Unable to minimise a maximised window

Question: Unable to minimise a maximised window

So previously with the Snap Assist I was able to hold left click the toolbar as a maximised window and drag it down to minimise it, but now I can only maximise a minimised window like Google Chrome, why has this happened and how can I get this to work again?

Edit: Apparently I can do this with the tabs in Google Chrome, but not the actual window itself..

Preferred Solution: Unable to minimise a maximised window

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My pal has a laptop (Vista) that I have set up a Gmail account for him. Have put a shortcut on his desktop. When you open Gmail in Int. Explorer, it comes up every time in a narrow minimised window. I drag it to full screen and after use close it. Next and every time after it still opens in the narrow (horizontal) window. Any solutions?

Answer:Window Will Nor Stay Maximised

My windows just open at whatever size I last used them, but I've read elsewhere that if you hold the 'ctrl' key while clicking close, it will force Windows to remember the size and position. Worth a try.

When I go to a site the window opens minimised (well, whatever size I have made that window) and have to click on the 'max' button to get the full page.
Is there a setting so that when I open a site it opens as 'max' every time ??
Many thanks.

When I click on I.E. it loads up 'max'd' the first time, but all other sites then only open minimised and then have to click on the 'max' button to get full size.

Answer:Window in I.E.6 don't open maximised..

When the (2nd) min window opens don't click max, just drag to max then when closed should open as max.

One of the problems that has always bugged me since I got the internet.
Is there a setting so that when you open a new Internet Explorer window (Ctrl-N) it will:

-be maximised
-have the status bar on the bottom

I have XP and IE 6

Not a killer problem, but it can get annoying after the 4 millionth time.

Thanks for your help!

HiUsing Windows 2000, when I right-clicked a webpage link and selected 'Open in new Window' the page always used to open maximised. Now though it opens 'restore down' which is the opposite to maximised. I can't find how to reset this but I seem to remember there is no simple setting to enable the new window to be opened maximised. Is there a simple setting to enable the new windows to be opened maximised? It's getting fustrating having to click on the maximise button each time I open a new window this way.ThanksKevin

I think if you click right on the edges and drag it to the size you want, it will stay that way.

Click on links and small window opens. Drag window to full screen then close (X) holding shift key and without holding shift key and the window re-opens small again. Went to Tools>Internet Options>Advanced> "Accessabilty" and the "Reset zoom level to 100%" box is checked. Any ideas on what next to try?

Answer:Solved: IE 7 window will not open maximised

Are you closing ALL IE7 windows? The window size is only saved when you close the last window.

It should work with just clicking close, but try CTRL + the X button. If that doesn't work, try using File | Close while holding CTRL and/or Shift (Press F10 to display the menu bar)

I don't know what I've done, but when I maximise my Internet Explorer window now, the window is slightly offset. The window is set down about half an inch lower than normal. This means that I can see the top of the desktop above the window & the bottom of the window disappears off the screen. I can't even see the status bar when I activate it. I thought it might have been caused by spyware but running Ad-aware hasn't solved the probelm. How can I rectify this now? Thanks in advance.

Answer:Maximised IE window slightly offset

Close all but one IE window. Click the Restore Down button (just to the left of the X). Drag the sides of the window to fill the screen. File/Close (not the X).

Today I came to realise I have used the Seven Forums site so often over the past few years I felt I needed to put a bit back in. Nothing fancy though just a word on a problem I had earlier today.

Today I have visited the forum to see if I can:

'Open maximised' the one application I have that will not open with its window maximised.

It seems I am not the only Windows user who gets irritated with unusual behaviour from applications.

I have come to learn that the stubborn applications I speak of are rare, but end up causing such irritation precisely because almost every other application opens in the desired state of maximised, so they really are singled out.

In most situations, I find accessing the Properties for a 'shortcut to an application' and selecting 'Run Maximised' does the job, but there is always one or two applications where this does not work.

My solution for this has always been to have the application open, whatever it may be (say AutoCAD for example) and right click the task bar and select to show windows stacked, or side by side, shut the application down, and upon reopening, it always reopens in the same maximised state.

However, if like me you have dual monitors, and your task bar is at the bottom of your left monitor and set to auto-hide, then when right clicking on the task bar as it is displayed to get to the 'stacked/side by side' options, some stubborn applications take the taskbar screen space into account. So every time the application ... Read more

Some programs I use need to have hints, or tips, shown. A debugger is the most important example for me but for my customers it is the apps I develop. If I maximize a window then hints are turned off as though I'm in tablet mode which I am not.
It seems as though maximized windows in W10 are treated as though you are in tablet mode.

Anyone know how to get hints t show in a maximized window?

Answer:Show hints (tooltips) for maximised window in windows 10

Are you sure the window in question isn't being treated as 'on top'? (That's a feature you need a 3rd party program to expose as far as I know).

Perhaps you can specify the program you're having problems with.

There's nothing in task manager that jumps out at me as not supposed to be there (but then even the system processes tend not to have obvious names that tell you what they are) and it stays on top of everything else waiting for you to click the accept button (the only button). How can we be rid of this, and more to the point, why are programs allowed to behave like this? Surely this sort of behaviour should be reserved for OS processes only?

Legend, if you can identify the name of the process that's launching that pesky window then you should be able to uninstall or disable the program. Have a read of my first post on this thread for instructions.
Hopefully that rogue program doesn't open in a maximised window - if it doesn't then you can simply drag it out of the way to allow you to carry out the diagnostics.

I did a fresh install of Windows yesterday and for the first first few reboots, all Aero features were working fine (once I had installed my Nvidia drivers, of course). But for some reason now, a few of the features are broken.

If I for example click the File Explorer shortcut on the superbar, it doesn't open with a cool effect, it just "appears" simply - as if I'm using Aero Basic. Aero Snap works, but the sort of "pulse" or "circle" effect you get around the mouse pointer, doesn't appear. Also when I minimize a window, it simply disappears, instead of the cool effect it usually is.

And yet, Aero Peek works, as does the "Win Key + Tab" window selection AND the full Aero Glass / Transparency effects.

I've already looked under "Adjust performance" settings, Windows had already select all of the Aero effects for me, the only unticked thing was "Save taskbar thumbnail previews".

I've also already ran the Aero troubleshooter with no success.

My WEI is 7.4 and my specs are as follows:
Intel Core i7 3770K
128GB SSD (1.5TB HDD)
8GB RAM (1600Mhz)
Nvidia GTX 560Ti

At first I thought this could be due to my manual setting of the page file (a low 512MB minimum 1024MB maximum) however I can confirm that letting Windows manage my page file again (and rebooting afterwards) has not solved the problem.

It's very annoying having a half-baked Aero experience and I hope you can help me with it.

I've tried increasing the title bar size but this doesn't make much difference. The high contrast theme does provide more contrast for these icons but the rest of the display is too weird.

How can I can configure these icons to display with more contrast? There must be registry tweak since they can be displayed in high contrast using the high contrast theme.

Have you performed a full scan for malware or virus's with a good Antivirus and Malwarebytes? An annoyance program ( malware or gag program ) could be crafted to set window priority so that taking away the priority from where you are at with a window that is say far off in the corner off the screen from view etc.My thoughts are that something like this is stealing the focus on you. There are a bunch of programs out there that a friend could even add to your system to drive you crazy etc such as drunken mouse etc where you try to select stuff and it is not very cooperative etc. So if anyone else uses this system check with them to see if they are playing a gag on you etc.If the Window you are in though fades and it says instead that the program is no longer responding then its a totally different issue than a gag program etc. Do you get any program is no longer responding issues?

Answer:IE6 Opening not maximised

Open an IE window which contains a link, click that link to open the second window. **DRAG** this second window to the size you wish (maximised), then minimise it to the taskbar using the - in the top righthand corner. This will leave you looking at the original window containing the link you clicked, close this original window using the x is the top righthand corner. Now restore the dragged window from the taskbar and close it using the x in the top righthand corner. From now on your windows should open at the size you dragged that window to.

I know you can use Vistaglazz , but I don't like it.Is there some sort of registry hack of some sort?

Answer:Use Aero In Maximised Windows

I cant take all the credit for this but i think i have a way to maximize glass so here goes. open up your aero.msstyles file with resource hacker and click on variant then click on normal then click on 1033. save the 1033 file as a binary file. now open up winhex or any other binary file program that you use and go down to line 00023c43 and find the first set of letters "ff" . simply change those to "00." You can also go to 00023c40 and on that line find the firsti instance of "ff". save your new binary file. now go back to resource hacker and go back to variant, normal, 1033 and replace the 1033 with the one you just made on winhex. place your modified msstyles file in your aero theme and bam! maximized windows with glass baby!!! i posted this on aeroxp yesterday and you can see screenshots there if u like.

I just did a fresh Vista Ultimate 32bit install and I can't get WMP to open in a normal window(which it is set to run as in the shortcut properties).

If I 'un-maximise' it and make the window the size I want it, close it, then
re-open it the program is maximised again. (I have checked to make sure that WMP has actually closed in task manager.)

I've tried taking it out of full mode, into compact mode and also tried putting it in skin mode but as soon as I re-open, it is maximised again.

I have also tried toggling the 'Fit video to player on resize' and 'fit player to video on start' options with no luck.

I have also tried uninstalling divx & xvid codecs.
Being a new install I have the latest graphics & motherboard drivers installed.

The solution appears to be somewhere in the shortcut line;
"C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe" /Prefetch 1 /Task:NowPlaying ---Opens WMP 11 in the window size I last used but on the Library Pane.

"C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe" /prefetch:1 /Task:NowPlaying ---Opens on the now playing tab but once again it is maximised and doesn't remember the size or place it was when I closed it.

I had this problem last time I installed vista and must have solved it by just copying & pasting the shortcut link but it seems there are different ones available.

If anyone has a solution it would be much appreciated as it is driving me mad.

Wonder if anyone could throw some light on this problem.

I have just tried to open Windows Internet explorer 5 in a "not full size" window and it shrinks itself to an icon, randomly placed in one of the corners of the screen. It will not display other than full size.

My Java and ActiveX where and are turned off. Uninstalling IE5 and reinstalling has not helped.

Is there a registry edit I can do to return IE5 to its former self. Wiping the hard drive is not an option.

Would be very grateful for any help.

If you are launching IE from a shortcut, right click on that and select "properties". In the "run" field, select "normal window".

Also close out IE completely and run regedit

Navigate to the key:

With the folder "main" highlighted on the left, look for the value Window_Placement in the Right hand pane and Right click on that and delete it.

Hi Guys, have a problem I can't seem to work out or find a solution for, on my new dell any time I maximise a window it won't maximise the buttons all the way to the top as you can see in the picture. It doesn't matter which program it is, iTunes, chrome, folders, everything has the buttons about 5mm from the top of the screen. Does anyone know of any solution to this issue. Resolution set to 1920x1080 if that's any help.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Maximised windows not all the way to top of screen (annoying)

Have you tried to drag the program to the top of the screen, that should maximise it to fill the screen.

I have a 27 inch Dell screen and with Vista when I opened a page in IE8 it would fill the screen but since upgrading to Windows 7 I have to manually expand the page to fit the screen. It is annoying!

Answer:How can I get IE8 pages to open maximised in Win7

Right-click your IE shortcut/icon and click "Properties". Under the "Shortcut" tab, there is a drop-down menu named "Run". Choose "Maximized". Apply. OK.

A little niggle, but it is driving me nuts! When I open IE from my tool bar I get a full screen window (good). However, when I'm looking at a web page and want to open a link in a new page (by right click and 'open in new window') it always opens as a small little box that I then need to resize/ maximise (bad). The strange thing is that sometimes the size and position of the opening window changes ...but I've no idea what I did to make it happen. Any thoughts people?

Hi all,

I was wondering, is there a way of adding perhaps a command parameter to the target option in a shortcut, so that when I click on the shortcut, whatever it is opening, it opens it maximised?

For example, adding a line such as -Open Maximized onto the end of the target parameter?

I have a tablet pc which I run NOT in tablet mode, but as a regular desktop pc.

When I open an Explorer window (from the shortcut on the taskbar or by WinKey+E on the (soft) keyboard), it always opens it maximised. I can subsequently restore it down to a better size, but I want to open windows in their 'restored down' status.

I have done the View>Options>View>Apply-to-folders thing, but it doesn't help.

On other machines, it works properly, but not this one machine.

1) I'm talking about Explorer windows, not app windows (which are fine), so I guess (an inversion of) this doesn't apply. Is there anyway to open fullscreen windows by default?

2) I read that Cnrl + RedXClick (??Win8?) might be a solution, but I can't do that with only a soft keyboard.

System W98SE IE v6.0 SP1When using IE I frequently right click on a link to open it in a new window. That window was normally smaller and one needed to click the Maximize button to cover the whole screen. In February I took the advice of VOG click here in his post of 08/02/04 @ 21:11 hrs and from then on my windows have opened fully maximised. However two days ago IE suddenly reverted to opening windows at less than maximum. I repeated VOG's method which then worked until the next re-boot when it again reverted to less than maximum. This has now happened three times. If VOG is on line can he, or anyone else, please tell me if there is a means to stabilise this setting so that windows ALWAYS open fully maximised?

My friend uses MS Works (version 8 or 8.5, I imagine, as her computer is a little over a year old) on a Vista operating system. When starting its word processor in whatever form, using a shortcut or from the Start menu, for example, the word processor fills part of the screen only. The maximise button has no effect. The bottom edge can be dragged to the bottom of the screen, but the side edges cannot be dragged left or right in the same way. Every attempt to obtain a full screen image has failed. This applies to the word processor only and has only recently occurred; the spreadsheet continues to open properly, for example.

My browser (Both IE and Firefox) automatically flicks between maximised (or minimised) and full screen (i.e. F11) The only way I can get it to stop is to hammer escape or F11. I use a logitech wireless keyboard and sometimes if I press the 'connect' button on the back then the problem is temporarily solved, but not always and never for very long.I have tried replacing the batteries but this has made no difference. Any ideas? Its driving me insane!

Answer:Browser flicks between maximised and full screen

Could be a sticking button, has anything been spilt on the keyboard? Switch it off, turn it up side down and give it a few positive thumbs to clean out any debris. An air duster or vacuum cleaner can also be deployed. Do you have a wired keyboard so you can see if it happens with that?

Is this at all possible?

For example, i have a video stream open on one of my monitors, mute and maximise it and proceed to use another screen, on current settings the video will go back to normal size in the browser window
Is it possible to keep it maximised while muted and working on another monitor?

Thanks for any help

Answer:Keeping flash player maximised while muted?

That all depends. Is this within a browser or a video you have on your PC? If within a browser where is the video being streamed from? Is it a video service like You Tube that has various controls within the video window itself or some other service like NetFlix that just plays within the browser?

Several games I play will minimise after playing for a while. The screen goes black, the monitor shuts off briefly and I am unable to open the game again (crashes, but a little grey bar appears at the top right of the screen with the game name displayed), but I can hear the game music/sfx in the background. I've had this issue with Fallout4 Man'o'war Cosair and Savage Lands. I've had this issue before with a previous graphics card (Nvidia GT250). I've checked the file integrity via SFC and no issues were encountered. My graphics drivers are all up to date. There doesn't seem to be another program trying to open up. Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Games minimise and crashing.

The GPU times out. There's a registry setting you can use to extend the timeout period. I've run into this a few times, but cannot for the life of me think of what it is called right now.

OK, found that pretty quick.

Run regedit to launch the registry editorNavigate to the following location:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDriversIf the TdrDelay key doesn't already exist, create it with type REG_DWORD (Even on a 64-bit OS)The value represents the timeout threshold in seconds. I believe the default is 2. Try 5 for starters, you can increase it if you need to.Reboot.

Hi Guys,

Great new look forum.

I am using Windows 7 Prof and have a question about how to turn off auto minimising.

I don't know how to describe it but it's so annoying.

If I have a browser open for instance and click on say options it briefly shows then minimises itself to the taskbar, I then hover over it and click on it it opens but then minimises again, It's driving me mad.

I think it may be some new way for W7 to work but have done searches and can't find the answer.

Does anyone know why this happens and is there a way to disable it.

Thanks for any help.

For the members of MT that use their own hosting/email provider ,do you deploy spf and/or dkim and DMARC(curious to learn the policy deployed) to reduce spam levels?

I personally have already deployed Dmarc on my domain with reject as policy.

Answer:How do you minimise email spam?

I use Google Mail and the spam filter works perfectly fine for me so I do not need to do anything additional myself, I almost always never receive any spam into my main Inbox... I only find e-mails which I actually need there. However, if I go into my actual Spam folder, there'll be tons of course... The filter works well for me.

Then again, I only bother reading e-mails I am expecting. If you e-mail me and I wasn't expecting it then it simply won't be read.

Does anybody know how I can get a "minimise all" shortcut on my desktop (or quick launch bar), rather than using the "Show Desktop" icon? i.e. I want a shortcut that performs the action of pressing Win+M.

I know that if I wanted to get a "Show Desktop" icon I'd create a new text document and type:

and save it as .scf but this isn't what I'm after...

Answer:Minimise All Desktop Shortcut?

OK, i went through all the possibilities as creating a vbs script which could launch a scf file, then open sidebar.exe.
Though it worked fine i was not really satisfied with the method as it uses a trick vs the Windows Key + M which uses the system.
Then i remembered that i had the shell apllications commands somewhere, did not find them but remembered some simple commands and just wrote this very small vbs script which seems to work fine.

Open Notepad, copy/paste these lines:

Dim WshShell
Set shell = wscript.CreateObject("Shell.Application")

Save as ShowDesktop.vbs for example, anywhere on your hdd.

Then create a shortcut on your desktop which refers to the vbs file, name it Show Desktop, change the icon to one of those that you can find in explorer.exe (or the icon of your choice in any library) and put this shortcut in your quick launch bar and delete the original one (you could put it back whenever you want).
That's all!

Hope it helps.

This is a weird one.

I have a PC which boots up okay and I can double click on any icon, they open and when I minimise them they minimise. When I start Internet Explorer it all works fine with other icons maximising and minimising as they should. However when I close Internet Explorer I can't click on any icons and when I select them from the Start, Programs menu they start but won't minimise.

I have no idea why this is happening as it's a brand new XP build on an old PC.

Any thoughts?

I have been using Office 2010 quite happily on a laptop with Windows 7 but cannot get Word 2010 to work on my Windows XP SP3 machine.

All the other Office 2010 applications work OK and most of Word works.

What I cannot do is minimise or close a document using the top right hand boxes.

If I click any of them Word freezes and I have to use Task Manager to close the application.

I can close it by using the File > Exit route.

I have completely removed all versions of Office from the XP through 2003 and 2007 versions that were on the machine.
I then ran a regedit search and removed all references I could find to Office.

I then ran CCleaner to scan for errors and cleaned the registry.

Then I cleaned the registry with the registry cleaner from UniBlue.

Then I did a clean install of Office 2010

Problem exactly the same.

It's not a show stopper but makes for inconvenience as I like to move open documents to a second screen or to shrink them so I can see other documents from which I need text.

Any assistance will be gratefully received although as I travel often please forgive me if I am slow to respond.
