CPU usage at 100% from the simplest of things.

Question: CPU usage at 100% from the simplest of things.

Hi there,

I am having an issue with my CPU usage issue on my pc. CPU usage spikes up from the simplest of things. For example, scrolling on Facebook takes my CPU from 10% to 100%. I also cannot do simple things like watch a youtube video in fullscreen without very noticeable video latency.

this started when I went to open Player Unknown battlegrounds and a memory error came up saying it couldn't open due to some memory error. I then shut off my computer and took out the ram and put them back in. since then my CPU usage has been spiking from anything I do.

Help would be much appreciated!

Preferred Solution: CPU usage at 100% from the simplest of things.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

hi there!

i'm tearing my hair out over what i thought was the simplest of things. sbs...and shared folders... damn this is embarassing!

i've created all of the users, and i've also created security groups for each part of the business and each user is a member of their respective group. each group has a folder on the server, and there is an additional 'sharing' folder to which everyone should have access.

when i come to share them out i have two options - 'share permissions' and 'security'. it doesn't matter how much i tweak the settings i cannot for the life of me get it working how i want it. all i want is for the members of the security groups to have full access to their corresponding folder, and everyone to have full access to the additional 'sharing' folder.

i think i've tried every combination of adding the security groups to both the 'share permissions' and the 'security' with every combination of boxes being ticked. they either just cannot see the folder, or they can see it but not add to it, or they can add to it but not delete from it, or they can see files but not modify anything they didn't create...the list goes on.

help, and please be gentle!

many thanks.

Answer:help! having a mare with the simplest of things: shared folders...

for share permissions:
domain admins = full control
domain users = full control
remove the "everyone" group

for security:
domain admins = full control
security group = full control
remove the domain users/users groups

That should take care of it. Sounds like you have conflicting permissions and the end result is users getting most restricted settings on the shares.

Hey Guys,
I'm going insane over here. I initially noticed today that my PC fan was running like there was a load on the CPU. After looking at the task manager, I found out the CPU had a very constant usage of about 40% when everything was closed and the cursor had that little circle by it the entire time like it was waiting for a process. I went into processes and closed just about everything I could possibly close and it was still a constant 30-40% on all 4 cores (I have a Phenom II X4 965). First thing I tried was a restart and that works for about 5-10 minutes. After that, something starts up and the 30-40% CPU utilization comes back. I scan for viruses and malware with Security Essentials and Malwarebytes (only two programs I use) and they both find nothing.

So I started doing tons of google-foo on just about every process I can find on the top of the usage charts/resource monitor. I find a forum suggesting it was Security Essentials so I uninstalled it, nothing. Forum suggesting it was Windows Defender so I disabled it, nothing. I found forums suggesting to do this and that with no avail. I did a system restore to a point a few days back and it still happens. I checked the memory and the hard disk for errors and both passed. I literally cannot figure out how to solve this beyond just doing a format and reinstall, which I don't want to do if possible. I have quite a bit of stuff on this computer that I'd like not to have to lose or move around.

I appreciate any he... Read more

Answer:Constant CPU Usage - Have tried so many things

Scan with Malwarebytes
Run a full antivirus scan. Although you said that you did this. Update and try it again
Scan with Eset online. This is really a good one finds a lot.
Then when in task manager, be sure that the box that says show for all users is checked in lower left.

My CPU usage will spike to about 70% for no reason whenever I am on the computer and even when I am not. I will come back and see it has spiked. Explorer is also running twice for some reason.

Firefox and SimCity recently stopped working. Firefox will open, but then it immediately freezes. SimCity will show the splash screen, then the screen will go black, like its trying to load. Then it will freeze. So, I ran my Trend Micro virus protection. It found nothing. I tried to download Ad-Aware and Spybot, and both gave me an error message when I tried to open them. I assume that's because of a virus of some sort. Hello minidoxigirli and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. I do not see anything obvious in the log so let's do a little standard cleanupand have one of these files checked out.Download CCleaner and install it. If you cannot download it to this machine then download it to a different machine and put it on a disk to get it to this machine.Start CCleaner and click on the Run Cleaner button in the lower right-hand corner. When it is finished close CCleaner.Let's also have one of these files out. Go to the Jotti's malware scan page and use the buttons at the top of the page to browse to this file(s) on your hard drive to submit for a scan:C:\WINDOWS\IECheck.exeSeveral scanning engines will be used to check the file for any threats. Please post the results of the scans back here along with a new HijackThis log.Cheers.OT

Hello everyone!

Lately my computer has been booting very slow. When it gets to the desktop i still need to wait 1-2 minutes before i can connect to the internet, open my computer etc.It totally takes about 7 minutes before i can do anything, and that's annoying!

I also noticed that my CPU usage was through the roof.Random processes were consuming the cpu, including svchost.exe, but only at startup.Randomly i have cpu spikes,it goes up to 80% and then drops immediatly to 10%.

I have tried various fixes like registry cleaners, defragmenters and registry defragmenters.Still no luck.

i googled reinstall fresh windows xp and every page gives me different ways of reinstalling

how do i do it i want a fresh install like its a new pc

its really doing my head in as i dont want to buy the cd and then am not able to do what i want

* i do not have the drivers for any of my pc componenets such as motherboard etc as it cam preinstalled

bios boot from cd ???boot from disk ?? reformat?? start up disk

please in simple steps delete everything off my pc and using the xp cd what would i need to do to install windows whats all this about create a boot disk ..bios i dont know anything im complete newbie but i want to do it my self and you guys please help

thanx

Answer:simplest way to reinstall

(assuming you don't have onboard raid, in which case these instructions will be much longer)

In BIOS, set the CD as first boot decive. Insert CD, restart. Skip the repair option, delete all the partitions, create a new partition, reformat with NTFS (just follow the instructions on the screen). This will utterly destroy any data you had on the system, by the way. After that, just follow the screens until it's done.

Once the machines up (antivirus in, updates installed), hunt down any drivers that are missing. XP will likely get it running using default drivers, so you can track down chipset drivers later.

To begin with I will apologize if there is an answer somewhere else, I looked through seven pages but did not see the answer I need, which seems to be the most simple. With that said, my problem is that I can't seem to get my 2 computers connected, heres the information on each:

Computer1:
HP "base"
AMD AthlonXP 3200+ 2.19 GHZ
1.25 gig ram
Nvidia 7600 gfx card
Nvidia Nforce Network Adapter
Windows XP Pro

Computer 2:
Dell Dimension DE051
Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 2.53 GHz
512 RAM
Intel(R) 82865G Graphics Controller
Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection
Windows XP Home

I've tried just hooking them up together but it didn't work so I checked both computers ipconfig to see that the dell didn't even have an ip adress,
I updated the driver for it and still nothing, my HP however did have an ip adress until I restarted, here's what the ip configs say now.

Computer 1:
Ethernet Adapter Local Area Connection:
Media state: Disconnected

PPP Adapter MSN Explorer:
IP Adress: 4.161.147.88
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.255
Default Gateway: 4.161.147.88

Computer 2:
Ethernet Adapter Local Area Connection:
Media State: Media disconnected

IP routing is enabled on HP but not on the Dell, if you need any more info please ask, I'm lost, I thought I'd tried everything, I just dont know what to do, after this I have to ask about my graphics card lol, help me out please.

Is it possible to connect 2 pc's together using serial and/or parallel cables, or would I need networking cables such as the 10base2/f type?thanks

Answer:Simplest way to connect 2 pc's together??

a direct cable connection, for which you'll need a special cable. Usually these cables have both serial and parallel connectors at each end - be sure you use the same connector type on both computers. In Windows XP go to Start/all programs/accessories/communications and click on the New connection icon. Then follow the prompts and select the option to connect your computer directly to another.

I have an x120e that's a few years old, works fine but is slow as mollasses.  I want to do a fresh install of the OS, and want to do it in a way that brings the fewest headaches.  I see there is a recovery partition but I have no idea what that is for.  I have googled this and seen suggestions but those ways seem to eliminate the built-in Lenovo functionality like the f keys and such.  Can someone point me to the easiest way to reinstall to speed up the machine without having to track down drivers and Lenovo-specific add-ons? Love this machine, by the way.

For the life of me I cannot get my main machine to talk to the machine on my network that has the printer connected to it. Its funny because I have my secondary machine sitting right next to this hunk of junk and it can see the computer with the printer just fine.

Instead of doing what its supposed to, my main machine throws up some fucking ridiculous error about how it cant find the computer with the printer. I have all the file sharing things enabled. My two machines are both XP. The printer machine is 98.

Like I said my secondary machine and the printer machine can see each other just fine, but this big piece of crap I am sitting in front of keeps insisting on its error infested ways.

Somebody help me. I think I have an additional file sharing option disabled on this machine and I have forgotten where to find it. I have file and printer sharing enabled in the network properties so that isnt it. Thanks for any help.

Answer:The simplest problem is the biggest

See if the XP firewall is turned off. In the network settings look at the 'advanced tab', if it's enabled turn it off.

Hello everyone,I need to take some Pasport & Driving license photographs for myself and several of the family. Before you say "go to a booth and spend 2" I would if they were any good but they are not in my experience.I have done this before using a very simple program but I cannot remember what it was or find the disk.Has anyone any suggestions please for an easy way.I can no doubht find some very sophisticated photo editing software that will do it but I do not want to spend the weekend learning how to use it, just want to take photos and print easily. Thanks

Answer:Pasport photos, simplest way?

If you are renewing these documents, scan the existing photos, then print them on photo paper. You could of course take pictures with a digital camera then print them, However....Check if a particular coloured background is needed, I think passport photos need a specific colour.

Hi,

My situation is this.

I have 2 HDD's in my system C: is for my OS and programs and D: is for my Flight sim stuff.

My FS has now outgrown my D: drive and I have brought a new HDD and a copy of ghost.

As I understand I can "clone" my D: one of 2 ways.

1) I could write an "image" of my D: drive to C:, and then take the old drive out, put the new one in and restore the image

or

2) Clone the drive directly.

The first option would be easier for me, simply because all my IDE channels are full, so to put the new one in to clone it I would have to remove my DVD drive or my CDRW.

So, what would be the better way to do it?, are there any pitfalls on doing it either of these ways?

Many Thanks

Dan.

Answer:What would be the best/simplest option for me?, Ghost

Either way will work. If the image will fit on C:, that seems pretty easy and painless.

I haven't had much success over the years trying to get non-tech users to backup their system - heck! it's even difficult usually to get them to backup their family photos! Those who have shown any interest have most often been put off by the complexity of programs like Acronis, Easeus Todo, Macrium Reflect etc and just don't ever do it. Many do get away with this, but some do not and end up wishing they had followed the advice.

So I was interested to come across what I perceive as a really easy to use set it and forget it backup program, AX64 Time Machine. At this stage I'm only hoping one or two of the regulars here might want to try this out for a while and then give us their views. I've had it running for a few days and have successfully restored both images and snapshots a few times but am still waiting to see how well it merges the automatic hourly backups to keep the total number of backups/snapshots manageable.

Apart from ease of use the really interesting thing about this program is the snapshot capability, much like Rollback RX, which enables you very quickly to restore to an hour ago, two hours ago etc. Acronis etc cannot do this.

Any takers? I assure everyone that I have no commercial interest whatsoever in this program.

Answer:Simplest system backup?

Hey Earthling...

Does the snapshot record all changes within the last hour, or does it focus on user defined files such as syching would do? Just thinking now how it might be a really nice idea to split a system into an image and then synch user defined files...just remove select user defined areas from the image and synch those files and folders, instead. Can't recall having seen anything like this before.

It does sound like an interesting program, and I might try this, but, with backup, I feel like I need a week or two to gather my wits. It's just so many resources being thrown around, and then, also, a new program to look into. The worst part is what to do with old backups and those from a different program. My backup drives aren't particularly large at like 300 GB or 250 GB, etc.

This sounds like a very good idea, so thanks for the info...

There's not much here that helps to give a decision...

What is this for?
Do you require a DB product/file, or is a connection string sufficient? Do you also need a GUI to design it or is commandline sufficient?
What will be hosting the DB? What operating system will it be running?
How many tables? How many rows per table? What datatypes and relationships are needed?

Off-hand, I would've thought Access to be a decent choice. But if you find yourself struggling to answer the above questions, then I'd instead suggest to research and take some classes on databases, data design, normalization, etc.

My Pentium I 200 Mhz on a Windows 98 crashed a while back, it was the motherboard. I had to take out the motherboard and replace a chip, which is not half of my problem. I thought I had carefully mapped every bit of my motherboard, BUT I didn't. I mapped out the jumpers to the system speaker ect. but I didn't see a jumper, the size of the internal system speaker jumper, that comes from the power supply to the motherboard somewhere (So I think.) My problem is that I need to know where this jumper goes, and was wondering if anyone knew of a place where I could find out (other than Intel.com, I already tried them and as I'm on a 486 processor, it locked up!)

P.S. Still looking for ANY local (My Profile) programming job. Could even be long distance as long as it can be done over the internet.

I want a very small, very high quality printer than can print on full size sheets of paper. Something that focuses on maximum ink efficiency and build quality, but something that doesn't have hundreds of useless "extra features".

Answer:Best, smallest, simplest printer

Sorry I haven't used a printer in years, if you want a copy will provide it electronically. I realize at times one may be needed to post notices, but that need hasn't arisen here. Have been contemplating buying a good scanner.though. Ink is more of an issue with me than bloat, and you could install just the printer drivers and not the full blown software. How about a dot matrix printer?

Okay, so. I have a modem (Motorola sbv5121) and I have a router (D-Link AirPlus Xtreme G VDI-624). I just want to set up a wireless network. On the modem, all of the relevant LEDs are solid. TEL1 LED is blinking, but I believe that's because there's no cable in that slot. Irrelevant.

Then I have the modem connected to the router. Its LEDs also pretend that everything's okay. But I have no Internet connection. My computer does have an IP address assigned. But when I connect to the router, I don't have a WAN IP address (it's 0.0.0.0).

Now this router comes with a handy wizard, and gives you a choice between static and dynamic IP and PPPoE.when configuring (also some other options). I'm pretty sure that I don't have a dynamic IP, so that leaves two options. Is there any way I can check that? The owner of the router is currently away and I can't ask him. What do I do now?

my girlfriends just getting into computers and im looking for a fairly simple program used for ripping DVD into mpegs, wmv, avi or any similar file types. Any ideas are greatly appreciatred.

Answer:simplest dvd encoding program

You can use DVD Decrypter or DVD Shrink to rip. DVD Shrink is also good for compressing >4.6GB of data to fit on a DVD, and you can also burn via the DVD Shrink interface if you have Nero installed. DVD Decrypter can also burn if you don't have Nero.

I want to give instructions to a non techy user to create an ISO image of a disc.

How could I do this?
I don think there's an in built command or tool in Windows?

What would be the 'smallest' open source software to create an ISO?
I know there's loads. But I wouldn't want to get the user to install things they'll never need.

Is there a standalone program that needs no installing?

I use IMGBurn - a slightly older version - you have to keep an eye on the install - else you get bloatware - and I wouldn't want to give this to a user!

Thanks.

I have a 150 gb hdd that is making some weird noise sometimes like the drive is getting ready to fail. I want to be ahead of the game by backing up the entire drive in a manner that will let me reload it after I replace the drive. What is the simplest and hopefully free way to do this. I only have 10gb on the drive total and do have an external hdd that has plenty of room for this. I do have the original E machines disk that came with it but don't want to use that if I don't have to. Too much has been updated since then. Thanks Bill

friends I'm having to write this because my old bridged network worked so well for so long that I totally forgot how I ever set it up in the first place, but I recall that it was simple and involved:
- the two were connected via wifi - the primary one having a physical connection to roadrunner modem
- the two had the same SSID, same Security method and passkey, different base IP addresses [192.168.1.1, and 192.168.1.21]
- beyond that it gets hazy... what "mode" was the secondary in? somewhere I input to the subordinate router the MAC address of the primary router... dunno where/which field accepted that
- do both need to be set to a fixed & same channel, as opposed to variable/Auto?
- what all was turned off on the secondary?
- both had full use of both their wired connections/clients and wifi
- one of these is N-300mbps, and g/b, the other is g/b. do I need to limit anything?

its not necessarily important to me that the connected devices all share with one another - I have strange clients anyway and its not needed. the windows 7 devices will be ok on the homegroup.

can someone help me out?

Hi guys, 1st post here so go easy on me

I'm looking for a really simple and user friendly desktop publisher. The book I'm making is around 120 pages and about 30% text and 70% images.

I haven't done graphic design or anything like that at school/university. I can use Word reasonably well but was looking for something with a bit more flexibility in layout. I've got Adobe Indesign and Framemaker but they look pretty daunting to me and I don't want to spend 2 weeks trying to figure out how to use them. I've got Microsoft Publisher but it just looks like a bunch of templates, none of which seem to be what I'm looking for. I've also looked at Serif Pageplus but I can't stand the popups.

I've already edited most of the pictures in Paint.net (Photoshop was too complicated for me) so I just need to arrange them on each page with Text from either Word or from a Pdf. One of the problems I had with Indesign was that when I tried to paste text the formatting got reset. So if Indesign is really the best desktop publisher around could you please recommend a guide that takes you through making a document from the ground up. I've read a bunch of tutorials but most of the stuff is unrelated to what I want to do.

Many thanks and sorry if this post is a bit disjointed, its been a long day.

I need to be able to quickly record stats and to access the totals very easily, I think I am over thinking things and I keep creating complex ways of getting the result I want, but need there to be a simpler way so that it is easy for other users.

The data I need to record is for 31 different activites, I have to tally how many people of 2 different categories each with 3 sub categories attend each activity. (e.g. boy or girl, brown eyes, green eyes or blue eyes).

I want the final result to include:

a single form to be filled in with a drop down box to select which of the 31 activities and simple option buttons for boy/girl and brown/green/blue

and:

An easy to read results table giving the totals for the 6 different categories for each activity.
I don't mind having to set up 31 tables if necessary and forming the appropriate relationships, but I do need the final result to be a very simple form to add the data and preferably a self updating results table that is easy to understand.

Any ideas are welcome, and if I'm asking a question already answered in the forum, I do apologise, I did look but didn't find what I need.

I found the Thinkpad t440, the simplest one with only 4GB of RAM, Intel i3, 1368x768 screen, etc for US$300 and I'm thinking about getting it. Is it a good choice? I'll mainly use it for software development with Java and Ruby, mostly on Linux but I also want to install Windows 10. I already have a new MacBook so this one won't be my main computer and I can also put 120GB of SSD and 8GB of RAM on it. What do you think? t440s is much more expensive :/

Answer:Is the t440(the simplest one) a good choice?

If the i3 and WXGA screen meet your needs, it is a nice basic machine. Also, look at the T440p if you need/want a DVD drive. The T440p is heavier but it has a socketed processor (instead of soldered) in case you ever need to upgrade.

I have a relative (a difficult one) who downloaded a rogue programme and it caused him untold problems> I used TeamViewer and tidied up his laptop and removed the offending programme. Unfortunately it has left some residue behind and I used CCleaner to tidy everything up, but it did not remove the programme residue. I accessed the registry files and found that there were some bits of the programme left behind. I am more than hesitant about using TeamViewer to remove these and wondered as to the wording in the SIMPLEST of terms for him to remove these entries himself without causing a further problem. Microsoft, what can you say? Talk about ignoring "user friendly"? Anyone out there happy with the NEW search in Windows Explorer in Win 7 and Vista?
Any simpleton could do a simple search in XP or windows 3 or ALLL of the previous versions but then, came Vista. You can spend hours trying to figure out how to do the simplest of searches. Dont thinks so? google vista and search and you will find millions of unhappy customers.

ALL I wanted to do is take the dups files out of a folder in my Windows 7 Ultimate.

Like (1) or (2), etc. In XP you entered (1) and it FOUND ALL the (1) and NOTHING else. (2 would even find just the EXACT sequence of characters (2

With Vista and Win 7, you can go to Folder options, then SEARCH tab and try ALL the damn combinations and what you will find is:

(1) and EVERY OCCURANCE of 1.
or
(2) and as a FREE gift from Microsoft, all the _2, $2 and any other "2" it can find.

Last night i spent over an hour trying to remove a simple (2), even tried "(2)" so say leave my damn (2) alone but did it? hell no.

Now I have got it to work before and I wrote down the option needed on the search tab but last night THOSE would NOT work again.

You find some telling you how to do the "wonderful" new search feature but their insturction DO NOT MATCH what my WINDOW EXPLORER LOOKS LIKE. I simple dont have those buttons or options, all i have is in the pull down TOOLS and the SEARCH tab.

I am looking for the absolute simplest video editing software. I currently have three programs installed and for the life of me I cannot figure out either of them. Nero 9 / NCH Video Pad / Windows Live Movie Maker.
I have a large 34 minute single file GoPro Hero video. I want to cut several sections of it and make a shorter video. I also would like to add titles and drop text boxes/screens between scenes.
Each of the programs I currently have allow me to cut one section but I have not been able to figure out out to cut out five or six sections and then put them together into one smaller video. None of the programs have manuals (their help files are less than helpful!)
To put it in the simplest terms possible....
imagine a 34 inch string, I want to cut several sections out of the string, put those sections back together as a single string and discard the rest.

I felt like this is a good question to ask since there are millions of Windows users, then Linux and macOS users. But which in your opinion (or experience) is the most easiest to setup and configure against modern Internet threats?

Threats may include but not limited to malicious applications, social engineering and other types of scams, man in the middle attacks, loggers and capture tools..

...

People say Linux can be a lot more secure and safer than Windows, but from experience I have found Linux (Ubuntu/Mint) the most challenging OS to secure and verify that I was protected against these threats. I found myself reconsidering if Linux felt safer to use everyday, over the widely exploited Windows 10 OS and Apps.

Using any 2 of the OS in the Poll, is enough for a vote. Then in the section below comment on your reasons for your choice and what OS was most challenging.

All votes are public.

Answer:Which OS platform is the simplest to secure from Internet threats?

I think linux is the easier :
firewall (like gufw)
a root password
common sense
and that's all. You have some repository that can be trusted so there is no malware inside of it.
You can access to apps source code if you want to audit it.
So yes maybe linux is the more secure OS, but it can be easy to secure it for home use (gufw, clamtk & common sense). But if you need advanced things it's a bit more difficult i agree

Hi there

This method will give IMO the best way of updating your system to W10 via an "Almost" clean install.

1) Re-install CLEAN your old legacy OS -- at boot delete all the Windows partitions so there's NOTHING on the HDD (or Windows "C" partition.

2) Ignore / skip the prompt for Windows 10 is available.

3) let the install finish together with any updates the system finds during the install. DO NOT INSTALL ANYTHING ELSE at this stage.

4) VERY IMPORTANT -- ACTIVATE WINDOWS via entering your product key (of the OLD OS). You might need to use control panel and enter Change product key if you are using say your old MSDN / TechNet keys.

5) now go into Windows update via control panel and you'll be offered the Windows 10 upgrade

download it.

Upgrade

you are now done and activated -- it's as good as a CLEAN install -- plus you'll have the odd driver working that W10 might not find.

If you want REALLY to do a clean install later then there are many ways via ISO etc to do it -- but your OLD OS must be activated first before any W10 upgrade if you want to have an activated product.

Cheers
jimbo.

Answer:Simplest way of installing W10 (Almost clean install) with activation

Can't one just install W10 on a previously formatted HD or format the HD from the DVD/USB flash drive media and will be asked for a key during the install?

I just downloaded the W10 ISO using Media Creation tool. At the finish, it stated, make sure that you the product key when your ready to install.

Buying a new desktop computer. So I literally simply want to copy my entire hard drive to an external hard drive. All the files on my HD are about 30 GB transferring to a new external with 1 TB of space. Nothing on it yet. What's the quickest, simplest way to do this? This way I know I have every single file from my computer stored without missing anything.

This way on new desktop I have all my settings/bookmarks, etc. for browsers, all files saved.....

Doesn't need to be bootable from the external, just trying to make a copy so i know i have everything. What would you guys use for this? Thanks.

Answer:Simplest way to backup entire harddrive to an external

Just copy and paste them. Use guides not only available here but on other sites as well to export your bookmarks so you can just import them. For the rest of your personal files just move them to the drive. Sicne making a direct image wont do you any good. This is going to be your best bet. Use something like SyncToy.

I use Unix and Cygwin and several scripting languages, so complex copying and scripting are easy for me, but I need to figure out a simple process for doing something in Windows without using scripting. This will be for me, but also for many other people who don't use Unix and Cygwin or scripting languages.

I have two MS Word files. I need an easy way to copy the entire contents of one of those files into the other, keeping the name of the destination file.

I don't see a simple way to do this in File Explorer. I could obviously open up both Word docs, delete everything in one, copy everything in the other, and paste into the first. That seems overly painful for what I'm trying to do, considering we may have to do this relatively often.

I would be fine with a freeware explorer addin that made this possible, but I'm not aware of one.

Desktop PC wants to share its internal M: drive (all my music studio stuff) with Laptop. Both on Windows 8.1.
I have a wireless router, dual band, 2.4Ghz/5Ghz.

Whats the best way to do this?

Right click the drive and use Advanced Sharing?
Right click the drive and create a New Library?
Use HomeGroup?

(I tried creating a new library from the M: drive and then sharing with HomeGroup. Despite saying "Library now shared." it did have an error message saying that "File Sharing wizard can't share the root of a drive.")

NOTE: I also want to make sure that once this drive is shared, only my laptop can access it, not everyone else in the building.

Looking forward to hearing from you....

Answer:Whats the Easiest Simplest way to share root of a drive?

There is no such thing as root of a drive. Root is considered an administrator account. If you are wanting full access to a drive, you have to change security permissions to allow access for the whole drive to an administrator user, or enable the Administrator account.

The reason for the heavy security on Windows 8, is to protect users from their bad habits.

Hello and thanks in advance for any help .  I've a handful of external hard drives that I use to store (mostly) large video and audio files.  They're regularly defragmented.  Over time, with files added and subtracted, the drives have developed many gaps of free space between the defragmented files. From what I've read, I can defragment the free space (compaction, I think), but this seems to involve moving entire files twice:  once to the "end" of the drive then a second time, to eliminate the gap(s) between the files, when moving them to the "beginning".  I was wondering if anyone knows of a method (software) to simply move all of the files to the "beginning" of the drive piece by piece, so that the files only need to be moved once?  It seems to me that, since the files are just bytes and they're already defragmented, it should be possible to move them section by section to the beginning of the disc, starting with the file already closest to the beginning of the disc and working out.  Does this make sense?  I've tried searching for answers but I'm having trouble finding them, probably because I'm not using the correct terms.  Other than saving seemingly half the time, several of the discs are so full that there's not enough contiguous free space to make the initial movement to then place them gaplessly.  Thanks again for any reasonable suggestions (and please feel free to ask if you don't understand what I'm asking   ).

I recently had a pretty badly infected computer that was sorted out over at the PCPitstop Forums (see thread here: http://forums.pcpitstop.com/index.php?show...170536&st=0 ). Now that I am (presumably) clean, I have some other issues.During the repair to my system I was told to update my Java (as well as uninstall old versions). Thing is I am the only user and have full administrator access. Doing some searching, I found the trying the MSInstaller clean up utility could help, but that give the same message when I try it. Then I saw I could check msconfig to make sure it was running. MSConfig shows it as Stopped, but the box is checked next to it. Trying to check and uncheck, then apply, it says "An Access Denied error was returned while attempting to change a service. Hi. . .You mentioned a BSOD with bugcheck 0x76, but I don't see any mini kernel memory dump files in the attached zip. Did you run an app similar to CCleaner that may have deleted the dumps?Systeminfo output shows Windows 7 installed (or system 1st boot) in October 2010:Original Install Date: 10/20/2010, 12:53:02 PMIt also shows 403 Windows Updates installed.I went through the Event Viewer logs and found 13 BSODs listed. 1. Make sure they work and are compatible with the OS. You can check Windows Compatibility Center. (Win8)
2. Check to see if current drivers are available for the GPU.
3. See if updates are available for the Motherboard BIOS and chipset (INF files).
4. Make sure the memory modules are compatible with the Motherboard. (Speed, type, voltage, etc.)
5. Replace the Motherboard battery.
6. Verify that the PSU will support your hardware.

Good luck!

I have a spreadsheet I'd like to turn into a poster - I'd like it spread across (that is, tiled) two A3 sheets wide and two A# sheets tall. It's currently formatted for one A4 sheet. What I've been doing is - Save As. Convert text from 9 pt to 20 point. Setting 'Fit to 2 by 2' and then dragging the columns and rows until it fits.I tried saving as PDF and printing 'Auto-Size', but that only blows it up as big as ONE A3...Any tips/tricks to doing this?(I threw this in Windows because I didn't think it was ultimately an Excel-specific question). Thanks

Greetings! Usually my PC is 100% Clean, I'm very cooncerned about everyday's treats and how to combat them. Also I am very carelful with what I download. The last week, my aunt inserted a pen drive without my permission, and mi anti-virus alerted. Now my PC is low, is sending odd fake youtube URLs to my Msn buddies and also is opening an odd precess named "zandef75" or something like that. Please help me to destroy everything bad in this filthy PC, because I use it to work and importatnt things. thanks!

Edit: Forgot to say this: When my PC starts, a message telling me that explorer.exe must close appears, when I click accept it closes explorer and start it again only to show again the same message, what I do to work in the pc is ignoring this message.

Answer:What things I should keep in mind when buying used things?

Suppose the answer changes based on who you are buying from. A lot of these things either work or they don't...

HDD - you could use something like Crystal Disk Info and hope everything shows up green. Or run a Long DST with Seatools (will take 5+ hours on large disks)
GPU - Visually inspect that it is clean, if possible have them run some benchmarks on it and monitor the temperature to make sure its reasonable and there is not artifacting or crashing happening.
Processor - If its less than 7 years old and hasn't been heavily overclocked it has an extremely high chance of being fine.
Motherboard - This is probably fine too if it is shown to work at all, check the caps to see none are bulging or leaking.
RAM - Nothing quick you can do here, ask them if it has passed multiple passes of memtest, you could have them show you, but it will take at least overnight before you get a real answer.
DVD Drive - if it burns disks and reads its fine. If it dies on you, not much you can do, things are like $16 new anyway, don't put a lot of thought into this.
PSU - just find out what one it is and google if it is any good. This really depends on how demanding your system is.

Basically you just have to have a little faith in who you are buying from and ask them if something doesn't work right away if you can return it.

I installed W8CP on an old notebook and gave it to my 13 year old daughter..
She loves it!

One thing: we noticed www.wizard101.com works fine in the normal

Is there any way to get wizard101 working and pinnable?

EDIT: also, how do you see a history of links in metro IE?
In regular IE you click and hold the backbutton.. but

The title pretty much says it all, just today my laptop has been acting really weird and I noticed someone tried to install a keylogger on my laptop but I can't delete the setup for it or even move it to a different folder. A box pops up telling me "windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." I even tried enabling my built in administrator account to delete it from that still wouldn't budge though. My anti virus doesn't seem too bothered by it but I don't want it there! lol please help -_- I am running Windows 7 home premium, pretty much brand new dell xps 15z.

Windows 7 has been out for awhile now and there many people giving opinions about it. I thought that it might be an idea now to ask the "experts" that is the members of this forum to share their thoughts with us all. To be fair I think it would be best to have 3 things that you like and 3 things that you do not like about. Please do not just put that it is wonderful, or that it is not, because that is not the point of this, be balanced and honest, thank you.

Hijack log below

Two weeks ago my Quark 7 stopped working - it will start and come up with the splash screen, but then will not go any further - a list of processes shows it's running at 50 cpu usage and 78944 memory usage. I have tried uninstalling reinstalling and have ran Norton's Antivirus, Spybot Search and Destroy and CCleaner to no avail. I have attached my HiJack log below.

The main programs that I use daily (and yes Quark is one of them) are the following

Adobe Photoshop CS3, ACDSee 9, Outlook express, Quark 7.0, Internet Explorer, Dreamweaver 8

Thank you for taking the time - I'm pretty frustrated!

Hi,
I have a i7 3770k at 3.9 ghz, so stock with turbo boost.
I tried oc'ing to 4.5 ghz, didnt fix the problem.
Basically, in some games i get high cpu usage and at the same time low gpu usage.
My system is i7 3770k, gtx1070, 16 gb ddr3 ram, corsair hx850i psu.
In witcher 3 novigrad, which is cpu heavy, i sometimes get gpu usage at like 70% which causes stutter, at the same time cpu usage is around 85%.
When i leave town i get 95-99% gpu usage again and my cpu usage drops.
Dying light same, if cpu usage is high my gpu usage drops.
Battlefield 1 is normally fine in 95-99% gpu usage, except st quentin, but others reported this too.
What can this be? My cpu shouldnt be bottlenecking. Like i said i trid overclocking, didn't help.
nvcp is set to prefer maximum performance and i'm playing at 1440p 144hz.
Any help would be appreciated.http://speccy.piriform.com/results/JMT3Ky4vYTHwXILMO6NViGa

Hi,

I just bought my brand new laptop and have loaded Vista Ultimate 32bit onto it for about 5 days. I noticed something unusual about Vista's CPU usage while idle in the task manager as well as the Resource monitor.

I have attached two pictures to show my problem. Notice that my CPU usage is always at about 40-60% on both of my cores. However, the average CPU usage per process shows that it should actually occupy about 15% to at most 20% (by adding up all the highest average CPU for processes in the first picture). The second picture I attached shows the current CPU usage sorted by max usage, and again it does not add up to 41%!

Although at 40-60% usage, I do not notice any major performance impacts, as both cores are not loaded to the max. However, I do notice Vista chewing up more battery than needed when I have my laptop running off batteries. Because the max frequency for the processor would always need to be raised to around 60% even when idle (instead of say... 10-20%).

I have searched online for various problems relating to high CPU usage, and most of the responses are about tracing down which process is the culprit. Well, this is where I'm stumped because it all does not add up! According to the process view, everything is normal but my system resources are still get constantly chewed up by something invisible it seems.

Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated at this point!

Answer:Vista Ultimate 32: high CPU usage does not correspond with process usage

Posting two more image to show this problem from the task manager...

Notice that the system idle process is 84, and yet CPU usage is 42? I always thought that:
CPU usage + idle process = 100?

Perhaps things are done differently with dual core processors? This is my first dual core so I'm not sure. The second image shows how both my cores are being used roughly equally, at around 50%.

Ok, I am literally KILLING myself over this!

I installed Windows 7 64Bit over XP around a month ago and it was so good that I recommended it to my brother who was previously on XP too. We got him a copy of the 32bit version as he has only 2gb of memory, and he installed it on his machine. However, he constantly had high CPU and RAM usage (Even though no programs were obviously taking it all up in his task manager) and it was making his computer sluggish and slow. Everything was freezing and hanging and it was a nightmare.

I spent a day looking all over the net to find out the problem, but could not fix it at all, no matter what the hell I tried. So he reverted back to Windows XP. (A nice waste of money on Windows 7.) His Windows XP now runs smoothly and is all as it was.

Suddenly today, after my brother connected to my Windows 7 homegroup (or workgroup rather) through his Windows XP machine, my computer got the EXACT same problem as he had ages ago! I have been browsing Google all day downloading s**t, changing things in my computer, trying EVERY possible fix that people have suggested and that sound legit. Nothing works!

So now all of a sudden, my computer is sluggish, games are jumpy and jittery, video rendering times are slooooooow.

Here is a picture of my resource monitor:
You can see the physical memory usage being at 45%. I've ordered the memory usage of each service in highest to lowest.
I just CANT see where the problem is!
(I've tried leaving my homegroup to see... Read more

Answer:Windows 7 random CPU usage and high physical memory usage!!!

I can tell you what is probably causing your problems. AVG.
When you are looking at memory, do not sort by Working set, sort by Hard faults.
Hard faults is what causes things to slow down. Plus you have plenty of memory not to worry about usage.

My friend, who has a very low income was given a Dell Optiplex GX240 running Win2K Pro. 512MB RAM

To help her out, I got rid of porn, viruses, and spyware using:

Ad-Aware, AVG spyware and AV free versions, Trend Micro House Call, Spybot

I checked the task manager, and has constant 100% CPU usage, avg memory usage

The system runs, but apps open slow, so I tried some freeware reg cleaners:

CCleaner, Eusing Free Registry Cleaner, Wise Registry cleaner

After hours of searching on web, the fixes I found don't work, so I give up. Can someone help. My friend doesn't have the money to pay someone to fix this, and she was so happy to get a new computer.

Greetings,

I formatted my computer, and after installing windows 7 again, my physical memory in task manager is very high, and cpu keeps jumping up and down.

I looked at the processes tab, but noticed absolutely nothing taking abnormal memory (private working set.) Then moved on to performance tab> resource monitor, and found svchost (I think it was netsvcs in parenthesis,) hogging all the memory. After ending the process, I still have had high memory usage, and surprisingly, do not see a process anywhere in task manager with high numbers next to it, so I have no idea what's happening.

I have noticed that my windows 7 folder keeps increasing in size, currently about 26 gigs, and a helper told me that it's normal because the updates in windows 7 have a different compression method than windows 8 and after, however when I had previously installed windows 7, fully updated... my folder size was normal, so I assume it can be done?

I originally posted in the Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs section, however I did not find malware on my computer, so unless it's very new malware, I am certain windows 7 is causing this problem.

For antivirus, I am currently using a free trial of Norton.

Advice?

P.S. This is probably better for the hardware section, but can constant high physical memory, and cpu usage ruin my hardware? I am avoiding using things that take up high cpu and memory right now, and it's currently about 1.2 g... Read more

Recently my computer has been plagued by High CPU and general malware. I believe i've removed most of the malware. But I can't seem to fix the issue with the dllhost.exe and multiple explorer.exe running.

First i ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, then I ran Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit. Found lots of issues. all resolved. Ran them recently again and no malware was found. Still have the explorer.exe issue though.

Then I used combofix, but it changed nothing.

In the meanwhile i've just been ending the explorer.exe processes that take high CPU. This allows me to temporarily use my computer before they start popping up again.

Answer:dllhost.exe, multiple explorer.exe's, high CPU usage, and memory usage

I don't know what you need me to post. Hopefully this might provide some insight.

Every 10-40 minutes, the application I'm currently working in [whither it be skype, L4D2, or firefox] becomes unresponsive, and after a minute or two, the window turns white, notifying me that it's not responding. This unresponsiveness quickly spreads to other open processes, rendering them frozen as well. I can still use the mouse, and it appears rainmeter still responds [updates, showing barely any CPU usage].

Steps I've taken to try and resolve this:
Using only one main program, still does it
turning the computer off and on again
Memtest is clean
chkdisk passes
MBAM/MSE scans return nothing
defragged
no memory overflows that I can see

While troubleshooting, I noticed that during the 'fit of unresponsiveness' the disk usage light on my tower is solid, but when I looked at the disk usage in the resource monitor, no processes whatsoever were using it [screenshot related]

If any more specifications are needed, I'll be happy to elaborate.
Thanks!

Answer:Frequent unresponsiveness, 100% hardware disk usage, 0% software usage

It could be indexing. What if you turn off indexing just as an experiment?

Edit: Posted this on the wrong forum! DOH. Reported as this is for Windows 8, not 7.

Windows 10's message was typically IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, suspecting a driver issue I reformatted to 8.1 which I am on now. The message I'm getting now is PFN_LIST_CORRUPT.

Hardware/full build: Core i7-6700K 4.0GHz Quad-Core, GeForce GTX 1080 8GB GAMING X 8G, Node 804 MicroATX Mid Tower - System Build - PCPartPicker

My strongest suspect is memory, however HeavyLoad ran for 4+ hours maxing both memory and CPU before the system decided to restart. I also ran a Memtest86+ which passed multiple times. I still suspect a memory problem though as I am unable to boot the system with 4 sticks installed unless I have the XMP profile already activated. 3 sticks is fine, 2 sticks is fine, 1 stick is fine, different ports are fine. I tried different sticks in different slots and no change.

Tonight I am getting a lot of the following errors in the event log. This is while the computer was remaining idle on the login screen. I'm running WoW now and there are none to be seen.

Hi,

Just yesterday I realized that my computer was acting super slowly and I even received a blue screen of death out of nowhere. Upon checking my processes list,I found many suspicious processes that continued to multiply when I tried to end them. These included: PresentationHost.exe, msdtc.exe, dllhost.exe, prevhost.exe, cmd.exe, msiexec.exe, conhost.exe, and even a notepad.exe that seems to be invisible. A malware is most likely behind this, and is causing my computer to perform very slowly and be almost unusable, I have managed to run FRST, but Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is not even opening for me. In addition, this multiplying issue seems to only occur when I am connected to the internet. I would highly appreciate some help!

Hi all, hope you can help.

Every so often, when listening to online radio streams/playing games etc my computer just goes crazy. I get a lot of hard drive 'chatter' and lots of fan noise and everything slows to a crawl. My music will start jumping and skipping and there is a long delay between me clicking the mouse and the action happening. It happens when no other programs (for example, my AV/AS) are due to scan. When I look at my Task Manager the two biggest eaters of memory usage are fm.exe (game, it normally eats a load but makes no substantial difference to the comp speed) and ekrn.exe (something to do with my AV, not quite sure what it actually does though)

I am running Windows MCE SP3 and am using NOD32 anti-virus and Sunbelt CounterSpy anti-spyware. The definitions on both are updated daily and both scan daily. I have also defragged the comp and do so weekly. The other programs I use are CCleaner and Glary Utilities, both fairly regularly to clean up my comp when I was working as an internet researcher, but less often now.

I do not get any error messages/BSOD's or actual freezes. Everything just slows right down. Could I have picked up a form of malware/virus that my AV/AS isn't picking up? Could one of my previous spring cleans have been too aggressive? Or is it simply too much load for my comp (2 year old Dell)? It is 3MHz, 1G RAM, kinda your bog standard media comp from 2007.

Your thoughts and advice are greatly appreciated as it's starting ... Read more

When you experience or encounter strange behavior, always check for new, unknown or suspicious processes in Task Manager. Most of the processes in Task Manager will be legitimate as shown in these links.List of common system processes found in XP's Task ManagerCommon system processes found in XP's Task ManagerTop System ProcessesAnytime you come across a suspicious file or one that you do not recognize, search the name using Google or the following databases:BC's Startup Programs DatabaseSystemLookup StartupList IndexFile Research CenterProcessLibrary.comDetermining whether a file is malware or a legitimate process sometimes depends on the location (path) it is running from. One of the ways that malware tries to hide is to give itself the same name as a critical system file. However, it then places itself in a different location on your computer. Another techinique is for the process to alter the registry and add itself as a Startup program so that it can run automatically each time the computer is booted. Hi guys, hope you can help me please. I'm not too computer savvy so sorry if I'm missing something important or I say something dumb. I'm really frustrated and I'm trying my best to learn and solve this problem.
So I bought this Vaio with Core i5-3210M, 4Gb Ram, Windows 8 64 bit. I had really high hopes for it, coming from an i3. For the first few weeks it worked fine, but then it started to freeze while watching movies. Then it started happening all the time, and the cooling fan became consistently noisy for working at full capacity.
I was used to opening task manager on older systems when this happened to see if there was a non-responding program and force it closed, so I noticed Task Manager offers some more features in Win 8. Here, I see that CPU usage is high, staying always around 70% and from time to time reaching 100. At this moment, the process taking the biggest slice is called VCS System Tray with 58%.
What's perhaps more concerning, is that Disk usage is almost constantly on 100%. And by this I mean it reaches 100 and stays there for long periods of time, perhaps up to 20 minutes, then it falls down a few seconds and up again to 100. During this time the computer is excruciatingly painful to use. To even open a program takes forever. When this happens, it seems that Chrome is at the top of the list of processes with most disk usage, with about 1-2Mbps, but this sometimes changes and the list can be led by System, Utorrent, Octoshape, VCS System Tray, Communication... Hi, welcome to the forums,
Go to Device manager(right click bottom left corner), uninstall the "VAIO care" driver, get the new driver from Sony support:Sony eSupport - Computers - Support
Install and see whether it helps, check your system for virus infections with Malwarebytes as well.

HELP!My computer has become ridiculously slow, taking minutes to do nothing. The computer is quite old (4-5 years), but has had XP and MS Office installed fom Day 1. I have not added any other software which might explain the slowness. When the computer is slow, if I Ctrl:Alt:Delete, the CPU usage is sometimes very high (80%) or above, but not always, however, the Page file usage history is always at least 80/90% of capacity (value reads as nearly 400Mb).What is the page file usage history? Is this likely to be why my computer is slow and can any settings be changed, or do I have to bin the computer and buy one which works? Thanks

I have the following config-> Windows XP Professional SP2 which I have been using for the last 3 years.-> Updated Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 running for the last 1 year.-> No new software were installed in the last month that I can recall of.Suddenly I get this problem:1. I ran an application one day (it was winrar), and nothing starts.2. Task manager shows CPU usage as 50 (I have dual core), while memory usage remains at 84k3. After a few days vlcplayer.exe started giving the same problem-> So, I reinstalled windows (formatted my C drive and installed a fresh copy). -> Everything worked fine. I was using Irfanview.exe with no problems, but then one day again, IrfanView.exe did not start. Same problem : CPU usage was 50% while memory remained really low.-> I uninstalled it from C:/program files and installed a new copy in C:/program files --- this did not solve the problem-> I uninstalled it again from C:/program files and installed to D:/ Now it works fine...-> But now again I got the same problem with media player.exeI have tried a virus scan with Kaspersky (updated) and a scan with spybot. They both came out to be clean.Any ideas?I cant reinstall Windows as that did not solve the problem.

Answer:CPU usage increases to max (while memory usage doesnt) when I run a application

I dont know if this helps: I read somewhere about creating a drive image for easy backup. So I tried DriveImageXML, but it gave an error regarding CRC check which related to bad sectors i suppose. I ran a scan disk before installing a fresh copy of Windows. Obviously, this hasnt helped either.

For over about a month now my DSL internet has been dropping randomly. It disconnects completely for a few seconds to fifteen minutes, then picks back up. This happens usually every twenty or so minutes, it's very random, so this is just a mode. The speed itself is not affected (when it's on, it's fine). I've been able to determine that the reason is somewhere on my desktop.

It's a HP Envy with intel i7 3.40 GHz. About a year and three months old, and using windows 8. I typically use google chrome for browsing, only occasionally firefox. I am connected to my internet wirelessly, which is broadcasted from the router a floor beneath me. The router is plugged into a phone jack, shared with the house phone (no problems with the phone what-so-ever). Tbaytel is my provider, and I use Kaspersky antivirus. Network details; Speed-72.0 mbps. Sent-13,936,*** and counting. Received- 244,015,*** and counting. Security type is WPA2-Personal, Encryption type is AES and we have a security key set up (That we recently changed to see if it would help, and of course it didn't).

This is what's scary;

Processes under the task manager brought up nothing, but looking at the Wi-fi under the Performance tab showed that something is definitely going on. The amount of Wi-fi usage spikes HUGE amounts! But at the time I took this screenshot, I was only running an antivirus full scan (which turned up nothing), google chrome on this site, and had both the task ... Read more

Answer:Internet cutting out from MASSIVE usage, but usage not accounted for.

About your new router...
How long have you been using it or since when did you got it?
How long has it been opened? Have you tried powercycling it? (Turning it off and then on)

Also, Have you tried testing it while your laptop is directly plugged in on your router with an ethernet cable? (Try speedtest.net)

Does this happen to other of your computers or device?
Does Tbaytel do line testing when you called them?
