Question: Touchscreen goes black when screen is touched. Com...

I have an Aspire R3-131T-C3PV, Windows 10, bought 4 months ago, little used. Everything functions fine... except that recently every time the touchscreen is touched it goes black. Touching the screen again brings it right back on. The display works fine when the touchpad is used or when a mouse is used.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The title says it all.  I've had this problem for a while, but I don't know when exactly it started since I let others use it.  I have a touch screen and when I try to touch the screen, it works, but goes black.  When I touch the screen again, it comes back on.  It's as if touching the screen puts it in screen saver mode or something.  This isn't my main computer and there's not much important stuff on it, so I don't mind resetting if that's a way to do it.  Thanks in advance.

Hi,My Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro laptop is out of warranty by now, but I'm trying to get the issue fixed via a claim with my credit card company.  After turning on the laptop, the screen goes black while the backlit keyboard remains.  Touching the screen gives a vibration.  I connected the laptop to an external monitor via the HDMI out and found out the laptop is working so it's the screen having an issue.  I tried searching online and it looks like I'm not the only person having this issue; it's fairly common.Question -- How much would it cost to repair (or replace the screen if it's not repairable)?Thank you.

Hi Gang -

I was getting ready to use a USB Flash Card Reader on my computer. I don't keep the reader plugged in. I booted my computer and waited for it to finish. Then I went to plug in the Flash Card Reader....I only got as far as touching the plug to the socket and then the display went black. Tried a few keyboard strokes and moving the mouse, didn't bring up display, so held the power button down to turned the computer computer off. Waited for several minutes and then turned the computer back on. Display stays black and it appears that the computer is no longer going through its boot sequence...when I turn it on, 1 green light comes one in the bank of lights that flash when it is booting and stays on. Next a green light on my DVD drive temporarily turns on, but then turns off. After this, no more activity. I did not see/feel any static shock when I touched the USB plug to the USB port, but I suppose a transfer could have happend. My computer was built by my brother, but unfortunatley he is not available for help.

Thanks so much for your help! I have listed some details about the computer below, please let me know if you need to know anything else.

Answer:Touched USB device plug to USB port - screen went black, now computer won't boot

I highly doubt that the USB connection would have done this, so here is my troubleshooting advise:
1. You may have bumped into the VGA connector which connects your monitor to your computer, and it could have come loose, making your screen go blank.
2. If the USB ports that you were plugging the drive into were not onboard(on the back of the computer connected to the motherboard), the connection from your motherboard to the cables which may connect to the USB remote location could have come loose if they were not connected properly.
3. Have you used this same Port before if it isn't on board? If not, it is possible that the USB connector to the motherboard may be connected wrong, and when you complete the circuit with your drive you POSSIBLY shorted out the motherboar (also not too likely).

If none of these help, you can also call Abit's help line because it is more than likely a motherboard problem @: 1- 510 492-0968.

Morning all, Long time reader, first time poster. I have an HP ENVY Touchsmart 15-j004sa (Windows 8) which won't boot following the most recent BIOS update.  The laptop will power up, but the screen remains black.  The power light remains on, but the screen, CAPS LOCK and WIFI buttons remains unresponsive and don't seem to flash an eroor code.  The sound of the HDD can be heard on boot up, as can the fans. I have attempted a  BIOS recovery using WIndows+B on turning on using a straight copy of the previous BIOS and a full recovery image, as well as all steps contained in this article.  In every instance the screen remains black and there seems to be no progressing from this point. I'm at a bit of a loss where to go from here, but I'm not quite ready to surrender.  I can see a few people have had similar problems with other models, but none so far with this one. If anyone has any suggestions or guidance I'd be extremely grateful. Chalky

I have a client that says the little circles that come up every time he touches the screen is giving him a headache.  Does anyone know how to shutoff the response of the pen each time it touches the screen,  but still have the pen work? Thanks.

Answer:X220 Pen touch on screen: How to disable the circles that show when the pen has touched the screen

You need to disable the cricles that appaers after touching the screen, there is no such option, I would suggest you to please perform the workarounds.
1.To remove fingerprints, etc., from the touch panel display, use a dry, soft, lint-free cloth or a piece of absorbent cotton. Do not apply solvents to the cloth.2. Gently wipe foreign particles and dust from the touch panel with one side of the cloth.3. Wipe smudges or fingerprints with the other side of the cloth, or with a clean cloth.4. After using the cloth, wash it with a neutral detergent.
After this, please check if the issue resolved.

Hi there I've just got my first touch screen computer, a Yoga 710 14IKB and have noticed recently that it has started entering sleep mode if I touch the screen.  This doesn't happen always, if I'm using a downloaded app (often those designed for touch screens) it might not happen, but definitely happens whenever I'm using Chrome, most other programmes, and also whenever there are no programmes open. I've tried searching the forums but couldn't find any mention of this, but if its already been answered then please just point me to the appropriate thread. Any help you can give is greatly appreciated.

Answer:Yoga 710 14 screen turns off when touched

Hello AjgoslingThanks for using the Lenovo forums.Try to download the Video and Chipset drivers for the unit from the support page.
Make sure to reboot after an update on the unit.
Also, Try a static discharge for this, it may help to resolve the issue or at least get rid of any built up static on the motherboard.(If the battery is internal, please just skip the remove/replace battery steps.)1. Turn the unit off2. Remove the battery and the Mains adapter3. Press and hold the front power button for 30 seconds4. Replace the battery and the Mains adapter5. Turn the unit on as normal
Hope this helps, let us know how you get on.==================================================================================Did someone help you today? Thank them with a Kudo! If you find a post helpful and it answers your question, please mark it as an "Accepted Solution"!

I have had my Lenovo Y50-70 for little over a year (so it is out of warranty) and just recently I have been having an issue with my screen turning off if it is adjusted or tapped. It will turn off if the screen is moved or sometimes when I am adjusting the laptop or moving it. The system stays on it and it is just the display that shuts off. If I hibernate the computer and turn it back on without moving the screen, it begins to work again. Oddly enough, this only happens about 60% of the time even if I try to make it happen. This seems to be a hardware issue but I am not too tech savvy so any advice would be very helpful.  Thanks!

Hey guys!

I am using HP 470 G2 laptop with Win 8.1 , which got an annoying habit of turning screen off after some minutes without touching laptop. When you are typing or touching it it is all fine. I have set power options to never turn off screen, changed Console lock display timeout to 90 mins, machine is fully updated, Graphic drivers updated. I have contacted HP support where they suggested just to make a cold boot , did that, took RAM out and in again and their second and last suggest was to send it to service. Before that I ve got an idea to test it with UBUNTU.
Did it with Ubuntu and it does not black the screen when not touching anything, and all is functioning normally. So there must be a problem with Windows, I think, but cant resolve it on my own and I really gave my self a fair effort but it is fruitless so pls if you know better I will appreciate it!!

Thank you

I have Win 32 bit app written in Delphi XE. Windows 10 is set to tablet mode. When I touch edit boxes or memo boxes on my app, keyboard does not appear. It only appears if I touch a password field e.g. edit control with password char set to *. When I run notepad.exe and touch it - keyboard appears. But not for any editable controls on my app ... except for password fields... What is the trick here?

I have an intermittent problem with my Yoga 13 touchscreen display. Following are the symptoms: After a few minutes of operation, a 2.5-inch vertical strip along the left edge of the touchscreen flickers in various colors until it turns completely black. The system is always fully operable and I can even launch applications or select windows by touching the appropriate areas within the blacked-out strip. This occurs only with the Yoga 13 touchscreen display itself ? the problem does not extend to my external monitor.Restarting, or usually just putting the system to sleep for several minutes, causes the black bar to disappear, at least for a while. But it often comes back after use.The problem is intermittent, though it seems to occur more frequently when ambient temperatures are warmer.Occasionally I am able to get the bar to disappear by pressing my thumb onto that area of the touch screen. But this only works for a few minutes and the problem reappears. Eventually, applying pressure has no effect whatsoever.Would love any input you folks have on what this could be. I'm afraid I'm looking at a costly repair, however. (The system is well out of warranty.) Thanks!

Answer:Black bar along left edge of Yoga 13 touchscreen

You are probably correct. This is going to cost you some money.
Seems like either display or the cable is failing. In either case both the things need to be replaced. You can do it yourself and save time and money or you can send it to Lenovo and they can do it for you.
Make sure you backup your personal data, in case you decide to send it to Lenovo.

Hi all,First post!  My Dad's Lenovo laptop goes to a black screen when starting up, so is unusable.I haven't seen it in the flesh yet but have started to research things for him and have found that 'black screen' shows up quite a lot for Windows 10 and Lenovo PCs! We were so impressed with my Dad's PC I've ended up with the same model myself:Lenovo YOGA 500 Convertible Laptop, Intel Core i7, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, 15.6" Touch Screen. Also labelled as: Yoga 500-15IBD Laptop (ideapad)  I see some people mentioning hardware failures and others device driver problems with the graphic card etc. but haven't read a definite cause/fix for this so far. I've just found this recent critical BIOS update for this PC which mentions the black screen problem:Software name: BDCN63WW Version 63[Important updates] Fix Win 10 lid close black screen issue. haven't seen this mentioned in the forums? Has anyone else used this?If the PC always boots to a black screen I'll obviously have trouble installing this! I'm hoping that it will boot in Safe Mode or I'm going to have some trouble installing it?! I don't know whether to install the BIOS update on my own machine which is running fine - I think I'll wait until I see my Dad's laptop first which will be in a few weeks. Has anyone had any experience of this BIOS update or other comments on this?Thanks. &nb... Answer:Yoga 500 'BLACK SCREEN' - BIOS update: "[Important updates] Fix Win 10 lid close black screen issue"

I'm still wondering about this... I've just updated the Lenovo Companion after seeing it mentioned in another thread. It looks like this s/w is supposed to scan the PC and recommend Lenovo updates - critical and nice to have ones. Initially the Companion was showing a critical update for Lenovo SHAREit and a recommended one for my BIOS. It says I'm currently on BDCN28WW and offered something like v61 and not the 63 I mentioned in my first post? After letting it update SHAREit and re-scanning the BIOS update is no longer being offered and still shows me on v28 ??? I'm not sure I trust this 'Companion' app!My laptop seems to be running fine so I don't want to break it updating the BIOS if it's not required. For all I know my Dad's broken one may be broken because it upgraded?! Does anyone else use/trust the Companion app?And has anyone else seen it change it's mind on recommended BIOS updates? Thanks.

I have Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit. So, these are my problems described in the title. I cannot change desktop from black, only can set a picture as a background.

When I am in pictures folder for example, I see blank or black thumbnails.
When I right click and go to personalize, I can see black themes instead of actual pictures.

I tried almost everything.
- reinstalling video driver
- clearing thumbnail from disk cleanup
- resetting dwm.exe
- going into safemode and then restaring into normal windows
- I tried fixing shell by using "fixshell"
- clearing & repairing registry errors
- ran an error checker
- ran a file checker

I have Microsoft Office 2010 - I heard that it could be the issue, but maybe I am not right, anyway...

I attached a print screen photo.

And, I am hopeless, any help please? Thanks

Answer:Windows 7 black screen, black or blank thumbnails, and black desktop themes

I noticed you're not running Aero. Click on last item, left side - "Troubleshoot problems with transparency...."

Office 2010 should not be a factor here. Public pics folder is empty - it should have sample pics in it.

I'm getting the black screen with movable cursor or KSOD (Black Screen Of Death) on Windows Vista.

What happens:
The system powers on.
Start windows normally
Windows splash screen
-> Black screen <-

What I can do:
I CAN enter BIOS and have reset the default settings.
I CAN press F8 to give me advanced boot options, but all options have the same result, apart from "Repair your computer".
I CAN load the "Repair your computer" option.
I CAN move the mouse around the screen.
I CAN press shift 5 times to get a dialogue to appear, but no control panel.
I CAN press the power button to shut down the system.
I CAN start up in safe mode, which is exactly the same, but with lower resolution.

I CANNOT seem to do anything else.

However, there are workarounds to accessing the hard drive:

I CAN use MSDaRT or the System Recovery Tool.
I CAN use the hard drive as an external USB hard drive on another machine.

What I've tried:
Startup Repair - Could not detect a problem.
System Restore - No restore points.
Windows Complete PC Restore - A valid restore location could not be found.
Windows Memory Diagnostics - No errors.
SFC Scan - No problems.
Stand alone system sweeper - No problems.
Hotfix Uninstall - Nothing to uninstall.

I also COULD do a partial or full "Packard Bell Recovery", which is essentially like reinstalling windows. I DO NOT want to do this.

I'm sure this is just a simple software issue real... Read more

I think I saw this post aver at Toms but I also think you gave some additional info.
I think what may be going on it during the switch from the windows low res video driver to the driver used in normal mode.

Since you can get into safe mode try to go to device manager.
Start|right click computer|properties|device manager.
Look in the display adapter.
Is there a yellow exclamation mark there?
Or is it showing the video that you know should be there?
Please post the video that the machine uses and or the PB model.

Hi, I have this 4 year old Lenovo Y560(config below)

The discrete graphic card has probably fried a long time ago, so last year when I did a clean install of Windows, I had to disable ATI Card permanently in the device manager using safe mode and used the Intel integrated card. A few days ago, I booted up windows only to encounter, "A disk read error has occurred, press ctrl+alt+del to restart" . I tried to boot up using WIN 7 install disc, but soon after the Starting Windows logo , the screen turns black and I am left with a cursor in a black screen. I tried to boot into Safe Mode but still I encountered a black screen with just the cursor .

I booted with Ubuntu live usb and was able to access all my partition and did back up and even formatted the Windows Partition. I tried to boot using a WinPe and faced the Black screen with a cursor again. I even reset BIOS to default, changed Graphics Adapter from "Discrete' to "Switchable' and vice-versa, but no effect at all. When I boot up using Ubuntu and ran lspci | grep VGA I can see both cards listed. I even tried to boot up using Windows 10 preview disk, still I get a black screen after the Windows loading screen.

I can't afford to buy any laptop presently since I am currently at college, so using Ubuntu for now. Is ther any way to install Windows 7 again? Is it possible to get the ATI Card working properly- reballing, reflow?

What other graphics adapter choices are available in BIOS setup? If you choose Switchable is there software on the Lenovo site for your model that's needed? Are you using the Display adapter software from there?

Have you tested your HD with the maker's HD Diagnostic extended CD scan, followed by a full Disk Check on a single disk partition you create?

Then work through the steps for Overcoming Windows 7 Installation Failures - Windows 7 Help Forums including trying an alternate install method (disk><flash stick) with new media. These steps overcome almost all install failures, so you'll be reasonably sure the problem is hardware or BIOS settings if nothing works. But don't skip any steps.

Try Clean Install Windows 10 Technical Preview to see if there's any difference with a more modern OS install. It's already a very polished OS and worth testing this.

In win7 and win8.1, i could set the screen of my tablet (Lenovo Miix3) to switch off after 3 min (not sleep, just switch off the screen). Tapping the touchscreen would bring it immediately to life again.

With win10, this does not happen. I need to click the on/off button to bring up the screen. So, it seems that Win10 switches off the touchscreen electronics. This is not a hardware issue, because previous Windows versions would let me switch off the touchscreen backlight but retain its sensitivity to touch (and therefore switching on upon tapping).

What do I need to do to restore the standard behavior (tappable touchscreen after switchoff) in Win10?

Answer:touchscreen disabled when screen switches off

Iv never had 1 before but every phone iv cracked a screen on has still worked but this touchscreen isnt working at all an its only a small crack at top of screen, any ideas without replacing the screen? As it was only cheap an im guessin a new screen would probaly cost more to buy an fit than the phone did? I could live wiv the crack if only i could still use it, should this happen? An can it still be used? Help needed? Thanks

Answer:Cracked Screen Only Touchscreen Not Working?

Every touchscreen has one point where the digitizer (the touchscreen) has wires coming out of it that connects to the motherboard on the phone. If you crack it there, where the tiny little wires connect, you can completely lose touch on the digitizer. It sounds like that may be unfortunately where your screen cracked. Bing for "Lumia 530 digitizer" to see the cost of a new one.

I got my Lenovo Edge  15 back earlier this year from service (hard drive fixed) but when it was returned to me the touch screen no longer worked. There is no touch screen driver visible on the device manager either, nothing labled touch screen or anything similair, is there a way to re-isntall the touchscreen? This laptop was a 2 in one, tablet/laptop and used to be touch screen compatible / usable now it doesn't seem to work that way at all.

At a certain time, circles appear on the screen and this one is blocked.

I work with Windows 8

Is somebody had this problem and solved ?

Answer:Circle on the screen and touchscreen blocked

I don?t think that someone will be able to help you only reading this small message.

I mean you did not post enough information to make a opinion about this issue and possible reasons.

I don?t know what notebook you have, I don?t know when this issue happens and most important think is; did it appear using notebook with factory settings?

SOme info about the laptop. Product Name: Sleekbook HP Pavilion 14-f004lOperating System: Microsoft Windows 8 (64-bit) I've had this problem a couple times already. The touchscreen stops working sporadically and the only way to make it work again is installing the  AUO Touchscreen Firmware/ sp63116.exe driver from this site. however this last time I've run into quite the weird problem. The driver installer CLOSES INMEDIATELY BEFORE I CAN DO ANYTHING A couple months ago I posted this: Since then due to time constrains and schoolwork, I did not attempt to restore the BIOS until today.Today I restored the BIOS, followed all procedures they gave me, and the installer for the Touchscreen firmware does the following: -Runs-Asks for permission-Install it-Finishes installing-Runs the program's window-Inmediately closes, I can't even click on anything because it flashes for a second and disappears. I've already restored the laptop to factory presets. The installer DOES THE SAME THINGRestored the BIOS. The installer DOES THE SAME THING So please, do not tell me to restore the laptop. I've done it already. Doesn't work. Same thing for the BIOS. Nothing. Can anyone help me? Thank you

So I've had this happen countless times. The touchscreen stops working. The laptop is in perfect conditions. The screen, not even a scratch. I format the laptop, it still doesn' work. So, I've always fixed it by installing the AUO Touchscreen Firmware/ sp63116.exe from: My problem atm is that this time, that process isn't working. The installer opens, installs the thing, then the program opens and immediately closes. This prompts windows to ask me if the driver installed correctly or that if it should attempt to install under a compatibility mode. No matter which I choose, it still does the same thing. It won't stay open for more than 1 second.  I've restored my laptop to factory presets a couple times already and the touchscreen isn't working yet because the driver/program/wizard thingy refuses to stay open after it is done installing. Can anybody help me? Perhaps share a different version of the installer? Thank you.

Hi There I got this laptop over the weekend and initial impression is very good. I have applied the window 10 update and any drivers that have been superceeded. I have noticed that there is a slight flickering on the desktop when running on battery. When on power this does not occur. It also goes away if I put the screen up to full brightness when on battery. It is not really bad, but is noticable.  Anyone else experienced this? It seems more software related than hardward. I could take it back to the retailer for an exchange, but this seems pointless if the hardware is not at fault. Any help appreciated.

I've been using Windows 8 for a week and a half now, and even after viewing some YouTube tutorials on Windows 8, I still have some questions: Is the Metro/Tile screen pointless if you don't have a touchscreen? I don't have a touchscreen on my laptop, and even if I did, I wouldn't use it because 1) I don't want fingerprints on my screen and 2) I prefer using my mouse.  In any case, I'm trying to figure out if the tiles can still benefit me if I don't have a touchscreen.  For the most part, I find myself pressing the Windows key and working on the desktop instead like I've always done.
Another question is how come when I go into Internet Explorer 10 on the desktop, it looks like the usual IE (web address bar on top, favorites, etc), but when I go into Internet Explorer on the Metro/Tile screen, it looks very minimal and different (a black web address bar on the bottom of the page)?  Is there a reason I'd want to use the latter?
Thanks in advance for answering my questions and giving me any tips you might have.  I really do want to take advantage of the benefits of Windows 8, but I'm having a hard time figuring out what those benefits are.

Answer:Any point of Metro/Tiles screen without a touchscreen?

All metro apps are optimized to work with touch screen. Although you can operate those with a keyboard and mouse it is not that easy. If you prefer you can completely avoid metro apps and metro screen by installing any of the free "start menu" programs like 'Classic Shell' or 'IOBit start menu'.
For using classic shell  visit
For using IOBit start menu visit
I personally use IObit start menu and it is more closer to Win 7 start than classic shell. But classic shell offers XP style start menu and that is the choice of many others.

I'm having a couple of issues on my brand new Yoga 3 14".I just booted up this morning and the touchscreen is non-responsive. I've tried hard booting, restarting, shutting down and booting back up, booting up with the power plug in, without it in. Nothing is affecting the touch screen. Having no other problems with the comp (other than a slight screen distortion which has been there since the comp's first boot up - a black line about 1 pixel wide with a length down the entire screen, it only shows up on some colors on the screen and cannot be seen in a screen shot, I will include an image of it that I took with my phone), no probs with the trackpad touch. I've tried turning airplane on and off. (Image of the screen distortion) I think what caused the touch screen issues has to do with the Windows update the comp just had. I was logging off last night and it wanted to do an update before shutting down. Not sure what the update was for, but it was fairly short. I am on Windows 8 (pre-installed). I just received my Yoga 3 a few days ago and have only used it a handful of times so far. I've barely changed any settings or done anything to it that could have altered the comp. I haven't even transferred my files yet or used it for a full day of computing. The most time I've spent on it so far has been to watch a TV show on Netflix last night... I've only flipped it into a different mode once, last night. I did not have trouble with the touch screen last night, on... Read more

Toshiba Satellite A305-S6858

First question.
1. If there are no cracks on the actual screen that you can reach up and touch, but you see the crack behind the glass, is that the screen broken or backlight broken.

2. Would I look for a replacement screen or a replacement backlight?

3. Since I'm going to replace the screen, backlight whatever, is it possible to make it a touch screen?

Thank you so much for your help.

Answer:Toshiba A305 broken screen to touchscreen?

1. Its a broken screen, your computer had protective glass in front of the LCD screen it self.

2. well we answered this already.

3. I don't know about this one, I would have to say no, but if it was possible your local PC shop will not be able to do it, and I would assume it would cost a lot of money.

Hi everyone. I have an HP laptop, Product name: HP ENVY x360 m6 Convertible, Product number: M1V60UAR#ABA.

The Problem
I cracked the screen in the top right. There is a web up there now, just outside the actual workspace, in the half inch or so black border. A few cracks extend out into the screen, one loops off to the right and the other goes all the way down the center. The screen still works great and aside from the cosmetic crack, nothing else seems to be wrong. The crack is very thin and looking straight at the screen it is almost invisible. It is much more pronounced when you view the screen from an angle.

The touchscreen started acting up a little, but I am not the biggest fan of a touchscreen on a laptop so I disabled it, and I am really quite fine with it.

The problem is the cosmetic crack. I know I can use it for as long as it lasts and does not spread too much, since the screen works great. However, over time this will deteriorate, spread and eventually become a problem.

The laptop was refurbished so no warranty. I am also told that accidental damage is not covered in a warranty so I am not sure what good that would have done any way. I did take it to two computer repair shops and I was told that this model is fairly new, and they do not have access to replacement screens. They said they would get in touch with me if they found anything.

I also tried the website ScreenTek, which sells replacement screens. However, they do not have the m6 series lis... Read more

Okay I just got the laptop today as a gift from a dear friend and I set it up and everything and It's an amazing product.  I am extremely excited about it because I am a graphic designer and I can work as twice now. The problem is the touch screen which I really love. The problem is that 60% of the screen's touch isn't working at all. It was working in the beginning for 30min but it was flickering like someone was clicking on it on random places but when I reinstalled the Elan drivers and restarted I found out that only a small portion of the screen was working. I will upload a video of the problem and I really hope someone can help me. Thank you!

When I turn the display off, the touchscreen and digitizer are still enabled, so, if I touch the screen, the display comes back on. Any way to solve this?

Also, not sure if related, if I turn the screen off and leave it overnight, the battery drops by 25-30% in about 8 hours. Same thing happens when I leave the screen turned off for a short period of time, the battery just doesn't last. Not sure if its because the touchscreen and digitizer are still on.

P.S. Running on upgraded Windows 10 64bit.

I went to Best Buy and had them put a screen protector on my Chromebook C720P, which was working just fine prior. However although they guaranteed it was a touch-capable protector, I was unable to use the touchscreen feature at all when I got it home. I took it back in to Best Buy and they removed the screen protector as well as did a Powersweep reset of my Chromebook, but to no avail. The touchscreen is still completely unresponsive.I am working on finding my receipt so I can send it in for a warranty, but was just wondering in the meantime if anybody knows why on earth this happened? Is this particular Chromebook not meant to have a screen protector applied? I just wanted to reduce the glare when sitting next to a window or outside. Any advice is appreciated because both myself and Best Buy are totally stumped! They said they've never seen anything like this before... but that's their word (which I now take with a grain of salt haha!). Thanks in advance!

Hi there,

Am using a Dell Inspiron 6400 with XP. It'd been running ridiculously slowly recently so I started an AVG scan and AVG immediately threw up a file, which I then deleted, then I got a "fatal error" message flash up. Since then I havent been able to get to the log in screen, it merely goes to the black screen with cursor, and Safe Mode is just a black screen with Safe Mode in each corner. Ctrl Alt Del also doesnt work in Safe Mode for some reason, and I have no CD. Ho ho.

Anything I can do to fix this?

Hi allI bought a G505 as a birthday gift for my father a year ago.Last week he had a black screen after boot. He put the battery out etc and let it for some time before trying to boot it again. The problem still existed till the next day when it started as it should.Couple of days ago, out of sudden none of the usb devices where working. I checked it up and I realised that there was some issue (driver maybe) with the usb controller and thus not even a single usb device worked. The system was informing us (windows 8.1) that the installation of the device wasn't succesfull. So, i took the laptop in order to get find a solution (i work as systems engineer). After some check and workaround (restore to previous day that the system was working, uninstalling drivers etc) nothing seemed to be working. Lenovo doesn't give any drivers for usb etc as it says that theycome with the windows system. There, i decided to upgrade it to windows 10 (i was planning to anyway) hoping that the upgrade would fix the problem.I started the whole process while I was in my office and I let it there to complete and I left, expecting to find the installation complete the next day! Today the laptop was on as it should be, but the screen was black. So I restarted it from the power button, but the screen was still black (no cursor everywhere or whatever else).I put the battrety away and unplugged it and let it there for couple of moments. I have been struggling with an intermittent problem for many months, and it is getting worse. I am running windows vista on a toshiba satellite laptop.

My screen will go dark (not quite as black as when the computer is off) when I am using it, and although the computer is still working, I cannot see the screen. Then, on startup, I can occasionally see flashes of the startup logo, which is enough to let me know it is loading. My cursor quits working as well.

After I run spybot in safe mode, and run it again at startup, it works for some time. (This last time was 2 days). So I believe I have a nasty virus. I run Norton 360 all the time, spybot rather frequently, and malaware bytes about once a month.

I am able to get it in safe mode by hitting the down arrow once, and hitting enter.

It is very frustrating. I don't think it is the video card, as it is repaired after spybot use.

Any suggestions?

Answer:Startup screen flickers to black, then all black screen

That is weird situation I'd say. I am unsure what actually is the issue here, perhaps one way of finding what may be happening is having a look at your Event Viewer Logs. You can find Event Viewer, in Control Panel, Administrative Tools.

Also please follow these 8-steps, and post your logs at Malware and Virus Removal Forum for analysis. Regards

Cause the error because lost or miss file System
1. Insert the Windows XP bootable CD into the computer.
2. When prompted to press any key to boot from the CD, press any key.
3. Once in the Windows XP setup menu press the "R" key to repair Windows.
4. Log into your Windows installation by pressing the "1" key and pressing enter.
5. You will then be prompted for your administrator password, enter that password.
6. Copy the below two files to the root directory of the primary hard disk. In the below example we are copying these files from the CD-ROM drive letter, which in this case is "e." This letter may be different on your computer.
expand e:\i386\Lsass.ex_ c:\windows\system32\
7. Once both of these files have been successfully copied, remove the CD from the computer and reboot.

This is a Toshiba touchpad utility.
Navigate to C:\Windows\system32

Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

PASTE 00THotkey.exe into the Startup directory.

Creating a shortcut may work just as well,

Try uninstalling, restarting and then installing the utility from the Toshiba resource CD or even online. I honestly don't think you need the Utility to use the touchpad but just in case have a mouse handy.

Your log is clean. Before I have you go over to the XP forum let's do a quick check for any hidden files and make sure that you do not have anything hiding in your system that does not show up here.Download and unzip the contents to its own permanent folder.Important! Reboot in SAFE MODE !!Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:Restart the computer in Safe Mode.As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.Press the Enter key.Locate the pfind.bat file and double-click it to run it. Whenever I use the pen while the screen is flipped back over 180 degrees (whether in tent mode, tablet mode, whatever) the touchscreen becomes unresponsive. The pen works just fine but the screen wil eventually stop responding to touch. THe only fix I found is flipping the screen to laptop mode and back. This isn't app specific either. I mostly use the pen with Artrage and Photoshop, but I just tested on Edge and Mail, and the touchscreen became unresponsive.  I can use the pen in laptop mode without it interferring with touch. Something tells me there's a software issue.  Are there any fixes to this? It's really annoying.  In addition, the pen input can be very buggy at times, it wants to stick to teh top of the screen and I often end up moving the window while drawing.  I've calibrated the pen a few times, and I use both the built in pen as well as the thinkpad pen pro one (the thicker one you can be separately).

Is there a way to detect what folders/files were searched or touched when an attack is discovered? Our security guys shut down one of my servers because of a lot of bandwidth happening on an unused port. There is some personal data on the server and I need to know if that information was compromised.

Answer:server compromised, what got touched?

It's unlikely you can tell what was touched. If they compromised it at the administrator/local system level and were able to run their own code, consider the whole thing lost. They may have only wanted to run their bandwith hogging application, but it would have been trivial for them to take whatever data they wanted. There's also no telling what else might be on the system. Wipe it completely, reinstall and inform whoever the personal data belongs to that it could be compromised.

The windows key on my Gateway computer is not working and there is a exclamation mark in a red circle right beside of it. I have never seen that before. How do I get the windows key to start working again and also how do I get rid of the exclamation point? Any help you can give me will be greatly appreciated.

Answer:windows key does not bring anything up when touched.

System Restore could fix a virus issue but only if you have a good idea when it went bad and that you are able to go back to before that date. Bear in mind that even if this works you need to be careful not to restore again to a later date which includes the infected period otherwise the virus comes back too. There are two programs that are a very good starting point to at least check (and possibly fix a virus). They are both free:MalwareBytes (often finds and fixes what your Antivirus can miss): from green icon top right of page. Install, Update and Run.ADWCleaner (gets rid of nasty toolbar addons). the blue button "Download @ BleepingComputer"This does not install, instead you "Save" the files somewhere (rather than Running it). Double click the saved file and run the Scan. The Log shows what it found then finally the Clean gets shot of anything undesireable.Keep the logs in case further action is necessary.Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanksmessage edited by Derek

Is it me or I am just imagining it, I thought Se7en was supposed to be the touchy feely OS, the desktops answer to apple's iphone?

I have my trusty little touch screen sat here waiting for a touch screen revolution and he feels more like Elliot Ness!

I can definitely say that the screen ergonomics have not been tweaked and as for the video demo I saw of the 'touch' MCE app, that has definititely not filtered down so far to any release (we are supposed to be at a feature complete stage of the release).

Any pointers, info, guidance, welcome as my touch screen is feeling mighty lonely (sorry for the unintended pun 'feeling' or in his case, 'not-feeling')

Answer:I am not touched by Windows Se7en

Very interesting. I was also under the impression that the touch functionality was supposed to be considered important in every single enhancement and pre-existing functionality was supposed to be enhanced if it didn't give you a fuzzy feeling with the touch screen.

I wish I had some feedback here, but I dont have a touchscreen or tablet myself. I have been browsing for a tablet-netbook to use, but apparently the two terms contradict each other because netbook implies "inexpensive" and "minimalistic" and tablet implies "expensive" and "not a netbook". Maybe 7 was MORE for tablet PC's and physically touching with your fingers is more Microsoft Surface type technology which is right on the horizon?

I haven't seen any trendy adds for a Mac computer that is as fun to touch as people think their phone is, so maybe no one has really come close to replicating that feel on a computer just yet. I know there are patents and Apple has big plans and everything for touch functionality in their OS, but maybe it's just not there yet for any developer.

I have a Dell Inspiron Laptop for 3-4 years, out of warranty. When I pick up my laptop or move my laptop, it shuts down unsafely. This happens 8/10 times when I move or touch the laptop. I have had this problem since the day I got the laptop. I sent it back to the company and they 'fixed it' but this only lasted maybe a month and then the problem returned. I am not familiar with the inside of a laptop, so I thought about taking it apart to see if there was a cord unattaching, but I'm afraid that even if this is happening, I may not notice it or be able to fix it. Does anyone think this may be an easy fix or have any suggestions before I take it to a shop?

Answer:Laptop shuts down when touched

That can be many things. If something is really loose, you'll never find it. It could come from the disk. Make this test:

Boot the laptop from a USB stick and move it then. If it still shuts down, then the disk is not the culprit. If it is the disk, that would be easy to fix.

If you have no program on hand to boot with, download this .iso from my Skydrive (the download takes about 5 to 8 minutes). Then burn this .iso to a USB stick with this program (is very simple). Then change the boot sequence - keep tapping F8 (ESC for HPs) after Power-on and highlight the USB drive/stick (it has to be plugged in) with the up/down key. Then hit Enter and wait until the program has loaded. Then walk around with the laptop and see what happens.

hi, i have been trying to get rid of something (wasn't sure what) for about a week now.

I knew something bad was on my machine but every scan i ran kept coming up with nothing.
as a standard i already have Spybot S&D, Norton and Malware bytes, none of these found anything out of the ordinary so i then dl'ed and ran; Sophos, Kapersky & ad-aware. again nothing major found.
i then tried MBR which also said everything was fine. however, when i ran GMER i then noticed a load of Geyek processes in my registry. i loaded regedit and searched for geyek, it found one entry with no particular threads to it.
But when i checked the registry using GMER there were sub threads and lots of keys (all shown in red), but none of these values could be deleted or even renamed.

I do not think HJT shows anything improper, and while combofix has said it reomoved some things, the geyek keys remain untouched.

here is the HJT log

Every so often, out of the blue, my PC freezes themoment I touch any Key of the Keyboard. System Restore to an earlier Date gets me back to normal.Have XP Pro and have tried everything in the book to solve this problem. Three different Keyboards, incl USB. The only thing I can't seem to correct is, to take the Keyboard driver out for good. I can uninstall it, but after restart the PC it always comes back with the original driver from the very first Keyboard. Microsoft Natural 101/102. Any help would be greatly appreciated.Thanks.

So on my computer, something strange happens when I uninstall UxStyle. It has broken my Windows install once and it has done it again. The first time, I kept on doing system restores to see what was the problem that made that black screen. After trial and error, I narrowed it down to UxStyle. So, I deleted Windows 8 and installed Windows 7, which is what I wanted in the first place. Now, I decided to triple-boot Windows 7 with Vista and 8.1, and it has succeeded. I reinstalled UxStyle thinking it was just a problem with my old Windows install, and then uninstalled it after a few days since I felt like the regular look was better. I rebooted Windows and the same effect happened.

So, I would like to know if I can get and replace those three patched DLLs with unpatched DLLs for Windows 8.1. Could I just change the broken ones to have .old next to them and then place the ones I get here there? Also, would sfc /scannow work?

Answer:UxStyle Black Flashing Post-Windows Update Black Screen

Hello lct01a, and welcome to Eight Forums.

A sfc /scannow will attempt to repair any modified or corrupted system files, so that would be a good first step.

Bit of a long story but here I go.

I have 2 Radeon 6950 with the crossfire thing set up, it's been working well for over 2 years.

Over the last few weeks I've been having issues, mostly while watching videos (usually HD and/or full screen). The video will freeze, the audio will loop, then eventually the screen goes black and I get an error message saying "Display driver has stopped working and has recovered".
Sometimes it didn't recover and I have to turn the computer off.

What's now happening is it will freeze at the windows start up. Then after resetting I will get to windows in very very low resolution and in black and white.

So I 're-seated' the cards. I couldn't notice any obvious damage to it except the fans were very dusty so I cleaned them.
Boot it up and I still get the black and white.
I checked the device manager and it said one of the cards was having problems, I uninstalled both drivers from that menu (not quite sure if I should have done this) and for whatever reason it's now working.

However it now seems one of my cards is not being recognised. Only one display adapter is shown in the device manager and AMD catalyst only recognises one card too.

What's the best course of action to determine what's wrong with what card (still not quite sure which one it is).

My Lenovo Y410 screen goes black at boot, I never see anything other than a faint dim light on the monitor, like what you would see under normal circumstances until the OS started.   I can hear the pc turn on, I can type in my password, even without seeing where it goes, and the pc actually starts fine, I just can't see anything.   Anyone who can help me with this?

Answer:Lenovo Y410 Screen goes black and stays black at startup

Have you tried hooking up an external monitor? Then press (I think) Fn+F3 to toggle between ext. and lcd. This sounds like it MAY be a problem withe the lcd inverter.Very dim screen? You can just barely see images? If so, the inverter can be replaced, or the whole lcd may need replacement. If you have warranty, use it! If not, inverter can be replaced yourself, if you have patience and are careful. Search web for "replace lcd inverter"Here is one good site, different laptop, but you can see the basic steps.

Hello there,

So as the title says, I'm having some problems with my computer. I bought it about 4 weeks ago, and no issues with it other than when I try to play an MMO that would make the graphics card work. The graphics card that is installed in the computer was separately bought and installed, so I'm thinking it might be conflict issues with the card, but I don't know.

The way it happens is, I run the games, I can play for anything from a minute, to 15mins and then my screen says it has disconnected from the image, goes black, and I can hear my computer restart, but my screen stays black. I have to manually power off and back on for my screen to start showing images again. Once restarted i get the "Problem Event Name: Bluescreen" thing.

It's really annoying since I just bought GW2 and I can't play properly any help would be appreciated.

Also, in the Action Center it's said that my Nvidia Graphics Card has stopped working or crashed, multiple times, naming the exact times my computer crashed.. which is why I believe it has to do with my card.

I recommend if you are overclocking any hardware, that you reset these values within the BIOS to their default values in order to increase the stability of your system.

Please run the following tests for your graphics card and RAM:
RAM - Test with Memtest86+
Run Memtest86+ for least 7-8 passes, and preferrly overnight as it can take a while to fully complete.

Test each RAM stick individually, if an error is found then move the same RAM stick into the next DIMM slot and test again, if errors are found for the same RAM stick in every available slot then you have a faulty RAM module. On the other hand, if no errors are found in the next slot or the other slots for the same RAM module, then you have a faulty DIMM slot.

Test each RAM stick and every motherboard DIMM slot available.

Hi all,
I just opened my brand new xps 9360 today, i7, 512gb, qhd touchscreen version.
When I first started it up, everything seemed fine until the second or third windows screen during set up. After that my mouse disappeared and the touch screen was continually being touched near the bottom right of the screen despite me not touching it at all. Once I got into windows, I somehow managed to disable it in device manager and the touchpad started working again (using a USB mouse and patience).
Since then I have updated windows as much as it wants to do and updated the BIOS and dell update says everything is up to date.
I have manually downloaded and installed the Bios update to 1.3.2. Went to re-enable to touchscreen and for a few glorious minutes I thought it had fixed! But nope :( phantom touches are back when I enable the touchscreen in device manager. Completely unable to use it at all with continuous touches mainly centred in bottom right but going up and down. I have tried the let windows find updates for the drivers, but it says they are all installed. I have also tried (before updating the bios) uninstalling the driver all together, but after a few minutes it comes back enabled and continued to do the touches.
Sooooooooooooo, is there any hope? Or is this a hardware issue? Anything more I can try for to fix this?! (manufactured 22/12/16 in the bios)

The last post I have been able to locate on this topic was in Feb 2016 where it appears another user was reporting. Mine has had the problem since just after purchase but unfortunately I could not send the laptop back to Dell during the service warranty period because I was in school and could not be without the laptop for that long. Now that I have finished I would like to use the touchscreen functionality but is impossible due to the bubbles floating across the screen and then the erratic opening and closing of windows. The retail store where I purchased has an extended warranty but that company requires troubleshooting with a technician ( all done- no fix) up to and including factory reset prior to sending out a technician. I pushed back at that point and said no I want to investigate before I do a factory reset.
Does anyone know if Dell has acknowledged the issue or offered a fix? If so how would I go about "proving" this is a known issue?

The touchscreen has been working for a while now. The device manager does not show "HID-compliant touch screen." Going into "Show hidden devices" shows a faded HID-compliant touch screen hidden, with no disable function.

Answer:Dell Inspiron 15R touchscreen not working: HID-compliant touch screen hidden

The greyed out entry represents a device not currently connected or not functioning.
Touchscreens are probably USB devices so you might check those.  My system uses a Input.inf file as the setup for the touchscreen, but I have a different system from yours.

I've had a moment, one that I thought was total brilliance, which turned out to be total failure. Fail stamped on my forehead... but worse then that.. Its not my computer (It's my Dads, but he's gonna be annoyed at me and I don't want to get in trouble, wahh). Please, please help me.

So.. Dads computer started coming up with this local profile corrupted thing and it logged him into a temporary profile or something like that, basically a blank rolling hills profile with nothing for icons but the very basic.. Somewhere I read to go to the directory for it and copy and paste the files into a new profile... So I did that, sorta.. Everything from the C:/-somethinggoeshere-/-somethinggoeshere-/David file.. See, I didn't actually copy it... I cut it.. Then forgetting I was using a temporary profile.. I made a folder onto the desktop and pasted it there, thinking wala ha ha ha this'll sort it.. I rebooted. Need I say I can't find all those things I cut and pasted...

Help? Please? Anyone...?

(Yes, I tried a system restore... but how lucky for me.. System restore won't go past the screen where you click next to restore to an earlier setting *gulp.*)

Answer:Local profile corrupted... Then I touched it...

Log in as Administrator. Go to Windows Explorer and under C:\Documents and Settings do you have a Temp profile? If so are the files there? If so, then create a new user profile. COPY the files into the new profile i.e: Desktop, Favorites, My Documents and the .pst file if you use Outlook for Email. Also copy any thing left in the old profile to the new profile. Log out of the Admin Profile and log in as the new user. If everything is there and satisfactory, you can log out and log back in as Admin and delete the temp and old profile.

First I must make it abundantly clear that what I did was supremely stupid, extremely stupid, insanely stupid, massively stupid, stupid stupid stupid!

Now, there is no reason to get into WHY, but in msconfig, under the boot.ini tab, I accidentally set MAXMEM to "64" where it should be 4096. Serious, accident. I have 4gb of RAM, running xp-64.

So when it starts up, it goes to the "Windows XP loading..." screen then it goes black, this is where it normally would actually go into windows but instead stays black. I can't start up in Safe Mode.

I was thinking of booting with the XP cd and repairing the install or restoring the system or something. Do I have any other choice?

Can you guys help?

I have a very capable T42 (3 yr old) that has recently started suffering a system crash (beeping and trying to reboot) if you move the laptop and sometimes if you even touch it with the slightest movement.  First the screen goes black, then it will try to reboot or just lock up and beep.  Its not a problem with the screen, Ive run it thru on my desktop monitor. It doesnt happen all the time, but it seems to be getting worse. ... and what good is a laptop thats immobile and prone to failure if you touch it. After it occurs I have to remove battery or power supply  wait a few minutes and then reboot.... and even then somethings it will just repeat same crash.  Its just outside 3 yr warranty. Lenovo says for $500-600 they will replace motherboard. (1) Any thoughts?(2) Do I want Lenovo to repair at this cost or simply buy a new machice for approx $1100?(3) If I replace it with a new machine would it be worth me spending a few hundred for a used motherboard and trying to rebuild it myself and have either (a) a second laptop or (b) a $200 boat anchor if I melt it in the process?  If I don't try to repair it (thru Lenovo or myself) what good is a laptop with a bad motherboard? Fudd

I have an annoying program with my custom build pc. The computer reboots randomly, with no warning, after I touch the mouse.

Heres specs:
OS windows 7 ultimate CPU AMD FX-8120 3.1 GHz 8-core Motherboard Gigabyte GA-990XA-UD3 990X AM3+ Memory corsair 2x4gb dd3 Graphics Card(s) radeon 7800 series
This problem has persisted after many clean installs with different OS. I've tried two versions of windows 7, and one version of windows 8.

The oddest thing is, that if I manage to open a game before it reboots, it will not reboot until that game has been closed. I've played all day with the computer without it ever rebooting, but as soon as I close that application, it will reboot in five seconds.

The problem has gotten very annoying, and lately I've had trouble to even start up a game before it reboots. The pc works fine in the safe mode with network so I'm able to post this.

So, does anyone know where to look at? I've thought about this a lot, and I think the problem might be in the chipset drivers. However I've downloaded the newest drivers from gigabyte's website, and the problem persists.

I've also looked in the event viewer, and it seems to give a critical error. This is what it says:
