Update history shows it requires a restart (KB4041676)

Question: Update history shows it requires a restart (KB4041676)

Windows update history still keeps showing it requires a restart to finish installing this update (KB4041676).
After numerous times restarting it never goes away, did a System File Checker and DISM no problems.

The Windows Version is what it should be after this update

I read many have had BSOD with this Oct. 17th update, no problems here just what was stated.
If anyone knows a solution otherwise all is good with my PC.

Preferred Solution: Update history shows it requires a restart (KB4041676)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

for the past week I have been getting an AVG pop-up message, saying update requires restart, and the AVG tray icon is greyed out with a red exclamation in it. I select restart and the pc/laptop,(got this problem on both machines), reboots. When it starts up again, it takes about a minute until the message pops up again! I have tried a repair installation, using the latest build-138 version, and also tried a complete un-install, re-install, but this hasn't worked. I have also tried to change the update manager settings to 'immediately update and confirm if restart is required', which is what most people are saying will fix the problem, but ths hasn't worked either. I have run a virus-scan, and found nothing. I have swept the internet for answers, and everyone seems to have different fixes for the problem, and these fixes seem to be hit & miss, as they don't always work. Could someone please help, as I am now considering using a different anti-virus, cos it is really pi$$ing me off.

I am having trouble installing any windows update that requires a restart. Here is a view of my Windows update historyHere is the error msgHere are my basic system specs.Basically, every time windows tries to auto update, it downloads, installs, then says a system restart is required. It restarts, acts like it is installing and gets to Step 3 of 3, goes from like 0% to 100% complete in a matter of a few seconds, then states that the install was unsuccessful and that is must revert back to its previous configuration.I have tried searching and doing some of the things that Windows suggests, but to no avail. I would like to start over from step zero, just so I don't miss anything.I appreciate any help with this. I do travel and am out of contact from time to time, so I will try to post when I will travel and we I return so that the post does not go dead when I appear not to respond. Thanks ahead of time.

Hello

I'm not an expert about computer hardware but I have recently performed a clean installation of windows 7 to my laptop then I had install about 100 updates + drivers to use the software which required me to restart about 10 times, I read online that this can stress the hard drive or some hardware component which has got me concerned about it.

My question: Is it okay if I do about 10 restarts due to windows/drivers asking me to perform the restart action?

Answer:Is it safe to restart a few times when windows update requires you to?

There are always good reasons for Windows Updates to request a restart - and it allows WU to recheck and update the list of required updates.

A clean install of Windows 7 (RTM) currently requires about 99 updates - and then there's SP1 to install, and a number of other items, to get it fully up-to-date.

Short answer - restart as and when requested, or it can actually cause problems.

Windows 10 installed the KB4041676 cumulative update to 1703 build 15063.674 on my Toshiba notebook last night. Now the 3 other PCs on my home network can't see the Toshiba anymore:

* Desktop running Windows 7 64 bit
* Desktop running Windows 10 32 bit
* Notebook running Windows 7 32 bit
* Notebook running Windows 10 64 bit

Options in Advanced sharing settings haven't changed:

[x] Turn on network discovery
. . [x} Turn on automatic setup of network connected devices
[x} Turn on file and printer sharing.

Under 'Settings > Update & security >Troubleshoot' I ran the 'Incoming Connections Troubleshooter > What are you trying to do > Share files and folders'. That reported, "Problems found - Windows requires more information to diagnose the problem. - Not fixed." I have yet to get any troubleshooters in Windows to fix these sorts of issues.

I don't use the Homegroup for sharing, preferring to share individual folders on various systems. So I have turned on password protected sharing on each system and have created user accounts on all systems for the same 4 users on all 4 systems.

Any suggestions on what may have caused this, and how to fix it?

Thanks for any thoughts on all this.

Edit: Also ran these troubleshooters with no success:
* HomeGroup
* Internet Connections
* Network Adapter

Have also tried disabling antivirus

Ok, so recently, i installed an optional update through Windows update on to my Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit system. When i logged on, i noticed that my netgear wireless internet card was no longer working at all. I tried to uninstall the update since it seemed to be working before it was added. however even though it shows up in the "update history" tab, it does not show up in the "installed updates" tab.

the exact update name:
-Broadcom driver update for Broadcom 802.11n Network Adapter

anyone know how i can get rid of it/downgrade it to the previous working version?

Answer:Update shows in history, but not in installed updates

Yeah, that is because it is a driver. Go to Device Manager > under Network Adaptors you will find your Broadcom > double click on it and go to the Driver tab. There you can roll- back.

Hi guys,

I sometimes program, and sometimes play an occasional game

Like for instance, windows 10 yesterday got updated on my main desktop computer and this update KB4041676 got installed.

Today I get random crashes in Android studio as well as in Witcher3.

Got me frustrated. I uninstalled it.

Any official news about that?

Hi all,

Norton anti-virus 2012 would not install because Vista SP1 was missing. I downloaded SP1 from MS but it crashed my PC during the install. Irrevocably. Wouldn't load.

I had no choice but to do a factory reset from the system recovery partition (It's an HP Pavillion a6250 which comes with a recovery Drive D: but no Vista Installation Disc)

This worked fine, effectively providing a factory-fresh machine. I used Windows Update to download 89 outstanding updates - all fine.

I checked the update history and it showed that both SP1 and SP2 had been installed successfully but when looking at the My Computer/Properties, neither appears as being installed.

If anyone has faced a similar problem, any advice on where to go from here would be much appreciated . . .

Answer:SP1 shows as installed on Update History but not on My Computer/properties

Hi & welocome,

Please post a picture of you update history & My computer properties screens. We can go from there! OK?

Hello All.
I upgraded to Windows 10 Pro over a month ago and have noticed something with Windows updates recently. I see in the system event log that the Windows Update Agent has installed several updates, however, if I go to Windows Update History under the Update and Security section, click on Advanced Options, and click on Update History, I do not see that any updates were installed during the date or time that is specified in the event log. Not sure what is happening here and was wondering if someone knew what Microsoft is doing with updates in this case.
Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Hi,

I always delete history in by clicking wrench menu >> settings >> clear history >> from beginning and tick all options..

I just noticed it has still stored all histories of mine for many days that I can see when I click wrench menu >> "history"

I tried deleting again but still it was there.

I managed to delete it finally manually by deleting the userdata folder in the path C:/documents and settings/users/username/local settings/application data/google/chrome/user data

But I wonder if this is something virus in my computer or a bug in browser itself.

Answer:[SOLVED] chrome do not clear history but it shows history cleared

Have you considered using ccleaner to do that stuff? I wouldn't touch google chrome if you paid me. Which is funny because my employers use it but I personally would not at home as think it is very flaky, very unsecure and buggy.

So it would not suprise me that there is some sort of bug which is not deleting the history but I cant really help you as I dont use it. I am sure others can though.

For the past three days my AVG after it's daily update required me to restart the PC which I did. This morning I wasn't even asked, something flashed up on the screen while I was working on something else and the PC just shut down on me. Thankfully it wasn't important so no great loss.Has anyone else had this experience? Or have I got a gremlin?

Answer:AVG now always requires restart?

Are you referring to AVG Free? If so There may be a problem as I use this and have nothing similar happening. In the past I have had an update which corrupted the program necessitating it to be uninstalled/reinstalled before it worked correctly.

Computer hibernates satisifactorily but one half the time it must be restarted (with a password) to function.

Answer:Computer requires restart after sleeping

Keoweekid, welcome to the forum. It sounds like a glitch has occurred in the system.  I suggest going into the Control Panel / Power Options and changing all settings to Never.  Once this is done, reboot the computer.  Then, go back into the Control Panel and change the settings to what you want them to be.  This may solve your problem.  If this doesn't solve your problem, you may have to do a System Recovery. Also, if you are the only user of the computer, you can set it to boot with Auto logon.  This way you won't have to use a PW everytime you logon.  I have mine setup this way. Please click the Thumbs up + button if I have helped you and click Accept as Solution if your problem is solved.

So, this issue has popped up recently where I can't seem to re-enable aero without restarting the whole system. It gets turned off for a number of reasons, from programs crashing (itunes) to the crappy Cyberlink Blu-Ray software turning it off, but where it used to come back on its own, or at least let me get at it from the personalization menu, it will only let me use windows basic.

Choosing an Aero theme in personalization does nothing but change the Window Color icon from the windows 7 basic to the custom color icon . Basic persists, and the new icon, though Aerotastic in appearance still to the windows basic color options.
So far I've tried:

updating the video card driver
updating windows
restarting themes from services.msc
restarting Desktop Window and Session Manager
Forcing it
logging off and back on
re-calculating the user experience index

But the only thing that will bring aero back is a complete restart. So, I'd be grateful to know if any of you have had a similar problem or any idea how to fix it

Thankies

I opened up the System Properties and clicked on the Network ID wizard to see what options were available for change. I didn't actually make any changes and attempted to close the wizard but as soon as I did a dialog pops up saying I must restart the computer. Problem is, this computer is running some critical programs and must continue to do so. The wizard mentioned nothing about requiring a restart at all (at least not to my memory).

Is there any way I can get rid of this dialog without the computer restarting?

I am also seriously afraid that Windows may try to restart itself when the computer is idle regardless of what else is running in the background. I do not want to walk away from this computer and come back to find that Windows auto-restarted because Microsoft in all its infinite wisdom decided it would be a good idea to restart a functional computer without the user's explicit permission.

Thanks in advance!

Answer:No changes made but Windows requires restart

It looks like you must have clicked on something in the wizzard, to make it think that you have changed something or you might have actually changed something, but there is no reason why you should restart your pc now or in the next few days if you do not want to.

The changes will only take effect at your next restart (if any). Windows will not restart it if you did not tell it to.

So just when it ask you if you want to restart the Pc now just say NO

Hope that helps :)

A new install of Windows 7 professional on a new computer. System seems to be working fine. We have two users setup on a workgroup. Every time we switch users even if the other users logs off, the systems ask for a restart. If you tell it later, it pops up after a few minutes until you restart.

Any way to get windows to stop doing this?

I appreciate any help.

Hi,

I was hoping somebody would help me as this problem has been driving me a bit crazy.

I had Windows Vista installed, and have done a clean install of Windows 8.1, but exactly the same problem occurs.

Every few days, my internet will cut. There are no error messages, my network icon says I have internet access. When I use a browser, there are no error messages but links when clicked just fail to respond. When I type in a search in the search bar and press enter, nothing happens.

I generally hibernate the laptop, as I often have open word documents and internet tabs that I like to keep in front of me, rather than starting from scratch each day. If I reboot the computer, the internet returns. I have tried to run "ipconfig /flushdns" "netsh winsock reset catalog", but they require a reboot, and a reboot without doing these things always works anyway.

Any help with keeping my internet on would be greatly appreciated!

When I run trouble shooting, the following error message appears:

I just got an HP LJ2550L color laser printer. It has already solved a number of problems here where I volunteer, and we love it.

However, there is one slight problem. Many times, when I send it a document to print, especially right after it has printed another document, it does not visibly respond (green data light stays steadily lit, does not flash as it does when receiving data), and in control panel/printers, the document is shown with the status "printing - error". I have found by trial and error that if I turn the printer off and on again, after its warmup cycle completes the job will start printing, with no loss of data.

Sending multiple print jobs to my other printer (HP DeskJet 932C) causes no problems of any sort. It just keeps on printing, demanding paper when it runs dry, then resuming when I insert paper and hit the form feed button. I'd prefer for the LJ to print without interruption, or at least resume when I hit a button or select Restart in Printers (it doesn't).

FYI, I am running XP Pro, printing from Windows (Office 2003), the DeskJet is on USB, the LaserJet on parallel port. I update XP regularly, and have downloaded and installed HP's latest version of the printer driver (dated June 2004).

Any suggestions?

Al

This has been going on for a few months now on my new HP dv5-1000us notebook running Vista Home Premium 64-bit. The computer starts up with wireless networking and wireless connection working fine. At some seemingly random time (usually a few hours) my connection status will go from "local and internet" to "limited connectivity" with the little yellow warning icon. I try disconnecting and reconnecting, it can't connect. I turn off and on the adapter using the on-keyboard button, it says it is going "off" then "on" but connection is not restored. "Repair" attempts fail immediately, with no explanation given, it just says it can't connect. I can't ping any IP address or websites, I get "host unreachable" messages. The only solution is to restart, at which point everything is fine. Note that in this time when the wireless is not functioning, I can plug in an ethernet cable and be connected to the internet just fine.

I did IPCONFIG/ALL in the connected state, and the 'after' disconnected state.

I'm no expert on this, but it sounds to me as though the problem may lie with your firewall.

Some firewalls, if they sense a threat (real or imagined) will close all ports and thus stop traffic to and from your machine. Rebooting will return things to their base settings.

I'm sure the experts will be along soon and tell me I'm talking rubbish. But, until they do, just check.

Oops. Sorry, didn't notice the ethernet cable bit

I have had this problem for a while now and it requires me to hold down the power button and restart my computer. There seems to be no time limit, my computer is not overheating or being overworked. It has happened while i have been just browsing the internet or when I am playing games. I am stumped on what to do. I want to make sure it is not something software side before I go doing anything with replacing hardware.

When it freezes all sound just stops and I can not move my mouse. What ever my screen was showing a second before the freeze is what it stays showing. It seems to happen alot when i hit fullscreen or unfullscreen a youtube video or Twitch.tv stream. I have tried waiting it out but it stays that way for hours.

I will admit to having torrented before.

I recently put together a new build and am having an issue where after my computer has been on for more than a day or so, it starts exhibiting persistence input lag/freezing. Basically every 10-15 seconds it locks up for 3-4 seconds. If I start a 3D game in this state its even worse, as it'll render perfectly for a few seconds than lock up for 5-10 seconds, then run fine again for a few seconds, etc. The problem started when I upgraded my video card.

The only solution I have is to restart the computer daily, as using the computer immediately after a restart does not show any problems. I have all hibernate and sleep options disabled for now.

My initial thought was the video card, as running with the motherboard's on-board video does not produce this issue. I returned the card to the seller and they sent me a brand new one, but the issue is exactly the same.

Could this be in inherent problem with the video card or NVidia driver? Any suggestions?

Very frustrating problem I'm having. I have a multi-monitor setup (not sure if this is the cause of this issue as I have multi monitors on my other machines).

Sometimes an application will freeze (hey, it happens) and I'll do a ctrl-alt-del, then hit task manager.

Then everything goes black.

I can see my mouse and can move it around, but that's it. I cant see anything else, and they keyboard seems to have no effect. In the end, I have to power down my machine from the power button.

I've tested this a few times...it's not just task manager. It's ANYTHING (change password, switch user, etc). Just goes all black. Not pitch black, but the screens go completely dark but I can see and move my (white) mouse icon.

This sucks! Help!

I have had the laptop since December, ever since my first use it has always had problems wking from sleep, it basically freaks out when I wake it up and I have to restart. That problem seems to have gone away but becasue of that issue I cannot be sure if this audio problem has always been there. So everyday I have to restart my laptop to get the sudio to come back on. I used to think it was after muting it would not un-mute but today I realised it doesn't have to have been muted to fail. I cannot be sure if it happens only after sleep or just happens but I will keep an eye on this now. Anybody else had this problem?  I am running the troubleshooter but it's been going for about an hour and I am starting to think it's not doing anything ! This has not been a great experience. I do have extended warranty but I don't want to spend my like on the phone to tech support at the shop I purchased it from becasue it's probably chargeable ! Thanks.  J.Evans

Hello, I have been getting random freezes ever since I installed windows 7 starter... I had no problems before when this PC was running windows 7 trial version. When it happens my PC becomes unresponsive and whatever audio is played is looped(at a certain frequency) which is very annoying.. The only thing that functions is the CD/DVD drive. I have been trying to search for solutions but whatever solution I try from people with the same problem as me doesnt work. Please help me I don't know much about computers..

Edit: Also I can't seem to recreate this freezing thing. but most of the time it happens when I'm playing games... Although it sometimes happens even when I'm just browsing.

PS: Sorry for my english, im not american btw haha

Answer:My computer randomly freezes requires manual restart...

AFAIK...Windows 7 Starter is an OEM version already installed in a system.

Please explain what you did when you "installed" it, where you obtained the Win Starter version from, etc.

Computer/hardware info: running XP on a Sony Vaio; my internet connection is direct to modem. Internet is cable through Comcast, and I also have cable television.

I've read numerous other threads regarding the internet dropping, here and elsewhere, but none of them seem quite applicable to my situation, especially since most of them mention routers.

Late March/early April I was having some trouble with my signal dropping. When this happened I'd have to power cycle the modem and restart my computer. I happened to go away on vacation around that time, and when I returned, function seemed to be restored, so I figured Comcast must have been doing some work that week or something.

Except this past weekend I started having issues again, and this time the signal was dropping about every ten minutes. It has improved over the week since so it only drops off every few hours, but it's still an absolute pain.

Comcast insists (unsurprisingly) that the problem must be on my end. Latest tech guy says it's my computer, which is four years old and quite literally falling apart, but mostly functional. I'm currently trying to determine whether it is, in fact, the computer, or if it's them, and if it is my computer what I can do about it, if anything.

I have tested three different modems, two different cords. I did try my older laptop yesterday after the Comcast guy told me it was my computer, and it seemed to be working fine, but this laptop is so bad that I ... Read more

I'm working out of a computer repair shop and we've got an L450 that randomly stops receiving any input from the touchpad.  It seems to particularly happen when you try to do anything "complicated" such as move the mouse as press in the trackpad at the same time, or double tap the trackpad to move something. The only way to have it start working again is shutting down and restarting the notebook completely. We've replaced both the trackpad and the motherboard, and it still happens. So it's definitely a software-side issue. It happens on both Windows 8.1 and Windows 10, on both the drivers available from the product page and the newer drivers found through having Windows search for driver updates available online. After some research, I'm seeing that Lenovo notebooks seem to be a fairly common problem across many models spanning the last 5 years or so. Anyone got any ideas? The notebook is sadly 1 month out of warranty, so sending it in is no longer an option.

Hi, I'm on a laptop and have a wireless internet connection. Very often, it will disconnect, then when i try to search for networks it says none available. I have to restart the computer in order to connect again. It seems to happen randomly, sometimes it will work fine for days while others times i'll have to restart it twice within two hours. Any help would be very much appreciated.

For a couple of weeks this has become an increasingly severe problem. When I start up the computer (six year old PIII 800 MHz on a Gigabyte 686BX) the monitor won't activate. Judging by hard drive activity it also seems that Win 2000 does not load all the way, activity seems to stop after some 20 secs. To solve this I have to press restart. At first once was enough, now four or five restarts are necessary to wake up the monitor.

Worn out computer? Worn out graphics card? Or what?

Thanks

Answer:Startup problem - monitor wake up requires restart

What operating system are you using? Can you start up easier in safe mode? Google on "safe mode" for instructions. Does a scandisk show any bad sectors? Have you defragged the hard drive recently? Do you have the CD or disks to allow a re-install of your OS? Could be some loose connections inside the case too.

So, my laptop's sound just randomly stops at points. Restarting my computer fixes the issue, but it happens again after some time. Also, whenever this happens, any video I'm watching, specifically on Youtube, seems to go into this permanent buffering mode. Hi @LegendSoma, Welcome to the HP Forums! You have come to the right place to ask questions, find solutions and get help from others in the community!  I have read that your HP Pavilion 15 Sleekbook is having issues with the Sound. I have checked and it seems that it could be a Flash Player issue. Here is something that might help. Here is a link to help resolve the speakers and sound not working correctly. The link to using the Windows troubleshooting tool is the best for this situation. If this does not help I would uninstall the Realtek HD Audio and any other that are listed in the Device Manager, click the arrow next to Sound video and games controller to expand that category.Right-click on he IDT High-Definition (HD) Audio and select Update Driver Software.Choose the option to Search Automatically for Updated Driver Software. The Notebook should find and automatically install the updated driver. After the installation is complete, restart your Notebook. Please let me know if this information helps you resolve the issue by marking this post as Accept as Solution, this will help others easily find the information they may be looking for.  Also, clicking the Thumbs up below is a great way to say thanks!    Thanks.

Check your temp readings in Bios. Also clean your tower out with a can of compressed air. Also Check your Hard drive to see if it is failing.

Downloading UBCD which is in my signature.Burn the ISO Image to a blank CD using Imgburn (How to burn a ISO Image using Imgburn) burn at lowest speed. With the newly burned cd boot with the cd go to HDD>Diagnostics>The make and model of your hard drive, Seagate, Maxtor, Drive Fitness which is Hitachi, Or Western Digital. Perform a short and long test. Could also be called "Standard" and "Extended" test or also "Comprehensive" test.

If you can not find the right test for your hard drive your OEM computer may have it's own hard drive diagnostics testing tool. Refer to your OEM computer documentation to find out how to access these test. Also try going to the manufacture of your machine to find documentation about it. Also consider going to the manufacture of your hard drive to look to see if they have hard drive diagnostics test. The ideal test or method would include an ISO that could be burned via an image to a cd which would be made bootable.

After about several hours a day my internet browser (whatever browser I may be using at the moment Firefox/Internet Explorer/Chrome) just stops navigating. I could be searching any site when it happens. I rarely ever use P2P on this machine, and its been working completely fine for about two months or so.My laptop is always on the move from one Access Point to the next, so its not a single router problem. I could be connected to one router for about 3 hours and all will work just fine, but then I can connect to another Access Point, and after about 4 hours of the connection continuously working just fine, the browser will just halt all activities and seize to navigate until I restart the PC/Netbook. Many Persons seem to have few solutions for this issue, and if its a malware, its still alive in the year 2009. I have recently ran Malwarebytes several times, CCleaner, Spybot Search and Destroy, and Installed AVG Internet Security (with hopes to try and stop all out of the ordinary request from accessing the internet), all the while desperately trying to remove this nagging matter however I had no avail. I installed Zone Alarm and discovered that the notorious "SkypeNames.exe" (newly discovered) ~virus was the cause of the issue posted above. Upon being rudely disconnected from the world wide web once more "and for the last time", I immediately referenced the Zone Alarm grid to see what was the matter. Sure enough right under Firefox.exe was SkypeNames.exe accessing the network. After removal all reverted back to normal.

Hello Everyone

Recently my HDD was replaced in my pc due to it was faulty (couldn't boot).
I got a new one and redownloaded my games, but now i have a decrease in FPS in most games and the newer ones (Rome 2, AC4 etc.) have large FPS drops and crashes to a black screen with flickering sound after a few minutes. This forces me to restart my pc manually. I initailly thought it was due to overheating, and i cleaned my computer, which cured some of the FPS drops, but the games still crash after a few minutes.
Does anybody know why this happens?
I have attached a zip folder containing the results from: DxDiag and MSINFO32.

Any help would be appritiatied, thanks!

Hi all, I need help with a very serious issue. My laptop, for the past couple months, has been, as stated above, experiencing lag, becoming audioloop-unresponsive, and requiring a hard switch restart every time. Sometimes the computer will do this even in the startup, and the operating system will fail to load. Here is a list of the relevant information, and what I've already tried to correct the issue.

Laptop: ASUS VivoBook X540SA-BPD0602V with: 500GB SATA HDD, 4GB installed RAM, Intel Pentium processor, 128MB VRAM, integrated GPU.
OS: Windows 10 Home Insider Preview Build 16251.1000

Attempts to fix:

SFC scan FAILED
Windows Memory Diagnostic FAILED
BIOS configuration modification FAILED
PC Reset (keep files) FAILED
PC Reset (remove files, no TPM reset) FAILED
PC Reset (remove files and reset TPM) FAILED
Disk defragmentation FAILED

Remove paging file restrictions FAILED
File System Repair FAILED
System Restore FAILED
System Disc Image Repair FAILED
New Installation FAILED
Install previous build FAILED
Driver updates FAILED
Temp files cleared FAILED

At this point, I have no idea what to do. If there was any way to research how to fix it, it's so unusable, I can't even access the internet. In fact, I'm posting this from my mobile phone because I have no other choice. And no, I can't flash the BIOS. These problems started hitting en masse after I received BSOD CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED on Build 16215.

This seems to be a variation on the X-60 problem - twice now my X61 running Vista Business has simply stopped operating (not shut down), while in the midst of normal operations. The screen goes dim (as if it were going into power saver mode while on batteries), then black, with no lights lit - including power. The workaround is to unplug, pull the battery, then re-seat the battery and plug back in. When the workaround is followed, the system powers up normally, advises that there has been an incomplete shutdown, and offers safe mode as a startup option - but starts normally. Any suggestions?

I have to shut my HP w2558hc monitor down and restart it to get it to awake from sleep mode. Started about two weeks ago. The operating system is windows 7 pro with a gigabyte GA H97-D3H motherboard. The video is onboard and fed by HDMI cable. Processor is Intel i5 4430. Everything else has been great for a year or so except for this little monitor problem.

Thanks for your help

Answer:Monitor requires stop and restart to awake from sleep mode

Problem solved by using scan now with repair (sfc /scannow), but had to do it in safe mode to get a repair. Scan indicated there were a few corrupt files and couldn't fix them all. but did solve the monitor restart problem. This is my first SSD { fairly new), and wonder if the SSD might be more prone to corrupt files and/or not being able to correct them all.

Thanks

Hi All, I just recently purchased a U410 and I, like many others, am experiencing issues with the wireless connectivity. When I first got the laptop, I rarely had any problem with it. However, it has been slowly deteriorating and the ability to connect to different networks is worsening. More and more I am unable to connect or have frequent drop-outs. The real issue, though, is that to be able to connect to a network again I need to perform a full reboot. Disabling the network adapter is not enough, nor is running the troubleshoot tools in Windows 8. It is incredibly frustrating to have to restart completely to get online again and lose my place in browsers/documents/etc. Has anyone else been experiencing similar issues? I have tried to contact Lenovo about a refund for my U410, but apparently the window for eligibilty has passed by two weeks and they refuse to make an exception. Needless to say, after years and years of Lenovo computers this will likely be my last as the performance is so much less than I expect from them... Thanks,B

The issue seems to be getting worse. Before yesterday, I had at least been able to game on the computer. Now, I am hardly even able to do that. Any game I play that requires a connection to a server is constantly skipping around and losing connection. I should also note that I am less than 15 feet away from my wireless router. Any ideas?

So recently I've been this problem with my computer. It's always at a random time, it doesn't necessarily seem to have a specific pattern, but it always seems to happen when I'm either playing a game, listening to music, or watching a video. It could be connected, or it could happen at random, I'm not sure. Basically the computer completely locks up, freezes entirely, and the sound loops/stutters on the last sound that was being played endlessly. It NEVER crashes, and I do not ever receive a BSOD. I have tested, waiting over 15 minutes for it to do anything, it simply sits there and remains locked up and frozen until I hard restart my computer.

I have absolutely no idea what's causing this, as I've never had an issue with my computer like this, especially something that doesn't produce atleast an error or BSOD of some kind, so it's rather puzzling.

Using Google Chrome as a browswer I attempted to log into my facebook and could not. Since anyone using the pc would have used IE to get online I looked at the history. When I looked into history to see if someone else used my pc and found this:

Hi
Ever since I bought my new laptop, I can't see my IE browsing history. It shows ''Computer'', followed by a lot of hex numbers.

I have an urgent need to find a site I visited yesterday, but the History isn't displaying any site names.

Can anyone tell me why it's showing hex codes and how to make it show site addresses like my old computer did?

Thanks heaps to anyone who can help.

This is a recent problem I ran into with my new 7559. About a week ago I did a factory reset because the speakers were having a problem, and it worked fine for a couple days. Afterwards it would go into this flickering loop after it would wake up from sleep. This makes it so anytime I'm not using the laptop I basically have to shut it down, which really ***. I've used gpedit to allow manual control of updates and manually download and install updates when available, and I set "Notifiy to download" option. That gave me control similar to what I had with Win7. Or so I thought. But the Reliability Monitor shows the installation of many more updates than shown in Update History. Some of them are driver installations so don't represent actual Windows updates, but many of the are updates to Windows "apps" (Skype, Phone, Solitaire, Twitter, etc.). Are these updates considered to be different from "Windows updates"?

Now, I did check the "Give me updates for other Microsoft products when I update Windows" option, but I assumed that meant it would give the same kind of download notification.

Is there any way to turn off this automatic installation of Windows apps updates? I use none of the Microsoft Windows apps.

Hi, this has been an ongoing problem on multiple computers. This has happened on IE 6 and IE 7 (XP & 2000) where a user will go to websites, then restart the computer, and the next time they access IE, their history is gone (to an extent, see attachment). I've reinstalled IE a few times, ran updates, increased disk space for Temp. Internet Files, and increased days to keep history to 99 (instead of the default of 20). I've noticed that there is always a share in the history ex: \\pc1033\c$ (see picture), even though the user has NEVER typed that in and it's not a mapped drive on the PC. The new PC in question is a Dell Optiplex 745, with 1 GB RAM and 1.8 GHZ Dual Processors.Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!!Thanks.[recovering space - attachment deleted by admin]

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

Thanks.

Hi there

My Satellite is installed with Vista and every thing is working as it should, but everytime it starts up
the little box shows up telling you to restart the computer to finish the installation. (see all the text below)

I did not install the computer myself, so i was wondering if the installation has been interrupted
during automatic installation. (even though everything works as it should)

My text is in Danish, but translated it says:

"Now the computer is ready for use. You should
restart the computer to insure that all adjustments

Hi,

So here's my audio setup.

I have a GTX970 which is connected via HDMI 2.0 to my Vizio M70-C3 tv. My Vizio 5.1 Soundbar is connected via the included HDMI cable from the soundbar to the ARC hdmi port on the TV.

What is happening is that I'll go away from my PC for 5-10 minutes to 8hrs and when I come back and try to play a movie or watch any video online (youtube) there is no sound. But when I restart the "Windows Audio" service, sound comes back on.

I tried setting the TV's CEC function to ARC only but I still encounter the same issue. I also changed the power settings on my PC so that the screen and PC don't shut down, but when I turn off the TV, which also turns off the soundbar (which I do when leaving for work) the problem arises and I lose sound again.

I ran the Windows Audio Troubleshooter and selected the Realtek sound option but it told me that no devices are connected.

Any ideas at all on how to fix this?

However, it works perfectly fine from Safe Mode. Heck, I'm even using Safe Mode with Networking to type up this post.

Hi, I'm still 3 days old to Windows 7 and i had this problem.
I installed the latest driver for Windows 7 for my display card ATI HD3870 and downloaded the driver from the official website.
My problem is, after installing the driver.
The installer didn't prompt me to restart the computer.
But since my notification area didn't appear any of ATI icon so i restart it.
But yet after restarting my pc i still don't see any icon and i went to check program files and i saw ati technologies but inside it i don't see a single item.
It's an empty folder.
So did i went to device manager and right click on my display driver and press update driver but it says I'm on the latest driver already.
This is so confusing! Anyone help me please??!

Answer:After installing ATI Driver, restart but shows nothing

i think i know why, maybe because i only downloaded the "Display Driver" but not the catalyst software suite, downloading now, hope it works !

I have to update my Vaio Update software (version 3) to version 4. The instructions on the Sony website say:

1. Download the file to a temporary or download directory (Please note this directory for reference later).
2. Uninstall the existing VAIO Update and restart the unit.
3. After the unit has restarted, please go to the directory where the file was downloaded and double-click EP0000162589.exe.
4. Follow the instructions displayed in the installation wizard.
5. After installation is completed, please restart the computer.

All is clear to me, except that I don't know whether "unit" is another word for "computer", or something different altogether...? If they mean the same thing, then the same word should be used. Anyway, I don't know whether I have to reboot my computer after removing Vaio Update 3 or whether I can install version 4 directly after removing version 3. Sorry if this sounds silly.

Answer:Solved: Restart the unit=restart the computer? Didn't understand Vaio Update instruct

ok download the file to for example my docs next uninstall version3 and restart your comp next get the file from my docs double click the exe follow the wizard instructions when finished restart again hope this helps

Answer:Crashing and says Bios requires Update

I have been having internet crashes and the windows fault reporting system tells me it is the bios that needs updating.
What has BIOS to do with Internet???
BIOS updates are usually a last resort as a failure to update correctly will render the machine as scrap.
I would be more inclined to update ethernet adaptor drivers or wifi drivers (depending on how you connect) or reset the router before doing anything else.

hey guys, i'm having a nightmare with my pc. Kept getting an annoying dialogye bow popping up headed wscntfy.exe and it quoted 0x80000009 and something about not being able to read the memory. i searched for the error and discovered that it was infact a virus. I ran malwarebytes to try and eradicate the problem, it found 28 infections, all of which it was able to delete bar one which required the pc to be restarted. When i booted the pc all i get is a black screen, it comes up after the windows loading page. I can get to the safe mode options page but when i try to load safe mode i get the same black screen. Can somebody please help me as this is extremely annoying

Answer:my pc wont restart, just shows black screen

Are you running two video cards? If so this might be why this is happening in safe mode. Try changing to the onboard video card and see if that helps.

Ok,
I had a Maxtor 30gig hard drive ,I bought a new Maxtor 80gig drive .made the 80 master and 30 slave . Went into the bios auto detectd both drives fine.
Now the 2 drives only show up when i restart. If I shutdown then put pc on it will only show the master drive .Then i restart and the slave drive will show up.that is the problem .no problem to get info from one drive to the other copy paste ,it is ok .Is there anything that I can do to make to slave drive show up when i first put the computer on.Cannot figure it out .It has been like this for about 6 months ,thought maybe give you guys a try in this forum.
Thanks

Answer:Slave Hard drive only shows on restart

Make sure both hard drives are set to cable select (jumper setting on the back of the drives), then make sure the 80 is on the end of the data cable and the 30 is in the middle. Set them both to auto in your bios and that should fix it.

Hope that helps. Rik.

I've had a home network between my laptop and desktop computer that's been working just fine. Wednesday however I upgraded from IE 7 to IE 8. (It's possible that at about the same time I received an automatic download from Window XP.) From that point on, whenever I try to access my network, I get a request for a password. Since no password was ever set up for the network, obviously I don't have one and can't access my other computer. At the same time this happened, the "shut down" box that I see when I go to shut down the system and the box the comes up when the system reboots were changed. And rebooting the system now also requires a password, though simply clicking the "OK" box gets past that.I don't have any viruses. I've uninstalled IE 8, and am now using Firefox. And when I try to set up the network again through the network Wizard, it won't allow me to do it. (It requires a CD to be made, which it won't make because it claims I don't have a removable drive, which of course I do, one that still works perfectly.) I'm clueless, a technical idiot and would appreciate any suggestions.

Today, I had a laptop that failed to complete live update. A chat to norton support was connected quickly. He said "each" computer is unique, and some must be associated with a DMZ. So, I checked the other laptops, desktops, and sure enough they wouldn't complete a live update either. My question:- anyone experienced a problem running live updates on norton security suite?- is it typical to require a DMZ (open to the internet connection) for any purpose other than gaming or videoconferencing?dwEdit: Moved topic from XP to the more appropriate forum. ~ Animal

Hey all,

I have a computer that I am trying to clean up for a friend. It viruses and spyware out the rear. I hae just finished cleaning all of the viruses and worms from the computer. I have found now that it looks as if it was imaged by an organization. Its running WinXP Pro SP2, 466 Mhz, 256 MB of RAM. Its an awfully slow machine. All of its software is new. It has Office 2003 and has Symantec Corporate 10.01 already installed. That is what I used to remove the worms. I am now tring to apply MS updates for both Office 2003 and WinXP. I cannot install the WGA tool that is required to use the Windows Update site. For some reason everytime I install it says it has failed. I have gone to Microsoft and validated the version of Windows manually, but it came to no avail. I noticed that when I went to the Office update site it says that I need the administrative version of this update. Which is making me believe that I need he admin version of Windows updates as well. Does anyone know how I can change this setting? Or lead me to somwhere that does? It would be nice to download the WGA tool manually and attempt to install but I cannot find it anywhere on the internet. Thanks so much!

hello - xp sp2--- in past was able to access 'Windows update' via tools/windows update... then could access option to view what is currently showing as updated i.e. on my computer (update history).
..... suddenly today, that 'feature' is not working - tried everything recommended on the 'site' ..i.e. .added site to pop-blocker/low blockage setting; (never a problem before today).. it tries to 'load' that page - i see it 'flash' briefly then disappear with another page appearing stating there was a problem accessing my personal 'update history' (or whatever the language was - don't remember totally)..
Don't know if this is related but also today i just downloaded & installed the NeT recommended update (restarted computer) and i think it was after that was completed that i tried to view the link for 'history of updates' -without success.
I read ''FAQ'' and did what i wrote above ... HELP! thanks - Edythe
PS: under Security - my NET is showing as 'enabled' - course i haven't a 'clue' what that means - LOL - I also did a virus scan - no problems -

A notification in the task bar says that there is a Java update available on my Windows XP professional computer and I click on it and it presents me with a message "Java installer requires a newer version of Windows." and I hit OK. but later in the day or another day, the same update available shows up with the same requires a newer version of Windows when I click on it.
Why is Java trying to update itself on a version of Windows that the newer version is not compatible with? how do I stop it from showing up?

Answer:Java update available - Requires newer version of Windows; repeat later

Hi Sylveon You should disable the Java Auto Updater program that is being launched on start-up. You can easily do that via the msconfig panel, under the Startup tab. Like for Java Update Scheduler and disable it. Once done, go in the Services tab, look for a service with the same name and disable it as well. That should do the trick.

Hi,

I just downloaded and installed the Windows 10 Anniversary Update yesterday and so far I have noticed some changes in my computer that I was not aware of before the update.

(1) Somehow my System Restore was set to Disabled and all of my restore points are now gone and

(2) All of my Microsoft Update History is also missing.

Could the update be the cause of both?

Thanks and regards,

2harts4ever

Answer:Update History missing after Win10 Anniversary Update

Yes, the update is the cause of both.

Major version upgrades like this change so much functionality, they often have to reset various settings to default so that they are in a known good state. Unfortunately, many have complained about the System Restore option being reset to Disabled (this is the Windows default).

As for your previous restore points, that's to be expected. You can't restore to a previous restore point on a previous OS version. All the baseline files are different, and you would be restoring settings for the old OS if you were to somehow be able to restore it.

Think of it like a Bookmark or favorite, but they've moved the location to a different URL. Restoring the old favorite only points you to somewhere that doesn't exist anymore.

As for #2, your update history is gone because again, it's a fresh OS, and previous updates are all integrated into the OS now, not patches. Those old updates don't apply to the new OS anymore.

I have Windows 7 Pro, and recently noticed that I haven’t been getting Windows Updates.  (I set it to notify me before downloading and installing).

So I ran Windows Update manually and it said that I had 57 items to install.  However, it kept hanging at 0%.  When I cancelled, I noticed that many of the items were listed as “failed” with an 80080008 error code.

After checking the forums, I performed the following commands:

net stop wuauservnet stop cryptSvcnet stop bitsnet stop msiserverren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.oldren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 catroot2.oldnet start wuauservnet start cryptSvcnet start bitsnet start msiserverpause

Then:

net stop wuauserv
regsvr32 %windir%\system32\wups2.dll
net start wuauserv

Now when I run Windows Update, my update history has been deleted and it hangs at “checking for updates.”

I ran sfc /scannow and got no integrity violations.

Thanks in advance for any advice. I must have done something wrong above.

Answer:Windows update-- accidentally deleted history and now it will not update

See http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/616671/what-is-going-on-with-windows-update/page-2 .

There are any number of documented topics about Win 7 Windows Update problems...I've tried most of the postulated attempts at fixes and I don't believe that there is any one which accomodates every situation.  Some things that worked for others...did not work for me.  Trial-and-error is the only solution to some situations in life, IMO.
