8 months old T460S suddenly breaks it's left hinge

Question: 8 months old T460S suddenly breaks it's left hinge

I bought a brand new Lenovo Thinkpad T460S in Nov 2016. This is supposed to be their premium business laptop range. I uses it daily, simple computer work. Lately it starts to have problem hibernating and waking from sleep/hibernation. Yesterday the steel left hinge suddenly broke. I contacted the Lenovo Support today and they replied : The three year international Warranty does not cover the hinges. It's like you buy a new car, then the hinge of your drive breaks and it's not covered by warranty? What kind of logic is that? They want to charge me for the repair. I am getting a quote from them, this is probably the last Thinkpad I will ever buy from Lenovo! I am getting a quote from them. I wonder if we can get the part myself and attempt a self repair. But this is deeply disappointing!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I own an HP ENVY TS 15 Notebook. It is about 3.5 years old and has not been dropped or externally damaged.  Upon opening the laptop recently, the left hinge made a gnarly crackling noise.  Internally, part of the hinge broke.  The left side now sits a little bit lower than the right and the laptop separates at the seam a little bit.  Otherwise, it was operable.  Not long after, my laptop's fan was running a little faster than normal as I played a game when I heard a number of forboding cracks and the fan stopped. Upon inspection at a computer repair shop, pieces of the broken hinge got into the ventilation fan and caused three blades to snap off.  In addition, the pieces attaching the hinge to the inside of the laptop's body snapped off.  Can you please provide me with some support? I am a student so price and length of repair are important to me.  Based on some research, this hinge's design is flawed so its isn't my fault that it broke and certainly neither is the breaking of the ventilation fan.

Answer:Left hinge broken, resulting debris breaks ventilation fan

The right hinge broke on my ENVY m6. Now the left one is about to go. The waranty is up and I have noticed that this is a common problem with this product. I should hope that there has been a recall on this. HP should at least repair the issue free of charge (waranty or no waranty). I take great care of my things and my computer is no exception. Please give me advice on this one. I am extremely disappointed at this point.

Very frustrated with this...I opened the laptop gently as I would always do  and the hinge on the left side of the laptop just snapped and popped out of the plastic monitor frame.  The design of the hinges are just terrible and i can now see how they work because the case has been damaged just from opening and closing the laptop.  I can now see inside the whole left side of the case.  To top it off I have already invested considerable time into upgrading the OS to Windows 10 and customizing and installing software on this laptop. I cannot close my laptop entirely since the screen closes on an incorrect angle. Since I am out of warranty, is there any way to fix this problem? After reading several posts, it seems to be a common problem with the envy models.

To whom it may concern, I am writing this message to inform of you of my displeasure with one of your products. I purchased a HP Envy M6 in August of 2015 at around $700. Last night I went to open my laptop and I heard a loud snap. The noise that was heard was my hinge breaking as well as it snapping the plastic from the bottom base cover. I have now had three HP laptops and all three broke the same way. After doing some research online I found out that this is a common thing for HP laptops, specifically the Envy models. I even noticed that there was a class action lawsuit against HP for their hinges specifically. I went around to repair shops to get a quote on how much it would to be fix and was quoted from $150-$200.I was shocked at the amount quoted as I already had put a large amount of money into the purchase of the product and the product being relatively new. It is unfair to your consumers to have high priced top of the line products break on them on a regular basis. I am inquiring with your company to see if there is anything you can do to help rectify the situation. If nothing can be done I will stay away from all HP products permanently. Please feel to reply with any questions or comments you have about this incident. Thank you in advance for the timely response.

I have a 6 month old Inspiron 5558 that won't close properly due to a bad hinge on the right side. Spent an hour with support, only to tell me that this is not covered under warranty, even though there is still another 6 months left under Mfg warranty. The hinge is cracked, which in turn has cracked the cover of the LCD. In order to close the laptop, we have to squeeze the hinge with the screen, and slowly close. From reading through posts, it appears that Dell has ongoing issues with hinges. I totally understand and would expect a two year old device not to be covered, but at 6 months? And a broken hinge is not covered? Anyone have any thoughts?

Answer:Inspiron 5558 - 6 Months Old - BROKEN HINGE

Nope. Nothing. I had many calls with support and they still insisted that it's normal wear and tear on the machine. I purchased through Costco, and they tried calling support and received the same answer. Long story short, I will never purchase a Dell device again. Ever.

Hi dears,I've bought in my country (Italy) the Spectre x360 (2015 edition), model 4102nl, 8gb RAM, 256 SSD, i7, QHD display in september, so it's two months old.Since first day I've unboxed my Spectre, I've noticed what looks like a manufacturing defect, despite it's very tiny.My right hinge isn't aligned with the display lid, compared to left hinge and it sticks out from the lid less than 1mm. The left hinge doesn't sticks out.Furthermore, when I open the display lid sometimes (usually when I close the display totally) I can hear a very faint noise coming from the right hinge.Could this lead to breaking itself in the immediate future? Can this cause the display glass to break because of its misalignment?I'd like to avoid to send it to service because I need the laptop for work, only in the case it doesn't cause any problem in the future.I've attached some images examples and a video with the faint sound when opening it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2j6u3jpL6M left hinge from top  left hinge from side (the good one) right hinge (assumed to be defective) from the topright hinge (assumed to be defective) from the side. It sticks out about < 1mm on the top part

Hi.  After looking over some of the post, it looks like hinges are a problem for Lenovo.  My U450P is less than 4 months old and the hinge popped as I was trying to close it one evening last week.  (No I didn't drop it and have only taken out of the house 2-3 times.)  I didn't continue to try and close the lid, because it looked like it was pulling the top corner apart. Anyway after calling support and then driving an hour away to nearest FedEx Express, I got a call today - it will cost me $180 to repair.  Of course I had to close it to put it in the shipping box, and as it closed the broken hinge did pull apart the top slightly.  They consider that accidental damage and assume I dropped it. I was also admonished for not getting the extra warranty coverage.  Shouldn't a computer last more than 3 1/2 months without having to pay for extra warranties!!!  It seems from reading these boards that Lenovo hinges are an issue.  I certainly had no problems with previous laptops. So - am I just stuck, or has anyone found help with their hinge situations. thanks!

Hi all, i'm currently having some issues with the T420 in regards to the hinges. I got it on April 2011 and was reasonably happy with it, OK there was a stuck pixel but its not directly in line of vision so I can live with that. However after 5 months of relatively normal usage my hinges have become really loose, so much that at some angles it can't support the weight of the lid. It's disappointing considering the hinge on my 4 year old T61 is still relatively strong in comparison. I have 3 years warranty on the system so I thought I might as well call Lenovo Support (UK) to get it fixed, however the Lenovo rep stated that it can't be replaced under warranty as its within "reasonable wear and tear" and therefore, require a fee if I want to send it in for replacement. For sure I understand if it's 2 years old or something but 5 months? Something is not right. I was able to bide some time with the Lenovo rep to keep my case number open for a few days in regards to this, but I would like some clarification on the issue with the warranty on hinges. Reading posts on this forum indicates that the hinges are covered under warranty (ref) as long it hasn't been involved in heavy damage which mine hasn't. I also uploaded some videos of the issues i'm facing so you guys can have an idea. Is it unreasonable for me to get this fixed under warranty? I would really like some help on this, particularly from the senior mods or staff who can help me on my issue since I only have... Question: Left Hinge

I have had the HP Envy for some time and expected it to be a premium product by HP leading me to believe that it would be a good long term laptop to use. Unfortanately, this is not the case, after spending a huge sum of money on a laptop I would not expect the laptop to have such a stupid problem, where the laptop seperates from it's casing. After doing some research I have found that this is a regular fault and HP aren't doing much about it. I am giving HP a last chance to contact me as to what they can do for me before taking action myself.

Question: Left hinge

Hi This is about the back cover below the left hinge which pops out around 4 to 5 mm when laptop is opened or closed. After checking, it seems that the back cover area that supports the left hinge is very weak and damages easily. I always thought that every laptop maker has tests which certifies how well a laptop deals with continuous opening and closing. Obviously corners have been cut and quality control have not been vigilant. With the number of complaints this has, HP should do an unconditional recall to redeem their name. I was considering getting a Spectre for my wife but now I have doubts about thier quality and customer focus.

The Desktop was left over winter and failed to boot on return. It freezes on an ASUS screen - is this a Boot Screen? Have to pull the plug to shut down. Cannot view XP CD disk or Floppy Start-UP disk. Booting with F8 or Delete does not always enter CMOS setup or Safe Mode. It did ONCE boot up to Windows and seemed to work OK. I tried to run CHKDSK but it froze again on the ASUS screen during a normal Restart. New CMOS battery fitted but it made no difference. When I get into Safe Mode, the screen is almost illegible due to flicker as is the ASUS screen (at which it freezes). The exit options at the ASUS screen do not work - ie Tab and Alt F2. When I can get into CMOS / BIOS Set-UP the screen is stable and all seems correct. It does not recognise the XP CD on boot-up. It used to recognise the Start-up floppy and go into Safe + Command Prompt, but now it says it is the wrong disk.Any ideas on how to tackle this? Thanks in anticipationKen

Question: Broken Left Hinge

My left display hinge is also acting up and the left corner seems to be coming apart from the force being applied by the hinge especially as the display is hinged down to its closed position.  I've been suspecting something was weird for some time now but recently I'm afraid it will break soon, what can be done?  My laptop is out of warranty (bought from Costco) but otherwise is in perfect condition and I use it daily.  It is crazy this is happening.

Question: HP envy left hinge

I've read in the forum that someone got their laptop repaired at NO COST?? Even after lapse of warranty? Wow, what did you do to convince HP to do this? I have sent several requests and complaints and a HP rep phoned to ask about it then told me to pay $300.00 for the repair. I do believe a substandard quality back cover which undoubtedly costs very cheaply to make is a good trade of for keeping customers. But it seems HP is more concerned about making money once and not considering about after sales and follow up sales. They certainly lost me and I was considering buying the Spectre but not anymore. BTW I checked an online supplier for the back cover and it sells for $35.00 from China but I prefer to do the repairs myself.

Hi,

I have purchased a Lenovo Y560 laptop on 03-10-2010 and  I got this left hinge issue. I was about to close the laptop when I suddenly heard a click sound and after a thorough inspection I found that the left hinge is broken without any reason. I went through a lot of discussions over the internet and I found out that this has been a common problem in this product.

Answer:Y 560 Left Hinge Issue

I just wanted to report that I'm having issues with my left hinge as well. It's very similar though not identical in nature. Anyway' I had noticed that my left hinge was looser than the right hinge a long time ago, very soon after the purchase. and after I got my machine back from the service center after they replaced my motherboard. I never though much of it, but I decided to investigate this morning. As I was opening and closing the laptop, I noticed that the back of the computer next to where the battery is bulges out a bit when i open the computer, and bends in when I close it. It only happens on the left side. Then, I turn my computer upside down to see if there are any loose screws, and I see a weird piece of plastic in the screw hole where the bulge occurs, and I pull it out. I turns out it's a section of twisty tie, the kind that you use to close your sandwich bread bags. After I pulled that out, the screw straight up just fell out of the hole. There was nothing holding that screw in place except for that little section of twisty tie! Anyway, even with the screw out, the bulge hasn't gotten any worse, and the screen hasn't gotten any looser, which tells me that nothing has been attached to the other end of the screw for a long time now. I'm going to call the service center to see if they can replace the body of the machine, or possibly send me a replacement. I'll update you with any news. Update: So I got in contact with Lenovo and am getting ready to ship my ma... Read more

Question: Left Hinge problem

We have purchase our HP Envy TS 15 from Costco online about 3 years ago. The warranty has expired. About couple of months ago I saw the left hinge seperating from the casing. It makes a clicking sound when the screen is closed/opened. I am not sure if may be getting worse. But today, not sure if this is related but I realized the battery was drained and although the computer was plugged, it was not charging.  After reading numerous other posts on this hinge issue, I wanted to see if HP can provide a path forward to resolve the issue and repair my computer. Thanks for your time, Alp

Question: Broken left hinge

I have had my Envy for about 2 years. The left hinge has broken and when I went to have it repaired, I was told it would cost over $300! This same thing happened to the HP laptop I had previously that this new one replaced! The repair place told me is was the exact same thing that happened to my old laptop and that it was a common issue! Why hasn't there been a recall? Obviously this is happening constantly! Does anyone know how to fix the issue?Thank you

The left hinge of the laptop is causing the bottom case to pop off. Whenever I open the notebook, the black bottom portion of the laptop separates from the top grey portion, exposing the inside of the laptop. When I close the laptop, the bottom case snaps back into place.I have had this laptop for over three years, with no other issue. Is there anything HP can do to resolve this hardware problem? Thanks

Hi there,I recently ordered an X1 2017 but sent it back for several reasons. One minor issue with it was that the left hinge was slightly crooked. Not by a lot, some might not even notice, but for me not really acceptable for a 2k5? device. Unfortunately it was the first thing I noticed during unboxing. With the lid closed you see that it's not parallel to the rest of the device. Meanwhile I have ordered one again and unfortunately it's the same in terms of crooked hinge. So I'm suspecting a general "problem". Obviously the support team never ever heard of such a thing.Just wondering - how is your's? I don't think I'll do anything about it since I don't think the service team will do a better job than the factory and generally things don't tend to get better by taking them apart. However - just curious if I'm the only one. Cheers, reach

This is in response to the 2014 post, "HP Envy 17" Left Hinge and Casing," and I'm posting here b/c I'm not able to reply in that thread (maybe HP got tired of hearing about it?). I am having the exact same issue but with my HP Envy 15.6". I purchased it 13 months and 3 days ago. Up until this point, I've loved it. It's been an excellent machine. That is until this morning. The left hinge completely broke and the plastic piece detached. When I close the laptop I can place it back on, but when I open it up it pops off again and makes popping noises. I want to note that I have taken good care of it, gentle care (in fact I haven't opened and closed it very much, no reason the hinges would be worn after only a year), and basic, routine usage. I don't know what to do. I'm concerned that this will only get worse over time and am worried of the potential internal damage this could cause. I've read all of the threads, the many, countless customers who have the same issue. It really calls into question HP's brand and the quality of their products. I assume my warranty is expired. And it's very suspicious that this happened just at the year mark, about a month after my warranty expired. This seems to have been a known problem since 2014 (almost 3 years!) with no solutions for customers. The only option I've seen is a repair at around $150-300, which I think is outlandish to pay and insulting to customers. This is not average "wear and tear." This is clearly a design flaw... I have the  same problem described above. Envy 17 (silver) i5 - the corner of the case is spreading apart and now it is also happening on the right side. I have had to use gorilla tape to try to hold the case together.  It appears that this is a design flaw for this laptop. My HP Envy 17 SE has shown the well-known left hinge error in its hinge area, something consistent with recent complaints in a design flaw. I purchased it in 2014 for my university usage and it's right at that critical point in my Senior year where I cannot go without this dependable laptop. Took it to get looked at and evaluated at a local shop and they said that the needed part to stop the splitting is no longer available. It looks like its an external thing and the left hinge pops. It is horrible to have such a bad issue when the brand is generally dependable but I am sad to say that this happened fairly recently after my warranty expiration. Left hinge pops and it seems like my laptop is now nothing but a glorified desktop. Are there any solutions to this? This brand has been dependable for my family and I happened to get the ENVY's "flawed" design as my university pick.

i have had this laptop for just over 2 years now. i can't remember when this problem started because at first it was hardly noticeable, but for at least a few months now i have been having issues with my the left hinge/corner on my laptop. apparently this is a pretty common problem among many acer models. at first it seemed as though the hinge had gotten slightly out of place and would need to kind of pop back in every once in a while as i opened or closed the lid. i wasn't worried about it until a several weeks passed and it was happening every single time i opened or closed the lid. when i turned the laptop around so i had a better look at the hinge, i saw that the 2 plastic pieces that hold the laptop together were actually splitting apart in the corner. this has only gotten worse over time--the gap between the pieces keeps getting wider and the split travels further. i think it's inevitable that pretty soon the power adapter is going to shift out of place because of this and i won't be able to charge the laptop, rendering it useless. is there anything i can do to fix this other than replacing the lid/hinges? i feel like even if i get the parts replaced, the same thing is just going to start happening again eventually. should i just go ahead and start saving for a new laptop (NOT another acer)?

Answer:aspire E1-531 left hinge broken?

I have this same problem!! I went searching online and discovered that I am definitely not alone.I would like to know how or if it it repairable and/or is Acer willing to compensate for repair service.

Hello, I have a problem with the left hinge on my HP Envy 17 Quad Edition Laptop. At some point the casing around the hinge started breaking up causing litle bits of plastic to rattle around inside the laptop. This caused the fan to stop working resulting in 90B errors on startup. Hi, I purchased my Envy M6 about three years ago. It is obviously out of warranty. Today, the left hinge mechanism failed.I am unable to close the lid without causing further damage, as case is splitting aroud the hinge. After briefly looking for solutions to this problem I was astounded by the sheer number of reports of the exact same malfunction occuring on this device. With countless reports of the problem, I find it incomprehensable that there has been no recall to resolve the malfunctioning parts.  Rather than a recall, the information I can find through these forums suggests that HP is charging customers for the privilage of repairing their malfunctioning product.I'm hoping that HP is able to address this issue!

Left hinge issue - the very same I have been reading about in this blog. I purchased my beloved laptop in August of 2013, it is NOT a refurbished item ; it is the Beats Audio version. This is the second time this has happened to my laptop, the first time was about 1.5 years ago. An excellent service technician at Future Shop was able to take the back off to find the tiny screw that had worked its way out, there wasn't even a charge for the service. I miss this technician, she was the best one I have ever dealt with. Before this issue my warranty was coming up so I took it in for a tune up. I mentioned I was having issues with the sound; I thought it was a software issue, it wasn't. They ended up sending it back to HP, the motherboard was replaced. Now the left hinge is gone again, this time I am told that HP doesn't have replacement parts as now small pieces have broken off inside. My option is to have it glued with no guarantee.I NEED my laptop. I can't afford a new one as I graduated from college a few months ago with no job yet. What are my options; can I have another one built from the good parts?

The left hinge of my Aspire E series laptop is so off the hook now, when I open and close the computer it exposes a gap and you can see the computer inside. That can't be good! Also, over the two years I've had it, the small screws on the bottom fall out and I have to constantly screw them back in - one of them being the left hinge corner screw. And now I can't even screw a screw in as it just turns round and round. I don't know what to do...is it over for this computer? This is the second Aspire I've had in only five years.

Just checking if there has been a fix for this since I see this has been a problem for many people. I as well noticed the hinge and casing pulling apart but never thought it was broken. Until the fan stop working and computer wanted to shut down. Quite frequently I heard the fan making screetching noises which probably had the plastic from the hinge and casing floating around it. My question is this an easy fix or just buy a new laptop. Paid alot of money for this and works great other than this problem. Thanks

The left Hinge on my HP Envy has become loose; this poses a problem when opening/closing the lid as it grinds against the casing.  I've had a lot of difficulty navigating HP's Customer support website.  I travel a lot with this laptop and despite treating it with great care the hinge has come loose/broken (from what I understand has become a common problem).  I am out of the warranty and was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of a few repair options.  I like HP, I find this whole issue disheartening.   Thank you for any help you can give.

My Envy laptop is not under waranty any more and has alway worked fine until this fall when I opened it and the hinge on the left side of the screen popped and broke.  I have not figured out what I will do to fix it yet but just wanted to put it out there that you can add my name to the growing list of hinges that have broken,  Seems odd that there are so many of us.

My left hinge is broken I am guessing by reading other complaints? I have had this laptop for a little over a year and have never mishandled it in and kind of way. Now it will not turn on because it is saying problems with the fan because everytime I open it the bottom pops off. I tried to email HP but they would not reply because my warranty was up August 15th. I was wondering how much it would cost for HP to fix it? Or the Geek Squad with Best Buy? I need it fixed as soon as possible! It is my school laptop.

i have had this laptop for just over 2 years now. i can't remember when this problem started because at first it was hardly noticeable, but for at least a few months now i have been having issues with my the left hinge/corner on my laptop. apparently this is a pretty common problem among many acer models. at first it seemed as though the hinge had gotten slightly out of place and would need to kind of pop back in every once in a while as i opened or closed the lid. i wasn't worried about it until a several weeks passed and it was happening every single time i opened or closed the lid. when i turned the laptop around so i had a better look at the hinge, i saw that the 2 plastic pieces that hold the laptop together were actually splitting apart in the corner. this has only gotten worse over time--the gap between the pieces keeps getting wider and the split travels further. i think it's inevitable that pretty soon the power adapter is going to shift out of place because of this and i won't be able to charge the laptop, rendering it useless. is there anything i can do to fix this other than replacing the lid/hinges? i feel like even if i get the parts replaced, the same thing is just going to start happening again eventually. should i just go ahead and start saving for a new laptop (NOT another acer)?

Answer:aspire E1-531 left hinge broken?

I have this same problem!! I went searching online and discovered that I am definitely not alone.I would like to know how or if it it repairable and/or is Acer willing to compensate for repair service.

After two years of use the left Hinge on my HP Envy broke.  Where does one get it fixed and is it fixable?  It seems to interfer with the usage if one moves the lid back and forth.  Is it connected to hardware that will evenutally shut my computer down?  I would rather be able to take it a part and put a replacement hinge instead of sending it away?

I have looked several places on how to get this fixed, yet I am also seeing that HP will send a replacement for free. This has become such a nuisance. I have taken metaciously care of my laptop and to have this happen is unacceptable. It has nearly broke all of the plastic slits on the left side. Will someone please help me? Thanks
