T470p black screen on resume from sleep after September Lenovo updates

Question: T470p black screen on resume from sleep after September Lenovo updates

Two days ago I installed the Windows 10 cumulative update, and the Lenovo Companion September updates for the power management driver, hotkey features, and BIOS.This is with Win10 Pro, UltraDock, and DP monitor. Since then my machine no longer wakes up, or at least it wakes up, but the screen stays black, the notebook screen is black, the DP screen turns on but stays black.I have to hold power to do a cold boot. Any ideas which update is the casue, and how I recover?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I've been reading around this seem to be a fairly common issue. I've got an older pc with a Core 2 duo e6600 on an nforce 2 680i SLI board. That system was running Vista for years without any issues other than Vista is bloatware. I decided to upgrade that system to Windows 8 and now I'm experiencing issues with sleep and hibernate.

Basically I get one of the following situations:

Fast start up enabled results in the PC shutting of the monitor/display when attempting to shutdown, but never actually powering down. The system remains running and moving the mouse or pressing a key on the keyboard turns the display back on. Also sleep and hibernate exhibits the same behavior.

Fast start up disabled results in the PC shutting down correctly, but obviously can't use the benefits of it. Sleep and hibernate however now properly send the pc into low power/standby mode, BUT when attempting to resume from this state, its results in a black screen while the pc is powered up. I have to hard reset to get display functional again.

With Fast Startup and Hybrid power mode disabled in the power options shutdown works normally, the pc goes into powered down sleep mode, but when attempting to resume, it powers up for about 2 seconds then shuts down completely, requiring a full power up.

Anyone have a clue how to fix this?

powercfg energy isn't coming back with any requests that are interfering with sleep and it worked perfectly fine on Vista before. What gives?

Hey all,

I'm having trouble figuring out what is the problem with this system:

HP Pavilion a1130n with a PNY Nvidia Quadro FX 1400 graphics card installed.

I've just installed the graphics card and it seems to be causing problems when trying to resume from sleep. It boots fine, and hibernation (S3?) works fine too... just not sleep (S1?).

I've tried the latest drivers from Nvidia (258.8*), didn't help. I found an old HP driver (197.97) that seems to work just as well (if not better, which I'll be double checking after I post this) and another older driver from PNY (258.57). They all exhibit the same problem... black screen after trying to resume from sleep.

When trying to resume from sleep, the computer powers on (you can hear the fans and everything) just no video signal to the screen.

I checked PNY system requirements for the card, and it says a 350W power supply is required, which this computer only has 300W PSU which is probably 5-7 years old. My question is: Do you think a too small power supply could be the culprit for these kinds of symptoms? If so, wouldn't/shouldn't a too small PSU also cause problems on startup, resume from hibernate, and during operation?

I'm having a problem where if my laptop is idle and the screen goes black, I can't get it to resume. I try moving the mouse and hitting buttons, but nothing happens. I have to completely shut the PC off and start it again. Also, if I put it to sleep, the same thing happens (it goes black but doesn't sleep or resume). My drivers are all up to date but it still happens.

Please help if you can. Installed Windows 8 Pro clean install just kept my files. Now, every time I resume from sleep it hangs at a black screen for what seems like ever. Only way to start is to hold power button to turn off then restart it. Any help would be great. Thank you so much. Not sure if I posted this in the correct area but wasn't sure where to put it. Thanks.

Have you installed all your vendors drivers for things like video card, chipset, usb, audio, etc?

Have you made sure you have the most recent BIOS for your computer?

Hi Issue: Thinkpad X1 Carbon 5th Gen black screen / 'screen off' on resume from sleep I know this issue has been posted about several times regarding the X1 series but .... none of those threads seem to have any kind of answer to this problem. This seems like quite a horrendous issue for a +£1500 to have !! Constantly 'hard rebooting' and losing all my open work is seriously seriously annoying. Please note: My drivers are 100% up to date based on Lenovo's own update software. I have all official Windows 10 updates issued to date (21 aug 17). These are the patterns I've noticed: - It doesn't always replicate the same behaviour: after resume from sleep sometimes it's 'black' and other times it's fine. I'd say 66% of the 'lid openings' it's OK but 33% of cases it's not.- I've found that if I shut the lid again and reopen (often 3 or more times and waiting 30+ seconds on each open then 30+ seconds on each close) then I can eventually 'force' it to turn the screen on.- If I 'manually' set the unit to sleep from the start menu rather than just closing the lid, I'm pretty certain that it *does not* exhibit this problem. I'll be 100% certain once I've tried this a few more times.-  I've removed all USB devices from the laptop one-by-one and waited for the problem to reoccur thus ruling out any single or combination of USB devices.- I have the 'lock screen' shown when it does successfully resume from sleep. - The screen 'blackness' looks t... I have a Lenovo Z51-70.  Sometimes the screen stays black when you lift the lid up. I know that a lot of other people have had this problem.  HDMI out shows the machine has booted.  Rebooting the machine clears the problem until the next time.  Windows 10, fully patched.  I have the latest Bios, and both of the latest graphics drivers. Can someone point me at a systematic guide, of the 'first try this, then try this' type? Regards, Stephen

Answer:Lenovo Z51-70 sometimes black screen after sleep

Hello StephenB-2000Thanks for using the Lenovo forums.Try to download the Chipset drivers for the unit from the support page.
Make sure to reboot after an update on the unit.
Also, Try a static discharge for this, it may help to resolve the issue or at least get rid of any built up static on the motherboard.(If the battery is internal, please just skip the remove/replace battery steps.)1. Turn the unit off2. Remove the battery and the Mains adapter3. Press and hold the front power button for 30 seconds4. Replace the battery and the Mains adapter5. Turn the unit on as normal
See if this is able to help at all, let us know how you get on.==================================================================================Did someone help you today? Thank them with a Kudo! If you find a post helpful and it answers your question, please mark it as an "Accepted Solution"!

Hi The laptop was working perfectly until i updated the intel HD graphics driver to version (27/10/17).  As soon as I did this, the machine would not wake from either sleep or hibernate mode when the lid was shut. When I open the lid it will either enter staright into a black screen, and I can hear the fan spinning with lights to the right hand side but no further activity. Sometimes the Lenovo log appears on the screen first and then enters into a blank screen state. I am on Bios Lenovo C6CN34WW 29/10/15 As soon as I press and hold the power button to turn off, and then turn on again the machine loads into windows perfectly, with a visible display.  Any suggestions how to fix this? Thanks

Answer:lenovo g480 black screen after updates

Hi Jobe12,
Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
I?m sorry to hear that your G480 Laptop is not booting to Windows and displaying black screen, I suggest you to perform the Flee-Power and BIOS reset. Below are the steps to check and resolve the issue:

Remove the battery and any other peripheral device connected to the computer.
Hold the power button for 10-15 seconds and then connect only the AC Adapter and try to turn ON the computer.
If the issue persists even after performing Flee Power then resetting BIOS to its defaults should resolve the issue
Now to access BIOS menu press the NOVO button which is located beside the power button after turning OFF the computer.
Then select the BIOS utility option to enter BIOS.
To reset the BIOS to its defaults click on ?F9? Key and select YES.
Now click on ?F10? Key to save the changes that are done in BIOS, the computer should automatically restart. Please check if the issue persists.

Hope this helps!!!
Do post us back if the issue still persists.
Best Regards

Shiva Kumar

Hello all, to start here is my system configuration:
i7 2600k
sli GTX580
8gb 1600 ddr3
Win7 64bit
1TB WD HDD 6gb/s
Asus p8z68 deluxe

Every time I resume from standby, my desktop "freezes". For example, Msi Afterburner's graphs aren't moving and task bar icons like Avast freeze in animation. Opening any Windows based window like "my computer" opens a window with normal border and bar with the minimize, maximize, exit buttons, however the contents of the window are black. Right click menus appear normal for a split second and then go completely black. The start menu is blank with no buttons at all. Despite right click menus and the start menu being black, it will still respond to the desired action when i click where the button should be within the blackness.
Now, I am suspecting nvidia drivers because with driver 347.88, there is no issue. When updating to a newer version, this issue started. I rolled back to 347.88 and waited a while for newer drivers thinking it could just be an issue with the current release, however after updating to 353.30, the issue persists. However I am unable to confirm if the driver itself is at fault or something else is interfering.
To resolve this issue I restart the machine. I have no issues running games after a reboot and the issue does not occur under any other circumstances other than resuming from standby. Even when it is acting up, I am able to load firefox(for example) and browse the internet.
I have the latest chips... Read more

Dear Forum, I have a new Lenovo Z50-75 with FreeDOS - I made a Windows 8.1 installation, and all went fine. After installing the around 70 updates - at one point it reboots and I get a black screen, right after shortly seeing the Lenovo Logo ( entering BIOS works ). It is not booting Windows at all - I can not enter Safe Mode therefore, and I do not get any cursor.  The behaviour is reproduceable, done this 2 times. Also when it hangs in the black screen, the van get reall busy, lound and the notebook gets hot.  Anyone run into that issue, or has an idea what do do?  Thank you,Robert

Answer:Lenovo G770 Fan not spinning up after resume from sleep or hibernate

Hey Abdul,
Welcome back.   If the fan runs normally on first boot until you suspend / resume, then I might imagine this is power management quirk, or something confused in the embedded controller.
1) Try going into BIOS and reload defaults - this might refresh values there.
2) Try uninstall / reinstall power management driver and the energy cut software (Idea power manager).
Did you recently update BIOS or drivers?
I would also try some temp monitoring software just to see how CPU temps run after you come back from sleep to see if the fan should be running.

Hello, dear forumers, I have a problem with my Lenovo B580 laptop that they couldn't fix even at the authorized service center. I have no sound after booting up, but the sound always works if I put the computer to sleep (NOT hibernate) and then resume. This problem persists both on Windows and Ubuntu Linux (though a fresh install of Ubuntu did have sound for the first 2 - 3 bootups). It is getting very annoying and nobody seems to know how to fix this. Do you have any suggestions or ideas for me? Sure would be grateful. Imagine having to sleep and resume EVERY time you boot up...

Since there is no Win 7 Power driver supplied for N500 on regular download page, Create a Windows restore point first, in case this does not work, or Setup does not auto create a restore point. Install the System Interface driver found on THIS Lenovo beta download page first. Install the Power Manager driver found on same page. (Extract the zip files and run Setup.)

Windows 10 home with the anniversary update and all updates since on a Toshiba laptop.
When I boot up from a complete shutdown, I get a wallpaper (1) on the screen and after I press enter the login screen appears with its wallpaper image.
But, when I resume by lifting the laptop lid the screen that appears is dark (no wallpaper) and only the time and date present. I do not mind the time and date on the pre-login screen, but how do I get a wallpaper instead of the black background?

Answer:No wallpaper on resume from sleep screen

Hi, try Settings, Personalisation, Lock Screen.

Note that the lock screen from restart is treated in some ways differently to the lock screen related to sleep. (The first you can't disable, the second you can) but how this relates to what picture is shown, I don't know.

I have been encountering blue screens intermittently when my new computer resumes from sleep. The computer will typically come out of sleep and allow me to interact for maybe 10 or 20 seconds then freeze up and display the blue screen. At that point, if I hit the power once it powers down completely (which I haven't encountered before-- I usually needed to force the computer to shut down by holding down the power button on my old computer.)

The odd thing is that when I power the computer back up, it goes through the standard boot screens for the BIOS, however, rather than asking about going into safe mode due to the blue screen, it acts as if it's waking up from sleep. All of my programs from before the blue screen are active and the computer is functional (though the last time it slowed to a crawl until I rebooted).

I built this computer because I was tired of getting sleep related blue screens on my last one (which turned out to be a graphics card that was too big for the power supply). I'm hoping this is something simple at this point, like a missing driver, but if so I'm not sure what it is.

hello, Im very satisfied user of thinkpad x220, i bought it right after it came out around begining of may 2011.After a few months my thinkpad died (endless loop of blinking lights, no thinkpad logo etc) I sent it to repair, they replaced the motherboard(it was around september as i remember). Everything was ok till i found the crappy ips screen and as we all know the famous ghosting problem, I was very sad after i found that my polish lenovo department wont replace my ips screen cuz "they dont know anything about problem", but ok i can live with that. Few days ago i wanted to try new windows 8 as my company is a part of msdn program and we have copies for a while, before installing new windows 8 i upgraded my bios to newest 1.33 version. I bought a top of the line XPS 15 9550, with 1TB M.2 SSD, 4k touchscreen and 16GB of RAM. Had frequent blue screens of death that I fixed by replacing the SSD drivers with the Samsung ones.
Now my biggest woes are that quite often the speakers crack and that I cannot put the laptop in standby/sleep.
If I have the power supply plugged in and I put the laptop to sleep, when I wake it up from sleep the internal keyboard no longer works. The keyboard backlights react to my typing but windows doesn't see me typing anything. Even the CAPS LOCK led doesn't light up if I try to toggle that key. Luckily if I connect an external keyboard, that one works.
If I don't have the power supply plugged in and I put the laptop to sleep, when I try to wake it up from sleep, it instead tries to boot and complains about a missing loader file. At that point if I plug it in and I hit retry it proceeds with the rest of the boot but of course since this is a fresh boot all of my work prior to attempting to go into standby is lost.
Please advise.
thank you!

My laptop is a Samsung NP880Z5E. Runs a i7-3635 processor. Came with dual graphics chips: Intel HD4000 and AMD Radeon 8700. The computer, when bought new, was running Windows 8.1, but has been running Windows 10 for months. Currently running Windows 10 version 1607.

On January 14th the sleep function, which had been working perfectly since the computer was bought, including while on Windows 10, stopped working. The computer seems to go to sleep when I close the lid or click the power button, as I have it set up to do, but when I open the lid or click the power button to bring the machine out of sleep, the power light comes back on solid and the fan starts back up, but the screen stays dark. If I leave the computer alone, after about two minutes the computer will boot up, but not from the sleep state, it performs a complete reboot.

Here are some things I have tried, in no particular order:

- Made sure the "upgrade" results show that I have the latest and greatest updates for the computer
- Using device manager have uninstalled and re-installed what Samsung and the updater say are the "latest" drivers for my computers' configuration of the two graphics cards. Have also tried the truly latest drivers for the graphics card from Intel and AMD although to use the absolute latest Intel driver requires a manual and not automatic installation.
- Tried having the hibernate file on and tried having it off using the powercfg \h on or off command
- Hybrid sleep i... Read more

I'm using Ubuntu Linux 14.04 on a Lenovo IdeaPad S205. When I resume from suspend-to-RAM, fan goes on but screen stays off. The computer does not respond to anything except a hard shutdown (press and hold the power button). I have done some debugging, but I don't know what conclusion to draw. Any ideas based on the results below? All commands are entered as root. dmesg_afterProcedure:# echo mem > /sys/power/state; dmesg > dmesg_afterResult:Like usual, black on resume. Importantly, no dmesg_after file is created. pm_testProcedure:# echo freezer > /sys/power/pm_test# echo mem > /sys/power/stateRepeat above and subsitute freezer with devices, platform, processors and core. Result:Resumes fine.Without XProcedure:At boot, press ESC to enter GRUB menuEdit first entry, edit kernel ... line, append rw init=/bin/bash, and bootIn the shell, repeat pm_test proceduresResult:Same as with X. With freezer, devices, platform, processors or core in /sys/power/pm_test, resume works fine. Otherwise, resume gives black screen of death. No dmesg_after file is created. Latest kernelProcedure:Install latest kernel according to the Kernel/MainlineBuilds Ubuntu Wiki page (3.16.0-031600rc5)Reboot with new kernel, with or without XRepeat the "dmesg_after" testResult:Same as with current stable kernel (3.13.0-32-generic).

Answer:bsod, black screen when resume

Lot's of video errors in MSINFO32 - STOP 0x116, 0x117 and 0x9F in dxgkrnl.sys

But the first point is that you have an outdated Sony Firmware Extension Parser driver (from 2007). Older versions of this have been known to cause BSOD's on Win7 systems due to incompatibility. Please download and install the latest version from the Sony website here: Sony eSupport - VPCF1190X - Drivers & Software

Then, download and install this video driver from the nVidia website: NVIDIA DRIVERS 275.33 WHQL

Monitor for further BSOD's...

Other things to do:
- follow the steps at this link to troubleshoot the video errors: STOP 0x116: VIDEO_TDR_ERROR troubleshooting - Windows 7 Forums

Update these outdated drivers:
- Create a System Restore Point prior to doing any of this. DO NOT mess with the drivers themselves - leave the Windows\System32\drivers directory alone unless we specifically direct you to it!
- Please update these drivers from the device manufacturer's website - or uninstall them from your system. Reference links are included below.
- DO NOT use Windows Update or the Update Drivers function of Device Manager.
- Please feel free to post back about any drivers that you are having difficulty locating.
- Windows Update exceptions may be noted below for Windows drivers:

Hey, everyone, I bought my Inspiron 15 7567 a few months ago and absolutely love it. I've had no problems with it until yesterday when I "woke" it from sleep: I opened the monitor and was greeted with a heavily distorted screen, seen below.
This has never happened before, and part of me thinks it may have something to do with a system update that I recently downloaded and installed. my guess is there's a bug in the latest Dell update that causes this to happen.
Has anybody here experienced this before, and how were you able to resolve this?

More than half of the time, the screen of my x200s remains black after resume (whether from suspend or hibernation). The moon goes out, the disk drive led flickers a bit then goes out, but nothing appears. I try to make it wake up with all the fn keys, to no avail. I have to reboot several times a day. I tried updating Power Center and power driver, and install all the updates related to the screen or the bios, but it didn't help. Any suggestions or ideas ? Thanks,Jean-Louis Leroy

I hope that this post ends some frustrations for some people.I hope that IBM deals with this issue by getting ATI to fix the video driver issue. After three months of tracking down blue screens when resuming from Sleep Mode and some lockups while working, I have identified the problem on my T60 Type 2623 running Windows XP-Pro and all service packs and updates.  The Sleep Mode resume issues were intermittant and it would be fine for a day or two and then reboot on Resume or reboot every time I used Resume for a while.  For months the Blue Screen would reboot and attempt to send the message to Microsoft using the logs, but the logs were always corrupted.  I disabled every driver that I could and the problem continued for months. The problem solution came about when I decided to try my Rhapsody Music account after many months of not using it.  I kept getting a message about DRM (Digital Right Management) being disabled and Rhapsody software could not self-fix this.  So I finally called Rhapsody and they spent over an hour with me trying to get Rhapsody to work.  The support person asked me about my computer and I noted that it was an IBM T60.  He then asked about my Video Card and I responded that it was an ATI Mobility Radeon X1300.  After a few minutes on hold he asked about my driver version which was 8.442.3-080103a1-057754C the set from January 31, 2008.  He noted that there is a known problem wit the 8.4 driver a... I am experiencing similar problems with my X200T 7448CTO w/doc + IBM T86 monitor + Thinkpad Ultranav keyboard + thinkpad USB travel mouse and all Lenovo/MSFT updates. When doc'd (which is most of the time), it awakens from forced sleep (Fn4) sometimes, but sometimes none of the input devices (external mouse/keyboard or internal track/keyboard) will cause a wakeup. When that has occurred, the only solution has been a forced shutdown and restart. The restart has been normal after the usual warnings about being closed improperly.  Hi all,First post!  My Dad's Lenovo laptop goes to a black screen when starting up, so is unusable.I haven't seen it in the flesh yet but have started to research things for him and have found that 'black screen' shows up quite a lot for Windows 10 and Lenovo PCs! We were so impressed with my Dad's PC I've ended up with the same model myself:Lenovo YOGA 500 Convertible Laptop, Intel Core i7, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, 15.6" Touch Screen. Also labelled as: Yoga 500-15IBD Laptop (ideapad)  I see some people mentioning hardware failures and others device driver problems with the graphic card etc. but haven't read a definite cause/fix for this so far. I've just found this recent critical BIOS update for this PC which mentions the black screen problem:Software name: BDCN63WW Version 63[Important updates] Fix Win 10 lid close black screen issue. haven't seen this mentioned in the forums? Has anyone else used this?If the PC always boots to a black screen I'll obviously have trouble installing this! I'm hoping that it will boot in Safe Mode or I'm going to have some trouble installing it?! I don't know whether to install the BIOS update on my own machine which is running fine - I think I'll wait until I see my Dad's laptop first which will be in a few weeks. Has anyone had any experience of this BIOS update or other comments on this?Thanks. &nb... I'm still wondering about this... I've just updated the Lenovo Companion after seeing it mentioned in another thread. It looks like this s/w is supposed to scan the PC and recommend Lenovo updates - critical and nice to have ones. Initially the Companion was showing a critical update for Lenovo SHAREit and a recommended one for my BIOS. It says I'm currently on BDCN28WW and offered something like v61 and not the 63 I mentioned in my first post? After letting it update SHAREit and re-scanning the BIOS update is no longer being offered and still shows me on v28 ??? I'm not sure I trust this 'Companion' app!My laptop seems to be running fine so I don't want to break it updating the BIOS if it's not required. For all I know my Dad's broken one may be broken because it upgraded?! Does anyone else use/trust the Companion app?And has anyone else seen it change it's mind on recommended BIOS updates? Thanks.

Okay so I have noticed since I have disabled Hybrid Sleep, or it also possible with the Creators update that after I resume from sleep the lock screen will be black for a few secs then it will show my background picture.

Now I don't use a custom lock screen but one of the pre installed windows ones. Has anyone else got this and is there a way I can fix it?

I just installed windows 7. I am the only user of this computer, and have disabled the need to enter a password. But I want to get rid of the blue background with my picture, which needs to be clicked on to resume, every time my screen goes black (which happens if I don't use the computer for a few minutes, don't know what does this).

This is nuts. Why should I have this blue screen and need to clicfk my picture if I am the only possible user? I did delete an account with some funny name that I did not create, but I can not delete the administrator and guest accounts.

When I have to click my picture, it is the only picture.

Thanks for any help so I don't shoot my computer.

Answer:Stop clicking on picture to resume when screen goes black

I got rid of that by going to
Control Panel>Power Option>Require A Password on wakeup
and changing that setting down near the bottom.

Also, on the Power Options screen, you can change the Turn Off Display and Sleep settings if you don't want the screen going dark, by clicking Change Plan Settings.

This has been going on for a couple of months. When it first happened I could think of no new software that I had added recently.

I'm also getting a black screen on startup about 70% of the time. Messages: Primary hard disk drive 0 not found. Strike F1 key to continue, F2 to run Setup Utility. When I hit F1 key, the error message just repeats endlessly, have to reboot to get out. F2 does bring up the Setup Utility, but I have no idea what to do on that screen.

My system is 2 weeks old.  This Friday it started exhibiting unacceptable behavior.  After resuming from hibernate on 2518-AJU (i5, Optimus graphics, bios 1.34) I get a black screen entitled "windows resume loader" which says "The last attempt to resume the system from its previous location failed.  Attempt to resume again".  There are two choices: "continue with system resume" or "delete restoration data and proceed to system boot menu".  The behavior after choosing "continue with system resume" is inconsistent.   Sometimes it resumes fine, other times it proceeds to system boot menu and will only boot in safe mode, sometimes it boots fine from the boot menu.  This occurs after the system has been in hibernate mode for ~15 minutes or more. Installed an addition 4mb RAM for a total of 6mb.  The behavior started 8 days after the memory upgrade so I do not think it can be traced to the new memory. I ran a complete system diagnostics test, disabled the optimus graphics, disable AMT, disabled hibernation - rebooted and enabled hibernation. Any idea what is causing the resume failure in the first place? Thanks, Stu

I have a COMPAQ Presario M2000 laptop (Win XP with latest updates), 3yrs old, working fine till recently when it shut down 3-4 times showing the blue screen of death ( with white lettering saying something about memory dump etc).
Since then, after switching on , hear two BEEPs & can see the black screen with COMPAQ logo, then ‘Press F1 to resume and F10 to Enter SETUP” on top.
Nothing happens on pressing F1 or F10.
Have checked by replacing RAM, removing HDD, on battery only, on power only-but result is same!
A week of doing nothing later, I one day switched on and found it booted normally, left it on for 4-5 hrs and while working on it, it FROZE. On removing power n restarting same problem recurred.
Is it a a major problem or a minor one? Would appreciate if someone can plz guide me as to what could be wrong and what else can be done by me at home.

I currently run win7 ultimate 64bit, 8gig ram, intel i7-2600k cpu, and my OS runs on an OCZ SSD (all specs are in my profile)

Sleep mode is set to S3 in BIOS, I have hibernation disabled (so no hibernation.sys file on my c drive)

When I put my computer to sleep then immediately wake it up, the login screen shows instantly, I type in my pass and it loads in like 0.5 seconds.

When I put my computer to sleep but wait for around 1-2 hrs before waking it, it shows the login screen instantly but after i hit login, it gives me the Welcome spinning circle thingy for like 20 seconds before I can see my desktop. That's like longer than my entire boot-up time excluding POST.

Event viewer doesnt show any performance delay, and I dont think my OS drive (OCZ vertex 2) has a cache so I have it disabled. I'm sure all my mobo drivers and graphic drivers are up to date.

Suggestions on why this might be so? Any idea would be much appreciated!

I installed the September XP updates and rebooted as per normal.

Windows was very reluctant to restart. Went to Safe Mode. Nothing obvious. Restarted. Windows really seemed to struggle to get started. The logo displayed very faintly for what seemed like a very long time and the whole start sequence seemed quite different.

Checked the updates but couldn't see one that would impact on the startup.

Eventually Windows started and has been working normally for about an hour. I am just a little concerned about the unusual behavior after applying the updates.

Anyone else had a problem?

Hello, I recieved my laptop a few days ago.Whenever I open the laptop after it has been closed to go to sleep mode, it does not fully turn back on. The screen is on, but it is black and I can still adjust the brightness. It does this consistently, and I have to turn it on and off to get the display working again, effectively losing any temporary work. I intend to return the laptop if this cannot be fixed. Any suggestions?  It is running windows 10.

Answer:Lenovo P50s Monitor turns on but is black when opened after sleep

Hardware description please... graphics?  BIOS version?  CPU and memory? HDD/SDD/M.2?
Are you running with the latest version of graphics driver?
If you have nVidia graphics in your P50 but you're running with Optimus mode enabled, have you tried setting the BIOS to "discrete graphics" (which disables built-in Intel graphics and Optimus mode and instead sets 100% nVidia graphics mode) to see if that has any effect?  Is your nVidia graphics driver at latest version?

Once again, the never-ending saga of Windows Updates continuing to "Check for Updates" hour after hour after hour - with no results - is again plaguing me.

(I've already run the program in Brink's article [i.e. Option # 3] and cleared/reset the WU cache). Also have run sfc /scannow - no issues reported. I've also changed the WU setting in the Control Panel to "Never check for updates", and restarted the computer.

Does anyone here have any step-by-step instructions for me to try and resolve this problem and get those blasted updates installed?

Thank you for your time and any assistance.

Answer:Windows Updates (September 2016); Keeps checking for hours - Any help

When manually installing updates you need to switch your update settings to Never check for updates and restart the machine first.
Windows Update Settings - Change
After restart verify that the windows update service is not running if it is Stop and switch to Manual apply and okay.
Make sure KB3020369 is installed if not manually install it this is the main article page with all versions,
These other links do prompt you to download as soon as you click on them just to give you a heads up
Win-7 32 bit
Win-7 64 bit

Then manually install KB3172605 main article page with all versions,
Win-7 32 bit

Win-7 64 bit

After switch your windows update and service settings back to what you had prior and manually check for updates and the rest should show up shortly.

My Lenovo Y410 screen goes black at boot, I never see anything other than a faint dim light on the monitor, like what you would see under normal circumstances until the OS started.   I can hear the pc turn on, I can type in my password, even without seeing where it goes, and the pc actually starts fine, I just can't see anything.   Anyone who can help me with this?

Answer:Lenovo Y410 Screen goes black and stays black at startup

Have you tried hooking up an external monitor? Then press (I think) Fn+F3 to toggle between ext. and lcd. This sounds like it MAY be a problem withe the lcd inverter.Very dim screen? You can just barely see images? If so, the inverter can be replaced, or the whole lcd may need replacement. If you have warranty, use it! If not, inverter can be replaced yourself, if you have patience and are careful. Search web for "replace lcd inverter"Here is one good site, different laptop, but you can see the basic steps.

For several last days, I have a strange behavior of speakers and microphone in my t470p. For most of the time they are unavailable in both Linux or Windows OS. However, where I'm doing little push on screen backward (like adjusting screen little bit), both microphone and speaker start working and become available. After I stop adjusting screen (making push backward) device become unavailable again. I'm sure that it is some kind of hardware problem and it should be easy fixing (like some connector is not attached properly inside LCD panel), but according to maintenance manual, I do not see any wires related to speakers or sound card going inside LCD panel. Can anybody advise how to fix such behavior?

Read more at Microsoft will separate Edge browser updates from the Windows 10 OS with Redstone 3

Chrome is updated frequently and seamlessly by Google; however, Microsoft's Edge browser is only updated - aside from security updates - in new feature builds of Windows 10, which only happens twice per year.

But according to internal sources, that's all going to change in September, when the next feature update to Windows 10, codenamed Redstone 3, is released. Users will finally be able to get updates to the Edge browser via the Windows Store, which will allow Microsoft to add new features more frequently.

Answer:Edge Browser Updates to be delivered via Windows Store from September

It sounds like a good idea, but if it a manual update how many average home users will search the store updates. Microsoft needs to make it more automated I think.

I am just going to mention one update which will almost certainly cause a lot of problems for a load of users, mainly gamers who play popular games from a few years ago.

MS15-097: Description of the security update for the graphics component in Windows: September 8, 2015 KB3086255

This update basically disables secdrv.sys which is an anti-piracy copy protection that is used by many games developers and some other software companies. The driver, secdrv.sys, is used by games which use Macrovision SafeDisc. Without the driver, games with SafeDisc protection would be unable to play on Windows.

There have been many security issues with it over the years and Microsoft decided not to allow it to run or be installed at all in windows 10

Just installed the updates for the September 2016 Patch Tuesday updates and noticed that launch execs from a Start Menu search are not working properly? For example, in the past I could type cmd in the search field and then press enter to automatically launch the first search result, which is cmd.exe.This no longer seems to work. Anyone else having the same issues? It is like enter is not defaulting to execute the first search result like it used to.

Answer:Anyone having probs starting programs from start search after September updates?

I am not having those problems on any of my Windows 7 computers, but I have sporadically seen that symptom on other Windows 7 computers. I saw those symptoms however, last year so I am not sure what would cause it.

Hi there. I have a Toshiba Satellite 1805-s207. If my computer is running off its battery rather than the AC adapter, and it goes to sleep, I can't get the screen to start up again by hitting keys or the trackpad, even though I can tell by the lights and fan sounds that the computer is on. I have to then manually shut the computer off and restart, even if programs and documents are running. That means those documents have to be recovered. Can anybody give me some guidance about how this is best fixed? Thanks! Rachel

Answer:Screen won't come out of black after sleep

I do believe that there have been several reported problems with Windows and Sleep Mode. You may wish to search the MS Knowledge base for the Op/Sys you are using.

Also, you may wish to turn off Sleep Mode in Power Management to get around the problem for now.

I have an L70-B119 Satellite upgraded to Windows 10. Just recently the laptop has been going in to sleep mode after approx. 1-2 minutes of no activity for no reason ! I have now changed the settings to over 2 hours but when returning from sleep by hitting a key or moving the mouse all starts up except the display screen which stays black. I then have to hold the power button down to switch of and re-boot from fresh.

Any ideas or help to solve this would be much appreciated !

Thanks, Rob

Hi guys and girls, first off thank you for taking your time to read this

The laptop:
Kobalt (rebranded Clevo)
Windows 7 x64
xTreme Core duo (about 4 years old)
NVidida 9800gtx
4GB Ram
Cant tell you any other specifics as I cant see anything or access any details on the laptop

The problem:
I usually close my laptop lid so i can resume using it if I need it. It will usually shut itself off after a few hours if i have not
This time however when I shut the lid, it did not sleep/hibernate. The screen was grey/black like the backlight was still on but nothing else and the fans were still spinning.
I powered it off using the power button and when I turned the power back on the following day, the same screen shows.
I think it is stuck in permanent attempt to awaken from sleep/hibernate it was not able to complete because it doesn't sound like a cold boot is being performed, more like an sleep start
However since the screen is always black I cant see a thing, ever.
No cursor, blinking light or anything. The screen goes from black to a lighter color which I assume is the backlight. All the fans are spinning, and the drives are working away but the display doesn't want to play

What I've tried:
-Taking out the battery, holding down the power button for 60 seconds and plugging the power lead in and restarting; no effect
-Burned a recovery CD ISO - cant see the screen
-Put a Windows 7 ISO onto a usb ket - cant see the screen
-Connected the laptop to my mac/anoth... Read more

Answer:Black screen after Sleep, can't do or see anything

Welcome to the Seven Forums!

Try blindly tapping the F8 key during a reboot in the hopes that you get to the safe mode.

You might also borrow/try another external monitor - besides the one that you've already tried. Maybe visit a store and tell them of your problem, they might let you hook up to a monitor or two just to test.

My screen remains black after coming out of about an hour's sleep, even though the power, fan and keyboard's backlight is on. I have to force shutdown and switch it back on to use it again. It has happened twice, and hasn't successfully come out of a long sleep yet. I got the laptop yesterday, and I haven't made any significant changes to the setup.

Recently i bought a Lenovo y500 laptop with 12 ram and 16gigs of SSD. It came with Windows 8 by deffault and what i wanted was to install Linux Ubuntu 12.04 alognside with the Windows 8. It didn't work out, because i could only log into linux. When i tried to log in in Widonws it said: "unknown command drivemap      invalid EFI file path, so i used the one key recovery. It loaded Windows but i noticed 2 things:1st. After loading the Lenovo logo the screen turns black without the cursor on it and stays that way for about 17-25 sec. That means that from 20 sec boot time now it is 40+.How could i fix that one?2nd. After creating the backup i divided the 1tb disk into smaller discs and after the rocovery they were the way i left them with all the games and media on them. I thought that the one key recovery would undo the partiton i have made. The 2nd one isnt bugging me out so much but the 20 secs extra boot time do. The changes i have made in bios are disabling secure boot and switching boot mode from UEFI to legacy. After that i switched secure boot to enabled and the boot mode to UEFI as it was in the beginning.

Answer:Lenovo y500 black screen after the lenovo logo slows down boot time

hi psskobraa,
Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.
Regarding your questions:
1. The additional 17-25sec boot time is probably caused by the UEFI Firmware / UEFI boot loader (see this flowchart) - this probably got modified when you installed Ubuntu. Can you try to boot back into the BIOS, press F9 to load default settings then press F10 to save It settings. If this doesn't work, is the boot time the same when Disabling Secure Boot and UEFI set to Disabled/Legacy first?
2. OneKey Recovery usually reimage the OS partition only (i.e. C:\) and will not affect any other partitions (i.e. D:\)

I just bought this laptop for about 1 month, the laptop work fine before. But after...I don't know maybe after the windows update, the driver make the screen flickering and some dots appear on the screen, sometimes the screen lagging and went black. I'm pretty sure it's because of the driver because if I disable it, everything is fine, but that is just a temporary fix, every games is unplayable when I disable the driver. I tried to reinstall it using driver from Intel, Windows, Lenovo but none of them work(newest)

To make a long story short, I've been asked to help fix a friends mom's U410 laptop which wasnt activiting Windows 8.1 properly (Was Windows 8 OOB). After struggling with the activation for a few hours, I backed up the data and decided to just run the Lenovo one key recovery. During the recovery process, the installation had failed. When I attemped to reboot, no Lenovo splash screen was loading - just a black screen (although i can hear the cooling fan start, and hear the harddrive spin up. I tried to access the boot menu thru the novo button, and nothing would load; still a black screen. After researching for a few more hours, I had found multiple threads about bios updates required to be able to access bios with windows 8, and other threads about gpus on these units booting to a second screen (which i did test, and the second monitor does indicate a signal). None of the solutions on those threads have given positive results.   Basically, I've run out of options and am looking for some suggestions. The only thing that shows up on the display at anytime is the small blue novo menu when the button is pressed (normal start up, bios setup, boot menu, system recovery - all of which just leave a black screen). Thanks.

All right, I can't figure this out. I got all the lenovo updates and all windows updates.  SL500 with Vista home basic.  Putting it to sleep is fine, but when waking up, it goes into a black screen which then I have to hold the power button down and manually restart.  Seems this has happened before, and now it's happening on the SL.  Anyone with simliar problems?  Any workarounds?

Answer:Black screen on wake up from sleep

I have the same problem with my SL500 too, quite alot of times since i bought the notebook.... Occurs when i try to wake it up after sleep or hibernation mode. Do you sometimes get a blue screen too? Does your error log record the crash as a 'Bluescreen' problem?  I've read that its due to the Vista OS. How retarded is that... not sure how to fix it, it's **bleep** frustrating..

I have followed other threads with similar concerns but so far nothing has helped. Just to clarify the problem, I have my G60 Notebook set to go to sleep when the lid is closed. It goes to sleep after a couple seconds. When I open the lid it wakes up as evident by the fan and the hard drive light. The screen stays black. If I close the lit and imediatly open it, the notebook goes to sleep after a couple seconds but the lid is now open. If I press any key or swipe the mouse it wakes up and the screen wakes up as well. This has been happening ever since I updated to Win 10. The notebook starts properly and wakes from hybernation properly as well. I have tried power setting trouble shooter, disable hybrid boot, reset BIOS to default, update graphics and all other drivers, but the problem persists as described. I have not tried a reinstall of Win 10. The BIOS is ver F.62 12/25/2009. I can not find an update to the BIOS. I have a pentium processor but I do not have the Intel MEI installed on my notebook (don't know if I ever did). I tried installing Version 1.5M but I get an error message "system does not meet minimum requirements." Are you aware of any other fixes to the wake up problem or suggestions for installing the Intel MEI?

Answer:Black screen after waking from sleep

Hi @PapaDelta52?, Thank you for your inquiry.  I grasp that you have your notebook set to enter sleep mode when you close the lid.  When you open the lid you can hear the fan and  hard drive spin up, but the display remains black or blank.  If you press a key or move the mouse the screen responds. You have tried the  power setting troubleshooter, disabling  hybrid boot, resetting the  BIOS to default, updating  graphics and all other drivers, but the problem persists. When I checked the software and driver page for your notebook Windows 10 is  not a supported operating system.  HP has not tested Windows 10 on your model of notebook and the outcome is unknown.   This does not mean it will not work only that the outcome is unknown.  HP does not guarantee that Windows updates will have drivers. Here is a link to  HP PCs - Sleep and Hibernate Issues (Windows 10, 8) that may help. Please let me know the outcome.Thank you  for participating in the HP Forums! BTW: I have already installed the BIOS drivers and it has made no difference.

Answer:Screen black after sleep wakeup

Try using System Restore to set it back to a point before this problem started happening - IMO that's the easiest and 2nd most successful way of fixing this problem.

Also, update your video, chipset, and storage drivers - just in case.

This is the most successful way of fixing KSOD (Black Screen of Death) issues:
At work we don't mess with these issues - as it can take weeks to solve them (and no one wants to pay me by the hour to troubleshoot their computer for weeks!). We slave the hard drive to another system (to backup the data), then we do a diagnostic (to make sure there's no overt hardware issues), then we wipe the hard drive and clean install Windows.

Sometimes (NOT ALWAYS) my laptop simply doesn't respond when I put it to sleep mode. I just click put to sleep, then it is behaving like it is going to sleep, but then it "freezes" on black screen, HDD is running, fan is running, led indicator is flashing, but it doesnt respond. The only solution is to turn it off by holding power button for several seconds. I thought that it was problem of my previous Windows (W7U SP1 64bit), but now I'm using W8.1Pro 64bit for 2 weeks and today, it happened again ! my BIOS is up to date, and drivers too (as I made full instalation by myself, not just some sort of upgrade). I also have disabled "hybrid sleep". and I also unchecked "allow computer to turn off this device" and "... to wake up computer by this device" on everything like USB devices and network adapters., but no change. Any suggestions ?

I have a suspicion that it has something to do with wi-fi, as it didn't happen when I was connected just with ethernet cable for 2 weeks, but it happened today as I started to use wireless connection (home network) as I came back home.

I'm not sure if this counts as a crash, but please bear with me here.

I have a Sony Vaio VPCSB11FX/W laptop. I lock the screen (it's password protected too) and close the lid when I need to get up to do something else while using it. Usually, the blue Windows 7 lock screen shows up when I open the laptop, but just now, I got a black screen that wouldn't respond to any buttons, so I shut the laptop down manually by holding down the power button. When I booted up and logged in, I got the old 'Windows was shut down unexpectedly' message.

Just curious, why did I get the black screen? Also, the power button was green, which means it wasn't in sleep mode at all, and the laptop's fan was whirring loudly too. This has happened to me a couple of times before, and I usually wait at least 30-60 seconds for the black screen to respond before shutting down, though the fan makes a louder noise the longer I wait. This happened even though the lid was closed properly. I'm hoping you guys can give me some advice on how to prevent this from happening in the future, please and thank you.

Answer:Black screen after sleep mode--why?

I still recommend following the if you have had blue screens in the past. You said you usually get a blue screen during these circumstances, and those are the best method to determine why sometimes you also get the black screen. It is highly likely the behaviors are related to each other, and this behavior usually indicates a Bug Check 0x9F: DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE crash.

First of all, I can't remember when and how this started, but definitely after upgrading from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 Pro.

So, my screen (Acer LCD, connected to GTX 560 with 1 meter DVI cable) started going black (power light on, background light completely off) when I watched a video that had lot of dark on it. Happens in some games as well where the cut scenes change.

I tested it by full screening a plain black image and the screen went to sleep, mouse cursor dissapeared.
Moving the mouse does not wake up the screen, only when i press Win key to bring up some color to the screen. (the task bar seems to be enough to wake the screen.)

I have checked all the power settings and turned off all the sleep settings, 'Turn off display after' is set to 'Never'
'Multimedia settings' are set to ' Prevent idling ' and 'Optimize video quality'

What is happening?

Edit: Nvidia driver version is 355.60

Answer:Monitor goes to sleep when screen has lot of black.

I would start with some troubleshooting. First I would boot into safe mode and see if it does it. If doesn't, you have narrowed down the problem somewhat. If it does, then boot into a completely different operating system (such as a Live Linux disc) and see if it still does it. Another thing you could try is a different monitor if you have one, and/or a different video card if you have one.

I'm having the same issue. As I open up my laptop after having it closed (while the power was on). I tried disabling the monitor & enabling it but it didn't work. I even turned off the sleep mode & still, nothing. I would literally have to hold the power button to turn off the laptop & turn it back on just for my screen to come back to its original set before I closed it & it went to sleep.

I also noticed that the Lenovo Icon displayed during Power On is also Teal in Color. I tried booting the laptop in Safe mode and the problem still remains.I tried booting the laptop using Windows XP CD and try to repair the Windows XP installation using R optionand still the screen goes black.  Please advice if this is a hardware or software or virus issue.

Hi there.  I have the same problem.  My screen is black all the time now with odd spurts of light occuring just after loading. My laptop is sadly out of guarantee so I cannot get any telephone help from IBM, however the chap I spoke to did hint that it was a problem with the LCD cable. Then I phoned my local PC repair man and he said it sounds like the bulb, because I can still faintly see the outline of whats on the screen through the "blackness". So.  Not sure! Have you come to any resolution yet?  Meantime I have my laptop pluggged into an external monitor until I get it fixed.  Susan
