Mozilla to Kill Off Firefox for Windows XP and Vista in June 2018

Question: Mozilla to Kill Off Firefox for Windows XP and Vista in June 2018

Mozilla to Kill Off Firefox for Windows XP and Vista in June 2018

Mozilla is one of the few companies that continue to support Windows XP, with its browser currently part of Firefox 52 ESR (Extended Support Release) channel.

Today, however, Mozilla announced that both Windows XP and Windows Vista are projected to lose Firefox support in June 2018, and users are recommended to upgrade to a newer version of Windows before this deadline.

With ESR support, Firefox is only getting security updates on Windows XP and Vista, but the browser isn?t receiving any of the new features that are available for the latest versions of the browser.

Windows XP still super-popular
This helps Windows XP users browse the web securely even though their operating system is no longer getting updates ? and the same in the case of the majority of browsers, including Internet Explorer, which doesn?t receive any new updates on XP.

?We are announcing June 2018 as the final end of life date for Firefox support on Windows XP and Vista. As one of the few browsers that continues to support Windows XP and Vista, Firefox users on these platforms can expect security updates until that date. Users do not need to take additional action to receive those updates,? Mozilla said.

Windows XP still has a market share of approximately 5 percent, and statistics point to a rather slow drop despite the lack of security updates. End of support was reached in April 2014 and since then Windows XP received just a single patch earlier this year when Microsoft rolled out an emergency update to address the WannaCry vulnerability.

XP, however, is mostly used in companies and organizations where other security systems have been implemented, including restrictions to block Internet connection and limited connectivity to internal networks. Of course, this doesn?t necessarily mean that these systems are completely hacker-proof, with an upgrade to supported Windows still the best choice to remain secure.Click to expand...

Preferred Solution: Mozilla to Kill Off Firefox for Windows XP and Vista in June 2018

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The next version of Mozilla Firefox could be released in the last week of June, as the company moves to an accelerated release schedule.

According to a draft document, posted by Mozilla?s Rob Sayre and spotted by ConceivablyTech, a single Firefox release will take 16 weeks, a far cry from the twelve months it took the company to get Firefox 4 to release candidate stage. The final version of that browser is due for release March 22.Click to expand...

Mozilla yesterday reiterated that it's still working on silent updates for Firefox, and said it should have the   Chrome-like service in place by early June.    In a sweeping summary of 2011's accomplishments and an outline of plans for 2012, Robert Nyman, a Mozilla technical evangelist, listed silent updates as one the projects the company will finish this year.  "Updates will now be downloaded and installed silently in the background," wrote Nyman in a Wednesday post to the Hacks Mozilla blog. "Silent updates are currently planned to land in Firefox 13."Mozilla unloads a Firefox upgrade every six weeks -- it launched Firefox 11 just two days ago -- and has Firefox 13's release on the calendar for June 5, 2012.Full story at Computerworld here:   http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9225235/Mozilla_will_start_Firefox_silent_updates_in_June

Answer:Mozilla will start Firefox silent updates in June

In my mind once the nightly builds with the silent feature built in start rolling out someone will tinker with it enough to write an extension that turns it on/off without affecting FireFox performance...So i'm not really worried.

source: Mozilla Will Kill Legacy Firefox Add-Ons in Exactly Three Months

On November 14 Mozilla will take the biggest gamble in its long history when the organization will ship Firefox 57, the first version of its browser that will stop supporting legacy Firefox add-ons.

This means that starting with Firefox 57 the browser will support only new add-ons written on top of the newer WebExtensions SDK.

All legacy Firefox add-ons written on the old XUL-based Add-Ons SDK will stop working.

Old legacy add-ons will still exist on AMO
In a blog post last week, Mozilla said it will continue to allow developers to upload and list legacy Firefox add-ons on its add-ons portal (AMO), but they'll only show up for users with older browsers and buried in search results under newer WebExtensions-compatible add-ons.

Changes are already being rolled out to AMO and Firefox 57 (currently Firefox's Nightly edition).

The release of Firefox 57 is the end of a two-year-long project that started in August 2015 when Mozilla announced the new WebExtensions API that would eventually replace the older Add-Ons SDK.

The new WebExtensions SDK is also compatible with the universal WebExtensions SDK implemented in Chromium and related browsers such as Brave, Chrome, Opera, and Vivaldi.Click to expand...

Hello friends. I have had to install Firefox on my Vista laptop which already has IE9. This installation solved the online audio problems I was having with IE9. However Firefox started competing with IE for who becomes default browser! Even though I've chosen IE9 as default, Firefox imposed itself as default by automatically opening up some webpages that I tried opening. When I started my laptop today Firefox had turned all my pdf documents on hardrive into Firefox documents by replacing the Adobe logo with the Firefox logo! Why did this happen? Does Firefox interfere with the running of other programs? Please help. Thanks.

Answer:How does Mozilla Firefox behave when installed over MS Vista OS?

Sound like you may have some form of infection on your laptop.
Would suggest that you run any malware programmes you may have, and see if that/they finds anything. Perhaps run ADWCleaner or a similar program. At present I am using a beta version of Malwarebytes Anti-Root Kit with good success rating.
I run Firefox, Chrome and IE on a vista laptop without problems. I select the default browser to use, and not the laptop by un-ticking the relevant boxes requesting default.

Hi - How do I transfer Firefox over to Vista and keep my bookmarks? Thanks - TM

Answer:Mozilla Firefox bookmarks transfer to Vista?

Easiest way (There may be better) is to go to the Program Files - Mozilla Firefox - defaults - Profile.
Copy the file and paste the file "bookmarks html" over to Vista, to the same path, but also to Users - username - Appdata - Roaming - mozilla - Profiles, and the first folder under profiles
Another way is to click "Bookmarks" on the menu, then organise bookmarks. Then under "File" on the menu, you will find an import option. You can then select "From File" and follow the same path as above.

Source : Olhar Digital: Notícia: Navegador ultrarrápido da Mozilla será lançado para testes em junho

full article and more detailed in English : Mozilla's super speedy new browser will be available for testing in June

Three years ago Mozilla announced that began to develop a new architectural model for browsers, one that would front of WebKit (present in Chrome) and it would be much faster. For only now the project has gained a release date - although far.

The product is called Servant and his first version for public testing should be released in June. It will be an alpha available for Linux, OS X, Windows and Android, reports the blog of the initiative.

The Servant has been built on the basis of Rust programming language that Samsung helped Mozilla to develop in 2013. As explained by The Next Web, the browser will focus on performance, security, modularity and parallel - meaning that its components They operate independently, which helps improve the performance and stability.

Even though the news has finally received public appearance forecast, the alpha phase is only one of several that usually precede the official release. It should take months after it until the product is finally available for everyday use.

Mozilla does not talk much about the project, so do not know, for example, the foundation aims to unite it with Firefox - which runs the risk of losing market if the Servant win public.

I do not know if this is related to the Askbar or not.I have run virus scans using Norton and MalwareBytes Anti-Malware, then I have uninstalled, deleted, and reinstalled Firefox and Google Chrome. Hi People,

I'm having the WORST time starting Firefox in the last several days. Its taken me about 15-20 minutes to just launch it and when it does launch it crashes. In this latest episode I've had to restart Win7 three times just to get FF to open. In the meantime I can launch Explorer easily.

What's going on? Is Microsoft up to its old 'Browser-War' tricks again, like it did with Netscape?

Mozilla Persona had one of its first conference Australian outings at AusCERT 2013, with software engineer on the project, New Zealand-based Francois Marier's tutorial on the architecture of the identity project.

While it doesn't entirely eliminate passwords, Mozilla is hoping Persona will at least persuade those building new sites not to deploy their own password infrastructure, instead using Persona as their default sign-on technology.

As far as it can be accomplished, Marier said, we need to get rid of passwords: they're mostly insecure, they provide overheads both on users and site managers. Any site that does a bad job of securing passwords is a ?huge externality? on the rest of the Internet, he said, since it's almost certain that if passwords are lost in a breach, some users will have recycled their password at some other site.

To encourage adoption, Mozilla has made Persona easy to deploy. All that's required for the site owner is to load the Persona Javascript, load the login and logout callouts, and add the buttons to the site.

The buttons then popup the login, which negotiates not with Mozilla Persona, but with whatever identity the user chooses, using an assertion process: instead of providing a user ID and password stored in a site's database, users merely have to prove ownership of an existing account (such as a Gmail account). That means users don't have to demonstrate their identity to Persona, but rather t... Read more

Hello all !
I have never posted before, but have certainly learned a great deal from all you experts out there.  I am wondering if there is someone out here who can post a tutorial on how to get (or enable) I believe is the correct term, firefox to run java in it's browser.  I have everything loaded as far as the latest java, and the console settings, etc. but I cannot get firefox to recognize java...it always says   "you need a plugin to to view this"...For security reasons, ..Mozilla turned off the plugin which worked so well before...in my opinion.  I have an older version of firefox on my laptop, and am fortunate to have the plugins already installed there, but I am unable to find them for the new firefox.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!  Thanks!  Robert

Another Mozilla article to take a look at is the system requirements page .  At the top of that page you can choose the Add-ons tab then select the topic that fits best.

Hope this information is of some help to you.

I have been using Mozilla Firefox for a couple of months now. I also XP firewall and while I have a port scan done which reported a healthy setup I was wondering if there was any security issues when using XP with a non-Microsoft browser? Also does Firefox have any built in anti Spyware?

Answer:Windows XP Firewall and Mozilla Firefox

There are more security issues using IE and OE than using a non MS product.Firefox and all other Mozilla-based products are more secure. Why? Here is a list of the most important reasons:It is not integrated with Windows, which helps prevent viruses and hackers from causing damage if they somehow manage to compromise Firefox. There is no support for VBScript and ActiveX, two technologies which are the reasons for many IE security holes. No spyware/adware software can automatically install in Firefox just by visiting a web site.Firefox doesn't use Microsoft's Java VM, which has a history of more flaws than other Java VMs.

I realize that I am a little late to the party with respects to reviewing Firefox 3.6, but there is a reason for this; I wanted to give the new version some real time to impress me, especially since I have always been a fan of IE8 (I know, I know). After a couple weeks of solid home use, I honestly have to say that I was impressed with the new version. When it comes to internet browsers, there are as many options as there are websites, it sometimes seems. And I do realize that there are casual users and fanboys, who take their browser more seriously than life itself. I?m not comparing Firefox to other options (okay, a little bit) and I?m not saying one is better than the others (okay, maybe I will), so keep your claws in fanboys, this is just a friendly review and my opinion.

Hey! There's absolutely NO reason to be ashamed. IE8 is an excellent, and safe browser, and NO one should be faulted, or feel bad for using it. The choice of browser has NOTHING to do with security or performance anymore - and only a matter of personal preference for the "look and feel" of the product.

After all, regardless the browser of choice, we still have to practice safe computing by keeping our systems updated, patched, scanned and blocked, and we still must avoid risky practices - like illegal filesharing.

I have followed the download instructions and when I try to run the reg fix I get a registry editor message that some keys are open by the system or other processes. I have tried multiple times (per instructions), with no success. Also the malware in my desktop bottom toolbar and continually gives me pop-ups even when I don't try to open my Explorer. I have tried to run from the fix from both flash drive and desktop. Not sure where to go from here.

Thanks, Mark

I'm running Windows XP and like to use Mozilla Firefox browser, but it will not play videos on news sites most of the time. I can see the videos in Internet Explorer, but not Firefox. I also have a XP and use Firefox. I had a similar problem with hearing audio streams. It was because I had pop-ups blocked (ocassionally pop-ups are useful). Make sure that Firefox is not blocking the pop-up window containing the video.

I recently switched from IE to Firefox because I was tired of all the holes in IE that practically shut my computer down. I read somewhere, however, that Windows Update only works with IE. My question: If I have made Firefox my default browser, will my automatic windows update feature still work in the background?

Answer:Mozilla Firefox, Internet Exployer and Windows Update

Yes, make sure you do not uninstall IE, you will need it for updates etc..

Mozilla unveils Windows theme/UI update for Firefox 3.7/4.0

Posted by Adrian Kingsley-Hughes @ 12:18 pm

Mozilla have unveiled some mockups of the Windows theme/UI updates that is scheduled to hit Firefox users over two stages - 3.7 and 4.0.

Stephen Horlander, a designer and contributor to the Mozilla project unveiled some details of the refresh.

Cornerstone to the revamp is the App Button that appears in the top-left of the mockup. Here?s what Horlander has to say about the origin of this new addition:The new proposed approach to this problem is an App Button which is similar to the single menu approach taken by Windows 7 native applications (Paint, WordPad) and by MS Office.

Answer:Mozilla Firefox - Font size and change in windows

Good question, in windows, it just picks up default win style. Maybe some other FF theme changes it.
PS. So you use Menu Bar too ? Many don't even know it exists on FF.

Hello to everyone! :-)

My name is Manolis and I come from Athens, Greece. Firstly, I would like to mention that I don't know much about computers so whoever is kind enough to answer this thread, please keep it simple. Thanks! :-)

I have Windows7, I run Mozilla Firefox and I use Avira Free Antivirus.

During the last few months when I was browsing different pages I saw that some words were underlined. When I rolled over the underlining I realized it was an advertisment saying "Click to continue -> By CouponDropDown". It usually advertised Ipads or some kind of online casino games. I didn't pay attention but it started getting worse. More and more words were underlined in this way. As if this were not enough, pop up windows started to appear saying that it was some kind of survey on behalf of Mozilla.

I realized it was probably a virus so I visited the Mozilla Firefox support page where they advised me to download the following malware scanning programmes: Malware Bytes AntiMalware Free, Superantispyware Portable Scanner, Microsoft Safety Scanner, Anti-Rootkit Utility TDSS killer, and ADW cleaner. I ran all of these programmes and many viruses were found and removed. The problem diminished temporarily but then I started seeing again underlined words and pop up Windows.

Is there anything else I could do?

Thank you in advance!

Answer:Windows7/Mozilla Firefox/ Pop- up windows and underlined words

Updates for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (28/04/11)
(KB2515325)
(KB2522422)
(KB2492386)
(KB2488113)
(KB982018)

Mozilla Firefox (or Google Chrome) will not open after this update - all you see is a continuous blank white screen with 'connecting' at top and 'Looking up www.google.ie' at the bottom from Firefox

Can only get internet access through Internet Explorer (64-bit).
When you set a system restore back before these updates were added Firefox works perfectly

Answer:Have recent Windows Updates blocked Mozilla Firefox?

Internet Explorer (64-bit) is now the only web browser that works and it cannot be the default web browser i.e. you can't open a link from an e-mail etc.

We have been building a version of Firefox for Windows Mobile for quite a while, with the expectation that Microsoft would be doubling down in the mobile market and hoping that they would put out a great new mobile operating system. We?ve been following the Windows Phone 7 announcements quite closely for the last few weeks, and had one of our developers in attendance at MIX last week. We know that the underlying platform for Windows Phone 7 is Windows CE 6, which is a big step up from the kernel used by Windows Mobile 6.5. Windows CE 6 is a platform that we have been developing towards, and already run well on, leaving us well positioned to have an awesome browser on Windows Phone 7.
While we think Windows Phone 7 looks interesting and has the potential to do well in the market, Microsoft has unfortunately decided to close off development to native applications. Because of this, we won?t be able to provide Firefox for Windows Phone 7 at this time. Given that Microsoft is staking their future in mobile on Windows Mobile 7 (not 6.5) and because we don?t know if or when Microsoft will release a native development kit, we are putting our Windows Mobile development on hold.
The work on this project that the community and our engineering, QA, build, and automation teams has done has been great. I expect us to be able to use much of the knowledge and work for other platforms. We will be disabling the builds and test automation shortly, and developers shouldn?t worry if t... Read more

hello everyone.

the family computer here at my house has been suffering these stop errors for quite a while now. I've been looking around for some information, trying to see if I could resolve it myself, but as I understand it, these errors are kind of broad-sweeping. so here's what it says in my System Event Viewer:

Error code 10000050, parameter1 f16cf000, parameter2 00000001, parameter3 f76755d5, parameter4 00000000.

also, the blue screen pointed to the file Ntfs.sys. I'm guessing that's "NTFS" as in the file system. does this mean my hard drive is on its way out?

I did a fresh install of WinXP a few months ago when I couldn't find any other solution... that doesn't seem to have killed the monster.

EDIT: I don't use the computer as often as the rest of my family, and they're not very tech-oriented, but they tell me that these errors seem to happen only while using Mozilla Firefox.

thanks in advance to anyone who can help me out.

Operating System - XP

Over the last few months, the Windows Explorer on my laptop has become excruciatingly slow. Simply trying to move to an adjacent directory can take minutes, specially with Mozilla Firefox.

Related / unrelated - I have seen CPU/memory max out as well - though not always.

I am unsure if it is a virus issue or is it something that has to do with windows explorer issues, which I have seen a few threads on on the net.

I woud appreciate any advice you might have.

Thanks!

On an irregular basis, sometimes 4 or 5 times a day or sometimes once a week, when I start up Mozilla Firefox it will only start in safe mode. I have to restart the computer (HP TouchSmart desk top) to get it to run correctly. If I try Internet explorer, when it's doing this, it keeps opening up new windows until it won't open up anymore.

I have all my updates up to date, anybody got any ideas. I run Norton antivirus which also automatically updates.

Thanks in advance Mike

After pledging to a touch-centric version of the browser for Windows 8, releasing a beta, then backpedaling on that promise, then resuming development for a Windows 10 version (again!), Mozilla seems to have, hopefully, come to a decision this time about Microsoft's modern offerings. Now, they are forging ahead on the development of what they claim will be an "independent and high-performing alternative to the stock browser [ Microsoft Edge]."

I feel defeated. I cannot resolve this issue.
I have random new windows that open in both IE and Firefox, mostly to either Google search page or Yahoo home page.
I cannot get rid of references to AVG being installed in dds. I have removed it with opswat's AppRemover.exe.
I would like to know not only what I should do next, but why. I cannot find any information on what the kernel code sections mean from the gmer log. This is the only place I see any odd stuff.
What am I missing?
I am reinstalling AVG following this post.

This is an interesting surprise from Mozilla.
Just recently I switched from 32-bit ESR to 64-bit ESR and so far I like it. Haven't had any problems.
I have used Cyberfox and Pale Moon 64-bit versions which have been available for some time, but the official stable 64-bit Firefox is less than a year from its initial release.

Mozilla Reveals its Firefox 64-bit for Windows plan

Upgrading from 32-bit to 64-bit is very easy and downgrading from 64 to 32 follows the same process.

After complaining that Microsoft has made choosing a browser other than its own Edge too difficult with Windows 10, Firefox officials have taken browser-choice into their own hands.

Firefox 40 for Windows 10, made generally available on August 11, includes new "support materials to show you how to restore or choose Firefox as your default browser in Windows 10."

The new Firefox for Windows 10 goes further. When Windows 10 users look to the Cortana search box built into the task bar, web searches done from that search box will "show results in the default search engine you choose in Firefox," rather than defaulting to Bing, Firefox officials said.

Hello all,
This is my first post and I hope I am following all protocols correctly. Being the typical guy I have been trying to solve this issue on my own for months and I am unsuccessful. My issue is I have a Dell Inspiron 640m and currently running Windows XP. Internet Explorer will pop up a new window every minute and eventually freezing. I usually use Mozilla Firefox but I have the same issue there where it actually pops up new windows and tabs that have links to antivirus websites. The popups are a lot more frequent on firefox than IE, so I've been using that more often. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I have Hijack this if I need to attach a log of what comes up. I can hardly get any work done on this laptop due to the annoying pop ups, please help!
With gratitude,
saxgrove

Hi. I've heard great things about this site and that you guys are able to help someone with just about any malware/virus problem.

I've just recently downloaded the latest version of Mozilla Firefox and it was working fine, until one day I found that I keep getting Adult friend finder, a request to log into Facebook, Fiance Finder and Travians( a game of some sort) pop ups. But these pop ups appear in new Firefox windows as though I've requested to visit these sites. No matter how much I exit these sites when ever I surf the web they pop up again.

I have Adblock Plus, SuperAnti Spyware, SpyBot Search and Destroy, Norton 360 and Malicious Software Removal Tool, I scanned my computer about 5,000 times but it only finds a few tracking cookies and some adware which aren't causing my pop ups problem.

Can you guys please help me out, I'm desperate here, because these pop ups are way annoying.

Firefox has been freezing up on me, and when I close it down, I get a bluescreen error. It also happens a lot of the time when I close Firefox down normally. This was happening before I updated to the latest version of FF. I am running Windows XP, and have recently started using ZoneAlarm and Avast on my system.

Answer:Firefox closes = bluescreen error? (Moved for the mozilla/Firefox Forum)

Hi,

Can you give us the error in full that you are getting. Also, I would check and make sure that ZoneAlarm and Avast are allowing FF to connect to the internet.

Cheers!

I have 4 browsers on my computer: Internet Explorer 8, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Opera. I am trying to listen to some MP3 files on a website, and all of the browsers, except for IE 8, told me to download the Realplayer Plugin. So I did, and when I tried to listen to the MP3 file, Realplayer will automatically enable this "Autoupdate Helper" thing and check for updates. So I let it check for updates, but then it'll say "There are no updates..." and just stop there. The file won't play! I click play again, and the same thing happens.

Internet Explorer is the only browser smart enough to open the MP3 files on the web page using Quicktime (the website actually tells you to use Quicktime to open the files) but it doesn't load the Youtube videos that are embedded on the site. There's a X on the top left corner of the section where the video is suppose to be.

Now I'm stuck! I want to view all the contents on one page with one browser! But none of the browsers will actually work properly!

So the main problem is:

1. The MP3 files won't load in Chrome, Firefox, and Opera using Quicktime.

Chrome is the only browser I use frequently, and the others are basically backup. IS THERE ANY SOLUTION TO THIS!?!?!?

Thanks everyone!

I know other users have had issues with this but I didn't know if I could follow the solutions for their problem or not.

(Not sure what information is helpful so I'll start and the top and be brief)
For my job I am required to sometimes go to 'suspect websites' and normally Norton will catch anything before it even has a chance to download. Sadly, two weeks ago I did download a file called Trojan.Gen (or at least that is what Norton called it). Almost immediately Norton caught and removed all threats but I knew I wasn't going to get off that easy.

For a few days everything seemed fine but shortly after I started seeing attack messages from Norton from \device\harddiskvolume1\program files\mozilla firefox\firefox.exe, the IP and web address changes.

I couldn't tell if it was doing anything to my computer and have since been trying to remove it with no luck with Norton. Now, my web pages are being redirected to either a fake search page or a Pay Per Click page, if I click a link in Google.

Norton and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Free are telling me that they are not detecting anything.

I did read the preparation guide, so I hope I have all the information that is needed.

I want to thank you in advance for any help that I can get and I understand that this is a process. I appreciate your time!
-Eve

I don't know if my problem is Firefox or WordPress but I thought I'd try here first.
I use WordPress to publish articles and usually copy and paste from the finished article in the Articles forum to WordPress but since I reinstalled Win 7 this no longer works as paste is no longer an option when I right click in WordPress, or at least in the particular part that I need it to. I can, however, do it in Internet Explorer, but images aren't copied over, which they used to be. I've tried all the usual things like clearing the cache, but nothing has worked. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Answer:Is this Win 7 or Firefox at fault? Moved from Mozilla/Firefox browsers

Hi,
I am using Win-7 too but I haven't used IE. So my suggestion is to, try another browser for the same purpose and then see the effects (I feel firefox is well suited for the purpose). If you are getting same problems then, you are missing with some features of Win-7 otherwise, it is the website issue.

Hi Guys

I am new to this forum and have limited knowledge of computers.
I was using Firefox version 2 and was very happy until I was requested to download version 3. Now I seem to have endless crashes and keep getting told Firefox has a problem & needs to close. Up to 5 x a day.

This is very frustrating.
This happens with avg, facebook ,all internet functions.

I have spybot running and avg and says there are no problems.

We had a power failure earlier yesterday and when I switched back on Microsoft suggested I check the C drive as there was a problem -but that seems to have sorted itself out.-probably due to not closing down properly.

So can you help me with detailed instructions on how to fix forefox or totally remove it and install from the beginning or is there major problems with that version 3 .1 ?

Thanks
Carol

I've noticed that the last several new versions of iTunes (and Quicktime of course since it's impossible to un-bundle) have been screwing around with my Firefox alot. For a large number of file types it decides to open them automatically with the Quicktime plug-in without any indication during the install or opening the file that I want to do that.

Does anyone know how to keep this from happening short of editing the default actions for each file type? I can do that obviously but it's a pain and I shouldn't have to put up with this crap.

Answer:Can I kill that Quicktime plug-in for Firefox?

WHAT? You mean you keep downloading the budled version?

http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/standalone.html

They've always offered a stand-alone version. They just make it a pain in the ass to access via their site.

Once you've installed QT with your own filetime preferences, I believe it honours them on subsequent upgrades. Just edit the filetypes within QT and you're all set.

Dear List:
We are having Vista, browser Monzilla difficulties. We'd appreciate the communities help.

We updated the version but always receive nagging "shop websites" pop ups and "your media player is outdated, download a new program" browser openinigs. One clicks them off, and the browser goes to the requested page.

I have run every Security Essentials, scan  tool and spyware removal app recommended.
ie. stinger, antispyware, malwarebytes, cwshredder, rkill, unhide, tdskiller, spybot, adaware, ccleaner, micsecurity essentials.

Is the popup program embedded in monzilla. IE doesn't have this issue. Running "permissions mgr" in monzilla stops it but you need to click to let any site open, it asks permission each time.

Fresh versions of monzilla don't cure it.
Any help would be great , thanks

My friend has had this machine since the middle of last year. Updates have been failing to install or even download since SP1 failed to install. I have included a Screenshot of the last time any updates were applied. As you can see there is an SP1 failure and the security update before that was the last successful actual Windows update to be applied. There is also another SP1 fail a few days before that too. The only updates after the SP1 failure are Defender updates and Office updates and these are all successful.

I have tried the instructions in http://www.vistax64.com/software-too...air-tools.html but none of those work (the first step is non-existant and when I try and install the Windows Update agent it just responds with the usual 0x8000FFFF (Catastrophic error i believe code). After doing the manual reset of the Windows Update and going to the inbuilt Windows Update it now comes up with the 0x8000FFFF error and says it can't search for updates which it was doing before. If this is the result of the failed SP1 update, is there anyway to remove the partially failed installed components of it? Any help would be great.

On the odd occasion the hard drives seem to 'spin up' causing a delay in either watching movies or doing anything relating to copying.

I always use Firefox. I must have picked up some sort of spyware, as my Google results started to redirect me to ad sites. I used Gooredfix.exe, and it seemed to fix the problem. Also have used Malwarebytes multiple times. Now, the Firefox process won't end when I close the program, and I can't kill it using Task Manager. I also can't open up Firefox after closing it down. I've tried removing Firefox completely (using Revo uninstaller) and reinstalling Firefox, but it makes no difference, still hangs up on me. I've tried everything on Firefox's help pages, and nothing makes a difference. Computer is also ridiculously slow on bootup and shutdown. Any ideas about what's going on? Thanks.

My firefox, IE, and Safari will all freeze up... and say loading for like..... EVER... I will close Firefox... and try to reopen it, but it says that its still running and blah blah blah.. so I pull up task manager and sure enough there it is. I then try to end task, REPEATEDLY... no effect. I then reboot, I run spybot S&D and Avast, neither of which find the source of the problem. I then run Wise Disk Cleaner 4. low and behold, I have like..... 500+ of these MSS***** files * = a number, they go in sequential order down the list. The first time I ran wise disk cleaner after having this problem there were over 4000 files found... I normally get about 400 files everytime, and generally 256 of them cannot be deleted. Aside from the plethora of MSS files... I get a whole gang of new symantec files that I never had come up in the wise cleaner before. I went to the folder that contains the MSS files, and opened it. While that folder was opened, I started firefox, and bang... those files started popping up..... about 1 ever 2 seconds. Okay.... so that is the info that I have to give you. Now its time for me to tell you how I think I caused this problem.... and yes, I have learned my lesson, I was trying to get an ISO copy of the Sims 3 to see what its like.... big mistake... not gonna do that again.... dumb dumb dumb... Answer:Firefox stalling out... keeps running in task manager even after trying to kill it...

Instead of posting a new topic I figured I would add a reply to my initial post... it has been about 5 days since my first post so I fear I may have been lost in the madness that is the forums. My issues have changed since my last post as well. I have managed to get firefox mostly off of my computer, however.... my IE and Safari are still only good for a few pages before they fail...... I am not sure exactly what is happening. I will be going along, slowly yet still able to use the browsers and view web pages as I am this one right now. After several different pages however, they stop loading up, I have to reboot the computer and then I can search the web for a short time again...... rinse wash repeat. I have done some cleaning, I have found at least one suspect file by doing a google of the files name ((( C:\Windows\system32\jusched.exe ))) and it brought me back here the the file database where it said it was a bad file and that I don't want it. I followed the instructions to remove it. This was to run autoruns.exe in safe mode.... Well...... that doesn't work, as neither autoruns OR Hijackthis found the file while running in safe mode. I don't even think Hijackthis found it untill I opened IE..... I think something is going on where whatever this problem is... it only starts up once I open an internet browser. Also...... I noticed the other day, when I was having this issue..... that my CPU usage was at 100% ..... I have never seen that ..... EVER.... And ... Read more

What's the difference, and why would a company create two different web browsers.

I've never felt the need for anything other than IE because I never get pop ups ( elite internet browsing skills ), but I am feeling like I want Firefox.

Why would I use Mozilla over Firefox?

Answer:Mozilla vs Mozilla's Firefox?

Hello guys, logging to this site after a long hiatus (good streak of problem-free PC!)

I recently bought a Acer Q302LA laptop and installed many software on it (mainly GOG games, Sophos, WinRAR, virtual clone drive, nothing illegal or dubious). Not sure if this is relevant, but somehow I downloaded Trovi search engine, but I uninstalled it via add/remove programs, changed homepage settings and search engine in Firefox and IE, and ran MBAM, so I believe I have removed it completely.

Now my problem is this: I noticed that I am having trouble with both firefox and IE, in that I will have multiple instances of both in task manager that I am unable to force kill process, giving me message that access is denied. As a result, I cannot open new firefox after the last one is closed. In addition, when I was able to open firefox after restarting my PC, both firefox and IE take forever to load pages, with spinning logos on the tabs. What is perplexing is that sometimes these web browsers linger in task manager after restarting, even if I didn't start these programs.

So as of now I have 8+ IE and 2+ firefox in my task manager that I cannot kill, and excruciating slow loading of web pages or inability to open new firefox without restarting.

I ran both MBAM and Sophos, didn't detect any malware/virus. What do I do next?? Am I in right forum??

Thank you for you help!!

Answer:Can't kill multiple firefox and IE in task manager, hang process, slow loading

The task manager should show a process for each tab in IE and for each separate window for Firefox. I would suggest uninstalling Firefox and re-installing, to see if the problem returns.

Within IE, go to "Manage add-ons" by clicking on the cog icon in the top right hand corner (Tools (ALT + X)) and look through the extensions, toolbars, etc., to see if anything suspicious is there (disable anything you are unsure about).

just asking since it seems someone may have sabotaged the pc I'm looking at. I'm trying to get some personal files off the hd before I try a re-install of vista. Looking at the hd in a boot utility, I can see the recycle bin, a folder with a mpg file in it and a couple others but everything else is gone. Could the hd be toast? could I even look at it if was?
