoint to work together with the touchpad.

Any advice to this issue is greatly appreciated.

Answer:T61 - can't enable TrackPoint

Hi Dyna, Welcome to the forum. When you say Trackpoint doesn't work, do you mean:1. That trackpoint itself is not workingor 2. The left click, right click and scroll buttons associated with the trackpoint doesn't work. ========Also, you did not mention whether your trackpad works or not. Finally, what happens when you disable the trackpad in the BIOS menu? Does that affect your trackpoint and associated buttons' behaviours?

Just couple days ago, my TrackPoint started to get weird. It started to move extremely fast on certain direction, and even I set to the lowest sensitivity, it still move extremely fast. Basically I have no control of the track point anymore. I tried to plug in a notebook mouse with trackpoint turned on, I still can't move my mouse. I have to disable the trackpoint. I even tried to replace the red cap but still no use. Does anyone have this problem and know how to fix this? Thanks.

Answer:Is trackpoint durable ?

Hi beickus,It is in my standpoint but you don't have to push it hard to test it's limits, play it gently and use soft hands to use it. A simple touch works best, you don't really have to rest your finger on it. Hope it helps.

Question: Trackpoint problem

First of all, sorry if this questions been asked and answered. I've been searching off an on for several weeks for any online help to a trackpoint annoyance I've been having with no luck. I'm on a T61p running XP. (I upgraded the stock Vista, following an online guide). I have the Ultranav utility installed (I can see and change the options for the trackpoint/touchpad in the mouse control panel). Both the trackpoint and touchpad work. However, every once in a while the trackpoint just becomes totally unresponsive and the mouse pointer refuses to respond or move. For like 3-4 seconds. What's odd is that when this happens, the touchpad still works. (I'm trying to move or scroll with the trackpoint / topmost scroll button+trackpoint with now response, but use other finger to test touchpad and that responds.) It's really odd and really annoying. Has anyone had a similar problem? Any advice? Thanks!

Answer:trackpoint loose

When you say the TrackPoint is loose, are you refering to the red cap that covers it?  If so, it's probably just worn out and needs to be replaced.  You can order replacements from Lenovo.  The part number is 73P2698, and here in the US, they're $9.99.  Sometimes they're also available on eBay.

Now that the 5th gen Thinkpad is here, the decline of the trackpoint becomes ever clearer.  Frankly, most of us would not be buying Thinkpads if they didn't have the trackpoint.  That's the X1's main advantage.  But Lenovo keeps making it worse.  First, the trackpoint caps that will fit the gen 4 and 5 come in only one, unpopular, variant and you can't get the soft rim version.  But more importantly, Lenovo keeps on degrading the software control of the trackpoint.  It used to be that you could adjust the sensitivity of the trackpoint, making it more or less stiff.  Even the softest setting was inadequate but it was something.  In the 5gen there is no option to change the stiffness or responsiveness of the trackpoint's movements at all.  Lenovo: hear your customers!! Please make the trackpoint MORE not less adjustable.

Good afternoon all,
We have an older IBM thinkpad 600x, that my husband uses to play simple off line games and read a few emails. The past few days when booting we are getting the error #08611.
From what I have been able to find I believe that this has something to do with the trackpoint.
We use a wireless mouse with this so do not need the track point. Can someone please tell me how to disable the trackpoint?
Thanks!!!
I wish a Happy & prosperous 2010 to all.

Question: x230 trackpoint

Hey,sometimes when I move my pointer somwhere and then release trackpoint the pointer goes a little bit backwards. Can it be fixed?Regards

Answer:x230 trackpoint

TrackPoint drift has been happening as long as I can remember, at least back to the X31.  Release the trackpoint, and it may drift towards the top left.  If you let it drift, it stops after a few seconds and after that works properly.  At least for me this happens infrequently enough so as not to be a big deal.

E420S, Cannot get either to work. Cannot enable trackpoint or touchpad in UltraNav.

Answer:Trackpoint and Touchpad

Hi, ezedoh

The first thing I would recommend is the removal of the UltraNav driver from the system. This is best accomplished by using an external mouse to navigate the system. To uninstall the UltraNav driver, open the Start menu and type Device Managerinto the Search box, and then press Enter. Once here, double click on Mouse and other pointing devices, and then right-click on the UltraNav device. Naviage to the Driver tab and select Uninstall... from the bottom of the window. Follow the prompts to uninstall and then restart when prompted by Windows. Windows should install a generic driver for controlling the mouse. This should reinstate the touchpad to working order. If not, then continue using an external mouse for now.

Once the UltraNav driver has been removed, I would recommend trying to use the standard Synaptics driver found here. Synaptics is the company that develops the UltraNav software, so there should be no loss of compatibility/features. I have witnessed several cases where this driver has helped others with mouse issues, so it may help yours as well.

Hope it helps,
Adam

Answer:trackpoint did't work

Hi Oshri,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per the query we understood that you are facing issue with track point not working in your Lenovo T410 laptop
The Fn-key (F8) allows the to enable/disable Trackpoint and Touchpad.

If the trackpoint is no longer working, this may be a good option to check before investigating device manager, updating / reinstalling trackpoint drivers or rebooting as discussed above.

Pressing Fn-F8 brings up the ultranav menu and allows the user to cycle through different trackpoint and touchpad configuration options.

Hope this helps. Do post back if issue persists!

Best regards,

Question: Choppy Trackpoint

I know I just posted a thread, but I figured that issue is global enough to warranty its own. But this one seems to be specific to me.I'm a new Thinkpad (and trackpoint) user, and the trackpoint is very choppy for me. It seems to skip frames. For example, making a circular motion with the trackpad results in a continuous, smooth motion. But not so with the trackpoint. It seems to be micro-jumping (or skipping frames as I prefer to call it). This is easily noticeable when holding down the middle trackpoint button and attempting to scroll a page. The page does not scroll smoothly at all (has nothing to do with smooth scrolling, that's something else and not what I'm talking about). Now this isn't just with this X220. Before the X220 I briefly owned a x120e that had this EXACT same problem. I asked about it and people told me that is not normal. So I returned it and got this X220, but it's the same problem. The weird thing is that while this choppiness is present in Windows, it was just fine during the Windows install process. I've tried: disabling the trackpad, reducing/increasing trapoint sensetivity, updating drivers, removing drivers and reinstalling, bumping the priority of the driver to high. None helped. What are the chances I'd receive two machines with the same problem?

Answer:Choppy Trackpoint

Disabling the trackpad from the BIOS fixed the issue it seems (its definitely much smoother). Diasbling it within Windows did not help. If I recall correctly disabling the trackpad in the x120e from the BIOS was not an option. Too bad. But odd that others do not have this problem. Oh and my palm was not resting on the trackpad

Question: Low, erratic FPS

Hi guys. Have posted here previously about hardware - i was building a new PC. I'm having some problems running WoW on it though. I have posted on the WoW support forums, but as is the standard process, they've asked me for my driver info and then ignored me. So I've come here!

Yesterday evening, I started having some strange stuttering slowdown. Every 2-5 seconds, I'll get a bit of slowdown for half a second, then I'm back running smooth again.

Previously, Warcraft would run at 60 FPS at (almost) all times, in busy cities, in raids, whatever. But after a few hours of playing yesterday, I suddenly started experiencing these low framerate spikes. It runs smooth for a few seconds, then it stutters, and then smooth, then a stutter.

I have tried:
Running with 0 addons (in-game custom UI stuff),
Fullscreen and windowed,
Lowest graphics settings,
Spyware scan (which brought up quite a lot actually - but it's clean now),
Virus scan,
Defrag (fairly new drive, so i'm at 0% fragmented, it says),
Allowing the launcher to fully patch (it now says up to date - there's a sort of streaming patch process),
Closing all processes and switching off fancy Win7 themes (my tray has my graphics utility, sound utility, mobo utility, and Microsoft's AV - nothing else).
Updating graphics drivers.

It's particularly noticeable if I try and run around somewhere quite complex, like the cities or forests. Then it's a pretty constant 10-20... Read more

I have synaptics 19.0.12.98 and the touchpad is working so bad it makes me cry. The three finger tap only works when the fingers are in a straight horizontal line. 4 finger tap performs the 3 finger tap operation. Multi finger gesture (2 finger scroll, zoom, 2\3 finger tap) randomly stops working. After doing some tests, this is definitely a software problem. Fix if!

Hi all, I'm having some issues with TrackPoint in my X240.I am using 'trackpoint only' mode (not classic.. mode becaues it disables gestures - which are quite usefull btw) Problem is, that sometimes clickpad have problems with left click recognition. It is really annoying, I have to click few times to actually click.I think it is worse after last software updates (lenovo ultra nav) Does anyone have this issue too?  Maybe Lenovo can add 3 physical buttons to my X240?

Yes. This issue comes with the latest driver, see: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/X1-Carbon-Gen2-Using-TrackPad-for-TrackPoint-b... You are not the only one. Revert back to 18.0.7.34 - works much better. (http://drivers.softpedia.com/progDownload/Lenovo-ThinkPad-T440-Synaptics-UltraNav-Driver-180734-Down...

Hi,   I bought an X61 (type: 7673-BE9) last month. Now I have met a trackpoint issue. It will not work at any time: no response to left and right buttons, no response to the red stick. If I reboot the system, it maybe works or doesn't. In the later case,  I noticed that there was a yellow exclamation mark before trackpoint in the hardware management.   I have tried to reinstall the trackpoint driver(4.62), but it was helpless. Here's my system information:    OS:    Windows XP sp2    BIOS: 2.07    Trackpoint Driver Version: 4.62   Would anyone please help me? Thanks a lot.                                Best Regards                                  Thiross

Answer:X61 trackpoint doesn't work

Hi, Im experiencing exactly the same Problems on my X61. I was using Windows Vista for three month and had no problems at all. The strange mouse behaviour just started after installing Windows XP. The funny thing is that the mouse stops working some seconds after the GUI boot. So i tried to kill all of the trackpoint tasks running, but I didnt find any task being responsible for this behaviour. My next try will be to stop some drivers and see if I can find the problem here.Did you find any other solution?Best regards, dkirsten

Recently I've been having an issue with both my trackpoint and touchpad. sometimes one works and other times the other works. from time to time they both work. it seems to switch when i pull up a new website or open a program. if one works before i open the program then the other will work after i open it. the buttons are the same way as well.. if one set works then the other doesn't but they don't correspond to which pointing device is working.. its kind of random.

Answer:Trackpoint & Touchpad problem

I have just starting having the same problems as well.  It's driving me nuts.  I thought my laptop was crapping out.  Anyone have any ideas what's going on?  I also had the trackpoint touchpad go south on a HP N6400, though in all cases, the Synaptic driver thinks everything is hunkydorey.  I've updated drivers, tried everything.   Whole reason I have a Lenovo is for the trackpoint and if it's going to stop working, then will start looking at a new laptop.

Over the week, the trackpoint cap on my ThinkPad X131e just popped off, I've been unable to fit it back on properly. Even if it does seem to fit, it's not as responsive as it was. It's stiffer than before, even on the sensitive settings set to max. Whoops.

Answer:Trackpoint stopped working

Solved.  Found usable replies when I did a search using the correct spelling of "trackpoint" in this forum.  By pressing the ThinkVantage button and then checking input devices, I found the trackpoint to be disabled. Need to change it in the BIOS at startup.

Hi there, I've been using a T400 for around a year now. Previously, I could move the trackpoint and the touchpad at the same time (left hand on the trackpoint and right hand on the touchpad). I reformated, installed the drivers for both, and now if I am using the trackpoint and try to move the touchpad at the same time, there is about a 2 second delay before I get any movement from the touchpad. Any ideas? It is a really big annoyance because even if I am using the track point and stop moving it, and then immediately try and move the touchpad there is still a second where no movement happens, and I have to lift my finger and put it back down on the touchpad before the cursor moves. Thanks,-Ben

Answer:Using Touchpad and Trackpoint simultaneously.

I use the trackpoint and usually have both pad and trackpoint turned on.  Normally, i would have my palm resting on the pad while using the trackpoint.  If the pad reacted to my touch while i'm using the trackpoint, it would be quite annoying because the mouse would move unintentionally.  having approx 1-2 sec delay fixes the problem of unintentional movement.   So I thought it was supposed to work that way...

Hello, I have been experiencing this issue for quite a long time. Initially I thought it was due to an update for Windows XP, but I couldn't find any message on the logs when the laptop hangs. I re-installed XP several times to discard any software-related incompatibility, but even with a fresh install it was happening. I recently realized after several tests that the problem occurred more frequently when moving the mouse (trackpoint or touchpad) right after system boot (either cold boot or boot from hibernation). What I found out is that it will no longer happen if I suspend the laptop after the system has started, not touching the mouse. The symptoms are that Windows freezes. No HD activity at all, system doesn't respond to any mouse/keyboard input. If I close the laptop cover the system doesn't hibernate. The only way to resume normal operation is pressing the power off button for a few seconds, so the system turns off, then turn on normally. All drivers are up to date. Has anyone experience this issue? Thanks

My couple week old T400 is having some TrackPoint issues. The cursor doesn't jump, I've checked all my settings, and the touchpad is off. What is does do is when I navigate upwards, sometimes the cursor will slowly move downwards on the screen without me touching it, for at least 2 full seconds. It moves slowly, not quickly, sort of like the Trackpoint not resetting to its neutral position. Does anyone else have issues where the cursor using the trackpoint doesn't completely stop moving? Even sometimes when trying to navigate to click a point on the screen, the cursor will push itself downward, so I end up having to exert even more pressure to get it to move in the opposite direction I want to go. Sorry if this isn't a good explanation of my issue, it's a bit hard to explain. Again, the touchpad is off and the click feature for the TrackPoint is also off. Thanks in advance for any suggestions (hopefully solutions!)!Message Edited by song510 on 06-16-2009 09:40 AM

song510 wrote: Does anyone else have issues where the cursor using the trackpoint doesn't completely stop moving?  Yes, most everyone has this problem if they rest their finger on the Trackpoint when they're not using it.  The solution is to take your finger off the Trackpoint unless you're moving it.

I am having some trouble with the trackpoint of my E560, and would like to know if it is possible to disable the trackpoint without disabling the trackpoint buttons (above the trackpad).Whenever I have the trackpoint enabled the cursor will start drifting and the trackpad will respond badly to input. However, when I disable the trackpoint the trackpoint buttons are also disabled, which I use frequently.Tech support sent me a new keyboard, but this didn't fix the issue and I cannot afford to lose my laptop for a week for repair at the moment. Support told me there is a option to disable the trackpoit in the BIOS, which does not seem to be there even though I updated the BIOS. Is there a way to disable the trackpoint without disabling the buttons? Or a way to repair without losig my laptop for a prolonged time? This is a DOA issue, and not the only issue i've been having with this laptop. Really expected better quality from a Thinkpad especially on the driver level.Been having trouble with the mouse and video driver since day one. Even on a clean install.

I suddenly find that both the trackpoint and touchpad are not functioning. they are set to Automatic in the BIOS but the UltraNav shows them grayed out.History:I had recently installed the system update "systemupdate314-2008-5-15.exe" when I had this problem (the key board also had stopped responding). The problem persisted but got rectified after a few restarts. But it now recurs again (though the keyboard is fine now). I also had recently removed the palmrest and tightened the touchpad connection when it had stopped working. It was fine till recently. Can you please suggest a remedy..

Been bumbling along quite happily with my ThinkPad 600/2645/45U running on 98SE for quite a while. It's my in-car system.Only a slight niggle. With the trackpoint device, there are three buttons to represent the three mouse buttons. I would like to configure the (currently non-functioning) third button to be the 'double-click' button. However, search as I may, I cannot find a meaningful driver that will allow me to do this. I have found (I hope) a 'contact' facility to ask IBM, but I'm not 100% certain that I found the right one or that I will get a reply.Has any nice person out there had the same 'problem' and found a driver?Chris

I had an X201 and last year upgraded to the x240. Along with the loss of the physical trackpoint buttons, lenovo also drastically changed the trackpoint hardware. The trackpoint height was shortened, the overall sensitivity/acceleration was drastically reduced, and the "press-to-select" functionality was removed. Does anyone know if those issues have also been addressed in the new x250? That is, is this basically the old (better) trackpoint that was used in prevoius models (e.g., the x201), or is it the same (**bleep**ty) trackpoint as in the x240, just with physical buttons.  Thanks,Chris

Answer:x250 Trackpoint Question

Also, I tried to ask this question in a sales chat, and got the response "the trackpad functionality has been designed to reproduce that of older models."   I said I wasn't interested in the trackpad, just the trackpoint, and asked explicitly whether I could register a mouse click by pressing the trackpoint.  That caused the rep (or bot) to disconnect... after two full minutes of waiting I was requed for a new rep.  Thanks Lenovo for that great customer service experience.

T40 Details:2373-92U I've been having this problem with my trackpoint and ultranav mice for quite some time - it seems that only the left button generates any response by the OS, and that response is most often a "right click."  The actual right button is unresponsive.  I've tried the option under "control panel -> mouse -> button configuration -> switch primary and secondary buttons"  whether checked or unchecked, the left button still has the same behavior.  Occasionally, the left button will stop working entirely within a window - apparently the best way to resolve this is to use the left button to click anywhere on the desktop: the context menu appears, and after using the left button to click on any item within the context window the left button will once again become responsive in all windows (although it will still act like the right button when clicking). External USB mice and Bluetooth mice do not have this problem - those mice respond properly to left/right clicks. My best guess is that the keyboard unit (08k4957 or 08k4986) needs to be replaced, however I'm hoping there's a more definitive test I can perform before shelling out the $$ for a new keyboard unit.  I say this because the ultranav mousepad also has the same problem and I see it plugs into a separate location within the laptop - is there another common component within the laptop that could cause common failure between the two built-in mice? Thank... I have an IBM T40 laptop. I have been having problems with the mouse properties. I opened up the advanced properties for the mouse and selected the UltraNav tab. I keep selecting the "Standard Scroll" option but it never stays. It keeps doing the smooth scrolling. For some reason, after my laptop has been on for a while, I can get the standard scroll option to stay. But then after a while longer it reverts back by itself. It usually happens when something disrupts my wireless internet connection. I have downloaded all the latest drivers that I could find from the IBM website. What is messing this up?

Looking for a new notebook. Cannot easily tell from the usual descriptions which have a trackpoint pointing device. A list of models or model families would be very helpful. Thanks: Leon

Answer:Which new notebook models have trackpoint?

I am not sure any HP laptops still have a trackpoint. All Lenovo Thinkpads still have them. There is virtually no consumer demand for trackpoints, a huge majority prefers the touchpad. I still use the trackpoint on my Thinkpad, but also use the touchpad.

I had recently done an update using ThinkVantage. It changed the behavior of my trackpoint (pressing the middle now doesnt scroll up and down). It does however put a small round picture and it seems to allow me to scroll on any direction EXCEPT in places where the location has a clickable link. This means that the scroll function of the trackpoing cannot be used in windows start menu, etc. The issue though is that when I try hit Fn+F8, then "manage settings" - it says "unable to connect to synaptics pointing driver..." etc. then it asks me if I "...want to uninstall the driver?" Also, in folder view, hitting the center button now drags the file instead of allowing me to scroll - which is an unexpected (i believe incorrect) behavior Is this supposed to happen? My laptop is the T410s, touchscreen.

Hi, not sure where to do this (or if maybe the issues are actually caused by some hardware issue), but I'd like to request an update to the trackpoint speed in the next Ultranav driver release.   I currently have my trackpoint speed cranked all the way up, along with my overall mouse speed, and have turned off pointer precision enhancement (which also slows mouse speed); but still have to work to move the cursor around the screen using the trackpoint.  This also makes it extemely difficult to control the cursor when I connect an external mouse (e.g., when I'm using the laptop at my office workstation). I'd say the speed is only getting up to about 3/4ths of the speed of my X201's trackpoint (if that).  This is not only inconvenient, but also frequently causes the tackpoint to lose its inertia settings so that it starts to drift uncontrollably up (or down) the screen (usually caused by slowly scrolling through a document).  This happens daily.   With this issue and the loss of the press-to-select feature, the trackpoint on the new 240 has been very, very disappointing.  It's a shame that such a useful feature has been so handicapped by the changes in the new machine.  Please bring back the old trackpoint (or fix these issues with software). - Chris

Hey! I have a problem with the following symptoms on a T61 9659 CTO model. - trackpoint randomly stops working during use or after wake up- this issue appears under Windows 7 64 bit and also Ubuntu Linux- there is nothing in the system log- sometimes, after waking up, neither of trackpoint and touchpad are usable and ultranav options are greyed out for both.- A full power cycle is alwas helps (poweroff, cold start) but a reboot or sleep/wake cycle is also helps sometimes)- as far as I notived, this behaviour can happen even if I leave the machine on the desktop alone (no physical impact on the chassis)- during these, keyboard remains operational (despite that they share the flex cable with the trackpoint) So what I think is less likely:- driver issue (2 different OSs, same behaviour)- cable issue (working keyboard, also happens when notebook us untouched) So, what? I saw a lot of topics about this, because this issue showed up on different models (also non-lenovo products are affected) and I really annoyed and want to find out the root cause. Buying a replacement keyboard, new notebook, anything else is not an option. I hope, there are a guy out there with a circuit drawing or something like this, who can help. Yes, I tried to reinstall ultranav driver, etc, blah blah blah. This is an issue, not just a driver bug. Thanks for any help!

Answer:T61 trackpoint stops randomly

Findings so far:- After a BIOS reset and a power management drive update, this issue seems to be solved- Notebook ran for almost 8 hours w/o any problem- After setting power plan to optimize performance and a sleep/wake up cycle, problem appeared again, but gone after switching to other power scheme

Hello,my Thinkpad 600 never failed me(except for having to replace the CMOS battery every 5 years, which seems to be normal for this model)but now the Track Point is "stuck" somehow. I touch it once and then the mouse pointer arrow keeps runningto the left side of the screen. The external USB Mouse works fine, but only when the Track Point is deactivated in Thinkpad configuration. Before, I sometimes had the problem that the arrow kept moving after I had stopped touching the TrackPoint, but it always "calmed down" after a second or so.Does anybody has an idea how to fix this ? Or is it just broken?Thank youNiaUpdate:On the Lenovo troubleshooting pages I found the following explanation"The TrackPoint does automatic compensations to adjust the pointer sensor. During this process, the pointer moves on the screen automatically for a short time. This self-acting pointer movement can occur when a slight, steady pressure is applied to the TrackPoint pointer while the computer is powered on or while the system is running, or when readjustment is required because the temperature has exceeded its normal temperature range. This symptom does not indicate a hardware problem. No service actions are necessary if the pointer movement stops in a short period of time."Well, I am a little confused by this. So the TrackPoint does some kind of self-calibration? And what do I do if themovement doesn't stop? Maybe should I install a new TrackPoint driver version? Please, can somebody help me a little...... Read more

Answer:thinkpad 600, trackpoint malfunctioning

Welcome to the forum! Yes, TrackPoint is supposed to self-calibrate and move occasionally, but is also supposed to stop doing that after a few seconds. Quite a few people have reported this issue with 600 series in the past, and there is no known cure (apart from using an external mouse) that I'm aware of. It' s supposedly a glitch that develops on the main board. Try updating your BIOS and drivers from the "support and downloads" section of Lenovo's website. Good luck.
