Preferred Solution: Windows 10 files/loders select all need help !!!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, could you please actually state what the problem is you're experiencing? I'm probably missing something from your screenshots. Thanks.

If I open a folder and want to either move all files to another folder using click and move or to copy to a DVD, is there a shortcut command that would allow me to select all items instead of having to select them one at a time?

Answer:In Windows Explorer is there a way to select all files in a folder?

I personally like this little option myself.

I noticed this change a month or two ago. When in Photoshop, Dreamweaver, or several other apps, and from within the program I'm trying to open a file or link to one (in Dreamweaver's case), they're now listed by filesize (instead of by name) in the folder. Obviously this makes it hard to find the one I'm looking for.

When I manually select "Arrange Icons by... Name", it re-sorts them but resets every time I'm in the "Select/Open File" dialogue again. Browsing folders through Windows Explorer from My Computer does not have this problem - files are sorted correctly - only in applications does this come up. Have tried setting Sort By Filename as the default, but can't get anything to stick.

Never seen this happen before, and it's getting fairly aggravating as it's a frequent task in my workday. Any ideas what the problem could be?

PS - I should note that this is not the virus-infected computer in my other recent post - that's my laptop. This desktop is totally clean as far as I know, have scanned with multiple programs and aside from this problem there's no unusual behavior.

Thanks in advance...

Answer:Files being listed by filesize (instead of by name) in applications' "Select File" windows

I've seen this phenomenon...and I think it's only with music/graphics/video-editors which I have installed.

I've assumed that chkdsk /r needed to be run on my C: and that's been followed by normal behavior. May not work for you, but no harm in trying it.

My last episode with this was 72 hours ago .

Hi!
First of all that you for you time and help.
Today I found a problem that is getting me crazy.
I can't drag and drop files or select several files at once, my desktop icons can't be moved and I can't move program windows.
I've tried everything possible in the internet:
- The ESC trick
- sfc /scannow
- Bitdefender scan
- Malwarebytes scan
- Superantispyware scan
- Rogue killer scan
- Hitman pro 3 scan
- Fixwin tool
- Windows fixit tools
- Classic shell
- Tweaking Windows repair tool
- Adware cleaner
- and so on...
I can not perform a clean install because here computers are sold without windows DVD...
I can not perform a system restore because it stopped working as well...
Command line was not working but I repair it...
I have no idea what to do anymore... This never happened to me before!
Is it possible that some kind of malware changed this setting in registry? Can I fix this?
Please help me!
Thank you so much...

Answer:Can't drag & drop or select several files. Desktop icons or windows can't be moved

Boot in Safe Mode and see if the problem persists. If so, then perform a Clean Boot and again see if the problem goes away or stays. If it does, then it is some program or startup which is interfering with the smooth functioning of Windows. In the Clean Boot State, try to identify the culprit and disable or remove it.

Try Free Commander as an alternative to Windows Explorer.

Free Commander does just what you're looking for. When you select a group of items, and you sort on a particular column heading or re-sort on a different column, the original selected items remain selected throughout.

Even further, if you select a group of items (e.g. a bunch of new ZIP/RAR files) and then right-click on the group (e.g. to invoke WINRAR from the context menu, to unzip each of the selected group), when the invoked function is completed the selected items will STILL REMAIN SELECTED (e.g. so that you can now DELETE the whole group of ZIP/RAR files you may not need any longer).

Free Commander is a 1-pane/2-pane functional alternative to Windows Explorer, but looks and feels like the "old fashioned" Windows Explorer from WinXP (or even Win98), so you might truly prefer it. It's got lots of additional functionality, and its interface (e.g. toolbar) can be customized as you want.

hi.
I have a number of radio program's on a cd when I play them on my cd/radio box I cannot select individual programs they just play in what seems to be a numerical order and each time I switch off it goes back to the begining playing that ist one again. Is there a solution to this can I organize them to be selective and then re burn them to a fresh blank cd,
regards

Answer:Mp3 files cd will not select.

Make and model of CD/radio box?
These machines don't have memory like a modern car CD player, hence the back to the beginning when switched off, would have thought you could select a track number.

Hi all

Often I have a situation where I need to select a certain subset of files (usually too many to individually select), and these files will be named longer than the majority.. by this I mean suffixed with a number, or a letter etc. (Please see screenshot, note the mouse pointer is not visible but it is located at the bottom left corner of each selection box)

In XP/Win2k I would draw a selection box that touched only the long files, and it would select them. I could easily count them, move them, drag and drop them, delete them, INVERT SELECTION, etc etc

I see no way to do this in Windows 7. I disabled full row select but it does not do what I expected. I can't select only files with a certain name length.

I have attached a picture example. And before anyone says sort by time (as the A.jpg have a earlier time stamp, this is almost never the case)

Answer:How do I select these files .. XP vs 7

This is drving me insane, does anyone have an idea ? I thought doing it in list view rather than details would do it but maybe only in classic mode?

I need to count down 34 A's I can't just select until the status bar says 34, I have to actually count them myself - I thought thats what computers were for!

I've been having this problem for a little over two weeks now. whenever I open up my C drive and try to click on something, the file isn't highlighted. The funny part: there are no connected error messages, and it locks up if I click more than once. I have cleaned the disk and temporary files time and again and purged about 15 GB free space.
I run a Windows XP professional, 512MB ram, 2.42 GHz, 75 GB hard drive, 50 GB free. Any help here would be hot.

I've got an odd request (pun intended). Is there an easy way to select all of the even or odd numbered files in a folder? Every other file sort of thing. I import files from my camera and want to sort them, there's hundreds of files. It's time consuming and soemtimes if my finger twitches a little I double click or something and the computer makes a copy of everything I have selected. Do you guys and gals know of anything that can help me out? Thanks in advance.

Answer:Is There An Easy Way To Select Odd Or Even Files?

While there is no simple way to select several files (only using Windows API functions in a compiled program) it would be probably quite easy to run across all the files in a folder using some kind of Windows script and apply some action. So basically the question would rather be what your final goal is?
Also please post an example file name. All cameras I used didn't save the pictures with file names that were numeric only.
(I'm not at home next five days so don't worry if I don't answer immediately.)

i am using kazaa now. i download a lot of audio files. Is there a way to select all the files in the "TRAFFIC" column and get it to resume download? Cos it seems to be taking way to long. I am on cable

Answer:select all files using kazaa

How long is 'way too long'? The more downloads you have at once, the longer it will take for each one to finish. If you do it one at a time, and right click and hot 'Find more sources for download', then it should go faster. As far as I know, you can't make all the files resume at once, unless you hit resume on each file.

I am getting an intel x25 80gb ssd

I want to format my computer and put windows 7 on the ssd, but whenever I format windows 7 right now is there anyway I can save my media and files for school other than cramming them on a flash drive?

Answer:Can I select files to be saved when I format?

um, really simple..install Win7 onto the SSD, have your current drive disconnected, once installed, connect your current drive back up, should show up as D or E letter, then copy your files off of it to the SSD, once your sure everything is saved, then format the 'old' drive

beginning late last night, I can suddenly no longer select multiple files in a folder by holding control key and right-clicking on each file. It's like I'm not holding the control and it only highlights the file I'm currently clicking.
I tried system restore but it kept telling me the disk was excluded and no changes were made. I also ran a virus and spy scan and didn't come up with anything. The last software I downloaded was a midi recorder (anvil) but that was a few weeks ago and the problem just occurred. Obviously, I'm not tech savvy, so please be gentle. lol

I use Calibre to manage my .epub files, and these files are located in folders within folders within folders. My questions is whether I can use Windows Explorer to see all of the .epub files located located in my Calibre Library (which is the folder which contains all of the other folders/files) without having to go into each individual folder and copy the individual files out.

Answer:How do I select all files of a certain type in a folder?

Yes, you can. Just make sure that in your Folder Options you can view the file extension of your files. Then, at the "topmost" folder containing those folders within folders, type in ".epub" in the search box at the upper right corner of the Windows Explorer window. All your files within that folder that have a file extension of .epub will be listed.
This method can be used in looking for or listing all files of a certain file extension within certain folders.

I switched from Vista to 10. I am very happy with Win10. Except this is driving me nutcakes:

I used to be able to right click on the space in a folder and choose from the pop menu "select all." It is an instant grab of every file in that folder. I have done file selection this way for years till it is ingrained in my essence; a habitual finger mouse jerk I cannot stop myself from doing. Yet now I have to tediously pick each file holding Ctrl/Shift method or slowly box them with the mouse. Right click and "select all" was much quicker!

Is there a hidden option somewhere that would get "select all" back for me?

Hi,
I am running a backup hhd with a folder of approx. 1000 files and documents. On my computer I have the exact same folder with documents, which i edit often. The thing is that the backup is a few weeks old. When i use it to backup all my files, how can I copy the content of my computer on to the harddrive withhout having to pick which files need to be copied. Can i mark all the files and copy them, withhout having to deselect all the ones that havent been changed?

If i select all and say copy, Windows comes up saying: This file already exist do you want to replace it. That is time consuming to do 1000+ times.

So is it possibly that Windows or some program finds out by itself which additional files have been placed in the folder on the computer and needs to be backedup, without having to interfer myself?

thanks in advance.

Answer:how to backup on a hhd, without having to select the files manually

Hi

Possible to try is this http://www.majorgeeks.com/Karens_Replicator_d3917.html as it will

Options include repeated copies at intervals as short as a few minutes, or as long as several months, copy only files that have changed, and the replication of file deletions.Click to expand...

Or this one http://www.majorgeeks.com/Microsoft_SyncToy_for_Windows_XP_d4757.html

Which has these options:

Synchronize: New and updated files are copied both ways. Renames and deletes in one folder is repeated on the other.

Echo: New and updated files are copied left to right. Renames and deletes on the left are repeated on the right.

Subscribe: Updated files on the right are copied to the left is the file name already exists on the left.

Contribute: New and updated files are copied left to right. Renames on the left are repeated on the right. Similar to Echo, except there are no deletions.

Combine: New and updated files are copied both ways. Renamed and deleted files are ignored.Click to expand...

Do try with some temporary files and folders to sync as these applications are powerful and do delete files if they have been deleted in one of the sync'd folders unless disabled, like all things with important docs and files, keep a master backup on RW DVD/CD etc

Hi,
I lost a most basic keyboard and mouse function presumably when installing a new mouse and/or comprising Vista. What I cannot do anymore is select several files at a time and move/copy/delete them in explorer and subfolders. This neither works with the mouse nor with the keyboard, I have to move these files individually.
Does anyone have a quick fix, I went through all set up options for the basic functions of almost everything and I can't stand moving files individually.

I'm sure this is possible, but maybe I'm just tired tonight. I've 2 files that are similar but not identical in layout. For the current exercise I want to extract 7 fields that DO appear in both tables and are named the same. I don't actually care which table they come from, I just want to extract the fields into 1 table.

sql1 = "select col1, col2 , col4, col7 " &_
" from table1; "

sql2 = "select col1, col2 , col4, col7 " &_
" from table2; "
I'm working in vb - how do I get the outputs to concatenate or the OpenRecordset to have both sql's. It would make the rest of the code some much simpler. I want to read through the output and perform a calculation, but this will not be written back to the file; the information will be used to create a new file for reporting purposes only.

Answer:Solved: Select statement for similar files

Hi

I didn't test it, but it should be something like

Code:
sql = "select col1, col2 , col4, col7 from table1" _
& " UNION " _
& "select col1, col2 , col4, col7 from table2"

I'm sure that this has been answered somewhere, but I have tried so many different wordings of this question and I can't find anything. I'm probably just not using the correct terminology...

What I would like to know is: How can I select the frame that I want displaying as a video's thumbnail? I have a folder with all the episodes of a popular online cartoon (Made with halo 3) but the thumbnails for each episode aren't relevant to the content.

Is this something that can be achieved? Thank you for any help.

I was trying to use the "Search" function to grab all the .jpeg files on the drive, but when I try to copy and paste them as a group I get a "can't locate source or drive" type of message.
I can move them in small groups but it gets confusing- I keep losing my place and forgetting which ones I have already done.
I've tried viewing them by thumbnail, list, etc. but no dice.  There must be a way to do this?

are you copying all JPEGs or just selected ones? If you are copying all, you can use the following command (which can be run opening the "run command" dialogue from the start menu):robocopy <external>:\ C:\<destination-folder> /s *.jpgwhere <external> is the drive letter of your external drive and <destination-folder> is the folder where you want to drop all the jpgs.

I've essentially planned a new computer, consisting of a CPU, motherboard, and of course, a new hard drive, being a 128GB Force SSD. Currently, I have ~311GB worth of OS, programs and games installed on this 1TB Caviar, and I was originally thinking to, first, cut it down by uninstalling everything I wouldn't plan to keep on my SSD, perform an image backup with Macrium Reflect and restore the image to the SSD.

My friend informed me it's better to have a fresh OS install on SSDs (Why?), so, unless anyone wishes to tell me otherwise, I plan to update to Windows 8 along with this computer.

I don't currently have Reflect setup to backup images along with user media, nor would I know how to restore it. Otherwise, I would revert to cloud to backup just the important data, or simply copy it to one of my other HDDs. Regardless, first priority is to request help here, otherwise I'll fall flat on my face! What is the best way of going about this? Thanks

Answer:What's the best method of restoring select files to a new drive?

First I agree that you need a new (fresh/clean) install. You can try to use the old OS but it will get messy and if the old OS was an OEM version it can't be activated on the new system. Even a full version OS will need to be activated along with installing drivers, etc for the new system. Not a wise idea.

If you are going with a new PC and an SSD for the OS (and select programs), why not just connect the existing hard drive as a second drive in the new PC. You can then copy what data you want to the SSD. You can't copy programs as they must be installed. You can also use the hard drive for OS backups (backup to the hard drive).

I know theres software you can download that will wipe an entire drive with up to and more then 72 passes of random 1s and 0s to make data unrecoverable.

But is there software [preferably freeware] that can do this for selected files?

I want to erase some files and have no worry that they'll ever be recoverable again, Namely banking information and the like.

I've read that if you install something, like an OS on an HD with previous data, that works just as good. In otherwords, overwiting permanently deletes files.

I have categorized folders of thousands of pictures and every once in a while I need to sort through and certain files for a specific project. The way I've been doing this is to select one file at a time or if there happens to be a consecutive run of pictures I can grab the whole group and then copy and paste.

Is there a way to select one file and then select another file three files away and then another file ten files away? In other words highlighting and selecting non consecutive files to copy and paste. I'm thinking that Windows must have the capability to do this and I just haven't found the trick yet. Every time I do a search online all I find are instructions on how to select consecutive files.

Answer:How do you select non consecutive files in a folder to copy and paste?

Yes, press and hold down the Ctrl key, then select all the non-consecutive files you wish. Once selected you can then copy & paste or drag & drop them to wherever you wish.

I deleted all of my temp files to free-up some storage space. After the deletion occurred, fonts from different websites looked different and slightly distorted. Do you have any idea on how I can fix this by adding a certain type of temp file instead of restoring windows? I like it as it is and I don't want to redo all the changes I've made.

Answer:Font from select websites look different after deleting .temp files

Try a system restore

Hello. Recently my father downloaded a Windows update thing that included the newest version of Windows Media Player, and since then I have had trouble getting my preferred media player to work with files. I can still open up it up and select a file, but it is impossible to add it to the "Open with" list, which is annoying. No error messages pop up or anything, but when I go to Browse in the "Open with" window and select the program, it just reverts to the (unchanged) "Open with" window. Thanks in advance.

Answer:Unable to select a specific program to open files.

Goto My Computer > Folder Options, and click the File Types tab. Find the file extension of the video you're trying to play (avi, mpeg, etc) and click Change.

From there you can select your preferred media player from the program list, or click browse and navigate to the exe of the media player.

Hope that helps.

How do I select multiple files with the same file extension in vista?

In XP I used a utility called Better Select and this worked nicely. eg: right click on a .jpg file in a folder containing assorted file extensions, and then choose Better select from the context menu. This would select all files with .jpg extension in that folder. Unfortunately Better Select no longer appears in the context menu since I moved to Vista Home Premium. It seems to have a valid registry entry however.

Answer:select multiple files with the same file extension in vista

One can sort the Windows Explorer listing by file type.
You just need to be in the "Details" mode, and then you can select the first one, and then scroll to the bottom, and then "Shift and Click" and all will be selected.

Anybody else using NE6? If you want to burn a disc and you use this sequence:

Nero Smartstart|Audio|Make MP3 disc, when you select files from the directory using either drag-n-drop or cut-n-paste, it takes FOREVER to copy the files over.

However, when you use this sequence:

Nero Smartstart|Data|Make data disc, the files copy over instantaneously. All the options appear to be the same, no more and no less between methods.

So WHY does it take so long when choosing the first method and is there any benefit to doing so? I haven't been able to see any advantage to using the first method.

Hi,

I often make use of explorers built in hide files and folders tool to hide non essentential or relevant files and folders for example in Program Files it can get over crowded and I like to only make visible my custom installed applications but also other places on my hard drive like in my personal files I sometimes keep a folder which I keep files I no longer want instead of deleting them just encase I later need them.

Is their a convenient way to permanently hide already hidden folders whilst still having 'show hidden files and folders' ticked or better yet a hotkey like 'H' (Hide) and 'S' (Show) which could easily flip between show hidden files and folders

thanks

I've a bit of a problem here... for the past year I've been attaching different kinds of data to a single .RAR file. This left me with a 245GB .RAR, which I understand, shouldn't have created in the first place. But I did, sadly.

Now, to my knowledge WinRAR doesn't seem to have an option to delete certain files/folders without the need of extraction. I don't have much space left in my HDD, so extraction really isn't an option here.

Is there a command line prompt to help me with this? Thanks in advance, this seems like a nice forum .

PS: I'm terrible with cmd stuff, so in the case there's a solution like that, please bare with me.

Answer:Deleting select files/folders from a RAR without extraction (WinRAR)

Oh man. The only thing I can think of is to extract 1 file at a time. So, extract, delete, extract, delete, extract, delete, etc.

Hello gzaz, and welcome to Seven Forums.

If this just recently started to happen, then you might see if doing a system restore using a restore point (if available) dated before this started may be able to undo and fix this for you.

Hello, and thank you so much for checking out my question.

I'm trying to backup many *select* programs and files (audio, video and documents). I own a Toshiba Satellite (bought in 2003), which uses Windows XP and other files that came standard. I have added many, many programs and files to my PC since that time.

I would like to create a backup of most (but not all) of these programs and files. Then I would like to restore my computer to its original condition (I'm hoping that this process will take all of the little bugs and snails out of my daily struggle with this machine; I'm also hoping that this will help me to use the brand new iPod I bought 2 weeks ago that has stopped working with itunes and has not been fixed by any of the solutions I found on the iPod help site - but that's another story).

Here is one of the ineffective results of my exhaustive search. I have found information on how to use the XP backup program found on the Windows XP CD. Unfortunately, however, I don't have that CD because my computer came with XP already installed. I DO have the CD that came with my Toshiba Satellite called "Toshiba: Recovery and Applications / Drivers DVD Instructions".

The problem is that it seems like using this CD will erase all of the new files and programs I have on my computer.

1. What is the absolute best way to backup these select files without having to go out and buy new CDS or other products?

2. How do I go about... Read more

Answer:How to Backup Select Programs and Files on my Toshiba Satellite Before Reinstall

1. Norton Ghost, Nero Backup or other backup utilities, some are free as well.. these type of backup is taking a image snapshot, and some of them can take just snapshots of a certain folder/groups/drives/files (selective backup). Once backed up, you may need to reinstall teh programs or re add their registry keys, file associations etc (if you know what they are, easyer just reinstalling..). Media to backup to can be tape, cd/dvd, anohter hdd, network storage etc...

2. the toshiba cd is just like a windows xp cd, but only for that certain laptop, and does a full wipe and reinstall of the OS plus its customised software and drivers.. if you dont want those customised software, then just use a retail winxp cd and use the licence key on the bottom of the laptop.. but i havn;t tried that before...

I have a list of 1000 files names. Need to find them in one folder which has 5000+ files in it. Any possible way to highlight those files from my list so I can copy paste to a new folder?

Answer:select/search multiple files, copy and paste to a new folder

That is an easy task for a batch file, if your list of 1000 files names can be saved in a txt file with every file name on separate line. Something like this:
Code:
Report_23.docx
Presentation45.ppt
Diagram_67.xls
Then save this list to txt file; rename it to list.txt and put in your folder of 5000 files.

Download and extract a script in attachment. Start that script "ZZZZ_script.bat" AS ADMINISTRATOR , in the same folder of 5000 files. It will open your list.txt file(which should be there already) and will start searching for files and making copies to C:\your_files folder, which is predefined in that script.

Hello,

I'm trying to create a menu where there is initially one select box (Funding Group) displayed with approximately 10 options available depending on what's in the database table.

I want another text box (Program) to be displayed, but only where the program codes have a Funding Group that was selected in the first box BUT have no duplicate program codes (see below for explanation).

For instance, there are fund groups A0, B0, C0, etc. The program table in the database might contain some rows that look like this:
Code:
Fund_Group Prog_Code Prog_Descr
A0 101 Fred [so, prog code 101 has more than one fund]
A0 102 Ethel
B0 101 Fred [so, prog code 101 has more than one fund]
C0 203 Ricky
If the user selects Funding Groups A0 and B0, the Program box might initially contain this: [note the funding group and program code are concatenated in the value field --- I'm thinking this will help me determine which ones to add/remove]
Code:
value text
A0~101 101 - Fred
A0~102 102 - Ethel
B0~101 101 - Fred
[Note: the customer doesn't want to see Fred listed twice but I will worry about removing the duplicate entry for program 101 later... right now I'm trying to generate a box that contains only valid entries even if they are duplicated initially]

Whew! I think the functional description of the problem will end up taking more lines than the actual... Read more

Ok, I have googled this error and see this is common. Hopefully, I have missed something simple. I replaced my hard drive and installed the complete version of Windows 7 Home Premium. All worked great, till the next day when I turned the PC back on. I get the error message: reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in select boot device. If I restart and hold F2 and go in Bios, exiting with or without changes will allow the PC to boot into windows, however, once I power down and restart, I get the same error message. I have tried booting with the Window 7 disk, perform repair and even reloaded the entire OS again. Same issue. I arrange the boot order, found that windows recognized my hard drive, etc...all the things listed as possible fixes for this error. Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated. The new hard drive is a sata, 1 tb. It replaced the maxtor diamond 9, 260gig. Very frustrated here and it doesn't help that I have limted PC knowledge beyond what I have tried.

Do you have a Restore Point or saved Registry set? Most cleaners make a backup even if it is only a .reg file.

Long story short...I have a computer that died on me...SSD hard drive and all. I keep a clone of that hard drive on my large data hard drive. Basically, I have a partition that is the same size as what my old SSD hard drive was. I have cloned that back onto a new SSD hard I have now installed. When I boot my pc up with just the SSD hard drive it boots from the SSD hard drive (or course), but as soon as I add my large data drive back into the computer my computer boots from that partition. So, aside from just deleting cloned partition on my larger hard drive, is there a way to force my computer to boot from the SSD every time?

okay, so you all know how you can move your mouse over several files and select them by holding in the left mouse button, or use ctrl + click, go to the "edit" Menu and click "select all". well, Windows Vista Won't let me do that, but only on my account, it works fine on other accounts. I Had the same problem several months ago and I got fed up with it to the point where I just made a new account and moved all my files over. that fixed the problem. but no it came back. if I try to go to the edit menu and click "select all" it won't let me because it is greyed out. I haven't changed anything. I don't want to have to go through creating a new account again because I have ALOT of files on my profile. I tried searching for anyone else who had the same problem, but nothing. it doesn't stop when i restart my computer. I've tried resetting all of the folder settings but that didn't fix it. I Have windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit, if that has anything to do with it.

Answer:how to select the driver to install windows 10

the flash drive must be bootable and contain a windows 10 iso.
you probably have to set your BIOS to boot from Legay mode
you may also have to set the USB as first boot device
you then power on the PC with the USB stick in one of the ports (rear ports direct off the motherboard are better).

When setting up my wireless internet modem for the home computer, the Network and Sharing Center gives me three choices of Home Network, Work Place and Public Network. I read the help information on the subject but I am still a little confused. I use only the one home computer within my home. Should I choose the 'Home Network' option or would it be more safe and secure to choose the 'Public Network' option?

I also need to set up a VPN connection for web browsing. Here again I am asked to choose. Do I choose Public Network for this?

Thank you.

They're really for firewall settings. You only really want to be on public if your on an open access point. (Public connection)

While you can only setup homegroups in a home connection.

Hello,

I am unable to select shapes in Windows Paint.

At the top left edge of the screen there is a small white square. The pixel icon at the bottom of the screen shows this as a very small pixel. Opening and closing Paint doesn't delete the "pixel"

Has anyone experience this problem before? Is there a solution?

Thanks

raiderfan

Answer:Windows 7 Paint will not select shapes

Your image area is set to little square 1px by 1px.
That pixel is your work area (default background in MsPaint is white).

Please go to File menu (Next to HOME ribbon), in that menu select Properties.
In Image Properties window click on Default button.

You can also try to drag that pixel while holding left mouse button and moving it to bottom right of the screen. It should expand.

I have a problem with a video driver that wants to be installed, but when it's installed the system becomes unstable (it can hang or automatically restart). This is a long standing problem on certain ASUS notebooks with certain NVIDIA display adapters. The driver is for the NVIDIA GeForce 9650M GT display adapter on an ASUS M70Vn with a 64-bit architecture. I am currently using the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, which provides a stable environment and works good enough for my purposes. How can I prevent the NVIDIA driver from being installed with the Windows updates? In earlier versions of Windows (for example, Windows 7), you could select which updates to install by putting a checkmark in front of the updates you wanted installed. Not so with Windows 10. All you get is a list of updates that are available and a click-box that says "Install now". I'm running Windows 10 version 1511 (OS Build 10586.0).

Answer:How do you select which Windows 10 updates to be installed?

Hello mvaugeri, and welcome to Ten Forums.

I'm afraid that there's not an option to select which updates to install by default in Windows 10.

If you like, you should be able to uninstall and hide the update though.

Hello. I could not find any answers to this question, so I'm posting new. Sorry if this has been addressed elsewhere and I couldn't find it. I'm running an X220 Thinkpad and I recently made the switch from Windows 7 Pro to Windows 10 Pro.  I use my trackpoint a lot.  Under Windows 7, occasionally for reasons I never understood a trackpoint feature that was called 'Press-to-Select' in the Mouse Control panel would enable whereby pressing on the trackpoint would cause it to act like clicking a mouse button. I hated that feature - especially when it would get hypersensitive and cause the mouse to click and jump all over my screen - and under Windows 7 I used to know where to go to disable 'Press-to-Select' after it myseteriously enabled itself. Since switching to Windows 10, 'Press-to-Select' seems to be permanently on, in a very annoying hyper-sensitive way.  However, whereas I used to be able to go and turn it off in Windows 7, now when I go into the Mouse section of the control panel I no longer see any reference to 'Press-to-Select' being enabled or disabled. Please, someone, help me disable Press-to-Select for my trackpoint under Windows 10.  What changed?

Then Go to Start/Run and type powercfg.cpl and press enter. Check the power settings that you like. (eg) When I press the Power Button the computer shuts down.
If you still have a problem, boot into Setup (Bios) go to Power Settings, and set them the way you like it.

If above is set or doesn't resolve the issue, in your PC's BIOS settings, check to see if you have a Plug and Play option. If you do, try toggling this setting (off if it's on, and vice versa).

Dear members,

I've enabled autologin on my system. However since a while, every time I select shutdown, the system justs logs me off and immediately logs back on.

When I disable autologon, I get the logon screen. The same happens when I choose the "sleep" option.

Furthermore my system is supposed to hibernate after 1 hour but this nevers happens.

Any idea what's causing this?

Thanks for your help,

Chris.

In Windows Explorer, Excel and other Apps, when I Left Click they seem to behave very jumpy is if it was dbl click or a click & Enter. This has being driving me so mad that I Reformated the C drive. All Apps and only Apps are on C drive and all data on other drives. Even after Reformating twice the problem remained. It's at it now as I type; when I tried to copy and paste. I use Windows XP Ver2002 with SP3.Thank you Padraig

Answer:problem with select when clicked in windows

You probably DID NOT need to re-load Windows. You probably have a hardware problem, NOT a software problem. If this is with an external (USB, PS/2, or wireless) mouse, try a different mouse. If this is with a touchpad on a laptop or netbook, try an external mouse. If that doesn't help.... Tell us the make and model of your brand name system, or if you have a generic desktop system, the make and model, or at least the model, of your mboard. The model of a brand name system is usually on a label on the outside of the case, or if it's a Dell system, go here to find your Service tag number, tell us what it is:http://support.dell.com/support/top...The model of a mboard in a a generic desktop system is usually printed in obvious larger characters on the surface of the mboard, often between the slots, or near the center of the mboard. Some computers show a screen with the model number on it while booting the computer.

In Finland Toshiba Satellite L670-128 comes with pre-installed Windows 7 Home Premium and the user should be able to choose between English, Swedish, Finnish, Norwegian and Danish versions of Windows. However, when I started the computer for the very first time, it started to make some final installations and setups in Swedish. It newer asked me what language version of Windows I would like to use, so now I am having Swedish Windows in my computer. It is however English version of Windows that I would like to use, so how can I change the operation system language?

Answer:How to select which language version of Windows to use?

hi,

As i know you can change language only in Windows 7 Ultimate or Enterprise

I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium SP2 and have Windows Updates set to notify me when updates are available instead of automatically downloading and installing. (I like to see what is about to be installed). No problem until a couple of months ago. Whenever an update is available I get a notification icon on the task bar, click on that, which brings up a window with a statement such as for example: "9 important updates available (9 updates apparently preselected), 2 optional updates available", etc.

Before this problem started I could click on the heading "9 important updates" or "2 optional updates", which would bring up a window briefly explaining what the updates pertained to and the ability to check or uncheck any particular update for installation. Since this problem manifested itself, clicking on these heading brings up nothing except the spinning circle icon by the cursor. I've waited up to 10 minutes for something to happen, but I have to bring up the task manager (ctrl+alt+del), and close windows update on the applications tab (which states windows update is not responding) to get the window to close. Then a message box appears stating that windows explorer is restarting. At the next reboot the windows update icon appears once again.

Up until now, although frustrating, I've just let it ride and only installed the recommended preselected updates (important updates are apparently already selected automatically). I gave... Read more

Recently my Windows 7 laptop has refused to play any Windows sounds (errors, default beep when changing volume, etc.)

I have looked in my Personalization, and the Sounds option is followed by the word Loading. Upon entering the window to change Windows' sounds, the current sound scheme is blank with none of the default or installed sound schemes appearing.

Is there any way of fixing this, besides reinstalling Windows (I do not have a disc or enough internet to download an ISO) or anything drastic that may cause me to lose data and settings?

Answer:No Windows sounds, unable to select any

The sounds (schemes) seem to be tied to Themes. There is nothing, that I see in my system, in the turn windows functions on or off for themes.

You could try running SFC /scannow in a DOS command window, but I think you will need the Windows disc if it finds any system files missing. But, give it a shot anyway.'

Other than the System File Checker scan, I don't think there is anything else you can do without a disc. If you have a friend that has the capability to download and burn a Windows DVD ISO, that would be the next best option.

I don't particularly want to re install my OS although it is screaming out for it. Basically I seemed to have deleted something, possibly from the registry and I no longer have the New, file or folder option on the right click menu. It's even vanished from the drop down menu in windows explorer. The only way I can create new folders is to go into MS Dos mode which is a pain.Fileman.exe is not present on my PC either, not sure if this is required.Help greatfully appreciated

Answer:Windows 98SE cant RIGHT click, select NEW......

If you have your 98se installation disc reinstall over existing os, this way you will not lose any of your programs or settings

so, there was a problem with the bootup, and i popped in the windows 7 installation DVD, and repaired it(via system repair). all went well, i was able to get into windows. the "select which os to boot from" message popped up, so i disabled that and chose the wrong OS to be the default, the corrupted one [which is called "windows 7 home premium (recovered)]. i also, foolishly, set the timer to 0, so i can't even choose the "other" windows 7 os, the one that is not corrupt. also, bcedit does not work on DOS prompt. how can i get the default OS boot menu before bootup, again? thanks in advance

Answer:Need to select the default Windows 7 OS at boot, cannot get into windows

You now have 2 installs of Win7...That being said at bootup immediately strt tapping F8 which will bring up the advanced boot menu...From there you should be able to undo the things you chose poorly on...

I had to format and reinstall my windows and since then I've been getting a DOS screen everytime I boot my computer. The DOS prompt is asking me to select which Windows to use, and it gives me two choices which are the same Windows XP. I figure that it must have been something I did while I was reinstalling. Does anyone know how to disable that screen? Appreciate any feedback.

Answer:Reinstalled Windows, now getting DOS screen asking to select Windows.

It sounds like you managed to install a second application of Windows. The easiest way would be to wipe the drive so that you know that it is clean and reinstall the operating system. You can use a free application like Active KillDisk to wipe the drive.

Loaded a free copy of Windows 10 a few days ago onto my old Dell insprion 1720 running Win7. All ok apart from setting up Cortana. Will not allow her to select my location. I am UK running English(UK) and UK Keyboard. When clicking on Cortana button only shows Search, Home, Settings and Feedback on Start side bar...

No Notebook icon...

Answer:Windows 10: Cortana setup will not allow me to select Location

Hi, is the Location tile on the Action Centre (Windows key + A) flyout active- sort of 'lit up'- if not, what happens if you click it?

Is the geolocation service running?
(Windows key + R, type services.msc in the box)

If you still have problems with Location, please see Fix 3 here:
Fix: Cortana Is Not Working In Windows 10

Did you do an upgrade, or a clean install?

Try this:

Hi,
I have several Windows 7  PC's that will not search PDF contents on a new Windows 2016 server.
I have enabled the latest iFilter, made sure that all network shares are indexed etc..
I can search within all office products but cannot search contents of PDF's.
We originally had an older SBS server that we were using and that had the ability to search the contents of pdf's quite easily.
We upgraded our domain ( actually moved the workstations to a new domain when we installed 2016) and after the move users are complaining that they cannot search PDF's anymore.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

J.J.
