WIndows Spotlight not working on Windows StartUp

Question: WIndows Spotlight not working on Windows StartUp

After two latest Windows Cumulative updates 15063.632 and 15064.674 the option Windows Spotlight of changing Background pictures stopped working since the only Background picture we can see is the one of a beach and a cave. Before updates, changing Backgrounds pictures on Windows StartUp was working good as Windows Spotlight did it with changing Background Pictures in certain intervals.

Could someone confirm that is true or to educate us how to make Windows Spotlight option for changing of Background pictures start working again on Windows StartUp and not only to have cave and beach one.

Thank you.

Preferred Solution: WIndows Spotlight not working on Windows StartUp

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: WIndows Spotlight not working on Windows StartUp

Not sure if this is quite what you mean... by Windows Startup - but this is what is observed:

If you restart your PC
or
if you do a cold boot
then
you may well see a picture which is not a Spotlight picture. Note there's never an option to 'Like' the picture presented in these cases.

Whereas if you log off/on sleep/resume Lock/unlock you see Spotlight images.

I have 15063.674, and Spotlight is working.

Info:
Windows 10 Home
All updates installed
Windows Spotlight selected as lock screen
Yet still, there is no sign of the spotlight features working. Don't know if its related, but the 'preview' in the settings shows a 12 hr clock, like in my general time & date settings, yet my lock screen is constantly in 24 hr mode.
In the UK, Asus Vivobook s200.

Answer:Why isn't Windows Spotlight working?

I'm having problems with Windows Spotlight as well. I do have an image, but it never changes. (Surface 3, Window 10 Home)
Worse, it seems to have taken over the Lock Screen personalization settings. I can no longer change them. A number of others have written about this issue in the Microsoft Community forums.

Hi there,
i have win 10 Pro 64bit - last build - Ver. 1511 - 10586.3
For some reason Windows spotlight is not working for me - when i am in Settings -> Personalization ->
Lock Screen.

As shown in the Picture:

When i choose Windows spotlight - i see this light blue circle on the middle of the screen for 10 Sec

And then it goes to this same Background picture;

in the end - eventually Windows spotlight is not working - and yes i have same win 10 pro version at home installed- and over there Windows spotlight is working fine !

Answer:Windows spotlight NOT WORKING!

same here on PRO version

seems buggy lol

PS: Oh wait

I had some clue maybe but have to check it at home later on my comp

do you have Bing search as default browser or something else ? ( I have google search by default and it might be responsible of spotlight no showing ! )

One of the new features in the latest preview insider build is having the lockscreen show a new bing image every 24 hours along with fun facts, it is called windows spotlight and can be selected by going to settings>personalization>lock screen>background.

This feature isn't working for me, is it working for others?, does the computer ahve to be on 24/7 in order for the feature to kick in?

Hi there, tcman. I had a personal pic for mine and switched over to Spotlight in which it did change the pic. I shall see if it changes for tomorrow.

BTW, thanks for the info. I hadn't noticed this yet.

Does anyone know if there is a way to force Windows Spotlight to use a random image on each startup, as opposed to the default beach cave? I understand from other posts that since the user hasn't yet signed in at that point, it seems to default to that picture. However, using other 3rd party Win10 apps such as [Chameleon](https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/stor...n/9wzdncrfjb22) and other lock screen changers, I can confirm that they are able to change the lock screen picture on each startup (by doing it in the background while I'm using my pc, and then saving the changes I would assume). I would assume the "slideshow" lock screen option works in a similar manner. Why is Windows Spotlight unable to do this out of the box, considering if I choose to lock my pc Windows Spotlight shows a new image most of the time. However, at each startup it reverts to the beach photo. I rarely lock my pc, so it seems like a waste.

Is there some setting, Windows app, or registry hack I can use to get the functionality I am describing? I was thinking Windows would store all the Spotlight photos it downloads in a folder somewhere, so I could choose a lock screen "slideshow" of that hidden folder, but it seems there are logos and other files in that folder as well.

Answer:Windows Spotlight has default beach cave picture on every startup

Chameleon isn't a lock screen changer but a wallpaper changer for the desktop flavors. For Windows 7 some time back you would have gone with the Logon Screen app to change the start up screen when Windows was loading before the Welcome lock screen and onto the desktop. So far there hasn't been the rush to get 3rd party tweakers out for people in this area as you saw for XP first to be followed by Vista, 7, 8.

There is one option found immediately for change of the sign in screen however. How To Change Windows 10 Login Screen Background Image There's a warning on that one by someone in the comments however about that blocking the option to change the lockscreen background likely from changes in the system registry itself.

Fortunately however Ten Forums has the solution in hand! Review the guide for this instead of bothering with any 3rd party crapola! Lock Screen Background - Change in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums

I am currently up to date with all updates for my legal copy of windows 10 pro, I have choosen the windows spotlight feature for my lock screen, however it never activates, I still just get the microsoft glowing blue window screen, any thoughts?

also right below the options for lock screen are options to choose apps for detailed status and apps for quick status, I have also never seen these work anywhere, any help?

Answer:lock screen - windows spotlight option not working

I believe the Windows 10 sign in image must be disabled first, as I've never been able to get a customization to stick without disabling it

To disable the sign in image, open regedit (winkey + R, then regedit) and copy/paste the following into the nav bar:

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\System
Create new DWORD:
DisableLogonBackgroundImage
Set value data: 1
For spotlight, are you setting it simply to allow a custom lock screen image, or do you want to use the actual spotlight feature, which pulls images randomly from Bing depending on your preferences? If it's the latter, someone else will need to chime in as I've never wanted or used that.

However, if it's the former, and you're simply looking to utilize your own custom image for the lock screen:
Navigate to C:\Windows\Web\Screen and paste your custom image
Rename the pasted image to img100.1
You cannot simply replace one of the 6 default images, as SFC and certain updates will delete the file since it won't have parity with the WinSxS component store.I recommend renaming it img100.x, as that will ensure it's the first image shown in Settings - Personalization - Lock screen
In regards to showing app statuses on the lock screen:

If it's an app that shows internet content (Weather, News, Feeds, Facebook, etc), I've always had to open the app once on the desktop and allow it load in order for a firewall rule to be created. Once done, it should show content on the lockscreen. In regards to... Read more

Question: Windows Spotlight

Running 10.0.14393.
Ever since I upgraded to win 10 last year, when I turn on my PC ( Not sure what you call it, but I would call it a splash screen) I always got the same picture. I am talking about the screen that presents before you have to hit any key to get to password entry screen.
Like this;

Now I turn on PC, and I get different picture? I have not changed any settings?

The only setting that seems relevant is in Personalisation > Lockscreen. FWIW I have mine as 'Background = Windows Spotlight'.

Can you guys enlighten me? Has something changed?

Answer:Windows Spotlight

Hello

Take a look here Configure Windows Spotlight on the lock screen (Windows 10) | Microsoft Docs

Windows Spotlight is a feature included by default in Windows 10 that downloads pictures and advertisements automatically from Bing and displays them when the lock screen is being shown on a computer running Windows 10. Users are occasionally given an opportunity to mark whether they wish to see more or fewer images of a similar type, and sometimes the images are overlaid with links to advertisements.

I turned on "Windows Spotlight" in my Lockscreen settings (Personalization) for a while but then wanted to go back to selecting my own background image. I can select an image, but a few hours or a day later the windows spotlight images come back again. The selection in Lockscreen still says "Image", but the image has changed to a lockscreen one. If I again select my image, it only holds for a while, then reverts to a spotlight image.

Does anyone know a fix for this? If I could find the Windows Spotlight service or exe or task I would disable/delete it, but I can't find it.

Double check to make sure that you had turned off the Get fun facts, tips, and more on your lock screen setting for the Picture background. That setting will show Windows Mini-Spotlight.

I would think that it would show only on your selected picture, but it's worth looking at in case it may be changing it.

Normally I dont lock my PC as its in my room and nobody else uses it except for me. Every lock screen image has a phone variant. Sort images by name to see the images that belong together next to each other. Enjoy. I'll update when new ones pop up.
I began too late collecting them. If someone can help me dig up the old hidden backgrounds from previous builds I will add them to this collection. I'm having a weird issue with Windows Spotlight on several systems, and granted, this is hardly a major issue that's preventing me from using a computer.

Anyway, I have five different Windows 10 systems. Some are Pro, some are Home, however, they are all legit and activated.

One two of them, I use a domain account. Spotlight works perfectly, showing me new random wallpaper at the lock screen. The other three, I use my Microsoft account, and no matter what I try, Spotlight isn't working. I am able to verify that the wallpaper files are downloading and that it is set properly in Settings, but it fails to run on all three. Even if I wipe out the system and clean install Windows 10, I cannot get Spotlight to work. I've cleared the directory, changed Settings to disable then enable it, and still no luck. I've used a local account, and all was well until I add my Microsoft account.

So, is there a setting in my Microsoft account/sync that is preventing Spotlight to function?

Spotlight doesn't work on my laptop too, I get the same red airplane wing photo & no 'like what you see' message. I recently installed Windows on a new HD to test a few things & spotlight was one of them, it worked until I set a PIN for sign in then it stopped working, removing the PIN doesn't fix the problem.
I've been all over the internet looking for a fix but nothing which works.
If you have set a PIN on your laptop then this is the reason spotlight isn't working imo.

So far I have set Bing as default search engine, cleared out the folder where the spotlight photos are stored, changed the setting to picture then back to spotlight, I am now out of ideas.
TIA,

Answer:Why isn't my Windows 10 spotlight changing background?

The lock screen background image is not working properly on startup. I have the lock screen set to show the spotlight image. When it starts it uses the same image. If I click the Windows button and "L" to lock it it will show a spotlight image. my computer at work when I start up always shows a new image. How can I fix this? I have already done scans and deleted and replaced the images in the appdata/local/packages folder.

Answer:Lock screen is not changing spotlight image on startup

The lock screen image is generated differently when a PC restarts or cold boots. For example, you don't see the various legends including 'Like what you see'. It is possible you will see a different image.

It is not at all easy to fix matters related to this.

Hey guys,

I'm new here but i'm also on the Windows 7 and Windows 8 forums too.

Anyways, i got a new laptop and installed the Facebook app from the Windows Store and it asked me if i wanted to sync my Facebook profile picture and cover photo as the user photo and lock screen picture. I didn't mean to click yes as my cover photo at the time was a stupid one. I've tried uninstalling the Facebook app to make the lock screen picture go away and used the control panel to manually change back to Windows Spotlight. But it still does not change. Whenever i restart my laptop the stupid picture of Ainsley Harriot comes up before the logon screen, but when i lock my laptop it shows the Spotlight. It's weird. I'm new to Windows 10 so i'm unsure what the issue is here.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Atif

Answer:Lock Screen Does Not Change To Windows Spotlight.

Hi Atif,

Glad you are also joining the Ten Forums

Yes, I've noticed the old lock screen picture still shows up even though the Spotlight is selected and works for whenever the PC sleeps or is locked.

The way to change this is to go back to the Lock Screen settings and select Picture and change it to something other than the one you dislike. Then once the new picture is registered you can reselect Spotlight.

If one of the Spotlight pictures particularly appeals to you you can find it and then select it as a Picture by following the information in this tutorial:

Hi Everyone,
I was wondering if anyone has background information on the Windows 10 Spotlight pictures. Some of them seem to be digitally enhanced, but I want to know to which extent. Are they real pictures of actual places with some special effects, or just completely invented? If they are of real places, I want to know how to find out where they are...
Also, does anyone have any information on the artists who made these?
Thanks,
Nicole

Answer:Windows Spotlight Photos-real or no? who made them?

Others may be able to shed some info, I'm not entirely sure myself.
If you want to dig deeper, the images are usually located in this directory:

I love the Windows Spotlight dynamic wallpapers on the Windows lock screen. I would love to have the same feature for the desktop as well. I know I can collect pictures in a folder at set a background slideshow but I am too lazy for that I just want beautiful, random images on my desktop that auto-change every day or so. Is there any way to get the Windows spotlight feature on the desktop? is this something Microsoft will add in a future update?

Hello guys, I tried to use Windows Spotlight as my lock screen default, but it seems that something is corrupted in my user profile.
What I have done and discovered:

- I tried everything suggested on this forum, like this howto (Reset and Re-register Windows Spotlight in Windows 10 Windows 10 Customization Tutorials ), but with no luck.

- when I select Spotlight the preview screen stays grey and there's always a spinning wheel.

- my "AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.Windows.ContentDeliveryManager_cw5n1h2txyewy\LocalState\StagedAsse ts" directory contains only 0 kB files and the real images are not created into "AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.Windows.ContentDeliveryManager_cw5n1h2txyewy\LocalState\Assets "

- Spotlight works if I create a new user, but not with the current one, these are the regedit keys, please note that everything remains blank when I select Spotlight.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance

Answer:Windows Spotlight broken, not downloading images

When it's broken, it can be really hard to get it working again, if at all.

You can have a look at this and see if there are any clues:
Spotlight not working - reg entries point to non-existent image files.

C:\Users\David\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.Windows.ContentDeliveryManager_cw5n1h2txyewy\LocalSt ate\Assets

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Lock Screen\Creative

%AppData%\..\Local\Packages\Microsoft.Windows.ContentDeliveryManager_cw5n1h2txyewy\Localstate\Assets \

Upon checking the "C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.Windows.ContentDeliveryManager_<somerandomchar acters>\LocalState\Assets" folder for the images, I could see that the content was being downloaded correctly. When I deleted the files new ones would appear. If I changed one of the larger files to have a .jpg extension I could open the image and it was fine, but no amount of changing available settings would make Spotlight work correctly.

I resorted to checking the registry myself for something obvious and found the "hkey_current_user\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\lock screen" location. With the Windows Spotlight feature enabled I noticed that under the "Creative" sub-key the locations for the Windows Spotlight images are set. For me the "LandscapeAssetPath" and the "PortraitAssetPath" were set to an image file name that didn't exist and if I turned Spotlight off and on again it wou... Read more

With the registry being corrupt, you're really limited on options. The only solutions I have ever seen were to:

1. Hit F8 and try "last known good config"
2. Launch Startup Repair, open a command prompt window and run "chkdsk /r"
3. Re-install Windows.

Just after the Anniversary Update (AU), there were a lot of reports that the spotlight images weren't appearing and there was just a single colour blank lock screen
I have my pc on 14393.105 and the issue still persists. I can display local images or a slideshow from local photos but the spotlight images won't show at all
The strange part is that where the spotlight image is, I can still see the option that say do you like what you see
So if your spotlight images started appearing again, how did that happen? Can you share any suggestions on what I can do?

I often let my PC computer running Windows 10 'go to sleep' in hopes a new "Windows Spotlight" image will be offered. I've seen several queries on the internet about the location or description of the images. I have also found replies that individuals have posted, ad they're able to recognize the locale or image. Does MS plan to put information (or hints, like I've seen on Bing) so that we all can be more informed, as well as entertained? I often am sad that I cannot easily find out more about these images, some of which as stunning.

Answer:Does MS plan to put an ID icon/button on Windows Spotlight images?

With the anniversary update, the spotlight feature works on Login screen as well (yay!!)

But... anecdotal evidence indicates that currently the Windows Spotlight will ONLY change pictures at a later time after you have invoked the lock screen at least once.

But the problem is, not everyone has a habit of going to the lock screen daily (like me with my home machine that basically doesn't need to be locked, unlike in an office environment). As it is now, if I want to see a new spotlight picture for my power-up login screen, the only way that works for me is to go to the LOCK screen on purpose after I have signed in, then go back to desktop immediately. Then on the next day, I will most likely see a new picture for my login screen.

.... Why do I have to lock my screen JUST for the sake of seeing a new spotlight picture on my login screen?? Or have I missed anything here?

I've spent several hours trying to get this to work. I have 2 different accounts on my desktop. One account the same spotlight image is displayed on the sign-on screen and lock screen as expected. On the other account, I have everything set the same, but the sign-on screen just shows a picture instead of the spotlight lock screen image.

I've tried turning it off, checked that Animate windows when minimizing and maximizing was selected. Everything looks the same as the other account.

I wrote a batch file that will get me the Windows Spotlight images. The code is as follows:
@ECHO OFF
ECHO Creating Spotlight directory...
mkdir %userprofile%\Pictures\Spotlight
ECHO Directiry Created.
ECHO Opening current user Spotlight download location...
cd %appdata%
cd ..
cd Local\Packages\Microsoft.Windows.ContentDeliveryManager*
cd LocalState\Assets
ECHO Reached Spotlight Assets directory.
ECHO Begin Copying...
xcopy * %userprofile%\Pictures\Spotlight
ECHO Copy completed.
ECHO Adding extensions...
cd %userprofile%\Pictures\Spotlight
rename * *.jpg
ECHO Extensions added.
Start %userprofile%\Pictures\Spotlight
You can get the batch file at https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=E5569BBAB912B6A5!294517&authkey=!AEkInJ9pJaNuqA8&ithint=file%2cbat
However, the only problem is that some store app thumbnails are coming in with them as well. Is there any way I can get rid of the smaller files, and invalid image files using the batch script? I am really new to batch, however, I do have experience in bash scripts.

As the title says, I noticed that the wallpaper from the Windows spotlight wasn't changing anymore. Looking online, an sfc scannow was suggested. "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix someof them." I tried DISM restorehealth as well which gave me the "The source files could not be found". I've attached the CBS.log as I'm not good at figuring out what the text means if there is a problem.

All those nice scenic Windows Spotlight images used to always appear when I turned on my computer and logged on.
I have noticed over the last couple days that now one of the stock Windows login screen appears instead.

My setting is set to use Spotlight images. When I lock my computer, the spotlight images appear, but not when I am logging in.
Any idea what is going on?

Answer:Windows Spotlight images suddenly stopped appearing on login screen

Hi, this is a commonly reported matter which I've experienced. I posted these points in another recent thread, and added them to a couple of older ones, hoping people might find them.

1. In Settings, Lock Screen, obviously you have to select Spotlight, not Picture or Slideshow.
2. A symptom is that you don't see 'Like what you see' on any lock screen.
3. The final trigger that seemed to get it running again for me was to 'Choose an app to show detailed status' - which of course is totally non-intuitive.
4. Probably what stopped it working was when I tried disabling the lock screen.

Hope that gives some clues.

I only ever get one of the default pictures -- either the river or the sand. This is even after a complete reinstall. I also wiped out as much personalization data as possible from Bing and the Microsoft Account management page.

They used to work fine, but I don't think they've appeared since 10074. I read that the directory for the lock screen images was changing, but deleting them doesn't fix the problem.

The images do download and appear. I can find them under Microsoft.ContentDeliveryManager, but they don't ever show up on the lock screen.

I also have trouble signing in to some apps, like Xbox. I'm worried it's a bigger problem with my account in general. They used to show up if I used a local account instead, but now that doesn't work either.

Anybody else had this problem? I can deal if it's a bug, I just want to know it's more than just me.

Sunday, everything was perfectly fine. Monday, I didn't use my computer. Yesterday, I went to start it up and once the log in screen came on all of my devices (mouse, keyboard, USB mic) would not work. I've googled this problem for hours, tried everything I can understand, nothing is working.

I can access BIOS and my keyboard and mouse work perfectly fine. They do not work in safe mode. I'm really not sure what the problem is, and I really need help. I can't try to download any drivers or anything because neither my keyboard or my mouse will work.

I've tried to do system restore, but every time I get "An unspecified error occurred during System Restore. (0x80070002)"

PLEASE help. my computer, a windows netbook, i think caught a virus. The internet started spazzing out and when I restarted it, it would give me an option of booting the computer with regular settings or start up repair. Everytime i choose regular settings, it takes a good ten minutes and then says the computer could not be booted.
So when I try start up repair, it just goes to a blue screen (like some type of blue wallpaper) and nothing happens. I've waited an HOUR to see if anything happens and it doesnt.

I am new to posting here but just recently ran across a problem with windows 7 and thought I would give it a shot.

I ran a virus scan on my computer and noticed that I had a Trojan of some kind. I did the recommended command which was to remove the file. Everything was working fine until i noticed that my firewall was no longer active. Turns out that the Base Filtering Engine got deleted. I was reading online about how to get it back and the common idea was to do a system restore. So I tried to use a restore from a week ago, before I got the virus. I left my computer running for a good 5 hours and it still wasnt done. I read on other posts that restores shouldnt take longer then 45 mins and that I should restart my computer. So I did. The computer fired up to a black screen that said "loading windows files" and then made its way to the Startup Repair window. It ran for a few mins and then said that it could not be repaired and gave me the following message:

Maybe the machine has a hidden factory recovery partition. What is the make and model?

Also, recovery partitions can become corrupt. If one had on hand the Windows 7 64 bit install media, the recovery attempt may be more successful (at least as far as correcting system file corruption, access to repair tools and required source files are concerned).

My laptop was recently updated and restarted itself as it normally does however upon restart the startup repair window opened and reported that startup repair could not fix this computer automatically. I tried numerous times to use system restore using all possible restore points with no luck. My only option I believe would be to use command prompt however I'm not sure what commands to use to get to safe mode or any other mode that would help me repair my computer. If anyone has had this problem and fixed it or any ideas at all they would be greatly appreciated, thanks

After Startup Repair it should take you to the RE (Recovery Environment) and here choose Command Prompt then type chkdsk C: /R and press enter. Check Disk will try and fix any errors.

Computer was working fine. All of a sudden started freezing up.
Shut it down. It wouldn't shut down after hours. Hard shut down and now
It won't start back up. Windows Startup Recovery runs and it goes to just
My background screen but nothing comes up. If you select to start
Windows normally it goes right back to the black screen and does the
Windows startup recovery again.

Please Help!!!
I have searched Google, Windows Knowledge Base and Kelly's Corner Web Site to no avail.

When the PC is turned on and off the default Start Windows
and Exit Windows sound is not played through the speakers
which are turned on. All other Windows sounds are played
correctly.
I have checked the sound properties in Control
Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices /Properties and the Windows
Default Sound Scheme is selected. The corresponding .wav
files are in place i.e. Windows XP Shutdown.wav and
Windows XP Startup.wav.

Please advise how I can rectify this fault.
Thanks

Answer:Windows Xp Startup And Shutdown Sounds Are Not Working!

Find the sound files on the hard drive and remove them and then copy new ones in their place. The sound files are more than likely corrupt.

9/10 times that I have started this Y700 I just got in March, the Nvidia card has not started. It's fixed by simply restarting, but still, this is annoying and I hope not an intentional design.

I am working on a computer that had some spyware on it. I believe I was able to run tdsskiller before it stopped booting.

What happens now when you turn on the computer is that I get a choice to launch startup repair or to Start Windows Normally.

Neither one works. The message I get why I try starting windows normally is:
Windows failed to start
Status: 0xc000000e
Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible.

So, I boot off of my Windows 7 DVD and select repair. The first thing I noticed is that it doesn't show my Windows installation in the list. So, I selected command prompt and followed some instructions on using bootrec.exe.
/fixmbr completes fine
However, /fixboot says "the volume does not contain a recognized file system please make sure system drivers are loaded...
/scanos completes properly and shows my windows instalation at d:\Windows
/rebuildbcd identifies my os at d:\Windows and when I tell it to add it to the boot list it get this error:
The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable

So, going by those error messages, it almost sounds like the hard drive is dying but it just seems weird this all happened after it had that spyware on it.

It's weird is cant detect my OS in the first part of the repair process and wants me to install drivers but it obviously CAN see the hard drive as it detects my OS using bootrec AND I can browse the drive's contests in the command prompt.

Any ideas?

Answer:Windows 7 Will Not Boot - Startup Repair Not Working Either

Try the following command from the recovery console:

Code:
bcdedit /v
Alternately,

Code:
bcdedit /v > H:\temp.txt
will write the output to a file to H (replace H with the drive letter of the HDD or an external USB drive you might have).

When i start the computer i see that the USB devices are receiving power. As soon as the windows logo / loading screen pops up the USB devices die. I get to the user login screen but i cannot do anything because my computer only has usb ports for my mouse/keyboard.

I do not want to reformat my hard drive due to having many family pictures stored on the computer.

What went wrong?

How can i fix it?

Thanks

Answer:USB devices stop working on Windows startup

This could have been caused by a malware infection, driver update or a resent errant Windows Update. Try using a PS2 keyboard and mouse to troubleshoot the possible causes

My fingerprint reader doesn't seem to work on Windows login anymore (no light on the reader and it doesn't accept any fingerprint) in the past couple of days so have to login using a password. The fingerprint reader works fine in the BIOS and also when I go into the ThinkVantage Fingerprint Reader application i.e. it asks me for a fingerprint. Has this happend to anyone else and has this been caused by a specific MS patch in the last monthly patch cycle? I have reinstalled both the ThinkVantage Fingerprint Software 64bit (v 8102) and the TouchChip Fingerprint Coprocessor driver (v 1.6.1.341). I'm running a W530 and fully patched Windows 8.1 Pro

When will HP or Microsoft create a fix for this error? There are 236,000 posts about this on Microsoft Community. Yet no fix. "Windows 10 Critical Error Startup not working" I worked with the HP IT, the only workaround is creating a new account profile with administrative rights. Setting up that account then  copying your files to that account. It takes too much time for a temporary  fix. This has happened to me 3 times since I bought my computer 2 months ago and no one has a permanent fix! I can not keep creating new profile accounts, it take too long to copy files and set the account up. There are computers where this does not happen, I'm doing research and return my HP back to Best Buy, it is unusable.

Over the last few days I built a new PC with ASUS A87 Pro MB, no PCIe cards, and Samsung ssd 840 Pro boot drive. Lots of changes on a daily basis. For a while, the FAST STARTUP hybrid boot was working. Then it stopped, and I'm trying to debug it.

When PAST STARTUP is enabled in power options, I get a repeatable Critical Error - Windows did not shut down properly, and the startup time is as long as it would be without FAST STARTUP enabled. There are no BSODS, and no apparent harm from the Critical Shutdown error.

Has anyone seen this kind of thing before?

Answer:Windows 8.1 Fast Startup stopped working

try this,

open command prompt as administrator

then type:

powercfg -h on

then reboot

then try to see if the error is still there
