Preferred Solution: upgrades not loading

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: upgrades not loading

then unable to install deleting update

What does that mean?

Do Dell Vostro 2520 Laptops support RAM upgrades and/or Processor Upgrades? Please explain.

It's been 3 years with Vostro 2529 and I'm extremely satisfied with performance. I just wabt to upgrade the CPU and/or RAM, to continue using for few more years.
Please explain if possible, how and if not, why.

Answer:Do Dell Vostro 2520 Laptops support RAM upgrades and/or Processor Upgrades? Please explain.

Desktops can be upgraded but it is not easy or cost effective on laptops even if it were possible. Save the money for a new computer. Ram can be upgraded to 8GB. So if you already have 8 gb you are at the max. Read this review for the difficulty of upgrading this model--

Regarding the 3040 MT. The I-5 6500 version. The 3040 MT lists a PSU of 240 watts. I want to add a GPU. The Dell Social Media Support guy (from the Dell forums) said that the Nvidia GT 745 was one of the video cards tested.
Nvidia's site lists the GT 745 as a 55 watt GPU with a 300 watt PSU requirement for that 745 card. Yet the Dell team found no problems with the GT745. Can someone explain this for me?
I want to upgrade the GPU, but do not want to wreck something by doing so. The GPU card I really want is the GTX 1050 which is a 75 watt card but all other parameters are the same as the 745. Mechanically it will fit perfectly. The only issue is the wattage.
Second, is there some listed PSU upgrades available? Or perhaps adapters for aftermarket PSU's? How difficult is it if I wanted to upgrade to a more powerful PSU? Does Dell have that option with this computer?
I spent 32 hopeless minutes on Dell's support phone line listening to people read out specs from the sales brochure. Nobody, even in so called "tech support" could answer the questions.
Can ANYONE here please help me on this?

Answer:Optiplex 3040 MT Mini Tower Question about PSU upgrades and GPU Upgrades

Our OEM (original equipment manufacturer) customized GeForce GT 745 X61TN is not the same card as the retail GeForce GT 745. The memory and clock settings may differ. That is the difference. But it is easy to remove our 240w PSU (power supply unit) and install a higher wattage PSU. Read through the Owner's Manual. It has instructions on how to do this. The retail Geforce GTX 1050 needs at least a 300w PSU. Another 3040 owner will need to post a retail PSU that has worked.

I'm a heavy gamer and after owning this PC for almost 2 years upgrading it several times, I feel that the RAM is a bit slow and the timings may not be good for gaming. So, is 1600mhz the fastest the mobo supports? Also, could anybody tll me the sizes of the fans that this PC shipped with? I'd like to  replace them with faster, 'classier' fans (and maybe a cpu cooler upgrade)

Hi All, I recently bought a T440s but the shipment keeps getting delayed and I won't have the laptop I need for my business by the time I need it. When I shop locally in Toronto I can't find any  T440s's with the 12GB of RAM and the 500GB SSD that I need. Can anyone confirm what the expansion options are? My gut tells me to buy a T440s locally with 4GB of RAM and that means I should be able to buy my own 8GB stick and add it to it. From my understanding there is 4GB permantly installed on the mainboard and any 4GB option I could buy would always have an empty expansion slot. I have also read that the T440s comes with an empty M.2 slot that I can use to add some extra storgage. I am not familiar with the M.2 slot, can someone please elaborate? I think if I buy a local 4GB version with a 256GB (which is available here), I can add an 8GB stick and possibly add more storage if I need. As an FYI, the model I got is also the i7 with the FHD screen. Thanks!

Answer:Thinkpad T440s Memory upgrades and SSD Upgrades

I can tell you that it does come with 4gb permanently installed and you can add up to another 8gb stick for a total of 12gb. I added 4gb to my T440s a few days ago. It is doable but a complete pain in the rear. Go slow, use a plastic spudger and GO SLOW. I can point you to a link or two that helped me if you want.   204 pin DDR3-1600 SO-DIMM PC3-12800 is what you want. Make sure it is 1.35v. Just my opinion, but 8gb total is probably plenty for this machine unless your needs specifically require more.

I think that is a good idea, make sure to get a decent psu though, maybe an OCz powerstream.AT LEAST 400W. the 6800 will need a supplemental power connector since it is agp.

Computer: Not with the computer in question now, but here are some general specs. Running Windows Vista 32 bit Home Premium on a pretty cheap desktop Emachine T series 3626 which came with 1g of ram and 150g of free space.

Issue: After loading bios, booting from hdd, computer loses power during vista loading screen. After 4-5 tries computer does boot successfully but can lose power again at any time with no obvious reasons as to why. Computer won't even boot in safe mode.

*Note. If the computer had been running recently however, the first boot attempt is usually successful.

I have been dealing with this problem for about a month and a half now. It seemed to pop up just after I made some changes to startup config., I copied Reason 4.0 (music production program) and World of Warcraft to my 500 gig external hard drive and have ran both those programs from either my internal HDD or external HDD and also save data on both. I may have changed bios/cmos during that time but it's unlikely. About a 6 months ago I overclocked my computer, and a year ago I installed an extra 500mb of ram. Also my tower tipped over about 2 months ago while it was running but the hit wasn't hard and the computer kept running normally. I wish I could tell you exactly when this issue started and whether or not it was before or after the changes I have made in the past month and a half but I can't remember. Anyways I've tired all sorts of solutions. Here is what I can remember doing.

*Note. After... Read more

Hello. Hope someone here can help me out. A few months ago I got a new motherboard installed because my old one fried itself and the pc was reformatted and windows was reinstalled. Since then, it was working fine. The start-up time had also lowered considerably and it was working perfectly for once.

This problem started a couple of days ago. One thing that's been happening for a while, my computer started taking longer to start-up. I figured it was just all the programs etc I have installed. Then, I have this one external drive that I got connected internally. There were times where it wouldn't recognize this drive; it wouldn't show up on My Computer. Otherwise, it was perfectly fine.

Now two days ago this started happening:
If I didn't skip the disk checking blue screen it would start checking a disk and get stuck there.
Secondly, the screen where it says windows is starting up.. it started taking really long for the profiles to show.
Then once I would log in, it would take extremely long for windows to completely load. There'd be a weird blue long where my quicklaunch bar is and no programs would open unless opened directly through ctlr.alt.dlt--> file --> new task (that's how i'm accessing firefox right now)
When i double click on my computer none of the drives show up.. it takes really long for them to.
and the kicker.. one of my most important drives (E) has been missing for the last 2 days. it hasn't shown up even on... Read more

Answer:Hard-drives not loading. PC extremely slow. Windows not loading properly. HELP!

Hello,

Sounds like a bad hard disk, remove the second disk you installed, and try it out. Does it behave better?

If so, you should reinstall the drive and either:

1. Boot and run 'chkdsk' on the drive. Open a command prompt and type 'chkdsk E:\ /r', assuming the second drive mounts as "E:\", verify this before you run this command, and change as appropriate. Keep in mind that on a particularily large and errored disk this can take hours or,

2. Run the diagnostics that the manufacturer offers on it's web site and test the drive (do a long verify test...not a short one). Fix any errors you encounter. It's best if you get a bootable floppy (or like) version rather than a tool that you install in your windows.

(also a very long test, 500GB SATA2 Seagate's with the 'Seatools for DOS' for example take nearly 4 hours!)

Using chkdsk is very good at keeping your data intact, using Seatools is not, and could corrupt filesystem data (FAT, NTFS, etc.) when you affect a repair, however it is important to fix any errors you encounter to ensure good performance and life of the drive.

If the drive won't repair or BSOD's (crashes) during these operations I would try to backup any data from this drive in your normal setup and then get rid of the drive.

Post back any results from the steps you followed.

Good luck.

So, it started with FF not loading pages very well, "waiting for www.google.com" and such. Switched to IE and google Chrome, same problem. Started looking online for solutions, I have AVG8 installed, no hits. Tried Malewarebytes Anti-Malware, no hits. CCleaner detected two funny things in the startup, TDSS and GEST. Deleted both posts in the startup. Tried ComboFix, don't think that the whole scan went through, rebooted before a log was created and computer said that it restored system after a serious error (my translation from Swedish). During the course of my searching I found you guys, hope someone can help me.I don't know if it is related, but my hotmail has been sending out spam mails to my address book the last few weeks, I think it is caused by Windows Mail.I have also noticed when I try to load more common webpages (Google, various news sites, a Swedish maps/telephone directory page) I would see other sites being requested by the browser in the status bar, didn't think about it until I heard about a redirect virus, but it is definately wierd behavior...) I have followed the instructions in the "Prepare yourself..." post, attaching the required log files from DDS. I could not, unfortunately, get GMER to run completetly, came close once, but it locked up when I was to save the log. Now it just reboots as soon as I oppen the program. Google chrome has been behaving weird lately. On websites using animated javascript or HTML5, it triggers those websites to keep loading and loading when using Chrome. For example , when I visit this classified advertising ads website, the website keeps loading and loading on Chrome but not on firefox or explorer. The same problem happens with YOUTUBE videos as well. I am using a TOSHIBA computer. Is it my computer or is it a bug from Chrome ? The images moving across that website seem to trigger that problem. Also , it does not happen every single time but often enough to be frustrating... Has anyone experienced this ?

it was working perfectly fine just a few days ago with the latest turbo boost drivers: 8.15.10.2302 suddenly, i don't know what happened (the last thing i did was change the font dpi settings) but now, loading the os takes much longer and with those same drivers, the screen displays nothing but black even after reinstalling them in safe mode. i've resorted to using the older drivers: 7.15.10.1908 which actually work perfectly, but i'm very concerned about what may have caused this in the first place. one possible clue: when loading the os in safe mode, it actually hangs for about 20 seconds on a file that it also hung with when attempting to load the os from a hdd that then shortly died. could it be that this hdd is dying?

Answer:2730p displays nothing but black after loading vista, is loading os slowly

If that does not work it could be hd or other hardware problem

Hi,

My name is Debbie.

If you run the Hardware Diagnostics you might be able to find the cause of this continuous Slow Hard drive issues.
Further I would suggest you to run scan of good Antivirus and spyware which might be able to pick some infections from your system. Try to disable some start up items by going into MSCONFIG.

For further assistance please reply

I'm having a bizarre problem on my Windows 10 PC.

For some reason, lots of image thumbnails won't load (particularly PNG files and AVI files), which is extremely frustrating. Sometimes it shows the file type icon, sometimes a generic file icon, and something literally nothing at all.

In addition, if I right click on an image file, and choose "Open with...", explorer freezes and I have to restart it in Task Manager.

Also, Control Panel\Programs\Default Programs\Set Associations perpetually loads for me and I can't set it.

I reset my PC about a week ago, I've tried this solution, I've done check disk and repair disk, and I can't seem to find a solution.

I use thumbnails while I work constantly, so this is a huge detriment to my productivity.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

My firefox inexplicably stopped working properly recently. There are certain webpages that fail to load whatsoever (espn.com, for instance), and there are other webpages that load extremely slowly (somethingawful.com, for instance). Both of these websites work fine on IE.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled firefox but that didn't cure the situation. I have Symantec antivirus and it is always running. I don't usually download any sort of file that should put my computer in jeopardy, but I cannot figure out why it's running so poorly recently.

I hope I'm attaching all of the correct files:

Oh, also, file attachments don't work in Firefox or IE.

Okay, here I am again. I've already posted regarding this problem, but I thought I had it fixed when I restored my computer to factory settings. No such luck, the problem has returned. This time I will be more specific about what is going on. I can not access any microsoft web pages, I can not update, I can't access my hotmail account, can't use messenger (kids are going crazy without it). I have had norton installed and ran a scan, no problems detected. Now i uninstalled it. Please let me know what to do now. I personally think it has something to do with Messenger not being compatible with Vista, so for now I've uninstalled Messenger also. What are some good free virus and spyware programs that I can run? Here is my current Hijack log.

For some reason my computer don't want to show online applets. I've tried both IE9 and Firefox 14.0.1 but this seems to be a JRE issue as both browsers show the same bahavior. I've tested both class-files and jar-files.

I've googled for any explanation or workaround but I haven't found any. I have no ActiveX filtering on and I can easily download any applet file by writing its URL in the browsers address field. I've even confirmed that the file isn't corrupt when it arrives.
It looks like the java plugin tries to download the file but never get a reply. So it times out and tries to load it again. During this time the typical loading-java-applet-logo shows. But after a few minutes the process stops and the applet area is left blank (white) or with a simple error symbol.
The Java console shows mainly the connecting attempts and ClassNotFoundException for the class requested in the HTML tag.
I've tested <applet>, <object> and <embed> tags. I've tried both sticky and non sticky declarations. With or without Java cache. All with the same result.
However, in few cases I have had an applet loaded and run, after loooong wait. This is why I think it is a network problem.

I've also noticed that others have asked about the same problem. But there has been no solution or explanation.

Answer:Problems loading applets in browsers. Loading is very slow.

OMG!!

I have created another link regarding this issue, however this problem is now on my second computer...

http://forums.techguy.org/windows-vista/725602-vista-won-t-load-blue.html

I just connected my iPod Nano (3rd Generation) to my second computer to charge up and then it completey shut down and now shows the error:

Error loading OS
<windows root>system32\hal.dll
Please reinstall a copy of the above file.

I have tried to repair the required, but it wont even read or load my XP Pro installation disk to repair it.

This is extremely frustrating, as I am now thinking that my iPod has a virus in it and has transferred it from my laptop through to my other PC~!

I'm starting doubt now whether, I need to purchase a new hard drive for either machines?

I am running Windows XP Professional on my other computer that is now affected.

Any suggestions???

Answer:Solved: A continuos problem with loading OS, repairing from CD or loading from CD.

Hello. I have been having some recurring problems while web browsing. IE/Firefox become unresponsive a lot. When clicking on different web pages, for a few seconds between pages, images and graphics from pages viewed many pages ago will pop up and disappear. This usually is accompanied by the browers becoming unresponsive. Also, just lately youtube videos either will not load at all or will be extrememly choppy because the download will hang. I have run quick and full scans with Microsoft Security Essentials and nothing has been detected. Here are the logs instructed to post. I have Windows Vista 64 bit so I did not include that last log. Thank you.

I found this example of the CSS for a background image
background-image:url('paper.gif');
Your css says
background:url(../images/bg-1.jpg)
Try changing 'background' to 'background-image' and putting '' inside the brackets for the file name.

Hey guys, for the past 2 days everything I have loaded ranging from Youtube Videos/ Normal Google webpages/ buffering twitch streams has being going really slow or just not loaded at all, before these 2 days everything would load pretty fast and I would not see any problems whatsoever. If i searched for something on Google now and clicked on a link I would most likely see a blank white screen forever more until I clicked refresh to see it load instantly, sometimes if I left it it would come up saying 'This Webpage is not available'. Furthermore with YouTube videos I cannot buffer videos as quick as I once could, It would either come up with a black screen or crash 1/10 of the way through the video, also for Twitch.tv I can barely even watch streams now as It will just be a grey screen with 'loading video' at the bottum just for it to come up and say 'failed to load video', dont get me wrong, sometimes I will be able to perfectly load a video on YouTube/twitch but for these last 2 days that is a rarity. I have noticed that it is sometimes to do with what I have previously clicked on, for example if I clicked on a youtube video/webpage before It will load fine, sometimes not but you get the draft (I know this is to do with cookies but before these 2 days I didn't have any problems loading webpages or buffering YouTube videos on 720p, now I would start on 360p and if I changed that to 720p it will probably not buffer fast enough)

In short I ju... Read more

Whenever I turn on my laptop, it takes forever to load. Also, when I load it up, two processes pop up on the taskbar for a few seconds, and say something like "Loading..." or something similar. One of them, I believe, is mcplauncher.exe, which is some sort of Adobe Reader thing, but I have no idea what the other is, because it never says what they are.

Hi Guys,
I have recently been encountering an unusual problem. When I exit a program, start a new program from the desktop, or even boot up my pc, I am sometimes left with the loading icon replacing my mouse. When this happens, I cannot right or left click, or click anything on the desktop at all. I have to go to the start menu to access a program and when I scroll over this new program the loading icon goes back to the regular mouse, but the desktop is still unusable. I have checked my processes and nothing is using any CPU, I have scanned my computer with malwarebytes and it is clean. Here is my HiJackthis log. Any help for this problem would be much appreciated guys. Thanks in advance. Cheers!

Hello,

Try a system files check first, as that is the easiest. Open a command prompt as administrator, and enter sfc /scannow.

Can you put a date on when the problem first started happening? If the SFC doesn't help, try a system restore to before that date.

Finally, if the first two suggestions don't work, do a repair install.

Hello, I hope someone can help me with my problem.

What's really annoying is that web pages aren't always loading fully and properly. Often images will be in the wrong place, will be of the wrong size, or will not load at all. This especially seems to affect the Google and BBC websites - but that may simply be because I frequent those sites. Sometimes when I click links it takes me to random images from the preceding page... all sort of weird things! It generally affects sites I've visited in the past, but isn't affecting this forum, maybe because this is my first time here?

I have run the latest versions of AVG 7.5, Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware. I use IE7 and Firefox 2.0, but have tried reverting to the previous versions to see if this fixes the problem, which it does not. I have also deleted all cached files, updated my Windows fully and have run both the TrendMicro and Kaspersky online scans. I have no idea what to do. Any help would be MUCH appreciated!

Hello,

I use windows XP, running through my school's network. Within the past few days, i've noticed my computer to be running a LOT slower then it usually is. I also sometimes get a random window popup, however it never loads, so its just a blank white window that pops up. Also sometimes my internet pages aren't loading at all, or may load once, but stop working after that first time, such as facebook. i can get logged in. but if i try to do anything else it'll freeze and not load anything else, using IE

I have spyware blaster and SB SND. when i ran SND it found a lot of stuff and supposedly fixed it. I had adaware, but it recently will just show a crash report whenever i reboot my computer or try to start it, so i uninstalled it. I was wondering if my HJT log shows anything that might be causing these problems?

Thanks

Quick rundown (i know my system inside and out, and currently i have no add-ons installed, only processes running are normal ones (even unnecessary ones like help and support, error reporting, antivirus, etc. are not started).

Firefox will not load pages correctly. This occurred suddenly, but its only on specific pages.

Testing shows that its not a spyware/similar infection, (scanned both AV, spybot, spy sweeper and adaware), used HiJack this, checked EVERYTHING just to make sure..

I load CNN.com in IE. Loads fine. Here's what i get in firefox:

http://i37.tinypic.com/ab09dj.jpg

then, on sites like myspace the real-time updates (new mail notifications on your home screen, status updates) just won't even load at all.

i've heard of some users having issues with firefox after upgrading to 3....but with a clean system, no addons or other software interfering and IE working fine (and most other sites in firefox) im thinking this is a bug in the software.

i DID have NoScript installed but it was disabled and i uninstalled. just to be sure, i uninstalled/reinstalled firefox. nothing.

anyone else know of a way to fix this? i updated flash and java also..

Note: PG2 is not blocking HTTP, and was running fine with CNN yesterday.. and there are no logged blocks..

Hello.

So I was playing a MMO game called Wizard101, when randomly, I disconnected from it.
I tried first to re-connect to the game, no success.

So I tried going to its website, loads very slowly, sometimes not loading at all.
Then I wanted to try go to its fansite, to ask for support there, but it turns out that the fansite isn't loading too.
I try to load a few more pages that is related to the game, but none of them will load.
However everything else seems to load just like normal.

I try to fix this with using my usuall fixes:
I tried connecting to the websites on another computer. Didn't work.
Restarted my internet + reset my router back to standard. Neither did this work.

I haven't changed any of my internet settings in a few months; so I doubt anything there would be the problem.

thanks for all help!~~

Answer:Websites about a game are loading slow, or not loading at all

If other websites are fine, then the most likely issue is that the website and server may be down. Nothing you can do about that.

Here are my current specs:

CPU - 2.6Ghz Intel Celeron

RAM - 1gb PC3200 DDR

Motherboard - Not sure but it came with the PC and only has 2 RAM slots which can hold up to 1gb in total.

Here is what I am upgrading to:

CPU - http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/93109

RAM - I have two 512mb sticks & two 256mb sticks of DDR RAM so when I buy the motherboard (shown below) I'll have 1.5gb in total

Motherboard - http://www.redstore.com/fx/prc_gen.php?genre=PC&cat=MOT&subcat=mot&subcat2=lga775 (it is the ASROCK Mobo, 4th one down)

Answer:How Do These Upgrades Look?

It will be an improvement. What's your budget? Also, take caution when mixing sticks of ram. On some motherboards, especially lower priced ones, they don't like it when you have different types or sizes of ram. There might be some compatibility issues there.

Also is there anything else that I should take into account? I am an avid software engineer but am not that involved with hardware so I am lookng for a second opinion for security. Thanks,Ben

Question: XP & Upgrades.....

I posted this on the wrong board......here is the link to see what was said already...

http://forums.techguy.org/showthread.php?s=&postid=1256691#post1256691

I did a XP Update and I had it install EVERYTHING (I guess I wanted to be safe than sorry) but now I want to get rid what I don't need.....so should I delete all that was installed & do the update again?

Thanks for help!
Rob

Answer:XP & Upgrades.....

As only you know what you need, then its a hard call to say what you should keep.

If the PC runs fine, why not keep all updates?

As an example, you may not use Media Player. However what would you gain by removing the updates?

If the updates were installed from the MD Update site interactively (and not downloaded in bulk from Windows Update Catalog) then only the appropriate ones should have been installed anyway.

Perhaps it not clear what you are intending to do, or why?

Question: PC Upgrades

Hi everyone,

I've had my current pc for about 18 Months, and am thinking of upgrading. Here're the details of my current PC:

CPU: i5 2500k
RAM: 8GB 1600mhz DDR3 Corsair Vengeance
Graphics card: Asus GTX 560ti
Motherboard: Asus P8Z68 v-pro GEN3
Power supply: Corsair 850HX Pro Series
Case: Antec 902v3
SSD: Crucial M4 (128GB)
Extra hard drive: Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB
DVD: 2 x Sony DVD RW

Monitor: Samsung SyncMaster BX2250 (21.5", 1080p screen, 2ms response time)
Monitor 2: Samsung 22" tv (21.5" 1080p screen)
Mouse: Logitech Performance MX
Keyboard: Logitech K350

As far as I can see and know, keyboard, mouse, screens, DVD drive, case power supply and hard drives don't really have an upgrade path, but I'd be grateful for feedback if you disagree?

As for CPU, graphics card and motherboard & RAM... I'd be really welcome on a good upgrade path. Not really got a budget in mind, but nothing over 1000. I was thinking a Haswell i7, but didn't know if it would be better to wait for the Haswell E (X99) next year and a matching motherboard (again, ideas welcome).

As for graphics card I was thinking a GTX 770, but didn't know whether Gigabyte Asus would be a better bet and whether to go with a 2GB or 4GB version?

Thanks in advance!

My question is, are these Good buys and if not, can you direct me to better ones?

Answer:How are these Upgrades?

the ram you mentioned you already have is that 2x256mb as well. if it is only one dimm i would just get another of the same and run dual channel if you can. as for the hdd i have always like WD over seagate, so my suggestion would be a caviar se.

Question: Upgrades

Hey! I know a little bit more than your average user, but I came to this forum to learn more about computers, and my first question is upgrading my laptop. I have my specs below and I was curious if anyone has any recommendations? I plan on using this laptop for 3+ years. Thanks!

You could always throw a SSD drive in there if you have money to burn. What do you know about your optical drive? Is it Blu-ray?

Hello, i have a Lenovo Z40-70 and i want to upgrade it at least the ram, but i heard that are some laptos that support GPU upgrades too... so i want to know what is the maximum ram that i could insert in my laptop and if there is a method so i can change my gpu, that is a nvidia geforce 820M for a up to date one like a 9M series or even a gtx series, but i think that isn't posible)  Anyway thanks for the help. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Additional Info:I'm a little troubled too cause i didn't understand very well the difference between the integrated graphics card and the gpu, i was researching and i found that i got an intel hd graphics family as integrated card and a nvidia geforce 820M as gpu, i found too that the nvidia one is on a PCI-E 2.0 x9 @x4 1.1 port  if that helps you guys. thanks again c:

Hi guys I've been coming here for awhile now and it's always a great help and super friendly community so hope you can all help me figure this one out. I'm trying to upgrade my dads computer for him the mounting bracket for the heat sink snapped off so I need to get him a new bracket maybe even a new heat sink not sure, thermal paste and a power supply. I'm giving him my old video card since I just recently upgraded mine. He just does a lot of photo editing so I figure my old card which is still good couldn't really hurt. I usually shop at tigerdirect.com so parts from there would be appreciated. I'm good with putting computers together but getting the correct parts is what I still have trouble with.

His system model is a gateway DX4300 processor is an AMD phenom 9700 quad-core 2.4ghz so its older but still does what he needs it for fine. I just need a new heat sink or just the mounting bracket (if that's possible) and a 450-watt psu plus thermal paste. I don't know what board that computer has so not too sure what connectors for it hence my psu problem. I'll be putting in a Radeon hd5770 for him so that has to get power from the psu as well.

Thanks

Answer:need some help on getting the right upgrades

Heat sinks generally do come with the mounting bracket, the part that attaches underneath the board. The thermal paste usually does not come with it, but it might in some cases. Most power supplies these days will have connectors to fit just about any configuration of motherboard connections. They are typically listed in the product description. It's probably a standard physical size power supply.

Hey,
Sorry my first post has to be a question and I would like to say that I have browsed TSG many times before and it has helped me a lot!

Anyway, basically I am going to be upgrading my laptop and when looking on ebuyer I just thought to myself, "Will my laptop actually support these?".

So my question is will my laptop support:

4gb RAM
Faster Intel Pentium Dual Core

I currently have a HP G7015EA Notebook PC running Windows Vista x64 Ultimate, I have looked on the HP website and cannot find any information on the maximum amount of RAM my laptop can support.

For the second point, I currently have a "Intel(R) Pentium(R) Dual CPU T2310 @ 1.46GHz" (Taken from dxdiag). Is there any change of upgrading the CPU aswell?

Here is a link to my DxDiag file if it helps:

All help is appreciated, thanks guys!

Question: more upgrades

time for some more upgrades!!monitergpupsuhddcpu cooler (hsf)and my budget is $600 a little more if it must be and i am buying the things on black friday if there are any good dealsfor my moniter i was thinking a 22" or 24" but 24" are bigger, and look a lot betterfor my gpu i have a xfire board so i most likly wanna go with ati but i dont know if it would be better to get like a gtx 260 core 216 or something like that also this decision depends on the moniter (just thinking ati right now for this calculation) 24" moniter i would have to get 4850 22" moniter i could get a 4870 but idkfor my psu i was thinking a crosair 750 watt for possible later upgrades (like going xfire)for my hard drive i was thinking something 500gb mabye depends on the deals on black fridayfor my hsf i have no idea mabe a tt? or a zalman? i think i need to look at some benchmarkswhat do you guys think?

Answer:more upgrades

I'd get a HD4850, great bang for your buck.  Anything better than that will cost a lot more, and IMO the performance isn't justified.  If you've got the cash though, you might think differently.PSU - Corsair's PSUs are good quality, also OCZ, Thermaltake Toughpower, Antec, and PC Power & Cooling spring to mind.  See what deals you can get, a 700W should do you fine unless you plan on going way over the top, with, I don't know, 20 HDDs, a massively overclocked quad core, 16GB of RAM, and two 4870X2s in Crossfire.  People often hugely overestimate their PSU requirements.Hard drive - there's a lot of good 500GB drives out there, see what you can find.Heatsink - what's wrong with your current one?  What do you want to gain from a new unit?

You have a laptop. Pretty much, you are limited to upgrading the RAM and the hard drive. (On some, you can also upgrade the wireless network card.) The processor is soldered onto the motherboard.

What upgrades should I get for my current rig?

I kinda don't want to spend way to much on upgrading it as I'll be building a new one fairly soon, but I just want to get this one upgraded fully first.

Answer:What upgrades should I get?

well looking at your rig there isnt anything that stands out as needing to be upgraded....

you could sell the 8400 & grab a quad, but if you cant OC the quad to the same as the dual, you'll actually loose performance..

or you could sell the GTX260 & grab a 295 or 275, but your PSU may need addressing then.

so.....i'd move onto the next rig mate, that one is a ''finished product''

Question: Upgrades

Because I rencently found I cannot overclock my intel processer, i want to go AMD. i wanted to have some advice on mobos and processors.

Answer:Upgrades

Right now, your best bet for overclocking is to get a XP1600+ from www.newegg.com and a KT333 motherboard, preferably an Asus A7V333, Abit KX7-333 or Epox 8K3A as they all have the 1/5 dividers and will allow you much higher FSB speeds if you're able to unlock your cpu to lower your multiplier. I've seen some XP1600+ cpus hit up to 2.0Ghz w/ very good cooling.

Question: Upgrades?

Hey all,

Christmas is not that far away and was thinking if there was anything I could upgrade in my computer system. I know for one thing I want a new case. I've been looking at a few and any more suggestions to that would be appreciated.

My current system:
AMD Athlon 64 Dual Core Processor 5600+ @ 2.9Ghz
6GB Ram
2x 500GB Hard Drives
Nvidia GeForce 9400GT with 1GB
Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.
PSU: 450W

Any ideas/suggestions or whatever else will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Answer:Upgrades?

If you do a lot of PC gaming (new games) I would suggest a new video card. Something like a 9800GT or higher.

If you don't do gaming then save your Christmas wishes for something else because you already have a nice PC and there's not much sense wasting them on computer parts.

My current pc is a custom build and was done in 2002.(old i know)
It has a dial up modem and a video card that has one moniter output.

We have dsl at home and 51 inch flat screen tv is on the way.

I want to upgrade the video card and the modem to fit my current needs.

I THINK my video card is a AGP type.I found a website that had pictures of 3 different bus types and mine looks just like the one for AGP.

What do i need to know before shopping for a new video card. I have read that video cards have a speed, and that i should replace my video card with one that has the same speed. I really want to be able to connect my flat screen tv to the computer and use the tv as the monitor via s-video cable.

Also, my modem needs to accept the dsl line.( to me it looks like a giant telephone connection). What kind of modem do i need?

Hi allThis is my first post, just wanna say thanks in advance to any help anyone can offer, it is appreciated. I'm looking to upgrade my PC, add a new graphics card, maybe some more RAM - basically looking to make it run faster, mainly for playing games, using photo software, internet and multi-tasking. I'm a bit of a PC dunce but have added a few components over the years so am happy to do the install myself...price-wise I'm looking to spend about 100-150, maybe a little more. What things should I get? I know that sounds a little vague but I'll copy the current PC specs below, and basically I'm just looking for a fast, smooth machine, and not altogether too sure where to begin! The computer isn't too bad, but I'm sure it could be faster and does tend to hang up a bit sometimes. I also added a new hard-drive recently, going for a WD from a Seagate, and I've noticed the computer now runs slighlty slower...is this normal or have I done something wrong in the installation? Anyway, here's the specs - System Summary >>> > Mainboard : Unspecified RS/RX482SB400 > Chipset : ATI RS482 > Processor : AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ @ 2000 MHz > Physical Memory : 1024 MB (2 x 512 DDR-SDRAM ) > Video Card : Radeon X1300 Series > Hard Disk : WDC (320 GB) > DVD-Rom Drive : SONY DVD RW DRU-190A > DVD-Rom Drive : HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR8164B > Monitor Type : GNR MONITOR - 17 inches > Network Card : Realtek Semiconductor RT8139 (A/B/C/810x/813x/C+) Fast Ethernet Adapter > Operating System : Microsoft... Question: XP and upgrades

Been having a lot of lock ups on the computer in my secretary's office. Also, sometimes the computer doesn't recognize the new printer we installed to it. I'm thinking an upgrade in OS from '98 and adding more memory.

However, if this does not get us up to speed and if we just want to upgrade the MOBO or HDD later, rather than buy a new computer, would we have to buy a new COA for XP at the time of the upgrade?

Also, would reformatting with XP be a problem?

Thanks in advance.

another thing is my sound is built onto my mother board and XP is saying that i have no sound devices installed, but if i boot-up in 98 the sound plays just fine.
any help is appriciated.

Hi guys

Have a friend with a Dell computer who is wanting to speed it up a little. It's got 2 slots, both have 256mb RAM in each of them currently so yea - stuff all RAM.

I don't know much at all about RAM so by the following pics is anyone able to tell me what RAM I'd be able to get for them to increase the speed? There are 2 types or RAM right? (Or wrong probably)

Looking at getting 1GB in each of the 2 slots for 2GB total RAM. Should work nicely. Processor is 3ghz. Below is also some more info on the machine from Belarc.

Answer:CPU Upgrades

I was checking in my files for you..... 1/7/10 is the boot block date of the "revision 1" motherboard.  So, you have the original motherboard rather than the updated one.  If you want to do the project it is not too bad to swap in one of the more recent motherboards.  SSD will get you the most bang for the buck in terms of speed boost.  I think the Z600 is still a SATA Gen II motherboard (check on that... my recollection is that the use of SATA Gen III drives started with the Z620, and there may be issues if you try SATA Gen III drives in a SATA Gen II workstation according to HP).  Assuming it is a SATA Gen II workstation then my favorite for that is the Intel 320 series 300GB version.  You can find those new on eBay for a very reasonable cost.  I have also bought them used off eBay and almost always the life left reported by the excellent Intel "Toolbox" software is 100%.  That same software allows you to update the SSDs firmware very easily, if needed.

Hi guys,

I just bought my wife a new laptop for her studies so she will stay awy from the desktop (not exactly how it happened, but same outcome ).

Sooooooo........I feel I am fully justified in upgrading this creaky old desktop I am on just now.

I bought it from dell a few years ago now, and all I've done is bought a new case (as the dell one that I had was very thin and couldn't fit a new power supply that was easily available), mounted everything in the new case with a new power supply and upgraded my old graphics card to a new-ish ATI Radeon 5700, which does the trick just about.

This is what I am running (and please let me know if more info is needed in order to help me!):
Intel Core 2 Duo E4500 @ 2.20 Ghz
ATI Radeon HD 5700
Dell Motherboard (Intel G33/G31/P35 Express Chipset)
3 GB of RAM
Windows XP

I am wanting to upgrade to make everything faster (I don't play many graphics intense games these days, but would like to get back into it).

I am thinking that my processor definately needs a boost, and maybe a little more RAM too, although I'm unsure if this means I need to upgrade my Motherboard too, and if so, what I should get.

I am pretty keen to learn how to build, maintain and upgrade my system by myself, and any input at all would be awesome!

Thanks in advace!

Bezza

Answer:Need help with some upgrades.

That Dell Inspiron 530S is less than 3 years old and isn't a "creaky old desktop" by any means.

If it's using the 32-bit version of Windows XP, it's not going to recognize and use more than 3 GB of RAM - which it already has.

If it's using the 64-bit version of Windows XP, you can increase the RAM to its maximum supported amount of 4 GB.

By the time you buy and upgrade all the components that you're considering, you'd be better off buying a new desktop.

I'm not a hardware expert, so I'll pass to someone else who may have some better advice for you.

I want to switch over to i5 motherboard and processors but that would involve me changing most of my hardware. What should I do? keep my current lga775 and get a good quad or something and have it for a year? I need some guiding people!

Question: SSD upgrades

Looking to see what consensus is on an SSD upgrade to HP ultrabook. I thought I would try the following; 1. swap out HDD for new Samsung EVO2. Swap of 2GB ram chip for 4 GB ram chip for total of 8GB3. Then upgrade to win10. Biggest concern I have is whether to leave or remove the 32GB mSSD drive?  My goal, given the age of the laptop, is speed, or as much as I can get before breaking out the wallet. thoughts?  My understanding is going with 1 and only one SSD would be faster than the relatively older and slower cache drive writing to the SSD. thanks for your comments.

I have been notified that I will be upgraded to 1MB with Pipex in July. At the moment I am on 512kb, unlimited for 23.44. Have just seen on their website that I can go upto 2mb with a 5GB limit per month for the same price. I have no idea how much I download each month as the kids use the computer as well and they are into their music sites as are most kids. Would welcome a bit of advice because I think the suggested upgrade with 5GB limit looks the better option.

You can upgrade the processor but not easily - the mobo will have a limit as to what it can support. What will you do with the machine? Another 256mb RAM will make a difference as will a good graphics card if you are into gaming.

Question: R51 Upgrades

Is there a way to upgrade the video card on the Thinkpad R51 laptop?  My laptop model is: 1830-Y3R which comes with a 32 MB ATI 7500 Card.  I'd like to see if I can upgrade this to 128 MB or 256.  I've already upgraded the RAM to 2GB.I ordered a WD 160 GB 9.5 mm 2.5 in PATA/IDE ATA-6 hard drive. Also, has anyone ever switched the system board in an R51 to a system board from a different system (possible R51)?

Answer:R51 Upgrades

Welcome to the forum! You can't switch/upgrade the video card, since it's soldered to the motherboard. However, you can install the upgraded board from a R50p (or T41p/T42p, same thing) which has 128 MB VRAM. Hope this helps.

hi there!just finished upgrading my R60-replaced the 80GB HDD with a fairly speedy WD Blue Scorpio 320GB and replaced the 2X512MB RAM with 2+1GB Kingston modules.  The only way I could make the hdd to work was to put a jumper on the first two pins of the drive (counting from the SATA data connector) and therefore get the drive in the RPS mode (Reduced Power Spinup). The drive works well in both Compatibility and AHCI modes, with the latter being about half MB/s faster in both reading and writing. The HDD upgrade was, by far, the best investment I've made. For some reason, the 80GB Fujitsu drive that the notebook was shipped with was painfully slow. It was taking me about 25 minutes to boot! Some speed tests I ran were showing that the drive was very slow while reading and writing, with speeds under 30MB/s, sometimes in low 20MB/s. Some might suspect my drive was full but no, only 25GB of the 80 were used. The system would freeze for minutes while opening Lotus Notes or Firefox. Not sure it was a faulty drive or not, fact is I just couldn't live with this lappie as it was. I simply cloned the old drive on the new one and presto! the computer was as it should have been from the start. This rules out a software issue with the old drive since nothing changed there.ATTO Speed Test with the Scorpio reaches 60 MB/s for both reading and writing and to be honest, I'm pretty pleased with that. The HD Tach average read speed is 51.6 MB/s.Compare this speed with the o... Read more

Question: OS upgrades

I just realized this, ipads have free OS updates. If you buy a 500 dollar ipad, you're guaranteed at least a couple of free new OS upgrades.

Windows 8 doesn't.

This could be an issue for Microsoft in the tablet front, especially the WinRT tablets. If one buys a 4 or 500 dollar WinRT tablet, they aren't guaranteed Windows 9. They will be if they pay for it. And if one does, that tacked on at least 100 dollars to the cost of probably a tech degraded WinRT tablet.

Probably not good...

Answer:OS upgrades

Apple has charged of iOS updates in the past. There is no guarantee that they will continue to keep offering it for free. We shall just have to see.

Question: upgrades and XP

i am wanting to upgrade my PC by quite a bit, the main thing holding me back from doing it is the fact that i have windows and all my programs installed just the way i want them, and really dont want to have to do it all over again. i know that little changes wont effect the windows install (Video card, ram, drives, ect...) but just how far can you go with upgrades before you need to re-install everything? or does xp have the capability to just detect the changes and roll with the punches so to speak? i know i can do the little stuff, if nothing else just do them one at a time and boot the PC after each one to avoid any complications. but what happens if i want to upgrace the mobo and CPU? can i just connect my current hard drives to the new mobo and go from there?

Answer:upgrades and XP

Most upgrades as far as hardware on an XP machine go fairly unobtrusively. Usually I'ld put it like this -

0 being no effect 10 being high effect -
Power Supply upgrade - 0
Memory upgrade - 0
CD-Rom upgrade - 1
HDD upgrade - 1 (does recognize any HDD but does have to install new drivers for it, ghosting works just fine if your making it a removal of 1 and a intall of another)
New PCI cards - 2-4 depending on card, system resources and whatnot.
New MB/CPU - 4-10 (some you can just put on top of an existing build and just replace a ton of drivers others won't boot at all.)

basically your wanting to do the hardest upgrade of them all and really its a total "crap shoot", pardon the expression, as to what your system will do.

I would say if your going to attempt this make sure to do a total backup and do it being prepared to lose all data and if you don't then GREAT!

All it takes is 1 driver the new MB requires that conflicts with one little part of a driver the old MB had and its "game over" and you have to do a full wipe and install from scratch.

Answer:PC Upgrades

Raidmax is not a recommended pw supply for gaming systems. Good ie recommended units; corsair [ax, hx or rm models ONLY] seasonic, FSP [only units with the 5yr warranty or antec [only the HCG models]
Your pw supply carries a 2yr warranty. A quality unit comes with at least a 5yr warranty. That alone should tell you about the quality of raidmax.

To answer your question, no I would not use that pw supply with either a single gtx970 or two of them.

Question: S12 VIA Upgrades

Hello.  I have an S12 (VIA Chipset), and I was wondering about some possible upgrades for it.  I am trying to squeeze every last bit of power and performance from this machine.  Not so much to make it powerful, but as to make it fast/quick.  Just want some advise on if any of this is possible. 1.  Bluetooth.  I know the S10 could easily have a bluetooth module installed and I was wondering if it was the same way for the S12. 2.  RAM.  I have maxed out my RAM (3GB) but was wondering about the RAM soldered onto the mother board.  I know it is running at 667mhz, which slows down my 2GB stick to that speed (it's 800mhz).  Could I send the computer in to Lenovo and ask them to replace that soldered on stick with one that runs at 800mhz? 3.  Turbo Memory.  I have read that there is an empty Mini PCIe slot on the mother board.  Could a "stick" of Intel Turbo memory be successully installed in this slot?  Or does the VIA chipset prevent this. 4.  HDD.  I have considered upgrading to a SSD, but I will soon be dual booting windows 7 Ultimate and Windows XP, and the SSD's with large enough capacities for this are too expensive right now.  The S12's standard HDD is 5400rpm (I think), but would a 7200RPM hard drive help much?  I doNOT want to sacrafice significant battery life for this particular uprgare however, so if 7200RPM drives suck too much juice, then what is a better... Answer:S12 VIA Upgrades

Hi try to answer a few of your quests...1. BT there is no manual to explore the S12... but a good help is this how to get inside...S12 HDD Upgrade but be aware ...you definitely lose your warranty ...2. Thats mission impossible memory soldered onboard ....means soldered ... not socket based...3. One free minicpi-express slot ... ok ...dont know if it works ... but even when ... you have 3 GB memory ...turbo memory works only for Vista ... and its a waste of money... nothing will speeds up ...4. 7200rpm HDD will only transfer data faster...higher battery consumption eats overall 5-10 minutes... so no fear about that..    loose against SSD but they are more expensive 10-20 times  per GB... 160 GB SSD costs equal the whole S12  .... bad ratio ... could be better next year but didnt have a magic glass sphere 5. No graphics acceleration ..6. Question: S10-2 Upgrades

I have just ordered a s10-2 and want to upgrade the Memory and Hard Drive when I get it.  I have been searching on here for answers, but I am still a bit confused. Firstly what is the maximum size hard drive a can install? I found one post whaich says 320GB, one which say 500GB and one which says it's unlimited.  Does it take the 12.5mm thick 2.5" 750GB and 1TB drives or just standard 2.5" drives? How is the memory configured?  Is it 1GB soldered and I just need to add a 1GB chip or is it a 1GB chip which I need to replace with 2GB chip? Thanks in advance Oh, and whats the best way to go about installing XP on the new hard drive?

Answer:S10-2 Upgrades

Hi you are welcome...you can upgrade normal 2,5" 9.5mm Sata-HDD/SSD max. 500GB. (actual max. size). (when in future more GB on this size fit who cares.... ) Definitely 12.5mm thick platters will not fit...  you can upgrade to max 2 GB (due Intel Chipset limitations)depends on Model if 1GB is soldered.. Best is to look inside what up... 1 GB S0-Dimm DDR-2 667-800Mhz will fit...if 1 GB is in the Socket /flip to upgrade Modul with 2 GB Mem.. For change HDD i prefer this Backup or Clone the drive (needs USB-Case) sincerely KalvinKlein  -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Want more ? Answer:What gpu and ram upgrades can I use

The gpu upgrade is not really possible. The video chip is soldered to the motherboard and not removeable or replaceable or upgradeable. Here is the Manual: Manual You have 12 gigs of DDR4-2133 SO-DIMM RAM or an 8 gig and a 4 gig and the max would be 2 x 8 = 16. 12 gig to 16 gig upgrade will have no effect on gaming performance and very little on overall performance.  Your huge performance upgrade would be a solid state drive...the 5400 rpm mechanical "spinner" hard drive is the system bottleneck but SSDs again have almost zero impact on gaming fps. Post back with any more questions.  If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

I am still using KIS 07, but I get the impression that it would be okay to upgrade it to 09 - am I correct in thinking that? Sorry to be so dense, but I'm not really quite certain how to proceed and don't want to mess it up.

The license is not due for renewal until the end of June. So, should I just make a note of the installed key code and then re-enter it or..... ?

A bit of guidance would be awfully welcome please.

For some reason I cannot turn on automatic upgrades for windows xp Is there some virus that prevents this or am I just forgetting something

Answer:upgrades

When did this start happening? What sort of errors are you getting?
What SP do you have installed?
Microsoft stopped support for SP2 so if that's what you have, you need to download SP3 and install it before trying to run any other updates.
