Laptop will not boot with stock hdd in caddy

Question: Laptop will not boot with stock hdd in caddy

Hello guys, I have a Lenovo V310 15 ISK. I replaced the stock 1 TB WD HDD with an SSD. I inserted the stock HDD in a caddy /rack but now the laptop will not boot up, it just freezes at the lenovo logo. I also can?t access the bios menu with this stock HDD in the caddy. I tried putting a 500 GB HDD in the caddy and the laptop works fine with it. The stock HDD is recognized from the laptop being inserte in a HDD case connected via USB.This is the weirdest issue I?ve ever encountered.Any clues? Thanks guys

Preferred Solution: Laptop will not boot with stock hdd in caddy

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

How to obtain the four screws that secure the caddy to the laptop body?
(Not the screws that keep the HDD inside the caddy.)
Does anyone know the specification for these screws, and where I can buy them?
Thanks in advance.

Hello. I'm experiencing a problem I've yet to experience on any other device till now.

I bought a Samsung notebook recently and it's a wonderful machine. The only problem is that it refuses to boot from anything other than the pre-loaded Windows 8. I've burned another operating system to a disk on the same computer. It was not detected in the boot menu. However I tried the same thing with a flash drive and it was displayed in the boot menu although it refused to load and instead proceeded to boot Windows 8.

I was thinking of going as far as shrinking the primary partition and creating a new one to see if anything changes, or even uninstalling the pre-loaded Windows 8 to see if it will let me do anything. If anyone has experienced this problem before please tell me what you did. . .
Also I didn't know if this was the right sub-forum to post this topic in.

A friend bought a 3400+, which is running at 2.4GHz, with the bios being reset to defaults. The CPU is ment to run at 2.2GHz, stock. The FSB is 200, which is also what they say it is in reviews, so thats correct.

11x200 = 2.2GHz
But the multi is at 12x, so its
12x200 = 2.4GHz

This info is all coursity of WCPUID, so I believe its gotta be accurate. Any ideas as to why this isnt running at 2.2GHz?

So its essentially a 3700+ minus the 512kb of L2 cache.

Thanks in advance for any ideas/clues/comments.

Answer:A64 3400+ Not running at Stock Speeds /w Stock Settings

The 3400+ is meant to run at 2.4GHz & has 512KB of L2 cache. The 3400+ which ran at 2.2GHz had 1024KB of L2 cache & is of the older core. Everything is fine.

I received my ideapad Y480 209386U with the 1tb+32GB SSD option. Out of the box, performance is great! But, why is windows not installed on the SSD? Only a few Lenovo programs are installed on the SSD, and it doesnt look like anything else is being moved to the SSD. I would think that the SSD would be the windows drive and the 1TB be the data drive. Also, I do not see any software installed hinting anything about the Lenovo Rapid Boot 3.0 and the like...is that supposed to be built into the BIOS or something? Any help or explanations on these few questions would be greatly appreciated. This is one powerful machine!

I have several computers all of them have two caddies fitted. The operating system is normally fitted in one the C: drive and the Data Store is in the D: drive. So far I have used Western Digital drives.
The computer I am having the problem with is an Asus Sabertooth 990FX board with the latest BIOS 1604.
I have decided to fit SSD's to all my computers. This Sabertooth machine allowed the HDD C: drive to be migrated to the SSD. This was done with the HDD C:drive in a Caddy and the SSD in the second caddy in place of the D: drive The migration was successful.
I then remove the HDD C: drive and fitted the newly migrated SSD C: drive to the same caddy which had housed the HDD. I powered up and found the SSD was not recognized. The message to insert a boot disc etc was displayed.
I tried the SSD in another machine with an Asus board this time an M5A 78L-M. The computer booted up OK.
I returned to the Asus Sabertooth machine and tried the SSD connected directly to the SATA ports on the Motherboard.and it booted.

The problem as I see it is the SSD will boot with a direct connection but will not boot when a Caddy is in the circuit.

Has anyone had a similar problem and any suggestions on a Fix.

Answer:SSD will not boot when fitted in a Caddy

Is the caddy a SATA or PATA? If SATA is the BIOS set to boot the port is plugged into on the motherboard first?

I'm installing a SSD in a Dell laptop using a caddy to mount the SSD in the DVD's location. I am not able to remove the stock HDD or disconnect the HHD's SATA cable.

Using easyBCD, will I be able to move the "System" files in the Recovery partition to the C partition on the HDD? In the Disk Management snip above, Disk 0 is the HDD and Disk 1 is the SSD>

After this, should the C partition be the only active partition then? Shouldn't easyBCD mark it active or do I change it using an elevated command prompt?

When I migrate the C partition to the SSD using Paragon's Migrate OS to SSD, do I then mark the HDD inactive or do I do this before migrating? I'm confused?

The HDD is a fresh install back to the laptop's original state. The 102 MB partition's information has been deleted and not recovered. It was a Fat 16 partition originally. The recovery partition has not been tampered with, I believe.

I've been trying to do this for a while using different cloning/migration tools, but I keep having boot problems mainly caused by the fact the I can't remove or disconnect the stock HDD. Can you help me get around this problem?

EDIT: There is also a problem in BIOS with the SSD showing up too. In the main BIOS screen, both the HHD and SSD are shown. But in the boot order screen in BIOS, the SSD isn't listed. The HHD and all the other selections are shown. The SSD is mounted where the DVD usually goes using a caddy.

Answer:How do I install SSD w/o disconnecting stock HDD and get it to boot?

It seems that HDD or SDD installed in DVD caddy is not bootable. I've seen this on other laptops & your BIOS seems to confirm same on your laptop.

SSD must be installed where HDD now resides.

I ordered and payed for a stock laptop (Envy 17t) ten days ago. When I check my order ststus it say's it's still processing. Even if it was a custom build it would not take ten day's to do so. I've built many. I'm kind of wishing I checked the forum before paying for it since it seams this is a common issue. I guessing I have no choice to wait since it's paid for but it is a bit ridiculous.

I've initially tried this but get BSOD just as the Win 7 logo anim starts. Is this as easy as it sounds or am I missing something? Thanks.

Answer:Boot fail from internal caddy

This may provide you with an answer.

When you take a hdd with a Windows operating system installed from the computer it was originally installed on and install it in another computer you are asking for major problems. The excerpt below is from a Intel article which describes in detail what happens. The article also mentions a reference to an article by Microsoft, it can be seen here.

Moving a hard drive with Windows already installed to a new motherboard without reinstalling the operating system is not recommended.

If a hard drive is moved to a new computer, the registry entries and drivers for the mass storage controller hardware on the new motherboard are not installed in Windows for the new computer you may not be able to start Windows. This is true even if you move the hard drive to a motherboard with the same chipset, as different hardware revisions can cause this issue as well.

Additionally, moving a hard drive to a new motherboard may not exhibit any errors until you install new IDE drivers. This is because each chipset uses a different Plug-n-Play (PNP) ID to identify it. If you change your motherboard, your registry will have multiple PNP IDs (for the old hardware as well as the new hardware). If there are multiple entries in the registry, Windows cannot determine which hardware to initialize and therefore fails with a STOP error.

Hi people.

I´m triying to boot from a 2nd HDD caddy that i recently purchase, my intention is to have 2 OS separately, in the 1st HDD i have W10 and in the 2nd i want to have a Linux distribution, the problem is that i cant boot the Linux instalation that i have in the HDD attached in the caddy.

I´m searching in the BIOS configuration and i was unable to find an option that allows me to do that, BIOS version is A12.
Any help will be apreciated.

Answer:Boot from 2nd HDD caddy on inspiron n4110

It depends on the caddy you used (all of which are third party and not supported by Dell -- and most of which can be used for storage drives but not bootable ones).  Check with the caddy manufacturer.

Hi All,I have removed an 80gig hard drive from a broken 4yr old Evesham laptop(broken hinges)not cost effective to repair, and hope to use it in a caddy. I have been looking at ordering one but not sure what type to order, IDE or SATA. How do I know what type the HDD is? and can anyone recommend a caddy/enclosure. I would also like to remove the CD/DVD writer and place in a caddy if that is possible. If it can be placed in a caddy how do I go about removing from the laptop as I cannot see how it is held in place.

Hi,
I recently installed a SSD in my laptop (Dell XPS l501x) and bought a HDD caddy to replace my DVD drive for extra storage. It worked perfectly till all of a sudden I started to get the BSOD a couple of times and the strange thing was that every second time I started my laptop it got stuck right after BIOS (completely black with the backlight on and fans rotating).

Today however in the middle of watching a movie my laptop went off suddenly (like when you pull out the batery). After restarting the on botten lighted up but nothing was hapening, not even backlight. So I was really worried.

Then I just got the Caddy out, and now I'm here typing this message on my good old laptop again :D

My question is how this can be and how can I install the caddy in the right way?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Hi there! This is the first time I'm posting here, I'm an IT guy myself and most of the time I fix whatever I need with a lot of searching and research, but I'm just out of ideas, it's been 2 days since I'm trying everything.I have an Acer E5-572G, came with a 1tb HDD and I just bought a 240 kingston uv400 SSD. I put the SSD in the main HDD slot (to use the full sata 3 6gbps bandwidth) and I bought an ODD caddy, to replace my dvd-rw with the old HDD.I mounted everything, booted from an external usb, installed windows 10 x64 (HDD wasn't showing in bios, nor in the windows partition choser installer). The SSD runs perfectly, but I can't get the hdd to work. When I start the laptop, the HDD 'tries' to power on, you can hear it spin for like 2 seconds, then dies. The led is always on, so the caddy works, it's just something on the laptop/software part. Here's what I've tried so far:- updated BIOS, from 1.01 to 1.09 (latest version on the acer website)- checked in disk management to see if it's recognized, but not letter-assigned (it doesn't show up there, never did while in the caddy, only the ssd)- used my HDD in an external usb rack, it works and i can see both my partitions so the HDD is working- tried 2 more caddies (i have a friend who sells them), nothing, the light goes on but the hdd doesn't, so most likely the caddy works too- tried another HDD in the caddy, that one didn't work either- i tried using the caddy in 2 different laptops (both running windows 10, so if it is ... Hi everyone,

I realize you can buy cooling pads and install additional fans in some cases, but is there a laptop manufacture that makes laptop with cool as a primary focus not for gaming, but for general performance and longevity (lifespan)?

In a world that is yearning for paper thin, wafery laptops that perform suboptimally and have shorter life spans by virtue of higher temperatures, I'd like to find one that has plenty of extra breathing room, even if it takes up extra space. One with couple cushions of airs with some gnarly built in fans?

Answer:Laptop with best stock cooling system?

Asus makes great laptops, and haven't heard too much of them overheating, or being too hot. A laptop's temperature is more effected by the amount of ventilation more than the amount of fans.

Hello, I just bought a SSD drive (Kingston 128 GB) and also purchased a caddy for it. My goal was to add the SSD as a secondary storage (replacing the CD drive with the caddy) and install an aditional OS (windows 7, 8 or 10) on it, so that I could be able to boot from both my regular HDD and from the SSD in the caddy. So far so good, but it turned out that the secondary drive (the caddy one) does not appear in the boot list of BIOS... It appears in windows, when I load it from my primary HDD and it works perfectly fine. It also appeared after booting from the USB to install the new OS on it and I was able to do so without any problems, BUT when I start the PC and press F12 to get into the boot list it just does not appear there. I tried almost every possible option in BIOS boot setup, but it just doesn't work.  If i replace my HDD with the SSD and put the SSD into the primary slot and the HDD into the caddy, then the SSD appears in the boot list but the HDD doesn't. I thought that maybe the SATA connection is the problem, but when i put back the CD drive it immediately appeared in the boot list.  Please help me resolve this problem. I have found similar threats on other forums, but no resolution so far.  My machine is Lenovo L430 and I have the latest BIOS update: version 2.65 from Oct 2015.

Answer:Can's find caddy SSD in BIOS boot list

Caddy bay need to be turned Online all the time. It was an issue in the Thinkpad T520 as well. There may be a settting in the Power Manager if not BIOS for this. You do not want it to spin down or go to sleep etc ever. You may get it going otherwise you'll have to contact tech support for a solution.Having said that if you want is as a high speed boot drive then you should Clone the HD to the SSD if its big enough to contain all the partitions and data. I have a Packard bell PC running Microsoft Windows Vista home premium.
Installed is a drive bay for a removable disk caddy. Once and once only I put an NTFS drive into this caddy and booted the system and it worked - I was able to copy data from the drive.
Now every time I boot the machine with the drive in the caddy I see the "timeline" display (the 10cm row of colours) which I always see on startup but the screen goes blank and nothing happens.
Boot the PC without the drive and it starts up OK I get the same "timeline" followed by a blank screen, then approx five seconds later I see Vista starting.
I have checked the boot sequence etc in Bios and all seems OK .
The only thing I can find is inside Vista there is a mention of IRQ problems in the event log? ACPI device does not recognise device in PCI slot????
But as the Caddy is connected as a Seconday IDE device (behind the DVD drive) the IRQ about PCI slots might be a red herring?
Why should Vista freeze in the blank screen?
Also the primary Boot drive is SATA and the removable is secondary IDE (if that makes any Difference)

Hi,

I have an old laptop that I've decided to refresh (Acer Aspire 6935G) with a lovely SSD.

I used Macrium Reflect to clone the hard drive whilst the ssd was in the caddy, once cloned I swapped and put the ssd inside the laptop and the old hard drive in the usb caddy.

The laptop fails to boot unless the old hdd is plugged in via usb and set to the primary boot device.

I am pulling my hair out at this issue and have spent over a week trying to resolve it.

If I unplug the hard drive from caddy, and try booting, it presents error: 0xc000000e

If I unplug the hard drive from caddy once booted, the laptop works fine.

It appears that I only need the old hard drive for the BCD, but I cannot find how to get the BCD on the SSD and not the old hard drive.

Someone help, please?

Thanks

Hi all. I just bought a B50-70 laptop and I thought I upgrade it with a SSD. I bought a caddy and a 120GB Kingston Hyper X Fury and I installed it in the DVD-ROM slot after removing the DVD drive. The problem is that Windows 8.1 does not properly detect this drive. Under Disk Management in Administrative Tools, the drive shows up with a down red arrow and when I try to create a MBR on it, an error message pops up with an I/O error. I have the latest BIOS firmware from Lenovo. A Windows 8.1 installation disk does not recognize this drive as a valid on to install the OS on. The SSD works fine in another PC and it is properly detected by the B50-70 BIOS. My question is: does the B50-70 actually support a SSD via a caddy instead of the DVD-ROM? What can I do for this drive to work? Please help!

Try swapping the drives.Connect the SSD to the mainboard's SATA port to check if this helps with proper setting up. Then, try the hard drive in the caddy and see if there are any problems. If you encounter any, buy an external drive rack and use the HDD with it.

Hi everyone,
I'm trying to help my brother remotely. He has a stock Lenovo T440s. It's about 14 months old. He was having all sorts of random issues so about 6 weeks ago, he requested I do a fresh rebuild, hoping it would solve the problem.
It hasn't.

Can you advise me the best way to proceed?
What tests to run or things to investigate. This is a business - use laptop- no gaming or things that (should) stress it.

It's running Win 7 pro, outlook 2013, Firefox 35, 8 GB RAM, i7, onboard graphics.
Let me know what else to provide and I will.

I was thinking a memtest would be useful- which is the best test - note he has to run it, so it should be easy

I would like some program to be running in hte background, to record errors as they occur. I don't think that they are reproduceably on demand.

thank you. I don't know where else to turn, so I appreciate your help and handholding.

I cannot seem to find an answer to this anywhere.

I plan on buying the Windows 7 64-bit upgrade for my laptop. It currently has Vista Home Premium 32-bit SP1 installed.

If I remove the hard drive and try to use it on another motherboard, it will not work because it's an OEM OS. However, if I do the upgrade will it still act as though it's OEM? Or will I be able to remove the hard drive and use it on another motherboard?

I will be doing a Custom Install ("clean install") so the hard drive will be completely wiped before Windows 7 is installed.

Answer:Will using Win7 Upgrade override stock laptop OEM?

The reason I ask is that as a student I qualify for the Win7 Pro upgrade for $30. I am building a new computer and want to take my legitimate Windows license from this laptop to it.

I could just go buy OEM Windows 7 but that's at least $50 more.

Hi.

I recently installed a fresh Windows 10 Home on my laptop. I was having some problems and so I made a post on this forum. That post can be seen following this link: Factory reset laptop that has had an upgrade to SSD by cloning old HD
That has been solved in a weird way. Basically I had to remove my secondary HD which I had in a caddy connecting where my CD drive used to be.

Now I am having a problem with the secondary hard drive. If I leave it out then I can boot the computer and everything works fine. When I insert the caddy (by shutting down the computer first, of course) and then boot the computer, it gets stuck on a loading screen with the small Windows logo and swirling loading dots on a black background. It stays like that until the computer eventually decides to sleep. Something like 30 minutes.

In the bios both of the hard drives are registered and I can see them in the boot options.

I have also tried to connect the hard drive which is in the caddy to the computer using an external enclosure and then it shows one of the partition as being something like 30GB (should be around 300GB) and the other partition shows up but is unreachable.

I am clueless as to why this is happening.

Hi all,
I have a Tecra W50 PT640A-04103NN1.
When a second hard-drive is installed in the DVD drive bay the laptop will try to boot of the bay disk, not the internal disk
This seond disk has no operating system installed and so the boot fails.

If I hit F12 at boot time and select HDD, then the machine boots correctly. I.e. boots from the main hard drive.
Changing the boot order in the BIOS does make any difference; it will always try to boot from the second, drive bay disk first.

Has any been able to get this to work properly?

Thanks in advance!

Answer:Tecra W50 - can't boot when second hard drive (caddy) installed.

Hi Doppelfrog,
I've got same problem with my W50, got my HDD caddy couple of days ago.
Did you have any luck in fixing this issue?
I believe the Bios for this laptop is not developed to serve two drives (as the computer got only one drive bay) and it's not possible to prioritize witch HDD should boot first...

Regards,
Marcin

Hi there,
Hoping you can help! My laptop (ASUS nj61) died. I bought the nexstar 3 superspeed USB 3.0 caddy. Was able to remove laptop hard drive and insert into caddy.
My new laptop reads this as RECOVERY (D. If I double click on this, I get an HP recovery partition warning. I can't seem to access anything from there.
I was hoping to recover photos; music and other files from my old hard drive.
Can you offer any advice (for a computer dummy ) ?
Thanks for your help....

Answer:Recovery of laptop hard drive using caddy

most harddrives would have two partitions a D and a C - D is the recovery partition as you have seen and C would be - should be the Main harddrive

with the harddrive connected to the USB port
go into
Start>control panel> administrative tools>computer manager>disk manager
now you should see the USB disk listed there

I have just installed a SSD and moved my original HDD to a optical bay caddy. It all worked fine until I fitted the 2nd HDD optical bay caddy. After I did this it now boots from the 2nd HDD optical bay caddy rather than the SSD in the main drive slot. It has also moved the SSD to drive letter E, with the HDD as C. I would just change them back but I'm not sure whether you can just do that when an OS is installed and running on them. My type of BIOS does also not display any of the drives, just displaying 'OS boot manager', 'CD Rom (Internal)', 'USB Key', 'CD Rom (USB)'. I have a HP Pavilion G6 laptop and I'm running Window 8. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Answer:Solved: Laptop Booting From 2nd HDD Optical Caddy

I have since disconnected the 2nd HDD Caddy and Windows is booting from the SSD fine with it labeled as the C drive. I fear though if I reconnect it it will push the SSD to the E drive again (the D drive is the recovery partition of the HDD). I tried connecting the caddy when the laptop was switched on but I couldn't get it to display in disk management after a rescan and refresh. As there is no data on the HDD that I actually want (as it is a new laptop) I would happily delete the whole HDD (C drive), the only data on the drive I would wish to keep is the recovery partition (D drive).

Is this for real?  After almost a month I received this email from Lenovo/IBM Hello,
This is in regards to your case reference {{######}} .
We would like to apologise for the delay, 1 of the parts that is needed for the repair is in transit.
As soon as the part will be received, they will repair the machine, test it and return the machine to you if everything works OK.
Have a great day! I have an X1 bought 6 months ago with 'warrant' for damages. Considering the losses that I have for not having a laptop to work; it could have been cheaper to just buy another. Please provide me with my laptop until the necessary parts arrive, and collect it for fixing.Seriously, one month for sourcing the parts? This is total lapse of customer care. A really annoyed client

Hi there,

My old Win 8.1 laptop is kaput, but thankfully the harddrive shows up fine in a caddy plugged into the new Win 10 laptop. My problem: I can't find my files. There was a folder on the old laptop's desktop that had most of my junk in, but where that is now on the old harddrive is a mystery.

There's not much showing up in the old harddrive's admin/users folders.

Thanks in advance,
Darren.

I have a 120GB 2.5" SATA drive spare that I want to use on my desktop PC. I have one of those USB caddy devices - the USB cable is two-headed at one end with one plug on the other. If I use it on my laptop, I plug the two USB cables into the side and connect the HDD into the caddy and it works perfectly - Windows (8.1) shows the drive immediately. However, when trying it on my desktop (and I have drive many different USB ports) the LED on the caddy comes on, but when connecting the drive (or connecting the USB cable to the caddy with the drive already in place), nothing happens - sometimes you can hear the drive attempting to start, sometimes you can hear nothing. But nothing registers on the PC either - there is no USB connection sound for example. The drive is in good condition and hasn't ever been used that much. And it shows on the laptop as working perfectly. So why can't my desktop PC (also Windows 8.1 and clearly has more power available to give out) start the drive? Thanks for any ideasmessage edited by Alex2002

Answer:SATA drive caddy works on laptop - but not on desktop?

Maybe the two close USB's are using a common power source. If you have a USB extension lead it would be worth seeing what happens if you use two USB's that are further apart.Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Hi,

I have a Laptop running Win98 1st. Ed. It's on it's 2nd hard drive. The first was a IBM Travelstar (model# DKLA-24320). It was replaced when the Stone Monkey Virus made it impossible to access the dirve.

Now I am looking for what I think is called an external hard drive caddy or enclosure. I would like to place the old hard drive in the external caddy or enclosure. The caddy or enclosure would have to be either Parallel, USB or PCMICA adaptable. I am hoping to then be able to access the old hard drive that way.

Is there such a Caddy or enclosure, does it go by any other name? If there is such a device please tell me the proper name and where I can find them.

I'd also like to know whether, this sounds like a possible way to access an old laptop hard drive?

Thanks

Answer:laptop Hard Drive External Caddy or Enclosure

You can pick up USB external disk cases for peanuts for 2.5" disks. I use them for traveling storage. Here's one typical example: http://www.imagestore.us/product.asp?pf_id=HY-2.5case&dept_id=04-005

Note that you may need a cheap +5V adapter to use this case, you can buy them in the $20 range with the supply included. www.pricewatch.com is your friend.

Hello everyone,
I am using HP p028TX as my primary laptop, Reviewed here-
[Honest Review] HP P028TX Laptop Review [Core i3 1.9Ghz, 4GB ram, 1TB HDD, Nvidia 830M 2GB, Beats] | NotebookReview

The laptop is Mostly used For Photo/Videos and Gaming. The laptop came with 1TB HDD and I am lately running out of space. Its very cumbersome to use External USB HDD for certain Data. I have ordered an optical Drive HDD caddy with a view to adding one more HDD and enjoy software RAID.

Here's what I plan to do-
1> Install One more 1TB HDD in Optical Caddy.
2> Convert Both Disks (Internal+Caddy) to Dynamic Disks.
3> Setup Striping RAID 0 array for the data part. I am not touching the Boot partition nor willing to install Windows on RAID.
4> Enjoy higher performance of software for Games/ Large videos etc.

Here are my doubts-
1> Will conversion to Dynamic disks mess up the windows 7 bootup? Is the process better from Inbuilt disk management or I need some professional tool?

2> Will the Windows Image Backup Still able to backup/Restore system C:\ partitions from Dynamic disks? (To external USB HDD)

3> Is the Configuration Reliable Long term? (I am aware of Risks regarding RAID 0, Many PCs at my office Run RAID 0). I am more curious regarding the reliablity of DYNAMIC DISK.

4> Is it very cumbersome to restore/Recover data from a Dynamic disk in case something messed up? I do keep backups of Data on USB HDD, But I rely on windows Image backup for ... Read more

I've gone through several of these caddys.

My laptop (a Lenovo G500) continually has the same problem; it refuses to recognize the HD I connect to it using an Optical Bay Caddy I purchased on eBay (I've tried several, it does this with all of them). The first time I connected it it saw the Hard Drive and worked perfectly. I rebooted and it hasn't shown up in the BIOS's Boot Screen or anywhere else since.

Here are some pictures of the caddy itself: https://imgur.com/a/qEXbq#0

System: Lenovo G500 CPU: Intel Core i3-3120M CPU @ 2.50GHz Dual-Core
Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 4000, 1366 x 768

What could be causing this?

Answer:Laptop refuses to recognize Optical Bay Hard Drive Caddy?

Have you tried setting Sata Controller Mode to Compatible? I assume it's just a name for the old IDE mode, which means that if it works,it will be slower.

Okay brand new HP Pavilion DV6t-7000, it has 7 home premium on it from the factory which i dont mind but i have a few copies of 7 pro, i am about to go into my junior year of college as a Information Systems Major, ive worked some on an IT helpdesk as well this is just a little background to say im not completly computer illiterate one reason id like to run pro is that many companies are currently running it and since im in the business school i just would like to be used to it! However id like to keep the premium version on the laptop to have for whatever i choose mainly to upgrade it to windows 8 (15 bucks when buying new laptop) when it comes out to play around with!

I have a 750gb hard drive which after HP messes with it its considerably less but on the partition that is my main it has somewhere around 640 id like to leave maybe 100gb or so on that copy just for when i get 8 so i have plenty of space if i decided to go to 8 full time at some point! but like ive read hp has 4 sections and thats the limit, how is my best way to go about this guys?

Thanks so much!

Answer:New HP laptop, want to add a copy of 7 pro while keeping stock copy?

When you are in the installation, just choose the upgrade option.

Upgrade Install with Windows 7

Apologize I read that wrong.

I do believe you can go into the disk management and create a new partition. Then format with NTFS. And install the windows 7 on there.

HP employees do not appear here in their capacity as such. The amazon link would be a reseller. In order to get the HP student discount you have to buy from HP. I doubt they are going to make any more of these by tomorrow. Have you tried chat support with the store? Once laptop models disappear from stock I think it would be rare for them to reappear.

Ok jus curious as to how far i can push my p4. Now, as it is its oc to 3.02 from 2.8. Because of this my ram is now at 433 from 400. Its mushkin and it has copper heat spreds. Also, my case has 8 fans right now plus the p4 stock fan. So, my question is how far could i push it without heat becoming a problem? It only raised (cpu temp) from 25 to 26/27 idle to the same during hard gaming at around 39-41. Anyone?

Answer:How much OC stock p4?

When I was overclocking my Northwood P4s with their stock heatsinks & fans, other components were always the limiting factor. PCI cards couldn't handle the speed, memory was too slow, IDE bus had read errors etc. Maybe I was just lucky with my CPUs, I don't know. Willamettes (old P4s with 256kB cache) were another story though, I could only get about 15% overclocking from stock speeds.

Heat hasn't been a problem to me either, sometimes CPU is about 60C at full load, I don't think that's too much.

Now I have a P3-S CPU, and the motherboard limits overclocking, because it has FSB speeds from 133 to 166 only (and PCI speed multiplier locked). The CPU could handle more.

Question: M58 HDD Caddy

Hi, I want to fit a second HDD to an M58p small form factor (or whatever these small ones are called!) in place of the optical drive. I assume that Lenovo do a bracket kit for this, but I can't seem to find any part numbers etc... Anyone out there shed any light on this? Many Thanks, Mike

Answer:M58 HDD Caddy

Fitting a HDD into an optical drive bay can be accomplished with an inexpensive 3.5"--> 5.25" conversion kit available anywhere (Like the one HERE). I think Lenovo has a bracket for that but it would be really expensive. The hole for the optical drive can only be covered up by a blank bezel, that's going to be the tough part to find, if it is an issue for you at all.

So what I am looking to do is to take the hd from that pc, put it in a hardrive caddy, and boot from that on a different computer. For certain reasons I need to retain both OS's.

My question is this. How will Microsoft deal with the licensing in this situation. I attempted this and got a notification that I will need to reactivate windows, but does this count as a second pc in their eyes? Or can I make the call and just say that the hardware has changed.

another note, Ideally I would like to move between both computers without re licensing, but I'm assuming this might not be possible.

Question: Old Mac CD Caddy

Hello I recently purchased a old Macintosh Colour Classic with a external CD Caddy (Apple CD 150) and a Macintosh IIvx to create simple MIDI songs as a hobby.I was wondering if anyone is able to tell me exactly what a CD Caddy is and if a CD tray is needed in order to use it etc.I have been searching on the net endlessly and have been unable to find anything about them.Thankies

Answer:Old Mac CD Caddy

1st generation CD drives had a removable plastic holder which you inserted the CD's into.  Then you placed the entire cassette into the drive.  Is that what you have?Is this the drive?  http://www2.sunrem.com/sun02.w?pt=661-1705&catcode=10100Here's the caddy:  http://www2.sunrem.com/sun02.w?pt=678-5059&catcode=10100

I checked the forum and it seems Lenovo still does not have a 12.7mm caddy for the W510 so I can add a second HD. Or is there any news? Also I see recommondations for the 'Chinese' caddies but it seems despite the fact that they are 12.7mm they might still be lose. Anyways, can somebody provide some experience with these. http://tinyurl.com/2dmlkwb - Link to the 'Chinese' caddies. Thanks

Hi everyone, I recently purchased the Z50-70 laptop and so far I love it! I feel it could be a little bit faster with a solid state drive, however.  I have a 250GB 840 Evo I can throw in (with a caddy for the 1TB HDD that's already installed), but from what I've researched I can't have a 1TB HDD in the CD drive slot, but I'd rather not put the SSD there, because it wouldn't perform at full speed and would completely defeat the purpose of that drive.  I guess what I'm asking for is the maximum capacity the CD drive slot will allow for a HDD caddy? Thanks!Gage Henry

Question: caddy?

I want a second caddy for switching out the drives on occasion.   I believe quickstart (splashtop) requires the drive to be internal, not USB. Does the S10 share the caddy with another lenovo product, so that I can find it on ebay or elsewhere?

Answer:caddy?

I would like one as well.

Hello,
I'm having problems with my WD blue 1TB HDD (which came originally with the laptop) being recognized using it in CD-ROM caddy.
I bought Dell Inspiron 17 5767 like a month ago, and of course I want to upgrade it with SSD (Samsung 850 EVO 256 GB), and then use original HDD instead of CD-ROM.
I already read the post: en.community.dell.com/.../19536697
I have Salcar caddy, which is proven good, already in previous 2 laptops, one HP and one Dell. Also the current one with this HDD was tested in older Dell and the disk is recognized and works superb. So from this I can conclude, the caddy and the disk are completely fine, something must be wrong on my new Dell side.
I upgraded BIOS (to 1.09), SATA and other drivers yesterday ... nothing changes.
The OS (on the SSD) is original as got from Dell, as the data was migrated with the Samsung utility from original HDD to SSD. Then HDD was formatted, currently has only one partition.
In BIOS I disabled Virtual machine and LAN boot settings, as they are not needed. Also, LPM is disabled, as suggested in other post. But still no change.
The HDD in caddy is not recognized in BIOS, nor Windows, nor Disk Management, nor CMD (diskpart).
I also tried to create smaller partition, about 850 GB, still not recognized. I didn't try with smaller than 750 GB, maybe should do this, but I don't believe this is a problem.
I bet there are other users out there with the same problems - did anyone got this worki... Read more

Question: Caddy

I need to transfer contents of an IDE hard-drive to a Sata machine. I have been told I need a caddy!. I confess I have no idea what this is.Would someone be kind enough to explain what I need and how to get it to work?.Many thanks

Answer:Caddy

This is a IDE caddy that you put your Hard Drive into. click hereThe Jumper on your Drive as to be set to Master for it to work, you then just plug it into a USB port for it to load. Do not just pull it out when you have done as this can damage the drive. In lower Task Bard near clock you will see a Icon with a Green arrow right click on this to safely remove. If you have problems shutting it down, power your PC down then remove the plug before restarting PC

Answer:Lenovo g580 laptop not able to boot(shows boot options and then restarts)

Hi shaswat,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m sorry to hear that the computer is not booting to Windows and getting stuck on a Black screen and also getting prompt to select the boot device each and every time at the startup.

Below are the steps to diagnose the issue and resolve it and also click here to view the BIOS simulation of G580 Laptop:

Turn ON the computer, before Lenovo LOGO is displayed on the screen. Keep tapping on ?F2? Key to enter BIOS menu.

Note: To check how the BIOS menu looks and to explore its options Click Here.

In the ?Information? Tab check if the HDD (Hard Disk Drive) is listed in the Tab or is it displaying ?No Device Detected?.
If the HDD is listed in ?Information? Tab, I suggest you to reset the BIOS to its defaults by clicking on ?F9? Key and select YES.
Then Click on ?F10? Key to safe the changes that are done in BIOS, restart the computer and check if the issue is resolved.

If the issue still persists even after performing BIOS reset, I would suggest you performing OSRI (Operating System Re-Install) should resolve the issue Click Here and refer page no.33 & 34 to check the steps to perform OSRI using One Key Recovery, if and only if the computer was pre-installed with Windows Operating System.

NOTE: Please backup the data in the computer before performing OSRI, as the data will be completely erased.

Hope this helps!!!

Do post back if the issue sti... Read more
