auto update issue

Question: auto update issue

I have visited this issue once before and had no solution at that time. So, once again, here goes.

I am hitting the road for 5 months ( USA ) in a motorhome; most places I will be going have poor to insignificant internet access. When I was down with 8.1 I was able to just shut off auto-update completely and turn it back on if and when I was in a suitable location. Also I invest in a portable hot-spot from Verizon that costs a pretty penny and I do not want it eaten up by updates.

So, is there a sure-fire way of just shutting auto-update OFF under my control not Microsoft's control. When I did the move to 10 I failed to save a backup of 8.1 and of course 10 backup overwrote it. I f I had that backup I would put 8.1 back on in a flash. 10 has slowed this laptop down to a crawl and my preferred internet program IE 11 has picked up a heard of issues including script errors up the wazzoo! Not a problem at all with my main desktop PC which is running smoothly on the Windows 7 platform including IE11 and Windows Live Mail ( another regrettable issue In 10.)

So any help would be appreciated. Oh, and I have install Firefox ( testing it for a while now on 7 ) on the laptop as I am tired of the issues in Microsoft programs.

Preferred Solution: auto update issue

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: auto update issue

If you have Win 10 Pro upwards you can set Windows update to Notify only.
That would be ideal for you.

We deployed ~50 HP ProDesk 600 G1's in the enterprise environment I work at.  We have them set to auto-update the BIOS and we deployed a BIOS password.  Every time there is a BIOS update pushed by HP when the machines reboot they appear like they are trying to PXI boot and hang.  Are there any ways to allow the auto-update without providing the password or to just boot normally?

I should start by saying that I just removed XP Total Security trojan/rogue yesterday. A website ran me through some registry keys to delete/change and after that I ran Mbam and BitDefender online scanner to check for infections.

All seems to be better now, except that in my system tray, Windows Security Alerts has a red icon, warning me that AU are turned off. When I try letting that program turn them on, it fails and gives instructions to do so manually. The odd thing is that in the Control Panel, System tab, AU appear to be on.

I'm not sure what to do, or if it's a sign that something is still worng. Any help would be appreciated

(I'm using Windows XP Media Center Edition, SP3)

Edit: In addition, I receive this message when I visit the Windows manual AU site:
"The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem."

Answer:Windows Auto Update issue after a Virus

Problem solved!

Microsoft had actually given me an error code on the updates site, which was cleverly hidden in the top right corner. The error code was:

"Error number: 0x80070424"

After seeing this number, I searched through the Microsoft support database and easily found a solution to enable WAU. I just had to reinstall the program. No signs of any virus remaining, and AU has been repaired. My thanks to anyone who considered my problem and apologies if I've wasted your time.

Thank you for your help. I've looked through many forums with similar problems as mine but not exactly or a probable solution for me. I apologize if I overlooked one on your site...

Summary: My PC has been acting strange for three days now. It started, (perhaps coincidentally), after "Windows Update" ran and installed updates on 2/11/09. Unfortunately, it has been a busy three days for my pc and I have summed up all the issues, changes and specs below. I apologize for the lengthy post and if I am incorrectly posting this in Vista forums. Thanks, GSS.

ISSUE:
1) Windows explorer stopped responding when changing Windows display settings from Standard to Aero, (I put in standard for online gaming per gamespot forum advice to decrease lag).
2) Computer operation has slowed immensely including execution of programs, end of line startup (pre-login is normal; desktop load is slower), & the initial Vista startup audio chops as well as the desktop Vista audio chops, also shutdown vista audio chops.
3) All online fullscreen video mode, (flashplayer only, veoh/tuduo works fine), is a slideshow instead of fluent video. This occurs in IE & Firefox, (I use no other browsers).
4) CPU usage seems higher than usual at some times. It will just be working away even though Norton idle and not consuming hardly any resources.
***NOTE: Operation was normal before 2/11, none of the above issues were present on this system setup***

Answer:[SOLVED] Issue with Vista since Auto-Update

Hi, welcome to the forums, I am afraid your attempts to fix this problem may well have made it worse. First thing to do is uninstall KB 960544 (you can download it later)

Next uninstall the reg cleaner (Uniblue) it will not help and will have made the situation worse REG cleaners should never be run, despite what you read they are more likely to be the cause rather then the solution. Never run CCleaners reg cleaner as well. Vista simply does not need them.

Next you will need to Uninstall Office even though you did not activate it, it's presence on your system plays havoc with your major problem.

Major problem, Norton you need to be rid of this program it is simply not suitable for home computer use. Go to Nortons web site (symantec) and download their uninstaller.

http://service1.symantec.com/Support...05033108162039

Use AVG free for Virus protection (or for the best AV get Nod32) and activate the inbuilt windows firewall.

My Laptop touch pad stop working after critical update, I uninstalled the update but issue came back after few days and window update itself automatically. I tried installing generic synaptic driver that did not update the mouse driver, tried force update after extracting driver in a file, it also did not work. Finally I reinstall the BIO A10. Although I had same BIOS but it flash it again, and then reinstall the latest same touch pad driver from dell support side that was issued some time time 2015. Wasted 4 days and was ready to through out laptop off windows. Hope it help and save some time anyone one who has issue. Dell support is pathetic in this regard.

after an automatic XP update, I cannot open my browser. When I click to open my home page, I get "conneting to 205.203.140.1" instead of "connecting to comcast.net" or whatever home page I am using. I then get the no conection message from windows.
If I restore to an earlier time, there is no problem. what can I do to correct this and get back on the internet. (I am using IE 7)

Answer:Solved: issue connecting to internet after auto update

If you cannot open your browser I have no idea what the problem is.

But if the problem is with internet access, see the sticky (about ZoneAlarm) at the beginning of the Networking forum.

Hi, I have an issue where my computer auto updates drivers, and it causes my computer to stop playing videos.  Annoyingly, it also stops Steam from working too, which makes it where I can't play my games.  I have a temporary solution. I downloaded this driver from the HP website, and it fixes the problem  Here are the driver details. win64_154510.4542 Driver Version: 21.20.16.4542Release Version: Production VersionPlatforms/ Operating System(s):7th Gen Intel® Core? processor family7th Gen Intel® Pentium® processor family7th Gen Intel® Celeron® processor familyMicrosoft Windows* 10-646th Gen Intel® Core? processor familyMicrosoft Windows* 7-64Microsoft Windows* 8.1-64Microsoft Windows* 10-64Intel® Xeon® Processor E3-1500 v5 Product FamilyMicrosoft Windows* 7-64Microsoft Windows* 8.1-64Microsoft Windows* 10-64Intel® Xeon® Processor E3-1200 v5 Product FamilyMicrosoft Windows* 7-64Microsoft Windows* 8.1-64Microsoft Windows* 10-64Release Date: November 3, 2016  However, my computer randomly reapplies whatever new driver comes along, and it breaks my videos and games again.  I have to deal with this pretty much every day.  I run the driver installation, reboot the computer, and temporarily have the problem solved.  Is there a way to apply this driver to be permanant, or is there a better fix?   Thanks

Microsoft

We are having an issue printing from our EHR medical program since a forced update that our support department at EMR says is coming from a overly aggressive Windows Security Update.
See attached.  We were instructed to uninstall the update but it continues to reinstall when restarting each computer. We have about 13 computers and 8 Microsoft surface tablets.   All computers are running various versions of Windows
8.1 to 10.  You cannot stop the updates from occurring.  Is there a fix because this is seriously affecting our work daily.

From my EHR  tech:

Uninstalling the update fixed the issue.  I would de-select this update on all machines as you apply the latest round.

I am letting development know... I am not sure if they will fix or if Microsoft may release an update to the update first.

Have had Y410p for years without this issue. Now when I move the mouse cursor across the screen, it auto clicks/auto selects (without me tapping or clicking) and then release automatically as well. It will do this continuously as I keep moving the mouse cursor with the Touchpad. This is super annoying and causes multiple issues with my ability do most things on my Lenovo laptop. The two biggest problems are: click buttons which I do not intend and selecting/moving icons & screens which I do not intend. And it makes it nearly impossible to use the laptop for gaming. I have downloaded and reinstalled the Touchpad ELAN driver (version 11.4.17.1 for my O/S Windows 8). I have gone through Mouse Properities setting and ELAN Smart-Pad settings. I have disabled Tapping, but does not make a difference. I have set Sensitivity to max Low and then max High, but does not make a difference. Any ideas on how to solve this particularly annoying Touchpad issue? Help please! Thanks.

Answer:IdeaPad Touchpad issue with auto-clicking/auto-selecting when moving mouse cursor

Disable TAPPING in the Synaptic control panel. See the screen shot via the Device settings tab and properties. TAPPING is unchecked - a useless feature and a easy way to wreck and operating system and/or loose files. Its far too easy to tap drag and drop a folder or worst without realizing it until its too late. If its a system fie/folder you likely won't boot the next time or you kill an application. I have been diabling this on notebooks for decades. DEADLY feature.

I'm troubleshooting sound driver issues and have come across something peculiar. I tried shutting off the auto driver update for windows because I do not want the specific drivers that they are going to use. In the screenshot you can see that an installation occurs even with the setting turned off. My question is, are these some default generic type audio drivers such that they will not interfere with the soundcard drivers? Is this some background type driver that will be installed regardless?

You can click on the picture to enlarge it up to enlarge it up to 1680x1050.

Thanks for help.

First issue is that I need to use a specific older driver for my AMD graphics card and windows 10 continues to update the driver automatically and causes my system to crash. I've gone through {Control Panel-Devices & printers}, selected my machine, then right clicked to Device Installation Settings and selected "no, let me choose what to do". This has no effect as windows continues to update the driver daily or anytime I search for updates. Is there a specific port I can block or cmd line to run?

Second issue, on the windows update window, the feature is frozen on Service Pack 1 for MS Office 2013 (KB2850036) 64-bit edition @ 61%. It's been like this for a week. I've restarted the machine several times and seems to do nothing. Any suggestions would be very helpful.

Thanks.

Sorry if my post title is a little longwinded - but these three problems seem to be related. After installing and running MSE I have been unable to update definitions either manually or automatically. At the same time I noticed that microsoft automatic updates are getting to around 28 percent and then stopping - not fully downloading or installing. I cannot get through to any microsoft websites now - but all other sites are fine. wuauserv and bits are missing from services also. Have I been sneakily virused by something which MSE hasnt picked up. I tried to run malicious software removal tool - it downloads alright but wont install - says its not a valid win32 application. I correctly downloaded the 32bit app. Can anyone shed some light on any of this. I dont want to rebuild again - again. Thanks.

This was a nasty virus. I would attempt to run windows update but it would give me an error code and told me to check my connection. Norton would not update. Most free AV I could download but not update. When I would do any search on Google or MSN, it would redirect. It would also give me a google page does not exist if I went to a windows download update sit. After 2 days of working on this issue and using every AV I could find, I stumbled across a google group addressing this problem. It said to access this website, http://www.softpedia.com/get/Antivirus/Trojan-Remover.shtml This trojan was nasty but the program took about 5 minutes and cleared it. I didn't even have to go into safe mode. If your having this same issue, give this a shot before reinstalling anything, Hope it helps.

Hi All,
Home XP. My wife recently got hit with some baddies and I have run Spybot. Superantispyware,MalwareAntimalware, CClesner and MS essentials.( I had to re-innstall
MS essentials after it would not connect.)
They had identified several stuff and removed or deleted them. I'm still not comfortable that all is right.
When trying to use the MS update page it will not load, plus her Automatic Updates can NOT be turned on from the
Security Center even though it says it is on in the system/automatic updates
Just as a matter of course, I wanted to run any updates from MS and I get a big red X saying the page isn't accessible
Any thoughts or help would be most appreciated

I have Word 2002, SP3, for Windows Office XP Pro.

My problem is I want to permanently turn OFF the autocorrect options (all of them: correct initial capitals, correct first letters of days, etc etc, autoformat, as well as auto text and auto type).

Yes, I have unchecked all the boxes in Tools > Autocorrect Options, the problem is I have to painstakingly go though all the boxes every time I open Word and uncheck them. My setups are not remembered.

I can't figure out how to make these options stay set this way.

I've tried installing the Office Resource Kit and setting a system policy (though I am the only user on this PC), but no success.

I had to rebuild my system a month ago -- before that, I never had any problems, Word seemed to remember exactly my preferred set up and saved autocorrect options etc to the normal template.

I checked the normal template and it is in Doc Settings folder where it should be.

I searched the forums and Word help but can't seem to find any advice, mainly because most people usually run these options and they only wish to modify the instances where they apply, rather than permanently disable them.

Please help! Much appreciated! Thanks!

I have a interesting problem that is probably something I am overlooking. When I finally installed IE7 with the updates, it finally worked great except for one issue. When I use the Auto complete feature for certain forms and passwords, it will ask if I want to store them and on certain ones that I do not worry about security issues ,I say yes. It saves the info but the issue is that when I return to the site later, it does not auto complete or offer a few suggestions the way it used to in IE6.The proper boxes are checked in options to use auto complete and save passwords and it does work but just does not auto complete when it should. Example: This site as I would log in would show my logon and complete the password, now it stays blank...Any Ideas??Moderator Edit: Moved topic to more appropriate forum. ~ Animal

Hi There, I seem to have a problem with my auto responder. I used my hosting accounts cpanel to setup. It is a very basic one. But when I send emails to myself, the auto responder message comes back fine. But the email does not get through to my POP3 email account. I have used the steps to setup my account. But without any luck. I use MS Outlook. So I'm trying to send test emails from my hotmail account. But can't figure out why they are not getting through. I've checked my webmail of my hosting account and the emails are appearing there. So it looks like the email setup on my hosting account is alright. So it must be with MS Outlook. Can you setup multple account names with the same domain name. For example: [email protected] and [email protected]. And they both come through to the same Outlook inbox?

Question: Auto Dialer Issue

Good day,My name is Sparky and I need some help. I am helping an elderly neighbor with his computer. It is an older Gateway w/ 1.4 GHz Celeron 256 MB RAM running a 2002 version of XP Pro that someone else must have installed at some point. The guy has no discs and the product key on the machine is for XP Home. The OS won't validate so I can't run any updates.Anyhow, he still uses dial-up through NetZero. Last week a window started popping up and trying to use the modem. In the Windows Task Manager the application points to the rasautou.exe process. While this pop-up tries to use the modem the NetZero application is not able to dial out.I have run Spybot S&D, Malwarebyte's, SuperAntiSpyware, and Avast! While they did clean up a number of other issues, this one persists. Nuance of interest. I have cable internet. If I enable the LAN connection and reboot, the dialer does not seem to activate. Answer:Auto Restart Issue

It looks like it's an issue with an optical drive not supporting audio or something like that... wonder if it's the Virtual Clone Drive causing an issue... or mayby a cd in a optical drive that's failing IDK

I have a side client who's recently upgraded their internet service from a single T1 to a 100mb fiber line. TW Telecom brought the fiber line into their building and run it through a Cisco 3400 which hands it off to TW Telecom's Adtran 4430. If I take my laptop and assign it the appropriate IP and subnet and plug straight into the Adtran I get close to full speeds so I can rule out the ISP (I think).

It comes out of the Adtran to a Cisco RVS4000 setup as a gateway and then feeds off to a Cisco SG200-50 and Cisco 248G switches. Anything from the RVS4000 and beyond on the customer side will only receive a quarter of the speeds I get if I plug straight to the Adtran. I talked to the tech from TW Telecom and they have confirmed the Adtran is hard coded for 1GB Full Duplex speeds so I'm going to assume the RVS4000 needs to match that. I'm not 100% sure on how to make sure the RVS4000 is set to that. In the Admin GUI for the RVS I've gone under the L2 Switch Port Settings and set them to match the Adtran but it makes no difference. Not even too sure if it's where I should be looking but since there doesn't seem to be any other section for it I figured what the hell.

At this point I'm assuming I'm getting some sort of port duplex conflict and need to figure out where to make adjustments. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Bandwidth issue, Auto Negotiation?

Since you think that its set for 1GB on the RVS4000, it just might be that it can't push more than 25mbps. Remember, 1GB is only Full duplex.

According to the default factory hardware setting, the graphics setting should automatically switch to the external GPU(AMD R9 M375) while the laptop has been plugged in. This, however, isn't happening anymore. The graphics setting stays at the in-built Intel graphics. The only way to play games at the AMD card is to manually choose "High Perfomance" against the switchable graphics application settings from the AMD control center. Previously, I didn't have to go through all this hassle as the graphics used to switch to AMD automatically while charging. I'm experiencing a few more graphic related issues because of this. I explained this issue at the service center, but found no luck. I guess they were way too qualified to understand this issue. I've already tried resetting my laptop. Any ideas ?

I just installed a new monitor in my computer and when i turn the computer on the screen brightness and picture is perfect for about 5 to 10 seconds. After that time it turns really bright and its hard to see anything. I am guessing it has to do with auto adjust and I was wondering how to turn that off on a hp dv5000 laptop running windows xp sp 2. Adjusting the brightness and stuff does not help much. Thanks

I had a feeling something like this might happen. I have two outstanding updates which will not install. One is an update for Office 2003 even though I do not have any Office 2003 installed on my brand new computer and the second is for my HP Envy printer. When it kept failing I visited the HP website and updated the latest drivers but Windows 10 still tells me I need to update through Windows update and then fails. I can see these failed updates adding up and wonder what is going to happen as they remind me to update every day and then fail.

I have had an Acer Aspire 1830T-3425 laptop for nearly 2 years.  I recently lost the battery charger / power cord that came with it when purchased.  Since then, I have been using a universal charger that came with multiple adapter heads.  The past few times I've used the laptop while plugged in, it seems to get extremely hot.  Then, it shuts down suddenly in the middle of a video or other usage.  I was wondering about a few things: (1) Do you think that this universal-type charger is causing the overheating?  (2) Is it common for a laptop to simply shutdown when it reaches a certain point of overheating?  (3) Aside from the charger (if it is the problem), is there anything else I can do about the problem?

Answer:Overheating / Auto Shutdown Issue

I would not trust any universal charger especially for laptops. More Information.

I have an Acer AL1916 monitor. The default auto config runs every time it comes on after the screen goes blank for the screen saver. The default setting is incorrect according to http://techmind.org/lcd/index.html. After I run the clock and focus adjustment to get the recommended setting an the above site I get clear text. As soon as the auto config runs the settings return to the default that is not the settings I made. Then I have to go through this again. How can I 'save' my settings OR how can I stop the 'auto config' from running, even at start up. This becoming really annoying.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

I believe you have to disable it through AMD Catalyst Control Center. Go there, and to the Powerplay section. Beware, whenever you update the graphics driver it defaults back to on.

But now to my problem...As everyone else I'm new to Final Cut Pro X and I've stumbled across a "problem" that I jut can't seem to figure out. When I'm editing clips and want to preview them, the previews come out very dark. I don't get this. It seems that the entire color scheme is being pushed off balance. However, the stills on the timeline stay in tact.

The colors in the timeline are what it should look like. If you gaze up to the preview box you'll notice the text is purple and the clouds sky becomes very dark. If anyone has a solution to this please let me know!

This is a problem that one of my coworker's computer is having. I do some pro bono computer repair and maintenance for the guys I work with, and generally have no trouble removing whatever viruses or problems they have. But I had one this morning that is sort of putting me at a loss.

His computer is an older eMachines with WinXP on it. The problem is that whenever he logs in, it just automatically logs out after a few seconds. No windows keyboard commands work during this period. I tried booting in safe mode, and it does the exact same thing, logging out as soon as he logs in.
My next step was to boot him into a linux livecd, but I didn't have one on me so thats going to wait til tomorrow.

Whats getting me on this one is that safemode isn't working. I'm starting to think that theres something wrong with his harddrive or his Windows install thats causing Windows to load incorrectly and so it logs itself out. He said that he hadn't done anything unusual before this started happening, so this is really just getting me. Any ideas?

So do you use Auto update? Does Microsoft tell you when to update your system?

As a IT Tech I turn off just about ever possible thing that says "auto".

So of course my vote here is no.

I know some people even go as far as installing beta updates.

Just wandering why people play into it, or maybe I just don't like being controlled.

I find that most updates do more breaking then they do fixing if they are not tested first and then implemented correctly.

Answer:Who uses Auto update?

i have mine set to auto-update.

i have had zero issues with anything. if i was that paranoid about being controlled i would run linux

Question: AVG Auto-update

gold47 asked why we have to ask these threads advising of updates for AVG antivirus. One can configure AVG to check for updates automatically. From the Program Menu, open AVG control centre. From the Update Manager tab, check the box "Allow scheduled update" update if database is older than 1 day, then set the time when you are usually online. AVG will check for updates daily.I have noticed that the recent ones have not applied themselves automatically, as they used to do, but they are applied automatically the next time that you run AVG.Some people don't have always on connections, so they may prefer to check manually.

Answer:AVG Auto-update

I have always on connection, but always do a manual check just in case. Only a matter of a couple of clicks.

Question: sp3 auto update

Hi , i just reinstalled windows xp pro sp2 (oem version ) on my pc. (a box with a biostar m7ncg400 ver7 motherboard ) i repartition /formated the hard drive and it went beautifully until i try to install sp3 with auto update... i started the update and walked away. after about an hr i came back. it was still in the same place. my mouse wouldn't move.so i assumed it was frozen. i restarted it and got blue screen saying start up was reverting to original settings. i let i go until this am. and screen still the same so i restarted it again now i have nothing ...a black screen any ideas?
thank u

ps: i also have firefox as my browser

Answer:sp3 auto update

Well...you can download SP3 and install it from your desktop.

I cannot explain the black screen...no point in me guessing wildly.

What bothers me...you have these problems right after a clean install...which would make me suspect hardware problems.

That board is pretty old...could be hard drive, PSU, etc.

I would erase the hard drive...run a diagnostic on it, then (if it passes) attempt a clean install. If necessary, you can probably use the appropriate diagnostic utility to wipe the drive.

I would slipstream SP3 into the files from your CD, Slipstreaming Windows XP To Create a Bootable Windows XP CD or DVD - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/slipstreaming-windows-xp-to-create-bootable-cd/

Louis

What was the reason...that you attempted the reinstall of XP?

also.. how do i hide unused icons in the system tray?

Most likely you will need to go to the windows update site and let it install the latest WGA first.

For the icons, right-click the taskbar and go to Properties - Check 'Hide inactive icons'.

I was downloading a bunch of critical updates using the "Update Windows" feature in Windows XP Home. I lost my connection about halfway through.

Now, when I look at the install status for those updates, it says "Failed", yet when I go back to Windows Update those updates are gone. I can't even find them manually on MS's site (Maybe I'm not looking in the right place?)

Does anyone know how to make my system think it never tried to download these updates in the first place?

Are you able to remove them from Add/Remove in the Control Pannel? I don't know if they'd show up there if they didn't install but it may be worth a look...

I have a Toshiba P205-S6347 running Viste Home Premium 32 bit. The problem seems to be my video card which is built in, Mobile Intel 965 Express chipset Family. I am running version 7.14.10.1329. I read that SP1 will not update if the driver version is between 7.14.10.1322 and 7.14.10.1403. Tried to download the drivers from Intels webside they were not compatable. I called Toshiba support, they told me the driver I have is the moste recent driver and that I would not be able to upgrade to SP1.

Basically, what you have is it!!!!!!!!!!

I was wondering if anyone with a Toshiba notebook having this chipset found a work around or a driver that works?

Answer:Can't get SP1 from auto update

Hi, gtspeck, and welcome to the forums.
You could try demanding a refund from Toshiba for designing a laptop that will not let you get SP1, or You could try uninstalling the current video driver, using the very crappy default VGA driver (DO not reboot) and then let SP1 install. After that, the video driver should be automatically found again when you reboot....

Question: xp auto update

I have recently done a system destructive recovery on my computer. I have to do this every 2 months becouse of my low RAM. I was going to upgrade to a larger ram, but my computer tech said it would be a waste of money. Anyway... I choose to manualy choose the updates for my computer. I counted 68 updates that i would have put on my computer if i had choosen to auto install the updates. probaly becouse this is a 8 year old computer. Is all these updates nessasary for me to operate safely? This is a "myspacecomputer " for my little girl. I dont plan to invest anything into this computer. I'll probaly just buy her one for xmas. Thanks for all your help!

Answer:xp auto update

You need all the security updates, nothing more or less. But these updates are really necessary. And these updates have nothing to do with the amount of RAM installed to that computer. If Windows XP is running on that computer (maybe a bit slowly), it will also run after you've installed the security updates. If you don't make these necessary updates, you may have to make a fresh installation because of virus infection, which one don't really wants to do.The original poster should always write the last response !!!Let us know, if the problem is solved !!!

Hi guys

Have a guy who can't get AVG 8.0 to keep the auto-update settings. Any ideas why?

Not sure if it's a feature they disabled in the 'free version', or if possibly there may be some sort of spyware that may be blocking the settings.

Thanks.

I have got several of these displaying the same problem. Despite the fact that the "after power loss" setting in the bios is set to "Power On", intermittently, some of these units don't, even if they are left "powered off" for several minutes. The problem I have is the pc itself is buried inside another unit and it's a pain to get to, to simply push the power button (which immediately boots the PC).I installed the latest bios update (2.09) - made no difference. Any ideas?

Hello,

I just had a shocking experience. I was playing an online game, and while downloading in-game patch, I changed the screen to Desktop. However, in Vista desktop, I saw that Windows Vista was trying to install WMP 11. I tried to stop and close the installation windows, but it didn't work. I went to Program Manager and tried to shut down the process, and it didn't work either. I used Process Tree shut down, but still no luck. WMP 11 installation window kept going in a loop along with Windows Explorer error.

I managed to shut down Windows Vista, but when it rebooted, I heard a weird noise and beep coming out of my HDD and PC. I used Windows Safe Mode, but it didn't help much. And, when I was required to enter my password for Windows, I saw a peculiar text beneath the box (I don't remember the exact words). So, I took off my RAM and reboot the system, and it successfully reboot the system. I used MS Security Essential to seek for intrusion, but nothing was found. I also downloaded some files from Microsoft related to WMP exploits (they were all made in 2012), but none of them were applicable to my system. Probably they have been installed on my system already since this system has just been rebuilt recently.

Some big questions here. Is this a viral attack? Because it happens all of sudden and I couldn't terminate the looping system. It's like trying to destroy my HDD. If so, is it possible that the attack came from someone I know in this online game? Or, is this purely a... Read more

Welcome
I dont know of any virus that can actually destroy hardware. In any event, run a full anti virus scan, if you can.
Download and run a full scan with malwarebytes, if you can.
If you can run this software and it is positive, remove the virus.
If it is negative, just to be on the safe side go back with a system restore point.

A small, probably a silly issue. But I cannot resolve this.

My computer time is off by 1hr - obviously the DST changes have caused this issue.

In my date/time settings:
Timezone: Eastern (-5)
Automatically adjust for daylight saving time: Checked

In Internet Time:
Automatically synchronize with Internet time server: Checked
Dropdown selection on: time.microsoft.com

I just did an update of internet time synchronization and it changed the computer time to 8:55am when the correct time is 9:55am.

I tried downloading the DST update from Microsoft, but when I try to install it, it tells me that this update is already installed.

This is messing up my Outlook, which is in turn messing up my sync with my Smartphone.

Hi Rollerr,

I usually just go to the clock properties and set the proper time there.
Would this not work for you?

Alrighty, I've seached high and low, and I think it's going to take some VB code embedded into this worksheet.

The deal is, I've created an invoice for a client, and there are description fields/cells (k, I'm having deja vu, but I couldn't find a thread where I might have posted this last week) where I might need to accommodate text that extends beyond the width of the cell.

I've seen a few references to this, but most refer to expanding the column width, which won't work for this form.

Has anyone had to deal with this?

I have an XPS 13 9350 running Windows 7 64bit with a Dell 1820a 11ac wireless adaptor and when connecting any USB or thunderbolt dock with a Realtek wired adaptor the wlan switching to LAN does not work. Both wired and wired remain on and I have the latest wireless driver from Dell. No where in the BIOS does it show a setting to turn on or off WLAN/LAN auto switching. Now if we use the Windows 10 OS on the XPS the lan/wlan switching works. Any ideas or is this a limitation to the driver on Windows 7?

Hello,

I've been having an issue with my PC, currently on a laptop, and need serious help. The PC recently got a virus where the background was overtaken by a new bg that stated my computer was infected. I couldn't change the background. I then ran McAfee to clean up the system and upon a reboot I now find that the system will boot, but upon clicking on a user name it logs in and immediately logs the user back off. I've tried booting into safe mode and get the 'blue screen' each time. I also tried logging in as Administrator and get logged off immediately as well.

Does anyone know of any solutions for this problem?

Answer:Your System is Infected virus and auto log off issue

Hello.

Your problem appears to be a hijacked system file. Do you have your Windows XP Disk with you if this is an XP system?

Let me know what OS this is and what service pack it has installed.

With Regards,
Extremeboy

Answer:System Restore Auto Remove Issue

Just an update, I managed to open Malwarebytes and cleared the system restore however there is still a few issues:

1. I am still getting occasionally redirected to random sites when entering certain sites such as malwarebytes or bleeping computer.
2. The unhide file was used and I managed to get the start up back, however many of the applications inside the all programs bar still says none
3. Randomly, sound of advertisements and other stuff would be playing in the background even though nothing is there. I noticed this IEXPLORE.EXE everytime that has alot of memory usage and the advertisements will go away if I end the process

Thanks

Hello. is it possible to set windows defender to auto update without having auto updates turn on, i have microsoft update set to ask me first but would like to allow defender to update without asking hope that make some sense to someone

Answer:defender auto update

Hello baccini,
Your question is ambivalent.... to this one. I don't use Defender.
{The purpose of having an auto update facility turned on is to allow a program to do just that.}

I would suggest you consider an alternative to Defender.

Two free programs for you to check out & choose one from { if you are so inclined} are SuperAntiSpyware & Malwarebytes.
Both work happily with Win 7.
SUPERAntiSpyware.com | Remove Malware | Remove Spyware - AntiMalware, AntiSpyware, AntiAdware!

Malwarebytes : Download free malware, virus and spyware tools to get your computer back in shape!

A favorite app has recently started automatically updating itself. There is no setting to turn this off. Most of the time, the updates are defective when released so I would prefer to manually update when I'm sure they are safe. Is there any Windows 7 setting where I can disable this? Permissions, perhaps? Or ownership? I've emailed their support but it generally takes weeks (or months) for them to provide assistance.

Answer:App does not allow me to disable auto-update

What is the app ?
